Coconut Wireless Budgetary Considerations “This is not a budget of fluff and extravagance but one of necessity,” Mayor Arakawa announced as he presented his plan for the 2012 fiscal year to the County Council last week. Arakawa said he got the draft budget to the Council a week early in an effort to “help them in their decision-making process.” The budget projects $632 million in total County funds, with $475.3 million going to operations and another $156.7 to

the previous year’s budget reduced the County’s operating expenditures by postponing purchases, delaying the filling of vacancies, instituting worker furloughs and restricting expenditures,” Arakawa wrote in his official budget message. “Unfortunately, the effects of these efforts have had a substantial negative impact on the County. The [2012 budget] aims to restore some of the most significantly affected areas and eliminate the furloughs.” A copy of the draft budget is available on the County Web site, mauicounty.gov.

written so broadly they include every form of media in the state,” wrote the Hawaii Publishers Association (HPA) in testimony provided to the Senate tourism committee. Further, HPA argues, “there isn’t a definitive way to determine how the trespasser obtained the information. It could have been from any variety of sources, including word-of-mouth.” Even if the bill does pass, (it was scheduled for a hearing this week) ACLU Hawaii says it’s “unlikely [to] survive a constitutional challenge.”

Reflecting the Mayor’s stated priorities, the largest chunk of money—$43.9 million—is allocated for water sourcing, development and transmission. That’s nearly double the amount in the 2011 budget. Another $22.7 million is set aside for wastewater projects, including new sewer lines, reclamation facilities and pump stations. Other significant investments include $19.9 million for road work, $16.2 million to replace the countywide public safety radio system and $3.9 million for park maintenance and upgrades. As required by the County Charter, the budget places one percent of real property tax revenue ($2.15 million) into the open space and cultural preservation fund and two percent ($4.3 million) into the affordable housing fund. “In adjusting to the declining economy,

Misguided? Accessing some of Hawaii’s best spots means trespassing on private property. But when people, particularly visitors, get hurt in the process, who’s responsible? That question is being asked on Oahu, where lawmakers are considering a bill that would hold the writers and publishers of guidebooks and visitor Web sites that tell readers how to access off-limits sites liable for injuries or deaths that occur. The Hawaii Tourism Authority, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and various major landowners support the bill. But media and free speech advocates say it’s a blatant violation of the First Amendment. “The definitions for visitor-guide publications and visitor-guide Web sites are

As the tragedy in Japan continues to unfold, many in Hawaii are asking how they can help. One possible answer: the Aloha Initiative, an effort aimed at offering housing and other support to displaced Japanese citizens. “Right now, our primary goal is to build a community of families that are willing to host someone for a week, for a month or even for a year,” said Keith Powers, one of the initiative’s founders. “We also have people signing up to help in other ways like offering to host dinners and to provide clothing.” Powers added that he hopes to involve members of the business community. Mayor Arakawa, whose managing director, Keith Regan, is also involved in the project, threw his support behind it this week. “Our goal is to provide survivors with an opportunity to get away and recharge themselves both physically and mentally,” said Arakawa. “Even if many choose not to come to Maui for respite, they will receive word through this program that our islands care and embody the true spirit of Aloha.” For more information, visit alohainitiative.com. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1440c

On March 15, the state Senate’s Public Safety, Government Operations and Military Affairs Committee voted in favor of a resolution that would declare February 6, 2011 Ronald Reagan Day in honor of the late president’s 100th birthday. (Maui Senator Roz Baker cast the lone dissenting vote.) We’re sure supporters are happy with how it turned out, but allow us to suggest a slight revision: WHEREAS, after campaigning on a platform of debt reduction, President Reagan more than tripled the national deficit during his two terms; and

NEWS OF THE WEIRD P(EE)hD Tihomir Petrov, 43, a mathematics professor at California State University Northridge, was charged in January with misdemeanors for allegedly urinating twice on the office door of a colleague with whom he had been feuding. (Petrov was identified by a hidden camera installed after the original puddles turned up.) Petrov is the author of several scholarly papers, with titles such as “Rationality of Moduli of Elliptic Fibrations With Fixed Monodromy.”

SERIOUS DRUG PROBLEM Gangs in Durban, South Africa, have recently begun stealing expensive anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs destined for AIDS patients and using them in the country’s most popular street drug, “whoonga,” a highly addictive, smoked cocktail of detergent, rat poison, marijuana and the ARVs. The crisis was reported by KwaZuluNatal province drug-abuse organizations and Durban police, who stood by their claims despite attempts by South African president Jacob Zuma to assure international suppliers of ARVs that more were needed and that none were being diverted for whoonga.

TAX OVERSIGHT Somehow, prison inmates finagled $39 million in undeserved federal tax refunds in 2009, according to a February report by the U.S. Treasury Department’s inspector general for tax administration. In Key West, Florida, for example, where prisoner Danilo Suarez was sentenced in January to five years in prison for filing multiple fraudulent returns, jailers discovered a pass-around sheet of instructions for false filings. While some refunds were legitimate (e.g., on pre-incarceration investment

activity), the IRS conducted fraud screenings on fewer than half of all returns filed by prisoners. (The IRS complained that, until 2008, it was illegal for the agency to share information with state corrections officials—or even with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.)

PEDO PALS State law in Tennessee prohibits registered sex offenders from re-contacting their victims, but there is no such restriction on anyone convicted of a sex crime before 2007 and still in prison who is not yet on the registered list. (Post-2007 sex criminals are automatically registered upon conviction.) Consequently, according to a February WMC-TV report, convicted molester Terry McConnell cannot be prevented from mailing birthday cards to one of his two victims (one reading, “I cannot believe my little tot-tot is already a teenager. You might be tired of me writing this, but I can’t get over how fast you are growing up”). Prison officials say their limited resources are better used on monitoring incoming mail rather than outgoing.

