RISING FROM THE

IN

3D!

WELCOME TO 3D. Two dimensions are so last year. Whether you’re watching those big blue cat people jump around on Pandora, oogling a Playboy centerfold or even reading a damn children’s book, chances are you’re doing it in 3D. So why shouldn’t Best of Maui—our biggest, boldest, most popular issue of the year—get in on the extra dimensional action? Of course, saying you’re going to put together an 80-page 3D newspaper is one thing; doing it is something else. (Something we’re pretty sure has never been attempted.) And we won’t pretend it was easy. This issue always kicks our collective butt, but this year the butt-kicking was taken to a new stratosphere. Honestly, we’re not even sure we still have butts.

And yet, you’re worth it. All of you—the readers, the winners. We love you guys. Oh, we know in the following pages you’ll find inclusions and omissions to quibble with; you always do. And we welcome your feedback, good, bad and indifferent. Of course, our not-so-secret hope is that you’ll be so blown away by all the eye-melting 3D you’ll forget about everything else. Our new motto—once you go 3D, it’s the only way you’ll want to see. Enjoy.

GOODS & SERVICES Best Local Clothing Designer BEST LOCAL BOUTIQUE Maui Thing

Mahina Boutique

MauiTime readers are stuck on the goodness that is Maui Thing. And thank goodness for them, too! It’s been a long time coming for Mauians to have our island’s moniker printed on threads in an entirely unpretentious, not-cheesy way. From either their Market St. shop or online, you can outfit the whole ‘ohana in clothes that look as good as they feel. But more than being the hippest of no ka oi clothiers, they embrace localism to the fullest and do tons of creative work in the community, especially with keiki. “It’s a movement,” they say. “It’s about growth and change. We believe that good ideas and good design have the power to inspire, to stimulate, to make good things happen.” A thing of beauty. 7 N. Market St., Wailuku, 891-8595, mauithing.com @anuheayagi

I started shopping at Mahina because I fell in love with their reusable shopping bags. I always felt a twinge of jealousy when I saw people carrying around the adorable totes and I finally had to check the place out myself. Let me say, as amazing as the bags are, they are the least impressive thing about Mahina. The clothes are chic, fashionable and totally adapted to island life. Even their accessories have a flamboyant vintage look, from psychedelic purses to rose rings to beaded bracelets. If you like your dresses colorful, light and airy, Mahina is where it’s at. (And those cool reusable bags? They’ll give you a discount if you bring them in.) 335 Keawe St. #208, Lahaina, 661-0383; 1913-B South Kihei Rd., Kihei, 879-3453, mahinamaui.com @angryshortgirl

BEST LASER HAIR REMOVAL Dr. Bennett’s Med Spa In our culture men don’t revere hairy women; in fact, women don’t revere hairy women. What does that mean? No matter how much of a pain in the butt (maybe literally) hair removal is, people will keep doing it. Fortunately, Dr. Bennett’s makes it easy and the results of their laser hair removal are long lasting. If it’s smooth skin you want, go see the Dr. 62 Baldwin Ave., Paia, 579-8979 @jenrusso

Runner-Up: Lei Spa, Lahaina

BEST PLACE TO GET WAXED Grace Beauty Day Spa When I’ve had a rough week, nothing calms me down more than having hot wax slathered on me, then having my body hair ripped out. Seriously though, the staff at Grace Beauty Day Spa is friendly and personable, and most importantly highly skilled and quick (vital in trickier waxing processes that include your girlie bits). Wax on, wax off. 62 B Baldwin Ave., Paia, 579-9779, gracebeautymaui.com @angryshortgirl

BEST HARDWARE STORE

BEST CONSIGNMENT STORE

Marmac Ace Hardware

The Rainbow Attic

A couple months ago, while attempting to fix the faucet on my bathtub, I misplaced a small but essential part. After a long and fruitless search, I visited the folks at Marmac Ace. They didn’t have the part. I went all over Central Maui looking for someplace that did, to no avail. And so I found myself back at Marmac. They still didn’t have the part, but they took time out to talk about other ways to get the job done. In the end, after probably a half-hour of patient discussion, I wound up buying a 50 cent piece of plastic that, if cut and “MacGyvered” properly, looked like it’d serve the purpose. Then, of course, I went home and found the missing part. What’s the moral of this rambling tale of botched home improvement? Only that Ace Marmac is the kind of hardware store where getting your money isn’t the primary objective, it’s offering you personal, knowledgeable service so that you’ll become a lifelong, loyal customer. I know I am. 334 Alamaha St., Kahului, 8773931 @jacobshafer

This is the way fashionistas recycle. Bedeck both body and hale with a unique stock of men’s and women’s clothing, accessories and household decor. Rainbow Attic’s selective compilation of our collective excess makes for a fine spectrum of secondhand pickins. Plus, there really is a pot of

gold at the end of this rainbow, when you consign your items for a 50/50 split and are paid when your items sell. If it’s a been awhile since you’ve treated yourself, just follow the... 1881 S. Kihei Rd. # B5, Kihei, 874-0884 @anuheayagi

EDIT PICK Best Place To Buy Girlie Gifts For the Product Junkie Lilikoi Beauty There are lots of occasions when you need the right gift, something that isn’t too personal but will definitely be appreciated. For girlie gifts, my go-to place is Lilikoi Beauty. You don’t need to know anyone’s size or style to get them a gift here. They have the most amazing candles, lots of body products from Ali’i Lavendar Farm and natural skin-care and beauty products. The service is great and the shop is on the North Shore, a perfect excuse to go boutique shopping in Paia. 18 Baldwin Ave., Paia, 579-6055 @jenrusso

Best Salon Plush Beauty Lounge When I was a little girl people used to cover me in cream and put a cherry on my head. It was tough growing up in the gateau. (Ba dum...cha!) Despite this, I grew from my experiences and became of pillar of society. Admittedly that pillar is a little dented and the mortar is a little crumbly, but it’s a pillar nonetheless.Even pillars sometimes want to feel like princesses and Plush Beauty Lounge is the place for that. If you’re looking to get yo’ hair did and makeup done with professionalism and high-quality products in a serene and low stress environment, check out Plush Beauty Lounge. Non-pillars also accepted. 845 Wainee St. #208, Lahaina, 667-5874 @angryshortgirl

Best Ukelele Shop Bounty Music It’s like an instrument orgy at Bounty Music spawned litters of little ‘ukuleles, hung in tidy rows from rafters and on walls. For four-stringers, its a sight to behold; and for staff, it’s their forte. Established in 1979, this shop has been a real musician’s friend and the ultimate local resource for all things uniquely ‘uke. They carry more makes and models than you ever knew existed, from prestigious local makers like Kanile’a, KoAloha and king of ‘ukes, Kamaka. BEST STAND-UP PADDLE BOARD SHOP Hawaiian Island Surf & Sport

BEST BOOKSTORE Borders Books & Music It used to be that people mourned the loss of small neighborhood bookstores at the hands of big chains like Borders. Now, all bookstores are in trouble, with online services and new technologies making buying and downloading books easier than ever. And yet some bookstores—big and small—survive, because they provide a service that a community wants. Clearly Borders—a perennial winner in this category—is one such store (or, more precisely, three stores). There’s just something about being able to run your hands over a book—taking in the subtle textures of its cover, the quality of its paper, the smell of its spine—that can’t be replicated. Meanwhile, Borders’ shelves are well-stocked with titles both new and old; I’ve frequently gone in to look for something specific and come out hours later having flipped through everything from children’s books to cook books to mystery novels, and possibly having purchased one of each. Whatever the next chapter may be for the book industry, for Maui, Borders is undeniably an important part of the story. 275 Kaahumanu Ave., Space 101, Kahului, 871-6112; 270 Dairy Rd., Suite 190, Kahului, 877-6160; 291 Piikea Ave., Kihei, 875-6607, borders.com @jacobshafer

Runner-Up: Barnes & Noble, Lahaina

Stand-up paddling (SUP, to you) has officially made the transition from fad to established sport; stand-up paddlers now outnumber surfers and kayakers at many spots. (Actually SUP traces its origins back to ancient Polynesia, so you could argue it was always more than a trend.) With that comes increased demand—not just for gear, but for advice and know-how. Hawaiian Island Surf & Sport has Maui’s burgeoning SUP community covered on both fronts, offering the latest brands and a friendly, experienced crew that doesn’t just sell this stuff but lives it, too. All in all, they’re just stand-up guys (sorry, couldn’t resist). 415 Dairy Rd., Kahului, 871-4981, hawaiianisland.com @jacobshafer

Runner-Up: Hi Tech Surf Sports, Kahului

BEST SCUBA / SNORKEL SHOP Boss Frog’s Dive & Surf Any place with the tag line “Frogs Just Have More Fun” earns automatic points with us. Add a cute cartoon frog chilling in a hammock and you’ve already won us over (yeah, we’re easy like that). But you didn’t vote Boss Frog’s the best place to get dive and snorkel gear because of a slogan and an anthropomorphic mascot; you chose them for their selection, convenient locations (on all four major islands if you’re on a mini-vacay) and vast knowledge of the best places to bob around and oogle fish. Nothing ruins a Scuba or snorkel trip faster than faulty equipment; go with the place with the established rep. And say hi to that cartoon frog for us. 150 Lahainaluna Rd., Lahaina, 661-3333; 2395 South Kihei Rd., Kihei, 875-4477, bossfrog.com @jacobshafer

Best Vortex of Nostalgia Daddy O’s Barber Shop, Kahului It’s a kane-only barbershop, whose checkerboard floor alone makes me want to exhaust a roll of duct tape to disguise the girls. Hello? Pistachio-colored porcelain barber’s chairs from 1924. A Seeburg Jukebox. A mounted buffalo’s head. Complimentary Coca-Cola. How can it get better than that? It does for the boys, with a “hot lather neck shave and shoulder massage” included with every cut, and option for an old-fashioned, hot towel straight-razor shave. Befitting of a place bedecked with pinups and rock ‘n roll paraphernalia, shop owners “love cars and car people,” and regularly play host to events for the whole ‘ohana. There, you’ll see such fuel-injected treats as the Delorean from Back to the Future, the General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard and Herbie...yes, the Love Bug himself. They had me at “pistachio.” 360 Papa Place, Kahului, 893-2322 @anuheayagi

Best Head Shop Hawaiian Holy Smokes For tobacco products only, of course (cough). It’s a no stems, no seediness sort of shop, where they aim for a vibe that’s “art gallery meets jewelry store,” with bright lights, clean lines and OCD-organized display cases, say managers Michael “Pittsburgh” Moody and Lynn Moody. Check out the 64-percolator water pipe, made for a mad scientist’s lair, or slides cut like oversized diamonds, or hookahs with futuristic freezable gel and floating fish that swim with every hit, or clever stash cans and other modes of masquerade, or... Kihei Recycling Center

