Coconut Wireless Hawaii Gets Civil “This is a great day for all Hawaii families,” said Jennifer Pizer of Lambda Legal, one of several organizations fighting on the front lines of the state’s protracted civil union battle. Now—after numerous setbacks, false starts and crushing eleventh-hour defeats— gay-rights advocates can celebrate. On February 16 the Senate passed the final version of SB232, which the House approved five days earlier. (Among Maui legislators, only Rep. Joe Souki, a Democrat, and Rep. George Fontaine, a Republican, voted against it). “I have always believed that civil unions respect our diversity, protect people’s privacy and reinforce our core

marital status options. (That’s also the day Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg sat down with Hawaii-born President Obama at a tech pow wow in California.) Whether the two events are related isn’t clear—Facebook hasn’t commented on the change—but there’s no question the law has far-reaching implications.

Trails And Tribulations For more than 70 years, Haleakala Ranch has illegally restricted access to a historically significant trail—and the state has failed to do anything about it. That’s according to a lawsuit filed this week by Public Access Trails Hawaii (PATH) and three Maui residents, including former state

The day after SB232 passed, Facebook added “in a civil union” to its list of marital status options. values of equality and aloha,” said Gov. Abercrombie in a statement released before he signed the bill. “I appreciate all the time and effort invested by those who shared their thoughts and concerns. This has been an emotional process for everyone involved, but that process is now ended.” The other side—a well-organized coalition composed mostly of church groups—surely disagrees, and legal and legislative challenges may follow. For now, however, state-recognized same-sex nuptials can commence, beginning January 2012. In an interesting twist, on February 17— the day after SB232’s passage—Facebook added “in a civil union” to its list of

Representative Joe Bertram. Dave Brown, a founding member of PATH who also serves on the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Na Ala Hele Advisory Council, said the group has been trying “for many years” to get the ranch to allow access to the footpath, which runs through Makawao and Olinda. PATH attorney Tom Pierce said documents “definitively show that first the Kingdom of Hawaii and then later the Territory of Hawaii exerted continuous possession over Haleakala Trail.” And, Pierce argues, the Highways Act of 1892, which protects public roads and trails, “preserves the state’s ownership.”

NEWS BRIEFS

The suit asks the court to declare that the trail is owned by the state and for injunctive relief against Haleakala Ranch.

Major League Mauians Their teams, positions and salaries vary widely, but with the arrival of Spring Training Maui’s three pro baseball players have one important thing in common: each is on a Major League roster. Last season ended in disappointment for St. Anthony grad Shane Victorino, as his Philadelphia Phillies failed in their bid for a third straight World Series appearance. Victorino, 30, did win another Gold Glove for his centerfield play—and enjoyed the fruits of a new contract that will pay him $17 million over the next two years. Plus, the Phillies added All-Star Cliff Lee to an already impressive pitching rotation and enter 2011 as the odds-on favorites to win the National League. Kula-born Kurt Suzuki hit a mediocre .242 for the equally mediocre Oakland A’s, but the 27-year-old catcher has three years and $14 million left on his contract—meaning he’ll be given ample opportunity to bounce back. Meanwhile, relief pitcher Kanekoa Texeira—another Kula boy—signed a one-year deal with the cellar-dwelling Kansas City Royals worth about $400,000. Texeira, 25, made his bigleague debut in 2010 with the Seattle Mariners but was cut loose after posting an unsightly 5.30 ERA in 16 appearances. Exhibition games began this week, and the Phillies, A’s and Royals will play their season openers in late March and early April. The soonest two Maui players could meet (assuming no one changes teams) will be May 6, when Oakland starts a three-game series in Kansas City. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1436c

EH BRAH!

NEWS OF THE WEIRD YOU MIGHT BE A LITTLE REDNECK... Jack Smeltzer broke a record in the tractor pull championships in Columbus, Ohio, in January—doing a “full pull” of 692 pounds. Jack is 7 years old. The National Kiddie Tractor Pullers Association (which holds 80 events a year for ages 3 through 8) uses bicycles instead of motors. Ms. Brooke Wilker, 5, was the youngest champ, lugging 300 pounds 28 feet.

WASH DARN IT Everyone washes hair, but those who want a license to apply shampoo in Texas need 150 hours of training, with 100 hours in “theory and practice,” including a study of “neck anatomy.”

