Trees Company A plan to cut down four monkeypod trees along South Kihei Road has some residents up in arms, though County officials say it may be necessary to avoid further damage to the sidewalk, street and a nearby parking lot. The flap began after Parks Department arborist David Sakoda determined the trees—located in the

This week, HECO announced the two sides had reached a “tentative settlement” pending union approval. In a statement, Gov. Abercrombie—who, despite the support he received from IBEW during the campaign, mostly avoided taking
County right-of-way by the Maui Schooner Resort—were planted in too small an area and have created a “hazardous” situation. Sakoda said removing only the roots isn’t an option, since that could destabilize the trees. Not everyone agrees. Various groups, including the Kihei Community Association and the County’s Arborist Advisory Committee, have called for more discussion before any action is taken. They’ll get a chance on Monday, during a meeting called by South Maui Councilmember Don Couch. Couch says the meeting, set for 6pm at the Kihei Charter School, will solicit “comments and concerns from the community and [seek] alternatives.” Representatives from the Mayor’s office and the Parks Department

Park It Here, Paia To call the parking situation in Paia a crisis might be hyperbole, but not by much. This week the tension was alleviated at least partially by the opening of a revamped, 85-space lot behind Charley’s. Once free and pothole-pocked, the lot is now paved— and no longer free. Parking costs $1 for the first half-hour and $2 for every hour thereafter. After 5pm, there’s a $5 flat rate. Of course, as anyone who’s driven from one end of town to the other on a busy Saturday evening can attest, 85 spots aren’t going to solve the problem. Enter developers Henry Spencer and David Spee, who in conjunction with Mana Foods are set to open a 100-stall gravel lot near the post office later this month and eventually plan to create a permanent, 230-space lot (along with housing and other commercial developments). “As promised, the County is working with the private sector in order to get things done faster,” said Mayor Arakawa in a statement. “This is one way we can help, especially when it comes to projects like this [that] have an immediate benefit for the community.”

READER FEEDBACK Ted Rall’s article [“You Say You Want a Revolution?”, March 3] was interesting, but lacks a local perspective. I believe revolution, or at least rebellion, is inevitable here. So far there seems to be a media blackout on the subject, as though merely discussing it might prompt an uprising. I can understand the fear, but I assure you it will not. The lid is still tightly on and the oppressed do not yet realize their potential.

NEWS OF THE WEIRD PIC IN THE HEAD New York University arts professor Wafaa Bilal had his camera surgically removed in February—the one that was implanted in the back of his skull in November to record, at 60-second intervals, the places he had left behind (beamed to and archived by a museum in Qatar). The camera had been mounted under his skin, braced by three titanium posts, but his body very painfully rejected one of the posts. His temporary solution is to merely tie the camera to the back of his neck (even though that work-around is unsatisfactory to him because it represents a less-personal “commitment” to the art). In the future, he said, communication devices like his will routinely be part of our bodies.
BOOZE YOUR FRIENDS WISELY In December, a company in eastern Ukraine (a country known for hard drinking) announced a “drinking buddy” service in which, for the equivalent of about $18, it would supply a barroom companion for the evening, “qualified” to discuss politics, sports, women, etc., and even to offer psychological counseling if appropriate.
EAU DE POON “Vulva Original” is the “scent of a beautiful woman” reported in Harper’s magazine in August 2010. And German company VivaEros is selling it as a fragrance concentrate for the equivalent of about $35 a bottle. (The promotional video is a lavishly photographed gym scene featuring a handsome male who observes a beautiful
female working out on a stationary bike and then gently sniffs the seat.) “The female smell of intimacy,” promises VivaEros, “triggers sexual attraction and desire” and increases intensity “during self-stimulation.”
FLESH DRIVES “You’re not going to like this,” warned NPR’s Robert Krulwich, about to deliver a February story about visionary robotics developers James Auger and Jimmy Loizeau who created a carnivorous clock, supposedly able to power itself for 12 days merely on the carcasses of 12 dead houseflies (which the clock traps with fly paper and then mechanically razors in two). The pair also showed a prototype of a coffee table that catches mice by luring them up the table legs with cheese into a hole in the center, where they are guillotined. Auger and Loizeau said their creations are just extensions of TV nature programs showing animals hunting in the wild, but Krulwich fretted about the dangers inherent in “giving robots a taste for [meat].”
INCOMPETENT CRIMINALS Another “negative cash-flow” robbery occurred in February, in Kansas City, Missouri, as an unidentified man tried to distract the clerk at a gun store by laying $40 on the counter to buy a box of bullets, then pulling a gun and demanding all the store’s money. The clerk thwarted the robbery by pulling his own gun and scaring the robber off—while the $40 remained on the counter. ■