Runner-Up: Aloha Recycling, Kahului

This may not be the sexiest category—ask someone what they want to do on a sunny Saturday and “go to the recycling center” probably won’t be their first choice—but it’s an important one. If you recycle (and shame on you if you don’t) having a reliable, convenient spot to drop off those cans and bottles is essential. Kihei Recycling meets both of those criteria and is also, as we noted last year when they won, well- kept up, meaning a minimum of flies, sticky

you somewhere while playing you music and blowing cool air on you?) So choosing a mechanic isn’t something that should be taken lightly. The buzz on Goldberg is that he’s one of those rock-solid neighborhood mechanics who gives every job—big or small—the care it deserves, and eschews the stereotype of the grease-covered con man by offering his customers fair estimates and reliable work. You may not have given birth to your car (ouch) but chances are it’s an important part of your family. Treat it accordingly. 253 Nehe Pl., Makawao, 572-5689 @jacobshafer

Best New Business Whole Foods Market Yes, they’re a Mainland chain. But, since opening in February to much hype, discussion and fanfare, Whole Foods has made admirable efforts to become a part of the community—most notably stocking their shelves with an array of Maui products, everything from Maui Cattle Company beef to locally grown fruits and veggies to (Best of Maui-winning) Maui Brew Co. beer. And everything is clearly labeled so you know how far your food traveled and who you’re supporting by buying it. Add a range of hard-to-find specialty products, an expansive salad and hot bar and a friendly, easer-to-help crew of “team member” and its easy to see why Mauians named Whole Foods the most popular new kid on the block. 70 Kaahumanu Ave., Kahului, 844-4444, wholefoodsmarket.com @jacobshafer

Best Adult Gift Shop Love Shack Maui Unlike many adult stores, the staff at The Love Shack is friendly, knowledgeable and provides shoppers with a sex-positive and welcoming atmosphere. Gone are the days when you had to wait until dark and wear your collar up high (unless you’re into that, in which case by all means). Not only can The Love Shack help enhance your experience, they can also educate you on safer sex practices while keeping everything fun and kinky. Maybe you’re not ready to take things out of the bedroom just yet? The Love Shack will bring the fun to you with a privately hosted party. BEST “GREEN” BUSINESS

BEST PET SUPPLY STORE

Rising Sun Solar

The Pet Shop

Vermont has maple syrup. Alaska has grizzly bears. Hawaii has the sun. We’re lucky in that sense, because while neither maple syrup nor grizzly bears can provide clean energy (that we know of) the sun certainly can. And, as oil gushed into the Gulf, the need for that clean energy became even more acute. Specializing in both residential and commercial PV installations, Rising Sun has gained an islandwide reputation for being on the cutting edge of this long-overdue trend (they’ve been in business since 1986, back when green was mostly just a color). We live in a place where solar literally makes sense for everyone, from both a practical and ecological standpoint. Here comes the sun, indeed. 810 Kokomo Rd., Suite 160, Haiku, 5798287, risingsunsolar.com @jacobshafer

Since we don’t have a zoo on Maui, my young daughter and I like to drop by The Pet Shop just to look at the animals. The birds, the fish, bunnies, puppies, kittens and reptiles are all fun in their own way. But when it’s time to take one home, choose responsibly. The most recent addition to our family? Six tetra fish that the helpful Pet Shop staff helped us choose; I’m happy to report they’re thriving. The fish section is really huge, and they have all the bells, whistles and accoutrements you’ll need. 70 E. Kaahumanu Ave., Kahului, 877-3040, petshopmaui.com @jenrusso

Tamara Catz Inc. Nothing makes me feel worse about my life as a single girl than writing about bridal shops. I might work, travel and play video games, but once my friends start talking about how excited they are to get married I feel like a failure. Especially when they take me shopping at Tamara Catz Inc, to look at the exquisite bridal collections, which are filled with long flowing skirts, Grecian influence, silk and chiffon. Even if you’re not getting married, Tamara Catz offers fashion straight out of a fairytale. The store is a girl’s dream come true. As long as that girl isn’t angry, single and jaded, of course. Oh well, the gays can’t get married, either. And hell, most of them are exponentially better looking and more talented than me. 83 Hana Hwy., Paia, 579-9184, tamaracatz.com @angryshortgirl

EDIT PICK Best Tattoo Parlor Paia Tattoo Parlor

Kama’aina Loan

Maui is filled with tattoo enthusiasts. As a result, tattoo shops are popping up everywhere, becoming more commonplace than Starbucks. While some shops may seem tantalizing at first, with their cheap prices and colorful flash art, remember if you don’t go for a quality artist in the first place, you’re only going to end up paying more to have the art covered up or removed. That said, the folks at Paia Tattoo Parlor are some of the more experienced artists on the island and specialize in traditional, Japanese, Polynesian, black and grey as well as photorealistic art. Not only that, but Paia Tattoo Parlor supports other local artists by hosting a revolving gallery of art installations. And remember, no matter where you go for your body modification needs: tip your artist! 120 Hana Hwy., Paia, 579-8515 @angryshortgirl

Best Place to Wish You Owned a Really Giant Farm

Westin Maui The Maui Humane Society, Puunene With mews and longing eyes, the animals at the Maui Humane Society will claw at your heart. Unless you’re walking out with a CertiďŹ ed Pre-Owned Cat or Dog (or rodent or fowl or whatever), you’re going to have your heart broken a little bit. The organization faces $160,000 in estimated budget cuts this year— tacked atop a $190,000 cut from last year—but remains dedicated to its mission statement, which “envisions a time when our community celebrates the human-animal bond and treats all fellow beings with care, compassion and respect.â€? Stave the ache by adopting an animal for yourself and/or donating to the Society, and squash the cycle by preaching the Bob Barker, spay-andneuter word. Mokulele Hwy. and Meha Meha Loop, Puunene, 8773680, mauihumane.org @anuheayagi

MauiTime readers voted and they love the Westin. With two gorgeous Kaanapali locations, The Westin Maui and the Westin Ka’anapali Ocean Resort Villas, there’s a lot to love. (Both offer kamaaina pricing.) The Westin Maui boasts a fantasy pool with slides and an area kids love, and they have parrots and amingos to further mesmerize the keiki. At the Westin Ka’anapali Resort Villas, rooms have condo-style amenities like kitchens and living rooms, great for family stays. The best amenity (for me anyway) is at Westin Maui, where your dog can accompany you. Now that’s accommodating. 2365 Ka’anapali Parkway, Lahaina, 667-2525; 6 Kai Ala Drive, Lahaina, 667-3200, westinmaui.com @jenrusso

year, Chef Jacques Pauvert was voted Best Chef for his mastery of menu fare as eclectic as the North Shore demographic. And of those Pa’ia peeps, it was a magnet for the hottest beach bodies and hippest hippies. It’s losses like these that remind us that no matter how good you are, the restaurant game is a tough biz. That said, I have a feeling this isn’t the last we’ll hear from the minds behind Jacuqes, though its previous incarnation will have to be resigned to our scrapbooks and fond recollections. BEST PRESCHOOL / DAYCARE Kamaaina Kids

Jacques

The importance of preschool has thankfully gained broad acceptance; it may not be legally mandated, but it gives kids the essential building blocks needed for success in kindergarten and beyond. On Maui, options run the gamut, from backyard day cares to big, accredited institutions (see the runner up). Kamaaina Kids falls somewhere in the middle—exible and affordable but also structured and staffed with trained, caring teachers who provide a safe, stimulating learning environment. Heck, I sent my son there are he’s the greatest, smartest, best kid in the history of the universe, so that should tell you something right there. 192 West Kamehameha Ave., Kahului, 871-8197; 553 Wainee St., Lahaina, 667-0422, kamaainakids.com @jacobshafer

POLITICS & ENVIRONMENT Best Gubernatorial Candidate Neil Abercrombie Former Congressman Abercrombie still faces a tough primary battle with Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann before he even gets to the general election, but if MauiTime readers had their way he’d win in a landslide. For a primer on Abercrombie’s positions and policies, see our June 3 Q&A with him; in short, he’s putting education at the forefront of his campaign, clearly in an effort to distinguish himself from the current (and soonto-be termed out) governor, whose own education record is spotty to say the least (see Best State Blunder). In the end, whether he wins or loses, Abercrombie is committed; he quit his Congressional post earlier this year to focus full time on his campaign, a decision for which he drew some heat. His defense: “I’m running for governor. You run for governor, you go all in.” @jacobshafer

Runner-Up

Mufi Hannemann

EDIT PICK BEST (NON) CANDIDATE WHO SHOULD BE ON THE COUNTY COUNCIL Lucienne De Naie We’ve blown this horn before, giving her multiple endorsements and even putting her on the cover, but Maui has repeatedly said “no.” It’s hard to figure out why. De Naie is a tireless advocate, especially for environmental issues, but more importantly she’s smart as a whip, sensitive but tough, passionate, full of integrity and knows her stuff inside and out. Other current councilmembers combine some of those qualities, but none have the full package. De Naie says she isn’t planning to run this year but may consider doing so at some point down the road. Hopefully by then voters will have finally realized she’s part of the solution. @jacobshafer

24 July 22, 2010

BEST MAYORAL CANDIDATE Mayor Charmaine Tavares Clearly, MauiTime readers have mixed feelings about Mayor Tavares. On the one hand, you voted her your favorite Mayoral candidate (in a squeaker over former Mayor Alan Ararkawa). But you also voted her runner up for Scariest Public Figure.