America has started another war it can’t afford, can’t explain—and likely can’t win

Whom are we helping? The U.S. and its allies are destroying Libya’s air force in order to tip the balance in the civil war in favor of anti-Qadafi forces. A similar approach, aerial bombardment of Afghan government defenses, allowed Northern Alliance rebels to break through Taliban lines and enter Kabul in 2001. It could work again in Libya. But who are these anti-Qadafi forces? Rival tribes? Royalists? Radical Islamists? What kind of government will they establish if they win? What are their ideological and religious affiliations? If anyone in the media or the

White House knows, they’re not telling. Or perhaps, as in Iraq, the White House doesn’t have a governance plan for postQadafi Libya. Which, as in Iraq, could lead to chaos. No nation should go to war without considering the long-term consequences. Before we pick sides in a conflict, shouldn’t we know for whom we are going billions of dollars further into debt?

Does Qadafi have the right to defend himself? From Shea’s Whiskey Rebellion to the Confederacy to the Red Scares to the Black Panthers and the Weathermen, the U.S. government has violently suppressed armed rebellions. How then can the U.S. claim moral authority to

“Why strike only Libya, when other regimes murder their citizens too?” asks Chris Good in The Atlantic Monthly. “Obama’s answer seems to be: because the UN Security Council turned its attention toward Libya, and not other places.” But the UN reacted in response to the U.S. In other words: We’re agreeing to a request that we made ourselves. Ideology and policy must be consistent to be credible. If we have a policy to depose dictators, then all dictators must be targeted. We can’t just take out those in countries with lots of oil. We ought to start with tyrants for which we bear responsibility: our allies and puppets. At this writing the U.S. supports or props up unpopular authoritarian regimes in Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Jordan, Yemen and elsewhere.

Libyan people rise up and overthrow Qadafi, an authoritarian despot well past his expiration date, that’s great. Shouldn’t that struggle be a Libyan matter, to be settled between Libyans? Isn’t a government that emerges from indigenous internal struggle more likely to enjoy widespread support than one that results from outside intervention? “Free men set themselves free,” said James Oppenheim. Can a people truly feel emancipated when they owe their freedom—and later, inexorably, their oil and gas—to a foreign superpower?

Why are we OK with some dictators, but not others? Since the Middle East began blowing up we’ve heard a lot of talk about Obama’s dilemma: How do we reconcile American values with American strategic interests? In a good country—at least a nonhypocritical one—they are the same.

n March 20— inauspiciously, the eighth anniversary of the Iraq invasion—U.S. forces fired 110 cruise missiles at Libya. Each one cost $755,000 to build and another $2.8 million to transport, maintain and shoot. Austerity and budget cuts abound; there’s no money for NPR or teachers or firefighters. But the government has lots of money. They’re just spending it on war. For people too young to remember Bosnia, this is what a violent, aggressive, militarist empire looks like under a Democratic president. Where Bush rushed, Obama moseys. No one believed ex-oil man Bush when he said he was out to get rid of the evil dictator of an oil-producing state; Obama, the former community organizer, gets a pass under identical circumstances. The other day, also the eighth anniversary of the start of the Iraq quagmire, there were only a handful of protests against Obama’s Libya war, all poorly attended. I attended Leftforum, an annual gathering of anticapitalist intellectuals. “What do you think about Libya?” people kept asking. What passes for the Left is ambivalent. In part this waffling on Libya is due to Obama’s deadpan (read: uncowboy-like) tone. Mostly, however, the tacit consent stems from televised images of ragtag anti-Qadafi opposition forces getting strafed by Libyan air force jets. We Americans like underdogs, especially when they say they want democracy. Still, the president is not a dictator. He can’t declare war. And while he might be able to lie his way into one, he and his party will pay at the polls if he fails to explain why we’re attacking a nation that poses no threat to the United States. There are a lot of questions we—citizens and journalists—should be asking Obama. Such as:

“spheres of influence” that governed international relations during the Cold War, Libya falls under the purview of other would-be interventionists. Italy, and to a lesser extent Britain and France, are former Libyan colonial masters. The Arab League and African Union have interests there. Even if you buy the sentimental argument—“Are we going to stand by and watch Qadafi slaughter his own people?”—why us? How much longer must we play world police? ■

Good Things Come In Pairs Your guide to Maui’s best food and drink combos

ilk and cookies. Burgers and shakes. Wine and cheese. To say food goes well with drinks is an epic understatement. Adding the right sippable to your munchable catapults your culinary experience from mundane to spectacular. And that doesn’t only apply to fine dining—it’s a philosophy that works for all kinds of meals. The trick is not only finding complementary tastes, but also understanding the interplay of contrasting flavors, as well as the aroma and

texture of the food and drink. Wine, famously, has an almost infinite number of pairing possibilities, but beer—particularly craft beer— is gaining a reputation of its own, as are spirits and cocktails, which help stimulate the appetite. And, of course, for the non-drinkers there’s juice, tea, coffee and, well, any liquid you can pour down your gullet. Lavender Scone & Lavender Tea

The taro ’cakes come salved with a “mac-nilla” sauce so good, it stands to strike “syrup” from the dictionary altogether. Wash it down with good ol’ drip coffee and when you’re pau with your first cup, just help yourself to refills. Round it all out when your brunch mate heads off to refill his coffee by stealing a bite of his Haleakala breakfast burrito. - Anu Yagi

