Coconut Wireless Soda Tax Gets Dumped
Pot In Our Name
When one party controls both the executive and legislative branches—as the Democrats do in Hawaii—there’s legitimate concern that each will act as a rubber stamp for the other. So far, that doesn’t appear to be the case with Gov. Abercrombie and the legislature—at least when it comes to soda taxes. Hiking fees on soft drinks and alcohol isn’t merely something Abercrombie supports; he cared enough
If you went shopping at the Kahului WalMart this week, you might have been handed an anti-marijuana pamphlet by a member of the Maui Police Department. The flyers were meant to send “an important message” to the public, Chief Gary Yabuta told The Maui News. Specifically, MPD is concerned about a pair of bills being considered on Oahu. The first (SB58) would increase the amount of

And two companion bills—SB1289 and HB1062— were introduced to do exactly that. This week, however, the Senate bill was stripped of language concerning “sugary beverages,” which would have been taxed at 10-25 cents per container. Now only alcohol taxes—which haven’t changed since 1998—remain on the table, meaning the bill will pour far less than the originally projected $52 million into state coffers. And that’s if it passes at all. It has the Governor’s weight behind it— but clearly that won’t always be enough.
cannabis a medical marijuana patient can possess, to 10 plants and 5 ounces. The second (SB175) would transfer jurisdiction over medical marijuana from the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to the Department of Health (DOH). (It’s worth noting that both DPS and DOH oppose the bill.) The bottom line: Hawaii’s medical marijuana law is a mess. More than a decade after it was passed, it remains murky and ill-defined, leaving patients, doctors and, yes, law enforcement in a hazy no-man’s-land between state mandate and federal prohibition. It’s government’s job to fix that, and last

year then-candidate Abercrombie told us he would. “If it’s medically sanctioned for use, for relief of pain or any other symptoms, then of course it should be utilized,” he said. Should be, sure; how is another question.
Generally Speaking “The task is daunting,” said Councilmember Gladys Baisa, chair of the newly formed General Plan Committee, which is tasked with updating islandwide planning ordinances beginning with the Maui Island Plan. She isn’t kidding. Last year, the Council managed to slog through only the first seven chapters of the 10-chapter document, though Baisa said she’s “confident” it will be enacted this year. In addition to streamlining the laborious General Plan update, the committee will allow the Planning and Land Use committees to focus on more immediate tasks like land-use approvals and zoning applications, according to a County release. Adjudication Board meetings usually follow a pretty standard, pretty boring procedure. So when something new is introduced— like a visual aid—everyone perks up. The final case on the docket at the February 3 meeting was a charge of serving to a minor against Kihei’s South Shore Tiki Lounge. As prosecutor John Tam explained, four people—two of them underage—apparently snuck past the back-entrance bouncer on the evening of July 2, 2010 and managed to get drinks before an LC inspector showed up and demanded to see their IDs. They didn’t have any, but owner Mikhail Tassi told the board kids often do come with IDs—fake ones. He estimated that his staff confiscates at least four or five fakes every weekend, sometimes more. To prove it, he brought in a stack, which was passed around the room and under the inquisitive squints of boardmembers and department officials (a few whipped out their wallets for a comparison). There's no way to know for sure, but it’s entirely possible the Tiki Lounge’s efforts have prevented more underage drinking than the entire LC minor decoy program. And they’re just one bar; others—including Casanova in Makawao—have previously presented confiscated IDs to the LC and the cops. They always nod approvingly, but do little else. Except, in this case, slap the Tiki Lounge with a $2,000 fine.
DANCE BILL UPDATE: Two weeks ago, we told you about a pair of bills (HB1339 and SB588) that would force county liquor commissions in Hawaii to define and amend rules regarding dancing. It’s the latest effort by Maui Dance Advocates, a scrappy little group that’s previously been rebuffed by the Liquor Commission, the courts and, last year, the legislature. The current House version cleared its first committee hurdle, but it’s still far from the finish line. In testimony provided to the House Judiciary Committee, the Hawaii Family Forum (HFF)—a “pro-family” organization that represents “a network of various Christian churches”—warned the bill will open the door to full-blown gay marriage. “In the states which have adopted civil union laws, activist [sic] have always found them insufficient,” HFF wrote. “Only the redefinition of marriage would be suffice [sic].” And guess what? They’re right. That is the ultimate goal of the gay rights movement— just like the civil rights movement and every other movement that had to march slowly and incrementally up the hill of entrenched intolerance—total equality. NEWS OF THE WEIRD RAGING HEARD-ONS The ear has a “G-spot,” explained a California ear-nose-and-throat surgeon, and thus the moans of ecstasy that Vietnamese “ear pickers” reportedly elicit from their clients might well be justified. A San Jose Mercury News reporter, dispatched to Ho Chi Minh City in January to check it out, learned that barber shop technicians can sometimes coax “eargasms” (as they removed wax) by tickling a certain spot next to the ear drum served by multiple nerve endings and paper-thin skin. Said one female client, “Everybody is afraid the first time, but after, it’s, ‘Oh my God!’”
CHECK YOURSELF Edward Hall III, 24, a Columbia University researcher, was arrested in January for trespassing at JFK airport in New York City after he disobeyed United Airlines personnel and tried an alternative method to board a plane. He told ticket agents he badly needed to be on the flight to San Francisco even though he had forgotten to bring a photo ID. Frustrated, Hall stepped behind the counter and crawled onto the luggage conveyor, where his next stop, minutes later, was the tarmac where bags were being loaded—and where he was arrested.

