Keep it up (“The Art of Skimboarding, Sept. 8, 2011). Skimming is one of the best things in the world. I skim @ Deer Creek (shhhhh) here in Ventura County [California]. It’s one of the only places with proper tides and good sand, but it’s kinda seasonal—the north swells of the winter redistribute the precious sand back to Mexico until the souths start to bring it home around May. I wish more skimmers were around here, especially girls. I ride a slotstick (R.I.P.) Adrian Prince.

-Cameron Lynch, via Mauifeed.com Part of their project to bring awareness to the women of skimboarding is also a musical (Run, Drop, and Glide) that has been submitted to film festivals. It has been accepted at the SoCal Independent Film Festival in Huntington Beach, CA. A trailer for the film can be seen on the festival’s Facebook page. We have also applied to the the Hawaii International Film Festival, and are keeping our fingers crossed as the notification date approaches. I have had the privilege of helping Lana [Kelliher] with her passion project for the women of skimboarding (the SkimChicks!) and helped hang her artwork in Whole Foods.

LIKES RURAL ROADS Leaving road surfaces rough is actually a stealthy form of “traffic calming and can reduce speeds thus saving gas (Coconut Wireless, Sept. 8, 2011). Also it is a “jobs program since vehicles subject to the pounding need shocks, suspension work and tires more often. Can the island really afford to maintain all the secondaries now? Investment in things like the water system or low-income home energy-efficiency programs make more sense. Legalizing and taxing ganja and other rec. drugs could provide money for programs that deal with real underlying problems leading to lethal drug use... education, no jobs, cultural friction, housing issues...

-Bion Howard, via Facebook Nowadays, the “infamous road to Hana is a veritable cake walk compared to the “road around the Westside of the island....

TALKINGWITH... T Senate Candidate Ed Case

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO

oday he’s managing attorney with the Honolulu law firm of Bays, Lung, Rose & Holma, but from 2002 to 2007 Ed Case was a U.S. Congressman, representing Hawaii’s Second District. In 2006, Case gave up his very safe seat in the U.S. House to run against U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka. He never got close to the nomination, but now that Akaka is retiring, the ideologically moderate Case is once again a declared candidate in the 2012 race to be a U.S. Senator. On Aug. 26, Case met with essociate editor Anu Yagi and me for a chat about the race. MAUITIME: Thanks for agreeing to meet with us. Why are you running for Senate? ED CASE: I’m running for three reasons. This is Hawaii’s opportunity and obligation to choose which direction they want for a U.S. Senator. In all likelihood, whoever takes over will lead the Hawaii delegation. It’s a generational change. Second, the country is in a mess. The rating of Congress right now is 17 percent—who is the 17 percent who thinks it’s okay? And third, every Senate seat is crucial.

What’s the biggest issue facing the U.S. today? The economy and jobs. If you don’t have a solid economy then people don’t have jobs and we can’t afford to sustain our social programs or protect our environment. We have very limited options to dig ourselves out of this puka.

What are our options? We can start with balancing the budget. Washington is stuck in a constant crusade of extremes. It’s just a bunch of people yelling at each other. If you listen, they say you either raise taxes or cut spending. I say do both, and that upsets people. The Bush tax cuts can’t be sustained. Some people call that a tax increase. I call it letting bad tax cuts expire. I think the vast majority of this island, state and county don’t like government by battle, and don’t like partisan gridlock. You may not like 100 percent of what you get from me, but you will get a solution. This month marks the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Is the world a better place now? I don’t think the world has become a better

place in the last 10 years, but I don’t want to pin all that on Sept. 11. Are we better off in terms of peace? I don’t think so. Better off in terms of the environment? Absolutely not! Long term threats? No, we’re not. We’re still in two wars, and China’s not been dealt with. In terms of Sept. 11, we, at a terrible price, have prevented another terrorist attack. We do need to recognize that. Ed Case: olde fashioned book reader How do you define that “terrible price? Al Qaeda directly led us into a war in Afghanistan. I think we had to do that. It indirectly led us into war in Iraq. We’ve spent one to two trillion dollars on those wars. And that’s what we know about. We finish up by asking all candidates what they read. What do you read? I read a lot of biography and history. I love reading about leaders, why things happen. Right now I’m reading War by Sebastian Junger and How the Irish Saved Civilization. I haven’t converted to electronic stuff—I still read books. There’s something claustrophobic about sitting there with a device. It’s a little uncomfortable. I just want to thumb

