T
he ocean and its many wonders are an indelible part of the Valley Isle; they help define the island and enhance its unique appeal. The same could be said for the winners of this year’s Best of Maui. From sandwiches to snorkeling spots, pupus to politicians, bartenders to beaches, these are the people, places and things that make living here—on land and in the water—truly special. Once again, you voted in record numbers, and we present your choices—augmented by a few purely subjective staff picks—on the following pages. Inside you’ll find a lot of old favorites, some surprises and maybe a few things you’ve yet to experience. (And remember: if you agree with the winners, it’s all us; if you hate them, well, you’re the ones who voted.) So pull yourself away from those warm waves for a minute (we know, it’s a lot to ask) and dive in…

LOCAL CLOTHING DESIGNER HARDWARE STORE
Maui Thing
Marmac Ace Hardware
Anything that utilizes an octopus as its primary emblem gets my vote. Adding to Maui Thing’s worthiness in this category is that it signifies a shift in consciousness on-island—a move toward localism, sustainability and community-mindedness. Most of the items sold here are locally created screen prints featuring a whole slew of funky designs for dudes, ladies and even the young’ns. Some sport an oversized peace sign, others the telltale cephalopod and many, of course, feature the brand’s super positive slogan, “Stuck on Good.” Their Wailuku shop is usually hopping on First Fridays, when they feature the likes of the Vince Esquire Band and the Throwdowns. 7 N. Market St., Wailuku, 808891-8595. [KB]
Though much smaller than big name stores like Lowes and Home Depot, Marmac Ace Hardware makes up for its lack of size with a knowledgeable staff and extensive selection. They’re conveniently located and not too big to get lost in. Earning the name “the helpful hardware store,” Ace is definitely the place for all your hardware needs. 334 Alamaha St., Kahului, 808-877-3931. [CP]
Runner up: Home Depot, Kahului
SECOND-HAND STORE Rainbow Attic
Runner up: Tamara Catz, Paia
Maui Time readers like the great deals and eco-friendly shopping at Rainbow Attic, which has been on-island for 17 years helping folks make money by selling their unwanted and lightly used items.Their stock includes furniture, home décor and designer goods, and their selection is great for tropical island wear. Whether you need sunglasses, a desk or a Coach purse, you can shop smart and recycle at Rainbow Attic. 1881 S. Kihei Rd. #B5, Kihei, 808874-0884. [JR]

SALON
LASER HAIR REMOVAL
Soleil Luna Salon and Spa
Dr. Bennett’s Med Spa
The relaxation begins as soon as you step out of the hot Lahaina sun and into this perfectly air-conditioned, peaceful Mecca of beauty and pampering. I’ve never had my hair or nails done here, but I’ve seen plenty of smiling, satisfied customers strutting out the door, their TV commercial hair blowing perfectly in the breeze. I adore the cucumber infused water that’s served in the waiting room, and there always seems to be good specials going on for facials and waxing. 242 Lahainaluna Rd., Lahiana, 808-662-0203. [JA]
The friendly and reputable staff of Dr. Bennett’s Med Spa are at the ready to resolve any hair issues. With affordable packages and top-of-the line laser technology you won’t believe the hairlessness you can achieve here. I went in to get my underarms done and there was no shaving for months—just smooth skin all the way. 62 Baldwin Ave., Paia, 808-579-8979. [JR]

Borders Books & Music
“
You won’t believe the hairlessness you can achieve here.
”
Even though Maui has been giving Borders love for two years in our Best of Maui edition, it’s not immune to the economic downturn. The mega-bookstore that carries thousands of books and music in a comfortable and convenient package is one satellite store short this year. The closing of Border’s at Whaler’s Village in West Maui was a disappointment; especially when seeking out their sections solely dedicated to all things Hawaiian and Maui-centric.Yet there is a silver lining. The Best Bookstore winner still has its Borders Express stores open in Kihei and the Queen Kaahumanu Center in Kahului, as well as the larger version—just Borders—on Dairy Rd. in Kahului. Islandwide. [HN]
Pacific Rootz Tattoo & Body Piercing I’ve always believed that the body is a temple. And what’s a temple without a bit of decoration? Pacific Rootz specializes in Polynesian style tattoos, or tatau. The only problem I have with tattoos is I never know what I want to get. Maybe sakura flowers? Or another gamer tattoo (to stay true to my roots)? The regular Pacific Rootz artists are Samson, Tom and Jasn. Jasn does amazing piercing work, for those of you who would rather adorn your temples with a different type of decoration. To see samples of their work visit myspace.com/pacificrootztattoo. And don’t forget to tip your artist! 1847 S. Kihei Rd. #102, Kihei, 808-8911828. [YT]

For more than 20 years, HiTech has stayed on the cutting edge of board-riding technology, by providing an array of quality equipment from the industry’s leading shapers and designers. From sails to sunscreen, Hi-Tech sells everything one needs for some serious playtime in the water. But beyond years of selling merchandise, Hi-Tech has been a time-tested supporter of Maui’s surfing community. The shop sponsors several amateur surfers, and owner Kim Ball is leading the fight to have public schools sanction surfing as an interscholastic sport. 425 Koloa St., Kahului, 808-877-2111. [BE]

A crummy mask can turn snorkeling from awesome to lousy, and with SCUBA, well, when it comes to breathing underwater you kinda want to make sure you’ve got everything in working order. Maui Dive Shop has been serving the island’s sublevel needs for more than 30 years (the first shop opened in the Maui Mall in 1978). From novice to pro, local to tourist, they’ve got the equipment and expertise to make sure your aquatic adventure is safe and memorable. Dive in. 2463 S. Kihei Rd., Suite A-15, Kihei, 808-879-1533. I wonder what it’s like to work in a head shop. No, really. The characters would be extremely interesting; perhaps enough to write a book. That’s how Ken Kesey developed the characters for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, except his place of employment was a mental ward. Anyway, this Kihei head shop has all your legal tobacco smoking needs covered, including water tobacco pipes, rolling paper for rolling large tobacco cigarettes, scales for weighing mail to help you determine postage and more. Expect reggae music and a barrage of red, yellow and green when walking through the door. 320 Ohukai Rd. # 404, Kihei, 808-879-2826. [KB]

LOCAL BOUTIQUE
Grace Beauty Day Spa
Mahina Boutique
If graduate level mass media ethics taught me anything, it is the following: when profiling a bikini waxing salon, it’s best to adopt an approach that utilizes a categorical imperative rather than one that embraces utilitarianism or moral relativity. As such, we agree for these purposes that unwanted hair should be removed and done so by any means necessary, and that hot wax is a most effective means of removing hair from what one researcher calls the “bathing suit area” (which shall subsequently be known as BSA). Paia’s Grace Beauty salon does so in a manner that clearly pleases a high percentage of Maui Time readers. Hair removal practitioners are willing and able to remove hair in the BSA to a degree determined by the owner of said hair—bikini, bikini deluxe or full-on Brazilian. 62 Baldwin Ave., Paia. 579-9779. [KB]
I have a problem. I can’t walk into Mahina without buying something. And I’m not the only one; the girls I work with always seem to be wearing some cute new thing from there. Luckily for me the clothes are super affordable and luckily for us the inventory changes constantly so we can keep shopping there without all wearing the same outfit. Maui doesn’t have a lot of unique boutiques, but thank the fashion gods that there are a few good ones like Mahina. 1913-B South Kihei Rd., Kihei, 808879-3453. [JA]

AUTO MECHANIC Bruno Goldberg The independent, community mechanic who runs his shop like his own garage (and possibly in his own garage) has been eclipsed over the years by big chains and dealerships. So it was refreshing to see both first and second place in this category go to guys who keep it small and local. Obviously, though, it’s the reliability and quality of the work that matters most. Judging by the support they received from readers, these guys both have plenty of loyal, satisfied customers. (Note: A message on Goldberg’s machine said he’ll be out of the shop ‘til July 27). 253 Nehe Pl., Makawao, 572-5689. [JS]

