PUBLISHER'S NOTE
O
n the evening of April 12, I was assaulted by a member of reality star Duane “Dog the Bounty Hunter” Chapman’s security team. Soon after, I was assaulted again, and had my First Amendment rights violated, by a member of the Maui Police Department. It began around 9pm, when I exited my Wailuku office. As I was crossing the parking lot, I noticed a number of large SUVs directly adjacent to my vehicle, and heard a woman asking for an autograph. Naturally curious, I pulled out my camera and started shooting video. Immediately, Chapman’s security guards began pushing me away. I informed them I was a member of the press and I had the right to film on public property. This did nothing to dissuade them, and after a security guard shoved me particularly hard I announced I was calling 911. The security guard then snatched my phone out of my hands and jabbed me in the mouth with his open palm, making direct contact with my upper front teeth and knocking my head back. At this point I began yelling for help. After repeated demands, the security guard finally threw my phone down on the hood of a car; I grabbed it and called 911. While I was making the call, another member of Dog’s entourage who I recognized as his wife, Beth Chapman, began yelling at me, making it difficult for the operator to hear me. While
from me. I demanded he return it and he did, at which point I began filming again. He then charged me a second time, and as I turned away from him and shoved my phone in my pants he grabbed me and twisted my left arm behind my back, wrenching it painfully. I pleaded with him to stop, telling him he was hurting me. That only made him wrench harder. This went on for at least three minutes. I was screaming for help. The more I screamed in pain, the more Officer Johnson wrenched my arm. The video clearly shows I remained calm; I was doing nothing more than filming the incident, and for that I was assaulted by a public servant on public property. I repeatedly explained to him that I was a member of the press and cited my First Amendment right. Officer Johnson erroneously claimed my press rights didn’t include filming him against his wishes. After the assault, Johnson fabricated a story that I charged him with the camera, but the video evidence (which can be viewed on our news blog, mauifeed.com) clearly refutes that. Soon a higher-ranking officer arrived on scene. As I was explaining the incident to him, I watched in the background as Officer Johnson got his chance to go meet the TV star Chapman, and they shook hands and laughed together. I challenge Dog and his crew to release their video footage of the events. Bottom line: because I attempted the completely legal act of recording on
The police are supposed to serve and protect. When they fail in that duty, they must be held accountable. I was still on the phone with 911, MPD officers arrived at the scene. I explained what had happened, and while one of the officers took my statement I continued recording with my phone. The Dog crew moved behind a van and I shifted slightly to get a better vantage point. It was then that Officer Johnson of MPD told me I was “antagonizing” Dog’s gang. I panned the camera over to Officer Johnson and he charged me and hit me in the face openedhanded as he violently yanked the phone

Listen you old bag. You have some nerve. I park my truck outside of your beach house, which is directly across from the beach access where I have parked a thousand times before without incident. I’m visibly eight months pregnant and you sit in your luxury SUV and can obviously see that I am unloading a stroller, my sleeping two-year-old, toys, towels, beach chairs, the works. I lock my truck and set the alarm and then you decide to get your wrinkled ass out of your car and yell at me for parking on “your” sidewalk, killing “your” grass and threatening to call the cops on me. I was caught so off guard I simply loaded all my stuff back into my truck and left. Next time, go ahead and call the cops; they’ll tell you I’m in the right. Or you could just lighten up. SPINcycle Donald Trump is a clown. In the pejorative sense, yes, but also literally. Think about it: his face is painted orange, his impossibly silly hair perches awkwardly on his head and he stands in front of large groups of people and sputters nonsense. Like last week, when he told NBC News that he’s dispatched a team of investigators to Hawaii to uncover the truth about Obama’s birth certificate and reveal “one of the greatest cons in the history of politics and beyond.” Who better to carry the birther banner than a realityTVstar/presidential candidate? But if you’re dismissing the Donald as just another sideshow, consider this: at least one recent poll found that among prospective Republican candidates only Mitt Romney enjoys moresupportthanTrump. The schtick is getting serious—and the circus is becoming the town. - JS

Yep, We’re A Disaster Even Hawaii residents whose homes and property were impacted by the March 11 tsunami probably feel like they dodged a bullet, particularly in light of the stillunfolding crisis in Japan. But we were hit, and last week President Obama declared parts of the state a “major disaster” area, meaning we’re eligible for federal funds. Gov. Abercrombie formally requested assistance on March 25 after assessments found more than $30 million in damage statewide, and dispatched Lt. Gov. Schatz to D.C. to lobby on Hawaii’s behalf. The declaration—which covers portions of Maui, Oahu and the Big Island—funnels money toward affected government and nonprofit facilities and makes special “hazard mitigation” grants available. Meanwhile, the County announced this week, Maui’s private property owners can apply for help through the U.S. Small Business Administration’s disaster loan program. Outreach centers will be set up in Kihei and on Molokai; for more information visit sba.gov.
Poi Story When cultural practices and modern law clash, modern law usually wins. An exception to that rule is pending on Oahu, where lawmakers are considering a bill that would exempt pai ‘ai, or traditional poi pounding, from Department of Health (DOH) restrictions. If SB101—which cleared the House and is awaiting final Senate approval—becomes law, poi pounders could sell their product directly to consumers without a permit, though they would have to comply with some DOH regulations, including handwashing requirements. DOH initially opposed the bill, but after various revisions state health director Loretta Fuddy now says she supports it “with reservations.” In written testimony,