THE RACE IS ON The scramble to fill Sen. Dan Akaka’s soon-to-be-vacant Senate seat could feature some old foes and familiar faces BY JACOB SHAFER hat sound you heard last week was the collective lip-smacking of numerous Hawaii politicians—both in and out of office—who are now chewing on a tantalizing question: who wants to become a United States Senator? It’s a pretty plumb gig—one that comes with influence, power and prestige. And the opportunity doesn’t present itself often; before 86-year-old Sen. Dan Akaka announced his intention to hang it up in 2012, Hawaii hadn’t seen an open Senate race in more than two decades. No one is an official candidate yet, which means everyone is a potential candidate. Here’s a look at some of the prominent names that have been floated and their respective chances of stamping a ticket to Washington.
T
LINDA LINGLE
Long before Akaka’s announcement—and while she was still ensconced in the Governor’s mansion—Lingle was rumored to be eyeing a Senate bid. She stumped hard for McCain/Palin in 2008, making frequent trips to the Mainland and speaking at the Republican National Convention, in a clear effort to raise her national profile. She was a divisive figure at home and left office with her share of detractors, but the former Maui Councilmember and Mayor is not to be underestimated—you don’t nail down two gubernatorial terms in a deeply Democratic state without knowing how to campaign. Plus, it’s a
ED CASE
Case has gunned for Akaka’s seat before— and paid the price. In 2006, thenRepresentative Case defied prominent Democrats including senior Senator Dan Inouye and challenged Akaka in the primary. He was beaten soundly, and the Democratic machine refused to back him four years later when he ran against Colleen Hanabusa in a special election for Neil Abercrombie’s House seat. (Case and Hanabusa split the vote, allowing Charles Djou to slip in.) Case is a perennial politician and, though he stepped aside in the September primary and allowed Hanabusa to run unchallenged, there’s no question he’s interested in seeking elected office again. Whether his party will support him is another matter; asked to list potential successors for his old colleague, Inouye has repeatedly failed to name-drop Case.
safe bet the RNC will throw its weight behind this race, hoping to steal a suddenly up-forgrabs seat and embarrass President Obama in his home state. Charles Djou—who got a taste of Washington life and enjoyed a brief honeymoon as a GOP darling—and former Lieutenant Governor Duke Aiona have also been mentioned as possible contenders. Djou hasn’t ruled out a run, but told D.C.’s The Hill that Lingle is a “close friend” and that he’s “interested in seeing what she decides to do.” Aiona, meanwhile, seems even less likely to challenge his old running mate. This looks like Lingle’s call all the way.
REP. COLLEEN HANABUSA
The former state Senator has barely hit the ground in D.C., but the possibility of climbing another rung on the ladder may be too enticing to pass up. With no term limits and an astronomical advantage for incumbents, this is a rare and politically golden opportunity. Hanabusa released a statement praising Akaka, who she called “a great leader with humility and grace”—but she’s said nothing about her intentions.
REP. MAZIE HIRONO
Hirono is in the same boat as Hanabusa, except that she’s been in Congress longer. And like Hanabusa she’s offered only praise for Akaka so far. She ran for governor against Lingle in 2002, losing a tight race, so there’d be some history at play if the two locked horns again. If Hanabusa or Hirono decide to run, there’s a good chance Case and other state Dems might aim for their vacated seats instead.
10 MARCH 10, 2011
MUFI HANNEMANN
After getting trounced by Neil Abercrombie in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, Hannemann accepted a pretty flimsy consolation prize: head of the Hawaii Hotel and Lodging Association. How badly does the former Honolulu Mayor want to get back into politics? Among the flood of congratulatory press releases that flowed out after Akaka’s announcement, Mufi’s was the only one that hinted at other intentions. “While some may be curious, there will be plenty of time to discuss my own personal plans in light of his announcement,” wrote Hannemann. “Today, however, is a day to sing Senator Akaka’s praises.” Ah, the old “whatever you do, don’t look at me!” ploy. on’t let the elegant decor in the lobby of the Ritz Carlton intimidate you— once you’re inside Kai Sushi it’s time to let your hair down, relax and enjoy world-class Japanese cuisine. You can even bring the kids. The big woven grass chairs and warm m wood tones set a neutral backdrop for the beautiful and invigorating fish and sushi rolls; it’s very Zen. Come at sunset when you can still see the ocean vista while you dine on their covered lanai.. Another compelling reason n to come is their half-off kama‘aina deal (with Hawaii ID), every day from m 5:30 to 6:30pm. Chef Tadashi Yoshino and d his team have been honing their sushi prowess together er for years. The style and pacee is very Japanese, each plate taking on its own fleeting art form and then vanishingg before your eyes (and into your mouth). “Start with the he tuna tataki salad. Then the kai roll and the shrimp tempura ra rolls,â€? Chef Tadashi advises.. “Those are our best sellers. But don’t forget the poke—we have the best ahi poke.â€? The ahi tataki is so gorgeous when it arrives, I had an inner struggle before attacking it. The daikon and sweet Maui onion form a mountain while the expertly sliced ahi pieces lay against it, embellished with tobiko, aioli and kaiware sprouts forming a peak at the top. It’s a sashimi volcano. If you’re up for cocktials, try the kai kumo. The drink is milky and cloudy, the color of wasabi, but don’t be alarmed. The blissfully sweet flavors of honeydew connect with sake to give you a new-experience martini. For sake purists, the sake flight is a delicious way to go. Sushi is one of the most aesthetically pleasing foods, a kaleidoscope of color and texture, but if it isn’t delicious it’s a waste. Every morsel of sushi here is divine. The California roll, the iconic fusion starter
for the uninitiated, is like a gateway drug to sushi, made here with real crab and elevated to Hollywood status. If you sit at the sushi bar you get the full treatment from the chefs. Eating omakase means letting the sushi chefs design your meal and craft your dining experience. Chef Tadashi says the secret to amazingg sushi is “fresh fish, good rice and strong wasabi with good-looking sushi chefs. From the view at the bar, they’ve

