Brand New Dengue? It’s been ten years since Maui’s last dengue fever outbreak. In that time, says Maui health officer Dr. Lorrin Pang, the disease has “exploded worldwide.” And it may be back on the Valley Isle, with five suspected cases in East Maui. When we spoke earlier this week, Dr. Pang said none of the cases had been confirmed (and that, in fact, at least one possible case had been ruled out). But, he emphasized,“There is definitely a threat—this is something we need to stay on top of.” Pang said eradication efforts are focused on areas with a lot of mosquitoes and a lot of tourists. “It’s spread mosquito-man, mosquito-man, so it’s essential to keep it contained,” he explained. “The Hana coast is really our Achilles’ heel.” Pang encouraged homeowners to clear brush and standing water within 50 feet of their houses. And he said anyone experiencing symptoms—fever, headache, joint and muscle aches, rash, vomiting— should see a doctor right away. (He added that those can also be signs of an unrelated but potentially fatal bacterial infection called leptospirosis.) Asked where people should turn for updates, Pang pointed to the state Department of Health. The DOH Web site does feature basic information about dengue, but as of this writing the most recent news concerned two cases on Oahu—posted March 24. Meaning that, in large part, we may be on our own.

Engendering Debate Civil unions grabbed all the headlines, but another, no less controversial bill related to the LGBT community is still moving through the legislature. HB546, which would make it illegal for employers to discriminate on the basis of “gender identity or expression,” has cleared

both the House and Senate and is awaiting Gov. Abercrombie’s signature. Gay and civil rights groups and major labor unions including the AFL-CIO and Hawaii Government Employees Association support the bill. But, naturally, it has detractors as well. In testimony provided to the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Hawaii Family Forum (“family,” as ever, being code for “religious”) suggested the bill would undermine the ability of “Christian and other organizations with an opposing view...to act on their beliefs without facing stigma or punishment.” Church groups played the victim with civil unions and lost. Apparently it’s still their favorite trick.

that would surely resonate with Maui’s Ali‘i Chang, who died last week at age 69. Chang founded the Ali‘i Kula Lavender Farm, and for years his smiling visage greeted residents and visitors who flocked to the little slice of well-manicured paradise. Chang was raised on a farm on Oahu, and opened a tropical garden on Maui in 1976. He would later buy a plot of land in Kula, and eventually turn it into a thriving enterprise. “His first love was always nurturing the land,” wrote Chang’s business partner, Lani Medina Weigert, in a tribute posted on the farm’s Web site. “He was a man with a lighthearted touch who was quick to laugh, with a childlike spirit.” A memorial service is scheduled for July 9 at the Lavender Farm. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1444c

EH BRAH!

NEWS OF THE WEIRD WHEN GEEKS ATTACK In March, a teenager was charged with attempting to rob the Fun 4 All comic book store in Southfield, Michigan, with a homemade bomb (that looked realistic but turned out to be harmless) and presenting a list of the specific collectors’ merchandise (not money) he wanted. After the clerk balked at the demands, the robber relented, paid cash for a few of the items on the list and left. When arrested later, he called the incident a “social experiment.”

BUSTED! The manager of the Channel Islands Cooperative store in the British territory of Jersey acknowledged to BBC News in November that a shopper’s complaint was justified and that refunds would be made. The customer believed she had been overcharged by five pounds (about $8) because, while weighing fruits and vegetables, the clerk had been leaning over so that her breasts accidentally increased pressure on the scale.

PERVS ON PARADE (1) Salt Lake County corrections officer Robert Monson, 38, was charged in December with having sex with a female he met while she was in lockup. According to the woman, the couple’s trysts were not impeded by her ankle monitor, which Monson insisted was “sexy.” In fact, shortly after the monitor was removed,

the relationship ended. (2) A 50-year-old man was charged with indecent exposure near Yakima, Washington, in March when he jumped in front of a woman, genitals exposed, but otherwise dressed in a diver’s wet suit, mask and bright orange gloves.

ART AND SOLE Scottish artist Jane Forbes, 47, won the “Shoe Is Art” competition in Dundee in late 2010 with a work (“Ad Infinitum”) that a University of Dundee spokesman called “awe-inspiring.” Forbes painted (and photographed) the same pair of shoes every day for 66 consecutive days, hypothesizing that subtle differences in her “mood” would be detectable in any variations in the paint jobs.

