It must be one of the miracles of the season. When you get Hawaii’s fastest Internet service this Christmas, you will also get two months of service free! And if that doesn’t make for a great surprise gift, this will: Road Runner will be doubling its speed after the holidays! You’ll fly through the air, kinda like Santa, with speeds up to 10Mbps. That means videos that took a minute or so to download will now take seconds. But it’s not just speed that has made Road Runner Hawaii’s number one high speed Internet service. It is all the trimmings that come with the bird, like Road Runner Radio, Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam software, Pop-Up Blocker and

Firewall Protection. It even includes Safe Storage, where you can remotely backup, store and access up to 500 MB of files and photos. Surprise someone this Christmas, or surprise yourself, with Hawaii’s fastest Internet service. Visit oceanic.com or call 643-2337 to order today.

Coconut Wireless Council Keeps It Off the Record “It’s like being a high school student gossiping in the halls.” That’s outgoing Councilmember Jo Anne Johnson, describing the way the Council chooses its chair and assigns various committee positions. The process— which concluded last week—is done behind closed doors, and Johnson said it’s largely a game of “he said, she said” that “leads to a lot of misinformation and hurt feelings.” “I always wanted everything to be out in the open, transparent,” Johnson told us. “What you say privately, why not say it in public?” She said she tried to change things during her decade on the Council, but found, “people don’t want to rock the boat.” Johnson did add that, while she doesn’t like the secrecy, she’s pleased with this year’s results, which saw Danny Mateo keep his chairmanship and Joe Pontanilla take over as vice chair while holding his post as head of the Budget and Finance Committee. “This next budget is going to be rough— experience and continuity are extremely important,” Johnson said. Gladys Baisa and Mike Victorino, veteran Councilmembers who missed out on the chair- and vice chairmanships, will head up the General Plan and Water Resources committees, respectively. Other chair assignments include: Riki Hokama, Policy Committee; Bob Carroll, Land Use Committee; Elle Cochran, Infrastructure Management Committee; Mike White, Economic Development, Agriculture and Recreation Committee; and Don Couch, Planning Committee.

Relearn What You Have Learned Are Hawaii’s high schools preparing students for college? Not adequately, according to a report released this week, which found that nearly 40 percent of

state public high school graduates who enrolled in the University of Hawaii system in 2009 had to take remedial English and math classes— essentially relearning things they should have already been taught. The picture on Maui is no rosier. Baldwin (35 percent remedial math, 30 percent remedial English) and King K. (41 percent remedial math, 31 percent remedial English) were close to the state average. Meanwhile, at Maui High a whopping 48 percent of grads were lagging in both subjects, according to the figures from Hawaii P-20.

Distilllers NEWS BRIEFS

being deployed there this week. The soldiers, stationed at Oahu’s Schofield Barracks, will join almost 4,000 members of Hawaii’s 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team currently carrying out “Operation New Dawn.” Granted, thousands of U.S. forces have left Iraq and the ones still there are supposedly focused on “non-combat” duties. But five members of Stryker Brigade have been killed since September, including Sgt. David Luff, Jr., who died this week “of wounds sustained from enemy smallarms fire” during “advisory operations” in Tikrit, according to a military release.

“It’s like being a high school student gossiping in the halls,” said Jo Anne Johnson, describing the way the Council chooses its chair and assigns various committee positions. High schools shouldn’t shoulder all the blame; education is a cumulative process and knowledge gaps only widen with time. But the numbers underscore a fact that’s already clear to most teachers, parents and casual observers: our schools—and our keiki—need help.