Making His Case The question is never whether Ed Case is seeking public office, but merely which office he’s after. The current answer: U.S. Senator. Case—a former Congressman who also served in the state legislature—is trying again for Sen. Dan Akaka’s seat, which he ran for and lost in 2006 (angering some party heavyweights including Sen. Dan Inouye in the process). The key difference this time is that Akaka isn’t running. On March 11, Akaka announced he won’t try for a fifth term in 2012; almost exactly a month later, Case became the first Democrat to officially toss in his hat. He won’t be alone for long—other potential contenders include former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (another former

Case foe) and Rep. Mazie Hirono. In announcing his candidacy, Case took a swipe at the climate in Washington, which he said “pits politics against people.” And if there’s anything Ed Case knows well, it’s politics.

Bag It Three months after it took effect, is Maui County’s plastic bag ban actually changing people’s behavior?
O
n January 11, I forgot my reusable shopping bags. I’d seen the ominous “1-1111 signs and the “B.Y.O. Bag posters announcing the impending arrival of the countywide plastic bag ban, so I was nervous I’d be scolded or at least given a dirty look. Instead, the K-mart cashier loaded my items into a large brown paper bag without a word. I was initially relieved, but that quickly faded to disappointment. Was this going to be the result—people simply switching from plastic to paper without batting an eye? Or would residents get behind the spirit of the law? The ban has only been in place three months, so we don’t have any definitive answers. But it’s a good time to take a closer look.

he County Council passed the Plastic Bag Reduction Ordinance—which prohibits businesses “from providing plastic bags to their customers at the point of sale and carries a $500 fine for noncompliance—in August 2008. The lag in implementation was intended to educate businesses and the public, though that effort didn’t ramp up until the waning months of the Tavares administration in 2010. When we interviewed him, Solid Waste Division chief Tracy Takamine said no businesses have been fined so far, though he added he doesn’t have the funds to send out bag police. “We find out on a complaint basis, he said. (On April 6, Recycling Coordinator Hana Steel told The Maui News the County is “investigating several alleged violations.) You can call 270-7880 to report scofflaws. It’s worth noting, however, that a loophole allows three-millimeter plastic bags under the assumption that they’re more likely to be reused and won’t blow away as easily. One millimeter is equal to .001 of an inch. Eyeball that. The ordinance also requires a report by September 1 to assess how many customers are bringing in reusables versus taking out paper bags. But Takamine said any report will be inconclusive. “Just because that requirement was put in doesn’t mean we will get good information, he said. “We do not have funds to do anything. Takamine said his staff did go out in January to do a count, but cautioned the results aren’t scientific. (MauiTime conducted its own unscientific poll at stores
in Kahului, Kihei and Upcountry and found that only about one-quarter of shoppers brought their own bags.) Yet Takamine expressed some optimism. “I see people bringing bags, he said. “People have changed [their] mindset since this ordinance. Jerry Masaki, general manager at Pukalani Superette, estimates at least half of his customers are now bringing their own bags (though he also said there’s been an unintended side-effect: more missing shopping baskets). “Not like they had a choice, but the bulk have changed over, he said. Masaki remembers the days when plastic
who brought in a bag. Other stores, like Paia’s Mana Foods—which never carried plastic bags—and Foodland offer shoppers incentives like credits or free giveaways. The Kahului Wal-Mart has taken a different approach, opting not to provide paper bags to shoppers and instead sell their blue-logo reusables for 25 cents. A hurried couple from Washington who were carting out at least a dozen blue bags told us they found the bag ban “annoying, adding in a deadpan tone, “save the whales. Other tourists praised the ban as progressive. When a Wal-Mart cashier informed Wally Williams from
Despite its faults and deficiencies this is an effort worth rallying around, especially on a small island with a rapidly swelling landfill. was seen as preferable to paper. “A long time ago stores always used paper bags and boxes, he said. “Then the nature conservatives complained about cutting down trees, so we switched over to plastic. Bonnie, a K-Mart employee who asked that we not use her last name, isn’t a fan of the plastic bag ban as a cashier or as a consumer. “I don’t like to put cold wet stuff in paper bags, she said. “I guess it’s better for the environment, but paper is not so good either. Kyle Enriquez, an employee at the Makawao recycling center, said he’s noticed a slight decrease in litter since the ban went into effect. At the same time, he noted the numerous produce bags and sandwich bags still floating around the parking lot. “I’m not a visionary, but I saw the ban coming, said Arthur Blaquiere, a shopper at Pukalani Superette who was sporting a Foodland-brand reusable bag when we spoke to him. He said his friends used to laugh at the enormous stash of plastic bags he was saving. “I told ’em, ‘You’re gonna be asking me for those bags someday.’ They fit the trash bin so perfectly.’
S
ome businesses have come up with creative ways to adapt to the bag ban and motivate consumers. Krystal Vogel, a cashier at Pukalani Superette, handed out gold stars to everyone
Connecticut that bags were only available for purchase, he was enthusiastic. “All the islands should do that, he said. “All the states should do that. In fact, Kauai has implemented a similar ban, as have many municipalities on the Mainland (San Francisco, unsurprisingly, was the first). Oregon is currently considering a statewide ban. Clearly the trend is growing. Not everyone sees it as a panacea. “Banning things is a short-term, patchwork solution to a larger rubbish problem, said Masaki. Then there’s the question of whether cloth or thick-plastic bags consumed in mass quantities are any more environmentally friendly than the disposable satchels they’re meant to replace. Reusables are great—if they’re reused. If people lose them, damage them or fail to clean them and then throw them away, they can create an even bigger trash problem. Still, despite its faults and deficiencies this is an effort worth rallying around, especially on a small island with a rapidly swelling landfill. I may have forgotten my bags on 1-11-11, but I’m going to do my best to remember them tomorrow. ■To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1443u