INCOMPETENT CRIMINALS Timothy James Chapek, 24, was charged with burglary in March after he broke into a house in Portland, Oregon, and had a shower. Unknown to him, the resident was in another part of the house and came, with his two German shepherds and a gun, to confront Chapek through the closed bathroom door, while calling 911. Fearing the dogs and the gun, Chapek simultaneously dialed 911 himself, begging that officers come quickly and arrest him. ■

I get it. You’ve got some kittens to get rid of. And I give you credit for not just dumping them in a cane field to become road kill or another roving pack of mangy strays. But forcing your daughter—who couldn’t have been more than six—to sit out in the hot sun for hours pleading with passerby while you lounged in the shade smoking cigarettes and gabbing on your cell phone? Borderline child abuse, lady. I suppose I should be glad you’re not going to be in charge of any more lives, since when we drove past the second time your poor kid had managed to unload all but a single cat. Maybe let her keep it, so at least she has one friend in the house. READER FEEDBACK

T

he story and video depicting my April 12 altercation with Duane “Dog” Chapman’s security team and Officer Nelson Johnson of the Maui Police Department set off quite a firestorm (scan the QR code at right to read my account and view the footage). It was picked up by various local and national media outlets and has sparked a heated and ongoing discussion about media freedoms and aggressive law enforcement. I can consider legal action against both Chapman’s production company and Maui County. But it’s my sincere hope that this story will quickly become much bigger than me. Over the past week, many people have shared their frustrations and stories regarding MPD. If we stand together, and demand reform and accountability, I believe we can get to a place where the police once again fulfill their role as public servants. Below you’ll find a sampling of reader comments culled from mauitime.com; unlike the Web, these comments were carefully selected to represent different views. I encourage you to join the conversation. - Tommy Russo, Publisher

Please Tommy, file a lawsuit against MPD and Dog and his crew—you will have so much support from the people of Maui and the rest of the world. I live in Canada now and I saw this, so people out there are watching. —Tonya I am shocked and disappointed by MPD. How can this cop still be on the job? Good luck, Tommy. Oh boo hoo. How would you like it if the next time you were in a parking lot talking to friends, fans or strangers, some guy came up and started videoing your actions and then played the ACLU card and refused to stop when you asked? This little melee is hardly news at all—unless you own a newspaper, in which case your ego would make it front-page news. — Bored enough to comment Why is it that everyone I know has a bad opinion of cops? Gee, look at the video. I know there are good cops. Where are you? You’re becoming outnumbered. We know you put your life in danger. You’re trained for this. Did you not also train to maintain your integrity? Maybe Tommy was being a punk. That does not give the officer the

right to do what he did. — Anonymous I predict this whole thing will quickly be forgotten. Nobody really cares what happens to hack journalists like Russo. I would slap him too if he stuck a camera in my face. My hat’s off to Officer Johnson for maintaining composure. — Jerry Morales F the record, For II’m hardly a fan of MauiTime or Mr. M Russo, but sometimes R you y gotta look at the bigger picture (thug b celebs, freedom of the c press, bad cops). You p need to get this story n out o to as many media outlets as possible— o spread it everywhere. s A lot of local media may m not cover it, but some will. s — Anonymous JJust because you were within i hi your llegall rights i h doesn’t mean you weren’t acting like a jerk. You didn’t deserve to get hit, but why stick around and make the situation worse for an “F-list” celebrity? — Abe Kudos to MauiTime and Tommy for sharing this. A Place In The Sun Living off the grid isn’t easy, but it is possible. And Jason King wants to show you how “Buildings, too, are children of Earth and Sun.” - Frank Lloyd Wright

D

own a winding private drive on Maui’s northeastern arch, Jason King’s solarpowered home is perched amidst his manicured lawn and gardens, overlooking a malie bay. Atop his luxury hale are 23 solar panels that power his entire life. With a dual Outback inverter and 24-count battery bank, it’s a robust system that King says, “powers my car, phat sound system, home movie theater, laundry, refrigerator, hot tub, sauna—every single luxury there is.” “This is groundbreaking,” says King, his passion apparent. “I’m off oil. And it was totally feasible.” King says he feels it’s his “duty” to “let the world know that this can be done.” King points to the zenith of his sustainableliving achievements, his Chevrolet Volt—a lithium-ion battery-powered hybrid vehicle, rated by the EPA as the most fuel-efficient car sold in the U.S. King says it’s the only Volt in the state, and possibly the only totally solarpowered car in the world. “I’ve been trying to live a sustainable lifestyle for years now,” says King. “But still driving a frickin’ car was killing me. So this, this was it. This was the last big step.” Taking that last big step took time, money and guts. “Because no one was doing it, there was no one to ask if it could be done,” King says. Not only is the Volt “so technologically advanced” that if it were to break he’d likely have to ship it the Mainland for repairs, but King’s foremost concern was how to devise a system that would effectively power a vehicle that requires “13 kilowatt hours [kwh] from empty to full—like having five hot tubs running at once.” After exhaustive research and assistance—namely from Michael Schwarz of Sunstation LLC, who “worked his ass off and did an amazing job”—King has pioneered the successful implementation of “technology that has been here forever.” And having worked out a lot of the logistical kinks, King wants to share what

10 APRIL 21, 2011

he’s learned. “People who are scared and think they can’t afford it need to realize that they can’t afford not to.”

