H

e didn’t overcome a debilitating stutter or take on Hitler (or win a boatload of Oscars) but Mayor Alan Arakawa did deliver the most important speech of his belated second term last week. Appropriately, Arakawa Version 2.0’s first State of the County address struck a somber tone. “Our government no longer has the money to be all things to all people,” the Mayor said. He talked about residents losing their homes because they couldn’t pay the mortgage. He talked about small businesses sinking into debt

saving as much money as was once thought” because of the overtime expenditures needed to make up for lost productivity. Echoing comments he made during the campaign, Arakawa pledged to streamline the permitting process and make it easier for businesses to open and expand. He also promised to bring back Taste of Lahaina and Halloween on Front Street, two once-lucrative West side events that have languished or disappeared altogether. And he got behind a proposal currently floating on Oahu to build a permanent film studio on Maui. On the environmental side, Arakawa said

Appropriately, Arakawa Version 2.0’s first State of the County address struck a somber tone. to stay afloat. He talked about crumbling infrastructure, and about how Mauians will soon be paying more for electricity, water and other essential services. He talked about the swelling cost of employee benefits and pensions. He even threw a wet blanket on the much-trumpeted uptick in visitor arrivals, which he said is offset by deeply discounted room rates that cut into hotels’ profits and reduce their ability and willingness to hire workers and juice the economy. “So yes, things seem bleak for Maui County right now,” Arakawa said rather anticlimactically. “But it is always darkest before the dawn.” The first bit of good news, for County employees at least, is that Arakawa wants to end furloughs, which he said “are not

solar panels will soon be installed on County buildings and that this year will mark the launch of a curbside recycling service in Maui Meadows, with plans to expand countywide “as soon as possible.” Finally he talked about water, his foundational issue. “I can give out water meters right now, but not in any sort of way that would be fair to all the people waiting on the Upcountry water meter list,” he said. Instead, he said the County will determine the cost of upgrading the system so that “we can figure out how to get water to people who need it, and in what amount.” “Maui has the water,” he added. “Now we need the method.” After that it was an Albert Einstein quote (“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for the future”) and a vow

Recognition For Native Hawaiians?

I

f the Akaka Bill ever had its moment, it was when the Democrats controlled Congress and a Hawaii-born President sat in the White House. That moment has passed—for now at least—and the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization Act is no closer to passage than it was a decade ago. Does that mean the idea of giving Native Hawaiians official recognition—and a seat at the table—is dead? Not necessarily. Two bills currently moving through the state legislature would establish a Native Hawaiian commission “to prepare, maintain and certify a roll of qualified Native Hawaiian constituents,” with the ultimate aim of forming a governing body that could negotiate with the state over issues like ceded lands. The Office of Hawaiian Affairs offered tentative support for the bills, provided they don’t “diminish efforts to pursue and obtain federal recognition.” Meanwhile, as with the Akaka bill, some opposition is coming from within the Naive Hawaiian community. “The U.S. is an interloper, a usurper, a kidnapper, an occupier, a pirate,” wrote sovereignty advocate Leon Siu in testimony to the Senate Ways and Means Committee. “The proper remedy to the crime of piracy is to set the captured free; not to further subject them to deeper captivity under a ridiculous ‘indigenous’ governing entity.” If that’s your stance, there isn’t much more to say. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1437c

NEWS OF THE WEIRD THEY HAD BETTER IMMIGRATION POLICY, TOO Tombstone, Arizona, which was the site of the legendary 1881 Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, is about 70 miles from the Tucson shopping center where a U.S. congresswoman, a federal judge and others were shot in January. A Los Angeles Times dispatch later that month noted that the “Wild West” of 1881 Tombstone had far stricter gun control than present-day Arizona. The historic gunfight occurred when the marshal (Virgil Earp, brother of Wyatt) tried to enforce the town’s no-carry law against local thugs. Today, however, with few restrictions and no licenses required, virtually any Arizonan 18 or older can carry a handgun openly, and those 21 or older can carry one concealed.

FAT CHANCE Paul Mason, 50, an ex-letter-carrier in Ipswich, England, told reporters in January he would file a lawsuit against Britain’s National Health Service for negligence— because it allowed him to “grow” in recent years to a weight of nearly 900 pounds. Mason said he “begged” for NHS’s help in 1996 when he weighed 420, but was merely told to “ride [his] bike more.” Last year, he was finally allowed gastric surgery, which reduced him to his current 518. At his heaviest, Mason estimates he was consuming 20,000 calories a day.

BLACK MAGIC, RED TAPE The government of Romania, attempting both to make amends for historical persecution of fortune-telling “witches” and to collect more tax revenue, amended its labor law recently to legalize the profession. However, “queen witch” Bratara Buzea, apparently speaking for many in the soothsaying business, told the Associated Press in February that official recognition might make witches legally responsible for events beyond their control. Already, witches are said to be fighting back with curses—hurling poisonous mandrake plants into the Danube River and casting a special spell involving cat dung and a dead dog.