So when will the war really be over? By the end of 2011—maybe. That’s the date the Obama Administration has set, but earlier this month Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he’d be “open to discussing” a longer stay if Iraqi forces aren’t ready to take the reins. Calls to mind the words of Aristotle: “It is more difficult to organize a peace than to win a war.” ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1423c

ntire forests have been sacrificed to describe the joys of giving, to sum up the warm, mushy feeling that comes from altruistic acts. It’s the thing that made old Scrooge declare, after his apparitioninduced epiphany: “I am as light as a feather, I am as happy as an angel, I am as merry as a school-boy, I am as giddy as a drunken man.” But really, all the words in the world (even ones from Dickens’s pen) are no substitute for the real thing. And so we’ve stuffed the following pages as full as a Christmas goose with the wish lists of local charities and non-profits whose funding, in many cases, has decreased even as the demand for their services has skyrocketed. So go ahead—give. If you’ve got a lot, give a lot; if you’ve got a little, give a little. Either way you’ll be helping someone in need, and raising your own spirits in the process. “

WEEKEND HULA SHOWS PHOTOS BY AUBREY HORD

he time is right for Hawaii to unleash a project of this nature. We have the talent in front of the camera, the experience behind it, says writerdirector Brian Kohne. A Baldwin High School alumnus, Kohne says he spent 27 years abroad learning how to make movies so he could return home to tell Hawaii stories and focus on the what and why. It worked—Kohne, with his creative partner, producer Stefan Schaefer, has accomplished something special, something everyone said could not be done. From the flicker of just the first few frames, you’ll see: Get A Job is going to change everything anyone’s ever thought about locally made films. “About us, by us, as Kohne says, this independent feature film is so far—and by far—the best fiction produced on our isles, from our isles. It was shot entirely on Maui over 21 intense days this spring, and features 175 local castmembers (of 180). It isn’t the endall be-all of Maui movie making—there’s always higher heights—but it is a wonderful beginning of something that’s long overdue. Documentaries aside, the few and far between projects preceding Get A Job have been so bush league, it’s become too easy to automatically dismiss all local efforts. But this film is the antithesis of amateurish— though it is a raucous contemporary comedy wrought with slapstick silliness— and manages to convey a convincingly heartfelt story, one that doesn’t belong to the characters alone, but to every mixed-bag Mauian who hustles to make ends meet, who aspires to achieve what’s worthwhile and who wants somebody to love. Two Maui icons tackle the lead roles of William (Willie Kahaiali‘i) and Merton (Eric Gilliom). It’s a pairing that Kohne calls “the dichotomy of two dudes. Antipodal though the characters may be, their interaction and antics explore how no one’s journey can be mutually exclusive from another’s, especially once paths collide. (In this case it’s literal, as William plays good Samaritan to Merton, who’s suffered a mango-picking bike accident.) William, an employment agent, is tasked with turning Merton into his company’s against-all-odds success story, to secure a promotion and thus the financial security he needs to tie the knot with his longtime girlfriend Laura (Carolyn Omine, an executive producer and writer for The Simpsons). But Murphy’s Law is king in Merton’s life—or rather, William’s life with Merton in it. After hitching his wagon to Merton, a fruit-bartering savant of simple pleasures, William finds himself unwillingly

single, homeless, unemployed and with his cruiser (already just making it by “on a hope and a prayer) jacked-up on cinder blocks. “At first you want to disassociate yourself from him, Kohne says of the Merton character. But, through William’s compelling and thoroughly likable resoluteness, Merton’s charms become evident. “Willie is a unique talent, says Kohne as we screen the film in his home theater. “He’s primarily self-taught and there’s no one like him. Kohne says that it’s easy to take Willie K’s talents for granted, but that his performance “is what allowed Eric to really delve into the manic side of his character. And it’s true— were it not for Willie’s rooted realism, the Ace Ventura-esque lunacy of Eric’s portrayal might have strained the suspension of disbelief. Like salt sprinkled on pineapple or ketchup on scrambled eggs, they’re a pair that ought not go together, but is somehow so ono.