‘Guess it’s one of those love-hate things. We’ve made our feelings about the Mayor clear, but she is the incumbent and has already racked up a number of key endorsements, so it would certainly be unwise to discount her. On the other hand, the field of candidates vying to unseat her is large and diverse; whatever the outcome, this promises to be an interesting race. @jacobshafer

Runner Up: Alan Arakawa

BEST COUNTY OFFICIAL Gladys Baisa For years, this category has been the sole possession of Councilmember Jo Anne Johnson, who’s leaving the council because of term limits. Now, MauiTime readers have spoken, and Johnson’s heir apparent has emerged: Councilmember Gladys Baisa. Whether Baisa will have a run like Johnson’s (on the council or in BOM

voting) remains to be seen, but for now it’s clear her Pukalani-Kula-Ulapalakua constituents, and voters islandwide, have warmed to her generally friendly, amenable demeanor. Baisa’s known as a peacemaker, a role she gets to play frequently on a council with some big, competing personalities. Even a mini-scandal involving a tax exemption claim on a home outside her district wasn’t enough to shake readers’ belief that Gladys is one of the white hats in county government. @jacobshafer

Runner-Up: Jo Anne Johnson

POLITICAL ACTIVIST Lahaina Honolua Senior Citizens In 1970, according to the text of a 2005 resolution honoring the group’s 35th anniversary, the Lahaina Honolua Senior Citizens Club was formed with a roster of 53 members. Over the years they’ve been an active force in the community, testifying at meetings, contributing to boards and commissions and volunteering. Though most people pay lip-service to honoring the elderly, often they’re a forgotten group, pushed to the margins and ignored. Kudos to the Senior Citizens Club for making sure that doesn’t happen on Maui, and for proving once again that age truly is a state of mind. @jacobshafer

Runner-Up: Lance Holter

WORST COUNTY BLUNDER Merrill Lynch Investment I have to say, I’m proud of our readers for this one. This was an underreported story—though it got some good coverage in February from MauiTime contributor Doug Levin—about how the county and state were left holding the bag on some bad investments, made around the time the bottom started to fall out of the global economy. The county sued to reclaim its $32 million, but the bigger question was (and remains) whether state and local governments—and the rest of us for that matter—will be able to resist getting suckered into the next financial bubble. @jacobshafer

Runner Up: TVRs

WORST STATE BLUNDER Furlough Fridays

Worst Environmental Issue Water Maui’s breathtaking beauty and fragile ecological balance make for an array of pressing environmental issues—but they all come back to water. Do we have enough? Is it being properly allocated? Are we keeping it clean? From wastewater injection wells to stream flow restoration, taro farmers to golf courses and mega resorts, the water question is raised again and again in different contexts. It makes sense: our bodies, after all, are mostly made up of the stuff. We can’t live without it, and so it follows that we should protect and defend it with our lives. @jacobshafer

Runner-Up

Cane Burning

For the second straight year, this was a no-brainer. While 2009 brought the collapse of the Superferry, 2010 was all about Furlough Fridays. As the economy declined and cuts loomed, the teachers’ union ratified a contract that called for less instructional days. Not surprisingly, the public revolted, and it quickly became clear that the union and Gov. Lingle had to go back to the bargaining table to come up with a different solution. That’s when the dysfunction and mayhem really set in. Barbs were traded in the press, protests were staged and ultimately parents were arrested in the Governor’s office. It was a PR nightmare that brought shame and federal finger-wagging on Hawaii. But most of all it was a huge disservice to our keiki who were caught in the middle. A law passed this year frees up money to ensure no furloughs in the 2010-’11 school year. That’s a start, but the work of improving our state school system has just begun. @jacobshafer

Best Meter Maid Officer Keith Taguma OK, we admit it. We created this category especially for Taguma, and you readers obliged by overwhelmingly voting him in (see the runner up for evidence of just how big a landslide it was). If you don’t know Taguma you’ve never driven (or, more to the point, parked) in Wailuku. He’s the half-man, half-cyborg meter maid from hell, seemingly able to be in multiple places at once, constantly nailing people (including, it should be said, pretty much everyone in the MauiTime office) for safety stickers that expired yesterday or for staying 2 hours, 1 minute in a 2-hour space. Yes, technically he’s just doing his job. But he does it with such fervor and steely eyed glee it’s hard to feel anything other than contempt for the man. And we haven’t even mentioned the checkered past that led him to his current, unglamorous position (Google “State v. Estrada” if you’re curious). Now, if you’ll excuse us, we need to move our car. @jacobshafer

BEST COMMUNITY NON-PROFIT Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO) MEO’s mission statement—to provide “Basic tools for living, for earning, for self-reliance [and] for community involvement”—has always been important. But since the beginning of the financial crisis it’s become particularly prescient; now more than ever people need a lifeline, a support system, a hand up. And, of course, MEO can always use help, in the form of volunteers and donations. If you think they’re doing important work—and clearly you do based on this vote—pitch in. A rising tide, as they say, lifts all boats. 189 W. Kaahumanu Ave., Kahului, 877-7651, meoinc. charityfinders.org @jacobshafer

Runner Up: Maui Food Bank

BEST ENVIRONMENTAL NON-PROFIT Pacific Whale Foundation PWF deserves this win for all they do to raise awareness about humpbacks, including the important role they play in the ocean’s ecosystem and the global threats they face. But we love them because they get people—conscientiously and carefully, of course—up and close and personal with our majestic annual visitors, offering spectacular views of slapping fins and beaching backs. In all honesty, one of our biggest disappointments with this Best of Maui is that it didn’t come out during whale season so we could get an eye-popping 3D image of a blow hole in action. Ah well, there’s always next year. 300 Maalaea Rd., Suite 211 , Wailuku, 249-8811, pacificwhale.org @jacobshafer

WORST POLITICAL SCANDAL Sol Kaho’ohalahala Residency Challenge This issue actually popped up last year, when a group of Lanai residents came forward claiming Kaho’ohalahala lived in Lahaina rather than Lanai. Sol ultimately won the Lanai Council seat by a healthy margin, but the legal challenges haven’t let up, and as of this writing are still very much active. Kaho’ohalahala has decided to run for Mayor this year—a position where it doesn’t matter where you live as long as it’s in Maui County—and will almost

SCARIEST PUBLIC FIGURE TOWN TO VISIT

Gov. Linda Lingle What is there to say about Gov. Linda Lingle that hasn’t already been said (much of it in these pages)? From the Superferry boondoggle to the Furlough Friday dustup to her recent veto of civil union bill HB444, she has been consistently— and often woefully—out of tune with the best interests of Hawaii. The good news is her eight years are nearly up, and in November we’ll elect a new leader, hopefully one with the fortitude and foresight to guide the state forward rather than holding it back. @jacobshafer

Runner Up: Mayor Charmaine Tavares

TOWN TO LIVE

Paia

Lahaina Last year, Lahaina won best place to visit, so I guess what you guys are saying is that it’s just a great place. And we agree. Front Street and the Banyan Tree get all the attention—and deservedly so—but the West side also boasts a ton of cool hidden corners, populated by people with intense pride for their side of the island. The town’s historical signiďŹ cance, both pre- and post-contact is also not

Sure, there are more obvious choices, but we appreciate that our readers went the subtler route and chose this quiet, understated North Shore burgh, which offers a little bit of everything: smiling, spaced-out hippies, sunburned tourists, sand-covered surfer dudes, barefoot backpackers, laid back locals. And, oh yeah, an insane collection of really good restaurants that makes us wish we had four stomachs every time we head out there. Add some awesome nearby beaches, that cool graveyard that’s crumbling into the sea and the fact that this is the last, best stop on the road to Hana and we’re thinking Paia is a pretty awesome place for the people who live there, too. @jacobshafer

FOOD & DRINK Best Local Food Da Kitchen Ask my brother (and most men), and he’ll say this writeup needs only word: waitresses. True, Da Kitchen is staffed with bronzed Barbie dolls who are as much pleasant people as their countenance is cute. But there’s more to it than that. Their Kolaa Street location has bookended many a trip to the OGG, and their BYOB policy makes green bottle imbibing much easier than ordering. Hawaiian plate? Chicken katsu? Burger? Chinese chicken salad? Deep fried spam musubi? Dessert? Luckily, the choices are hard because everything is good. So no mattah what, your pick is a good one. Harder still is finishing your meal; portions are notoriously massive, and if you don’t share, you’re sure to have leftovers for lataz. 2439 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei, 875-7782; 425 Koloa St. #104, Kahului, 871-7782; Ste. 102, 658 Front St., Lahaina, 661-6761, da-kitchen.com @anuheayagi

BEST RESTAURANT Lahaina Grill Lahaina Grill takes your night out and elevates it to a dining experience. Their menu is a well-designed emporium of delicately crafted plates; everything is excellent. The service never fails to anticipate your next move. The lighting and ambiance are golden, backed by the good conversation of people enjoying themselves. Lahaina Grill celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and has dedicated the 20th day of each month to honor kama’aina. Yet another reason to honor them as the best in the business. 127 Lahainaluna Rd., Lahaina, 667-5117, lahainagrill.com @jenrusso

BEST DINING WITH A VIEW Merriman’s Kapalua The view from the outdoor deck at Merriman’s literally takes your breath away; dining with a view really doesn’t cover it. Kapalua is one of the truly special places on the Earth, blessed with excellent weather, amazing sunsets and tantalizing peeks at our neighbor islands. Makes you hungry, doesn’t it? Well, you’re in good hands; Chef Peter Merriman has been in Hawaii since the ‘80s and his knowledge of local ingredients elevates his dishes to the level of locavore art, rivaling even the surrounding beauty. 1 Bay Dr., Lahaina, 6696400, merrimanshawaii.com @jenrusso

Best New Restaurant Star Noodle From the moment its doors opened, Star Noodle opened up dining options on Maui. Their selection of dishes is as zen as their decor. Singapore noodles, garlic noodles, ramen, handmade bao, ssam of the day—the list goes on. The menu is Asian fusion at its finest, and reasonably priced to boot. They’ve recently launched a takeout program where you get a free reusable bag; the more you reuse it, the more discounts you get. Of course, the only thing better than taking out is dining in. 286 Kupuohi St., Lahaina, 667-5400 @jenrusso

Maui Tacos

Tiffany’s Bar & Grill

When you want a burrito, you think Maui Tacos. Is it the fact that they have just about every kind of filling you could want: shredded beef, grilled chicken, grilled steak, BBQ pork, grilled fish? Or is it the options: smothered in sauce and cheese, take it to go, chips on the side? Or it could be the names: the Lahaina, Hana, Hookipa, Napili. (My favorite is the Paia, a vegetarian delight to which I add their fantastic grilled chicken.) In the end, whatever the reason, one thing’s for sure: they always make it fresh, quick and ono at Maui Tacos. 2411 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei, 879-5005; other locations islandwide, mauitacos.com @jenrusso

The most common word I’ve heard to describe Tiffany’s is local. You only have to take one look at the 93-item menu to understand. There’s chow fun—that’s the fat noodle (if you’re new to noodles)—oxtail soup, Bi Bim Bap, mochiko chicken and, of course, Spam and egg sandwiches. And that’s just the tip of the pupu iceberg. Last time I was there three parties, including mine, ordered the sizzling steak bites. They turned out to be a carnivore’s dream, medium rare and tender. The entertainment, a big part of the package, includes multiple TVs broadcasting sports events like UH football, pool tables and karaoke after 9pm. 1424 Lower Main St., Wailuku, 249-0052 @nancykanyuk

