Dude! It's about time!
DUDE! SPEAKER JOE WANTS WANTS TO LEGALIZE IT! The big takeaway from new/old state House Speaker Joe Souki’s prepared remarks upon taking office on Jan. 16 was that the state needed to “enhance our revenue stream.” “We must put together a mix of strategies that will generate more state revenues–equitably,” he said. While he spent most of his speech talking about tax credits and personal tax rates, it’s now clear he had other, somewhat more radical, notions in mind. That’s right kids: Speaker Joe wants to legalize marijuana. In November 2012, voters in Washington and Colorado passed ballot measures doing exactly that. Could Hawaii be the third state to authorize legal cannabis use? It will if Souki has his way. On Jan. 17, one of Souki’s first acts in the new Legislature was to introduce HB 150, which would legalize marijuana in the state of Hawaii (and, at the very least, make a mockery of the DEA’s Operation Green Harvest). The bill “Authorizes persons 21 years of age or older to consume or possess limited amounts of marijuana for personal use,” says the state Legislature’s website. “[It] provides for the licensing of marijuana cultivation facilities, product manufacturing facilities, safety testing facilities, and retail stores. [It] requires the counties to provide for licensing of marijuana facilities if the State fails to do so. [It] authorizes the counties to regulate or prohibit marijuana facilities within their boundaries.” I think it goes without saying this bill will be at least slightly controversial (though as I write this, Representative Scott Saiki, D-McCully, has already attached his name to the bill). Citing a recent QMark Research Poll that showed 57 percent of Hawaii residents wanted marijuana legalized, the ACLU’s Hawaii office has officially endorsed the bill. “In Hawaii, as across the nation, arrests for marijuana possession are one of the
most common ways that individuals get caught up in the criminal justice system, at great social and economic cost,” said ACLU of Hawaii executive director Vanessa Chong in a Jan. 18 press release. Bill advocates like ACLU Hawaii and the Marijuana Policy Project believe legalization will both decriminalize activity that most people want legal and help the state raise badly needed revenue. “Regulating and taxing marijuana similarly to alcohol takes marijuana sales out of the hands of criminals and puts them behind the counter in legitimate businesses that will generate significant new revenue for Hawaii,” said Mason Tvert, director of communications at the Marijuana Policy Project, in a Jan. 18 ACLU Hawaii press release. “Law enforcement resources should be focused on preventing and responding to serious crimes rather than enforcing antiquated marijuana prohibition laws.”
MAUI PD FAILS TO ENFORCE STUPID ORDINANCE AT MLK DAY MARCH Word started to reach me on Sunday, Jan. 20 that there might be action at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day March in Wailuku. “Thanks for the heads-up,” stated
an anonymous email from Occupy Maui, referring to my Jan. 14 blog post stating that County of Maui law prohibited the carrying of signs on public roads. “Don’t miss the march tomorrow. We won’t.” The message sender wasn’t kidding. At 8:30am on Monday, Jan. 21, I walked over to the front of lawn of the Kalana O Maui Building, where a ceremony honoring King was taking place. As I passed the old Federal building, now screened in with heavy black tarps, I couldn’t help but notice a guy in an orange t-shirt reading “stop illegal foreclosures” getting out of a car. A Guy Fawkes mask, made famous by the 2005 movie V for Vendetta, and subsequently the anarchist/hacker group Anonymous, lay on the front seat. By the time of the march at 9am, there were about a hundred people gathered in the parking lot, with signs everywhere. Members of the group African Americans on Maui (AAOM) carried a few small signs–most notably a picture of King–and toted a few banners
Amendment rights are can march back here with people who know what their rights are,” yelled orange shirt, who was hoisting a sign that asked “Is Maui a police state?” At the front of the assembled march stood a lone Maui police officer. Everyone marching would have to get past him to leave the parking lot. Shortly after 9am, the bagpipes began piping, and people began to walk forward. The cop, wearing a bright orange safety vest, moved into Wells Street, where he stopped auto traffic. First, the AAOM marchers passed him. Some smiled, and a more than one broke ranks to walk over and shake his hand, which he seemed happy to do so. Then the union guys crossed Wells. Then the bagpipers. Then the First Amendment folks, all still holding their signs–often just pieces of cardboard with pro-peace messages scrawled on them–walked past. The cop didn’t move as each and every

that required two people to carry. Same with the public employee union HGEA, which had scores of members turn out, all wearing pale green shirts. They brought along two large banners. Near the back of the assembled march, behind the bagpipers and union guys, were about a dozen people carrying handwritten signs denouncing war and police. “Anyone who knows what their First

marcher walked past. Even orange shirt, though his Fawkes mask was now tied around his wrist. When the last of the marchers left the parking lot and crossed the street, the cop dashed over to his car and took off for the next intersection. And that was it. All the marchers, whose only real purpose was to show the county that people of all races could stand in solidarity on matters of peace and justice, walked down Main Street, crossed Church Street (where a second cop was holding up traffic), then crossed over to Market Street and walked up to Wailuku Coffee Co., where, at last, the bagpipes stopped playing.
