Damaged Reefs & Private Soldiers HYPER LOCAL Irony of the tragic kind struck last week, when the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) damaged a section of reef at Keawakapu in South Maui. The irony part comes in because DLNR did the damage while sinking large hunks of concrete meant to serve as an artificial reef habitat. In a December 3 release, the department says it has “suspended deployment of artificial reef forms while it investigates the extent of the inadvertent damage that may have been caused…” A YouTube clip showing numerous concrete pieces scattered across live coral eliminates the “may have” bit. (Go to youtube. com and search “Maui reef damage.”) Imagine if a private company had done something like this. Or don’t imagine—just think back to 2006, when a Maui Dive Shop boat destroyed a section of reef at Molokini and was later slapped with a $550,00 fine and had its commercial use permit suspended by the DLNR board. In light of that, it’ll be interesting to see what comes of DLNR’s internal investigation (those things tend to be like roads on the moon: they sound impressive but lead nowhere). For now this much is clear: this was, at best, a case of gross, counterproductive negligence…. Ah, earmarks—always good for a little campaign-season controversy. The latest example: a $3.5 million allotment requested by Rep. Neil Abercrombie for Kahuluibased Pacific Biodiesel, to grow alternative energy crops like sunflower and canola on Army land. Sounds innocent enough, but the fact that Pacific Biodisel co-owner Kelly King is connected to Abercrombie’s gubernatorial campaign muddies the water. Abercrombie spokesman Randy Obata told the Honolulu Advertiser that King is a voluntary co-chair who isn’t intimately involved in the campaign, and that to suggest unfair favoritism is “to make a connection that really isn’t there.” In the same story, King said she first lobbied for the funding before Abercrombie announced his candidacy. The whole thing may well be more molehill than mountain. But if King really did ask for Abercrombie’s help before he threw his hat in the ring, and if her involvement in the

Oh. Right.
campaign really is mostly symbolic, the wise course would have been to never become a “voluntary co-chair.” Generally best to avoid even the appearance of impropriety, especially when $3.5 million is on the line….
LOCAL I read with interest the transcript of Gov. Lingle’s December 3 radio address, in which she discussed the Honolulu rail project and the recently completed Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). To quote directly: “I have the obligation to conduct a thorough objective review of the EIS. Among the things I will review are whether all construction and design alternatives were sufficiently reviewed and whether or not the financial plan is feasible…. I take this obligation very seriously and I will not simply ‘rubber stamp’ the document. When I do receive the final EIS, I will take an appropriate amount of time to review it to ensure all the people of Hawaii will be well-served by this project now and in the future.” Sounds reasonable. After all, what kind of idiot would launch a major transportation venture without making sure it was both logistically and financially sound?… Interesting item in the December 4 Advertiser about how gun ownership in Hawaii has shot up in the early part of this century. In 2000, there were 13,600 guns registered in the state; last year, there were almost 26,000. And experts expect the number to rise even more, as Obama strikes fear into the hearts of firearm enthusiasts who believe they’d better buy ‘em now before he takes ‘em away. Here’s the

most telling quote, from Harry Gerwig II, president of the Hawaii Rifle Association: “When people don’t feel confident about the direction the country is going, they look for another way to up their confidence level.” Funny thing, that statement makes me feel less confident about the direction the country is going. So…should I buy a gun?…
NOT LOCAL The focus with both the Iraq withdrawal and the Afghanistan escalation has been on the number of U.S. troops in each country. But it’s important to remember they aren’t the only ones over there. According to Defense Department figures, as of September 30 there were 11,162 “armed private security contractor personnel” in Iraq, and another 10,712 in Afghanistan. Although our tax dollars are funding those men and women, they’re not part of our military, and thus not part of any exit strategy Obama has discussed. Most important, and disturbing, is the question of who, exactly, they’re serving…. As the latest attempt to reform health care in America crawls bludgeoned and babbling toward the finish line, the latest issue of Harper’s magazine offers one of the most incisive—and therefore depressing—critiques of the issue to date. The piece, by senior editor Luke Mitchell, convincingly casts the Democrats as stooges for the drug and insurance companies and the Republicans as jilted second fiddles, reduced to shouting incoherent platitudes from the sidelines. The concluding line is the gut punch: “It is difficult to imagine anything good coming from a system that moderates the will of corporations with the fantasies of hysterics.” ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/coconut22