to ricochet into his eye, resulting in likely permanent damage. Despite the fact that the pole was directly in front of the tee, inches away, Good nonetheless charged the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Hillsboro, Oregon, with negligence and filed a $3 million lawsuit in January.
YOU PUT YOUR VULVA IN, YOU PUT YOUR VULVA OUT A suburban Chicago high school healthclass instructor’s technique for teaching the names of female reproductive parts caught the ire of the Illinois Family Institute religious organization in January. To some of the kids, teacher Jacqulyn Levin’s “game” was nothing more than a mnemonic to facilitate memorizing the anatomy, but others told the institute that Levin’s play on words was chantable, could be set to the tune of the “Hokey Pokey” and was referred to by several students as “the vagina dance.” Said a complaining parent, “It is disrespectful to women and removes modesty about the reproductive parts.”
INCOMPETENT CRIMINALS Jimmy Honeycutt, 27, was arrested in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, in October and charged with five recent robberies of liquor stores. Among the items found on Honeycutt was a telephone directory listing of liquor stores, with the ones recently robbed marked off. ■

Witness to Revolution One Mauian’s account of the bloody uprising in North Africa ast August, anthropologist and 20-year Maui resident Holly Formolo moved to Tunisia, North Africa. She went to teach English to grad students, but had no idea she’d see history unfold. As Formolo—and the world—watched, the Tunisian people drove out dictator Ben Ali with vehement, at times violent protests and the upheaval quickly spread across the region. We sat down with Formolo, recently returned to Maui, to get her take on what she witnessed.
L
What were your first impressions when you arrived in Tunisia, and when did you first notice there was unrest? The city of Tunis is about 7 kilometers from the Mediterranean, with beautiful beaches, date palm trees everywhere—so from the airplane my heart was singing. I was thinking, this is the right move, everyone thought I was crazy for leaving paradise. In my classes, I would try to inspire casual conversations in English with my students, bringing up their [political] situation. Students would look around in fear and close the window if they mentioned their own government. They’d say ‘Ben Ali’ and turn to their cell phone to make sure it was off. They really thought that just saying his name could trigger something in their cell phone and they would be able to GPS their

While he was in the hospital completely wrapped like a mummy with a feeding tube, Ben Ali showed up for a photo op. He had a look on his face that was so fake. The young man died after four days in the hospital, and that was the start of it. The

There’s only one news agency in the whole country, and the censorship is just ridiculous. There were pictures of Ben Ali everywhere. His image was plastered all over the country, even on the archaeological sites. I was in Istanbul visiting friends for Christmas and New Year’s. I was on my friend’s computer, and I saw a story about unrest that had started in this small town in the south of Tunisia called Sidi Bouzid. There was a kid who lit himself on fire in protest because the local police publicly

people had had enough. I checked with my friends back in Tunisia, and they didn’t know anything was going on. The initial uprising started December 17, and here I am on Christmas just finding out about it. I went back to Tunisia New Year’s Day, and by the time I got back, the protests were starting to escalate. Most of the people who took part in the revolution were young graduates, educated—they wanted freedom, democracy, they didn’t want the president and his family to keep prospering while the country sank deeper and deeper.
When did you realize the revolution was headed to Tunis, where you lived? At this point I was following Facebook and Twitter regularly and all reports were saying that the protesters were going to come into Tunis to generate manpower. There would be demonstrations starting
while we were still teaching, so for about two weeks it was tense. About January 10, the protesters had arrived in Tunis and that’s when things started to really get bad.
Talk about what happened. They cancelled all classes until further notice and the entire city was under

artery and missed the bone, but at this point people started flooding in with way worse gunshot wounds—men were dying and women were getting out of cars with them, blood everywhere. People were reciting the Koran and women were wailing and throwing themselves on the ground. We left the hospital through the chaos and went to stay with friends in the suburbs. The army got there overnight, and no one was sure if the army was going to follow the orders of the government and police and shoot the protesters. There was this element of, maybe they’re going to defy orders, which is what they ended up doing. They stood with the people and were the heroes of this revolution.
Now that you’re back, how do you feel? Have you had time to reflect on the experience? My thoughts are definitely still back in Tunisia. Of course, the situation there has been followed up with the revolution in Egypt, with more countries brewing. I think Tunisia gave the whole Muslim world hope that they can get rid of these dictatorships, and I think all the dictators were watching really closely. It’s incredible to be back on Maui. It was my job to keep it together for everyone while I was in Tunisia, and I knew that when I came back to Maui I would just lose it. Now that I’ve arrived, it’s this flood of emotions. Every time I see someone I cry—I cried when I saw you. I can finally let go and that’s something I couldn’t do for weeks. But that’s nothing compared to the people of Tunisia. I can’t imagine what it must feel like for someone who has waited all their life to be heard. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1435u

