READER FEEDBACK

PARTY ROCK KREW PRESENTS

BY READERS LIKE YOU READERS THROW DOWN I know MauiTime only puts up a few bands and artist as their cover story (“The Throwdowns to Earth, Aug. 4, 2011). Talented people, too. But have you ever considered doing a cover story on DJs? Some of us are damn good entertainers and just as creative as our band/artist counterparts. It would be refreshing to see a DJ for once on the cover. A few others feel the same way too.

-Evan Ratkowski (Dj Decka), via email Hi, I just want to comment on your article on The Throwdowns. I think it was one of the nicest--real and sincere--I have read on them. It just so happens that I am one of the moms, so I follow and try to read all I can, since I am on the Mainland and try hard to keep up. Thank you for appreciating them and acknowledging that they really are a group of genuinely nice, talented people. I hope you are well these days. Take care.

HATES BUREAUCRATS Regarding reader feedback, insight on the need for more personal participation in the political and governing process by Bonnie Moureau and the article about the lady lawyers taking on the heads of their departments in the justice system (MauiTime, July 28, 2011): it seems clear that outlandish hysterics, marches in the streets and shouting at the government people really hasn’t gotten the general public much, if any, progress on any front. In fact, our American governmental system is set up to give the power to the people, and not “corrupt self-serving government employees, at any level of government. If more people today understood how to use the tools given to them by the U.S Constitution, and the constitutions of the various states, most of these corrupt government workers, (who have made a lifestyle and career out of mucking up our lives while being paid by our taxes) would be running for the hills. The whole process and perspective must change from blind dependence on those in authority to active citizen action at all levels by having every able citizen donating his or her time and fortune to give back to the whole for the betterment of all.

Maui’s Dirty Dozen of Land Development BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO

H

ere are 12 proposed projects that residents should be watching. Of course, some are worse than others, but on the whole, these developments will alter Maui radically over the next decade. Piilani Highway in Kihei alone will get six to seven new traffic signals to handle the new neighborhoods that are going in. Consider the following list a brief outline to the proposed growth, rather than a rigorous examination of the merits of the projects:

1. Waiale Community Development Project: Who wouldn’t like a 2,500-unit project that will house 5,000 or so people in Waikapu? Alexander & Baldwin thinks no one will mind that the affordable housing going in will be on land either on or near an old landfill, asphalt processing yard, sod farm, scrap yard and sand dunes loaded with old Hawaiian burial sites.

2. Developer Mike Atherton has proposed a big 900 to 1,100-unit project near the Maui Tropical Plantation, though what it will exactly consist of keeps changing. It currently includes a 1,200-acre agricultural preserve, which would be rather unique. 3. Wailea 670: Somehow this project still struggles on, through four or five ownership changes. Anyway, it’s still proposing 1,150 units in South Kihei mauka of Piilani Highway. 4. Haleakala Ranch has partnered with Goodfellow Brothers and Woodbridge Capital to put in 1,000 residential units in the Maui Technology Park area. 5. Kaonoulu Ranch owns a sliver of land that stretches from Kihei to Kula. They’d like to put in a new village. 6. The Ohukai neighborhood is planning to expand further up the hill in Kihei. 7. In North Kihei, near the intersection of

Mokulele and Piilani Highways, A&B would like to build something like 600 new residential units. 8. Pulelehua: This popular Maui Land & Pineapple Co. project situated around Kapalua Airport will include 1,000 new units, about half of which will be considered affordable housing (it also includes affordable housing spurred by the construction of the company’s already approved Kapalua Mauka project).

Talk of the Island

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO

A STANDOFF ENDS Last Thursday, after much negotiating, authorities finally brought a tense and somewhat scary situation to an end. In truth, I was somewhat surprised at the speed at which the standoff came to an end, but it’s always nice to see these things end before tragedy strikes. I’m speaking, of course, of the state Campaign Spending Commission’s decision to fine mayoral executive assistant Bill Medeiros $2,750 for not filing a single campaign finance report during the 2010 election. The commission also gave Medeiros six weeks to get his reports filed. In 2010 Medeiros had been running for reelection to the Maui County Council seat representing East Maui, but he lost to former County Council member Robert Carroll (who, ironically, more or less gave the nod to Medeiros when he retired from the council back in 2006). When asked by The Maui News why he failed to file any campaign finance reports (which outline in sadly vague terms who donated money to campaigns and how said campaigns spend said donations), Medeiros offered some, shall we say, novel excuses. “[He] said the reports were not filed because money was apparently lost or stolen from his campaign account, and he did not have all the required information,” he said in an Aug. 12 Maui News story. The Aug. 12 Maui News story also quoted Medeiros directly on the alleged “theft.” “They [the commission] understand that this identity theft investigation has all but crippled my campaign finances and made it all but impossible to submit my campaign reports,” Medeiros said. And there we would normally leave it, except for two things. First, a previous Aug. 12 Maui News story reported that while Medeiros did indeed file a report with the Maui Police Department on the theft, he waited until two months ago to do so, even though the alleged theft took place between April 2009 and March 2010. “Asked why he waited so long to file the police report, Medeiros said he had filed one earlier, but it had apparently been lost,” The Maui News reported on Aug. 10. Medeiros did not say who lost the report. Also, this isn’t the first time Medeiros has run afoul of the Campaign Spending Commission. In 2008 (his first reelection campaign), the commission fined Medeiros $2,000 for not filing eight campaign spending reports, some of which, The Maui News reported, were “more than 600 days overdue.”

