Coconut Wireless Racism and the Races Dirty campaign tactics aren’t unique to Hawaii. Neither are racial tension and provincialism. What is unique is the sometimes charming, sometimes divisive, always muddled way we define “local.” And when that gets mixed up with election season, the pot boils over. Take the dustup this week

“He dismisses my 35 years of service to the people of Hawaii.” Hannemann isn’t the only candidate playing the “local” card and, by extension, the race card. It’s commonplace at both the county and state level. Sometimes it’s done subtly, sometimes overtly, but rarely is it publicly denounced. Even Abercrombie stopped short of calling Hannemann’s attack racist.

Court of Appeals. “Justice Recktenwald is highly regarded in the legal community and I have confidence that he will guide our courts in ensuring the rule of law is upheld and the tenants of our Constitution are protected,” Lingle said in a prepared statement. Lingle didn’t mention Katherine Leonard, who the Senate voted down on August 6, but she did tout Recktenwald’s “exceptional leadership ability and strong administrative experience.” In rejecting Leonard, several Senators questioned her ability to handle the administrative side of the job. Per the state constitution, the Senate now has 30 days to decide on Recktenwald. The safe money seems to be on confirmation. Then again, it’s never wise to underestimate the dysfunctional relationship between Lingle and the legislature.

Taking Fish to Save Fish between Democratic gubernatorial frontrunners Mufi Hannemann and Neil Abercrombie. It began with a Hannemann campaign mailer that asked voters to “Compare and Decide.” The first two bullet points, under the heading “Personal,” contrasted the candidates’ birth places—Hannemann was born on Oahu, Abercrombie in New York—and their wives’ names. Hannemann’s wife’s name is Gail Mukaihata Hannemann; Abercrombie’s wife’s name is Nancie Caraway. (Caraway also has a middle name—Ellen—though it wasn’t mentioned in the mailer.) The implication is clear: Hannemann is local, Abercrombie is an outsider. That’s been a consistent theme for Mufi; in a widely reported speech to the Hawaii Carpenters Union in July, Hannemann told the crowd, “I look like you. You look like me.” Abercrombie blasted the mailer, saying it’s “not what a Governor does.” “He’s asking you to compare the fact that he was born [here] and I was born on the Mainland,” said Abercrombie in a release.

Recently, one politician went that far. In an August 8 Honolulu Star-Advertiser op ed published under the headline “Racism and localism in Hawaii politics has dark side” (begging the question, do they have a light side?), Ed Case denounced the “closed view that only local counts,” which “fosters the politics of division and exclusion...and belittles those who, while not meeting some definitions of local, contribute equally if not more to Hawaii.” Then again, Case only wrote that after he dropped out of the race for Hawaii’s 1st Congressional District seat. It’d be nice to see more candidates reject these tactics (i.e. grow a pair) before being pushed to the sidelines.

Chief Justice, Take Two A week after the Senate rejected her first choice for Chief Justice, Gov. Lingle tried again, nominating Associate Justice Mark Recktenwald. Lingle appointed Recktenwald to the Supreme Court last year; before that he headed up the Intermediate

Not just any reef fish, though; the targets were roi (peacock grouper), to‘au (blacktail snapper) and ta‘ape (blue-line snapper), three predatory invasive species. Roi were introduced in the ’50s, ironically to bolster sagging fish stocks. In all, 74 divers caught 254 roi, 12 ta‘ape and 5 to‘au at the annual Roi Roundup. (Bragging rights for biggest haul went to Dean Kawamura and Bryan Nakamoto, who caught 31 apiece.) According to a County estimate, each predator can eat an average of 146 fish a year, meaning tens of thousands of indigenous fish were potentially saved—at least until the eels, injection wells and aquarium collectors get them.

A Clarification Last week, we ran an item in this space about the Judge Leonard rejection. It featured a lengthy quote from Maui Sen. Roz Baker, who voted against Leonard, followed by a one-word sentence: “Sexist!” The idea was to contrast Baker’s thoughtful, measured remarks against the accusations—from Gov. Lingle and others—that the Senate vote was motivated by sexism. Apparently some didn’t get the sarcasm—including Sen. Baker’s office. In an e-mail, a Baker aide confessed to being “baffled.” It isn’t the first time our snarky tone has gotten lost in translation, and it won’t be the last. ver the next month we’ll examine the various state and county races, culminating in endorsements before the September 18 primary. This week, we look at the three state House races that feature more than one candidate from the same party.

