Working with Dr. Kristi West, of the Marine Mammal Stranding Lab, UH Manoa, they collected muscle tissue samples from stranded calves. It soon became clear that exercise was likely a critical component of healthy calf development. Between birth and weaning at around 10 months, humpback calves gain up to 50 pounds a day, and may grow an inch every 24 hours. But they need time at rest and relax to reach these tremendous growth rates. Remember, every calf that makes it back to the feeding grounds adds another whale to our wild whale populations.