HE ALMOST HAD TO ‘TENDER’ HIS RESIGNATION

In November, a Taiwanese factory owner accidentally dropped 200 $1,000 bills (worth about $6,600 in U.S. dollars) into an industrial shredder, turning them into confetti. Luckily, Taiwan’s Justice Ministry employs a forensic handwriting analyst who excels at jigsaw puzzles on the side. Ms. Liu Hui-fen worked almost around the clock for seven days to piece together the 75 percent of each bill sufficient to make them legally exchangeable.

SORRY EXCUSES (1) British loyalist Michael Stone still claims it was all a misunderstanding—that he did not intend to assassinate Irish Republican Army political leaders in 2006, despite being arrested at the Northern Ireland legislature carrying knives, an ax, a garotte and a bag of explosives that included flammable liquids, gas canisters and fuses. He was later convicted, based on his having detonated one explosive in the foyer and then carrying the other devices into the hall to confront the leaders, but he continued to insist that he was merely engaged in “performance art.” (2) Thomas Walkley, a lawyer from Norton, Ohio, was charged in January with indecent exposure for pulling his pants down in front of two 19-year-old males, but Walkley claimed he was merely “mentoring” at-risk boys. He said he’s used the technique with other troubled youths, especially the most difficult cases, by getting them “to think differently.” Added Walkley, “Radical times call for radical measures.” (3) Phyllis Stevens, 59, said she had no idea she had embezzled nearly $6 million until her employer, Aviva USA, of Des Moines, Iowa, showed her the evidence. She said it must have been done by the “hundreds” of personalities created by her dissociative identity disorder (including “Robin,” who was caught trying to spend Stevens’s remaining money in Las Vegas just hours after the showdown with Aviva). Stevens and her spouse had been spending lavishly, buying properties and contributing generously to political causes. As the “core person,” Stevens said she will accept responsibility but asked a federal judge for leniency. The prosecutor said Stevens is simply a thief. ■

This is for the three separate guys who asked me—in the span of less than an hour—if I was pregnant. It was, admittedly, my bloated time of the month. And yeah, my gym membership is more like a donation since all I get out of it is guilt. But really, it’s an iron-clad rule: don’t ask a woman that question. Ever. I don’t care if her stomach looks like an overinflated beach ball, her ankles look like tree trunks and she’s got amniotic fluid running down her leg. Just keep your damn mouth shut. OK? YOU SAY YOU

WANT A

REVOLUTION? THE PROBLEMS THAT TRIGGERED THE UPRISINGS IN NORTH AFRICA

EXIST AROUND THE WORLD—INCLUDING RIGHT HERE AT HOME

8

MARCH 3, 2011

rom the British newspaper The Independent: “Like in many other countries in the region, protesters in Egypt complain about surging prices, unemployment and the authorities’ reliance on heavyhanded security to keep dissenting voices quiet.” Sound familiar? Coverage by U.S. state-controlled media of the revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and the rest of the region is too dim by half: they say it’s an Arab thing. So it is. But not for long. The problems that triggered the latest uprisings—rising inequality of income, frozen credit markets and unresponsive government—span the globe. To be sure, the first past-due regimes to be overthrown may be the most brutal U.S. client states—places like Yemen, Jordan and Algeria. Central Asia’s autocrats, also corrupted by the U.S., can’t be far behind; Uzbekistan’s Islam Karimov, who likes to boil his dissidents to death, would be my first bet. But this won’t stop in Asia. Persistent unemployment and repressive governments exist in Europe and, yes, here in the U.S. They are unstable. The pressure is building. Is global revolution imminent?

F

class—undermining the foundation of political stability in post-feudal societies. In the former First World, industry was supplanted by the knowledge economy. Rather than bring the global economy in for a soft landing after the collapse of industrial capitalism by using the rising information sector to spread wealth, the ruling classes chose to do what they always do: they exploited the situation for short-term gain, grabbing whatever they could for themselves. During the ’70s and ’80s they broke the unions. (Which is one reason average family income has steadily declined since 1968.) They gouged consumers in the ’90s and ’00s. Now their credit cards are maxed out—and the banks are looting the government. Now that the bill is due, they want us to pay. But we can’t. We won’t. It’s bad enough during a cyclical recession, when millions of Americans are losing their jobs and getting evicted from their homes. When the government’s response to an economic holocaust is not to help these poor people, but instead to dole out hundreds of billions of dollars to the giant banks and insurance companies causing the firings and carrying out the foreclosures, it’s crazy. And when the media tells the one in four adults who is “structurally” (i.e. permanently) unemployed that he or she doesn’t exist—the recession is over! recovery is underway!—it’s obvious that the U.S. is cruising for revolution. Not the Tea Party kind, with corny flags and silly hats, but something real and long overdue.