The resort restaurant with the long name rolls out a Maui-centric menu
T
he Humuhumunukunu-kuapua‘a Restaurant at the lovely Grand Wailea resort has got to have one of the longest names ever, so we call it Humu for short. Starting Sunday, March 13 Humu is launching Localvore week and featuring a pre fixe menu that exemplifies Maui’s glorious bounty. It’s a treat for guests and residents alike. Humu’s new chef, Isaac Bancaco, is originally from Maui, but before settling back home he cut his teeth working alongside celebrity Chef Ming Tsai, known for his Chinese fusion. Bancaco says he strives to showcase the best the islands have to offer, both from the land and sea, while incorporating the techniques and influences of his Filipino, Hawaiian and Chinese roots. I caught up with him recently to find out more about eating local. What is Localvore week? It’s really a time to brag about our local farmers and their meticulous efforts to grow some of the world’s best produce. Why do you feel it’s important to work with local farmers? The importance of working with local farmers for me is very simple: the produce is the best I can get my hands on. You won’t find juicier strawberries, crispier asparagus, more vibrant haricot verts, healthier bok choy or more nutrient-filled tat soi than right here on Maui. In addition to the quality of the product, I’m born and raised in Kula and grew up with and around most of the farms and the families that depend on local restaurants to sustain production. The significance of never forgetting my roots, supporting my community and effectively working together with the farmers to be innovative needs to remain at the front of the Localvore movement.
What’s the inspiration for the menu? Our inspiration continually comes from new products, new ideas, new techniques and the ability to immediatelyy implement them into a menu. Localvore weekk is a format where we can put innovation into practice. All chefs thrive on the immediate gratification of cooking, but we also understand that just geoff haines & because it looks Chef Bancaco at waipoli hydr oponic farms good, tastes good and smells good, doesn’t mean it will sell. ell. “
C
ats has the perfect message for Maui because it’s about family in the hanai sense,” says director and choreographer Alexander “Aly” Cardinalli. “It’s a welcoming, poignant story about a tribe who loves each other no matter what.” Cardinalli has a powerful firsthand understanding of the love hanai family can have. Growing up in Keanae and Kihei during the summers and holidays of his youth, and in Nevada during the school year, Cardinalli credits his family— especially his stepfather, Robert Kimball— with the support he needed to launch a successful career. “If it wasn’t for my stepfather’s encouragement, I wouldn’t have done all that I’ve done—and I wouldn’t be producing Cats, today,” he says. A classically trained dancer, Cardinalli began his career in choreography at the tender age of 16. A producer noticed him in a talent competition and immediately hired Cardinalli to choreograph an ambitious project interpreting Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream set to music by Monty Python. After high school, he moved to New York to attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, where he received a degree in theater and voice. Since, he’s traveled the country to perform and teach. Cardinalli moved home to Maui five years ago “to be closer to family,” and soon after opened his own dance and theater school, Visions Conservatory, based in Wailuku. Cardinalli says it’s been his dream to direct Cats ever since he worked as the assistant choreographer for the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina’s production, and performed in the roles of Coricopat, Rumpus cat, and Ghengis cat, plus understudied for the roles of Mr. Mistoffeles, Alonzo and Mungojerrie. For the last three years he’s pitched Cats to Maui OnStage; he says it was challenging to convince the powers that be that the talent pool on-island is deep enough for such a “challenging production of physical and emotional extremes.” Last year, Cats was finally selected as the producer’s choice installment of the 2010-’11 season at Iao Theater, and secured licensing by Rodgers and Hammerstein Theatricals. An ecstatic Cardinalli called his

