READER FEEDBACK LOVES SIGN LANGUAGE PLEASE don’t get rid of Caeriel Crestin! FREE ADVICE Hi Anthony. Welcome to Maui. Unfortunately I don’t mean this in the “Hi, glad you’re here, sense. I mean, “Welcome to Maui, I hope you can get used to these asinine nonsensical type exchanges (Coconut Wireless, July 21, 2011). This is how it is. You will sleep more peacefully. And have much better Karma on the rock if you learn how to roll with how it goes here. You WILL NOT change it. It does not change. As a matter of fact, it WILL only get worse if you fight it. It will dissipate if you roll with it. After 15 years on Maui, I have seen people do both. The ones who fight it will soon be gone; “blown off the rock as they say. It can be a strange trip down the “Rabbit’s Hole. My advice: step back and quietly observe what happens here for a long time and then, find a place here where you contribute to the whole and roll with the rest. And one more thing: don’t talk stink. In this upside-down reality here, it always seems to blow back on you. -Anonymous, via email
TOUCHY TEACHER Quit bashing public schools in your Mauitime rag (Quizunderstood, July 21, 2011). When you state that only six Maui public schools met No Child Left Behind guidelines, did you know that the bar for those requirements is raised each year, and by 2014 all students, in-
cluding my autistic son, must make 100 percent on the tests to “meet these guidelines? Your lame writer goes on to imply “humorously that a public school graduate is incapable of answering a basic math problem. Hawaii’s low rate of graduation is tied to our high expectations and standards for students.Your statements may sound smart to the uninformed, but they really reveal your paper’s stunning ignorance. By the way, charter schools can “suck even worse than the public ones... don’t believe the Waiting for Superman hype, which only works well when the school can pick its pupils. You just angered a teacher who has already suffered a pay cut so you don’t have to pay more taxes. Does it make you feel good to kick teachers in the proverbial crotch? -Anonymous, via email
ANOTHER COMPLAINT ABOUT COMPLAINING People get parking tickets (myself included) because–simply–they don’t abide by the postings. Rather than griping at law enforcement, take that same amount of time and approach the city/county to change the postings (Best of Maui, July 4, 2011). If everyone is getting tickets, then perhaps, the parking time allowance is not appropriate. On the other hand, the short amount of time allowed to park in some areas could be because SO many people are in need of parking and it’s a way for everyone to get a turn. Maybe you could use your time, ink and paper to inspire change rather than just complain about the problem. It’s so boring to only hear of the problem without any viable solution offered. Of course, if your articles are written simply for the pleasure of complaining, then just complain, there’s no need to drag others through the mud to make your point. It’s okay, complaining is legitimate. -Bonnie Moureau, via email

Coconut Wireless THE RETURN OF BILL WORTH This might just be because I’m a newspaper editor, but there’s something seriously, terrifyingly humbling that happens to a person when he or she reads about previous publications on Maui. I’m talking about the old Maui Sun, Mauian, Art to Onions, Maui Quarterly and Rainbow Islands. These were all tabloids and papers published on Maui a few decades ago, written and edited by people usually more talented than me, and they are all, each and every one of them, out of business. “Considering what they’re up against, it’s surprising Maui’s present crop of publishers have done as well as they have,” stated a May 1, 1986 Hawaii Business (which still exists) feature on the above publications. “But publishing is almost always a high-risk business-fortunes can be made in ink, but mostly fortunes are lost in trying, as Hawaii’s many former publishers can attest.” Ironically, one of the publications mentioned in the Hawaii Business article actually does still exist: The Lahaina News, though it’s very different today (now owned by West Virginia-based Ogden Publications, which also owns The Maui News, Maui Bulletin and Maui Weekly) than it was back in 1986. Then, the co-owner and editor was Bill Worth, who bought the paper in the 1980s after seeing it advertised in the now defunct Editor & Publisher magazine. “So, for just $20,000, they bought the Lahaina News,” the Hawaii Business article stated. “At the time, the small community paper had a light, feature-and-opinion format, was published twice a month, had a circulation of 4,000, and generated less than $20,000 a year in revenues. The Worths believed the Lahaina News had unfulfilled potential, but even they have been surprised at how much growth it’s undergone. With [Worth’s wife] Nancy heading up sales, and Bill the editorial, the Lahaina News today is a weekly news tabloid, with a 10,000, circulation, and revenues of $225,000 in 1985.” I mention all this because Worth, who pretty much turned the Lahaina News into the stable little community paper it is today has written a new book called House of the Sun: A Metaphysical Novel of Maui.According to a news release sent out by Worth, the book “tells the story of Keli`i, a young Maui boy who has special powers–and an indelible connection with Madame Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire.” It’s got an elderly kahuna named Joshua, a “tragic accident at sea,” “mystical spiritual practices,” a tourist chick named Aimee and a “renowned televangelist” named Jeremiah Justice. In 2012, Worth will be publishing a sequel called House of the Sun: Island of Death. Anyway, you can buy his newest book (and his The Hidden Life of Jesus Christ: A Memoir) at billworthbooks.com. And it’s probably

every one of you. “Maui County is asking that all residents please participate in a recent telephone survey being conducted for county and state governments,” stated a July 22 press release from Ryan Piros, Assistant Communications Director for the county, about a housing survey that started in late May and is apparently way behind schedule. p “Survey “Surv callers report experiencing

problems in getting Maui County residents to participate. Some of the identified problem areas as [sic] the island of Lanai, West Maui and North and East Maui, from Paia to Hana.” Come on, island of Lanai, get with it! Hey, Paia, Haiku and Hana, I’m looking at you! And what’s up with West and North Maui anyway? Think you’re better than the rest of us? Think you’ve got housing costs, conditions and issues all squared away? The good folks at SMS Research and Marketing Services, Inc., are just trying to do their jobs when they call you at home and interrupt your dinner or Call of Duty game. It’s not like they’re asking for your social security number or bank account numbers or your monthly mortgage payments (whoops, scratch that last one–SMS does want to know about your home loans). In fact, so few of you bothered to help out on this one that the mayor himself has gotten involved. “Please participate so that we know how best to serve the public,” Mayor Alan Arakawa says in the press release. How pathetic is that? Guy runs the whole county, with all of its myriad law enforcement, land development, infrastructure, health care and economic needs, and now he’s having to shame residents into helping out with a phone survey. I hope you’re all happy.
CONGRATULATIONS TO US At this week’s big award festivities in New Orleans, Louisiana, MauiTime took home one prestigious award from the Association of Alternative Newsmedia (it was, until this weekend, known as the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies), the trade association we’ve been part of since 2003. It’s Third Place for best special issue in 2010, which in this case was our 3D Best of Maui edition, which was put together by former Mauitime art director/current Seattle Met assistant art director Chris Skiles and illustrator Brad Parker. And in an added bonus, Justin “Scrappers” Morrison, our new art director, won a Second Place award for best cover design for work he did in 2010 for his former employer, The Portland Mercury. Believe me, we are all very proud of Scrappers, but not entirely surprised. If you happen to have a bit of free time, check out his website scrapperstown. com, which has links to some of the insanely cool art work he became rather famous for on the mainland. And he traded it all to come work for us, which is better than any award. Well, maybe not a Pulitzer, but it’s pretty close. ■

