Unplugged Last May, then-Gov. Linda Lingle signed a memorandum of understanding with South Korean automaker CT&T, which pledged to build 10,000 electric vehicles in Hawaii. If that sounds too good to be true, well, it was. This week, the news broke that CT&T’s plans have officially stalled. A rep for CT&T, which made similar promises to South Carolina and Pennsylvania, insisted in an AP dispatch that the ambitious plans “aren’t dead,” though as of this writing even the company’s Web site was unfinished. According to KRX, the Korean stock exchange, CT&T’s stock has fallen almost 90 percent in the last year—or about 10 percent less than the hope of this deal ever

Solemnity? Or some awkward combination of the two? Most outlets opted for the latter, including KHON, which quoted a woman who said she was “proud” the crew got “to be part of such an incredible piece of history” and a crewmember who said the mission was conducted “in a manner that I think brings pride and credit to the United States.” The morality—and legality—of bin Laden’s assassination aside, there’s something undeniably morbid about celebrating a corpse getting dumped in the ocean. But then, these are morbid times.

EH BRAH!

NEWS OF THE WEIRD FROM THE MOUTHS OF BABES

COCKROACHES WITH A BLOWTORCH?

In Chinese legend, tea leaves picked by the mouths of fairies yielded brewed tea that would bring prosperity and cure diseases. Now, the historic, picturesque Jiuhua Mountain Tea Plantation (in Gushi, Henan province) has promised to hire up to 10 female virgins to provide the equivalently pure and delicate tea leaves, picked with the teeth and dropped into small baskets worn around the women’s necks. According to an April report in London’s Daily Mail, only virgins with strong necks and lips, a bra size of C-cup or larger and no visible scars or blemishes will be considered for the equivalent-$80-a-day jobs (an almost unheard-of salary in China, especially for agricultural field work).

Reports still frequently emerge of homeowners battling household pests, yet only creating an even worse problem (as if the pests ultimately outsmart them). In recent cases, for example, Robert Hughes tried to oust the squirrels from his townhome in Richton Park, Illinois, in March, but his smoke bomb badly damaged his unit and his neighbor’s. (Firefighters had to rip open the roof in the two units to battle the blaze.) Two weeks after that, in Mesa, Arizona, a man set his attic on fire trying to get rid of a beehive with brake fluid and a cigarette lighter.

WORST IMPRESSIONS News of the Weird has reported several times on the confusion many art gallery visitors reveal in evaluating “abstract impressionist” pieces when they compare them to random scribblings of toddlers (and animals, such as chimpanzees and elephants). In April, academic researchers at Boston College reported that gallery patrons correctly differentiated serious works from squiggles only about 60 percent to 70 percent of the time. Commented one survey subject, apparently realizing his confusion: “The chimpanzee’s stuff is good. I like how he plays with metaphors about depth of field, but I think I like this guy [Mark] Rothko a little bit better.”

YOU MEAN WE SHOULDN’T KILL

TROUSER SNAKE, MEET ACTUAL SNAKE In March, Dennis Mulholland, 67, of Paisley, Scotland, encountered a 3-foot-long California king snake hiding in the bowl of his toilet. (The creature had apparently escaped from elsewhere in the building.)

CAVITY DEFYING “Personal body orifices,” as storage units for contraband, seem more than ever in vogue. Recent inventories made by U.S. police of suspects’ vaginas included: LSD in aluminum foil; marijuana in two sandwich bags; a fraudulent driver’s license and credit card; and pills and a knife. Rectal safe-keeping included: a man with a baggie of marijuana; a man with a marijuana pipe; and a man with 30 items inside a condom, including a syringe, lip balm, six matches, a cigarette, 17 pills and a CVS receipt and coupon. ■

Let me get this straight: First you follow me around the party all night demanding I arm wrestle you. I refuse, repeatedly, before finally agreeing, mostly to shut you up. Then you say you want to put 20 bucks on it. I ask if you’re sure, you say yes, and so we go for it. I win, convincingly, but I don’t gloat or try to embarrass you in front of that girl (who, by the way, was definitely not planning to sleep with you, regardless of the outcome). And you stiff me. Just flat out refuse to pay. I could have beaten it out of you, but I’m not the type. Honestly, though, I could’ve used the cash for gas to get home. Next time, keep your gun in the holster, tough guy. MAUI FILM FESTIVAL THE MOVIES, THE FOOD, THE HONOREES AND MORE...

