Judging What Matters

Bag Things To Come?

If she’s approved by the state Senate, Judge Sabrina McKenna will become Hawaii’s ďŹ rst openly gay Supreme Court Justice. That’s interesting, historic—and newsworthy. Yet it’s also delicate. Emphasize Judge McKenna’s homosexuality too much and you risk overshadowing her qualifications (she’s spent nearly two decades in Hawaii’s district, family and circuit courts). Ignore it, on the other hand, and you just look silly. That dilemma was on display in a recent Honolulu Star-Advertiser dispatch, which declared in the headline, “Judge Secure With Sexual Orientation,â€? but didn’t mention what, exactly, the Judge’s sexual orientation was until the end of the third paragraph. Meanwhile, in a press release announcing McKenna’s nomination, Gov. Abercrombie called it “the most important decisionâ€? of his career—but never acknowledged the fact that McKenna is gay. Certainly it would be nice to live in a world where these things don’t matter, where a person’s gender, race and, yes, sexual preference are no more important than the color of her eyes. But let’s get real: we don’t live in that world. The world we do live in is one where it takes years of wrangling to secure basic rights for minority groups, where people are still discriminated against, attacked and even killed simply because of who they are. In this world, the fact that Judge McKenna is gay matters. It’s not the only thing that matters. But to pretend it’s immaterial diminishes the significance of the moment—and buries the lede.

Maui County’s plastic bag ban is less than a month old, and already it’s earning praise from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), along with a similar measure passed on Kauai. “The leadership shown by the counties of Maui and Kauai in banning these bags will help keep their environments pristine,â€? said EPA ofďŹ cial

And he’s not alone; ACLU Hawaii has also threatened legal action. Looks like the message got through—as the 2011 session opened, the Senate adopted new rules that do away with ofďŹ cial invocations and the House may take similar

Numerous other American cities and counties have enacted bans, and several states are reportedly considering them. Meanwhile, on January 1 Italy became the ďŹ rst country to institute a nationwide ban. Could the U.S. follow suit? Seems unlikely—the petroleum lobby fights token battles against regional bans, but they’d surely pull out all the stops if a serious effort got rolling in D.C. Some Senators have continued to hold informal prayer circles, something Senate President Shan Tsutsui told the AP is a “matter of free speech. Naturally, atheists and true believers across the blogosphere pounced on the story, branding it a resounding victory for secular rationality, a perilous step toward spiritual darkness and everything in between. Mostly it’s a symbolic gesture. Then again, when it comes to religion (and politics, for that matter), symbols count. ■To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1433c

We already send Arizona our excess prisoners, and now the dysfunctional relationship deepens: Lawmakers in the Grand Canyon State are considering a bill that would require all Presidential candidates to produce an “original long-form birth certificate” to get on the state ballot. At the same time, Hawaii lawmakers are considering a bill that would let people look at Obama’s birth records (for a $100 fee), skirting privacy laws. FIGHTING INTOLERANCE The Turkish military’s legendary homophobia (rare among NATO countries) comprises both zero-tolerance for homosexuality by service personnel and the requirement of rigorous proof by anyone applying for exemption from service by claiming to be gay. (Homosexuality is the only disqualifier from compulsory service for able-bodied men.) In personal experiences recounted for Foreign Policy magazine in December, some gay men seeking exemptions were ordered to verify their claims by producing witnesses to their homosexual acts, or by photographing themselves fully engaged—and to be persuasive to authorities, the conscript had to be depicted in the “receiving” position in sexual intercourse.

WHIZ SHOW The SEGA video company’s Japan division began test-marketing its new Toylets game in January, designed for men’s urinals. With sensors in the basin and a video screen at eye level, men score points based on the strength and accuracy of their streams. Among the suite of games: sumo wrestling (squirt the opponent out of the circle),

graffiti-erasure (strong streams wipe out more graffiti) and skirt-raising (the stronger the stream, the higher a woman’s skirt is “blown” upward).

ehbrah@mauitime.com A big thank-you to the kind woman on Big Beach who found our car key in a plastic bag in the water and asked around, then gave it to the lifeguard. We had scraped together enough money to take our kids to Maui for a week after a long, hard time at the end of my cancer treatment. We are all so tired and freaked out, we do things like swim with car keys in our pockets. It was shaping up to be a miserable day trying to cope with the outcome of this latest mistake—thank you for saving us from that. It was great to have a week in the warmth of Maui. ■

TROUBLE BREWING In a December incident near Orlando, a former Ku Klux Klan “Cyclops,” George Hixon, 73, and his son, Troy, 45, and Troy’s girlfriend fought, resulting in Troy allegedly firing gunshots toward the woman’s feet and the subsequent arrests of the two men. According to Osceola County deputies, the altercation was precipitated by the girlfriend’s unhappiness that she got the “cheap beer” while the men kept the “good beer” (Budweiser) for themselves.