NEWS OF THE WEIRD BABY TALK In January, a baby was born to Canadians Kathy Witterick and David Stocker, but seven months later, they still have not revealed to family or friends whether little “Storm” is a boy or a girl. The couple are intending to raise Storm free of gender-specific cultural stereotypes (i.e., such things as domesticity, aggressiveness, preferences for arts or mathematics) because society tends to overvalue “boy” norms. On a larger scale, in Stockholm, according to a June Associated Press dispatch, the 33 Swedish preschoolers at the Egalia school socialize in daily environments scrubbed of all gender references. For example, boys and girls alike play with kitchen toys and building materials, and when playing “family,” parental roles are interchangeable. Critics say the children will be left unprepared for the “real” world.
WHO KNEW? “The streets of 47th Street are literally paved with gold,” said one of New York City’s gold wranglers, as he, down on all fours and manipulating tweezers, picked specks of gold, silver and jewels that had fallen off of clothing and jewelry racks as they were rolled from trucks into stores. The man told The New York Post in June that he had recently earned $819 in redemptions for six days’ prospecting.

OUTSOURCING CIRCLE IS NOW COMPLETE A Mumbai, India, company, Aegis Communications, announced in May that it will hire about 10,000 new employees to work in its call centers fielding customer service problems for U.S.-based companies. However, those jobs are not in India. Aegis will outsource those jobs to Americans, at $12 to $14 an hour, at nine call centers in the United States.
A loaded handgun fell from the pocket of a kindergarten student in Houston in April, firing a single bullet that slightly wounded two classmates and the “shooter.” And prosecutors in Grant County, Wis., filed first-degree sexual assault charges recently against a six-year-old boy, stemming from a game of “doctor” that authorities say he pressured a five-year-old girl into in 2010. And Lakewood, Colo., police, attempting to wrest control of a sharpened stick that a second-grade boy was using to threaten classmates and a teacher, gave him two shots of pepper spray. (The boy had just finished shouting to police, “Get away from me you f---ers.”)

LAST WEEK we called you for an emergency and you guys were there! I never got a chance to thank you for your aloha and your driving skills. My wife went into unexpected labor on the Westside and you guys knew the baby wasn’t going to wait until we got to the hospital. So you pulled over on the Pali and delivered my first baby right there on the shoulder. After telling us it was a girl, you wiped your brow, jumped into the ambulance we jammed to S.O.J.A (quietly) playing on the radio until we got to Maui Memorial. But when we got there, some braddah told you that you were “driving too fast.” What?! I wanted to tell him, “Hey, the flashing lights and sirens mean ‘Move it, cuz!’” But you stayed professional. You just smiled and apologized as you wheeled my wife and newborn into the emergency room. My baby and wife are alive and well, thanks to you. Mahalo! ■
PEOPLE DIFFERENT FROM US Self-described Las Vegas “performer” Staysha Randall took 3,200 different piercings in her body during the same sitting on June 7 to break the Guinness world record by 100 prickings. (Veteran Las Vegas piercer Bill “Danger” Robinson did the honors.) Coincidentally, on the very same day in Edinburgh, Scotland, the woman with the most lifetime piercings (6,925) got married. Elaine Davidson, 46, wore a full white ensemble that left bare only her face, which was decorated green and sported 192 piercings. The lucky guy is Davidson’s longtime friend Douglas Watson, a balding, 60-something man with no piercings or tattoos.
In June, scientists at China’s Agricultural University in Beijing announced that they had produced human breast milk from genetically modified dairy cows and expect supplies to be available in supermarkets within three years. Employing technology once used to produce the sheep “Dolly,” researchers created a herd of 300 modified cows, which yielded milk that was reported as “sweeter” and “stronger” than typical cow milk.

“We were asked to feed 50 people and nearly 75 showed up”
HELPING THE HOMELESS Maui’s homeless resource center, Ka Hale A Ke Ola, has really been feeling the love lately from the community. It started in June, when Steve Blinder and the staff of Maui Fire and Flood decided to make dinner for 75 folks at the shelter. Then more recently the community came together to build an edible and native garden at the shelter’s five-acre Wailuku property. It was a project organized by Community Work Day in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control’s “Communities Putting Prevention to Work” initiative. As far as the dinner was concerned, the crew of Maui Fire and Flood (the water and fire damage restoration company also operates a retail store called Cleaner’s Warehouse) made a nice spread of baked chicken, ham, mashed potatoes, vegetable medley, rice, salad, dinner rolls, fresh fruit and an assortment of cakes. The KP team consisted of Steve and Michelle Blinder, David Heard, Nick Soto, Kevin and Anthony Fiori, Na-
lani Cagasan and Kathi Pierceall. “We were asked to feed 50 people and nearly 75 showed up,” said David Heard, Director of Marketing for Maui Fire and Flood. “It was awesome! The second to last person on line got the last scoop of rice and the last person on line didn’t want rice. It was a chance for our staff to get together outside of work. It was a great time and we encourage other businesses to do it, too.” Since Ka Hale A Ke Ola services over 75,077 meals annually for Maui, building an edible garden seemed like a no-brainer for the center. Community Work Day, along with the County of Maui Water Department, the Maui School Garden Network and more than 60 volunteers showed up, worked tirelessly on Friday to lay the foundation, irrigation, fencing and plant 200 natives and 40 fruit trees. Maluhia Trucking donated many hours of trucking and backhoe work to the site. EKO Compost was also a major contributor of compost. Vince Mina from Maui BioChar donated locally sourced soil amendments, IMOs and Biochar. Alex

Beers (owner of From the Heart Garden Service) also donated compost which made fruit tree planting possible. And Mini-mix Hawaii, Valley Isle Fencing, Voluntourism and Holon helped out as well. Whole Foods Market came through and fed volunteers during the day with healthy snacks and locally grown fruit. “You wouldn’t believe it but our biggest hurdle is getting soil donated,” said Matt Lane of Community Work Day. “We did some great work at Ka Hale A Ke Ola but that is just the beginning. There will be lots more volunteer and donation opportunities for the Maui community to participate in.” The resource center’s vision for the garden is not only to grow food that can feed the residents of Ka Hale A Ke Ola but also to teach new skills to the residents that could open doors to new job opportunities. They also plan to green the courtyard where they hold Christmas parties as well as the area around the children’s center.