T

ate last year I wrote a book, The AntiAmerican Manifesto, which calls for Americans to revolt against our outof-control plutocracy and the corrupt political hierarchy that props it up. I expected the right wing to react with outrage. To the contrary. While the desire for revolution is hardly universal among Americans, it is widespread and distributed across the political spectrum. Revolution, when it occurs here, will be surprisingly popular. Criticism of my Manifesto centers not on its thesis that the status quo is unsustainable and ought to go, but on my departure from traditional Marxist doctrine. Old-school lefties say you can’t (or shouldn’t) have

he first great wave of revolutions from 1793 through 1848 was a response to the decline of feudal agrarianism. (Like progressive historians, I don’t consider the 1775-1781 war of American independence to be a true revolution. Because it didn’t result in a radical reshuffling of classes, it was little more than a bunch of rich tax cheats getting theirs.) During the 19th century European elites saw the rise of industrial capitalism as a chance to stack the cards in their favor, paying slave wages for backbreaking work. Workers organized and formed a proletariat that rejected this lopsided arrangement. They rose up. They formed unions. By the middle of the 20th century, a rough equilibrium had been established between labor and management in the U.S. and other industrialized nations. Three generations of autoworkers earned enough to send their children to college. Now Detroit is a ghost town. The uprisings we are witnessing today have their roots in the decline of industrial production that began 60 years ago. As in the early 1800s the economic order has been reorganized. Ports, factories and the stores that serviced them have shut down. Thanks to globalization, industrial production has been deprofessionalized, shrunken and outsourced to the impoverished Third World. The result, in Western countries, is a hollowed-out middle

L

When revolution comes, it will follow a spontaneous explosion of long pent-up social and economic forces. We will not need the old parties and groups to lead us. revolution without first building a broadbased popular revolutionary movement. “We are still in a time and place where we can and should be doing more to build popular movements that can liberate people’s consciousnesses and win reforms necessary to lay the foundation for a transformed society without it being soaked in blood,” Michael McGehee wrote in Z Magazine. “All this talk about throwing bricks and Molotov cocktails is extremely premature and reckless.” Maybe that used to be true. I think things have changed. Given the demoralized state of dissent in the United States since the 1960s and the co-opting of radical activists by the cult of militant pacifism, it would be impossible to create such an organization. As I argue in the book, anyone who participates in the “official left” as it exists today—the MoveOns, Michael Moores, Green Party, etc.—is inherently discredited in the current, rapidly radicalizing political environment. Old-fashioned liberals can’t really help, they can’t really fight, not if they want to maintain their pathetic positions—so they don’t really try. America’s future revolutionaries—the newly homeless, the illegally dispossessed, people bankrupted by the health care industry—can only view the impotent “progressive” movement with contempt. Revolution will come. When it does, as it did in Tunisia and Egypt, it will follow a spontaneous explosion of long pent-up social and economic forces. We will not need the old parties and groups to lead us. Which is good, because they aren’t psychologically conditioned to create

revolution or midwife it when it occurs. New formations will emerge from the chaos. They will create the new order. Old-fashioned ideologies are obsolete. Left, right, whoever must and will form alliances of convenience to overthrow the existing regime. The leftist critic Ernesto Aguilar is typical of those who take issue with me, complaining that “merging groups with different political goals around an agenda that does not speak openly to those goals, or worse no politics at all, is bound for failure.” The revolutions in North Africa may well be destined for failure—but it doesn’t look that way now. So far those popular insurrections have played out exactly the way I predict it will, and must, here in the United States: set off by unpredictable events, formed by the people themselves, as the result of spontaneous passion rather than organized mobilization. In Egypt, an ad hoc coalition composed of ideologically disparate groups (the Muslim Brotherhood, secular parties, independent intellectuals), has coalesced around Mohamed ElBaradei. “Here you will see extremists, moderates, Christians, Muslims, all kinds of people. It is the first time that we are all together since the revolution of Saad Zaghloul,” a rebel named Naguib, referring to the leader of the 1919 revolution against the British, told Agence France-Press. ElBaradei’s popularity, said Tewfik Aclimandos of the College de France, is due to the fact that “he is not compromised by the regime; he has integrity.” This is how it will go in Greece, Portugal, England and—someday—here. There is no need to organize or plan. Scheming won’t make any difference. Just get ready to recognize revolution when it occurs, then drop what you’re doing and organize. What will set off the next American Revolution? I don’t know. Nevertheless, the liberation of the longoppressed peoples of the United States, and the citizens of nations victimized by its foreign policy, is inevitable. ■

ard Rock Cafe recently celebrated a quarter-century on Maui, but they aren’t resting on their laurels. The most recent addition to their dining room is a drum kit and band equipment that sits on stage ready for action. Almost every night you’ll find live music and at least one national show a month, like English Beat on March 5 (see A&E, page 15). What about the food? Well, Hard Rock just rolled out a new menu—with a health-conscious twist. Basically, they’re taking their bar food to the next level, and upscaling the entrees. What hasn’t changed is the flair and fun surrounding the cafe—memorabilia abounds, and rock music and rock videos feed your ears and eyes. Plus, most of the servers appear to be rock stars themselves; it’s one of the only places that welcomes mohawks, green hair and tattoos. The new grilled chicken marsala was so good, my husband abandoned the sandwich I ordered for him. The chicken breast is tender and full of flavor from the sauteed portobello and button mushrooms and generously portioned marsala wine sauce. And the ratatouille was delicious enough to fool hubby into eating all his veggies. The veggie sandwich is a new take on no meat with your bread. They use fresh La Brea bakery ciabatta and add made-in-house roasted garlic spread. It’s then stuffed with a lot of roasted veggies, and I mean a lot: red pepper, portobello,, yyellow squash, p pp , p q , zucchini,, grilled red onion,

