It is my recommendation that in addition to EVs for individual use, tour buses and mass transit are ideal in that larger vehicles can carry more battery storage and are more efficient in moving people (Mauisphere, Nov. 17, 2011). Delivery vans, mail trucks and all means of conveyance should be explored for electrical conversion.

STILL TALKING ‘BOUT BOYCOTTING THE MAUI INVITATIONAL Noble, albeit idealistic commentary (“Boycott The Maui Invitational! Nov. 10, 2011). Apparently College Football, which does not fund the NCAA annual operating budget, is immune to these claims? Ha! And what percentage of college basketball players do you think move on the pros, and gain big contracts versus, the vast majority who received an education and hopefully will thus enjoy richer and more fulfilling lives, jobs and future contributions to society? I totally disagree with your boycott suggestion; it is childish and would negatively impact Maui and those who need the revenues, which you apparently would rather see go to NYC or similar mainland tournament locations.

THE ALL NEW SCION iQ
Thanks for writing your excellent “Boycott the Maui Invitational article. I was in Maui for a Big Mind training conference and Mike Duberstein gave me a copy of MauiTime and I read your fine piece on my ride home to Washington. Mike was our Research Director at the NFLPA and lives in Kihei. I’ve been in the struggle for athletes’ rights most of my adult life. I’m the author of Out of Their League, and a retired Western Regional Director of the NFL Players Association. A number of years ago I was involved in helping put together the White v. NCAA anti-trust case. It was the first time NCAA revenue athletes sued the NCAA. The issue was over the “cost of attendance agreement the member schools have among themselves, and they have
agreed to not give the COA to “studentathletes. Again thanks for your fine piece and raising the issue.

STILL LEARNING ABOUT SARCASM I am not sure if one should take this article seriously or is this author a master of disguise in his attempt at sarcasm or irony (Coconut Wireless, Nov. 3, 2011). If he is serious what planet did he arrive from? I would guess Planet Hollywood. More McDonalds? “Didn’t we all agree decades ago that we want the same supermarkets and fast food franchises distributed evenly across the island? Frightening consumers with independently owned cafes and coffee houses? Interesting that there are journalists with this perspective actually living here on Maui.
-Haikuperch, via Mauifeed.com
START THIS! I love how these articles always end up in, “what we need is for someone to donate a huge chunk of land for two years and the biggest/best success stories are government-funded projects that only continue because of taxpayer support (“All Hands On Tech, Sept. 15, 2011). True, a start-up can be anywhere, but real innovation comes from being able to work and be inspired with the best minds of your industry, and from being close to your customers also. Having a footprint on the mainland, or a bridge to Silicon Valley would go a long way for a tech start-up in Hawaii. We need access to networking and relationships, where trust is built. Travel remains essential for face-to-face meetings. And I really don’t think an outer island can do it on their own. So rather than be “Maui-focused, pull in strength from tech communities on Kauai and Oahu - where the funding lives. People in Hawaii are more likely to support statewide initiative than just a Maui initiative. And to qualify for funding and support you may want to make it broader as in Australia and the Asia-Pacific.