“It really marches to the beat of the festival’s drum,” says Maui Film Festival founder Barry Rivers of this year’s cinematic crop, “meaning it’s about compassionate vision and life-affirming storytelling.” If that sounds high-minded, well, it is. Like previous incarnations, the 2011 festival is chock-full of quirky, heartfelt indie flicks, message-heavy documentaries and boundary-pushing shorts. If you want turgid blockbusters and formulaic rom coms, there’s always the corporate multiplex down the street. If, on the other hand, you want to be challenged—and rewarded—here’s your chance.

8

JUNE 9, 2011

“We had a great turnout last year, and we’re hopeful people will keep coming out to support what we’re doing,” says Rivers. “This is something unique and special for Maui, and something that we want to keep building.”

The 2011 Maui Film Festival runs June 15-19 in Wailea and Kahului. For tickets and more information, call 579-9244 or visit mauifilmfestival.com

It’s no secret that Maui is one of the most popular wedding destinations in the world. The reasons—beautiful beaches, perfect weather, great food, amazing sunsets, laid-back people— are obvious. But there’s plenty about the Valley Isle’s wedding industry many people probably don’t know, and that’s where we come in, with a guide to everything from photographers to caterers to the best spot to hold your champagne toast, plus some outside-the-box, only-on-Maui ideas (underwater wedding anyone?). Makena Get A Witness

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

Annual skimboard competition offers good fun for an even better cause Fourth Annual Save Makena Skim Board Contest Saturday (June 11), 8am, Oneloa (Big Beach) at Makena State Park Free for spectators

T

he state park doesn’t exist in a vacuum,” says Angie Hofmann, Save Makena’s community organizer and Youth Advisory Board member for Maui Tomorrow. “It exists within a whole community of places to live and be and work.”

that there are a lot of issues that surround an area with that kind of rapid growth,” she adds, citing hot button development projects like Wailea 670/Honua‘ula. “I think what really blows people’s minds is when they see how much growth has already occurred and then learn how much

O

n the island / We do it island style / From da mountain to da ocean / From da windward to da leeward side.” — Ka‘au Crater Boys, “Island Style” Like battles, friends and noses, skimboarding is all about picking the right wave. With skimboards in hand—i.e. the surfboard’s stouter, skinnier, skeg-less sister—riders stand on the sand several yards from the shore break and await the perfect moment. Just after the wave breaks, but before it recedes (to maximize their relative speed), skimboarders run toward the surf, thrust their boards onto the wet sand and—with funambulists’ deft—leap-on for a hydroplaning ride into the rest of the oncoming set. Skimboarding’s history can be traced to the 1920s in California (think adventurous—and maybe slightly bored— Laguna Beach lifeguards plus a pile of plywood). As the sport grew in popularity, the technique evolved as well. And those who’ve earned mad skills can then show off their amphibious acrobatics, carving and catching air off the coiling crests. Organizations like the Hawaii Amateur Skimboarding League (HASL) aim to further the sport by encouraging members to make the step to sponsorship and professional competition; and local businesses like Maui Skimmers—a board manufacturer with a quarter-century tenure—not only outfit enthusiasts, but help give the local scene clout. So it makes sense that both the HASL and Maui Skimmers are key sponsors of the Valley Isle’s own competitive installation, the ‘ohana-friendly, all-ages Save Makena Skim Board Contest—which this year marks its fourth installment with the Maui Melee 2011. But as the event’s name implies, the contest is about more than sensational sport (and spectating)—it’s about the environment that inspires it. Makena— namely Oneloa (colloquially, Big Beach), part of the 164.4 acre Makena State Park— is one of our isle’s rarefied jewels, and partnering event presenters Save Makena and Maui Tomorrow aim to keep it that way. “

BLONDIE

Parallel Lines (Chrysalis; 1978).