Same Old, Same Old A week of meetings, one familiar story: a frustrating resistance to change
F
our separate assemblages last week showcased the bewildering extent to which Maui’s leaders are still marching in step with the old saying, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” In spite of multiple signs indicating the decay of long-standing institutions and practices, failure to heed the handwriting on the wall is hindering substantial progress, while overseers cling to the status quo like a frayed security blanket. From the thundering surf sent as a reminder of human-induced climate change to foundation-rattling economic temblors, one would think the omens would evoke timely corrective measures from our utilities, plantations and politicos. Tourism, sugar, pineapple, fossil fuel, planning strategies— all ripe for change. But due to entrenched thinking, denial, lack of vision or plain ineptitude, vital retrofits are continually put on hold. “Please listen to the music and the next available operator will assist you shortly.”
Tuesday Evening – Velma Santos Community Center, Wailuku About thirty people have gathered to offer testimony to the Board of Water Supply at the first public hearing on the longawaited Water Use and Development Plan (WDUP) for Central and South Maui. With broad implications for the future of urban development and agriculture alike, the soiree is also a prelude for the state’s final judgment on allocation for Na Wai Eha, the four great stream waters of the West Maui Mountains. Native Hawaiians, taro growers, smart growth advocates and Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar employees all have their say, though with few questions asked by water board members. Chair Michael Howden finally expresses his frustration with the Department of Water Supply for not providing requested updates on the proposed Waiale Treatment facility. If approved, that plan could divert Na Wai Eha waters for more urban uses, with HC&S parent corporation Alexander & Baldwin retaining half of a potential ninemillion gallon per day allotment—though details aren’t finalized. “It’s embarrassing,” exclaims Howden, clearly discouraged at the lack of information from the administration. Planning Director Jeffrey Hunt, however, does have something to offer—his opinion that the WDUP should wait until the County Council completes its review of the General Plan revision, which it may not tackle in earnest until after its yearly budget deliberations are finished next May. “We need to have planning based on planning [criteria],” says Hunt, “not based on water.”
Yet he must know that the two are inseparable, and that intelligent water resource guidelines are essential to sustain an agricultural component capable of feeding our residents, as well as anticipating new urban growth. Both the WDUP and the General Plan update are years overdue. The Water Board recommendations to the Council, by law, must be sent within 180 days, while the Council’s review of the Maui Island Plan must hear a final vote by October 2010. And it’s a sure bet that where water is available, development money will follow.
Wednesday Evening – Maui Waena School, Kahului The state Public Utilities Commission makes a rare appearance on the Valley Isle, conducting a public hearing required when Maui Electric Company, Inc. announced its request for a 9.7 percent rate increase, the first such adjustment in three years. According to a short blurb in the November issue of Consumer Lines, the newsletter and recipe sheet accompanying the monthly bill, the proposed increase would raise as much as $28 million more in 2010 than the current rate, to be put toward more than $122 million in “new capital projects to improve service reliability.” Among costs cited are more frequent inspections of utility poles and lines, upgrades for the Maalaea diesel generating units and “increased tree trimming around power lines for greater reliability.” But the large rate increase request—enough to add $13-$15 to the average monthly residential bill—leaves many unanswered questions. For instance, would this increase fund the proposed 70-foot tall steel poles and overhead high voltage transmission lines proposed to march from Maalaea to a new substation in South Maui? However, this isn’t a public forum or question-and-answer session with MECO— it’s a hearing on their 577-page application submitted to the PUC, bolstered by another 7,622 pages of supporting documents. Moreover, MECO didn’t publish the meeting date and time in the December issue of Consumer Lines, and thus only a handful of citizens attended. (Alas, apparently the Christmas tree lighting advice and the croissant bread pudding recipe were more important than alerting rate-payers of meetings scheduled on three islands.) West Maui resident and County Council candidate Elle Cochran asks the PUC to withhold their decision until MECO has made good faith efforts to help the public understand the details of their plans. MECO president Ed Reinhardt responds that he has an open-door policy and is glad to talk story with members of the community.
Brad Albert of Rising Sun Solar and the Hawaii PV Coalition expresses his concern that, although MECO has touted their integration of renewables into the grid, solar homeowners within five areas of Maui may be saddled with additional costs or may have their photovoltaic system denied if current net-metering ceilings are surpassed. Rule 14H stipulates that any circuit in excess of 10 percent distributed generation may necessitate a line study, paid for by the homeowner, to determine if his new system can be safely brought online without compromising the grid. Albert reports that his customers have felt discouraged and helpless. “In addition to the financial hardship,” he writes, “there is a moral injustice for those who want to offset their carbon footprint with a solar system and are denied access. We should do our best to provide equitable access to Hawaii’s solar resource.”
Thursday Pau Hana – Hoaloha Park, Kahului Creeping down Kaahumanu Avenue at afternoon rush hour, as the sun slips low in the sky, I see a big white tent set up across from the Old Kahului Shopping Center, where Ah Fooks once stood. Is it a canoe club gathering? No, season stay pau. A Christmas tree sale? Nope—no fresh-cut spruce or Douglas firs in sight. Yet a steady stream of cars drives in, and the crosswalk funnels many more to the gathering. As it turns out, it’s the A&B/HC&S/ILWU rally to remind workers to turn out at County Council the following day, where a resolution to support agriculture water allocations will be discussed. The tactic is perhaps as old as the sugar mill itself: bring people together with the lure of food, and make a show of force sure to convince elected officials. The formula has often been repeated by developers, construction unions and building contractors. But a critical thinker might question how a bean counter—in this case Chief Financial Officer Chris Benjamin, now appointed to plantation manager—can justify the expense for the tent and kau kau after projecting losses in excess of $20 million this year in A&B’s agricultural sector. It’s apparently part of an unwavering strategy of pitting plantation jobs as sacrificial lambs versus any talk of diminishing A&B’s stranglehold on surface water diversions for sugar cane irrigation and processing. Letters to the editor of The Maui News claim that stream restoration could mean the end of sugar, and 700-plus jobs. That notion is strongly refuted by Alan Murakami, attorney with Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation, representing kuleana users and taro growers who have petitioned for restoring East Maui streams. “We need to debunk this notion that the root cause of HC&S’s economic problems is the threat of taking its diverted water away,”
Murakami writes. “HC&S lost $13 million in 2008 and will lose $27 million by the end of this year—and while they have the water! “Its problems are more with the global markets and the lower costs of producing sugar elsewhere, especially in Asia,” he continues. “That’s what all the other major plantations found out in the past three decades. HC&S wants the water so it can later convert its lands to whatever alternative developments it will pursue.”
Friday Morning – County Council Chambers, Wailuku In a move that many deemed politically motivated in support of A&B and the sugar plantation, County Council hears testimony for and against a resolution that would urge the state Commission for Water Resource Management to “consider the importance of agricultural uses,” while setting instream flow standards for Na Wai Eha surface water diversions. Some felt the plantation’s influence had reached beyond the opinion page and the rally of the previous night, all the way to the 8th floor of the County building. Chair Danny Mateo defends the resolution, calling it beneficial to both small farmers and the larger struggling sugar cane operations. ‘Iao Valley taro farmer John Duey says the resolution was after-the fact, since the CWRM has studied the matter for three years, already considered current and potential uses and issued preliminary standards in October that could restore nearly half of the current diversions. Other testifiers remind the Council that healthy stream flows greatly recharge the overtapped ‘Iao aquifer, the primary source of potable water throughout Central and South Maui. Community watchdog Lucienne de Naie draws upon her years of water studies to propose several new “whereas” sections and to add several “missing facts” to the resolution. In the end, the Council sends the proposed matter to committee, where it will likely be rendered impotent.
I
n the absence of visionary leadership to help bridge the gap from the withering status quo to a new “Green Economy,” local residents must look elsewhere to fulfill the promises for local food security, renewable energy and a revitalized, diversified economy. Indeed, grassroots community efforts and entrepreneurial undertakings might prove more effective than slow-paced government initiatives. And frustrated citizens might get off their okoles to vote in new leadership in 2010. It could happen. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/rr22