They have an exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable staff of animal lovers who can help demystify the finer points of pet parenthood. 70 E. Kaahumanu Ave., Kahului, 808-877-3040. [CP]

With stand-up paddle boarding’s exploding popularity has come a profusion of rental outlets. There are multiple worthy options on-island, and which place you go really depends on what you’re looking for. If it’s convenience and selection, wade into Hawaiian Island Surf & Sport. With an array of options to suit all sizes, styles and skill levels, they’ll have you in the water in no time. And, while this category is about renting a paddleboard—which is a good option considering their expense—if you fall in love with the sport and want to own, Surf & Sport can certainly oblige. 415 Dairy Rd., Kahului, 808-871-4981. RECYCLING CENTER Kihei Recycling Center What makes a good recycling center? An easy-to-access location? Check. Convenient hours? Check. People who’ll help you sort your bottles and cans and hand you a few bucks for your trouble? Check. Kihei Recycling Center also boasts remarkably few flies. I’m not saying there aren’t any, but considering the place is full of sticky beer and soda residue and old crusty cans, you’d think it’d be swarming with insects. Not so. I don’t know if the center necessarily deserves credit for this (though they do keep things relatively clean), but still, it makes the chore of tossing out your reusable refuse, if not pleasant, at least wholly tolerable. Welakahao Rd. off Piilani Hwy., Kihei. [JS]

GREEN BUSINESS Rising Sun Solar As more and more people wake up to the reality that non-fossil fuel energy sources are a necessity—and as the government rolls out intriguing tax incentives—it’s a good time to be in the solar power business. And there are few better places to be in the solar power business than Maui. Rising Sun does both commercial and residential installations and has the expertise to tailor a system to your specific needs. If you do it right, you’ll be helping the push for a more sustainable future and saving money on your power bill. Here comes the sun, indeed. 810 Kokomo Rd., Suite 160, Haiku, 808-579-8287. [JS]

Casanova invites you to a romantic 4 course meal for 2 PLACE TO BUY AN UKULELE Bounty Music This past winter, when it rained nearly every morning (at least in Wailuku), I would hear the neighbor kids walk up and down the street, strumming their ukes in a manner most eerie, a quality that the rain seemed to amplify. “Only in Hawaii,” I would think before hitting the snooze button. Ukulele’s versatility and potential for musical innovation has been a well-kept secret on the isles. Anyone not aware of the uke’s multidimensional nature will be astounded upon walking into Bounty and seeing the colorful plethora of these little stringed instruments hanging from the shop’s walls and doorways. They come in all shapes and sizes, and the staff is well versed enough to get you the perfect instrument to suit your needs. 111 Hana Hwy. #105, Kahului, 808-871-1141. COUNTY OFFICIAL
POLITICAL ACTIVIST
Jo Anne Johnson
Lance Holter
Winning this award once is one thing; could be a fluke, or based on a single, transitory issue. But the fact that Councilmember Johnson has been voted Maui’s top county official multiple years in a row—and, has, in fact, dominated the category—shows she’s truly doing something right. That something is faithfully serving her West Maui constituents, and working to earn and keep their trust. Term limits mean this is Johnson’s final go-round on the council. She’ll go out having gained widespread respect from colleagues and voters, which is all any politician can ask. [JS]
“No-nonsense” and “pull-no-punches” are two good ways to describe Lance Holter. Another one is “dedicated.” Among other things, Holter is chair of the Sierra Club Maui Group, but his commitment to environmental and social justice issues dates back to his days in the Peace Corps. Our own Rob Parsons once compared him to an iconic old West sheriff in a white hat, and that’s pretty much right on the mark. The key difference is Holter has no plans to ride off into the sunset—not with so many important battles left to fight. [JS]

USE OF COUNTY FUNDS Maui Bus
COUNTY BLUNDER

TVR crackdown
Hawaii Superferry
Maui has no shortage of divisive issues, many of them related, directly or indirectly, to the visitor industry. But no issue divided the community more sharply, or led to a bigger backlash, than the County’s crackdown on transient vacation rentals. Mayor Charmaine Tavares’s decision to shut down TVRs, made shortly after she took office, was a shock to many and has proven to be a huge drag on the local economy. Even if you think TVRs need to be more heavily regulated, the answer isn’t to send the hammer crashing down, especially not now. This issue exemplifies the Mayor’s “plantation” mentality and lack of leadership, a deadly combo that has put the island on shaky ground. [JS]
Ah, the Superferry. Love it or hate it, everyone’s got an opinion. (For evidence of just how polarizing this issue is, see the runner up.) But after all the money, protests and legal wrangling, the only opinion that really mattered was that of the Hawaii Supreme Court, which ruled that Act 2— the special law that allowed the vessel to launch without a completed Environmental Impact Statement—was unconstitutional. That put the boat out of commission. But while the saga is over, at least for now, the motives that led the Superferry to be hurried into the water without a sound legal or financial plan—and the true cost of this boondoggle to taxpayers—remain murky. [JS]
Runner up: Lahaina Bypass
Runner up: Shutting down Hawaii Superferry
Just about anywhere you go, public transportation is an under-appreciated service. But for those who can remember what life was like before Maui had a county bus system, appreciation is in no short supply. Sure, there are always things to grumble about, but overall our buses are clean, reliable and pretty dang cheap when you consider what it costs to fill your tank. Finding examples of the government misusing taxpayer money is easy. Once in a while, it’s nice to be able to say: I’m glad I paid for that. [JS]

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE Water You know that slogan they’re always singing on the radio: “By water, all things find life”? It may be annoyingly catchy, but it’s also undeniably true. Without water, none of us would exist. It’s important to remember that, because it’s easy to take this precious life-giving elixir for granted. From pumping huge quantities of water to South Maui to turn desert into jungle to giving developers exemptions on water use restrictions to the fight over Native Hawaiian water rights, this is an issue with many facets (not to mention faucets). POLITICAL SCANDAL Wayne Nishiki’s Dowling loan OK, forgive us for a moment while we toot our own horn: the biggest political scandal of the year, as voted on by you, was broken in these pages. Now, for the uninitiated: Wayne Nishiki ran for the South Maui County Council seat as the independent candidate with no binding ties to the island’s big developers. He also accused his opponent, Don Couch, of being too developer-friendly. After the election, which Nishiki won narrowly, new information came to light: on a form filed well after the deadline, the Councilman revealed that he took a $100,000 personal loan from developer Everett Dowling while out of office. An ethics investigation was launched, but the results were never made public and Nishiki remains in office. It’ll be interesting to see, if Nishiki chooses to run for reelection, whether he’ll try to play the independent card again—and if the voters will buy it. [JS]

SCARIEST PUBLIC FIGURE Gov. Linda Lingle That Gov. Lingle (a former Maui County Councilmember and Mayor) is a frequent target of criticism in these pages is no secret. She just gives so much ammo: from the Superferry to work furloughs, Lingle is nothing if not a magnet for controversy. Clearly she has her supporters, but they seem to be in shorter supply these days, veto PR stunts notwithstanding. As we prepare to close the book on her eight-year reign, the Lingle Administration gets low marks for transparency and compromise, two essential qualities for effective leadership. Next year Hawaii will get a new governor; whoever that person is, they’ll inherit a state with a lot of issues, many of which can, and should, be pinned on Lingle. [JS]

MPD COP Officer Keith Taguma You haven’t really lived (on Maui at least) until you’ve been ticketed by Officer Taguma. As notorious as he is thorough, Taguma has an almost supernatural knack for being in the right (or wrong, depending on your perspective) place at the right time, fining drivers for everything from an expired safety inspection sticker to staying for 2 hours, 1 minute in a 2-hour space. We’ll leave his checkered past alone for now (if you’re interested, Google “Taguma v. Estrada”) and just say this is one cop who dives into his job with both boots. [JS]

Way to Kill Your Car The road to Hana, back way Nona, my van, hasn’t been quite right lately. First she overheated after about five minutes of being on.Then her master cylinder began to give. Now it’s the starter. I trace the ills that plague my $100 purchase back to that fateful day I decided to take the back way home from Hana. The road was bumpy, sketchy and decidedly uphill, which I realized once I passed Ulupalakua. So take heed. [KB]