State Rep. District 8 Name: THOMAS CERIZO Party: Democrat ProďŹ le: Cerizo, an insurance agent who says he has 30 years of experience in the industry, didn’t file a campaign spending report, indicating his fundraising efforts have been minimal. He also didn’t respond to our candidate questionnaire and we couldn’t find a campaign Web site. Web site: Unknown Name: JUSTIN HUGHEY Party: Democrat ProďŹ le: A teacher who moonlights as a waiter, Hughey not surprisingly makes education reform his central issue. Ideas he proposes include moving away from standardized testing and creating “a broader definition of student achievementâ€?; giving principals, rather than the Department of Education, control over day-to-day operations; and offering incentives to attract and retain local teachers. A community organizer and ordained minister who has previously made bids for the County Council and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs board, she favors environmental and Native Hawaiian issues. In a 2008 MauiTime profile, Kama said that “we have to expand our economic base... to work the land, and move to renewable energy sources.â€? He has also aligned himself with the Maui Tea Party, and recently expressed opposition to civil union bill HB444 on MauiTime’s Facebook page, stating that the bill “doesn’t ‘add’ civil rights, it takes them away.â€? Last week, Congress passed and President Obama signed a $26 billion stimulus package to fund state-level Medicaid programs and reduce teacher and other non-federal public employee layoffs. Here’s what Gov. Lingle had to say about the bill:

Actually, it’s not just “the Democrats in Congress” gress” who contend that. The $26 billion will be covered vered by closing foreign tax loopholes and making cuts to the federal food stamp program; it’s in the text of the bill. Lingle must know that,, because she goes on to say...

“What’s even more troubling is in order to pay for this latest $26 billion bailout of states, the Democrat-controlled Congress cut almost most $12 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition on Assistance Program (formerly known as food ood stamps), at a time when a record number of Americans–including almost 141,300 Hawaii residents–depend on this assistance to subsidize their food purchases.” So Lingle’s opposed to federal assistance, except when she’s for it. Oh, also: cuts to the food stamp program were inserted as a concession to Republicans. And it (sort of) worked: two Republicans actually voted for the bill, a small miracle these days. Ah, but when has Lingle ever let facts get in the way of finger-pointing?

OUT OF THE FRYING PAN, INTO THE NEO-NAZISM A recent surge of neo-Nazism in several countries—including, improbably, Israel, and Mongolia (where some dark-skinned natives are rabidly anti-Chinese)—has generally been denounced, but Corinna Burt credited it with rescuing her from a life of acting in pornographic videos. According to a hategroup watchdog, the Portland, Oregon, woman is “the most prominent National Socialist Movement organizer in the Pacific Northwest.” In an August interview with Gawker.com, the white-supremacist Burt (a mother of two and a professional embalmer who is also into bodybuilding) said she terminated her porn career (as “Cori Lou,” doing mostly bondage and “torture” films) because, “If we [Caucasians] consider ourselves a master race then we have to act like a master race, not degenerates.”

GETTING CRAPPED ON, IN A GOOD WAY Though volunteers got the project started in May, Ventnor City, New Jersey, continued through the summer to seek financial donations to finish the new restrooms that provide relief for those visiting the town’s Atlantic shore. Said Commissioner Stephen Weintrob, “How would someone like to have a toilet named after themselves, or a urinal or sink?”

INCREDITABLE A Treasury Department inspector general reported in June that, out of 2.6 million applicants for federal mortgage relief, 14,000 “home buyers” wrongly received tax credits and that in fact, 1,300 of them were living in prison at the time of filing, including 241 serving life sentences. Sixtyseven of the 14,000 received tax credits for the same house, and 87 more potentially fraudulent tax-credit applications were filed by Internal Revenue Service employees.

GOOD NEWS FOR RAPISTS (1) California requires that if a sex offender’s GPS tagging device signals that he’s in a prohibited area, parole agents must immediately respond, but that law was easier to pass than to implement. As of June, according to a San Diego UnionTribune investigation, the state had fallen about 31,000 responses behind. (2) A July Illinois law requires that all hospital “rape kits” on victims be tested for blood and DNA (in that finding a rapist, and certainly convicting him, without such evidence is often hopelessly difficult). Until now, 80 percent of the rape kits taken in the state had sat, untested. (As TV police dramas emphasize, many rape victims are reluctant to submit to the indignity of swabbing and photographing so soon after being violated and comply only because detectives assure them of the rape kit’s importance.)

