MATT FOSTER created this week’s cover illustration, along with our primary election endorsement cover back in September (you can see a version of that one on page 7). Foster uses “found textures” to make his unique digital prints, and ran with the challenge of combining the Halloween in Lahaina controversy with a larger election theme. Speaking of running, he recently competed in the XTERRA race, finishing 4th in his age division with an impressive time of 57:08. Truly a Renaissance man. Coconut Wireless RESTORING SANITY IN HAWAII

W

hether or not you’re a fan of The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, you’ve almost certainly heard of the comedian/anchorman’s Rally to Restore Sanity, set to take place October 30 in Washington, D.C. (Along with, of course, brilliant blowhard Stephen Colbert’s competing Rally to Restore Fear.) The idea is to combat the wave of increasingly divisive and inflammatory rhetoric that has swept the country. “We’re looking for people who think shouting is annoying, counterproductive and terrible for your throat; who feel that the loudest

from both parties have been invited to attend and answer questions—with the caveat that they can’t stump or spew election rhetoric. “If their answers stray into political-land, their microphone will be cut,” reads a press release. “Especially given some of the extremely close races…it will be very telling who makes time to come.” More info can be found at sanityhonolulu.com.

Neil Abercrombie, Aiona’s Democratic opponent, accused Aiona of using the proposal to gloss over his failure to address the issue during two terms as the state’s number two. “Duke Aiona has had the opportunity to help students in Hawaii for the last eight years, yet it is only in the last eight days before the general election that he introduces a plan for higher education,” said Abercrombie.

MAUITIME DEBATES DRAW DISAGREEMENTS, NO-SHOWS

A

s the election draws near, Republican gubernatorial hopeful Duke Aiona has proposed freezing tuition for University of Hawaii students as a way to offset swelling college costs.

According to organizers, local candidates from both parties have been invited to attend and answer questions—with the caveat that they can’t stump or spew election rhetoric. voices shouldn’t be the only ones that get heard; and who believe that the only time it’s appropriate to draw a Hitler mustache on someone is when that person is actually Hitler. Or Charlie Chaplin in certain roles,” reads a statement announcing the rally. If that applies to you but you can’t afford a Mainland flight, a concurrent rally is being organized in Honolulu, along with numerous gatherings across the country and around the world. The Oahu event is set for 11am at the state Capitol. According to organizers, local candidates

Under Aiona’s proposal, announced this week, students entering the UH system on either a two- or four-year track would be guaranteed a fixed rate for the duration of their enrollment. According to statistics cited by Aiona, UH tuition has increased more than 70 percent over the last six years. “Our plan would help parents give their son or daughter a higher education, and students wouldn’t have to drop out due to rising tuition,” said Aiona. The Lieutenant Governor didn’t indicate how UH would absorb the loss of revenue.

auiTime’s election debates aired live on Akaku last week, one of the final chances for candidates to spar with their opponents and deliver their messages to voters. Though each debate featured at least a few contentious moments, perhaps the most notable part of the evening was the noshows: Mayor Charmaine Tavares had a prior commitment and was unable to attend despite repeated attempts to accommodate her. Candidates for the East Maui and Lanai seats also had scheduling conflicts. Every other county candidate confirmed, and all came save one: Wayne Nishiki, who e-mailed us hours before the debate to say he had lost his voice, an unusual problem for the normally outspoken Councilmember. Can religion and politics coexist? Reverend John Heidel thinks so

t 8IJUF $PGGFF

t .VGGJOT

But isn’t the opposition to same-sex unions—along with other things like abortion—backed by Scripture?

Yes. However, so is slavery and the right to stone your child to death for disobedience. Some Christians are seeking a new paradigm of belief, one that is not tied to an understanding of God that is 4,000 years old, where power and control are more important than compassion and service. We are looking at Scripture as a historical and metaphorical document—not as literal truth, but a guide to truth. What, in your view, is an appropriate role for religion to play in an election?

Religion should inform politics and the election process, but not manipulate or coerce. The interconnection between the freedom of religion and the freedom of speech takes careful discernment. While there should not be a religious litmus test to determine a candidate’s qualifications, I think it is important to know how a candidate’s personal faith will impact their political decisions. Within the freedoms we enjoy as Americans, each citizen can match his or her personal views and faith with those of the candidates.

You’ve said that certain religious groups have inserted a “distorted interpretation of Christianity into Hawaii politics. Explain what you mean by that.