lettuce and tomato, plus balsamic dressing. For full ull veg effect, it’s served with th a side salad. Their new salad is thee anti-Cobb, an original Hard Rock design. “Ninety percent of the veggies are sourced from local growers,” says general manager Kevin Martinez. “All of the fresh herbs are grown locally [plus] some of the squash, lettuce, pineapples and strawberries.” The anti-Cobb is a largeportion,

The Beat Goes On

Iconic British band is coming back to Maui to play—and look down shirts The English Beat Saturday (March 5), 9pm, Hard Rock Cafe, Lahaina, $34 Tickets available at the Hard Rock or groovetickets.com; opening act Kit Kat Club cabaret, 21+

I

n 1978, amidst economic downturn and subsequent social upheaval, The Beat was born in the British borough of Birmingham. Wrought with massive industrial decline and caught in the middle of the Cold War, the sociopolitical landscape indelibly informed the group’s style, forging a composite of lyrical realism-meets-positivism set to infectious, genre-bending dance music. “We were living in a lot of nuclear fear at the time, with the standoff between America and Russia,” says Beat frontman Dave Wakeling. “I think that’s where the urge to play music came out of.”

Their music instantly resonated with audiences. “We were trying to uplift our own hearts while watching the stuff that was going on,” Wakeling says. “Books were being written about the start of World War III. We were just waiting for it to happen, you know? So that’s how we grew up, and that’s what we started writing songs about. It gave us a kind of graveyard humor— Apocolypso, we called it. We thought, if we’re all going out, we’re going out with one big, last dance.” And dance they did. The Beat—known as The English Beat in the U.S. for legal reasons—etched themselves in the annals of pop rock history with chart toppers like “Mirror in the Bathroom” and “Save it for

Later” and international tours with the likes of The Clash, Talking Heads and David Bowie. Whereas genres are far less finite today, in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s cross-genre fusion was still considered avant-garde. “We were looking for the perfect black rose of dance music,” Wakeling says of hybridizing pop, ska, soul, punk and reggae. “We wanted to come up with a universal beat that reflected the hopes and aspirations of everybody, but also contained a little bit of the threat, grit and dirt of the city that we’d grown up in. Although life is tragic, beauty can be found in it. A lot of people think of ska and reggae as having a happy beat, but in many ways it’s a beat of survival. It gives you the opportunity to sing about everyday woes in an optimistic, ironic, tongue in cheek sort of way.” Continuing to channel their ideas and energy, The Beat went on to become notable proponents of the UK’s Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. Wakeling later spent five years working full time for Greenpeace (after fronting another

legendary group, General Public). “You often get a lot of attention being in a pop group, and some of it is absolutely worthless,” Wakeling chortles. “Because you are Mozart, just misunderstood. Especially if you have a hit record, you get so much media it gets silly. It’s nice to share some of that with a cause that’s near to your heart. “If there was any chance to make a difference, the only way we could do it was by trying to cheer people up by appealing to what we all have in common,” he continues. “And if there’s a chance of us getting through this life with any sense of joy and decency, then we need to get together in a way where we can have an ironic laugh about the plight we face as human beings, rolling

through our decades and evolving through the various governments who promise to help us on our way. You try your best. You try to cause harm as little as you can along the way and you try to offer as much help as you can along the way, and just pray to whatever gods may or may not exist that the same will be done to you.” Wakeling calls today a “fascinating time to be a troubadour.” He acknowledges things are tough, but says that without “community and compassion, we’re all fucked, basically—and not in the pleasurable way. But if we have a sense of both of those things, then we all have a fighting chance—without having to do the fighting.” Speaking of fighting, if you were in attendance at The English Beat’s last Maui performance in December 2009, you might remember security’s shakedown on dancing. “We have a very exuberant crowd, but it’s a very positive crowd, so no one ever gets hurt,” says Wakeling. “But a few people tried to dance on stage as they do quite often at

our shows, and it got a bit panicky. When there’s beautiful people jumping on stage and dancing, singing along with the words, it’s a bit hard to explain to security that you don’t really want them dragged off backwards. So it caused a ripple in the vibes. We were sorry for any misunderstanding. It turned out to be a beautifully spirited performance and if people more expect that sort of thing, everyone will have a really great time. When everyone is dancing in step, that’s the start and the real magic. It’s Jung’s sense of mass consciousness in action, with a smile—and I get to look down their shirts whilst they’re doing it.” ■