Amidst the Kula mist, you wander pictorial gardens. One palm is clutched around a steaming cup of lavender tea, the other around a warm, honey-soaked scone. You’re looking for the perfect spot to sit, sip and nibble. Curled up in a wicker chair in an under-tree alcove? Perched on a hillside on turquoise-

glazed porcelain stools? Sitting full-lotus with a Buddha statue, overlooking the isthmus? You sigh wistfully, spoilt for choice. Good thing you brought your own mug and your first cup of tea (or coffee) is free. - AY Find it at: Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm, Kula

LUNCH Reuben & Fresh-Squeezed Lemonade The origin of the Reuben is a subject of much debate, but I personally don’t give a hoot who invented it—just give me a dang Reuben (with a pickle and a side of slaw). Oh yeah, and a big glass of fresh-squeezed lemonade. Why lemonade? Why not? - AY Find it at: CJ’s Deli & Diner, Jay’s Place, Kimo’s, Lahaina; Cafe 808, Kihei; Marco’s, Kahului; Stillwell’s, Wailuku

PBBH & Almond Milk Peanut butter/banana/honey sandwich and almond milk! There are a few flavor matches in nature that are undeniable and universal like lemon/parsley, salt/pepper, and peanut butter/ banana! The honey ENLIVENS the peanut butter and enhances the sweetness of the banana. The almond milk washes it all down with a satisfying and healthy nut-flavored chill. - Richard Butler, Manager Ritz Carlton

Onion Soup & Ice Tea You might think a one ingredient type soup like onion soup would be boring. Yet somehow its classic ageless flavors, from rich brown broth to caramelized onions and herbs is never insipid. Interpretations vary—some crust it over with a hunk of french bread topped with cheese and baked, and some top it with puff pastry, but the flavor profile and appeal is constant. Ice tea keeps refreshing the palate from the heavy carbs and oily cheeses. - JR Find it at: Cafe O’Lei, Maui Bake Shop, Wailuku; Ruth’s Chris, Wailea & Lahaina

Jambalaya & IPA I’m a huge fan of jambalaya with a nice IPA or double IPA, like our Double Overhead. The hops add a natural spiciness to the beer while at the same time the floral and citrus flavors tame the sharpness. The maltiness, perceived as a bready sweetness, stands up well against the heat of the jambalaya. The flavors play well together by both contrasting and complementing the spices. - Garrett Marrero, Owner, Maui Brewing Co., Lahaina

Pizza & Pilsner My favorite pairing is Scrimshaw Pilsner from North Coast Brewing Company with our butternut squash pizza. The slight sweetness of the butternut squash and caramelized onions is balanced with the slight malty sweetness in the beer. The soft dough is complemented by the toasty qualities of the beer. The warm creamy cheese is contrasted by the beer’s cool, lively carbonation. Finally, both have a subtle herbal component as the pizza is finished with rosemary and the pilsner has a little hoppy bite. - Jason Vendrell, Monkeypod Kitchen, Wailea

DINNER/ DESSERT Beef & Pinot Noir

Bram & Jen from Monkeypod

Start with grilled Maui Cattle grass-fed filet of beef served with creamed Kula corn, chili-peppered green beans, house whipped potato and Hamakua mushroom sauce, and pair it with an earthy Pinot Noir. The weight of the meat is well matched by a medium or medium-plus bodied red, but the Hamakua mushroom sauce really sings when you pair it with a Pinot. Pick a nice mediumbodied wine that has some earthy notes to it from a vintage that wasn’t too warm—a 1993 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux from

Mexican Food & Tequila (and/or Beer) Mexican doesn’t pair easily with wine, but tequila and beer are more than prepared to do the job. The spicy and crisp textures meld perfectly with tequila and dry lagers like a Pacifico or Tecate, especially in hot climates. The spicy heat welcomes the cool, dry beer, while tequila’s citrus notes add a zestiness to the food (and your head). - JR Find it at: Amigos, island wide; Tia Juana’s, Lahaina; Fernando’s, Kahului; Taqueria Cruz, Diamonds, Jawz Tacos, Fred’s, Kihei

Comte Armand for expensive tastes, or a bottle from Cristom of Oregon, Tyler Winery of California or Mt. Difficulty in New Zealand for the rest of us—and you’re off and running. - Jeff Groh, Sommelier, Merriman’s Kapalua

Unagi and Gyoza & Green Tea Unagi is exotic and rich, usually served as an oily filet of eel with its soft skin laid open on sticky rice covered in a sweet teriyaki sauce. Served with gyoza—a bite-size dumpling dipped in a vinegary sauce with a ginger aftertaste. Throw in a third wheel, the bitter green tea chilled with ice, and the palate is clean enough to do it all over again. - JR Find it at: Ramen Ya, Kahului; Genki Sushi, Kahului & Lahaina; Zushi, Lahaina

Our Wailea roll is a California roll topped with yellowtail, salmon, tuna, unagi, scallop, shrimp and ginger sauce, which I think pairs best with our Dewazakua Oka ginjyo. This ginjyo has a delightful flowery bouquet with a touch of pear and melon, which complements but does not overwhelm the many kinds of sashimi on the roll. As a rule, sashimi has a delicate taste. Often with the strong flavor of some sake, you cannot feel the delicateness, so this mild and soft flavor Oka is best for it. Visually the Wailea roll is very colorful with many kinds of sashimi, which evokes the Japanese seasons and the Oka has a flowery bouquet reminiscent of the spring cherry blossoms. - Manabu Katsuyama, Sushi Chef, KAI Wailea