Talk of the Island
BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO
WHEN PIGS SAIL One of E. B. White’s most moving essays is “Death of a Pig,” which ran in the January 1948 issue of The Atlantic Monthly. The story details White’s attempt to raise a pig for slaughter, only to become despondent when the animal suddenly becomes ill before being properly fattened. White is fully intent on slicing the pig’s throat and turning him into “smoked ham and bacon,” but he also takes pains to ease the animal’s suffering and, indeed, is desperate to keep him alive. I thought of White’s essay as I read through a Nov. 17 press release from Stephanie Feldstein, Change.org’s director of organizing. Her topic? A new petition of 15,000 signatures compiled by Haiku resident and vegan activist Laurelee Blanchard calling on Matson Navigation to stop shipping pigs from the Mainland to Hawaii (a Nov. 18 email from Blanchard raised the figure to 18,000). According to Blanchard, who is quoted at length in the Nov. 17 press release, the trip across the Pacific exposes the animals– hundreds of which arrive in Hawaii every week–to “stress and exhaustion, rough handling, hunger, thirst, extreme temperatures and filthy conditions.” “As someone who provides refuge for rescued pigs at Leilani Farm Sanctuary, I know the intelligence and sensitivity of these animals,” said Blanchard, who launched the Change.org campaign. “Matson is attempting to shift the blame to the consumer, but is indeed directly responsible for causing unconscionable suffering to pigs by continuing to facilitate this cruel trade. These shipments need to stop immediately.” Matson officials didn’t respond to two emailed requests for comment. Feldstein’s email also references a new 55page report from the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA)–written with Blanchard’s assistance–which found the following: “Video footage and still images of this route provided to WSPA (many of which are included in this report) showed the poor treatment of animals. The footage showed pigs standing in their own waste, enduring temper-
ature extremes, going without food or water 2008, the U.S. Department of Agriculture for long periods of time and experiencing poor began investigating the practice in response handling methods. MOLOKAI MAN Saw a name from the past last week in a tiny Pacific Business News blurb. Seems that Peter Nicholas is retiring as executive director of Molokai Properties Ltd (MPL). According to the Nov. 18 PBN blurb, Singapore-based GuocoLeisure Ltd.–the international investment firm that owns MPL–has announced that Clay R. Rumbaoa, a former Castle & Cooke director of engineering and development for Lanai, will be taking over when Nicholas cashes out at the end of the year. Nicholas, if you’ll recall, is something of a notorious figure in Molokai’s recent history. He was running the show back in March 2008 when Molokai Properties, stung by the island’s opposition to its proposed La‘au Point development plans, decided to shut down Molokai Ranch in its entirety. Just like that, the Molokai Lodge, Kaupoa Beach Village, Kaluakoi Golf Course, Maunaloa Gas Station, Maunaloa Tri-Flex Theater and the cattle ranch itself were no more. In an instant, 120 people were out of work–a relatively huge number for the island, which has never really recovered. Indeed, the latest labor stats peg the island's unemployment rate at 17.5 percent in October, four full percentage points higher than the same month last year. “The decision,” Nicholas said in a 2008 statement, “is purely a business one. For the past five years MPL has been working with Molokai community leaders and community members on developing and implementing a Master Plan for MPL’s property and the future of Molokai. Unacceptable delays caused by continued opposition to every aspect of the Master Plan means we are unable to fund continued normal company operations... We deeply regret to have taken this step as the main impact will be on our loyal employees.” But don’t worry about Nicholas. “He will continue to oversee GuocoLeisure’s investment in Fiji,” PBN reported. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type:

LESLIE WILCOX COMES TO TEDXMAUI TEDxMaui is right around the corner and Leslie Wilcox has accepted the invitation to host the January event. Wilcox is a longtime broadcast and print journalist in Hawaii with on-air and management positions in newsrooms in the CBS, NBC and FOX affiliates. She is also PBS Hawaii’s CEO and president, and hosts the weekly PBS Hawaii program Long Story Short. Wilcox will be joined by Maui resident Kainoa Horcajo, a partner in Hana Pono, an organization that provides cultural studies and impact assessments. Horcajo has also worked with Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) and as a media liaison for state Representative Mele Carroll. “When we first announced TEDxMaui, we started receiving numerous applicants from off island residents,” said Katie McMillan, co-producer of TEDxMaui. “It was very clear that many people were looking for an opportunity to come to Maui. Our Program Director, Karen Bouris, had to really reach out into the community and explain what TED was all about. Many people were already fans but many people had never watched a TED talk. Our goal was to create a diverse program that really showcased our local talent and also brought experts from off island that brought relevant and inspired thinking to some of the islands most pressing issues.”
Big tip for mom
Tickets to TEDxMaui are on sale now through the MACC’s box office by calling 808-242-SHOW and through their website www.mauiarts.org. Tuition for the daylong event is $99. Student and senior (over 65) tickets will be $75. An ID will be required for verification. In order to create an intimate setting for more interaction, conversations and connections, TEDxMaui will be limited to 600 participants and 100 spaces reserved for students and elders. Tickets will be available on a first come, first serve basis.
MISSONI COMES TO FOUR SEASONS Fashionistas will soon flock to the Four Seasons Maui for home furnishings and couture threads. Retailer Seaside Luxe operates the 22 Knots Boutique inside the Four Seasons and recently partnered with Missoni to bring its full line of Italian decor and ready-to-wear apparel to Maui and the Big Island at Hualalai. “Missoni is probably one of the hottest designers of our time and his connection with the fashion-forward customer who indulges in a chic resort lifestyle couldn’t be a more perfect fit for Seaside Luxe,” said Lee Ann Sauter, CEO and Founder of Seaside Luxe. “At Seaside Luxe, we aim to provide the most discerning of luxury shoppers that one-of-akind buying experience that allows them to browse and dis-