Veteran marathoner Jerry Johncock, 81, was four-fifths through the Twin Cities Marathon in October when he was overtaken by a medical problem common to men of his age: urinary blockage. As he stopped to discuss his plight with officials, noting that he would have to quit the race to get to a hospital before his bladder burst, a spectator overheard the conversation and offered him the use of a “spare” catheter he had in his car. Johncock repaired to a rest room, administered the catheter, and returned to finish the race.

In October, Poland’s Polskieradio reported a settlement in the 18-month legal battle between two neighbors in Mikowice over a plastic bucket worth about $4.50. One had sued, accusing the other of ruining the bucket by kicking it. The respondent had elaborately offered proof of innocence by submitting video of the neighbor continuing to use the bucket as before, but the neighbor had countered by calling an “expert” witness, who examined the bucket and concluded that it was probably damaged.

In October in Orange County, California, Billy Joe Johnson, who had just been convicted of murder as a hit man for a white supremacist gang, begged the judge and jury, in all sincerity, to sentence him to death. Johnson knew that those on California’s death row get individual cells and better telephone access, nicer contact-visit arrangements, and more personal-property privileges than ordinary inmates. The Los Angeles Times reported that the state’s spending per death-row inmate is almost three times that for other inmates. The current death-row census totals 685, but because of legal issues, only 13 have been executed since 1977 (compared to 71 death-row fatalities from other causes). In fact, Johnson was so eager to be put on death row that he tried to confess to two murders that no one yet knew about.

Re the December 3 feature “The Best Defense?”: This is an important article. Thank you for doing the diligence. What defense does the state have for cutting the public defender’s office and not the prosecutors? Who benefits? The prison system gets more prisoners for longer. I’d hate to think that the economics of the situation have anything to do with this. Thanks again for the article; I don’t know who else on Maui would present this. FERAL CATS ARE RUNNING RAMPANT ON MAUI, THREATENING NATIVE SPECIES AND SPREADING DISEASE. IS THERE A SOLUTION—OR ARE THEY HERE TO STAY? PG.12
they decided to build their homes next to our roads! Who cares what we do to other animals, like dropping off kittens in the park because we’re too stupid to have the parents fixed, or we just changed our minds about having a cat in our family—like a lamp, just get rid of it. It’s rare to get a disease from a cat, yet we actually get diseases daily from the food we buy at the store or at salad bars and restaurants, but who cares. If we scare people enough through fear of something rare, all the better! Just like wolves: Little Red Riding Hood, the Three Pigs—we scared people from childhood that wolves were bad and we almost got rid of all of them. Let’s blame everything on the cats!
QUOTE OF THE WEEK:“Their fathers were a gay vulture couple that was eventually separated and paired with females...” pg.9
Ed. Note: Good catch, Legendary Yeti, if that is your real name.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “Included were 43 explosives, a 10-point deer antler, a baby alligator and ‘unwashed adult toys’...” pg.9
To be fair, when talking about the funding disparity one should know that the Prosecuting Attorney’s offices are Countyfunded, whereas the Public Defender’s office is state-funded. If furloughs and/or layoffs
Re the November 19 feature “Invasive Species”: People who take care of feral cats have to be crazy! I mean why would anyone actually show compassion for an innocent creature that was forced to live on its own, just trying to survive in a place it didn’t chose to live. Who cares that these people are actually doing a good thing by having these animals fixed and tested for diseases, stopping pain and suffering. Who cares that it has been proven over and over again that “trap, neuter, return” is the only way to really control a feral population. Who cares that people are the real invasive species, that humans do more damage to native species than everything else combined. We need a scapegoat so we can ignore anything bad we do, whether to native species like birds by building roads and buildings in their natural nesting areas, driving too fast, hitting owls and other birds, or driving over baby turtles. You wrote: “Forty-six years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court heard the story of Clarence Earl Wainwright...” Better do some more research. You’re thinking of Clarence Earl Gideon. The famous case is Gideon v. Wainwright. Mr. Wainwright was the head of the state prison system that was incarcerating Mr. Gideon at the time. See Gideon’s Trumpet, by Anthony Lewis.

Re the December 3 Spin Cycle about Matson Navigation raising its rates: Nailed it! That’s spooky how close this is to the soundbite from MECO along with last month’s bill and their request for a 9.7 percent rate increase: “We know that these are challenging times and understand that any increase is difficult for our customers,” said Maui Electric Company President Ed Reinhardt. “We’ve made concerted efforts to contain costs and improve efficiency, but we must also make the investments to fulfill our responsibility to provide reliable service to our customers.”

