Maui is overrun with feral cats. They’re killing endangered birds and have even passed diseases to seals and dolphins. Officials and animal rights groups can’t agree on a solution, but the truth is, there might not be a solution. We examine the Valley Isle’s kitty situation.

Furlough Flip-Flop; Say it Ain't So HYPER LOCAL Just finished reading a Chamber of Commerce press release, er, Maui News story, written by Maui News publisher/ Chamber Chairman Joe Bradley. The piece, titled “Forecast for Maui tourism gets brighter,â€? concludes with this quote from Maui Visitors Bureau director Terry Vencl: “Let’s use this down time to revitalize our biggest asset, the spirit of aloha.â€? Look, everyone’s rooting for a rebound; people are out of work, businesses are closing and the mood is gloomy. Setting aside differences in philosophy and values, we’re all in the same leaky rowboat, and we’re all searching with increasing desperation for a bucket. But. Can we please dispense with the platitudes about how all we need to do is revive the aloha spirit and everything will be fine? Maui is a beautiful island with lots of great people. The aloha spirit—commercially co-opted as it may be—is a cool concept that certainly adds to the allure and appeal of this unique, wonderful place. But it’s not something that can be quantified, captured by a brochure or flipped on like a magical touristattracting switch‌.

LOCAL No one outside her inner circle knows what, exactly, caused Gov. Lingle to reverse course on the teacher furloughs she approved less than two months ago, and praised at the time as an example of “leadership and “shared sacrifice. But it can’t be a coincidence that the Governor’s plan to restore instructional days was unveiled a mere 72 hours after U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan publicly blasted the furloughs and hinted that they could cost Hawaii federal dollars. (It wasn’t the first time Duncan weighed in on the issue; in an October 23 Honolulu Advertiser op-ed he called the furloughs a “step in the wrong direction.) As the heat has intensified, Lingle’s done her best to shift the blame onto the teachers’ union.

Ships in the night. Now, of course, she’s trying to spin her proposal—which would scoop $50 million from the state’s “rainy dayâ€? fund and do away with some non-classroom days set aside to give teachers time to prep and attend workshops—as an example of bold leadership, rather than the transparent backpedaling that it is. In a horn-tooting press release titled “Governor Announces Plan to Restore Class Time for Students,â€? Lingle took another not-so-subtle swipe at Hawaii’s teachers, saying it’s time to “get our focus back on improving education—on the quality of education—rather than on simply the quantity of education.â€? Politics aside, if Furlough Fridays are in fact kicked to the curb—however it’s accomplished and whoever self-servingly rushes in to take credit—it’ll be a good thing for students, and therefore a good thing for all of us‌. Speaking of Her Majesty, she returned this week from a trip to China, where she talked energy, tourism and other matters and posed for many photo ops. Her journey to the People’s Republic overlapped with Obama’s, though whether the two crossed paths is unclear. If Lingle’s avoidance of the President after his election is any indication

OVERHEARD “Of course you like me. I’ve never said ‘no’ to you in your life. - Woman to her dog at Big Beach

(after gleefully jetting to the Mainland to stump for McCain-Palin, she waited months to meet with Obama, citing pressing concerns here at home), I’m guessing they didn’t share a poignant moment on the Great Wall‌. A lawsuit filed by a property owner on Oahu has put House Speaker Calvin Say in a bit of ethical hot water. The suit accuses Say of a conict-of-interest after he voted on a piece of legislation that impacts lease agreements in a building that houses a company—Warabeya U.S.A., Inc.—from which Say receives $1,000 a month. Quoted in a Pacific Business News dispatch, Say says he’s “just an officer in titleâ€? for Warabeya and is “not there for any daily operations.â€? So, to paraphrase: “I don’t really do anything for them, but they pay me 12 grand a year anyway.â€? Must be nice‌. Almost exactly three years ago, Hawaii smokers may recall, the state enacted a law severely restricting where people could light up, including, most notably, bars. Flashforward to the present and that tough antismoking crackdown has netted, drumroll please‌one citation (a Honolulu woman who was slapped with a $25 fine, according to a PBN report). Part of the problem (or not, depending on your perspective) is that only cops and the attorney general’s office are allowed to assess fines, and they have a few items on their to-do lists that rank higher than “write guy a ticket for puffing a Camel.â€? The Department of Health is reportedly pushing for the right to dole out punishment (currently the best they can do is a sternly worded letter), but until then, it looks like the glares and exaggerated coughs of fellow patrons and passersby will remain the best deterrent‌.

NOT LOCAL As the occupations of Afghanistan and Iraq limp toward the New Year, the military announced that, since January, 211 activeduty, reserve and National Guard troops have committed suicide. Add the 197 soldiers who took their own lives in 2008, and this is like a shadow war, being waged in the hearts and minds of our men and women in uniform. Addressing the issue at a briefing in Washington this week, Gen. Peter Chiarelli offered one of those chillingly clinical military quotes that are absolutely oozing with unintended subtext: “We still haven’t found any statistically significant causal linkage that would allow us to effectively predict human behavior. ■To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/coconut18

LCWATCH Accelerate the Change rparsons@earthlink.net

Hostesses with the Mostesses

L

et’s open up the LC Watch mailbag, and field a question from Alan (no last name given, and the reason will become obvious in a moment), who wonders: “Does the LC [conduct] minor decoy stings at hostess bars?” Hostess bars, for those unfamiliar, are the joints in Central Maui (there are about a dozen in Wailuku and at least one in Kahului) where you can go in, buy a drink and get a girl on the side instead of mixed nuts. (For a firstperson account of what goes on in these places, see Maui Time’s July 2005 feature “What it’s like to work in Wailuku’s hostess bars.” Or see for yourself, provided you’re of legal drinking age and don’t have a jealous spouse waiting at home.) The bars are given class 5, category D licenses and are defined in the LC’s rules as “premises in which employees or entertainers are compensated to sit with patrons.” Those employees have to be registered with the department. Anyway, “Alan,” to answer your question: Yes, the LC does indeed conduct minor decoy stings at hostess bars. The most recent bust noted in this space was in July 2008, when Saigon Palace was slapped with a $2,000 fine (half suspended pending good behavior, if that’s the right word), after one of its employees asked a 19-year-old kid if he wanted to buy a drink. The LC started dispatching decoys to hostess bars in 2007, and even boasted about it in the “accomplishments” section of its annual budget report. Ah yes, sending underage kids into seedy neon dives to get propositioned by, ahem, “hostesses.” Truly something to be proud of. ■ - Jacob Shafer To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/lc18

