or years, the most interesting piece of legislation related to the Native Hawaiian community was the Akaka Bill. Which is to say: there hasn’t been much interesting legislation related to the Native Hawaiian community. That could change if state lawmakers give the go-ahead to HCR107. Introduced by Maui Rep. Mele Carroll, the resolution would establish a committee to investigate the legality of two agreements between President Grover Cleveland and Queen Lili‘uokalani (pictured at right) that precipitated the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom. And it wouldn’t be merely a toothless historical exercise; the committee would have the power to hold hearings, subpoena witnesses and examine documents. The House Hawaiian Affairs Committee (HAW) gave the resolution its stamp of approval on March 31, and last week the Maui County Council voted unanimously to support it at the behest of Councilmember Elle Cochran. Few dispute the fact that Hawaii is stolen territory; the United States admitted

hen the University of Connecticut surged back in the second half to defeat Butler 53-41 and win the NCAA men’s basketball championship this week, they probably weren’t thinking about Maui. Then again, maybe they were. Lahaina is, after all, where UCONN’s run began, with a win at the Maui Invitational in November. The team they beat, you’ll recall, was Kentucky, the same team they defeated in the NCAA semifinal. You may also recall that Kentucky coach John Calipari publicly bashed the Invitational, complaining at the time that it put a logistical and
financial strain on his program. That’d be he same John Calipari who signed a $32 million contract that

begins. Certainly HCR107 won’t undo the last 120 years—and it isn’t meant to. Hardy Spoehr, executive director of the Honolulu-based Native Hawaiian Health Board, put it well in testimony submitted to HAW. “All of Hawaii’s people are not familiar with this era in Hawaii’s history,” Spoehr wrote. “There are important aspects to this which need to become part of the public record. This will enable many to move on from 1893 to the present day.”

n other sports-related news, the County announced last week that a new windsurfing competition is coming to Maui this fall. The Maui Makani Classic will launch sometime between October 27 and November 1— whenever conditions are best—at Hookipa. Mayor Alan Arakawa predicted the event, which may draw as many as 100 top competitors, will have a “tremendous economic impact on the surrounding areas” and the Maui Visitors Bureau also gushed at the news. That’s all well and good, but we’re mostly just excited to see some bad-ass windsurfing. ■

Everything about the medical marijuana dispensary bill [“Pot Stuff,â€? March 31] sounds OK to me—except for the $100 temporary permit for visitors. It seems like the legislators writing the bill don’t know or care about the serious problems that cause patients to seek medical marijuana, which is so much better for most than narcotic prescription painkillers. NEWS OF THE WEIRD SILTY PLEASURES A 200-exhibit installation on the history of dirt and filth opened in a London gallery in March, featuring the ordinary (dust), the educational (a video tribute to New York’s Fresh Kills landfill, at one time the world’s largest), the medical (vials of historic, nasty-looking secretions from cholera victims) and the artistic (bricks fashioned from feces gathered by India’s Dalits, who hand-clean latrines). Dirt may worry us as a society, said the exhibit’s curator, but we have learned that we “need bits of it and, guiltily, secretly, we are sometimes drawn to it.” Capping the exhibit: a broom with a diamond- and pearl-studded handle.
CLASSIFIED MISINFORMATION The CIA recently won two court rulings allowing the agency to refuse comment about its former contractor Dennis Montgomery. The rulings mean that issues involving Montgomery are “state secrets”— despite strong evidence that the main “secret” is how foolish the agency, and the U.S. Air Force, were to pay Montgomery at least $20 million for bogus software following 9/11, according to a February New York Times report. Montgomery, a small-time gambler who said he was once abducted by aliens, convinced the two agencies that his sophisticated software could detect secret al-Qaeda messages embedded in video pixels on Al Jazeera’s news Web site. According to the Times, Montgomery has not been charged with wrongdoing and is not likely to be, since the agencies do not want their gullibility publicized.
PLANS THAT BACKFIRE For about a year, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) has been facilitating Mexico’s increasingly bloody drug wars by turning a blind eye to U.S. gun sales to the cartels—even though those very guns account for some civilian deaths as well as the December fatal shooting of a U.S. Border Patrol agent. According to a senior ATF agent who supplied evidence to CBS News, neither the Mexican government nor many U.S. officials were aware of the program (called “Fast and Furious”) until mid-March. ATF allowed the sales so it could track the guns’ locations and help facilitate, at some future date, indictments against drug traffickers.