It’s a distortion to suggest that a Christian could only vote one way or for a particular candidate. It distorts the Christian message to suggest that some candidates are righteous and others are not. Also that a Christian should be against civil unions for gays and lesbians.

rom civil unions to Duke Aiona’s gubernatorial campaign to state Republican Party Chair Jonah Ka‘auwai’s infamous e-mail, religion has been a consistent—and consistently divisive—part of this election season. What’s been mostly missing is the voice of Hawaii’s religious moderates, people of faith who don’t proselytize on the pulpit-pounding fringe. Reverend John Heidel of the Interfaith Alliance Hawaii wants to change that. This week, Heidel coauthored an op-ed in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser titled “God Not Making Endorsements in Hawaii’s Election. We caught up with Heidel to discuss the relationship between church and state, the role of religion in Hawaii and the sometimes conflicting nature of Scripture.

News. You’ve said that, “Jesus Christ brought people together. He did not separate people,â€? yet according to the Book of Matthew Jesus said, “Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace but a sword.â€? How do you reconcile these seemingly conicting messages?

This relates to my thoughts [about] how we interpret scripture. This passage in Matthew is a good example of something that must be studied in terms of the historical context and the metaphorical meaning. It would take too long to discuss here, but I’m confident the result would reconcile any possible conflict; in fact, there would be no conflict. What’s your take on Republican Party Chair Jonah Ka‘auwai’s statement that Duke Aiona is “operating in the power and the authority of Jesus and that Aiona’s opponents are “unrighteous?

This relates to the litmus test concept and also indicates a person who believes that he speaks from a position of absolute truth. While [Ka‘auwai] has the freedom of speech and the freedom of religion to make such a statement, the general public needs to understand that he does not speak for all Christians. Also, the ultimate word is expressed in private in the voting booth

where each citizen has the freedom to exercise his or her vote according to their individual conscience and personal faith. The majority of religious people are not fanatics, yet fanaticism seems to rule the day—or at least the headlines. Why do you think this is, and what can reasonable people of faith do to combat it?

This is a question I wish all journalists would answer. Why do bad news and violence make the headlines before good news and acts of kindness? The easy answer is because the former sells papers and the latter does not. However, I think it is a lot more complicated. Our American culture is controlled by the values of power, wealth, success and prestige. Imagine a culture where respect, responsibility, compassion, honesty and fairness were the dominant values. Lifting up and modeling these alternative values is one of the purposes of all religions and reasonable, progressive people of faith need to have the moral courage to keep working at it. Fanaticism will always be an option and if people do not have other options from which to choose—and do so—the fanatics will grab the headlines and appear to be winning. â–

YOU WANT SODIUM PROPIONATE WITH THAT? New York City artist Sally Davies offered in October the latest evidence of how unattractive today’s fast foods are to bacteria and maggots. Davies bought a McDonald’s Happy Meal in April, has photographed it daily, and has noted periodically the lack even of the slightest sign of decomposition. Her dog, who circled restlessly nearby for the first two days the vittles were out, since then has ignored it. (Several bloggers, and filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, have made similar discoveries.) Food scientists “credited” a heavy use (though likely still within FDA guidelines) of the preservative sodium propionate but also the predominance of fat and lack of moisture and nutrients—all of which contribute to merely shrinking and hardening the burger and fries.

COMPELLING EXPLANATIONS (1) Raymond Roberts, 25, was arrested in Manatee County, Florida, in September after an ordinary traffic stop turned up a strong smell of marijuana. At deputies’ behest, Roberts removed a baggie of marijuana from his buttocks, but when the deputies saw another plastic bag right behind it (containing a white substance believed to be cocaine), Roberts said, “The weed is [mine],” but “the white stuff is not.” (2) Woody Will Smith, 33, was convicted in September of murdering his wife after a jury in Dayton, Kentucky, deliberated about 90 minutes before rejecting his defense of caffeine intoxication. Smith claimed that his daily intake of sodas, energy drinks and diet pills had made him temporarily insane when he strangled his two-timing wife with an extension cord in 2009, and made him again not responsible when he confessed the crime to police.

COMING UNATTRACTIONS A lawyer in Xian, China, filed a lawsuit in September against a movie house and film distributor for wasting her time— because she was exposed to 20 minutes of advertisements that began at the posted time

for the actual movie to begin. Ms. Chen Xiaomei is requesting a refund equivalent to about $5.20, plus damages of an equal amount and the equivalent of about 15 cents for “emotional” damages—plus an apology.

