While the deal to open the Paia bypass won’t end the complaining or the gridlock, it’ll help. Narcotics Enforcement Division placed “heavy-handed and prohibitive requirements on physicians who prescribe medical cannabis, including banning house calls and forcing doctors to “register all locations where they meet with patients to discuss medical marijuana (with other prescription narcotics, ACLU says, only the facility where the drugs are stored has to be registered). ACLU says DPS ignored repeated inquiries but that after reaching out to the state Attorney General “to avoid litigation, they were assured the policies would be changed. “Hawaii’s medical cannabis law was established to help doctors alleviate the suffering of very ill and dying patients, said ACLU attorney Daniel Gluck in a release. “In implementing this law, the legislature chose to allow DPS to oversee the program, which has led to 11 years of administrators applying a criminal control model to a public health issue. That about sums it up—and

Alexander & Baldwin that will keep the Paia “mini-bypass open 24 hours a day, seven days a week likely won’t end the complaining or the gridlock, it’ll help. “The people of Paia, Haiku and other East Maui communities have suffered enough, said Mayor Alan Arakawa in a statement released ahead of the May 11 opening. “Traffic heading into Paia Town is backed

I want people to know that we have heard their cries for help. The bypass—which was built five years ago on land owned by A&B—was previously open only from 1-6:30pm. The deal to open it full-time required the County to assume liability, which led to delays but ultimately didn’t derail the effort.

Lights, Camera... Inaction! Sorry, Cuba Gooding Jr.—you gave it your best shot. The Oscar-winning actor was among those who testified in favor of a bill that would have set up permanent production studios on Oahu and Maui and offered tax breaks to ďŹ lmmakers who shoot on-location in Hawaii. The idea was to juice the economy, but lawmakers heard “tax breaks,â€? stared at the deep, red hole that is the state deficit and yelled, “cut!â€? The argument, apparently, is that Hawaii is alluring enough to draw Hollywood dollars regardless. And there’s some evidence for that—TV shows like Lost and Hawaii Five-O and major movies like the forthcoming Pirates of the Caribbean sequel have all come, bringing beaucoup bucks with them. But it’s also not uncommon for studios to look elsewhere. Even some movies set in Hawaii aren’t actually shot here, like the 2009 thriller A Perfect Getaway, which was supposed to take place on Kauai but was actually filmed largely in Puerto Rico—a country that, not coincidentally, offers major tax incentives. Then again, if the “Show Me the Money Guyâ€? wasn’t persuasive enough, it was probably a lost cause. â– To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1447c

EH BRAH!

NEWS OF THE WEIRD BLOWING SMOKE The cure for emphysema is cigarette smoke piped directly into the lungs, according to chemist Gretha Zahar, whose clinic has treated 60,000 people in Jakarta, Indonesia, in the past decade. Zahar (with a Ph.D. from Padjadjaran University in West Java) modifies the tobacco smoke with “nanotechnology” to remove “free radicals” and adjust the mercury levels—and touts her “divine cigarettes” as cures for “all” diseases, including cancer, with only a wink of the eye from the government (which opposition leaders say is in the pocket of Indonesia’s tobacco industry). Though 400,000 Indonesians die yearly from smoking-related causes, nicotine “addiction” was only reluctantly and subtly mentioned in recent regulations. One pharmacology professor said he had never heard of anyone dying of smoking, which he called a “good, cheap alternative” to expensive drugs.

PEDOPHILES CAN’T CATCH A BREAK Thomas Cavender, 60, of Bessemer City, North Carolina, pleaded unsuccessfully with a judge in March to remove him from the National Sex Offender Registry, to which he had been assigned as part of his sentence in 2000 for molesting a thirdgrade girl. Cavender told the judge that he had become a preacher and evangelist and that it “hurts my ministry when you’re in the pulpit, and someone goes to the

computer, and there you are.”

DOO WRONG In April, two police constables in North London, England, threatened Louise Willows with arrest for criminal damage and forced her to clean her artwork from a city sidewalk. Willows had cleared off 25 deposits of droppings that dog-walkers had failed to remove and in their place drawn pink cupcakes in chalk with a nearby message, “Dog owners, Please clear up your dog’s mess. Children walk here.”