Hoffman says her passion for the Makena area stems from having grown up in South Maui. And, as an avid skimboarder herself, the event is especially near and dear to her heart. Her holistic idea of Oneloa, too, aligns nicely with the theme of this year’s competition, “Malama Makena from the mountains to the sea.” As described by Project Ka‘eo—a research effort supported by a grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs with matching funds from Maui Tomorrow—archaeological evidence shows that aboriginal Hawaiians lived in and cultivated the area’s natural abundance for more than a millennium, planting staple sweet potato patches in sandy loams and utilizing the abundance of the forests for “materials for housing, tools, medicine and canoe building.” However, Project Ka‘eo reports, despite its scientific significance, knowledge of the area is still severely lacking, with “the majority of archaeological reviews [appearing] hurried, fragmented or unsupported,” as these “studies [have] been conducted to meet permitting requirements for golf course, resort and home construction.” “Over the years, there’s been booming development,” says Hoffman. “It’s quite an interesting community in the sense

more has been approved on the land they call home,” says Hoffman. “[Save Makena’s] basic goal is that we want people to be aware of the issues as well as know how they can get involved to voice their opinion.” At the same time, Hoffman emphasizes, the goal isn’t to stop all development. Rather, she says, “it’s about identifying what it represents, who it represents and what we want future generations to inherit.”

T

hough the deadline for entry into the 4th Annual Save Makena Skim Board Contest has passed, attendance is encouraged (park in the second, southernmost state park parking lot, and walk south). Spectators will enjoy light refreshments courtesy of restaurants like Flatbread Co. and Lulu’s Kihei, and get a chance to learn more about Save Makena and Maui Tomorrow’s initiatives at their informational booths. And who knows? You might be inspired to take up skimboarding yourself. ■

In the late 1970s, Blondie cleaned up the messiness of punk rock, but kept the distorted guitars and explosive drums and leaned heavily on synthesizers to develop what we now call New Wave. Parallel Lines is a prime specimen of the genre and an album that rocketed Blondie out of New York’s underground scene and into mainstream America. “Sunday Girl” is a saccharine-sweet pop tune with handclaps and shimmering guitar reminiscent of The Archie’s “Sugar Sugar.” “Picture This,” with its infectious guitar hook, is a timeless tune with lyrics that tread oft-covered ground: infatuation. “All I want is a photo in my wallet/A small remembrance of something more solid/All I want is a picture of you.” The most obvious homage to the first decade of rock n’ roll is the Buddy Holly’s cover, “I’m Gonna Love You Too.” (Though, unfortunately, the cover pales in comparison to the original.) Things get much more interesting in “Will Anything Happen?”, when Blondie adroitly melds pop with punk edginess. Ironically, “Heart of Glass” bears no trace of Blondie’s punk rock and oldies influence— and became a disco anthem that can still be heard from time to time. In fact, more than three decades later, this entire album still exudes explosive youth. - Ben Lowenthal

Less Than ‘Super’ When does homage become shameless ripoff? J.J. Abrams ďŹ nds out Super 8

★★★★★

Rated PG13/127 min.

Y

oung Joe (played by newcomer Joel Courtney) lost his mother in a tragic accident. His father (Kyle Chandler) is a small town sheriff and strict disciplinarian. Joe’s only escape is making a zombie movie with his cluster of friends, including his dream girl (Elle Fanning). While filming one night in a train yard, they witness a spectacular locomotive crash in which‌something is unleashed. J.J. Abrams directed Super 8, but it has producer Steven Spielberg’s fingerprints all over it. Abrams’s recent Star Trek was a muscular, emotionally charged triumph, and proved he was a director to watch. Super 8 mostly proves that Abrams watched a lot of Spielberg movies growing up. I wanted to love this movie.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s...certain death!

