K, first off, we understand that this election started in like February of 1997 and most people not named Obama or McCain (and maybe even those guys) are friggin’ sick of it. But there’s a reason why buzz got generated so early—because this election, whatever the outcome, marks the end of quite possibly the worst administration in the nation’s history (you’re off the hook, Warren G. Harding). It also presents the real possibility that we’ll send the first non-Caucasian to 1600 Pennsylvania, and he seems like a decent guy, with Hawaii roots, to boot.
O
So there are reasons to get excited. And we are excited, but not so much about the ballots that’ll be cast in November as the ones that were cast recently for our very own Best of Maui. You voted—in record numbers—we tabulated, and here are the results, presented by our hardworking team of contributors and augmented by some purely subjective editorial picks (hey, not everything has to be democratic). Want to find out where the best pupus are sold? Or where you can buy a shot and a brew from the finest bartenders (male and female) on the island? Or which ocean activity readers picked as their favorite? The answers are inside. And we promise, this time it won’t come down to Ohio and Florida. Contributors: Jessica Armstrong, Starr Begley, Chloe Bender, Kate Bradshaw, Rob Parsons, Anthony Pignataro, Lindsey Riesinger, Jen Russo, Jacob Shafer, Ynez Tongson.

BEST ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE Superferry The environmental and legal waters became even more turbulent in the year that passed since Hawaii Superferry earned last year’s nod as Best Environmental Issue. And by “Best,” we believe readers of course mean “Worst.” After all, aren’t environmental issues defined as government willingness to let big money projects run rampant over natural resources and common sense? Let’s review: Superferry launches $5 fares last August, jumping ahead of a looming court date to halt them. Citizens of Kauai jump on surfboards and block entry to harbor. Judge listens to a month of testimony and agrees there is the likelihood of adverse environmental impacts and calls for EIS first. Governor and legislature call special session, and draft new law to trump his ruling. High seas keep Superferry in port. Soon after, the 350-foot long fast-ferry is in drydock to repair damage to hull. Once repaired, second daily trip to Maui is added. Inspections reveal plundering of Maui resources: river rocks, ‘opihi, seaweed, reef fish, and octopus. Did we mention the close calls in near-collisions with whales, including three within 50 yards, one of which was 5-10 feet from the vessel? Yes, Superferry’s got issues! [RP]

West Maui’s County Council representative Jo Anne Johnson is nothing if not well-loved, at least by Maui Time readers if not by big developers to whom she routinely has said, “No.” Even before upsetting incumbent Dennis Nakamura back in 2000 by a mere 130 votes, she was working to slow the pace of development in her West Maui District, limited as it is by over-crowded roadways and schools, and other infrastructure shortfalls. Believing her popularity is a reflection of her great love for her community, she said one of the greatest things is when people stop her out in public and thank her for the job she’s doing. “That’s something money can’t buy,” she said. Apparently she can’t be bought either—consistently winning re-election on a shoestring campaign budget— and her voting record. [RP]

The Hawaiian word “aloha” means a lot more than simply “hello” and “goodbye.” It’s complex and nuanced and ranges in meaning from “beloved” to “how sad.” How in the world did putting a word like that on the side of trash trucks become honorable? [AP]
BEST PLACE TO SEE MAUI’S INTERNMENT CAMP PAST Horizons Academy in Haiku There are no signs, markers or plaques identifying or memorializing the location of the World War II Japanese American internment camp that once sat near today’s Pauwela Cannery in Haiku, but the building that houses the Horizons Academy seems to be the last surviving camp structure. “Reportedly built as bachelors’ quarters for the plantation and used by the military for an officers’ club, it would have been present when the internment camp was in operation,” states the December 2007 Trans-Sierran Archaeological Research report on World War II Japanese American Internment Sties in Hawai‘i. “The building has been extensively remodeled, with new siding and windows, but the general structure, including the post and pier foundation, appears to be original.” 740 Haiku Rd. [AP]
BEST (WORST) COUNTY BLUNDER Wailea 670 If “blunder” can be defined as, “a usually serious mistake caused by ignorance or confusion,” then the County Council’s handling of the rezoning for Wailea 670/ Honua‘ula fits perfectly. After all, the Council’s narrow 5-4 vote to approve the massive South Maui project for luxury homes, a private golf course, and a smattering of affordable rentals slated for a North Kihei lightindustrial zoned parcel quickly wound up in court. Judge Joseph Cardoza agreed with five citizens who said their right to public input guaranteed by the state’s Sunshine Law had been violated by Council Planning Committee Chair Mike Molina’s continuing meetings over several days without allowing public comment on new information. Add the Council majority’s complicity to allow a golf course to replace remnant dryland forest native plant habitat and cultural sites, and to approve private water and wastewater systems, in light of Molokai Ranch’s recent efforts to punt from their obligation to operate similar private utilities. But, votes in a readers’ poll don’t always equate to votes on election day, and come November, those five Council members who voted to approve Wailea 670 may just blunder their way for another two-year stint of public service. BEST POLITICAL ACTIVIST Joe Bertram For years, Joe Bertram III has unwaveringly chanted a mantra of “greenways and bike paths” for community design, and long before $145/barrel oil made us all think twice about our transportation options.Typically, winners in this category haven’t been elected officials, but those who have run for office unsuccessfully and, undaunted, are still working hard on community and environmental issues. Joe is all that, too. After a few unsuccessful bids for County Council on the Green Party ticket, and a 5-year stint on the Maui Planning Commission, in 2006 Bertram won the South Maui State House seat vacated by Chris Halford. What made Joe popular with the Maui Time set? “That’s a good question,” said Bertram. “Maybe because I try to keep it positive all the time.” Maybe Maui Time voters also noticed his support of House Bill 2675, to establish a task force to study issues regarding medical marijuana law reforms. [RP]
Runner-up: Rob Parsons
BEST REVOLVING DOOR Dain Kane Originally I had my money on former county Public Works Director/current Wailea 670 “representative” Charlie Jencks, but then I remembered Kane. For years he sat on the Maui County Council, but these days he’s a lobbyist for BlueEarth Biofuels—that big outfit that wants to partner with HECO to build giant biodiesel refineries that will run on palm oil. [AP]
BEST USE OF COUNTY FUNDS Save Honolua Perhaps no ad hoc citizens group has accomplished so much so quickly as the Save Honolua Coalition. The efforts began in early 2007, after hearing Maui Land & Pineapple’s proposed plans to “improve” access to the West Maui surf Mecca and fragile Marine Conservation District at Honolua Bay (which included luxury homes and a golf course on Lipoa Point above the bay). Citizens countered with T-shirts, sign-waving, bumper stickers, letters, weekly meetings with community leaders as featured speakers, 14,000 petition signatures, and a packed house when the matter came before the County Council. Due to the community outcry, ML&P has shelved their conceptual plans and gone back to the drawing board. More importantly, the Council earmarked one million dollars towards future acquisition of Lipoa Point. And that, readers surmised, was worthy of recognition for Best Use of County Funds. [RP]
Runner-up: Old Maui High restoration
BEST PLACE TO SEE NATURE TRIUMPH OVER HUMAN DEVELOPMENT South Kihei Road at the Maui Lu resort Every few months (or weeks, depending on the weather), county work crews have to come out here and shovel sand off the asphalt. We hear about beach erosion all the time, but here in Kihei you can watch South Maui sand blow across the road in real time! Considering the size of the dunes that loom over the road, it’s likely drivers will have to contend with sand drifts along the center line for a long time to come. [AP]

