Coconut Wireless When Republicans Attack Republicans e’ve had a Republican Governor for the last eight years, so it’s easy, and understandable, for outsiders to conclude that the party has some clout. It doesn’t. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more fragmented, marginalized and impotent group. November 2 was a good day for Republicans nationwide, but the conservative wave fizzled into foam before it reached the Aloha State. Hawaii elected a Democratic Governor and reduced the number of Republicans in the state Senate from two to one. The GOP did gain a seat in the House— bringing its meager caucus to eight. Whatever your political persuasion, this is bad news. We have a de facto one-party system and the ruling party has grown predictably corrupt and complacent, led by power-drunk good-old-boys unchecked by meaningful opposition. So where’s the outrage? Enter Eric Ryan, a right-wing activist who fired off a letter two days after the election, calling for the heads of state GOP bosses. “Two days ago, the rest of the country turned red while Hawaii became even more blue,” Ryan wrote, addressing his remarks to chair Jonah Ka‘auwai, vice chair and failed lieutenant gubernatorial candidate Lynn Finnegan and Gov. Lingle, among others. “In light of these massive losses, missed opportunities and misspent resources, you should be ashamed of yourselves.” Ryan went on to accuse party brass of taking their eye off the ball by focusing on civil unions instead of the economy, of “engaging in a persistent and reprehensible campaign of lies” to secure Finnegan the nomination and of “blowing 99 [percent] of our party’s resources on Aiona’s and Djou’s quests for glory.” “Please do the right thing and tender your resignations, place the past party

chairman in charge as an interim leader, support a full, independent audit of the party and its finances, and help to ensure repayment of improperly diverted funds,” concluded Ryan, adding, “this would be righteous,” a reference to the Scripturelittered pro-Aiona e-mail Ka‘auwai sent to church groups before the primary. Of course, anyone can survey the wreckage and point fingers. But Ryan made similar, if more measured, comments last year when Ka‘auwai, Finnegan and others were tapped as the party’s new, “fresh-faced” leaders. “Not one of these officers has ever run a campaign, most have never been on a campaign,” he told the AP at the time. Now they have, and the results speak for themselves.

Most of Sime Darby’s plantations are in Malaysia and Indonesia, and the company—which raked in more than $560 million in profit last fiscal year— has been blasted by environmental groups for causing massive deforestation. The question is simple, even if the answer isn’t: Instead of switching from one imported fuel to another, why not focus on renewables like solar, wind and wave generation and locally grown biofuels? He told Toronto’s Globe and Mail in October that he still “performs” physically “without Viagra,” in at least one role a month opposite much younger women. His wife and adult daughter learned only two years ago, by accident, of his late-onset career (which began at age 60 when a filmmaker hired him for his “pervert’s face”). LOVE ME GENDER In Afghanistan, as in many less-developed countries, boy babies are much preferred to girls for economic reasons and social status, but some thus-unlucky Afghan parents have developed a workaround for “excess” girls: simply designate one a boy. All references to her are male, and she dresses as a boy, plays “boy” games and does “boy” chores, at least until puberty, when many parents of the “bocha posh” convert her back. In some tribal areas, according to a September New York Times dispatch, superstition holds that creation of a bocha posh even enhances prospects of the next child being a boy.

CASTE ASIDE Although India has forbidden discrimination against lower-caste “Dalits” (so-called “untouchables”), rampant oppression still exists, especially in rural areas. In October, police were investigating reports that a higher-caste woman had disowned her dog after it had been touched by an “untouchable” woman. A village council in the Morena district of Madhya Pradesh state had reportedly awarded the higher-caste woman the equivalent of $340 compensation after she witnessed the dog being given food scraps by the Dalit woman.

