Liberals didn’t much care for military superiority arguments, but even they backed off when faced with the government buying huge quantities of nuclear and conventional weapons (tanks, planes, ships, missiles, etc.). That meant a large segment of the American population were working very good jobs for defense contractors. In 1990, Secretary of State James Baker even tried to use “jobs” as a reason to liberate Kuwait after the Iraqi invasion that summer. In this particular case, of course it’s sad to see even more locals out of work. But to borrow a tired argument from those who oppose banning smoking in restaurants and bars, no one forced them to go work for an industry that, even when all permits and papers are in order, is highly cyclical. It’s also hard to feel a lot of sympathy towards either Goodfellow boss Steve Goodfellow or Honua‘ula Partners representative Charlie Jencks–in 2005, both men testified for their pal Everett Dowling’s state legislation that would have eviscerated funding for Akaku, Maui’s public access TV station (Dowling opposed the station because of its airing of hearings in which people opposed to his development projects often spoke). But hey, all this is going to be academic soon. The LUC didn’t kill the proposed mega malls, and will take up the matter again in a month or two. In fact, there’s a great prob-

So I guess it was only a matter of time before the old “jobs” debate got started in the fight over the proposed Kihei “mega malls.” Earlier this month, the State Land Use Commission (SLUC) voted that the plan put forth by Eclipse Development Group and Honua‘ula Partners for 700,000 square feet of retail and 250 affordable homes, respectively, in North Kihei violated various conditions imposed on the property back in 1995. I still can’t believe it took four days before Pacific Business News reported that Goodfellow Brothers, which was slated to start construction on the malls, was not taking the SLUC decision well. “Goodfellow Bros. is laying off about 100 people after a Maui mega-mall proposal was shot down by the Hawaii Land Use Commission late last week,” PBN reported on Feb. 11. “Goodfellow has a total workforce of between 250 and 300, some of whom have been with the company for more than three decades. The 100 people that will be out of a job are mostly operational engineers, laborers and other field workers.” On Feb. 16, The Maui News published a story saying Eclipse President and CEO Douglas Gray agreed with Goodfellow. “I am disappointed at the decision of the SLUC and saddened at the impact on the jobs of workers who were slated to begin the grading and infrastructure work for the project,” Gray said, according to the paper. “It is my hope that we can quickly come to a resolution that will put people back to work and create up to 1,800 jobs when the promenade [the retail complex] is completed.” The underlying point was clear: meddling environmentalists who had petitioned the LUC to stop the mega mall project because it bore no resemblance to the “light industrial” zoning given the land back in 1995 were putting a lot of locals out of a job. We forget sometimes that, in America, “jobs” is often given as the reason we do everything. During the cold war, Washington loved to wave the jobs hammer around during

Looks like the fate of the hated Public Lands Development Corporation (PLDC), which was quietly passed and signed into law back in 2011, is just about complete. On Tuesday, Feb. 19, the Senate "without comment" (according to the Associated Press) unanimously voted to kill the hated PLDC. This comes after the state House voted unanimously on Feb. 14 for HB1133, which would kill the PLDC, after which Honolulu Civil Beat reported that House Speaker Joe Souki called the whole creation of the PLDC a “mistake.” Of course, there still has to be reconciliation between both bills, and then Gov. Neil Abercrombie has to sign the thing, but given the enormous public opposition to state officials simply selling off public lands regardless of local zoning, I think passage is a safe bet.

the front page of the Feb. 14 Maui News, I thought the paper had veered into The Onion’s satirical territory: “House Rep. James Kunane Tokioka, who represents residents of southeastern Kauai, introduced House Bill 293,” reported the News. “It calls for establishing and designating Flavobacterium akiainvivens as the official microbe of the state.” Like most people, I guess I thought Hawaii already had an official microbe. Because, well, legislators have nothing better to do on the public dime, right, except pass a bunch of toothless resolutions and hold self-serving hearings and so forth. I was wrong! In fact, while Hawaii does in fact have a State Bird (Nene), State Marine Mammal (humpback whale), State Reptile (Gold Dust Day Gecko) and State Individual Sport (surfing), it lacks a whole bunch of other symbols that should be official. Since we had five free minutes this morning, the MauiTime staff came up with a few suggestions that ought to be on the books:

CRAZY KIDS An estimated 3.2 million kids aged five to 12 take mixed-martial arts classes, training to administer beatdowns modeled after the adults’ Ultimate Fighting Championships, according to a January report in ESPN magazine, which profiled the swaggering, Mohawked Derek “Crazy” Rayfield, 11, and the meek, doll-clutching fighting machine, Regina “The Black Widow” Awana, seven. Kids under age 12 fight each other without regard to gender, and blows above the collarbone are always prohibited (along with attacks on the groin, kidneys and back). “Crazy” was described delivering merciless forearm chest smashes to a foe before the referee intervened, and the Black Widow won her match in less than a minute via arm-bar submission. Parental involvement appears to be of two types: either fear of their child’s getting hurt or encouragement to be meaner.