BEST TATTOO SHOP Pacific Rootz Thank God for Samson and Pacific Rootz, Kihei’s oldest tattoo shop. Since I haven’t been tatted there before I had to call and try to get some info about his shop without blowing the cover that he had just won best tattoo shop in all of Maui. From the sound of it, you readers are really onto something. For one, Pacific Rootz is quite possibly the only local/Hawaiian run tattoo parlor on the island (I’m sure you guys will correct me if I’m wrong). And they do all kinds of cool stuff from portraits to Pacific Island art. In fact, they do hand pricking and hand tapping too, but not for the Polynesian stuff because that’s sacred and not for commercialism. I saw an unbelievably sick tattoo online of a Manta Ray and head piece that came out of Pacific Rootz and am pretty much going to take all of your advice and get my next tattoo done there. 847 S. Luckily for those of us that make chump change, Friends of the Library exists. This is a place that you can get a boatload of books for practically nothing. My family has been stopping by Paradise Pharmacy in Pukalani for years and I’m not blowing hot air up your rear by saying that it’s the absolute bomb-diggity.The Pharmacy of all pharmacies. As an admitted hypochondriac it’s always nice to have pharmacists that are willing to answer every little stupid question that I have without snickering. The women who work the counter are always SUPER nice and helpful. Not to mention they have a great toy section that perks the rug rats up when they feel junky. Which, although a bummer on the bank account, is a good thing. 81 Makawao Ave #21, Makawao, 572-1266. [SB]

BEST PLACE TO GET A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT… CHEAP! Kama‘aina Loan A buddy of mine swears he found a perfectly good, remarkable sounding Squier Bullet that should have cost something like $400 for just $140. In fact, he was so shocked that he immediately ran to the bank (delaying our lunch engagement by at least 10 minutes), withdrew the money and then ran back and bought it before, as he put it, “they realized how much it was worth.”You couldn’t believe how proud he was when he finally came to lunch and showed off… the receipt. “So where’s the guitar?” I asked. “Back at the shop,” he said. “I’ll pick it up when we’re done here.”“You left it there?!” I asked. “Aren’t you worried they’ll realize what a steal it was?” His face suddenly drained of color, my pal ran out of the restaurant and retrieved his new possession. 46 N. BEST PLACE ON MAUI TO FEEL LIKE YOU’RE IN L.A. Epitome Boutique I live in Lahaina, so I tend to do most of my clothes shopping in the small boutiques along Front Street. This graveyard scores well in the three main criteria for good graveyards: It’s in a good location, right on the edge of Paia Town; it sports a really good view of the ocean; and it has that wonderful old graveyard look. Every time I drive by I see family members inside visiting their dearly departed (photohungry tourists, too). And why not? If there’s a graveyard on Maui that just screams picnic lunch on a Saturday afternoon, this is it. [AP]

BEST PARKING LOT TO LEARN TO DRIVE A STICK
4310 L. Honoapiilani Rd. Kahana Manor
Granted, it would probably be best if we had all learned to drive a stick in a large cow pasture Upcountry. That way damage to property and the humiliation factor would be kept to a minimum. But during the weekends and after nine at night, this parking lot is pretty dead because no one in their right mind wants to be anywhere near the DMV unless they are required to be. Of course, you might want to call someone and figure out what the legalities are, but we’ve never been told to go home. Plus, you can lick your wounds over a Frostey at Wendy’s next door when you’ve had enough or your transmission falls out. Whichever comes first. [SB]

BEST BOOKSTORE Borders On an island like Maui you can’t just waltz in from the Mainland with a big, fancy attitude and expect everyone to love you. It takes time to win over the Maui crowd, and Borders has definitely punched that clock. Besides the superstocked Kahului store with a huge inventory of books and music there’s several smaller satellite stores around the island that carry pretty much anything you need or can order it in for you, pronto. Plus there’s the cool “rewards” card that gives a kama’aina discount to everyone. Located islandwide. [JA]

BEST (WORST) LOCAL FASHION BLUNDER Crocs Yes, I realize that Crocs are some of the most comfortable and functional shoes on the market and many people seem to think they’re completely genius, but in my humble opinion those rubber slip-ons make feet look ridiculously big and frumpy. I’ll admit that my own footwear is not always high fashion (I’ll wear slippers pretty much anywhere outside of a courtroom) but it still cracks me up that people think their bright orange, clunky Crocs go with every outfit. Requests McCain: Old enough to remember when people other than hipsters bought records.
Different people have different views about what makes a good record store. For some, it’s all about selection and convenience (see our runner up). But for those who value that funky, scruffy, off-beat quality and would rather thumb through hard-to-find titles than run straight for the latest top 40 hit, Requests is the place. Located just across the street from our Maui Time offices, it boasts an eclectic collection of CDs and records, including an impressively large reggae section. And while they’re winning for “record shop,” you can also swing by for reasonably-priced used DVDs—ranging from new releases to old school blaxploitation flicks—plus books and t-shirts. If you haven’t already, give them a spin. 10 N. Market St., Wailuku, 244-9315. [JS]

BEST NEW RESTAURANT Wok Star Yeah, yeah, Wok Star has great noodles. I know you can get them in all sorts of configurations from dry mein to ramen, plus plenty of flavor varieties such as teriyaki or curry. But have you tried the peanut butter and bananas? It’s called a Jaffel. Just a pressed sandwich, really—peanut butter, honey and bananas on Hawaiian sweet bread— then cut into triangles and sprinkled with powdered sugar. Very simple, straightforward and impossibly delicious. Wok Star sells them, along with the tasty noodle dishes. Get one early in the day or late in the evening, it matters not; they’re open from 7am to midnight so its your choice. Just get one. 1913 S.Kihei Rd., 495-0066. [AP]

