All together now: ʻaʻako aku i ka hana!

There are many words for “work” in the Hawaiian language. “Hana” is the general term. “Hana lima” means to work with one’s hands. “Hana hihiu” is rare or unusual work. “Hoʻolaulima” means to work together. “Hana lohi” means to work slowly, while “hana ʻoʻoleʻa” is hard work. “ʻAʻako aku i ka hana” implores you to get going with the work. And “huli hana” means to look forThiswork.special Apply Within jobs issue—powered by MauiTimes—is dedicated to helping our readers with that last one. As we emerge from the pandemic and prepare for the arrival of tourist season, the island is covered with “help wanted” signs.

Everyone has to work to live (well, most of us anyway). But if you find the right job, you can also live to work (well, sometimes anyway).

Work can be fulfilling and rewarding; it can provide a sense of pride and purpose. Mostly, though, let’s be real: it keeps money in the bank, gas in the tank, and food in the fridge.

In these pages, we’ll highlight online resources that can connect you with the job you want, including a new state portal with an algorithm that makes it smarter as you search. We’ll show you how (and how not) to build a mod ern resumé. We’ll parse the realities of gig-economy side hustles and reveal the best-paying jobs for people of all education levels, from non-high school grads to folks with graduate degrees. And we’ll crunch some numbers on un employment, remote work, Maui’s most popular jobs, and more.

If you’re looking for work, you can find it. If you’re tired of your current position and want a new one, or are seeking a second or even third job, there are plenty of options to suit every experience level, interest, and skill set. Maui is hiring.

e’re often told that a good resumé is the key to landing a job interview. But if you haven’t been through the process lately, be aware that the rules of job hunting have changed over the past few years, and if you don’t get up to speed, your key may not fit the lock.

If you want to work at Cupie’s Drive-in, your uncle’s coffee shop, a food truck, or the corner store, you might not need a resumé at all. But if you’re applying at one of the hotel resorts or any other large company that relies on an HR de partment or a recruiter to screen applicants, pay attention because the rules are different now. Gone are the days when you could just add the latest job you’ve held to the top of the resumé you started 20 years ago.

If you miss the old days of pick ing out fancy resumé paper and seeing it in print, don’t worry. It’s always a good idea to bring a copy or two to the interview. Here’s your chance to get a little bit cre ative. But before you start select ing paper stock and fancy fonts, you might want to spruce up your LinkedIn profile a bit, making sure that it’s current and relates to the job opening. And while you’re at it, you should probably delete that awful comment you made on social media last week and those drunken party pics you posted on Instagram. It’s also a good idea to have a current, profession al-sounding email address, rather than surfstoned@aol.com.

In the second paragraph, tell how your experience has prepared you for the position and what valuable skills and expertise you bring with you—perhaps even some that weren’t included on your resumé.

Lastly, summarize your skills and reiterate your objective, ending on a positive note with a call to action (ie., “Please call me to discuss this opportunity,” or “If you’re interested in meeting with me, I’d love to chat.”). A Word About Cover Letters

POWERED BY 9

If the resumé is the ticket to a job interview, the cover letter may be the ticket to getting your resumé read. Keep it short, to the point, and focused on your objective. While this is a chance to reveal a bit of personality and share something about yourself aside from your skill set, you’re not writing an autobiography. Use the same format and font (preferably not Comic Sans) that you used on your resumé, for consistency. But if you’re delivering hard copies, don’t fold them or staple them together. A large manila envelope is likely to get more attention than a standard-size one with a resumé folded up inside.

Again, your contact information goes up top. Then the date, followed by the hiring manager’s (or company) name and address, and a salutation (ie., “Dear Ms. Finch,” “Human Resources Dept.,” or “To Whom it May Concern”).

n June, state officials unveiled the Hawaiʻi Career Accel eration Navigator. Gov. David Ige touted it as “a first-ofits-kind data platform to connect job seekers to careers in our post-pandemic economy.”

In an era when government often seems like a source of in transigence rather than solutions, this is an actual leap forward.

From there, you select from career paths, specific job open ings, and training opportunities, and give a thumbs-up or thumbs down to various options to make the algorithm smart er and more specific.

State creates web-based solution for job seekers…and it actually works!

“We are unlocking state data and technology to match and develop worker skills to meet industry needs,” said state De partment of Labor and Industrial Relations Director Anne Per reira-Eustaquio. “At the same time, eligible users can get help without sifting through dozens of government links that can lead to confusion and frustration. COVID has been hard, so we are centralizing services and putting people’s data to work to make bouncing back from it easier.”

The Hawai‘i Career Acceleration Navigator: A Portal to Work

Sounds good, but how does it work? Pretty well, actually.

First off, it’s more than a list of posted jobs. You’re required to enter your legal name, date of birth, and Social Security number. After that, you post your resumé or enter your infor mation manually, including education, field(s) of interest, and recent work experience.

Then, the portal—which utilizes state data and cloud tech nology from Amazon and Geographic Solutions—sifts through the employment stew to find the open positions you’re best-suited for.

A sign hung on the front of the desk reads, “Poems about anyone or anything.” It’s early eve ning and visitors to the artsy beach town are milling about, waiting for tables and peering through shop windows. Keys smiles as they pass by, and occasionally some folks stop and inquire about his ser vices. A mere $20 will buy you an entirely original work of poetry on the topic of your choice, created on the spot.

Some landowners will actual ly pay you to take them. You’ll need a coconut tree climbing device that won’t scar the trunks. And you need to know what stage they are in. Tourists want young coconuts with lots of fresh coconut water and a little bit of soft meat and they’ll pay about $10 apiece. Part of the experience is watching the ven dor risk losing fingers hacking the nut open with a machete, so first, hone your skills.

As home rental rates climb ever higher and essentials like gaso line and groceries fetch record prices in Maui County, even folks with full-time jobs often have to rely on extra income from side gigs to make ends meet. Some fill obvious needs, like gardening, house cleaning, or dog walking. Others rely on the growing array of smartphone apps that provide access to the gig economy. Let’s look at some ways to make an ex tra buck on the side.

Auto detailing is tedious work, but can make a big difference in how much a used car is worth, or how well passengers review their Turo rental or Uber ride. Users of the Turo app are constantly picking up, cleaning out, and de livering cars. Some would surely appreciate some help from time to time. So, if you don’t mind dig ging out moldy French fries from beneath car seats and scrubbing gum out of carpet with a tooth brush, polishing up other people’s rides can be a lucrative sideline. Lei making for weddings, events While it may lead to accusations of cultural appropriation, lei-mak ing in Hawaiʻi is big business, and those with the skills to create traditional leis from plumeria blossoms, ti leaves, ferns, or aʻaliʻi seeds can earn a nice chunk of cash supplying just one wedding or graduation ceremony. Materials are essentially free, if you know where to collect them. In addition to those worn around the neck, there are haka leis, worn like a crown, kupeʻe, worn on wrists or ankles, and even money leis, made from folded dollar bills.

Here’s a need so obvious and so universal that several developers have come up with competing apps. There are more than a dozen with similar features, but the top two in terms of number of users are Rover and Wag! All of them include secure payments and some offer insurance, training, certification, or other perks. Dog owners like the apps because they can track their pets’ location and activity. Walkers must pass a crim inal background check and share the fees with the app. A half-hour walk generally costs $15-20.