Now, its run may be coming to an end—the store’s lease is up at the end of February and a steep rent increase will likely make it impossible for the Nomura family to stay in business. of interesting ones, and a look at whether they’ll be among the lucky few that avoid the chopping block.

CIVIL UNIONS, TAKE THREE THE BILL For the third straight year, same-sex couples are fighting for the right to legally wed in Hawaii. Civil union bills died in 2009 and 2010—via a Senate stalling tactic and a Gov. Lingle veto, respectively. On January 28, the Senate approved by a 19-6 vote SB232, which, “Extends the same rights, benefits, protections

and responsibilities of spouses in a marriage to partners in a civil union.” The bill is now moving through the House and action is expected soon. WILL IT PASS? House leaders say they have the votes and Gov. Abercrombie has promised to sign it. This looks like the year gay-rights proponents finally get to celebrate— but expect backlash and possible lawsuits from the vocal and well-organized opposition.

APPOINTED BOE? THE BILL In November,

Hawaii voters said “yes” to the idea of an appointed, rather than elected, Board of Education. Now a bill— SB8—that would allow the Governor to select BOE members subject to Senate confirmation has sailed unanimously through the Senate and passed its first reading in the House. WILL IT PASS? Abercrombie criticized the appointed-board ballot measure during the campaign—and took heat for it from his Republican opponent, Duke Aiona—but with clear stamps of approval from the voters and the legislature, the change seems inevitable.

ROLLING THE DICE ON GAMBLING THE BILL It’s as certain as the sunrise: every year a handful of

very legislative session is defined more by failure than triumph. Hundreds of bills are introduced each year, and most are snuffed out quietly in committee, killed once they reach the floor or impaled by the Governor’s veto pen. Of course, no legislative death is permanent—there’s always another session to tweak and reintroduce a bill and hope the winds of fate and political will have shifted. The 2011 session is no exception. Lawmakers on Oahu have introduced bills dealing with a number of familiar issues. Here’s a handful

gambling bills are introduced, with the promise of injecting cash into state coffers and juicing the local economy. And every year various groups—from environmentalists to religious conservatives—express outrage. This year’s batch includes a bill that would allow slot machines in Waikiki, one that would green-light gaming on Hawaiian Home Lands and one that could involve Hawaii in a multi-state lottery. WILL IT PASS? Besides games of chance, all the bills have something in common: they’re probably headed nowhere. As of this writing only one—HB394—had received a public hearing, and it was deferred. Meaning the safe money’s on Hawaii remaining a (legal) gambling-free zone.

PUBLIC ACCESS: SAFE AT LAST?

DREDGING UP THE SUPERFERRY

THE BILL For whatever reason— money, control, spitefulness— powerful players in the public and

and the courts, MDA took its case to the legislature last year. That bill stumbled, but they’re back with two more: SB588 and its House companion, HB1339. Both would require “county liquor commissions to adopt or amend rules regarding conduct of patrons and to define the term ‘dancing.’ WILL IT PASS? Both bills passed first reading and were referred to committee. But both could easily be buried by other—arguably more pressing—issues, meaning this is a case where letters and phone calls could truly make a difference. For more info about the bills and MDA, visit mauidanceadvocates.com.

NO DATE FOR VALENTINES DAY? THE BILL Almost exactly two years after the Supreme Court ordered it out of the water, supporters of the Superferry (or, rather, a nameless “system to ferry people and cargo between the islands) haven’t given up. HB191 would establish a special fund and open the door for the state to buy back the Alakai and Huakai, which the federal Maritime Administration puchased out of bankruptcy. WILL IT PASS? A similar bill introduced last year by Maui Rep. Joe Souki sank before it left the harbor. The state’s financial outlook hasn’t improved much since then and neither have the odds of the government bankrolling an expensive and dubious ferry system.

DEFINING DANCING THE BILL We’ve been following the efforts of Maui Dance Advocates (MDA) for years, as the small, scrappy group has tried—so far in vain—to get the Maui County Department of Liquor Control to change its vague, arcane dancing rules. After being thwarted by the LC’s rule-making commission

private sector seem dedicated to stamping out public television in Hawaii (and across the country). Maui’s Akaku has fought off various legal and legislative challenges and now two companion bills—SB583 and HB112—could finally give the station a sense of security. The bills would establish a new state organization to oversee PEG (public, educational, governmental) channels, which up until now have been under the thumb of the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. WILL IT PASS? At a press conference last year, then-candidate Abercrombie—along with a number of other heavyweights including Senate President Shan Tsutsui, who co-introduced SB583—expressed support for Akaku. The station—and PEG programming in general—still have influential enemies. But, for the first time in a while, their friends might be stronger. â–