strict curfew. My friend Stephen [another American teacher] invited me to his roof to take a look at the protests. Everyone said, ‘don’t go out of your house,’ but as an anthropologist I was not going to miss this chance. We saw tear gas canisters being shot our way, and we started getting smoked out, even on the top of the fourth floor. You could see crowds on the street— there were protesters, onlookers and there were people just trying to get home. And so we decided to go to the street. The police didn’t want the onlookers to unite with the protesters, so they would fire shots into the air at first and come on their scooters and push everyone back. We could see from 50 meters away all the onlookers running toward us, so we knew to run in that direction—and then we heard gunshots. We were getting tear gassed pretty thick at that point and Stephen was up with the protesters, so we kept in communication by cell phone. We couldn’t get back to our apartments because the police were blocking us from both sides and they were shooting at everyone—tear gas and real bullets from rifles. The protesters were armed only with rocks. You had police gunshots coming from many directions, a lot of shots in a row, and you could see the guys turning the corner, coming back to take refuge where we were hiding. I saw Stephen, he was limping and holding his camera with blood coming down his leg. Then all the Tunisian guys with him picked him up and carried him toward us. It was this moment of realizing, holy shit, I’m being shot at. The bullet went in and out of Stephen’s right thigh and lodged in his left thigh. Blood was just rushing down. A friend helped us get to the hospital. The only way was through the gunfire. I kept thinking, I’m gonna die. [At the hospital] we realized Stephen wasn’t going to die; it missed his femoral

lose your eyes and picture the universe. Not in some esoteric, “woah dude” sense— really try to conjure the shape of it, the curves and geometric contours of, well, everything. Impossible, right? Not in the mind of Garrett Lisi. In 1999, Lisi earned a PhD in physics from UC San Diego. That was the moment most people would have pursued further studies, angled for a tenured teaching position or tried to land a lucrative privatesector job. Instead, Lisi uprooted his life, took what savings he had and moved to Maui to live in a customized van. He made the decision for a number of reasons. One was his dissatisfaction with string theory, which has dominated the world of theoretical physics for years. Another was his desire to get outside the restrictive confines of academia. But mostly, he just wanted to surf. Lisi is a self-described geek (which, he explains, is different from “nerd” and
10 FEBRUARY 17, 2011
“dweeb” in that the former is socially awkward and the latter has no special interests or skills). But he’s also a genuine waterman, addicted to the waves. “In the water is where I’m most happy,” he says flatly, in the presence of his girlfriend, Crystal Baranyk (he adds that he’s also very happy with Crystal, after a notquite-awkward pause). Baranyk is an artist whose vibrant nature paintings adorn the walls of the couple’s twobedroom rental in Kula. She stuck with Lisi through the van-living days, and says it was “a good test for the relationship.” Asked to choose between physics and the ocean, Lisi balks. “I’d never make that choice,” he says. “I have to have both.” He has to have the ocean because it gives him joy. He has to have physics because he’s trying to solve what he calls “the greatest puzzle there is.” In 2008, Lisi sent ripples through the scientific community when he co-authored a paper for Scientific American—along with physicist James Weatherall—titled “An Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything.” Almost immediately, the blogosphere lit up with intense, at times vitriolic debate. Soon after, newspapers and magazines came calling, intrigued by the story of the science-genius surf bum and his big idea.
“I’d been working on this stuff for 10 years. I’d put out a paper every couple years, and usually get five or six e-mails,” says Lisi. “Instead, I woke up to a Pandora’s inbox.” Feedback ranged from constructive criticism to bitter attacks. Lubos Motl, a Czech string theorist, blasted Lisi’s idea as “a huge joke” and “a long sequence of childish misunderstandings” in a blog post accompanied by a crudely Photoshopped image of Lisi on the beach with hundreds of bikini-clad babes. “Basically everything he said was either false or addressed in [the paper],” Lisi says of Motl. “It was hilarious. He’s a nut.” The criticism wasn’t all so inflammatory. Writing for Scientific American after the magazine published Lisi’s paper, Graham Collins conceded the theory “sounds like an incredible discovery” but suggested there are “a few Jurassic-size flies in the ointment.” Lisi acknowledges the theory is flawed. “It isn’t complete—and it may be incomplete in a way that’s difficult to figure out,” he says. However, he adds, he has “an unusually high confidence” that E8 Theory is at least “going toward a correct description of the universe.” Asked whether the personal swipes bother him, Lisi shrugs. “I’m a surfer,” he says. “Surfers are without question more
vicious and competitive [than physicists]. It’s like, ‘Come on guys, I’m used to seeing fist fights break out. You’re talking about an argument on the Internet—how intimidated am I going to be?’”