It’s a model in which patients don’t have to repeat their story to every new provider but still receive reminders when they need screenings and immunizations, and are known and cared for by a team of skilled medical professionals. One small note: the word “Home” in the title does not refer to actual home care, but here refers to a base of care for the patient; all care is still given at the clinic. “If you can eliminate errors and keep people healthier it saves the entire system money,” Lott said. n the early 1990s, anti-geothermal graffiti streaked the streets near a Puna District power plant: stylized skulls, crossbones and the characters of the compound H ² S (hydrogen sulfide). At the time, residents there were experiencing nasal passage cysts, double menstrual cycles, nausea, high fevers, abdominal pain, extreme lethargy and even miscarriages. All signs pointed hydrogen sulfide as the culprit. A hazardous byproduct of mismanaged geothermal energy, hydrogen sulfide is a broad-spectrum toxin which primarily affects the central nervous system, prevents cellular respiration and is as toxic as hydrogen cyanide. Though it was then argued that naturally occurring volcanic emissions trumped any hazardous byproduct from the geothermal wells, the Environmental Protection Agency concluded that well releases were a significant source of hydrogen sulfide. Then-Hawaii County Civil Defense administrator Harry Kim, in an interview with the Houston Chronicle, was livid. “When I leave this job, the lowest low will be our failure to protect the people with regard to geothermal,” he said. “This was a life-threatening situation, not an inconvenience.” The geothermal wells raised the ire of Native Hawaiian groups who viewed the drilling for energy held deep underground as an affront to their culture and fire goddess Pele. Internationally renowned human and Hawaiian rights activist Mililani Trask was at the forefront of the anti-geothermal protests at that time. Though she reflects on early efforts as “cheap and dirty technology,” Trask believes differently now. Today she’s the indigenous and cultural adviser to Innovations Development Group (IDG), a firm that seeks to expand geothermal development in Hawaii with a “Native-to-Native (N2N)” business development model focused on community benefit. On July 20, the all Native Hawaiian-owned company held a public meeting at Pukalani’s Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center, to “share their philosophy and get feedback from the community.” While the Big Island’s been the tortured guinea pig for geothermal technology in Hawaii, the island of Maui is the next hotspot on the horizon. But IDG insists that technological advances have made geothermal a clean, safe and viable solution to energy production. Hawaii is the most fossil fuel-dependent state in the union, importing more than 90 percent of its energy. Not only could geothermal be a gargantuan factor in establishing Hawaii’s self reliance, but the benefi-
cial byproducts can be economy boosters, too. Some uses for geothermal’s steam byproduct include produce and lumber drying, textile dying, greenhouse farming, aquaculture, bronze-casting, fruit fly eradication, cement formulization, distillation, polystyrene expansion, and healing spas. Geothermal drilling began in Hawaii in 1978 with the Hawaii Geothermal Resources Assessment Program and its identification of 20 potential resource sites across the state. The first experimental well was drilled in the Kilauea East Rift Zone, becoming operational

gy crises worldwide, they say cultural contentions can be ameliorated with planning that integrates the interests of all stakeholders (mineral resources are a publicly owned asset in Hawaii). Trask said that from the group’s global studies, “research results were disappointing.” She added that “sources of renewable energy were not being developed because of strife between natives and developers... Our basic goal is to ensure our people have a say in not only consultation,
“We happen to be the wealthiest state in the union when it comes to natural resources, but we haven’t known it to be until now.” in 1982. Producing just three-megawatts worth of power, the state-run facility outlived its two-year demonstration lifetime and closed in 1989. Within a year of the state’s test site closure, the first commercial wells, at the hand of Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV), had been drilled in an area neighboring the residences of Leilani Estates. Then in the summer of 1991, the PVG’s KS-8 well experienced a massive blowout lasting 31 hours—one of 19 releases from PGV wells between 1991 and 1993—as reported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1996. Ormat Technologies, a Reno-based company that acquired PVG in 2004, announced this May that it wants to lease 8,000 acres of Ulupalakua Ranch land for geothermal development. “We’re all friends now,” Trask said of the IDG and the Puna community’s relationship with PVG. And in the face of fiscal and ener-
but implementation.” This means that the currently mandated 10 percent royalty paid (on gross earnings) to the state by existing energy developers should be just the beginning. In a slideshow pie chart presented at the Pukalani meeting, IDG outlined the basics of what a 50-megawatt plant’s cashflow might be. With their model, 54 percent would go to operating costs, debt service and taxes; 28 percent would cover the cost of capital and developer’s equity; 10 percent goes for state royalties; six percent goes to the landowner; and the remaining two percent—estimated at $1.25 million per annum, totalling $65 million over a 50-year lease—goes into a community trust. “At the end of the lease,” Trask said, “the assets transfer to the state, which is how you create a portfolio for public utility.” The clout IDG touts includes groundbreaking geothermal projects in New Zea-
land, which they describe as the world’s first geothermal trade deal that prioritizes aboriginal host cultures. The group says their business dealings began in New Zealand 12 years ago, at the invitation of the government, and—because of their unique “N2N” model—the company won an international bid to leverage natural resources between investment partners and the indigenous community. One deal IDG recently signed is with Eastland Group to develop 170 hectares within a Maori trust block in Kawerau, a town near the Bay of Plenty on North Island. The site’s been named “Te Ahi O Maui” (roughly, “the fire of Maui”), which references the oral tradition of the high chief Ngatoroirangi, who is fabled to have piloted the Te Arawa waka to Aotearoa. The legend of Ngatoroirangi (prefaced by the cross-cultural tale of the demigod Maui—who tried to steal secrets from the goddess of fire, and in dodging her retribution created volcanic chains) says that in order for the chief to claim his new found lands, he had to be the first to ascend a frigid summit. On his frozen deathbed, Ngatoroirangi called to his sisters Kuiwai and Haungaroa in Hawaikii, who sent—via underground flame channels—the fire demons Te Pupu and Te Hoata, to warm him. This beloved Maori myth has long been the pith of the peoples’ prehistoric understanding of their geothermal gift—and IDG says those underground channels connecting Hawaii and New Zealand are now supported by science. The group aims to further connect the isles by bringing home what they’ve learned—and taught—overseas, to tap into an abundance of energy in an environmentally conscientious manner that’s “in concert with human rights.” “We happen to be the wealthiest state in the union when it comes to natural resources,” Trask said with a giddy grin, “but we haven’t known it to be until now.” ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1506a