et another food establishment has opened in Wailuku, minus a proper sign. I know the vague, bureaucratic county signage policies can be daunting, especially when your forte is food, so I can’t hold it against them. In fact, I had a selfish thought to keep this his place all to myself— but I can’t keep good food a secret. The best way to find Vineyard Food Company—a modest cream-colored building between Market and Central—is by the rainbow flag hanging off to the side of the double doors. The small dining room m has limited seating but most of their clientele work in Wailuku and order lunch to go. Bottled d drinks from the fridge include Honest Teas, Dasani ani water and a few sodas. Specials vary week to week, ek, and you can sign up for an e-mail list that’ll keep you current. Recent popular items have included the Vineyard cheeseburger and the Italiano and Reuben sandwiches. The deli menu is well-crafted and focuses on fresh. “My favorite food is deli food,” explains Chef Ralph Giles. “It’s good food ood fast, but not fast food.” Sandwiches range nge from $6.75 to $7.25—and can all be ordered as wraps. That’s a selling point for me as I’ve been on a recent wrap kick—I —I love the lightness, portability and simple ple texture. Their mahi mahi sandwich is tempura fried with a lemon caper aioli; i; I got mine rolled in a phenomenal herb b wrap. The crisp exterior held up, with the lemony aioli juicing the flavor. Another standby is the chicken salad,, a special concoction of roasted chicken, almonds, raisins and curry served with tomato and cucumber. I’m not a big fan n of raisins, but they work in this classic curry combo, which packs a sweet-and-savory crunch. If you’re hankering for

a more substantial lunch, h, try the stick-to-yourribs Vineyard Street. Thee titular creation features tangy homemade mango go barbecue sauce drippingg off thinly sliced warm roast beef on an onion bun. It’s like a gourmet Sloppy Joe. The deli also offers a full line of classic salads: s:

Superbowl Diets & Wailea Openings he federal government released its new dietary guidelines just in time for the Superbowl. Their advice is being hailed as a breakthrough because it finally calls for Americans to reduce their intake of solid fats, sugars and sodium, and eat more vegetables, fruits, lean meats and fat-free milk. It still doesn’t come out and directly say “eat less meat, a very politically charged statement in the U.S. of A. Furthermore, they only say eat fewer processed foods, addressing consumers rather than the food processors themselves, who pack sugar, sodium and added fats into our food. How will the guidelines affect Superbowl Sunday? Probably not much. Potato chips, sodas, prepackaged wings and deep-fried grease traps will still fill America’s living rooms (and swell our waistlines). Of course, if you’re tired of these old standbys, there are alternatives. Homemade chips and guacamole are easy, as is making your own lowfat dip with Greek yogurt and herbs and serving it with fresh-cut vegetables. Another idea is to pick up food from a solid local establishment (saves dishes and cleanup, too). For more on that, and a rundown of islandwide spots to watch the big game while eating and imbibing, see This Week’s Picks (page 21). Edge Of Your Seat New festival unleashes no-rules theater—are we ready?

E

dinburgh started it. New York, San Francisco and Sydney followed suit. And now, Maui’s got its own Fringe Festival. “It’s a weekend marathon of original one act plays featuring local and Mainland playwrights,” says festival director Michael Pulliam. “No boundaries, no restrictions.” In 2010, Edinburgh’s festival (which started in 1946) drew 1,400 hopefuls. Maui’s got about 10. “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” says Pulliam. Our festival’s inaugural year may be humble, but the undertaking is still ambitious. And they hope to grow involvement in the years to come. “Hopefully this will be a good introduction to the idea of Fringe,” says Pulliam. “You’re not expected to love it—you’re not expected to even like it. Just appreciate the bold risk these artists are taking and enjoy something that’s generally unseen on Maui.” The festival goes down this weekend at the historic Iao Theater, with four main acts taking the stage each day and extra vignettes sprinkled throughout. It’s the culmination of a year-and-a-half of planning, with Maui OnStage having sought and received submissions May through November of last year. Though it’s generally understood that Fringe performances can (and some might argue should) be raw, festival directors still curated submissions and turned down a few they felt needed to work out major kinks. The four primary showcases are: Gotta Live, by Andrea Giammattei; Inside Stretched Out, by Pat Masumoto; Last Questions, by Marilynn Hirashima; and No Intention of Doing Either, by Sharyn Stone. Bonus performances include Curtis “Chino” LaForge and original theatrical pieces titled The Matterhorn, The Trojans and So Tell Me About This Guy. Plus, a special sneak peek at what’s on the horizon from Maui OnStage. (See schedule sidebar for details.) Tickets for each each show are $10, but if you were smart enough to buy a VIP pass for $50, you probably already know it’s good for you and a guest to get into any show you please—plus the pre-festival VIP party (and, if you’re not attending everything, you can “pass your pass” to a friend). For the performers, it’s a pay-to-play deal; but for aspiring playwrights and producers, the $500 fee is still a deal. See,

launching an independent production— with theater rental and technical crew among some of the weighty basic expenses—is darn-near impossible without

and—believe it or not—yours truly. Risk. Reward. Raw, staged art. Sounds like the makings of a magical weekend to me. And hopefully one of many more to come.