BREAKING BAD (AND QUICKLY!) Tyrone Harris, 26, reported for his first shift at Dunkin’ Donuts in Morristown, N.J., in January and received his name tag. Seven minutes later, according to police, he was on his way out the door with $2,100 from his supervisor’s desk. Apparently, the supervisor had opened his drawer a little too far when reaching for the name tag, giving Harris a glimpse of the cash.

FAMILY TIES Aubrey Ireland, 21, a dean’s-list senior at the University of Cincinnati’s prestigious college of music, went to court in December to protect herself from two stalkers–her mother and father, who, she said, had been paranoiacally meddling in her life. David and Julie Ireland put tracking devices on Aubrey’s computer and telephone and showed up unannounced on campus (600 miles from their home), telling officials that Aubrey was promiscuous and mentally imbalanced. A Common Pleas Court judge ordered the parents to keep their distance.

MEDIUM-TECH WARFARE The mostly rag-tag army of Syrian rebels fighting the Assad regime unveiled its first jerry-built armored vehicle in December. The “Sham II” is an old diesel car with cameras for navigation, a machine gun mounted on a turret with a driver looking at one flat-screen TV and a gunner another, aiming the machine gun via a Sony PlayStation controller. And video transmissions from drone aircraft rose stiflingly to more than 300,000 hours last year (compared to 4,800 in 2001). With input expected to grow even more, Air Force officials acknowledged in December seeking advice from a privatesector company experienced in handling massive amounts of video: ESPN.

THIS WEEK IN DOGS THAT DRIVE Dog trainer Mark Vette showed off his best work in Auckland, New Zealand, in December: dogs driving a Cooper Mini on a closed course. Using knobs fitted to the dogs’ reach, Vette taught mixedbreed rescue dogs “Monty” and “Porter” 10 discrete actions, including handling the starter, steering wheel, gear shift, and brake and gas pedals, and then put them behind the wheel on live television. Monty handled the straightaway flawlessly, but Porter, assigned to steer around a bend, ran off the road.

BRIGHT IDEAS Jorge Sanchez, 35, was arrested in Burbank, Calif., in February after walking into a Costco, brazenly stuffing 24 quart cans of motor oil under his clothing (some affixed with bungee cords), and heading for the exit. A security guard noticed him, but Sanchez fled and actually outran the guard (though some of his cargo came loose). Still carrying 15 cans, he made it eight blocks before police overtook him. Sanchez said he services cars part-time and that motor oil prices were just too high.

THE ARISTOCRATS! Gregory Bruni, 21, was arrested in North Fort Myers, Fla., in January after allegedly breaking into a residence at about 7pm (first scurrying across the roof and jumping on one resident who came to investigate). According to police, Bruni was naked, ran maniacally around screaming in gibberish, failed to be intimidated when the female resident fired three “warning shots” with a handgun, fell to the floor after the third shot and began masturbating, and defecated near the front door and in a hallway. Police soon arrived and Tasered him.

PERSPECTIVE The issue of “background checks” for gun purchases occupies center stage in the current gun-regulation debate, even though, ironically, current federal law on such checks is apparently half-heartedly enforced. In the latest data available (from 2010), nearly 80,000 Americans were denied the right to purchase guns because their applications contained false information (even though applicants swear, under penalty of law, that all information is true). t was love at first sight when Brittany and James met. It was also their first day of college at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. “We were being introduced to lots of people on that day,” says Brittany. “Right away we had a connection.” They dated for about eight and a half years before James got down on one knee. He asked her to marry him right in the middle of the town square, as the clock struck midnight on New Years Eve. They both knew immediately the wedding would be in Maui. “Our love of the island is one of our biggest connections as a couple,” says Brittany. They decided on a tropical-inspired wedding at a private plantation home in Lahaina. There, the whole family could stay and they could do their

intimate ceremony and four-table reception in the backyard that was right on the beach. Old Lahaina Luau catered the wedding with Hawaiian food and a lilikoi wedding cake. The couple also hired a fire dancer as a surprise for their guests. The bride wore a vintage inspired cap sleeve gown with a keyhole back from David’s Bridal, while the groom wore a Tommy Bahama linen shirt with slacks and slippers. The bride cruised down the aisle while everyone listened to Bruddah Iz playing on uke. Later Barefoot Minded played. “We love Old Lahaina Luau so we had them cater the reception,” says Brittany. “They had really great prices and even for the smallest buffet the amount of food was ridiculous. More options than could fit on my plate. I heard people say it was the best food they had at a wedding.”