A CAMPAIGN BEGINS I’m using the word “begins” here with some measure of irony because when you’re talking about Gary Hooser, the campaign never really stops. Hooser is as progressive as they come. He’s for civil unions and labor unions, so he’s pretty much got all the traditional lib-

eral bases covered. But right now he’s languishing in his current job as director of the state Office of Environmental Quality Control. It’s not a bad job as far ass bureaucracies are concerned, but it lacks the challenge and

conflict that comes from elected office. Richard Nixon would say that Hooser is at home “in the arena” of elected public office. H misses the giddy uncertainty that He comes from a political campaign. Ho Hooser represented Kauai and

Niihau in the Hawaii State Senate from 2003 to 2010, a number of those years as Majority Leader. In 2010 he ran unsuccessfully for Lieutenant Governor (losing to Brian Schatz). I first heard of Hooser in 2006, when he ran unsuccessfully for the 2nd District U.S. Representative seat (losing to Mazie Hirono)–a job he appears to be running for yet again. “I can no longer merely watch from the sidelines as the ‘politics as usual’ in Washington threatens the very fabric of our lives and the security of our democracy slips further and further every day,” he wrote in an Aug. 14 press release. “The Governor’s New Day in Hawaii agenda is a good one that I wholeheartedly support. At the end of the day, however, I know in my heart that at some point, serving in public office is where I need to be... The 2nd Congressional District in the United States Congress is a path many have encouraged me to explore and one which I am seriously considering.” Hooser’s announcement did not surprise me. “@garyhooser – run we need a bona fide rep of 2nd cong,” Senator Roz Baker, D-West/South Maui, tweeted on Aug. 13 (of course, Baker’s less than grammatically correct tweet could also be interpreted that the 2nd Congressional District–which encompasses all of Hawaii except for Honolulu–currently lacks a “bona fide rep"). In any case, Hooser’s press release ended with that universal sign of legitimacy that marks every campaign announcement dating back to the early days of the Republic: a blatant and naked call for members of the public to start sending him huge sums of cash. “I must have your help and financial support,” Hooser wrote. “Whether it’s $25, $50, $100 or more–To begin anew down the path toward elective office, I must have your help today. Our campaign must raise $12,500 this month for existing obligations [read: to pay off debt from his previous campaign] and an additional $25,000 to fund other expenses necessary to maintain an ongoing strong and credible campaign presence.”

CONGRATULATIONS It was very nice to read in the Aug. 14 Maui News that Jeanne Unemori Skog, the Maui Economic Development Board CEO, has been named by President Barack Obama to the Commission on Presidential Scholars, though for admittedly immodest reasons. While chatting with Skog at some event years ago, it became clear to me that she “got” MauiTime–she understood and even sometimes enjoyed the way we handle news, arts and entertainment coverage, and it felt gratifying to hear such words from someone in such a position of respect. So from all of us at MauiTime, we hope Skog does well. ■

A&B AND STUDENTS Alexander & Baldwin has awarded scholarships to four Maui students as part of their scholarship program for employee dependents. The scholarship is offered throughout the state and on the Mainland. A total of eight aspiring college students received awards between $2,500 to $4,000. “A&B’s scholarship program was first established in 1971, said Linda M. Howe, Vice President, Alexander & Baldwin Foundation. “The application information and criteria is provided to A&B employees only, however, because the program is not open to the general public. There were eight students in total who received awards this year, and each is renewable up to three years. The most exciting element was: the uniformly delighted reactions of the proud and happy parents! This year’s scholarship recipients include four children of Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company (HC&S) employees: Olivia Borge, Liane Nakamae, Justin Shortell and Carlin Ventura. These four students were among the eight selected company-wide to receive scholarships this academic year, to support their undergraduate or graduate education. Olivia Borge is the daughter of Brady Borge, general mechanical specialist at HC&S. A recent graduate of Kamehameha Schools-Maui, Olivia will attend Stanford University. NEWS OF THE WEIRD BY CHUCK SHEPARD

TOP GUN Todd Whitehurst may be the “father” of from 42 to 60 children, based on statistical probability that recognizes his virtuosity as a sperm donor, according to a June New York Post profile (though one website, Donor Sibling Registry, claims to have documented 129 children sired by an unnamed seed demon, who is one of 92 highly productive men with 10 or more). Whitehurst, who like the others, was selected based on his sperm’s profile and speed, donated weekly for about three years in the late 1980s (for $50 a session), and has been contacted so far by nine teenagers who sent him their photos after piecing together evidence identifying him (despite sperm banks’ promises of confidentiality). Whitehurst, acknowledging the resemblances to his “offspring,” seems to find the relationships fulfilling, however limited they are. Said he, “I love Father’s Day.”

BRIGHT IDEAS New York scent artist Christopher Brosius had made his name with fragrances recalling childhood (such as Clean Baby Butt, Green Bean and Baseball Glove), but felt it was time, according to an April report in New York magazine, to approach the next frontier—to make a perfume so exclusive that no one could smell it. By Brosius’ reasoning, the scent’s chemicals would provoke whatever reactions scents provoke in those exposed to it, but the actual scent would be undetectable to the nose; hence, no one would know why they were reacting as they were. By trial and error, he combined jasmine, sandalwood and natural amber, and scaled them down in power, yielding what he calls Where We Are There Is No Here. Said Brosius, “The question, ‘What perfume are you wearing?’ should never arise.”

BLOW AGAINST THE EMPIRE Bank of America (BA) had the tables turned on it in June after the company wrongfully harassed an alleged mortgage scofflaw in Naples, Fla. BA had attempted to foreclose on homeowners Warren and Maureen Nyerges last year even though the couple had bought their house with cash— paid directly to BA. It took BA a year and a half to understand its mistake—that is, until the Nyergeses sued and won a judgment for expenses of $2,534, which BA promptly ignored. The Nyergeses’ attorney obtained a seizure order, and two sheriff ’s deputies, with a moving truck, arrived at the local BA branch on June 3 to load $2,534 worth of furniture and computer equipment from the bank’s offices. After about an hour on the phone with higher-ups, the local BA manager issue a check for $2,534.

GRAND THEFT Police in Doncaster, England, were on the lookout in June for an organized group of four female and two male shoplifters who hit a liquor store on Bentley Road in May but left an interesting crime-scene story

on the surveillance video. While five of the crew distracted employees, one woman, wearing pants, walked to the back but emerged minutes later wearing a large wraparound skirt and waddling slowly toward the front door. After the unsuspecting employees bid farewell to the six, they discovered that the office safe was missing and concluded that the waddling woman was holding it between her legs.

SNAKE TOWN China’s sleepy Zisiqiao Village in Zhejiang province is actually headquarters for the country’s revered snake industry, with 160 families raising about three million serpents a year, mostly to harvest livers and gall bladders for soup, wine, and other products consumed for their immunitybuilding properties. In a June Reuters dispatch, one farmer described the 25-year evolution of “Snake Town” from a place where farmers simply threw males and females together for breeding to today’s sophisticated production facilities that supply proper snake diets, research measures to enrich female fertility, and provide enhanced incubation conditions.

