a Siberian tiger that had previously attacked a zookeeper escaped and mauled three people, killing one of them. It was later determined that the fence around the animal’s enclosure was nearly four feet shorter than the recommended height. And so Mollinedo moved to Hawaii to take the reins at the Honolulu Zoo, which this week was refused re-accreditation by the national Association of Zoos and Aquariums because of “concerns regarding the filling of vacant personnel positions [and] repairs and upgrades of animal exhibits.” So much for third time’s a charm.
H
awaii has more prisoners than its jails can house. There are two possible solutions: have fewer prisoners, or ship some off island. Since the former would require a radical move like, oh, decriminalizing drugs, we’re stuck with the latter. Currently, we send our excess inmates to three prisons in Eloy, Arizona owned by the private Corrections Corporation of America (CCA). The deal with CCA, you may recall, was the subject of a scathing report issued in January by State Auditor Marion Higa. Citing a lack of both accountability and transparency, Higa called the arrangement “fundamentally flawed.” Add lawsuits filed against CCA by Hawaii inmates claiming to have been threatened, beaten and sexually assaulted by guards, and it’s clear something has to change. Fortunately, the state’s contract with Eloy and CCA expires June 30. Gov. Abercrombie has said he ultimately wants to end the outsourcing entirely, but until the infrastructure is in place that’s obviously a pipe dream. So, earlier this month, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) put out a request for

f you think it’s time for the government to go easy on Willie Nelson, you’re not alone. Hudspeth County, Texas prosecutor C.R. “Kit” Bramblett agrees. Bramblett was tasked with recommending punishment for the iconic troubadour and Maui resident, who was busted for pot possession when border patrol agents searched his tour bus late last year. Bramblett’s proposal? A $100 fine and community service—in the form of a courtroom performance of the song “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain.” “You can bet your ass I’m not going to be mean to Willie Nelson,” Bramblett told CNN. But Judge Becky Dean-Walker quickly quashed the idea. “My court is not a jester court,” she said. “I understand that people are star stuck—I’m not one of them.” Instead, it sounds like Willie will simply have to pay the fine if he pleads guilty, and won’t even have to show up to do so. Too bad—that’s one concert that would’ve been woth a trip to the Mainland. ■

NEWS OF THE WEIRD THONGS OF FREEDOM Gen. Than Shwe of Myanmar, leader of Asia’s most authoritarian regime, made a rare public appearance in February— dressed in a woman’s sarong. Most likely, according to a report on AOL News, he was challenging the country’s increasingly successful “panty protests” in which females opposed to the regime toss their underwear at the leaders or onto government property to, according to superstition, weaken the oppressors. (Men wear sarongs, too, in Myanmar, but the general’s sarong was of a design worn by women.) A Web site run by the protesters urges sympathetic women worldwide to “post, deliver or fling” panties at any Burmese embassy.
FROM BAD TO NURSE Nurse Sarah Casareto resigned in February from Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, and faced possible criminal charges, after allegedly swiping the painkiller fentanyl from her patient’s IV line as he was undergoing kidney-stone surgery. When he complained, she reportedly told him to “man up.”
SWAMP RATS ARE SO HOT RIGHT NOW New Orleans clothing designer Cree McCree, an ardent environmentalist, ordinarily would never work with animal fur, but the Louisiana state pest, the nutria (swamp rat), is culled in abundance by hunters, who leave the carcasses where they fall. Calling its soft-brown coat “guilt-free fur that belongs on the runway instead of at the bottom of the bayou,” McCree has encouraged a small industry of local
designers to create nutria fashions—and in November went big-time with a New York City show dubbed “Nutria-palooza.”
TECH HICKS In late 2010, a Georgia utility contractor discovered an elaborate “Internet-controlled network of web-accessible cameras” and three shotguns aimed into a food-garden plot on a Georgia Power Company right-ofway (as reported by the Augusta Chronicle in January). The Georgia Wildlife Resources Division and U.S. Homeland Security took a look, but by then, the structure had been moved. Homeland Security speculated that the set-up was to keep feral hogs away from the food stock.