NOT TAXED ENOUGH ALREADY It is common knowledge that American corporations avoid taxes by running U.S. profits through offshore “tax havens” like the Cayman Islands and Bermuda, but a May Bloomberg Business Week investigation traced the specific steps that the pharmaceutical company Forest Labs takes to short the U.S. Treasury. Although Forest’s antidepressant Lexapro is sold only in the U.S., the company’s patent is held by an Irish subsidiary (and since 2005, shared with a Bermuda subsidiary in a tax-code hocus-pocus that insiders call the “Double Irish”), which allows the vast majority of the $2 billion Forest earns a year on Lexapro to be taxed at Ireland’s low rate (and at Bermuda’s rate of zero). Bloomberg estimates that the U.S. Treasury loses at least $60 billion annually by corporations’ “transfer pricing”—enough to pay for the entire Department of Homeland Security for a year.

INCOMPETENT COPS In March, four NYPD officers, acting on department intelligence, went to the home of Walter and Rose Martin in Brooklyn, looking for a suspect, and broke a window as they worked their way inside. The Martins, retired and in their 80s, were clean, and a police spokesman later admitted that officers had wrongly visited or raided the Martins’ home more than 50 times since 2002 because of a stubborn computer glitch. t’s a familiar refrain, especially during election season: “We pay their salaries—they work for us.” Usually when people say that, they’re talking about high-ranking officials, though of course it’s true about all government employees. But what a lot of people don’t know is exactly how much they’re paying.

Government salaries are public record; however, at the county level the figures aren’t available online. That means getting them requires filing a records request, something we realize many don’t have the time or inclination to do. So we did it for you. To be clear, our purpose isn’t necessarily to point out who’s overpaid or underpaid. We merely want to present this information and let each individual make his or her own judgement.

A FEW NOTES: As outlined in the County Charter, the salaries of elected officials and appointed directors are set by the Salary Commission. The salary of the Mayor has not increased since 2007, while the salaries of department directors has remained unchanged since 2009. Mai Tai Me Up Next year, mark your calendars for Kona’s amazing ode to the quintessential Hawaii cocktail

A

h, Kona. You think sleepy little Kailua town on the Big Island, but think again. Once a year Kona wakes up in a wash of Bacardi rum when the Don the Beachcomber Mai Tai Festival kicks off. With top mixologist talent coming in from all across the state (including some Maui peeps; more on that later) and international participants and judges like William Ramos and rum expert Jeff “Beachbum” Berry, the town goes all out. Kona is packed with fun bars and charming cantinas within walking distance of the Royal Kona Resort where the Mai Tai Festival is held, making it the hot spot to party every August. For this year’s second annual crowning of the king of mai tais, the event stepped it up a notch with a $10,000 prize, a concert by Third Eye Blind, food booths and a tasting contest, entertainment by Henry Kapono and Eric Gilliom and, of course, mai tais as far as the eye could see. The festivities began with an opening Friday evening reception, which gave way to a DJ Brad Hargraeves dance party. I knew I was in the right place when I noticed all the Brad Parker art in the lobby; they had his originals and prints for sale in the gift shop. (For those who don’t know, Parker illustrated the cover of MauiTime’s recent 3D Best of Maui issue.) The bar, which had more than ten different mai tais available, is built over a

lava jetty so there’s ocean ean all around you, creating ng a ing perfect Polynesian setting replete with beautiful big tikis. Hargraeves—who’s o’s also the drummer for Third Eye Blind—rocked ked the spot ’til the wee hours, his drum sounds ds flowing over his dancee mixes, while we tested d the Bacardi waters and embarked on a few walking-distance pub crawl missions, including Lu Lu’s, Humpy’s and Rosa’s Cantina.

The Competition With $10,000 on the line, the mixologists pulled out all the stops. Judged on presentation, nose, palate, finish, balance, creativity and trueness to form, each mai tai could earn up to 350 points. Contestants had just seven minutes to prepare their drinks and serve them with flair. Judges sniffed, scrutinized, sipped and scored. Some mixologists stripped, some forfeited and some served up amazing concoctions that wowed the judging panel,

