Farmers, Fish & Unflushable Orly HYPER LOCAL Despite increasing public outcry, it looks like the County is sticking to its guns regarding Halloween in Lahaina. Their position, as explained to me by public information officer Mahina Martin last month, is to treat the annual bash as a “non-event” since no one pulled a permit. That means the street will be open to traffic and there won’t be any central organization for things like floodlights and portable toilets. I’ve been inundated with e-mails from partygoers worried the county’s hands-off approach could spell disaster; solutions proposed range from the dramatic (everyone step into the street at once at a pre-determined moment and see if the cops start cracking skulls) to the optimistic (asking drivers to voluntarily avoid Front Street). If everything shakes down like last year—which is what Martin told me they’re anticipating—the event will be an anticlimactic headache and nothing more. But in the absence of oversight, the likelihood of problems undeniably increases. We’ll see…. More than a week after the Hawaii Supreme Court ruled Councilmember Sol Kaho‘ohalahala is a resident of Lahaina and not Lanai where he serves, the ramifications of the decision remain unclear; the only certainty is this saga will have more twists and turns before it’s done. If, in the end, the ruling means Kaho‘ohalahala can’t serve on the Council, that may be a fair outcome (if he truly hasn’t established a permanent residence on Lanai; he does have a family home there). But it would also cost Maui an even-handed, generally principled politician, a rare commodity indeed… This week’s Rob Report (page 6) examines an effort by the Maui County Real Property Tax (RPT) office to force farmers to prove their land is being used for agriculture or face steep, possibly retroactive tax hikes. The result could be disastrous for small farms or those growing mostly for personal use, effectively discouraging local food production at

a time when we should be doing the exact opposite. The goal, of course, is to raise revenue. Here’s a better place to start: as reported in this space, in an effort to strike

Ask him about Afghanistan.

shame into the hearts of tax evaders, RPT has posted a list of the top 25 delinquent accounts on the County’s Web site (co. maui.hi.us). If RPT channeled its efforts into collecting on the top 10 accounts, the result would an influx of more than $1 million. Point being, maybe we should target the scofflaws before we go after the farmers….

LOCAL Hey, speaking of Rob (who’s getting his strokes for the month here), he’s quoted in an AP story about Hawaii Oceanic Technology, a Honolulu company that’s been given approval to launch a “tuna farm” off the Big Island. Here’s the relevant bit: “The project won’t be sustainable if it imports its feed and exports about 90 percent of its product, said Rob Parsons, a board member of the environmentalist group Maui Tomorrow. The venture looks like it will suffer from the same pollution and disease problems as cattle farms, he

said. “This is not a farm,” Parsons said. “It’s an industrial feed lot.”…

NOT LOCAL Though many still regard our military entanglement in Afghanistan as that other war, U.S. troops are dying there at an accelerating rate. In fact, with 55 American casualties to date, October 2009 is the deadliest month in the war’s eight-year history. Tucked into the various media accounts was this interesting tidbit: three of the fallen soldiers weren’t soldiers at all, but DEA agents sent over to tackle the opium trade that funds the Taliban. So now we’ve married the War on Terror with the War on Drugs, and have picked as the central staging ground a country affectionately dubbed “the graveyard of empires” (just ask the Soviets, the British and the Romans). Good thing our President is a Nobel Peace Prize-winner…. You know when you flush your business but it won’t to go quietly, and you’re forced to wait for the toilet tank to refill, flush again, then cry out in frustration when the defiant little bastard bobs back to the surface? I propose a new name for those gravity-defying turds: Orly Taitz. As in, “Man, I had the worst Orly Taitz this morning—I was stuck in the bathroom so long I was late for work!” If the name sounds familiar, it’s because it belongs to the leader of the “birther” movement, the group of “concerned” citizens (and by “concerned” I mean bat-guano crazy) that’s convinced Obama’s Hawaii birth certificate is a fake and that he is in fact foreign born and thus ineligible to be president. Like the buoyant bits of excrement that bear her name, Orly refuses to stay down. Despite being hit with a $20,000 sanction by a Georgia judge earlier this month for conduct that “borders on delusional,” Taitz is keeping up the fight—one of her e-mails landed in my inbox this morning, an oasis of insanity amidst a sea of dry government press releases. Here’s a thought: what if, with her blinding platinum hair and ambiguous accent, Orly is actually a subversive comic in the Andy Kaufman/Sacha Baron Cohen vein, performing an elaborate bit satirizing right-wing conspiracy nuts? That would be awesome, but I’m putting my money on the unflushable poop hypothesis. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/coconut15

Deere John Letter Real Property Tax office tells ag owners to justify farm use or lose tax rate

I

n an apparent effort to collect revenues in the face of a lean fiscal year, the Maui County Real Property Tax (RPT) office sent letters to thousands of ag owners over the past two months, seeking proof of farming activities. The notice requires property owners to file a Request For Agriculture Use Valuation form within 30 days, or risk losing their ag use assessment, which “may result in a substantial difference in your real property taxes.” While there are a number of unanswered questions raised by the letter and accompanying forms linked on the RPT Web site, many owners see the measure as poorly conceived and draconian. “This is huge—way bigger than TVRs [transient vacation rentals],” said a farmer who asked to remain anonymous. “I could lose the farm over this, but someone with a lot of money can put up a fence and bring in one cow and they are in compliance.” Kalbert Young, Director of Finance (which oversees the RPT office) said the ag verification collection program is intended to identify compliance with County code. “If you’re doing ag,” said Young, “be prepared and submit proof. If you’re not doing ag... then you shouldn’t receive the benefit.” The letter states, “As part of our ongoing efforts to uniformly and equitably assess property at fair market value, the Real Property Tax Division is requiring that you file for the agricultural activity on this parcel.” A three-sentence agricultural use definition is referenced, from the rules

and regulations of the Director of Finance, “relating to assessment of agricultural lands under Maui County Code Section 3.48.325.” That link leads to a section titled, “Deferred or roll back tax,” which explains that if the property is taken out of ag designation and placed in a higher use category, a tax may be assessed retroactively, “provided the retroactive period should not exceed ten years.” An Upcountry farmer told me he was in the middle of filling out his paperwork and providing photos. “They’re trying to extract money from a lot of innocent people by raising their taxes 500 percent,” he said, adding that more than half of his land is in fruit and vegetable production. “Marginal users will have a hard time. The paperwork said if you’re growing for your own consumption, that’s not good enough.”