Green Festival co-founder shows the way to a new economy

O

n a sunny autumn morning as crisp as a Fuji apple, a gathering crowd fills the sidewalk at the corner of 8th and Brannan in San Francisco. In front of a renovated train station—now the Concourse Exhibition Center—Cirque du Soleil performers dressed in bug costumes do a booty-shaking, Bollywood style dance to entertain those awaiting the opening of the 8th annual Green Festival. Inside, co-founder Kevin Danaher is doing a radio interview while staff, volunteers and vendors make last-minute preparations for the three-day event, set to feature more than 125 speakers and 400 exhibitors. Those offering the latest in green building, natural foods, eco-fashion,

Danaher, who equates its magnitude to when feudalism gave way to capitalism some five centuries ago. “If you look at avalanches,” he says, “you’ll notice that they start small. Basically, we’ve got to accelerate this transition to a green economy, or we’re screwed.”

D

anaher goes about his work, along with co-producer Alisa Gravits of Green America, with a staff of 50 putting on a $1 million festival, while paying himself an annual salary of $40,000. It’s enough to get by, and far more than millions of people worldwide whose lot Danaher has tried to improve by spearheading development projects and going to bat for

“We’re in the cancer stage,” says Global Exchange founder Kevin Danaher, “where money values are rapidly eroding life values.” renewable energy, clean technology, socially responsible investing, green media, organic foods and green careers must go through a rigorous screening process and meet strict standards of social and environmental responsibility. “There’s a lot of greenwashing out there,” says Danaher. San Francisco is the birthplace of the very first Green Festival, which now travels to Seattle, Chicago, Denver and Washington, D.C. The event is a joint project of Global Exchange, the international human rights and fair trade organization Danaher founded over 20 years ago, and Green America, which uses economic strategies and other tools to promote social and environmental justice. More than just a green trade show, the Green Festival also walks its talk, recycling or composting nearly all the waste generated with the help of volunteers—some 1,000 strong for the weekend—monitoring exactly what goes into each color recycling bin throughout the exhibition hall. Coffee, tea and chocolates are certified Fair Trade, beer and wine are organic and biodynamic and vegetarian food is served on compostable plates. The gathering is intended to offer hope, inspiration and practical ideas. To Danaher, there is recognition that the transition to sustainability must happen soon, not because it’s trendy, but because it is absolutely essential. “We’re in the cancer stage,” he says, “where money values are rapidly eroding life values.” This is a seismic transition, says

the rights of women, farmers, children, laborers and indigenous communities. A single entry or three-day Green Festival pass costs $15. Those arriving via mass transit receive a $5 discount, as do those arriving by bicycle (a bicycle valet service is free). There are samples galore: skin care products, energy bars, green cinema trailers, organic apples, kombucha, eco-magazines, atmospheric water. The Hemp Industries Association Pavilion showcases hemp clothing, bags, paper, nutritional foods and oils, body care products and educational materials. Speakers cover the gamut of green topics: Medea Benjamin (Code Pink, and Danaher’s wife) addresses “Moving from hope to action: Ending war in the age of Obama”; renowned mycologist Paul Stamets unveils his plan for how “Mushrooms can save the world”; Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! explicates the power of independent journalism; others speak about bamboo as construction material, aquaponics, the politics of food safety, teaching green justice and youth empowerment/green career programs. Participants can be treated to a free “Hands-on stress evaluation,” or a minimassage. Pet owners can pick up “SWheat scoop” kitty litter, made from non-toxic grain chaff, or 100 percent flushable dog waste bags. There are myriad green printing options, and even paper made from elephant dung. It’s all part of a retrofit for an economic system that is in disarray and desperately calling for a complete makeover.

Author David Korten addresses the issue in his newest book, Agenda for a New Economy: Why Wall Street Can’t Be Fixed and How to Replace It. “A 30-year experiment with trickle-down economics that favored the interests of Wall Street speculators over the hard working people…proved not to work,” writes Korten. “We now live with the devastating consequences. “Corrective action begins with recognition that our economic crisis is, at its core, a moral crisis. Our economic institutions and rules…consistently place financial values ahead of life values. We must now come together to create the institutions of a new economy founded on a values-based pragmatism that recognizes a simple truth: if the world is to work for any of us, it must work for all of us.” Korten is adamant that there be no more government bailouts of failed institutions. He advocates vigorous antitrust enforcement to break up excessive concentrations of economic power and to help restore market discipline. He says we need to strive for food independence by rebuilding local food systems, and energy independence by supporting local entrepreneurs creating businesses to apply renewable technologies. He favors rebuilding our infrastructure to promote walking, biking and public transportation, and to aid the recovery of our farms and forestlands. He seeks to create a true ownership society where people have an opportunity to purchase a home they can afford to keep and a stake in enterprises on which their lives depend. It’s not pie-in-the-sky thinking, and it can happen. But we need to shift some major practices and institutions, both Korten and Danaher understand. Danaher tosses out the number of U.S. military bases around the world—865—and says the tremendous amount of resources being poured into them is part of the imbalance that is eroding life values. At a time of unprecedented focus on our economy—in Hawaii, California and globally—the Green Festival and its founders are offering real, viable solutions for strengthening local communities with eco-friendly products, services, investments and programs. It’s part of a mission to work with businesses everywhere to grow a green economy that’s good for the people and the planet. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/rr18

GREEN WITH LUST For some consumers, good environmental citizenship is important even when choosing among sex accessories. No longer will they tolerate plastic personal vibrators made with the softeners called phthalates, or body lubricants that contain toxic chemicals typically found in, say, antifreeze, or leather restraints from slaughtered cattle. In an October issue, Time magazine described a market of organic lubricants, biodegradable whips and handcuffs, vegan condoms and glass or mahogany vibrators (even handcrankable models, eliminating the need for batteries). Some Catholic Church officials have also embraced the concept to further denounce chemical and latex birth controls, re-characterizing the traditional “rhythm” family planning as the back-to-nature detection of ovulation via body signals.