“The day, water, sun, moon, night—I do not have to purchase these things with money.” - Plautus “The whole concept of buying gas that’s been raped out of the earth, refined and shipped across the planet—and we go to war for it—it’s so unnecessary! It’s ludicrous!” exclaims King. And, he says, having an electric car while “still plugging into the grid and getting power from diesel generators” negates a lot of the environmental benefit. Powered by just nine solar panels, King estimates the system charging his Volt cost him around $7,000, equal to about two years’ worth of would-be gas expenditures. “That means in two years not only is my driving going to be pollution free, it’s going to be free,” he says. “I get about 50 miles [per charge],” King says, adding he only exceeds that range “maybe once every month or two. “ “[Unlike] a lot of other electric cars, you don’t have ‘range anxiety,’ scared you’re going to get stuck on the side of the road,” he says. “If I do need to go beyond my range, there’s a little generator [and] I get 40 miles per gallon. I can go 350 miles without stopping.” The car comes with a 120 volt cord for charging, but King has added a 240 volt charger. He says he charges his car during the day, meaning the energy is “going from

the panels straight to the car and barely taxing my batteries at all.” “I have to say, I’ve never been a big Chevy fan,” he admits, “but they did an amazing job on this car. It’s hella fun to drive, it doesn’t make any noise, and the cool thing about it is electric motors develop all their torque instantly. So when you hit the accelerator—not the gas, but the accelerator—it’s like, boom!”

“Stand a little less between me and the sun.” – Diogenes “I kind of got screwed because I was impatient—but it was impatience for a good reason,” says King. Before buying the Volt, King says he first tried biodiesel, “but the local fuel available on Maui damaged my vehicles and my generator.” Frustrated, King decided to try the hybrid route. (Laughing, he adds, “I asked all my friends, ‘If I drove a $100,000 Tesla—but it was all solar powered—would I still look like a pretentious douche bag?’ And without hesitation, all of them said ‘yes.’”) Disturbed by the “lackadaisical” response from local Chevy dealerships—and facing upwards of “several years” before he could buy one in-state—King shipped a Volt in from California. “The car is expensive,” says King of the Volt’s $40,280 sticker price. “But it has a [maximum] $7,500 federal tax rebate, and you can get a $4,500 Hawaii rebate. That brings the car down to the low $30,000 range, which is what any decent new car costs.”

However, King says he was denied both tax benefits. On the federal level, the New Qualified Plug-in Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit applies, as King explains, “only if you owe $7,500 in taxes.” Locally, King was ineligible because he didn’t purchase his Volt in Hawaii. “I would have loved to keep the money in Hawaii and support the local Maui car dealership that’s going to be servicing it,” he says. “So basically, I got punished for being one of the first ones.” King feels he was penalized for being a pioneer, and expresses frustration at the roadblocks he’s encountered. “If our government really gave a shit and really wanted to do something to save the environment, rather than subsidizing oil, they would subsidize this for every house in America,” he says. “How many jobs would that create? And instead of paying your electric bill every month, you’d pay a little bit back towards the government. It would be a win, win, win, win situation.”

“At rest, however, in the middle of everything is the sun.” – Nicolaus Copernicus “I don’t have any internal combustion engines anymore,” says King, pointing to a neat row of electric tools. “Lawnmower, chainsaw, weed whacker—it’s all powered by the sun. It’s mind boggling to think of all the things that are done with the sun’s energy. That the very sun that grows the grass provides the power to the tools to cut the grass… that inside, the freezer is turning the sun into cold.” Outside, King’s hot tub has a view of the last breaching humpbacks of the season, and runs on a solar system independent from the house (which King says would otherwise have an operating cost of $150 per month, given Maui’s electricity rates). A small solar panel powers a pump that simply circulates water through a black plastic lining stretched out in a sunny spot on the lawn. What King is doing may seem ambitious. And it is. But here’s what he hopes everyone takes away: “What I’m doing may cost more in the beginning, but in the end you’re saving money and doing the environment a great service.” ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1444a1