Unfortunately, it feels like a rehash of everything from E.T. to The Goonies to Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Homage is one thing, but Abrams’s screenplay is clumsily cobbled together from better films. The ending is a big disappointment, as the last 30 minutes are clunky, poorly written and oozing with forced sentimentality. The final reel tries hard to

mix teary-eyed moments with flashy f/x, but winds up feeling rushed and sloppy. The studio has kept this the summer’s most top-secret film and I won’t reveal exactly what the “creature on the loose is. The thing from the train is seen only fleetingly for 80 percent of the running time, which makes it scarier. Once everything is in the open, however, I wanted

the creature to go away, so we could get back to the kids. These young actors are great as is the offbeat love story at the heart of the film. There are two truly terrific scenes. One is the train crash, the most intensely exciting of its kind since The Fugitive. The other is a tremendously moving revelation made while Courtney and Fanning (who’s sensational) watch an old movie together. The depiction of small town life in the ’80s feels authentic. Really, Super 8 is at its best without the spectacle— it would have been better off as a comedy. The proof of this is The Case, the cheaply made moviewithin-a-movie that plays over the end credits—it’s funnier and better than the lavish studio film that preceded it. Abrams clearly had fun making this—but is it possible he had too much fun? In the end, the result of all his effort is a selfindulgent bit of nostalgia that leaves the audience with very little. ■To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1451f

On Kapa the World

A Leg Up

Friday, June 10, 5pm, Bailey House Museum, Wailuku, $45/$50

Saturday (June 11), 5-10:30pm, Stella Blues Cafe, Kihei; $15/$20/$25/$30

Hawaiian historian Samuel Kamakau wrote in 1870, that “all are dead who knew how to make the coverings... that made the wearers look dignified and proud and distinguished. But the art of Hawaiian kapa-making (i.e. a painstakingly rendered traditional fabric made from the bast fibers of, often, paper mulberry called wauke) was revived some 100 years later—and in 1987, cultural practitioners Wesley Sen, Hokulani Holt and Pua Van Dorpe held kapa-making workshops at the Bailey House Museum. Returning to the roots of this revitalization—and in honor of Kamehameha Day—Holt and Sen, with the Maui Historical Society and Bailey House Museum, present Hina & Maui: The Story of Hawaiian Tapa Making (Ka Mo’olelo no ke Kapa o Hawai’i Nei) this Friday. Holt has written original hula and cant that tells the legend of Hina and Maui, while Sen has fashioned one-of-a-kind costumes made of traditional kapa for the performers. In addition to the performance, antique kapa from the museum’s collection will be exhibited, plus a presentation on kapa-making by Sen (who will conduct additional workshops earlier Friday and on Saturday). Seating is limited to 100 people, and attendees must be 21 years or older. 244-3326; baileyhousemuseum@clearwire.net; mauimuseum.org

Fact: Superheroes wear silly costumes. Why? Because they’re saving people’s lives, so they get to wear whatever they damned well please. Take the philanthropic fraternity of the Shriners, for example. The Master Masons can wear tasseled Turkish fezzes and tootle about in tiny cars at parades because their network of 22 nonprofit hospitals treat children with orthopaedic conditions regardless of their guardians’ ability to pay. See? Superman stuff. One young Mauian who’s been helped by the Shriners is 13-year-old Ocean Langolis—a sparkling, perceptive-beyond-heryears Upcountry girl. Ocean spent the last two years hospitalized on the Mainland—having undergone six surgeries for her congenital short femur—and has finally returned home this week. To express her gratitude, she’s spearheaded a beneďŹ t to give back to Maui Shriners Transportation and Shriners Hospitals for Children Honolulu this Saturday at Stella Blues, with a “Tropical Twilightâ€? concert featuring Jimmy Mac and the Kool Kats plus Gail Swanson (as well as a bad-ass auction that includes a Stratocaster signed by the likes of Willie Nelson, the Doobie Brothers, Mick Fleetwood and more). Come out to help this super cause—and the super girl behind it. 874-3779; stellablues.com / wickedsistersproduction.com