NO MORE REACH-AROUNDS The British retailer Debenhams announced in September that it would begin selling men’s briefs whose opening is more accessible from the left side, for left-handers who have been forced for decades to manipulate a rightside opening. Previously, said a Debenhams executive, “[L]eft-handed men have to reach much further into their pants, performing a Z-shaped maneuver through two 180-degree angles before achieving the result that righthanded men perform with ease.”

VIAGRA NOT INCLUDED Mattel is accepting pre-orders for the April 2010 release of the newest doll in the Barbie/Ken line, the spiffily dressed Palm Beach Sugar Daddy Ken (apparently to be showcased with a much younger, trophy-type Barbie).

WE SMELL A REALITY SHOW CNN, reporting from the London Zoo in August, described the excitement surrounding news that the zoo would soon acquire a 12-year-old male gorilla from a preserve in France. Zoo officials were pleased, but its three older female gorillas were almost ecstatic. Shown posters of Yeboah, the male, female Zaire “shrieked in delight,” while Effie wedged the poster into a tree and stared at it and Mjukuu held the photo close to her chest, “then ate it.”

BIRDS OF A DIFFERENT FATHER

Employee Pricing for Kama‘aina*

The birth of two chicks on the same day at the Jerusalem Biblical Zoo in April was unusual enough, but especially noteworthy because of the birds’ lineage. Their fathers were a gay vulture couple about 10 years ago, according to a report in the Israeli daily Haaretz , and zoo caretakers provided them an artificial egg to “incubate” until they could replace the egg with a just-hatched vulture, as if the male-male couple had birthed it. In “an insane coincidence,” said a zoo official, the two males eventually separated and paired with females, and those females hatched eggs on the same day last April. Two weeks ago, according to Haaretz, the two chicks achieved independence on the same day and were moved to the zoo’s aviary.

I SENSE A RIPOFF IN YOUR FUTURE Surprisingly, the recession otherwise felt in the Phoenix area this year has largely spared one “profession”: psychics. An October Arizona Republic report found that while longtime clients tended to reduce their use of astrology and related fields, their business was replaced by a new class of customers desperate to know the future—those facing financial ruin because of bad home mortgages. (Few, wrote the reporter, seemed to sense the irony of purchasing questionable psychic services to overcome the consequences of questionable mortgage decisions.)

RECESSION PWOOF A young, media-shy Chinese woman, identified only as “Mrs. Wang” purchased an 18-month-old Tibetan mastiff in September for a reported 4 million yuan (about $585,000). The price is almost four times the previous reported high for the purchase of a dog (a cloned Labrador, by a Florida family). ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/notw18

Re Sara Tekula’s November 12 feature “The Unemployment Survival Guide”: You’ve done a good job here, even though you’re “jobless.” The whole time I was reading this, I was thinking to myself, “Hmm… here’s an articulate, thoughtful, hard-working person who is spelling out the details of receiving UI. She is even so astute as to recommend hydration, health and scheduling considerations.” The fact that you count as one of Hawaii’s and America’s unemployed is actually one of the most dismal pieces of news on the subject to date. Feel like working on a Furlough Friday piece sometime?

Amanda Li Wilson, via mauitime.com Brilliantly written article: upbeat, humorous, informative and inspiring. I have first-hand knowledge of the unemployment struggles on this Island. Everything reported in the article is to a T. Usually I can’t pay attention long enough to read an article of this length but this one flowed so well I didn’t even check the six tweets and notifications I got while reading it. I would like to add my multiple job theory: Almost everyone I know holds down at least two jobs, some three. So there is plenty of work to go around, however having only one job on this island is not likely to pay your bills anymore. Those damn Baby Boomers lived in a great era didn’t they? If we could get back to needing only one job, there would be two to three times as much work available. How come wages don’t inflate at the same rate as everything else? Oh that’s right: people vote, corporations decide.

Shawn Michael, via mauitime.com Collecting unemployment is not that hard people. It is amazing how much you complain about getting such a great benefit you feel you are so entitled to. There is an entire group of our society who have mastered the art of collecting unemployment checks: hotel

workers (particularly banquet servers), sub teachers, employees of parasailing companies, tax preparers, actors/actresses and any other film industry stooge and union construction workers. If you have friends in any of the aforementioned fields, chances are they can tell you how to get through the process unscathed. One more thing: chances are your unemployment check is more than that poor state worker’s paycheck, so keep that in mind before you give them too hard of a time.

Re the November 12 story “Your Report Card, Mr. President”: Wow, this was a lot less biased than I would expect from Maui Time. For that I applaud you. Grades seem fair. Over time some things may get worse, some better. Later in his term we’ll get a clearer view of the impact of President Obama.

Nathan, via mauitime.com I haven’t had to go through the process of filing for unemployment (yet), but I did get to watch my son try to get work for six months, so I have seen the frustration a person can go through. I felt I needed to share how much I enjoyed the article. It was well written and a great use of what could have and may have been at times a very frustrating use of a person’s day. She handled it well and this article could be very helpful to the next round of participants in the system—it should be required reading. I really like the way it was laid out in smaller boxes, which contained similar content, it made for much easier reading and negotiating through it all. And Ramio Alonso’s illustrations were an added benefit. With all that said, I’d like to share the article, but I’m unsure about how to use the “share of save article” feature.

Hey, he got his kids a puppy—that was one promise for which he should receive an A+. Why not report that success?

Bill, via mauitime.com Re the November 12 Coconut Wireless entry about Obama’s Chief Agricultural Inspector nominee, Islam Siddiqui: Outrage over the seed industry’s heavy-handed tactics is a limited perspective of what the appointment could mean. Politically, it’s a poor move with far-reaching political impacts—for Obama and for the US. On two levels, it makes this country look bad. Obama’s first act as President was to sign into law a ban on the rotating door between corporate heads and federal agency heads and cherry positions in the government for industry lobbyists. Siddiqui’s appointment is in flagrant disregard to that law and should be challenged on that basis. Obama has also presented himself as trying to move this country back to center and a place of respect internationally instead of being perceived as the bully we’ve become. In this he has begun to have some success. Siddiqui will do considerable damage to that effort.