stepfather to tell him the good news. But sadly, Kimball won’t be here to see his stepson’s dream come to fruition this Friday. He passed away just a month later. Bereaved though Cardinalli may be, the loss of his stepfather is further fueling his fire to put on a production he says is of “Broadway quality.”

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN The River (CBS; 1980)
B
ased on T.S. Eliot’s collection of poems, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, with a score by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Cats has resonated with audiences worldwide for 30 years. First opening in New York’s West End in 1981 and debuting on Broadway in 1982, Cats went on to win seven 1983 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score. Cats ran until September 2000 and is the second-longest running Broadway musical of all time (trumped only by Phantom of the Opera). It has been translated into over 20 languages and in 1998 was adapted as a made-for-television movie. Cardinalli says Cats boasts some of “the most physically and vocally demanding pieces in musical theater.” Well-versed in the musical’s multiple productions, he’s amalgamated what he deems “the best-fitting” elements of choreography from the Berlin, Broadway, Tokyo, Zurich and U.S. national tour productions. And he says he’s found the talent to pull it off, starting with musical director Kristen D.F. Otterson, a choral and musical director at Baldwin High School. Cardinalli says he’s delighted with the 27-member cast—who he calls “the perfect ensemble”—and is wowed by their “highly unusual” camaraderie and dedication. Part of the reason the team works so well is Cardinalli’s unique casting strategy: he doesn’t just consider actors’ auditions, but also the way they interact with each other during downtime. “I really look at how well they play in the sandbox,” he says (or, in this case, the litter box). Speaking of play, one element the local
Lina Aiko Krueger
production incorporates from the Broadway show is “kitty playtime.” It means for the actors, intermission is no reprieve. Rather, they stalk the isles and interact with audience members—staying completely in character. Though our theater scene’s welldefined vocal talents—leads like Dale Button, who plays the grizzled old actor named Asparagus, and Lina Aiko Krueger, who plays the pariah-seeking-salvation Grizabella—would give themselves away if audiences were blindfolded, “one of the interesting things about this production,” Cardinalli says, “is due to the heavy makeup, wigs and costumes, it may be difficult for people to recognize who’s performing onstage. It might surprise people that these talented people are our friends and people we interact with in our daily lives.” Maybe this is another way Cats will speak to Hawaii audiences. With song and dance it artfully illustrates how cool cats of every shape, size and color can live with and love one another despite differences and discretion— and perhaps achieve purrfect harmony. ■
Listening to this album is like reading a John Steinbeck novel; the people in it have been hardened by life. The Boss sings of soul-crushing disappointment in “Jackson Cage,” dating ladies from the ghetto in “Sherry Darling,” an abandoned husband in “Stolen Car” and the inability to simply walk away from life’s obligations in “The Price You Pay.” But the title track is The Boss at his best. The story of two teenagers who get old too quickly is told in stark and hard language (“Then I got Mary pregnant/And man that was all she wrote/And for my nineteenth birthday I got a union card and a wedding coat”). The music accompanying Springsteen’s fantastic lyrics pays homage to the doo-wop, pop and rock that saturated New Jersey in the 1950s and ’60s. You can hear traces of Frankie Valli in songs like “Cadillac Ranch” and “I’m a Rocker.” That early rock n’ roll sound is also apparent in the double album’s only single, “Hungry Heart,” which is rumored to be a song originally intended for the Ramones. This is also probably the first time The Boss exposes his country and gospel roots in a studio album. The River is one of Springsteen’s best records, which means that it is also one of the best American albums of all time. Get it. Get it now. - Ben Lowenthal