PEDOPHILED AWAY The City Commission of San Antonio, Florida, (population 1,052), passed an ordinance in January restricting, to a tiny portion of town, where registered sex offenders could live. However, San Antonio has only one sex offender, and that man is exempt from the law because he already lives there.

ART APART (1) In January, Toronto sculptor-photographer Lisa Murphy added to her reputation for devising “porn for the blind” by producing four more hand-molded erotic figures out of clay, accompanied by descriptions in Braille. “The butt was the hardest to sculpt,” she said. “I wanted to get it nice and even, and give it a feminine softness so it would actually feel like a woman’s butt.” Her first book, Tactile Mind, with 17 such raised erotic works, sells for $225 (Canadian). (2) Ripley’s Believe It or Not! museum is already home to an artist’s rendition of da Vinci’s

“The Last Supper” made from burned toast, and now comes a recent version by Laura Bell of Roscommon, Michigan, made with clothes-dryer lint. Bell said she did about 800 hours of laundry of various-colored towels to obtain lint of the proper hues, and then worked 200 more hours to construct the 14-foot-long, 4-foot-high mural.

ADMITTEDLY STUPID Rap singer Trevell Coleman, trying to bring “closure” and “get right with God” for having shot a man in 1993 (and never getting caught), confessed to the assault to New York City police in December, hoping that his humility might impress them. Instead, police checked and booked Coleman—for murder. Said Coleman, “For some reason, I really didn’t think that [the victim had] died.”

INCOMPETENT CRIMINALS (1) A female motorist in Kitsap County, Washington, reported in January that she was motioned by another driver to pull over, but ignored him. The man then tried to ratchet up his credibility, motioning her over again but this time holding a hand-scrawled sign reading “sheriff.” (She remained unimpressed.) Seattle Weekly reported that a similar incident occurred several months earlier. (2) Robert Michelson was arrested in Farmington, Connecticut, in February, after calling a 911 operator to inquire about the lawfulness of the marijuana plant he was growing. The operator informed him that it was illegal. (All 911 calls are automatically traced, and Michelson was soon arrested.) ■

This is for the person who left a dirty diaper on my car: It wasn’t carrying it across the parking lot to the trash that I minded (I could have tossed it on the ground, but unlike some I have respect for the ‘aina). It wasn’t even the fact that it was filled with a lot more than shi-shi. No, it was that you also left a nice big poop-stain hood ornament, which by the time I got home had hardened into a disgusting brown crust that had to be power-hosed off. I know being a parent is hectic, but that’s no excuse to make me quite literally put up with your crap. Bag Changes Maui’s plastic-bag ban is less than two months old, meaning the long-range implications aren’t yet clear. One thing that is clear: the fence at the Central Maui Landfill. Gourmet oceanside resort dining—for half p price? Dive in Black Rock Steak and Seafood, Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa 2605 Kaanapali Pkwy., Lahaina Open nightly 5:30-9pm, 661-0031 hen the Sheraton Maui decided to change its restaurant options a few years ago, they took a smart approach: they asked the guests. The consensus was steak and seafood, and in October, 2007 they opened the Black Rock Steak and Seafood Restaurant. Executive Chef Brian Ashlock created the menu, which takes elements of American steakhouse cuisine and pairs them with Pacific Rim. The result is a genuinely infused interpretation of the two. Now, Black Rock is offering 50 percent off for kama‘aina on all food items through March. How good of a deal is it? It means you can order a signature bone-in ribeye for $23, or lobster tail for just $18. The dining room is open-air and elegant; grab a table on the lanai and listen to the waves crashing against Kaanapali beach. Parking is easy; self park in the structure and validate for $1. With more than 75 bottles of wine and about a dozen available by the glass, each section of the menu offers suggested pairings. The starter Black Rock pizza features Maui’s own Surfing Goat Dairy goat cheese along with locally grown veggies and kalamata olives and mac nut pesto. The crab wontons feature a smooth, savory crab mousse interior, crisp wonton crust and a spicy chili jus for dipping. I

e’ve been hearing a lot about belt-tightening lately, but the end of February and beginning of March are a time for all of us to loosen our belts. Beginning this Sunday (February 27), you’ll have a rare opportunity to see the chefs of Ruth’s Chris step out of their usual menu and offer a five-course paired dinner with the exquisite and highly rated Duckhorn wines. Look forward to a Chinese-style snapper with the Migration chardonnay and the New Zealand lamb with the Duckhorn merlot, which wine enthusiasts are raving about. Dinner is $85 per person; call 661-8815 for reservations.