Is Atheism Good For You? NEW RESEARCH IS CHALLENGING THE NOTION THAT RELIGION IS A PREREQUISITE BY NATHAN SCHNEIDER FOR HEALTH AND HAPPINESS

T

his fall, during one of the gubernatorial debates between Mufi Hannemann and Neil Abercrombie, Hannemann (a Mormon) was asked what role religion would play in his administration. “I respect the right of everyone to adhere to a higher being, to respect the power of prayer and what faith can bring for us,” the former Honolulu Mayor replied. “I happen to be what I am, but by the same token I also respect your right to belong to your religion and appeal to a higher deity, whatever that situation may be.” It seems like an inclusive answer, but read it again. In expressing his tolerance, there’s one group Hannemann doesn’t mention: atheists. He’s certainly not alone. Though atheism has gained acceptance over the years (we’re not burning heretics at the stake, at least) it’s still widely assumed that faith is the best, perhaps only, path to a healthy life and a just society. It’s an assumption, however, that’s being challenged, and the result could be a bold new way of looking at belief—and non-belief.

eligion can be good for more than the soul, a large number of studies claim. Over the past decade, academic research on religiosity has exploded, and with it has come a raft of publications suggesting that spiritual beliefs and practices can add years to life, lower blood pressure or keep at-risk kids on the straight and narrow. As sociologists, psychologists and physicians turn their attention to measuring the effects of religion, often fueled by grant money from private foundations, the results have percolated swiftly through weekend sermons and the mainstream media. Being non-religious, one might conclude, looks more and more like a danger to your health. But as the academic interest in religion has mounted, some scholars have begun to call this picture into question. What’s missing, they believe, is a comparable examination into the lives of non-religious people and even the potential benefits of non-belief. Galvanized by a desire to even the scales, these researchers have been organizing academic centers to study the “irreligious,” conducting major surveys and comparing their findings. They’ve already found that convinced atheists appear just as well equipped to cope with hardship as convinced believers, and that some of the

world’s healthiest societies have the lowest levels of piety. “There now seems to be a critical mass of people studying secularity,” says Phil Zuckerman, a sociologist at Pitzer College in Claremont, California, “and I think that is a big new development.” Philosophical reflection about non-belief has been common since Nietzsche declared the death of God more than a century ago, but scientific research on it has been rare. Though still preliminary, the new work has already begun shining new light on the lives of the nonreligious. They are a difficult-to-define minority in the United States, where the vast majority identify themselves as religious in some sense. But this research is leading to a more sophisticated understanding of how people believe—and of how the lines between religion and irreligion are less certain than we realize.

t wasn’t until the late 1980s that social scientists and medical researchers began to study religious belief and its effects quantitatively. For a long time, the spiritual had generally been assumed to be an inappropriate subject for empirical investigation. But a surge of academic interest in religion, together with an influx of money, changed that. The Pennsylvania-based John Templeton Foundation, whose eponymous founder longed to see science and spirituality brought closer together, helped turn the field into an academic growth industry, sprouting research centers and conferences around the world. Last year alone, it gave away more than $70 million. In the social sciences, Templeton joined older foundations with an interest in religion, such as the Lilly Endowment and the Pew Charitable Trusts. Today, these foundations each fund ambitious

sociological surveys devoted to better understanding the religious makeup of the United States. The study of religion now sits comfortably in some surprising corners of the academic and scientific establishment: while in 1992 only five American medical schools offered courses related to religion, 101 did by 2005. But in all this enthusiasm, one group has been largely ignored. “People who truly have no religion are not very well understood,” says David Yamane of Wake Forest University, editor of the journal Sociology of Religion. The few studies that did treat nonbelief seriously offered tantalizing hints that to look only at religiosity was to miss an important part of the spectrum of human belief. One study conducted in 1985 by German psychologist Franz Buggle and his colleagues suggests that neither religion nor irreligion has a monopoly on improving people’s mental health. Among 174 people surveyed, it found that two groups enjoyed the best scores on a scale of depression: the most pious Christians and the convinced atheists. Those in the middle, the lukewarm