Lahaina
If you like beaches and sunshine, this is your spot.Yes, many will complain about the tourists (though not as much these days) or say the town is just a long, hot strip of bars and condos (which is only sort of true). But come on, admit it, Kihei is a fun place to be. From the Triangle to always-lively games of beach volleyball, there’s no shortage of pleasing diversions, and with the BOM award-winning pool and all those awesome beaches, beating the heat is as easy as it is enjoyable. [JS]
Yes, trekking over to the West side can be a chore. But it’s one of those things where, once you do it, you’re never sorry you did. Front Street, with its wealth of shops and eateries, is the obvious draw. But even just sitting under the Banyan Tree watching the parade of humanity or using a trip to Maui’s historic whaling village as a jumping off point for the many proximal—and awesome—surfing, swimming and snorkeling spots is worth the trip. LOCAL FOOD Da Kitchen Whether it’s ono plate lunches, tasty desserts or just friendly, laid-back service, Da Kitchen continues to serve what locals crave. Their huge Hawaiian plate is amazing (chicken long rice, lau lau, kalua pork, lomi-lomi served with two scoops rice and mac salad), but their chicken katsu is king. It’s like a whole chicken has been artfully breaded in crispy panko flakes and served with a signature Japanese BBQ sauce. Local or tourist, Da Kitchen will leave you satiated. Islandwide. [YT]

FEMALE BARTENDER Sarah Stern (South Shore Tiki Lounge, Kihei) A well-placed spy tells me that not only is Sarah a friendly, efficient bartender who moonlights as a massage therapist, she’s easy on the eyes as well. BBQ Fat Daddy’s Smokehouse Vegetarians look away. There is nothing more carnivorous than tearing the tender meat from the rib of a fleshy cow or pig, but the experience gets even more primal with the addition of lots of dripping barbeque sauce. While I’m sure local islanders have come up with many fine ways to cook a pig, it’s the Texas-style barbeque from this Kihei smokehouse shack that holds top honors in this new food category. 1913 South Kihei Rd.j, Kihei, 808879-8711. This guy gets extra props from me due to the fact that he didn’t look at me with complete disdain when I spilled my water all over the place during a recent happy hour (at least my Maui Cruiser margarita was safe and sound). Obviously, to tend bar at a cantina like Milagros one’s margarita chops must be of the highest order. This is especially true if one’s place of work serves a large variety of supreme, jaw-droppingly expensive tequilas. In addition to concocting a mean margarita, Bauss is the epitome of Johnny-on-thespot. He makes his way around the bar—no matter how packed— like it’s nothing, and thus helps ensure return visits (OK, his dreamy eyes don’t hurt, either). [KB]

SEAFOOD Mama’s Fish House A lot of places assure you their fish is fresh, but Mama’s takes things a step further. On the menu, they tell you the name of the fisherman who caught your prospective dinner and where he caught it. Of course, that would be less important if the fish weren’t expertly prepared, but, of course, it is. For an almost-too-rich treat, try the mac nut crusted mahi mahi stuffed with lobster, crab and Maui onion (whew!). Or go with mango chutney garnished ono, or ginger-seared deep water ahi, or...well, you get the idea. 799 Poho Pl., Paia, 808-579-8488. [JS]

STEAK Ruth’s Chris Steak House If there is a perfect way to serve steak it probably goes a little like this: choose the most succulent cut of Midwestern beef you can get your hands on, cook it to order in an 1,800-degree broiler and then serve it atop a puddle of melted butter on a plate warmed to 500 degrees. As you’ve surely surmised, this is how Ruth’s Chris serves their meat. For just $39.95, diners can enjoy an 8-ounce filet mignon with salad, choice of side and dessert. 900 Front Street, Lahaina, 808-661-8815. [HN]
Paia Fish Market
In a time when struggling restaurants are closing their doors, it’s good to see the new Lulu’s packed with happy patrons. I guess they just hit on the right combination of atmosphere and grinds, because even in a location that practically repels tourists it’s still one of the busiest restaurants in Lahaina. The abundance of flat screen TVs around the room and the two pool tables in the back certainly don’t hurt, but the tasty food and kama‘aina deals are what really set them apart from the pack. 221 Honoapiilani Hwy. # A1, Lahaina, 808-661-0808. Some people gripe about the Fish Market’s picnic-table style seating—or, more to the point, that there’s not enough of it. But I like it: it lends itself to meeting new people and gives the place a backyard picnic vibe. As for the crowdedness? Well, that’s pretty much unavoidable given how damn good the food is. I’m partial to the fish and chips, to the point where I often ignore other options, but put the fish between sesame seed buns and garnish it with tarter sauce and other fixin’s and it’s still eat-every-biteand-look-around-for-more delicious. If you’re a fan of panini, dial up 808. They do nongrilled sandwiches too, and they’re plenty good, but you’d be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t try the “porkie”: pork, mango salsa and pepper jack on rye with sweet chili dipping sauce. Or the “roast beast,” a wallop of meat, cheese, jalepenos and horseradish. Or, for non-meat eaters, the “rippie,” a combo of two cheeses plus avocado, tomato and pesto. I could keep listing options, but how ’bout you just go look, and eat, for yourself? 2511 S. Kihei Rd., Suite 102, Kihei, 808-879-1111. [JS]

DINNER
This is the poet laureate of vegetarian restaurants. The menu at this Vietnamese joint includes some of the tastiest and wildly imaginative vegan items I have seen on this island, or anywhere else, truthfully. I have even tried the fake fish here, and found it to be most tasty. My favorite dish is the golden soy chicken curry, which features seitan and tofu as well as a variety of veggies. The Vietnamese burrito is also must-try. But whatever you select, you can’t really go wrong at this little veggie eatery—and vegans need not fear anything on the menu. Also, despite the seemingly rare ingredients, prices are surprisingly low. Another tab-shrinking factor is the fact that this place is BYOB. 115 Baldwin Ave., Paia, 808-579-9144. [KB]
There are some absolutely mouth watering delights at Moana Cafe, an eclectic bistro and bakery. I would venture to say some of the best lamb in the world is served here at dinner. Its called the lamb wahi wrap by day, and known as the rack of lamb at night. I also have to rave about the strudel that comes in either cherry or apple, it is fantastic. The atmosphere is old world and modern at the same time, and the food is always amazing. 71 Baldwin Ave., Paia, 808-579-9999. [JR]

Lahaina Grill A good restaurant serves good food, but to be the best restaurant on Maui it’s got to have a little something more. Lahaina Grill not only offers fresh fine dining with impeccable service in a relaxed atmosphere, it’s a place to turn to when you want to celebrate happy occasions—birthdays, graduations, anniversaries. In fact, this West side eatery is so popular for celebrations that staff members take and e-mail photos of your party, as well as send you a personalized birthday card each year. LUNCH Cafe Mambo
ACTUAL COOL CAT BURGER
It seems like eclecticism is the way to go if you’re shooting for Best of honors. Mambo is a case-in-point—the menu goes well beyond sandwiches and burgers. Yes, vegans like myself will dig the tofu-nori fajitas, the seven-vegetable tagine (morroccan stew) and the roasted vegetable salad. Carnivores can sink their teeth into steak and blue cheese, kalua duck fajitas and Tia Concha chicken tagine, to name a few. The atmosphere is decidedly sunny, a quality enhanced by the colorful artwork on the walls. Plus, any place that screens films like The Big Lebowski and Pan’s Labyrinth and has Maui Brewing Company beers on tap is worth checking out. 30 Baldwin Ave., Paia, 808-579-8021. [KB]