REDNECK CHRONICLES Jonathan Avery, 31, was arrested in Benson, North Carolina, in February for hitting his son, 6, on the head with a spoon, drawing blood with a cut that became infected. Hospital personnel treating the child called police, as Avery had apparently attempted to suture the wound with fishing line.

WHAT THE SMELL? Nursery school teacher Elizabeth Davies, 48, was fired in February from Hafod Primary School in Swansea, Wales, after accusations that she had sprayed pinescented room-freshener on kids who passed gas and on Bangladeshis who had come to class reeking of curry and onions. Of the latter, she reportedly said, “There is a waft coming in from paradise.” ■

Eh snooty tourist couple at the resort buffet: Yeah, my keiki were making a little noise—they were enjoying their waffles. That doesn’t give you the right to make loud, disparaging comments and complain to the staff. We weren’t hurting anyone and were just enjoying a little luxury for my wife’s birthday. I’m sure you’re used to all the brown people bowing down and serving you whenever you jet off to a tropical island with your bailout money (you don’t think I know what AIG is, brah?). You’re lucky I didn’t shove that omelette in your eye—or somewhere else. Send anonymous thanks, confessions or accusations, 200 words or less (which we reserve the right to edit), changing or deleting the names of the guilty and innocent, to “Eh Brah!” c/o MauiTime, 33 N. Best Of Maui Awards Ballot It’s that time again

A FEW NOTES ABOUT BALLOT STUFFING:

Time to cast your votes for our annual BEST OF MAUI. Usually, this ballot is decked out with whatever theme we’ve chosen. But this year, we’ve come up with another theme so cool, we want to keep it under wraps. Seriously, you’re gonna really dig it. As usual, categories are organized into five sections: arts & entertainment; food & drink; goods & services; politics & environment; and sports & leisure. We’ve added some new categories this year to spice things up, but you’ll still find all the old standbys. Please VOTE IN AT LEAST 40 CATEGORIES if you want your ballot to be counted. Voting ends May 19.

While most people play it straight, every year a few nefarious folks attempt to stuff the ballot box. To cut down on this, and to ensure the results are fair and accurate, here are a few rules:

★ ONLY ONE (1) BALLOT PER PERSON ★ ALL BALLOTS MUST BE SIGNED ★ NO PHOTOCOPIED BALLOTS WILL BE ACCEPTED

★ MULTIPLE BALLOTS IN THE SAME

THIS LAST WEEK

IS YOUR TO VOTE!

HANDWRITING WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

★ BALLOTS MUST BE MAILED IN; NO MORE THAN THREE (3) BALLOTS PER ENVELOPE. ENVELOPES MUST HAVE A RETURN ADDRESS

★ EACH ONLINE BALLOT MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A VALID E-MAIL ADDRESS Any ballots that violate these rules—or that sufficiently rouse our suspicion— will not be tallied. We hope it isn’t necessary, but if anyone does attempt to unfairly sway the outcome, we reserve the right to create a Best Ballot Stuffer category. This is not something you want to win—trust us.

You may also notice these convenient little QR codes throughout the ballot that you can scan with your smart phone at any time to take you to our online ballot. llot..

YOU MUST FILL OUT 40 CATEGORIES FOR YOUR VOTE TO COUNT! NOTE: In categories with the LOCAL stamp, only votes for locally owned businesses will be counted; no corporate chains.

o you like lager or ale, porter or stout? Would you rather drink craft over import? Well, if you’ve got a choice, drink craft ... beer, that is! Join us at the Maui Brewers Festival on Saturday, May 14 to learn about the great wave surging across America: craft beer. Maui Arts & Cultural Center

welcomes 28 breweries from Hawai‘i, California, the Pacific Northwest and beyond to share their beer artistry and industry knowledge with our community and supporters. The Maui Brewers Festival offers a good opportunity to try beers that can’t be found in Hawai‘i and sample new products from familiar breweries. In between sips of suds, be sure to get your fill of ‘ono appetizers and delightful desserts fresh from the kitchens of 18 Maui restaurants and caterers,