Salmon or Pork & Grenache Cioppino & Lacourt Barbera 2006 This red Italian wine paired with our version of cioppino is wonderful. It’s served with an assortment of Pacific seafood in a red-based broth, spectacularly seasoned and prepared. Add to that the medium bodied, modern, spicy Lacourt Barbera and enjoy. - Charlie Seibert, Manager, Capische, Wailea

Sushi & Wine With sushi, a couple of beverages quickly come to mind, including sake or a Japanese beer like Asahi, Sapporo or Kirin. But how about a wine designed specifically for it? We currently are serving Oroya sushi wine by the glass. Japanese-born winemaker Yoko Sato crafted this Spanish white wine to match the flavors and textures of sushi. - Randy Rinaldi, General Manager, Sansei, Kihei & Kapalua

Filet Mignon & Pinot Noir The Pinot Noir is the lightest in color and flavor from all of the red wines on the list. The filet is a very tender steak with a subtle flavor. The Hartford Court Land’s Edge Pinot Noir is a medium bodied wine with a tinge of spiciness and a mild fruity flavor of cherries and plums from New Zealand. The combination of this spiciness and the subtle meat flavor makes a very enjoyable

I recommend the Comartin Grenache and the wild pacific salmon filet baked with a pommery mustard, caramelized Maui onion crust. I’ve tasted three of Comartin’s 2007 releases, a blend of three vineyards and two single vineyard-designated wines. All of them were flat-out gorgeous. My favorite was the 2007 Santa Barbara County—exciting things happen in the mouth with this wine. It starts out with supple, red fruit flavors of raspberry and pomegranate and then a bit of earth and spiciness flickers on the palate and leads into a long, smooth finish. - Richard Olson, Sommelier, Lahaina Grill, Lahaina

Prime Rib & Petite Sirah The bright pink beef salt-crusted and slowroasted with a horseradish seasoning just drips with richness, while the deep, inky Sirah is full of acidity and tannins to cut that fatty meat. - JR Find it at: Lahaina Prime Rib & Fish Company, Lahaina; Mulligan’s on the Blue, Wailea; Dog & Duck, Kihei; Coconut Grill, Kahului

Shrimp Scampi & White Zinfandel My personal favorite is the shrimp scampi over pasta with white Zin. It’s a great meal in itself, but when you add the light and airy White Zinfandel it really comes together. - Prashant Sharan, Director of Operations, Lulu’s, Kihei

Whole Fish & Pinot In general the idea with wine pairings

is to match the weight or texture of the wine with the weight or texture of the food—how it “feels” on the palate. Those who enjoy red wine with fish (like yours truly) will find the Ancien Pinot Noir from Carneros, California, an excellent pairing with our whole Moi, which is wok-fried and served with a black bean and lychee sauce and Kula vegetables. The exotic flavors of the lychee and mild spiciness of the Asian black sauce are balanced by the ripe fruit flavors and spices. - Karen Christenson, Owner, Mama’s Fish House, Kuau

Lamb & Zinfandel Pair the roasted Australian lamb chops with herbed gnocci and glazed, local butternut squash with the rich and decadent 2009 Opolo Mountain Zinfandel from Paso

Robles, California, and the lamb reaches a whole new level of savory richness. The Opolo Zinfandel dominates the midpalate with butterscotch and raspberry jam flavors, then finishes with rich vanilla and cinnamon spice. This full-bodied Zinfandel also has plenty of ripe black cherry, plum and spice, and is framed by soft tannins and balanced acidity. - Mary Ann Bowman, General Manager, Mala Wailea

Garlic Noodle & Cran-zu Cocktail Garlic Noodles are a staple of Asian restaurant menus. The dry mein noodles dressed only with green onion garnishes may not impress diners by sight alone, but get a whiff of the garlic and you know this dish is special. Raw Ahi & Pino Gris The ahi carpaccio with truffle oil, capers, shaved parmesan and lemon dill aioli is raw fish thinly sliced that literally melts in your mouth. I think it pairs very well with the Solena Pinot Gris, from Oregon. I want a full-flavored white wine, with a hint of residual sugar and no oak. This Pinot Gris continues to wow our guests; it’s a relatively new Oregon winery, and they’re obsessed with organic practices. - Sharon Jahns, Manager, Joe’s, Wailea

Ribeye & Red My favorite pairing would be a nice cut of Maui Cattle ribeye and a bottle of Three Wishes red wine, which is sold for only $2.99. Local beef and a light refreshing wine—the perfect way to end the week or start your weekend. - Alan Sakamura, Meat Team Leader, Whole Foods Market, Kahului

Smoked Salmon & Pinot Grigio The salmon dish takes you through a variety of flavors—smoky from the salmon, sweet from the mango salsa, spicy from the guajillo chili and salty from the finishing salt. Stella Pinot Grigio is a light-bodied wine with some residual sugars that counteract the spiciness and saltiness of the dish. The flavor is clean and dry with a crisp citrus aroma that accentuates the layered flavors. - Executive Chef Marc McDowell, Makena Beach & Golf Resort, Makena

Teriyaki Plate & Kirin I was just talking to my friend today about how my Aunt used to make package lunches for us when we had excursions as kids. We usually had musubi made with teriyaki meat. It was such a treat for us local kids since cafeteria food was always, well, cafeteria food. We hadn’t yet invented Spam musubi, so this was the closest to fast food that was also delicious. - Eunice Kitagawa, Tokyo Tei, Wailuku

Ribs & Porter Beer With the rib and brisket combo you get the best of both worlds—award-winning ribs and great smoked beef brisket. It’s up to you on your side choices, but you can never go wrong with Maui macaroni salad and fresh steamed broccoli. A tall cold draft of Maui Brewing Company’s Coconut Porter (brewed a few blocks away) washes our BBQ down with cool island goodness. - Ed Vorpahl, General Manager, Famous Dave’s, Lahaina