INCOMPETENT CRIMINALS (1) Jason Davis was sentenced in December in Burlington, Iowa, to five years in prison for one crime, but still pending is his August 2010 arrest for shoplifting at Westland Mall, which ended with Davis passed out after making a crime-scene boo-boo in his pants. (2) Michael Trias, 20, was arrested in March in Mesa, Arizona, after a botched residential burglary. According to police, Trias came in through a window, landed in a clothes basket made of PVC and netting and became entangled. His flailing attempts to free himself alerted the homeowner. ■
This goes out to the young man who helped my senile Auntie find her way home after she wandered off: thanks, little bruddah. Instead you asked if she needed help, talked to her until you could find out where she lived, then walked her to her front door (telling jokes the whole time, she says). If not for your kindness, who knows what might have happened? That kind of attitude will get you far in life—keep it up. Resilience & Japan Three lessons from the tsunami and nuclear disaster we’d all do well to heed
A
n 8.9-magnitude earthquake, a 33-foot tsunami, a series of crises at their battered nuclear plants: the people of Japan have withstood a living nightmare with admirable tenacity over the past month. There’s no shortage of lessons the rest of the world can learn. Here are three of them. 1. People are resilient. Disaster movies and disaster research might as well come from different planets. When Hollywood shows you an earthquake, an eruption or a towering inferno, you see mass panic, stampeding crowds, maybe a looting spree. When sociologists study real-life disasters they see calm, resourceful people evacuating buildings, rescuing strangers and cooperating nonviolently. How cooperative can people be? “At a convenience store in one battered coastal prefecture,” The Washington Post reported shortly after the Sendai quake, “a store manager used a private electric generator. When it stopped working and the cash register no longer opened, customers waiting in line returned their items to the shelves.” These patterns shift somewhat from culture to culture, and if a disaster coincides with certain conditions—severe class distinctions, a serious pre-existing crime problem, a police department that’s especially corrupt—a post-disaster riot may break out. But that’s the exception, not the rule. So it shouldn’t be a surprise to see survivors keeping their heads, sharing food and other resources, and doing all they can to contain the damage. That’s what usually happens after an earthquake. When westerners imagine Japanese people facing a catastrophe, they’re more likely to picture an agitated mob fleeing Godzilla. Then they’re taken aback when real life doesn’t resemble a flick about a fictional fire-breathing lizard. 2. A society’s resilience increases with its wealth. When an earthquake shook Haiti last year, an estimated 316,000 people were killed and 1.5 million left homeless. The Japanese quake was far more powerful, it was followed by a tsunami and the affected area had a bigger population. But the death toll is expected to be far lower than in Haiti. We don’t know what the longterm effects will be of the radiation leaks from Japan’s power plants, but they’ll have to be pretty bad to rival the “fallout” from the Haitian quake, which contaminated the country’s already-fragile water supply and led to a cholera outbreak last October. Obviously, there are many differences between Japan and Haiti. One of the most important is that Japan is much richer. Think back to 2007, when Cyclone Sidr
killed somewhere between 5,000 and 10,000 people in Bangladesh. In the wake of the disaster, Emma Batha of Reuters noted that a 1991 storm of comparable strength killed far more Bangladeshis—over 140,000. A 1970 cyclone led to around 500,000 deaths, even though it was a category 3 storm and the others were category 5. Batha listed some of the ways Bangladeshi society had adapted to make disasters less lethal: new cyclone shelters, better weather forecasts, smarter construction practices. But the deeper change was that Bangladesh had grown much wealthier. The chief barrier to further improvements, meanwhile, was the poverty that remained. “We cannot make our houses stronger,” one aid worker told Batha. “The poor people only have bamboo.” It’s important to note that it’s a wealthier society that’s more resilient, not a country with a cluster of rich people huddled around a dictator. A poor nation can’t ward off disaster by finding oil or by using aid money to fund some big development projects. It needs the sort of bottom-up, entrepreneuriallydriven growth that allows ordinary people to produce, trade and build real wealth. And it needs the sort of liberty that allows those people both to use that wealth to protect themselves and their neighbors and to pressure their government for better policies. 3. Resilient policies evolve; brittle policies are imposed. We’ve heard a lot of praise over the last few days for Japan’s seismically savvy building codes, which legally enshrined the engineering standards that allowed Sendai’s skyscrapers to survive the seventh biggest quake in recorded history. It’s worth noting that on paper, Haiti had building codes, too. They just didn’t do the Haitians any good. The difference here isn’t simply that Japan enforces its regulations and Haiti doesn’t. If the Haitian state suddenly acquired the will and ability to crack down on its citizens’ substandard structures, the result would be the slow-motion disaster of mass homelessness. And if Japan’s building codes suddenly disappeared from the books, the next skyscraper project still might find that no one will insure it if it doesn’t follow the same standards as before. That’s not to say there’s nothing that can be done to improve Haitian building practices while the country is still poor. But as architects and engineers on the island have been discovering, what’s needed there are ongoing improvements to local know-how that rely on regional resources, not blueprints designed far from the scene of the devastation. Japan’s rules are far from perfect, but they evolved through experiment and experience, a process that Lawrence Vale and Thomas Campanella summed up in their 2005 book The Resilient City. Public authorities may try to introduce sweeping new plans after