which consisted of: William Ramos, Bacardi brand master; Juan Coronado, Bacardi brand master apprentice; Chris Teves, Publisher of Hawaii Beverage Guide; Eric Gilliom, of the Barefoot Natives; and BeachBum Berry. Maui had five mixologists vying for the prize: Julie Henson from Kahale’s; Blair Anderson and Ryan Burden of Mala Ocean Tavern; Amy Day of Lahaina Grill; and Jeff Felice of Pailolo at Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas. There was some stiff competition with that kind of money on the line, and in the end it was Christian Self from Oahu’s ThirtyNineHotel who took the top score with his amazing Mai Tai Twist. Looking like a secret service agent of molecular mixology in his black tie and shades, he whipped up the judges favorite with tend finesse. He made his mai tai on the grand

he concept behind Napua Makua’s latest project Mohalu—and yes, she says, they’re not just albums, but projects—represents the point in life Makua feels she’s in. And it’s a good place to be. “Mohalu is the phase three nights before the full moon,â€? she explains. “It literally means to blossom, to unfold. [Cultural] practitioners do things according to the moon’s phases, and believe it’s the perfect night to start things on—when secrets are revealed and flowers bloom to perfection.â€? As if this vivacious kumu hula—who in 2008 was named Female Vocalist of the Year at the Na Hoku Hanohano awards, and whose Halau Na Lei Kaumaka O Uka has already twice won at the Merrie Monarch Festival—had not already come into her own well before the spry age of 36, she feels she has now (though, laughing, she adds, “It took me awhileâ€?). “There are some moon phases where nothing you start is going to be productive. Like, no sense even leave your house,â€? she says, in her candid Pidgin lilt. “But Mohalu also means to be comfortable and at ease. That’s how I feel in my life. I know who I am. I know where I came from. I know where I want to go.â€? There’s a crystalline tone of confidence when she says the word “go.â€? It’s as if her very breath propelled her affirmation into the future and it reverberated back, confirming its truth. It’s that kind of easy poise that makes Makua so magnetic, as evidenced by the droves of good friends and extended ‘ohana who—Maui style—happen by and stop to talk story as we conduct our interview at Kula’s CafĂŠ 808. For a woman so young, she’s already touched innumerable lives. Her many years as a dancer—culminating with scrupulous ‘uniki training (to become a kumu hula), under the tutelage of Hokulani Holt-Padilla—has led to more than 15 years heading her halau. It’s a career that lends itself to being a Hawaiian music recording artist, she says, as a mechanism to perpetuate her artistic specialty. Beyond regularly traversing the 808 to gig, teach and record, Makua also travels seven or eight times a year to Japan (where the

She’s also taught at Kamehameha Schools Maui Campus for the last five years, and at Seabury Hall for the last two. Part of what drives her as an educator is her own—at first lackluster—schooling experience. “Acting a fool at Kalama school,� she jokes of middle school years when she wishes teachers had the time and motivation to help her “snap out of it� and make something of her talent. It’s the kind of nurturing she found as a high school boarder at Kamehameha Schools on Oahu, and the kind she hopes to impart upon her own pupils. “Nobody tells our kids they’ve got talent. Nobody told me until I went to Kamehameha,� says Makua, who says that attending boarding school “probably saved my life.� But earning that belief wasn’t easy. “I frustrated him to no end,� Makua says of her voice instructor at Kamehameha. “To him, I was this country kid—this bumpkin kid from Makawao. Going to Honolulu, I had no concept of opera. And that’s what they trained me as, an opera singer. One day, he slammed on his piano and was like, ‘You’re wasting my time!’ He threw his piano bench and told me to never come back. “It rocked me to my core,� she continues. “I remember running back to my dorm— can’t run fast enough. Tears were just coming down, but I didn’t want anyone to seem me cry. So I just put my head down and ran. And I just cried. I cried until I threw up. I was that upset.� But her mother, famed vocalist Hulu Linsey, told her to suck it up and return to

class stronger than ever. She did. “That man,� she says with great adoration, “after two years, he got the school to pay for me to go to his teacher, because he said he couldn’t teach me anymore. He drove me off campus every weekend for my junior and senior year so I could go to those voice lessons. He did this,� Makua says, touching her chest. She’s a powerful storyteller, and speaks with rich tones and expressive hands. “What can I say? I’m a hula person,� Makua says of her impassioned animation and being honest to a fault—and proud of it. “

his is not an easy lifestyle,� she says of sometimes having had to prioritize her dancers over her daughters. “I’m accountable to people. It drives me even more. I’ve always felt accountable to my family and to my kumu, but I’m also accountable to all these people I grew up with and who have a history with me—to become that person they can be proud of.� Despite the sacrifices her career demands, when Makua talks about the concept of Mohalu—and the strength she takes in being comfortable at last—she immediately and almost unconsciously talks about her two daughters and husband (her “Prince Charming,� who she married a year ago, changing her surname from Greig). This amalgam of music videos, comic books, anime, manga and video games exists in a world where all of those things are a part of daily life, with thought bubbles, visible sound effects, impromptu martial arts battles and musical numbers popping up at random. Much of it is dazzling and very funny.

