Constantly showing yourself in areas you were allowed to enjoy only brings tourists, overcrowding, and trash to these islands. Wonder why there is an anti-tourism sentiment? WORKING WITH THE COMMUNITY TO PROTECT MAUI’S FUTURE

Our irreplaceable environment and culture –intertwined elements that make Maui unique – are both at risk. The rapid changes of the last two years have been so stark and so sudden that people are waking up and taking action.

Rick Sands and Anthony Ranken (left and middle) had been deeply involved with citizens group State Park At Mākena. Albert Perez (right) was a Maui County planner when he joined Rick and Anthony to form Maui Tomorrow in 1989. They are shown here celebrating the organization’s 30th anniversary at Oneloa (Big Beach).

Sponsored content by Maui Tomorrow Foundation

This map shows only a sampling of the important work Maui Tomorrow has done for our quality of life on Maui.

Every once in a while, Maui’s communities are presented with challenges that demand our best efforts to overcome them. Now, more than ever, overtourism and outside real estate demand are contributing to skyrocketing housing prices, and longtime local residents are being forced to leave.

Maui still has a chance, especially since our community is pulling together to turn this de sire for change into needed action. The required course correction has already begun. We need everyone on board to keep up the momentum.

Since 1989, Maui Tomorrow has been on the ground, working with the community, sounding the alarm and challenging the rubber-stamping of development projects that has resulted in unbri dled growth. Maui’s people have responded to that call, and have been working with Maui Tomorrow to protect what makes Maui no ka ‘oi. The efforts of this 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization have been aided by a widespread desire among the public to craft more resilient, sustainable solutions.

To learn more, to get involved, or to support Maui Tomorrow’s cam paigns with your donations, please visit www.maui-tomorrow.org.

· Build 5,000 truly affordable housing units,

Kalo growing at Hoaloha Farm in Waikapū. Regenerative agriculture works with nature to restore soil fertility, eliminate chemical pesticides and fertilizers, and reduce water needs.

Maui Tomorrow works closely with the Maui County Council, which has recently enacted an array of thoughtful legislation to:

· Address climate change.

· Protect cultural sites and open space, and

· Wean Maui County from overreliance on the visitor industry,

Maui Tomorrow needs your help to protect public trust waters, open spaces, and natural resources for all to enjoy. These are essential elements of our community’s quality of life. Your charitable donations to Maui To morrow will help to ensure that these concerns remain a priority and are tackled effectively.

WANT TO GET INVOLVED IN PROTECTING MAUI’S FUTURE?

Unfortunately, developer attempts to push through unwise projects con tinue. Maui Tomorrow has fought back against profiteers who wish to undermine the carefully considered community plans that Maui‘s people have worked so hard on.

· Support sustainable agriculture,

The organization’s team of dedicated advocates continues to empower the community by helping to make their voices heard, and promises to keep defend ing Maui’s future and encouraging citizen involvement every step of the way.