Botox jokes and alien babies peeing on people’s heads? Here’s to you, Mom Mars Needs Moms
★★★★★

W
hile most kids are afraid of the Boogeyman, the monster in their closet or Lady Gaga, nothing scared me more as a child than being abducted by aliens. I used to be petrified of getting beamed out of my bed, probed and dumped by a UFO. (Reading Whitley Strieber’s Communion when you’re 10 years old will do that to you.) It didn’t help that the little boy who gets alien ‘napped in Close Encounters of the Third Kind was named “Barry.” So Mars Needs Moms—a motioncapture, CGI Disney comedy—would have terrified me in the ’80s. Seth Green voices a small child whose mom (voiced by Joan Cusack) is kidnapped by Martians who suck out her brain so they can learn how to

be better parents. Luckily, our hero hitches a ride into outer space, takes everything in stride (like most kids in Disney flicks) and, more than anything, wants to save Mom so he can apologize for mouthing off at her during dinner time. The animation is fantastic, with CGI landscapes and sets that are remarkable in their realism. Producer Robert Zemeckis (who directed The Polar Express and Beowulf) once again oversees a film that pushes the envelope in animation excellence and motion-capture performance. The film starts off as something smart, sweet and with crossover appeal. Over time, though, it wears out its welcome. The introduction of a character named

Gribble is where the movie stopped being fun for me—he’s a bloated, pop culture savvy astronaut who, despite having been in space since the ‘80s, acts like a modern-day movie fanboy. The character is obnoxious and sucks the funny out of his many scenes. Like Zemeckis’s recent A Christmas Carol, the characters resemble their real-life counterparts so closely (Cusack’s character especially), you wonder why they didn’t just make a live-action movie with CGI instead of needlessly creating a 90-minute special effect. Green had his voice digitally altered to sound like a small boy, which was the same thing done to Gary Oldman when he played Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol.
Oldman is brilliant and Green is a reliably good comic actor, but doesn’t this vaguely creepy performance alteration just keep talented child actors from getting work? It also seems unnecessary, since I didn’t know it was Green until the end credits; it could have been Frank De Lima voicing the kid and I never would have known. The end credits feature extensive liveaction footage of the actors performing their roles on a high-tech, motion-capture stage; even though the sets are bare, these outtakes are more engaging and funnier than the actual movie. The film is inoffensive, though I hated the cheap plug for Disneyland, the alien baby peeing on someone’s head and when the young hero uttered this line: “Mars needs Botox!” Aside from the best and most dramatic scene, which involves shattered glass, the 3D is useless. Bottom line: small children will probably love this, while their parents will be able to tolerate it for an hour and a half. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1438f

New Zealand is home to a plethora of awesome. The Maori, for one. Epic landscapes, for another. And you can’t forget The Lord of the Rings, The Flight of the Conchords and, of course, Maisey Rika, a young singer/songwriter hailing from Whakatane, New Zealand. If you haven’t yet heard Maisey Rika croon her heartfelt songs, just imagine Sade’s heartbreakingly honest and raw rasp intertwined with the rich culture and te reo (language) of the Maori. Rika says her culture, whaanau (family), friends, people and music are the most important things in her life. And you can really feel that in her music. She’s been kicking butt and taking names since she was 15, when her first album, E Hine, went double platinum and she was nominated for “Best Female Vocalist” at the New Zealand Music Awards. Rika will perform alongside her brother and Hawaii’s own Renaissance man (and multiple award winner) George Kahumoku Jr. Definitely a show not to be missed, and if you do miss it, your face will melt off and your children will weep over your exploded body. Since the dawn of time, “party at the pavilion” has meant that [insert Uncle of choice] has gotta wake up with the roosters to stake out dibs on da choicest spot at Iao Valley’s Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens. But henceforth, “party at the pavilion” has a glitzy new meaning—the MACC’s newly-completed, $13 million Yokouchi Pavilion. If your hippocampus is on vacation, I’ll remind you that two weeks ago the Pavilion’s inaugural weekend began with Elton John and ended with NAS and Damian Marley. Apparently, this wasn’t quite good enough, so the MACC’s making it more official this weekend with a free for all (read: free and public) celebration, culminating with a grand finale fireworks show. No localstyle party is complete without ono grinds (free popcorn, chow fun and soft drinks) and bouncy castles, plus you can tour the new facilities like Morgado Hall, overlooking Kahului Harbor. Maui musicians, halau hula and school groups will perform under the illuminated, pedestaled pyramid that now crowns the amphitheater’s outdoor stage (see if you can count all 288 glass panels). So be like Uncle Insert and get there early to stake out a good spot for you and your ‘ohana. 242-2787; mauiarts.org

Is That An Opera In Your Pocket?