BEST SEAFOOD Pacific’O Restaurant Pacific’O sits right on the beach at 505 Front Street; you can watch the boats come in to Lahaina Harbor from your table. This connection between the ocean and the restaurant is celebrated through their menu, infused with passion by Chef James McDonald. Using the freshest seafood from local sources has inspired Chef McDonald’s dishes, like coconut macadamia nut fish and crispy ahi, but in the end it’s your votes that helped Pacific’O float to the top. 505 Front St., Lahaina, 667-4341, pacificomaui.com @jenrusso

Runner-Up: Waterfront Restaurant, Wailuku

BEST STEAK Ruth’s Chris Steak House The cowboy ribeye is a juicy, marbled, delightful cut of USDA prime, but you can’t go wrong with any of the beef selections at Ruth’s Chris. They serve filet, New York, porterhouse and T-bone and bring out the flavor with perfect temperature treatment and a pat of butter melted over the meat. The steak is outstanding all by itself, but I have a feeling voters have also tried some of the sides and sauces that only add to the experience. 900 Front St., Lahaina, 661-8815; 3750 Wailea Alanui, Wailea, 874-8880, ruthschris.com @jenrusso

EDIT PICK BEST PLACE TO CHALLENGE THE CHEF Lulu’s Kihei If you think you have the cajones, head into Lulu’s Kihei and order the burger challenge. Its just you and 32 ounces of beef on a bun. You can even get fancy and order whatever you want on the burger. If you eat it up inside of 10 minutes, the meal is on the house and your picture goes on the wall. Sounds easy right? Best Mexican Food Amigo’s MauiTime readers know that bigger is not always better when it comes to their favorite eateries. Case in point: Amigo’s. While they have multiple locations, in Kahului, Kihei and Lahaina, the restaurants themselves are rather diminutive. Don’t be deceived, though. Their menus are anything but. They prepare their steak, shrimp, fish, chicken and pork in a dizzying array of choices. Not to be outdone, the bar menu offers somewhere around 15 different kinds of tequilas, beer—imported and domestic—and the traditional island drinks. So you can pair your chile verde with a Mexican beer, your shrimp taco (one of my favorites) with Patrone tequila or your enchilada al pastor with a mai tai. This is Mexican food at its most authentic and reasonably priced. 658 Front St. # 145A, Lahaina, 661-0210; 333 Dairy Rd. # 110B, Kahului, 872-9525; 658 Front St., Lahaina, 6610210 @nancykanyuk

Best Sushi Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar Once again, it’s Sansei by a landslide. Chef DK Kodama’s lively sushi bar and Hawaiian fusion menu have forever changed the game for sushi on Maui. Legendary nights have been spent eating half-price delights and watching friends sing karaoke while sucking down sake bombs, but it’s the lovely rolls that keep me coming back no matter what the hour. The exotics are good too: the Chicken Thai-Phoon features chicken breast, fresh herbs, sweet Thai chili sauce, peppers and onions; it’s a Bangkok pizza party in your mouth. Best BBQ Beach Bums Bar & Grill If you’re an aficionado of barbeque you’ll know that wet vs. dry—a kind of Coke vs. Pepsi thing—is the difference between slathered in sauce, an all-over-your-face experience, or dry, which gets its flavor from slow cooking or smoking. Beach Bums Bar and Grill at Maalaea Harbor aims to provide both. They cook their ribs, brisket, etc. for as long as 12 hours in a monster smoker. So if you want your meat to bask in its own smoky splendor, as I do, you have that option. But if you want to walk on the wet side you can still slop it up, slathering to your heart’s content with the housemade sauces available at your table. Either way, delicious. 300 Maalaea Rd. # 1M, Maalea, 243-2286 @nancykanyuk

BEST LUAU/DINNER SHOW Old Lahaina Luau The last time I patronized the Old Lahaina Luau, I was tagging along with the Travel Channel’s Taste of America crew. Off the record, they asked me how this show stacked up against the competition. I can’t remember exactly, but I made some cheesy comparison between the tallest tiki and most manini menehune. Meaning, this West side mainstay is far and away known as the biggest and best luau the island has to offer. From talent to eats and bottomless drinks, it’s a feast for the eyes and opu, exemplifying the merits of malo and the coconut bra. 1251 Front St., Lahaina, 667-1998, oldlahainaluau. com @anuheayagi

They have multiple locations islandwide, and the menu changes a little bit with each one, so no matter where you plan to meet you’ll likely have a Cafe O’Lei option. Their crab club is a wonderful sandwich of crab salad and bacon on foccacia, and their mahi is consistently great, served with rice and Caesar salad. I can’t come in without ordering the French onion soup, topped with puff pastry baked to order. Whatever you order, it’s a great way to seal the deal. 2439 S. If it stuck around long enough, it was likely my sole sustenance for days on end. Based on the votes, it would seem Jamba Juice has saved many MauiTime readers’ lives, too. Though it may not be the garden-fresh, roadside variety, there’s something to be said about Jamba’s consistency/cost/convenience. Best Health Food Store Mana Foods Every time I go into Mana Foods—celebrating 25 years serving Maui’s health food community—it’s a hub of activity. From their quaint light-green storefront, you enter into an emporium of organic, natural, gourmet and prepared foods. They also have vitamins, home and garden goods, books, body care and organic clothes. There’s a bakery and a hot food section that features vegan, vegetarian and lots of gluten free options. Their customer service is great, and they put a lot of thought into the providing the best products at the best prices. I love the produce section, where they feature a bounty of Maui grown veggies. Whether you’re shopping for groceries or just looking for a good-for-your-body snack, Mana Foods is the spot. 49 Baldwin Avenue, Paia, 579-8078, manafoodsmaui.com @jenrusso

Runner-Up: TIE: Hawaii Liquor Superstore, Kahului; Who Cut the Cheese?, Kihei

BEST CHEF Sheldon Simeon, Star Noodle

Runner-Up

Hawaiian Moons Natural Foods, Kihei

Chef Sheldon Simeon has a lot of undertstated elegance in his menu, but he’s dedicated to the ingredients and making them the real star of the show. I’ve seen him at work on the kim chee that’s made primarily to end up as a paste that graces the sizzling ribeye and the Brussels sprouts. It looks like a lot of trouble; it takes days to make this one ingredient that goes in the dish, but it pays off in flavor. That’s is the kind of attention to detail that makes Chef Sheldon the master, and Best of Maui’s Best Chef. 286 Kupuohi St., Lahaina, 667-5400 @jenrusso

Runner-Up: Bev Gannon, Gannon’s, Wailea

BEST LOCAL ICE CREAM Roselani Tropics Ice Cream Ben, Jerry, Haagen and Daz might be the big boys on the ice cream block but it’s the local girl, Roselani, that MauiTime readers really go for. Why? Maybe it’s because they use island ingredients: macadamia nuts, coffee, pineapple, mango, poha berry and a whole host of other flavors. Or maybe because it’s made right here on the island and has been since 1932 by three generations of the Nobriga family. Or maybe because, well, it’s awesome. My favorite, haupia—of coconut fame—is beyond creamy. Say what you like about market share. I’m voting for the hometown wahine. 918 Lower Main St., Wailuku, 244-7951, roselani.com @nancykanyuk

Runner-Up: Ono Gelato Company, Paia, Lahiana & Kihei

BEST PANCAKES Tasty Crust Restaurant If you eat something often enough you’ll discover the “secret” of its success, right? Not when it comes to Tasty Crust pancakes. I’ve never figured out what it is that makes them so…tasty. I’m not usually one for hot cakes, too heavy. But these are different—light, fluffy even. They sit, unadorned on your plate, no strawberries, no whipped cream. These cakes seem confident in their ability to wow you by their very simplicity. And they do. Order a short stack, two piece

or as part of a larger meal. 1770 Mill St., Wailuku, 2440845, tastycrust.com @nancykanyuk

Runner-Up: Gazebo Restaurant, Napili

BEST PLATE LUNCH Aloha Mixed Plate Aloha Mixed Plate celebrates the diversity of our ethnic backgrounds and brings local favorites to a gourmet

level thanks to Executive Chef Craig Masuda of Old Lahaina Luau. The dining room is casual and outdoor, but overlooking the ocean in Mala, a surprisingly beautiful spot to consume your plate lunch. The Hawaiian plate is epic; Chef Masuda oversees this preparation of pork, served here as kalua pig and cabbage, with lomi lomi salmon, poi, macaroni salad and haupia, and it’s under $10—unless you upsize it to Bamboocha and add a laulau. If you aren’t in the mood for Polynesian paralysis, try their shoyu chicken, which you can get in large or mini portion. 1285 Front St., Lahaina, 661-3322, alohamixedplate.com @jenrusso

Best Farmers Market ket Honokowai Farmers Market The view at this market has to be a factor in the voting. Directly across from the Honokowai Beach Park, it offers spectacular views of both Molokai and Lanai. They’re not the biggest market on the island. In fact they’re one of the smaller ones. But there seems to be a lot of market per square inch, packing in an abundance of local fruit, veggies and mouthwatering displays of sauces, dips, pestos, breads and other goodies. The staff is helpful, friendly and just this side of perky and available to assist you with your shopping needs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7am to 11am. 3636 Lower Honoapiilani Rd., Lahaina, 669-7004 @nancykanyuk

Runner-Up

Maui Swap Meet, Kahului

Best Breakfast Kihei Caffe People-watching on South Kihei Road is awesome; the parade of pink-skinned tourists, scantilyclad beachgoers and colorful local characters provides an endless source of amusement. And the outdoor, sidewalk-hugging seating at Kihei Caffe offers the perfect vantage point. But I digress. The category isn’t Best Place to Oogle Strangers, it’s Best Breakfast, and on that count the Caffe delivers (maybe it’s the extra “f”?). Whether you’re hankerin’ for a fluffy stack of banana mac nut flapjacks or a worchestershire-slathered Benedict, they’ve got it, served with aloha (and, if you want, a side of bacon). Space can sometimes be tight during the morning rush, but if you have to wait a few minutes for a table, there’s that people-watching to keep you occupied. 1945 S. Casanova Italian Restaurant and Deli

BEST FINE DINING

the moment you arrive you feel like royalty; once you’ve been seated and taken in the unique, intricate decor, you know you’re in for the meal of a lifetime. From the sweet, ripe papayas swelling with grilled beef to the coconuts teeming with raw fish to the mahi mahi stuffed with crab and lobster to the black pearl dessert course, you’ll be dreaming of coming back before it’s even over. 799 Poho Pl., Paia, 579-8488, mamasfishhouse.com @jenrusso