CUT/COPY

Zonoscope (Modular; 2011). Cut/Copy has done it again. The Melbourne, Australia trio’s third album delivers spacious, synth-laden dance tracks infused with the best elements of rock. These guys still play their instruments (they toured with Franz Ferdinand in 2005), but they aren’t afraid to let the electronics dominate certain songs. Like their last two albums, Zonoscope is bursting with toe-tapping pop tunes reminiscent of New Order and the Pet Shop Boys—but it’s also apparent that Cut/ Copy is evolving. The tracks here are longer, layered and, at times, more experimental. The opening number, “Need You Now,” melds tambourines and tropical percussion with a chorus that is solid gold. “This Is All We Got” features their signature, seamless mixture of clanging guitars, intriguing samples and loops and soaring synths. Highly recommended for fans and first-time listeners alike. - Ben Lowenthal All albums reviewed in this space are available at Maui’s only record store, Requests (10 N. Fun-loving hip-hop duo take their class clown act to the stage Phys. Ed. Rentals’ CD release show Friday, March 4 Wailuku First Friday, 7pm in the MauiTime courtyard, 33 N. Market Street, Wailuku

ake a healthy dose of Red Hot Chili Peppers circa 1989, chase it down with a bottle of Beastie Boys circa 1987 and dress it in a pitstained high school P.E. uniform, and you get Maui’s newest (and “Most Likely to Cut Class”) hip-hop/punk/funk fusion band, Phys. Ed. Rentals, set to celebrate the release of their debut album at Wailuku First Friday. Founded in 2009 by Lahaina-based multi-instrumentalist duo Trevor Arnholt and Aydin Say, Phys. Ed. Rentals takes a decidedly “scholarly” approach to their lyrics and themes, each song painting a picture of the class-clown, fresh-mouthed troublemakers you knew and loved (and possibly were) during your high school days. “Anyone that’s gone through the trials and tribulations of high school can relate to our music,” says Arnholt. Say says stylistically they’re “unearthing the class of 1991

These guys aren’t freshmen when it comes to music, either. Both are highly skilled “adult” musicians who play every instrument featured on their recordings and then some. (They invite drummer Adam Moor to the stage and the occasional guest singer during their live shows.) Their irreverent, sometimes downright filthy— and often silly—rhymes are more than balanced by a funky bass line, a killer horn section and groovy beats. Quite the interesting bird, Arnholt hails from Ohio (“the kazoo capital of the world,” he says) and recalls being driven to jazz ensemble, marching band and pep band by his grandma as a kid. He collects instruments, and claims he learned to play music during an alien abduction. Say, meanwhile, played/marched in the Rose Bowl parade and played music in bars to support himself through college in Kentucky. Their paths collided on Maui during a music festival in Kula in 2005 and they’ve been playing together ever since. Friday night’s show celebrates Phys. Ed. Rentals’ debut full-length release, There is No ‘I’ in Rentals (available at Requests and on iTunes), which boasts an ambitious 26 individual tracks. The album runs the gamut of “bad kid” high school experiences, from songs titled “Detention” and “Food Fight” to topics like misbehaving in gym class (“Go Run Laps”), sharing a carton of “Chocolate Milk” and cutting class (“Truancy”). Add sound effects like a ringing bell, ticking clock and disguised voices mocking reprimanding teachers and the album is a truly fun, nostalgic listen. The duo’s live

performances add more to the equation, with Arholt and Say alternating between the early-’90s “unplugged” style performance and showcases of their homemade madcap videos projected behind them. Until now they’ve performed mostly at small underground events and private shows inside their roomy recording studio in Lahaina (known by locals as “The Fuzz Box”). That makes First Friday—which has grown into a bustling block party—a coming-out of sorts. “It’s our goal to make sure everyone is just leaving with a big-ass smile on their face,” explains Say. Refreshingly (and not surprisingly), the guys don’t take themselves too seriously.

“We have a lot of fun writing music,” says Say, “and take great pride in our own stupidity.” ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1437 ae2

time capsule 20 years later.” They refer to their sound as “sophomore rock,” and Arnholt explains that this means the characters they portray in their songs are “the kids that have the bragging rights over the freshmen but aren’t cool enough to have their driver’s license yet.”

New York senatorial candidate (Matt Damon) meets the woman of his dreams (Emily Blunt) and is willing to throw away everything to be with her. One problem: The Adjustors, sharply dressed and usually invisible figures who control the outcome of, well, everything. In this case, their mission is to keep the two love birds apart. The Adjustment Bureau poses an interesting, age-old question: given the choice between a perfect plan for your life and an unknown but enticing fate, which would you pick? The screenplay is based on Adjustment Team, a short story by the late, great Philip K. Here, we’re

can telepathically manipulate objects but are unable to outrun Matt Damon. Then again, no one can catch Jason Bourne. Originally scheduled to open last

summer, this quirky, low-key and at times funny thriller is a rarity—a love story with ideas. There are chase scenes, particularly during the exciting climax, but this isn’t an action movie. The special effects are topnotch, but this isn’t another 3D f/x fest. And, while the story is preposterous, with a little suspension of disbelief the movie offers plenty of food for thought. Characters are surrounded by vast empty spaces, emphasizing the choices that envelop them. Most importantly, Damon and Blunt have a touching chemistry; their dialogue and scenes together have a playfulness and comic bite that feels almost improvised. You genuinely want them to end up together. The trailer makes this look like an elaborate brain-teaser on the scale of Inception. If that’s what you’re after, you’ll be disappointed. If, on the other hand, you go in expecting a down-to-earth character study, a sci-fi romance with heart to balance the silliness, you’ll have made the right choice. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1437f