A bill that would finally establish a medical marijuana dispensary in Hawaii is still alive, and Maui Sen. Kalani English likes its chances PHOTO BY PETR BROZ
H
awaii has had a medical marijuana law on the books since 2000—but that’s still all we have. While states like California and Colorado have set up successful (and lucrative) dispensaries, Hawaii patients are forced to either grow their own medicine or buy it on the black market. There are a number of reasons for this, but eight years under Republican Gov. Linda Lingle—who blasted the medical law, vetoed efforts to expand and improve it and hid behind federal prohibition—didn’t help. To borrow a phrase from Gov. Neil Abercrombie, it’s a new day, and this legislative session featured a handful of medical pot bills. Most have gone up in smoke, but the one that’s still rolling may be the most important: SB1458, introduced by Maui Senator Kalani English, would set up “a comprehensive five-year medical marijuana distribution pilot program in an unspecified county” (an earlier version of the bill specified Maui County). “I took this up because I saw people who were suffering, sometimes in the last months of their life. And they were asking, ‘Where can I get my medicine?’” says English. He adds that he had to “make the bill dripping with money” to give it broad appeal in these lean economic times. Naturally, dispensaries (or “compassion

The bill cleared the Senate and is

admits it’s been an arduous process. It’s gone through many revisions, and some changes—such as reducing the scope from a statewide system to an isolated pilot program and forcing dispensaries to make a complete patient list available to law enforcement at any time “without
notice”—have pot advocates up in arms. English emphasizes that the bill isn’t finalized, and says anything that’s been added or removed is still open for discussion. “Everything’s on the table,” he says. Of course, the bill has staunch opponents as well—and not just in the legislature. Last month, at the behest of Maui Police Chief Gary Yabuta, on-duty MPD officers handed out anti-marijuana pamphlets outside WalMart in Kahului. English says MPD overstepped its bounds. “Their job is to enforce the laws that exist, not to pass out propaganda trying to change the law,” he says. “It seems like law enforcement is trying to suppress what many citizens would deem OK.” Though SB1458 is the only legislation that looks to have a chance this session, English says other bills—dealing with questions like how much marijuana a patient can possess, and whether oversight of the law should be transferred from the Department of Public Safety to the Department of Health—can be revived next year. “Keep writing your representatives,” he says, “and letting them know this is an important issue for you, and for Hawaii.” ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1441u