Mama’s Fish House

Runner-Up: Spago, Wailea

Runner-Up: Da Kitchen, Kihei, Kahului & Lahaina

For more than two decades, Casanova has offered the whole package: fresh ingredients, authentic recipes and amazing entertainment. In Italy, pasta is eaten primi piatti, as the first course before your main dish and that option’s available here, including their

homemade linguine, available at lunch and dinner. Their pizza is made in a wood-burning oven, their mozzarella is made in-house. Quite simply, you can’t get any closer to Italy on Maui. 1188 Makawao Ave., Makawao, 572-0220, casanovamaui.com @jenrusso

Mama (that would be Doris Christenson) knows best, and has been fine-tuning Maui’s Best Fine Dining establishment for the past 27 years. From

BEST LOCAL CHEAP EATS Sam Sato’s It’s the insiders’ go-to for getting your grind on. “I know people who get off the plane from wherever, and that’s their first stop. Before seeing Grandma. Before getting settled. Before freshening up. Everything is better after a bowl of their dry mein,” says regular Traci McDonald. From saimin that will satiate even an addict’s fix to manju worth handcarrying to loved-ones across oceans, they serve up something for everyone—but cater to born-andraised palates—at bargain prices. They’ve been doing it for almost 80 years—the first store opened in 1933—and we hope they do it for 80 more. 1750 Wili Pa Loop, Wailuku, 244-7124 @anuheayagi

Runner-Up: 808 Deli, Kihei

BEST FISH AND CHIPS Alexander’s Fish & Chips The fish and chips competition on Maui is stiff, and once again Alexander’s has come out on top. Their crinkle-cut fries are my favorite style, and the fish portions are ample and delicious. Choose from three options—ahi, ono or mahi—and pair with ample sauces and sides. 1913 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei, 874-0788 @jenrusso

Best Local Coffee House Maui Coffee Roasters Maui Coffee Roasters is the favorite coffee house of Maui, serving premium pulled espresso shots and amazing pastries in a classic cafe environment. Located at the crossroads of Kahului, Dairy Road and Hana Highway, the shop is a hub of caffeine-fueled activity. Their breakfast sandwiches are the bomb, but the menu morphs just as easily into lunch with wraps, salads and bagels. And their “happy-cappy” hour keeps you perked up with $1 cappucinos from 2pm to 6pm. Plus, if you need gourmet beans this is the place to buy them; they have an international selection and everything you need to brew a great cup at home. 444 Hana Hwy., Kahului, 877-2877 @jenrusso

BEST NOODLE SHOP WokStar International Noodle Cafe Its easy to see why MauiTime readers love Wokstar; it’s got a great, convenient location on South Kihei Road and their Asian-fusion dishes are fresh and fast. Best Local Booze/Beer/Wine Maui Brewing Co., Beer My only beef with Maui Brew Co. is that they don’t sell more of their awesome concoctions (the ones you can sample from the tap at the Kahana restaurant/pub) at gas stations and grocery stores for convenient pau hana pickup. Admittedly it’s a minor quibble, especially since the three types that are available in eco-friendly six-packs islandwide (Big Swell IPA, Bikini Blonde lager and Coconut Porter) represent the quality and craftsmanship that go into MBC’s ales. Crack one open, pour it in a glass (if that’s your thing) and savor it: a truly local product from a fine company and, most importantly, a damn good beer. 4405 Honoapiilani Hwy. #217, Lahaina, 669-3474, mauibrewingco.com @jacobshafer

BEST PLACE TO GET PERFECT HEAD EVERY TIME

Runner-Up: Ramen Ya, Kahului

Dog & Duck

Nagasako’s is a neat little nook that epitomizes the mom and pop M.O. Nostalgic, cluttered and (on the deli side) a little cramped, it’s one of the last holdouts for that old Lahaina town feel. The grinds are mean, though there are few places to sit. But who’d want to with all the West side adventures that await? The beauty of the plate lunch is its portability, after all. Appropriately too, they’ve snagged the award for Best Spam Musubi—the ultimate local-style meal-on-the-go. Why? They keep it simple. Just one kind on the menu. With energies focused, and Spam sauteed in special sauce, it’s no wonder it’s a winner. 845 Wainee St., Lahaina, 661-0985 @anuheayagi

Calm down, I’m talking about beer head—as in, the tiny bubbles of carbon dioxide at the top of your draught. Too much ruins the glass, not enough and you feel shorted. At Dog & Duck your head is just right, aesthetically pleasing, releasing the aromas of the quality draught beers they offer. But don’t stop with just the head; the food is awesome too. Chef Simon Jones hits it outta the park with whatever he’s working: grilled salmon, peas, potatoes, corned beef, fish and chips. Their late night pupus are the perfect head pairing, and with their happy hour specials you can buy two appetizers and get one free. Beers on tap include Stella, Guinness, Harp, Bud, Bud Light and more. 1913 South Kihei Rd., Kihei, 875-9669 @jenrusso

BEST CHINESE Dragon Dragon Chinese Restaurant No mean feat, topping a Best of Maui category

three years in a row. But that’s exactly what Dragon Dragon has done. How do they do it? Friends of mine swear by it for large family gatherings, birthday celebrations, etc. They also offer dinner packages for two, four or six. And their regular menu is a tome, featuring a whopping 116 items! Oh, and did I mention they serve dim sum (my personal favorite)? These wonderful little bamboo baskets full of buns, dumplings, etc. are available at lunch. Hmm, given that they’re a three-time winner, maybe they should be called Dragon Dragon Dragon. 70 E. Runner-Up: Fu Lin Chinese Restaurant, Lahaina

BEST JAPANESE Kobe Japanese Steak House My friends travel thousands of miles to come to Maui and eat at the Kobe Japanese Steak House. We go every year to experience the teppanyaki chef’s wizardry with fire and knives. Japanese teppanyaki-style dining is all about socializing and good food, and Kobe delivers both. After you’re seated, the chefs really put on a show, and add their own touch of comedy, too. The steaks and other proteins are traditionally served in sliced or bite-size portions that are grilled in front of you, served with fresh grilled veggies like mushroom and cabbage and a variety of dipping sauces. BEST SHAVE ICE Local Boy’s Shave Ice One word: mochi. Two words: azuki beans. In both these things, I find eternal happiness. The fact that they’re free add-ons to Local Boy’s shave ice is a supernova blow to my munchie mind. Also free are extras like ice cream, gummy bears and li hing mui powder. But it’s the Kauai Cream that they’re famous for. It’s more than mere condensed milk poured on top, but the recipe is secret. Sized “Big Baby,” “Pretty Mama” and “Papa Nui,” they’re more than enough to share (but you won’t want to). As for me, I go for broke with lychee and lilikoi syrups, doused over snow with just-right generousness. 624 Front St., Lahaina, 344-9779; 1941 S Kihei Rd., Kihei, 875-6731 @anuheayagi

Runner-Up: Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice, Lahaina

BEST VIETNAMESE A Saigon Cafe Word of mouth counts for a lot in the Maui restaurant community. Just ask regular customers of A Saigon Café. Located in sleepy Wailuku—under a bridge—it has still managed to be on the Best of Maui list multiple times. It probably has a lot to do with dishes like their ever-popular burritos. No beans or cheese here—these are Vietnamese-style, rice papers wrapped around sprouts, mint, basil, veggies and tofu, beef or chicken. There’s pho, the Vietnamese version of beef noodle soup and clay pots with either chicken or shrimp and so much more. One of my personal favorites? Sweet Thai iced tea, heavy on the sweetened condensed milk. Great with anything you order. Don’t let their out-the-way location fool you. This place is worth finding. 1792 Main St., Wailuku, 243-9560 @nancykanyuk

Runner-Up: Bale, Kahului

BEST FOOD BOOTH AT THE FAIR Chow Fun, Maui County Fair I know chow fun is not considered a gourmet dish; in fact it may even be regarded as simple. But, at the risk of hyperbole, I would argue that the chow fun created by the Wailuku Hongwanji and brought to the Maui County Fair each year is one of the best foods in the universe. It’s perfectly balanced, from starchy, flat white noodle to green onion to limp but not stringy bean sprout to ground beef. But you don’t have to take my word for it—just take one look at the line that lasts all night. @jenrusso

Runner-Up: Flying Saucer

BEST HOSTESS BAR

BEST PAU HANA Milagros Food Co. MauiTime readers know a great pau hana spot when they see one. Their famous $3 Sauza margaritas and $3 Kona brew happy hour starts at 11am and takes the edge off the day straight through ‘til 6pm. Add a platter of nachos or a quesadilla on their Paia peoplewatching lanai and you’re really cooling your heels. If the day’s stresses don’t melt away, try one of their fine sipping tequilas—it never fails! 3 Baldwin Avenue, Paia, 579-8755 @jenrusso

Runner-Up: Lahaina Coolers Restaurant, Lahaina

BEST MAI TAI

Saigon Palace “Can I buy you a drink?” is always a welcome phrase when you’re surrounded by pretty girls, lavishing you with attention, even when you’re telling them the same tired jokes they’ve already heard a million times. And if getting fawned over by cute girls is your thing (and not having them run screaming, attempting to claw out their eyes in disgust), Saigon Palace is the place to be. Looking to get your groove or game on? Saigon Palace also boasts a dance floor and pool tables, where you can flirt with all the pretty ladies. According to its Myspace page, Saigon Palace is a Leo, but with a fun atmosphere, generous drinks, good food and

Lahaina Mai Tai Lounge Ah, the mai tai—an integral part of the island experience. There’s hula, beautiful beaches and that lovely concoction of light and dark rum and pineapple juice. Right? Not so fast says managing partner Michel Roy and bartender Pepe Nuno of Mai Tai Lounge in Lahaina. A true mai tai has a number of ingredients—light rum, dark rum, orange curacao liquor (made on Oahu by the Portugese, btw) and orgeat syrup but no pineapple juice. It’s this attention to detail and discerning MauiTime readers that have placed them at the top

Best Server Amy Adams, Cafe Des Amis Cafe Des Amis personifies casual. And at casual restaurants, sometimes the tendency is for the service to get casual too. Not so in this case. Amy, like her cohorts, is professional, friendly and efficient, effortlessly tending to your needs as you enjoy the delicious crepes and wraps that have made this joint a North Shore mainstay. We’re not saying that winning Best of honors should automatically earn Amy higher tips, but we’re not not saying it either. @jenrusso

BEST FEMALE BARTENDER Sarah Stern, South Shore Tiki Lounge Is it her curls, curves and smile or her quick, professional service? Which is more intoxicating? Either way, Sarah puts a smile in her service and can fix you a drink when one is needed. It helps that she’s stationed at one of the hippest, most popular drinking holes on the South side, where the food and cheer are as good as the peeps behind the bar. 1913 S. Best Public Pool Kihei Aquatic Center The budget crunch has led to reduced hours at all County pools, including Kihei Aquatic (now closed Wednesdays). But at least it’s still open—providing a very alluring, very free option for those days when surf and sand just feel a tad too daunting. There are ample lanes for lap swimmers, a nice keiki area with a wading pool and big, splashy fountain and clean, easily accessible changing facilities. In short, all the stuff you want in a pool. Plus, in the sweltering heat of a Kihei summer, you can never have too many options to dip in and cool off. 303 E. Lipoa St., Kihei, 874-8137 @jacobshafer