T

he letter quotes the Finance Director’s rules, stating that agricultural use “does not include nor apply to areas…associated with residential use planted with fruit and ornamental trees, flowers and vegetables primarily for home use.” Former Planning Director Mike Foley believes the letter is aimed at “two-acre parcels with no ag use whatsoever.” He proposes developing legitimate standards to describe ag activities, as there are many variables. “How suitable is a particular area to ag?” Foley asked. “Does it have adequate water? Good soil? Gulches?” An Olinda resident told me she hadn’t

received “the letter,” but neighbors on both sides of her had. “The County may be ripe for a lawsuit, maybe a class action case,” she said. “Who’s making the rules? Has there been a community review of the rules if they are changing?”

responded, “The ordinance is not specific, but previous rules of thumb was at least 50 percent in use. It would be up to the appraiser and field inspection if not obvious.” One grower told me he intensively farms two acres of a larger leased parcel, for

“This is huge—way bigger than TVRs,” said one farmer. Past Mayor and Councilmember Alan Arakawa concurred. “I’m concerned that this is all being done administratively,” said Arakawa. “There has been no public hearing, and no public discussion.” Arakawa said when he was on Council, they began discussions of what constituted agricultural use. After being elected Mayor, he tasked the Maui County Farm Bureau with arriving at a definition. After two years, the farm bureau committee provided a draft, which Arakawa sent to the Council. “Council never did anything to finalize and codify the process,” Arakawa said. “Past practices and court decisions haven’t defined farming the way it is being used here. They may find they have conflicts with the definitions in our state laws. Beyond that, they are remiss in taking a proactive approach to helping and encouraging people to do farming.” Responding to a list of e-mail questions, Gery Madriaga of the Real Property Tax office said approximately 6,800 letters were mailed out. Asked what percentage of a property would need to be in ag use to qualify, he

which he receives an exemption. “Now they want to limit my exemption to just the two acres,” he exclaimed, “and have me pay a full rate on the rest. I might lose the farm!” Both Madriga and RPT staffer Scott Teruya served on the MCFB committee that sent the draft definition of ag to Council for discussion. But no revised standards were set. “The updated valuations will be using the current ordinances and rules,” Madriaga wrote. William Jacintho of the Maui Cattleman’s Association contacted the office and helped set up an informational workshop to assist the public. Working also with Kula Community Association, Jacintho scheduled the workshop for Monday, November 9, at 8:30am at the Pukalani Community Center. Jacintho, who also served on the ag definition committee, said sometimes a one-size-fits-all approach isn’t ideal. “You try to catch some kind of fish, and you catch a lot of others, too.” ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/rr15

XTERRA Curricular Fear, loathing and amazing athletes at annual Makena race “I am a writing fool with a charming smile and a total-access Press pass.” - Hunter S. Thompson, Hey Rube, “Madness in Honolulu,” December 13, 2001

I

t’s a few minutes past 8am, Sunday. The banner strung out in front of the Makena Beach and Golf Resort has shiny new vinyl script reading “formerly,” applied to the corner of a pre-existing and faded-by-comparison whale tail logo and text that says “Maui Prince Hotel”— evidence of the transition still taking place since Benchmark Hospitality International took over management of the foundering resort in September. What else would you have me do with my

It’s painful to watch. Some appear more experienced and navigate their way onto dry tufts of grass that hold traction better than the loose lava rocks in the fine, dry dirt. Others slip and fall immediately as they hit the hill, toppling over sideways and blocking, to shouting dismay, the athletes behind them. Some see the hopelessness of the situation and give in quickly, hefting their bikes onto their backs and running up the hill instead. When the first few women cross our paths—including England’s Julie Dibens—I hear, “Media!” shouted once more and everyone comes barreling down the hill, serious-faced, back into the vans and off to our next photo-op position.

of a hillside. XTERRA VP Trey Garman points me toward the beach, where the race will commence with a 1.5-kilometer (1 mile) swim. “As soon as you see the first of the men get out of the water,” he says, “you’ve gotta run up to the parking lot.” There, press vans will be waiting to whisk us off to follow the Race Leaders on their arduous journey, as they tackle a 32-kilometer (20 mile) mountain bike trail, followed by a 12-kilometer (7.5 mile) trail run through the “Spooky Forest.” I could pass out and die just thinking about it. With nearly 45 minutes left until race time, I mosey about, looking smug with my shining Press pass that allows me to go wherever I damned-well please. Competitors are getting PHOTO BY NILS NILSEN

Painful just watching.

Sunday morning? I’m a Kansas City Chiefs fan. Yes sir, let me repeat that: a Chiefs fan. So. I could either wrestle my aching bones out of bed in the early darkness, hunker down at the Ale House to watch those Poor Bastards endure a 30-point loss to the San Diego Chargers and meanwhile suck down a couple pints of Sierra Nevada and half a pack of Smokes. Or, I could ride along in an air-conditioned press van with photographers and TV crews from around the world, at the prestigious 14th annual XTERRA World Championship in Makena. Ho ho. (Speaking of Smokes, I decided to do without them. I am about to be around scores of Healthy people and want to skirt dirty looks.) The police officer checking in cars at the entrance glances at my Haiku-mold covered Toyota and inquires as to my business. Satisfied with my response, he shouts to his counterpart, “Media!” I’ve been concerned for the last hour that I’m late, but as it turns out I’m a little early. I meander through the landscaped grounds to a mass of white tents and spot a stunning Sea of mountain bikes aligned at the bottom

inked up with their numbers—big greasy black letters carefully penned onto their biceps and calves and neat red and white waterproof stamps of the XTERRRA logo. After a painful rendition of the “The Star Spangled Banner” and much todo (in several languages) trying to get the hundreds of yellow swim-capped competitors out of the water, the starting gun booms. Startled, I yelp and run away, unsure exactly how long it takes a worldclass champion tri-athlete to swim 1-mile, but sure it’s comparable to how long it’ll take me to hoof it back to the parking lot. Estimating correctly, I make it to the van in the nick of time. The first stop is “Heartbreak Hill,” which I can attest is barely navigable by foot. The cameramen take their positions and we crouch amidst the dust and keawe spikes, awaiting the first athletes. A chopper filming a syndicated show due out next year can be heard overhead, nearing our position and signaling that the leaders must be close. There’s a shout from below and from around the corner come the first contenders.

I

t’s hot. My phone is out of service and rapidly losing its charge. Enviously I spy other reporters’ notebooks and their carefully penned notes. Mine are getting sloppier, the pages rippling with sweat from my sticky hands. By the time we reach the 15-mile marker at “Watertank,” the athletes are caked with dirt—weird, thick black liner contrasting against bloodshot skin, like creepy face paint. Richard Ussher of New Zealand has lost his bike seat, and I fear for his Manhood as it hovers above what is now just a metal spike. The helicopter again swoops low, stirring up even more dust, and the exhaust of ATVs and dirt bikes carrying medics and more camera crewmembers is making me impossibly lightheaded. As if in a cave, I hear the echoed shouts of, “Media!” and, relieved, I slide into my cool center seat in the van, off to “Spooky Forest” and the finish line. There’s a roar as the first man approaches: now third-time winner Eneko Llanos of Spain, clocking in at 2 hours, 37.22 seconds (Dibens will take her third consecutive wahine win, clocking in at 2 hours, 56 minutes and 42 seconds). I lift my iPhone to snap a photo, and just as Llanoa approaches, the screen goes dead black. Moments later, I find myself face-to-face with the Spaniard, a mere foot separating his wraparound sunglasses and my Tommy Bahama movie star goggles. Head spinning, I pretend to take photos with my dead phone, and inch away slowly as attendants shout for water. Time to hit the buffet—and maybe grab a Smoke. ■