BEST RESTAURANT Mama’s Fish House Mama’s Fish House was the first restaurant on island to prepare fresh fish. Opening its doors on the North Shore in 1973, the restaurant boasts original Polynesian artifacts, unique flower arrangement and innovative local woodcarvings. Mama’s Fish House has an award-winning menu, and the food is amazing. All of this reputation and quality drive prices high, so the next time Mom and Dad want to take you out, let them know you’ll make the reservations at Mama’s. BEST DINING WITH A VIEW Sarento’s on the Beach If the election or any other mainland-centric hype-fest causes you to forget your own whereabouts, this place will remind you of how lucky you are to live on Maui. Competition is especially tough for this category, given the astonishing array of mindblowing landscapes on the island. From the patio at Sarento’s you have a sweeping view of the sparkling Pacific, Molokini, Kahoolawe, Lanai, and Maui’s coastline. Unless someone’s McCainesque mug is somehow blocking your view, there’s not a bad seat in the house. BEST BAR South Shore Tiki Lounge Nestled in the heart of Kihei’s fabled Bar-muda Triangle, this place is the quintessential island boozer’s haven; a landslide victory for the retro-tropical set. Yet there is more to the place than blowfish lanterns and killer punchbowl Mai-tais. The surprisinglynot-too-sweet lychee-watermelon martini gets my vote, tasty and intoxicating. They also serve great housemade pizza, salads, and sausage sandwiches. The place gets pretty packed on weekends, and there is either live music or a DJ spinning out tunes every night. BEST MALE BARTENDER Renie Hamayelian, Tiki Lounge I should probably disclose right now that I’ve had a major crush on Renie for about four years, but I promise I had nothing to do with the vote count. In fact, I’m pretty sure that hundreds, no thousands of Maui women have had the hots for Renie over the years. Alcohol does that to you. Scratch that, alcohol and a highly intelligent bartender who’s literate, articulate, rides a motorcycle, plays some pretty good poker and can pour a Guinness like a god does that to you. I have heard that there is a Mrs. Renie and I’d like to send out a congratulations on landing the best guy on the island, er, Best Male Bartender. I’ve heard that you totally deserve each other and hope that you’ll live happily ever after. Damn it, where’s my beer?! 1913 S Kihei Rd. J, Kihei, 874-6444. [SB]

Kujo knows local food and locals know Kujo.Take my neighbor for example; he loves Kujo just as much as you do. According to him, they have phenomenal katsu, a good beef tomato, are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the owners are nice and friendly. He actually used the term “local fabulous.” Something has got to be said for a place that has a “buy three plate lunches get the fourth one free” deal. They are tucked away in Kahului industrial, but once you find them you will know why Maui Time voters put Kujo at the top of local food on the island. 385 Hoohana St., Kahului, 877-9080. [SB]

Eclectic is one tried-andtrue way of describing the menu here, but there seems to be a method to the way things come together at Mala. Take, for example, seared ahi bruschetta, which takes place on flax seed toast and involves edamame puree. The first-course menu here seems most comfortable speaking Greek, but throws in a few slang words from as far away as the Pacific Rim. Also intriguing is the extensive drink menu. My next mission is to see how well the hummus plate pairs with Mala’s handmade sangria. 1307 Front St. Lahaina, 667-9394. [KB]

BEST STEAK Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse I would sell my soul. I take that back. I would put my soul up as a timeshare if I would be guaranteed to be able to eat at Ruth’s Chris every night for all of eternity. It appears that most of our readers feel the same way. I don’t know what it is about Ruth’s Chris but the steak is supernaturally delicious. It’s not natural. I mean, yeah their steak is natural…In fact they use island beef, but a taste that good just can’t be for real. I’m thinking this restaurant may have already sold its soul. BEST MEXICAN FOOD Las Piñatas Las Piñatas is pretty much why I became an intern at Maui Time Weekly.Years ago, while enjoying a huge plate of delicious nachos, I stumbled across an issue. I also picked up a copy on another visit, while gorging myself on the scrumptious Kitchen Sink Burrito. From then on, I associated the euphoria I felt from my taste buds and the pleasant feeling of being full with this very publication. So there you have it: Las Piñatas is a fiesta for your mouth but beware! Your food high may cloud decision-making skills. At least it did for me. BEST PLACE TO BUY WINE Costco With booze, I’ve always been impressed with quantity rather than quality. But at Costco, the corporate shopping co-op haven, you can have both. I’m just a sucker for the sight of their wine section, the fancy bottles in the wood crates, the cases upon cases of bottles, gleaming under the fluorescent lighting like pirate gold. Not only that, but they also have a great variety of wine, with interesting ratings and descriptions for wine know-it-alls.You voted smart, economical, and right on the nose with this one. In addition to being a good place to buy groceries, take the family out to dinner, go on a date (free appetizers) and watch free movies, Costco has been formally recognized as an excellent place to buy wine.Too bad your votes don’t get you a membership here too, cuz that will cost you extra. 540 Haleakala Hwy., Kahului, 871-8693. Made with locally grown products including... Guava ~ Mango ~ Papaya ~ Coconut Lilikoi ~ Strawberry ~ Lychee ~ Lime Ginger ~ Mango Chutney & more!

The fact that Mama’s Fish House prevails here is no surprise. I can tell you Maui Time foodies have your hearts set on Polynesian atmosphere, ocean front dining, fresh fish, nothing but the best for you. Everything on the menu is tastefully creative and almost-too-pretty-to-eat. Personally my favorites are the more simple dishes, like the grilled Portobello mushroom with sun dried tomato and our local Surfing Goat Dairy goat cheese. BEST PIZZA Flatbread Company Although some purists may call for a recount—citing evidence that flatbread is not technically a pizza—I say let the ruling stand. There’s fresh dough, creative toppings and sauce on a pie that’s cut into slices. I don’t care what they call it; it’s pizza. They cook it in a giant wood burning stove right there in the middle of the restaurant. The crust is always perfectly crunchy and thin which means I can eat twice as many slices before I get that glazed-over look in my eyes. 89 Hana Hwy., Paia, 579-8989. Eating a fish sandwich is a quintessential north shore Maui casual dining experience, and Maui Time readers are together with me on this one. It has a great people watching corner, Hana Highway and Baldwin Avenue. You go in, order your food and sit on the communal picnic benches and either chat with familiar faces or make new friends. When your fish sandwich arrives, hot and delicious, you can either add one of the many hot sauces they have provided at your table or chow it down as is. They make it with their homemade coleslaw in the sandwich and it’s splendid. Prices are sensible, the fish fresh, plus you get to choose what kind goes in your sandwich, from mahi mahi to ahi to ono. Mahi is the best if you ask me, but you don’t have to take my word for it, because Maui Time readers voted and they know best. 100 Hana Hwy Paia, 579-8030. [JR]