For the 7th year in a row, our readers declare that the best burrito on-island is at Maui Tacos. It’s easy to see why: the portions are generous—they stuff their burritos to capacity—plus each order comes with chips and a go at their extensive salsa bar, meaning you get your money’s worth. FISH TACOS Jawz Tacos I don’t think anyone will be surprised that Jawz took first place in this race once again. The tacos at Jawz are, quite simply, works of art, with all that fragrant cilantro rice, crunchy cabbage, shredded cheese and creamy salsa. And the options! With three kinds of fresh fish (mahi mahi, ono and ahi) and a salsa bar that just won’t quit, you could have Jawz tacos every day for a year and never taste the same thing twice. 1279 S. LOCAL ICE CREAM Roselani Tropics Ice Cream Local ice cream is important on Maui—as important as, say, coffee is up in Seattle or Botox is in Los Angeles. That’s because on a hot day we need the perfect scoop on the bottom of our shave ice to cool us down, and I’m so glad you readers picked Roselani, the company that has been operating locally for over 70 years and not some big box, Mainland chain store that has to ship their product halfway around the world to get it in your cone. The original haupia flavor is still the best. 918 Lower Main St., Wailuku, 808-244-7951. CORNED BEEF AND CABBAGE Dog & Duck Corned beef and cabbage is the dish of St. Patty’s Day. But why only eat it once a year? SMOOTHIE
PUPUS Mala Ocean Tavern This eclectic eatery has a starter menu that satiates on many fronts. Consider the unique twists they give items on their pupu menu: Pomegranate, ginger and chili accompany their chicken wings. Sugar snap peas are garnished with ginger, sambal and sesame. Seared ahi bruschetta comes with edamame puree. They even serve their hummus platter with flax seed lavash bread. The list goes on. Accompanying this globe-trotting pupu menu is their extensive cocktail list, which includes the ever refreshing mojito, Blue Moon on tap and a damned fine mango (yes, mango!) martini. 1307 Front St., Lahaina, 808-667-9394. BREAKFAST Kihei Caffe
Jamba Juice’s smiling servers and cheery, mostly health-minded smoothies are only a cover for something more insidious: a secret menu. Surely you’ve heard of Pink Starburst? What about White Gummy Bear or Strawberry Shortcake? Other than delicious smoothies, what else could Jamba Juice be hiding in its colorful recesses? Are they plotting to take over the world with wheatgrass shots (served with orange slices) and acai cups? Joking aside (or is it?), Jamba Juice serves yummy, customizable smoothies at reasonable prices. And don’t forget your free boost. Islandwide. [YT]
What’s amazing about Kihei Caffe is that, as crowded as it gets—and it gets crowded, especially on weekends—a table always seems to open up right when you need one. Sure, sometimes it’s one of the little wobbly ones and you’ve got to rub elbows with your dining companions, but you won’t be worrying about that as you wolf down a stack of banana mac nut pancakes or a gooey bite of hollandaise-slathered eggs Benedict. The proximity of Kihei’s many beaches means you can hop in the water (after waiting the requisite half-hour, of course) for a little post-breakfast float. Sounds like a Saturday to me. 1945 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei, 808-879-2230. [JS]

PLACE TO GET A PINATA WITH A MANDARIN JARRITO
MAI-TAI
Las Pinatas
Lahaina Mai Tai Lounge
Every holiday party we have at my house is really just an excuse to get a pinata. Gathering the folks around a hollow paper mache icon you hit with a stick blindfolded creates unforgettable family memories (and hopefully no serious injuries). There’s no better place to pick them up than Las Pinatas. Their entire ceiling is covered! While there, don’t resist the urge to suck back one of their Jarritos that come in exotic flavors like mandarin and tamarind. And the food’s good, too. 395 Dairy Rd., Kahului, 808-877-8707. [JR]
Mai-tais are hit-or-miss. If the person charged with concocting them is a quarter-teaspoon off with any ingredient, well, what you have here, boys, would be tantamount to cough syrup. If an ingredient is missing, you might as well have opted for seawater. Upon its incorporation, Mai-Tai Lounge made a damned bold statement by giving itself that name. And fortunately, it has worked out for them. Mai-tais here are served in these cool ceramic tiki mug dealies that add to the experience. And it’d be a crime to not mention the view from this rooftop eatery/drinkery (hint: you’re facing west). 839 Front St., Lahaina, 808-661-5288. [KB]
PANCAKES Tasty Crust Restaurant There’s no better way to start the day than with a plate full of piping hot, fluffy pancakes. And when you’ve got a busy day at the beach (why yes, tanning and bodyboarding are very stressful, thank you very much), the best way to fuel up is at Tasty Crust. When a diner has “tasty” in the name, you know you’re on the right track. If you need further proof of Tasty Crust’s superiority, look no further than their sign advertising their “world famous pancakes” (yes, world famous). Tasty Crust has served Maui for over 50 years, and in that half-century has learned something magical about delicious breakfast food, especially flapjacks. 1770 Mill St., Wailuku, 808-244-0845. [YT]

Cafe O’Lei When you have a hot business prospect or a make-or-break deal to close, Maui Time readers say head to Cafe O’Lei. I’ll bet it’s the quick and friendly service that won Cafe O’Lei second place in the Best Lunch category. But it’s the food that will impress your colleagues, and won’t break the mileage Visa, either. The daily fish specials—like the tasty macadamia nut crusted mahi or the seared ahi with wasabi cream served with Caesar salad—are a sure bet. 2439 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei, 808-891-1368. [JR]

HEALTH FOOD STORE Mana Foods Shopping at most natural food stores is not too different from spending the weekend in Waikiki, in that you might as well just turn your wallet upside down an pour its contents into the ocean. This is not so with Mana Foods. Numerous times, I have exited this mecca for the health conscious rather surprised at the comparatively low sum I had to fork over for my B complex, sprouted tofu and Molokai papayas. While price is a major factor in the place’s appeal, the variety they feature in all departments—especially produce and supplements—are also a draw. This is the only place on-island where you’ll find Indian dhoop, which are these tiny incense sticks that smell the way honey wishes it tasted—and at around 30 cents a box. 49 Baldwin Ave., Paia, 808-579-8078. If you’ve ever tasted the food at Jacques, you’ll agree that owner and executive Chef Pauvert is among the best on-island.To be Maui’s number one, a chef must be able to do more than just cook a good fish. Pauvert, a resident of Maui for more than 15 years and personal chef to the rich and famous, blends international and local cuisine with a deft hand and incorporates new, innovative flavors inspired by the diversity found on Maui’s windswept shores. He’s a lover of fresh local ingredients and big North Shore waves. And he not only cooks for Maui’s hardbodied windsurfer crowd, he surfs with them, too (and probably looks great with his shirt off!). 120 Hana Hwy., Paia, 808-579-8844. [JA]

HOTCAKES!
A Saigon Cafe
FOR 5 YEARS IN A ROW!
It’s easy to miss A Saigon Cafe. It doesn’t really advertise its location and is tucked under a busy bridge. But—with its yummy Vietnamese “burritos,” authentic, veggie-infused dishes and friendly staff—it’s worth seeking out. At Saigon, there’s something for everyone, be it the spring rolls, sweet and sour mahi mahi, crispy egg noodles, lemongrass chicken or hot clay pot dishes. If you’re tired of Vietnamese places that only serve pho, Saigon Cafe (and its extensive menu) is the place to go. 1792 Main St., Wailuku, 808-243-9560. [YT]
Runner up: Lemongrass Maui, Kahului
BURGER Cool Cat Cafe For six years in a row, Maui Time readers have overwhelmingly stated that Cool Cat dishes out the best burgers on-island. It’s no surprise these 6.5-ounce, hand-molded fresh beef patties win diners over. With 13 styles of burger to choose from—some topped with onion rings and barbecue sauce and others with bean chili and four cheeses—there’s something to suit all tastes. Plus: all kama‘aina get 20 percent off, all the time. 658 Front St. #160, Lahaina, 808-667-0908. [HN]