he pediatric ICU is not the most romantic place in the world but that’s where sparks flew for pediatric resident Jane and pediatric neurosurgeon intern William. Their physician’s studies and practice barely left time for romance but they certainly did not let that stand in their way. While working at the hospital over common patients in the ICU, romance blossomed and Will decided to find the perfect birthday surprise for Jane. In a moment of impulse he bought tickets to Maui and found a great six-day stay at the Westin Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas. He convinced colleagues to help with the plan, even going so far as to create a phony list of appointments when they had cleared Jane’s schedule of patients. “The only thing left was to talk to Tom Florin from the Westin, and he helped me plan the perfect evening and proposal on the beach,” says Will. “We had a private dining table set up overlooking the beach at sunset, and I got down on one knee. I think at that point she kind of figured out that something was going to happen.” The couple was ecstatic about each other but that didn’t make the engagement easy. Jane had originally made plans to move to Korea when she graduated as a pediatrician, and Will still had his neurosurgery residency ahead of him. “It was complicated,” says Will. “We got off to a rocky start. I had to convince her to stay with me in the states. I wouldn’t say our romance was stormy, but it definitely turned her well laidout plans for the future completely upside down.” They decided to return to Maui for their small wedding, which was themed in pink and purple, Jane’s two favorite colors. The tied the knot along the beach boardwalk at Ka‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas with traditional vows. Officiant Keli‘i Arruda began the ceremony with a blow of his conch and a Hawaiian oli. The bride walked down the aisle while Kalani Smythe strummed “Morning Dew” on the ukulele. “Since we were all staying at the Westin we didn’t have

anywhere to escape after the ceremony, but I knew Jane really wanted to drive away in a limo after the wedding,” says Will. “So afterwards I surprised her with a big party bus for us and the whole bridal party for a quick cruise along the Honoapi‘ilani Highway, complete with Dom Perignon and a DJ. With antique and vintage wedding themes all the rage, getting married in a historic building with natural Hawaiian botanical gardens is as authentic as you can get. There’s no minimum number of guests but you’re maxed out here at 100. Also, the place has to quiet down at 10pm as it’s in a residential neighborhood. There is parking on the premises and some of the street. Museum members receive extra discounts. Rental pricing starts at $175/hour.

The Bailey House was built in 1833, the first Western style structure of its kind in the Iao area. Soaking up the displays and history of the buildings as well as the beautiful art and artifacts is a bonus. They also have a hall that can be rented. The gardens are amazing and the lawn has a built-in rock-wall and grass stage. You bring your own entertainment and catering.

The beautiful north side of Keka‘a Point offers the tropical and serene grounds of the Royal Lahaina. It’s the quieter side of Kaanapali, but with all the benefits of a big resort. Parking is no problem on the property and room rates start at a reasonable $155 for wedding parties, with available upgrades for the wedding couple. Royal Lahaina has an ocean-view ballroom and outdoor locations that are right on the beach in Ka‘anapali. They also offer incentives for kama‘aina.

The resort has a wedding department that offers great packages. They dial in details from leis to exchange, flowers, marriage license, canopy, music, professional photography, champagne toasts, wedding cakes and DJs. These range from $2,200 to $10,000, depending on the size of the party and amenities chosen, and you can add food and drink as well.

The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua takes full advantage of its rustic Westside location with no less than five scenic ceremony locations. The lava outcropping offers nature’s drama, while the Napili Lawn shows off the vista of Kapalua’s cliffs and Honolua Bay. For more traditional spots venture to the historic Honolua Chapel or and the nearby gazebo. There’s also the Beach House Lawn that overlooks DT Fleming Beach Kama‘aina are offered their Tradewind package at $5,300, a $1,000 savings.

Every wedding here is assigned a personal wedding manager. Want to do a hula lesson for your bridal party? Did you forget the leis? Did you want a bagpiper or a Japanese koto player? There’s no request too big or small. Weather can be a concern in the area, so every wedding has a contingency plan with staff standing by to make it a smooth transition. If you want authentic Hawaiian touches you can tap into their full-time cultural advisor to help with details.