BEST FINE DINING Lahaina Grill I know why the popular vote for Fine Dining goes to Lahaina Grill. Every year on my sister’s birthday we head to Lahaina Grill for our fine dining ritual. This is where we come to get away from kids, cooking and cleaning to be spoiled with impeccable service, filled with sumptuous food, and intoxicated on fancy liquor. The restaurant has an elegant Victorian vibe that brings out my inner 18th century decadence and diva. We get all gussied up and I eat fois gras and seared ahi with exotic gin and tonic, among other amazing food and drink pairings. A photographer may come around and shoot a few photos of our experience and email them to us.The chef may come out for a word or two. Or owner Jurg Munch could stop by our table and greet us. Our social experience is enriched as much as our culinary palate is satiated. We are absolutely fabulous for a few hours, then go home to the kids for our reality check. 127 Lahainaluna Rd, Lahaina, 667-5117. [JR]

BEST PLATE LUNCH Aloha Mixed Plate The readers of Maui Time got it right when they went to the ballots for Best Plate Lunch and checked off Aloha Mixed Plate. Aloha Mixed Plate has been a West Side fixture for years and
finds success serving up some seriously delicious plate lunches that are well worth the Pali drive and won’t break the bank. The Hawaiian Plate is the supreme local treat here. Let me explain: generous portions imu prepared kalua pork and cabbage, poi, rice, lomi lomi salmon, macaroni salad, and haupia are all joined together at the mere cost of $8.95. Plus you get to enjoy all this food right on their ocean front deck overlooking the Mala Wharf. Tons of other plate lunches are found on the menu and come in mini, regular, and jumbo sizes, so no matter what type of appetite you show up with, know that you will leave fully satisfied. 285 Front St., Lahaina, 661-3322. BEST DISHWASHER Scott Kilmer What can I say, except the man knows how to clean a glass. Many a night I have watched this bartender stand behind the South Shore Tiki Lounge bar, loading and unloading the dishwasher, trying to understand the nuances of his trade. Never have I seen him break a glass! Not one! I have no idea how he does his job, but he does it with élan and a professionalism that is seldom seen on this island. South Shore Tiki Lounge, 1913 S. BEST FARMERS MARKET Honokowai Farmers Market All you folks on the west side have to look no further than the Honokowai Farmer’s Market to support your local farmers. According the votes, Maui Time readers who shop for fresh veggies and fruits like them here. If you have ever sliced open a fresh locally-grown papaya, juiced a fresh lemon over it and dove in with your spoon, you know the fresh fruit heaven Maui can provide. Don’t forget the sweet spiny pineapple, apple-banana, juicy mango or the harder to find guava and passion fruit. Most farmer’s markets on the island are only open a couple of days out of the week; after all, the farmers have to grow the food too! But you’ll find this one open Monday, Wednesday and Friday. 3636 Lower Honoapi’ilani Rd., Honokowai, 6697004. [JR]

WINNER OF THE
BEST BURGER ON MAUI FOR THE PAST 4 YEARS
BEST FISH TACOS Jawz
ACTUAL COOL CAT BURGER
You can’t go wrong wrapping a few edible items in a tortilla.Yet doing so in a way that attempts to please everyone results in something not unlike your average piece of environmental legislation: it will sorta-kinda do, I guess. Kihei’s Jawz is the more rogue-ish of fish taco joints. It started out as a roadside taco wagon outside Makena Beach, but now comprises the aforementioned mobile unit as well as a spot in Azeka Mauka. Mahi mahi tacos are huge here. Added bonuses of a stationary location include spirited beverages (and thus happy hour), and a salsa bar. Oh, and I checked it out: there are veggie options. 1279 S Kihei Rd., Kihei, 874-8226. [KB]

BEST HEALTH FOOD STORE Hawaiian Moons This time around, Hawaiian Moons beat out all other Maui natural foods titans to take the island’s top status as Best Health Food Store. So what kind of (soy-) beefing up does such an establishment do to accomplish this? As a longtime vegan I can vouch for this place, especially given their expansive supply of pesto sans Parmesan, and their vegan chocolate cake. But what stands out most here at Hawaiian Moons isn’t their hot food choices, or extensive salad bar, but the huge focus on locally made and grown products. Let’s all imagine an island where shipping costs for fresh produce and organic products don’t exist. Hawaiian Moons is taking us there one Kula strawberry at a time. 2411 S. Dragon Dragon
Never mix pleasure and business, right? Sure we’ve all heard this time and time again, but Cafe O’Lei’s diverse lunch menu forces us to bend the rules every once in a while.Their fabulous dishes help us to balance out the next flaky business encounter with an enjoyable, satisfying meal. What’s even better is that the prices are fair; you can order Blackened Mahi Mahi served with steamed rice and a salad for around nine bucks. A great selection of sandwiches and salads are also found on the menu, and the friendly atmosphere will leave you wishing that you were dragged out on a business lunch every day of the week. Maui Lani Golf Course, Kahului; 2433 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei; Market St., Wailuku. [CB]
Just saying “Da Kitchen” makes me hungry. Mega hungry. Good thing Da Kitchen makes people full. So full that I’m thinking it might not be a bad idea for them to invest in one of those dolly things to wheel people from their seats to their cars when they’re pau eating. Everything is good at Da Kitchen, but my favorite is the kalua pig plate with mac salad and a side of poi. The hamburger steak plate is a close second. 2439 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei, 875-7782; 425 Koloa St #104, Kahului, 871-7782. [SB]
The only thing that I love more than the great view for people watching at the Kihei Caffe is their coffee and boy do they have great coffee! We’re talking always hot, fresh and caffeinated. Kihei Caffe is (obviously, according to our readers) the best place on the island to sit with their cup-o-joe on a sunny morning and watch crazy pedestrians, dedicated joggers and people in bathing suits scoot around on South Kihei Rd. 1945 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei, 879-2230. [SB]
Mmm…Lemon Chicken. In my humble opinion, you readers are so right on with this vote. I love Dragon Dragon. I have so many memories there. Most are filled with lemon chicken, fired rice and that yummy garlic spinach dish, but some are filled with almond float and green tea ice cream too. One of the best things about Dragon Dragon is that the food always tastes so fresh, comes in large quantities and always arrives on your tale ridiculously quick. 70 E Kaahumanu Ave. #B12, Kahului, 893-1628. BEST BURRITO Maui Tacos I have only recently become infatuated with the Maui Taco burrito. But you Maui Time reader, you have held a long time romance with Maui Taco’s burrito, voting it to the top of the Maui Burrito charts since 2003. What’s not to love? You get a ginormous burrito, you can choose from any of their healthy grilled meats, beans and rice, and fresh veggies. Other options are spinach tortillas and homemade sauce. Its all so good and vegetarian friendly. Plus it comes with chips, as if you could even fit any more in your belly. Even better, you will find locations all around the island so no matter where you are, Maui Tacos is nearby. 840 Wainee Street, Lahaina, 661-8883; 275 Kaahumanu Ave., Kahului, 871-7726; 411 S. BEST VEGETARIAN Mana Foods Mana Foods is actually located on the site of my childhood church.Yes, it’s true.Today it’s all about organic produce, free-range meat and granola bars and yesterday (okay, twenty-some years ago) it was all about Jesus. Maybe that’s why Mana is so divine when it comes to the whole vegetarian scene.Their deli, hot food bar and salad bar are phenomenal. Here is where you come for the best teriyaki tofu ever. I just want to remind you readers about a little something though: Mana Foods isn’t only vegetarian. Nope, but that doesn’t take anything away from its healthy goodness. You’ll find everything here from seitan to grass fed beef , and its all high quality at a good price. 49 Baldwin Ave., Paia, 579-8078. BEST SUSHI Sansei It seems like Sansei isn’t really fighting fair in this “Best Of” battle. I mean, there’s no way a place that offers 50 percent off sushi for late night eaters AND has a panko crusted ahi roll that comes with such an amazing sauce is going to lose this competition. Add endless possibilities to laugh at your friends when they sing karaoke and you pretty much have a slam-dunk. Doesn’t really seem fair, does it? 1881 S. 100% NEW! MAUI RED $899
Visionary in the culinary industry, inspiration to his Maui Community College Culinary program roots, an artist with Hawaiian ingredients as his palette, Chef James McDonald can be proud of his win as Best Chef. Not busy enough with a trio of restaurants, Pacific’o, I’o, and the Feast at Lele in the 505 Front Street Center in Lahaina, Chef James honed in on starting the eight acre O’o farm in Kula, which he uses to supply his restaurants with fresh produce, fruits, herbs and aromatics. Arriving in Hawaii at the young age of 19, Chef James has worked hard to reach celeb chef status, using not just his good looks, but a strong sense of loyalty and a desire to contribute to the community with his knowledge of pacific rim cuisine and business sense. BEST PLACE FOR A NON-FIRST DATE Melting Pot
s day h 7 30pm c n lu – 2: ing erv m 11am s Now ek fro e aw
The other night my girlfriends took me out for a belated birthday dinner at Melting Pot. It was the first time that we’d been there and it was totally worth the agonizing drive to Lahaina. It took us three luxurious hours to eat our dinner. It was awesome! There was plenty of time to talk and gossip about people we know and the strangers sitting next to us. The bottom line is, considering the time spent savoring the food there, a first date may be iffy. What if that person ends up sucking? But, if you actually know for a fact that you like your date, there’s no better restaurant. 325 Keawe