at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey, decided to examine atheists at risk for depression more closely. Hwang’s interviews with atheists suffering from spinal cord injuries revealed how becoming debilitated strengthened their convictions, and their convictions strengthened them. “It doesn’t matter so much what a person believes in,” she says, “but how consistent and cohesive their worldview is.” Irreligion is an increasingly important part of the religious landscape in the United States. The American Religious Identification Survey made headlines in 2001 when it reported that the number of people with no religious affiliation had increased sharply since 1990, from 8.2 to 14.1 percent. The latest report, released last month, put the number at 15 percent. It also underscored why identifying these so-called “nones” isn’t easy. While only 1.6 percent of respondents declared themselves agnostic or atheist outright, more than 12 percent said they don’t believe in God or aren’t sure. Further, fully 27 percent don’t expect to have a religious funeral. The growth documented by the survey has generated fresh interest in non-belief. In 2005, the survey’s directors, sociologists Barry Kosmin and Ariela Keysar, founded an Institute for the Study of Secularism in Society and Culture at Trinity College in Connecticut, the first of its kind in this country. The institute sponsors original research and public events, and provides curriculum materials for college courses about the history and development of secularism. In recent months, two new organizations have appeared online, Joseph Hammer’s Center for Atheist Research and Lois Lee’s Non-religion and Secularity Research Network. Hammer, a psychology graduate student at the University of Missouri, and Lee, a sociology graduate student at Cambridge University, have eagerly reached out to others who share their interests.

bibliographies, discussion forums for scholars in the field and surveys in which visitors can take part. One of the banner carriers for the new research is Zuckerman, the Pitzer College sociologist. His new book, Society without God, offers a revealing portrait of irreligion in Denmark and Sweden, countries where paltry levels of church attendance coincide with economic prosperity, low crime and abounding quality of life. These nations challenge the claim that piety is a prerequisite for a healthy society, but Zuckerman also takes care not to go too far in the other direction. “People think I’m arguing that secularity causes good social outcomes, and that’s not necessarily the case,� he says. Careful study of secular life, he adds, “should be done because people are still calling it unnatural, odd. No—it’s part of the human condition, always has been, and always will be.�

ike Zuckerman, many of the scholars focusing on the nonreligious are motivated by more than mere academic curiosity. Rather, they want to make non-belief a respectable option in a society where it often raises distrust. “There is a fine line between people who study secularity and people who advocate secularity,� Zuckerman says, “but the same holds true for people who study religion.� One of the most powerful critics of the new science of religion is Columbia University psychiatrist Richard Sloan, who surveyed hundreds of published studies on the benefits of religion and found many of them rife with methodological sloppiness. In his 2006 book, Blind Faith: The Unholy Alliance of Religion and Medicine, he argued that researchers, who were often personally religious, appeared to be seeing what they wanted to see, not what the evidence showed. Most of those engaged in the work on secularity are agnostics or atheists; some cite the influence of “New Atheist� polemicists

like Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, who have spurred non-believers to be more strident. But the researchers say they’re eager not to replicate the errors of wishful thinking that Sloan pointed out in the work on religion. The new institute at Trinity College, for instance, is funded largely by Switzerland’s Posen Foundation, an organization devoted to promoting secular culture and education. But Barry Kosmin, the institute’s director, insists, “We’re not an advocacy organization. What we want to do is be objective.� Some do encounter resistance among their peers for doing this kind of work. Joseph Hammer says he is careful about whom he discusses his research with. David Wulff of Wheaton College in Norton, a veteran psychologist who wants to make his discipline more attentive to non-belief, has had difficulties as well. “My colleagues in the psychology of religion are not interested,� he says. “And that’s partly because most of them are themselves religious.� But soon, more scholars of religion

may be forced to pay attention. Wulff has been developing survey tools that will help psychologists look beyond binary oppositions like religiosity and secularity, or belief and unbelief. Phil Zuckerman’s study in Scandinavia, in fact, suggests that these distinctions aren’t as clear as one might expect. His interviews show the extent to which, even in the absence of traditional supernatural beliefs, the subjects’ religious heritage provides them with moral guideposts and cultural habits. Not believing in God doesn’t stop most Danes and Swedes from considering themselves Christians. Religions, we are beginning to learn, can be better understood by paying attention to what irreligion looks like. Probe irreligion, and you encounter not only new insights about how it works in people’s lives, but also echoes of the very religions it defines itself against. â–