LCWATCH THE FIVE SCARIEST LC OFFICIALS 1. Director Frank Silva – The obvious choice, Silva heads up the department and embodies its capricious philosophy. Plus, he once used the “I know it when I see it” defense with a straight face. 2. Chief Enforcement Officer Bill Pacheco – The strong, silent type, Pacheco rarely speaks at meetings except the part at the beginning where everyone goes around and says their name like the first day of school. He’s also in charge Donald Fujii of the boots on the ground, which is where a lot of trouble arises. 3. Adjudication Board Chair Donald Fujii – Fujii is actually a pretty levelheaded, soft-spoken guy, who frequently tries to calm down his more strident colleagues. He also uttered one of the biggest whoppers ever told in the LC’s chambers when he informed the manager of an establishment brought up on minor decoy charges that the board isn’t “in the business of closing anybody at any time.” 4. Commission member Arsene “Blackie” Gadarian – As this column has noted before, Gadarian is always good for a quote—but the quotes aren’t always good. Like in 2007, when he told Maui Dance Advocates—a grassroots group comprised of two young men, one of whom is wheelchair-bound—that they could “find another island” if they didn’t like the LC’s ridiculous, antiquated dancing rules. 5. Adjudication Board member Joe Tanaka – Never afraid to speak up even when he has nothing to say, Tanaka has shown a consistent, almost willfull ignorance of the substance he’s tasked with regulating, frequently asking cringe-inducing questions like whether Jagermeister contains alcohol (which he’s done at least twice in LC Watch history). ■ – Jacob Shafer To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/lc15

CELEBELLUM The human brain’s 100 billion neurons may have such specific functions that a few electrically charge only upon recognition of a single celebrity, such as Oprah Winfrey or Bill Clinton. UCLA researchers, studying the healthy cells of pre-op epilepsy patients, inadvertently discovered this unusual property, which apparently varies with individuals but remains internally consistent, whether the celebrity is represented by picture, name or sound. Patients were presented “hundreds of stimuli, one researcher told The Wall Street Journal in October, but “the neuron would respond to only one or two. For example, neurons were found that reacted only to Jennifer Aniston, only to The Simpsons and only to Mother Teresa.

TED WRONG In 2002, following an acrimonious family debate, the head of late baseball slugger Ted Williams was cryogenically frozen in the hope that science will some day learn how to revive dead people. An employee of the Arizona lab that stores the head recently disclosed some inside shenanigans, according to a September report in the New York Daily News. According to the employee, to keep Williams’ head from sticking to the inside of its storage carton, the head was placed on an empty Bumble Bee tuna fish can inside the container, but the can itself then stuck to the head and had to be whacked off with a monkey wrench. (Since the lab’s work is secretive, only first-person reports are likely to emerge on this story.)

ONE-WAY COMMUNICATION The mayor of the Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret, faced with an overcrowded highway D909 through town, “solved the problem recently by making the street one-way, sending traffic speedily into the adjacent town of Clichy-la-Garenne. That city’s mayor (a political rival of the Levallois-Perret mayor) reacted by making his portion of D909 one-way back toward LevalloisPerret, creating a dilemma at the city limit. Other authorities are working to resolve the impasse.

DIRTY COPS In the tiny east Texas town of Tenaha, police allegedly extorted traveling motorists by subjecting them to bogus traffic stops, perhaps finding small amounts of drugs, and then offering to forgo prosecution if the motorists would forfeit their cars and other property. The forfeited items were then sold to fund a special police recreation account. Last year, the ACLU of Texas filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against both the police and local prosecutor Lynda Russell, and in September 2009 Russell asked the state attorney general if she could pay her legal expenses from the alleged extorted recreation account.

DICKING AROUND (1) In a delicate, two-hour procedure at a hospital in Newport Beach, Calif., in September, firefighters carefully sawed off the inch-thick metal dumbbelltightening ring into which a man had inserted his penis three days earlier. He told surgeons his plan was to lengthen the organ, to, as he put it, “make me the chief of my tribe.â€? By the time he got to the hospital, his member was swollen to more than twice its normal size, and sawing the ring off (without cutting the skin) was the only way to save it. (2) Judge James Morley dismissed animal cruelty charges in September against former Moorestown, N.J., police officer Robert Melia Jr., who had been caught in 2006 attempting to sexually gratify himself using calves’ mouths. Because the state has no anti-bestiality statute, Melia was charged with animal cruelty, but Judge Morley said he was uncertain whether the acts were “cruelâ€? or merely confusing. He reasoned that calves would normally recognize an appendage in their mouths as the prelude to food. If the calf could speak, said Judge Morley, it might merely say, “Where’s the milk? I’m not getting any milk.â€? â–

To Ebay founder Pierre Omidyar, for giving Hawaii a much-needed windfall. This week, Omidyar, who attended middle school on Oahu and lives there with his wife Pam, donated $50 million to the Hawaii Community Foundation, an organization that provides grants to local nonprofits. Of course, massive acts of philanthropy come a little easier when you’re number 40 on Forbes’ list of the richest people on Earth, but generosity is generosity—and we could use more of it.

To the American Red Cross, for lending a helping hand to Mauians in need. After a Kihei house fire left six people homeless earlier this week, the Red Cross stepped in, providing food, temporary housing and other necessities. A secondary plug to the firefighters who contained the blaze, and maybe a tertiary plug for you, if you visit hawaiiredcross.org and pitch in.

To Eha’s Pool Bar, for using rock to raise funds. With the help of sundry local musicians including Bad Kitty, Erin Smith and Mojomana, the Kahului watering hole pulled in $1,300 for breast cancer research during a weekendspanning event earlier this month. For those scoffing at the relatively modest total: first, every bit helps; second, when was the last time you heard of a dive bar (and we use that term in the most affectionate sense possible) doing something altruistic?

To Hawaii diners, for being bad tippers. According to the results of a recent Zagat survey, Hawaii ranked at the bottom of the heap nationwide, with an average gratuity of 18.4 percent. (The best tipping spots topped out at 19.6 percent, so the disparity wasn’t too extreme, though anyone who’s ever carried trays knows that extra 1.4 percent makes a difference.) It’s possible some of the blame can be assigned to stingy visitors; Zagat doesn’t specifically say it polled only residents. But odds are we all played a part. What this really means is that Hawaii’s number one in another category: pissed off servers.