ORNOGRAPHIC images es downloaded on official county computers. Spurned lovers. Jealous superiors. Inter-office romance gone bad. Demeaning comments about breasts and pregnancy. Falsified attendance reports. Rampant name-calling. This is juicy stuff, but it’s not from a cheesy beach novel or even a new Fox reality series. These are allegations leveled against the County of Maui’s own Department of the Prosecuting Attorney, laid out in a new lawsuit filed in both state and federal court in late May by former county Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jacki Jura. According to Jura (who was fired in November 2007 after less than a year’s employment), the county prosecutor’s office under former Prosecuting Attorney Benjamin Acob was marked by extremely low morale, tension, back-biting, scheming and frat house behavior (Acob, who served as Maui County Prosecuting Attorney from 2007 to 2010 and is named as a defendant in Jura’s lawsuit, would not comment on the suit). It’s an assertion seconded by two attorneys (not affiliated with the prosecutor’s office) who spoke on background. “It was crazy back then,” said one. “It’s a lot calmer now,” said the other, referring to the fact that J. D. Kim, appointed by Mayor Alan Arakawa, is the Prosecuting Attorney today. Jura would not comment for this story. Her Honolulu-based attorney Bill Deeley first said he would comment, but has not done so by press time. “We’d be happy to make a statement for you, but we need a little more time to investigate a couple more facts,” Deeley said in a voicemail message on July 6. In a brief phone conversation on July 21, Deeley said he still needed to talk with Jura, and wouldn’t “make a statement” until he had done so. No one at the Maui County Corporation Counsel’s office would comment either. In fact, Corporation Counsel attorney Cheryl Tipton—who is defending the county in a lawsuit filed last year by another former deputy prosecuting attorney—said she doubted the county had even been served in the Jura suit. In her lawsuit, which was filed in Superior Court on May 24, Jura said

she he started startted work as a deputy prosecuting attorney at the county on or around Dec. 6, 2006 at a salary of $61,188 per year. D yea At the time, she was pregnant. Right at the start, Jura alleges, the office wronged her. Jura says fellow Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Richard Minatoya “gave R [her] incorrect instructions to hurt her work performance and otherwise harassed [her] because of her gender and pregnancy.” Minatoya, still at the prosecutor’s office and listed as a defendant in Jura’s lawsuit, said he would not comment for this story. According to Jura’s complaint, Jura went on pregnancy leave from Jan. 18, 2007—six weeks after she started work—to Feb. 5, 2007. Upon her return, Jura alleges that her leave report “had been altered” to dock her an additional four days. Jura alleges that superiors “required” the documents to be processed incorrectly. Jura said she went to her superior, Marie Kosegarten, who allegedly told her “not to bring up the issue of her pay again or even infer that Defendant County did anything wrong or Defendant County would come up with some reason to fire” her (Kosegarten did not respond to a phone call and emailed request for comment; she is currently pursuing her own lawsuit against the Maui County prosecutor’s office). Jura also alleges that she was given a new cubicle upon her return, one that had formerly been assigned to Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Scott Hanano. According to Jura’s complaint, she “turned on the Maui County computer in the cubicle referenced above and observed pornography in the form of dozens of images of naked and partially naked woman [sic].” Jura said she also told Kosegarten about this, but received a similar rebuff. “Kosegarten warned Plaintiff not to tell anyone about DPA Scott Hanano’s pornography if she wanted to keep her job,” Jura alleges in her lawsuit. Hanano, who works for the Maui County Corporation Counsel’s office now, said he was not aware of Jura’s lawsuit until I contacted him. But after I emailed him the text of the above paragraph, Hanano did not comment further. Much of the wrath of Jura’s lawsuit is directed at Kosegarten. According to Jura, Kosegarten “disparaged” her, “negatively commented with respect to

[her] hair color and chest size, and otherwise demeaned [her].” Jura further alleges that Kosegarten told her that she (Kosegarten) had “manipulated” Prosecuting Attorney Acob into demoting another female deputy prosecuting attorney by telling Acob that this deputy had called him a “peon.” Then there’s the matter of Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Tim Tate (who still works at the Maui County Prosecuting Attorney’s office and also refused to comment for this story). Jura alleges that Kosegarten and Tate “socialized” and “vacationed together” and that this situation created “a hostile work environment.” In fact, Jura said that on Sept. 6, 2007, Kosegarten confronted her, asked if she had a “personal relationship” with Tate, and then fired her. Jura said she denied having a relationship, and that calmed down Kosegarten, who then “unfired” her. Apparently, this only bought Jura about two months in the office. After getting a $10,000 raise—and Kosegarten’s praise that Jura was “the best trial attorney she had”—Jura said in her lawsuit that her hearing problem caused trouble with
her supervisors. Jura’s lawsuit says she ran afoul of Kosegarten and Acob over her defending another deputy in danger of being fired, and over her not getting a hearing aid for use in court. After filing a complaint against Kosegarten, Jura was put on 30-day probation on Nov. 28, 2007. She was apparently terminated shortly thereafter, though the lawsuit is not clear on this. Jura said she has required medication and counseling since her firing. Kosegarten stayed at the prosecutor’s office two more years after Jura’s departure; Acob fired her on June 23, 2009. In contrast to Jura, Kosegarten worked at the Maui County Department of the Prosecuting Attorney for 15 years, and
had won numerous awards (and was named the department’s manager of the year 2003) though reportedly none while Acob was in charge. Kosegarten filed her own lawsuit against the county—and Acob—in federal court in July 2010. Kosegarten’s allegations are just as explosive as Jura’s. Kosegarten claims that Tate referred to her in “derogatory terms,” according to a July 14, 2010 Maui News story on the lawsuit. Tate made her “the subject of office ridicule and mockery,” Kosegarten alleged, according to The Maui News story. She also alleged that Tate had spread rumors that Kosegarten had referred to two attorneys as “morons” and “idiots.” She also denied using those terms to describe any attorneys. dep y prosecuting deputy p prosec Kosegarten’s lawsuit also alleged that her suKosegarten periors made threats of retaliation against her. meeting with Acob, Kosegarten During one 2009 2 Acob became visibly agitated with her, alleged, Aco pounded his p hi fist on his desk, raised his voice and an nd told her he she needed to “get over it” and said she attitude,” according to The Maui sh he had a “bad “ News N . Exotic and Delicious
Sampling the many flavors of Bistro Manila Bistro Manila 230 Hana Hwy, Kahului 871-6934
I
n April Cecille Piros decided to open Bistro Manila with her son, Ryan Piros, the Assistant Director of Communications for the County of Maui, and her husband Ray Piros. She wanted to “show that Filipino ipino food is more than pork and peas and pancit,” she said. She has been a Filipino business siness woman and mover and shaker in the Maui community since 1983, and continues es to also run her travel agency that specializes zes in trips to the Philippines. One of my favorite things about Filipino ipino food is that they unabashedly use all parts ts of the animal in their cuisine. I don’t condone done the fact that many Americans turn up their heir noses at eating offal (entrails). If we are going to slaughter animals for food, then we should eat it all—a concept the Filipino cululture has more than embraced. Their delicaacies and special celebratory dishes contain n these oft-forgotten delicate cuts of meats. Bistro Manila is what I would consider a more upscale Filipino cuisine, uisine, but you’re still going to get all the great dishes of the Philippines, though with some s fusion-type twists and extravagantt presentations. Chef Richard Cablayan hesitated at first when I asked him what was in the meaty Sisig thatt comes sizzling on a hot cast iron n aplatter lined with wood to your taous ble. After I told him it was delicious red and he could see that we devoured ened every scrumptious morsel he opened up a bit. d. “All “Made with pork face,” he said. the parts, ears, cheeks, everything.”” The dish lights up their diningg room mell. The with sizzle and a baconesque smell. marinated meat is chopped small, sauteed en served crisp with plenty of flavor and then with a raw egg over the top thatt cooks at the table. You squeeze citrus over the whole ed eating I bit and then dig in. After I started ad ordered noticed that the next five tables had the same thing. Sisig is irresistiblee here and h a beer is especially delicious served with beer, so bring your own suds if you like it that way— Bistro Manila is BYOB. One of Cecille’s favorite dishes is herbcrusted Bangus. This is milkfish, served with a whole fish filleted, split open and then coated with bread crumbs and herbs. The Kalamansi Soy Beurre Blanc completes this dish, with its tangy and savory flavor poured over the flakey fish. The Bangus is a favorite in the
Philippines, where they have been farming the fish for more than 800 years. My friend and colleague Ynez requested the Palabok noodle. “This dish is hard to make,” she said. “It takes so many steps and is one of my favorites.” Palabok is a rice noodle topped with shrimp fried in wrappers, bits of chicharon (fried pork skin), smoked fish flakes, bagoong (shrimp paste), quartered hard boiled eggs and
We also tried Inihaw. “Inihaw is a form of street food in the Filipines, but here at Bistro Manila it has transformed into an entree,” said Ryan. You can get Inihaw with chicken, beef or pork, but all are served with tomato, green onion and a truffle oil dipping sauce. The desserts are every bit as fantastic and exotic as the entrees. I had never had Halo Halo before; consider it the Pinoy version of shave ice, though tho with far more texture than the island-style island-st counterpart, as it includes mixed toppings to like melon, bright green palm pal nuts, avocado and beans. Top it off with a milky leche flan sauce and scoop scoo of ube, macapuno or mango ice cream, c and you have one of the most joyful looking foods of all time that is i just as much fun to eat. The other desserts like the cinnamon banana de Lumpia Lump and chocolate Cassava Bibingka were more m grown up but just as good. The menu at Bistro Manila covers all the basics basic and then some in Pinoy cuisine. The sense sens of adventure I felt from exploring i the h menu m