MAUI BREWERS FESTIVAL 2011

including our neighborhood Maui Culinary Academy. Maui Brewing Co. root beer and Menehune Water are also available. If you’re a designated driver, feel free to partake of as much grinds and soft drinks as you can handle. Maui Arts & Cultural Center developed the Maui Brewers Festival to introduce The Center to new audiences and to help raise funds for our many educational and cultural arts programs. Net proceeds from this event will benefit Maui’s students, seniors and the entire

community - your gift of attending the festival will keep on giving. We invite you to enjoy our beautiful new Yokouchi Pavilion and A&B Amphitheater setting, eat plenty, imbibe and learn something that you can share. Please say “mahalo” to our generous sponsors: Maui Brewing Co., Hawai‘i Nui Brewing, Maui Time, Pacific Radio Group, Crazy Shirts and many local business supporters. Remember ... 21 years & over only. “Life’s too short to drink cheap beer!”

Maui native, Anuhea is a selftaught guitarist and songwriter whose talents surfaced while boarding at Kamehameha Schools on O‘ahu. After attending film school in California, Anuhea realized music was her true calling. She returned to the islands and began performing at local coffee shops and clubs. Taking the initiative to market herself as well as acting as her own manager, booking agent, music producer and distributor, Anuhea’s skills improved with every gig and the ball of success started rolling. From a live taping, she created a 22-track demo CD, Rough Cuts, which she sold at gigs in Hawai‘i and through her MySpace page to fans across the globe. Since the release of her self-titled debut album, Anuhea has sold tens of thousands of songs across the United States. A hit single, “Right Love, Wrong Time” is available on iTunes and she’s poised to begin a Summer of Love tour on the Mainland. She is arguably the most visible and commercially successful artist to emerge from Hawai‘i in a generation. Her ultimate validation came from music peers at the 2010 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards when Anuhea won awards for Most Promising Artist of the Year and Contemporary Album of the Year. With a delicate blend of fragility, strength and sass, Anuhea uses engaging lyrics with her acoustic soul-pop music. Her signature guitar rhythms and sultry vocals weave R&B, soul, reggae and jazz into a seductive

pop sound with an independent attitude à la Gwen Stefani. Anuhea strives to be a part of a new generation of songwriters, melding the melodic traditions of her island upbringing with modern beats and influences. We warmly welcome her back to Maui for a one-show only performance.

KANEKOA

T

his six-piece jam band is a high energy, ‘ukulele-powered experience of sound and island culture from Maui’s northshore. Playing together since 1999, Kanekoa melds elements of Hawaiian, rock, roots reggae, folk, blues and improvisation into a truly one-of-akind sound. Lead singer, principal lyricist and rhythm ‘ukulele player, Kaulana Kanekoa, provides the band’s thoughtprovoking melodies and lyrics, drawn from the Hawai‘i of old, influenced by the diversity of the larger world and confronting the struggles of today. On lead ‘ukulele and backing vocals is Vince Esquire, considered by many to be one of the next generation’s masters of the instrument. As an accomplished blues and soul guitarist, Vince has shared the stage with the likes of Willie Nelson, Greg Allman, Mick Fleetwood, Willie K and Los Lonely Boys, but on ‘ukulele he’s in a class all his own. On fretless bass guitar at the crossroads of rhythm and harmony is Shawn Michael. A wizard at shaping low end roots grooves, thunderous rock backbones and subtle harmonics, Shawn is a key ingredient in Kanekoa’s ability to

span musical genres. For its rhythmic foundations, Kanekoa features a drums and percussion section with the talents of Brett Kealoha Nelson (percussion/sounds), Clive Tucker (drum kit) and Travis Rice (drum kit/ percussion). Because of the range of its drummers, Kanekoa’s rhythm can morph seamlessly from a rock and jam groove, across roots reggae and ow into Hawaiian, folk and blues vibes. Get ready to rock!

