he horrible lady that ran over an adult peacock on South Kihei Road needs to see how that feels! Learn to chill, this is Maui. Peacocks don’t move fast and when you honk they freeze. You were already stopped and waiting... Why not go around? Why run it over, killing it? What’s your rush? Killing amazing defenseless animals makes you one of the worst people in Kihei. I hope you get your karma over and over and over. Take your attitude back to where you came from. Maui is a place of peace and beauty. ■

'SAFER AT HOME'
G
overnor David Ige announced Tuesday that the state would begin “Phase 1” of plans to reopen businesses and activities that have been closed due to the COVID-19 public health emergency. The changes to the stayat-home order rules will go into effect Thursday, May 7. Some restrictions that have been lifted for the rest of the state will remain in effect on Maui. “Today was another victory in the battle with COVID-19,” said Ige. “Only four positive cases were reported. This makes more than two weeks of single-digit daily new cases. We have some of the lowest numbers of cases in the country and we have f lattened the curve. Now we can continue our phased approach to reopening our local economy.” The governor added that he referred to several metrics before deciding to proceed with reopening the state, such as a declining trend in positive COVID cases, the capacity of the health system to handle any potential outbreaks, and robust testing and contact tracing. “We have achieved all of these metrics,” Ige announced. Phase 1 of the reopening plan is titled “Stabilization,” and allows businesses and activities categorized as low risk to begin opening, as long as they can maintain social distancing, sanitation, and workplace and customer safety requirements. In addition to what is already deemed essential under current rules, the following businesses and activities will be allowed to open under the new state rules: non-food agriculture, including landscape, floral and ornamental; astronomical observatories and support facilities; car washes; pet grooming services; healthcare and social assistance, including elective surgery and non-emergent services; nonprofit organizations; retail businesses and services, including apparel, electronics and florists; shopping malls (except retail and shopping malls on Maui); and, wholesale and warehousing operations. The Governor advised residents to check with their county to confirm restrictions. As of press time, the
Mayor’s Office did not respond to a request to clarify any discrepancies between the state and county rules. The latest county guidelines are at Mauicounty.gov. “To ref lect this new approach to our COVID-19 response, the stayat-home order is now referred to as the safer-at-home order,” said Ige. “COVID-19 has taken a devastating toll on our economy. This is the first step in reopening businesses and getting people back to work.” The next steps to the reopening plan could be implemented in the coming weeks if progress against the disease continues, Ige said. “We anticipate making further announcements in the coming weeks,” he
Although encouraging people to shop at local businesses to stimulate the economy, Ige repeated the guidance, “You are safer at home.” Mayor Michael Victorino Tuesday shared Ige's optimism in looking at recent low positive COVID-19 test results, but continued to express caution and ask for Maui residents to cooperate with social distancing and hygiene recommendations. “I'm not gonna just jump the gun and try to be out in front of everybody in this respect,” said Victorino. Medical facilities in the county are limited, he explained, with small hospitals on Lana‘i and Moloka‘i, and only 26 ICU beds and 24 ventilators for all of Maui island.
of Hawai‘i Department of Health has put out there.” One guideline he emphasized was that although some stores would be open, they are not open for socializing and meandering aisles, but for focused shopping. Victorino added that testing would continue to be ramped up in the county, including upcoming antibody testing. Also in the works is a “Kama‘aina Jumpstart” program to stimulate the economy by encouraging locals to shop at locally owned businesses, which will in turn have special deals for kama‘aina. Last week, Victorino ordered the opening of select county parks for limited use, as well as golf courses. The latest county rules and open park

said, mentioning restaurants, hair salons, and places of worship as considerations for the next phase of reopening. But, Ige warned, “The health of the community is still our overriding priority. We have seen a recurrence in several places around the world and we need to make sure that this doesn't happen in Hawai‘i.” If the new rules cause an uptick in cases, “Some of the restrictions may need to be reinstated,” Ige said. “Your efforts have made this reopening possible. Your vigilance and commitment to social distancing are helping us win the fight against COVID-19. We are not out of the woods yet, but we are getting there.”