WORDS BY ANU YAGI
AWARD LOSING THE ONLY THING WORSE
THAN THE DEATH OF THE
HAWAIIAN GRAMMY
MIGHT HAVE BEEN THE
HAWAIIAN GRAMMY ITSELF
T
here is a lot of disagreement— some of it nasty—about the Hawaiian Grammy, which died a sad and relatively quiet death last week after an ill-fated seven-year run. But almost everyone agrees on one thing: the award was a squandered opportunity. On the protracted scale of island time, the Best Hawaiian Music Album Award ended before it began. But it came and went in a crescendo of controversy, revealing some ugly truths about the music industry—both on the Mainland and here at home. It was a chance to honor legends in a mostly misunderstood genre and elevate Hawaiian music to international notoriety. Instead, an inherently flawed system—and the artists who knew how to manipulate it— combined with local voter apathy to kill the category and strike a resoundingly sour chord. All we’re left with is

postmortem lamentations for a Grammy that never really was. So what happened? How did something with so much potential go so terribly wrong? And who deserves the blame?
FATAL FLAWS Our coveted, colonized archipelago’s inharmonious history is no secret—at least, not here in Hawaii. And not unlike the igneous isles themselves, our host culture has been razed by regenerative fire. From the ashes of a fragmented people, in the 1970s the Hawaiian Cultural Renaissance was born. In the decades following this resurgence of Hawaiian language and art—helmed by heroes like George
Na‘ope, Gabby Pahinui, the Beamer ‘ohana and Ka‘apana brother, among others— Hawaiian identity has been on a path of radical redefinition. And Hawaiian music has been the heartbeat. With this rebirth came a desire for national and international recognition,
and so the lobbying for the Hawaiian Grammy began. “When you get to the Grammys, it’s a whole new level,” says Dennis Kamakahi, who contributed to three Grammywinning slack-key compilation albums between 2007 and 2009. After years of petitioning, in 2004 Hawaiian music was exhumed from the Grammys’ World Music Field and became a stand-alone category. Finally, it seemed, this long overlooked genre—and its eligible legends—would be given their due. And, generally, the ballots were filled with the right names: Ledward Ka‘apana, Keali‘i Reichel, Kapono Beamer and the Brothers Cazimero. But in the seven years since the category’s inception, the local industry has progressively been wrenched apart over who has and hasn’t won—and why. Just as the infighting reached its pitch, the fat lady sang. Last week, the National Academy of
Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), the presenter of the Grammys, announced a massive restructuring—the largest in the organization’s history. Most notably, the academy whittled its 109 categories to just 78. The Best Hawaiian Music Album award was among those on the chopping block. (Technically it will be absorbed into the Best Regional Roots Music Album category, and compete alongside Native American and Cajun/Zydeco music.) The decision “was almost exclusively about the [low] number of submissions when it came to the Hawaiian music category,” says Bill Freimuth, NARAS’s vice president of awards. Kamakahi sees it as a slap in the face. “It’s telling us Hawaiian musicians that if you don’t have a market as big as pop, rock and the rest of it, then they’re not going to bother with you. It’s like saying, ‘OK, all you ethnic music, you guys fight it out.’ But it’s all different. There’s no real similarity, so how are you going to gauge it?” Others are more resigned. “With the industry [at large] having changed so radically, it doesn’t surprise me,” says five-time nominee Amy Hanaiali’i of the overhaul. Multiple award-winner George Kahumoku Jr. and Hanaiali’i’s brother, Eric Gilliom, concur that the end of the Hawaiian Grammy was easy to forsee. “I’ve had conversations with quite a few members of the Hawaiian music community over the last few years expressing their concerns, [which] were fairly wide-ranging,” says Freimuth. “There were concerns that not enough members of their community had joined the recording academy who were eligible to do so, despite efforts in that area not only by the recording academy itself but by members of the Hawaiian music community.” To qualify as a voting member, an artist must have “received technical or creative credit in any one qualifying category” on at least six tracks for traditional commercial distribution or 12 tracks for digital distribution in the United States, plus pay a membership fee that ranges from $100 for one year of to $420 for five years. Hanaiali’i, Gilliom, Kahumoku and Kamakahi all say that the fees alone have been a deterrent. Kahumoku suggests this could easily be remedied with a benefit concert for and by musicians who often are continually playing for other causes. The money raised, he envisions, would go toward paying for automatic NARAS membership, coupled with entry into the Hawaii Academy of Recording Artists (HARA, presenter of the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards), in which several thousand local artists are already active. NARAS’s restructuring has also resulted in changes to voting rules. All members can still vote in the general field (i.e. Record of The Year, Album of The Year, Song of The Year and Best
New Artist), but whereas members were previously restricted to final-ballot voting in just eight fields (regardless of the number of categories within), members now can vote in up to 20 categories from any field. When asked if he’s still a voting member, Gilliom says, “I bailed on it this year. I knew where it was going.” But he adds that from the beginning, “I’ve been very vocal about this, out on the front lines. It’s not because my sister was nominated and didn’t win—it had nothing to do with that. I’ve been a voting member for seven years; I had a vested interest in seeing the category flourish as a whole, but there were so many loopholes in the process.”