Hold on tight, ’cause the next evening (February 28) marks the Vineyard Dining Series at David Paul’s, a four-course dinner with passed pupus at the reception and

champagne pairings. Chef David always amazes with his creativity and groundbreaking cuisine; a little birdie tells me we might be enjoying oysters with champagne sorbet. Some of the bubbly that will be popped: Tattinger, Nicolas Feuillatte, Vilmart and Piper Hiedseik. The dinner will be hosted by Sommelier Mark Du Mez. Price is $125 per person, but diva discounts will apply. Call 662-3000 to reserve. On Tuesday (March 1), nurse that decadent hangover with free buttermilk pancakes at IHOP to honor Pancake Day. That’s right, free flapjacks all day, 7am-10pm. It’s a charity event, so chip in with a donation to Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children. Last year the event raised $2 million for children’s hospitals nationwide—this year the goal is $2.5 million. - JR

iam Neeson is Dr. Martin Harris, a respected scientist who, while visiting Berlin with his wife (January Jones), awakens from a car accident with a case of amnesia. The more he tries to put the pieces back together, the more it seems like a conspiracy is taking place around him and his identity has been stolen. The first hour is the film’s best, as we wonder if we’re watching a man who had his life snatched from him—or if “Doctor Harris ever existed to begin with. After last year’s crowd-pleasing blockbuster Taken, in which Neeson killed every villain in France with his bare hands, here he is in another flick that’ll make American tourists uneasy about traveling abroad. (Neeson needs to set his next movie

in Great Britain, to complete his xenophobic action trilogy.) Unknown isn’t as sleazy as Taken, but it’s also not as good. The main flaw is the answer to the central puzzle. I won’t reveal—or even hint at—it, except to say it feels like a cheat and undercuts the story’s humanity. So does the predictably explosive

conclusion, which packs a few minor punches but breaks no new ground. Veteran actors Bruno Ganz and Frank Langhella share one great scene but otherwise don’t make much of an impression. Jones, of Mad Men fame, wears the same pouty look throughout and is ill-matched with Neeson; couldn’t they

have gotten a sexy, age-appropriate co-star like Julianne Moore or Joan Allen? Aiden Quinn plays a barely-defined yet adequately hissable villain. Really, though, it’s Neeson’s show all the way. I grew up with Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis as my action heroes and haven’t been crazy about their modern-day replacements—one-note beefcakes like Vin Diesel and Jason Statham who are fine at what they do but don’t appear capable of doing much else. Neeson has the look for this type of movie—he’s tall, quick and disarmingly intimidating. Yet he’s also a very good actor, a guy who’s played everything from Oskar Schindler to sex guru Alfred Kinsey to a Jedi knight and endowed each character with believability, authority and soul. I like the idea of him driving the action franchises of the future—even so-so vehicles like this one. ■To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1436f

Lady Gaga can keep glue-gunning Kermits, but everyone knows Sir Elton John did it first. In fact, no one’s done more for the business of bombastic applique and sequined spectacles than the iconic, ivory-tickling pop star. In addition to donning fabulous duds and cranking out an endless array of timeless tunes, John’s been open about his battles with substance abuse and now provides counsel to addict celebrities (he’s partly responsible for pal Eminem’s recovery). He did cause a bit of a kerfuffle earlier this month when he told Rolling Stone about Billy Joel’s closet alcoholism—after Joel waxed poetic about John, writing in the mag’s 100 Greatest Artists of All Time issue, “Elton kicks my ass on piano... His spontaneous, improvisational playing always challenges me. The piano is a percussion instrument, like a drum. You don’t strum a piano. You beat the shit out of a piano. Elton knows exactly how to do that. But surely the two old friends will patch things up; after all, they were both doing this thing before Gaga was babbling baby talk. If I could communicate with the dead, I’d like to talk to Sammy. Poor Sammy, I was never as good to him as I should have been—especially toward the end of his life, when he was crippled and covered in those benign old dog tumors. And being the bitch that I am, I rushed away to the Mainland (as most local kids do, for a time) without saying goodbye. Soon after, and after 18 years of faithfulness, Sammy died. When my mom called to tell me the news, I was living in a hip part of town just outside the heart of Kansas City, between two major roadways to the city center. As mom and I cried across cell lines, a coyote (highly unusual) came galloping down the street—and straight up onto the porch where I sat. It panted, blinked and ran off on its merry way. I was, naturally, convinced this was a “sign from Sammy. OK. That’s not the best example of a paranormal encounter, but it’s all I’ve got. If you want to connect with a loved one who’s passed on—and conjure a chicken-skin story of your own— famous psychic medium John Edward (in town this Saturday) claims he can help. Edward has authored several books on psychics and spirituality including Crossing Over and Practical Praying. So there’s only one question left—who you gonna call? 877-688-4800