a disaster, they wrote, but “larger urban patterns are not easily or readily altered.” Instead, over the last century Japan has incrementally altered its codes. Before 1965, skyscrapers were banned altogether, but with advances in engineering the government finally relented and allowed them to appear. There is a striking difference between policies that evolve over time, with form following failure, and policies imposed from on high. That distinction’s implications go far beyond how buildings are constructed. Traditionally, emergency management in America was relatively decentralized. That didn’t change much after FEMA was founded in 1979, and it’s a good thing it didn’t; the agency had a well-deserved reputation for cronyism and incompetence, though its performance improved somewhat in the ’90s. After 9/11, though, it was absorbed by the gigantic new Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and the United States’ emergency response system grew more centralized, militarized and dysfunctional. The disaster researcher Kathleen Tierney wrote a withering account of the results in 2006. Traditional emergency management, she noted, takes an “all hazards” approach, in which institutions “assess their vulnerabilities, focus generically on tasks that must be performed regardless of event type, and then plan for specific contingencies, guided by risk-based assessments of what could happen.” But DHS was oriented toward more specific threats, and it had the authority to impose its obsessions. Under Homeland Security Presidential Directive 8, communities that once had assessed their own risks and vulnerabilities were “required to develop plans and programs for dealing with 15 different scenarios, 13 of which involve terrorism, WMD, and epidemics.” In other words, DHS ignored approaches that had evolved over time in state and local governments, volunteer groups and the private sector and instead cooked up new ideas, like the much-mocked colorcoded threat levels. If you believe things have improved under Obama, think back to the federal government’s secretive, sclerotic reaction to the Gulf oil spill in the summer of 2010. When volunteers in one Alabama town set up a blockade of barges to keep oil out of the Magnolia River, for example, it amounted to an act of civil disobedience— the bureaucratic approval process just wasn’t fast enough. We’ve seen a lot of terrible things in Japan of late, but we haven’t seen anything like that. When it comes to withstanding a disaster, they just might be more resilient than we are. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1442u

WAVE MY SOUL KAUAI’S BETHANY HAMILTON DISCUSSES FAITH, SURFING, SPAM MUSUBI AND WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO WATCH SOMEONE ELSE TACKLE THE ROLE OF HER LIFE
WORDS BY BARRY WURST II • PHOTOGRAPHY BY NOAH HAMILTON
I
t was like most movie premieres, with a red carpet, celebrities sliding out of limos and the press waiting eagerly to drown the stars with questions and blinding camera flashes. Only this wasn’t Hollywood but rather Denver, Colorado, and the first big name to walk the carpet was Kauai’s own Bethany Hamilton, in town to promote Soul Surfer, the inspirational drama based on her life. Hamilton—as anyone who’s ever paddled out knows—overcame a shark attack and learned how to surf with one arm, becoming perhaps the greatest comeback story in the history of the sport. The tale was begging to be a major motion picture and now it is, starring Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt and AnnaSophia Robb, who plays Hamilton in one of the year’s breakout dramatic performances. Robb is a Denver native, which explains why the event took place on a chilly night in Colorado rather than a balmy Hawaii evening. A tall, striking figure, Hamilton was all smiles at the event and accessible to her many fans. Following the film, Hamilton participated in a question and answer session along with the film’s director, Sean McNamera, and Robb, who learned to surf under Hamilton’s guidance. Hamilton—who has an easygoing demeanor that belies her insanely busy

schedule—spoke with me the following day about the film and the causes she’s passionate about. Our talk also covers issues ranging from faith to Spam Musubi to her favorite surf movie.
Now that you’ve seen the finished product, how do you feel about the film?
make it more true to who we are.
You’ve got competitions coming up in Australia, France, Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Oahu and California. How do you juggle all that and promoting the film?
You handpicked AnnaSophia Robb to play you in the movie and have said it was her role in Bridge to Terabithia that drew you to her initially. What was it about that performance that made you think, ‘she’s the one’?
Yeah, it’s crazy. I’m trying to jockey two lives right now, with pro surfing and having this movie come out. It’s been hard to deal with not surfing, being in different places, but I’m just going to take the year as it comes and see how it goes. I spend a lot of time doing training and, of course, surfing and also working on my spine and trying to keep my body in proper posture. [The travel] is exciting. I really enjoy that part of my job. I’m excited to go to Australia in a week or two to compete in my first event of the year.
Well, she’s just a naturally talented actress and she has a really spunky attitude. She’s kind of a fun girl and has the blonde hair thing going on—she was just the right girl.
I know you support the children’s charity World Vision and a nonprofit organization called Friends of Bethany. Talk about that.
I’m really happy with how it turned out. It was kind of scary to have, like, Hollywood and our true story combining, [but] it turned out really good.
Was there ever a point where the film was being written or shot when you thought, ‘I never said that’ or ‘that’s not how that happened’? There was definitely some awkward [dialogue] in the script and throughout the filming. It was great, though, because the director allowed my family and me to give feedback and input to
Well, that was one of my favorite scenes in the movie, going to Thailand. I got to go to Thailand with World Vision and it was a special trip. I really like what they’re doing and I think it’s a great opportunity to encourage people to support those around the world who need love and food. The trip I
went on, for example, was just helping them overcome their fear of the ocean. The non-profit organization is what my family and I started recently; we’re still figuring it out but we’d like to reach out to amputees and shark attack victims in various ways. It’s been a blessing to be able to get that going.
AnnaSophia said she ate ‘cleaner foods’ while you were training her for the film. Which makes me wonder, as an island girl [in his best Pidgin] you like Spam musubi? [Laughs] I used to grind so much Spam musubi when I was little.
Nowadays, I don’t really eat white rice or pig, so it’s not a part of my diet anymore. I love seaweed and poke and I eat lots of vegetables and organic foods.