NO HOTTIES British entrepreneur Howard James, who runs several online dating sites, opened another in August to worldwide attention (and, allegedly, thousands of sign-ups in the first five days): dates for ugly people. James said new members (accepted from the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia and Ireland) will have their photos vetted to keep out “attractive” people. Based on the Web pages available at press time, the photo-evaluation process is working well.

ehbrah@mauitime.com Does anyone care about what’s going on at these Upcountry youth dances? Booty dancing is the only way they dance. What’s booty dancing, you ask? It’s a standing lap-dance where the girl dances with her back facing the boy, “dancing” her booty against him, his hands on her hips or waist. They’re 10 to 16 years old, and they think dancing like this is normal. Why? No one is telling them otherwise. Seems the “wholesome,” “safe” environment they claim to provide gets left at the door with the $8 per-kid entry fee. INCOMPETENT CRIMINALS (1) Xavier Ross, 19, passing by a piano at an art exhibit in front of the Grand Rapids, Michigan, police station in October, could not resist sitting down to play a few notes—and was arrested when officers recognized him from a recent home invasion case. (2) Selma Elmore, 44, was arrested in Lockland, Ohio, in October when she flagged down a police car to ask if there was an arrest warrant out on her. (Officers checked; there was; she ran; the warrant was minor; “resisting arrest” was more serious.) (3) Jason Williams, 38, was convicted in Maidenhead, England, in October of stealing a neighbor’s window curtains, which he had immediately installed on his own windows—in plain view of the neighbor’s window. ■

Our picks in the federal, state and county races ★MAYOR★

★COUNTY COUNCIL★

he ancient Hawaiians were famous for their nautical prowess. From the construction of their craft to the crews that paddled them, foresight, teamwork and a keen understanding of the prevailing conditions were all key to successful voyages over sometimes treacherous waters. During the last four years, Maui, along with the rest of the world, has weathered a serious storm. We’re battered, listing, leaking from multiple sides—but thankfully still afloat. This week’s cover image is about one event—Halloween in Lahaina—that we think exemplifies the follies of the Tavares Administration, and County government in general. A popular, lucrative party began to erode for a variety of reasons. Businesses were hurting, visitors were being turned away. It was a moment when leadership was needed, to build bridges, broker compromise and balance economic, cultural and public safety concerns. Instead, we got a familiar response that has been the hallmark of the Tavares years: excuses rather than solutions, fingerpointing rather than problem-solving. Don’t take our word for it—ask the business owners and community groups that have tried to work with the County to get the event back on track and have mostly been stonewalled. Of course, Halloween is merely one example; there are many others. But we’ve said all that, and had our papers confiscated from a public building by County employees in the process. This isn’t about looking back; it’s about moving forward. Ironically, Tavares’s challenger is himself a former Mayor and longtime County employee. So much for radical change. But we believe Maui Nui was better off under Alan Arakawa, and we hope that after four years on the sidelines he’s learned some things, both from his own mistakes (and there were a few) and those of his successor. We’re under no illusions that Arakawa will wave a magic wand and make our problems disappear, and we’re quite certain that if he’s elected we’ll have cause to criticize his decisions. But as we push against the headwind of an uncertain future—and as our island tries to revive and diversify its economy, d protect its environment and secure its food and energy future—we know one thing: it’s time to chart a new course.

ix of the nine Council seats are contested this year—with only Kahului’s Joe Pontanilla, Upcountry’s Gladys Baisa and Molokai’s Danny Mateo running unopposed—which means there’s plenty of opportunity for the balance of power to shift. And balance is what we tried to keep in mind—in terms of both style and ideology—when weighing which candidates to endorse. In West Maui, we like Elle Cochran for her environmental advocacy and the fact that she’s backed by popular termed-out incumbent Jo Anne Johnson, who we feel has done good things for her district and Maui as a whole. We hope Cochran can rise to the challenge and enjoy a similar run of success. Cochran’s opponent, Alan Fukuyama, has run for this seat before, but we’ve yet to see or hear anything from him to sway us in his direction. The Makawao-Haiku-Paia race pits youth against experience, in the form of Kai Nishiki and Mike White, respectively. We appreciate White’s knowledge of and reasoned approach to the issues, and as a former state legislator we believe he has the ability to work within the system to get things done. His background in the visitor industry is a double-edged sword: we’re intrigued by the possibilities of a Councilmember with extensive knowledge of one of our island’s most important economic pillars, but we wonder if his divided loyalties will make him less able to serve his constituents. Nishiki is the youngest Council candidate and has never held elected office, but, as the daughter of Councilmember Wayne Nishiki, has been involved in politics for most of her adult life and frequently attends and testifies at Council meetings. Like Cochran, we believe Nishiki has the potential to grow into the office. This is a tough choice—in a good way. We like both candidates, but we’re going with Nishiki because we believe she brings a sensibility and perspective that’s less represented on the Council. We don’t agree with every decision Mike Victorino has made. In fact, we’ve frequently used him as an example of a Councilmember who fails to ask tough questions or take the long view when it comes to development proposals. But his opp opponent for the Wailuku-Waihee-Waikapu sea Lisa Gapero, makes this an easy call. seat, Fr From her combative demeanor to her “ “government is the problem” platitudes to her evasive answers to direct questions, G Gapero strikes us as not merely a poor ch choice, but a potentially dangerous one. The East Maui and Lanai races both feature form Councilmembers trying to reclaim former thei old jobs. In East Maui, Bob Carroll is their challenging incumbent Bill Medeiros, who