A simple friendly remark could’ve handled the situation, but instead you had to show your nachomacho in front of the luau girls. You had nothing against me legally, yet you acted as if you wanted to fight! You’re a fat slob who needs to realize that to be happy you have to be nice to people—me skateboarding didn’t hurt anything and should not have offended you so harshly. hey say it’s the thought that counts. Of course, that’s not always true—every year we all get a few gifts that make us wish the person had thought a little harder, or not at all. But here’s a thought everyone can rally around: local. As we’ve told you before, keeping your holiday dollars on Maui has a big impact. According to estimates from the research firm Civic Economics, if every reader of MauiTime spent $100 at a locally owned business instead of a corporate chain, it’d mean an extra $2 million staying on-island to boost our sagging economy, instead of flitting off to the Mainland or some foreign destination. It’s a pretty simple thing, really, and we’re here to make it even simpler. In the following pages, you’ll find an array of gift ideas—some locally made, all locally sold—to suit everyone on your list. From sandals and surf gear to music and massages to dresses and drinks, they’re all good thoughts—you can count on it. ➔

SWEETS & EATS The holidays are basically an elaborate excuse to stuff our faces, so why not embrace it and give the gift of…more food? Tucked away near the overpass in Wailuku, 1 Stillwell’s Bakery is unassuming but awesome. Their muffins are kickass—not a superlative generally attached to muffins, but fitting in this case—and their cream horns are borderline illegal. Also in Wailuku, Four Sisters Bakery features pies that are (don’t tell Mom) better than homemade. Since both Stillwell’s and Four Sisters routinely sell out of their top items, it’s good to have both options (and good to show up early). Upcountry, T. Komoda Store & Bakery will hook you up with cream puffs that, actually, probably won’t make the best gifts because you’ll eat them in the car on the way home. We’ve focused mostly on sweets, but of course there’s lots of other choice grinds, both made and sold locally. Your best bet? Pick your favorite locally owned eatery (upscale, exotic, local-style, whatever) and buy a gift certificate (enough for dinner and drinks for two) and offer that child-weary couple in your life a night of babysitting. The joy and relief in their sleep-deprived eyes will be all the reward you need.

TOYS Shopping locally for the short people on your list is a tall order. They’re bombarded with images of the latest corporate, Disneybranded bit of plastic, to the point where it’s easy to throw up your hands and give in. But Maui is home to a couple of cool toy stores that actually carry stuff your keiki will like. Maui Toy Works has been offering Valley
Isle parents a local option for a quartercentury. One thing they’re famous for is kites, which is an underrated island activity. In Central Maui, Wild Creatures has organic cotton clothes…but what kid wants clothes? Instead, get a wooden toy or a game made from bamboo, or even—gasp!—a book (just tell them it’s the original video game).
MUSIC
(AND MORE) It’s a good thing 2 Requests Music is so awesome, because it’s also Maui’s only locally owned record store. Actually, it’s more than that. It’s a music mecca, a lovable, disheveled mishmash of CDs, vinyl, used DVDs, books, quirky T-shirts, knick-knacks and, most importantly, knowledge. It’s the kind of place where you go in thinking you want one thing, and walk out with something else that’s way cooler. Especially if you’re shopping for a person with very specific, refined tastes, this is the spot: online vendors and corporate chains simply can’t match the passion and history that oozes from the staple-and poster-covered double doors of Requests. Rock on. If you and the peeps you’re shopping for want to make your own music—be it with keyboards, ukuleles, guitars or drums— 3 Bounty Music is tuned into your needs. For keiki, they have harmonicas, baby drums, shakers (the fruit and veggie ones are awesome) and kazoos. Other options include Mele Ukulele and Lahaina Sound.
SMOKING ACCESSORIES It’s a dilemma we’ve all faced: Grandma wants a new pipe for Christmas, but she insists it be locally made. Where to turn? 4 Westside
Vibes is an excellent place to start. Even if you don’t happen to live on the West side, perusing the wares at this laid-back smoke emporium is well worth a trip (pun intended) around the pali. From glass pieces (some of them by local artists) to stash cans to lighters to T-shirts to incense to…well, you get the idea. It’s Maui’s biggest head shop, with a huge selection and super-cool staff (but then, of course they’d be). South Mauians have their pick of Hawaiian Holy Smokes (yeah, OK, they’ve got locations in Oahu and the Big Island, but they keep it Hawaii) and Maui Mana, both convenient, reputable and well-stocked. And Paia wouldn’t be Paia without an array of pipebuying options, though you may find yourself most drawn in by the non-smokable goods at the Hemp House (see Body Products).
BOOZE Got a wine snob/aficionado on your list, but don’t know a Cabernet from a hole in the ground? Pop into 5 The Wine Corner in Paia and/or Lahaina for expert guidance. Any place that installs climate-adjusted walk-in wine cellars has to be serious, plus they carry a decent selection of micro brews, some of them hard-to-find. Those who stick to South Maui probably already know about Wailea Wine, but for the rest: they’ve got a nice variety on-hand and can generally get what you want even if they don’t have it; good option if you’re throwing a holiday party. Also in South Maui, check out Valley Isle Liquors if you want your booze locally made, you’ve got a few options. 6 Maui Brewing Co., the island’s only brewery, has a variety of not-sold-in-stores concoctions that’ll bring a smile to the suds-coated lips of the hops-head in your life. We recommend the growler, a half-gallon jug that can be refilled as needed at the source—the brew pub in