What are your favorite surfing movies? My favorite is probably North Shore.
John Philibin, who played Turtle in that, was also in Soul Surfer. He’s my favorite in North Shore, so it was cool to have him come be a part of [our film]. He’s friends with Helen Hunt, so that’s how he got hooked up.
Do you come to Maui much, to visit or surf? I really enjoy coming to Maui, there’s some really good surf over there. It’s very beautiful and similar to Kauai. I have friends over there; I just like to roam around.
You spoke last night about the importance of your faith. Is there anything you’d like to say to young Christians—or teens in general—who may be going through hard times? If you’re struggling, trust in God with everything you’re doing and
[don’t] live like the world is telling you to live. Especially for young girls: body image is such a huge issue. Live a healthy lifestyle and love yourself. Most importantly, focus on your inner beauty.
What would you say to someone who wants to learn how to surf but is intimidated by the waves and the dangers of the ocean? If you want to try surfing, just get out there when it’s smaller. The more time you spend out there, the more comfortable you’ll be. Also, having someone who knows what they’re doing to help instruct you and having good swimming abilities can really help you a lot.
“Body image is such a huge issue for young girls. Just live a healthy lifestyle, love yourself and focus on your inner beauty.”
This next question is from an 8-year old girl named Haunani who’s from Upcountry Maui: Did surfing feel the same for you after your hospital and recovery time? It’s definitely different, figuring it out with one arm. It’s a totally different approach to riding waves, just figuring out where to place myself in the line-up and catching enough speed to catch the waves.
What’s your favorite place to surf on the planet? Besides Hawaii, I like Indonesia. But Hawaii’s definitely my favorite.
I won’t ask you which island is your favorite, because I don’t want to cause any rifts. Hey, I was on Maui the other day and my friend took me hiking in Iao Valley and that was incredible. That might be my favorite spot over there. ■ To follow Bethany’s adventures check out Bethanyhamilton.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1442a

Swimming through Maui’s watering holes David Paul’s Island Grill Sky Lounge 900 Front St., Lahaina, 662-3000 LOCATION: David Paul’s is the northern-most restaurant that’s still in town, right across from a short rock-made seawall. DECOR: Choose from three atmospheres of cool: the oceanand-sunset al fresco lanai right on Front Street; the inner circle, including elegant tables and chairs, bar seating, booths that overlook the inside of the kitchen and the ‘luxe couches; and finally the back patio, where the DJ plays next to the satellite bar and you can drink on cushy outdoor couches under the stars (hence the name Sky Lounge). PRETTIEST DRINK: The New Moon margarita, served in handblown glass rimmed with li hing mui and featuring 1800 silver tequila and Eristoff black, plus blackberries. Dark and mysterious as midnight, the drink is slightly viscous and sweet. And Sky Lounge has more than pretty drinks: guys and dolls mingle over lounge music spun by DJ CIA, and chat each other up over fetching tapas. The specialty cocktail menu reads like a chef designed it, with top-shelf spirits and fresh garnishes and juices. Ring your bell with a Front Street Flip with egg yolk and Hennessy, or the aptly named Lahaina Relief, a champagne cocktail with St. Germain. ENTERTAINMENT: Music starts on the backside lounge at 7pm and goes ‘til close. GRINDS: A tapas menu that changes weekly: slider dogs ($3), Kobe beef or crab sliders ($6), popcorn shrimp ($8) and pommes frites ($8), just to name a few. HAPPY HOUR: Happy hour has two Friday shifts: from 5-7pm, when the specialty cocktail menu is half price ($7); and 7pm-
close, when you can get the Sky Lounge cocktail menu featuring two hand-crafted drinks designed for the evening for $8, plus red and a white wine ($10 and under) and sparkling wine ($5) by the glass chosen for the evening. PARKING: The Lahaina Center has parking that can be validated at the restaurant. FROM THE LIPS OF CHEF DAVID PAUL: “The inspiration for Sky Lounge came when I went out for a drink one night and found I wanted to expand the options in Lahaina. It seemed like appropriate timing to launch something new and exciting.” ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1442d2

THE GO! TEAM
Thunder, Lightning, Strike (Columbia; 2004). Brighton is England’s playground. The southern beachfront town is home to huge dance festivals and a big, brassy sound represented best by local hero, Fat Boy Slim. The Go! Team mixes this upbeat aesthetic with the 1970s and, uh, cheerleaders in Thunder, Lightning, Strike. This is their first album, and shows a wide use of divergent sample sources: soul, hip-hop, movie clips. “Ladyflash” mixes a little bit of Diana Ross’s distinct vocals from “Come See About Me” with old skool hip-hop, break beats and what may be kids jumping rope. Many tracks feature the blaring horns, tambourines and high-treble recordings found in soundtracks from the ‘70s. “Junior Kickstart” could easily replace the music for chase scenes in “Charley’s Angels” or “Starsky and Hutch.” But perhaps the most interesting (and strange) samples in Thunder, Lightning, Strike are the sing-song chants of cheerleaders, found prominently in “We Just Won’t Be Defeated” and “Huddle Formation.” The closing song, “Everyone’s a V.I.P. to Someone,” slows the tempo a bit and is reminiscent of a sappy country montage. Sitting down and listening to this could get old fast, but it’s great background music for dance parties. - Ben Lowenthal

P