lime. Once again you squeeze citrus all over it before you take a bite. The noodles are a league ahead of Pancit, mainly because so many flavors and textures work together. The Kare Kare is the dish my friend Christina chose, a family specialty for her. In the Kare Kare, a creamy peanut sauce gravy livens up tender braised oxtail chunks and steamed veggies. We also tried barbecue pork sticks, in which delicious, skewered lean flesh was marinated in banana ketchup, brown sugar and soy sauce.
was priceless. They Theey are open from Monday to Saturday from fro 10:30am to 8:30pm. They also have a catering menu and will deliver free for take out ou orders of $50 or more in the Kahului/Wailuku area. Bistro Manila is located at hului/Wai Hana Highway and Wakea Street in Kahului, next High to the Singer Sing Sewing Center and across from Hamai Appliance, which was once Maui’s Dee-Lites Bakery before it moved into Happy Valley. ■

acknowlWe should ack knowledge that there is a cocktail renaissancee at the moment, with handlebar mustachioed d bartenders and handcrafted drinks at thee forefront, turning us all into bon viveur wannabees. At Tales this renaissance exploded ed into a revolution, with brand-sponsored cocktails ocktails in 54 tasting rooms, 45 seminars (for barb tenders!), 15 (VIP) special events and 31 complementary events involving alcohol. On Maui, this renaissance may have been slowed by Liquor Commissioners playing their game of thrones with our access to distilled spirits by placing archaic restrictions of time and space on our consumption. Anyway, I called in some favors and finagled a few passes, then hobnobbed with brand ambassadors, mixologists, magazine editors, book writers, product developers and PR folks. My first line of work was meeting Corzo Brand Ambassador Manny Hinojosa and Duggan McDonnell from Campo de Encanto Pisco. After slurping down oysters at Bourbon House, we slipped into the upstairs bar kitchen at House of Blues. McDonnel’s special “Gentleman’s Delight cocktail featured Bombay Sapphire East (not yet released), Blanco Vermouth, lemon juice, tonic and was then topped with bitters and a slice of cucumber. McDonnel hails from the Cantina in San Francisco. “This is a place where shit goes down, he told me of Tales. “It’s a lot of fun, but I do a

Daniel Singer of Filthy Pickle put together a savory display of olives, peppers and onions to embellish drinks. Up on the second floor, where ‘80s pop was my witness, I got my teeth kicked in by Camille Austin’s (of Miami’s Hakkasan) Sapphire Italian Iced Tea, an amalgamation of Bombay, Taverna Amaro, lemon juice, clover honey and Prosecco. Next door were Sapphire martinis in the Rat Pack jazz room; upstairs offered Asian delights with lounge music, a gold-painted girl sans garments and more Bombay delights. As a Sapphire devotee, I was lucky to escape with my notes intact. But there was a far more serious side to bartenders that I didn’t know about. As a bartender’s darling on Maui it’s always peachy from the stool side of the bar. But here in the trenches at Tales, bartenders were toting notepads and pens, scribbling away side by side with me at the “From Grain to Bottle, seminar on the history of distilling booze and the nuances of starting your own booze brand
(extra points to Maui distillers who have way more hoops to jump through than their Mainland competitors). Put simply, there is nobody happier about the surge in craft distillers than the t Alcohol Tax and Trade Bureau. MC Dan Dunn tion with (Livin Living Loaded) indulged me in a handshaken shake Daiquiri and chat at the hosted bar whe where I quizzed him about the upcoming pilot on his book. Then his gravely voi voice dismissed me with an incoming tex text “from a new lady friend.â€? Just when I thought I had had enough of booze writers, I headed to my final seminar, “Drink “Drinking on Deadline.â€? It was presented by Pa Paul Clarke, Wayne Curtis and David Wondrich. W Their symposium of drunk literature started off with Pisco cocktails by Johnny Raglan of Comstock Saloon and Erik Adkins of Heaven’s Dog. After Clarke read a bit of Kingsley Amis verse, and discussions of great boozy writers like Devoto, Embury and Holland went around, it was Q and A time. “So what about the deadline? How do we stay productive in the face of these drinks?â€? asked the unnamed author of the blog Congenial Hour (thecongenialhour.tumblr.com). “I have never made a deadline in my life,â€? one presenter said. “I am not the right person to ask about that,â€? said another. The last was most helpful: “A deadline is about when you get started on your article, right?â€? â–