CHINESE
SPAM MUSUBI
Dragon Dragon
Minit Stop
LOCAL COFFEE HOUSE
Every special occasion, especially birthdays, finds me at Maui’s premiere Chinese restaurant. Why do birthdays have a special place in Dragon Dragon dining? According to some Asian customs, it’s good luck to eat long noodles on a birthday; it’s not scientific, but there’s supposed to be a correlation between a long life and long noodles. The fact that Dragon Dragon serves the birthday celebrant with lychee ice cream helps too. Anyway, if noodles aren’t your thing, Dragon Dragon also serves classic Chinese dishes like fried rice, kung pao chicken and occasionally dim sum on the weekends. 70 E. Kaahumanu Ave. # B12, Kahului, 808893-1628. [YT]
Minit Stop takes the prize yet again for the best Spam musubi on-island. With its balanced portion of rice, the width of the perfectly cooked spam and nori to keep it all snug, you’ve got one tasty treat. The best part is that Minit Stop locations can be found all over the island and open pretty late too, so you can snag this local favorite almost any time you work up an appetite. Islandwide. [CP]
Anthony’s Coffee Co.
Runner up: Fu Lin, Lahaina
In today’s fast-paced, caffeine-infused world, it’s hard to find a laid back place to enjoy your coffee. Too often, we’re greeted by blaring techno music and androgynous, hipster baristas yelling out mind-altering substances like “venti-mocha-zen-double-foamespresso-frappuccino,” that seem like they’ve never seen a coffee bean in their life. But not at Anthony’s. The atmosphere is welcoming, the service is friendly and the liquid they serve is definitely high quality. 90 Hana Hwy., Paia, 808-579-8340. [YT]

PLACE TO GET YOUR CHILE FIX
FISH AND CHIPS Alexander’s Fish & Chips “Fish” and chips might be a little misleading; Alexander’s serves an array of seafood (ono, mahi-mahi, shrimp and even oysters) dipped in tempura and fried to golden perfection. Their deep fryer even extends to land-dwelling delicacies such as zucchini, mushrooms and yams. If deep fried isn’t your thing, Alexander’s also offers to grill their items. 1913 S. Santa Fe Cantina This is the kind of place where you can have your chiles and eat them, too. I love chile—green, hot, mild, red, chipotle, all of them. At Santa Fe you can find an array of authentic, Southwestern-style dishes; I hear they use Mama’s old recipes. The chile relleno is awesome, especially with one of their margaritas. And Santa Fe offers a halfoff kama’aina night, so you and your wallet can both stay full. 900 Front St., Lahaina, 808-667-7805. [JR]

AUI WINNER BEST OF M 2 YEARS IN A ROW!
Roy’s You might think there are only so many ways to prepare fish, but Roy’s continues to surprise and amaze even the most avid seafood lovers. Perhaps Maui Time readers chose this restaurant as their favorite for upscale dining because Roy’s takes something as simple as Auntie’s tuna roll and turns it up a notch. The wine list is extensive and the entire meal ends on a high note with one of Roy’s to-die-for chocolate soufflés. 303 Piikea Ave., Building 1, Kihei, 808-891-1120. For fast, friendly service and delicious Japanese food, Maui Time readers say Tokyo Tei’s cute corner restaurant in Wailuku is the place to be. I always get one of their teishoku trays, which give you smaller portions of three entrees such as sashimi, pork tofu and fried fish. A glimpse at the rest of the menu reveals tonkatsu, tempura and donburi. Wondering about the side dishes? NOODLE SHOP Ramen-Ya Ramen-Ya serves gargantuan bowls of ramen, saimin and udon. Seriously, they should grant prizes to the brave few who can finish their big bowl, which is basically a huge plate of food served atop a massive bowl of ramen. LOCAL BOOZE/BEER/WINE Maui Brewing Co., Beer Maui Brewing Company’s dedication to sustainability and producing a truly local product has been well documented. So let’s focus on the beer: clearly, MBC is committed to honing the craft of beermaking, experimenting with different styles and techniques. You’ve seen the IPA, Bikini Blonde and Coconut Porter in the grocery store cooler, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg: confess your sins to the Father Damien Abbey Ale, a mix of fruit and malt flavors that packs a 9.6 percent alcohol punch; run through the Mana Wheat, a Belgian style brew augmented by fresh Maui pineapple; joust with the robust Dark Knight Lager—the list goes on. And if you still don’t know why they use cans instead of bottles, visit the Lahaina brewing facility and get the scoop. 4405 Honoapiilani Hwy. #217, Lahaina, 808-669-3474. [JS]

LOCAL PIZZA Flatbread Company I think, in general, Mauians are more adventurous than the Average Joe, and this proves it. SHAVE ICE Aloha Island Shaved Ice
ITALIAN FOOD Casanova Italian Restaurant and Deli Maui isn’t exactly bursting with Italian restaurants, but Casanova still totally deserves top honors. The food there has that special touch of authenticity, and while there may not be an old Italian grandmother in the kitchen pinching the fresh ravioli together, the food is fresh, delicious and reasonably priced. I just wish they would open one up on the West side to help me with my late night tiramisu cravings. 1188 Makawao Ave., Makawao, 808-572-0220. [JA]

If a shave ice joint has blue vanilla on the menu, I’m happy; there’s nothing better than a cold shave ice on a hot island, which additionally turns your tongue an unnatural shade of blue. For the discerning aficionado, they’ve got a plethora of flavors, including the classics like strawberry, watermelon and bubble gum, plus more exotic options like mango, lilikoi and guava. If you want adzuki beans or ice cream with your heaping mass of fluffy flavored ice, Aloha can cater to your needs. Just watch out for brain freeze. 77 Hana Hwy. Paia, 808-579-8747. [YT]

COUNTY PARK Kalama Park When I was young and impressionable, my parents told me that the big whale statue was a present that they got for me, but since it was so massive, we couldn’t bring it home. Now that I’m not so young—but still impressionable—sometimes I wonder why we haven’t brought it home yet. I mean, I made space for it in the backyard and everything. That bit of parental deceit aside, it’s hard not to enjoy Kalama Park in Kihei. There are grills galore, plenty of shade, a playground and even a sports field, which includes a skate park. It’s perfect for a family picnic. [YT]
Runner up: Baldwin Beach Park
TOURIST ACTIVITY Whale Watching There is really no way to prepare yourself for just how awesome whale watching is. It’s fun enough from the beach or some strategic lookout point, playing a kind of oceanic Where’s Waldo? as you look for those telltale white puffs. But go out in a boat and get close to the things and you’re truly awestruck. Not merely at their size—though they are indeed massive—but their agility and gracefulness. What you come away realizing is that there’s this whole world that exists beneath the ocean’s surface, one we’re lucky enough to catch occasional glimpses of but that we know very little about.Take a break from the sunbathing and mai-tais—both of which got votes here, by the way, along with, predictably “going home”—and marvel at Maui’s majestic annual visitors. [JS]

PUBLIC POOL
SNORKELING SPOT
Kihei Aquatic Center
Black Rock
Though Kihei’s very cool, very free pool carried the day (with its West side counterpart placing second), plenty of smart-ass readers logged votes for “the ocean.” We get where you’re coming from—that big, beautiful expanse of salt water is plenty inviting. But sometimes all the sand and tides and unpredictable waves are just a little too much. Plus, variety is the spice of life. Kihei Aquatic is great for serious lap swimmers (there’s almost always open lanes) but it’s also family friendly with it’s shallow kiddie pool and that big fountain that keeps the keiki wet and occupied during those long, hot South side summer afternoons. And hey—the ocean’s not going anywhere. 303 E. Lipoa St., Kihei, 874-8137. [JS]
I’ve been trying to figure out why you readers picked Black Rock as Maui’s numero uno snorkel spot, over places like Honolua Bay and Fish Bowl. Could it be because of the potential danger of getting crushed by an unobservant cliff jumper or getting whisked off to Lanai on a riptide? Or maybe it’s the humor of watching hoards of sunburned tourists trying to look cool while tripping down the beach with their fins on. But then I figured out the answer to this snorkeling conundrum: It’s got to be all that convenient parking, gear available for rent and the close proximity of tiki bars to rinse that salty taste away with pina coladas. That and the occasional sea turtle sighting. HIKE Bamboo Forest Choosing just one hike in a place as beautiful and diverse as Maui is tough, but truly, if you could take only one hike, this would be it. As you walk along the wooden footpath, towering bamboo gradually closes in around you. Soon, the light dims and you’re transported to another world, with the only sound the shuffle of your footsteps and the hypnotic creak of the giant green stalks that now blot out the sky. Just when you’re wondering how much thicker this stuff can grow, you emerge at the base of a towering waterfall. Are you reaching for your hiking boots yet? [JS]