“You’re not expected to love it—you’re not expected to even like it,” says Fringe Festival director Michael Pulliam. “Just appreciate the bold risk these artists are taking.” gobs of capital or generous backers. Part of the beauty of Fringe is that it gives artists the opportunity to stage their shows on their terms at minimal cost. “Since the time of Shakespeare, kidsat-heart have thrown caution against the wind and put on shows with their own money—praying that when they jumped off the diving board, there would be water below,” says Pulliam. Meh. Money. That’s peripheral for Fringe. It’s all about art—“original, edgy theater,” says Pulliam. Besides, Fringe artists stand

to win something better than pecuniary gains—glory. The Lilikoi Award will go to the most passionate, moving piece. The strongest, most polished piece will receive the Koa Award, and the best actor or actress will win the Hoku Award. Doling out the honors are judges Kathy Collins, Paul Janes Brown, Maui Weekly’s Sarah Ruppenthal

FRINGE FEST Friday (February 4), 6-11pm / Saturday (February 5), 2-9pm / Sunday (February 6), 2-9pm, Iao Theater, Wailuku, $10 per show

Gotta Live - Written by Andrea Giammattei. Musical direction by Clayton Logue Friday (February 4), 9:30pm; Saturday (February 5), 8pm [preceded by Curtis “Chino” LaForge, 7:45pm, and followed by a surprise performance by Maui OnStage],

9pm; and Sunday (February 6), 2:15pm [preceded by The Trojans, 2pm]. Songs and stories about the “risky business” of life and the “heart and humor” it takes to get through it all. Andrea Giammattei, an acting teacher on Maui, originally produced Gotta Live In New York City, and says the show inspired her move

to Maui in 2004. Musical director Clayton Logue is a well-known pianist whose local theater credits include ProArts’ Urinetown and Sleeping Beauty, as well as Maui OnStage’s The King & I.

Inside Stretched Out - Written by Pat Masumoto. Directed by Derek Nakagaw Friday (February 4), 6pm; Saturday (February 5), 3:30pm; and Sunday (February 6), 6:15pm [preceded by So Tell Me About This Guy, 6pm]. Five years ago, Masumoto’s madcap production of Mad Cloak inspired her to write Inside Out. Now, Inside Stretched Out revisits the mayhem in a whole new way— “a story within a story within a story,” says Masumoto. Featuring a huge cast with lots of action, it’s replete with “grabbing, pushing, stomping weeping and violence to bodies—in a safe rehearsed way.” Last Questions - Written by Marilynn Hirashima. Directed by Carol Summers Friday (February 4), 7:15pm; Saturday (February 5), 2:15pm [preceded by The Trojans, 2pm]; and Sunday (February 6), 7:30pm. Those with sneak peeks at Last Questions have effused that while the set may be simple, the writing is smart. At their father’s funeral, four sisters pause at his casket and take a moment to reflect—sometimes joyfully, sometimes painfully—on their relationship with him. No Intention of Doing Either - Written by Sharyn Stone Friday (February 4), 8:15pm; Saturday (February 5), 6:15pm [preceded by The Matterhorn, 6pm]; and Sunday (February 6), 3:30pm. “Little did I know when moving to Maui in 1992 that my only theatrical outlet for the next 18 years would be testifying in front of the Maui County Council in order to legalize bed and breakfasts here. Hopefully the County found it more entertaining than I did,” says Sharyn Stone, a native of Australia with a passion for theater. No Intention of Doing Either is about Stone’s life Down Under. “We all have stories to tell that are unique. This is some of mine,” she says. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1433ae

Riding The Wave Emerging Canadian band heads to Maui to gig—and surf without wet suits

O

h, Canada. Known for its maple syrup, ice hockey, lumberjacks and surf. OK, Canada isn’t exactly known for its surf, but it does have surf—the best of which can be found around Vancouver Island off the coast of British Columbia, the country’s westernmost province. Hailing from this wintry isle—and immersed in its burgeoning surf scene—is the emerging indie rock band Current Swell. Their solid songcraft has been making waves up north and in the five short years since their formation, they’ve produced three studio albums, opened for the likes of The Beach Boys, Xavier Rudd and The Beautiful Girls, and have gigged at venues

“We never called ourselves surf rock, other people did, says Stanton, adding that no single genre encompasses the band’s broadly sourced style. “But it’s flattering we’ve been accepted into that circle— especially being from Canada. What then, if not surf rock? “Folk, rock, blues and reggae, says Stanton. If that sounds like the ingredients of surf rock to you, a quick listen to their music—especially their latest album, Protect Your Own—shows a clear emphasis on folk and blues. Employing harmonica, banjo and trumpet (for the reggae bits), they’ve devised a modern sound infused with a country keen en homage to fellow Canadian Neil Young. Songs like “Cursed and “Nail’em Up have infectious, twanging syncopation, with metal-esque riffs ripped on