G

et A Job has broken boundaries, proving it’s possible to create a quality Hawaii story, by Hawaii people. But the film is just a piece of a well-thought-out package years in the making—and the genesis of this “miracle movie helps explain it. Kohne and Gilliom are longtime friends, classmates and purveyors of performing arts, and it was Gilliom who introduced Kohne to Willie K about eight years ago. Kohne had a concept—what was to become the Barefoot Natives—about which Willie was finally convinced after reading another script by Kohne called Brothers Kuleana. But Brothers, as well as the local industry in general, “first needed a credibility exercise, says Kohne— and that was Get A Job. But Kohne’s master plan was wider still, in that the Barefoot Natives needed to precede the film, to develop a strong identity and body of music (the film highlights 18 Barefoot Natives tracks, plus other local musicians like The Throwdowns). If you’re not familiar with the group, the

Barefoot Natives aren’t merely a musical pairing of Gilliom and Willie as themselves. The Natives are fictional characters— theatrical, multimedia performances—and Get a Job is the first chapter in their story. Long-term, Kohne envisions creating a TV series, and this new movie proves the worth, and viability, of that idea. So there’s more. A lot more. And that’s just the William and Merton story, not the myriad other stories Kohne and company have to tell, or the stories they hope to see spring from Hawaii at large. And that’s exciting. Even more exciting than seeing friends, family and familiar famous people cast in Get A Job, because it heralds a future where this is not a one-off anomaly, but a sustainable industry we can create together. Here’s the catch: Get A Job, for all its intrinsic value, still needs to be commercially viable. The production team is shopping it to film festivals around the world, so the upcoming Maui premier and party (on Sunday, November 28, 6pm at the Castle Theater) will be the only opportunity to see it for a long, long time. Besides, no sense wait for it to return home with the Mainland stamp of approval (that would be some shame, eh?), it is our movie after all. Though ticket sales to an event like this could go to help the flick’s bottom line, the team just wants to throw a party (complete with a concert from the stars et alia). So 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit the MACC’s arts in education programs, and it’s also a drive for the Maui Food Bank (bring donations). “Maui wanted this film,â€? says Kohne, “and Maui gave this film in so many ways.â€? â–

hen brilliant filmmaker Taylor Steele and senior editor of Surfing Magazine Nathan Myers team to host a surf video contest, neither the resulting film nor its process is piddly. Through five rigorous rounds, thousands of surfers and filmmakers submitted two-to-three minute segments, vying for audience approval and a spot in the film Innersection: Blue. Twenty-five winners were chosen by popular vote, and two of them—Clay Marzo and Matt Meola (with “filmers Adam Klevin and Elliot Leboe, respectively)—are Maui’s own. Even after they’d won, the winners again took to the waves and reels, and some “surprised [us] with 100 percent new footage, says Meyer. “We’re writing you from deep in the edit cave now, Meyers says in an October 26 innersection.tv post. “Midnight oil. Hammer and a blowtorch. We’re getting medieval on this thing. Now complete, 30 simultaneous “Black Friday world-premiers are slated across the globe—and First Light’s got one of ‘em, with Marzo and Meola serving as hosts. The boys will be signing autographs and doling out tons of giveaways (including an SOS surfboard)—but the biggest prize remains, potentially, for one of them: the DVD of Innersection will hit surf shops on November 27, packaged with a unique card/code that will allow the holder to vote for the surfer with the best section, and the winner gets a cool $100,000. So let’s do that math again: two masterminds behind production, five rigorous rounds of competition, 25 winners, 30 simultaneous world-premiers and $100,000 on the line. Whew. That equals, like, infinity awesome. 242-7469, 579-9244; mauiarts.org, mauifilmfestival.com