HERE WE. GO AGAIN.... Two years after the Supreme Court sank the Superferry, lawmakers are considering a bill that could bring it back—on the taxpayers’ dime BY JACOB SHAFER.
10 MARCH 31, 2011
The Superferry was a colossal boondoggle, yet no one denies that a well-run, financially viable interisland ferry service would be a boon for Hawaii.
FROM THE ARCHIVES THURSDAY, MARCH 12
T
o say the Hawaii Superferry was flawed is like saying the Titanic had minor iceberg issues. The litany of problems—legal, environmental, cultural—that made the the boat a colossal boondoggle and ultimately led the state Supreme Court to order it out of the water in early 2009 have been well documented. At the same time, no one denies that a well-run, carefully launched and financially viable inter-island ferry service would be a boon for Hawaii. Which raises two questions: Is such a thing even possible? And is SB1239—which was passed by the state House earlier this month and, as of this writing, is pending in the Senate Ways and Means Committee—a step in the right direction? The bill would create a new entity within the Department of Transportation to oversee statewide ferry operations and, “engage in communications with the United States Department of Transportation and the United States Maritime Administration relating to federal funding assistance and the possible purchase or lease of the former high-speed ferry vessel that operated in waters of the state or other available suitable vessels to commence its operations.” Basically, taxpayers would foot the bill for a ferry reboot, including potentially buying back the former Superferry vessels— the Alakai and her never-launched sister ship, the Huakai—which were purchased out of bankruptcy by the federal government. The bill was introduced by Maui Rep. Joe Souki, who was instrumental—along with then-Governor Linda Lingle—in pushing the Superferry through without a completed Environmental Impact Statement, a decision that precipitated its demise. Last year, Souki championed a bill that would have studied the viability of a statewide ferry service, but it fizzled quickly and quietly. The current bill cruised through the House with little resistance, receiving only token opposition from the Republican minority. That’s curious, because even the Department of Transportation has serious reservations. In testimony provided to the Senate
transportation committee, DOT said it would support a statewide ferry “only if it were done through the United States military or a private-public partnership.” Further, DOT said it “has no expertise or resources to operate and maintain” a ferry system. Meanwhile, Kalbert Young, director of the Department of Budget and Finance, raised concerns about the system’s economic viability. SB1239 would create a special fund to pay for infrastructure and operations, but Young said it’s “difficult to determine whether [the ferry] would be financially self-sustaining.” Sea Link of Hawaii—a private company that operates a ferry between Maui and Molokai under the auspices of the Public Utilities Commission—warned that the bill would “immediately cripple” its service. Sea Link also branded high-speed vessels like the ones used by Hawaii Superferry “very fuel-inefficient.” “While the Superferry is a technological wonder, it simply is too expensive to build, maintain and operate on an inter-island route,” wrote Sea Link general manager David Jung in Senate testimony. “It would be comparable to mandating a state-operated airline fly only supersonic Concorde aircraft between our islands.”
T
he bill does have supporters. The Hawaii Farm Bureau suggested it could begin “a new chapter” for statewide agriculture by creating “an efficient, reliable and affordable transportation system.” And—based on the public outcry that followed the Superferry’s demise—there are many residents who want an alternative to the airlines and the de facto shipping monopoly of Young Brothers. A “Save the Hawaii Superferry!” Facebook group created in 2009 has more than 5,000 members, and when MauiTime ran a story that gave the vessel failing grades across the board shortly before the Supreme Court ruling (see sidebar), much of the feedback that flowed in was vehemently pro-Superferry. But just because people want something doesn’t mean it’s viable. The Superferry never managed to break even—let alone turn a profit—forcing CEO John Lehman (an investment banker and former Secretary of the Navy under President Reagan) to pump in
his own money. Then there are the environmental concerns—including collisions with whales and the spread of invasive species— that Hawaii Superferry never adequately addressed. And who can forget the scene that unfolded on Kauai, when hundreds of protesters paddled out into Nawiliwili Harbor to “greet” the ferry on its maiden voyage from Oahu? The scene was described dramatically in The Superferry Chronicles, a gripping and thoroughly researched exposé by writer/filmmaker Koohan Paik and activist Jerry Mander that’s required reading for anyone who wants to understand the issue and the players involved: “The Superferry appeared on the horizon, headed straight at us,” reads the book’s opening paragraph. “One-and-a-half times the length of a football field, five stories high, the uninvited menace had burned nearly 6,000 gallons of diesel from Honolulu to Kauai.”
N
ow that the state is considering getting into the high-speed ferry business, there are pressing concerns. Chief among them: can a venture that wasn’t profitable under private stewardship succeed when run by a government that’s more than $1 billion in the red? And yet, as Paik and Mander put it, the “central problem” with the Superferry was that it was launched with ulterior motives that “had little or nothing to do with the needs of local communities.” “In our opinion, an inter-island ferry in Hawaii should probably be operated as a public utility, like the bus service or the water department, to ensure that the welfare of the people [and] the protection of the wildlife on land and in sea are at the top of the list of priorities,” reads the conclusion to The Superferry Chronicles. It sounds like, in principle at least, some of Hawaii Superferry’s harshest critics think a bill like SB1239 could be a solution. If it passes— that’s far from a sure thing, though even if it dies supporters may revive it next year—it’ll be interesting to see whether public officials and the people of Hawaii ultimately agree. ■

O
n March 12, 2009, MauiTime contributor Rob Parsons gave the Hawaii Superferry a harsh “progress report.” Less than a week later, the Supreme Court ruled the boat never should have been launched without a completed Environmental Impact Statement and service was halted— permanently as it turned out. Here’s an excerpt from Parsons’s story:
After more than a full year of operation, it’s time to give the albatross of interisland travel known as the Hawaii Superferry a progress report. Has the high-speed ferry service given indications it can be profitable in the long term? Has there been justification for Gov. Linda Lingle leading the charge, with state legislators close behind, to rewrite the state’s environmental laws to allow Superferry to operate? Has the entire state been taken for a choppy, 40 knots per hour, $45 million ride?