T

MauiTime endorses orses s

S

won the seat in 2006 when term limits forced Carroll out. We’re disappointed that a more progressive candidate didn’t step forward to run for this seat and feel Carroll and Medeiros have done little to differentiate themselves. Hokama is also returning after a term-limit induced hiatus, and faces challenger Matt Mano. Hokama’s record on the Council wasn’t perfect, but he came down on the right side of some important issues. That, coupled with his experience, gives him an edge over Mano. No race was more discussed during our editorial deliberations than the South Maui contest between incumbent Wayne Nishiki and challenger Don Couch. In 2008 we endorsed Nishiki because of his independence and willingness to ask tough questions. We still see those qualities in him. Yet the fact remains: two years ago, Nishiki walked into our office and lied to us. He told us he hadn’t taken any money from developers, yet soon after the election, we broke the story that he had, in fact, accepted a $100,000 personal loan from developer Everett Dowling. Since then, Nishiki has tried to bury the issue, choosing to seal the results of a Board of Ethics investigation and dodging questionss about how he secured the loan and how w much, exactly, he still owes. It remains an issue, whether or not Nishiki wants to admit it—one that speaks to his character, his truthfulness and his ofttouted commitment to transparency. We didn’t come to this decision lightly, but after two years of ducking (most recently pulling out of our live debate at the last minute), we simply cannot give Nishiki another pass. As for Couch, we’re supporting him, with the caveat that we will be watching very closely to make sure he is the balanced, environmentally conscious public servant he’s promised to be. Actions speak louder than words and—should he win—the votes Couch casts as a member of the Council and the questions he asks (or doesn’t ask) on the floor will be the gauge by which we judge him.

GENERAL ELECTION ENDORSEMENTS

★STATE LEGISLATURE★

O

f the seven Maui seats up for grabs this year, four feature candidates we can support. We’ll begin with those. During his time in the legislature, District 4 Sen. Shan Tsutsui has shown an ability to get things done without ut compromising his core principles (no no easy feat in the deal-cutting sausage factory that is the state Capitol). His dustup with Gov. Lingle over the proposed Puunene jail was a good example—he wasn’t afraid to go toe-tootoe with her, but also tried to find common ground. His opponent, Eric Seibert, has distinguished himself by sign-waving on top of his van and little else. In the state House, we’re backing three Democratic incumbents, with varying degrees of enthusiasm. District 9 Rep. Gil Keith-Agaran served almost a full term after being appointed to replace the late Bob Nakasone, and by all accounts has established himself as a popular and effective legislator. District 13 Rep. Mele Carroll remains popular among her far-flung, often overlooked East Maui, Lanai and Molokai constituents, particularly on agricultural and Native Hawaiian issues. District 11 Rep. Joe Bertram, as we’ve noted, has made some head-scratching blunders, particularly in his personal life, but has also taken bold stands on hot-button issues like gay rights and Hawaii’s voter-approved medical marijuana law. KeithAgaran, Carroll and Bertram are opposed by GOP candidates Jeff Hoylman, Meiling Akuna and George Fontaine. All repeat the smallgovernment mantra so popular among the Tea Party crowd, with Fonatine, a former MPD captain, adding a law and order angle. The remaining three Democratic incumbents are District 8 Rep. Joe Souki, District 10 Rep. Angus McKelvey and District 12 Rep. Kyle Yamashita. We’ve made our distaste for Souki and Yamashia, two old-guard legislators who take most of their campaign cash from Oahu and Mainland interests, known. We tepidly endorsed McKelvey in 2008, but have been disappointed to see him fall more and more in lockstep with his party’s good old boy base and come down on the wrong side of a number of issues, including civil union bill HB444, which he voted against. Souki, Yamashita and McKelvey are opposed by Dean Schmucker, Laurie Rinaldi and Ramon Madden, another collection of Tea Party favorites. It’s worth noting here that we don’t dismiss the Tea Party’s central thesis: there is indeed waste and corruption in government. But we doubt whether this movement— which has been co-opted, especially at the national level, by the same Republican Party machine that drove our country into the ditch—offers any real solutions.