The Bailey Show Saturday (November 27), 9am-3pm, Bailey House Museum & Yokouchi Estate, Wailuku, $10/$15 Ah, the Bailey House Museum. Forgive me if the following sounds weird (because—disclaimer—it is), but I love that place so much, there’s a sick, Antiques Roadshow-loving side of me that just wants to make dust angels on the floor for days on end, in an effort to soak up a bit more of their historical goodness. This Saturday I can get my fix without looking like a psycho, at the 10th annual “E Ho‘olulu Aloha” (To Grow Love) benefit for the Maui Historical Society. They’re encouraging you to stretch out on blankets or low-backed beach chairs so you can comfortably enjoy the day’s entertainment (in between grinding onolicious fare, observing cultural demonstrations like poi pounding, lei and kapa making, lauhala weaving and Hawaiian quilting and shopping for unique gifts from the vendors and at the museum’s gift shop). Speaking of which, Uluwehi Guerrero (pictured), fresh off wins for Album and Entertainer of the Year at the Na Hoku Hanohano awards, will headline, joined by Richard Ho‘opi‘i, Lei‘ohu Ryder, Halau Hula Kauluokala, Na Leo Lani O Maui community choir and emcee Braddah Poki of Pacific Radio Group. 244-3326, mauimuseum.org

Supreme Hula OK, I’ll admit it: I haven’t entirely gotten through the Schaefer International Gallery’s newest show, Ho‘oulu: The Inspiration of Hula. There are four fine-art portraits, three vignettes of hularelated artifacts from families with “uninterrupted genealogical lines of hula,” a looped video of archival interviews and 70 black and white portraitphotographs of loea hula (hula resources). It may be overwhelming, but it’s worth spending extra time to read the accompanying text, as every portrait boasts insightful narrative from each subject, and collectively they create a fascinating dialogue among masters in an age of revival. You’ve got until December 23 to take it all in, but I’d start now. To round out your experience, save the date for the PHOTO BY FRANCO SALMOIRAGHI gallery’s “Storytelling Festival: Family Hula Stories” event on Saturday, December 11 (11am-1pm, free). Photographer Shuzo Uemoto, who took most of the images on display, will be on hand to discuss his work, as will the featured hula families. Speaking of which, the Farden ‘ohana—who have made “a significant contribution to popular Hawaiian music and hula”—present a special show, “Generations: The Farden Family in Hula & Music,” this Saturday (November 27) at the McCoy Studio Theater (7:30pm, $25). 242-7469; mauiarts.org

Sign Language SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC.21) Sagittarians are famously known as the truth-seekers and truth-tellers of the zodiac. Being habitually frank means you can’t always understand (or, occasionally, feel compassion for) those who are deceptive or untruthful in order to get their way, avoid confrontation, or simply for fun. This, however, is one of those situations where you must practice compassion and forgiveness without the empathy that would make it all so much easier. This is not to say you must approve of the falsehoods—just don’t be all condemnatory and mean about it. Remember, you really shouldn’t judge someone until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes. Since their shoes won’t fit your feet, please give them the benefit of the doubt. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You don’t usually have a problem securing the alone time you require to maintain your well-being and sanity—but that does become much trickier over the next couple months, when holiday obligations seem to make some of your family and friends lose their rational minds and assault you with virtually impossible demands and overthe-top guilt-trips. Nevertheless, you must struggle to cling to the equilibrium you know is vital, while being compassionate, graceful, and giving those you love at least most of what they need. This is, of course, much easier said than done. Nevertheless, it’s your current priority. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) You find love when you least expect it, or when you’re not looking for it, or so the cliché goes. However, not looking for it and actively avoiding it are two different things. Taking yourself out of most or all situations where you might potentially find what you seek is probably a pretty dumb move, whether it’s romance, or anything else, that you’re looking for. You need to put yourself back into those scenarios that are rife with so much potential, not because you need that potential to be realized, but because you’re at least open to it. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Some mornings you’re afraid to look in the mirror, worried it might crack. Fortunately, your self-esteem isn’t exactly in synch with your actual appearance—you’re far more likely to underestimate your own appeal than to imagine it accurately. Try to keep that in mind the next time you’re feeling down on yourself, and perhaps check in with someone who’s likely to be kinder (although not unrealistically so) in their assessment of your current state. One thing’s for sure: things are never quite as bad as you think they are—so lighten up and remember, the more beautiful you act, the more (most) people will see you that way. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Few things turn you on more than a real team effort— especially one you helped organize. It’s a beautiful thing when people wholeheartedly and effectively work together to accomplish a goal. You could make something like that happen again this week, but it’ll mean having a very clear, cool vision and communicating it effectively without coming off as bossy or pushy. It’s a tricky line to walk, but I’m confident that if you pay attention, and simply think a few seconds before you speak (every time you open your mouth!), you should be able to pull it off. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) It feels so good to just be kind. You forget that sometimes, because you’re opinionated, stubborn, and passionate, and prone to getting caught up in the moment and your own life. You forget to just go out of your way, for no concrete reason at all, to simply do something extremely, unquestionably nice for someone—preferably someone who has no way of ever paying you back. This isn’t about validation, or karma, or proving a point. It’s just about how good you’ll feel being that generous and sweet—and thus, in a way, doing it for yourself. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) If I don’t get enough caffeine into my system early enough in the day, I end up with a headache. It’s unpleasant being a slave