laywright Philip Kan Gotanda is an AsianAmerican who writes about Asian-Americans, which makes him something of a rarity. And he’s brought many of his plays to prominent national and international stages, which makes him virtually one-of-a-kind. Formerly a musician and then a lawyer, Gotanda wrote his first musical in his second year of law school, “just to keep myself sane,” he says. Soon thereafter he “gratuitously fell into” what’s become an acclaimed career. We caught up with Gotanda ahead of his Maui appearance at the MACC’s McCoy Studio Theater (Friday, April 8, 6:30pm) to learn more about his thoughts on race, relationships and writing. Why do you think it’s important to write about culture and ethnicity, and why is it important for audiences to experience those stories? To me, it’s always been about writing the stories I want to write, which have always been an extension of my original interest in the Japanese-American family, which is my family. I continued to run with it and I continue to write wherever my interest takes me. It started not so much with setting out to write ethnically themed stories, but writing about the things that I knew. Thirty years ago—at least on the Mainland—the idea that I could create a story with the character at the center of the story looking like me and having my history, there was a time when that was not the norm. Are you familiar with the Chang and Eng? They’re the original “Siamese twins.” Whenever you hear the expression “Siamese twins” it’s actually based on these two ethnically Chinese brothers—conjoined— who were born in Thailand in 1811 and brought to America when they were about 17 or 18 years old. At that time in America, there were these freak shows, so the brothers were toured around the world, initially as freaks. But what’s interesting about Chang and Eng is that they were very smart and very good businessmen. So almost right away they bought out their own contracts and began to tour themselves, becoming world famous in their time. In the early 1930s, they’d made enough money to retire, and they retired in North Carolina to become gentlemen

Playwright Philip Kan Gotanda chronicles the Asian-American experience through his own unique prism
farmers. While they were in North Carolina, they met two sisters—white, Southern belles—and between the four of them they had 21 children and two plantations, spending three days at one and three days at the other, going back and forth. And that’s the story of Chang and Eng. I just did a production of that at UC Berkeley. That, to me, is an extension of my original interest. I’ve been just following stories that allow me to grow thematically and intellectually. One of my stories is set in Hawaii and called The Ballad of Yachiyo, set on the island of Kauai, where my father was born and raised, in 1913. It’s based on an aunt of mine who had a rather tragic life. She died quite early. I went to Kauai and did a lot of research, talked to people, came back and wrote a play about it. But I write about many other things, too—not necessarily connected with being Asian. For example, I wrote a play called A Fist of Roses about male violence.
men who are married to very beautiful, very talented Asian women. It’s not about them, but it’s inspired by these two characters [and] based on that phenomena, which has been written about in the New York Times and a couple of other places. The two of them get set up on a blind date, because that’s what they want, and they meet and go at it. Because of the nature of this setup, they cover a lot of ground and tell each other the truth. It’s a romantic comedy [laughs]. Why do you think the Murdoch/ Deng scenario exists? In my play, the matchmaker says, “The white male and the white woman, that is so last millenium. The white male and black woman, that’s trying too hard. Now the white man and the Latina woman, that’s coming but it’s not here yet. But right now, in this point in time, the right balance is a white male with an Asian woman.” I think that kind of explains it. This play is meant to be provocative, it’s meant to push your buttons. Do you think interracial relations are inherently provocative? The way I’m framing it in this play, I think it is. To have someone who sets up a powerful white male with a younger, talented Asian woman, that scenario is provocative.
What inspired that? I’d been working with a small, alternative theater where they allow you to write about whatever it is you want to write about. And I’ve always been interested in male violence against women. I started doing interviews and ultimately connected with a counseling group in San Francisco. At the time, in San Francisco, if you were convicted of a violent crime against a woman you were given the choice of going to jail or going to these sessions. I was fortunate enough to be introduced to the man who ran these sessions and got to sit in. Ultimately, after about a year, I was allowed to anonymously tape the conversations. After a year and a half, I took this material and wrote [the play]. It was very powerful. I understand you’ve just come from a rehearsal of your latest play. Can you tell me more about it? It’s called Love in American Times and it’s a play that takes off on what I call the Rupert Murdoch/Wendi Deng scenario in which you have very rich, powerful, older white
What, to you, is most unique about the Asian-American experience? I don’t know if it’s unique in the sense that it’s more special than another group’s story, but to me it’s special because it’s the world that I grew up in, it’s the world that I know most intimately, and it’s a world that—in this country—is growing rapidly, in terms of its numbers and influence politically and culturally. What is currently inspiring you? Nothing specific, but as we speak the world is in upheaval and I find that very disturbing—I’m trying to figure out how to write that. Whether it’s in the Middle East, Japan, Mainland America—all these things are impacting me, and that makes me want to try to figure it out and put it into a form that I can understand. I have to sort of allow it to get into my body, then articulate it into a story that incorporates what’s going on and all my internal responses to it and put it out in a cohesive story that I can look at and say, “Oh, this is what I am right now,” and share that with other people. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1442ae
Best Of Maui Awards Ballot It’s that time again
A FEW NOTES ABOUT BALLOT STUFFING:
Time to cast your votes for our annual BEST OF MAUI. Usually, this ballot is decked out with whatever theme we’ve chosen. But this year, we’ve come up with another theme so cool, we want to keep it under wraps. Seriously, you’re gonna really dig it. As usual, categories are organized into five sections: arts & entertainment; food & drink; goods & services; politics & environment; and sports & leisure. We’ve added some new categories this year to spice things up, but you’ll still find all the old standbys. Please VOTE IN AT LEAST 40 CATEGORIES if you want your ballot to be counted. Voting ends May 19.