Sushi And Beyond New Hyatt eatery takes Asian fusion to a new level, with a local twist
R
I
t’s not often that I get to say we’ve imported a restaurant from the Mainland and improved its concept. So it was a pleasant surprise to see that Hyatt Maui’s Japengo invested the time to get it right, so much so I think they’ve upgraded the product. Not that Japengo needed an upgrade—the Hyatt La Jolla California’s version is considered one of San Diego’s top restaurants—but the Maui version (which is offering 15 percent off for all kama‘aina) is staking its own claim. Part of what makes Japengo special is the team: Executive Chef Matt Smith, Chef Gevin Utrillo and sushi chef David
Both stand up beautifully on their own, but I’d recommend combining them into a mouthwatering Saimese twin. Under the guidance of Chef Jay, I started with sashimi and sushi paired with some of Japengo’s cleverly named cocktails. The moriawase is a work of art, a platter laden with chef picks like Scottish salmon, Spanish mackerel, mirugai (clam) and madai (king snapper). Japengo features fresh wasabi root from the Big Island; you grate it Japanese-style against a shark skin board and “sweep” off the spoils with a little bamboo brush. Fresh wasabi doesn’t have the kick that the green blob does and is much more subtle. Garnishes Garnish of daikon shaped into little nests, shiso leaf here n and there and a whole fish posed with its edible flesh ready for e the plucking pluck make the platter a true experience for the senses. expe On my visit, the chef paired the v moriawase moriawa with the rappongi fling. The Th cooling cucumber, ginger ale a and dry lime and sake linger lin on the palate, balancing balanci the fish flavor. The 50/50 roll is a California roll on the inside Califo with kanpachi, Scottish k salmon salmo and lemons sliced and layered over the top. l The lemons are a treat to l eat, whole skin and all. w It’s not n often you can devour devo them this way, o and they have a brilliant hef utrill japengo c effect. effe Chef Jay says he uses us Scottish salmon because of its distinct, exquisite flavor. The big roll is Japengo’s Japengo version of shrimp tempura, accented with tobanjan, a spicy carries through to the dishes and table bean condiment that I’m now seeking in settings: muted brown pottery, river Asian markets for my pantry. Born Free Newly formed funk collective manages to make everything cool—even their Nazi-inspired name
ALBUM OF THE WEEK
The Freeradicals Projekt freeradicalsprojekt.com Next gig: Friday (April 1), 6pm, Maui Thing main stage, Wailuku First Friday, Market St., free
T
he Freeradicals Projekt’s groove is irresistibly danceable, their lyrics consummately conscious. Convivial synergy embodied, their sound is a neoteric fusion of funk, hip-hop, jazz, soul and world music. And perhaps most uniquely—from the band’s name, to their formation, to their continuing creative process—they exercise a modus operandi of progressive inversion, flipping every coin to its most positive face. Take their moniker. Sure, “free radicals” sounds cool, but in biology (while essential for numerous biological functions like eradicating bacteria on an intracellular level), free radicals are commonly understood to be disease-causing agents, and theory suggests they are at the crux of the aging process. Guitarist Rama Covarrubias (the band’s leader, oft lovingly referred to as “Jefe”) came up with the name years before the band formed. “If the body is a system and free radicals work against that system, The Freeradicals Projekt works against the system,” he explains. (You know, Babylon, The Man, the Matrix, the Machine, Crazy Baldheads and whatnot.) And if you find the “k” in Projekt jarring, you’re getting the right sensation. Intrigued by the “masters of propaganda” of mid-20th century Germany and Russia, Covarrubias studied their work, noting their usage of the letter “k” versus “c.” “It really makes you notice the word,” he says. “So what if we use what they’ve done, but for good? It’s not about control, it’s about liberation.” Leave it to a funky, multiethnic band like The Freeradicals Projekt to take happy inspiration from the Nazis. Even the band’s genesis involves efficacious reversal. Two years ago—frustrated by the difficulty of finding the right chemistry with fellow musicians—Covarrubias decided to take a break from the band scene and go it alone. Writing music independently he realized he “could only do so much myself, and playing out with others is the difference between—excuse me—sex and jerking off.” Realizing he had to “build the band backwards,” he vowed to let serendipity be his guide and only work with people who had a symbiotic vibe. Enter MC Francisco “Frankie” Perez, a talented freestyle rapper who saw