LECHE DE TIGRE

L

eche De Tigre is an eightpiece Latin Gypsy Funk band formed in Kona in 2009. Playing original music based on rhythms and avors from around the world, Leche de Tigre blends a unique mixture of acoustic guitars, bass, drums, cello, percussion and vocals into smoking hot dance music. The band’s sound, often laced with rock inuences, relies on the percussive and melodic impact of acoustic guitars to engage the audience, bringing with it a wide appeal. This year, Leche de Tigre released their debut record, Lactophilia. A wide range of musical styles is woven into the record, using Latin/Caribbean rhythms, Gypsy/Eastern European inuences, tango, funk/rock, French ballad and Brazilian bossa nova, which

all lend great color to their songs. The band members continue to hone their rockin’ Latin Gypsy sound, playing shows regularly at restaurants, clubs and private events as well as festival and outdoor concert venues. They’re performing for the ďŹ rst time on Maui ... get up and dance!

I

remember my preschool teacher chuckling as I made my first gyotaku print, carefully salving tempera paint around the fish’s eyeball. “But if I paint over it, how will it see when we set it free?” Turned out, the fish was dead. Which meant I didn’t have to be careful at all and could, in fact, poke its eyeball—which I did (of course). No Maui keiki should be without their own gyotaku-making memory, and they’ll soon have their chance at Saturday’s

11th annual Maui Matsuri, the Valley Isle’s premier Japanese cultural festival (May 14, 2-9pm). The event boasts everything from obon dancing to taiko drumming to samurai sword fighting to a tea ceremony demonstration to a natto eating contest (i.e. a fermented soybean dish—full of probiotics—that might smell like Hell on Earth, but tastes good if you know what’s good for you) and much more. And if your kid has a fish eye for hands-on activities, the Kodomo Corner offers other craft projects like kokeshi bookmarks, kendama toys and Kikaida masks. Ooh, ooh! Speaking of Kikaida—the

O.G. tokusatsu TV series, popular since the early ’70s—the superhero himself will be making action-packed appearances at 3:30 and 5:30pm. [Free admission; University of Hawaii Maui College, 310 W. Kaahumanu Ave., Kahului; 283-9999;mauimatsuri.com] … Also on Saturday, the Maui Historical Society presents the second annual Celebration of Quilts at the Bailey House Museum (10am-3pm). The museum’s garden grounds will bloom with a colorful assembly piecing of local quilters demonstrating their craft, plus a display of antique quilts from the society and private collections. Their sophisticated sound is like the (less acidic side of) jazz by Sun Ra made in a sundrop-drenched Shangri La—and is not to be missed. QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions on page 7

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Unspoken “contracts” happen all the time—but the person you’re dealing with isn’t likely to respond well to any implicit obligations they may be signing up for without knowing it. Therefore, be upfront about your expectations right from the get-go. It’s okay to have “strings attached” when you offer something of yourself—most interactions are, essentially, an exchange. Just be honest and forthright about what those are—and flexible about what they might be. There should be room for negotiation here, otherwise what you’re offering is more of an ultimatum than a deal. How do you think that will go over? GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) I know you’re not always in the mood to deal with a highmaintenance friend, but part of being a friend is being there for someone when they need you. That doesn’t mean you can’t have and enforce boundaries—you should! However, if those boundaries mean that you’ll never really come through for your admittedly needy buddy, then you’re not really being much of a friend, are you? If that’s the case, do both of you a favor and just cut your “friend” loose. However, I hope you can see the benefit in being there once in a while; generally, this kind of effort will come back to you in abundance. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Getting worked up over details is something you’ll probably regret. You’ll be embarrassed you made such a fuss over something so nitpicky. And yet, it happens. This week is about not sweating the small stuff. Easier said than done, I know. In the past this has definitely been a stumbling block for you, and even getting embarrassed about some of it hasn’t been enough to keep you from going there again. You’ll get it, though. You just need a lot of practice learning how to let this shit just roll off your back. This week, fortunately or unfortunately, you’ll get it. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Here’s a funny thing about Leos: You sometimes do stuff specifically to get attention, but then become annoyed or resentful when you get it, because it came at the “wrong” time, or from the “wrong” people. Unfortunately, if you do something attention-getting, you’re not likely to be able to control who notices, or when. Get over your silly expectations and try to be grateful for your “fans,” even when they don’t conform to what you hoped for. They’re still far preferable to the alternative: no one caring enough about what you do to even notice. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) People cross lines all the time—but in their defense, they often don’t know it. You may need to be clearer and more vocal about what’s taboo territory for you, or you’re going to find people wandering around there with more frequency than you’d like. This week, you’ll get plenty of chances to enforce those boundaries, because people will unwittingly be stepping across them quite often. Practice letting those intruders know what’s up with as much humor, lightheartedness, and compassion as you can—you’ll find that those qualities are much more effective than anger, scolding, or earnest entreaties. Remember, their “intrusions” are mostly innocent mistakes. Treat them as such. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Honesty is always best when it comes to your most meaningful relationships, but that doesn’t mean you need to disclose every little detail of everything that’s ever happened to you. You’re allowed to keep a few things private—but don’t lie about them. Lies and deception will come back to haunt you very quickly right now. This is, admittedly, a thorny gray area with shifting boundaries. Sometimes, failure to reveal important information is tantamount to a lie. But other times, disclosing it would just be unproductive over-sharing. Determining which is which is this week’s tricky task. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) You rightly sense that someone is horning in on your territory,