CORRECTION In my Jan. 17 story “Unpaid Debts,” I mischaracterized Chris Salem’s experience with the Maui County Council. Salem spent 15 years working with the council, not for it. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1632n1

LOCAL PLUGS BY AXEL BEERS he plans to make enhancements to the visual presence of Akaku’s channels and expand the organization’s mission to empower community voices to include new communication and media technology including Twitter, Facebook, blogs, pictures and Instagram. “I feel that even somebody’s Tweet, Facebook status or uploaded picture is a form of free speech that Akaku should help to facilitate in its effort to reach to the entire community,” said Michael. Michael also plans to introduce dynamic ways to incorporate the community’s voice through Social Network TV, while having as much real-time content broadcast on the channel as possible. This will empower the community to broadcast and control images and messages on a screen without the sometimes extensive need of “creating a video.”

On Jan. 17, the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa General Manager Michael Jokovich presented the Ka Hale A Ke Ola Resource Center of Maui with a $15,000 grant as part of its Hyatt Community Grants philanthropic program. The check presentation took place at the Ka Hale A Ke Ola center and is part of a seven-year partnership between the two organizations in which the Hyatt Regency Maui has volunteered with Ka Hale A Ke Ola to provide hot meals to clients, coordinate holiday parties and arrange other activities for its residents. Their longstanding relationship made Ka Hale A Ke Ola a natural choice for the Hyatt’s generous Hyatt Community Grant. Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Centers, Inc, began in 1986 with the sheltering of the homeless in an old Puunene church building and since has expanded to include a five-acre site in Wailuku built in 1993 and a newly built Lahaina facility made possible through a partnership with the State of Hawaii, County of Maui, the Weinberg Foundation and other funding sources. Ka Hale A Ke Ola is a one stop resource center providing basic services and linking clients with more than 50 human service agencies to help with needs such as medical, mental health, vocational rehabilitation and financial services. Department of Health Wastewater Report, now available online. The County of Maui EPA/Department of Health Wastewater Report is a mandatory report issued by the County, required by a 1999 Consent Decree following a lawsuit with the State Department of Health and US EPA in which the county was accused of violations of State and Federal clean water law. These quarterly reports include steps taken by the County to develop and implement the various goals, plans, programs, procedures, schedules and budgets required pursuant to the Consent Decree, such as maintenance plans and status updates. The report also includes information of spills to the ground, state waters and waters of the United States. Among the gems in 2012’s fourth quarter report is news of a 566-gallon spill of raw wastewater on Christmas Day

Worried about the possibility of a sewage or wastewater spill near you? Could the pond near your house be the site of a recent and unpublicized poop spill? Let the County of Maui ease your mind with its latest EPA/
that occurred at Ani Street in Kahului. It was caused by a mainline blocked with rags and debris that made it to a waterway but not to the ocean. While this may seem alarming, the report also calculates the fact that over the course of 2012, this spill (and six others that occurred) over last year only accounts for 0.0011 percent of total wastewater processed. “Fulton Jail Will Get Working Cell Locks,” read the Dec. 19 Atlanta Journal-Constitution headline. The county commission serving Atlanta had finally voted to break a longstanding 3-3 tie that prevented buying new jailhouse locks–even while knowing that inmates could jimmy the old ones at will and roam the facilities, threatening and assaulting suspects and guards. The three recalcitrant commissioners were being spiteful because a federal judge had ordered various improvements to the jail, costing $140 million so far, and the three vowed to spend no more. The 1,300 replacement locks will cost about $5 million–but will not be installed right away.
CUTTING EDGE SCIENCE Behold, the “MacGyver” Spider: Biologist Phil Torres, working from the Tambopata national park in Peru, revealed in December that he had witnessed a tiny Cyclosa spider construct a replica of an eight-legged spider in a web made of leaves, debris and dead insects. Since the real spider was found nearby, Torres hypothesized that the wily arachnid had built a decoy to confuse predators.
LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS The Jiangdu District kindergarten recognizes that providing a quality education requires supporting the child emotionally as well as helping develop reading and other skills, and toward that end, it now requires teachers to hug each pupil twice a day–provided that the parent has paid the monthly “hugging fee” of the equivalent of about $12.80. An education agency investigation is under way, according to a December Shanghai Daily report, but one teacher defended the trial program as boosting a child’s confidence and establishing a “good mood” for learning.