Kahana—with any of the sundry ales on tap. For made-on-Maui wine, head Upcountry to 6 Tedeschi Winery and grab a bottle of Pineapple blanc, a fruit-forward (duh) favorite. (They hold daily tastings, meaning you can sample before you buy.) It ain’t Russia, but Maui does have two local vodkas: 6 Ocean Vodka, which you probably know about, and 6 Pau Maui Vodka, which you might not. The latter is on the pricier side, but comes in a super-cool bottle, and, purists take note, doesn’t actually taste like pineapple, but instead uses the fruit to make, in the words of distiller Mark Nigbur “a nice, clean mash. Of course, the drink most readily associated with the tropics is rum. For that, turn to 6 Haleakala Distillers and their award-winning Braddah Kimo’s line, guaranteed to put hair on your chest (don’t worry ladies—it’s only temporary).
THERAPEUTIC SERVICES Odds are, someone you know needs a little pampering (and maybe that someone is you). Green Ti in Wailuku is the final word on massages. They offer Swedish, deep tissue and specialty treatments like lomi lomi, pre-natal, reflexology, shiatsu and reiki. If you’re looking for a facial, check out Maui Hair and Body. Their beauty technicians will get you—I mean, your special someone—cleansed, exfoliated and relaxed during this stressful holiday season. Need some digital love (No, not that kind!)? Try a Van Beauty Salon mani-pedi gift card. If you’ve got the dough, go all out and book a whole spa day. Soleil Luna Spa and Salon is the perfect place to spend a day of decadence. Finally, Sasha and Katherine of 7 Island Girl Pin-Ups are guaranteed to make your gift recipient feel like
a retro goddess. (Don’t believe us? Check out the cover of this issue). Nothing says glamour like having your hair and make-up done, getting dressed up and having your picture taken. Better still, book an appointment for yourself and send out the pictures as gifts.
PET SUPPLIES Shopping for a pet owner is nice, because the person (OK, animal) that actually receives the gift can’t speak, meaning even if they hate it, you’re off the hook. Fortunately, with the great pet shops we have on-island, that shouldn’t be an issue. Birken and Bailey’s Too in Kihei sells Maui Wowie organic catnip, purrfect (sorry, couldn’t resist) to shut up your friend’s mouthy feline. Or grab some of those delicious pig’s ears dogs drool over. If you’re on the West side, check out West Maui Pet Supply, while in Central Maui, Pouchi Couture has products for the fashionforward members of the four-legged set.
ART
want to decorate your tree with handmade Hawaii-themed Christmas ornaments? Stop by A Piece of Maui’s booth. Want to send your relatives on the Mainland a tiki? Check out M.T. Veatupu at the ‘Tau’ Master Island Woodcarving booth. Is glasswork more your style? Go to Maui Etched Glass and Dody Bowman’s booths. What about a frame for all those precious moments you intend to capture with your camera? Robb Starr’s handmade frames have you covered. Something scented for that young hippie couple on your street? Allow us to recommend Maui “Fresh Incense and Maui Mana Oils. Have a scrapbooker in the family? Make sure to visit Scrapbook, Frames & Accessories by Elisha. As you’ve surely been convinced, the Kahului Swap Meet is the place to find crafts ranging from pet coconuts to handmade Maui Bud Bowls. Vendors change regularly, so visit often.

The world would be a better place if everyone wanted art for Christmas. That day may never come, but if anyone on your list wants art, start at Maui Hands, which features the work of more than 300 (!) Maui artists. They have shops in Paia, Kahului and Lahaina, or find them online at mauihands.com. For modern art, head over to the 8 Paia Contemporary Gallery and check out Maui artist Brad Huck. A couple other local hotspots for artsy gifts: the Hui No‘eau and the Lahaina Art Society’s gallery in the Old Courthouse.
Dreaming of a holiday home makeover, where Ty Pennington comes over and remodels? Well, keep dreaming. In reality, go for the comfy Edison saddle chair and ottoman from Serendipity Home—simple and streamlined and just perfect with a book. More furniture can be found this month at the Schaefer International Galler, where local furniture makers have been commissioned to make dream pieces. Other options: Futon Lifestyles, featuring natural bamboo designs, Affordable Furniture and Ilin’s New & Used in Wailuku.

luxurious, with an amazing palette of colors to suit any taste. The attention to detail in their recycled fabric blanket is incredible, with thousands of stitches holding the super-soft layers of cotton together. Stoke the paniolo in your life with the wrought iron horseshoe hooks and towel rack at The Aloha Cowboy Store. Collections in Makawao features an array of one-of-a-kind items like aprons, pillows and magnets, while Banana Wind on the West side specializes in shells and ocean-made objects.
NATURAL JEWELRY Kahului Swap Meet to the rescue again. A favorite option is Jim and Revi Shepard, who have an estate jewelry booth. While they specialize in antiques and paintings, you’ll find an abundance of jewelry made from bone, shell, wood and various semi-precious stones (coral, turquoise, amber, etc). This isn’t mere jewelry; these are “pieces.” As in, “This piece would look beautiful with the skirt I bought from Bohemia Boutique.” Also worth checking out: Verda, who designs beautiful mother of pearl earrings that are lightweight and sturdy enough to go surfing in. We’re also fiercely loyal to the man who sells the beautiful Tibetan-themed wood and bone jewelry, although, with the frequent rotation of swap meet vendors, we haven’t been able to find him in our last two visits. Learn from that mistake: If you see something you really want, get it before it’s gone. And at swap meet prices, you’ll probably be able to afford it.
MEN’S JEWELRY Buying jewelry for a man can be tricky. If
the guy you’re shopping for is still rocking a hemp necklace, take it up a notch and get him a Morphic Designs created-on-Maui skull ring. They come in gold and silver, and some feature a gem in the eye socket or a moving jaw. These unique pieces are made-to-order; see the process at morphicdesigns.com.
WOMEN’S JEWELRY At Wings Hawaii, the jewelry designer is likely to be the same person behind the counter helping you. Their lucky necklace is a great gift—a bit of sunshine from Maui. They also carry delicate gem and shell necklaces strung on gold and silver chains. Another good option is Maui jewelry maker 9 Nina Lee, whose winter seas necklace can be found online (ninakuna.com), with free shipping, complimentary wrapping and messaging and kama‘aina discounts available. Other shops carrying eye-catching jewelry include Pink by Nature in Makawao and Oh Baby in Lahaina. For a great selection of local artisan jewelry, head under the Lahaina Banyan tree for jewelers such as 10 Lisa Marie Leasenfeld of Hooked on Maui. Open most weekends, local artists gather to show and sell their work.
CONSIGNMENT GOODS
The best thing about 11 Bohemia Boutique is that they take designer outfits and assemble them for you. Liked that ensemble you saw in Vogue? The girls at Bohemia Boutique probably already have it waiting for you, at a much lower price. For fans of the LBD (little black dress), they often have dazzling examples on display.
Elise Clothing Co. in Kahului also has an amazing selection of consignment goods, organized and easy to browse through, while on the South side, Rainbow Attic has got your back (and backside) covered.
SURF & WATER SPORT GEAR If you don’t have at least one surfer or water sport enthusiast on your list, you need to make more friends. And whether they’re wishing for a new board or just a replenishing of accessories—wax, fins, leashes, board shorts, paddles, racks, etc.— Maui is, of course, blessed with several shops brimming with both goods and knowledge. Best of Maui-winning 12 HiTech is a local institution, and for good reason. Their selection is surpassed by their passion; stop in to talk story and come out with whatever you’re looking for (or, if you don’t know what you’re looking for, they offer gift certificates). If you’re buying for a windsurfer, check out Second Wind in Kahului. Like Hi-Tech, they’re staffed with folks who, when they aren’t behind the counter, are out on the water. Ditto Naish Maui Pro Center, which some hard-core kite-boarders swear by. For the stand-up paddler, pop into Hawaii Island Surf & Sport, or get something to stick under your favorite bodyboarder’s tree at the Foam Company. Another, pricier option is to order a 13 custom board from one of Maui’s many legendary shapers. It won’t come cheap, but if you’ve got a hard-core surfer who’s been very nice this year, it’s a sure fire way to keep them stoked into the New Year.