Samurai swordsmanship is not for those who tend toward fleeting fancy. Beyond simply weapons handling and tactic, it is the complete study of the samurai Way. To the lifelong commitment of this Way, senseis Bob Montgomery and Guy Junker have devoted themselves; and in so practicing, impart their knowledge upon a core group of dedicated pupils. Housed thanks to the Okinawan Kenjin Kai, perched near the stream’s mouth in Waiehu, classes are held every Tuesday and Friday from 6-9pm. Under a steep, beamed pitch and between lit glass museum walls, practitioners studying Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaitu (a style from the end of the Edo period), wear wide, pleated hakama pants, cinched with obi belts over dogi tops, and follow formalities as prescribed by the school and under Tokyo-based Grand Master Sekiguchi Sensei. An ‘ohana like no other, the camaraderie of the group is without compare. They’ve been so kind as to welcome me, too; and with unconditional support, have steeled me through battling cancer and every other of life’s turns. Though the Way remains, for me, yet to be mastered, I know it can be found at this school—with teachers, brethren and friends. 573-1965, info@ komeijuku.com @anuheayagi

BEST ACTIVITY COMPANY BEST BARBECUING BEACH Kamaole III Nothing says summer quite like a BBQ at the beach and a few sacrificial watermelons. Luckily, Kam III already has the picnic tables and BBQ pits built in, so all you have to do is bring the food, family, fun and fire up the coals, then enjoy the fresh air, beach and all the joys of island living. Even if you’re not the best outdoor chef, one of the best things about Kam III is that it’s near all those great restaurants in Kihei (some which made it into BOM), for when you’re tired of eating burnt BBQ and dealing with your brooding pre-teens complaining how all this sunshine is bad for their Twilight tans. @angryshortgirl

Runner-Up: Launiopoko

Trilogy Excursions Trilogy Excursions takes one of the most striking features of living on an island (that is, being surrounded by water), and turns it into a wonderland of adventure. Whether it’s sailing, snorkeling or Scuba diving, Trilogy has got you covered. Wanna see some water-dwelling mammals? Trilogy offers dolphin and whale watching cruises. If you want see the denizens of the deep up close and personal, they can take you on either a snorkel tour of some of the best spots on Maui, or on a Scuba dive. Or maybe you’re tired of hustle and bustle and want to take it easy? Relax on one of their sunset cruises, take in the splendor and snack on ono appetizers. Whatever your mood, Trilogy has an adventure for you. 180 Lahainaluna Rd., Lahaina, sailtrilogy.com @angryshortgirl

BEST SNORKELING SPOT

BEST HIKE

Black Rock

Bamboo Forest

When I was in high school, jumping off Black Rock was the thing to do. Of course, this entailed sprinting through a gated community, running from groundskeepers and scrambling over tourists. Now that I’m older and wiser (not to mention slower), I’ve come to realize the beauty in taking things easy, and just enjoying the wonderment of nature. And again, Black Rock comes to my rescue. Readers, you have chosen Black Rock as the premier spot for snorkeling, and with its picturesque underwater views, it’s no wonder. And for those rare times I’m feeling young and violent, elbowing my way through throngs of tourists trying to snatch pictures of turtles and fish does the trick. @angryshortgirl

This is arguably the quintessential Hana hike, the one every visitor should do and every kama’aina should do again. It’s got all the essential elements—mud, bridges, waterfalls— and, of course, the bamboo: towering, majestic, creaking, closing in around you almost to the point of claustrophobia. East Maui offers so many treasures it’s hard to say one stands head-and-shoulders above the rest—it really depends on what you’re looking for—but this trek is indisputably a shining jewel

Runner-Up: Honolua Bay

EDIT PICK

Best Place to Start Family Traditions Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area Halfway there, the pave gives out and it’s 4WD-only territory. Ten acres nestled in the fog belt of the Kula Forest Reserve, it’s the borderland between Fern Gully and Narnia, from some sad Hawaiian dreamscape. Until recently, the trick to reserving the single cabin was to call the DLNR Division of State Parks a year in advance, but now reservations can more conveniently be made (for any state park) online at hawaiistateparks.org/camping ($60 per-night, residents / $90 non-resident). For as long as I can remember, my ‘ohana has annually mastered this staycation in the clouds; and over the years, Polipoli has championed a few other “bests,” too. Best Wild Plums on Trail; Best Place to Chop Firewood; Best Place to Eat Dad’s Famous Beef Stew; Best Redwoods; Best Wild Roses; Best Place to Crochet with Mom; Best Bed of Moss; Best Place to Watch Honeycreepers; Best Place to Get More Reading Done Than You Ever Thought Possible; Best Place to Shoot BB Guns with Your Brother; Best Place to Play Lord of the Rings; Best Shelter Cave, etc. @anuheayagi

BEST LOCALS’ BEACH Baby Beach Spreckelsville/Paia Baby Beach in Paia offers a twofold service as the Best Locals’ Beach. First, its natural lagoon provides a safe environment for the whole family, be it the little one’s first swimming lesson or just marveling at the wonders hidden in the tide pools. For the older kids, it’s walking distance to Baldwin Beach and Paia Bay, which are great for swimming or bodyboarding. However, Baby Beach’s true potential is revealed on windy days, where it acts as a natural exfoliation spa. It’s true, after being sandblasted by the beach on a windy day, your skin will be soft as a baby’s! True origin of the nickname? You decide. @angryshortgirl

EDIT PICK Best Place to See Dragonballz Sun Yat Sen Park, Keokea Sadly, this Edit Pick is in memoriam. Dragon junk can still be seen in Iao Valley, but its Keokea counterpart has been castrated. This Upcountry park is home to a standing statue of its namesake—Chinese revolutionary Sun Yat-Sen—but is hallmarked by two large, faux stone lions (and two little ones flanking the park’s entrance, too). Rather promiscuously poised over a large sphere, the mauka-most lion inspired a little Project Mayhem in some anonymous sculptor, and the statue longboasted a cleverly crafted pair of clay “fruits” of the loom. Conspicuous yet camouflaged, it required close inspection to see that these family jewels (and then some) were a pottery prankster’s addition. But when last I traversed to Sun Yat-Sen Park, I was dismayed to find these dragonballz had been scraped clean off. Neutered, the poor fellow looks nearly as desiccated as the droughtchoked park, where the fig tree has no fruit and where should be peaches are but pits. @anuheayagi

BEST LOCAL AMATEUR SURFER Albee Layer In 2005 and 2006, Haiku’s Albee Layer—or Alfred L. Layer IV if you want to get technical—was featured in the surf flicks Kids Who Rip and Kids Who Rip, Volume 3. He’s not a kid anymore (he turned 18 last June) but he still rips. In fact, he just keeps ripping harder, riding his way to the front of a crowded field of Maui up-andcomers. To quote surferhot100.com, which keeps tabs

on the world’s best young surfers: “In this day and age, where you have to be rounded to be successful, Albee’s mix of futuristic grabs and airs coupled with his ability to drop into anything will keep his name relevant years to come.” @jacobshafer

BEST LOCAL GROM

piling up awards and accolades. The son of Kazuma Surfboards owner and surfing coach Matt Kinoshita, Chaz has blossomed under his father’s tutelage. In May, he won the Boy’s Open division of the Neil Pride HASA competition at Hookipa and, per Punker Pat’s Surf Blog over at rvca.com, got “his feet wet” at Jaws this winter. The only thing bigger than those waves may be what’s in store for this preternaturally gifted grom. @jacobshafer

Runner-Up: Justice Patao

Chaz Kinoshita This is the second straight year Chaz has won this category, and while he won’t stay young enough to qualify for much longer, it’s safe to assume he’ll keep

Best Playground Giggle Hill An adult critiquing a playground is kind of like a cat delivering the surf report. It simply wasn’t made for us. So I’ll turn to my three-year-old son, who, when asked what playground he wants to visit, invariably chooses “the wooden one.” What he means—and what he’d say if he were a stiff-kneed grownup incapable of enjoying the pleasures of a twisty slide— is the 4th Marine Division Memorial Playground at Giggle Hill. (Really, “the wooden playground” is much less cumbersome, and more descriptive.) By any name, it’s a great spot, cooled by Haiku breezes, surrounded by open green fields and covered picnic tables ideal for birthdays and other kiddie occasions, and, most essentially, boasting a ton of quality play equipment, tailored for everyone from timid toddlers to rambunctious elementary schoolers. Adults are the ones who voted this the winner, but it’s the kids who’ve truly spoken. @jacobshafer

EDIT PICKS Best Place to See Chickens at the Beach Honolua Bay How charming you find Maui’s feral chickens (and roosters) depends entirely on where you encounter them. Crossing the road? Charming. Clucking (and crowing) outside your window at 4am? Less charming. Maybe the funniest (and thus among the more charming) places to encounter them is at the beach, and, for whatever reason, they’re usually out in force at Honolua Bay. It’s nice; when you’re not bobbing in the water marveling at the colorful sea life, you can laugh as a hen picks her way between the rocks to peck at some tourist family’s picnic. The very definition of a “what the cluck?” moment. @jacobshafer

Best Local Sports Swag Foam shaka finger, Na Koa Ikaika Maui games I was already basically sold on Maui’s new pro baseball team before I walked through the gate of Maehara Stadium for my first game; I’m a big baseball fan, so I’m an easy mark. But the deal was officially sealed when I made my way over to the merchandise booth and saw it: a big, yellow foam finger bearing the team’s logo. But instead of the usual, cliched (and often wrong) “We’re Number One,” this one featured the thumb-and-pinkie-out gesture that defines Hawaii. Good marketing move on their part, good purchase on my part. Go Na Koa! Nakoaikaikamaui.com @jacobshafer

BEST YOGA TEACHER Mary Grace, Maui Yoga and Kickboxing Though its aims are tranquility, flexibility and inner calm, yoga is deceptively complex. Because of this, it’s important to have a good teacher, one who can help you get you into—and out of—those pretzelesque poses with, if not effortless grace, at least no injuries or embarrassment. Mary Grace has been practicing yoga since childhood and has studied and taught the ancient art all over the world. Now, along with co-owner/teacher James Onnikian, she operates Maui Yoga and Kickboxing in Kihei, which specializes in Bikram, or hot yoga, giving you a little sweat with your namaste. 115 E. Division I Coach of the Year, as chosen by his peers, and brought home to the Valley Isle the MIL’s first-ever DI Girls Basketball State Championship this February. @anuheayagi