did have a requirement that if it did happen to be a vocal music album that the lyrics on least 51 percent of the tracks needed to be in Hawaiian language.” While the 51 percent-or-more stipulation may seem good on paper, Gilliom contends it was “ill-conceived.” “So what happened? Out comes this instrumental slack-key compilation that won the first year and right away people got hip to the idea of, ‘OK, let’s just do instrumental slack-key records.’ So those got cranked out by the dozens,” says Gilliom. At the same time, Hanaiali’i candidly admits adopting a similar strategy last year, titling her album Amy Hanaiali’i and Slack Key Masters of Hawaii.
“THE BOTTOM LINE,” SAYS LOCAL MUSICIAN ERIC GILLIOM, “IS THAT THE PEOPLE WHO ARE HOLDING THE GRAMMYS FOR THE HAWAIIAN CATEGORY DON’T REPRESENT HAWAIIAN MUSIC.” ‘HO’ BRAH, NO ACT The loophole ringleader is Daniel Ho, and the Bonnie to his Clyde is actress/singer Tia Carrere. Between the two of them, they hold six of the seven Best Hawaiian Music Album awards. Both Carrere and Ho are Hawaiiborn, but they’ve spent their careers in Los Angeles. Kamakahi says Carrere and Ho’s wins are “the result of name recognition.” And many say their music itself isn’t even credibly Hawaiian. “We got highjacked,” says Gilliom plainly. “The Hawaiian music category got highjacked. Daniel Ho had no business doing what he did. For [him], it was like taking candy from a baby.” Gilliom says Ho “figured out the system” and maintained “a calculated, manipulative hold on the process.” He adds that the first couple wins were one thing, but that when Ho continued to claim the prize every year over other, more locally respected performers, that’s when people’s hackles were raised. “Daniel could have done the right thing and stepped out of the category for a year,” says Gilliom. “If you think you’re winning on your merits, step out for a year and see what happens.” “And by the way,” Gilliom adds, “[Daniel’s] not related to Don Ho. I can’t imagine how many voters might have voted on that assumption.” “The bottom line,” Gilliom says, “is that, for the most part, the people who are physically holding the Grammys for the Hawaiian category don’t represent Hawaiian music.” “The guidelines for the category were fairly specific about being music of a traditional nature,” says Freimuth. “We
Kamakahi disagrees with that strategy. “If it’s part of the game, let’s not play the game.” Multiple attempts to contact Ho were unsuccessful, but Kahumoku—who coproduced three winning albums with Ho—defends him. “Daniel is a genius,” he says. “He can play any kine instrument and compose whole symphonies—not just anybody can do that. The people who say that stuff [about him] are assholes. It’s all pure jealousy.” (Carrere also didn’t respond to our requests for comment, but in a blog post titled “Why am I the poster child for discontinued categories?” she wrote, “Hey, at least they chose a nice picture of me holding my Grammy.”) Kahumoku says Carrere and Ho “cannot help if the Mainland is where they found good jobs for themselves.” Though Ho is his junior, Kahumoku says he’s learned a lot from him. Kahumoku admits that Ho knows a lot about marketing in the music industry, but thinks that’s to his credit. Sadly, Grammy-initiated infighting isn’t limited to Hawaii-based artists versus Mainland musicians. Kahumoku says the controversy has formed a rift between him and longtime friend and collaborator Cyril Pahinui. In the end, for local artists the concern is that true Hawaiian music isn’t being represented. “My main beef is not with [NARAS],” says Kamakahi (a sentiment Gilliom echoes). “A lot of people are going to think this is what Hawaiian music is... and I can tell you that [Carerre’s album] is not Hawaiian music. It’s an insult. Is Hollywood going to dictate what Hawaiian music is? What we gotta do? Be in a movie? Live and
write our songs from Hollywood?” “As with anything, it’s all political,” Kamakahi adds. “But is this music or politics?” Even Ho’s supporters admit he gamed the system for his own gain. And the fact that he was so successful speaks to perhaps the biggest reason behind the Hawaiian Grammy’s demise: the lack of local participation.
FOOL’S GOLD “There’s all this situation surrounding Daniel Ho, but I don’t think that was the bottom line,” says Hanaiali’i. She, like others, says there was a huge disparity between votes that came from the Mainland and votes from Hawaii. But it’s a metric that’s impossible to assess. Even the number of votes cast in any category is virtually unknown. Even Grammy officials don’t know, says Friemuth, adding that the votes are tallied by an independent accounting firm called Deloitte. Friemouth adds that “Deloitte would give us a heads up if there [are] numbers in any particular category so low as to cause alarm,” but that never happened with the Hawaiian category. Still, it’s anecdotal knowledge that local participation was severely lacking. That’s especially unfortunate because— with approximately 11,000 total voting members, most of whom likely didn’t cast votes in the Hawaiian category—a couple hundred votes would likely have been enough to sway the results. “NARAS opened the door, and very few people from Hawaii signed up,” says Gilliom. “I can’t tell you how many guys, local musicians on Maui, when I’ve said, ‘Why aren’t you a voter?’ And they say, ‘Me?’ ‘Yeah you, dude!’ It’s so far removed from their imagination—it’s the Grammys. It’s the Mainland. I don’t think Hawaii ever took ownership of it.”
PARADISE LOST With the Hawaiian Grammy gone attention is again focused on local honors like the Na Hoku Hanohano and Hawaiian Music Awards. “The Grammys do not define Hawaiian music, the Hokus define Hawaiian music,” says Hanaiali’i. Gilliom, Kamakahi and Kahumoku all agree. But, of course, local awards will never carry the cache of a Grammy. They may get it right, but they won’t bring the recognition (and, let’s face it, record sales) of a national accolade. The Hawaiian Grammy could have been a jewel in the crown of the Hawaiian Renaissance. Instead, the opportunity was frittered away, and the world was left with an image of our local industry—fair or not—as a petty, disconnected bedlam filled with folk either too stupid or too apathetic to participate. We had a chance to shine on the world stage, and we choked. Some shame, eh? ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1443a