UPHILL RUN Iao Valley This run’s appeal goes well beyond the astonishing scenery. It’s six miles roundtrip, and downhill the second half of the course. Plus it’s close to the office. The incline starts out gently and even slopes downward in a few spots, but soon it becomes apparent that you’re rapidly ascending. The valley’s lush green slopes flank both sides of the road at this point, and it feels a good five degrees cooler. The Iao River marks the final stretch of the trek’s uphill portion, and once you pass the Nature Center you’ve got just half a mile left before hitting Iao Needle State Park. [KB]
LOCALS’ BEACH Makena (Big Beach) I adore Big Beach, with its massive shore break and heaps of sand that always seems to find its way into my bikini, but the category of “locals’ beach” is difficult to define. Big Beach isn’t local exclusive (I meet way more tourists on Big Beach, than I do in, say, Wailuku). Even with that minor confusion, it cannot be denied that Big Beach is great. There’s sand, sun and surf—all requirements for an epic beach day. My favorite activity is skimming, but the bodyboarders are a force to be reckoned with. And on Sundays, if you’re brave enough, you can always trek over to Little Beach for fire dancing and nudity galore. [YT]

LOCAL AMATEUR SURFER Clay Marzo Marzo personifies a new wave of progressive surfing taking over the sport. His cat-like reflexes, elastic maneuverability and maniacal approach to a variety of surfing conditions have earned him recognition in lineups worldwide. Marzo leads a group of prodigies boosting beyond the classic days of cutbacks, off the lips and into the sky, pulling mind-boggling aerial maneuvers and landing tricks never before imagined. But Marzo’s prolific surfing is only one aspect of his unique character. Diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder, Marzo has proven to people far beyond the Valley Isle that a handicap can be overcome with undying dedication to something you love. LOCAL GROM Chaz Kinoshita It has been said that heredity is something you believe in when your child’s report card is all “A”s. When it comes to surfing, this quote fits for Matt Kinoshita, owner and shaper of Kazuma Surfboards, seasoned surfing coach and father of Chaz Kinoshita. In 2008, Chaz won the Hawaii Amateur Surfing Association’s state title in the menehune division, following in the footsteps of older Maui ripper and Kazuma protege, Kai Barger. On his blog, Matt Kinoshita explains, “Kai Barger is one of the most talented surfers that I have ever coached...I decided to train my son Chaz in the identical way.”With corporate sponsors and consistently high contest results, it’s clear that this year’s best local grom is taking his training seriously while also living up to his namesake. YOGA TEACHER Nadia Toraman I wonder if those who voted in this category experienced cognitive dissonance, given that namaste, a word commonly exchanged among yogic practitioners, means “the divine in me recognizes the divine in you,” or something along those lines. Basically, we are all merely sparks, miniscule pieces, of Brahma, and thus the same and, paradoxically, simultaneously unique; the equivalent of one another. But whatevs. Nadia Toraman launched Maui Yoga Shala studio in 1996 in Kuau, and continues to reprezent (yeah, I spelled that with a z) by way of Maui Yoga, a practice she developed using a blend of Ashtanga and Iyengar yoga. Plus she offers a kama‘aina rate, which is always appreciated. [KB]

(Many colleagues and students rushed to his defense after the suspension.) A respected and driven coach, Luuwai helmed King K’s paddling team for its first five years, from 2002 to 2006, and helped usher in and popularize the sport. In 2004, the team won a state mixed division title, the first time in the school’s history that it brought back a state trophy in a team sport. FEMALE MUSICIAN
Silky Ringo
Erin Smith
I don’t know if you know, but reggae-rock-Jawaiian is kind of a big deal here. Given this fact—a fact that a mere informal survey can overwhelmingly confirm—it’s no surprise that a band like this heavily Sublime-influenced reggae-rock outfit takes home top honors. They play regularly at Mulligan’s on the Wharf among other joints. [KB]
Smith has amassed quite a following in both her solo and collaborative musical endeavors, due in no small part to her steady gigging and the energy she exudes on stage. Whether it’s a solo acoustic set in a small barroom or an amped-up blowout with her band the Throwdowns, the Toronto native’s performances always seem to draw a sizable crowd, and always maintain a degree of grit that defies girly-girl rock stereotypes with a punch in the face. With the Throwdowns’ upcoming release (due out later this summer), you should expect to be hearing a lot more from Smith. [KB]

MANA‘O RADIO DJ
Runner up: Anuhea Jenkins
Kathy Collins Her voice unmistakable; a smoky alto on a clear day. But charismatic Mana’o Radio cofounder Kathy Collins is more than just a set of vocal cords. You’ll see her at all the choicest of Maui happenings, her petite frame and flowing hair swaying the night away on the dance floor. She plays a key role in bolstering the Valley Isle’s arts and entertainment scene as both a touchstone for top Isle musicians and artists and as an artist herself, which her autobiographical “Death Comedy Jam” performances demonstrate. It takes a lot of guts as well as spunk to live and breathe independent media, especially on Maui, and Collins pulls it off gracefully. [KB]
MALE MUSICIAN Willie K Having worked with the likes of Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt and Cecilio and Kapono while scooping up multiple Na Hoku Hanohano awards, Willie Kahaiali’i resides in that tier of Maui musicians whose accomplishments are louder than the actual music. But rest on his laurels he does not. With tons of gigs on-island, including an occasional appearance at the MACC, Kahaiali’i continues to be one of Maui’s hardest working musicians. In addition to his phenomenal guitar skills, he’s incredibly versatile as a musician, which leads to a unique, genre-spanning sound. [KB]

Maui Hands There is certainly a high proportion of art galleries on-island, and understandably so. But such a profusion may actually be quite paralyzing for those who want to check out, and possibly buy, a decent piece of art or two. A gallery must have a plan, a theme, a common thread to lure people in. With its four locations (Paia, Makawao, Lahina, Kaanapali) and a somewhat enigmatic name, Maui Hands doesn’t just display a few overpriced Mauiinspired landscapes. Instead, owner Panna Speas seeks to highlight the work of artists living on Maui. This makes for a sweeping collection of paintings, ceramics, jewelry and even hand cremes for your viewing and/or purchasing pleasure. BEACH FOR WRITING MUSIC Baldwin Beach I refuse to get all quasi-spiritual on you, but there is an unexplainable quality about Baldwin that makes it particularly conducive to acoustic guitars (and maybe a beer or two). Perhaps it’s the view. If you’re playing solo and don’t want to be bothered, you don’t have to worry about everyone and their mother walking up to you and attempting small talk (unless you’re one of those people who desires this very thing, in which case make eye contact). Media consolidation has done a number on many local media outlets’ ability to provide relevant, locally focused coverage. Radio is one arena in which this phenomenon is especially apparent. Not much was left in the wake of over a decade of entities like Clear Channel, which swallowed up hundreds of stations across the country. To be brutally honest, I am not sure if people are voting for the Web site itself or the actual band. But I’ll operate under the assumption that the former is the case. I have to agree that A Kettle Prime’s Web site is among the more userfriendly of local band sites. When I research a band ahead of a music review, their MySpace pages are typically loaded to the gills and thus often make my computer freeze. Which sucks. Since it’s not a MySpace profile, AKP’s Web site doesn’t do this, despite being packed with music and photo galleries—though you can’t download their tunes yet. In terms of aesthetics, their site seems to match the band’s sound, look, etc. [KB]