Covarrubias at a gig and approached him about collaborating. Soon after, Covarrubias was captivated by the strong sax sounds of Ami Shorr and (after some prodding and fortuitous happenstance) along with Perez, they began jamming as a three piece. The addition of percussionist Michael Lawton was a natural progression “because they’re BFFs” laughs vocalist Shea Derrick, who joined in mid-December after connecting with the group via the Source festival. In fact, the band’s large studio at the Haiku Town Center had, for several years prior, been a free-form jam space for Covarrubias and Lawton. The ear candy alchemy is rounded out with DJ Del Sol, who also bookends the band’s sets with his beats. The group’s mutual musical magic was evident from the onset, and their first gig with the complete lineup (just two days after Derrick joined) was in front of a packed house at Charley’s, opening for Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real. Since—among numerous, beautifullyreceived shows—last month, the band did a live radio broadcast on Mana‘o—a sweaty, soulful session I was privileged to sit in on.
The band says its sound is inspired by Sly and the Family Stone, Marvin Gaye, Lee Perry, Groove Armada and John Coltrane, among others, and the “passionate vocals [of] Ella Fitzgerald.” I say you can add to that spicy concoction the traditional-meetsurban “jipjop flamenkill” of Barcelona’s Ojos de Brujo, amped-up elements of the ever-introspective Zero 7 and the melodic moments of Gorillaz. And, it should be noted, their performance chops are aggrandized by the gregarious band members’ star-quality looks and stage presence. Complex and impossibly cohesive for only being at the threshold of their formation, The Freeradicals Projekt is a funky force music lovers will do well to pay attention to. Songs like “Pipe Smoke” and “Movement” are resounding, roiling and anthemic, replete with lyrics that the band hopes “challenge you to think.” And true to their MO, they make mood-changing music that will turn around even the downtrodden, uplifting both body and spirit. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1441ae
Feast of Wire (Quarterstick Records; 2003). What kind of music does Calexico play? That’s a tough question. Part country, part Latin, part jazz and part rock, Feast of Wire refuses to conform to just one genre. The Arizona-based band covers wide musical territory with a lot of instruments. “Sunken Waltz,” for example, has a classical guitar, accordion, steel guitar and tight harmonies. Joey Burns softly sings about lonesome, desolate places and people. (“Now news, no regrets/Tossed a Susan B. over my shoulder/And prayed it would rain and rain/Submerge the whole western states.”) Later, in “Not Even Stevie Nicks,” Burns paints a picture in stark colors: “With a head like a vulture/And heart full of hornets/ He drives off a cliff/And into the blue.” Feast of Wire also touches upon a variety of Latin genres like mariachi and cumbia, and nearly every song in the album features an exotic percussion instrument. “Guero Canelo” is an oddity, combining Latin rhythms with electronic vocal modifications. And while many of the songs in Feast of Wire carry Calexico’s distinct Southwestern flavor, others move outside the genre. “Crumble” is an unadulterated jazz number, shedding all traces of the desert. Finally, the band mixes it all—synths, a jazz horn and a drum beat—together in “Attack el Robot! Attack!” So what kind of music does Calexico play? Well, just about all of them. - Ben Lowenthal

Blown Up Jake Gyllenhaal explodes every eight minutes—and you won’t want to look away Source Code

A
bewildered soldier (Jake Gyllenhaal) wakes up on a train, meets a beautiful traveler (Michelle Monaghan) and talks to her for eight minutes before the train explodes. Next thing he knows he’s receiving some bewildering instructions: go back to the train and discover who planted the bomb—and so he goes, again and again, in eight-minute increments. It’s like a sci-fi/action Groundhog Day. You’d figure the range of the gimmick would be limited and that the film would become monotonous. That it never does is a testament to the filmmakers’ inventiveness; a series of misdirections and jolting twists make this a nice surprise in an otherwise mediocre movie season. Some suspense
Don’t worry, baby—I won’t even need eight minutes.
thrillers peak too early or too late; this one keeps you in its grip for the entire ride. After bulking up for the lousy Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, this is Jake Gyllenhaal’s breakout blockbuster performance. The supporting cast includes
the always delightful Monaghan, Jeffrey Wright and Vera Fermiga, but this is Gyllenhaal’s show the whole way. The onetime Donnie Darko star is terrific in an intense, layered turn. There are moments of excitement and dry
humor to dilute the morbid premise and, without giving anything away, I’ll simply say I found the conclusion deeply satisfying. Director Duncan Jones’s first movie was the far more somber and heavy-handed Moon, which also dealt with abusive authority figures and the fragility of life in a sci-fi context. This one is a lot more fun, though every bit the dramatic showcase for Gyllenhaal that Moon was for a never-better Sam Rockwell. Jones, the son of none other than David Bowie, makes movies that play like easiergoing, more audience-friendly Terry Gilliam films. He lacks Gilliam’s passionate artistry and a signature style as a filmmaker, but beginning his career with two smart audience puzzlers suggests a promising career. The movie also has a message, though not a heavy-handed one: embrace the small moments, and don’t put off important things just because they’re difficult. It’s refreshing to see a film about death that’s genuinely life-affirming. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1441f