Also found at: Beach Bums, Maalaea; Fat Daddy’s Smokehouse, Kihei

Bass & Chardonnay One of my all-time favorite pairings is the Chilean sea bass (farm raised) and a lush Chardonnay, such as Chateau Montalena. Our miso-glazed sea bass is cured in white organic miso with lemon zest, sake and ginger root. These ingredients really pull the delicate

flavors forward in Chardonnay wines, and the rich buttery texture of sea bass is one of the greatest complements. - Chef David Paul,

The bone-in pork chop is trussed and grilled to perfection. A stir fry of portabello mushrooms, onions, asparagus, eggplant, harusame noodles, hoisin, sweet Thai chili sauce, fish sauce, bean sprouts, jalapeno, thai basil, mint, green onion and cilantro accompanies the dish. Pair it with our tengu fizz: Absolute citron, passion fruit, lime juice, ginger ale and Thai basil. The ginger complement brings so much of these asian flavor components out, and the citron vodka keeps the sweetness in check. - Matt Smith, Executive Chef, Hyatt Maui, Japengo, Lahaina

David Paul’s Island Grill, Lahaina

Mahi Mahi & Chardonnay Coconut Shrimp & Mai Tai Shrimp breaded and fried in a crisp exterior of coconut served with a spicy/sweet dipping sauce is perfect with the rummy punch of the iconic mai tai. Pineapple and citrus notes are complemented by the sweet in the seafood and dipping sauce and balanced by the heaviness of the fried food. - JR Find it at: Mai Tai Lounge, Castaway Cafe, Village Cafe & Sweet Shop, Lahaina; Coconut Grill, Kahului; Three’s Bar & Grill, Kihei

Lamb Shank & Super Tuscan My wine pairing is a braised lamb shank with an herb & fennel ragout, grilled eggplant & zucchini, mushroom risotto paired with Tenuta di Biserno, Insoglio, Super Tuscan, Italy . The region of Tuscany plays a large part in the wine pairing. The area is land locked, a place where vegetables, cattle , & game roam. The vine of the Tuscan grape is also a large part of the land. The two blend, food and wine to make a meal more enjoyable. - Christine Arabatzis, Pita Paradise

Melanzane Alla Parmigiana & Chianti Depending on the Chianti, you can have a light and fruity or medium- to full-bodied wine. Any way will do with this appetizer of layered eggplant and mozzarella that’s gently salty and sweetened with basil and marinara. Add some focaccia or breadsticks and antipasti is on. - JR Find it at: Casanova, Makawao; Casanova Bistro, Kahului

Smoked Marlin Dip & Sauvignon Blanc Smokey marlin and creamy cheese with chopped aromatic vegetables converge in this amazing dip, perfect for smearing over warm pita bread. Pairing it with a crisp and clean Sauvingnon Blanc like the Honig or Babich smooths things out with a bit of tropical fruit and mineral flavor. - JR Find it at: Stella Blues, Kihei

Pizza & Coke The classic marriage of salty and sweet. The doughy cheese element is dense, and the carbonation of the soda fizzes it away for a sucker-punch gut bomb. - JR

The baked mahi mahi Duke’s style is one of our most flavorsome fish preparations. It comes with a garlic, lemon and sweet basil glaze. This would be perfectly paired with the King Estate Gris or Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnay - Shaughn Helliar, General Manager, Duke’s Beach House, Lahaina

Find it at: Alexander’s Fish & Chips (without the wine), Kihei

Vanilla Ice Cream & Sherry Home-spun vanilla bean ice cream topped with PX (Pedro Ximenez) 1982 Grand Reserva Sherry ($20 or so a bottle) makes a great pairing. The creaminess of the ice cream (the lactic acid) links with the carmel and chocolate notes of the sherry (from the tannins or the Oak barrels). You end up with a caramel sundae-tasting dish with a distinctive edge. - Jacques Perwin, General Manager, Spago Wailea, Four Seasons

Chocolate & Cabernet There are so many great wines to complement any of our fondues; cheese and wine are a no-brainer. But I have to mention one of my staff’s favorite: Fourteen Hands Cabernet with our secret “Snickers” fondue—milk chocolate, crunchy peanut butter and caramel, all in the fondue. The cab goes perfectly, bringing out those rich chocolate flavors but balancing it before it gets too sweet. - Cindy DelleFave, The Melting Pot, Lahaina

Sorbet & Ginger Ale I am no mixologist, but if you’ve ever dabbled in infused concoctions you have to try making your own spiked ginger ale. The spicy aroma from ginger and star anise and sweetness from the vanilla is balanced perfectly with the freshness of the mint and lime. A little tropical sweetness from the lychee sorbet coats the palate and seems to wash away any memory of your preceding swig. - Chef Isaac Bancaco, Humuhumunukunukuapua‘a, Grand Wailea ■ For complete dining listings and more images, visit mauitime.com and our food blog, mauidish.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1440a

Beyond Borders Thought the closing of the Dairy Road store was the end of book-buying on Maui? Think again “