en. Dan Inouye, the longestserving member of the U.S. Senate, and District 2 Rep. Mazie Hirono each face an eclectic collection of challengers, none of whom have shown the acumen or qualifications to deserve consideration. Both Inouye and Hirono have spent years in Washington, and carry the baggage that entails. But both have also displayed a commitment to their constituents and have avoided big scandals or major missteps—something that sets them apart from many of their colleagues on both sides of the aisle.

e backed Neil Abercrombie and Brian Schatz in the primary, and nothing has changed. Well, one thing has—their opponents are now Lt. Gov. James “Duke” Aiona and former state Rep. Lynn Finnegan. From the wornon-his-sleeve religious views that, despite his assurances to the contrary, we believe would guide much of Aiona’s decisionmaking to his ties to the failures of the Lingle Administration, we can think of many reasons why the election of Duke Aiona would be bad for Hawaii. And Finnegan—a rising star in the state GOP who parrots most of Aiona’s social and fiscal positions—does nothing to buoy the ticket. As with every race, we’re not sold on Abercrombie/Schatz as any kind of savior, and we have reservations about their ability to act as a check on the Democratic-controlled legislature, but we think they’re the clear choice here.

mends the Hawaii Constitution to change the Board of Education to a board appointed by the Governor, G with the advice and consent of the Senate, as provided by law. A

llows the legislature to determine whether excess funds should be used as tax refunds or tax credits or diverted to one or more funds to serve as temporary supplemental sources sou of funding for the state in times of an emergency, economic downturn or unforeseen reduction in revenue. We all like a tax refund, but, as we’ve seen in recent years, if we don’t stash money for a rainy day essential services will be cut. This change doesn’t mean tax refunds can never be given, only that the legislature will have a choice.

Cappucino and regular coffees are availablee as well. You won’t find any alcohol served here—it’s just too much for the program to maintain a liquor license—but you’re welcome to bring your own beer and wine (call ahead to see what’s on the menu for pairing purposes). After the meal, I chatted up Bill Carroll, a longtime diner at Class Act. “When they first opened we used to bring our own glasses and bread,â€? Carroll said. “But now look how far they have come.â€? Re-Fright Horror sequel more slick—and less scary—than the original Paranormal Activity 2

Damnit Rex, you left the toilet seat up again.

★★★★★

Rated R/91 min.

O

ne Halloween, I went to a haunted house Upcountry, over by the Eddie Tam gym, and got chased down a hallway by a guy waving a chainsaw. The chainsaw had no actual chain on it, but it still made that buzzing sound and the man in question was dressed like Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I made a run for it, even though I knew I was pretty safe. Horror movies are like that—the best ones fill you with anxiety and make you sink down in your seat with fright, despite the fact that there’s no actual danger. Paranormal Activity 2 is not a great horror movie—and has the same limitations as the original—but it does have its moments. The first film, you may recall, was supposed to be remade and not released

at all, but someone at Paramount Pictures believed in it enough to give it a trial run and word of mouth turned it into a blockbuster. The sequel feels like what the remake would have been, with a larger, fancier house as the setting, an ensemble cast and stylish photography. Both a prequel and a sequel, it shows us a happy family terrorized by an unseen presence that, not coincidentally, shows up whenever “Aunt Katie (Katie Featherston, returning from the original) pays a visit. Also back is Katie’s boyfriend Micah, the Kevin Federline of

Mahalo Maui County Voters

these movies, though he’s slightly less stupid this time. The new cast is appealing, though the movie is stolen by the family dog, which protects the baby of the house from the boogeyman. Yes, the baby is shamelessly put into peril, a concept many classic horror movies, from The Bad Seed to Poltergeist, exploit. The first-person camera work is utilized differently than in the original: because of an unexplained burglary that takes place (spoiler: Casper did it!), almost every room in the house has a camera installed and it

provides viewers with a slick, eerie landscape where spooky things can happen at any time. In fact, the biggest scare in the movie takes place in broad daylight, which is a huge accomplishment for any horror movie. There’s no music, and the long bouts of silence that get broken by a loud bump in the night are enough to scramble your nerves. Some of this works very well, but other touches, like a haunted pool cleaner (for real) make you wonder if they ran out of ideas early on. Portions of the film mimic everything from The Exorcist to The Blair Witch Project, with varying degrees of effectiveness. The cliffhanger ending sets up the inevitable Paranormal Activity 3, but I walked away feeling shaken, not stirred. The surprise of the original is gone and unless you’re an infant or a dog, this won’t give you sleepless nights. The first movie left me so scared, I slept on the couch. The sequel: I slept like a baby‌uh oh. ■To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1419f

NEW THIS WEEK BURIED - R - Thriller - Ryan Reynolds, a coffin, a lighter and a cell phone and that’s it. Seriously. 100 min.