Because I’m privileged with windows, I’ve never watched The Weather Channel—so I haven’t the foggiest as to what their programming is like. But if I had to guess, I’d say it’s 99 percent elevator music accompanying various slides of happy-faced suns, with the experience equating to awkward small talk with your TV. Well, yawn (and Yanni) no longer! Sexing it up, The Weather Channel is on the eve of their biggest action-reality series launch: From the Edge with Peter Lik, produced by NBC’s Peacock Productions. If you’ve seen the promo spots on Comedy Central, the Discovery Channel and National Geographic, you already know that the series follows Melbourne-born master photographer Peter Lik “risking life and limb as he visits some of America’s most spectacular locations in search of the perfect shot.” To celebrate the show’s debut, Lik Lahaina invites you to an in-gallery screening with fancy food from local eateries and live entertainment. Plus, they’ll be giving away lots of high-end prizes like Lik’s photographic works and the 25th anniversary edition of his Big Book. 661-6623; peterlik.com
WILD WAHINE WEDNESDAY
Beyond audacious acrobatics, something I find striking about live dance performances—especially contemporary dance—is the sound. The pattering jump and thump of feet on wooden floors and the gentle twist of toes in twirl—audible only in the quietest heart-wrenching moments—somehow make the performance feel more real and raw. But international contemporary dance company Azure Barton & Artists— at the MACC this Thursdy—would be real and raw in a vacuum. The Santa Barbara Independent raves, “Like sex, it is urgent, embarrassing, raunchy, satisfying, complex,” while the New York Times says it’s “full of surprise and humor, emotion and pain, expressed through a dance vocabulary that takes ballet technique and dismantles it to near-invisibility.” At the helm of the company is Azure Barton, an artist in residence at The Banff Centre in Canada and The Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City who was named the official Ambassador of Contemporary Choreography in Alberta, Canada. In 2006, she choreographed the Broadway revival production of The Threepenny Opera, and has created works for Mikhail Baryshnikov, Hell’s Kitchen Dance, The National Ballet of Canada, Nederlands Dans Theater, American Ballet Theatre, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal, Sydney Dance Company and The Juilliard School, among others. Sounds good to me. 242-7469; mauiarts.org

There are a lot of things I don’t understand. Why bad things happen to good people. Quantum mechanics. Life, The Universe and Everything (Oh, wait—that’s easy: 42). Among those is why people aren’t up in arms (in a good way) that The Doobie Brothers and War are coming to Maui. Guys, why aren’t we dancing in the street? They’re kinda living history, the forefathers of funk. In fact, before you speed off to get tickets, just go ahead and throw the funk in the back of your lowrider— they always ask you to bring it, anyway. Seriously, The Doobie Brothers have sold over 30 million albums in the U.S. alone since their ’70s inception, and War is hailed as one of the most eclectic bands, ever. When else are you gonna be able to claim the Cisco Kid was a friend of yours, after a long train runnin’? Go ahead and drink some black water, but don’t spill the wine. And do whatever you can to be at this epic show, though even if you don’t, please, let’s just be friends. 242-2469; mauiarts.org [Ynez Tongson]
Once a year Maui comes together to honor its farmers at the Maui County Agricultural Festival on the grounds of the Maui Tropical Plantation. The people who grow our food and the restaurants utilizing the bounty come together under one delicious, instructive tent. This year’s focus is Maui vegetables, and so the festival will show off the spectrum of colorful produce, special-occasion vegetables such as asparagus and fennel and crops like “coles” (members of the Cruciferae or mustard family) that are the bread and butter of diversified commercial agriculture on Maui today. “These veggies are often overlooked yet keep numerous farmers and farm lands productive,” says Maui County Farm Bureau Executive Director Warren Watanabe. “The best way to support local agriculture is to buy and eat what Maui grows, which means to be familiar with all crops.” The group Slow Food Maui will be on hand in the taste education tent, where Maui coles will be the stars of the show, with farmers and chefs teaming up to prepare any one variety in several ways. “Caramelized, simmered or in salads, bought from a farm nearby, coles may change the way Maui thinks about daily food and local ag,” says Susan Campbell, chair of Slow Food Maui. mauicountyfarmbureau.org [Jen Russo]