but going right into full-on attack mode will just alienate all the wrong people, and actually allow your adversary to get into a much better position to seize some lost ground. Instead, you need to exercise a powerful Scorpionic quality: lie in wait. It may be galling to just sit tight while they try to finesse the situation, but that’s quite simply your best strategy right now, if you want to keep your potential allies on your side. Don’t worry, you’ll get the chance to use that infamous Scorpio stinger of yours—what’s ironic is that by that time, it may no longer be necessary.

1. Psychiatrists, for the annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association 2. “Krotite,” a new mineral discovered in a meteorite 3. Macaw parrot (macaw: 375 pounds per square-inch; American Pit Bull Terrier: 320 pounds per square-inch)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC.21) The people who can hurt you the most are almost always those closest to you. That means sometimes you need to be a little more selective when deciding who you’ll let get that close. One of your best qualities is your open friendliness and willingness to connect to people from all walks of life. I hope you never lose that. But at some point someone needs to prove they’re worthy of your trust before you let them have an all-access pass. This doesn’t mean people need to pass some lameass test; just that you need to hone your instincts and get better at determining who’s trustworthy, who isn’t, and who’s quite simply worth the risk either way. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You’ve heard the expression, “give them an inch, they’ll take a mile.” When you do it, I’m sure you just think of it as pressing your advantage. It might be a sound strategy in business, but in personal relationships when you push people too far, they walk away. This week, practice taking what’s offered, with gratitude, and simply being happy with that instead of pushing for more (and more). Sure, if you pushed, you might get what you want, but in this case, what you get will be exponentially more sweet if you’re patient enough to wait until it’s freely offered. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) When given any kind of power, the temptation to look after your own interests, regardless of the expense to others, can be a great one. However, I hope you resist it. While whatever you’re contemplating isn’t really a big deal, in the grand scheme of things, it’s perched on the top of a very steep, very slippery slope of less-than-ethical choices. Say no to this one. Look at the big picture and be as objective as possible here. Enlist an outside perspective if necessary. Then stick to simply doing the right thing—it’s hard to go wrong there. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) It can be annoying when people totally misinterpret things about who you are, your relationships, or your situation. But it can be quite funny, too—if you’re not too busy getting steamed up about it. Their assumptions make them look like asses, of course, but you don’t have to join their club. Try to resist getting aggravated or upset. That’s not likely to help the situation or reflect well on you. A snarky response to their mistake would certainly get your point across, but so would gently having fun with it. Laughing off their error would also generate more happiness all around—most importantly, for you. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Sometimes you feel something so strongly that you go a bit overboard in communicating it. I love your enthusiasm, but it can come off as too eager, or even clingy, when you’re so persistent. Trust that you’ve driven the point home already—you probably have, several times—and aim for subtlety for the rest of the week. It’d be better that someone miss something because you were simply too low-key in expressing it than annoying them because you’re repeatedly harping on it. I wouldn’t worry too much about people missing the point, though—your “subtle” is most other people’s “normal.”