ith his shaved head and smooth, symmetrical features, Lisi resembles a freckled mannequin. His eyes, appropriately, are the color of the ocean in the midst of a swell. His voice is clipped yet vaguely rhythmic; his words spill out quickly, though he sometimes pauses in strange places, as if struggling to shoehorn complex mathematical concepts into the crude, imprecise confines of language. »

foundations of physics and cosmology.”) While he’s intentionally, almost willfully disconnected himself from academia, Lisi wants to interact with other scientists. The Internet is his main outlet, but he also attends symposiums and delivered an address at the 2008 TED Conference, which helped propel his theory into the mainstream. And he’s working on something he calls “science hostels.” “Physicists like to travel a lot, but there aren’t really a lot of places where they can go and work on their own ideas,” he explains. “One thing I came to was this idea of a network of small science institutes, where scientists can spend time working and enjoying the beautiful environment for small or large amounts of time—anywhere from a few days to a few months.” Lisi says his natural attraction to places like Maui and Tahoe—where there are plenty of vacant vacation homes—has allowed the idea to blossom into reality. “Science is extremely valuable to society,

hen Lisi discusses string theory, disdain drips off his words. He even compares it to religion— perhaps the ultimate scientific insult—though he later adds that he “doesn’t want to openly offend other physicists, many of whom I respect.” For Lisi, string theory is a once-interesting idea that has gone off the rails, a dead end that scientists continue to chase because they are too invested in their work to pull out. “String theorists thought they were going to have everything figured out within five or ten years and physics was going to be wrapped up—but it didn’t happen,” he says. “So their models got more and more

discover something called superparticles, a key piece to the string theorists’ puzzle that would also put a serious dent in E8. “If superparticles are found, this E8 Theory is either wrong or it’s going to require serious revision,” says Lisi. “But I don’t think they’re going to find them.”

» He isn’t condescending—his stabs at humility seem mostly genuine, if occasionally rehearsed—but he speaks with the innate confidence of someone who grasps things most people can’t. The first time we meet, it’s over Thai food at the Maui Mall. He walks in wearing a T-shirt; on the front are dozens of colorful shapes arranged in a series of concentric circles connected by a spiderweb of thin lines. I don’t realize what I’m looking at until I ask Lisi to explain his exceptionally simple theory in the kind of exceptionally simple terms a math-challenged writer might understand. “It’s right here,” he says, pointing to the shirt. In essence, Lisi posits that there is a shape to the universe, a mathematical structure called E8 (the shape on the shirt, and an example of a Lei group, named after 19th century Norwegian mathematician Sophus Lie). All the known elementary particles— and their interactions—are part of the structure, along with some particles that have yet to be discovered. The reason E8 Theory is potentially revolutionary is that it accounts for all four of the fundamental forces: electromagnetism, strong and weak nuclear force and, most notably, gravity. “Einstein described gravity as the curvature of space-time—that’s a very geometric concept,” says Lisi. “You’re talking about a warping fabric, and describing gravity as how that space-time is warping. And it works perfectly to describe almost everything going on in our universe. But it doesn’t have anything special to say about matter. It’s a very concise, succinct description of gravitation. You can throw in matter and it works OK, but you don’t really get any insight into how matter works.” Lisi says the takeaway is that Einstein offered “a basic geometric description of how fundamental forces in the universe are working.” And, he concludes, “if this part of the universe is geometric, and we only have one universe, then the whole universe should be geometric.” That idea ultimately led Lisi to E8. He was in Tahoe at a friend’s house, scribbling equations in the wee hours, when the proverbial light bulb went off. “I had all this algebra laid out for the way things were interacting and it looked like sort of a coherent, single algebra—like it might be part of something larger,” he remembers. “On a whim I decided to see if all this algebra fit into something else. I started trying things, and ended up trying E8. And everything fit perfectly. It was absolutely astonishing. You don’t get too many moments like that.” “He was beaming,” says Baranyk, who was sleeping in the next room and woke up to find Lisi excitedly checking his math. Soon after, Lisi immersed himself in everything E8. “A lot of people look at this and say,
and most people know that and feel they should be nice to scientists,” says Lisi. “This is a direct and personal way for the public to offer support, to create a connection between people who have resources and the scientists who can benefit from them.” he second time I sit down with Lisi it’s at his home in Kula. A recent surfing accident split open his upper lip, meaning stitches, a break from the waves and, thus, more time for physics. (It also meant delays for a European film crew that flew to Maui to shoot footage of Lisi for a documentary about the LHC.) After sandwiches, soup and homemade ice cream (which Lisi calls his “only vice”), we move into the living room so he can show me the Elementary Particle Explorer. It’s an interactive application on his Web site (garrettlisi.com) where scientists—and anyone else who’s interested—can play with particle interactions within various Lie groups, including E8. Like most things Lisi describes, I can skim the surface of the Particle Explorer. I appreciate its bright colors and spinning shapes, and I understand—or at least think I understand—the basic, underpinning concept. I don’t understand the equations Lisi has written in neat rows on a piece of paper next to his computer (it’s one of the few pieces of paper in the house; Lisi has “completely digitized” his life). But mostly, I still don’t quite get the point. If the universe has a shape—whether that shape is E8 or something else—and someone discovers it—whether that someone is Garrett Lisi or someone else— what will it mean? Will anything change? I ask Lisi this, and he smiles. He contemplates for a moment. Then he shakes his head. “Other than a sense of personal satisfaction, no—it wouldn’t change my life.” That’s a direct refutation to those who claim Lisi and other unification theorists are seeking God. Lisi, an atheist, says the whole notion of God misses the point. He’s not after the creator of the universe—he’s after the universe itself. Everything. I ask whether he hopes that one day his name will be synonymous with genius, like Einstein. “My life’s weird enough as it is,” he replies. “I’ve been pretty happy leading a quiet existence.” Even though I think Lisi enjoys the attention more than he admits and would love to be remembered by history, I believe him. He has chosen silence over noise, gravitated toward isolation over hustle and bustle. Maybe it’s in the quiet places—on the waves or in a cabin in the snow—that the truth reveals itself. Maybe the shape is right in front of us, if only we could open our eyes. ■