like the Ottawa Blues Festival and 2010 Winter Olympics. Recently returned from touring Australia with Ash Grunwald, the band again heads for warmer waters with a special six-show stint on the Valley Isle. It’ll be the band’s first time in Hawaii, and they’re naturally looking forward to jumping in the water during their downtime. “The scene [in British Columbia] is actually pretty big, with respect to the challenges, says Current Swell frontman Scott Stanton. “For us, going for a surf is an all-day venture. We have to drive for two hours and hike for half an hour just to get there. Then, we have to get into a big suit of rubber—5mm wet suits, 7mm hoods and gloves. Even then, you can only surf for two hours before your limbs start to go numb. It’s an enthusiasts-only lifestyle, and one Stanton says has informed the band’s songwriting. Being a group of good-looking blonde boys brandishing surf boards alongside their instruments (be-sweatered though they may be) has led to their music generally being labeled as “surf rock.

hallow bodies and a speed like the fast tangle of a bucket of springs. They slow it down with dewy songs like “Wishing Well or the moremainstream “Young and Able, the music video for the latter visually chronicling their beloved Northern surfers’ life. Despite obvious cold-weather obstacles, surfing Canada “is absolutely stunning, says Stanton. He effuses about how the hikes to favorite surf spots take them through old-growth forests (Vancouver Island is largely protected parkland), and of the camaraderie forged among surf mates during the long commutes and while warming-up between sessions with bonfires and cups of coffee on the beach. The video for “Young and Able, feels kind of like Ben Harper’s “Diamonds on the Inside styled by an Anthropologie catalogue for boys—and its charms have swept Current Swell on a riptide of popularity. It’s a popularity they didn’t see coming. “The whole band, in a way, was kind of a fluke, Stanton says. “It’s cool how it all fell together so nicely for us. In fact, the band

didn’t even have a name by the time the local press started ringing for interviews, and it was a computer-savvy friend’s quick insert on their Web site—instead of “Band Name Here—that stuck. “Me and Davers [Dave Lang], the other songwriter in the band, met and started playing songs. He’d learn my songs, I’d learn his, Stanton says. Upon hearing the pair, other musicians quickly approached them to join ranks, soon followed by booking agents and mangers. “We’re a weird bunch of guys to be playing music together, but I wouldn’t have it any other way, Stanton says of the current lineup: co-founder Lang, drummer Chris “Crispy Petersen and bassist Aaron “Ghosty Wright. “We’re a diverse bunch of cats who love having a good time onstage, offstage, all the time, Stanton continues. “We’ve really constructed our lives on that. There’s no long-term plan. I have goals and everything, but basically the goal is to have fun. If success comes our way, cool. Spoken like a true surfer. ■To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1433ae2

I Cast You Out, Unclean Movie! Not even a pregnant chick vomiting nails can save this horror clunker The Rite

very January, right around Superbowl Sunday, Hollywood belches up a horrible horror movie. This year’s offering: The Rite, about a skeptical young man of the cloth (Colin O’Donogue) who goes to Rome to apprentice under an exorcist (Anthony Hopkins) in order to test his faith and discover whether he truly believes in God. This is the second film from director Mikael Hafstrom about a guy who grows to believe in the supernatural. The first, 1408, I admired; it had a tour de force turn by John Cusack and was one of the better Stephen King adaptations. This one, meanwhile, falls flat. It’s unfortunate, because The Rite is always interesting, featuring unsettling scenes of are-

they-or-aren’t-they-real exorcisms that allow the audience to share in the protagonist’s skepticism. But the film commits a cardinal horror-movie sin—it’s rarely scary—and fails to deliver on its intriguing premise. Like every movie about exorcisms, The Rite wants to be on the level of The Exorcist, the seminal 1973 film that spawned a thousand imitators. Unfortunately it’s more

large spikes—the doubtful priest still doesn’t believe in the existence of evil. Hopkins’s peculiar choices of late— including last year’s The Wolf Man and the forthcoming superhero flick Thor—are beginning to mar his once-prestigious filmography. But you know what? He gets a pass. He played Hannibal Lecter, for heaven’s sake, and has at least 20 other brilliant performances to his credit. And, while this isn’t close to his best work, he still commands every scene with his effortless, authoritative presence. The bigger problem is Colin O’Donoghue, who looks like a Calvin Klien model and only has one expression. In fact, he gives a performance so woefully wooden and one-note, I feared that he was possessed by the spirit of Keanu Reeves. like the unintentionally hilarious Exorcist II. Thoughtful theological discussions are constantly undermined by visions of killer frogs, a mule with glowing red eyes and some ripe-to-the-point-of-rotten dialogue. Such A Perfect Day