Maybe the “revolving door” happens because those are the most qualified people for the job and most familiar. Just like any other job in the world, experience and personal connections are the most important things. Because it’s for the government doesn’t make it a big conspiracy.

Teo, mauitime.com Ed. Note: The question isn’t (usually) about qualifications—it’s about loyalty. Elected and appointed public officials are supposed to serve the people; private lobbyists are charged only with serving the financial interests of one specific company or industry. To believe individuals can switch sides—often repeatedly—without blurring the line is naïve at best. May I say, I really like all your covers these days, Maui Time? The graphics have been killer.

he predator pads silently through the pili grass, crouched low, muscles tensed. Slits of yellow, nearly obscured by distended black pupils, glow from the corners of its eyes. Its ears, sensitive enough to pick up ultrasonic frequencies, fan methodically. Its tail twitches, its shoulders hunch and ripple. There is a pause and then—pounce! The ‘ua‘u turns too late. The bird tries to lift its wings, to scramble back to its burrow, but two sets of retractable claws sink into its back, pinning it to the ground. Powerful jaws clamp down on the ’ua‘u’s neck as knifelike teeth lodge between its cervical vertebrae, severing its spinal cord with a sickening pop. Noiselessly as it came, the predator stalks away, dragging its lifeless prize into the bushes. As night envelopes Haleakala, yellow eyes pierce the darkness and a low yowl can be heard over the crunch of feathers and bones. The predator is perhaps the most skilled and voracious on Maui—a genetically honed hunter with a wide range of prey that includes endemic endangered species. And its numbers are growing. CATS IN PARADISE

FERAL CATS ARE RUNNING RAMPANT ON MAUI, THREATENING NATIVE SPECIES AND SPREADING DISEASE.

IS THERE A SOLUTION—OR ARE THEY HERE TO STAY? BY JACOB SHAFER 12 November 19, 2009

Our relationship with cats dates back thousands of years. The dog may be man’s best friend, but Felis catus is the most widely owned pet on the planet, with “600 million cats liv[ing] among humans worldwide,” according to a report in the June issue of Scientific American. They come into our homes, rub against our legs, claw our furniture, curl up in our laps and sleep in our beds. We feed them, play with them, love them like members of the family. Because of this association, it’s easy to forget what powerful creatures they are. Sure, domestication has swelled their bellies and dulled their instincts. But under the surface, little Fluffy is a territorial carnivore, genetically indistinguishable from her untamed feline ancestors. That becomes obvious when cats go feral. A feral cat—not to be confused with a stray—is a cat that was either born in the wild or abandoned at a young age. Feral cats “are not socialized and disdain human contact,” according to the Maui Humane Society’s definition. They may look like our beloved pets, but for all intents and purposes they are wild animals. And there are a lot of them on Maui. Feral cats are nocturnal and skittish, and colonies have taken hold in remote regions, making accurate counts difficult to come by. Fern Duvall, a wildlife biologist with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, cites an estimate that puts the figure as high as 400,000. Maui Humane

Society Director Jocelyn Bouchard says there is “no scientific basis for that number,” but that “certainly we’re talking about a couple hundred thousand.” Either way, there are at least as many feral cats living on Maui as there are humans. “They’ve found paradise in the same place we have,” Duvall told a group of about 50 concerned residents last week at the Tavares Community Center in Pukalani. “And it has had catastrophic results.” Duvall showed graphic slides featuring the partially digested remains of native birds pulled from the stomachs of feral cats. He said thus far Maui’s cats haven’t pushed any native species to extinction but added “that could change soon.” Duvall laid out several reasons why cats are a particularly harmful invasive species. First, they’re extremely fecund—a fertile male and female cat and their descendants can produce up to 420,000 offspring in a seven-year span. Even factoring in high kitten mortality and shorter lifespans, it’s easy to see how a feral feline population can explode in a tropical location with abundant food and few competing predators. Cats are also “opportunistic hunters,” meaning they’ll stalk and kill prey even when they aren’t hungry (as every owner whose Friskies-fattened housecat has left a half-chewed rat on the doorstep can attest). And they’re obligate carnivores—they have to eat meat. “There’s no such thing as a vegetarian cat,” Duvall said, eliciting one of the evening’s few laughs. Add the fact that Hawaii’s endemic birds aren’t hardwired to fear cats and you’ve got a recipe for disaster. “Hawaii has more unique species than almost any place on Earth,” said Duvall. “It’s a very special heritage...feral cats are a threat to that.” Duvall was joined at the meeting— sponsored by Friends of Haleakala National Park—by Maui’s public health officer, Dr. Lorrin Pang. Dr. Pang outlined some of the diseases that can be spread by cats: typhus, E. coli, salmonella, Bartonella (better known as cat scratch fever), toxoplasmosis. That last one is a parasite found in cat feces. Duvall said it’s been detected in animals ranging from nene geese to spinner dolphins and monk seals. “Cat colonies are becoming the norm, not the exception,” said Duvall. Of course, the question that naturally follows is, what are we going to do about it?

TO KILL OR NOT TO KILL? “I’d love to spay feral cats all day, but I’ve got to pay my mortgage,” said a woman who identified herself as a vet, during the question and answer session following Duvall and Pang’s presentations. “You get the resources together and I’ll do it,” she added, to a smattering of applause. According to Duvall, to stabilize the population of feral cats on-island, 74 percent would have to be spayed or neutered. Right now, he said, we’re spaying and neutering less than 1 percent. “This is a huge problem,” acknowledges Bouchard. “When they’re in these remote areas, it becomes very difficult to control.” The Maui Humane Society supports a policy known as TNR, “trap, neuter, return.” Bouchard adds an “M,” for “manage.” Once a colony has been stabilized, it’s important

“Nature cannot be frozen in time,” writes no-kill advocate Nathan Winograd. “No matter how many so-called ‘non-native’ animals are killed, the goal of total eradication will never be reached.” to monitor the health and wellbeing of the animals and their environment, she says. While it endorses TNR, the Humane Society does euthanize animals. On the far end of the spectrum is Makawao-based 9th Life Hawaii, an organization that says it has “sterilized more than 1,700 cats” since 2006. “We are the undisputed leaders of the NO KILL movement on Maui, a movement that is being embraced world-wide,” reads the group’s mission statement. One of the works cited by 9th Life and

rid of the cats, won’t the rats take over?” To the first point, Duvall acknowledged cats aren’t the only threat to endangered birds. To the second, he said it’s a common misconception that predators control the prey population. In fact, he said, it’s the other way around—a female cat will ovulate more frequently if prey is plentiful, propagating as quickly and profusely as the environment allows. Duvall urged cat owners to spay and neuter their pets and to keep animals

They may look like our pets, but they're wild animals.