The third film by Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright plays like a cross between Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Wright’s own TV show, Spaced, which was also an energized, popculture fused spoof. The ultra-brisk editing makes large spans of time rush by, with each scene whittled down to only the most necessary elements. Cera and Winstead are wonderful at conveying the angst and detached longing of Gen-Z romantics, though their romance is only slightly deeper

and more electric than the neutral passion of the Twilight leads. Brandon Routh, the star of Superman Returns, is the funniest of Pilgrim’s foes, playing an evil variation on the perfect boyfriend. Chris Evans and Jason Schwartzman also shine as psycho exes. The fight scenes are wild, violent without being bloody and so frenetic and CGI-heavy, they make The Matrix seem leisurely by comparison. I liked the depiction of video game battles and player statistics being a stand-in for how we deal

with romantic baggage. Wright exploits and mocks everything that is popular with teens right now: text messaging, gaming, Internet obsessions, American and Japanese animation, graphic novels, drama-filled high school romances, pop music, identity experimentation—all of it gets thrown into the wash, for better or worse. Some of this approaches brilliance, but the film is over-directed and at times obnoxious and overbearing. There are scenes so silly (like a musical number with singing shebeasts) that they threaten to derail the whole enterprise. Whether you “get” and appreciate all the pop culture references or not, this is purely a cult movie; a little overkill goes a long way. I’m ready for Wright to make a film that isn’t a spoof or homage. Yet Wright’s film tries new things, never panders and takes a lot of chances. Adventurous filmgoers should definitely check this out. Heralded as Hawaii’s Renaissance man, George Kahumoku, Jr. is not simply a master slack key guitarist and multiple Grammy and Na Hoku Hanohano award-winner—he’s a visual artist, entrepreneur, farmer and teacher (both at Lahainaluna and UH Maui College; plus his summertime Maui Slack Key Guitar & Ukulele Workshop, now 13 years running). Kahumoku’s pal Dennis Kamakahi (who, in 1974, succeeded legend Gabby Pahinui in the group Sons of Hawaii) also has a shiny bevy of awards on his mantel, and is considered one of Hawaiian music’s most prolific composers, with over 500 songs—many of them local classics—under his belt. The opportunity to see either perform live is a treat, so the chance to see them both is not to be missed. This Friday, Da Ukulele Boyz will open for the prestigious pair at Stella Blue’s popular Supper Club. Not to be confused with the rapper formerly known as J Boog (now just “Boog”), of B2K and You Got Served fame, Polynesian powerhouse J-Boog has been an island music sensation since his 2007 debut album, Hear Me Roar. Ironically, both Boogs were raise in Compton, California, but our Boog (born Jerry Afemata) now calls Hawaii home (and one-ups the other guy in that his dad is chief of their family village in Aloa, Samoa). Recorded in Jamaica, his new album Back Yard Boogie features reggae notables like Richie Spice, Tarrus Riley and Morgan Heritage, and the oft-on-the-airways hit “Let’s Do It Again,” produced by Donovan “Don Corleon” Bennett. As Shaggy of Q103 once pointed out during his show, when J-Boog croons “let’s do it again,” it implies that “it” has already been done (at least) once.Yowzer… With J-Boog’s escalating island celebrity, his Casanova appearance is sure to be sold-out— especially with DJ Westafa and Maui’s own Cool Progression in tow. Spandex onesies and crotch-killing (so-called) seats? I’d rather bathe in gasoline and strike a match, thanks. If careening white-knuckled down Haleakala isn’t cruel and unusual punishment enough, biking up one of the world’s steepest lengthto-height-ratio roadways is. “The ride climbs 10,000 feet over 36 miles and reaches gradients up to 14 percent,â€? says Donnie Arnoult, Cycle to the Sun race organizer and Category One pro racer. “[It’s] one of the most difďŹ cult bike climbs in the world,â€? Arnoult adds. “As a comparison, the famed Mont Ventou in the Tour de France is only a 5,336-foot climb over 13.6 miles.â€? Needless to say, this challenging race—slated for Saturday—is for the cycle-savvy only. Beginning at the Paia Bypass, the course follows Baldwin Avenue through Makawao town, up Olinda Road to the Old Haleakala Highway and finally winding up Crater Road to the summit of Haleakala. Competitors in this time trial (capped at 6.5 hours to reach the top) can choose from making the whole 36-mile haul ($200 entry fee), a 19-mile half-race to an elevation of 5,500 feet ($150 entry fee), or splitting the distance in a two-person relay ($250 entry fee); and each will receive a pair of ofďŹ cial race socks and an environmentally friendly, reusable cloth shopping bag with their race packet. After the race (around 4pm), a private BBQ and awards ceremony will be held for cyclists, where category winners will be laden with merchandise and cash prizes. But the best prize of all (other than finishing the dang race) is that the whole shebang is a beneďŹ t for the Paia Youth Center (so entry fees are tax-deductible). ne summer day in my youth, Mom took me to The Pet Shop. Sitting in a prim little aquarium along the rear wall was a single, white rat. A big orange sticker on the glass said “Only $7.99!â€? This seemed like a pretty good deal, and I talked my mother into letting me buy the poor, lonely thing. Counterintuitive as it may sound, it didn’t take much prodding to get her to agree. See, when she lived in Manoa as a kid she too had a white rat. He was a retired UH lab rat named Merlin, and she’d loved him enough to keep a ďŹ ngernail-sized photograph of him in a miniature heart-shaped frame all these years. She jokes that she doesn’t know what was done to him in the lab, but Merlinwasabnormallybrilliant.Growing up with that story, I came to believe all white rats were brilliant to some degree; and if this $7.99 rat was not yet, my expert care would make it so. The cashier rang up my living purchase (plus a new aquarium, pine shavings and other essentials), put the rat in a tiny cardboard box and sent me on my way. With such imsy accommodations, I was afraid the thing might try to spring from its container like a rabid jack-in-thebox and bound away before I made it past Tasaka’s Guri Guri. But the box proved unnecessary altogether. My new friend was so docile, in fact, that she sat unmoving on my lap the whole ride home to Kula. As soon as I got home, I erected a small shrine to her, accenting the aquarium’s table with a patterned cloth and raking the pine shavings with Zen-garden precision. My new rat just lay there like a lump, staring at me. The next morning, I woke up to ďŹ nd I had 12 rats. My $7.99 rat had squeezed out 11 jelly blobs over the course of the night, and was no longer the docile creature of God she’d been the day before. Gnashing her teeth with perpetual hiss, she wouldn’t so much as let me peer through the glass, let alone touch her. The Pet Shop claimed all sales were ďŹ nal, so the next few months were spent rearing (or rather, letting be reared) the litter. I ended up keeping one as a companion to the ďŹ rst, but neither ever quite settled and the story drags out long and unhappily, capped with a cloud of guilt that lingers to this day. Let’s just say I’ve been careful and more caring (maybe even manic)