Go Black (And White) Saturday (February 26), 5-10pm, Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center, Makawao, $175

Rap-Reggae Remix Sunday (February 27), 5pm door / 6:30pm show, Yokouchi Pavillion, MACC, $39.50 advance / $44.50 door

My relationship with art and fashion is complicated. They’ve both issued TROs on me, but I’m sure we’ll work it out. It was pretty tough when they found out about each other, and sure, they don’t take my calls anymore—but obsession will find a way. Personal stuff aside, how can you not want to attend something that encourages a fashion theme and supports the arts? The community-based, nonprofit Hui No‘eau Visual Arts Center provides the community with programs that encourage lifelong love of the arts. Their services are accessible to anyone, regardless of ability to pay or artistic aptitude. In theory, a broke, talentless schmuck (i.e. me), could walk in and learn how to make great art—or at least how to appreciate it. The 19th annual Art Affair event, the Black and White Ball, will be filled with live music and dancing, gourmet dinner, a silent auction and the chance to schmooze with the rest of Maui’s local arts community—and most of all to support local art. So art and fashion, if you’re reading this…call me? Please? Huinoeau.com, 572-6560 [Ynez Tongson]

Maui plays host to its share of reggae and hip-hop concerts (more often reggae). But it isn’t often the two genres blend. So reggae fans and rap aficionados alike should be excited for this weekend’s Nas and Damian Marley show. The “Distant Relatives” Hawaii tour—sponsored by the BAMP Project—marks the first time the duo will perform together in the islands. “Distant Relatives” is unique among American- Jamaican artist collaborations in that Nas and Marley completed an entire album together. (To download one of the the album’s songs for free, visit distantrelatives.com.) It’s a daring feat to mix two distinct styles, but if anyone can do it, it’s these acclaimed artists. Marley was the first reggae musician to win a Grammy outside of the reggae category, while Nas has sold over 20 million records. Tickets are available through the MACC’s box office, Green Banana Cafe (Paia), Old Lahaina Book Emporium (Front Street, Lahaina) and Requests (Wailuku). (For a chance to win tickets to this show, visit mauitime.com/contests.) 242-7469; mauiarts.org [Anna Such]