ahaina Fish Company has officially changed its name, inserting the words “Prime Rib.� They made the switch because they started serving a new item six months ago. Any guesses what it is? “The restaurant is re-inventing itself again, reviving old favorites and reinterpreting the classics,� says Chef Keith Salvador of the delicious new beef cuts and other additions. The menu is fearlessly indulgent; each entree is a feast and there is an extensive list of options: lamb, pork chop with mango, fresh fish, pastas, soups and numerous sides. There are more than eight treatments to the prime rib alone, including king cuts with bone in, a Hawaiian-style blackened treatment, a stroganoff and pairings with seafood. These pink, plate-sized slabs of meat literally melt in your mouth, full of

juicy beef flavor and served with delectable creamed horseradish and English peas. “It’s the slow-roasting that makes it so good,� explains Salvador. The meat is seasoned with Hawaiian sea salt before being roasted for a full 24 hours, a process Salvador says “draws out the beef flavor and brings the protein to that fork-tender texture.� The experience is topped off with a loaded mashed potato, a decadent, creamy mash with caramelized onions blended through, giving it a satisfyingly deep flavor. Lahaina Prime Rib and Fish Company serves Angus beef throughout the menu: filet, New York, sirloin, even their burgers. And don’t worry seafood-lovers, they still serve fresh line-caught fish, with specials changing nightly. The monchong I had was Cajun-grilled, flaky and seared, and served with steamed garden veggies; it was a huge plate that was revisited at home with gusto. The seafood lau lau is award-winning, and comes in a beautiful presentation. The ahi katsu I loved so well has turned into a lunch rice bowl, not to be found on the dinner menu. aui, prepare to lick your fingers: America’s rib king, Dave Anderson, is bringing his beloved barbecue to Lahaina. Famous Dave’s will move into the 700 block on Front Street with 16,000 square feet dedicated to dishing pit-smoked ribs, chicken and brisket slathered in house-made sauces. Yes, it’s corporate barbecue, but Famous Dave’s has a twist: founder Anderson is a motivational speaker, an author and a philosopher of positive vibrations. I caught up with him recently to find out what makes this meat monarch tick.

I hear you’re a fan of Hawaiian barbecue. How are you planning to work local cuisine into your Maui menu?

Hawaii having its own barbecue traditions is all the more reason why we’ll feel right at home— because a great barbecue is really all about having family and friends over for an old-fashioned celebration, where all the food is homemade and the meats are seasoned and slowsmoked over smoldering coals. And whether you’re on the Mainland or in Hawaii, we believe folks everywhere love a good barbecue. When I heard that we were coming to Hawaii I was really excited, because I have this tasty Huli Huli style of barbecue sauce that is robust and a real mouthful of

hollers. We call our sauce Huli Buli, and it’s generously slathered over charcoal chicken thighs. I have no doubt this is going to be everyone’s favorite. We’re also going to have traditional sticky rice [and] Spam, along with grilled pineapple. Your menu is huge. What should I order on my ďŹ rst visit?

The most popular thing on our menu is our All-American Barbeque Feast, served on a garbage can lid. [That’s] because it’s so huge [and] also to pay tribute to my humble upbringing. When I was first learning how to smoke ribs and I didn’t have a lot of money, I used to smoke them in an old garbage can. When the ribs were done, I would take the garbage lid off and turn it upside down and put my ribs in. The Feast comes with a full slab of our award-winning ribs, a country-roasted chicken, your choice of smoked chopped pork or smokey beef brisket, honeybuttered corn bread, corn on the cob, homemade creamy cole slaw, and the best tasting barbeque baked beans. Wow, that is a meal, though you may be surprised at how much us Hawaiians can eat. How has your barbecue style changed since those smokin’ garbage can days?