At around the same time San Fran’s famed North Beach was birthing the beat generation, Little Italy’s cabarets were hosting pianist Donald Pippin’s weekly series of Sunday night concerts. By the time the hippies started burning their bras, Pippin was producing popular one-act operas. Finding the available English adaptations of operatic libretti (text) to be “archaic, artificial and opaque,” Pippin decided to try translating the works himself. He’s been heralded for his writing wit ever since. With an ever-growing repertory, the ’70s saw the incorporation of Pocket Opera as a nonprofit organization to continue Pippen’s mission: to make opera accessible. Sunday, the Maui Pops Orchestra hosts the Pocket Opera—performing The Elixir of Love (L’elisir d’amore) by Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti with lead singers from SF joined by local performers from Olinda Chorale and Musical Voices Maui. If that leaves you hungry for more, a gala dinner with the performers will follow the show (tickets sold separately, $75) and features a Chinese buffet catered by UH Maui College’s Culinary Academy, plus entertainment. 242-7469; mauiarts.org /pocketopera.org

Here’s a rundown on the haps on everyone’s favorite religious-turnedsecular celebration: Mulligan’s on the Blue starts the party early (6am check-in) with their 2nd Annual St. Patrick’s Day Golf Tournament, a benefit for Hospice Maui. Shotgun start is at 6:30am with a breakfast of homemade Irish soda bread and farm fresh eggs served at 8am (call Bill at 280-2296 or Tina at 874-1131 for more information). Their entertainment lineup is as full as their buffet ($25 lunch, $60 dinner, $15 food tent), with Trevor Jones (11am-1pm; also playing at Dog & Duck Irish Pub at 2pm and Lahaina Yacht Club at 6pm), Celtic Hart (1-3pm), Mean Fiddlers (3-4pm), Isle of Maui Pipe Band (4:30-5pm & 7-7:30pm), The Celtic Tigers (5-7pm & 7:30-8:30pm) and Willie K Band (9pm-12am). Speaking of the Dog & Duck, they’ve got $10 corned beef and cabbage, $3 Killians and $5 Maggie O Ritas, with the aforementioned live music starting at 1:30pm, plus a free shuttle running between the Triangle and Mulligan’s every hour starting at 4pm. Or stay away from the fray at the Triangle and bask in the luck of the Irish at Diamonds with shepherd’s pie and fish and chips specials and $4 green beers all day. Guinness Maui Cattle Company corned beef by Chef Macadangdang will be on the menu at Roy’s Kahana Bar & Grill’s four-course Irish beer pairing dinner ($45). At Ambrosia (10pm), everything is magically delicious with their sexy St. Patrick’s celebration featuring drink specials with names like “Lindsay Lohan.” And speaking of naughty ladies, the Kit Kat Club hosts a fancy-dancy Emerald Ball at Casanova (9:30pm).