The TEDxMaui team consists of co-producers McMillan and Sara Tekula, program director Karen Bouris of The Merwin Conservancy and Peter Liu of Kaiscapes Social Media Consulting. In addition, Paul Sutherland, president of FIM Group (located in Kahului) and producer of TEDxTraverseCity, offered his support and experienced staff to the TEDxMaui team. The Utopia Foundation, of which Sutherland is chairman, provided initial funding to support the event, allowing the team to secure the Maui Arts & Cultural Center as its event venue. “I feel this event is an opportunity to bring a new experience to Maui that millions across the globe are already a part of,” said Tekula. “There is nothing more important than–today, more than ever–sharing our best ideas.”
This will be the ninth year that the bartenders at Hula Grill will hui up their tip jar for charity. This year the funds go to 70-year-old Mary Davy of Hilo, who was recently the victim of a violent attack and burglary in her home. “Mary’s daughter, Suzanne, is a good friend of many of our employees and when we found out what had happened to her mother, we really wanted to do everything we could to help,” said Bar Manager Lisa Olmos. “The holidays are all about sharing the aloha spirit and we encourage our guests to join us in our effort to support Ms. Davy.” Davy was asleep when an 18-year-old suspect entered her house, brutally attacking her and burglarizing her home. She suffered numerous stab wounds to her upper body as well as severe bruising and lacerations on her head, face and neck. Davy was hospitalized in critical condition and is now recovering. WOMB SERVICE
ORGANIZED LABOR
At press time, Melinda Arnold, 34, was waiting to hear whether her mother would be accepted as an organ donor for her daughter–with the organ being the mom’s womb. Melinda (a nurse from Melbourne, Australia) was born without one (though with healthy ovaries and eggs), and if the transplant by Swedish surgeon Mats Brannstrom of Gothenburg University is successful, and Melinda later conceives, her baby will be nurtured in the very same uterus in which Melinda, herself, was nurtured. Womb transplants have been performed in rats and, with limited success, from a deceased human donor.
A Chicago Tribune/WGN-TV investigation revealed in September and October the astonishing result that Illinois laws passed in 1997 and 2007 at the behest of organized labor have given at least three former union leaders lifetime government pensions as if they had been city or state employees, totaling an estimated drain on public budgets of about $7 million. Two teachers’ union officials were allowed to teach exactly one day to qualify, and an engineers’ union official was hired for one day, with the remainder of the service of the three having been on the payroll of the respective unions. A September Tribune report estimated that 20 other union officials might have been eligible under similar provisions.
BOMB BOXERS! A British manufacturer, BCB International, is flourishing, buoyed by sales of its Kevlar underwear, at $65 a pair, to U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. But soldiers and marines must buy them directly; the “Bomb Boxers are not supplied by the Pentagon even though nearly 10 percent of battlefield explosive-device injuries result in catastrophic genital and rectal damage. According to an October report in Talking Points Memo, the Pentagon’s currently issued protection is inferior to BCB’s but is less expensive. Although the Pentagon fully funds post-injury prostheses and colostomies, it could purchase about 7,700 Bomb Boxers for the price of a single Tomahawk missile.

saw you driving in the left lane at the same speed as the car in the right lane. Why didn’t you move over? It would not only have been courteous, but also really simple. Some people like to drive faster than others, just like some people walk faster than others. If you were walking down the road and someone walking faster came up behind you, would you move over or just keep walking and blocking their way? I know this isn’t the Mainland, but we are still living in a civilized society were people should treat each other with kindness and respect. â–