FIRST WORLD CRISIS Researchers writing in the December issue of the journal Urology reported a “five-fold increase” over 10 years in emergency room visits for accidents caused by pubic-hair “grooming.” Unsurprisingly, 83 percent of all injuries appeared to be shaving accidents, but only 56 percent of the patients were women, according to a summary of the research on MedicalXPress.com. ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1632n3

THE 2013 MIND BODY SPIRIT ISSUE OUR TENTH ANNUAL GUIDE TO HEATH & WELLNESS
HEALTH SPAN
OVER LIFE SPAN BY JEN RUSSO
W
e all want to be healthier, but it often seems like doing so robs us of personal entertainment and indulgent consumption. After adhering to a life of austerity for a few days, we break our new year’s resolutions and go on, living and eating and not exercising as before. Modern technology, conveniences and lifestyles means we’re living longer lives, but not necessarily healthier lives. Or put another way, what’s the use of making it to 80 if you’re suffering a slew of diseases, taking a cocktail
of medications and can’t get around on your own? We’ve spent generations seeking to prolong our lifespan, when we should actually be concerned with our healthspan. Expanding your vocabulary of vigor and broadening your horizons to finding alternative sources of healing is one way to gain access to health. Exploring fitness and diet, naturopathy, bodywork, energy work and therapeutic touch is part of the steps of your journey to physical well-being. Hawaii supports some of the healthiest lifestyles in the nation, so living in the Aloha State might have
some health advantages–if you tap into it. Here on Maui, there are plenty of professionals ready to guide your way to enlightenment, body strength, wellness and spirituality. Our annual Mind Body Spirit issue sheds some light on a few of them. The Mind Body Spirit practitioners and therapies covered in this section are appropriate in a case by case basis. However specific individual’s reactions may vary. Neither the author nor the publishers can accept any responsibility for claims arising from any remedy or treatment. Hypnotherapy Sometimes folks need a little help taking action or changing their behavior. That’s where hypnotherapy can come in and reformat your thinking, kicking you out of a rut. Hypnosis was described in ancient Greek and Roman writings, and is believed to have been used in ancient Pacific, Asian and Egyptian cultures. In the uptight 1700s and 1800s it lost favor for a while–as it was believed to be part of witchcraft–but has made a comeback in modern psychology and medicine. Before the discovery of chloroform and other chemical alternatives, it was even used as an anaesthetic. Practitioner Maribeth Theisen says she got involved in psychology after counseling for trauma in her own life. She says she wasn’t able to make changes, and felt “stuck.” Hypnotherapy and other experiential methods of psychology
comes in and describes the problem and the desired goal. Once they are in hypnosis, there are a number of techniques I use that can help them create the outcome. For example, if they want to lose weight, we might talk to the ‘part’ of them inside that likes to eat; in that process we can discover at a deep level what purpose the behavior serves and substitute a different behavior that meets the same need. Or we may bring up the sensations that drive them to overeat and use those as a bridge to go back to the moment the pattern began in their lives and shift it in the past—much like taking a time machine and making it as if the person had never overeaten before. Or maybe we will give the person a virtual gastric bypass so they can’t eat much anymore.” Theisen says hypnotherapy can help just about any emotional issue, like anxiety and depression, but also physical pain, sleeplessness, smoking and many other

snapped her out of it, she says, inspiring her to learn the process and help others. “I provide hypnotherapy, NLP, EMDR, and PSYCH-K,” says Theisen. “These are all experiential methods that get people unstuck and rapidly resolve their issues. I’ve been in the field for 35 years. I first experimented with it in high school. I had some study in college. In grad school I learned surgical and psychiatric applications of hypnosis at Tulane Medical School. The doctor I studied with used it for anaesthetic in surgery and heals people of third degree burns in a third of the time it normally takes. I [also] studied inner work, dream work and parts work with Dean Schlecht, and learned regression therapy, natal regression and past life regression at the Hypnotherapy Academy of America.” Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation, similar to meditation except it gets the mind to focus on a channel of communication. Sometimes it’s described as being in an almost state of sleep, but in which you experience a heightened awareness. Within this state, you’re susceptible to suggestion and may also have access to shut-out memories. “Usually, when people are requesting a description, they want it about hypnotherapy,” says Theisen. “Typically, a person

Danceology Dancing is hardly new, but how you approach it as a fitness form or an emotional stimulation could be. Lisa Evans discovered beach dance almost by accident in Oregon partly with the help of MP3 technology and Apple marketing. “I’d been running and dancing on the beach by myself for a few years with different musical devices,” says Evans. “First with a Walkman, then a Discman and then an MP3 player. With the MP3 player, I was able to dance without having to hold onto anything. When Apple came out with iPod shuffles and their cool ads of shadow dancers, I thought it would be fun to get several people together to dance on the beach. I’ve always loved the ocean and dance has been an integral part of my life for the past 14 years. Combining the two together just made sense.” She moved her Beach Dance movement to Maui in 2012, and now every week there is an event held somewhere.
The weekly beach dance
“When you dance for your health, your entire being benefits,” she says. Amanda Furgiuele combines a different kind of nature, music and movement in her choreographed fitness classes at the Pole Room in Lahaina. Furgiuele led rock climbing, kayaking, caving expeditions and taught fencing in college, but found a love of pole dancing and teaching erotic dance as fitness was the most empowering of them all. “Ironically, the hardest part about the classes is actually coming to your first class,” says Furgiuele. “There is a lot of stigma about what pole and erotic fitness entail or signify for a woman, but these classes have been the most fun and empowering discipline I’ve ever taught! The Pole Room teaches all levels of pole dancing to everyone, no matter your size, shape, age, even gender. If you’re serious, we’ve got a place for you at the Pole Room. I believe in providing a judgmentfree space to empower women, womenidentified, and men in their own form of self-expression. There are absolutely NO mistakes in pole dancing, only each individual’s interpretation of the movement.” Evans says she was introduced to Ecstatic Dance more than a decade ago. Ecstatic dance observes the body movements as sacred and spiritual, and some even describe it as a trance state. At Beach Dance, it’s up to the individual to interpret, and all are invited to share the creative expression dance can offer. At the Pole Room, Furgiuele says every woman can benefit from her class, and ideal candidates are open-minded and ready to see a change in their bodies, spirit and overall attitude. She says it will train your body in a way you have never trained it before, and above all it is a fitness class. The next Beach Dance will be Friday, Jan. 25 at 4:30pm at Po’olenalena Beach Park, Wailea (check BeachDance. com for info). The Pole Room has an upcoming workshop on Jan. 27 at 2pm–pre-registration is required, so sign up at ThePoleRoom.com.