A week’s worth of full-sensory silliness for keiki to kupuna ark Twain wrote in Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc that “a good and wholesome thing is a little harmless fun in this world; it tones a body up and keeps him human and prevents him from souring.” So in the name of keeping it fresh, and for the sake of rods, cones, songs and tones, here’s a roundup of upcoming on-isle events that celebrate humanity and all we’re capable of making, doing, and imagining.
M OPEN SESAME
Sesame Street Live “1-2-3 Imagine! with Elmo & Friends” (Friday) July 29, 7pm; (Saturday) July 30, 10:30am, 2pm & 5pm; (Sunday) July 31, 1pm & 4:30pm Castle Theater, MACC, Kahului; $10/$20/$33/$48 (Golden Circle)/$73 (Sunny Seat) Puppeteer Jim Henson (1936-1990) was so progressive, it’s possible he’s from another planet. From Muppets to Fraggels and more, he’s helped us revel in rainbow connections, asking “what’s on the other side?” and reminded us to “dance our cares away [and] let the music play.”
WILL YOU HIDE THIS IN YOUR PURSE FOR ME? “Movie Night” Vegetarian Cooking Class with Chef Devin Kintop (Tuesday) August 2, 5:30-6:30pm, Down to Earth, Kahului; free You know what? Simply for the sake of my arteries, sometimes I feel like eating a kiddie pool-sized bucket of butterdrowned popcorn, and sometimes I don’t. When it comes to movie theater fare, I know I’m not alone in this sentiment; be-
A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN “The NewlyMet Game” with Gameshow Fanatics (Friday) August 5, 8:30pm mingling/9:30pm first game, LuLu’s Lahaina, Lahaina Cannery Mall; $10 OK. This event isn’t until next Friday (August 5), but I’m letting you know a little early because I empathize with recluses who really want to go out, but need a little time to work up the nerve... especially in the case of a party that marries awesomely awkward first

In the late 1960s, Henson was commissioned by Children’s Television Workshop to pioneer an inspired children’s program for public television. The result was the seminal show Sesame Street; still going strong since 1969. (Fun fact: Originally, Henson performed the characters of then roving reporter Kermit, game-show host Guy Smiley, and Ernie.) This weekend, today’s keiki (or keiki at heart) have six chances to see their favorite characters live onstage at Sesame Street Live “1-2-3 Imagine! with Elmo & Friends.” For lovers and dreamers, the show features characters like Big Bird and Abby Cadabby, with imaginative song and dance stories including Ernie captaining
the high seas, Elmo boogeying in an African forest, and tracks with titles like “I Don’t Want to Live on the Moon,” “She’ll Be Comin’ ‘Round the Mountain” and “Surfin’ Safari.” Understanding the importance of capturing keiki memories, one cool thing Sesame Street Live allows is candid photography. But if you want to guarantee a good shot, you can opt for the Sunny Seat package, which includes front row seats and a preshow meet and greet with two characters. cause on my friends’ behalf (and mine too, of course) I’ve smuggled in everything from several Subway sandwiches to a couple plate lunches to many mini (and not-so mini) bottles of liquor—and I see all y’all doing it, too! Point is, movie munchies are a must whether you’re a snack trafficker, or refinancing your home to pay for over-thecounter treats, or are just staying at home with your Paradise Video rental. So why not something that fits the bill—but is healthy to boot?
Down to Earth in Kahului offers free vegetarian cooking classes every Tuesday evening, and each week features a different theme and batch of recipes. This week is “Movie Night” and the lesson plan includes seaweed/sesame popcorn, pomegranate molasses popcorn balls, ultimate party mix, nutty chocolate treats and vegetable casserole. So, so long, $5(ish) footlong. That extra 50 cents you tacked onto Sandwich Island prices ruined the jingle anyway. [8772661; downtoearth.org]
encounters and high-pressure spotlight fun. Gameshow Fanatics (the fine folks who bring us restaurant and event editions of “Game Show Nite”) debuts their coolest new concept “The NewlyMet Game,” hybridizing speed dating and the classic TV quiz show The Newlywed Game. Team up with a soon-to-be ex-stranger (and if you’re lucky, soon-to-be ex-lover) to find out how well you’ve gotten to know each other during your preliminary mingling. As ever, the all-original handcrafted sets are professional-looking, polished works of art that help put contestants in the live onair mood. Plus, they’re doling out great ‘date’
prize giveaways. But what’s really winning is enterprising host “Dick Dawson” (i.e. magician Brenton Keith), who embodies all the smarmy charm of old school American TV with his salt and pepper powdered coiffure and dummy microphone. Keith and crew’s charisma can bring even the biggest misanthrope out of the box and up to the podium, get ‘em laughing and in this case, maybe even get them laid. [6610808; gameshowfanatics.com] ■

BEST COAST
Crazy For You (Mexican Summer 2010) This is an album that is from and about Southern California. Crazy For You is sunny and colorful, but something dark hovers about at the same time. Best Coast is among the latest, alternative-indie-hipster group to emerge from the Southland. Their style is reminiscent of LA’s pre-indie rock acts from the 1990s like That Dog, The Breeders, The Rentals and Weezer. But unlike those acts, Best Coast sounds older with echoing melancholy guitars akin to surf music from the ‘60s. Frontwoman Bethany Cosentino sings a bit like Neko Case when she invokes whimsical, but sad melodies. And although Cosentino may sound like Case, her lyrics are a far cry from Case’s imagery and power. Cosentino was only about 21 when she wrote the songs for Crazy For You. It shows. In almost all of the songs, she is whining about a boyfriend. (“Pick up the phone/I wanna talk/About my day./It really sucked. The sun is out/I thought I was fine/But then you slipped/Into my mind.”). And “Goodbye” describes the classic selfabsorbed middle-class young artist living on her own for the first time (“I lost my job/I miss my mom/I wish my cat could talk./Every time you leave this house/everything falls apart.”). But her immaturity is part of the charm. The band and album embodies hipster LA with its sunshine, endless summers, warm days, lazy afternoons and drama. This is the soundtrack for long drives in the sun. -Ben Lowenthal