cotch is generally not thought of as a ladies’ drink. And, admittedly, my forays into Scotch drinking have been sparse—a quick lesson under e Charlie Seibert of Capische? and more in-depth studies on the topic of single-malt Scotches with Ron Taylor at Mama’s Fish House. So when I caught wind of the Scotch pairing dinner and cigar tasting at the Grand Wailea with the Glenlivet Brand ambassador Rick Edwards, I jumped at the chance to expand my horizons. The Scottish have been distilling malted d barley as long as they’ve been standing, and the Glenlivet distillery and brand was founded in 1824. Edwards explains the nuances: “What’s the difference between a Scotch and an Irish whiskey? A Scotch is distilled two times, while an Irish whiskeyy will have been distilled three times and they still can’t get it right. Ninety percent of the flavor in your Scotch comes from the he wood barrels it’s aged in.” The daunting task of pairing courses off food with jiggers of different Scotch fell to Chef Isaac Bancaco who defied laws of physics with with his ahi Wellington. The ahi remained rare despite being baked in a golden puff pastry. It was joined by a divine shiro miso sauce that flourished with Chinese mustard. The paired menu was graceful enough to appeal to the foodies while embracing the delicate honey, citrus, spicy and oaky flavors in the Scotches. The “peanut butter and jelly” foie gras and unagi wasn’t very reminiscent of its namesake, but delicious nonetheless. Unagi has a similar gooey and crisp consistency; both are subtly
matched with fruity pohaa berry jam, mac nuts and mac nut butter. The final course of roasted lamb persillade paired with a savory malasada and dusted with celery salt sounds daunting—but when you’ree drinkingg you