Kula, says. For people searching or just beginning their spiritual journey, she says her soul-centered astrology has helped. Put simply, astrology relates celestial events in the heavens with what’s happening here on earth. Where you were born and what time you were born will correspond with certain celestial events. There are also moon signs and sun signs and so much more in-depth analysis of your being. Daily and weekly horoscopes are one familiar aspect of astrology, but disciples of the practice find a deeper connection. Pursued as a science from the third millennium BC through the 17th century, it later was lost as an academic study. “When I started to work in a more commercial situation, through the spa at the Four Seasons, I met many intelligent and successful people who were also starting to pursue a deeper connection with their inner life and the world of meaning,” says Ross. “That sense of wonder and awakening is the most satisfying part of my work. I approach a new client with respect and curiosity and am thoughtful to solicit their permission to delve into those subtle places that reveal the depth of their true being. I was taught that it’s important to ‘stay a step behind’ so that each person can ultimately reveal themselves to themselves. In that way, I’m like a midwife of awakening.” Ross does readings on island and via Continued on page 13

Thai Bodywork Traditional Thai Massage is branch of Thai medicine. It’s therapy based on an energy work philosophy of healing through flowing “lom” a life force wind, known in other cultures as qi, chi, prana, mana and ki. Thai Massage Therapists manipulate the lom through the “sen,” the meridians along the body where this energy flows. Of course, all this sounds more complicated than it really is, and it’s been practiced for thousands of years as a sacred healing method in Southeast Asia. Matthew Galena, who teaches at the Thai Massage of Maui, says an apt description is as “Lazy Man’s Yoga.” He says the recipients of Thai massage are pushed, pulled, bent and twisted through a oneway partner session. The recipient is clothed, no oils are used and they allow themselves to be positioned, supported and moved about by the therapist. Galena says he got hooked for life when he was introduced to Thai Massage in his professional massage training in 2003. “Arthritis, tendinitis, carpal tunnel
syndrome and nerve entrapment all are effectively treatable in the long-term with massage and acupressure to release contracted muscle knots, and with stretching to lengthen the muscles, reducing strain on tendons and restoring needed space within the joints to prevent further unnecessary wear and tear using nothing more than fingers, palms, forearms, elbows, knees, feet and toes,” says Galena. “No medications dispensed or provided, no scalpels or lasers necessary. All you have to do is prevent the problems from happening in the first place by providing space. A little elbow room on the inside!” Thai Massage Therapists are also considered healers, and Galena believes there are not enough of them on Maui to service all of the people who could benefit. Galena has created the Thai Massage Institute because he says one of his biggest challenges is having enough practitioners to get to new clients. His answer to this are workshops and an internship program where, once you’ve attended any class, you may return to experience that class again for free. He hopes that by allowing students to return he will cultivate more healing hands in the community. “It’s important to remember, however, that Thai massage is not a cure,” he says. “It’s a treatment that encourages the body

to move in the right direction, especially by loosening and lengthening your muscles. Once relaxed and long, however, your muscles will still contract, shorten and clench because that’s exactly what they are designed to do! That’s how we move around! The body, however, is organic and ever-changing (for better or worse), especially when you’re working and playing hard with it. Here on Maui, we have surfing, windsurfing, stand-up paddling, outrigger canoeing, kite boarding, long distance biking, hiking, running, and dancing, just to name a few of our common high-impact hobbies. That’s what we do for play, so what about the rigors of work? All of these activities are wonderful for the adventurous soul, but it’s important to recognize that all this positive energy in ‘getting out’ can have long-term negative effects within, unless we intentionally keep them in check.” To find out more about workshops and the internships go to Thaimassageinstitute.com. Sexual Empowerment & Love Offerings Sexual sickness is a big taboo, and people who suffer from it are at a loss to describe it, much less heal what’s ailing them. Amrita Grace embraced her own sexual addiction to heal herself, then wrote about the process in her book Reclaiming Aphrodite. Now she shares her experience to help others overcome their own issues. In the book, Grace says she was sexually molested as a young girl and then spent 20 years in terrible relationships. She details her journey to wellness with personal stories and philosophies. “My motto is ‘Empowering Women From the Inside Out,’ and my intention is to give people the tools and practices that they can use to access their own inner wisdom and authority without needing to seek it outside of themselves, even if that means they never come to another one of my workshops,” says Grace. “I’m passionate about sovereignty and the idea that we are each whole beings, and when we bring that to a relationship, it pretty much
eliminates most of the co-dependency, power struggle and drama. I also believe that we are the creators of our lives, through the choices we make, whether they are fully conscious or not.”