BEST COUNTY PARK Keopuolani Park I have had some pretty good memories at Keopuolani Park, from a night-time picnic on one of the fields to listening to someone practice the bagpipes after work to just hanging upside down on the jungle gym with friends. (I’m talking recently; you’re never too old to hang upside down on a jungle gym.) I’m glad the rest of Maui has also made some good memories there. Yeah, memories! And yeah, Keopuolani Park! @angryshortgirl

Runner-Up: Launiupoko Beach Park

BEST SCHOLASTIC ATHLETE

BEST YOGA STUDIO

Maiki Viela, Lahainaluna

Paia Yoga

Named the Maui Interscholastic League’s 2010 Division I Player of the Year, 5’4” point guard Maiki Viela— known for her “dime-dropping exploits,” according to ESPN Insider—helped lead Lahainaluna to the MIL’s first-ever Hawaiian Airlines Division I Girls Basketball State Championship this February. Opposite defending champs, Konawaena High of Hawaii Island, the Lady Lunas were down 11 points in the fourth quarter when a floater from Viela ignited a harried, championshipwinning run for the second-seeded team. After the win, coach Todd Rickard told The Maui News Viela is “a true point guard who can get through traps and relentless pressure.” She was picked for the 2009 Team Aloha Girls Basketball Team, but opted to join “Team Taurasi”— affiliated with two-time U.S. Olympian and WNBA All-Star, Diana Taurasi—the most elite travel team of the California Storm Basketball Club. In March, she was named 2009-’10 Gatorade Hawaii Girls Basketball Player of the Year, which awards “not only outstanding excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character.” @anuheayagi

Runner-Up: BJ Vega, Maui High

BEST LOCAL COACH Todd Rickard, Lahainaluna Alumnus and site supervisor of Lahainaluna, Todd Rickard has been the head coach of the school’s girls’ varsity basketball team for the last seven years. In that time, he’s coached six straight Maui Interscholastic League Players of the Year—including 2010 honoree (and Best Scholastic Athlete) Maiki Viela—plus three others under his tutelage in yeas prior. Rickard is the 2010 MIL

I’m probably not the best person to judge the merits of yoga; my familiarity begins and ends with sun salutations. Thankfully, lots of MauiTime readers, and especially a sizable segment of the population in Paia, know that and a lot more. So it’s not surprising that Paia Yoga tops this category. Located on Hana Highway, smack dab in the middle of town, they have teachers schooled in Iyengar, Ashtanga, Flow and Yang/ Kundalini, offer classes for moms, kids and even teach something called ecstatic dance. If you’re interested, head to Paia and look for the mailbox with the OM. 161 Hana Hwy., Paia, paiayoga.com @nancykanyuk

Runner-Up: Maui Yoga & Kickboxing, Kihei

BEST HIGH SCHOOL SPIRIT Lahainaluna High School I didn’t graduate from Lahainaluna High School, and I’ve got to admit that I feel like a traitor praising their high school spirit. But it’s hard to deny that their fanatic alumni, well-coordinated band, dedicated student-athletes and intellectual academics take pride in their alma mater. It’s the oldest postsecondary school west of the Rockies, as they like to trumpet, as well as the first school founded in Hawaii. And really, that’s something to be proud of. If that’s not enough, Lahainaluna also boasts of some famous graduates like David Malo, Samuel Kamakau, Keali’i Reichel and MauiTime’s own, Jen (Spector) Russo. Go Lunas! 980 Lahainaluna Rd., Lahaina, 662-4000, lahainalunahs.org @angryshortgirl

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Best Band The Throwdowns They’re the sizzle of Pop Rocks poured over sherbet, sweet and sour firecrackers on a musical mission for world domination. With songs like “Kihei Town” and “Stolen Car,” they’ve saturated the airwaves from here to Honolulu (and beyond), lighting up DJs’ phone lines with request after request. In just one year’s time, they’ve conquered the Battle of the Bands, opened for The Fray, Matisyahu, Bad Brains, Panic at the Disco, 311, NOFX, the English Beat (and loads of others), selfreleased a CD—produced and mastered by guitarist Ola Shaw, for his We Are More Productions—and then re-released it nationally with ADA/Warner Music Group. A Na Hoku Hanohano nomination for “Rock Album of the Year” (shockingly stiffed for the win, though the nod is sure to be the first of many), gigged across oceans and icebergs and, in the summer subsequent to their last CD release, are recording yet another one (full-length... stay tuned). Talent aside, the best thing about Erin Smith, Ian Hollingsworth, Kimo Clark and Shaw is their cheery candor. Iao Theater, Wailuku

Catch yourself singing “Kachi Kachi Music Makawao” as you head up Haleakala Highway? Or “You Ku’uipo” when possessed by the trilling thrills of love? Thank Willie Kahaiali’i. Oh wait, you have, by again voting him best of the kane crooners. He’s the only Maui boy I know who can waltz up to a karaoke mic and take over the night with his own tunes (as I’ve luckily borne witness). Not that he needs to. Gigging regularly from Mulligan’s to the MACC, his altruistic side also places him at oodles of charity events, including his own Willie K. Celebrity Golf Tournament, a benefit for the Maui Memorial Medical Center’s Oncology Department. He’s worked with such notables as B.B. King, Santana, Willie Nelson, Prince, and Crosby, Stills & Nash, and can also boast a stack of Na Hoku Hanohano awards and Grammy nominations. Too, how many Christmas albums are worth caring about? It’s a short list, but Willie’s on it. williek.com @anuheayagi

Guitar wielding and high-heeling, Smith is a top-shelf concoction whose recipe for success includes equal parts chops and go-getter guts. As the femme fatal front-woman of The Throwdowns, she’s charted (and started) her ascent to stardom, alongside “the boys,” Kimo Clark (bass), Ian Hollingsworth (drums) and Ola Shaw (guitar). With their debut Don’t Slow Down, the T’downs have fast become darlings of the radio request line and earned national distribution with ADA/Warner Music Group. But lucky (if) you live Maui, because this cherub-faced Canadian with a HI-style soul is still pro at rocking it solo, and “pays the bills” by belting it out at the best bars on the Valley Isle. myspace.com/erinsmithmusic @anuheayagi

Like withered, crimson chrysanthemums, the coffers at the Iao Theater speak to the cachet of this historic venue. It’s tear-worthy to think these blooming architectural adornments were nearly lost to time, as the crumbling former vaudeville house fell into disrepair. Thanks to the community’s action in the ‘80s, by Maui Community Theater, now Maui OnStage, the revitalization of Iao (built in 1928) has today reached new heights. Of any entertainment house on Maui, it is the one with the most character and has harbored the most characters within it. 68 N. Market St., Wailuku, 244-8680 @anuheayagi

EDIT PICK Best Place To Laugh Your Ass Off Tin Can Comedy at Mulligan’s on the Blue If you haven’t been to a night of Tin Can Comedy, go. If you haven, go back. Nothing like it on Maui; it’s amateur, it’s raw and you never know what is going to happen next. Shaggy Jenkins emcees every this every-Tuesday-at-9pm event, and there’s a winner picked each night. Hats off to Mike O’Dwyer and Mulligan’s on the Blue for supporting the local, burgeoning comedy scene. LOCAL RADIO STATION Native 92.5

PLACE TO DANCE South Shore Tiki Lounge How do they get your “body movin’”? Well, Best Club DJ, DJ Blast, and Best Female Musician, Erin Smith, both frequent the Tiki Lounge—so that’s a swell start. The lights and special effects are cool but won’t trigger epilepsy. Too, dancing is cardiointensive, so you can carbo-load with their Best Local Pizza. But that said, any beastly booty shakin’ is up to you. However, when your “spine unwinds... let your backbone flip but don’t slip a disc,” or regular @ReqB (Brendan Smith) of @RequestsHI will Tweet about it. 1913 S. Runner-Up: Casanova Italian Restaurant and Deli, Makawao

LOCAL VISUAL ARTIST Ron Pitts I suppose it’s fitting that I met Ron Pitts at the Tiki Lounge in Kihei. The ex-Navy and tugboat engineer and iconoclast from Boston has some of his best artwork adorning the walls there, as well as Ambrosia, the swanky little nightclub just across the parking lot. He impressed me early on with his tugboat-themed cartoons, and soon after I asked him to illustrate Eh Brah! and, later, the cover of my book. I used to drive him nuts with my simple “Works for me” e-mail responses to his submissions, but every time I looked at his work I shook my head with wonder. His tiki-related stuff at Tiki Lounge is hilarious, but then walk over to Ambrosia and gaze into his mind-blowing rendering of John Lennon’s glasses. Or his “Rain Dancing” – it’s just a simple image of a puddle on a brick-laid sidewalk, but Pitts’ use of color and detail is elating. You can see his work each week in these pages, adding vibrant and often irreverent color to Eh Brah!, but he belongs in a gallery or Mad Magazine or both. Someday… @apignataro

Channel 53 Council Hearings When you hear “entertainment,” it’s possible an hourslong discussion of local government isn’t the first thing that pops into your mind. But if you’ve ever caught a Maui County Council meeting—either in person or on Akaku Channel 53—you know they’re more entertaining than they have any right to be. It starts with our decidedly colorful council, populated with opinionated, outsized and contrasting personalities. You can question their loyalties—and, in some cases, competence—but there isn’t one member you can classify as boring. And we haven’t even mentioned the diverse and sundry testifiers—earnest, intelligent, indignant, belligerent—who take the lectern for a few minutes of on-the-record glory (best is when a particularly animated individual is asked to stay for follow-up questioning). Whether you’re a hard-core public-affairs junkie or just looking for an amusing way to kill a little time, this is, if not riveting, at least better than a lot of the other crap that’s on. Best Record Store (Whether or Not By Default) Requests, Wailuku For many of us, it is a shrine. The only legitimate record store on Maui, Requests has stood the test of time. It’s an eclectic Maui institution, with merchandise packed from floor to ceiling and curios (like the original Toda Store clock, Spock giving the Vulcan salute and neon Gwar posters, all affectionately called “Requests relics”) filling every space in between. Purveyors of audible art, it is a haven for music lovers. From vinyl to CDs, music is king; but books, DVDs, tchotchkes, stickers and shirts are also fair fare at this sensationally bizarre realm of beats and much more. Stamped on the floor and from a hanging marquee are evidence of the basement’s former incarnations—the Freaky Tiki and Malice in Wonderland—where many Maui youth spent some glory days. 10 N. Great brews from all over the world joined ono grinds and live entertainment to make for one incredible day. LOCAL RADIO DJ Alaka’i Paleka Morning Goddess KPOA 93.5 She’s done it again. MauiTime’s readership bows down to the Morning Goddess. Her voice taps the syrup of every wise auntie who’s ever lived, and with her M-F, 6-10am show scoring the soundtrack to our commutes, she (true to her name’s meaning) “guides” us through our AM rituals. I too know the pith of this DJ deity’s sway, and as a keiki heeded her call to “get up, brush teeth, wash face and comb your hair”—only un-gluing my ears from my boom box long enough to hotfoot it to the school bus as it came barreling down the road (KPOA piped over the bus’s speakers too, of course). Heard the world-over (I’ve even met Kansans who livestream her), she’s a Mauian’s Mauian, with lazer beam lashes, a flair for the fabulous and a heart for all Hawaii and its music. (P.S. Dear Shaggy: C’mon. You know your audience is too blazed to win you this one. Consider it a compliment.) @anuheayagi