A Matter Of Time
H
ow small was Great Grandma? Her crib was a cigar box. In fact, she was so tiny, nobody wanted her (except her grandmother, who was a very nice lady). Four-year-old me ďŹ gures that if Great Grandma didn’t die from being too small (and thanks to Great Great Great Grandma, we’re proof of it), the new baby certainly won’t die from being too small—especially because everyone wants him very much. But no matter how much the world wants you, being that little isn’t preferable. To avoid this happening to the new baby, it’s very important that I be very quiet. Mommy needs her sleep. Three months of strict bed rest, the doctor says, or else the baby will be born too soon and too small. So, Mommy rests. But I sometimes check on her just to be sure she’s following doctor’s orders. Creeping as quietly as fat little kanak feet can on plantation house oorboards, I sneak into her room. Hardly taller than the mattress’s lip, I rest my nose at the edge of the bed and peer at Mommy, asleep. Like the curtains puckering in the Waikapu breeze, Mommy’s body rises and falls with her breath, exaggerated at the round mound of her belly. I try to match the rhythm of my inhalations to hers, stiing my exhalations in the cascading comforter. But for all my careful effort, Mommy still wakes up—on the hour, every hour. The big, buzzing beast on the bedside table makes sure of it. See, as much as Mommy needs rest, Mommy needs medicine. She needs a very particular kind of medicine that will allow the new baby the three months it needs to ďŹ nish growing and not be too small. But waking up every hour for three months is harder than it sounds, so Aunty Judy and Uncle Howell (the overly generous sort) loan us their special clock. Even more important than me being quiet, it’s important I never, ever touch this special clock. Mommy’s life depends on it and the new baby’s life depends on it, too. The clock belonged to Aunty Judy’s grandfather, Mamoru Takitani, who started Star Ice and Soda Works and Hawaiian Host. Back in the day, people used this kind of James Manufacturing Co. “Remind-O-Timerâ€? at railroad stations, in hospitals and at hotels. It’s the sort of clock an enterprising businessman might have, allowing its user to set up to
four alarms per hour, in increments as ďŹ nite as ďŹ ve minutes. It’s ďŹ ne with me that I never, ever touch the special clock, because why would I want to? Massive and menacing, the million metal levers around its face look like the legs of the fat, coiled centipedes sleeping under the old Hawaiian orange tree, and its hourly banshee cry is worse than every too-small baby with no one to soothe it. Fearful as I am of the special clock, I revere it. And because of it, the new baby is born right on time—after which the clock goes back to live with Aunty Judy and Uncle Howell.
S
orry, all my wrapping paper is packed up,â€? laughs Aunty Judy, as Mom unties a thin, white piece of rope around a small, plain cardboard box. It’s exactly 20 years later, and we’re sitting on our lanai in Kula. Dad looks on from his post at the grill. I stuff my face with another cone sushi from Takamiya Market, because I don’t have words for how much I’ll miss Aunty Judy and Uncle Howell after they move to Oahu to be closer to their growing grandkids. Mom opens the box’s lid, and out from the tissue paper coils a thin brown wire with an old, old plug. Jayson sees this and is already laughing. The tissue is pushed back and Mom and I both gleefully scream. Dad joins in with Jayson’s chuckle. In the box, of course, is the special clock. Later, I catch Jayson inspecting the clock, face to face. “I’d never seen it before,â€? he says. “But from the stories, I knew exactly what it was.â€? He plugs it in and tests the levers, the alarm. Then, lifting it carefully in his wrench-worn hands, he sets it in the hutch that holds our family’s most special things—in the space that seems to be waiting for it, next to Great Grandma’s radio. My eyes watering, I hug Jayson. He’s a man now, and turned out a lot like the clock that saved him: mysterious, mechanical, punctual, nostalgic. He’s a patient, thoughtful person who doesn’t make noise unless he needs to—and when he does, you listen. I often think he’s better than the world deserves, and it’s no wonder we all wanted him so much. â–