While most people play it straight, every year a few nefarious folks attempt to stuff the ballot box. To cut down on this, and to ensure the results are fair and accurate, here are a few rules:
★ ONLY ONE (1) BALLOT PER PERSON ★ ALL BALLOTS MUST BE SIGNED ★ NO PHOTOCOPIED BALLOTS WILL BE ACCEPTED ★ MULTIPLE BALLOTS IN THE SAME HANDWRITING WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED ★ BALLOTS MUST BE MAILED IN; NO MORE THAN THREE (3) BALLOTS PER ENVELOPE. ENVELOPES MUST HAVE A RETURN ADDRESS
★ EACH ONLINE BALLOT MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A UNIQUE, VALID E-MAIL ADDRESS
Any ballots that violate these rules—or that sufficiently rouse our suspicion—will not be tallied. We hope it isn’t necessary, but if anyone does attempt to unfairly sway the outcome, we reserve the right to create a Best Ballot Stuffer category. This is not something you want to win—trust us.
You may also notice these convenient little QR codes throughout the ballot that you can scan with your smart phone at any time to take you to our online ballot. llot..
YOU MUST FILL OUT 40 CATEGORIES FOR YOUR VOTE TO COUNT! NOTE: In categories with the LOCAL stamp, only votes for locally owned businesses will be counted; no corporate chains.

If you’ve attended ProArts productions like Urinetown, Cabaret and The Fantasticks, you already know this theater company’s shows are superb and not to be missed. This is the final weekend to catch their latest (and first of their Spring season), Driving Miss Daisy, a play by Alfred Uhry made famous by the landmark 1987 offBroadway production, the Oscarwinning 1989 film adaptation starring Morgan Freeman, Jessica Tandy and Dan Aykroyd and a (currently running) Broadway show starring James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave. The Maui version stars Joyce Romero as Daisy Werthen and J. Marc Mance as her put-upon chauffeur. The story is a “timeless, searing, funny and ultimately hopeful meditation on race relations in America, told through the complex relationship between two of popular culture’s most enduring characters,” say co-producers Doug Kendrick and Jonathan Lehman, who also directs. So drive on down to the company’s intimate 80-seat venue to enjoy this ‘ohana-friendly dramady, sure to elicit both laughs and tears. 463-6520; proartsspacific.com
“In my examination of Orchids, hardly any fact has struck me so much as [their] endless diversities of structure,” wrote Charles Darwin in his 1877 treatise The Various Contrivances By Which Orchids Are Fertilised By Insects. Indeed, orchids—not unlike kids—are each utterly, beautifully unique. (And in certain circumstances, admittedly, totally frustrating.) So what better way to exalt the education of our isle’s keiki than with the 3rd Annual Orchid Ball fundraiser? Benefiting the financial aid and education programs of Kihei’s Montessori Hale O Keiki, this gala event’s piece de resistance is the “Floral Fantasy” wonderland created by some of Maui’s best floral designers (with arrangements to be auctioned off, among other items like fine jewelry and travel packages). Add gourmet grinds by Executive Chef Roger Stettler, cocktails (like the Lemon Blossom martini) by Ocean Vodka and funky jazz by SLAM featuring David Choy and you’ve got the makings of a blossoming good time. Plus, a limited number of free tickets to the special Floral Preview Party featuring afternoon cocktails (4:30-5:30pm, $25) are available to floral and wedding industry professionals (or any other interested party), simply by calling. 874-7441; orchidball.montessorihaleokeiki.org PAINTING BY ERNEST HAECKEL

In Berenstain Bears No Girls Allowed, Brother Bear builds a secret clubhouse and excludes Sister Bear. Sister, of course, shows up Brother by building a super sweet clubhouse all her own. In the end, both boys and girls learn to play together—which is nice—but I still love that Sister shows off her strengths in the process. Because it’s nice to flex our feminine might once in a while—and on Friday night Punani Parade (yeah, you read that right—so what?) is doing just that. A show of “Sistahood... sweet, soulful, sultry harmonies guaranteed to move and groove you,” this “Fearless Female Frenzy” features hostess Shea Derrick of The Freeradicals Projekt (pictured), Kelli Love and Maesyn plus DJ Sweet Beets (aka Christina Boyden) on the decks. Then on Monday, local theater maven Lehua Simon directs her original one-act Girl In Tree as a free, ONO! (one night only) production at the historic Iao Theater. “It’s basically a hippie chic fair,” Simon says. Entertainment rounds out with performances by a belly dancing troupe and lady musicians singing eco-conscious tunes, as well as women’s clothing and jewelry trunk shows plus LUSH cosmetics (free goodie bags!), and much more.