DJ SHADOW
In Los Angeles, 10/31/09 (Blunderbuss; 2010). A “live” DJ these days is almost always going to show up with a laptop. Not DJ Shadow. He points out that even though DJs have “access to millions of songs [they’re] still playing the same fifty over and over again. There’s something wrong with that.” DJ Shadow’s words are backed by this 75-minute live mix recorded from his all-vinyl show performed on three turntables at the Park Plaza Hotel in downtown L.A. on Halloween night. The mix features excellent combinations of familiar, crowdpleasing hits like MGMT’s “Kids” and Kanye West’s “Love Lockdown” and lesser-known but no less compelling pieces. The track featuring “Puff Rider” is deep, dark and, well, kind of freaky. Though he’s most at home with hip-hop, DJ Shadow veers all over the place: East Coast rap, West Coast rap, some metal, drum n’ bass—all take a turn. His round of rappers from the Dirty South is particularly noteworthy; the non-stop flow from a rapper from Mississippi blaring over heavy dub-step is sure to get people on their feet. And the detour into 2 Live Crew’s “Sally (That Girl)” is a sheer joy. The knowledge that it was all done live and laptopfree makes it even sweeter. (If you want to see a live all-vinyl mix for yourself, be sure to stop in at Requests this Saturday for DJ Blast and Jay.P). - Ben Lowenthal

ight now,” says legendary Cuban musician Juan de Marcos Gonzalez in his patient Cuban lilt, “we’re damaging the Earth and the Earth is taking revenge. But if we take care of the planet, we’re going to become very homogeneous—with one race, one culture throughout the world. Otherwise we’re going to disappear.” Just hopefully not before Thursday night. De Marcos says his mission is “to show the wealth, diversity and vitality of Cuban music to the world.” He’s made a name for himself spearheading groups like the Buena Vista Social Club and, now, the AfroCuban All Stars—who will be making their inaugural trip to Maui. Even in the blended future he foresees, de Marcos says the preservation of “cultural styles” will be important. He likens this acculturation to his own country, Cuba. “All these guys came [from Spain] to Cuba and brought slaves from Africa,” he says. “All of these cultures mixed in Cuba to create something different, something unique. But even Spain, for seven centuries, was under the power of the Muslims—so they are mixed as well. All of these mixes created
something special. This is Cuban.” De Marcos vividly recounts his childhood in Havana. “When I was a kid, I grew up inside of the Cuban Revolution, so we never had a great relationship with America. But the United States is only 95 miles away from the Cuban border, so we had the radio. Everyday we would listen to radio from America. One was called WXAM broadcasting from Key West, Florida and the second one was KAAY, coming from Little Rock, Arkansas. KAAY used to have a program every night where they broadcasted underground music. We used to copy this material and perform it in our private parties.” It was then that de Marcos says he fell in love with contemporary music, “in the golden age of American and British rock and roll.” Trilingual and with a doctorate in hydraulic engineering, de Marcos says he’s always had “a strong tenacity for working.” Though he was encouraged to pursue academics and music simultaneously, engineering work was “a proper career” at the behest of his father, Marcos Gonzalez, “one of the greatest Cuban musicians of the ‘40s and ‘50s.” The formation of the Buena Vista Social Club, among his other work, is a tribute to his father, his father’s friends— and their music. “At a certain point I listened to Santana,” de Marcos says. “I listened to this guy who was one of my idols and I heard him use cha cha cha and mambo with a rock and roll band. I said, well, if these great guys are performing with Cuban music it means that World Music is really important. So I
turned my eyes back, and in 1973 I started performing only Cuban music. It was an important step in my career because I rediscovered my roots. It’s very important to stand on your roots.” “In 1990 I had to make a decision,” continues de Marcos. “It’s difficult to work two, so very different jobs. So I made the decision to become a full time musician. Since that time, I’ve been working as a musician, sometimes very successfully.” But de Marcos says even his bands’ successes—especially alongside “the old guys” of the Buena Vista Social Club, including Arsenio Rodriguez and Ibrahim Ferrer—didn’t prepare him for the international acclaim he’s enjoyed. “In those times, you couldn’t sell even 10,000 copies of a World Music Album,” he says. “Of course, if the album is good you can get the respect of journalists, but selling 12 million copies? That was not normal.” Ultimately, de Marcos says, it’s about the quality of his ethnic music and the contributions it stands to make on a global stage. Which goes back to his predictions for the future. One race or no, preserving what’s worth exalting about your culture— specifically through music— says de Marcos, “is important because in this way you are doing something vital [and] it’s the only way you have to be really at peace. Once you are preserving your culture, you are doing something that is going to stay.” ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1443ae