the thing, though I’m sure I’ll switch at some point. I also read the Economist and Christian Science Monitor—stuff I hope is more objective. National Geographic, too. This article is part of an occasional series in which candidates for public office sit down with the MauiTime editorial board. Candidates should send an email to editor@mauitime.com for more information. ■anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1513n1

Talk of the Island

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO $$$hhhh...

A LITTLE HUBRIS NEVER HURT ANYONE, RIGHT? Didya watch the president’s speech the other night? The one where he proposed $447 billion in tax breaks and job creation stimulus spending? Look, I don’t know if any of that will work—the fact that the far larger stimulus program passed a couple years ago didn’t really dent the nation’s jobless numbers could be due to it’s being based on bad economics or simply that it was actually too small to do any good. But what I do know is that Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie saw the speech, and really stepped up his political game accordingly. Though he did start out a bit slow. “The President’s priorities are our priorities—creating jobs through modernizing infrastructure and investing in people, Abercrombie said in a prepared statement

released Sept. 8. And that’s exactly the kind of conciliatory meaninglessness we would expect from a career politician. But then Abercrombie hit the throttle with subtle menace. “In Congress, there is division and discord, Abercrombie said in the press release. “Here in Hawai`i, everyone—from business to labor, the Legislative and Executive Branch—can come together around our New Day Plan. Whoa! I had no idea Abercrombie’s plan (which was actually redone last month to take into account criticism that it was too dependent on federal spending) had become accepted by all. I had no clue Abercrombie’s proposals to spend billions on local infrastructure had brought peace in our time. And we were all worried about Maui’s 7.3 percent unemployment rate, to say nothing of Molokai’s 14.7 percent jobless rate. Silly us!

THE PERILS OF WRITING ON MAUI For those of you reading this online, either at Mauitime.com or our news blog Mauifeed.com, I would just like to say thanks. Seriously, thank you. There is a lot online competing for your attention, and it’s heartening to us here at the paper that you would take time to read us. I mention this because on Sept. 12 Nielsen—yes, the media analysis firm that gave us television ratings—released their State of the Media: The Social Media Report. Just 12 pages and packed with colorful infographs, it’s nonetheless a sobering look at what people are doing online. “Social networks and blogs continue to dominate Americans’ time online, now accounting for nearly a quarter of total time spent on the Internet, states the report. “Americans spend more time on Facebook than they do on any other U.S. website. Social networks and blogs dwarf everything else online—including porn. According to the report, 23 percent of Americans’ time online is spent at Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, MySpace and a host of other sites (exactly how much time is spent surfing Internet porn isn’t made explicit in the report: “adult matters fall into 35 percent that constitutes “other on the breakdown of Internet time). As for “current events and global news— you know, how people like me make a living—that takes up a mere 2.6 percent of Internet users’ time. Meaning that if a person spends, say, five hours online in a day, a bit less than eight minutes of that time went to reading news. And who knows how much time is spent reading books online. Like porn, books fall into “other on the time breakdown. Whereas porn is one of the more popular “other Internet activities (just behind something called “multi-category entertainment), books fall near the middle of the list, be-