DIVERSIONS, DALLIANCES & DATES

Head First Friday (March 4), 6-8:30pm, Market, Main and Vineyard St., Wailuku, free

ho needs talismans like rabbits’ feet and four-leaf clovers when good fortune is all around us? As if our daily bread isn’t proof enough, we’ve got events like Wailuku First Friday to remind us just how lucky we are. After all, we live in a cosmopolitan community steeped in small-town charm, on an isle known (and envied) the world over. Maybe that’s why thousands can throng quaint Market Street, delightfully without incident, to share in naught but wholesome awesomeness. There’s always lots to look forward to at any WFF, and March’s installment is no exception. King Kekaulike High School’s Robotics Team will present a rock ‘em sock ‘em demo of their work, and as for ear candy, Super Dub Tribe conquers Maui Thing’s main stage, Phys. Ed. Rentals (see A&E, page 17) co-opts the MauiTime courtyard, Visibly Shaken stirs things up at the Main Street Promenade, Maui Blues Band gets busy at the Banyan Tree Park, and mainstays Gene and Shea Argel assume their crooner’s nest outside Cafe O’Lei. Or, take to the mic yourself at the original Aloha Poetry Slam at Gallerie Ha (8pm). Plus, Maui OnStage’s “Meow Mix” celebration features a sneak peek of the musical Cats (ahead of its March 11 opening), an agile performance by the Kit Kat Club (also, check them out as the local opening act for English Beat; see A&E, page 15 for more), and feline-centric songs by Randal Rospond, Cassandra Wormser, Genie Calagna and Michael Pulliam. A benefit for Maui OnStage and Maui Humane Society, admission to the Iao Theater is just $5, or free with a donation of Kirkland-brand cat food. There are three performance times to suit your personal festival schedule (7, 8, and 9pm), and it’s the only opportunity you’ll have to purchase ticket specials like box seats or their “adopt a cat” package (i.e. photo opp with the cast member of your choice, not a new four-legged addition to the ‘ohana). 878-1888; facebook.com/wailukufirstfriday

Girls Just Want to Have Fun

Beat Generation Friday (March 4), 9pm, Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon, Paia, $15 advance / $20 door

The truth is I’m not a big clubber—unless, of course, it comes in the form of a sandwich. But baile funk DJ Sabo might have me changing my mind. Instead of the same old techno baseline (you know what I’m talking about… unntss unntss unntss), Sabo uses rich, sensual Brazilian and Latin influences, making his music perfect for gettin’ your groove on. (And hey, if you can find someone to get your groove on with, even better! But I digress.) Sabo is a substantial globetrotter and has garnered praise worldwide, having performed in France, Spain and at the Huffington Post’s Presidential Inaugural Ball. Incredibly talented, Sabo has shared the stage with will.i.am, Sheryl Crow, Sting and The Brazilian Girls. He’s pretty much a big deal. And this weekend, he’ll be on Maui. So go on and march forth to buy your advance tickets now, available at Wine Corner (Paia), Requests (Wailuku) and Wok Star (Lahaina). 579-9413; tinyurl.com/mardigras808 [Ynez Tongson]

ALL AGES NO COVER

Sunday (March 6), 8:30am-1pm, Kaanapali Beach Hotel, $22 keiki (kodomo) 6-to 12 years old / $36.95 adults

If you’ve seen Akira Kurosawa’s haunting film Dreams, your musings about March are undoubtedly technicolored by the vignette “The Peach Orchard.” The story circles around Hina Matsuri, the Japanese Doll Festival commonly known as Girls’ Day, celebrated on the third day of the third month and coinciding with Momo no Sekku, the Peach Blossom Festival. Locally, Kaanapali Beach Hotel is unsurpassed in its Girls’ Day offerings. Their Sunday brunch features over 85 dishes, like grilled ahi with ginger and shitake mushroom sauce, tsukemono (pickled) vegetables and various types of mochi and manju. And in the lobby (just outside of the banquet hall’s doors), you can explore a number of interactive demonstrations by the Japanese Cultural Society. The impressive doll collection of Trisha Goya Kapuaala (passed down from Faye Kashiwa Otsuka, from Atsuko Kashiwa) will proudly be on display, and the doll makers from Makawao Hongwanji will demonstrate their craft. Plus, you can learn Japanese Ordori dancing from local experts, and exercise artful dexterity with origami and mini ikebana (flower arranging), among other performances and activities. 667-0124; hawaiiansundaybrunch.com