Like some politicians, I sometimes pay for pleasure. However, my self indulgence consists of mainly tipping teenagers so they grudgingly sing me reworked versions of show tunes while they mash choice toppings like fudge, strawberries and M&Ms into Cold Stone’s house-made ice creams. I guess Maui Time readers go for this kind of stuff too, since Cold Stone took it away at the polls for Best Ice Cream. I don’t need to tell you that some politicians should follow our lead. Ice cream at Cold Stone is pure creamy deliciousness. Not only will the servers serenade you, they serve up some of the most delicious ice cream concoctions designed by none other than yourself. You don’t even have to pay extra for that. Located island-wide. [YT]

BEST MAI TAI Mai Tai Lounge There are a couple of things that make this popular island drink superior at the Mai Tai Lounge. First, they use crushed ice.The greater surface area keeps the cocktail Arctic cold, which in turn slows the melting of the ice and keeps the drink less watery. Then there are the multiple fresh-squeezed juices that get blended in a martini shaker before they’re poured, instead of simply being mixed together in the glass. Of course, the whole thing gets topped off with delicious dark rum, but at the very end they add a splash of a very mysterious and mind boggling sweet liquid. 839 Front St., Lahaina, 661-5288. [JA]

Okay, maybe “beauty” was a stretch; but still! We all know that there’s good Spam Musubi and not-as-good Spam Musubi. The votes are in and you, our dedicated readers and specially prepared assorted meat connoisseurs have locked it in. BEST ITALIAN FOOD Casanova I am so happy that our readers chose Casanova as the Best Italian Food winner because it’s so true! I’ll start with the focaccia bread, dipped in balsamic and olive oil. Orgasmic. No, really it is. My favorite main dish is the fungi pasta with chicken. It’s pretty exquisite–loads of mushrooms, buttery noodles and garlic–all heaped on a plate with tender strips of chicken breast. Not to mention, most nights, Casanova offers great late night entertainment that’s perfect for dancing off those extra, delicious, totally worth it calories. 1188 Makawao Ave., Makawao, 572-0220. BEST SAIMIN Sam Sato’s I could use saimin as a metaphor to describe Maui. Like saimin, Maui takes bits and pieces of different cultures and ethnicities and puts them together to create something wonderful. This phenomenon is something unique to Hawaii. Suffice it to say that the best bowl of something wonderful can be found at Sam Sato’s. Maui Time readers know how good it is and cast their vote for Sam Sato’s. Here the staff will greet you, ask about how your family is doing and then serve you the best bowl of saimin this side of the Pacific. At Sam Sato’s the broth is hot, the noodles are long and the meat doesn’t come from a can. 1750 Wili Pa Loop, Wailuku, 244-7124. [YT]

BEST FISH AND CHIPS Alexander’s Whenever we think of fish and chips, Alexander’s immediately pops into our minds. Why? Because the fish is deep-fried in a tempura-like, beer batter containing yummy herbs that ultimately results in a delectable creation. On top of that, they don’t mess around with their sauces. The tarter sauce served on the side is the traditional type, the way that any seafood lover’s condiments are supposed to be. Crisp french fries simply add to this wondrous meal, making it the obvious choice for the best fish and chips on Maui. 840 Wainee Street, Lahaina; Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center, Kahului; 1913 S. Kihei Rd. Well, apparently it’s not so simple, because not everyone gets it right. One place that does is Jamba Juice, another major chain that’s managed to win over wary locals with its tastily refreshing concoctions. Pineapple, strawberry, mango, orange, blueberry—whatever your fruit of choice may be, they’ll whip it, plus a few of its friends, into a blast of perfect-for-a-hot-afternoonpick-me-up goodness. Everything is packaged fresh, with varying amounts in each and sold at different prices to fit any appetite and budget. Did you know this already reasonable establishment also offers a web deal of the week program? This week it was ten percent off everything in the store, except tobacco and liquor and other sale products. Plus they have the best local produce around. BEST SWIMMING BEACH Big Beach Swimming at Big Beach is like a bad relationship—you think that if you can just get past the break, you’ll be fine. The water at Big Beach is calm and placid…on a flat day. Other days you’ll experience the awesome force of Big Beach’s spectacular shore break. On those days Big Beach is ideal for bodyboarding, skimboarding and even bodysurfing. But there will always be those among us who persist in swimming at a beach that is no longer hospitable. They’ll insist that if only they could get past the immense shore break—with its gigantic waves that threaten to suck you in, the whirling ominous, dark clouds of sand, the walls of water that threaten to crush you with sheer force—they’ll be back in waters that are calm, cool and refreshing. And for a time, they will be.This is, of course, before they realize they have to swim back to shore. [YT]