OR 10 YEARS NOW I have been taking my lunch breaks down by “mud flats” just past Sugar Beach Resort on Waikapu beach. It’s great there, except you keep showing up. Now I know that I am in a secluded area—that’s what I like about it. It’s peaceful and quiet, and once in a while a guy or lady will go naked and that’s fine if they are minding their own business and staying a distance away. But you’re different: you show up for about 10 minutes, disappear and then return for another 10 minutes or so. At first you wore these turquoise shorts from the 1970s, but then you’d take them off and wear just a G-string. Later even that came off. But you never have a tan! Anyway, you always sit close by, and you constantly stare. You occasionally try to make conversation by apologizing for your nakedness, and even when I’m rude and tell you to leave me alone you don’t give up. You’re obviously turned on being next to women like that. I don’t mind you being naked, but I do wish you’d leave me (and other women I know) alone. ■

THE CONTINUING CRISIS Perhaps a kindergartner needs to have his dad wait with him and wave bye-bye as he steps onto the school bus in the morning, but Rain Price is a 10th-grader (in American Fork, Utah), and his dad, Dale Price, nevertheless waves from the bus stop every morning, right in front of Rain’s friends. Furthermore, according to a June report by KSL-TV in Salt Lake City, Dale makes it a point to be wearing a different, “crazy” costume every morning (170 in all for the school year, including, once, a wedding dress).

OUCH! A 93-year-old woman was rescued by medics in Philadelphia in April after spending several days stuck in her own toilet. According to KYW-TV, she had to be carried out with a portion of the toilet still stuck tightly to her body. And In Tooting, England, in May, an unnamed senior was rescued by firefighters after he got his testicles caught in a shower seat on which he was sitting while bathing.

FETISHES ON PARADE Toshihiko Mizuno, 55, was arrested in Tokyo in June after three girls, ages 9 and 10, reported that he had talked them into spitting for him so that he could record it on video, to assist with “research” he was doing on “saliva.” Police later discovered 26 videotapes, featuring about 400 young girls spitting. According to local media sources, Mizuno has had the obsession for 17 years, successfully getting at least 500 girls to spit, among the estimated 4,000 he propositioned. ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1509notw

E INTERESTING MAUI TWEEPS 1. @ReqB (Brendon Smith). This guy, the GM of Requests Music in Wailuku, tweets constantly and colorfully and seems to know everyone on the island. 2. @AMWart (Aimee M. Watters). This Makawao (via Detroit) fine artist may only have 39 followers as of this writing, but anyone who tweets “Looks like Barry Manilow bought Clay Aiken’s face” is worth reading regularly. 3. @OleloOfTheDay (by @HawaiiBookBlog). Follow for a daily dose of interesting Hawaiian words and their meanings, oft with a humorous edge. Recent words include “kiapolo” (devilish), “koli” (meteor), and “’ilio hanu kanaka” (hound dog; lit. dog who smells man). 4. @raatz (David Raatz). This Wailuku writer, lawyer, vegan, basketball and tennis player and USC fan has information and insight on a wide variety of topics—some political, some not—of island interest. 5. @mauisadie (Sarah Loney). When she’s not firing lasers atop Haleakala, she’s designing costumes for local theaters. 6. @GilKAOGG (Representative Gil Keith-Agaran). A lot of local officials are on Twitter. Only Gil does it properly, tweeting often on local politics, football and SF Giants baseball. 7. @spectekula (Sara Tekula). She’s a co-producer for @TedxMaui, a filmmaker and consultant for @NoniFilms, treeplanter for @PlantAWish and social media director for @mauifilmfest. 8. @GrandmaFlorence (Florence Hasegawa). She’s a 103-year-old Lahaina resident who lives Twitter. What’s not to love?

ADORABLE-SOUNDING INVASIVE SPECIES 1. Apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata, Pomacea bridgesi, Pomacea paludosa, and Pila conica) - While Eve’s apple may have undone man’s innocence, the word “apple” evokes thoughts as sweet as its meat (perhaps thanks in part to the Biblical idiom “apple of thine eye”). Its cuteness can even withstand being compounded with the likes of “pine” and “crab” and, in this case, buddied alongside the slimy word “snail.” This

veryone likes lists, right? David Letterman’s Top Ten, the Chicago Seven, the Forbes 400, the Indianapolis 500–wait, that last one might not be right. Anyway, we seem to enjoy reading about stuff in list form because it’s fast and easy, which is why we decided to do this, our first ever Official MauiTime Book of Lists. We thought that compiling a bunch of lists would be a lot less work than writing a bunch of stories, and boy, were we wrong. In retrospect, we should have published our Book of Lists as an actual book (you can find additional lists on pages 5, 13, 15 and 28). So here ya go:

freshwater crawler is named for the size in which this invasive species can grow, but apple snails in Hawaii only get about as big as a golf ball. They’re bad apples because they “damage taro plants by chewing into the corm at the very top of the taro plant, which leaves a hole through which bactteria and other pathogens [can] enter,” says the Hawaii Invasive Species Council (HISC). “Damage either kills the plant or drastically reduces crop quality and yield.” 2. Barbados gooseberry (Pereskia aculea2 ta) - This plant’s namesake island nation may ta sound d like a vaca vacation, but a romp through its thorny thicket is masochists. Its stiff spines fan like unfriendly firereserved for maso works and cover c climbing branches which can grow upwards of 33 feet long, chok choking-out other vegetation. 3. Coqui frog (Eleutherodactylus coqui) - “All frogs in the orC ( der Anura are Hawaii State Injurious Species,” says HISC—and the cutely quarter-sized coqui is the order’s most famous culprit. Consuming “huge quantities of insects... from forest floor to treetops,” coqui frogs contribute to the “loss of insect services such as pollination” and are a “potential food source for snakes if they were to arrive.” It’s name is an onomatopoeia for its vocalization, via its native Puerto Rico, but the males’ incessant nighttime chirrup can be highly irritating to humans who prize their beauty sleep. 4. Kitties (Felis catus) - Roadkill and mange aside, Maui’s many roaming clowders appear as cuddly as the kittens printed on your tutu’s mouse pad. But wild cats differ from household pets and strays in that they’re, well, wild. To boot, their burgeoning population may even double that of humans on the isle. “[T] hey’re extremely fecund,” reports former MauiTime editor, Jacob Shafer. “[A] fertile male and female cat and their descendants can produce up to 420,000 offspring in a seven-year span.” Should you asininely attempt to coddle one, these cats may pose some zoonotic risk (i.e. they could transfer some infectious disease to humans). But the feral cat’s most egregoius threat is to Hawaii’s endemic birds–rare, winged paragons of isolated evolution that aren’t hardwired to fear predators. Meanwhile, cats are “‘opportunistic hunters,’ meaning they’ll stalk and kill prey even when they aren’t hungry,” says Shafer. “And they’re obligate carnivores—they have to eat meat.” 5. Mongoose (Herpestes javanicus) - Rikki-Tikki-Tavi of Rudyard Kipling lore makes for a magnanimous image of the mongoose, but its species is highly hazardous to Hawaiian fauna’s