Republik Your Lips Sunday (June 12), 3pm doors / 4pm show, Yokouchi Pavilion / A&B Amphitheater, Maui Arts & Cultural Center, $39.50/$45

“There’s a feeling comes a-steeling / And it sets my brain a-reeling / When I’m listening to the music of a military band / Any tune like “Yankee Doodle” / Simply sets me off my noodle / It’s that patriotic something that no one can understand.” Those are lesser-known lyrics from “You’re A Grand Old Flag” by George M. Cohan—lyrics that do a brainworm wiggle in my head around patriotic holidays. Speaking of which, United States Flag Day is Tuesday (June 14), and it commemorates the high-flying stars and stripes that’ve had 27 incarnations since 1777, the most recent on July 4, 1960, following Hawaii’s statehood. Though if an alien were to case an 808 neighborhood—and see swathes of Bob Marley flags illuminated in every other window—they might think we represent red, gold and green instead of red, white and blue. A patriotic celebration in its own right, The Republik Music Festival—the state’s largest concert series this summer—is the chance for roots, rock and reggae revelers to wave their colors proudly to music that inspires their zeal for Zion. Featuring five huge headliners, this BAMP Project tour hops from Hawaii Island to Oahu to Maui to Kauai, and is part of the Hard Rock Cafe’s 40th anniversary celebration. Biggest on the bill is Steel Pulse, who made their international debut on a live broadcast the night of Bob Marley’s funeral in 1981. The group saw red in the late ‘70s after being denied concert dates in the Caribbean (curiously, because of their Rastafarian beliefs), so they enlisted with England’s Rock Against Racism campaign with progressive stage acts that included a parody of the Klu Kulx Klan. Also headlining is Hasidic Jewish reggae musician Matisyahu, who many Mauians may have discovered thanks to the Maui Film Festival’s screening of the 2005 documentary Awake Zion, which explores the connections between Judaism and Rastafarianism. Hailing from the Golden State are The Dirty Heads—who visited the Valley Isle last November when opening for Sublime with Rome—and Santa Barbara’s Rebelution. And repping “rootsie roots” from our lovely fleet of islands is none other than The Green. Tickets are available through the MACC’s box office or at Requests, Old Lahaina Book Emporium, Hard Rock Cafe and Green Banana Internet Cafe. 242-SHOW (7469); mauiarts.org / bampproject.com

very local kid ought to have an off-isle stint. As I’m fond of mentioning, my time away was spent in Kansas City, where I’d often patronize downtown’s 150-year-old City Market. Picking from the precipices of great dunes of green peppers—10 for a dollar!—was my favorite bargain-hunting activity. Buying 30 didn’t seem unreasonable, though in hindsight it totally was. Back at home—in our 90-year-old barn-turned-church-turned-house— my boyfriend Bill Murray and I would chop up the peppers into dozens of homemade burritos, wrap them in foil, freeze them and feast for a month. Pleased with our locavore thriftiness, I boasted about the burritos to a close coworker—you know, just something to say to pass the time while folding Tommy Bahama T-shirts. This friend, a former Peace Corps volunteer in Nicaragua, crossed his arms and said to me, “That’s the most American thing I’ve ever heard.” And he said it in a way that made me feel as if I should be ashamed. It hurt a little. But it also made me think. It still makes me think.