JACKASS 3D - R - Comedy - Because all those testicle-staplings and Porta-Potty catapults were so dull in two dimensions. 105 min.

SAW 3D - R - Horror - Just when you thought they’d run out of creative (and uncreative) ways to kill and maim C-list actors, along came another dimension. 110 min.

LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS (3D) - PG - Animated - A group of talking owls go on a quest to save their kingdom, presumably stopping along the way to regurgitate rodent skulls. 100 min.

UH FOOTBALL VS. UTAH - The red-hot Warriors return to Aloha Stadium and look to keep their winning streak alive. See it on the big screen.

LIFE AS WE KNOW IT - PG13 - Romantic Comedy - Katherine Heigl is once again thrown unwittingly into parenthood (with some dude). How many times do we need to see this? At least twice, apparently. 115 min.

NOW SHOWING ALPHA AND OMEGA (3D) - PG - Animated - Two wolves on opposite ends of the pecking order join forces. A strange career-capper for the late Dennis Hopper, who is among the voice cast. 88 min. CASE 39 - R - Horror - A social worker investigating the case of a strange little girl discovers that “strange” doesn’t begin to describe it. 109 min.

MAO’S LAST DANCER - Unrated - A biopic based on the life of ballet dancer Lee Cunxin. See this after Saw 3D to cleanse your conscience. In English and Mandarin. 117 min. MY SOUL TO TAKE - R - Horror - A teenager does very bad things while he sleeps. Less dirty—and more gory—than it sounds. Wes Craven directs. 107 min.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 - R - See this week’s Film Critique. 91 min. RED - PG13 - Bruce Willis helms yet another old folks shoot-’em-up vehicle, with Helen Mirren and Morgan Freeman along for the ride. 111 min. SECRETARIAT - PG - Drama - The life and glories of the famed racehorse are dramatized, with Celine Dion in the title role. 123 min. THE SOCIAL NETWORK - PG13 - Drama - Hey you know that little Web site called Facebook all the kids (and their parents, aunts and great-uncles) are talking about? Here’s the (alleged) story of how it was born. 133 min. THE TOWN - R - Drama - Ben Affleck directs and stars and somehow doesn’t wear out his welcome in this Boston-set cops and robbers tale. 123 min. YOU AGAIN - PG - Comedy - A group of multigenerational women (including, inevitably, Betty White) spar over men and other life-and-death matters. 105 min.

CATFISH - PG13 - Documentary? - A “reality thriller” about the strange twists that unfold after a guy and a girl hook up on Facebook. 94 min. EASY A - PG13 - Comedy - The Scarlet Letter, only in a suburban high school. Just the way Nathaniel Hawthorne intended. 92 min. HEREAFTER - PG13 - The latest from director Clint Eastwood features a tsunami destroying Front Street. And here we thought that was the Mayor’s job. 123 min.

FINISH LINES F

or 15 years running (and biking and swimming), Makena has played host to the XTERRA World Championships—the culminating triathlon of over 100 qualifying races from across the globe. “They’re uber-athletes,â€? I overheard someone say, and indeed there’s no better deďŹ nition. So it goes without saying that these uber-athletes are deďŹ nition embodied—not a superuous ounce, not a muscle misplaced or without perfect tone. Tackling what’s considered one of the most grueling courses in the circuit, they compete for myriad reasons, but the grand prize is pride (oh, and a $20,000 check).

One mile in the water, 20 miles pedaling Haleakala’s tattered skirt and seven more miles on foot. It’s as if all 594 competitors are muscling an immovable slab through South Maui’s badlands, nature herself pushing back with a smirk. From every angle the athletes are oppressed—the trudge of loose topsoil, auburned by ranching and a cruel sun; spiked ďŹ elds of keawe and a‘a; the sink of sand; themselves. On the course, the verve is palpable as sweat-drenched competitors intrepidly dance the terrifying trail. Tears and snot streaming, stained black with dirt, it’s virile yet androgynous—every eck of focus poured into pushing further, and then further still. But when that ďŹ rst man crosses the ďŹ nish line, into the bulb of cheering tumult and hungry press, every blockade seems to crumble and the wave of its dispersing energy hits with tidal force. I wasn’t prepared for it last year, when Spain’s Eneko Llanos took the 2009 title, and I found myself a mere foot from his labored breath and impassioned ďŹ st pumps. And I remained unprepared this year, when South Africa’s Conrad Stoltz made history by being the ďŹ rst-ever fourtime champion. Again, there I was, face to face with a champion in the