W

hat are you wearing? Whatever it is, chances are your garments polluted the Earth before adorning your body. Ditto the fabric you sleep under, drape on your walls and use to dry yourself off after a day at the beach. When it comes to big polluters, the textile industry is second only to industrialized agriculture. Since most major textile manufacturers have moved off American soil, we don’t often hear a lot about the damage the industry causes. Pesticides are used to grow cotton; chemical agents are used to process the plant fibers into fabric; and more dangerous compounds go into the dying process. The result is cheaper clothes—at a great cost to the planet. Fortunately, there are a number of Maui shops trying to make a difference in the garment industry. At Da Green Tee (8715326) in Kahului, you’ll find bamboo towels and bedding in all sizes and colors. They also sell bamboo and organic cotton T-shirts and re-usable shopping bags. Bamboo is an up-and-coming sustainable fabric; it grows quickly and doesn’t require pesticides or chemical fertilizers. And people like to wear it because the feel and drape is similar to silk. Hemp is a “bast” plant, meaning the fiber used to create the materials comes from the stalk of the plant. Naturally insect resistant, it also requires no pesticides. And hemp is efficient—a field of hemp can produce a yield three times greater than cotton. You can find great hemp garments for men and women at The Hemp House (579-8880)

in Paia, along with bags, backpacks and accessories. Wings Hawaii (wingshawaii.com) has embraced the sustainable model for their upcoming summer collection, using an organic nettle and cotton handwoven fabric. The nettle is grown in the Himalayas and handwoven by villagers, and Wings is adding organic cotton as well as bamboo and cotton blends. They’re also utilizing recycled fabric, including pieces of tablecloths and napkins, which lend a unique quality to their signature looks. All of the designs are created on Maui— from the sketches through the dying and sewing at Wings’ Pauwela cannery studio. They also hand-screen Ts, and make stunning jewelry. (Check it all out at their open house and fashion show on May 1 from 5-8pm.) hat does planting gardens in our schools have to do with the health and well-being of the next generation? Everything. With the massive industrialization of food production and distribution, a huge disconnect has grown between kids and the things they eat. The good news: a recent movement by local educators, chefs and volunteers to create edible school gardens is working to reverse this troubling trend. On the day I show up, the Kihei Elementary garden is buzzing with activity. It’s harvest day, and the students are gathering ingredients to make pizza and salad on the spot. Chefs Dan Fiske and Christopher Kulis (of A Private Maui Chef and Capische?, respectively) lead the classes through identifying and picking veggies, fresh herbs and other goodies they planted in October of last year. Fiske and Capishe? owner Brian Etheredge offer financial support to pay the garden coordinator, a position filled by Kirk Surrey. Volunteer project manager Nio Kindla says the idea was sprouted from South Maui Sustainability, whose mission is to create action through education. “We started [here] with three raised gardens, one teacher and 26 students, Kindla says. “Now we have 26 teachers, 650 students and 10,000 square feet. Lehn Huff, coordinator for the Maui School Garden Network, is a retired educator who is now dedicating her time to championing school gardens. “We are asking schools to identify six supporters, from PTA or businesses to individuals, to start a foundation for these gardens, says Huff. “With these partnerships in place, the gardens will be less dependent on a single funding source that can make or break a garden program.

G

rowing local is good for the environment, but it’s also good for our health. Nearly 30 percent of Hawaii keiki are obese, while the national obesity rate for kids has tripled in the past 30 years. Initiatives from the Federal Government like Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move, and the Fruits

& Veggies More Matters program aim to re-educate families and students on eating right. The Center for Disease Control assists in local programs as well, contributing to a Community Work Day effort called Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW), in partnership with the Department of Health and other agencies. The goal is to diminish health issues and prevent obesity through several programs at the hyper-local level—including school gardens. The CPPW’s mission is spearheaded by executive director Rae Chandler and outreach coordinator Matt Lane. The plan is to mobilize other community members to sponsor and support gardens so they can sustainably operate for years to come. One of the partnerships they’ve formed is with Lehn Huff’s Maui School Garden Network, accessing more than 40 schools with preexisting gardens to see what improvements they can make together. Up at the donated greenhouse space in Omaopio where seedlings and starts for the CPPW projects begin, Lane shows me rows and rows of sprouting plants—the fruits of recent volunteer labor. “If we build the gardens in the right way, the effects will be far reaching, Lane says. “We’re creating a food movement on Maui starting at the heart of our communities, the high schools. We’re breaking down the traditional idea of community gardens by putting them in the schools and getting the community to support them there. We’re taking lessons from other established gardens like Hoa ‘Aina O Makaha in west Oahu, built next to