Roots, Clock, Reggae

Thursday (February 4), 7:30pm, Castle Theater, MACC, $12/$28/$35

Saturday (February 5), Hard Rock Cafe, Lahaina

Ah, Thursday morning. Your eyelids blink open, welcoming the dawn. The birds chirp “Morning Mood” from Edvard Grieg’s Peer Gynt. A butterfly lands on your nose as you take a leisurely stroll to your neighborhood coffee house. You approach the counter but need not utter a word—the barista knows exactly how you take your brew. You pick up a fresh copy of MauiTime, still warm off the presses, sit back and let the ink sink in. Bliss. And just when you thought your day couldn’t get any better (or weirder, because you’re reading about it right now), you read in This Week’s Picks that Christopher O’Riley—famed pianist and host of NPR’s From the Top—will be joined by Carter Brey—the New York Philharmonic’s principal cellist— tonight at the Castle Theater. Perfect. But alas! The PHOTO BY WENDY LYNCH benevolent universe thwarts you with the temptation of yet another awesome event. The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale Marine Sanctuary hosts a talk by the Maui Astronomy Club, with Tracy Latimer presenting “Meteorites: Rocks from Space” (7pm; free). And there’s free refreshments provided by Whole Foods. Thunder claps. You’re wracked with indecision. And the birds screech “O Fortuna” by Carl Orff as they flutter away... Though the band Midnite says they “forgo the frills of extensive remixes, overdubbing and other musical refinements,” they’re still Jah Rascientists in the crux of old school roots music. “Expansive, hypnotic rhythms alongside the messages of peace, universal brotherhood and cultural resistance to Babylon,” are Midnite’s core commitments. And they’re also committed to great, long performances; their sets are known to push or exceed three hours. PHOTO BY JAY WEST Slated to open for Midnite are The Lambsbread with The Fiyah Red Band as well as Sounds of Jah. This fivepiece ensemble has grown by leaps and bounds since their 2008 debut Groovin, and their latest, Rock Easy, is a polished package that cracked Requests’ top-five local albums of 2010. Feeling Super?

It’s All Happening At The ZooZoo

Sunday (February 6)

Thursday (February 10), 7:30pm, Castle Theater, MACC, $12/$28/$38

Go Chiefs! Wait. What? The Chiefs aren’t playing the Packers in the Super Bowl? That was Super Bowl “I,” in 1967? We’re already into “XLV”? Oh. Still though: this Sunday is Super Bowl Sunday. To those of you who have the NFL Sunday Ticket—and have had the luxury of spending Sunday mornings in your PJs—I’ll say this: have fun cleaning up. [If you don’t want to cook, try ordering out from spots offering specials like Banyan Tree Deli & Bakery (662-3354), Rodeo General Store (572-1868), Whole Foods (8723310) or Soup to Nuts (243-3663)] Meanwhile, you diehards who’ve been at the bar at 8am probably already have your spot staked out. For all you in-betweeners, here’s the list of parties by zone: CENTRAL: Ale House - 355 S. Kamehameha Ave. (877-9001); Hang Loose Lounge - 333 Dairy Rd. (877-6284); Steel Horse Saloon - 1234 Lower Main St.; 243-2206. UPCOUNTRY: Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon - 142 Hana Hwy., Paia (579-8085); Stopwatch - 1127 Makawao Ave. (572-1380). WEST: Betty’s Beach Cafe - 505 Front St. (662-0300); Cool Cat Cafe / Captain Jack’s - Wharf Cinema Center, Front St.; (667-0908 / 667-0988); Dollies Pub and Cafe - 4310 L. Honoapiilani Hwy. (669-0226); Famous Dave’s - 736 Front St. (661-1125); Maui Brewing Co. - 4405 Honoapiilani Hwy. (669-3474); Ono Bar & Grill, Westin Maui, 2365 Ka’anapali Parkway, (667-2525); Pailolo Bar & Grill, Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort, 6 Kai Ala Drive, (6673200). SOUTH: Ambrosia - 1913 S. Kihei Rd. (879-1011); Haui’s Life’s A Beach - 1913 S. Kihei Rd. (891-8010); LuLu’s Kihei - 1945 S. Kihei Rd. (879-9944); Oceans Beach Bar & Grill - 1819 S. Kihei Rd. (891-2414); Makena Clubhouse Restaurant 5400 Makena Alanui, (874-1111); Mulligans on the Blue - 100 Kaukahi St., Wailea (8741131);The Sports Page - 2411 S. Kihei Rd. (879-0602).

Masters of magniloquent mascots, Portland, Oregon’s Imago Theatre builds off the success of its seminal productions FROGZ and Biglittlethings with a new stage show called ZooZoo. To rousing acclaim, their “unique, playful menagerie of creatures” has found a home at Broadway’s New Victory Theater and on a slew of stages the world over. Imago’s acrobatic, full-bodied puppetry has captivated audiences from keiki to kupuna—and ZooZoo’s highlights include gentrified anteaters, posturing penguins, a giant dinosaur and hitchhiking rabbits. Fans should be warned that this show is a little more down-tempo than its predecessors. Nevertheless, Imago Theatre’s visual vignettes are never short on whimsy, weirdness, wit, and wonder—and ZooZoo is sure to delight one and all. Enter to win tickets from MACC and MauiTime by visiting mauitime.com/contests. Preshow dinner by Alexander’s Famous Fish. 242-7469; mauiarts.org