Let’s be honest.
CHARITY
Government, at all levels in American society, is getting smaller. Call them what you will–government programs, bureaucracies, whatever–are doing less and less each year, especially for the poorest members of society. We still have to pay taxes, but many of the health, education and welfare services we’ve come to expect from public agencies are simply no more.
GUIDE
Non-profit organizations are trying to pick up the slack, but they need your help. They need money, of course, and volunteer labor, but often they might just need some of your old stuff (as long as it’s in good, workable condition). So please look over the following wish lists from many of our island’s non-profits and charities, and find the best way you can help.

too. To keep it local I used Kabocha from Kula Fields’ delivery service, and all of the herbs and tomatoes came from Maui as well. Also to keep it vegan I used vegetable broth and swapped out the cream it called for with canned coconut milk. The resulting soup was rich, flavorful and a big hit for my family. Finlayson really knows what she’ doing. When I asked her for tips about cooking fish in the slow cooker (no easy task), she said, “Add it at the end, and be very watchful of the time. Bite size pieces of fish take about 15 minutes on high after being dropped into the bubbling dish. In the book, Finlayson prefaces each recipe with a brief introduction that states where the dish comes from, how to serve it best and/or changes you can make. Some recipes do require a bit of prep work, or call for part of the recipes to be cooked on the stove (you’d be amazed at how fancy a crock pot meal can get). Chapters include discussions of grains and sides, beans, soups, desserts, fish, seafood, vegetarian favorites and appetizers, along with meatier chapters on poultry and pork. I really appreciated that Finlayson tested all the recipes in her book, and has a tester that retests. When she added the healthy recipes, she developed them herself, then tweaked them until they were perfect. The 150 Best Slow Cooker Recipes came through for me. It’s a book that will expand my crock pot repertoire with some new side dishes as well as a few seafood and vegetarian mains. It’s also inspiring me to try a couple other tricks besides just dumping a huge cut of meat in the pot. ■jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For a post-thanksgiving recipe from Finlayson's book go to mauidish.com

BY JEN RUSSO ith a long weekend ahead of eating, chances are you’ll put something together in the kitchen. One of my favorite culinary appliances is the slow cooker (aka the “crock pot). It may sound like lazy business to you, but cooking with the slow cooker can be as easy or as complex as you like. Just ask Chad Metcalfe, who won the Maui 2011 Crockpot Cook-off with a crispy skinned roast duck with Asianstyle sauce. In preparation for Thanksgiving’s multitude of thankful meals, I recently checked out the new book The 150 Best Slow Cooker Recipes by Judith Finlayson, recently released in its second edition with new recipes. Finlayson added a healthy twist to the book, apparently realizing that peoples’ tastes and diets are changing and that even vegans and vegetarians are turning to the crock pot to make delicious meals. “Recipes weren’t terribly sophisticated and relied on a lot of canned ingredients, which were, for instance, high in sodium, Finlayson wrote of the 1970s, when slow cookers were introduced. “I felt that there was a market for a more ‘upscale’ slow cooker book that included recipes that were more international in scope and that reflected contemporary tastes: dishes like French Onion Soup, Carbonnade, Osso Bucco, and Lamb Shanks, in addition to traditional chili and bean recipes. I was pleasantly surprised with the book’s large supply of pictures and welllaid-out recipes. Each recipe has a side bar that inlcudes tips for better preparing and utilizing ingredients – if you can make it ahead, halve it, if the recipe is vegan or vegetarian friendly, what size slow cooker you need and so forth. The first recipe I tackled was the Pumpkin Soup with Shrimp and Lime. I liked that the shrimp was added at the end so this dish works for vegetarians,