a school, sustaining itself since 1979. Recent volunteer activity at Lahainaluna High School saw Hawaiian Dredging lending a hand with clearing land, Ace Hardware putting up banners and bringing in 20plus volunteers, Job Corps bringing more volunteers and Napli Kai donating plants and know-how. Other ongoing garden projects include UH Maui, Lokelani High School and Pomaikai Elementary, with the next volunteer day coming up on April 30. The Haiku Elementary School Garden was blessed Mala O Haiku last October, with 2,500 square feet of vegetables, fruit, flowers and native plants. Robin Imonti, the school garden coordinator, hopes that the garden will “grow a few [future] farmers. “I find that the kids are super excited to come into the garden, very curious, and some are already quite knowledgeable, she says. “They love to eat what they grow on the days that we harvest. Her support team includes Haiku Community Association, Haiku Hardware, Maui Bio Soil and, of course, community volunteers. As Kihei Elementary’s harvest pizza party wraps up, Dan Fiske explains his dream for the already flourishing gardens: “I would like to see all this as a garden, he says, gesturing toward the campus’s open space. “Not just food, but tea gardens where kids are sitting down and reading. The great thing here is we can teach, garden and grow all year long. ■To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1444a2

Soiled Plans “

T

he soil is a living organism. It sustains us. And it’s where we’ll all end up. So why do we want to go to war with it?” That’s Vincent Mina of Maui Aloha ‘Aina (MA‘A), discussing something that’s literally right under our feet but also easy to overlook. In January, MA‘A held its annual Body & Soil Conference and on April 29 they’ll host Dr. Hoon Park, an expert in Indigenous Micro-Organisms (IMO), which proponents say can help maintain fertile soil. Also known as Korean Natural Farming, the idea has picked up steam in recent years, spearheaded by Master Han Kyu Cho of the Janong Natural Farming Institute in Seoul. Mina says Hawaii’s soil is “very young” and thus “can get beat up real quick.” He says years of industrial ag, monocropping and petro-chemical fertilizers

have done exactly that—and that IMOs are one way to restore balance and vitality. “Farmers have been drugged,” he says. “They’ve been sold a bill of goods. But I think that’s starting to change.” Mina expresses frustration with the state and county, which he says haven’t thrown their weight behind small, local farms. “You hear a lot of talk about food security and sustainability, but I don’t see the results,” he says. Thus, he concludes, “we have to take things into our own hands, and educate people about other possibilities.” ■ - Jacob Shafer

Green Issues

Former MauiTime columnist and current Maui County Environmental Coordinator Rob Parsons outlines the top three enviro concerns facing the county and state... 1) Injection wells/ Water re-use The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the local DIRE (Don’t Inject, REdirect) Coalition forced the County’s hand on this issue over the past two years, pointing to studies that wastewater reclamation facility injection wells contribute to algae growth and degradation of coastal reef ecosystems. Yet County treatment facilities in Kahului, Kihei and Lahaina collectively continue to inject millions of gallons daily deep into the ground, where it percolates into the ocean through Maui’s porous volcanic substrate. The Arakawa administration is reviewing a number of possible options for expanded water treatment and re-use. Current proposals include one that would incorporate growing a biofuel crop, and using the renewable energy produced to help offset the high electrical costs associated with pumping water to and fro. The key is redefining the term “wastewater” to “wasted water,” and viewing it as the underutilized resource that it is.

Maui’s central valley. But the daily phone calls, e-mails and photos sent to my office over the past several weeks serve as an acute reminder that we have yet to shift the sugar plantation’s unsustainable model to a more robust and nourishing alternative. Think bio-diversity, more jobs (rather than lost jobs), and an abundance of local, healthy foods. How about a community forum of ideas and solutions to kick it off?