Our recipes are an old family secret. However, what I can share is that we do our barbeque the old-fashioned way, just like champion pitmasters used to do way down in the deep South. My dad, a Native American of the Great Choctaw Nation in Idabel, Oklahoma, grew up loving Southern foods. He always insisted that great barbeque was done low and slow over smoldering hardwoods and then slathered with a full-flavored, robust sauce. Will any of our local beef be appearing on the menu?

To start off with, we will be bringing our beef with us until we get into the swing of things. Right now, we’ve had our hands full just getting everything across the ocean and set up. Once we get settled in, we’ll see if we can buy locally. â–

hen I was a college kid back in the ’90s in Los Angeles, there was a swirl of activity in the independent hip-hop scene. With the revolutionary ’80s firmly on record, the next generation of up-andcoming hip-hop hopefuls was emerging all over the country with a new confidence— and a new sound. I think back fondly to those years, when I saw soon-to-be-big name groups like a pre-Fergie Black Eyed Peas and Jurassic 5 in small, dingy clubs. At the same time, further up the coast in the Bay Area, another independent hip-hop group was creating a big buzz. The Living Legends, like their peers in L.A., soon grew to fame—with a strictly “DIY� business approach. In the span of a decade-plus, the eight-man crew has collectively recorded over 100 albums and cultivated a die-hard grassroots following without ever signing to a record label, a fitting trajectory given their slogan and rallying cry: “control destiny.� Fortunately for Maui hip-hop fans, a couple of years ago a founding member of the Living Legends made the Valley Isle his permanent home. Cory Scoffern (aka The Grouch) is best known for his straightforward approach as a writer, producer and bona fide independent music hustler. (His stage name is credited to a crewmember he often butted heads with.) Despite what his pseudonym may suggest, The Grouch struck me as friendly and affable, and ironically he’s played an integral part in building the Living Legends’ positive brand, sound and image. Showing up for an interview at Market Fresh Bistro in Makawao looking healthy and relaxed in board shorts and slippers, Scoffern recalls falling in love with Maui at first sight when he came here on tour. “I remember getting to Hawaii and being like, ‘you know, all these hotels are cool, but take me to the waterfalls and the snorkeling, take me to all of the natural stuff’,� he says. “Ever since I hit Maui, I was like, ‘oh that’s the place’.� Soon after, all eight members returned to record an album (Classic, which reached number 38 on Billboard’s independent chart in 2005) in a big house on West Kuiaha in Haiku. Scoffern says the album has a “peaceful, Maui vibe—as much as our group of eight guys could get on together.� Between the grueling tours and festivals

that brought the Living Legends widespread fame, Scoffern and his wife would take breaks to find sanctuary on Maui. Eventually they brought a daughter into the world—a game-changing event—and they couldn’t think of a better place to raise her. “The longer we stayed on Maui, we were just feeling better, day after day,� Scoffern says. “Our daughter just loved it and we started meeting families and people who are raising their kids here, and we liked the natural way of life. The way that kids are just freer, the adults are friendlier. The whole ‘Auntie’ and ‘Uncle’ thing that we do out here makes it that much more like family.� Since beginning what he calls a “more responsible, more conscious lifestyle� as an Upcountry family man, Scoffern has

performed a few solo shows on-island and is now committed to bringing over his friends and collaborators—a veritable who’s-who of independent hip-hop. “I notice there’s a lack of a hip-hop scene on Maui, [but] I know there’s a lot of people here who love the message that the positive, independent hip-hop is putting out there right now,� says Scoffern. “I feel like I’m in a good position to help, because I know a lot of people who want to come to Hawaii who happen to be good artists.� True to his word, this Saturday night at Casanova he’s sharing the stage with Scarub, a Los Angeles native and founding member of the Living Legends who has a faster, more driving lyrical style. Runaway train thriller misses its connection Unstoppable