Amrita Grace
Her next free talk comes up on Feb. 17 at the Temple of Peace, and her book is available as a free download at Reclaimingaphrodite.com. “My ideal client is a woman who has some sexual dis-empowerment, shame, abuse or wounding in her past, and who is ready to clear that away so that she can draw in healthy relationships,” she says. “She has tried therapy, various spiritual paths, and all kinds of healing work, but remains stuck around the area of her sexuality. She has the energy, time, and money to invest in a program of deep introspection and is ready and willing to face difficult emotions that she has been stuffing away for most of her life.”

time. Counselors who apply Kinesiology use a method of manual muscle testing– they touch an individual’s outstretched arm, which helps them identify issues that could be related to stress, injury, diet and so on. New goals can replace any unhealthy patterns they detect. Debra Greene, author of Endless Energy, says she uses her knowledge of Kinesiology, combined with other forms of study, to provide counselling called Inner Clarity (IC). Greene says the process is “like cleaning out the cobwebs of the mind and our internal junk drawers of limiting beliefs.” She says she taps into body energy using just a light touch on a person’s arm. “Energy testing acts as a feedback mechanism that opens up new channels of communication,” Greene says. “It allows us to go behind the scenes and get to the core of an issue. Using this powerful tool we can bypass automatic defenses so that questions can be asked and new answers revealed. Once that new information is brought into conscious awareness, insights abound and profound change is catalyzed. This deepseated change is reinforced by balancing the body’s energies according to the newly upgraded frequency. Our entire system, including the brain, is reconfigured. Then a reprogramming phase involves affirming and anchoring the changes into the system kinesiologically, right down to the cellular level.”
Greene got her PhD from Ohio State in Communication and Somatics, and says she was fascinated by humans and the paranormal. Her website YourEnergyMatters.com has many free videos and a toolbox for tapping into both your energy and that around you. Her book also acts as a guide to the science of energy medicine and how to utilize it to maintain your health. “I knew there had to be another way for us to overcome life obstacles that didn’t involve spending 10 years in therapy dealing with our mother issues, followed by another 10 years dealing with our father issues, only to perhaps have a life 20 years later,” says Greene. “We don’t have that kind of time anymore! Life is accelerating; we are accelerating along with it. It’s time for new technologies of the self that utilize the power of our subtle energies. Once that energy is accessed and consciously worked with, lasting change can–and does–happen quickly and easily.” Greene offers sessions at the Four Seasons Resort Spa in Wailea. To contact her, go to her website, or find her on Twitter (@DrDebraGreene). She will also be teaching a practical application of intimate relationship skills (PAIRS) course Feb. 9-10, which you can sign up for online. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1632L1

‘CREATING BETTER RELATIONSHIPS’ THE COLORFUL AND VIBRANT WORLD OF YOGA ON MAUI
I
n the fitness industry, people are hot for yoga. It has moved on from that college elective you take for easy credit, and it’s no longer just for hippies. Right now, somewhere on Maui, there’s probably a yoga class going on. By now, every quadrant of the island has a yoga studio, classes take place on the beach and most gyms offer yoga in their schedules. Yoga stems from traditional Indian Hindu philosophy that incorporates mind, body and spirit in its practice. In the late 19th century, the West began taking it up. Fast forward 200
years and you have an incredible assimilation of yogic culture into our fitness lifestyle, creating the diverse practices that many follow today. Many of the yoga classes are blends of philosophies, and renamed into approachable and understandable terminology for the lay student. At the Body Alive Yoga studio in Wailuku, owner Rachel Gonzalez leads classes like chill and flo, yogalates (a yoga pilates hybrid), lunch yoga and body rock yoga, each with their own distinct styles. Other classes include Kundalini, combat yoga, hatha and Happy hour flo. “I decided Wailuku was a great place
for my studio, because everyone has to come here; it’s the county seat, says Gonzalez. “I want to offer the community who live and work here a solid base for yoga. We wanted to create a pallet of selections to be accessible for all walks of life. Lunch class can be a great break for those people who want to get out of the office and maybe that’s the only time they have to practice. The Maui Yoga & Dance Shala just relocated a year ago to their spot on Baldwin Avenue in the historic train depot. Their schedule is full of dance and yoga classes for adults and kids. Owner Nadia Toraman has been teaching on Maui for
more than 10 years and has her own brand of yoga, which she calls Maui Aloha Yoga. Studio manager Karin Kuhn also teaches several classes six out of seven days a week. For keiki there is ballet, yoga, dance and hula at the shala. “We love this new location! says Kuhn. “It has great character with many of the old architectural elements in place but jazzed up with a full remodel that leaves the buildings feeling new and clean. Our keiki classes are our focus for this year and we are developing a solid daily offering that includes ballet, hula, creative dance, jazz/tap and yoga. Our