Sign Language PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) The games people play can be fun, if you’re good at them, and in the mood. Of course, it’s refreshing to be able to cut through all the bullshit and get down to brass tacks, but if someone is in a more playful, circumspect mood, this strategy could just scare them right off. So much of life and connecting with another person is about timing, and part of that is where you’re at in your lives. If you want to play games and have that kind of fun, go for it—but try to find someone else who’s in that place with you, or one of you is bound to get hurt. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Appending “in bed” to every fortune cookie fortune makes it better. Adding “yet” to most of your negative statements will similarly improve your life. It creates an opening for change. Even your most jokingly self-derogatory comments can benefit. “I haven’t been able to find a job… yet” opens up the issue and creates, in a very tangible way, possibilities that wouldn’t feel as likely without the “yet.” It’s a subtle way to reorder your mind to manifest better stuff for yourself. Try it this week, every time you express something negative. It might not work universally, but I think you’ll be pleased with the overall benefit. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Everyone deserves a second chance—but maybe not right away. Sometimes your judgment is simply spot on, and giving someone any more rope will just make them hang themselves, or you. People can change—but rarely overnight. Keep your mind open to a second chance, sure, but reserve such an opportunity for somewhere further down the line, when it’s more likely it’ll be worthwhile. For now, if they come knocking, keep the door closed. If and when it’s time to open it again—and I honestly hope you don’t rule out the possibility—you’ll know. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Anyone whose wish has been granted soon discovers that wishes usually come with stuff you never anticipated—and perhaps don’t even like. Of course, it’s hard to guess at what will come along with the dream guy/gal, the power, the fame, the success, or whatever else you fantasized about. But glossing over the potential details as thoroughly as you have pretty much guarantees you some unpleasant surprises should your wish ever come true. This week take a harder look at the wishes that seem closest to fruition, and this time include all the details you didn’t bother examining earlier. Some of them could be dealbreakers—and wouldn’t it better that you figured that out now before you had to actually live with them? CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Blurred boundaries are something of a Cancerian specialty. Of course, while some people might appreciate that your relationship requires no specific definition or rules, others may feel extremely threatened by the fact that you’re perfectly willing to disregard lines that have been drawn if crossing them simply “feels right.” It’s sometimes a difficult lesson for you Crabs to learn to respect those limitations, because your line-crossing and rule-breaking is usually fueled by the best and most compassionate intentions. However, learn it you must, and if you haven’t mastered it by this week, you’re likely to get some painful instruction on the matter. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Leos at their best are radiant, generous, loving, warm, enthusiastic, intuitive leaders, and fun to be around. At their worst, they’re bossy, controlling, selfish, lazy, and insensitive. Don’t let your ego be too bruised by such uncompromising truth—unless it’ll fuel personal change! Relearning such bad habits is quite difficult, and requires tremendous persistence. Nevertheless, your personal evolution depends on learning to recognize and minimize those negative tendencies while strengthening and amplifying your positive qualities. Since this week’s events are likely to put them in stark contrast with each other, it’s an opportune time to practice exactly that.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Virgos are rarely snobbish—so you might not recognize the signs when you do lean that way. This week you need to confront the truth that there’s a part of you that turns your nose up at interacting with certain people, for whatever (probably unconscious) reason. That’s not to say you need to completely overturn your unspoken judgments and make time to hang out with said people; in fact, your opinions may be spot on. However, recognizing them, and being truthful with yourself about what you think and why you think it are good ways to determine whether you’re being discerning, or just prudish—an important distinction this week.

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions on page 7 1. C. 2. Your head; hat band 3. Hosini Mubarak of Egypt (with President George W. Bush); Zine El Abidine Ben Ali of Tunisia (with Secretary of State Colin Powell)

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) I prefer warm weather. However, that doesn’t mean that whenever it’s not warm, I automatically get down, annoyed, or out of sorts. Actually, I’ve learned to appreciate cold or wet weather, not just for the variety, but also because it makes me appreciate the sunny, beautiful days that much more. For someone who’s supposed to be able to value multiple perspectives, you’re awfully black and white about certain things. You might be happier if you could find a way to appreciate even the stuff you’re not entirely crazy about. Such a talent could prove very valuable this week. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) For every person who’s down on you because you’re a Scorpio, there are two who are likely to be intensely into you for the same reason (although some of these might not know it yet). You’ve got a rare and special quality that tends to elicit fairly extreme reactions in the people around you. Although that may occasionally feel like a curse, recognize that most of the time it’s an amazing blessing. Of course, you can’t control who’s obsessed and who’s repulsed—something that may lead to feeling more doomed than lucky this week; all the more reason you should keep the big picture (and your ultimately blessed state) in mind. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC.21) Although we’ve been programmed with a certain set of social rules and expectations, one of your great gifts is being able to consciously and intelligently toss those rules out the window when they simply don’t make sense for the scenario at hand. This could be one of those times. Such great power, naturally, comes with corresponding responsibility: Other people might need some encouragement—or even a form of permission—to follow their hearts, and you may very well be the only one equipped or willing to give it to them. Come through for those poor people, won’t you? CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Misery loves company, but that doesn’t mean it has to be you. When someone tries to drag you into the crappy place they’re in, it’s time to employ that infamous Capricornian stubbornness, dig in your heels, and refuse to go along. You can choose to walk away, or pull them out of their funk, but rest assured that nothing particularly good will come of you getting down in the trenches with the down and out right now. That doesn’t mean you can’t have compassion for them—just that it shouldn’t slip over into commiseration or pity. Drag them up, walk away, whatever—just don’t let them trip you up or push you down. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Some messages you have to spell out explicitly. Others can be effectively conveyed with a look, a touch, or a gesture, and articulating them at length would only water them down, or even negate them completely. Therefore, don’t. Words are like fire: a little bit is cozy and comforting, but too much and you’ll burn the place down. You’re already pretty outspoken, so try to keep quiet for once, and practice communicating in other, less flammable and ultimately more wonderful ways. By the end of the week you should be an expert in this department—or you might be shopping for replacements for everything you burnt to cinders.