I

n the years since Speed, the Keanu Reeves bomb-on-a-bus thriller has been recycled in numerous uninspired knock-offs. There was Speed in an ice cream truck (Chill Factor) and Speed on an ocean liner (the infamous Speed 2: Cruise Control) and now we have Speed on a train. Unstoppable features two magnetic stars—Denzel Washington and Chris Pine—but the train out-acts them both and is the most compelling thing in the movie. The flimsy, seen-it-before plot (supposedly based on a true story) has an old-timer locomotive conductor (Washington) training a rookie (Pine) whose first day on the job is ho-hum, until a train with no brakes, no conductor and a container of explosives threatens to derail and obliterate a town. Our stubborn heroes, who initially hate each other, must learn to work together and are somehow the only men on the planet

qualified to save the day. If you’re here for the action, you’ll have a decent time, but the leads aren’t well matched and the script gives them little to do. Washington is too good for this movie and Pine, terrific as Kirk in the recent Star Trek prequel, is too green to hold his own with Denzel. Their scenes offer mild bickering and eventual respect—and that’s it. Rosario Dawson plays Washington’s onedge boss, but she’s stuck in a thankless role consisting of nothing but “we’ve got a problem!” plot exposition. Dawson, like her co-stars, deserves much better. Only near the very end do we get any sense of the speed of the train. Director Tony Scott once again films everything from shaky, overly stylized angles and it’s not until the actors leave the conductor’s compartment and climb around the train that we experience how fast it’s moving. And the exciting climax over-utilizes the star’s stunt doubles, who work harder during the latter part of the movie than either Washington or Pine. Scott gave us Top Gun and True Romance among many other solid-to-

I want to defend him, because I grew up on his stuff, but how can I, when he put two of the most charismatic actors alive in the same movie and only the ’splosions hold your interest? I’ve seen episodes of Thomas and the Magic Railroad that were edgier

From the time he was a young boy, tenor vocal/banjoist Michael Black’s popular musician parents, Patty and Kevin Black—whose Dublin home was a regular weekend hub for “hoolies” (i.e. kanikapila)—considered him a “precocious” talent. (Interesting tidbit: he left school at age 14 to work at the Guinness Brewery, but went on to study in London and later at UC Berkeley.) Joining Black is drop D-lovin’ lefty Jon Sanders, whose early work included ’80s London folk bands Hot Banana and Three Wise Fools. Sanders moved to Dingle, County Kerry in the ’90s and took up playing the bouzouki (a pear-shaped, longnecked Greek lute), and has since made a name for himself as the Bard of Bouzouki, the Duke of Uke. From South to West Maui, the pair will be performing and storytelling on two nights. At Mulligan’s on the Blue, treat your taste buds to the same Emerald Isle treats as your ears, by opting for the dinner package. And tickets to Black and Sanders’s West side show include light refreshments (plus free parking at the United Methodist Church). Reservations are required for the Mulligan’s show (874-1131) and are highly recommended for the limited-seating house concert in Lahaina (264-5190).