These handcrafted wood shoes are equal parts chic and comfort, and won’t wear out. It won’t exactly be a surprise, but you can get handmade leather sandals at Island Sandals in the Wharf, made to fit with a line drawn around the wearer’s foot and the shoe built from scratch. Historical note: the design dates back to the Byzantium. Hey, if it worked for Jesus‌
T-SHIRTS (MEN’S)
Tees are the man uniform of Maui. At Urban City, the registered Star Wars-design Mark Echo shirts are a Force to be reckoned with. DRESS SHIRTS (MEN’S)
Every man needs a dress shirt, even on Maui. Go for short sleeve styles in the tropics with a
natural fabric. Where to find them? Try Him in Kahana. Owner Jefferson Wery cherry-picks the cool stuff and offers it to his clientele at a solid price. If you need the bright aloha print, you seriously can’t find a better selection than Maui Shirts. Their showroom in West Maui is open in the afternoon, but it’s easier to check them out at mauishirts.com. Shopping for one big bugga? No worries—their shirt sizes go to 5x and 6x.
BOARDSHORTS (MEN’S)
Shopping for boardshorts is more technical than you might think. With Velcro, without Velcro; above the knees, below the knees. Figure it out, and head to 15 Hi-Tech with the specs. They have a large selection of different styles in all sizes, and you can get plenty of advice from their staff. You’ll also find a great selection at Honolua Surf, which has locations islandwide.

EVENING WEAR (WOMEN’S)
Here’s a timeless romantic gift idea that’s basically guaranteed to “workâ€? if you catch our drift (and we think you do): two tickets to a swanky fundraiser and a fancy dress. Start on Market Street with the well-priced Sue Wong line of dresses at If the Shoe Fits. If that isn’t over-the-top enough, head to the Shops at Wailea for the belle of the ball embellishments at Enchantress and FiďŹ & Bootzie. If you prefer a simple statement the Little Black Dress in Kihei has got what you need.
CABANA CASUAL WEAR (WOMEN’S) Maui designer Tamara Katz has made her name with breezy island styles, featuring embroidered and beaded designs. With her recent fall launch displayed in her Paia store, it’s all too easy to find gifts, like the “Maui tanks that all your Mainland friends will covet. Maggie Coulombe is another Valley Isle designer with a Maui-only boutique filled with her fascinating convertible designs. One garment worn many ways is a gift that keeps on giving.

INDEX
Support local artisans and stewards of Hawaiian culture by shopping at 18 Native Intelligence. Store owner Jenny says they strive to be more than a high-end Hawaiian gift shop by stepping outside the box—the ever-popular Koa box that is. By offering hula implements, books, pahu drums, lei hulu, Hawaiian weaponry and many other important but lesser-known items, Native Intelligence’s goal is to bring more aspects of Hawaiian culture to the forefront. And, perhaps, to your stocking. ■

Franning the Flame Former Boston lead singer keeps the fire burning Fran Cosmo feat. Anthony Cosmo Maui gig: Saturday, December 12, 7:30pm at the Castle Theater, MACC, Kahului $25-$85; 242-SHOW or mauiarts.org
I
t figures that when I get to interview someone as famous as Fran Cosmo, I’d have a cold. It’s tough to sound charming and elegant when you can only speak in vowels. When I asked if he had any favorite cold remedies that he’d like to share, he just laughed and said, “I knew you had a cold! You sound like ‘Mwah mwah mwah!’” Fran, on the other hand, sounded impeccable, his New York accent as smooth as budda. (It took all my tact to keep from asking him to say, “Fuggedaboutit!”) If you’re at all familiar with classic rock you know about Fran Cosmo. In case you’re not: Cosmo is the former lead singer of the band Boston, which he performed with for more than a decade beginning in the early ’90s. He’s also toured with Orion the Hunter and WCR (World Classic Rockers). Currently, he’s touring with his son, Anthony Cosmo, also formerly of Boston. He’s just released a Boston greatest hits compilation, and will be dropping another album in time for Christmas. And, with an assist from Tammy Miranda Productions, he’s coming to Maui to play the MACC this weekend. As you can tell, Fran Cosmo is pretty freakin’ rock star. So it was strange to hear someone of his status tell me that he hadn’t finished his Christmas shopping. “Yeah, when you’ve got an 8-year-old daughter,
Cosmo is livin' for you.
you’ve got a lot of Christmas shopping to do,” he said. Exactly how does it feel to be a rock star? According to Fran, “It’s like being anything else. It doesn’t feel any different to me. It doesn’t affect me. It’s just what I am.” Of course, it may be what he is, but it’s not
what he’s always been. Once upon a time, he was just a kid listening to the Beatles. “When I was younger, I looked up to the Beatles,” he said. “But I first became really interested in music when I saw my older cousin play in a band. I wanted to be just like him.” The rest is history. Young Francis went on