3) Local renewable energy choices

2) Cane-burning/ local food production

While the energy goals (40 percent generation from renewables by 2030, and another 30 percent in energy efficiency) set forth by the Lingle administration are laudable, the implementation appears steeped in politics and big business. Wind is our only immediate solution, we’re told, even though it requires diesel backup for non-windy days. Sorry, but with oil prices soaring we must find ways to turn the grid model on its head and return the power to the people. It appears there may be more promise, and fewer problems, with increased solar photovoltaic coverage, geothermal, concentrated solar thermal and, most of all, energy conservation and efficiency. ■

Best Of Maui Awards Ballot It’s that time again

A FEW NOTES ABOUT BALLOT STUFFING:

Time to cast your votes for our annual BEST OF MAUI. Usually, this ballot is decked out with whatever theme we’ve chosen. But this year, we’ve come up with another theme so cool, we want to keep it under wraps. Seriously, you’re gonna really dig it. As usual, categories are organized into five sections: arts & entertainment; food & drink; goods & services; politics & environment; and sports & leisure. We’ve added some new categories this year to spice things up, but you’ll still find all the old standbys. Please VOTE IN AT LEAST 40 CATEGORIES if you want your ballot to be counted. Voting ends May 19.

While most people play it straight, every year a few nefarious folks attempt to stuff the ballot box. To cut down on this, and to ensure the results are fair and accurate, here are a few rules:

★ ONLY ONE (1) BALLOT PER PERSON ★ ALL BALLOTS MUST BE SIGNED ★ NO PHOTOCOPIED BALLOTS WILL BE ACCEPTED ★ MULTIPLE BALLOTS IN THE SAME HANDWRITING WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED ★ BALLOTS MUST BE MAILED IN; NO MORE THAN THREE (3) BALLOTS PER ENVELOPE. ENVELOPES MUST HAVE A RETURN ADDRESS

★ EACH ONLINE BALLOT MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A UNIQUE, VALID E-MAIL ADDRESS

Any ballots that violate these rules—or that sufficiently rouse our suspicion—will not be tallied. We hope it isn’t necessary, but if anyone does attempt to unfairly sway the outcome, we reserve the right to create a Best Ballot Stuffer category. This is not something you want to win—trust us.

You may also notice these convenient little QR codes throughout the ballot that you can scan with your smart phone at any time to take you to our online ballot. llot..

YOU MUST FILL OUT 40 CATEGORIES FOR YOUR VOTE TO COUNT! NOTE: In categories with the LOCAL stamp, only votes for locally owned businesses will be counted; no corporate chains.

Nostalgia and occasional thrills aside, latest Scream sequel doesn’t cut deep Scream 4

★★★★★

Rated R/120 min.

T

hings haven’t changed much in Woodsboro: Sydney Prescott (Neve Campbell) is now an author of true-life survival books, the local sheriff (David Arquette) and his oncefamous reporter wife (Courtney Cox) are enjoying a low-key life and movies based on the brutal murders that took place in the ’90s are still littering movie theaters. Enter a fresh new batch of killings and the return of Ghostface to shake things up. It’s been eleven years since master horror director Wes Craven left us with the wholly unsatisfying Scream 3 and a good six months since the hilariously awful My Soul to Take—easily the worst film Craven has ever made. His new Scream is a mixed bag, better than the last installment but nowhere near as sharp or thrilling as the original. Campbell, Arquette and Cox seem

Worst Thanksgiving ever.

comfortable in their old roles and it’s a pleasure to see them back. I didn’t realize how much I missed Arquette’s loopy local law enforcer, though the scenes where his on-screen marriage to Cox

is on the rocks are a bit uncomfortable, given the fact that the actors’ real-life union reportedly fizzled on set. This is easily the most violent entry in the series, with a clever, gasp-inducing

opening that sets the bar too high for the rest of the film to clear. That’s especially true at the climax (don’t worry, I won’t reveal anything), where Craven goes too far and, frankly, lets the movie get away from him. To be honest, I’m sick of watching kids killing kids. Gore is a given in horror movies, but at a certain point the splatters of blood and impaled teenagers become both excessive and mundane. Tons of young actors are slaughtered before we know or care who they are. Of the large (and largely disposed) cast, a nicely subdued Anthony Anderson and Cox have the best lines, both of which are unprintable here. Kevin Williamson’s screenplay pokes fun at horror movie remakes, a ripe target, but avoids sticking a knife where it counts: namely, needless sequels that feed off nostalgia and offer nothing new. Ghostface hasn’t been scary in a decade. And, unfortunately, the Scream franchise has been reduced to a low whimper. ■To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1444f

It’s All About the Music 28 APRIL 21, 2011

Timber! “When I see birches bend to left and right / Across the lines of straighter darker trees, / I like to think some boy’s been swinging them. / But swinging doesn’t bend them down to stay. / Ice-storms do that‌ / They are dragged to the withered bracken by the load, /And they seem not to break; though once they are bowed / So low for long, they never right themselves‌â€? – “Birches,â€? Robert Frost