with my pets ever since.

y ex-boyfriend and I had a few exceptional pets in our time (he retains custody). One was a tiny, peach-faced parrot named Waldo who showed up on our doorstep and refused to leave. He’s a specimen of perfection with pronounced color and deďŹ ned features. But the best thing about him is that he fully lives up to his lovebird status. His eyes roll back in his head when you scratch his neck just right, and if he’s not perched proudly on your head, he’ll burrow under your collar, poke his head out and watch TV with you. I dreamed of Waldo the other night. Well, I dreamed of something like Waldo. In the dream, a pet store had opened in Wailuku and I high-tailed it in to get a new beloved bird. It didn’t take long to discover the parrot was damaged goods. Unlike real-life Waldo, the thing didn’t automatically know how to y to my ďŹ nger or perch on my head. Its cyan and apple green wings looked like they’d been caught in a sifter, and its beak was so obnoxiously odd-shaped, it made the pitiable creature cross-eyed. I was proud nonetheless and immediately decided to bring it to work for show and tell. Whereas with Waldo I might have been able to put on an aerial show, this dreamt-up alternate opped in a small circle around my ofďŹ ce before exhausting itself by trying to hold its misshaped head up. No one said much in the dream except my editor, who took one look at it and offered this: “Hmm. Well, I hope it gets better.â€?

love pet stores for supplies and whatnot, but personally have never had much luck—real or imaginary—with actual purchased pets. The Maui Humane Society, on the other hand, is a sureďŹ re bet for ďŹ nding the furry friend of your dreams—and one in need— especially with experts on hand at this Saturday’s big Adopt-a-thon, running 10am-3pm. â–