I have always had a fantastic time whenever I’ve swum there. I’m not sure what it is that really sets it apart from the other pools out there. Maybe it’s just that Kihei is so damn hot? Think that’s what makes it seem so extra wonderful? I mean, I live upcountry and while the pool is pretty nice, there’s not many days I feel like swimming unless it’s a freak-of-nature day and scorching hot. Who knows? What we do know is that for whatever reason, the Kihei pool rocks! 303 E Lipoa St., Kihei, 874-8137. [SB]

BEST BEACH TO LOOK AT BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE Kaanapali When people come to Maui, they aren’t just taking in the tropical sunsets, martinis and time to relax— they’re taking in all the beautiful people too! Maui Time readers voted Kaanapali one of the best beaches to look at beautiful people and that is no lie. The white sand highlights the golden glows on fabulously toned bodies, along with that extra sparkle from the sea. People-watching is fun, we can all admit that, but watching beautiful people basking in the golden sun is priceless. [LR]

BEST WAY TO SEE HUMPBACK WHALES Canoe or Kayak Sure, it’s fun to pack onto a boat with about 30 of your closest friends and ooooh and awwww in unison when a whale breaches close by, but no whale-watching cruise compares to paddling yourself out to the whales in a tiny one- or two-person craft. It’s really quite simple: after launching from shore, just steer for splashes. Sure, you might have to go a mile offshore, but when you get there, and all you hear in the world is the sound of air rushing through a blowhole or a fluke slapping the water, you’ll know why you made all that effort. Just don’t get too close—even though you’re small, the whales have the right of way. [AP]

FEEL GREAT!...LOOK GREAT! TWO NEW SUMMER FEATURES
Okay, you’re right! What’s not to love about Kam III? There’s lots of grass, BBQ stuff, sand, surf and lifeguards. Literally, it’s the kind of place that you can spend all day at. But what do you want me to say? You knew that already. How about I tell you about the time that I almost drowned after getting sucked out by the mean undertow or how I always get stung/bitten by little organisms in the water? You knew that too? It’s hard to say which side of Black Rock is better for snorkeling, the south or the north. On the north side there’s lots more coral and cute little fishes to chase around while you’re trying to avoid getting pummeled into the sharp rocks by big waves. The more sheltered south side, however, has an ample enough supply of sea life and the exhilarating possibility of getting jumped on by a cliff diver. BEST STOPLIGHT TO APPLY MASCARA Launiopoko If you’ve ever tried to make a left onto the highway from Lauiniopoko Beach Park and been stuck behind this agonizingly long stoplight you probably know where I’m coming from with this one. Once while waiting for this light to change I managed to comb the salt-water tangles out of my hair, apply mascara and write a really long text message, and I still had time to spare. Another time I completely emptied out my purse, organized the contents by frequency of use and slowly, methodically replaced it all. [JA]

We know that’s Gomega, but who’s the dude in the middle?
Gomega The name Gomega translates as “to go big,” and this is exactly what the band has been doing since around 2000. Funky beats are mixed with familiar local rhythms to create a fresh, ingenious sound that had been absent from the local scene before this band’s appearance. Gomega’s goal is to escape the trendy expectations of the music industry and produce tunes that they enjoy, allowing them to maintain a genuine sense of integrity. This attitude shines through every beat of their work and enables Gomega to effortlessly claim the title of Best Band on Maui. [CB]

BEST LOCALLY PRODUCED PODCAST The Stewart Bedasso Show Podcasts are a curious thing. Tech and gadget podcasts seem to thrive, but for those of us who don’t drool over the latest Apple iThing or follow every development in the Microsoft/Yahoo merger talks with religious fervor, podcasts present a far more difficult prospect. A good place to start, at least on Maui, is The Stewart Bedasso Show, which is podcast directly from Kihei on a more or less weekly basis. Hosted by Dave and Jill, the show is an hour-long mix of slapstick, funny stories, cynicism and high quality though often ridiculously obscure music. It’s a good mix, plus Dave is still relatively new to the island while Jill has lived on Maui for some time. And it’s always good when you can make fun of newcomers. www.stewartbedassoshow.com. [AP]
BEST WAY TO SEE OLD MAUI FROM THE COMFORT OF YOUR LIVING ROOM Lahaina: Waves of Change This 2007 documentary, directed by singer/musician/songwriter/filmmaker Eddie Kamae for the Hawaiian Legacy Foundation, is an exhilarating journey back to a time when burning cane smoke choked the Westside. BEST RADIO STATION Wild 105.5 Whoo-hoo! To me, this is by far the most exciting vote that’s been cast in all of Best of Maui history. But then again, I am extremely biased. As most of you know, every Monday morning I visit Wild 105.5 to do the Ed & Greg Show. Naturally, I’ve known for a few weeks now that their radio station beat out all the others to win Best of Maui. It’s been so hard not to tell the crew down there that all of the hard work that they’ve put in has really paid off. Maui has noticed! So, to the whole crew at 105.5, congratulations on a great station, exciting programming and kickass DJ’s. Restless Native is proud to be part of the madness. BEST THING ABOUT THE FAIR The Rides In some ways, the rides at the fair are even better than the ones at say, Disneyland, Universal Studios or even Six Flags. Those amusement parks are almost mundane in their safety. The Maui County Fair is really where it’s at. Maui’s thrill-seeking inhabitants have voted the rides as the best thing about the fair. There’s nothing quite as exciting as standing in the hot Maui sun, dirt between your toes, waiting, anticipating that thrill. You know the one, it feels like your stomach is in your throat. If that’s not your style, there’s always the gravity defying Ring of Fire and Pharaoh’s Fury, to quench your thirst for danger, daring and adrenaline. [YT]