’m wrapped in a Snuggie watching Avatar on Blu-ray, eating a chocolate-dipped waffle cone pulled from a Costco-sized box in a freezer. I couldn’t feel more American. As the movie ends, my kind hosts (i.e. parents) head to bed, so the remote control is all mine. Unrestrained by complicated blankets, I lift my still-cozy arm to channel surf, pausing only to occasionally raise the roof when the Snuggie spirit moves me. One pause happens to be on a 24hour news channel, and I’m forcibly reminded that real world events are occurring. Tickers and hyperbole indicate there’s some crazy crap happening out there, man. Blinded by info-graphics that offer little useful information, I turn to my BBC iPhone app for actual news. Australia’s East Coast has been devastated by floods and now braces for Cyclone Yasi—perhaps the biggest in known history. Floods have become commonplace Brazil, where they recently elected a TV clown whose stage name translates to “Grumpy” and who campaigned with the slogan “It Can’t Get Any Worse.” Tunisians rose up against 23 years of repression with what’s become known as the Jasmine Revolution. And in Egypt, thousands are taking to the streets with U.S.A-made tear gas to protest 30 years under the iron thumb of Hosni Mubarak. Sifting through links on Twitter, I read about (and re-Tweet) riots giving way to the ransacking of the famed Egyptian Museum, where “two mummies were reportedly beheaded” (this later turned out to be an exaggeration) and I’m struck by something: I’m a little jealous of Egypt. Wouldn’t a little uprising be nice? You know, getting up and standing up for something you believe in so much, you’d fight—and risk dying— for it. Just thinking about it is like a shot of epinephrine—and suddenly something that is gruesome and tragic and that I know nothing about provides a strange extrinsic euphoria. Wrapped in the warmth of cheap fleece I drift to safe sleep, smiling at puerile fantasies of impassioned speeches shouted over the chorused chants of mobilized droves; candlelit plans for a heroic coup; cigars and khaki pants and wheatpasted posters a la the French summer of ’68.

I

wake up a few hours later. The Snuggie is no match for the settling Kula cold. The TV’s still on, throwing strobes of gradient blue on the far wall, as clips keep flickering and the ticker keeps ticking. The world seems consumed by wrath. Natural disaster. Political upheaval. Human strife. All, naturally, set to commercials. Commercials for cars. Body wash. Orange juice. Reverse mortgages. Mascara. Workout videos. Snuggies. Commercials like the one for the FPS/TPS game Call of Duty: Black Ops, which features Kobe Bryant alongside actors playing regular folk, shootin’ ’em up in their civy uniforms, Cold War style. It ends with the words “there’s a soldier in all of us.” Online chatter shows that most have defended this commercial when some have called it a tasteless trivialization of our service people’s sacrifice. The commercial’s supporters argue that people are smart enough to know how to separate fantasy from reality, and that real soldiers generally like the game. I’m not a gamer, and certainly no soldier, but I am wracked with guilt by the fact that I can sit on my parent’s cushy couch and push buttons at a big screen without having to give so much as a fleeting thought as to how my freedoms were won. Instead, I’ve fantasized about fake fray. I’ve wished for something worth fighting for when it’s been all around me, and the only thing missing has been my will. The commercials have paused. The news is back on. A celebrity enters rehab. A little girl’s gone missing. It’s snowing. It’s sunny. The stock market is up, is down, is all around. But I cannot look. Instead I watch the wadded waffle cone wrapper slowly unfurl, and feel sick. ■ To read more Kula Kid with links and photos and stuff, and to leave comments, visit mauifeed.com/kulakid To share or save: mt.hy.pr/1433k