It’s also worth noting that cats are by no means newcomers to Hawaii—they’re nearly as entrenched as we are. A December 2007 New York Times report called Captain James Cook “a veritable Johnny Appleseed of the cat.” (Not the worst thing he’s ever been called.) Cook and other Westerners may have planted Hawaii’s fertile feline garden, but subsequent generations of humans (of all races and cultures) have tended it and helped it grow. In fact, Bouchard says, it’s a cycle that builds on itself: as the feral cat population grows, so does the myth that releasing cats into the wild to fend for themselves is a viable option. “People who are moving off-island or have unwanted kittens see all the [feral] cats out there and think, ‘Well, they’ve got a fighting chance,’” she says. As the meeting in Pukalani wound down, the prevailing sentiment seemed to be: blame the humans. “Get rid of people!” one person shouted to a murmur of approval. She doesn’t go that far, but Bouchard agrees we have to accept culpability. “We need to point the finger back at ourselves,” she says. “The best way to stem the tide is to change our own behavior.” There’s certainly truth in that. But whether the answer is TNR, eradication or some combination of the two, it’ll require a huge outpouring of resources and manpower to get results. Until then, even if you disagree with his philosophy, it seems Winograd is right: feral cats will always exist. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/feature18

other no-kill proponents is Redemption, a book by animal rights activist and former attorney Nathan Winograd. In his chapter on feral cats, Winograd rejects eradication, and accuses those who support killing feral cats to protect native species of “biological xenophobia.” “The notion that native species have more value than non-native ones finds its roots historically in Apartheid South Africa and Nazi Germany,” he writes. (He does add that the “nativist movement” is not “inherently racist.”) For Winograd and others who share his views, the eradication of feral cats is not only immoral, but also impractical. “Nature cannot be frozen in time,” he writes. “No matter how many so-called ‘non-native’ animals (and plants for that matter) are killed, the goal of total eradication will never be reached. As far as feral cats are concerned, they will always exist.” Several people at the meeting brought up similar points. One woman asked why feral cats were being singled out over pigs, mongooses and other invasive animals. Another questioner wondered, “If we get

and food indoors. He said people who feed cat colonies, while they often “have good intentions,” are contributing to the problem. But he stopped short of endorsing eradication, or any other sweeping solution. “I’m [only] here to call attention to the problem,” he said. He did add that the DLNR is working on rules to address the issue, but the clearest point that came across during the nearly three-hour meeting was: nobody has an answer.

ONLY OURSELVES TO BLAME Other islands have dealt with feral cats. According to a 2004 study published in the journal Conservation Biology, feral cats have been completely eliminated from nearly 50 islands worldwide, through a combination of trapping, hunting, poisoning and the introduction of disease. (All of which, clearly, could have serious, unintended environmental consequences.) However, most of those islands were smaller than 2 square-miles, and the largest—Marion Island in the Indian Ocean— was 112 square-miles. Maui is 727 squaremiles. Add its unique geography and isolation, and comparisons become problematic.

Compliments to the Chef Immersive dining experience offers delicious food behind the scenes David Paul’s Island Grill 900 Front St., Lahaina 662-3000

M

aui is dead last when it comes to adopting food trends from metro areas, but the silver lining is that only tried-and-true trends make it. When David Paul’s Island Grill in Lahaina said they were doing Chef’s Tables, I jumped at the chance. Soon I found myself nestled into the kitchen at David Paul’s Island Grill, sitting

Barolo wine-braised short rib.

at a beautifully set table for two. This is not a controlled environment; no romantic lighting or ambiance. Instead, it’s a hustling and bustling kitchen replete with clanking dishes, swinging doors and chefs and servers shouting at each other. But I’m at home, and in the capable hands of Executive Chef and owner David Paul.

There’s no menu at a Chef’s Table, just a chef and plates of amazing food paired with fabulous wine. To break the ice, we start with a toast of champagne, a wonderful glass of Nicolas Feuillatte, and an amusebouche, tofu with avocado relish served on beautiful handmade blue plates by Seattle glass artist Kurt McVay. The tofu dish is light, a nice entry into this dining experience. The soup course comes next, with the chilled watermelon gazpacho. It’s a surprise to the tongue—the watermelon mellows the jalepeno and diced onions and the olive oil enriches the flavors. This is not Chef David Paul’s first restaurant on Maui. His reputation precedes him, though he admits he’s having mixed reactions from the community with his latest endeavors. Perhaps some have forgotten what he brought to Maui in the ’80s and ’90s, or maybe his absence after 2000 was a bitter pill. Either way, I’m here without preconceived notions. What Chef Paul demonstrates is that his heart is in the right place, and his passion for innovation is undeterred by the hubbub his reputation stirs. He’s here to create something new and different, and tonight his focus is me and the table I occupy among his staff and stoves. I get to take in a lot of raw emotion as my next course is served. The new style sashimi is incredible—fresh grown herbs stud a spectacular square of high grade limemarinated ahi. Cerrano chile and garlic grace the surface, and a white soy-based sauce is dabbled on top. A table of ten orders the tasting menu and a flurry of action swirls

around the kitchen. (The restaurant offers a five-course tasting for $48 per person.) The approach to wine at Island Grill recreates a walk in the wine cellar, where you can choose your own bottles by labels and price, and there are a mind-boggling 50 choices for wines by the glass under $10. David is clearly inspired by his children and made a point to describe the Brussels sprout Caesar as his young son’s idea. The unusual leaf holds the dressing up well, and it’s served with anchovy on top. Princess and the Pea scallops are next, and this was one of my favorite dishes—a perfectly seared scallop on a pan-fried pea cake topped by an asparagus tip and a sweet sauce. In all, nine plates were served, each