tween “multi-category travel and “multicategory home & fashion. Speaking of books, on Sunday, Sept. 11, The Maui News ran a front page story on that great disaster of our time: the publication of Maggie Goes on a Diet. I am—of course—being satirical: though the controversy over the book is now very much national news, Maggie is actually just a gentle tale (Self-published! By a guy in Paia!) of a girl who learns to love herself through the act of living healthy. Of course people are going to misconstrue it as an abomination, a cruel, heartless knife in the heart of all things good and Godfearing and American. I mean, you could just read the book and find out for yourself that it shows kids the value of hope and self-esteem, but where’s the fun in that? It’s much easier to go online and be a troll and send one of the thousand mostly negative emails author Paul Kramer said he’s received. Because that’s apparently what everyone’s doing online these days. To be honest, I’m personally biased on this subject. As a newly minted fiction writer (my Maui novel Small Island is now available in trade paperback form at Amazon.com for the low, low price of $14.95!) I’m very sensitive to any talk about how Americans just don’t read very much anymore. The other day I walked by Borders Express in the Queen Kaahumanu Center and actually shuddered when I saw the now-shuttered bookstore—the last such Maui store dedicated to the selling of books left south of Lahaina. You know, there is something lonely and terrifying about finally climbing the mountain known as “Getting Published, only to find that no one in the village below really gives a damn. ■anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1513n2

HELPING MOMS IN HAWAII Esme Infante Nii, founder of the MomsInHawaii.com network, is on Maui to host a meet-and-greet to foster more inter-island participation. The even takes place at the Dairy Road McDonald’s in Kahului at 10:30am this Friday, Sept. 16. “In the nearly five years that I’ve been building online communities for moms in the Islands, I’ve seen amazing things happen: Moms helping each other with priceless advice and real-life support, especially when it comes to the brand-new moms with their questions and anxieties,” says Infante Nii. “Moms raising thousands of dollars for charity. Moms turning their lives around with the information or connections they find within the local moms network, or giving others a hand up, or working to make their families and their communities better and stronger. By joining a network like this, moms become part of something bigger than themselves.” Before Moms in Hawaii, Infante Nii was involved in the Hawaii.momslikeme.com effort for the Honolulu Advertiser, which was shut down when the paper merged with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin last year.

Esme Infante Nii

Some of the services and topics offered on the MomsInHawaii.com site are building friendships, sharing support, talking about pregnancy, parenting, health and food, shopping, local articles and live

chats with doctors. Infante Nii says that the site is breaking ground with a new business model that strongly focuses on helping moms. It’s sponsored by big companies like Meadow Gold Dairies Hawaii, McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii and The Queen’s Medical Center (more such sponsors are expected soon). The site also displays exactly zero banner ads and runs no paid advertorials. “Through our sponsorship, Moms In Hawaii is able to provide the content for the Keiki and Family Activity Page, which offers information about local events, listed by island,” says Linda Rosario, a McDonald’s

Maui restaurant owner. “In addition to supporting Moms in Hawaii, we also continue to support numerous organizations that promote the well being of our families and keiki. Initiatives such as Children and Youth Day, which has grown to have celebrations on Oahu and Maui, has been one of our largest sponsorships for more than five years now. Other important initiatives we support for our keiki is the Hawaii State Library Summer Reading Program, Walk Wise Hawaii pedestrian safety campaign and the Fire Department’s Fire Safety Guide program.” Moms In Hawaii’s ultimate goal is to bring mothers together, both online and “in real life,” and thus help them get the information and support they need to keep their families and themselves happy and healthy. The first 25 moms to register to be a part of Moms In Hawaii will get a gift pack. Friday’s event will include a Ronald McDonald appearance, games and prizes. Kids are invited, of course. For more information, visit www.momsinhawaii.com, or follow them on Twitter (@_MomsInHawaii) and Facebook (Facebook.com/MomsInHawaii). ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso

NEWS OF THE WEIRD BY CHUCK SHEPARD

ATOMIC CRIME! Richard Handl, 31, was arrested in southern Sweden in July after a raid on his home. He had been trying for months to set up a nuclear reactor in his kitchen, but became alarmed when a brew of americium, tritium and beryllium created a nuclear meltdown on his stove. Only then, he said, did it occur to him to ask the country’s Radiation Authority if what he was doing was legal, and the subsequent police raid answered that question. No dangerous radiation level was detected, but Handl still faces fines and a maximum two-year prison sentence for unauthorized possession of nuclear materials.