T

oday we of the civilized world enjoy unique wealth more precious than gold—our wealth of accumulated knowledge in printed form,” writes Frances Rogers in his 1960 book Painted Rock to Printed Page: The Story of Writing and Printing. My copy is a ruddy little hardcover—still in its tattered sleeve— riddled with age spots and emitting a musk that makes my eyes itch. Still, I treasure it and will bury my nose in the bloom of its binding nonetheless (you have to peer extra close when allergic eyes swell shut). Because whether newly inked or timeworn, books have an unmistakable aroma— like rain on asphalt, sex and candy or freshcut grass. And like sharks in chummed-up water, the heady smell alone can send bibliophilic folk (like me) into a frenzy. My obsession began at the Kahului Public Library, with mom. I’d leave with my toddler arms and chin stretched around the tallest pile of take-home reads I could muster. And every night I fell asleep with the lights on (and still do). Soon, I was assuming the same position at rummage sales and thrift stores, and before I knew it I was a book hoarder. For those who are likewise afflicted—and even to those who are casual readers (I have one friend who says he only ever reads when in jail)—last week’s announcement that Borders is closing its Dairy Road location by the end of May came as a sad shock. Nearly $1.3 billion in debt, on February 16, 2011 Borders Group, Inc. announced it had filed for reorganization relief under Chapter 11. The company received court approval for a store reduction program, and plans to close 30 percent of their locations nationwide. On Twitter, @mauilibrarian2 wrote to me, “Borders closing isn’t all about buying books. [It’s] sad because we’re losing a vibrant PLACE that serves as a barometer of who we are and what we value.” It’s a kind and true sentiment that can be said of any hub of knowledge in the heart of a town, corporate or no. Yet people seem to be lamenting the store’s impending closure as if its the end of book-selling on Maui altogether. To the contrary—there are still lots of places to buy books (other than the Internet). Borders Express remains open at the Queen Kaahumanu Center and, of course, there’s the Gaussian glow of the big, new Barnes and Noble in Lahaina. But nearly every grocery store, touristy one-stop and museum gift shop has a small selection of titles, too—everything from trashy poolside

reads to area guides to local lit for keiki, plus genre-specific selections at certain stores. Looking for a do-it-yourselfer how-to? Head to Lowes or Home Depot. History buff? The Bailey House Museum offers 10 percent

and enthusiasts. Her prices are always a smidgen lower than the Internet average, and range from $1-1,000. Her vintage Hawaiiana collection is robust, and I found Max Freedom Long’s The Secret Science

Whether newly inked or timeworn, books have an unmistakable aroma—like rain on asphalt, sex and candy or fresh-cut grass. off for members. New Age ideas tickle your fancy? Green Lotus or Lotus Heart Book & Gift Shop will guide your way. Hedging your bets by getting healthy? Down to Earth, Mana Foods and Whole Foods can help you out. And, for religious devotees, there are shops like Lilies of the Field Catholic Bookshop and Kihei Christian Bookstore. And as for used books (in addition to local thrift stores) there are two—very special— bibliomaniac enablers on-isle: the Maui Friends of the Library (MFOL) behind the old Puunene School near the sugar mill, and JoAnn Carrol’s Old Lahaina Book Emporium, nestled in a sweet little alley off Front Street. “Part boneyard for titles with osteoporosis-ridden spines, part monument to the infinite potential of Gutenberg’s invention, the place is one of Maui’s quintessential hidden gems,” wrote MauiTime’s Kate Bradshaw, in a July 2009

Behind Miracles, a book about kahuna magic, which I’d long been searching for. Though Borders is technically competition, Carrol says that the store’s closing won’t do her any good (the two West side express locations at the Lahaina Cannery Mall and Whalers Village recently closed, too). She says used book shops like hers thrive off the flow of those who are “eager to grab the new releases, but don’t keep them.” Ultimately, she predicts, books will become obsolete entirely, with the big push toward e-books and portable readers like the Kindle. So maybe Borders mourners are right. Perhaps this marks the beginning of a new chapter— not just the end of book selling on Maui, but book selling period. I like to think books—and bookshops—will survive. Because when I look into my crystal ball, all I see is my reflection. The reflection of a book

feature about the Puunene institution. The MFOL says their “qualified estimate is in excess of 180,000 books to choose from” and they charge just a dime per book (other than a few rare titles, which are still moderately priced). Meanwhile Carrol’s shop seems ripped from my REM, with leaning, laden shelves creating a labyrinth I wouldn’t mind getting lost in. Carrol says her clientele runs the gamut, from regulars to visiting collectors

lover who may read a lot online, but who will never relinquish reveling in the tangible page. Even if just for the smell. ■

ELIGH

Grey Crow (Legendary Music; 2010). Eligh has learned a lot after five years of sobriety, and the Californian’s latest solo album proves it. “Find Yourself” graphically follows a young artist as he gets caught up in an iron grip of addiction, battles his demons and looks forward with cautious optimism. (It also showcases a great sample from the Talking Heads.) Eligh’s rapid-fire MC style is quick, witty and keeps you on your toes, while the content is positive and motivating without being sappy. “Miss Busdriver,” for example, pays homage to Eligh’s aunt from Oakland, who inspired him. (“She actually liked ‘The Simple Man’ song/This woman ran strong/Her energy is long/ For decades and beyond.”). And the music underlying this album is so good that it makes you want to keep hitting the repeat button. “Love Ov My Life” is a soothing, almost indie-rock tune that meshes with Eligh’s light-speed lyricism. And the infusion of Eligh’s quick rapping with staccato violins in “Angel of Death” and “Suffocate” is excellent. The album’s impressive guest list features many of the MCs in his group, Living Legends, including Maui resident The Grouch. All of which begs the question: why is this in the used section? - Ben Lowenthal

Slick legal thriller saves Matthew McConaughey from rom com hell The Lincoln Lawyer

★★★★★

Rated R/119 min.