PICKS
This Week's Picks Northern Exposure Friday & Saturday (April 15 & 16), 7:30pm/Sunday (April 17) 2pm, Steppingstone Playhouse, Queen Kaahumanu Center, $15 students & seniors / $18 adults
I like plays—and I see a lot of them. Most of them are pretty good, but a handful are really good—like MAPA’s Theophilus North, for example. The only bad news? This is the final weekend of the show’s three-weekend run, which means there are only three nights left to enjoy this showcase of full-sensory wit. A relatively unknown work by Mathew Burnett, based on novel by Thorton Wilder, Theophilus is set in the spring of 1926 and follows the bibliophilic adventures of one extraordinary Mr. North (played by Eric Petersen, pictured). “There’s a delicacy to this piece that’s beautiful and infectious. It speaks to us,” says director David C. Johnston. Theophilus is eloquently written, ingeniously blocked and wonderfully executed by the local cast of nine. Visually, the palate is deliciously drenched in cloudswept creamsicle and rusty bike-wheel reverie, thanks to a cohesively coupled set designed by Caro Walker, and costumes designed by Kathleen Schulz, plus lighting designed by Mark Collmer. Start stretching for your standing ovation. 244-8760; mauiacademy.org PHOTO BY DAVID HESSEMER

DIVERSIONS, DALLIANCES & DATES
From the Jaws of Defeat Saturday (April 16), 9pm, Stella Blues Cafe, Kihei, $14
Environmental activists/ hardcore band Defeater promise to “redefine the term forward-thinking music” with their socially conscious sound. Their debut effort, Travels, is a concept album, which they say is “unique in that each song reads as a narrative chapter from a novel while creating an embellished piece of fiction set in post-WWII America in a broken home.” So yeah, ambitious. And like many bands these days, Defeater is going green (which reminds me, next week Wednesday is April 20) by creating packaging that’s all-recycled and ultra ecofriendly. Upping their hip factor is their sophomore release, Lost Ground, a double 7” LP. The Boston-based band will make a stop this Saturday at Stella Blues for a heavy-hitting quadruple billing with Oahu’s Die Alone and Maui’s own Order of the White Rose and Minor Setback. Yep. All four bands for just 14 bucks—and the dictionary update (bring your own Sharpie) is free. 874-3779; stellablues.com / bridge9.com/defeater

Burning Questions
Saturday (April 16), 10am-6pm, Requests Music, Wailuku, free
Sunday (April 17), 5pm, Yokouchi Pavilion, MACC, $35
If you don’t think Requests is the coolest record shop on Earth, take me to your leader. On second thought, don’t. Why? National Record Store Day is this Saturday, and I don’t want to miss Requests’ big party (after that, feel free to beam me up). Not only will they have performances by Arise plus Rabbitt and The Propers, but DJ Jay.P and perennial Best of Maui winner DJ Blast will be spinning wax like Rumpelstiltskin spins gold. But mic check this out: GRAB BAGS! Gasp! Because I have friends in high places (not aliens... yet), yours truly got first contact with this year’s goods. But listen, I’ve been sworn to secrecy about the specifics (PickiLeak: it’s all awesome!), so I’ll instead remind you about last year’s grab bag awesomeness: I got a MGMT slipmat, a stack of exclusive vinyl releases and even a reusable bag (record-sized, of course) that I won’t be embarrassed to carry around. (Want to get even more excited? Turn to page 14, where Album of the Week features a special vinyl edition in honor of this extra special day.) 244-9315; @RequestsHI on Twitter
I have agonized over what Katchafire means. I understand it’s short for “catch a fire,” and they began their musical career as a Bob Marley cover band (what modern reggae band doesn’t?). But what does it really mean? Marley’s “catch a fire” was a veritable “go to hell,” a sentiment he expressed to slavedrivers. And surely this sociopolitical awareness is applicable, with songs like “Frisk Me Down.” Or perhaps it’s the katchafire of a bonfire at the beach surrounded by family and friends, the elusive ideal of “Get Away.” The band’s easy rhythms and laid-back vibe certainly exemplify this meaning. Or, it could absolutely be plain old catching fire, a reference to the band’s burning passion and drive, which has earned them the title of New Zealand’s hardestworking band. An alternative, of course, would be an implication of 420 friendliness, a la “Collie Herb.” Or maybe I’m just obsessing. Whatever it means, Katchafire is awesome, plain and simple. Be sure to catch this show, where they’ll be performing alongside Ooklah the Moc and Rebel Souljahz. 242-7469; mauiarts.org [Ynez Tongson]