Whale Of A Time Celebrating the songs of humans and cetaceans alike
M
aui loves the Pacific Whale Foundation’s Whale Day—and has for 31 years and counting. To celebrate the denizens of the deep—specifically the humpback whales who bask in our Hawaiian winter—Valley Islanders show up in droves for weeks worth of activities that culminate with a morning parade and day-long festivities including art, entertainment, an expansive farmers’ market and a litany of booths supporting Maui nonprofits. (This year it all happens Saturday, February 19, 9am-6pm.) Sure, the Whale Day itself is packed with entertainment—and whales themselves entertain us—but the mysterious whale song warrants attention, too, from whaleand music-lovers alike. To the human ear, the whale song is a strange, melancholy moan—like a bow drawn long and low across cello strings, spotted with clicks. In the peak of the season, submerge yourself in the Pacific and you can hear the Hawaiian humpbacks’ song with the naked ear. Drop a hydrophone in the water and it’s like a medieval cathedral, organ pipes churning an otherworldly concerto. But why and how do humpbacks sing? We chatted with Greg Kauffman, chief scientist and founder of the Pacific Whale Foundation, who explained some of the science behind whale song. “As for the anatomy? That’s the great mystery—we don’t really know,” says Kauffman. He explains that humpbacks don’t have vocal chords, and that they don’t emit air when vocalizing. The prevailing idea is that sound is generated in sacs between the tracchia and lungs, sort of an internal bagpipe. While people can detect humpback whale songs upwards of 10 miles
WHALE DAY ENTERTAINMENT WHAT CAN BE SAID ABOUT HAWAII’S hottest performers—set to play the oceanside stage at Whale Day—that that hasn’t already been said? How about comparing them to whales? ANUHEA In Hawaiian, “anuhea” means “a cool, soft fragrance” (and is a rather nice name, if I do say so myself). So if pop singer/songwriter Rylee Anuheake‘alaokalokelani Jenkins, aka Anuhea, were a whale, I say she’d be a beluga—the very cutest sub-Artctic species of cetaceans. Colloquially, the beluga is known as the “sea canary” for its high-pitched, melodiously squeaking song. Anuheajams.com
underwater, there’s no way of knowing how far away whales can perceive them. Only male humpback whales sing—and only during mating season, presumably to establish their strength and worthiness as a mate. Their song is extremely complex—in fact, some scientists contend it may be the most complex vocalization in the animal kingdom. Fascinatingly, every male in a breeding ground sings the same song, and that song develops as the breeding season progresses. Further, Hawaii is the epicenter of all songs sung in the surrounding breeding grounds. Kauffman explains this is because the largest concentration of North Pacific humpbacks inhabit Hawaiian waters during the breeding season. At the same time, whales are promiscuous and males will travel where there’s, um, tail. So while female humpbacks tend to return to the same breeding ground, once it’s been established as successful for that individual, males are known to roam—
thus the transference of song patterns. “Simply put, their songs are comprised of notes, and those notes comprise phrases,” says Kauffman. “For example, if a series of notes were expressed as ‘A, A, B’—and those notes are repeated in a phrase, ‘A, A, B; A, A, B’ and so forth—the song might develop to ‘A, A, C; A, A, C.’ But, once the song has changed, they never repeat a previous pattern.” The hottest item in whale-song research right now is the idea of cohorts. Kauffman explains that males appear to be singing and attracting other whales, perhaps as a way to showcase themselves comparatively. When Kauffman started studying whales in the ’70s, he says cohorts were not observed— likely because the whale population had hit an all-time low. Now that humpback populations are recovering, their behavior is changing—and, excitingly, expanding. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1435a&e