S

urely John Edward is a chronic insomniac. How else can a man who bilks the bereaved sleep at night? To create the illusion of having otherworldly abilities, self-titled psychic mediums like Edward (who was on Maui last Saturday) employ high-probability guessing and subjective validation in a technique called “cold reading.â€? Before a large audience of “sittersâ€? (the industry term for subjects), a cold-reader like Edward will rapidly say generic names and blanket personality traits, hoping one of these statements will resonate with someone in the crowd. “It’s up to somebody to pick up on it and turn it into what they want it to be,â€? explained master illusionist Derren Brown, in an interview with evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins. “It’s not really about forensic body reading... it’s not even that clever. There are linguistic tricks that, unless you’re aware of them, are very easy to fall for.â€? But more than fall for these tricks, people pay—a lot. Though fools are easily parted from their money, I have sympathy for these mourning saps. I mean, think about your dearly departed, the ones for whom your stomach still turns and your eyes still well with grief. What if they could transmit messages to you from the great beyond? What would that experience be worth? Priceless, right? For the over 400 attendees at Edward’s Maui Theatre show, the price was $85 to $125 apiece. I suppose there’s some strategy in that—it certainly curates the crowd to the credulous only. Well, not credulous only. I was there, too. Though my non-belief is in full form, I can’t help but be fascinated. What makes these swindlers successful— and what makes the rest of us so gullible? Edward is the psychic world’s poster boy—he’s authored a bunch of best-selling books including Crossing Over and After Life, and thanks to exposure on Oprah has a syndicated television series called John Edward Cross Country, broadcast on SyFy. So I at least assumed I’d be in for an interesting show. “I think you’ll ďŹ nd it disappointingly transparent,â€? Brown said to Dawkins. “With any sort of skepticism, you’ll see through everything.â€? Sure enough, Edward was veritably,

disappointingly transparent. Try as I might to suspend disbelief, Edward’s few, loose hits—amidst his numerous glaring misses—made the experience almost unbearable. For example, apparently, there are two spirits haunting the Maui Theatre who desperately want to communicate to someone (anyone!) about Burt Landcaster and Sophia Loren. “Does anyone have any connection to Burt Landcaster? A father or grandfather or uncle who’s passed who really liked Burt Landcaster, or somehow who knew Burt Landcaster?â€? asked Edward. After a long, awkward pause, a man raised his hand. “Um, I once had an uncle Burt,â€? he offered. “No, no. That’s not it,â€? replied Edward, hanging onto the dead-end thread for far too long. Still, crickets. So, Edward abandoned Burt (and later Loren, when that failed, too) for something else more sweeping (losing a mother to breast cancer or a father to emphysema—which, somewhat surprisingly, also failed). I had a half-hatched plan to raise my hand and bite one of Edward’s hooks. I ďŹ gured if he didn’t see through my ruse, it’d be further proof he’s no psychic. But every time I had the opportunity, I simply couldn’t bring myself to do it. Partly I didn’t feel comfortable lying, but mostly I felt I would be robbing someone else of the comfort they so desperately desired. Edward offers something many people want, but that’s impossible to give. Yet for the crying woman who believes she connected with her murdered brother, or the trio of sisters who supposedly received loving sentiments from their dead dad, the experience was powerful. I spoke with these women afterward and, between sobs, each said, “I really needed that.â€? Is that enough to make Edward’s act forgivable? Do the ends justify the means (and the price)? Let’s turn again to Brown: “If they’re lies, who are you to decide that your lies are what people need to hear to feel comfort? It’s a twisted logic... In the bigger picture, I think it’s crueler to be taken in by that deception.â€? â– To read more Kula Kid with links and photos and stuff, and to leave comments, visit mauifeed.com/kulakid To share or save: mt.hy.pr/1437k