MEET BIG O-APPROVED AUTHOR MARIANNE WILLIAMSON - I haven’t been hip to Oprah’s it-list since, um, ever–so I was neither sure who Marianne Williamson is nor what “spiritual activist” means (as her Wikipedia page describes). Turns out, she’s a 10-time book author who’s got four titles on the New York Times’ Best Seller list, and founded both a campaign petitioning to establish the U.S. Department of Peace, as well as a meals on wheels program for Los Angeles peeps who are homebound with AIDS. Williamson is minister/ proponent of Unity Church’s New Thought, and will be on Maui for events–”Transforming Your Spirit” (Fri.), “Transforming Your Body” and “Transforming Your World” (Sat.)–which kicks-off tonight as she discusses “us[ing] the power of miracle-mindedness to forgive your past, electrify your present, and free your future from the confines of an out-moded sense of self.” See our Da Kine Calendar for more information. Fri.: $30 advance / $40 day-of. 5:45-6:45pm... Sat.: $30 advance / $40 day-of. 1:30-3:30pm... Sat.: $45 advance / $55 day-of. 4-7pm. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26 THE BAILEY SHOW WITH MUSEUM STEWARDS - In last year’s ear’s This Week’s Picks, I confessed that the Bailey House Museum makes me so o historyhappy that I’ve got a lovesick (emphasis on “sick”) desire to lie around all day just making dust angels on the floor. And hell, I’d do it if they didn’t keep everything so pristine–now augmented with beautiful holiday decor, to boot. al SoToday on the gorgeous grounds, museum stewards (The Maui Historical ciety, founded in 1951) host their annual fundraiser “A Bailey House Christmas.” A festive ho’olaulea with Hawaiian and traditional holiday music, featured entertainers include emcee Kathy Collins, George Kahumoku, Richard Ho`opi`i, the
Ukulele Ukulel Pops Band of Maui, Aunty Iola Balubar and Halau Hula O Keola-Ali`iokekai, Maui Madrigal, Madr “The Mad Bagpier” Roger McKinley and company, and cast members from Maui Mau OnStage’s “A Christmas Carol.” Plus, attendees can enjoy ono grinds from various vendors and get great gifts at their special Christmas Craft Market and at the museum’s gift shop. (PS: Please remember that coolers, alcohol and pets are fine things to lug to the beach, but not to the museum’s event.) $10 advance / $15 d door / Free for keiki 12-years-old and under (includes museum admission). 10am-3pm. 1 Bailey House Museum (2375-A Main St., Wailuku); 244-3326; mauimuseum.org mauimu
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 27 DIY ORATORIO - Christmas songs are nice because, in the spirit of the season, they invite all to carol along–even those for whom shower mold cringes and karaoke mics issue TROs. Keeping with this, the Maui Choral Arts Association presents “Sing-It Yourself Messiah,” where the audience gets the A-OK to join in signing the glorious choruses of George Frideric Handel’s famed work “Messiah.” The event features
a petite orchestra, and local professional voices (hallelujah!) of Lisa Paulson, Karyn Sarring, Robert Brantley and Robert E. Wills, who perform the oratorio’s solos.Tickets available online or by calling 1-800838-3006. $15 adults / $10 students 18-years-old and younger (w/ valid ID). 3:15pm doors / 4pm show. Kihei Baptist Chapel (1655 S. Kihei Rd.); 870-5560 / mauichoralarts.org