Filmed-on-Maui Sandler flick doesn’t do us proud Just Go With It
★★★★★
Rated PG13/116 min.
T
he last time Adam Sandler made a comedy set in Hawaii, it was 50 First Dates in 2004. That was also the last time Sandler made a really good comedy. Not counting the dark, underrated Funny People, the SNL alum has spent years cranking out truly lousy flicks: Click, Bedtime Stories, Grown Ups, You Don’t Mess With the Zohan. Despite its potential—and the fact that it was shot mostly on Maui—add his latest to the trash pile. Sandler stars as a plastic surgeon who falls in love with a “total 10” (supermodel Brooklyn Decker). To convince his dream girl he’s ready for a long-term relationship, he talks his office assistant (Jennifer Aniston) into playing his pretend, soonto-be-ex wife. Let’s stop here for a second. It’s true that women say they like a funny guy, but over the years Sandler has been
paired with some incongruously hot chicks: Winona Ryder, Kate Beckinsale, Salma Hayek, Jessica Biel. Now he’s got two of them, one merely for show. The real Adam Sandler—the multi-millionaire movie star— could probably pull that off. The prickly, frumpy doctor he plays here? Not as likely. The first half is wall-to-wall “jokes” about patients in need of plastic surgery, with heartless scenes featuring disfigured people who we’re supposed to laugh at because… um, they’re different? The ruse Sandler plays on his bride-to-be is both pointless and cruel, especially when Aniston brings her kids into the elaborate deception. While most Sandler vehicles have a supporting cast of colorful, off-the-wall characters, the fringe players in this one are simply annoying. There’s a sidekick who pretends to be German and a little girl with a cornball British accent who, in one especially cringeworthy moment, lands head first in a pile of mud. Nicole Kidman shows up as a vicious society girl and nemesis of Aniston—it’s a performance that won’t win her any awards, but it does belong in a smarter movie.

It’s a deal—we never make another Adam Sandler movie.
Seeing Kidman and Aniston in a highly competitive hula dance at the Grand Wailea is supposed to be a comic high point but instead ranks as one of the strangest movie moments of the year. Without spoiling the “surprise,” there’s a main character who turns out to be gay. We know this because: a) in one scene, he successfully puts a coconut up his butt; and b) he flirts with a group of sailors. Between this and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Sandler seems intent
on pushing gay characters back into the hopelessly dated category of swishy queens—or back into the closet. Clearly returning to Hawaii didn’t get Sandler’s creative juices flowing. Too bad— we enjoyed having him. At his best he’s a gifted comedian. Maybe someone can remind him of that when he’s handed the script for Just Go With It Again. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1435F

CathARTic Experiences rom glitter and macaroni masterpieces in refrigerator frames to works worth millions on the Christie’s auction block, art is all around us—and anything can be art. If you’re ready to engage in the serious business of art appreciation, there’s no better time than this weekend. Starting Centrally, it’s your last chance to check out the Schaefer International Gallery exhibit “Legacy of Landâ€?—a collaboration between the MACC and Maui Coastal Land Trust (closes on Saturday, February 19). Twenty-four artists were invited to create works inspired by a specific piece of conserved property on Maui, and the result is paintings, sculptures, multi-media video and textile installations. One intriguing feature of the exhibit is the featured artists’ field journals, wherein each documented their thoughts and inspirations. Art happenings always abound island-wide, but aficionados will do best by filling the ol’ guzzler and heading out Hana side. If you’re Source-savvy (and you should be—all the cool kids are), you’ve probably already planned your weekend at Camp Keanae (Friday-Monday, February 18-21). Modeled after Burning Man, Source doesn’t allow spectators—everyone’s part of creating and collaborating. Source also puts the “artâ€? in “barter,â€? and participants are expected to “share the ethos of the gift economy.â€? For a different kind of intimate art experience, keep winding down Hana Highway and enjoy a self-guided open studio tour in the first-ever Maui Open Studios (Saturday-Sunday, February 19-20). Eleven East side artists round out the third and final weekend of the event, which gives you a unique opportunity to meet creative types in their work spaces. My crazy cool activist friends (currently fighting sexism/illiteracy/hunger/ centipedes-on-steroids in countries with more vowels than I’m comfortable pronouncing) are fond of extolling the value of education. “Education,” they say in drumbeat cadences, “Education is whe-re it all sta-arts. You have got to edu-cate, yourself!” With that masterly chanted, allow me the pleasure of introducing the UH Cancer Center’s panel, “New Frontiers: Unraveling Cancer in Hawaii.” Experts and survivors will discuss prevention and care, including leading research on the role of genetics, nutrition and other factors. There’ll also be a Q&A session regarding the mysteries of cancer and the search for a cure (or cures). (They’ll probably use words with more consonants than I’m comfortable pronouncing.) And breakfast will be served, since you can’t go educating yourself on an empty stomach. 564-5916, 441-7710. [Ynez Tongson]
The Whole Package Maui Mall’s anchor store, Whole Foods Market, celebrates one year on Maui with a slew of activities, starting with birthday cake on Thursday, February 24, at noon. Seriously— who doesn’t love free cake? And you just know it’ll be organic and all natural. If that’s not enough to whet your appetite, they’ll be screening the documentary Turning the Canoe, a film about sustainability on Maui, and offering samples from every department on Friday. Also planned is a festival on Saturday and Sunday showcasing a taste-bud tour of the islands courtesy of vendors like Maui Cattle Company, Tedeschi Winery, Hana Fresh and Maui Coffee, along with some of Oahu’s finest. Finally, the Whole Foods Market Gallery will host an opening on Saturday with new art and a chance to meet the artists, plus light refreshments. Dig in. 872-3310 [Jen Russo]