HOROSCOPE

sign.language.astrology@gmail.com +

Sign Language PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) When someone thinks they know better than you about what you ought to prioritize and what should be put on the back burner, or discarded entirely, you have a problem. Unfortunately, this isn’t one of those problems that’ll go away with a simple, “mind your own business,” no matter how much they really ought to. It could escalate to dramatic levels very easily. Defusing this potentially explosive situation might very well have to go to the top of your current priority list, whether you like it or not—but that, of course, is entirely up to you. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You’re like an amateur fairy godmother, aren’t you? You love to help make people’s wishes come true. However, sometimes you end up biting off more than you can chew. Then you simply have to accept that this particular wish is more than you can handle. As heartbreaking as it might be to let someone down, there’s really no other option. Learn this lesson: attempt to better assess the things you take on, before you take them on, and make sure you’ll be able to follow through. The only thing worse than crushing someone’s dreams is raising their hopes high before you do it. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Ironically, the person most resistant to your wise advice is you. Even when you take a step back from a tricky situation and issue the advice you’d offer anyone else in a similar scenario, you have trouble heeding your own counsel. You’re too stubborn. Even though the rational part of you can agree that your suggestions are sound, that part’s simply not in control. This week is all about handing over the reins to the most logical, least emotional side of yourself, utterly and completely, so that you can do what you know needs doing. That, of course, is easier said than done—but it’s still this week’s goal. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Just shut up! While your silver tongue has gotten you out of many situations, it’s not the answer to everything. You can’t talk yourself out of some things, and frequently—especially right now—running your mouth will just make things much, much worse. Clamp down on the terrible temptation to try to smooth-talk those involved and somehow turn the scenario around with a few well-chosen words. It won’t work. Bite your tongue, already. I guarantee such a bite will hurt much less than the kind you might receive from someone else if you fail to keep your lips sealed. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Unlike those image-conscious Leos and socially-adept Geminis, you Cancers are usually too involved with your own emotions and subjective viewpoint to clearly see exactly how you come off to other people—which is frequently drastically different from what you imagine. This is especially important when it comes to interviews and first impressions. This isn’t a call to adopt some fake, perfectly palatable persona for these occasions, but simply to attempt to see yourself more objectively, in the moment, rather than after the fact (which is of course much easier). With such objective observation, the necessary subtle changes will happen quite naturally. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Pretending you’re anything other than a proud and powerful lion doesn’t work for more than the very short-term. You’re not that good an actor. I’ve seen Leos try to be kittenish, meek, and docile, and they come off as whiny, fake, or bored instead. It’s quite simply better to just be yourself, in all your overblown glory. Yes, that means you’re completely inappropriate for some situations, and you will rub certain people the wrong way. But your inappropriateness and feather-ruffling would become evident sooner or later, no matter what you did. Why not just get it out of the way? VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) You’d think Virgos, given your penchant for cleanliness and

order, wouldn’t particularly like housepets. Untrue! Most Virgos have a profound love for their cats, dogs, or other creatures, despite their tendencies to shed on furniture, chew on slippers, or pee on rugs. It’s one of the weird, seeming incongruities that makes you such a fascinating person, instead of a stereotypical cliché, for anyone who bothers to get to know you more than superficially. You have many such surprising facets. If someone seems to be putting you in a box this week, wave one of them around.

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions on page 6 1. He’s a professional snowboarder (who won three X-Games gold medals earlier this month)

2. Hereafter, Best Visual Effects; no 3. A draw 3. Vog, sulfur dioxide

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) When was the last time you took a real risk, or sought out genuine adventure? I’m not talking about fake adrenaline rush “adventures” like hopping on a roller coaster. I’m referring to the stuff that gets your heart pounding because it involves true unknowns, or perhaps emotional risks. Unlike those risk-loving Scorpios, reckless Aries, or courageous Leos, this isn’t something that comes naturally to you (those other signs really can’t help themselves). However, it’s still a quality worth cultivating, even if it does lead to some discomfort or even pain—the richness it adds to your life will more than outweigh those. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Scorpios are wild creatures that can never really be domesticated. They might appear tame for short periods of time, and they may evolve out of capricious use of their formidable stings, but they never truly lose that wild side, that attraction to darkness, danger, sex, and all the most fascinating aspects of life. Only those who truly understand this can stand beside their Scorps for the long haul. Of course, I wish I could convey this to every other sign in the zodiac, but ultimately I’ve decided it’s not really my job; it’s yours. You want someone to stick around? Make sure they understand this, deep down, as soon as possible. Whether they accept it or not is out of your hands, but if they truly can’t, isn’t it better you figure it out now? SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC.21) While Sagittarians can be good gardeners, they’re generally not inclined to be. Sticking around long enough to tend sprouts, prune plants, and harvest produce just doesn’t come naturally to you. Most of the kinds of seeds you sow are those that either come to fruition quickly, or can be carried with you on your next journey or adventure. However, every once in a while, it might be worth planning around a harvest that’s likely to add tremendous richness and perhaps even adventure to your life, if you’re patient enough. This could be one of those times. So, are you sufficiently patient? I suppose only time will tell. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) I’ve never shot a gun. Nevertheless I would attempt to learn how, quickly, if the world was overrun by braindevouring zombies. Sensibly, acquiring skills we don’t have immediate uses for doesn’t rank high on our priority lists. That’s why it’s so galling when we’re forced to waste time learning stuff we simply can’t imagine ever needing to know (remember algebra in high school?). This is one of those times when you might be forced to fill your brain with stuff that’s useless to you. Instead of wasting a lot of energy getting pissed off about it, wrack your brain trying to think of potential uses for the “knowledge” you’re acquiring. If that fails, just try to get through the situation as quickly and painlessly as possible. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Tomorrow’s another day. Sometimes that’s your only consolation when today’s not so good. Things can look different after a good night’s sleep, or just 24 hours’ passage of time. It’d be great if you could turn things around right this second, but that’s just not always possible; when it’s not, the best thing to do is just remember that everything changes. Stop railing against the lameness of the moment, and simply concentrate on getting through it. Bide your time. Notice the small little things that are still sweet, instead of the one big sour thing…and wait.