The Great Showerhead in the Haiku Sky has, as often it does, turned on full blast, so we’re shouting. “Hey, do you know the origins of that idiomatic expression?â€? I ask. “Does it have something to do with witches?â€? I laugh. “Why would it have anything to do with witches?â€? “Who else would make it rain cats and dogs?â€? “Touche, Murray,â€? I giggle. “But really, I heard it’s because in Ol’ England, during downpours, feral cat and dog carcasses would wash through the gutters.â€? “God, Anu. You shouldn’t say that—not in front of the kids,â€? Bill gags, gently covering the ears of the fat cat on his lap. Despite our differences, Bill is good about putting up with my morbid interests. And cutely, he has a penchant for petpampering—which is part of the reason he has full custody of our 20-pound feline, 10 pound dog and 1.5 ounce parrot. Besides, the pets love Bill’s big, beautiful house in the jungle, with its plush emerald carpet and matching velvet couch. Hell, I love Bill’s big house, too—and its beďŹ ttingly big TV in front of said couch—so during my semi-regular visitation hours, I hunker down with our dog in the crevice of the corner cushions, having bartered frozen pizzas for remote control privileges.** But over the last month, the TV’s been broadcasting only in gradients of green. After failed attempts to ďŹ x it, the justiďŹ cation is that it at least complements the carpet and couch. It takes a little getting used to, but the defect is tolerable enough. Then, suddenly, we experience a cathode ray tube miracle! (Or the result of rainy witchcraft?) Amidst otherwise all-Oz, vibrant red begins appearing onscreen. Fergie, in the Dr. Pepper Cherry commercial, looks like Wicked’s Elphaba and for one, weird moment I don’t despise Fergie. The two-tone is neat, with candy apple colors now on every lady’s lips and lacquered nails, on

barber poles and pepperonis, on sale tags and spurts of blood. “That reminds me—check this out,â€? I say to Bill, pulling off my sock to reveal a crimson-soaked bandage on my big toe. I unwrap it and show him the gushing ap, in the spot where the heavy bookshelf fell during my weekend ofďŹ ce-furniture rearranging spree. The parrot squawks, the dog whines. “Eew, gross. You should get that looked at,â€? he says and taps on a piece of unopened mail on the counter, printed with a Kaiser return address. “Here, I have a rebate you can use.â€? “Thanks, but I think it’s ďŹ â€”â€? I begin to reply as Bill opens the envelope and promptly retracts his offer. “Wait a minute. This is a bill?! Never mind,â€? he says, confused. He’s the only person I know who’d expect payment instead of a statement from a doctor’s ofďŹ ce. “Still, you really should get your toe looked at.â€? (“You shouldâ€? is Bill’s favorite phrase when speaking to me.) “Eh, it’s nothing time and hydrogen peroxide won’t heal. Worst case scenario I’ll just cut it off.â€? Bill (probably not listening) shrugs. Had we still been (sort of) married, I would have gotten a long lecture about all the things I should be doing instead of being clumsy. Ironically, now that we’re divorced, we don’t argue anymore and we only shout when it rains. Anyway, the show’s over. The pizza’s eaten, the rain’s letting up and it’s time for me to go home. I kiss the cat, the dog and the bird goodbye—and even Bill Murray (like I said, time and hydrogen peroxide work wonders). Driving away through the still-running road rivers ďŹ lled with attened frogs, I see a bloated rat and laugh, wishing Bill had seen it, too. * Not the Bill Murray, obviously. ** Some restrictions may apply. See situation for details. â–