Shaggy Shaggy is featured on 103.7 FM and brings a hip, youthful vibe to the radio waves. He’s on the air from 10am to 3 pm and keeps his audience captivated with his superb taste in local and reggae music. Shaggy’s quirky, candid conversations with artists and callers demonstrate his ability to effortlessly maintain his show, while his occasional dirty joke leaves us remembering the real reason we all voted for him in the first place. You can also check out Shaggy on the web at shaggylive.com to actually watch the live broadcast of the radio show. We all love to see a great movie. However, the theater that you go to can definitely affect your overall level of enjoyment, and sometimes it’s not all hunky dory (damn those people talking behind you). Nevertheless, Maui Mall Megaplex is everyone’s favorite because of the comfy rocking chairs in each theater and the gigantic screens that allow you to fully immerse yourself in the film you’re watching. In addition, the concession stand has enough candy to make Willy Wonka jealous. So even if the jerks behind you won’t stop jabbing about the Obama-McCain face off, you can still sit in style and enjoy the show. Maui Mall, Kahului. 70 E. Kaahumanu Ave. Ste. A, Kahului, 249-2222. Good Vibes Israel Vibration is the fo shizzle of roots reggae then that Israel Vibration—the band’s name is a reference to the Twelve Tribes of Israel branch of Rastafari—was conceived. To this day, Rastafari remains a central theme in Israel Vibration’s music and in the band members’ daily lives.

Israel Vibration has fought disease, religious bigotry and poverty. On top of these battles, they had to combat the devolving music scene in Jamaica during the 1980s. Rather than compromising their culturally inspired roots reggae sound to cater to club-friendly dancehall, the group decided to walk out halfway through the recording of 1981’s Why You So Craven. Eventually, the group became so dis-

On Maui, we’re bombarded with reggae. To us, it has become as mass-produced as something served by a fast food chain, and sometimes just as tasteless. Reggae has permeated our everyday lives—it’s played on our radios, finds its way onto our iPods and headlines our big concerts. In truth, reggae has become so commonplace that many of us give it the same attention we do a mynah bird on the side of the road. That is, very little. However, Israel Vibration demands your attention. This trio-turned-duo holds a place of prestige in reggae circles. Lascelle “Wiss” Bulgin, Cecil “Skelly” Spence and Albert “Apple Gabriel” Craig initially met as children, at a Kingston rehabilitation center where they were receiving treatment for polio. While there, they became interested in music, as well as heavily involved with the Rastafari movement. The administration of the center offered the boys an ultimatum: become less involved in Rastafari or leave. Fate soon saw them singing for their suppers and sleeping under the stars. While they briefly went their separate ways, fate once again intervened when they reunited in Kingston. It was

satisfied with the music industry within Jamaica that they relocated to New York. Later, the group disbanded and its members sought solo careers. This was only a slight setback; the group reunited, exemplifying Marcus Garvey’s belief that “Strength is Unity.” Their reunion was heralded by the album Strength of My Life. The group has been releasing strong albums since its conception, and 2007 saw the release of Stamina. As with all good music, Israel Vibration’s message transcends time and circumstance. Their earlier works are still as poignant as when they were first produced. Even better, Israel Vibration continually evolves its musical style and updates its social consciousness. They have realized that a different time means different people and ideas. The remaining members, Wiss and Skelly (Apple Gabriel left in 1997 to pursue a solo career), are certainly not beating a trite protest drum that people fail to notice. Rather than ignoring their tumultuous past, they help to bring positive understanding and facilitate discussion about polio by appearing on stage
with a variety of crutches. And their live shows are certainly entertaining as well as educational. If you think it’s impossible to skank while on crutches, you obviously haven’t seen Israel Vibration perform. Their powerful vocals and inspirational lyrics are backed by the Dub ensemble, Roots Radics. Together, Israel Vibration and Roots Radics musically intertwine to create a message that speaks to people of different lifestyles, locations and social statuses. This is feel-good music that encourages people to be good. So yes, Mauians have been in a relationship with reggae for a long, long time. As with most relationships, it sometimes becomes a tad mundane and a little too routine. But Israel Vibration is like the sly look across the kitchen table that makes you fall in love all over again—and, of course, happy the kids aren’t home. MTW

A note to parents: You do know kids compare their summers when they go back to school, right? Some kids will travel to foreign countries, others will go to different states and there’s always that one kid who shadowed his surgeon/movie star/community leader relative. What sort of story will your kid have this summer? Well, to help ensure that your progeny is at the top of his or her class (vacationwise, at least), you should give a call to the Pacific Whale Foundation Full Moon Tide Pool Explorations. Here kids will get to view rarely seen nocturnal species by the light of the moon. Okay, maybe it’s not France, but at least it’s not just sitting in front of the television. On the eve of her marriage to local hunk Sky (Dominic Cooper), Sophie has used information she culled from her mom’s old diary to invite Donna’s three former boyfriends to the wedding in the hope of discovering the identity of her unknown father. Mamma Mia! The biggest part of any director’s job is casting. It’s a dirty little secret that all the directing experience in the world can’t succeed without the right counterbalance of actors, conscious of the style and subtext of the material. To that end, renowned opera director Phyllida Lloyd makes her foray into feature film with the blessing of a perfectly

Loosely constructed from the plot template for the 1968 romantic comedy Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell, Mamma Mia! artificially shoehorns more than 15 ABBA songs into hit-or-miss plot point set pieces that give background on the spotlighted characters. It’s a carousel approach that refreshes the movie every five minutes with infectious joy and exposition. Dressed in high-water overalls and flimsy deck shoes, Meryl Streep is the ultimate expatriot matriarch living an idyllic existence with her sun-kissed daughter. Streep’s opening number “Money, Money, Money” announces Donna’s need for a man of means and establishes her no make-up approach to the woman at the eye of an emotional whirlwind that we already know will end well. It’s Meryl Streep making musical theater look not only easy, but also natural to a fault. With Streep’s famed glamour kept peacefully at bay, the film makes way for the unconventional casting of character actors Christine
Baranski and Julie Walters to shine. The three women tear into an inevitable rendition of “Dancing Queen” that works all the better for the credible chemistry between them as they sing about past glories with Donna as their center of attention. The lavish beauty of glistening Mediterranean blue water beneath majestic hilltops is barely a distraction during Donna’s climatic singing of “The Winner Takes It All” to the long-suffering Sam (Pierce Brosnan) as he does the math on their missed opportunities for romance and happiness. Brosnan’s palpable discomfort with singing and dancing, supports his character’s sense of displacement, and mirrors Streep’s doughty embrace of Donna as a strong-willed woman without an ounce of artifice, save her constant need to break into song. From its imaginative choreography and faux retro music production mode, Mamma Mia! The Movie is an explosion of pop sensibilities in a movie that makes lip-syncing look a far-sight better than anything on American Idol. If there’s anything Meryl Streep can’t do on film, we haven’t seen it yet. MTW