health. A shortsighted intentional introduction (in 1883, to thwart rats) led to established populations that not only hunt birds, but love to gobble eggs from endangered nesting birds and sea turtles. 6. Snowflake coral (Carijoa riisei) - The snowflake is sublime before sublimation or liquefaction—and en masse are beautiful in moderation; i.e. blizzards of the non-Dairy Queen sort tend to suck. In that line of thought, snowflake coral (named for polyps boasting “eight white, frilly tentacles,” according to HISC) ought to be renamed snowstorm coral. Non-reef forming, it grows aggressively, covering and killing other coral species (including the rare, deep water black coral), and consumes large amounts of zooplankton which are essential to the food chain. 7. Wood rose (Merremia tuberosa) - Popular as an ornamental, the perennial wood rose’s mature seed pods resemble balsacarved blooms. “Infestations of wood rose are sometimes the result of [discarded] old floral arrangements that harbor seeds... [and] seeds remain viable for years,” writes John M. Randall and Janet Marinelli in Invasive Plants: Weeds of the Global Garden. With tubular yellow flowers that open in sunlight and close in shade, it’s a pretty but problematic plant because “[t]his twining climber aggressively invades hardwood forests climbing high into the canopy, often completely enshrouding trees and shrubs and reducing native plant diversity.”

FIVE PLACES ON THE ISLAND TO SEE OLD STUFF FROM WORLD WAR II

1. Pillboxes at Paia Bay. There are two intact beach bunkers here, each located just a few hundred yards on either side of the Paia Youth & Cultural Center. 2. Old frogman base in Kihei. The Royal Mauian Resort in Kihei sits atop what was once a U.S. Navy Underwater

Demolition Team (UDT) training base during the war. There’s not much there now, except for a monument in the nearby park (which actually references the 1951 movie The Frogmen starring Richard Widmark) and some old pillbox slabs lying in the nearby shallows. 3. Puunene drag strip. In the early 1940s, this was the Puunene Naval Air Station, which served as a fighter strip. And interesting note is that this is the field where, in the 1943 movie Air Force, a B-17 bomber lands during the attack on Pearl Harbor and immediately comes under sniper fire from a Japanese saboteur hiding in the surrounding cane fields (historians say no such sniper attacks occurred during the war in Hawaii). 4. Sunken landing craft off coast of Maui Prince. There are many wrecked planes and boats dating from the war in Maui’s shallows (many not catalogued) but one of the easiest wreck for divers to find is in Makena, northwest of the Maui Prince Hotel, about 60 feet down. It’s a landing craft carrying a 75mm tank turret. 5. Horizons Academy of Maui, located at 740 Haiku Rd. This is apparently the only surviving structure left from the internment camp used to house Japanese nationals that once sat near today’s Pauwela Cannery in Haiku. “Reportedly built as bachelors’ quarters for the plantation and used by the military for an officers’ club, it would have been present when the internment camp was in operation,” states the December 2007 TransSierran Archaeological Research report on World War II Internment Sties in Hawaii. “The building has been extensively remodeled, with new siding and windows, but the general structure, including the post and pier foundation, appears to be original.”

ABOMINABLE-SOUNDING INVASIVE SPECIES 1. Biting flies [biting midges (Ceratopogonidae), sand flies (Psychodidae), blackflies (Simuliidae), and mosquitoes (Culicidae)] - More than a nibbling nuisance, these bad bugs carry diseases and are, simply, as disgusting as they sound. 2. Gorilla ogo (Gracilaria salicornia) - Not to be confused with the native limu manauea (Gracilaria coronopifolia)—which has a similar look, but is prized for its taste—gorilla ogo is a fast-growing seaweed that even reef-dwelling fish won’t eat. Spreading mostly by fragmentation, it smothers coral and other seaweeds with its huge mat-like tracts and stinking swaths oft wash ashore to rot. While Maui’s yet unaffected, Oahu is infested as is Hawaii Island’s southern coast. 3. Lethal yellowing - Fifty years ago, three quarters of Florida’s palms were affected by a deadly palm disease which the University of Florida describes as a “systemic disease caused by a phytoplasma transmitted by a planthopper.” We’re lucky to be yet unaffected—the ecological and economic results would be devastating. But according to HISC, “[m]ost of the coconut trees in Hawaii are believed to be susceptible.” So help keep an eye out for symptoms which include “premature fruit drop, blackening of inflorescences, yellowing of leaves, death of spear leaf, and toppling of crown.” 4. Little fire ant (Wasmannia auropunctata) - Because of the word “little,” we were at first inclined to put this invasive species on the adorable-sounding list, but the “fire ant” follow-up quickly trumped that temptation. These buggahs arrived as hitchhikers on imported plants, and infest agricultural fields where they are damaging to crops, support other pests (like aphids) and inflict burning stings that leave welts which can last for weeks. Little fire ants “can also infest houses, beds, furniture and food,” according to HISC, and “(i)n the Galapagos, eats tortoise hatchlings and attacks the eyes of adult tortoise.” Gross! 5. Noxious weeds - “Noxious weed” sounds like the name of a punk band, or some crip pakalolo; but it actually encapsulates a list of plants deemed by the government as “legally noxious,” i.e. injurious to agriculture, ecosystems, livestock and/or people. Now, a few plants on Hawaii’s list have names which beg to be on the adorable-sounding list (e.g. downy rosemyrtle, moon cactus, plume poppy, shoebutton ardisia, silverleaf nightshade,

and tree daisy), but then there are species like barbwire grass, bitterbush, firetree, gorse, perennial pepperweed, spiked pepper, spiny emex, torpedograss, wild spikenard, and witchweed—which all do justice to the noxious name. 6. Snakes - Ever since Eden, the suborder Serpentes have gotten a sinister rep, putting the fear of god in us all. Here in paradise-not-yet-lost, we’re fortunate fools to rush in where angels might otherwise fear to tread. But if snakes were ever to establish themselves in Hawaii, not only would they wreak havoc on the ecosystem, but you’d have to say aloha to carefree adventuring on our Polynesian playground where such predatory dangers don’t yet abound. 7. Veiled chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus) - These buggahs (which can grow up to two feet long!) have quite the heebie jeebie name, huh? It’s a double dose of pseudo-synonyms that conjure images of insidious camouflage. “Ecologically, they can function like brown tree snakes,” says HISC, “are able to tolerate living in areas that vary from dry sea level elevation, to very wet montane areas, up to 12,000 feet elevation.” Females lay 30-95 eggs per year, compared to the similarly invasive, but smaller—albeit more prevalent—Jackson chameleon (Chamaeleo jacksonii), which bears live young.