QUOTE ADJUSTMENT

Does your “Irritable Bowels…” blurb in News of the Weird [October 22], which mentions the suicide bomber that shoved one up his butt (and how the TSA doesn’t quite know what to make of it), suggest that we’ll now all have to bend over and spread ’em as part of our air travel security measures from now on?

etc.—all of which science disproves; and 2) that a Godman named Jesus walked the earth, a story unsupported by historical artifacts. Other than the Bible and derived religious writings, there is no mention of a man capable of performing the most astounding feats known to civilization, such as walking on water, healing lepers, or causing the blind to see. History documents a King Herod who was, by accounts, a good and wise ruler, but he died two years before Jesus was said to be born and there is no historical record of him ordering the slaughter of thousands of infants. In fact, what comparative mythologists have established through artifacts like the Rosetta Stone is that Christianity has its roots in pagan religions. For example, there were over 50 “saviors” centuries before Jesus who were recorded to be born of virgins, sent to save mankind, crucified and resurrected. One need only look at the earlier tales of Horus, Krishna, Mithra, Promethius and Buddha for scores of parallels to the Jesus story. It should therefore come as no surprise that, other than breeding and indoctrinating the resultant youth, the only option left to gain believers into the Christian flock is through coercion, i.e. praying on man’s fear of the unknown with threats of hell.

I was recently quoted in the article “The Plantation & The People” [October 22]. I think Maui Time did an excellent job covering the tone and feel of the night. I was, however, slightly misquoted. The article read: “Eliza Goodhue said her grandmother fought for water rights in New England many years ago. ‘We need a consciousness change about water,’ she said.” I believe what I said was, “We are currently experiencing a change in consciousness about water.” Because we are. We have a choice to see the gross injustice and abuse of water rights, to recognize the current needs of our Maui community and also to move forward with a perspective of balance. Because there is enough water for us all. And, as I said that evening, our children and grandchildren will thank us for the choices that we make now.

2. Lt. Gov. James “Duke” Aiona

LT.GOV.

AIONA

– As he steamrolls essentially unchallenged toward his party’s gubernatorial nomination, the scariest thing about Lt. Gov. Aiona is summed up in a blurb on his campaign Web site: “Duke Aiona’s role as Lt. Governor is unprecedented in the history of Hawai‘i. Never before has a Lt. Governor been so involved in the critical decisions that shape our state.” Whether any of the men vying to replace Gov. Lingle will rise to the state’s myriad challenges is an open question, but one thing is certain: a continuation of the last eight years would be nothing less than self-sabotage. Yet despite their allegedly cozy relationship, Aiona isn’t some faceless Lingle clone—he’s more dangerous than that. A man who wears his religion proudly on his sleeve (in 2004 he reportedly told a prayer group that “Hawaii belongs to Jesus”), Aiona led the charge against same-sex civil union bill HB444 and called its defeat “a victory for traditional marriage.” (Lingle stayed curiously silent on the issue.) Along with state Republican Party Chair Jonah Kaauwai (who wrote in a January e-mail to supporters that “God imparted that my ministry is politics,” according to an AP dispatch), Aiona is part of a zealous rightward shift in the Hawaii GOP aimed at spinning the support of religious groups into election gold. Time will tell how effective that strategy is, but it should give pause to both the secular community and moderate people of faith who respect the separation of church and state.

3. Rep. Kyle Yamashita

4. Rep. Joe Souki – Like his legislative colleague, Souki’s loyalty is clearly for sale. A recent, egregious example: at an October 12 meeting of the Council’s Infrastructure Management Committee, Souki spoke against a proposed countywide ban on Styrofoam takeout JOE “SUC containers. During his KS-A-LOT ” remarks, he made it clear he wasn’t speaking as a civil servant from Maui’s 8th District, but rather on behalf of the American Chemistry Council, a lobby organization whose member companies include, among others, Monsanto, Dow, DuPont and Big Oil. That Souki would so publicly and unabashedly acknowledge his divided allegiance reveals two things: 1) most of Hawaii’s old guard Democrat legislators (because Souki and Yamashita are merely the tip of the iceberg) are bought-and-sold-and-bought-again; and 2) they’re so confident we don’t care, they’ll openly flaunt it and still expect to be rubber-stamped back into office when the next election rolls around, provided they pepper the neighborhood with glossy pamphlets (or sponges in Souki’s case) and fake-grin their way though a few signwaving sessions. The really tragic part? They’re right.

REP.

6. Councilmember Mike Molina – In an August 2002 cover story, we posed the question: who’s pulling Molina’s strings? At the time the Councilmember was embroiled in a scandal involving the rezoning of Makena Resort. Molina owned a 12.9-acre parcel of land near the site of the controversial development, a fact he failed MBER to disclose until he was taken COUNMCIKILE “IMGEOR” to task on an Akaku callin show. (His excuse? He forgot.) The Board of Ethics initially ruled Molina had to recuse himself from the Makena vote, but later reversed its decision after a report commissioned by Molina concluded he didn’t stand to benefit from the rezoning. (Who exactly footed the bill for the report was mystery.) Of course, seven years later we all know the fate of the Makena development—what was once touted as a boon for the island has turned out to be a bust for all involved. But time hasn’t changed Molina—he’s still a consistent pro-development vote, still a symbol of the Council contingency that backs big business and big bucks (especially when some of those bucks land in his campaign coffers) at every turn. As to who’s pulling his strings? The only clear answer is: not you and me.

LINGLE 5. Gov. Linda Lingle – It’s hard to say if being a lame duck makes Gov. Lingle more or less scary. On the one hand, her two-term reign— defined by colossal missteps (cough, Superferry) for which she still refuses to take responsibility and a well-earned reputation for vindictiveness—is near its end and her never-cordial relationship with the legislature has been strained past the breaking point, isolating her even further (and adding a crap-coated cherry to the top of the dysfunctional dung heap that is Hawaii’s state government). On the other hand, the former Maui Councilmember and Mayor has ample opportunity to exact more damage—or at least stall progress—as she casts her gaze toward the next rung on the ladder: a U.S. Senate seat. Now that’s frightening.

– The title Representative Kyle Yamashita is a bit misleading. Not the “Kyle Yamashita” part—that’s his real name (as far as we know). It’s the word “Representative” where the trouble begins. It suggests Yamashita represents his constituents, the voters of Maui’s 12th District, who elected him in 2004 and reelected him last year. But his campaign spending reports tell a different story. Yamashita’s most recent filing with the state Campaign Spending Commission reveals that, in January, he had to return checks totaling $2,300 from Wal-Mart and Virginia-based Altria Client Services because he was over the limit for nonresident contributions. Meanwhile, of the nearly $7,000 he raised during the reporting period, less than $1,000 came from Maui and none from his district. That’s right—not a single penny from the people he’s supposed to fight for, but so much from outside sources that he had to give some of it back. There’s blatant, there’s painfully blatant and then there’s that.