to become Fran Cosmo and tour the world. “My favorite venue was playing with WCR in China,” he remembers. “The people, the culture, it was so different from here.” Of course, his story could have had a different ending. I asked Fran what he would be doing if he hadn’t become a rock star. “Maybe I woulda been an artist. I wanted to go to college for art. Or maybe I’d be building homes. Maybe theater. Who knows?” Perhaps you’re wondering if Cosmo is his real last name. It is—sort of. “I was born with the name,” Fran confirmed. “It’s my middle name. I was named after two saints, St. Francis and St. Cosmo. In the ’80s, I took Cosmo as my last name. People are always saying it’s ’cause I’m outta this world, but it’s my real name.” (His given last name, if you’re wondering, is Migliaccio.) Even so, Fran definitely is out of this world, as are his performances. He sums it up simply: “Basically, I want people to feel like they had a good show. I want them to feel like the show was intense.” Fran’s favorite song to perform is “Livin’ For You.” “It’s the only live song on the [greatest hits] album we just finished,” he said. “When I was playing with Boston, the audience would hold a huge Italian flag— I’m Italian—so it’s a big song for me.” So Maui—if The Cosmo Band plays “Livin’ For You” at their MACC performance (and it’s a safe bet they will) you know what to do. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/music22

No Croak Disney’s return to traditional animation shows promise despite warts The Princess and the Frog
as a waitress and hopes to one day open her own restaurant. When a suave prince comes to town, her dreams of living happily ever after are blocked by the Shadow Man, a witch doctor whose spell turns both Tiana and her prince-charming-to-be into amphibians. This is the first Disney animated film to feature a predominantly African American cast. It’s an overdue milestone,
★★★★★
Twenty years ago, the second golden age of animated movies began at Disney when, after years of uninspired features, The Little Mermaid premiered in 1989. Following that winning mix of beautiful animation, solid character development and an enchanting story, the Mouse House released Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King, a string of undisputed masterpieces. With the animation field now dominated by computers—Disney hasn’t released a hand-drawn animated film in five years— there is a lot riding on the success of The Princess and The Frog, a return to the classic Disney style. I’m happy to report that, while the film is a mixed bag, for the most part it lives up to its “event” status. The story takes place in New Orleans, where a young woman named Tiana works

but doesn’t mean very much since most of the characters are stock-figure clichés. Meanwhile, the appealing heroine gets crippled by the plot—soon after Disney introduces its first African American lead, they turn her into a frog. The film is gorgeous, vivid and colorful, and is buoyed by a pair of bring-down-thehouse musical numbers. I found the side
characters funnier and more interesting than the love-struck leads, though I expected more from the writers than easy butt and fart jokes that even the Genie from Aladdin would have left alone. Older kids will love this, especially those who grew up in the days before Buzz Lightyear and his CGI cronies took over the playing field. Young keiki will find the voodoo and demonic shadow creatures terrifying and there’s also a tragic twist late in the story that will upset many. Parents need to look past the G-rating and seriously consider how intense this will play for the very young. This isn’t a total knockout, but the best scenes are stunners and it’s certainly a step in the right direction for Disney’s non-Pixar animation arm. It feels like a warm-up for a grand classic on its way. My three-star rating isn’t a rave, but a cautiously optimistic recommendation, and a hope for a dazzler around the corner. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/film22

True story: I wrestled with Kris Kristofferson’s son. I don’t mean against him or anything, we were just in the MIL at the same time. Actually, I’m pretty sure Jody’s a professional wrestler now. If anything, that should be a testament to how spectacular Hana High School and Hana Athletics are. So, if you attend this beneďŹ t event, not only will you be supporting Hana High and its athletic department, you’ll be treated to Kris Kristofferson performing songs from his newest album, Closer to the Bone. A silent auction will precede the concert, with priceless memorabilia, guitars and specialty items up for bidding. $20/$35/$50, and a limited number of Gold Circle Tickets at $300. 242-SHOW or www.mauiarts.org [Ynez Tongson]

Time to bust out the patchouli oil and sandals. Has anyone seen my white Fair Trade yoga pants? Oh wait, there they are. Shoot, all my bras are in the laundry—that’s fine I’ll just go without one. Why all the excitement? Well (wait for it‌) Krishna Das will be holding a concert at The Studio. Krishna Das, for those unfamiliar, is a world-renowned chant master and is the best-known U.S. vocalist of kirtan, or Indian devotional music. According to the New York Times, his concerts are “a mix of religious revival meeting, a Grateful Dead concert and summer camp.â€? (If that’s true, I’ll be packing my organic pepper spray in my hemp bag.) Teasing aside, Krishna Das’s chanting is beautiful, spiritual and altogether calming. And since I’m pretty much just nerves held together by spit and coffee, that’s saying something. $25 presale, $30 door thestudiomaui.com [YT]

Tree at Last
December 11 (Friday), 9pm & 10:30pm, Hard Rock Cafe, Lahaina
This is such an awesome idea that I can’t even make fun of it. Instead of cutting down a tree this Christmas or buying an imported one, you can decorate a live, potted and locally grown tree, courtesy of the Makawao-based Permaculture Group. And when the holidays are over, you can plant it! This is good because: a) you’ll be helping the environment; b) you’ll be giving native plants a chance to thrive; c) you’ll be helping attract native birds; d) it’ll help with Maui’s watershed; and e) you won’t have to spend all your time cleaning up pine needles. But seriously, this is an amazing idea. Choose between ohi‘a lehua (endemic), kulu‘i (endemic and endangered), and ha‘o. To order or get more info, call 250-1469 or check out permaculturegroup.com [YT]