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 28 IT’S ELECTRIC! BOOGIE WOOGIE WOOGIE! - David Starfire (who’s giggin’ at Casanova on Sat., Nov. 26 with DJs The Kidd and Boogiemeister, plus VJ Douglas Deboer and live painting by Melissa Bruck–see our Da Kine Calendar’s Big Shows section for more) leads a song writing and production course for those interested in learning electronic music
making skills with the software Ableton Live (please bring your computer and headphones). Attendees will receive a CD with Starfire’s signature sounds and Ableton templates to help you create your own work. Space is limited. Register by e-mailing bioniclove@gmail.com. $35. 6-9pm. Temple of Peace (575 Haiku Rd.); davidstarfire.com
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30 GEORGIA ON MY MIND - In 1939, Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986)–“took on mythic proportions... [creating] an exceptional corpus of work ranging from abstraction to realism”–visited Hawaii, having been commissioned by Dole Pineapple to paint two fine artworks for commercial use. Charles Coiner, the art director for Dole’s advertising firm, believed in “select[ing] upscale images for educated and sophisticated readers of ‘class’... even if they [were] not already familiar with the artist, [they suspected] they should be.” Her personal guide around Maui was 12-year-old Patricia Jennings, daughter of Willis Jennings, the manager of Ka’eleku Sugar Plantation. Jennings (with Maria Ausherman) shares her vivid memories of this intriguing time in art and Hawaiian history in a beautiful new book Georgia O’Keeffe’s Hawai’i, introduced by Jennifer Saville (curator of a 1990 exhibition of O’Keeffe’s Hawaii-insipired work) and published by Kihei’s Koa Books. Now 85-year-old Jennings will read this Wed. as part of a special statewide book tour–the perfect chance to purchase this must-have local lit, which showcases O’Keeffe’s work, her letters from Maui and 50 period photos. 6pm. Higashi Room, MACC (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 242-SHOW (7469) / 875-7995; mauiarts.org / koabooks.com
STOP AT “INNERSECTION” - Last year, Valley Islanders helped Mauian Matt Meola–the surfing world’s golden boy–win $100,000 by buying the 2010 Innersection DVD and voting for his surf segment in the annual Taylor Steele Steele-and Nathan Myers-produced film (a hip collection of mini-flicks by 25 qualifying surfers from around the globe). Meola’s back in this year’s movie (plus likewise local Albee Layer and H Hank Gaskell) with his innovative section featuring appearances by Wood Harrelson and Willie Nelson, with music by Lukas Nelson. All three hot sh shot surfers will be on hand at the film’s big MACC premier (one of a bunch of o simultaneous world premiers in other of the contributing surfers’ home town towns), where they’ll sign autographs and give away gargantuan goodies like surfboards, sur cameras and sunglasses. More good news: the event’s a fundraiser fu for the relocation of the beloved Kuau M Mart, which closed earlier this year after long-fought landlord/tenant issues. Pre-show dinner made available by Fred’s Mexican Cafe. $20 adults / $10 keiki 12-years-old and younger. 7pm. Castle Theater, MACC (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 242-SHOW (7469); mauiarts.org