CWOUNCILME AYNE “T MBER HE LUG ”

NISHIKI

7. Councilmember Wayne Nishiki

– To his credit, since returning to the County Council after a term limit-induced hiatus, Wayne Nishiki has been Wayne Nishiki—a shoot-from-the-hip contrarian and a vocal environmental and cultural advocate who’s unafraid to court controversy (see the flap over the upside-down Hawaiian flag he displays in the council chambers to symbolize, as he wrote in a Maui News op-ed, that the “Hawaiians are a people in distress”). Even if you disagree with Nishiki on the issues, his views and values set him apart on a Council well stocked with business-as-usual stooges (see number 6 on our list). But there is a dark cloud hanging over the South Maui Councilmember: the $100,000 personal loan he accepted from developer Everett Dowling while out of office, a loan he failed to disclose until months after the deadline and has yet to pay back (despite assuring us in November 2008 that he would do “everything in his power” to repay the money). This really comes down to transparency and integrity. If Nishiki runs for reelection, he won’t be able to paint himself as fiercely independent and untainted by developer dollars. Which begs the question: if he isn’t those things, what is he? ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/feature15

Casanova’s New House Famed Upcountry eatery branches out into Central Maui Bistro Casanova 33 Lono Ave. Ste. 150, Kahului, 873-3650 Tues.-Sat. 11am-close; Mon. lunch only

I

'm surprised it didn't occur to me sooner that central Maui lacks filet mignon. Yet another reason to love the arrival of Bistro Casanova, the new Kahului venture from seasoned Maui restauranteur Giovanni Steven Cappelli. Steven deflects credit from himself and heaps it on his experienced crew, the same one that helped maintain his award-winning Upcountry Italian restaurant and bar. The new eatery boasts an array of Casanova Makawao ex-pats, including Executive Chef David Gemberling and manager Jean Francois Lefevre. When I ask Steven about Casanova Bistro he muses, “I only create the spaces, it's what the community does with it that really makes it something.” If you're expecting a reincarnation of the Upcountry Casanova, clear your mind and your palate—Bistro Casanova has its own distinct personality and flavor. The restaurant is appointed in shades of blue, with dark wood furniture that, along with the driftwood art installation by Piero Resta and blue sky frescos on the ceiling, lend the place a nautical vibe. There's a lot of diversity packed into the evening menu. Carafes (La Caraffa $10) of wine (or margaritas or mojitos) and a tapas ($5-9) menu make it ideal for a casual gathering of friends pre- or post-show. Of course you'll find Italian favorites: a list

of pastas including ncluding the Linguine ne al Funghi, a wild mushroom m in cream sauce ce ($12), and d the meaty Tagliatelle alla Bolognese ($14). Butt what you don't expect ct is the infusion off Spanish, Mediterranean and French cuisines. Duck graces the menu, from the Quawck Salad ($12) to a rich roasted leg of duck in the Duck Confit ($20). Some friends nearby had the Paella ($28), which serves two, and admitted the flavors were exactly like what they had in Spain. Start with The Antipasto di Mare ($14) a fresh mix of succulent chilled seafood: scallops, shrimp, mussels, calamari and clams tossed in olive oil with tomatoes, greens and capers. Every bite was amazing, the light dressing and fresh seafood a refreshing change from the usual fried seafood starters. The menu also contains an array of mouth-watering steaks, including the aforementioned filet mingnon. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/dining15

Perfectly Marvelous Go ahead and tell Mama, Cabaret couldn’t please me more the working boys and girls of the Kit Kat Klub (many of the women are real-life burlesque performers from Maui’s own Kit Kat Club Cabaret), who—though abundantly vivacious and enviously seductive—convey the sort of ho-hum laziness of their age-old occupation. Dressed in monochromatically cream-colored, period-styled lingerie, the girls communicate something that is strangely innocent, despite their numbers’ (and the show’s) ultraprovocative nature. As entertaining as their commendably bold dancing might be, it’s not until the second song, “So What?”—the delightfully comedic introduction to boardinghouse owner Fraulein Schneider, and a continuation of our first-look at the character of American author, Cliff Bradshaw—does it become apparent that this Professional Artists of the Pacific LLC production is a theatrical treat not often found in the local scene. As the judiciously hip, world-wise Schneider, Rose Roselinsky’s is a pitchperfect powerhouse. Her inflections and gestures are so well-timed, I’m effortlessly drawn into her portrayal; it’s because of her that I first suspend my disbelief and am transported completely to Berlin’s heyday, on the cusp of the Nazis rise to power. Dale Button is equally fantastic as Herr Schultz, the German-born but markedly Jewish fruit shop owner, and Schneider’s love interest. I’m tearfully lost in the pure adoration he paints on his face, as he patiently woos Schneider with oranges and an exotic pineapple. Together, Roselinsky and Button are a pairing whose talent makes ripe all the sweetness of their character’s late-in-life love.

But the primary romance in Cabaret circles around Bradshaw and the wistful, English bombshell, Sally Bowles. Perhaps it’s because he plays a writer and his cast bio first lists him as a physicist, but I find E. John Messersmith to be remarkably handsome, and though occasionally dry, an absolutely perfect fit as Bradshaw. His handsomeness is fortunate indeed as he’s paired with Lynnea Barry as Bowles—a Go for the drama, stay for the hot chicks. flawless stunner who nails every note with her out the couple dollars extra for center-section Broadway-worthy pipes seating. Otherwise, you’ll be regretfully and seems to emote the Bowles character out of view of the one of the show’s most from the very tips of her toes to the ends of substantiating features—the 6-piece orchestra. every platinum lock. Though hidden but for the first few Jonathan Lehman, helming his third moments, before the curtain parts, led by production of Cabaret since 1976, again keyboardist Marti Kluth, the band is as proves his directorial tenacity, and assembles mesmerizing to watch as the cast members a team that executes his vision impeccably. themselves. As they continue to play while Also noteworthy are the play’s visual you stand to applaud the finale, long after the elements—the costuming in particular is characters have left the stage and the house both cleverly multi-purpose and surprisingly lights again rise, you’ll be cheering just as ever-changing. Shifts in the color palate— much for their superb performance—one which transitions just before intermission, more first-rate element added to a show that then powerfully in the second-half—provide has the whole kit kat and caboodle. ■ strong parallels to the plot arc. eated in the tight, ascending rows of black canvas director’s chairs in the Steppingstone Playhouse, audience members await mostly in silence in the final moments before showtime. As the house lights fall, the superbly costumed geisha-maiden attending the corner concession stand quickly closes shop, and up strikes the ambient acoustics of live music—trumpeting, still hidden, from behind the curtain. From the velvet divide, out pops a leathersleeved arm—fingers writhing, beckoning come-hither. Thus, to the audience’s delighted squeals, is our wilkkommen to Cabaret. Act One launches with the lively number “Wilkkommen,” through which we’re introduced to our insightful host for the evening, played by Tom Althouse, appositely named the Master of Ceremonies. Wiry and wild-eyed, Althouse forgoes the ostentatious makeup his character is associated with (in other productions, and notably with the 1972 film version that earned Liza Minelli an Oscar for Best Actress and Best Director for Bob Fosse), and I’m thankful for it. His mischievous expressions are unmasked, and I can more readily appreciate the raw sparkle he infuses into the character. Althouse is more than a host: he’s a guide that transcends the boundaries between the play’s four 1931 Berlin settings—the secondrate Kit Kat Klub, a railway carriage, a welllocated boardinghouse and a Jewish-owned fruit shop—and it’s through him the audience discovers allusions to character development and the heavy Third Reich subtext, which won’t mature until later in the play. The opening number also introduces us to

‘Saw’ it all before Sixth time ain’t the charm for self-parodying horror franchise Saw VI

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ (zero stars)

Kinda like watching 'Saw VI.'