to my coffee intake, and a few times a year, I quit, endure two days of headaches, and enjoy a few months of freedom from my morning addiction—until the next time I need a boost and relent and down a cup or two of joe. Most of your habits are similarly innocuous but also restrictive or limiting in the same way. Freeing yourself from them, even temporarily, can be tremendously liberating, psychologically, as well as give your mind, soul, and body a break. Consider doing so this week. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Preparing for an unpleasant (but possible) scenario doesn’t mean you need to be pessimistic about it. In fact, it should be cause for you to relax and enjoy the situation and expect it to go well precisely because you’re prepared. Once you’ve set yourself up for catastrophe, you can chill out, because in the unlikely event it actually happens, you’re good to go. Go ahead and plan around a worst-case scenario this week, but once you’ve done all you can, do your best to forget about it entirely, and simply enjoy what’s actually happening—which is certain to be much better than whatever disaster you imagined. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) You can’t keep everything you don’t want out of your life. As soon as you’re done piling all your furniture in front of the front door, you’ll realize that you forgot to barricade the back door, or the windows, and suddenly your house is full of zombies—or whatever it was you were trying to shut out. I’ll just assume it was zombies, and now they’ve got you pinned against the blockade you just finished constructing. Imagine that whatever it is you don’t want around is zombies, and deal with it accordingly. Blow its brains out (figuratively, anyway), or at least make sure you’ve got plenty of room to run. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) There’s a disturbing trend beginning to happen here and there: when something dramatic happens, many people’s first instinct is to tweet about it, or youTube it, instead of trying to actively help the situation. I hope that’s still a repugnant concept for you, Virgo. If someone collapses in front of you, please help them before you take out your phone to capture the moment for posterity. In fact, that should be your first instinct in most situations: how can I help? After you’ve done your part (or established there’s nothing you can do), you can think about the other stuff (like capturing a viral internet video). LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Adrenaline junkies get off on the risk to their lives and wellbeing. However, most of the activities they engage in aren’t nearly as risky as they feel (though they are by no means risk-free). It’s because our bodies have instinctive reactions to certain situations that our rational minds can’t stop—however, we can choose to observe and deal with it in any way we like. For instance, those adrenaline junkies are pretty sure that even though their bodies are certain death is imminent, it’s actually probably not. You can’t do shit about your body’s natural responses to danger, arousal, fear, and so on, but you can control what you do about it. Remember that this week. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Hang out your laundry to dry and you will have fresher, more enjoyable clothes to wear—unless it rains. The wind is free and better than a mechanical dryer, but it’s also unpredictable. Outdoors your clothes can also be filched, peed on by animals passing by, or made fun of by the neighbors. I still think it’s worth the risk (assuming you have anywhere to hang them, of course). When we talk about “not living your life in fear,” it’s usually in reference to rather overbearing concerns—but the little anxieties can put just as much of a hitch in your quality of life. This week, focus on ditching them.