The name pretty much says it all, doesn’t it? You don’t have to love beer to enjoy this lighthearted-yet-informative show, but it sure helps. And judging by the feedback, it’s got plenty of support from the Aloha State’s suds-heads. Take this comment, from a recent episode done on-location at the Maui Brewers Festival: “Too good guys! Wish I was there. Just as well cause I surely would have ended up curled under a tree smelling like Arrogant Bastard.” Hey, we’ve all been there. Twobeerqueers.com. [JS]

As before, a group of offbeat creatures with celebrity voices roams through prehistoric landscapes and maintains a tight, unusual family unit. Ray Romano and Queen Latifah are an affectionate pair of Wooly mammoths, Denis Leary plays Diego the saber-toothed cat and John Leguizamo is Sid the sloth. The plot kicks off when Sid foolishly steals three large dinosaur eggs, declaring himself “a single mother,” while Latifah’s mammoth is ready to deliver a baby at any moment. A new character, Buck the one-eyed weasel, is a psychopath jungle guide voiced by Simon Pegg, whose contribution to this film is as richly funny as his work as Scotty in the new Star Trek film. The frequent appearances by Scrat—and his female nemesis, Scrat’e—are highlights once again. But the story this time is strong and engaging enough that you actually forget he’s in the movie, instead of looking at your watch and waiting for his next unfortunate battle with obsessive acorn lust. Many non-Pixar animated comedies allow pop culture gags to take over. This one

I believe the words you’re looking for are, ‘oh crap.’ never makes that mistake, though, given the title, we do get the inevitable conclusion of Was (Not Was)’s “Walk the Dinosaur” on the soundtrack, and lots of slime jokes that cater to the youngest in the audience. As in the previous entry, I wanted more of Leary’s Diego and less of Leguizamo’s Sid, a character who is best in small doses. I also didn’t care for Latifah declaring “Talk to the Trunk!”, a line too dumb to surface in a movie this clever. Romano has most of the best lines and whenever Buck or Scrat have center stage, the movie can do no wrong.
The action is exciting (see it in 3-D), particularly during one sequence that has, I’m not kidding, the best kissing scene of the year. There’s a thinly guised subtext about mixed families and how parenting is more about love and responsibility than being related or similar. It’s all gentle and heartfelt, but isn’t crammed down your throat. This isn’t on the level of Up in terms of sophistication or profundity, but it is a cheerful, sly comedy for the whole family. MTW

THE HANGOVER - R - Comedy - A bunch of dudes go to Vegas for a bachelor party and end up having to piece together what happened after they booze copiously. They’re already making a sequel to it. I’m not joking. 100 min.
CHECK BACK NEXT WEEK.
ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS - PG - Animation - The adorable creatures from this animated franchise carry on, only this time there are dinosaurs, which will probably mislead another generation of kids about the nature of the fossil record. 89 min.
New This Week BRUNO - R - Comedy - Clad in skin-tight mesh, Sacha Baron Cohen (‘Borat’, ‘Da Ali G Show’) makes red-blooded homophobes painfully uncomfortable and lampoons shallow celebrity culture in one delightfully fabulous swoop. 83 min.
IMAGINE THAT - PG - Family - Eddie Murphy portrays a financial executive who turns to his daughter’s dream world of magic as his career takes a nosedive. 97 min. LAND OF THE LOST - PG13 - Comedy - Will Ferrell plays a scientist who gets sucked into a vortex that spits him out in a land ruled by dinosaurs. Unfortunately it’s the Jurassic (judging by the T-rex) and not the Cretacious, when dinosaurs where smaller. 93 min. MY SISTER’S KEEPER - PG13 - Drama When faced with the death of their daughter via leukemia, a married couple makes a choice that raises ethical questions. With hilarious results. 109 min. NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM II - PG - Comedy - A Ben Stiller-induced security guard finds himself in yet another museum wherein a pharaoh’s curse makes stuff come to life at night. This time it’s the Smithsonian. It’s got Steve Coogan and Christopher Guest, among others, which is what confuses me. 105 min. THE PROPOSAL - PG13 - Romance - This is one of those romantic comedies that periodically gets pushed out. Sandra Bullock is a domineering executive who happens to be Canadian. She marries her assistant in order to stay in the U.S. Laughs presumably ensue (for some). 107 min. PUBLIC ENEMIES - R - Action - Johnny Depp stars as John Dillinger, who robbed the same banks that drove the U.S. into the Great Depression. Christian Bale stars as the FBI dude who was on his trail under the auspices of a cross-dressing J. Edgar Hoover. 100 min. STAR TREK - PG13 - Sci-Fi - This babe-fest is a prequel to the series of events we all know and love from the original flicks, with a few mind humps thrown in for good measure. Plus: Simon Pegg - whom we all know and love from ‘Shaun of the Dead’ - plays Scotty. I would go full nerd for Simon Pegg. 126 min.
Like Jesus, but more fabulous. CHERI - R - Art, Foreign - Set in 1920s Paris, this flick delves into the weird fantasy life led by a young rich dude who was forced to end his relationship with an older woman. 86 min. I LOVE YOU, BETH COOPER - PG13 Comedy - A nerd of the class valedictorian variety professes his love for the most popular chick in school during the graduation ceremony. A highly improbable series of events ensues. 102 min.
TERMINATOR: SALVATION - R - Action Hey, you know what cash cow action franchise hasn’t been revisited on the big screen in a while? Only this time it’s 2018. John Conner is all grown up and presumably dreamy. Humanity is on the brink of eradication. Conner leads the human resistance when a mysterious and presumably equally dream stranger shows up. Do the math. 115 min. TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN - PG13 - Art, Foreign - If there are two things I can’t get enough of, they are sequels and giant robots. THIS WEEK’S PICKS Beyond the whore
Here’s looking at uke, kid
Friday & Saturday (July 10 & 11), 7pm, Iao Theater, Wailuku Sunday (July 12), 2pm, Iao Theater
Friday (July 10), 9pm, Eha’s, Wailuku
Remember that one time when it was rumored that Jesus was planning the Second Coming for Maui? It was a few years back. He reportedly wanted try shave ice and check out some reggae, but postponed His visit as soon as He heard that Maui On Stage’s production of Hair featured naked people on stage. In a similar vein, the choreographer of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, which opens Friday, reportedly toned down some of the production’s already-PG13 dance routines for fear Maui audiences would find it too racy, a fear substantiated by some businesses’ reluctance to hang the production’s promo poster in their windows. (Good Lord! Are you kidding me, guys? What year is this?) Despite this, it looks to be a pretty killer show with a most excellent cast, including Paul Janes-Brown and Michael Pulliam. The plot revolves around a certain establishment that has been immortalized in the ZZ-Top song “La Grange.” Characters include politicians, football players and others who paid frequent visits to the establishment in its heyday. Runs through August 2. $20/$18 students and seniors/$15 under 18/$15 general admission on Sundays.
Remember that one time when I wouldn’t shut up about Kanekoa? Well, the universe has responded to my desperate pleas to revive the band and its uke-fueled jam stylings. With a new drummer in tow and up to speed, tonight’s gig kicks off a string of shows across the isle, which means that this band’s sizable following can exhume itself and make like it’s Dead tour. (But then again, maybe not, since unlike Dead tour, hanging out in parking lots would probably not be a good idea given the various anti-fun squads that comb this island with a vengeance, squads the county sees fit to fund with your money. Damn you, nepotism!). If you’ve never seen Vince Esquire on ukulele, then you are pretty much required to attend. With groovy originals and a list of brilliant cover choices, including “Peace Frog” and “Franklin’s Tower,” the modest dance floor at Eha’s will most certainly need some recovery time come this Saturday, roundabout 2am. Remember that one time when my appendix ruptured and it was so bad that that the surgeon had to do an exploratory laporatomy, which left a six-inch scar down the center of my lower abdomen? And how I used to tell everyone that it was a shark bite I received while boogie boarding? A surprising number of people actually believed me, but if you haven’t heard, let me be the first to tell you: you will never get bitten by a shark. Unless you have a seal-like physique and enjoy swimming in chum. That being said, this weekend has a killer two-birds-one-stone kind of event in store. It’s the Save Makena 2nd Annual Skim Board Contest, a chance to check out some of the best skimmers on island (or, if you’re one of them, compete with others of your ilk). It’s also a chance to learn about Save Makena and their efforts to stop developers from building in the area. Plus, you’ll be at the beach, so you can go for a swim…unless you’re afraid of sharks.
Have you ever been to a poolside event at sunset that wasn’t cool? Even if the multipurpose room of the Tavares Community Center at the Pukalani Pool isn’t the swanky venue you might be imagining, it’s free and sponsored by friends in high places (literally)! Thanks to the Friends of the Haleakala National Park (fhnp.org), Maui biologist Dr. Art Medeiros will present his “Endangerment of the Kumulipo” lecture next week at 7pm. Dive in with Medeiros’ review of the formation of the Hawaiian archipelago, “yielding the (planet’s) highest endemism,” and a discussion on land use history and current restoration efforts of Haleakala’s southern slopes. Plus, learn a little about the NP’s new Nu’u District—a 4,100-acre acquisition of an ahupua‘a extending from the crater rim to a half-mile of Kaupo shoreline. I’ll admit, as a Kula kid who’s frolicked and fished out there since “small kid times,” the topic does touch a tender spot of sentimentality in me—but the new opportunities for biological and cultural preservation are important to all. So, though this party will feature no DJ and require no dapper duds, the event still deserves a packed house. [Anu Yagi]