Rated R/90 min.

A

t the beginning of Saw VI, the plans of the late serial killer Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) are being carried out by a corrupt cop, played by Costas Mandylor, who traps Jigsaw’s intended victims, shackles them to torture devices and makes them spend the last moments of their life suffering as they attempt to free themselves. Now, I’m willing to believe a lot of things in movies, like talking robots from space, for example, but here’s something I’ll never buy: that Mandylor is running this operation, at an abandoned zoo, almost entirely by himself. The torture chambers are as elaborate as a ride at Disneyland, with metal clamps, electricity, TV monitors, puppetry, cages, scaffolding, steam and acid containers, all working simultaneously and supposedly overseen by a guy who looks like he couldn’t program his Tivo.

18 October 29, 2009

One torture device involves a child’s playground carousal—how the heck did

they sneak that into the zoo? Did they hire a delivery truck? Wouldn’t that make people suspicious? Yes, put the carousal over there. No, the zoo is empty. The screams you hear? Those are, um, the monkeys that got left behind. I hate to break it to Saw fans, but this latest sequel is an unintentional self-parody, disgusting and laughable. I was a longtime fan of the Jason Voorhees installments, so I know the pain of being faithful to a horror movie franchise, even as it devolves into a joke. Despite his character’s death three movies back, Bell returns as the murderous Jigsaw. He has the grave presence of a cult leader and is an actor who gives the part all he’s got, but he’s doing the same psychopathas-twisted-moralizer bit that Kevin Spacey nailed as John Doe in Seven. Jigsaw’s targets are mostly health insurance companies and loan officers, and the screenwriters have made the character a soapbox-straddling bore. It’s one thing to hear Michael Moore give a long-winded speech about the difference between health care in America

and Europe, but Jigsaw? The rest of the cast is collection of B-movie actors and one-time TV stars. I’m happy to see New Kids on the Block member Donnie Wahlberg has escaped this series (he starred in parts 2-4) but the bizarre additions in his place are George Newbern, the groom of the Father of the Bride movies, and Darius McCrary, one of the kids from Family Matters. Urkel and Punky Brewster, take note—if you can’t find work, there’s always a role for you in Saw VII. The strobe light-style editing would give Michael Bay a seizure and, while the multiple flashbacks will keep fans and non-fans up to speed with the overcomplicated plot. One hilariously idiotic touch is showing a flashback to a scene that happened just five minutes ago, as if we’d forget a woman chopping off her own arm with an axe. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/film15

Maui Film Festival Candlelight Cinema Will return with the First Light: Academy screenings for Nov. & Dec. 2009.

New This Week THE BOYS ARE BACK - PG13 - Comedy Based on Simon Carr’s acclaimed memoirs of the same title (2001), Clive Owen plays sportswriter Joe Warr—a widower who must contend with rearing two sons alone. Shot in the countryside of South Australia, it explores the vicissitudinous path the three men take through grief to unification. 104 min. IN MY LIFE - Unrated - Comedy - A film from the Philippines, it stars Vilma Santos as (sh!t you not) Shirley Templo, a Filipino librarian who moves to New York to be closer to her estranged son, Mark (Luis Manzano). From there, the film explores the complex relationship she has with Mark’s partner Noel (John Lloyd Cruz), who helps Templo as she works through the frustrations of big city life. 120 min. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY - R - Horror - The same low-budget, high-yield strategy as The Blaire Witch Project (1999), this film follows a young suburban couple (Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat) who move into a seeminglynormal starter house, but soon find themselves haunted by the things that go bump in the night. So, they set up video cameras to help figure out what’s so frightening. 86 min. THIS IS IT - PG - Documentary - Drawing from over 100 hours of behind-the-scenes footage of Michael Jackson, as he prepared for the comeback he longed for (which would have kicked off this summer in London, at The O2 arena), this film was produced with the steadfast backing of the Michael Jackson estate. An in-depth epitaph that also pays homage to the production efforts that never fully materialized, this stunningly produced documentary is a celebration of Jackson’s life, made with fans in mind—-a non-critical look at the last life and times of one of the greatest performers of our age. 120 min.

Now Showing AMELIA - PG - Drama - Hilary Swank plays Atchison, Kansas native, Amelia Earhart--the record-breaking American pilot who became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean (in 1928, flying a Fokker F7). Alongside navigator Fred Noonan (in a rebuilt Lockheed Electra), she disappeared mysteriously over the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937, while attempting to become the first woman to fly around the world. Pairing the story of inspirational Earhart with Swank, it’s clear that this film is begging for more than a nod. 111 min. ASTRO BOY - PG - Family - A skillful scientist creates a super-power robot in the image of his deceased son, known as Astro Boy. Still grieving, he rejects the replica he created. When aliens threaten the Earth, Astro Boy embarks on an adventure to save the planet, become famous, and reconcile with pops. 94 min. CAPITALISM A LOVE STORY - R - Documentary - Auteur Michael Moore’s latest installment comes on the 20th anniversary of his groundbreaking Roger & Me. From the epicenters of financials institutions and big business to Washington, D.C., Moore gives viewers rarelyseen insight into the powerhouses at the heart of our current collapse. 127 min. CIRQUE DU FREAK : THE VAMPIRE’S ASSISTANT - PG13 - Fantasy - More lighthearted than Twilight, to which obvious parallels are drawn, this flick is based on novels by Darren Shan. Pals Darren (Chris Massoglia) and Steve (Josh Hutcherson) peek in on a strange circus that’s come to town. How strange? Selma Hayek is the bearded lady--and oddly missing from most of the previews, I might add. Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly) is fo’ realz vampire who, to Steve’s dismay, takes Darren into his ranks and a war with the Vampanese. 108 min.