Gonzales talks about what you practice on the mat can be practiced at the office, at home, as you drive, as you live. She believes yoga is a medicine and that you can heal yourself. Studies have tried to quantify with science the results and benefits of doing yoga, but it’s hard to document. A Harvard Medical Health newsletter in April 2009 sums it up well by saying that “Many of the studies evaluating yoga’s therapeutic benefits have been small and poorly designed. But they did go on to say enough evidence exists to say that yoga helped stress levels, and that breath control aids depression sufferers. Kuhn says that yoga practice is an evolving philosophy that offers ancient answers to modern problems. She says yoga will be a lifelong journey for her and the benefit is that she gets to share the practice with others to make positive changes in the world. “Yoga offers guidelines on how to live a life that is rooted in non violence, truth, moderation, purity of intention, self reflection, devotion and love, says Kuhn. “It’s a disciplined path that requires commitment and courage but the benefits are numerous. The practice provide us with life skills that foster good physical, mental and emotional health. You will develop strength, coordination, balance, improve your posture, learn to breathe better and how to manage stress. This
will leave you feeling energised, clear headed, and calm. But even as we focus on creating more personal health, we are reminded to respect and nurture the health and well-being of others and our planet. One of the meanings of Yoga is ‘to yoke:’ it is a reminder that all things are connected, like the threads of a tapestry and that we can never flourish at the expense of something else. Yoga is therefore about creating better relationships. For us at Maui Yoga and Dance Shala, this means cultivating more community through a variety of offerings that brings us together. To introduce yourself to yoga, Maui Yoga and Dance Shala is offering 1 free class and a chance to win a 5 class pass, just take their ad on page 18 with you. THREE SPA GEMS HELPING YOU RELAX, HEAD TO TOE
EMILY GRACE ESTHETICS - PHOTO BY SEAN M HOWER
I
t’s time to take a break from the old grind, but what should you do? Here’s a thought: we found three hidden gems at local spas that are well worth their price in bath salt...
Makai Ritual at the Ocean Side Cabanas The Spa at Manele Bay 1 Manele Bay Rd., Lanai City 808-565-2088 FourSeasons.com/ManeleBay 100 minutes: $345 Kama’aina: 15 percent off services and retail Veljko Savic is a native of Serbia. He probably never guessed that he would end up as a spa manager on the island of Lanai, but with a decade in the health and wellness industry and a background in physiotherapy, he’s more than qualified to oversee the Four Seasons’ gorgeous facility. You have to take a ferry to get there, but that’s all part of the adventure. The Expeditions Ferry offers reasonable kama’aina rates, and Four Seasons has a free shuttle to pick you up at the harbor. All their treatments are offered at the Ocean Side Cabanas, which are perched atop the lava cliffs overlooking Manele Bay beach. The open air breeze and roar of the ocean below instantly sets the tone for some pretty amazing (and relaxing) therapy. The Makai Ritual is a 50-minute foot treatment and a 50-minute signature massage that increases circulation and unwinds muscle tension. Inside the spa, spend some time in the cedar sauna and eucalyptus steam room to open your pores and detoxify. “The best beauty advice we can give is to get enough sleep, drink enough water and eat clean healthy foods,” says Savic. “Beauty products and treatments are only supplemental to these vital basics. My number one must-have products from our spa gift shop are the Stone Crop products from Eminence Skin Care. The Stone Crop is a succulent, a relative to the cactus and a beneficial ingredient for the skin.
It minimizes pigmentation, deeply hydrates, soothes burns and heals irritation. Eminence offers it in a gel wash, moisturizer, toner, serum, body lotion or masque, and the best part is it’s for all skin types.”
Botinal Anti-Aging Facial Emily Grace Esthetics (By appointment only) 810 Kokomo Rd., Haiku 808-575-2222 Emilygraceesthetics.com 75 minutes: $120 Emily Grace runs her boutique day spa from a quiet, second level space in the Haiku Town Center. Inside, you’re enveloped in a cool, calm world. Her reputation as a professional waxer precedes her– which she says keeps her very busy–but the facials are pure bliss. She has a special acne facial and says she’s an expert at getting rid of the blemishes. The mini-facial is for those pressed for time–it’s her basic treatment, condensed into 40 minutes. Grace’s signature facial is her most popular, but the Botinal Anti-Aging is botox without the needle. The botinal covers your face in a cocoon; Grace says it’s not for those who suffer from claustrophobia, but the results are immediate. The cocoon effect didn’t bother me–in fact, it was nice to be quiet with my thoughts inward. The bonus is that your skin gets plumped and smooth. Grace advocates the use of good sunscreen and carries a line of mineral products that prevent sunburn, reduce the risk of sun cancers, wrinkles and dreaded pigmentation. She says to stay away from chemical sunscreens that are full of harmful ingredients. The GM Collins sunscreen she carries
run from $25 to $42 and are formulated with 100 percent mineral filters. “I have always been drawn to skin care and beauty from my youth,” she says. “I was inspired by my mother who took such great care of her skin and always had elegant beauty products I would sneak and use. When I developed acne as a teenager, I started getting routine facials to help my skin. It wasn’t just the clearing of my skin and products I enjoyed. It was the energy and touch of my esthetician that made me feel healed, too. That’s when I knew I wanted to be in the beauty business. I like to make people feel good. And I had so much knowledge of skin care. It was a perfect combination.” As far as what you can do at home for proper skin care, Grace has lots of ideas. “My best beauty advice is drink lots of water!” she says. “Water helps to hydrate the skin inside and out. Also ingest Omega Oils– they help protect and clear the skin. Flax Fish and Borage oils are great options.Your diet is everything. Keeping away from excessive dairy and gluten will help keep the skin clear. And always take the time to cleanse the skin at night. It’s very important to use a great night cream. Our skin rejuvenates while we sleep, so extra added moisture protection helps keep our faces beautiful.”