moment of his triumph. Stoltz was a man on a mission from the onset, climbing out of the surf just 20 seconds behind the swim leader Seth Wealing. But biking seems his forte, as by the ďŹ rst press stop—at the course’s four-mile position at “Heartbreak Hillâ€?—he had already earned nearly a minute split, though Dan Hugo was hot on his heels. However, by the 10.5-mile position at the hairpin called “Crossroads,â€? Stoltz was far and away alone, well establishing what would be a more than ďŹ ve-minute lead. At the 16-mile turn at the rusty “Oil Tankâ€?—though with almost 11 miles to go—his imminent win seemed solidiďŹ ed. Adding to the din of XTERRA TV helicopters overhead and dirt bikes keeping pace in pursuit, our press vans—full of photographers and journalists shouting in foreign tongues and tones—had to make special stops just to hang out the window and glimpse Stoltz galloping by, a red and white whiz. Clearly, it was Stoltz’s day and he carpe’d it effortlessly. At “Spooky Forest,â€? our last stop at the South end of Big Beach, Stoltz was so far ahead we had only enough time to see him alone, before piling in the vans and hurrying to the ďŹ nish line. As he pressed up the last concrete wind of the manicured grounds of the hotel formerly known as the Prince, the announcers explained Stoltz had dedicated this race to his father, who’d recently been re-diagnosed with cancer. The murmur of the crowd effused the consensus, “Ah, no wonder he was such a machine.â€? Afterward, the press prodded about his father’s diagnosis. I, too, couldn’t help myself, as XTERRA ’09 was a week to the day before my own leukemia diagnosis—my symptoms then becoming undeniable, alongside the athletes I left my fair share of blood on the course—and my article en homage to Hunter S. Thompson was the last I’d write before a protracted hospital hiatus.

“I’d considered dropping out early in the season,â€? Stoltz told me, adding that he was jetting back to South Africa the very next day. “But my family would want me to be here.â€? So he was. And he won. The ofďŹ cial clock struck 2:31:07 and his exuberance eclipsed the sun. But in the minutes afterward, in the settling char of burning cells, there fell something muted over his countenance, like a sharply cut prism caught in half-light, no refractions cast. Sports psychology is beyond me—I can’t so much as make it up a ight of stairs without fearing collapse. So the roller coaster of emotion and expectation at the end of a race like that, I will likely never know. But the course; the aftermath; the champion. All reminded me that in the roil of life, with even the greatest crests, there are inevitable descents and ever more hills. And being a warrior doesn’t end at the ďŹ nish line, it crystallizes.

P.S. Obviously I had a lot of fun following Conrad Stoltz’s triumph, and you can follow him too, on Twitter, @ConradStoltz. Also, the ATVs, dirt bikes and helicopters all carry XTERRA TV crewmen. Check out their 2010 highlight reel at xterraplanet.com/ television. You may notice the majority of the soundtrack is by none other than Maui duo, Moth. â–

Horoscopes

sign.language.astrology@gmail.com SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) When you were younger, you played games to test your own strength, much like the way baby animals playfully enact versions of the activities they’ll require for survival and success later in life, like hunting, chasing, and fighting. At some point, though, part of becoming a mature, compassionate and conscious Scorpio is to stop exercising your power just because you can, but instead learn how to utilize it for a noble (or selfish but harmless) purpose. That’s lesson one, anyway. Seeing as how you should have mostly mastered that, this week is, of course, all about lesson two: figuring out when not to use your advantages, and let things play out as if you were a mere mortal like the rest of us.