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions on page 9
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) If you’re wondering whether or not to ask the burning question that’s been on the tip of your tongue for ages now, ask yourself why you haven’t already. Is it possible you’re already pretty sure you know the answer—and it’s not the one you’re hoping for? You’ve dropped enough hints that the person in question is either preposterously clueless or not interested. This week, try considering the unasked question already answered, and see if you can move on to the next thing. If you discover you can’t proceed without hearing the words straight from the horse’s mouth, then go ahead and ask—but you’ll probably wish you could have just heeded my advice and let it go instead. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) If your agenda was to get smashed, you could simply consume everclear, which is typically 75-95 percent alcohol, but not necessarily all that pleasant. What’s the rush? It’d be a whole lot more fun to consume beverages you actually enjoyed, instead of being completely focused on the end goal of getting drunk. It’s fine to have goals (even such ludicrously silly ones as this), but when there are multiple available paths to achieve them, I’d urge you not to simply take the shortest straightest path, but rather the one that’s going to be the most fun. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Back in the 18th and 19th centuries, public fear of being buried alive led to the invention of numerous “safety coffin” designs, which included a bell that could be rung if one revived post-burial, and feeding and air tubes to aid survival while awaiting rescue. Although I’m sure these actually came in handy once or twice, I’m willing to wager that the overwhelming majority of those who purchased such devices never needed them. The precautions you’re considering are similarly outlandish and almost certainly unnecessary. If you can serenely spare yourself the trouble and expense, please do so. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Life is full of trade-offs. Don’t you think if there were one “perfect” option, you’d have figured it out by now? Instead, you’re faced with the interesting challenge of calculating which combination of positives and negatives will ultimately work out for the best. Don’t rush this. Your ability to see multiple perspectives may have you swinging back and forth indecisively for a while—but hang in there. If you keep examining the issue, you’ll eventually discover that one takes the decisive lead and make the best possible decision. You just need time to get there. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) It’s one thing to work out more and eat healthier purely to attract a lover; pursuing positive action for imperfect motives is just fine. It’s quite another to get plastic surgery, crash diet, or otherwise do unhealthy things to yourself for these kinds of reasons. You can’t help what motivates you; in fact acknowledging it is much better than obscuring it from yourself. However, you can control to what lengths your desires drive you, and set clear boundaries about what’s worth it, and what isn’t. Since you’re precariously close to that line (or may have already stepped over), get this in check, pronto. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) No matter how much you know about something, there’s always more you don’t yet know. Even if it’s something you yourself created out of the richness of your imagination, there are surprises left to be discovered. Being open to such revelations is the key to joy this week. Don’t assume you know everything—actually, adopt exactly the opposite attitude; assume you know almost nothing. Then, set out to explore and discover more. No need for dread. Although the surprises will be exactly that—surprising—they’ll also be excellent sources of delight and inspiration. Pretty cool, huh? The best part is that there’s always more where that came from.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Memory’s funny. Watch a movie you haven’t seen for a long time and you may not remember the plot points until they happen, when you say, “Oh yeah, now I remember.” Passage of time can fade knowledge of other people too— but their fundamental qualities will probably still be there. That might be a pleasant rediscovery if you reconnect with someone delightful you knew ages ago: “Oh yeah, this!” Of course, it might go the opposite route, for someone less wonderful: “Oh, right…this.” However, unlike movies— people change. Don’t box an old acquaintance into what you knew about them before, whether good or bad.
1. California 2. Alabama 3. Montana
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Try less hard. It’s counter-intuitive, I know. When you want something this bad, your instinct is to go all out trying to get it. However, there are some things you can only achieve by staying cool as you pursue them, always keeping something back, in reserve. Some things you can only hold loosely, lest you crush them, or they struggle until they’re free. This week is all about figuring out when it’s time go full-throttle balls-to-the-wall, or when it’s time to chill out, wait, and just play it cool. Get it right, and there’s not much you can’t score here; screw it up and nothing you do will keep it all from just evaporating. No pressure, though! SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) You find it fascinating when people are pushed to their limits. Really interesting stuff happens then and there. The trick is not shoving them over those limits, and breaking them. When you test people and help them realize their true potential, you’re at your best (even though they won’t often thank you for it, since such a process is frequently unpleasant); when you can’t keep them from getting seriously hurt, though, is when you’re at your worst. How good is your control? If you’re going to take someone to someplace dangerous, make sure you also have the ability to keep them safe. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC.21) Patience is hardly your chief virtue. In some Sagittarians, it’s virtually absent. Unfortunately, some goals are only achieved by having the enduring serenity of a tick, a creature that can lie in wait for up to a couple decades waiting for something appropriately juicy to come along before it springs into action. I question whether or not you’re capable or willing to develop a similar ability; what I don’t question is whether or not it’s necessary. Your options are pretty simple: either learn to chill out and wait, long-term, or let this particular goal go. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Everyone can incorporate small changes to improve their health and fitness and if they stuck to such changes, they would see results…eventually. However, people get impatient and expect huge results from tiny alterations in their behavior, and frustrated when things take longer. Is that what’s happening here? You may be expecting too much effect from too little action. Abandoning your strategy would be a bad idea; either replace it with something that promises more results, faster, or simply stick to it and accept that to get to where you want to go will require more patience than previously expected. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) If you expect people to consistently be honest with themselves about what they want, what they’re willing to do, and how much they’re capable of, you’re in for truckloads of disappointment. People lie to themselves constantly. Self-deception is commonplace—and consequently the inadvertent duping of others. You’ll recognize more enlightened people by their utter frankness and unwillingness to paint a picture that’s simply too good to be true. Value them. Even though the scenario they present isn’t nearly as pretty—it’s one you can believe in and count on. If that doesn’t mean something to you now, I expect you’ll just need to suffer another massive disappointment or two before it does.