If laughter is the best medicine, then why do doctors charge so much? Plus, a lot of them aren’t even that funny. You know what else gives you the warm fuzzies? Good food. Oh, and helping people. This Sunday, you’ll have the chance to do both of them, at once. Boom! First up is the 14th Annual Elegant Afternoon Tea benefiting Women Helping Women, held at the new Yokouchi Pavilion at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Catering will be done by the gloriously talented Bev Gannon, who promises to take you on a journey to Italy, India and Bali—via your taste buds. Ladies and gents, for much less than a plane ticket (not to mention a doctor’s visit) you can dine like royalty and help end domestic violence. OK, maybe tea isn’t your thing, but a good laugh is. Enter trash-talkin’ Kathy Griffin, a self-proclaimed D-lister with two Emmys and all-around funny lady. Laughs + eats = good medicine. 242-7465; mauiarts.org /whwmaui.net / kathygriffin.net [Ynez Tongson]

The Unhappiest Man In America
F
or the last three years, as reported by the New York Times, Gallup research has compiled an extensive Well-Being Index by polling 1,000 Americans about their “emotional status, work satisfaction, eating habits, illnesses, stress levels and other indicators of quality life.â€? So when NYT requested “a statistical composite for the happiest person in America,â€? Gallup knew exactly who that hypothetical happy man would be: a “tall, Asian-American, observant Jew who is at least 65 and married, has children, lives in Hawaii, runs his own business and has a household income of more than $120,000 a year.â€? Lo and behold, someone ďŹ t the bill— and that man is Manoa’s own Alvin Kuo Wong, who, the Star Advertiser reports, “lives with a frisky, oversized puppy [and] cooks kosher meals for young scholars at his home.â€? That got me thinking: who would be the Unhappiest Person in America? “Oh, that’s easy,â€? you might say. “The Unhappiest Person in America would obviously be a short, transgendered, atheist illegal immigrant living in Utah who is young, thrice-divorced and childless, and is unemployed but not receiving beneďŹ ts.â€?
Wrong! Here’s why: Though Gallup’s statistics say men are generally happier than women, wahine have a little thing called “shoe stores and thus the U.S.’s Unhappiest is still a man. A short person? No way—petite is chic. Illegal immigrant? Aw, they don’t have it so tough. Disagree? May I remind you that April 15 is, like, a week away. The state of Hawaii, of course, has the highest average “well-being in the U.S. I just sort of assumed Utah would be at the other end of the spectrum, but the lowest-ranking award actually goes to West Virginia. Of six data columns, this Appalachian state boasts the highest rate of diabetes and obesity and fourth lowest consumption of produce (yet somehow manages to have the second-highest “city optimism.) But wait—West Virginia can’t be that bad. After all, John Denver sings it’s “almost heaven. Besides, W.V. doesn’t even have a proper city (Oh what? Charleston?), and everyone knows there’s no better place in the world for the spirit to sink into soulless
anonymity than the city. So let’s think of the big ones. Los Angeles? No... Hollywood’s a rigged lotto that keeps vain dreams alive. New York? No... Broadway rewards hard work, and Ellis Island is all inspirational and stu. Ooh, ooh! I know! The U.S.’s Unhappiest hails from the country’s third-most-populous city, CHI-CA-GO! Yep. Just enough culture to keep you hoping, but so eďŹƒng windy as to blow those hopes right out the window along with another lost Cubs season. (Let’s add insult to injury and say the U.S.’s Unhappiest moved from Hawaii to Chi-Town.) Young? Nope. Middle-aged. Open atheist? Wrong again. A quiet Christian accused of being a secret Muslim. And since the best argument for gay marriage is when straight people say, “if you want to be miserable like the rest of us, go right ahead,â€? the U.S.’s Unhappiest is assuredly hitched. And he has two cute, gregarious daughters (meaning he has to worry about boys). Finally, the U.S.’s Unhappiest is not— and I repeat not—unemployed. No, he’s gotta man-up for The Man like the rest of us. Sadder still, he’s balls deep in a thankless management gig, trying to clean up after the spoiled monkey who owned the joint before. Whew. OK. Now that we’ve narrowed down our data, we can pop it all into our trusty technology box, press the big red Gallup button and [bloop bloop bleep bloop... BLEEP!] we have our results. Drum roll please! The exact current address of the Unhappiest Man in America is: 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington D.C. â– To read more Kula Kid with links and photos and stuff, and to leave comments, visit mauifeed.com/ kulakid To share or save: mt.hy. pr/1442k

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions on page 7
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You do know that you’re my favorite, right? Sure, I love Scorpios almost as much as you, but the truth is, I find you just as exciting, fun, sexy, and dynamic—and much easier to be around. Sometimes you have to deal with people who aren’t quite as thrilled as I am to have you close by, day in and day out—but surely not during your birthday season! In any case, minimize your contact with such losers and concentrate the bulk of your attention on your adoring fans. We’ll respond in kind, I promise.