any moons ago, I stood up a pretty boy businessman to hang/make out with a vagabond writer who’s more scar tissue than face. We sat in a drizzle outside Idini’s, smoking cigarettes and watching “HOT STUFF” and “CALL ME” melt off the chalky busts of a few dozen Sweethearts. It was beautiful in a sort of cheap, tragic way. Had I known then that I’d retain this moment as my most romantic Valentine’s Day memory, I wouldn’t have been in such a hurry to head back inside for another beer. Before and since, every one of these Hallmark holidays has been a massive letdown. So every year I cleave to this recollection—and hope for a February 14 that will top it. Last year, I gave up on wishful thinking. Massive boyfriend issues aside, I nearly died because of a paper cut (seriously), and chemo was quickly turning Hershey’s kisses into projectile bile that would put Regan MacNeil to shame. Given all of the above and then some, I assumed I’d be generally unaffected when taking part in a trendy, trivial thing like speed dating—especially when couching my approach with journalistic intent, and forcing my good buddy Marc to suffer along with me. How wrong I was. Though I’ve resigned myself to one day being a lonely cat lady, in the process of speed dating I realized I’m a scaredy cat. Though I have neither the time nor the inclination for a relationship, I dislike the idea of my unattractive nerves precluding me from the possibility of one. So, my subconscious concluded, if I wasn’t being receptive, I couldn’t be rejected. Yet even while playing the role of pseudo-participant, I both noticed and felt that rejection is, by default, the very essence of speed dating; it’s all about first impressions. The experience was not unlike sticking my head in a bombinating beehive— fast, loud and sweetly stinging. At Maui Brew Co.’s first stab at playing rapid-fire cupid, we had two minutes with each person before a ringing bell urged us onward. This tight time frame ruined my planned barrage of questions about fantasies, homosexuality,
bestiality and race/religious restrictions. I suppose this was a good thing, because the very last rule on the “how it works” flyer read, “Have fun and DON’T BE CREEPY.” (Damn. Now what?) In all, I talked to 17 guys (and six women afterward)—and didn’t get kicked out for being a weirdo. It was a refreshingly mixed bag of participants—from tourists to locals, lawyers to the jobless. A third of the guys I met are somehow affiliated with the brewery, and were coerced to participate given the predominantly female turnout. Even with a mere two minutes a pop—and despite the event being pleasantly well organized—by last call we’d only cycled through half the group, and many were turned away from the get-go for lack of seats. Of the guys that were there of their own volition, all said they’d seen speed dating on TV and thought it would be a novel experience. Half came with friends, while the other half came boldly alone. All of them said this was their first time speed dating and that they had no expectations. Only one guy did not take kindly to the fact I was a journalist and didn’t want me to ask him any questions, though he later caved. “Whatever. Who’s going to read it anyway?” (Um, thanks.) Despite my nonchalant defenses against rejection, I could still see a look of sheer relief in many of the guys’ eyes when I explained I wasn’t there to speed date, but to report on speed dating. Sigh. On the other hand, Marc ended up faring well— and changed his tune from telling me, “I officially hate you” upon our arrival to, “Wow, my ego was totally stroked tonight.” He managed to score three phone numbers and one woman even called him “beautiful.” Like Marc, everyone seemed to have had an uplifting experience, and I couldn’t help but feel a contact high. I left laughing and loosened up—and dare I say a touch flirtatious (still, as we drove across the Pali, I thought it prudent to name my future cats). Best of all, I found the experience a much more fun substitution for my wear-worn, woe-is-me memory of scattered Sweethearts—and every bit as colorful. ■