FIVE REASONS TO WORRY ABOUT THE PROPOSED MAUI MEDICAL PLAZA AT KANAHA 1. A six-story building doesn’t fit into the character of Kahului, which has mostly low-rise structures. 2. It will sit next to the Kanaha wetlands, a bird sanctuary that is home to a number of bird species, including the endangered Hawaiian stilt and Hawaiian coot. 3. It sits in a tsunami/sea rise zone. 4. The 2002 Wailuku Kahului Community Plan is pretty clear on what to do with such land: “Protect shoreline wetland resources and open space resources. These natural systems are important for flood control, as habitat area for wildlife, and for various forms of recreation. Future development actions should emphasize flood prevention and protection of the natural landscape.” 5. U.S. Poet Laureate (and Haiku resident) W.S. Merwin opposes it. “Of course the island needs a medical center, and it might be worth looking into why it has taken so long to assemble ble e island,” the necessary interests to provide one anywhere on the Merwin wrote in the Aug. 8, 2011 Maui News. “But Kanaha Pond—or what is left of it after the years of gradual encroachroachnks to ment by everything from highway construction and gas tanks business premises, small industries and the local waste treatment plant, each with its incessant toxic contribution—remains ains ked unique, and the damages are irreversible. It cannot be picked up and moved elsewhere.”

by fragmentation and soon got out of control. The University of Hawaii Botany Department reports that “during the winter [hookweed] can represent 2/3 of the biomass of drift algae on windward and leeward beaches on Maui,” and in peak blooms thousands of pounds are “tossed ashore in windrows up to 1.5 feet and are considered an odiferous pest.” 4. Fish - To‘au and taape are tasty invasive sea fish, but be cautious with the infamous roi—it may have ciguatera, a nasty food borne illness. 5. Blackberries, Dewberries and Raspberries (Rubus) The state Department of Land and Natural Resources has designated all non-native Rubus species (i.e. blackberries, raspberries and dewberries) as some of Hawaii’s most invasive horticultural plants. While they’re delicious fresh or preserved, according to HISC, they “form dense, impenetrable thickets that exclude other native plant species.” 6. Prawns (Dendrobranchiata) - These tasty buggahs (great fried or in spicy Thai dishes) were introduced in failed aquaculture attempts, and escaped to streams afflicted by reduced flow. Prawns have infested Hawaii’s freshwater—killing native shrimp and fish—because they leave the streams for the sea to spawn, where from they travel to new locations, and eggs are shed instead of brooded. To hunt them, they must be speared individually (nets and traps don’t work well)—so it’s impossible to eradicate them via manpower alone. But there is one beautifully simple solution: allow Hawaii’s streams to run at their natural capacity, instead of diverting water. Prawns detest copious amounts of fastmoving cool water; in places like Waihee River, where some flow has been restored, prawns are not prevalent. 7. Strawberry guava (Psidium littorale) - These sweet ruby orbs were introduced to Hawaii nearly two hundred years ago, and have been choking-out native forests ever since. But the fruit makes a divine jam or glaze that’s just a touch tart, and the wood is excellent for smoking meat.

STUFF ON MAUI TO PROTEST 1. The state law that prevents the public from knowing the

TASTY INVASIVE SPECIES 1. Axis deer (Axis axis) - Dear Bambi: Your mom died because she’s delicious. Sorry... Deer populations on Maui are now estimated to be in the tens of thousands, and are devastating home gardens and proprietary crops. Hmm... Who wants a kiawe-smoked venison kabob? 2. Bamboo shoots (Poaceae) - After a few days of soaking to rid them of their bitterness, fresh bamboo shoots are a decadent addition to Asian et al dishes. However, fresh bamboo shoots are surprisingly hard to find at local eateries (instead we import the canned stuff), even when the bamboo fills our forests and grows upwards of a foot per day. 3. Hookweed (Hypnea musciformis) - Hookweed’s cultivated worldwide as a food source (kappa carrageenan is a red seaweed extract used in baking and is a vegan alternative to gelatin), and was introduced to Hawaii in the 1970’s for mariculture. But hookweed (named for its slender tendrils that twist around and smother other types of limu) spreads quickly

names of police officers throughout Hawaii who have been disciplined by Internal Affairs. 2. The ability of law enforcement agencies to track citizens using the location data on their smartphones. 3. Factory fish farming that’s taking place off the coast of Maui, Oahu and other islands. 4. The Maui County Department of Liquor Control’s ban on dancing except in specially designated areas. 5. Hell, let’s just protest the whole LC department. ■ To share or save: mt.hy.pr/1509bol

Small and Forgettable One Day is mostly a waste of time BY BARRY WURST II One Day