“This whole county has done a very terrific job as far as compliance and following directions and the policies set by not only the state, not only by the CDC and the feds, but here in the county itself and I'm very grateful for that. Again remember, this will only work if you put the right foot forward,” Victorino said. “I will open up as called for, but if anything starts to go wrong, I will not hesitate to shut down again,” said Victorino. “And I don't want to do that, so help me do it right. You can make a difference… You can prevent COVID-19 from coming back if you follow these basic guidelines, what the CDC, WHO, as well as the State
list is available at Mauicounty.gov. The state “safer-at-home” order rules are at Governor.hawaii.gov. As of noon May 5, there have been 625 total cases in the state. Seventeen have died of COVID-19, 551 have been released from isolation, and 73 required hospitalization. In Maui County, there have been 116 total cases, with 6 deaths, 17 requiring hospitalization, and 92 released from isolation. PARENTING IN THE TIME OF COVID The stay-at-home order brings
unprecedented challenges and opportunities for Maui's mothers
By Axel Beers
At some point today my bedroom, which now functions as an office, school, and meeting room, will be turned into a wild playground. While trying to write these words, my three school-aged children will pile in out of routine boredom, looking for something to do after making their daily rounds through the house. When this raucous happens, as is inevitable after weeks stuck at home, I know one thing: My partner and children’s mother has my back. Yesterday, she saved the day with colored markers and paper, and the “Three Marker Challenge.” Today, for now at least, she has them occupied with “Lego Challenge Cards” sent to us from our kids’ elementary school technology lab. Life under COVID-19 is part balancing act, part magic trick. We have work, school, meals to prepare, claims to file, a future to plan, and three kids under the age of 10 – all crammed into one living space, 24/7. While moms and dads are used to keeping up with the many demands of children, family, and household, the game’s changed. After almost two months of school-at-home, kids are restless, cooped indoors, and absorbing the uncertainty and anxiety surrounding the time we’re in. Mom’s
magic tricks, pulled out of a hat at a moment’s notice to redirect any wayward kiddo, have taken center stage. Mother’s Day will be different this year. Social distancing rules mean there will be no brunch out with Mom at a nice restaurant, spa days, or family beach outings this Sunday. But now perhaps more than ever, moms deserve to be celebrated for all they are doing in families stuck at home across the island. “Balancing is one word for it!” says Kate Griffiths, editor in chief of Mauimama Magazine and mother of an 11-year old and 13-year-old. “My plate was already pretty full, but the pandemic has taken it to a whole different level.” “One minute I’m helping my son review chapter 25 of To Kill a Mockingbird, to switching gears remotely shadowing a councilmember during budget, to answering community concerns and questions via The Mauimama, to helping my 5th grader with perfect nouns, to holding up a friend trying to make sense of the insanity, all while trying to help create a more sustainable infrastructure for my community that relies less on tourism, to making sure a good meal is put on the table
and the house is still tolerable to live in,” says Griffiths, who also works for Councilmember Kelly King. “The bags under my eyes tell my story louder than I can, but things are easing up a little as budget season winds down and the new norm has become well... the new norm.” “I have had to remind myself I am on maternity leave and this is my time to get to know and bond with my son,” says Kerry Foltz, a high school teacher and mother of a newborn. She’s been taking extra precautions to isolate her son from possible
exposure to the virus. “I won’t have this time forever. I am still trying to do my best to provide lessons and enrichment to students, but I need my full attention in one place or the other. That’s what is nice about a dedicated work day. Now, I find myself making lessons outside of work hours because I simply cannot when my baby needs me and is awake.” The “new norm” may look a bit different for each family, but to some it's an opportunity to rethink priorities and values. “My priorities changed dramatically,” says Krystal Cabiles, mother of 7- and 10-year-old daughters. “Balancing this circus is quite a fiasco at times. My main priority now is educating my children and keeping them happy and healthy, whereas preCOVID I relied on their teachers and school to do so… If I am being completely honest, I am barely balancing it all. Some days on the verge of tears. I must remind myself constantly to breathe. There is no right or wrong in how I choose to deal with what is going on. If I can accomplish just one thing that day, it’s a win. I try not to worry so much about the unforeseeable future. I tackle today and make a game plan for tomorrow, but that is as far ahead that I can control. ” “In the beginning we had a schedule,” says Jen Mather, “but it’s completely degenerated into a Wild West free-for-all interspersed with my eldest daughter trying to watch all 40 seasons of 'Survivor.' It is a little like 'Survivor;'everyone fends for themselves. We’re always late to online meetings and in-person assistance, which is strange because in non-COVID-19 times we were always early. Thankfully my girls are old enough to do things on