Slip ‘Em a Mickey I’m kinda embarrassed to say this, but I’m a huge fan of Mickey Avalon. He reminds me of my last boyfriend: dark, lewd and full of substance abuse and criminal charges. I’m surprised his performance here isn’t getting more press coverage (Avalon, not my ex—but hey, if Avalon is interested in being my next ex-boyfriend, that’s fine with me, too). Avalon’s music focuses heavily on his past on the streets, drug use and prostitution involvement. If you like your music sounding like it just rolled out of bed (make up still smeared on from the night before), after having a cigarette for breakfast, definitely make time for this one. $35 presale, $40 door. 667-7400 [YT]

sign.language.astrology@gmail.com SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) You’ve set the ball in motion for change, and of course you’re terrified. However, I admire your courage, proceeding despite your fears. Since you can’t know what will happen next, it’s brave of you to go ahead anyway. Just trust your gut. It’s served you well in the past, and things have generally always more or less worked out before. They will again—though, as usual, probably not in ways you can predict. Never mind the anxiety—it’s normal, and far preferable to the alternative; staying stationary, safe, and predictable (read: boring) just isn’t your style.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) While your Sagittarian neighbors are famously big risk-takers, you’re no slouch in that department, even if you get less press for it. They may be far more likely to engage in leaps of faith, but that doesn’t mean you never put everything on the line. You’re just much more calculated about it. You know well enough that there’s no such thing as a sure thing, but gambling big when the odds are in your favor is just the kind of action that turns you on. This week you get to show off your chutzpah yet again. Do you still have the guts to take a big (albeit premeditated) risk?

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) You have a knack for making things easy. You’re easy to spend time with, and even when there’s a conflict, you usually find a way to resolve it as painlessly as possible for all concerned. That’s a rare and powerful talent, and one that should come in handy this week. Don’t sell yourself short—social intelligence is just as valid (and more apt to bring you success) than the ability to perform complex math equations or learn three foreign languages. You’re brilliant in lots of ways—but your talent for interaction is what’ll serve you best this week.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) A woman drove her car into a friend of mine in a parking lot yesterday. (Luckily, he wasn’t hurt.) Rolling down her window, she didn’t apologize or inquire if he was alright. Instead she simply snapped: “Is my car okay?” When he nodded, she simply rolled up her tinted window and drove off. I don’t know how you get to be this kind of awful person, but you Fish should consider yourselves lucky; it’s unlikely you ever will. Your compassion for others is, ultimately, a great strength. Even though it may feel like it’s holding you back a little this week, try to remember that.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) This week I’m going to reiterate advice I’ve given you before, because I think you may need reminding. Being happy as an Aries is fairly simple: Always, always put yourself out there, and simply ask for what you want, boldly and without censoring yourself. Sure, you’ll get rejected some (or even most) of the time, but the more you practice, the better you’ll be at it—and the more often you’ll get exactly what you want, and more. Many people are ready and willing to deliver, but they’re too shy or self-doubting to just offer out of the blue. You can’t afford to be shy, or nothing will ever happen. Go for it.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) A watched pot never boils, or so they say. Unfortunately, this kind of lame philosophy keeps you from taking action all too often. While it’s true that there are certain processes you can do nothing to accelerate (and your efforts to keep tabs on them may actually slow them down), the situation before you isn’t one of them. There is, in fact, much you could do to help move things along, only you’re too worried your involvement will just trip things up. It won’t. Forego your famous patience and simply jump right in. You’re needed.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Make sure you know what’s yours and what belongs to everyone else. I’m not referring to your stuff so much as your responsibilities. Although it might be tempting when the opportunity presents itself this week, shoving off your duties on someone else isn’t the way to go. Not only are they likely to screw it up (which will come back to bite you in the ass), it’s also just not fair. This is stuff you took on, and you should be cool with following through. If you’ve already unloaded it on someone else, go and pick it back up, pronto. It’s still not too late.
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Don’t be bitter. Because of your general emotional sensitivity, you’ll probably get what feels like the short end of the stick this week. Instead of harping on (out loud or in your head) about what a bum deal you’re getting, try to think of this as an opportunity to demonstrate just how amazing you are at making the most out of what you have. You’re actually quite talented in this regard, when you’re not too busy bitching and moaning about the general unfairness of it all. Show off your skills. We’ll be suitably impressed, I promise.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Leos can change, of course. It may take a little more work to undergo self-transformation than, say, a Gemini or a Pisces, but naturally anything you set your powerful will to is possible. However, if the change is to please another person, it won’t stick unless it ultimately makes you more joyful than you were before. You’ll backslide, and resentment will rear its ugly head. Be open-minded, be flexible, but also be realistic. If changing for someone else has a reasonable chance at making you a happier, better person, go for it. If that’s not likely, though, you’re better off sticking to your guns.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) There are rites of passage that you can safely avoid, like going to prom or having a baby, but there are others (losing a loved one, getting your heart broken, or breaking someone’s heart) that are simply inevitable. Stop running from them; in your attempts to flee, it makes them more painful for all concerned. Instead, accept them with as much grace as you can muster and think of what you can do, not to change the unalterable facts, but to make them easier for yourself and others to cope with and move on from.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) It’s true, Libras aren’t my favorite sign (but some Libras are my favorite people). Unfortunately, too many Libras, in their quest for balance, avoid extremes. It’s easier to achieve equilibrium if there’s not much on the scale. What can I say? Middle of the road types bore me; I’m fascinated with those who thrill themselves and others with their choices, and would never use the words “normal,” “average,” or “regular,” to describe themselves. Now, there are Libras who are able to embrace wild extremes and find balance with an elephant on one side of the scale and a grand piano on the other. That’s exciting. Be normal and low-key if you want, but I’ll always contend that you’re not exactly exploring your best potential.
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) It seems as if your choices have devolved to three: climb this mountain, bulldoze it flat, or walk away from it altogether. How you address this particular quandary will tell you a lot about what kind of place you’re in now, in your life. This problem is surmountable with a great deal of effort. You could also demolish it entirely, but you’d also destroy the growth and accomplishment you could reap by transcending it (and miss out on the great big picture view you’d get from up there). Walking away, of course, is probably the least constructive of the three. Then again, it requires the least effort. What’s it going to be?