★★★★★

Rated PG13/108 min

T

wo British teens, Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Dexter (Jim Sturgess), once nearly had a random hook up in college but blew their chance at a night of passion. The consolation prize— they remain friends for years, even as Emma is stuck in loveless relationships with others and Dexter becomes a tacky talk show host and substance abuser. Even with all the predictable melodrama that ensues, it’s unlikely you’ll remember One Day the next day, as this is the kind of small, forgettable movie Hathaway and Sturgess do in between the bigger and more established projects. Hathaway, in particular, is playing Catwoman in the new Batman thriller next summer and only her most ardent admirers will remember this love story. Even her Love and Other Drugs was a far better, funnier and more interesting choice for the talented, onthe-rise actress. One Day sets up the story with an odd, unsuccessful gimmick: the first scene takes place on June 15, 1988 and every following

scene takes place on the same day every which bored and turned off its intended audifollowing year. The angle doesn’t work, beence. This one takes too long to give viewers cause we feel like we’re missing too much as what they want and predictably turns on them one year transitions to another. The story is in the last act. The ending may put a lump also so poorly constructed that it could have in your throat but it feels like a cheat. Even taken place over the course of a single year the set-up feels false: in the AIDS conscious instead of 20. The passing of time sort of late-80’s, the casual sex in the opening scene comes across better in the everchanging hairstyles of the leads, though Hathaway’s 2003 look Look kids, Big Ben! too-closely resembles Jennifer Beals in 1983’s Flashdance. Hathaway’s on-again, off-again accent is unconvincing but her typically plucky, hard-working performance services a weak foundation. On the other hand, Sturgess (excellent in The Way Back earlier this year) isn’t very good here; despite playing the juicy role of a drug-abusing, womanizing pseudo-celebrity, he doesn’t give the part much personality. The uneven chemistry between the leads is like watching Hathway and James Franco at the Oscars again. Patricia Clarkson’s feels very late 60’s, not 1988, when the scare role as Sturgess’ mother is too small and the of sexually transmitted disease was peaking characters all lack depth. (no one here ever mentions a condom, either). Frequently unpleasant, the movie brings Director Lone Scherfig, whose An Education to mind Robert Pattinson’s Remember Me, was slightly overrated but still affecting, con-

structs this overly familiar romantic drama with a gimmick that will leave audiences feeling they’ve missed something. 500 Days of Summer had a far more coherent and inventive method of the story jumping around in time to illuminate a relationship on fragile ground; that movie made us feel like we were seeing a highlight reel of a doomed relationship. The fragmented editing of One Day feels like we’re seeing snippets of a better movie that got cut down to ribbons. Instead of being dazzled by the giant leaps in time, we want to shout out “but… what happened after that?!” Music lovers should enjoy the soundtrack, in which you’ll revisit Tears for Fears, Tracy Chapman, Stereo MC’S and Fatboy Slim (to name a few) and composer Rachel Portman’s 4-note theme is lovely. Despite the lovely Hathaway and the fun soundtrack, the film never drew me in. It never connects in the way the filmmakers intended and is best for die-hard fans of the leads. ■ barry@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1508f

Owailapalooza A searing new rock foursome charts a course to stardom, rooted in Hawaiian-style ideologies

t’s a blistering Upcountry mid-morning, and I’ve just walked into Jayson Vierra’s home studio, nestled a few turns into a whimsical Pukalani neighborhood. Particle ply board stitched together by plaster, a mountain of Mesa Boogie stacks skirted with cigarette butts, and walls washed with pistachio paint and oxblood trim make this space a band room’s band room with a rugged country flair. Over the years, Vierra’s practice space has hosted a slew of notable Maui bands—playing genres from reggae roots to pure punk— and on this day, Maui’s own Owaila has made it their home. “This place has been a sanctuary for me,” says Owaila frontman and bassist Kanoa Kukaua, of Gomega et alia fame. (As an aside, I’m of the persuasion that Kukaua’s a nonpareil talent who’s every endeavor is worth your audible immersion.) Kukaua and his comrades—Chad Kaya (guitar, vocals), Ryan Rego (guitar, vocals) and Tavi Tenari (drums)—recently revamped Owaila this past April (with a respectful shot-out to former, founding drummer Mike Russell); and the band’s since been songwriting with the voracity of their swift rock licks. And after months of honing their sound, Owaila’s slated their first big gig with their new lineup, this Friday, Aug.19 at Stella Blues Cafe. As I sneak in to the “sanctuary” to sit beside Vierra and his soundboard, the band’s balls-deep in a track called “Stars”—an original, decidedly Incubus-influenced song that explores Polynesian seafaring navigated by the night’s stars. It’s through songs like “Stars” that I discover that the band’s lyricism is what makes this new rock outfit so interesting. Versatile musicians with a penchant for heavy-hitting

tunes, this youthful, local foursome—to my word-hungry ear—has a passion for heartfelt storytelling and an interest in the human condition. “Sometimes we forget what it means to be a human on Earth,” says Kukaua of the impetus of their songwriting. The band then explains their songs are highly metaphori-

cal and unafraid to delve into topics like death and dying in a way that reflects on tough predicaments in a mature and contemplative way. This strikes a chord with me, and I inquire as to what makes something meaningful and their favorite things about being human. At this point, we’re talking story outside during a break in their practice session, sucking on cigs under the slow-burning sun and sitting around a rough-hewn meat smoker looming in the yard. (And I can’t help but enjoy how very rock-and-roll this feels—especially with photographer and film director Don Lane on hand, working with fevered pitch and double-fisted cameras to document the band’s genesis.) I discover they’re enamored with humanity’s capacity for feeling emotions and discovering new ideas. This makes sense for a band who prizes creative liberties (they tout how natural and uninhibited their collaborations are); and when the conversation turns to a worldwide music industry upended and in flux, Owaila expresses how “fortunate (they) feel to be in this band, at this time... A change is coming—a musical revolution—and we want to be a part of it.” And because I find their music so toothsome, I also ask the band to describe their music as a flavor. They can’t help but laugh—especially Kaya who seems to observe my playful question with a serious that makes evident his commitment to his craft. “Neapolitan,” says Rego of their post-genre raucous rock. “An Everlasting Gobstopper,” he later amends. “Maybe a Hot Tamale,” says Tenari. “Da kine where you’re a little scared at first, but end up liking it a lot.” “Bittersweet,” “salty,” “savory,” and “plate lunch,” are all other flavorsome descriptors they—and all apropos. We then reconvene inside so they can finish practicing their set (about fourteen songs so far, plus one Israel Kamakawiwo`ole cover, “Hawai‘i ‘78” which when you hear their rendition you realize that song is meant for such a heartbreaking hard rock reworking). It’s then I have the chance to reflect on what flavor I’d describe the band to have: Owaila has the bite of a kiawe-smoked kabob; the kind augmented with the secret ingredient of seaside camaraderie bathed moonshine. Their audible aesthetic is forged of metal—which makes for a great show—but what keeps me listening is the transcendence of their ideologies; with roots firmly planted in Hawaiian-style positivity, while keeping their eyes to the sky and ears to the world. It’s this concoction that makes me happy to have heard of them from the onset—and you can, too, by checking out their debut show this Friday at Kihei’s Stella Blues. Become a fan of the band at facebook.com/pagesowaila and myspace.com/owaila. here’s a stunning—albeit somewhat subtly displayed— art exhibition currently at Wailuku Coffee Company (my official fueling station), featuring a rotating exhibition of works by James Lafferty. His provocative art is Americana re-imagined, as if H.P. Lovecraft took a tornado to Oz (after all, Lafferty’s Maui-born but Kansas Cityraised), becoming the Tin Man bestowed with a bleeding heart while trading a quill from his quiver for a tattoo gun. However, dear readers, after interviewing Lafferty, I was bestowed with so much juicy, candid insight to his art’s impetus that I’ve been struggling with how exactly to best share it with you. That said, you’ll have to stay tuned to next week’s edition. Meanwhile, you’d do well to check out Lafferty’s show for yourself, while sipping a latte or enjoying the cafe’s “Music Farm” jam sessions on Sundays (oft featuring the talented Kaulana Kanekoa, Shawn