HOROSCOPE

sign.language.astrology@gmail.com +

Sign Language AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) I’m a huge fan of honesty, but if you feel compelled to share a truth, ruthlessly check your own motives. Sometimes, it’s because you feel guilty and want absolution and forgiveness; occasionally it’s because you want to be downright malicious. These are terrible and selfish intentions, even if they’re not entirely conscious. Sharing the truth should be about ultimately helping the person with whom you share it (sometimes in the long-term rather than the short-term), not about your own egocentric concerns. If spilling the beans ultimately helps no one but you, keep your mouth shut. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) While sharing everything with the most important person in your life is appealing in theory, it’s not necessarily wise in practice. In fact, dumping all your troubles on one person isn’t really fair, even if they claim to want it. Share them out—let your therapist take the bulk of the burden, if you have one; otherwise, let different friends help you through life’s various difficulties—and, of course, giving as good as you get when they ask for your support. Having one amazing intimate friend is fortunate indeed; however, having a handful will make your life feel richer than you thought possible; this week, work on cultivating such a reality. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) A common internal conflict comes up for most of us when the “right thing” to do is also the most difficult or least desirable. It’s perfectly natural for us to try to rationalize not pursuing that correct course of action; but we must strive to not be convinced by such rationalizations, and just do the right thing anyway, no matter how loathsome or challenging. That, of course, is this week’s test—don’t talk yourself out of doing the right thing, or into engaging in a plan you know is wrong, even if it’s easy or less painful. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) It’s nice to let someone off the hook when it comes to the high expectations placed upon them by other, more demanding, folk in their life. However, giving them carte blanche to drop all the basics and make you carry that weight isn’t helping anyone—not you and certainly not them. This isn’t about making someone meet an impossible standard—just asking them to rise to the bar every healthy human in their right mind should be able to achieve with a modicum of effort. Best-case scenario is helping your friends achieve their true potential; at the very minimum, it’s not enabling them to languish far beneath it. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Happiness is often simple but occasionally becomes a surprisingly complex concept. While it’s easy to guess what’d make you happy during the next five minutes (an excellent chocolate bar might fit the bill), formulating a plan for longterm happiness and fulfillment is decidedly more challenging. That goal should be near the top of this week’s agenda. It’s time to plant the seeds of ideas that could sprout into sustainable, enduring satisfaction. This is probably something you should have done ages ago, and more consistently since then (not every such seed flourishes, after all), but it’s better late than never—and better now than later. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) If someone asked you to murder a criminal who wronged them, would you do it? Probably not. Not only is such “vigilante justice” against the law, it’s likely against your own moral code as well. Of course, what you’re being asked to do is nothing so extreme as taking another life—but it still lies outside your rules for how you should live. Just because it’s less drastic doesn’t mean you should feel compelled to bend your convictions to fulfill their expectations. Stick to your guns. They’re worth sticking to—and doing so might teach someone a valuable lesson about how they make demands, and who they make them to. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Thank you notes are mostly considered old-fashioned and unnecessary, in this day and age. A verbal “thanks” usually

suffices for most things; although most people would appreciate more, few are likely to make a stink about it. However, that doesn’t mean expressing gratitude is a bad idea. In fact, it may be even more touching, in the context of the blasé ingrates most of us are surrounded by. If someone’s done you a solid, then be sure to let them know just how much you appreciate it. It’s not only a nice thing to do, but it’s also more likely to garner a repeat performance, should the need arise.

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions on page 6

1. The Facebook “like” icon 2. “The Cockeyed Mayor Of Kaunakakai” 3. Greg Oden

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) For those sensitive Cancers and impulsively intuitive Pisces, this is old news: feelings are confusing, contradictory, and virtually immune to logic. That doesn’t mean they can’t be reined in by common sense, naturally—something you have in spades. However, trying to analyze them, and make them align to some periodic table of emotional elements, so you can scientifically “solve” them, has never gotten you anywhere before, so why do you think it should start working now? Quit questioning, judging, or denying what you’re actually feeling; that’d be a huge waste of time—and you have little enough of that to spare as it is. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Many of the things we take tremendous pleasure in are potentially dangerous to us, especially in large quantities. Eat too much chocolate, sunbathe too long, or imbibe too much alcohol and you’re putting yourself at risk. Nevertheless, it’s still fun to occasionally indulge yourself anyway. Life’s short; while moderate enjoyment of potentially unhealthy pleasures is probably your best long-term plan, very infrequent overindulgence can certainly be part of the bigger picture, if it makes your life feel richer. Don’t be afraid to go there once in a while, if the situation seems to call for it—and certainly don’t make yourself feel guilty when you do. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) People who drink tons of alcohol or frequently take drugs often discover it takes progressively more of the stuff to achieve similar results. The same can be true of other experiences as well, such as sharing an intense connection with another person. You either need to keep upping your game, or accept that some of that intensity is due to naturally fade as time goes on. The best solution is embracing a little of both—occasionally (but consistently) making an effort to grow and magnify your intimacy, while also being cool with sparks flying less often or with less intensity than when you first met. This week, try to figure out what the best mix of the two intentions is, for you and yours. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC.21) Sometimes we begin something for the express purpose of having fun—but somehow lose the fun along the way. It becomes about something else, something ultimately much more pointless. Find the fun again, if it’s still there. And if it’s not, ask yourself: “Why the hell am I still doing this?” There might be a compelling reason to continue, despite the dearth of joy in the venture; however, I suspect that any truly good reasons you may have once had are no longer valid. It might be time to move on—hopefully to something that’s actually a good time. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Pain is mostly a neural response to stimuli that’s probably not particularly good for us; in essence, a defense mechanism. However, it can also be an indicator that things are just fine. Pain after exposure to extreme cold is far preferable to numbness, for example; following a workout, it’s a sign that you actually made some progress. It could demonstrate that you’re healing—at the very least, especially with emotional distress, it’s a sign that you’re still able to feel. Making your life all about the avoidance of pain is a bad plan. Trying to mostly aim for only the “good” kinds of pain, though, is an excellent one.