FILM
barry@mauitime.com
Hilarious and Heartbreaking New Steve Carrell flick is uneven, but touching Crazy, Stupid, Love.
★★★★★ PG13/113 min
C
al (Steve Carrell) finds out that his wife (Julianne Moore) has been unfaithful, which sends him on a self-loathing spiral to a singles’ bar. A handsome ladies’ man named Jacob (played by Ryan Gosling) notices Cal’s nightly displays of drunken sulking and decides to teach him how to be a pick up artist. Meanwhile, Jacob finds himself falling for an unobtainable beauty (Emma Stone) who isn’t sure what she wants in a man but knows it isn’t Jacob, whose smooth one-liners turn her off. We also have the high school romance between Cal’s son (newcomer Jonah Bobo) who is in love with his babysitter (Analeigh Tipton, the film’s biggest discovery). There are also subplots with colorful roles provided for Kevin Bacon, Marisa Tomei and, in a respectable acting debut, crooner Josh Groban. The biggest problem with this overloaded ensemble comedy/drama is that the screenplay is too focused on surprising and misdirecting audiences; many scenes don’t feel remotely real. The points the film has to
make about love are complex and universal, but the world it takes place in is clearly a fantasy. Yet despite many contrivances and some dumb choices (like a misguided nod to The Scarlet Letter), wonderful moments shine through and the cast makes it work. Back in sad-sack Dan in Real Life mode, Carrell is in top form and pulls off some dramatically demanding moments. Moore tones down her tendency to play out of control spouses as shrill monsters and finds complex angles in an almost unsympathetic character. Best of all is Gosling, the Sean Penn of his generation, who uses his keen understanding of human nature and extraordinary acting talents to shape a vivid and most enjoyable comic figure. Gosling’s great work is the best thing about the film’s shaky first half, where the sitcom-level dialogue is relentless. The actors are frequently better than the script but the film finds its footing at the mid-point. The weaker scenes are overly familiar comic scenarios (like embarrassing public declarations of love and misunderstandings that lead to fist fights) that the film fails to make fresh. The screenplay feels like this should have been a low budget, prototypically quirky
OMG! It’s just like high school all over again.
“indie” lark. Instead, as is the case with Juno, the story is offbeat and character-driven but the talent involved and production are all big league. I’m not complaining that Warner Brothers funded such an obviously Miramax-y film, just that the definition of “an independent film” gets glossier. Crazy, Stupid, Love works as far as that goes but seemingly gone are the days when something “dangerous” like Blue Velvet or The Crying Game truly challenged adventurous audiences attending Grade-A art house movies. The film’s tone and story structure are quite similar to Playing by Heart, which also
had wonderful actors and moments clashing with too many forced surprises. Few films can be so hilarious and heartbreaking when dealing with the messy topic of long lasting relationships and how you have to fight for them. While uneven and containing some missteps, I was touched by it and the performances, particularly by Gosling and Tipton, who make it essential summer viewing. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1506g

Home Bon Friday & Saturday (July 29 & 30), 7pm service/8pm dance, Wailuku Hongwanji Misson; free
Planets in orbit. Ripples in water. Bon dancing. Proof positive that concentric circles are the coolest. If you’ve never participated in a bon dance, fret not–there’s no need to bone-up with dance step diagrams. Simply squeeze yourself into the rings around the yagura (i.e. the towering bandstand centerpiece), keep your eyes locked on da kimono-clad aunties, and follow along. Oh, and remember to grab a tenugui (towel) at the entrance–not only as a sweet festival memento–but so you can twirl it in time during songs like “Yagi Bushi.â€? If you’re like me, you’ll (finally) ďŹ nd your rhythm right around the time each song ends. But, you’ll have a blast and get a belly full of laughs (at yourself). Speaking of full bellies, the whole obon shebang stems from the story of Mokuren the monk and his passed-on mom–who was relegated to The Realm of Hungry Ghosts; hence ono obon offerings at altars and in graveyards. Naturally, every festival features mean kine grinds for the living, too. These seasonal festivals are almost at their end, so (in addition to this weekend in Wailuku) here’s a list of your remaining chances to get out your getas and hop into your happi coats: (Saturday) Aug. 6, 6:30/7:30pm, Kula Shingon Mission; (Friday & Saturday) Aug. 12 & 13, 6/7pm, Lahaina Hongwanji Mission; (Saturday) Aug. 20, 6/7pm, Paia Rinzai Zen Mission.

While making whoopi, for Homo sapiens, is mostpredictable post-argument or on anniversaries, Montipora capitata (i.e. rice coral; or in Hawaiian, puna kea) is known to get nasty during summer months, within a few days after the new moon. [T]here are some things that can beat smartness and foresight. Awkwardness and stupidity can. The best swordsman in the world doesn’t need to fear the second best swordsman in the world; no, the person for him to be afraid of is some ignorant antagonist who has never had a sword in his hand before; he doesn’t do the thing he ought to do, and so the expert isn’t prepared for him. - Mark Twain, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court
I
recently tried saving a document as “Stuffs Fo’ Do” (yes, most of my file names are in Pidgin), but received the booped error message “’Stuffs Fo’ Do’ already exists.” So, I tried “Stuffs Fo’ Do_2” (boop!), followed by “_3” and “_4” and “_5” (boop! boop! boop!), before succumbing to the fact that I get plene stuffs fo’ do. But having a full schedule is no excuse for fatuity, and everyday—neigh every moment—I’m confounded by my capacity for it. Case in point: My time ill-spent late Sunday night at the laundromat. I thought I was being so productive with my brand new spray bottle of Invisible Glass, trotting between OCDing my windshield and adding softener or dryer sheets. But then I locked my keys in the car—which I’d parked behind a locked and barbed wired gate. Talk about high agitation. At the laundromat you can buy wire hangers for a quarter a piece. I destroyed a dollar’s worth. Given the frequency with which I pull this sort of tomfoolery, I’d like to think I’ve earned enough skills to consult on the set of a Gone In 60 Seconds prequel. But after contracting tetanus by tangling myself in a bouquet of untwisted hangers as if within the tentacles of Cthulhu, I questioned whether I could get into my car even if I had the key. Dear Mr. Murphy, the mocker, made sure my phone died right in front of my eyes; so I was left with no other option but to hike the declivity-free road from Kahului to Wailuku with a massive basket of laundry on my head like some third world washer-woman who’d lost more than her way. Thestreetlights’arnivalmirrorshadows had me fretting about my biceps bulking, exacerbating my already wretched wings, and with every passing car I worried (and wished) someone might pull over and attempt to return the idiot to her village. No one did. I had at least five long lists of stuffs left fo’ do (there are also exponential, deprioritized files
named “Try Fo’ Do Dis” and “Try Fo’ Do Dat”), but having no way of getting to them or the things that would enable their accomplishment, I resigned to crashing on my buddy’s couch and listening to Howard Stern until those tired, popping flashes started to appear in my peripheral and consumed my vision with an unwilling, unaccomplished fade to black. Randy Bartlett, friend of the paper and the world’s premier Facebook liker, recently retweeted a link from unclutterer.com with an image of J.K. Rowling’s organizational notes—part of a penned grid that helped her construct the almost 4,200-page, sevenbook epoch of Harry Potter & Co. Having been so recently reminded that mindfulness of dotting or crossing little lines makes a big difference— and a desire to be more than pygmy scribe—I looked at Rowling’s notes carefully in an attempt to assess my own writing processes. At which point, I realized, I have none. At least, none to speak of. See, I own a pile of notebooks of every dimension, rule and binding; and by the looks of my gallimaufry penmanship, each is seemingly possessed by demons outnumbering the swine in the Gospel of Mark. Many pages are streaked with mud, embossed by stilettos’ seal and stink of booze. Should there be anything of literary value in any these notebooks, I’ll never know because it’s all mostly unintelligible (except for the curse words, which persevere by sheer adjective strength). With nothing scratched off my list(s), in eternal return I’ve only added new stuffs fo’ do. 1) Exorcise penmanship. 2) Seek some semblance of processes. 3) Keep your bloody keys in hand... Obviously, if these simple things are still issues at this point in my life, I may have to add to my begrudged acceptations that I’m a trickless ol’ bitch. While this means I might be unteachable, I’m going to embrace Einstein’s definition of insane and try to learn better. So if you see frazzled me fiddling with wires whilst a basket’s atop my head, don’t throw me any bones. I can’t, after all, learn but on my own. ■