their own for themselves, and even sometimes for me... Except for dishes. Dear God, all the dishes.” “I wish I could be more involved in [my children’s] schooling,” says Councilmember Tamara Paltin, mother of two children under the age of 10. “I do worry that they aren’t getting enough education because I have so much work and I’m not able to keep up and help them as much, since they are in [Hawaiian] immersion and my husband and I went to English language school. Since I was elected, the 'olelo [language] classes have gotten harder and harder to attend. Overall I just try not to worry too much and do the best I can at any given moment.” It's given her kids the chance to step up. “Things all evolved to work out and they got used to being more independent and responsible in some areas,” Paltin says. “Being home alone with the kids, while working nearly 80 hours a week throughout the County’s budget session, trying to fit in schoolwork with my children, while managing our families most basic needs, like groceries, hygiene, emotional support, sleep schedules, taking care of animals, etc., brought about severe feelings of inadequacy as a parent,” says Sarah Freistat Pajimola, a mother of two children ages 4 and 7 who works for Councilmember Keani Rawlins-Fernandez. “As someone that survives and thrives with order, schedules, and structure, suddenly that delicate balancing act that every mother somehow pulls off – while wobbling on a thin

Winners of our Warrior Moms Mother's Day Photo Contest, Alicia Cotter (mom) and Izzy Cajudoy (daughter) we are returning to a more manageable work schedule, I am looking forward to creating some healthy routines for us all.” It's a common theme with mothers I speak to. Moms, expected to be ever-selfless, expect the same from themselves even now, in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic and global crisis. But defining the “new normal,” some mothers have found, is an opportunity. “Even through the madness, I can honestly say that I have thoroughly enjoyed being home with my family and don’t want things to return to 'normal,' says Freistat Pajimola. “This virus has forced us all to reflect on everything important that has been neglected in our busy lives. I realize that I really missed my kids and being home enough to enjoy them and it.” “Go easy on yourself and them too, there is no right or wrong way to survive or thrive during a global pandemic,” she advises. “Stay safe and healthy, breathe through the stressful times, laugh loud and long, and cuddle as much as humanly possible. Eventually, quarantine will be over, and you might just miss it.” “If there is a personal silver lining to this pandemic, for my family, it is the quality time together and that quarantining and working onisland, coupled with them not being in school, have allowed us to enjoy meals together. Breakfast, lunch, and sometimes even dinner. That means a lot to all of us,” says Councilmember Keani Rawlins-Fernandez of Moloka'i, mother of two. “As parents, know you’re doing the best you can, and try not to compare yourself to what it seems like others are able to do on

social media. Mom-guilt is real. But try to see yourself from your children’s eyes. Have patience. Breathe when patience runs thin, for your children won’t be this young forever. We get one opportunity to have them at 8 or 10 years old, and that’s it. Enjoy them at this age.” Griffiths agrees. “Personally, I have a small window before my sons will be too cool to hang out with me and then go off to college. Until then I’m soaking up every day that I can go find them in a nearby room to hug and kiss them. We are safe, healthy and happy and this time to reset has not gone amiss. “This too shall pass. Everything has its season and if you can turn this into an opportunity to connect with your keiki and help with your child’s growth it will be time well spent. Some days are definitely more trying than others. Reach out to a friend or family member on those days, even though we are isolated in our homes you do not need to do this alone. We are enduring a pandemic. These are not normal times. Check in with your children regularly and listen. Allow them to be heard and connect with them. thread of sanity – was shoved into a confined space where carefully coordinated worlds collided. It took longer than friends and family members advised, for me to let go and realize everything was going to have to just 'be,'” says Freistat Pajimola. “Accepting chaos and imperfection was hard, but everyone was better off for it. Now that budget session is over, and
Alicia and Izzy have stayed busy during isolation with Zoom classes, video chat, bocce ball, and new recipes. This Mother's Day is a 'perfect time to spoil that special lady who doesn't like to spoil herself!' says Alicia sense of community and amazing people on the islands who are here to help. And most of all be gentle on yourself. No one can be everything to everyone. “Hold your little ones tightly and do what works for you and your family, take it day by day, and find solace that you are trying your best.” Happy Mother's Day to all the moms holding it down across the island, especially the one keeping me and the kids sane during this pandemic and my own mom who put up with me back when I was a wayward kiddo. Griffiths recommends two resources for parents of school-aged children and anyone in need of assistance during these times: the Keiki Central database online at Auw211.org/keikicentral and via phone by dialing 211, and Islands of Hope which is available at 808-214-0781. ■

Stuck inside? Revisit a director’s movie debut!