Michael, Chava Godinez and Marcus Springs). In other Market Street art news, after 11 innovative and interesting years, Gallerie Ha is closing its doors. Artist and gallery owner Pat Masumoto—while in the heat of preparing for her 11th anniversary celebrations—says she received a notice from her landlord that “though (she’d) been a great tenant, he wanted the space back.” Tension naturally thickened, and culminated one sad day when she opened her gallery’s blooming back doors—expecting to find tall, healthy grass around the courtyard’s pond—but instead only found “dry, dusty, dirt!” A belly laugh connoisseur, Pat’s MO is to always look at the lighter side of things. “Soon it struck me that ‘the grass is greener on the other side,’ and my explosions of laughter turned into feelings of liberation. So despite much ado, Masumoto forged on with her plans to celebrate her anniversary at August’s Wailuku First Friday—“employing her favorite jazz band” SLAM featuring David Choy and Clay Mortensen, plus spoken word poets—in a showcase she calls “a thank you gift” for Wailuku. Though Masumoto says she feels liberated and is eager for new adventures (find out

PICKS BY ANU YAGI more about her next move at slowarts.com), her presence in Wailuku will sorely be missed. She’s the embodiment of emancipation, quirky and unabashedly herself—qualities we could all do to embrace. And just as Masumoto’s artistic endeavors will continue, art itself continues to be as tenacious as the life that creates it. So in the spirit of this issue’s Book of Lists, here’s a rundown of art happenings on-isle in the coming days and weeks.

The Yardbirds are more than a Rock band... they are an institution... which, in the brief period from 1963 to 1968, made an indelible mark on the “Shapes of Things to come. To the casual music fan, the Yardbirds are best known as the band that honed the skills of future “guitar gods Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page; and for their slew of chart hits, including “For Your Love, “Heart Full of Soul, “I’m A Man, and “Over Under Sideways Down. This event is a fundraiser for the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association.

South Maui Community Park (Makaiside of Pi‘ilani Hwy., Kihei) - “Ground control to Major Tom / take your protein pills and put your helmet on!”

lright. I’m breaking form a little this week to make way for (you guessed it!) more lists. But hey, I gotta say something about this whole “Book of Lists” thing: A list of adorable-sounding invasive species? Another compiling tastiest aliens? WTF was I thinking, right? I suppose I’m starting to second-guess how I used the opportunity to create lists about anything. Did I squander that chance? See, I’d hoped that blurbs about yummy—albeit crummy—stuff like strawberry guavas and invasive ogo might be as fun to read about as they were to write. (Also, I recently had the pleasure of dining with the good Dr. Lorrin Pang, Maui County’s District Health Officer, and it was his generosity and knowledge that inspired the lede’s bit about prawns et alia.) But life’s just a bunch of downs and ups—right? On the flip-side of feedback, you know what? Frankly, dear readers, I’d rather read your lists. In fact, one of the coolest things about writing this column is getting to read the stories that some of you have shared with me in turn. Such word-love exchanges make me feel like a sucked-up spider who’s escaped the vacuum bag, and that’s been super salubrious for my spirit. Look, what I’m trying to say is thanks for thinking to say and send those things, and please continue to hit me up (if you like). But I digress... And speaking of ups and downs, here’s a list of some cool CHUTES & LADDERS: 4th Marine Division Park, a.k.a. Giggle Hill (Kokomo Rd., Haiku) - Beyond its castle-esque playground, Giggle Hill’s the perfect place to fly a kite, cloud gaze, and enact AirSoft FPS or foam-noodle jousting games with friends. Hana Ball Park (5091 Uakea Rd., Hana) Like everything in Hana, thank god for it!.

Honokowai Beach Park (L. Honoapiilani Hwy., Lahaina) - Hello? It’s a playground on the freakin’ beach. Kahului Park (Corner of Niihau St. & Hina Ave., Kahului) - Seemingly the only sweetly shaded spot in all of Central Maui, this play structure’s a teensy bit rickety (which kinda adds to its awesomeness). Keokea Park (218 Lower Kula Rd., Kula) - Whether bathed in ochroid twilight or

Wailuku Heights Park (655 Alu Rd., Wailuku) - Even a Kula kid’s gotta admit that this park’s got the best view of the isthmus, hands down. All this thinking about playgrounds got me reminiscing... Does anyone remember playing the genie game? You know, when you’re digging in the sandbox and (gasp!) you unearth an innocuous rock magic lamp. Its roly poly genie inhabitant is willing to grant you three wishes (and you can’t wish for world peace or more wishes)—what are they? Ahem... 1. Not long before you reach Kahakuloa—where the road opens up to sweeping seaside pasture after winding along precipices’ edge—there’s a little roadside honey stand that I lalalalove. Maybe I’ve simply had terrible timing, but lately there’s been only limes for sale. So, I wish for honey. In fact, I wish bees were so happily abundant (free of pests like the beetle currently devastating Honolulu hives; and whatever else might affect colonies), that you couldn’t ramble on rural road without coming across a roadside honey stand. After all, if you’re supposed to make ade from life’s limes, abundant sweetener (and bees to pollinate the plants in the first place) sure do help. 2. I wish the moon was easier to photograph! Otherwise, I’m convinced that unless you borrow equipment from the likes of National Geographic, you’ll never develop anything more than a tiny white dot on a black background. Is a photogenic moon so much to ask for? I mean, I can barely remember what I ate for breakfast, let alone recall the finer details of our natural satellite’s indigo vs. ivory reverie; and that’s something I don’t want to forget. Besides, I’m pretty sure that’s why cameras were invented in the first place—even poets are frustrated trying to capture the mercurial moon. 3. Mean kine machete skills. OK. That’s all the lists I have room for. Again, now that I’ve showed you mine— show me yours. ■