Sign Language LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Just because you now have serious bargaining leverage doesn’t mean you necessarily have to (or should) use it. In fact, the classier way to go is to not mention it at all. Oh, it’s on the table—there’s not much anyone can do about that. But by not overtly and explicitly involving it in whatever negotiations you’re having, you’re taking the high road and allowing things to play out in a way that’ll hopefully lead to a resolution that’s satisfactory to everyone, not just you. Ultimately, that’s the better end result, even if you personally don’t get the absolute best deal you might have. Trust me on this.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) So the utopian fantasy you dreamed about didn’t pan out (guess what: they never do). Forget your disappointment and disillusionment for a second, and especially try to ignore that “grass is always greener” thing, which is sure to crop up right around now. The truth is, everything looks shinier from a distance; once you get close up, you see all the flaws, inconsistencies, and problems. The ones here may indeed prove to be too much to accept. But before you conclude that for sure, take another look, and remember that it’s probably this bad (or worse) anywhere else, and ask yourself: is this something you could, on second thought, learn to live with?
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Discrimination happens all the time. Unfortunately, no one’s figured out how to rid the world of prejudice and bigotry in one fell swoop. So far, the best way to do so is one person at a time, usually through personal interaction. Surprising people out of their unfair assumptions, while time-consuming and occasionally difficult, is satisfying and obviously in your best interest right now; therefore, make sure you give it the proper amount of attention this week. You’ll have numerous opportunities to enlighten and/or slap awake people who are in desperate need of it. Seize them, please.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Vacations (or the ever more popular “stay-cations”) should be departures from ordinary life. It’s especially important for you Fish to shake things up periodically and experience radically different versions of reality, so you don’t get stuck in one particular aspect of your infinite self. The next chance you have, make sure you get out there and have an adventure of some type (interpret this as creatively as you wish). Consider it a vacation from any rut you’re stuck in (or might be, soon). That’s more important than ever, so don’t postpone it any longer than you have to.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) I’m almost certain your suspicions about someone you love are, if not totally unfounded, mostly false. However, living with your paranoia can’t be fun, nor healthy, so finding a way to resolve it should be your priority this week. Hopefully, a respectful, open conversation is possible, because that’d be the best way to figure out what’s really going on, and certainly cheaper and easier than some of the alternatives (like hiring a private investigator). However, if you really can’t see swinging that frank exchange (or won’t buy what’s said regardless) you may have to go another route. Ultimately, do what you must to get over this, now. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Denying your dark or negative feelings will probably only make them stronger, more pervasive, and relentless. Therefore, don’t. However, dwelling on them is equally unlikely to help matters. Instead of trying to shut out the darkness (which, perversely, is part of your strength), simply attempt to inject more light into your life. Get involved in something that will counter, in some way, your own internal negative forces. This may involve shuffling things around so you have time, money, or energy for a new activity. For the sake of your mental and emotional health, don’t be lazy; get on it. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Guilt isn’t often a useful emotion. That’s not to say you should try to ignore it when it happens—it’s probably conveying fairly valuable information. However, dwelling on it isn’t helping anyone. Here’s what you should get out of guilt: “Shit, I should never do anything like that again; meanwhile, what can I do to fix the situation?” Once you’ve addressed that basic thought, move on and let it go—beyond that, it’s not doing anyone any good. In other words, don’t wallow. Action is the only panacea when you feel the way you do. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) There are people (I call them trolls) who enjoy nothing more than lurking about, waiting for opportunities to stir up shit. They goad people into episodes of anger, bouts of frustration, and fits of crying, apparently for no other reason than they seem to enjoy seeing it happen. Often, they’re very good at finding ways to get people to engage with their bullshit, employing multiple strategies—if one doesn’t work, they’ll try another. Unfortunately, there’s no winning here: Even if they’re “wrong” and you’re “right;” that’s just not the point. The only viable strategy is walking away without giving them a drop of energy, which is often very hard to do. Nevertheless, you should try.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Gloating when life is fantastic is a sure way to jinx it. That’s not to say you shouldn’t notice and appreciate when things are going well; you should, or you’ll be miserable when they take a turn for the worse (which they will, sooner or later). I’m just saying parading your (momentarily) near-perfect life around is only going to make people resent you and hope pianos fall on your head. Instead, use this chance to be even more present, available, and wonderful for those whose lives aren’t in such great shape. In other words, spread the joy instead of merely putting it on display; it’s the best way to make it last. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Every relationship—particularly marriage—is an agreement between two people. The problem is, so often the terms of that agreement aren’t explicitly laid out. It’s not romantic to discuss some of this stuff! However, when people assume they’re on the same page, it leads to unpleasant surprises (and the high divorce rate). Unconditional love is great in theory, but in practice, the kind of sacrifices and concessions serious relationships require deserve some payback—both people have to be getting something valuable out of it. Making sure you will, before you sign the papers, buy the ring, etc, just makes sense to me. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Here’s what often happens when the “right thing to do” is something unpleasant; people go around asking for advice on the situation…and asking…and asking—until they find the words that will let them rationalize doing what they actually want to do. This is cheap. Don’t do it. Doublechecking what you suspect is the case is fine; you might be wrong, after all. But once you get confirmation, don’t keep getting second, third, and thirteenth opinions until you find one that jives with what you secretly want to do. If you want to do the wrong thing, maybe you should, but own it, and make sure you can live with having done it—before you actually go there. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) The recession has forced unpleasant choices on almost everyone, but what it shouldn’t do is put a serious hitch in your romantic life. Moving in prematurely (or continuing to live with your ex) for economic reasons is a bad idea no matter what, for example. You need to find ways to separate out your economic reality from your emotional one. It’s perfectly possible to be happy (and/or in love) and be poor as dirt; it just requires being a little more creative and resourceful than those who can afford endless floral bouquets and dinners in fancy restaurants.