I

have a (different) good friend who just traveled to the only postcommunist country ever to return to a monarchical system. Before he left, he told me with yee-haw gusto, “I’m going to shoot a machine gun!” Ratatatatatatata onomatopoeia. “And you know what I wanna do? Blow up a cow. With a bazooka! Just once in my life, I should be able to do that.” This friend is often ironic, but more often earnest. And so I thought, that’s the most American thing I’ve ever heard.

O

n (another) friend’s kitchen counter, there’s a small Ziplock bag of what looks like really expensive dog food. Or carob ball bearings. Or rock tumblerpolished goat poop. The label on the bag instructs the user to crush three of these “pills” into hot water, 30 minutes after meals, thrice daily. “What’s this?” I ask. “Chinese medicine,” he replies. Inappropriately—but irresistibly—I mock kung pow jibber jabber. Despite my efforts, I can’t shake being earnestly un-ironic. My friend explains how he’d recently made an appointment with Dr. Kalsang

KULA KID

Wangyal, a Tibetan monk who trained with the senior physician to the Dalai Lama himself. The 20-minute session cost him 80 bucks, inclusive of a month’s filled prescription. Simulating the way Wangyal had checked his pulse, my friend pinches my forearms, wrists, palms and fingertips. He says the doctor was not a social man, and so did not say much. This friend, being the nice guy that he is, said he wondered why the monk looked so weary. Who knows, really. I open the Ziplock to smell the polished poop. It has the aroma of spicy bark left to pale in the sun. “What’s in it?” “I don’t know. He said I have trouble with my heart, and this is supposed to help.” “You didn’t ask what’s in it?” “No. I just trusted him.” Huh. It surprised me that trusting was so easy for him. So we talked about the idea of faith (I stubbornly have very little, but wouldn’t mind more). He helped me gain a bit more respect for people who are trustworthy enough to trust in others. And I started to think, maybe that’s the most American thing I’ve ever heard. My friend sips his Chinese concoction and makes me a coffee instead. It’s always raining in the Hawaiian jungle at 3am. The peacocks are cawing. I give in to another cigarette. Burritos. Bazookas. Ball bearings. It’s all baleful and beautiful at once. I make a mental note to get my friend a mortar and pestle. And maybe make myself a homemade burrito. ■

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions on page 7 1. The Hartford Colonials of the United Football League