The resort lies in Makena and sports a unique 16th fairway location on manicured lawns, a mountain vista spot with panoramic views, an atrium and koi ponds. Kama‘aina are offered 20 percent off discounts on all wedding menu items.

The culinary team is game to customize all food choices to your theme. Ranch-style weddings or other themes like Prohibition and the Roaring Twenties all can be very creative when thinking about food and drink options. The largest outdoor area can fit up to 3,000 guests.

The Wailea Seaside Chapel was built on the property for weddings. It has New England architecture, Murano glass chandeliers, hand-crafted stained glass windows from local artist Yvonne Cheng and mahogany floors. A lagoon surrounds the chapel and a beautiful gazebo overlooks the ocean. Butterflies and doves are just a call away Their wedding team can create any theme you desire, and aren’t afraid to bring in items from elsewhere if they can’t find them locally. Outdoor parties can go until 10:30pm, but if you’re in their spacious ballroom you can party till 2am.

The Sheraton boasts 23 acres of prime Ka‘anapali beach front at Keka‘a Point . They have six special wedding locations, which range from the sea cliffs atop Black Rock to their hoku rotunda. Menus and packages are full-service from license to cake and they have an on-staff wedding manager to help. Wedding packages vary, but all include ceremony location. Some even cover wedding night stays, or bridal get-ready rooms. There’s also plenty of self-parking.

Banquet menus are offered to kama‘aina at $60 per person for 50-plus guests. The spa has a wedding showroom to demo available decor, centerpieces, photography, linens, chairs and more. They even make rehearsal dinners and receptions easy, with pre-packaged options for parties in their restaurants with set menus.

Ka‘anapali’s most Hawaiian hotel does much more than just Hawaiian weddings. A recent Latin-themed wedding featured bright chair covers, pineapple drinks, ceviche and chips, Bird of Paradise centerpieces and a live band. Kama‘aina are offered discounts on their venue fees, and ceremony packages start at $1,575.

Wedding coordination is offered with your reservations at no extra charge. They can also schedule rehearsal dinners, wedding showers, private dinner parties and receptions at Sunday champagne brunch. The Maui Romance package at $6,035 includes rooms.

In 1989, they joined forces with Epitaph Records and released a string of skate-punk albums. SOURCE – For the sixth year, Camp Keanae will transform into Maui’s biggest multimedia arts festival. Known as SOURCE, it runs Feb. 22-25. This year’s theme is “Imaginarium,” which means attendees will find interactive art through touch, hearing, as well as visually. Live bands, DJs, producers and art exhibitions from all over the world are scheduled to appear while impromptu jams and parades are common. A variety of healing arts are present at SOURCE each year, generally offered through the WombRoom. Franklin, described as the “Adult Show and Tell,” could also be described as the SOURCE version of TEDx (Saturday at 2pm). WEDNESDAY, FEB. 27 SEEDS OF HOPE – Na Kupu Mana ‘Olana (Seeds of Hope) tells the story of Hawaii’s return to local and traditional methods of growing food in the midst of growing food insecurity. “For over 1,000 years, the Hawaiian people produced enough food to support an estimated population of one million,” states the filmmakers. “Today, 85 percent of our food is imported. If current trends continue, Hawaii’s last agricultural lands will be gone by 2040.” The film includes interviews with more than 50 farmers, ranchers, scientists and educators who provide a wealth of information about Hawaii’s agricultural history while providing an inspiring vision for our future. $10. 3pm. We Predict The Oscar Winners! BY BARRY WURST II

t’s time once again for the Academy Awards. If you’re having an Oscar party (Sunday, Feb. 24–check local listings) or making bets on this year’s winners, here’s my personal picks for the top five categories.

BEST PICTURE Who Should Win: Zero Dark Thirty, the best film in this category, has become too controversial a topic for Academy members. It will have to settle for classic status and ongoing debate for years to come. Who Will Win: The over-praised Lincoln has a real shot, as does Argo. However, the film that gained the most momentum, in terms of audience favor and in the awards circuit, is Silver Linings Playbook, which will likely surprise everyone with a Best Picture statuette. BEST DIRECTOR Who Should Win: Everyone expected Kathryn Bigelow of Zero Dark Thirty and Ben Affleck of Argo to be nominated; their being snubbed hurt the chances of either film winning Best Picture (since the director for the film voted the year’s best is usually the winner). Who Will Win: David O’Russell, the respected, acclaimed filmmaker of Silver Linings Playbook.