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
What started out as an exercise in flexibility may end up somewhere surprising. While playing devil’s advocate, you might come around to the point you’re making and take on that viewpoint for real. While play-flirting with someone, you could discover you’re actually attracted to them. This is what play is for, after all—it’s a chance to experiment with angles and attitudes that might not initially seem serious, but could turn out to fit you better than you ever imagined. Don’t be afraid to play, this week or any week. It’s the only thing likely to get you to where you really ought to go.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
It’s weird the way your behavior sometimes changes when you want someone to like you. Oddly, many Leos actually become less appealing when they shift into this mode. (This naturally ends up giving you the impression that you’re incredibly unlucky in love, which isn’t actually the case.) Keep being your somewhat abrasive, bossy, generous, and hyper-confident self! It’s real, and it’s the person any potential lover or friend would ultimately have to be cool with and into. Pretending you’re quieter, gentler, or shyer than you are simply can’t accomplish anything particularly good. Please don’t bother.

Proceeds to fund a women’s clinic on Maui
What you’re up to is like browsing garage sales in the late afternoon. All the good stuff has been snatched up already, but if you’re open-minded and flexible enough, this is when you’re likely to find the best deals. The sellers are eager to unload their crap, and you could pick up a fixer-upper at an amazing bargain. If you really had your heart set on one thing, you should have shown up in the morning while they were still setting up. That moment has passed now, and your best bet is to let your imagination run free, and see what you can create out of what’s still available.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
Some guy near Milwaukee came up with the insanely perverse and shortsighted idea of skipping out on bills by faking heart attacks. He got out of a bunch of cab bills, restaurant bills, and so on this way, before he was finally exposed. Now he’s likely to go to prison. Clearly this fellow hadn’t thought through his plan very well, and I wonder how the hassle of an ambulance ride to the hospital seemed like a better deal than just shelling out $25 for his dinner. I’m worried that your own scales are similarly (although hopefully not so extremely) out of whack, probably because of your emotional investment in the situation. Get them retuned before you start making choices like Mr. I’m Having Chest Pains. How? Check in with your sanest and most cynical friend. They’ll set you straight.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
When I was in school, I resented having to waste time and energy on skills and subjects that had absolutely no relevance for me, like perfecting my handwriting or learning trigonometry. It made the whole schooling experience lose credibility for me, because even my teachers couldn’t explain or justify why we needed to be good at that stuff. Your credibility’s in question, too, as you seem fixated on points as academic and largely irrelevant as, say, learning Latin. Correct your course. Make sure that the hoops you’re asking people to jump through are worth the effort they’ll have to make.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
Everyone thinks they’re a natural at sex, but almost no one is. Of course, it’s possible to improve on your own, with experience, practice, and feedback, but for those not quite sensitive or imaginative enough, sex schools might be the answer. Workshops and classes are popping up everywhere, teaching people how to stimulate their partner(s), talk dirty, or even kiss. I think it’d be great to be able to point those who really need it in the right direction. You’re likely to be asked to go learn something you think you already know this week. Instead of being resentful, give whoever’s asking you the benefit of the doubt, and go anyway.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
STOP RIGHT NOW!

Production Office: 33 N. Market St., Suite 201 • Wailuku, HI 96793 “Dude, if I couldn’t lick my crotch, I would SOOOOO be after this job, it sounds RAD! – So, it’s your call, but if I were you...I’d either go get this killer job...or get serious about some hardcore yoga & come join me for an afternoon you’ll not soon forget!” NOTE: NO non-consensual licking occured during the creation of this ad & if you’re still reading this, you might want to apply?
Just a thought.
Everyone has vices. With your willpower and determination, you could ditch yours—if you chose to. What’s missing is a reason. After all, you can handle them, and even though you know that you’re not necessarily making the healthiest choices 100% of the time, what you’re up to isn’t all that bad, in the grand scheme of things. Unless someone could point to something amazing that you’re missing out on because of the choices you make, you’re not likely to unlearn those “bad” habits any time soon. However, if you ask someone you know to give you good reason to move on this week, they will.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
I know you’re reluctant to take control of the situation, as you’ve already got a lot on your plate, but this week it’s likely to become apparent that you have to anyway. Without your intervention, it will either fall apart entirely, or end up a disaster. I know it’s frustrating to not have people you can rely on in this case, but don’t let the principle of the thing keep you from doing what you have to do to make it come off a success. You can go ahead and tear people apart (or quietly find replacements) afterwards. For now, make this shit happen. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) When forced to sing for your supper, you can usually deliver. Even though you dread like the plague being put on the spot, you nearly always come through when it actually happens. Perhaps it’s time to become less fearful of this, and stop doing your best to avoid any situation where it might occur? We can both agree that it’s less than ideal. However, can you see that sometimes, despite that, it leads to amazing opportunities and adventures (and yes, sometimes just a hassle)? It’s worth going there in any case, whenever you can stand to, especially right now.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
You are so impetuous and flexible that a lot of people get the impression that you’re also fickle and flaky. While some Aries are indeed those things, most are actually quite loyal and steadfast, if easily distracted in the moment. Ultimately your ideal partner will be entertained and inspired by these rapid shifts and not disturbed by them, and they’ll trust you enough to know that you’ll be back by their side before they’ve even had a chance to miss you. If whoever you’re currently hanging with can’t do that, it’s a good week to decide if they just need time to get there, or if they never really will. Once you know that, you’ll also know what to do next.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
One of my favorite columnists says that every relationship fails until one doesn’t. This simple truth can keep people from telling themselves the story that they suck at relationships and will never have one that works. While it’s useful to look at yourself (because you really might suck at relationships), it’s not useful to believe that you’ll never get into a more or less healthy, happy relationship—that can all too easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Look at yourself critically, and be the best person you can be, but this week be sure you’re not actually being too harsh, or sabotaging yourself. Remember this: Your own self-judgments and sabotage are much more likely to hold you back than your actual flaws.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
Don’t paint meanness as a virtue. Sure, you might get a laugh now and again if your nastiness is clever enough, but if you can’t see the virtue of avoiding hurting people when you can, there’s something wrong. It’s very easy for those with sly wit to develop a habit of subtly or blatantly putting down others, just to get a laugh or artificially elevate themselves. What’s even worse is when they mock people who are obviously wounded by it. While most Geminis I’ve known are generally sweet and generous people, I’ve met a few who make a practice of verbally demolishing everyone in sight. I don’t know if they end up unhappy and alone, but a part of me hopes so. Please make sure you’re not one of them?