Couples Wabi Sabi Maui Zen Wailea Wailea Gateway Center 808-874-6000 90 minutes: $140 Collagen Microcurrent Facial for 75 minutes: $135 Maui Zen has imported their Westside style of day spa to Wailea in a brand new, gorgeous
second floor space in the Wailea Gateway. They bring their affordable luxury to the scene– quality therapies at a price point much lower than the larger resort spas. They have a spacious, ocean view couples treatment room that makes a perfect getaway for two. Their Wabi Sabi treatment is like no other, combining several schools of therapy. You will enjoy the full body zen massage with shiatsu, Hawaiian and Swedish techniques, a shiatsu facial massage that incorporates chilled stones and a foot reflexology treatment. The shiatsu facial and foot reflexology are heaven, head to toe. Owner Virginia Lacker says she was looking for a stress antidote for her corporate IT job when she discovered the spa industry and bought her Lahaina spa off Craigslist five years ago. Her spa helps her greatly in that regard. “We have a special collagen facial that uses electrical stimulation to maximize absorption of the collagen,” she says. “Our clients love the real and immediate results. Our esthetician does half of the face and will show you so you can see your beforeand-after difference. It’s a WOW moment! And we have a really comprehensive range of services for a local independent spa, featuring massage, body treatments, skincare, waxing, medical esthetics (botox, fillers), wellness services with medical supervision (bioidentical hormone replacement, weight programs) and acupuncture. All with an ocean view. Plus we offer special massage pricing for Maui fire, police and emergency services. These folks need stress relief in a big way!” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1632L3

Ahnold Is Back Too bad ‘The Last Stand’ is generic and long-winded BY BARRY WURST II
The Last Stand ★★★★★ Rated R / 107 Min.
A
cunning and highly sought after criminal (played by Eduardo Noriega, a great name for a villain, let alone an actor) is on the loose. A desperate federal officer (Forest Whitaker) is unable to catch him in time, especially when a super-fast Corvette, able to hit 197 miles in a second, is the getaway car. What the fugitive doesn’t expect is that, in order to meet his rendezvous point with his henchmen, he must cross through a small, dusty town, run by a sheriff who used to be a Los Angeles police officer. Once we see the sheriff in question is played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, we see how the villain is outnumbered. This is the first starring role Schwarzenegger has had in the 10 years since he starred in the underrated Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, became the Gov-
ernor of California, dealt with a personal scandal and published a mostly-tell all book. I’ve been a lifelong fan of his and, considering his reign as Mr. Universe, the biggest movie star in the world and the most unlikely of U.S. politicians, a middle aged comeback as an action movie star doesn’t come as a surprise. Schwarzenegger’s longtime friend and collaborator Sylvester Stallone once starred in a similarly modern day western called Copland, where the star transformed himself physically and played a soft spoken, painfully vulnerable and quietly heroic lawman who must take action to defend his town. Stallone was brilliant in that film, which showcased his finest performance. What Schwarzenegger does in The Last Stand isn’t in the same league and neither is the movie. During Schwarzenegger’s introductory scenes, he seems miscast but grows nicely into the role and brings a lot of heart and genuine world weariness to a part that was likely written for someone like Sam Elliot. The former Governator has never been given much credit for his acting ability but, in his best films, particularly the ones directed by James Cameron, he’s
actually first rate. Horoscope
Sign Language BY CAERIEL CRESTIN AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) You’re such a slut. Your actual sexual activity is irrelevant here; I’m referring to your social butterflyism, which has multiplied to truly shocking proportions. I’m surprised you can spare a minute between phone calls, appointments, lunch meetings, texts, and emails to even read this horoscope. Don’t worry, I’m not going to chastise you; you’re certainly entitled to work your magic on as many people as you can. But don’t forget the joys of developing one or two relationships to a greater depth, something that’s not always possible. Since it is this week, take the time to do it; who knows when your next chance will be? PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) It’s not that you’re ill-intentioned, but you’ve occasionally let semi-important relationships slip into semi-obscurity in the past. I’m sure in the back of your head you assumed that a sincere apology and a little effort on your part would repair these damaged friendships when and if you desired them in your daily life again. That’s mostly true, but occasionally there are those grudge-holders who won’t let it be that easy, like the buddy you’re about to let slip through your fingers. Don’t. It’s easier to make a little effort now than to move the mountains that will rise up between you if you let it wait. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Your karma’s flashing a yellow warning; you’re in danger of slipping into the kismet red zone. Your adherence to concrete reality has gotten you in trouble; Whereas you’d never stand idly by while your buddy was actually choking on a peach stone, you have let him stifle trying to wrap his head around a big, heavy issue. While he’s struggling to get air, things are piling up on his plate. I’m tempted to rush in and give him a spiritual Heimlich myself, but I don’t want you to miss this chance to repair the damage done by your inaction. Just remember; while most places (luckily) don’t actually have Good Samaritan laws (that require you to help people) on the books, the universe does. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) I’m relishing winter, contrary to my pessimistic predictions. Never mind the lovely spiritual metaphors the four seasons embody so perfectly, I’m digging the ritual of assuming and removing the cavalcade of layers that makes the freezing cold bearable. Something about taking off so many outer coverings has a soul-awakening side-effect—I think a few emotional barriers get carried along with, like a T-shirt static-magnetized to the inside of a sweater. May I recommend the same mini-ritual for you: regardless of the actual temperature, put on and wear for a while as many layers as you can stand. When you take them off, hopefully you’ll be just open enough to receive the sweetness that’s coming to you this week. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Area 51, a remote military base, first received widespread attention back in 1947 when newspapers reported (then quickly retracted) the capture of a flying saucer (near Roswell, NM), and again when a former employee, Bob Lazar, described entering an alien vessel. The area around Area 51 has spawned a legion of legends and pop culture. Like the self-aggrandizing legends you’re being fed by someone longing to be close to you, this one has a conventional explanation (that the area is used to develop and test new military aircraft technology). But since the truth is elusive and unknowable anyway, why not believe in the wilder version? It’s more fun. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Life mercilessly dishes out moments when you feel trapped in an airless room, with a sign persistently and aggravatingly blinking EXIT over a door-less brick wall. It’s a horrible feeling, and the taunting of the non-exit EXIT sign only makes it worse. Unfortunately, there’s no secret, heretofore-undiscovered way out this week. But there’s good news to accompany the bad: Just because there’s no magical escape route now doesn’t mean there won’t be sometime soon—probably sooner than you think. Hang tight, breathe deeply, and just use this chance to exercise your most hermitlike tendencies. You wanted some alone time? Here it is.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) This week, the last lesson in my ongoing series, “How to Survive and Thrive as a Leo in a Crazy World; Embracing Contradiction.” You may not have been aware I was grooming you for any kind of degree, but you’re so close to graduating that there’s no point in getting annoyed by my surreptitious educating now. Without further ado, the lesson, summed up in one pithy sentence: Live every day as if it’s your last, and as if you have all the time in the world. As soon as you deliver your thesis—proof that you’ve at last mastered this most difficult near-paradox, I’ll happily hand over your new title, one you should wear proudly: Evolved Leo. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Getting chomped by a baby rattlesnake is more dangerous than a bite from an adult rattler. That’s because young serpents can’t regulate the amount of venom they release per bite; instead of the measured dose that a fully-grown snake would deliver, they just squirt it all out. Why am I giving you a mini ophiology lesson? Because, like a baby rattler, you’ve recently been armed with a tool that could be much more powerful than you actually need to address your current situation. Please don’t blow your wad all at once; doing so would have drastic, unintended consequences: First, you could wreak damage you never intended, and second, you’ll regret it when you need some of that magic juice later. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) The impending, troubling events you’ve been dreading are like a handful of eighteen-wheelers, all speeding recklessly towards the five-way intersection where you are. Stop praying for an airlift rescue to escape the collision; that won’t happen. Keep cool. Don’t start eyeing the sidewalk or manhole covers as possible ways out. You’re ready for this. Just put on your white traffic-directing gloves, hold your ground, wield all the authority you can muster, and you should be able to guide them all safely past this potentially devastating conjunction with no consequence more unpleasant than a breath of diesel exhaust. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) This week you’re able to perform a metaphoric meteorological feat that will make you the envy of many more rained-on signs. You’re magically immune to snow, hail, rain, or sleet right now. Pretty cool. Also, in addition to not having to endure any of the actual foul weather, you’ve temporarily gained the ability to yank and use silver linings. One warning along with this fantastic blessing: Lest your ridiculous luck attract the attention of angry, resentful weathermen and rainedout farmers (which it almost certainly will, otherwise) you’d better share the wealth you reap, and fast.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) You make a big show of despising rules, but we both know that there are times when you desperately crave authority, limitations and strictures. It’s terrifying to be so powerful and multi-faceted. You’d be grateful for the occasional, temporary imposition of outside control, and the safety, structure, and predictability it provides. Sometimes all dormant creativity needs to be awakened is a bunch of lines to color outside of. Thinking outside the box is hard when there’s no box, so be grateful when it appears. Accept the indignity of short-term restriction this week, and you’ll reap benefits even I can’t fully predict or imagine. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) I’m sorry, I overlooked you this week. I let this slip until the very last minute. That’s what you get for being a wallflower. There are times to be a squeaky wheel and times to sit back and let things happen, and I thought you’d become an expert on determining which was which. Here’s a review. When you see a golden opportunity, get up and grab it. When someone’s looking for a scapegoat to blame, sit down and look busy. If someone already grabbed the opportunity you were too wimpy to snatch when you had a chance, smile politely and offer congratulations. And when someone’s blaming you for something that’s not really your fault (like forgetting to write your horoscope) throw it back in his face.