BEST ACTOR Who Should Win: Joaquin Phoenix’s frighteningly raw performance in The Master was the actor comeback of the year, but few saw the film and even fewer liked it. Who Will Win: Denzel Washington’s bravely unsympathetic, triumphant performance in Flight would be a front runner in any other year, but the award will definitely go to Daniel Day-Lewis. His portrait of Lincoln was, in a word, amazing. BEST ACTRESS Who Should Win: Jessica Chastain’s starring role as Maya in Zero Dark Thirty was her finest work yet. She is one of the reasons the film continues to be a source of discussion, as we see the story through her eyes but her character Maya, like the film itself, isn’t telling us how we’re supposed to feel about the horrors she witnesses. That’s up to us. Who Will Win: 2012 was the year of Jennifer Lawrence, who added emotional luster to the hype machine of The Hunger Games and revealed surprising layers in her Oscar nominated turn in Silver Linings Playbook. By the time the second Hunger Games arrives in

November, she’ll likely be billed as the “Academy Award Winner Jennifer Lawrence.” BEST SUPPORTING Best Picture? ACTOR Who Should Win: All the nominees here have won once already, with Christoph Waltz and Alan Arkin being the most recent winners. Philip Seymour Hoffman’s remarkably textured, disturbing portrait of an on-edge cult leader in The Master was one of the show stopping turns of the year. Who Will Win: Tommy Lee Jones stole much of Lincoln but who in Hollywood doesn’t love Robert De Niro? The three time Oscar winner hasn’t won since Raging Bull in 1980 and his tremendously moving portrait of an OCD dad in Silver Linings Playbook is one of his best roles in years. BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS Who Should Win: The Master showcased three of the year’s finest performances. Amy Adams’ frightening depiction as Hoffman’s seemingly pleasant but controlling and venomous wife had an intensity that more than matched her co-stars.

Who Will Win: Despite appearing in very little of Les Miserables, Anne Hathaway’s haunting performance, the best thing in the film, is the soul of the story. BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY Who Should Win: The adorable, brilliantly made Moonrise Kingdom deserves to win for its loopy, dream-like story and unique take on adolescent puppy love gone astray. Who Will Win: Since they won’t have the guts to award it Best Picture, the Academy will likely grant Zero Dark Thirty an Oscar for its meticulously crafted screenplay. Expect plenty of boos (some likely from Martin Sheen) when screenwriter Mark Boal claims his prize. Please don’t blame me if you use my predictions and lose 20 bucks. Others require more before they’ll sprout: fires, floods, extremely specific temperatures, the right type of soil, etc. So far you’ve been casually scattering seeds left and right, but unless you take some time to at least water (and maybe fertilize) the ones you really care about, your life will soon be overrun with weeds and not much else.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) While you’ve rarely been so eloquent expressing your emotions, you’ve also rarely been so conflicted. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your perspective, the universe is so primed to deliver your desire that it might fixate on the most random of comments. So you don’t end up with a joke of a cosmic present, spend this week figuring out what it is you really want more than anything else. Then ask for it.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) This week, impetuous romance is in; heartfelt emotional processing is out. I can’t really tell you what to do (it’d hardly be spontaneous then, would it?) but I can tell you what to steer clear of: Anything that reeks of the familiar (even the pleasantly familiar) is a definite no-no. If it smacks of the routine or the regular, avoid it like the plague. And above all, don’t drag your lover into the dirty laundry pile that’s been building in your emotional closet. You can air that shit out next week, when you’re riding on the glow from this one. For now, keep that door shut and get out there and do something fun.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) You may have hit on a workable formula for modest success. It was probably even easy for you to figure out. There’s a way things are done, and if you’re good enough at it, you’ve pretty much got it made. However, there are other, more original ways to hit it big, in whatever sense you like. The vision you’re contemplating is one of these. Look ahead; you know what your life on the Footpath of the Sure Thing would be like. But imagine if you had the courage to take the Boulevard of your Wildest Dreams. Guess what? You do. Now don’t chicken out.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) I’m impressed by your daring heist robbing your lover’s spiritual safe-deposit boxes of all those supposedly valuable insecurities. But you’re not supposed to sneak into people’s private vaults and steal from them. That you have the wisdom to not only rob them of their most precious and self-destructive illusions but the panache to do it without setting off any alarms is what’s truly outstanding. Congratulations! Now if only we could rid you of the pesky delusion that any of the aforementioned feats are possible. Don’t think you can painlessly dissect people’s longstanding self-deceptions from their lives—sometimes the only way you can get them to see the truth is to hit them in the face with it.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Now that you’ve decided to release any and all pent-up aggression before it further corrodes your insides, you’ve got to figure out a way to do it without causing yourself more angst.