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions on page 7
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Being fair and being equal often have much in common— but not necessarily. With certain individuals, identical treatment may result in tremendous unfairness, depending on the situation. Ultimately, the fairest (and most “equal”) way to balance the situation may actually require quite different parameters for each person involved, based on their unique needs and capabilities. Naturally, this is far more complex than an arbitrary system everyone must abide by—but if your goal is truly being fair, acknowledging and respecting the individuals involved, and their strengths, weaknesses, virtues and flaws, is the only way. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Sorting out your conflicts is the best way. You’re not generally one to run from a necessary confrontation; however, there are times when you must recognize that there’s simply nothing to be said—at least not now—that will be heard by the person who most needs to hear it. Once you acknowledge that sad fact, your only recourse (besides needlessly beating your head against a wall) is to extricate yourself from the situation. Consider revisiting it at a later date, of course, when people may be more open-minded and flexible, but for now, just get out. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) “My way or the highway” may work in certain situations, but it won’t work here. Recognize that you don’t have nearly enough leverage to get away with such ultimatums, and making them will almost certainly guarantee the person in question will choose exactly what you hoped they wouldn’t. Once you acknowledge that presenting someone with a no-brainer choice at this juncture means them not choosing you, you may be more willing to see the shades of gray in this previously black and white situation. Instead of drawing a line and making demands, can you rethink your stance and simply try to see the positives, making the best of the scenario as it stands? GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) You’re right that you’re under absolutely no obligation to let someone off the hook. A deal’s a deal, and if they were stupid, overconfident, or blind enough to make it, they ought to see it through, possibly learning a hard lesson in the process. However, the lesson they’re most likely to absorb isn’t the one you think—it’s probably along the lines of: “you’re an asshole.” Feel free to drive home the point that you’re cutting them a break from a dumb decision they made—but cut them the break. Calling in this debt isn’t worth the value of the stuff you’d lose in the process. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Many Cancers go for an “all or nothing” approach to things they’re passionate about. The truth is, few situations fit this paradigm well, and approaching things with a more flexible stance might work out better. For instance, the scenario you’re likely to face soon is one you’re probably not crazy about for the long-term, but rejecting it out of hand isn’t your best bet. Instead, install limitations that you can live with (and consider being more flexible with those than your original inclinations, which are probably unreasonably harsh or unrealistically strict), then go from there. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) The near-obsession of football fans is virtually incomprehensible (or even repugnant) to non-fans. Similarly, some passions you’ll encounter this week are also outside your comfort zone. Don’t give people engaging in them a total pass from your normal and justifiable expectations, but don’t have a hissy fit if they fall short. This may be the equivalent of them putting aside other obligations “because the Super Bowl is on.” Some slack is called for, even if you can’t entirely wrap your head around why it’s necessary. Just give it to them anyway, remembering that what goes around comes around, and a little credit in the bank is a good thing.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) There are plenty of fish in the sea. That’s a comforting phrase when you’ve just been dumped; also keep it in mind whenever you’re dating, or seeking a new business partner, roommate, or friend. Forcing something when there’s no chemistry is a terrible idea; if you’re confident there are many other people out there with whom you’ll be more compatible, you’ll be less likely to make that mistake. Of course, that’s not saying you should hold out for the “perfect” person, who doesn’t actually exist—but saving your time and energy for someone with whom you have at least a tangible initial spark is totally the way to go.
1. C. 2. Captain Ahab (from Herman Melville’s Moby Dick) 3. Bruno Mars; Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Our housecat enjoys sleeping inside all day and going out for presumably wild feline adventures all night. At first, I was reluctant to put him out, especially on cold or rainy nights, until he’d start literally throwing himself at the door. Then I realized that he was living the perfect feline life, and who was I to stand in his way, just because I wouldn’t particularly like to be out and about on such a chilly or damp evening? Are you making my mistake, and applying your own preferences to a situation that has little or nothing to do with you? Are you standing in the way of someone else’s happiness just because it comes from something that couldn’t possibly make you happy? Why? SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Although I admire your hedonistic appreciation of extremes and excess, be aware that gluttony or greed could be your downfall this week, if you’re not careful. Try to passionately enjoy what you already have, rather than seeking or even welcoming more. That path just leads to trouble, and possibly losing some of what you’ve got right now, and ending up with much less overall. What you have is plenty, and while there’s no limit to how much you could appreciate, there is a limit to how much you can actually handle; therefore, piling more on your plate is a bad idea right now. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC.21) One of my favorite things about humanity is how different we can be in how we appreciate the world. I love chocolate, for instance, and part of my mind wonders how anyone could not adore the stuff. And yet, there are many people out there who don’t care for it, or even despise it. Don’t make the mistake of assuming that things you love are universally valued. You may actually be one of the very few who’s learned how to relish them. You’ve found ways to appreciate stuff that hardly anyone does; this week is all about learning to like, or at least being willing to quietly respect, all the stuff that others love and you don’t. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) While humor is excellent for defusing or improving many scenarios, there are some it simply doesn’t have the power to touch. When someone’s just too full of pain or fear to let go and laugh, you have to get them to a better place before such happy medicine can do them much good. This may require truly Capricornian stubbornness and determination—that’s why it’s your job, not someone else’s. Step up to the plate, before anyone else even tries; unless they have your level of resolve, they’ll probably fail, and possibly make things worse. Don’t let that happen. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Imaginary deadlines rarely work as well as real ones with actual consequences. Unless the ones you create carry weight that’ll be enforced by someone other than you, they’re unlikely to really motivate you when you most need it, no matter how excellent your original intentions were. Acknowledge that this is one of those situations; even if you’re able to hold yourself on track for a short time, you’ll need outside influence to stick to this path once your willpower peters out, someone who’ll guide you firmly past your moments of weakness. You know just the person for the job, don’t you? Go enlist them now.