spectacular in their own way—the Chef continues until you wave a white flag of surrender. There was so much more to try! While I had to throw in the towel for the night, I vowed to be back for some of the events they have planned: classic cocktails on art night Friday with “mixologists,” a Diva Club for lady foodies who like shopping and champagne and many more nights orbiting around the amazing creations of David Paul. ■

he price we pay to live in paradise is that we’re often so busy we don’t get to enjoy it. Between the multiple jobs, family and bills that keep piling up, it’s tough to appreciate the sweet sea breeze, to admire sunsets painted in every color of sweet, ripe Lilikoi. It’s depressing to live a dream vacation spot, and always feel like you need one. But not when you’re listening to Cecilio & Kapono, or C & K as their fans know them. You can almost feel the stress and tension melting off. Listening to C & K is like sipping a pina colada on the beach, hot sand between your toes…except you can do it in your car, while sipping your coffee and checking your hair. (Not that I’d recommend that.) The best way to listen to Cecilio & Kapono is surrounded by good

friends, relaxing and unwinding. C & K capture that idyllic Hawaii, the one where we take the time to enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds us. Cecilio and Kapono met on the North Shore of Oahu in 1973, jammed together, liked what they heard and the rest is history. When I asked how many albums they’ve recorded—between touring the

world—Cecilio told me to ask Kapono. “I think maybe twelve,” Kapono responded. (Wikipedia tells me 14.) When asked about his favorite place to perform, Kapono simply replied, “Anywhere I’m performing.” Asked what his favorite song is to perform, Cecilio said his favorite song is whichever he’s working on. “We write the songs, and you pick your favorite.” Although Kapono describes himself as shy, it’s hard to believe him in the face of his accomplishments. He’s won multiple Na Hoku Hono Hono awards, and authored an award-winning children’s book. I asked him how he manages and he replied, “Performing helps me. I love to do it. I talk through my music.” Kapono is a local boy, and throughout high school and college he remained very athletic. He says if hadn’t chosen to play music, he would probably be a professional football player. Kapono was introduced to music at a young age, when he began singing in a choir. In addition to singing, guitar, bass, ukelele and keyboard, he also has some experience with drums.

THANKS! FOR MAKING US #1…

Outgoing and personable, Cecilio originally came to Hawaii from the Mainland, where he received formal training. He’s versed in a range of instruments, including guitar, piano, various hand percussion instruments, mandolin, congas and harmonica. Despite their divergent pasts, Cecilio and Kapono agree on what message they want their music to get across: love. “Whether it’s finding love, losing love, unrequited… any form of love is the message we’re trying to convey,” Kapono said. “ Love, peace, happiness. I want people to feel happy; I want them to feel good.” C & K have been together for 36 years. With that sort of longevity, they’ve got to be doing something right. While they both continue to pursue solo careers, they still reunite yearly to create the music that moves us, and more importantly, gets some of us to stop moving. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/music18

Mixed Box Psychological thriller worth a look, if you can get past the unintentional hilarity The Box

★★★★★

Rated PG-13/115 min.

M

y favorite TV show was always The Twilight Zone, which asked its viewers, what would you do? An interesting episode of the ’80s version of the show was called “Button, Button,” written by Richard Matheson, about a couple who were given a box with a red button on top from a strange man, who told them if they pushed the button they would receive thousands of dollars, but someone they didn’t know would die. Now, that episode gets a feature-length adaptation from writer/ director Richard Kelly, who gave us the visionary Donnie Darko and the messy but always interesting Southland Tales. Cameron Diaz and James Marsden play a troubled couple who are given the box by a nameless man with a disfigured face (Frank Langella) and ponder whether to press the red button or go on with their unremarkable lives. This is the most focused film Kelly has

Worst marriage counselor ever. made and, while it is an elaborate expansion on a simple idea, he goes in intriguing directions that Matheson and even Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling would approve of. The look of the movie is terrific, as it not only recreates the decor of 1976 but also the stylistic appearance of a ’70s film, with its soft, fuzzy imagery and artsy framing. Diaz is touching as the melancholy school teacher with a sad past and Marsden is equally good as her husband, but

Langella—so great playing everything from Richard Nixon to Dracula—is strangely not menacing enough, even with grotesque make-up effects aiding him. In the end, the film is weird—and not always in a good way. The tone is deadly serious, but many moments are unintentionally hilarious, especially whenever Kelly has some goofy-looking extras stare into the camera and offer a “menacing” look. There are other moments that are meant to be

chilling but are so silly, I laughed aloud during the screening (and I wasn’t alone). The complex story takes a while to take off and doesn’t really get going until the third act, with a bizarre, campy set piece in a library that offers some cool special effects and kick-starts the rest of the film. Without giving away a single plot point, I’ll say that the climax is compelling and remarkably cruel in ways you don’t normally see in a Hollywood movie. Even with a few cool and unsettling scenes, the strong lead actors and better art direction than a whole season of That ’70s Show, there are several sequences here that are so absurd, they sap the film’s momentum and threaten to derail it entirely. I like The Box the more I think about it, but something this strange and uneven is a good bet for DVD, not the big screen. Which—given its small-screen beginnings—seems about right. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/film18

Maui Film Festival Candlelight Cinema Will return with the First Light: Academy screenings for Nov. & Dec. 2009.