COUPLES RETREAT - PG13 - Comedy - Stars Vince Vaughn, John Favreau, Jason Batemen (heh heh), Faizon Love, Malin Akerman, Kristen Bell, Kristen Davis and Kali Hawk, as four Midwestern couples who embark on a surf, sun and sand retreat in order to reconnect. Supposed hilarity ensues when the gurus there to guide them to marital bliss cause a quirky mess. 107 min. G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA - PG13 - Action - A super-elite team of international military operatives battle the evildoer organization Cobra, with high tech weapons the likes of which you probably never dreamed of while playing with your Hasbro toys in the sandbox. This flashy new rendition’s sandy battlefield is, not surprisingly, a North African desert. 120 min. HALLOWEEN 2 - R - Horror - Michael Meyer’s (Tyler Mane) little sister Laurie (Scout TaylorCompton) just never gets a break. The movie picks up where the last one left off: at the Haddonfield General Hospital. A bloodbath ensues as Michael slaughters everyone in his path while in pursuit of Laurie. Fast forward to the anniversary of the killings, and the haunted Laurie is again visited by her abominable big bro. 101 min. LAW ABIDING CITIZEN - R - Thriller - Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) exacts revenge when the man who murdered his wife and children a decade ago, is released. Nick Rice (Jaime Foxx) is the prosecutor who was assigned to the case, and responsible for the plea bargain that saved the killer. Shelton—a brilliant sociopath pushed to the brink by his trials— contends with Rice, who he feels is part of a broken justice system. 122 min. SAW 6 - R - Horror - Detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) is the Jigsaw’s (Tobin Bell) successor, and the FBI’s actions against him instigate another ‘game,’ which reveals, in this sixth installment, the Jigsaw’s master-plan. 90 min. THE STEP FATHER - R - Thriller - Penn Badgley plays Michael Harding, a young man who has just returned home from military school, and whose suspicions about his mother’s (Sela Ward) new boyfriend (Dylan Walsh) are frighteningly confirmed. 102 min. SURROGATES (DIGITAL) - PG13 - Sci-Fi - In the future, robots are smarter and better looking than humans. So, humans decide to live in isolation and interact with fellow bag of bones via robots alone. Bruce Willis plays an FBI agent who investigates some mischief and conspiracy surrounding the murder of the surrogate inventor. 112 min. TYLER PERRY’S I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF - PG13 - Comedy - Aunty April (Taraji P. Henson), a lounge singer, drinks heavily and lives off of her married boyfriend, Raymond. Wanting little to do with her delinquent niece and two young nephews recently charged under her care, she starts to reassess her lifestyle when an intriguing Mexican man moves into her basement. 113 min. UH WARRIOR FOOTBALL AT NEVADA - Check out the University of Hawaii football games for $10 a pop. This Saturday, UH at Nevada--the eighth game in Warrior’s longest on-the-road stretch in 45 years. WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE - PG - Family - Director Spike Jonze teamed with Dave Eggers in creating the hip screen adaptation of this classic children’s tale, written and illustrated by the legendary Maurice Sendak. Staying true to the book’s delightfully moody palate, Jonze combines live action with CGI and (the all-too lost art of) puppeteering— bringing to life the whimsical characters beloved by so many since 1963. 94 min. ZOMBIELAND - R - Horror - This is one of the few flicks I’ve been truly excited about. Woody Harrelson lays the zombie-slaying, kamakazi cowboy “Tallahassee,” Emma Stone is “Wichita,” Abigail Breslin is “Little Rock,” and Bill Murray is himself. Uh, between Harrellson and Murray alone, what more to say? See you there! 88 min.

Thursday (Oct. 29) through Sunday (Nov. 1) CD release tour

The Front Street street-issue is an unresolved bone of contention, but there’s still plenty going on. Hell, why not make a West Side weekend of it, by starting off with the Final Friday Art Night? After a visit to the Maui Ocean Center for underwater pumpkin carving (Fri, 1pm; Sat, 11:30am), avoid the Pali mayhem by cruising to Lahaina from Ma’alaea with the Pacific Whale Foundation’s “Spook-tacular Evening at Sea” (6, 6:30 or 7pm, $69.95/$59.95). Keiki will have police escorts with the Costume Parade in its 31st year, beginning at Papalaua St. and ending at Banyan Tree Park (3:30pm). Also at The Wharf, after being dreadfully dormant for several years, the Haunted House returns ($5 for keiki, 1-6pm/$8 for adults 6-10pm), alongside the 26th Annual Ghoulish Gala Karaoke Costume Contest with Aunty Toddy Lilikoi and the 7th installment of “Night of the Living Dread” (yep, Marty) upstairs at Cool Cat Café ($10, 10pm).The Hard Rock Café celebrates by continuing their PINKTOBER

events and entertainment (Sat, $15, 9pm), a portion of the proceeds benefiting The Pacific Cancer Foundation. Plus, Passion at Timba puts the “o” in Halloween with beats by DJ Del Sol ($10/$15, 7pm). On the South Side, sip some absinthe at Ambrosia’s Haunted House to the “electronic tracks of doom” by DJ CIA (no cover, 10pm). Gian Don’s hosts a HalloQueen Bash ($10/$15, 9pm) and Oceans Beach Bar & Grill features entertainment by Gomega and DJ Emmit (9:30pm). Keep it tame for keiki and hang out with the perpetually costumed Feather Duster the Clown at the Piilani Village Shopping Center (3-6pm), though Diamonds gets dangerous with Seattle trio, Fiasco ($7/$10, 9pm), and Mulligans on the Blue hosts a bash with three-set lineup and costume contest. In Wailuku, catch a thrill at the Iao Theater’s Haunted House, back by popular demand. Countryside, Casanova holds a costume contest and books Pio Marasco and Gretchen Rhodes ($20 presale, 10pm).

Austin’s Roger Len Smith makes his fourth professional trip back to the Valley Isle to launch his fifth album, Clear Blue Skies—the discs arrived just this past Friday, a mere day before he embarked for Maui. Joining Smith for his series of CD release party gigs are local musicians and long-time friends, newly billed as The Maui Wowies. In an interview with Maui Time, Smith calls the ensemble “a power trio with special guests,” including Jack Funn (an impossibly tall bassist who is the first of Smith’s Texan cronies to join him in Hawaii), along with Maui guys (and girl) Mike Pearl and Pete Atkins (alternating on drums, depending on the evening), Abe Vanderberg (super sax man), Dave Anthony (a weekends-only slide guitarist), and Eliza Bostwick (harmonic backup vocals). “Music is a magical language. It’s a universal language, but it’s a magical connection,” says Smith. Catch some of that magic starting Thursday at Diamonds Ice Bar & Grill (9pm), then Friday at Stopwatch (9pm). Saturday, Smith heads West to Longhi’s

Sardonic, self-deprecating, drolly divine, David Sedaris—considered by many (myself included) to be one of the preeminent humorists writing today—completes his whirlwind lecture tour in Hawaii. And we should consider ourselves damned lucky to have the chance to see him! Luckier still, we scooped the Maui exclusive interview with him, conducted by phone from his Paris apartment (look for the story in next week’s edition). Sedaris got his start on National Public Radio thanks to Ira Glass, and says of the stardom that followed, “My life changed completely, like someone waved a magic wand.” Since—and amidst—his NPR success, he’s authored Barrel Fever, Holidays on Ice, Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim and most recently, When You Are Engulfed in Flames. Each title has become a bestseller—collectively topping 7 million copies sold worldwide, translated into 25 languages. Sedaris family fans already know his sister Amy is the star of

They topped the charts as a duo in the 70’s, then embarked on successful solo careers thereafter, so few expected Kenny Loggins and Jimmy Messina to reunite in the way that they have--the duo themselves, included. Locals love their hit “Lahaina,” among many classics, and keiki too can groove to “House at Pooh Corner.”