Sign Language ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) When the theoretical becomes actual, it’s a whole new ball game. Don’t be scared, though. Even though the real life version of your vision or fantasy is much more complex, daunting, and imperfect than the one living in your imagination—it’s also real. It’s worth tackling and accepting these things. It might not seem like it at first, but those complicating ripples are actually going to make this experience richer, more challenging, exciting, engaging and ultimately better than if your fantasy had simply become reality exactly as you envisioned it. Of course, if you’re too freaked, you’ll miss out. You’re not too freaked, are you? TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Placing blame is sometimes important, especially when it comes to someone taking responsibility for something they screwed up, and taking pains to keep it from happening again. However, much of the time pointing fingers accomplishes nothing and in fact creates a situation that’s much less productive, enjoyable and successful for everyone—including yourself. It’s okay to figure out the root of the problem in your own head, but before you voice your conclusions, ask yourself if much (or any) good would come of such disclosure (which might come off more like accusations than anything else), then act accordingly. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Remember what’s important. It’s so easy to get caught up in others’ perceptions, or the politics of a situation, and lose sight of what actually matters—mostly what’s in your heart and what you do about it. Whether that’s what someone else wants you to do is irrelevant (unless they have significant power over you, in which case you might not have much choice). Your job is to stay attuned to that inner voice that compels you to act in a way that feels right to you, and, at least to some extent, ignore anyone that tells you otherwise. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) There’s a time to spend and a time to save. Sometimes, hoarding what you’ve got is the smart thing to do, but often it doesn’t do you much good—while spending it intelligently might prove fairly wonderful. This is one of those times when the benefits of wise, thoughtful expenditures will far outweigh the theoretical pluses of banking your cash. By “wise” and “thoughtful,” I don’t necessarily mean investments in your future (though those can qualify), but rather investments in your present. If you can greatly enhance your quality of life right now without severely diminishing your ability to enjoy it later, why shouldn’t you? LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Being real doesn’t mean letting it all hang out all the time. While being deceptive or dishonest is a bad idea, you can still be authentic without revealing everything about yourself at every turn. Be an open book, as you’re inclined—that is, honestly answer any question that’s asked, and offer any information that seems relevant to the situation at hand. Then shut up about the rest. Sure, you have nothing to hide, and you’re pretty great overall. However, remember this: wearing a little mystery can only add to your allure. This week, try it. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) It’s generally a good idea to give someone else time to make up their mind, particularly if the decision is a weighty or tricky one. At some point, though, enough’s enough, and it’s time for them to come to some conclusion on the matter. If you think you’re being at all hasty, consult with more than one friend you consider wise and successful in this area of life before you push the issue. Then, when you do, don’t jump right into ultimatum mode, but gently begin the process of letting them know time is running out. Hopefully, Jeopardy theme music won’t be necessary, but if after a few weeks or months (depending on your
patience) they still can’t decide, you may have to accept that they’ll probably never be able (or willing) to. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Let’s say you were writing an email to a friend about someone you were dating—a very frank and explicit email, brutally listing all their flaws, as well as the things you like about them. Then, you accidentally send the email to the person in question. Such a gaffe is very likely a deal-breaker, but there’s a chance you can salvage the situation—by quite simply owning what you said, instead of trying to desperately backpedal. It might be hard for you diplomatic Libras to claim your harshest words and feelings, but demonstrating that you can be that honest and real can only work in your favor. If you find yourself in such a situation, try it—it’s not like you have anything to lose. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Scorpios abide by their own set of personalized ethics that don’t always perfectly coincide with those popular in modern society. I don’t think there’s any stopping you from pursuing these activities you so conveniently rationalize as “harmless” (or nearly so), even if they’re sketchy. That’s fine. Just do everyone else a favor of keeping them secret. If you reveal your questionable behaviors, you put other people in the touchy spot of having to be tacit accomplices to whatever you’re up to, or having to call you on it. Better to eat your cake in secret, then hide the crumbs. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC.21) Perfectly lovely people are still occasionally capable of doing perfectly abominable things when they’re under stress. In such circumstances, I’m not suggesting you ought to issue them a free pass, but an isolated incident of bad behavior should probably be met with compassion rather than judgment. Patterns, even emerging ones, should be addressed directly, but the best way to deal with a freak-out is to simply be supportive and help everyone move on. That, my dear, is what friends are for. This week, don’t be judge and jury, parent, or critic. Just be a friend. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) What you’re up to is a lot like raking dry leaves on a very windy day. Much of your labor is erased by the gusts scattering the piles you’ve meticulously made. How frustrating! You can, of course, continue to slog away at the task, and, given your persistence and determination, you will eventually get it done. But ask yourself: Is this really something that has to be finished today? I know you’re leery of excuses to procrastinate, but sometimes, in the name of efficiency and actually accomplishing your goals, your best bet is to put off a task until you can accomplish it without the very elements fighting against you. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Having an opinion is a fine thing (and it’s not like I could stop you). However, sometimes it crosses over into being judgmental, which isn’t something that’s likely to bring you joy or do anyone any good. It’s perfectly fine to steer clear of an aspect of someone’s life that you’re not crazy about, but shunning or condemning them for it is just generally a bad idea. Instead, focus on the positive things you enjoy, and change the subject rather than harp on your push-button topics, if you want to avoid pointless unproductive conflict and stress this week—and I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Symbols are just that: symbols. Invest them with too much meaning and they could obscure the truth of whatever they’re supposed to represent. Is a marriage a ring, for example? A ring doesn’t make someone less likely to cheat or more likely to be a good partner. Whether or not someone wears your ring might or might not have meaning; instead of getting too caught up on one little thing, take a look at the broader issues behind the symbol you’re quietly obsessing about. If things seem sweet otherwise, I’d suggest letting go of this particular symbol; it’s ultimately irrelevant.