New This Week THE BLINDE SIDE - PG13 - Drama - An underdog, overweight football player is transformed into an NFL prospect with the help of Sandra Bullock and a boatload of uplifting sports movie clichés. 126 min. Jacob Shafer NEW MOON - PG13 - Fantasy - Preteens rejoice: the Twilight saga continues, now with even more gaunt cheekbones, carefully mussed hair and quivering vampire angst. 130 min. JS PLANET 51 - PG - Family - Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and John Cleese join forces at last, providing voices for this animated feature about an alien race not so different from our own. 87 min. JS

Now Showing 2012 - PG - Thriller - A turn of the Mayan calendar wreaks global special effects-aided havoc, in what is sure to be every doomsday buff’s volcano-erupting, tidal-waving crashing wet dream. John Cusack and Woody Harrelson are among the large ensemble cast. 158 min. A CHRISTMAS CAROL & 3D - PG - Family Dickens’s tale of apparition-induced Yuletide redemption gets the CGI treatment, with Jim Carrey providing multiple voices. Of course, the last time Jim Carrey was involved in a film version of a classic children’s book, the result was The Grinch. But we’ll hold out hope. 96 min. JS A SERIOUS MAN - R - Comedy - Academy Award winning directors Joel and Ethen Cohen darkly comedic exploration of Judiasm offers insights to Life’s Big Questions. 105 min. ASTRO BOY - PG - Family - A skillful scientist creates a super-power robot in the image of his deceased son, known as Astro Boy. Still grieving, he rejects the replica he created. When aliens threaten the Earth, Astro Boy embarks on an adventure to save the planet, become famous, and reconcile with pops. 94 min. IN MY LIFE - Unrated - Comedy - A film from the Philippines, it stars Vilma Santos as (sh!t you not) Shirley Templo, a Filipino librarian who moves to New York to be closer to her estranged son, Mark (Luis Manzano). From there, the film explores the complex relationship she has with Mark’s partner Noel (John Lloyd Cruz), who helps Templo as she works through

Yes, they really stare at goats.

the frustrations of big city life. 120 min. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY - R - Horror - The same low-budget, high-yield strategy as The Blaire Witch Project (1999), this film follows a young suburban couple (Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat) who move into a seeminglynormal starter house, but soon find themselves haunted by the things that go bump in the night. So, they set up video cameras to help figure out what’s so frightening. 86 min. PIRATE RADIO - R - Comedy - A motley crew of old British rock ‘n rollers stick it to the Man via the airwaves from a boat in the middle of the North Sea. When the Man strikes back, their loyal listeners rally to the rescue. 134 min. THE BOX - PG13 - Horror - The titular item is sort of like a genie, but in addition to granting you a wish if you open it, it also kills someone. Here’s betting the couple that finds it on their doorstep chooses the less moral path, or that running time is totally unjustified. See this week’s Film Critique for more. 115 min. JS THE FOURTH KIND - PG13 - Horror - Gee, did I miss the First through Third Kinds? This is one of those inspired-by-true-events thrillers, about political shenanigans and mysterious disappearances in Alaska. (Hey, I solved the mystery: she left to go on a national book tour.) 98 min. JS THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS - R Comedy - A reporter in Iraq hooks up with a dude who claims paranormal abilities, and somewhere along the way a goat gets stared at. George Clooney, Ewan McGregor and Jeff Bridges star. 93 min. JS THIS IS IT - PG - Documentary - Drawing from over 100 hours of behind-the-scenes footage of Michael Jackson, as he prepared for the comeback he for so long, longed-for (which would have kicked-off this summer in London, at The O2 arena), this film was produced with the steadfast backing of the Michael Jackson estate. An in-depth epitaph that also pays homage to the production efforts that never fully materialized, this stunningly produced documentary is a celebration of Jackson’s life, made with fans in mind—-a non-critical look at the last life and times of one of the greatest performers of our age. 120 min. WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE - PG - Family - Director Spike Jonze teamed with Dave Eggers in creating the hip screen adaptation of this classic children’s tale, written and illustrated by the legendary Maurice Sendak. Staying true to the book’s delightfully moody palate, Jonze combines live action with CGI and (the all-too lost art of) puppeteering— bringing to life the whimsical characters beloved by so many since 1963. 94 min.

This Week's Picks Are You Ready For Some Football?

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Nov. 20 (Friday), 6pm, War Memorial Stadium, Wailuku

Nov. 20 (Friday), 5-8pm, Makawao Town

When I was in high school, I was part of the sports med. team. Everyone always referred to us as the water girls, but I did wrap ankles, ice various appendages and every so often, I was tackled by a wayward football player. Good times, good times. Of course, this did warp my view of the sport. Instead of joining in on pre- and postgame activities, I wonder about ice baths and whether or not the players are adequately hydrated. I don’t think about touchdowns or yards gained, rather my mind is filled with torn ligaments and muscle cramps. But I digress. You should definitely hit up the state championship quarterfinals football game at War Memorial, a showdown between Baldwin and Leileihua. Cheer for our players in blue and maroon, and if you really get into it, rush to their aid with water bottles and athletic tape. [Ynez Tongson]

All girls deserve a night out. Especially with the upcoming holiday season, a girl’s gotta take her joy wherever she can. Because in a few weeks, so many women will become slaves trapped in the kitchen and be forced to pretend to be happy about the accomplishments of all those other kids who aren’t theirs. (Of course, since I’m single and childless, I’ll just be pretending not to hear my relatives whisper about my eventual spinsterdom.) So, all the wahines of Maui are encouraged to get a jumpstart on their “holiday” shopping in Makawao Town, where shops will be staying open late. In addition, shops will be offering free wine tasting, grab bags and coupons. Ladies, go ahead and pamper yourselves. You deserve it. C’mon, wine tasting and shopping? It really couldn’t be better, unless the words “chocolate” and “massage” were thrown into the mix. [YT]

Need For Speed

An Evening With Elliman

Nov. 20-21 (Fri.-Sat.), 6:30pm, Maui Raceway Park, Puunene

Nov. 25 (Wednesday), 9:30pm, Gian Don’s, Kihei

I have fond memories of Maui Raceway Park, especially of watching the dirt bike races. The sun would mercilessly beat down upon my furrowed brow and dirt would permanently embed itself underneath my nails. The smell of oil and gasoline made me dizzy with anticipation, as I watched bikers fly past, their wheels seeming to barely touch the ground. If you’ve got a need for speed, Maui Raceway Park’s Seasonal Final is the place to be. Watch souped-up dragsters, street cars, sports cars and bikes (as well as pretty much anything fast that has wheels and an engine) rev their way to finish line. The event promises to be full of adrenaline and as quick as the last time you slept with your ex. Just try not to get a speeding ticket on your way there. Mrp. org [YT]