S

ince I was little, I’ve loved big storms. The palpable charge in the air. The slow, gray crescendo to climax. Riotous rain bleeding from indigo skies, until the world again fades to quiet black. When childhood afforded the luxury of time, I would sit and revel in the wild weather. Almost always, I found my attentions turned from Kula toward Olinda—where off the lips of the Northern Star, the wind would whip unencumbered along the pastureland. Until, that is, it met the pair of Norfolk Island pines in my family’s yard. There, the tempest would wrestle the ballet-backs of these 50-foot conifers into scoliosis spines. Bending beyond comprehension, the trees’ very rings would screech against each other with warriors’ wail. But righting themselves storm after storm, decade after decade, the pines prevailed. And I watched it all like a bloodthirsty patron of a celestial Colosseum, stretched out on the couch with my cassette-playing Walkman, listening to The Beatles’ White Album and Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons (occasionally pausing to scribble embarrassing blather in my journal, pontiďŹ cating about everything I did not really know—and still don’t—about life and death, decomposition and growth.) Through the battle, though I rooted for the trees, I mostly envisioned their defeat—the wind’s a worthy opponent, after all. In one imagined instance, they’d come crashing through the windows and smash me so completely, my esh and their bark would be indistinguishable. In another, I’d be safe but by a narrow miss. My mind played through these scenarios—and a million gory more— over and over again. Fast forward to today. Whereas when I was little the threat was only pretend, now the Norfolk pines’

weary limbs pose a real danger to the family house. So the trees had to be chopped down. Since I don’t much believe in the whole self-fulďŹ lling prophecy thing, I’m not quite sure why I feel so guilty. Still, I can’t shake some small, stormy superstition that I am partly to blame. Funny, though—despite having visualized the scenario over and over again, when the ďŹ rst tree actually fell I couldn’t help but scream. And I screamed like little girl. Because the pines’ death was nothing like I thought it’d be. It was not swathed in the wrath of Mother Nature, but in a haze of chainsaw dust in the afternoon heat. The last bits of trunk snapped like a sickly bent bone, and stories upon stories came rushing toward us. It struck the earth with the sound of a quarry blast, and the permanence of its death was felt. When the dust settled, I ran along the trunks to feel their scope. They were even bigger than I realized. Quick as it was cut, sap welled into the trees’ mortal wounds. I stood stunned, staring at the stumps and vowing these would be the ďŹ rst and last trees I had a hand in killing— safety hazard or no. And I thought of planting trees. And when I think of planting trees, I can’t help but think of Plant A Wish’s Sara Tekula and Joe Imhoff, who are completing their second and penultimate leg of a 50-state tour, carefully planting native trees across the country. I get links to their blog on Twitter (@plantawish; plantawish.org), and their springy updates have done much to lift my toppled spirits: A tulip poplar planted along the Sunower River in Mississippi, and one in Nashville, Tennessee. A cypress in Arkansas. A moon sycamore in D.C‌. Though sad, I’m inspired—and this Earth Day my gardening gloves are at the ready. I’ll ďŹ nd sturdy soil for seeds and saplings, in memory of my old friends, my helter skelter giving trees, my underdog champs in the windswept ring. It’ll be beyond my lifetime before some other little girl can brood beneath them—but if I do it right, with any luck she can keep them. â–