Mousehunt Hard Eight ★★★★★ Rated R/101 Min. ou can tell a lot about a filmmaker from their first movie. In some cases, a first-time director is doing the best they can with very little, trying to demonstrate their talent and somehow shape a competent movie. Just look at James Cameron’s unfortunate debut, Piranha II: The Spawning. Another notable example is Martin Scorsese’s breakout work, Who’s That Knocking at My Door, which feels like a trial run for the themes of Catholicism, neighborhood gangsterism, and loyalty that would mark his later works. You can tell that, right from the start, he was incapable of making a boring, impersonal movie. On the other hand, there are directors like Steven Spielberg, Spike Lee, Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino, and George Lucas, whose first films announced their arrival, demonstrated their talents and obsessions, and all but declared, Here I Am! Add Paul Thomas Anderson to that list of first-timers who went roaring out the gate after just one movie. Before making Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, and There Will Be Blood (among other great films), Anderson first arrived on the film scene with Hard Eight in 1996. It’s a small film made with confidence and skill, featuring a cast that absolutely slays their roles and brings Anderson’s funny, unpredictable screenplay to life. We meet John (played by John C. Reilly in his first starring role) at what appears to be the low point of his life; he’s broke, alone, and squatting in front of a diner, seemingly defeated. An older man named Sydney (played by Phillip Baker Hall) takes pity on John, buys him coffee and, while sitting at a booth, casually offers to change the course of his life. The opening shot is perfection, a controlled, long-held gaze that both sets up and (in retrospect), encapsulates the entire story. Sydney does not waste John’s time and, in the same way with us, neither does the movie; there isn’t a scene here that doesn’t move the story forward. Sydney, full of secrets and fatherly advice, tells John only what he needs to know on a moment-to-moment basis. Also in Sydney’s world is a sweet, vulnerable casino waitress (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) and a cheerful, dangerous figure named Jimmy (played by Samuel L. Jackson). This is one of those great films where anything can happen, as there’s no formula in place. Character, story, and mood are the driving forces. Nothing here feels inevitable.