I could tell you all about the legendary Yvonne Elliman. About how this local girl went on to perform on Broadway and was nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Actress. I could tell you about how in 1974 she met Eric Clapton, sang background vocals for him and even co-wrote “Get Ready” with him. I could tell you about how she was chosen to perform the Bee Gees’ “If I Can’t Have You” for the soundtrack of Saturday Night Fever. It would be very easy to tell you that this extremely talented woman will be performing at Gian Don’s on Wednesday, and that you should definitely not miss it. Or I could tell you about what I had for lunch. I had garlic eggplant and brown rice. You decide which of those things is more interesting, and act accordingly. 874-4041, giandons.com [YT]

sign.language.astrology@gmail.com SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) How easily you Scorps seem to forget the campground rule of relationships: Leave things better off than how you found them. Unfortunately, people frequently need extended recuperation periods after emerging from relationships with Scorpios, and some never fully recover. Is that really the legacy you want? Sure, it adds to your badass reputation, but life’s already pretty painful without you adding your own personal sting to it. Don’t make any new messes this week, and consider this, too: it might not be too late to go back and clean up one or two of the disasters you’ve already had a hand in.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Make a list. I know this ies in the face of your spontaneous approach to life, but trust me: make a damn list. You can’t afford to leave things undone right now; it’s important to be sure you’ve ďŹ nished everything you said you’d start. A casual attitude won’t get you the gig, whether it’s a job or a relationship, and you won’t quite be able to charm your way out of ďŹ xes caused by your absentmindedness this week. It’s all about delivering the goods—all of them, and on time—and for that, my dear, you need to make a list.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You like to tell yourself that you have no trouble resisting temptation, but that’s a big, fat delusional lie. You got this idea because turning away from enticements other people ďŹ nd irresistible isn’t a problem for you. That’s only because the stuff other people want doesn’t have quite the same appeal for you quirky, idiosyncratic Goats. However, put the right kind of carrot in front of you, and even a stubborn old billygoat like you will wade through ďŹ re and ood to get to it. You’ve rarely actually been tempted. This week, that’s likely to change. Good luck resisting.

Things take time. Fortunately you can often predict how much time they’ll require; for example, when you break a bone, the doctor can tell you roughly how long it’ll need to be in a cast. You can plan around it. What’s screwing you over is you’re either ignoring or forgetting those timetables, and essentially scheduling a soccer game for the week after you break your leg. It doesn’t take a prophet to guess what you’ll be up for, and when. Stop trying to do shit too soon. Give yourself the time you realistically need to actually be ready for them.

Save money, time, and get the professional results you deserve; delivered right to your door.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Being entitled and selfish is ugly and despicable. However, being self-effacing to the point of martyrdom is boring and pathetic. Unfortunately, you Fish aren’t exactly experts at finding a middle ground. However, this week you should have access to a great example of the best kind of mix of two opposing impulses. Not every compromise has to be a watered down, unsatisfying version of its components. Some grant results that are far superior to anything that might have been achieved by only heeding one side or the other. Seek one of these this week, and don’t rest until you find it.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) There’s no need to prove just how tough you are—again. You’ve already demonstrated your bravery and fortitude many times. We know. What we’re more interested in is your ability (or lack thereof) to choose your battles, to back down from needless confrontations, or to gracefully give ground. These are skills many of us aren’t sure you actually have. There are some battles you just can’t win—or that you’re better off losing, ironically. This week, demonstrate that you can recognize at least some of those, and yield graciously. That’ll earn you more respect, anyway, than a victory ever could.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Recovering from a bad ďŹ rst impression can be harrowing. (“Weren’t you dancing on a table at that party with a lampshade on your head? Talk about a clichĂŠ!â€?) However, the damage is done, and can’t be undone. The bright side is that climbing up from that nadir is easy. Outshining low expectations doesn’t take much—being merely average will do. Be brilliant, sensitive, or funny, and the lampshade incident becomes a hilarious anecdote, instead of a point of mortiďŹ cation. Hint: a sense of humor can help an awful lot. We like people who can laugh at themselves.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) One Gemini friend describes his thought processes as a “constant negotiation,â€? as if two or more viewpoints were perpetually duking it out inside his head. Occasionally, as with any epic debate, you Twins can get deadlocked, and be unable to ďŹ nd a way forward. Don’t make the tempting mistake of bringing in outside help, however—the last thing you need is another opinion thrown into the mix. Sometimes only an arbitrary solution will do. If your internal deliberations are this tight, it probably doesn’t make much difference what you choose. Flip a damn coin, and get on with your day.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Here’s a familiar scenario: you’re learning to ride a bike, and you’ve almost mastered it. Sure, you still wobble a lot, and there was that embarrassing tree incident, but you’ve managed to make it up and down the block half a dozen times without serious mishap. Then Dad announces he’s going to put the training wheels back on your bike. How do you suppose that would make you feel? Well, that’s precisely the kind of message you’ve been sending. Your intentions are the best (“I don’t want you to fall over and hurt yourself!), but in this case it might be better to trust, and accept that you might be setting someone up for a painful lesson or two. Sometimes, that’s the only way to learn.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Your greatest strength (and weakness) is that you are authentically yourself in virtually any situation. Unlike some more changeable signs, many Leos aren’t especially able to play any role but their own. Recognize this. You’re not a chameleon. Trying to blend into unfamiliar surroundings goes against your nature; you’re meant to stand out and make an impact, like it or not. Knowing and accepting this about yourself is important; it can help you maximize the ways it makes you strong, bold, and exciting to be around, and minimize the ways in which it might limit you. Be you, all the time—but also know exactly who that is.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) People need me, and thus I must be there for them. This might as well be your mantra, and you strive to follow it no matter how run-down, worn-out, and wretched you are. Guess what? People will always need you, and generally, the more you give them, the more they’ll want. Learning to draw and maintain boundaries is every Virgo’s most difďŹ cult and ongoing practical lesson, one that must be learned and relearned throughout life. This week, for example, you may have to take another test on just that subject. You’ve taken it often before. Will you pass this time?

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Some people complain just to complain. For them, kvetching is an Olympic sport, and they’re all vying for golds. However, before you enter this questionable competition, I ask you: what end result do you hope for here? If you’re bitching just because you need to vent, consider who you’re dumping all that shit on, and what they did to deserve that. And if you’re whining because you want something to actually change, remember that old—and very accurate—clichÊ: you catch more ies with honey than with vinegar. Want change? Just ask for it, as sweetly and directly as possible. Want to bitch instead? Fine, but don’t expect much good to come of it.