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions on page 7

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Americans don’t have a monopoly on body fascism, but we’re certainly contenders for first place. Goodness forbid you have hair in the wrong place (or too little in the right place), or smell like a human being instead of a flower, or have any other physical “imperfection.” While having standards of beauty is inevitable, yours could do with being a bit wider and less rigidly enforced. Being down to earth means embracing all that rough-edged earthly stuff, and hopefully seeing the sexy beauty in it. This week, instead of stocking up on the newest antiperspirant, try that. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) There’s a difference between those who don’t cheat because they worry about getting caught, and those who don’t do it because they know it’s wrong and wouldn’t make them feel good. Eventually, the former will get around to it no matter what. Determining what kind of person you’re dealing with is of paramount importance this week. Becoming paranoid, nosy, and controlling isn’t a fate I’d wish on you, so if you suspect you’ve fallen in with one of those would-be cheaters just waiting for an opportunity, you might want to get out now while you still can. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Embracing and experiencing your emotions is one thing; allowing them to completely dominate and overwhelm you, and hold you back from the things you want—that’s quite another. It’s tricky for you Cancers, because you feel things so vividly and powerfully, and you don’t want to deny or shut down that potent source of strength and vitality. However, learning how to rein those feelings in without shutting down is a valuable and necessary tool if you ever want to achieve lasting contentment and success. That, my dear, is this week’s (and your life’s ongoing) lesson. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) By this time, you should have figured out that walking any path forged by someone else will only work for you for a short time. Ultimately, the only way to get to where you’re going, and be happy about it, is to blaze your own trail. You can be inspired by someone else, or even copy aspects of what they’ve been up to—but in the end, you need to make your own rules, schedule, and route. If you’re walking in someone else’s footprints, it’s now time to consider when to break off and head in your own direction—probably soon. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) How much power you’re willing to lend to someone else says a lot about you and where you’re at in life. Some people can’t help but render themselves virtually helpless in certain situations (especially romantic ones); others have trouble giving up any control whatsoever. Most of us fall somewhere in the middle. There’s no recipe for what amount of power to hold onto or let go of, but there is a “right” amount—it’s just that it’s different for every specific situation. Hold on too tight and you’ll strangle all life out of it; give up too much and it’ll never go where you’re hoping. This week, do your best to figure it out; if you screw it up, chalk it up to a lesson that’ll help you do better next time. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Severe disappointment is difficult to get over—but try to remember that everyone experiences it at some points in their lives, and most of us many, many times. You don’t have a monopoly on feeling let down, nor is shutting down and giving up completely a viable response to what you’re feeling now, even if it’s what you’re intensely tempted to do. Au contraire! The quicker you can get back to blank slate status—that is, truly open about the next promising possibility (without secretly believing it’ll turn out just like this one)—the better. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Sometimes there’s just so much on your plate that you want to retreat from the world, get stoned/drunk/etc., and try to forget about it all. Sometimes you do just that, but

you know by now that it’s a slippery slope. The longer you put off this stuff, the more it piles up, and the worse the temptation becomes to be irresponsible and numb your mind to it all. Don’t be too hard on yourself, however. I suggest giving yourself permission to retreat—after you’ve done just one (or two) things. Even if they’re small things, facing this stuff tomorrow will be that much easier if you just suck it up and get them done today, right now.

1. Online (via the 3D virtual world “Second Life”) 2. Spay and neuter them 3. C.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC.21) Don’t be blinded by the beauty of the swan. The swan is mean, and only has eyes for other swans, anyway. Admire it from afar, but don’t bother trying to get close to it. Spend your time and energy, instead, focusing on learning to notice and appreciate beauty that comes in less obvious, but more sustainable, forms. This is your path to happiness. Naturally, there’ll be many factors and influences trying to steer you from it, but if you can train your mind and heart towards ideas and patterns that’ll make you happier and more fulfilled than you’ve ever been—why the hell wouldn’t you? CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Repeating the same action and expecting different results is one definition of insanity. Of course, it’s easy enough to realize that’s what you’re doing and switch things up when solving a scientific problem, but it’s quite another when dealing with emotions, which are by definition irrational and nearly impossible to control. These are the sources of patterns we get stuck in. Sometimes you simply have to rope yourself, through brute logical force, into taking a different path. That may very well be the case this week, when your feelings are likely to take you down the same route you’ve taken so many times before. If you want a different outcome, though, you’ll need to head in a different direction—so do that, by hook or by crook. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) How comfortable are you with darkness? I’m not just talking about your bedroom once the lights are out—I mean the darker aspects of your own nature. How about those facets of someone else? Sometimes, true love and intimacy means embracing and accepting those as well as all the brilliant and joyful things that made you fall for them in the first place. This week may very well present a test of your devotion. Will you brave those dark places, or run screaming? Sticking it out can only increase the sum total of trust here—so if you can manage it, it’s worth your while. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Being flexible is one thing, but sometimes you bend over backwards so far you might as well be lying on your back, counting the footprints on your chest. As long as you keep accommodating other people’s demands, they will certainly keep making them. There’s no magical line they’ll cross and suddenly realize they’re asking too much—unless you draw one. This week, you need to do exactly that. Naturally, saying it’s there won’t quite do the trick. The first thing all those chest-walkers will do is experiment by stepping right over it. What you do next will determine whether you get to continue your interactions as their equal, or their doormat. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) The story’s never done being written, even if it feels that way. Even death or distance doesn’t stop the tale. The only thing that can end it is you, by refusing to add to it in any way. You may think you know the conclusion to this one, but sometimes the best stories have surprise twists at the end. Be open to one of those here—and if it’s in your direct power to make one happen, I can’t encourage you enough to do so. It could spell the difference between a happy ending and a potentially tragic one.