Y
Despite the presence of Jackson and the bursts of violence in the third act, this isn’t one of those post-Pulp Fiction Tarantinowannabees. Anderson’s ability to weave a great story and place his audience in a vivid world is the driving force. Hard Eight suggests that who we fall under the influence of is the one who guides and shapes us. Hall gives a master-class performance, portraying a man who thinks very carefully before he chooses each word. Sydney knows all the angles, a man seemingly in control of his destiny. John is a stark contrast: the pupil, the fool, and someone fumbling after approval. Reilly is wonderful, both achingly vulnerable but so sweet and earnest you root for his character, even when his actions reveal how ill-equipped he is at navigating a hardened, grown-up world. This arrived a decade before Reilly became one of Hollywood’s most durable character actors and MVP comedy performers. He shines brightly here. So does Paltrow who, likewise, was a few years from breaking out and uses this opportunity to give a layered, always believable performance. Jackson is in his element, displaying the fire in his eyes that marked his early work (he was just a few years removed from Pulp Fiction when he made this). A wild cameo appearance by the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman is another highlight. The resolution of Sydney’s third act problem is not a misstep, exactly. Yet, it seems more of a genre requirement than a proper plot turn. It’s the only instance where Anderson’s imagination comes up short. The final shot is a keeper; it’s subtle and quick but says so much. Taken as is, this a terrific film and a major find. As a representation of what a first-time director can do, it served as a calling card for a brazenly original film artist. (On Kanopy) Place Your Bets on an Overlooked Winner: Writer/director Aaron Sorkin’s 2017 real-life thriller Molly’s Game, is one of those little-seen masterpieces that gets lost in the overloaded Christmas movie season and never finds the audience it deserves. It stars Jessica Chastain in a fierce, captivating turn, as Molly Bloom, the Olympic skier who became highly sought after for her high stakes poker games. Idris Elba and a never-better Kevin Costner are terrific in supporting turns. We all know Sorkin is a gifted writer (he wrote A Few Good Men, The Social Network, and TV’s “The West Wing”) but his directorial debut has the energy and style of a highly caffeinated David Fincher film. Frequent readers of my column know I don’t give out a lot of five-star reviews, but I certainly did for this one. (On Netflix) One More Sleeper from a First Timer: When you open the same weekend as Titanic and Tomorrow Never Dies, you’re bound to get left behind. That’s what happened to director Gore Verbinski’s 1997 debut, Mouse Hunt, a wild, fiendish, live-action Disney comedy that found its audience much later. Nathan Lane and Lee Evans winningly play the Smuntz brothers, who battle a tiny rodent for domination of their massive home. Yes, it’s silly, but full of brilliant slapstick set pieces and family-friendly gags that are funny enough for keiki and parents alike. (On Hulu) ■

TAURUS (APR. 20-MAY 20) “The future belongs to those who see possibilities before they become obvious,” says businessperson and entrepreneur John Sculley. You Tauruses aren’t renowned for such foresight. It’s more likely to belong to Aries and Sagittarius people. Your tribe is more likely to specialize in doing the good work that turns others’ bright visions into practical realities. But this Year of the Coronavirus could be an exception to the general rule. In the past three months as well as in the next six months, many of you Bulls have been and will continue to be catching glimpses of interesting possibilities before they become obvious. Give yourself credit for this knack. Be alert for what it reveals.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Aphorist Aaron Haspel writes, “The less you are contradicted, the stupider you become. The more powerful you become, the less you are contradicted.” Let’s discuss how this counsel might be useful to you in the coming weeks. First of all, I suspect you will be countered and challenged more than usual, which will offer you rich opportunities to become smarter. Secondly, I believe you will become more powerful as long as you don’t try to stop or discourage the influences that contradict you. In other words, you’ll grow your personal authority and influence to the degree that you welcome opinions and perspectives that are not identical to yours.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUN. 20) For 148 uninterrupted years, American militias and the American army waged a series of wars against the native peoples who lived on the continent before Europeans came. There were more than 70 conflicts that lasted from 1776 until 1924. If there is any long-term struggle or strife that even mildly resembles that situation in your own personal life, our Global Healing Crisis is a favorable time to call a truce and cultivate peace. Start now! It’s a ripe and propitious time to end hostilities that have gone on too long.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) “It’s always too early to quit,” wrote author Norman Vincent Peale. We should put his words into perspective, though. He preached “the power of positive thinking.” He was relentless in his insistence that we can and should transcend discouragement and disappointment. So we should consider the possibility that he was overly enthusiastic in his implication that we should NEVER give up. What do you think, Sagittarius? I’m guessing this will be an important question for you to consider in the coming weeks. It may be time to re-evaluate your previous thoughts on the matter and come up with a fresh perspective. For example, maybe it’s right to give up on one project if it enables you to persevere in another.