M

ick Haller (Matthew McConaughey) is a slick, sleazy lawyer whose office is the back of his Lincoln. In the courtroom he has a reputation for getting clients who’ve committed heinous crimes out of jail, which is the reason his wife (Marisa Tomei) has left him. Now, a seemingly open and shut case involving a rich kid (Ryan Phillippe) accused of assaulting a prostitute has landed in Haller’s lap and looks to land Haller publicity and a huge paycheck. Of course, things aren’t that simple and doubts about his client’s innocence cause Haller to play sleuth and, ultimately, question the moral implications of his profession. After a decade of starring in lazy romantic comedies and tossing aside his dramatic talent (similar to the way Burt Reynolds

ruined his credibility as a once-promising actor), here is McConaughey’s return to solid dramatic ground. Years of shirtless turns in stinkers like Fool’s Gold and Surfer Dude and reports of nude bongo playing have overshadowed his terrific, breakout starring turn in A Time to Kill. It’s startling to be reminded how good McConaughey is. And, I’m happy to report, his much-discussed abs make only a quick cameo appearance, rather than their usual co-starring role.

Instead, McConaughey shares the screen with some terrific actors. Tomei adds needed punch to an underdeveloped subplot about Haller’s home life, William H. Macy is reliably excellent as Haller’s right hand man, Michael Pena scorches the screen during his two scenes as an unjustly incarcerated prisoner and everyone from John Leguizamo to former Shawshank warden Bob Gunton shine in tiny but pivotal roles. Great courtroom dramas make the

audience feel like they’re watching the story from the jury box, and that’s something this movie pulls off. The case and the story in general go in jolting directions, augmented by stylishly shot flashback sequences. The camera doesn’t linger too much on the crimes in question, but the film has a focus on violence against women that feels nearly gratuitous—the brief descriptions are enough to make the point but instead we get jarring reenactments of sexual battery. Normally, multiple endings are a sign of a filmmaker’s indecision, but here the shocking, layered climaxes cleverly wrap up loose ends and finish the story with some needed finesse. This is the second film made from a Michael Connelly novel, after the uneven Clint Eastwood thriller Blood Work. Haller is a great role for McConaughey and I wouldn’t be opposed to sequels. Note to McConaughey: keep playing smart but flawed attorneys—and keep your shirt on. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1440f

oodies, this is another one of those weeks to remember. Kick it off with four courses paired with Morgan Cellars wines tonight (Thursday, March 24) at David Paul’s Island Grill. “The menu for this dinner reflects the eclectic blending of contemporary cuisines,” says Chef David Paul. “The rich cheese tart in the first course, the trio second course featuring Japanese ingredients, roasted quail and finally lavender chocolate mousse.” (662-3000; davidpaulsislandgrill.com) Tomorrow (Friday, March 25) you’ll have to go back-to-back with the Mi Sueno wine pairing dinner at Mala Ocean Tavern and the Fresh! party at I’o. “We’re focusing on using hand-selected specialty liquors for true depth and history in our new cocktail menu,” says GM Sol Tao, adding that local ingredients make these “farm to drink libations.” (667-9394; malaoceantavern.com / 661-8422; iomaui.com) Monday (March 28, 5:30pm) is your chance to see food paired with Scotch and cigars at the Glenlivet Scotch Dinner at the Grand Wailea’s Humu. (800-888-6100; grandwailea.com/resort-dining/humu.cfm) On Tuesday (March 29), take your gastronomy to charitable heights and eat at Flatbread in Paia to support Tots R Us Preschool. There will be some great auction items and the debut of the Tots R Us Cookbook (and take-out pizzas count too). (579-8989; flatbreadcompany. com) Finally, Wednesday (March 30; 6pm) is Slow Foods Maui’s monthly Taste Education event held at UHMC’s Class Act, featuring mixology by Melissa Panzanni and Ocean Vodka. Wild Things Friday (March 25), 9pm, Three’s Bar & Grill, Kihei; Saturday (March 26), 10pm, Casanova, Makawao

Anthropomorphism is a nono these days. Sure, it can be fun in its literary usage, but scientists argue that applying human characteristics to animals degrades our objectivity in ethology. But what about reverse-anthropomorphism? In the same way we can’t help but apply our human dispositions to flora, fauna and inanimate objects (e.g. Pet Rocks and the weather), we in turn want to PHOTO BY SEAN MICHAEL HOWER embody elemental and animal attributes ourselves. Or at least, animal names. Case in point: some of our favorite Maui musicians. This Friday (March 25), hop over to Three’s Bar & Grill to see Rabbitt and The Propers (featuring the one and only Wolf on bass), plus special guests. They’re playing a benefit for our stricken homies in Japan and all donations collected at the door and via the silent auction will benefit the Red Cross. (879-3133; threescateringmaui.com) And on Saturday (March 26), the men of MOTH turn their ommatidium to Casanova for what’s sure to be a huge spectacle worth buzzing Upcountry to see. (572-0220; casanovamaui.com)

From Heart to Finish Saturday (March 26), 8-11am, Keopualani Park, Kahului, free

In my day, the most out of breath you would get from playing videogames was in the beginning, when you had to blow on the cartridge to get it to work. Now, of course, you can use your whole body as a video-game controller. What hasn’t changed is the importance of a balanced diet and exercise. Of course, when I was younger I didn’t see it that way; I thought my parents were being mean poopie-heads for not letting me gorge on candy and then flop in front of the SNES all day. Now I know better…kinda. Anyway, if you want the youngins in your life to understand why they can’t just vegetate in front of their gaming console of choice all day, head over to Keopuolani Park this Saturday for the American Heart Association’s 13th Annual Maui Heart Walk. It’s a great opportunity to show kids that being healthy can be fun, especially with this year’s Keiki Fun Zone, featuring activities, trivia, raffles, a jumping castle and most importantly: models of what happens when bodies aren’t in tune. QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions on page 7