Because with so many holiday stops to hop between–seeing as there’s such long lists to make and check twice–hippety hoppers might better inspire shoppers than, say, a fat guy in a furry suit. But we digress. Anyway, be like a bunny at Paia Fourth Friday and jump around the myriad mini parties throughout town. Here’s your shop-byshop scoops: Agua De Flora (161 B Hana Hwy.; 5793339) offers 5 percent off some oils and RueBelle jewelry, and Bobby Joe performs celtic harp music (6-9pm).

It’s much simpler to not get involved in correcting injustices around you. Usually, those problems are at best inconvenient to correct, and downright dangerous, at worst. However, ignoring a wrong isn’t in your nature, so it’s almost a foregone conclusion that you’re going to get involved, somehow. Given that probability, be smart about it. Try to consider the big picture, instead of simply jumping in at the first opportunity. Where can you do the most good, and how might you minimize the negative impact on your own life? Clearly answering those two questions, before you leap into action, will make that action so much more effective and satisfying, it’s ridiculous.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
Supposedly, people who are missing one sense somehow develop greater acuity in their remaining senses. I doubt this is true in most cases, and think it’s more likely that they’re simply paying much more attention to the stimulus coming in, so they notice things others (distracted by their pesky sight or hearing, say) don’t. However, people with all their senses and faculties intact can, of course, learn to notice stuff they currently don’t— at least I hope so, since the most important stuff happening in your week is stuff that’d normally fly right below your radar. Here’s hoping you’re alert enough to take note of it.
QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions on page 6
1: C–There are currently no “mansions” constructed on ag lands in Maui County. 2. E–A non-invasive body image scanner in security. 3. B–They had their personal information stolen by hackers.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Some people get more attention (in whatever form) because they need more. Sure, it’s unfair that they get more than their share, and it’s difficult to not resent them. But remember, it’s because they suck (at least compared to you). You may want what they’re getting, but if you’re honest with yourself, you don’t really need it. Sometimes, you might want to speak up and be the squeaky wheel long enough to get a little grease, but this week I’m pretty sure you’ll be better off just doing your own thing and letting the attention whores do theirs.
You can offer your two cents, of course (as if anyone could stop you), but ultimately other people’s relationships with each other are almost completely out of your hands. They need to work things out for themselves. It’s not your job to play mediator, conflict resolver, judge or jury—even if some people fully expect and demand that you step into one of those roles. Resisting the temptation to do so will probably be painfully difficult for you— but you should, anyway. You’ve got enough on your plate—stay out of the stuff that’s, ultimately, none of your business. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
Ultimately, people have to help themselves. You can offer a hand, but the bottom line is they need to be motivated enough to take it and do something with the head start you give them, or you’re just wasting your time. I admire your determination to be there for the people who need you, but this week be sure to carefully evaluate each situation before you get involved. If you’re not discerning, smart, and a little bit cynical about who gets which piece of you, you’re likely to waste your time (and effort)—and that doesn’t do anyone any good.
Never, ever be stingy. You’re mostly unfailingly generous, so this isn’t likely to crop up often, but if you find yourself being clench-fisted or parsimonious, you need to figure out how to get over that, fast. Being downright miserly is just plain bad for your soul and wellbeing. Reclaim your natural tendencies and be as warmly generous as your ruling “planet,” the sun—for your own sake as well as everyone else’s. Sure, we’re in a recession, and being thrifty is wise. However, there are ways and ways to be wonderfully lavish without spending a lot of money. Find them. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
People screw up. You’re more forgiving than most about those errors, so it’s hard for you to understand how someone can refuse to take the olive branch when you offer it. Let me shed a little light on the situation: this isn’t about you; it’s about them. Some people experience crippling shame and embarrassment about their failures. That means that even if you’re ready to forgive and forget, letting bygones be bygones—they are not. I wish you could teach them your brilliant way of humbly laughing at your own mistakes, but they’re not likely to be receptive—so forgive them again when they rebuff you, and patiently wait for them to get there on their own. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
Tough love sounds great in theory, but when your bluff gets called, the tender heart beating beneath your loud, trash-talking exterior has trouble following through. That’s okay. It’s not necessarily your role to play. Do make sure you consider the big picture, though, because if you fail to make good on your threats/promises, they won’t mean much the next time you make them. If you can live with that, then by all means, cave in now. But if you want to be taken seriously next time, you need to make sure you’re taken seriously this time, too—which, like it or not, means doing what you said you would. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
Other people’s lives are so fascinating, aren’t they? Some Bulls end up taking more of an interest in them than they do in their own arguably less interesting (to them, anyway) existences. It doesn’t matter whether the subjects of your reveries are real or fictional—that they shouldn’t eclipse whatever’s going on in your life should go without saying. Sure, your life may not be as fascinating as whatever soap opera (on TV or off) has caught your attention, but you should still find it fairly fascinating. If you don’t, it’s time to figure out what needs to change so you do.
Expectations lead to disappointment. We know this—but that doesn’t mean we can simply stop having them (all the time, anyway). Once in a while, we get attached to some idea that simply won’t pan out. How we cope with that disappointment has a lot to do with how many more similar letdowns we’ll be forced to experience. In other words, if you can move on cleanly from this latest disappointment, and be just as open and hopeful as you were before it, you won’t be doomed to repeat it. Simple in concept, difficult to execute—but you can do it. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
Letting go of self-consciousness and worry (or even excessive awareness) about what people think of you is tremendously hard for you Libras; yet being able to even partially do so is amazingly liberating and empowering. I can’t tell you how to do this, as it’s a highly individual and personal process, but I can let you know that this week is a fantastic time to try out some stuff that might help you make good progress in this department. Go wild. Experiment with being more silly, playful, and funny. Except for the assholes, people will probably respond pretty positively—thereby encouraging the whole process, which can only be a good thing.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
I love watching people fulfill their dreams, or otherwise transform from a helpless, lost person to one who’s confident, open, and inspired. That’s one of my favorite things in life. Of course, everyone gets lost at one time or another. Since you’re in such a good place, I hope you find a way (and take the time) to help someone who’s not doing nearly so well. Even if they wouldn’t normally be receptive to such advice or aid coming from you, they’re likely to be more open-minded about it this week than usual. The coolest part is, the happier and more fulfilled the people around you are—the happier and more fulfilled you will be, too. This is full of win, so don’t be shy about trying to make it happen.