Artists Vincent Goudreau and Javier Martinez have a way of painting with their 16mm camera, creating films that are part National Geographic, part art house and entirely moving. Their latest work, Compositions in Departure—shot in China, Ghana and Mexico—explores “displacement and the idea of home as a metaphor for finding one’s place in the world.” The film follows three individuals, Ji Wang Juan, Alfred Kpebesaane and Altagracia Martinez, “one [who] has willingly departed from his home, one [who] faces an inability to leave, and the third… [who] wants to leave and is left virtually alone.” Goudreau and Martinez — both graduates of the California Institute of the Arts—took three and a half years to produce Compositions, wherein “textiles, migration and imperialism” serve “as analogies for patterns of human behavior.” This 35-minute film screens Friday at the Iao, preceded by live marimba music and followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers. Few mediums are as ephemeral and unforgiving as ice; sculptors of the frozen substance subject themselves to certain heartbreak (the key word, unfortunately, being break). The challenge of ice sculpting in cold weather is tough enough, but take that competition to the tropics and it’s like trying to create a sidewalk chalk mural in a monsoon or oil painting underwater. But if Hawaii’s only annual ice sculpting extravaganza is to be held anywhere, Maui’s only fully enclosed, air-conditioned shopping center seems like the best bet. Thus, Lahaina Cannery Mall will again host the International Ice Sculpting Exhibition and Competition, drawing artists from across the state and as far away as Japan. Wielding saws, picks, drills and chisels, sculptors will showcase their skills on Saturday during a freestyle exhibition, and on Sunday will engage in a timed contest for cash and prizes—transforming 300-pound blocks of ice into delicate masterpieces. henever the string section played, I was incorrigibly impassioned. Nana imitates me when she tells the story—going so far as to are her nostrils and furrow her brow (a look I haven’t yet managed to lose)— gripping her hands in her lap, back straight as a plank, bobbing like a talltopped buoy in a steady swell. I was three, maybe four years old, and it was my ďŹ rst time seeing a live orchestra. “I was so embarrassed,â€? she always says, her honesty afďŹ rmed by the little trill in her voice. “You’re supposed to be proper at those sort of things. We were right in the front row and everyone was watching you, laughing. You were so serious!â€? I couldn’t help it then, and I can hardly help it now. Rhythm and winds are all good and well, but there’s just something about the soaring sounds of chordophones (i.e. string instruments) that sweep me off my feet. Play me a mere snippet of Paganini and my heart’s a hot-air balloon. Embarrassmentaside,Nana’salways been my curator of all things arts and culture, and since I was a tot she’s toted me to Maui’s best venues, which then were but the old Puunene Playhouse, more holes than wood, the Iao Theater, verging on demolition, and (for said classical music introduction) folding chairs on the oor of the War Memorial Gymnasium. Our isle has since had a few decent upgrades—from the Maui Theatre to the MACC—and last Friday Nana treated me (“in returnâ€? for last month’s date to see Complexions ContemporaryBallet)totheLosAngeles Guitar Quartet at the Castle Theater. Because if there’s anything I love as much as a rosined bow on cat guts, it’s instrumental guitar. From the very ďŹ rst notes of Giacomo Rossini’sOverturetoIlBarbierediSiviglia, it was like trying to stie the deep tendon reex when the doctor taps your knee with that triangle hammer thing. Thankfully, the lady next to me was bobbing her head, too. “Does this make you want to get back to playing?â€? Nana whispered loudly after the foursome ďŹ nished Entr’acte in the ďŹ rst half. The troupe’s selections from George Bizet’s Carmen were indeed inspiring, but I shook my head with a ďŹ rm “no.â€? It’s hardly accurate to say “back to,â€? anyway; I may have an ear for music, but not the ďŹ ngers. In my pre-teens

I went so far as to seek out the very best six-string sensei, but not even Tom Conway could help my hands’ sorry state. The only thing I was much good at was trudging up the creaky Bounty steps to their upstairs classrooms (which, for legs worse off than my arms, is saying something). The quartet was wonderful, but their special guest Phillip Proctor stole the show during the second half. A comedic dramatist, Proctor did an hour-long reading based on El Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quixote de La Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, expertly set to music from the 17th century and earlier. (To give you an idea of the tone, the group began conceptualizing the show over dinner with Monty Python’s John Cleese, after the 2007 Santa Barbara Guitar Festival, with Cleese starring in the show’s premier last March.) Which all reminds me of another adventure with Nana: a painful stint wherein I was certain I wanted to be an actress. Ever-supportive Nana escorted me all the way to California so I could audition among thousands for one of 30 spots in UCLA’s theater program. I’m not quite sure who I was kidding. I’d never yet been in a play in my life, and needless to say did not get into UCLA. (I did, somehow, get into Santa Cruz’s theater program, and had I gone, I think I would have made a ďŹ ne Banana Slugâ€”ďŹ ve of them, after all, spurt from each of my wrists.) Fortunately—for the good of the world, as much as for me—I quickly learned that I am not a performer, but a patron. Perhaps even a patron prodigy. And still a straight-backed bobbing buoy of incorrigible enthusiasm. â–

This is a tough lesson for Sagittarians, who are used to being unencumbered.