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions on page 7
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Sex is fantastic, but don’t get carried away. Most Rams wouldn’t dream of entering a serious relationship where the sex didn’t rock, but you can sometimes place more value in this department than is strictly warranted. After all, as years go by, you’ll spend much more time out of bed with this person than in. Without an exceptional rapport when you’re not naked with each other, it’ll be a rocky road. Don’t be blinded by passion; make sure you’re into this person during the cold light of freshly post-coital day—before you commit to something that might not be as good when the sex isn’t as great.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Even though you’re exceptionally capable of seeing and understanding different perspectives on an issue, when you feel something strongly, sometimes it’s hard for you to shut up about it. That can be extremely insensitive to someone coming at it from another angle, or worse, stuck in the middle and unable, for various reasons, to pick a side at all. This is one of those times when you must learn to keep quiet for the good of others, even if biting your tongue is extremely difficult to do. The momentary satisfaction of speaking up would be greatly outweighed by the regret that’d kick in a minute later.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Money’s great, but selling out isn’t. Of course, this is hardly a black and white issue, and everyone has to make compromises in order to bring in the dough. That’s just how it works. But ultimately only you can accurately gauge whether the ones you’ve made (or are thinking about making) feel “right.” If they don’t, there’s an obvious solution—simply saying no—but unfortunately very few people, especially in these crappy economic times, have the moral fortitude to turn down a buck in favor of their own admirable principles. The question is: do you?
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) “Finders keepers, losers weepers,” may sort of work as a childhood adage, but in general that’s not how it should work in the adult world. Just because there are many unscrupulous people doesn’t mean you need to add to their ranks—quite the opposite, actually. Another person might pick up a lost wallet, pocket the cash, and toss the thing in the trash—you, however, should not. Consider it your job this week (and always, actually) to attempt to restore people’s decaying faith in humanity, even if it’s not in your financial best interest, not further undermine it.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Being obligated to something by someone else is galling. Sadly, plenty of people have enough nerve to sign you up for something without even asking. Now you’re in the awkward position of backing out, throwing your “friend” (or worse, spouse) under the bus, or performing a duty you never actually agreed to. Sleep on it. There’ll be fallout no matter what you decide—the question is who do you want it to fall on, who you wish will end up owing whom, and how much you’re actually willing to put up with. So many questions! You’ve got about a week to come up with the answers.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC.21) Speaking the truth can often be redundant, and fairly pointless. Although I’m pretty sure you’re not one of those morons who feel compelled to share such astute observations as “Wow, you’re really tall,” or “Your hair is so red!” sometimes the truths you are inclined to share also don’t need to be spoken aloud, since everyone concerned is already just as aware of them as the 6’2 woman who’s forced to constantly acknowledge her height by simpleton strangers. It’s your job to speak the truth when no one else will. When everyone already knows it, just keep your mouth shut.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) No one’s as good at making mountains out of molehills as a Cancer with too much time on her hands. Your busy brain requires emotionally charged stimuli most of the time, and if it doesn’t get it naturally, it’ll create some out of virtually nothing. Nine times out of ten, you regret these little episodes later, if you have a chance to reflect on them. The trick is anticipating that future regret and preventing it from happening by learning how to quell the drama before it erupts—and how to separate the real situations that ought to be addressed from the ones you just made up in your head. That’s this week’s task. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Be honest with yourself. If you’re not satisfied with how things are, only you can answer the question: “Can I learn to live with this?” If things must change in order for you to stick around for the long haul, clarify and communicate those changes as soon as you can, even if such demands reflect poorly upon you; you’ll look worse if you pretend everything’s alright and then bail months or years down the line, without warning. Your great strength is knowing yourself and owning your desires; failing to do so is almost unforgivable—so get on it. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Smart and flexible people redirect their non-productive or constructive energy. You can’t control your natural impulses and desires (and trying too hard to do so is very unhealthy; just ask all the poor guys who’ve tried to go “ex-gay” through homophobic religious conditioning), but you can use them to support your conscious choices rather than undermining them. If you’re horny for the mailman, use it to fuel your sex life with your partner. If you have a craving for adventure, figure out ways to make your life more adventurous—without messing shit up. Blindly following your strongest feelings is a bad idea; consciously and intelligently pursuing or redirecting them is a very good one.
1. 5; 5 2. Prince Kuhio 3. Stealing credit card information (by installing “skimming” devices)
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) This week encompasses one of my favorite “holidays,” April Fool’s Day. Most Capricorns I know aren’t such big fans of the kinds of pranks pulled on this day, but I have some advice to help you shift your perspective. Being pranked can be an indication of affection! Most of these stunts require forethought, planning, set-up, and knowledge of the person being fooled, or at least their situation. That someone would go to such effort for a bit of fun is either a sign they have too much time on their hands, or they simply care about you (or both). Whether you pity or appreciate them (or both), try to be patient and good-natured about the whole thing, won’t you? AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Some people talk too much and rob situations of any energy or feeling they might have had. Others talk too little and deliberately or accidentally deceive or mislead others. This week is finding just the right balance of communication, that’ll clue people in to the stuff they need to know, but not suck all the air out of the room. That’s an awfully tricky balance to strike, but if anyone’s capable of it, you Aquarians are. And since most of the other people involved are fairly terrible at it—it might just be up to you to either clarify the situation further for them—or tell them to shut up, already. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Pisces loathe being forced to make up their minds more quickly than they want to. However, sometimes that can take ages. When your decision affects another person (particularly in regards to questions like, “Do I want to spend the rest of my life with him/her?”), rushing to a (perhaps poor) decision is a bad idea. However, stringing someone along while you take your sweet time figuring it out is worse, especially if it robs them of the chance to find an alternative should you decide against them. Reality check time. Asking for a few months to figure things out is perfectly acceptable; a few years, on the other hand, isn’t.