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) If you could potentially stop someone from hurting themselves, you should feel some obligation to try. Of course, there’s only so much you can do—but that’s no excuse to simply do nothing. Take your friend’s keys away when he tries to leave that party drunk. Perhaps the situation you could prevent this week is less obvious than that, but the basic idea is the same. Your hands may be somewhat tied here, but don’t delude yourself into thinking you’re powerless. Speak up, step up—just don’t stand back and watch. Even if you don’t succeed, at least you won’t have to regret not trying.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC.21) Most relationships fail. It’s not you; it’s the nature of the beast. Sure, some people get lucky and score a long-lasting relationship on their first try (but you can bet it’s not as simple and fantastic as it looks from the outside), others require quite a few tries, and some never find it. That’s all okay. So much of love is situation and timing. Try not to let the missed chances and failed romances of your past influence how you feel about yourself today. Not only are you a different person now than you were then, so much of whether or not you succeeded was never up to you, anyway.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) There are a million things we do that tacitly support stuff we don’t approve of. Buying gas, paying taxes, and numerous other purchases probably end up fueling something you’d rather they didn’t. It’s laudable to attempt to minimize that kind of thing by being conscious of where your money goes and what’s done with it, or making efforts to counterbalance it when you can’t (is there a truly ethical company to buy gasoline from, for example?). But at some point you have to let yourself (and the people you know) off the hook—or drive everyone crazy. Those are your options.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Every time my life feels even just a little bit shitty, I force myself to snap out of feeling sorry for myself by choosing to notice all the good things I’ve got going on—being healthy, living in a time when I can eat better than a king could a couple centuries ago (on a shoe-string budget, no less), being able to do lots of stuff that many people in the world will probably never get a chance to, and for just being alive. Get some perspective. Your problems are only a tiny fraction of the big picture, and nowhere near as terrible or insurmountable as you’re making them out to be.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Every time you get burned, extending trust becomes more difficult. But it also becomes more important. Each new person is just as likely (or, yes, unlikely) to deserve your trust as the last, and really shouldn’t be treated as a liar simply because you’ve encountered deceitful people in your past. That’s not to say you should simply blindly trust anyone who comes along. However, being willing to take an educated leap of faith early on will get you burned a few more times, sure—but it will also make you, ultimately, a much happier person.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Worrying about what other people think of you really should have stopped once you graduated high school. But sometimes it’s not as easy as that, especially when those people have some power over you or influence on your life, like employers or in-laws. However, remember the most liberating times in your high school days when you did what felt right no matter what people thought, and to hell with the consequences! Whether or not you ever got to experience that heady freedom then, it’s time to feel it now; just go for it this week.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) This week, let intentions count for more than actions. That’s important because some of those actions are likely to majorly piss you off. However, if you consider the excellent (if misguided, foolish, or clumsy) intentions behind the annoying shit that’s happened, you may find yourself feeling touched or affectionate, despite your irritation. That’d be a good thing, because your poor sweet friend really shouldn’t be punished for simply being bad at doing you a good turn. You don’t need to pretend to be thrilled at how things played out—but you ought to be able to appreciate what they were aiming for, no matter how badly they missed the mark. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Although you try very hard to avoid conflict, sometimes it’s simply inevitable. In those situations, you also try very hard to avoid being “the bad guy.” Unfortunately, you can’t always be the good guy. You screw up too. That’s okay. The important thing is to own and accept it, instead of trying to shift the blame or evade the consequences. Dealing with the fallout of poor choices is easy for, say, an Aries, who generally leaps before she looks, or a Scorpio, who’s drawn to dangerous scenarios, so they’ve had a lot of practice. You haven’t. This week, however, you’re about to get a bit more. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Call the bluff. If someone’s trying to manipulate you into doing something by making threats or over-the-top entreaties, call them on it. You don’t need to be dramatic about it, but you don’t need to cater to their melodrama, either. Try: “I hope you won’t, but do what you’ve got to do.” Then walk away. That might be a little scary, depending on what they’re saying, but it’s nothing compared to where you might end up if you cave in to their emotional bullying. You need to get to a place where they can deal with you in a reasonable manner, not like a spoiled child—and this is one way to get there.

2. Canoodling with pop star Justin Bieber 3. “Intoxication” 4. Sugary beverages

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) You may be the most flexible sign in the zodiac (in more ways than one!), but that doesn’t mean you should let anyone steamroll you. It’s easy to get knocked down by a bull-headed Taurus, or bowled over by a Leo’s incredible enthusiasm, but sometimes you just need to do what you can to stay on your feet and hold your ground. First step is decide to stick to your guns—second step is figuring out, quickly, which direction those guns are pointing. Easier said than done, I know, but it’s good practice for you in general—not all decisions can wait for you to make up your curious but notoriously indecisive mind. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You Rams are usually great at getting what you want, because you’re very clear on just what that is. (Of course, once you get it, you may realize you didn’t actually want it, but that’s another story.) This week, lend your expertise to someone who needs it. I’m not talking about a “how to get what you want” lesson, so much as “how to figure out what you want.” That’s the problem your friend is having. Help them get it sorted. Once they know exactly what they’re looking for, getting it will almost seem like an afterthought. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Taureans are practical hedonists. Generally, you know exactly how to strike the right balance between saving for a rainy day, and simply enjoying the pleasures of today. There are those in your life, however, who are about as far from that wise equilibrium as one can get; some scrimp and save and never indulge themselves, while others live it up today and forget to think about tomorrow. Help these poor souls figure that shit out. The Scrooges need to learn to live, and the party animals must be taught how to plan for the future—and no one is better suited to impart both lessons than you are.