Having seen them myself, at the MACC (curiously, on November 13th of 2005), I can attest to the fact these star songsters have still got it. $45/$65/$75/$125. 7:30 p.m. Castle Theater, MACC, One Cameron Way, Kahului, HI 96732. 808-242-7469. FRAN COSMO, FORMERLY OF BOSTON - Sat, Dec 12. Fran Cosmo toured with Boston for over 10 years, singing lead on the platinum-selling album “Walk On,” as well as co-lead on “Corporate America.” Along with guitarist and songwriter Anthony Cosmo, also formerly of Boston, the pair are set to take the stage. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.mauiarts.org or by calling the Box Office. $85 (VIP)/$55/$35/$25. 7 p.m. A & B Amphitheater, MACC, One Cameron Way, Kahului, HI 96732. 808-242-7469.

HALLOWEEN 2ND ANNUAL NIGHT OF THE DEAD - Featuring drink specials and $2 tacos all night!. 7 p.m. - Close. Santa Fe Cantina, 900 Front St., Lahaina, HI 96761. 808-667-7805. 8TH ANNUAL HALLOWEEN BASH - Presented by Mulligans, Q103 and Guinness, this bash features “the ghoulish sounds” of Kulture Klash 808 (appropriately, at 8 p.m.), Fish Tank (9:30 p.m.) and Off Tomorrow (10:30 p.m.). With over $500 in prizes, this costume contest is not to be missed. The judging

sign.language.astrology@gmail.com SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Halloween has its roots mainly in the ancient Celtic tradition of Samhain. Their calendar divided the year into two parts, light and dark, with Samhain (roughly translated as “Summer’s End) representing the end of the light half and the beginning of the dark half. You are all too familiar with your dark side, but sometimes I worry about you losing touch with the lightness that is also an important part of you. Can you use the next six months to get back in touch? After all, the darker things get, the easier it is to shine.

As much as we are evolving to become more cooperative, as a species we’re still pretty hardwired towards hierarchy. Most humans are pretty familiar and comfortable with other humans having more or less power than them. Thus when we’re in a situation where everyone is supposed to be equal, and only a vote—or better yet, consensus—will lead to an actual decision, it’s sometimes difďŹ cult ďŹ guring out how to get things done. This week, luckily, you’ll get some practice. Remember, you don’t need to quell your natural leadership instincts—just use them to make sure everyone gets their say.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Halloween has long been one of my favorite holidays. Not the sterile, lameass kids’ version that it’s become today, but the darker one I enjoyed as a kid (and still do). Masks have power, and donning one can let you explore sides of yourself that you might not get to, normally. What facet of yourself might enjoy release this week? I’m absolutely positive that there’s some fascinating (and perhaps a bit scary) part of you that rarely gets to see the light of day. This week is a great time to let him or her come out and play.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Some plants have evolved to be carnivorous, and found ways to lure small animals and insects into their grasps. There are animals that have evolved to resemble plants in order to ďŹ nd a niche in which to survive. Obviously their evolution is a slow and mostly unconscious process. Yours, however, is quite the opposite: much faster, and much more conscious. You have the luxury of asking yourself: “If I change in order to ďŹ t in better, what will I have then become? Will I like that?â€? It’s an important question, and one I hope you ďŹ nd a positive answer to before you take your next step.

VOJU TQFDJBM

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) The problem with prophecy is that it almost always invalidates itself. Suppose you dream about a possible future. From then on, many of your choices and actions may be inuenced by that dreaming vision—and probably keep it from ever happening. That’s free will for you. I’m not suggesting you’re psychic, but sometimes you have pretty strong premonitions about how something may play out. However, instead of acting to prevent the outcome, you’re intent on proving yourself right, and act to manifest it instead—even when it’s not something you actually want to happen! Talk about subtle selfsabotage. May I suggest you quit that, pronto?

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) You don’t need a Halloween mask to show your true colors—you have trouble hiding them under normal circumstances, so there’s no real revelation there. While donning a disguise can be a very useful exercise for people with more hidden aspects than you, you don’t need that excuse to let it all hang out. You’ve always been very what-you-see-is-what-you-get. Thus this Halloween can be about fun in its purest form. Go on and be something you’re not, but wish you were. Go for the longest stretch you can think of. Not that you need another one, but consider this holiday a fantastic excuse to just play.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) I encouraged some signs to use Halloween’s mask tradition to express rarely-visible parts of themselves, but that’s not really what you need, Taurus. You need a holiday where you can relax all control, and nothing bad will happen. You can do whatever you want, and the next day face no consequences worse than a bad hangover. Unfortunately, no such holiday exists, yet—but that shouldn’t stop you from making one up. Even if you never actually manifest it (although you should), just ďŹ guring out what you’d want on your own personal holiday will be a great (and very educational) exercise.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Unfortunately a leak in the roof often means ripping out the whole ceiling and making a general mess of things. By the time the water penetrates to where you live, there’s more to deal with than just throwing a patch up top could take care of. Some problems are like that—once they’ve manifested, addressing them requires more than a Band-Aid. This, is one of those—or it will be. You can’t even see the problem yet, but you may already suspect it exists. A little investigation will reveal more, and I wouldn’t hesitate to do it—you may yet have a chance to nip this thing in the bud.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Certain of life’s milestones (losing your virginity, falling in love, getting your heart broken, etc) are more widely recognized than others. Unfortunately, the ones that don’t get as much press are the ones that stick with you Cancers more tenaciously. Take, for instance, the ďŹ rst time you lie to someone with whom you’ve always been honest—not to get away with something, but to protect them, or the time when you ďŹ rst put your own needs aside to address someone else’s. These are important emotional markers for you Crabs, and they deserve some attention—from you, at least, if not anyone else. Make note of the signiďŹ cant moments that have changed you, and this week try to ďŹ nd some way to honor them.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Give the world some bitter, nasty weather, and then follow it with a few days of mellow sunshine, and most people will have a hard time maintaining a bad mood. Obviously, you can’t control the weather, but the principle can still be employed. Create an environment that’s less stressful and unpleasant than wherever someone has just been, and you’re likely to enjoy a much less stressed and unpleasant version of that person. This week is all about what you can do for others to make their lives better. There’s no need to precisely emulate fellow Leo Martha Stewart, but moving in that direction sure couldn’t hurt.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Despite your obsession with efďŹ ciency, you usually ďŹ nd ways to be polite as well. (Perhaps you’ve discovered that offending people can cause tremendous delays that no amount of efďŹ ciency can offset.) I’m glad you’ve frequently practiced them, because those skills of tact and diplomacy will need a rigorous workout this week. Don’t skimp on your manners, or you’ll pay the price in tedious time and effort repairing the damage. Sure, all that stuff is pretty much bullshit—unfortunately, it’s bullshit that some people—people you need to deal with—still take pretty seriously. Therefore, you should, too.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Sometimes you may wish you were more like a turtle or a snail, with a hard shell to retreat into when the world gets nasty. However, given the nature of life’s challenges, such a strategy would rarely get you out of trouble, but only postpone it instead. Shielding yourself from pain temporarily won’t make it go away. I wouldn’t advise it, unless all you needed was a couple minutes to breathe—because that’s all you’d get. When something troubling happens, don’t retreat from it. Instead confront it head on. The shortest, quickest route past this rough patch is straight through it.