QUIZunderstood answers 1. Lua-o-Milu

SIGN

AGE LANGU

2. Glen Grant; “ghost” (or literally, “thing that changes”) 3. A shark

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC.21) If Sagittarians were given a superpower of their choice, but only had a second to pick, nearly every one of you would select some form of transportive ability, like flight or teleportation. Leos might choose invulnerability, Pisces telepathy, or Geminis invisibility, but your first instinct would be to acquire something that would help you get around faster, with more ease and freedom. That says something about you. Luckily, you don’t really need a paranormal ability to achieve that general aim; it might just mean a subtle restructuring of your schedule, or your priorities. This week, see what you can do about that.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) The whole “with great power comes great responsibility” thing is a concept you only partially buy into. “It’s not my job,” carries some weight with you, too. However, although you needn’t act every time you see an opportunity, there are times when inaction is quite simply the wrong thing to do—namely when an innocent (especially a child or an animal) is harmed by your unwillingness to step up. As long as doing so doesn’t put you in any serious danger, you should consider it your calling to never shirk this responsibility, at least this week (if not every week). If you don’t step up, it’s depressingly likely that no one will.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) In How to Train Your Dragon, the main character discovers that nearly everything his elders taught him about dragons was wrong. Even though this received wisdom had spanned generations, he was willing to disregard it long enough to discover its implicit misconceptions. You, of course, are always willing to question what you’ve been told, and should continue to investigate matters thoroughly for yourself—no matter how much such scrutiny is discouraged. Since such dissuasion is likely to be laid on thick this week, you’ll need to reaffirm and redouble your determination to ignore it, and press on anyway.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) In response to the many suicides of bullied gay youth, one of my heroes, Dan Savage, started a project to speak to teens who might be full of despair (youTube.com/itgetsbetterproject), essentially delivering the simple (and truthful) message, “it gets better.” Such mentorship and community-fostering is admirable to me. Make extending kindness, guidance, and understanding to those who need it most your goal this week. The coolest part about such an activity is that you won’t just be helping others; you’re likely to feel more focused, directed, and understood than you were before you began, too.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) “Never give up on your dreams!” is the counsel of people who’ve just achieved theirs. While you can’t really go wrong with that message, I’m usually much more curious about the setbacks (or supposed setbacks) they experienced along the way, and how they managed to endure them and persist in spite of them. That would actually be more inspiring to me than the ultimate realization of their goals. Since you yourself have overcome numerous obstacles as you’ve proceeded down the path, please be kind enough to share your hard-won experience with those you see struggling similarly. Help them on their way; they’re very likely to return the favor, down the line, should you need it.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) It’s one thing to be generous—and you should strive to continue to embody this admirable trait—and quite another thing, however, to be taken advantage of. Unfortunately, some people aren’t especially good at being aware of or respecting sensible boundaries when accepting someone’s generosity. It’s for these people they invented the saying, “Give them an inch, they’ll take a mile.” Don’t let them spoil your bighearted disposition for the rest of us, though. Don’t allow them to make you upset. When they cross a line, gently but firmly let them know; then carry on as before. If they need to be cut off, cut them off—just don’t cut everyone off.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Sometimes change only happens when people feel they truly have no other choice. Even though we know we’ll probably run out of oil and gas in our lifetimes, few people are conservative in their gas usage; only if petroleum prices skyrocket will most people seriously consider carpooling, bicycling, or public transportation. I think we all know some stuff we could and should change, yet we’re mostly too selfish, lazy, or stubborn to actually do it. I’m hoping you Geminis—more open-minded than most—will be more willing to embrace necessary changes before they’re forced on you (by which time it may actually be too late).

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) As much as we want to make those we love feel safe, that’s not always possible. The simple truth is that, while there are some things you can protect them from, there are many things you can’t, and pretending you can would be perpetrating an illusion. Lying to someone, even with the best and most noble intentions, rarely makes them feel safe—in fact, it’s likely to undermine your more admirable and effective efforts. Continue your efforts to protect those you love—but do so without dishonesty. If something is truly out of your hands, admit it.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Despite your love of luxury, most Leos deal with poverty pretty well. Unlike your sensual Taurean cousins, who get frustrated when things aren’t top-quality, Leos really only need a few special things in their lives; the rest can be rather plain, cheap, or ordinary. This ability to make do with less will serve you well this week and in the coming months, but make sure you don’t deprive yourself completely. Selectively pamper yourself here and there, without breaking the bank. Indulging yourself in one or two vital ways is the key to being happy with everything else.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) What you’re up to now is a little like arbitrarily deciding to go through a whole day wearing oven mitts. “Other people are too used to relying on me using my fingers, so let’s see how they fare when I can’t use them!” Besides being exceptionally silly, it’s also a poor way of getting what you actually want: better boundaries and consequently fewer people taking advantage of you or your talents. Take off the oven mitts. They’re just going to make you look petty and ridiculous. Instead, practice figuring out just where your boundaries lie, and how to (at least in the future) effectively enforce them.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) “I’m sorry.” Two simple words, that, when you mean them, can indicate (and change) so much. Unfortunately, simple apologies are frequently ineffective because of how often people deliver them insincerely or arbitrarily. Those who’ve been wronged are reluctant to actually accept them without some more undeniable demonstration of remorse. Luckily for you, such grand gestures won’t be necessary right now, so you can cancel the skywriting and dozens of roses. Ironically, they’d actually make you look disingenuous. A heartfelt, look-you-in-the-eye-and-mean-it apology will do the trick—so give them exactly that.