Runner-Up: Shaggy, Q103

LOCAL FACEBOOK FAN PAGE Old Lahaina Luau As of this writing 2,590 people “Like” Old Lahaina Luau on Facebook. From these peeps, 110 photos have been tagged of this perennial “Best Luau/ Dinner Show” winner—many being shots of the stage

show, a few of the food and cultural practices (unearthing kalua from the imu, pounding poi , weaving ti, etc.) and lots of mai tai-happy tourists yoked in purple orchid leis. But what these photos and Wall Posts from Likers show—perhaps even better than the Old Lahaina Luau’s commercial Web site ever could—is just how excited people are about escaping to the fire-flinging, umi-undulating Polynesian paradise of their wildest imaginations. And Old Lahaina Luau does not disappoint. Like! Facebook. com (search “Old Lahaina Luau”) @anuheayagi

Runner-Up: Star Noodle, facebook.com (search “Star Noodle”)

LOCAL TWITTER FEED MauiTime (@mauitime) Aw, shucks. Basically whatever we write here will come across as either: a) false humility; or b) shameless self-congratulation. So we’ll just take this opportunity to thank our hundreds of followers, and to promise that we’ll keep striving to refine and improve the content we put out, whether through microblogging, social networking, Web or our print edition. Oh, and if you don’t follow us yet, we invite you to do so. We’ll make it worth your clicks. (OK, a wee bit of shameless self-congratulation: A shoutout to Publisher Tommy Russo—@tommyrusso to his followers—who got MauiTime and its staff on Twitter back when most people still thought it was something birds did in the morning, and who continues to be one of the most prodigious, and savvy, techies on-island.) @mauitime @jacobshafer

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT LOCAL BLOG A Maui Blog Visit Liza Pierce’s blog (tagline: “talking story since 2006”) and you’ll find meandering, easygoing musings on the people, places and things that make Maui, Maui. To quote from Pierce’s own mission statement, the goal is “to promote Maui’s beautiful island, unique culture and aloha spirit.” In a place where blogging, social networking and other new forms of content delivery have yet to be widely adopted, we salute A Maui Blog for taking the plunge and contributing something meaningful to the conversation. amauiblog.com @jacobshafer

Runner-Up: MauiTime Blogs (mauifeed. com, mauidish.com, mauivents.com)

LOCAL CLUB DJ DJ Blast When hip-hop began it’s rise back in the ‘80s, DJ Blast was just getting deep into the scene, mixing video on VHS for Banana Moon. Today, visual elements are still “a very important aspect” for DJ Blast, who with his crew projects montages onto an 8-foot screen amidst swirling dance hall lights. His company ChillTown Productions has been

going strong for more than 20 years, and gets the crowd hopping everywhere from late-night venues (like Best Place to Dance, South Shore Tiki Lounge, every Monday night) to private parties and special events. @anuheayagi

Runner-Up: DJ Del Sol

KARAOKE Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar A few months ago, I popped my karaoke cherry at the south side Sansei—and won a $50 gift certificate to boot. My prize barely covered the liquid courage it took to earn it, but it was swell nonetheless. Maybe that’s one reason MauiTime readers voted Sansei the best place to belt it out. Because even if you’ve got poorly-calibrated pipes like mine, hosts still smile and encourage you to sing a song or five. Too, the crowd is ever-enthusiastic, and the reciprocity of happy energy between seats and stage makes for a fun atmosphere. Join them during their late night dining hours, Thursday-Sunday, 10pm-1am, and peruse books amply stocked with hits. They don’t offer prizes every night, but their half-off late-night sushi deals are winning anytime. 600 Office Rd., Lahaina, 6696286; 1881 South Kihei Rd. #KT-116, Kihei, 879-0004, sanseihawaii.com @anuheayagi

Runner-Up: Kobe Japanese Steak House, Lahaina

OPEN MIC NIGHT TIE: Moana Bakery & Cafe, Maui Brewing Co. Check, check. One, two. I love ties. It means more winners! And, in the case of this category, more opportunities to express, well, whatever it is you’re intent on expressing (I chuckled at one vote for “anyplace you can cut the sound off, if need be”). Whether its Wednesday on the West side or Tuesday night on the North Shore, there’s an open mic waiting for you. The format for open mic night is pretty standard wherever you go, so it’s the mood of a place that makes it meritorious. Moana Bakery & Cafe is a Baldwin Avenue mainstay that’s all colorful coziness and, frankly, I need but say “brew pub” to get the point across for Maui Brew Co. Both locales lend themselves to the acts being paid attention to, with sound systems that aren’t overpowering and a welcoming, neighborhood feel. Moana: 71 Baldwin Ave., Paia, 579-9999; Maui Brew Co., 4405 Honoapiilani Hwy. #217, Lahaina, 669-3474, mauibrewingco.com @anuheayagi

Picks

This Week's Picks Going Upcountry?

PHOTO COURTESTY OF FAVIANNA.COM

Country rebels rejoice, there are tons of far-out happenings this and next weekend. On Friday (July 23), visit the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center’s Solarium for a free slide lecture and panel discussion by current artists in residence, Favianna Rodriguez and Orlando Reyes (6-8pm). Rodriguez is known the globe over for her progressive printmaking that witnesses “the changing U.S. metropolis and new diaspora in the arts…dealing with issues such as war, immigration, globalization, and social movements.” Reyes is the founding director of the critically acclaimed 58 Gallery; his work concentrates on Flemish oil painting and the color theory of Matisse, often on the topic of AIDS, art censorship and corporate irresponsibility. [Free, 6-8pm, 2841 Baldwin Ave., Makawao, 5726560] Roll down Baldwin to Charley’s for a night with The Neverminds. Boogie-oogie-oogie-oogie to their set list—which looks kind of like my iPod’s play list—with covers from bands like The Kings of Leon, MGMT, Franz Ferdinand, Green Day, Modest Mouse, The Clash, Weezer, The Ramones, Oasis, The Pixies, Cracker, The Vines, Harvey Danger, Sublime, The Killers, Elvis Costello, The Raconteurs, Cheap Trick, Supergrass, Sex Pistols and of course, Lady Gaga. [$5 cover, 9:30pm, 142 Hana Hwy., Paia, 579-9453] After your recovery from this most excellent Friday night, start preparing for next week. On Thursday (July 29), at Casanova, is the 2nd Annual Body SLAM—“the literary equivalent to a mosh pit,” say organizers. They’re upping the ante this year, taking a similar tone to this best-ever Best of Maui issue, with “3-D” body painting by Rachel Deboer. Transforming wahine models into black-light robots (yes, robots), Deboer and her crew showcase their skills with brushon-skin media, using ChromaDepth technique. Special glasses will be passed out to audience members, which will give these flesh and blood paintings further illusion of depth. As for the poetry slam itself, it’s a “no rules” event, where team pieces, musical accompaniment, props, etc. are not just allowed, they’re encouraged. At the end of the night, the three top-ranked poets will split a $100 cash prize. All this and more, to the turntable styling of DJ Boomshot. [$5 cover, 9:30pm, 1188 Makawao Ave., Makawao, 572-0220] It’s the 40th anniversary of Rainbow Bridge (a Jimi Hendrix flick largely shot Upcounrty), and Puka Puka is celebrating with an opening reception for “Far Art,” on Friday (July 30). Featuring work by local counterculture movement forerunners from the late ’60s, the showcase exhibits how these artists, “exchanged the consciousness of art for the art of consciousness.” Show runs through December 31, featuring William Ballantine, Richard Fields, Rick Griffin, Jim Loomis, Tom Mitchell, Neal Norris, John Schofill, John Severson, Louise Severson, Todd Swan and Joana Varawa. [6-9pm, 43, Hana Hwy., Paia, 579-3080] A great way to follow up the showcase reception is with P.O.R.T.A.L., live at Moana Bakery and Cafe. Their name stands for People of Revolutionary Thought and Living, and of their song “Geppeto’s Dream,” my predecessor Kate Bradshaw eloquently mused it’s a “tune that starts out with a strange melody invocative of sunken ships and broken dolls in hurricane-torn attics [with] an evil robot of an electronic drumbeat.” [No cover, 71 Baldwin Ave., Pa’ia, 579-9999]

You like skim- and body-boarding. You like Makena in its current, unspoiled state. So it follows that you’ll want to make time for the third annual Save Makena/ Maui Skimmers SkimBoard/Body-Board Competition, presented by Maui Tomorrow and the Surfrider Foundation. Prizes will be awarded in five categories from youth to advanced, with kane and wahine groups. (Entry forms can be found at savemakena.org.) In addition to the competition, there’ll be informational booths and speakers, grinds and, surely, all manner of cool, conscious local peeps. Whether you come to cheer the competitors or get educated about conserving a precious slice of the ‘aina (or, ideally, both) this is a more than worthy way to wile away a Saturday. 3573143, savemakena.org [Jacob Shafer]

Kirtan, an ancient form of devotional Hindu chanting, is something that has to be experienced. I could dedicate a couple hundreds words to describing it, but you’d be no closer to understanding what it’s about; in fact, I’d probably only make it sounds weird or cheesy. In actuality it can be a moving, surprisingly visceral experience, whatever your religious and spiritual beliefs. If you’re intrigued (or have already discovered kirtan’s power), head out to The Studio Maui this weekend for an evening with Krishna Das, who, the inside jacket of his new book, Chants of a Lifetime, declares, “has been called ‘the chant master of American yoga’ by the New York Times. Das will be joined by Daniel Paul, as the two perform “their first-ever public kirtan together. Show up early to nibble healthy grinds and raw dessert, sip chai and rub elbows with fellow enthusiasts. 575-9390, thestudiomaui.com [JS]