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
Being a good person—even a saintly one—doesn’t exempt you from unjust bullshit. Things happen to you regardless of whether you deserve them, or any notion of fairness. Someone who’s less obsessed with their own virtue might react to those events with a shrug, thinking, “It’s about time,” instead of, “It’s not fair.” Consequently they’d get through this crap with more speed and ease than you’ll likely experience, because you’re apt to squander a lot of time carping on the injustice of it all, and feeling sorry for yourself. Try not to do that. Shit just happens.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
Get those creative juices flowing. Lately, you’ve been doing a lot of crap that’s likely to constipate your inspiration and creativity, mind-dulling shit like work, drunken partying, or just zoning out in front of the tube. No wonder there hasn’t been much originality from you recently. Luckily, it’s easy enough to jumpstart your creative mind, and nothing so complicated as finding a muse, attending a workshop, or doing exotic drugs. It’s just making time and space—ideally by phasing out some of the shit that’s obstructing your creativity and replacing it with exactly nothing. Your busy imagination, if you’re patient enough, will do the rest.
Guess the exact amount in the KPOA Jackpot and you and your guest will Come-Along with us to Las Vegas courtesy of Vacations-Hawai‘i, Neighbor island connections courtesy of Go!. All winners will receive Come-Along gifts from Minit Stop and Coca-Cola. Visit KPOA.com for contest details
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
Yes, you performed an astonishing feat—but don’t fool yourself into thinking you pulled the sword from the stone. Before you dress up for your coronation or ticker tape parade, remember that things aren’t how they were back in good old King Arthur’s time. Your accomplishment, while amazing today, will probably be mostly forgotten tomorrow. Enjoy the gratitude, but if you want to maintain your rep as a minor miracle worker, be prepared to pull a new sword from a new stone tomorrow, and again the day after that, ad infinitum. Sorry, that’s just the way it works.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
Are you as bored with the lingering guilt you feel about a past mistake as I am? I wonder if you’re even consciously aware of all the things you do to cope with it or try to ignore it—but they’d become incredibly obvious if they were suddenly unnecessary. If you could rid yourself of the burden of remorse, you’d feel so light and free. I want that for you. This week’s an excellent time to shed the layers of accumulated regret you’ve worn so long they fit you like a second (and third, and fourth) skin. How to molt, though? It might be as simple as making amends, but it could also involve something more complicated. I have a feeling you already know what might do the trick. Go try it.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
I dreamt that trees were prisons for reincarnated souls serving time for mistakes made in previous lifetimes. They were designed to give these past-life criminals plenty of time to think, but also the chance to experience utter helplessness should anyone decide to brutally trim their branches, set them on fire, or cut them down. Hopefully you’ve done nothing so awful as to deserve such a fate, but I can’t help noticing how little effort you’ve been making to rectify the mistakes you have committed. You’re not a tree. You’ve got legs to walk, a mouth to talk, and hands to pick up and dial a phone. Use them while you’ve got them.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
What you’re up to now is about as effective as stuffing your mattress with cash to prepare for a bleak economic future. If you really want to set yourself up well, you invest in crap that’s likely to have value in a crashed economy; in the cash-stuffed-mattress future, dollar bills might best double as toilet paper. If you’re really interested in preparing for a worst-case (or best-case) scenario, you need to actually think about what that might look like, and prepare accordingly. You’ve been guessing instead of really thinking. Stop being lazily knee-jerk and start being smart.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Just saying no is no way to kick an addiction. Negatives (“Drugs are bad, mmkay?”) will never trump positives. If our oversized brains were indeed that powerful, no one would have trouble quitting smoking or anything else. In this case, we’re simple, pleasure-seeking creatures. If you really want to quit something, your best strategy is dumping so much positive stuff—namely, sources of tangible pleasure—on the other side of the scale, that this side just can’t compare. If by quitting smoking, for example, you get to have a hundred better things in your life—all of which would go away if you lit up—never picking up another cancer stick becomes a no-brainer.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
Giving up and throwing out all progress at the first real hitch is the sign of a foolish, spoiled child. While no one wants to beat their heads against something that is ultimately doomed to failure, not persisting a bit more than you have is quite simply a form of self-sabotage. It’s allowing your worst fears (“See, I told you it wouldn’t work!”) to control your reality, when in fact all that’s required is stubborn willpower. You have that, in spades, but you’ve been reluctant to exercise it. Some idiot (perhaps even me) convinced you it’s better to just “go with the flow.” No. Swim in the direction you know you want and need to go, even if it’s upstream the whole damn way.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
Your innate duality has already taught you the value of sometimes following (or even enforcing) rules, and occasionally bending or breaking them. Your flexibility is mostly more virtue than flaw, unless you take it to extremes. Unfortunately, you Fish can often be just that bit too accommodating and flexible, especially when someone with a forceful personality (or a stunning smile) gets involved. (You’re exceptionally screwed if someone who’s both bossy and sexy shows up.) In this case, the rules make sense. They’re worth heeding. Don’t let a pretty tyrant make you do something you shouldn’t. This isn’t about meekly obeying the rules just because they’re there. You’ve already demonstrated you have the guts to do your own thing when necessary. This is about doing what’s best for all concerned—and that means sticking to your guns and insisting that it’s all done by the book.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
You know a bad idea when you hear one—yet you sometimes get caught up in them anyway. Why is that? Is it a habit of ignoring your gut, low self-esteem, or simply a masochistic tendency to get yourself tangled up in messes you’ll need help getting out of (or getting over)? Some of your friends have seemingly infinite amounts of patience and forgiveness, but I wouldn’t count on that. Even though their supply appears inexhaustible, it does have limits, and you’re treading closer to them than you think. Heed your own instincts this week, and just keep yourself out of trouble.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
Squeezing in your passions between your supposed obligations is fine as a temporary measure, during some kind of crunch time. But as a general rule of thumb, it’s very poor. What’s the point? If you’re not going to make the things you deeply care about the main focus of your life—during at least some part of your week, anyway—how much can you really care about them? Your priorities are all screwed up, and they’re a lot easier to change up than you seem to think. Stop fooling yourself, and make the things (and people) you really care about occupy proportional chunks of your life, already.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
I hate people who brake at the end of a highway ramp. It’s so dumb and dangerous. Instead of using the ramp to accelerate and smoothly merge into traffic in a safe and intelligent way, they force themselves to have to go from zero to sixty in a matter of seconds. You know you may have to shift into high gear and proceed at top speed any time now—so don’t slow down and definitely don’t stop. Ideally, a light tap on the gas pedal should be enough to get you to the velocity you’ll need. If you have to floor it and pray, you’re doing something very wrong.