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Your connection with someone is your connection with them. You don’t need anyone else’s permission, opinion, or approval. Even though having those things is nice (and there can be consequences when you don’t get them), they’re not actually necessary. Make sure your stubborn independence and determination win the day, because there may be unreasonable obstacles, rules, or limitations placed on you regarding you and another consenting adult human being. Ultimately, the decision about whether and how you relate to someone is yours, and following your heart, gut, and conscience must take precedence over someone else’s two cents. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Everyone exaggerates a little, from time to time. But when tall tales (or inflated resumés) can potentially get someone into hot water, it might be your duty to drag them down to earth— gently, if possible. It’s no fun to pop someone’s balloon, I know—but it’s even less fun to watch them sail so high into the stratosphere they can’t breathe, or to observe them plummeting from such a height. Since no one else seems to be doing the dirty work of keeping a fanciful friend’s feet on the ground, that lousy job has fallen to you. Get to it. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Just a reminder: life’s not fair. Expecting it to be only leads to disappointment. However, despite that sad reality, you should strive to invest equity and equality in all things you have a substantial say in. There’s no compelling reason to perpetuate the injustices we all encounter every day, when you have the power to create a situation where they don’t play much of a factor. Since this week you have a significant amount of power to determine whether others are pleasantly surprised by a sweet situation, or have their cynicism reinforced, strive for the former, not the latter. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Everyone has a friend who enjoys taking charge, and occasionally makes people feel like bit actors (or worse, props) in a play written, produced, and directed by them. While being part of these productions can sometimes be tremendous fun, it can also be a terrible drag, especially when your own preferences are overruled or dismissed. There’s no need to dredge up your own inner diva here, but sometimes simply standing firm and insisting on your own way—especially when it really has minimal impact on anyone besides you—is the only reasonable way to go. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Don’t let a miscommunication, missed connection, or spasm of insecurity or shyness keep you from what might very well be a tremendous opportunity (or at least learning experience). Passing up something so potentially cool because of a weak moment is something you’ll kick yourself over for ages, if you let it happen. Don’t! Suck it up, slap a smile onto your face, and seize whatever chances come your way, whether or not you’re actually feeling it. Remember, the biggest source of regret for most people isn’t the stuff they did—it’s the stuff they never did. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) You’ve already discovered that when you try to impose your standards—especially regarding tidiness, cleanliness, or organization—on someone else, things don’t tend to work out too well for more than a short-term arrangement. Anyone can clean up their act for a little while (if they’re a guest in your home, for example), but requiring them to change their whole way of being isn’t particularly reasonable. Asking them to meet a basic standard in these departments is fair—but your standard tends to be far above that, even if it feels perfectly normal and reasonable to you. Take it down a notch and cut them a whole bunch more slack, won’t you? LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Even though you’re generally exceptionally adept at

seeing both sides of a picture, you’re not necessarily as good at wrapping your head around someone else’s needs when they’re ones you don’t share. You may not be able to understand why someone needs the things they say they do, but it’s not your place to argue with them or stand in their way. You must simply take them at their word and let them do what they must. If it’s not something you can tolerate, then walk away, but don’t try to tell someone not to feel the way they feel—that never works out, and just makes you look like an ass.

1. E-mailing 2. Thyroid cancer 3. Electric vehicle charging stations

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) You’re usually pretty good about keeping your nose out of people’s business, even when they (accidentally or on purpose) wave it in front of your face. Every once in a while, though, something happens that tempts you to interfere, even though rationally you know it’s not likely you’ll be helpful, and in fact may make matters worse. Such thoughts don’t erase the temptation, though. However, since just such a compelling and dangerous situation is likely to appear this week, you must marshal all your willpower, rally distractions, and enlist help to just stay out of it. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC.21) Boredom with life is not something many Sagittarians feel particularly often, if ever at all. However it does afflict certain people you know. While you can’t force them to take an interest in the things that keep you stimulated and excited about life, you can inject a little more joy and adventure into their lives, if you choose to. They may not always be open to it, but don’t let past rebuffs deter you from trying again. This week, most everyone you know will be gratefully receptive to just about any well-intentioned distraction from ennui you provide. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Everyone has embarrassing secret worries and fears. The best part about such things is that almost every time, saying them out loud to someone else greatly diminishes their power (even if it’s embarrassing in the moment) and sometimes even makes them go away completely. You might not know this, because Capricorns are notoriously closemouthed about such mortifying insecurities, and thus rarely benefit from the blessed benefits of sharing them with someone else. This week, break that pattern. Gather your nerve, choose a trusted friend wisely, and then confess your private fears, and watch them (at least mostly) melt away. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Clean up your own messes. While it’s easy to put off such unpleasant tasks, and simple to decide that anyone complaining or stewing about them is just being too persnickety and anal, the simple fact of the matter is that it’s your mess, and it’s simply not fair to force someone else to clean it up for you. This is a rough lesson to learn, and sometimes those trying to teach it to you are less than gentle or subtle. However, that shouldn’t keep you from learning it nevertheless, even if the messes are more subtle or intangible than spilled milk, or more annoying to clean up than spray-on glitter. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Most people throughout history who vocally questioned the status quo were called, essentially, “crazy.” Some, of course, were quite out of their minds—but many were simply privy to a truth different from whatever version was most popular at the time, and were either unable or unwilling to keep silent about it. This difficult role has frequently fallen to you Fish, who are often able to see things in different ways than the rest of us. While it may be tempting to simply bite your tongue and avoid the criticism or dismay of those who disagree with you, speaking your truth is one of the most powerful and important things you can do. Please have the courage and integrity to do it, especially this week.