People felt reluctant to interrupt his witty monologue with something that would probably be less clever or well-delivered than whatever he happened to be saying. I never did this, but I wish someone had taken him aside and said, “You’re a delight and all, but every ten minutes or so, shut up for five minutes—just to see if anyone else would like a turn in the spotlight.” Naturally, no one could diplomatically deliver such a message better than you Libras. If you know someone like this, please do—even if that person is yourself!
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Hardly anyone wins the lottery, mostly because so many people play. Ironically, if few played, it’d hardly be worth playing—since it’s the money from all those non-winning tickets that makes the jackpot so big. The same goes for whatever you’re involved with; as more people take part, it’ll only get better, more successful, and worthwhile. However, you’ll also get a smaller share of the success—if considered purely in terms of financial gain or notoriety. If, however, you measure success in how many people’s lives you improve, how much beauty you create, or how much stronger the connections are between you and those around you, it’ll likely score off the scale.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) I try to never shut any door completely. Sure, some are wedged closed pretty tightly, but I like to think that even those could be reopened if someone on the other side wanted it badly enough (and said the right things). You should emulate my practice. Sure, right now you may want to lock the door shut on this chapter and throw away the key, but life is change, and limiting yourself in such a way is rarely a good thing. Naturally, you don’t have to open that door if someone comes knocking somewhere down the line—but you ought to at least give it some open-minded consideration.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Everyone occasionally falls out with a friend. Most of the time, circumstances allow for mending those fences and restoring harmony between you, but sometimes (as when the fight precedes a distant relocation, or a death), there’s little to no chance to work things out, and a crack can widen into an unbridgeable gulf. This is a good week to fix things up with someone you’re not okay with. Don’t wait. Hopefully neither of you will die in the next week, but you’ve put off a resolution too long already. Hop on Facebook or the phone and reach out, already. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) You don’t need to process everything. Some things (like your kids or roommate walking in on you having sex) are best simply never spoken of again, so everyone can basically pretend it never happened and put it behind them. Before you open your mouth, ask yourself what good could possibly come out of rehashing something, and how likely that’ll outweigh all the awkwardness or misery of having to talk it over. Nine times out of ten this week, you (and all those involved) will actually be better off if you simply change the subject and move on. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Generosity is one of your strengths, but like all strengths it can be a weakness. Being bighearted and giving is wonderful; playing doormat/ATM—not so much. You don’t want to ever cross over into being stingy, petty, or rude— always err on the side of being magnanimous. But this week you’ll need to demonstrate that you’re able to draw a line somewhere, and stick to it. Trust your gut here; it won’t steer you wrong. If someone steps across that line, don’t be mean—but do gently push them back to where they need to be. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Different people process grief, stress, or anger differently. Never interfere in such a process unless it’s causing (or likely to cause) serious, lasting harm to someone. If it’s simply unpleasant or inconvenient, suck it up and back off—for a good long while, anyway. It’s hard to imagine what others experience when shit happens to them, and just because they’re not coping the way you would doesn’t give you the right to butt in. This week keep this in mind: offering to help is always welcome, but forcing your “help” on someone almost never is. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) The life of the party can also be the party-killer. I had a friend who was consistently funny and entertaining— consequently, no one else could shine when he was around.
1. Ballot-access requirements 2. Hilo (Big Island) and Kapaa (Kauai) 3. C.; “fire”
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC.21) You talk a big game, but can you live up to it? Or are you simply getting caught up in the moment, and saying shit you don’t mean, or won’t feel tomorrow? That’s called leading someone on, and it’s mean. This is about self-knowledge. I doubt you’re deliberately deceiving people. However, check what’s coming out of your mouth and make sure it’s something you’ll want and be able to stick to down the line—before you say it. Otherwise, you’re just setting someone up for disappointment, cynicism, and even bitterness. Things change, sure—but if you know yourself well, you can accurately gauge how likely that’ll be, before you get someone’s hopes up about something that probably won’t happen. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) If you add too much hot sauce to food it obscures the taste or even makes it inedible. Too little, of course, might prove too boring or bland for those you’d like to please. Naturally, I’m not talking about your cooking, but the way you present yourself to people. Trying too hard is like making a dish too spicy to eat. However, don’t try hard enough, and people will move on. This week is all about discovering the right amount of effort that’ll allow your full flavor to shine, without coming off as desperate or affected. It’s a tricky line to walk—so enlist whatever unbiased help you can get. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) You rarely ask to be the star of the show, but sometimes you’re just the best person for the role, and you get stuck with it, like it or not. Don’t waste a lot of time trying to get out of it, or sabotaging yourself. You’re here because you’re supposed to be; now it’s your job to simply try to live up to what people expect of you. That’s easier said than done, but at the end of the day, you need to trust that you’re not the least bad of a bunch of terrible options, but actually the best of a number of truly good ones. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Don’t give away too much power. There’s a way to be honest and authentic without necessarily throwing all the balls into someone else’s court and waiting for them to make a play. Don’t race to the destination and be forced to wait for anyone to catch up. There are games and there games. There’s a time for throwing all your cards on the table—but generally it’s not right after they’ve been dealt. When it’s truly time, you’ll know. Until then, be genuine, and meet someone halfway to wherever you both want to go—but don’t go much further.