CANCER (JUN. 21-JUL. 22) Novelist Marcel Proust was a sensitive, dreamy, emotional, self-protective, creative Cancerian. That may explain why he wasn’t a good soldier. During his service in the French army, he was ranked 73rd in a squad of 74. On the other hand, his majestically intricate seven-volume novel In Search of Lost Time is a masterpiece – one of the 20th century’s most influential literary works. In evaluating his success as a human being, should we emphasize his poor military performance and downplay his literary output? Of course not! Likewise, Cancerian, in the coming weeks I’d like to see you devote vigorous energy to appreciating what you do best and no energy at all to worrying about your inadequacies. LEO (JUL. 23-AUG. 22) “Fortune resists half-hearted prayers,” wrote the poet Ovid more than 2,000 years ago. I will add that Fortune also resists poorly formulated intentions, feeble vows, and sketchy plans – especially now, during an historical turning point when the world is undergoing massive transformations. Luckily, I don’t see those lapses being problems for you in the coming weeks, Leo. According to my analysis, you’re primed to be clear and precise. Your willpower should be working with lucid grace. You’ll have an enhanced ability to assess your assets and make smart plans for how to use them. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEP. 22) Last year the Baltimore Museum of Art announced it would acquire works exclusively from women artists in 2020. A male art critic complained, “That’s unfair to male artists.” Here’s my reply: Among major permanent art collections in the U.S. and Europe, the work of women makes up five percent of the total. So what the Baltimore Museum did is a righteous attempt to rectify the existing excess. It’s a just and fair way to address an unhealthy imbalance. In accordance with current omens and necessities, Virgo, I encourage you to perform a comparable correction in your personal sphere. LIBRA (SEP. 23-OCT. 22) In the course of my life, I’ve met many sharp thinkers with advanced degrees from fine universities – who are nonetheless stunted in their emotional intelligence. They may quote Shakespeare and discourse on quantum physics and explain the difference between the philosophies of Kant and Hegel, and yet have less skill in understanding the inner workings of human beings or in creating vibrant intimate relationships. Yet most of these folks are not extreme outliers. I’ve found that virtually all of us are smarter in our heads than we are in our hearts. The good news, Libra, is that our current Global Healing Crisis is an excellent time for you to play catch up. Do what poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti suggests: “Make your mind learn its way around the heart.”
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) The 16-century mystic nun Saint Teresa of Avila was renowned for being overcome with rapture during her spiritual devotions. At times she experienced such profound bliss through her union with God that she levitated off the ground. “Any real ecstasy is a sign you are moving in the right direction,” she wrote. I hope that you will be periodically moving in that direction yourself during the coming weeks, Capricorn. Although it may seem odd advice to receive during our Global Healing Crisis, I really believe you should make appointments with euphoria, delight, and enchantment. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Grammy-winning musician and composer Pharrell Williams has expertise in the creative process. “If someone asks me what inspires me,” he testifies, “I always say, ‘That which is missing.’” According to my understanding of the astrological omens, you would benefit from making that your motto in the coming weeks. Our Global Healing Crisis is a favorable time to discover what’s absent or empty or blank about your life, and then learn all you can from exploring it. I think you’ll be glad to be shown what you didn’t consciously realize was lost, omitted, or lacking. PISCES (FEB. 19-MAR. 20) “I am doing my best to not become a museum of myself,” declares poet Natalie Diaz. I think she means that she wants to avoid defining herself entirely by her past. She is exploring tricks that will help her keep from relying so much on her old accomplishments that she neglects to keep growing. Her goal is to be free of her history, not to be weighed down and limited by it. These would be worthy goals for you to work on in the coming weeks, Pisces. What would your first step be? ARIES (MAR. 21-APR. 19) According to Aries author and mythologist Joseph Campbell, “The quest for fire occurred not because anyone knew what the practical uses for fire would be, but because it was fascinating.” He was referring to our early human ancestors, and how they stumbled upon a valuable addition to their culture because they were curious about a powerful phenomenon, not because they knew it would ultimately be so valuable. I invite you to be guided by a similar principle in the coming weeks, Aries. Unforeseen benefits may emerge during your investigation into flows and bursts that captivate your imagination.