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions on page 7

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Denying a cheering audience an encore is pretty cold. However, exhausting them by delivering three, four, or more bonus performances would be a terrible idea, too. Haven’t you ever heard of the concept, “leave them wanting more?” Make that your strategy this week, even though that will likely leave you wanting more, too—maybe even more than they do. Suck it up, Leo. Playing a little hard to get is what’s best for your long-term well-being. Don’t be cold and aloof. Staying cool (and slightly unattainable), though, will have them eating out of your hand.

Before you go over someone’s head—even if you’re pretty sure you’re going to have to, anyway—approach them directly. Tattling would leave them feeling paranoid and picked-on, which won’t help matters one bit. Treat this person like a reasonable human being (even if they don’t often act like one) who’ll hear your request or criticism with at least a modicum of politesse and an open mind. You may be pleasantly surprised by the end result, even if the encounter itself proves difficult. The direct approach is harder, sure—but it’ll also feel better, and, more importantly, work better.

1. B. Flashing two shaka signs to loved ones. 2. D. Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies 3. A. Kihei

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

As you know all too well, there’s such a thing as too much of a good thing. What was fantastic and healthy when abundant becomes an overwhelming source of misery once it has the chance to proliferate endlessly. You may need to firmly end the cycle this week. I understand your reluctance. Sometimes that means being harsh. Also, what if your efforts transform feast into famine? Unfortunately, that’s a risk you’ll have to take. Half-measures won’t work here. If a plant is taking over your garden, you deprive it of the water and sunlight it needs to thrive, at the very least. However, if you really want to get the job done, you rip it out by the roots.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Fix the problem only you seem to see. It may not be your business, but there may also be no one else. Don’t imagine some knight in shining armor will ride up and take care of this. You don’t need to be a hero. Just step up and do your best, before the situation worsens. You might be inviting trouble, conflict, and drama into your life by getting involved here, but that’s irrelevant; it’s still the right thing to do. Luckily, along with all that crap, some good stuff may come too, stuff like: opportunity, profit, love, recognition, serenity, and satisfaction. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

This is a good week for fixing broken relationships—particularly ones you broke. It won’t be easy, though. You’ll have to be humble, and admit to (and apologize for) all the mistakes you made. You’ll also have to be truly sincere in your desire to make a new connection, one with totally original parameters. You’ll never again have what you had, so fixating on that is a pointless waste of time. Instead, you need to become inspired about what can be, instead of what was—and the realistic hope that, at least in some ways, it might be better. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Scorpios will climb way out on a limb for someone they love. This, naturally, has regularly gotten you into trouble throughout your life. I hope that your willingness to go through hell to help those dear to you never fades; however, you might start being more selective about just how far you’re willing to stick your neck out, and for whom. You should still be willing to go to extremes—that’s part of what makes you special. But taking them down a notch, or exercising a little more caution…well, those would be signs that you haven’t forgotten how to be a good friend—you’ve just learned to practice wisdom, too. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

You and I are both big fans of the truth. However, truth in all things at all times is a recipe for unhappiness, misery, and strife. I’m not advocating that you lie; however, smart decisions about what to reveal, and when, can go a long way towards increasing your serenity and making the people around you generally happier, too. There are times when failure to disclose something is just as bad as a big, fat, black-hearted lie. This isn’t one of them. In this case, keeping your mouth shut is probably the kindest, smartest thing you can do.

Being anything—Aries, bisexual, Republican, actor, or any of a million other labels—comes with its own set of baggage. People make assumptions. “Oh, you’re one of those!” Of course, only terribly boring people fit cleanly into any category, and you’re not one of those. Therefore, resist using such labels to describe yourself, no matter how much people insist. You are you, and none of those things comes close to conveying exactly who that is. If someone really can’t be bothered to figure you out on their own, and insists on some kind of category for you, tell them, “I’m one of those People You Don’t Know.” TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Getting a “yes” every time you asked for anything would make all that approval kind of meaningless, wouldn’t it? It’s the challenge of surmounting a whole mountain of rejection that makes whatever you get in the end—job, romance, sex—that much better and more satisfying. Rejection is a hugely necessary part of the big picture, so censoring or second-guessing yourself out of fear of it is really, really dumb. (Understandable, but dumb.) This week is a good one to pile on the rejections that’ll make your ultimate success that much sweeter. Get out there and start racking them up. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Do you really want what you think you want? Or is it only desirable because you’re pretty sure you can’t have it? How much of your fantasy life is about the titillating thrill of the unattainable, and how much is devoted to desires that might actually be fulfilled, if you play your cards right? It’s fun, and totally okay, to have dreams that you know (whether you admit it or not) will never come to fruition. However, you also need some—preferably most—that are actually possible. This week, make sure that at least half the time you spend making wishes in your head is used on wishes that can come true.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Many pet owners suck, because they didn’t realize what they were really signing on for when they got their new companion. You too, may be feeling disillusioned about the commitment you made, now that you’re living it, and it’s not what you’d imagined. Tough shit. You have two choices here. The first is: suck it up and truly live up to your end of the bargain, because doing what you consider the bare minimum is lame, cruel, and unfair. The other option, of course, is to back out before you make everyone involved miserable. However, you have an obligation here, too: Just like that regretful dog owner, who must find her pooch a wonderful new home, it’s your job to at least try to leave those you inadvertently led on better off than when you found them.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Imagine a world where marriages weren’t “’til death do us part,” but rather, say, “for the next seven years.” Even though this model is arguably less romantic, I’d bet a much higher percentage of these marriages would succeed. Here’s the problem with stuff like lifelong commitment: people change. A decade from now you’ll be quite a different person, with new desires and goals—and so will whoever you’re with. Even if you’re perfect together now, your aims may be completely incompatible in ten years. Don’t fool yourself. Accepting—and planning around—that truth is a big part of making decisions that’ll ultimately lead to more happiness than disappointment.