MMM... SNAIL MUCUS The fashion designer Chandrashekar Chawan recently created gold-plated, diamond-studded contact lenses that make eyes “sparkle” (not always a good thing, admitted Chawan, citing reviews calling the look “cringeworthy” and “demonic”). According to an MSNBC report, the “bling” part never actually touches the cornea. And among the trendiest avant garde beauty treatments are facial applications made from snail mucus, according to a July report by London’s Daily Mail. South Korean glamour consultants were the first to use mollusk extract’s generous moisturizing properties, though a dermatologist warned (on NBC’s Today show) that no “controlled” studies have yet demonstrated snail-goo superiority.

GOVERNMENT INACTION The highest-paid state government employee in budget-strapped California in 2010 was among the least productive workers in the system, according to a Los Angeles Times investigation reported in July. Jeffrey Rohlfing is on the payroll as a surgeon in the state prison system (base pay: $235,740), but he has been barred from treating inmates for the last six years because supervisors believe him to be incompetent. Last year, Dr. Rohlfing earned an additional $541,000 in back pay after he successfully appealed his firing to the state’s apparently easily persuaded Personnel Board. Currently, Dr. Rohlfing is assigned records-keeping duties.

NO, THANKS! Colorado inmate Daniel Self filed a federal law-

suit in July against the Sterling Correctional Facility because prison personnel saved his life. They revived him after he had stopped breathing from an attack of sleep apnea, but he contends he had previously demanded to officials that he never be resuscitated, preferring to die rather serve out his life sentence. (2) Terry Barth complained to hospital officials that he was “kidnapped” by paramedics and thus cannot be liable for the $40,000 he has been billed by Enloe Medical Center in Chico, Calif., where he was brought by ambulance following a motorcycle crash in August 2010. Barth said he had insisted at the scene that paramedics not take him to a hospital because he had no medical insurance. (Paramedics are legally required to take anyone with a serious head injury.)

ll year I watered and fertilized my mango tree. I knocked the bugs off and sprayed each mango lovingly with a home-made elixer of habanero peppers blended in water as a nontoxic pesticide. My mouth was watering as I watched my mangos ripening. So close, so close... Then last week I went outside to see if they were ready and they were GONE! My neighbor says she saw you guys in a green car climbing over the rock wall and stripping my tree of fruit. If you had asked, I gladly would have shared. But now I am looking for you and if I find you, watch out! ■

SUPERMODEL’S SUPERKID HAS SUPER NEEDS Augustin James Evangelista is only four, but he nevertheless has certain financial needs–which amount to about $46,000 a month, according to the child-support request filed by his mother, “supermodel” Linda Evangelista. A Wall Street Journal reporter concluded that the figure is about right for rich kids in New York City, what with needing a driver, designer clothes, aroundthe-clock nannies and various personalized lessons. And soon, according to a consultant-tothe-rich interviewed in August by the Journal, Augustin James will become even more expensive, as he graduates from his exclusive preschool and enters his exclusive kindergarten.

The first published instance of a woman’s nipple appearing on the sole of her foot was noted in a 2006 report in the journal Dermatology and reprised in a series of U.S. and British press reports in July 2011. The reporting physicians, led by Dr. Delio Marques Conde, acknowledged that out-of-place breast tissue, while extremely rare, has shown up before on the back, shoulder, face and thigh. The foot nipple was “well-formed,” with areola and sebaceous glands. ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1513n4

Can Maui reprogram itself into the next Silicon Valley? The idea isn’t as crazy as you might think By Jacob Shafer 101010010101100010110101001010110001011010100101011000101101011001010110010010101100100101011000010101100

OOKING AROUND THE ROOM, it was hard to separate the millionaires—and billionaires—from the kitesurfers. Partly because, in many cases, they were one and the same. “Thanks for being here everybody,” Bill Tai told the assembled crowd, seated under slowly rotating ceiling fans in the cramped yet-sunny meeting room of the Maui Country Club in Spreckelsville. With his broad, tanned face and casual attire, Tai looked every bit the laid-back waterman. A venture partner at Charles River Ventures with millions of dollars at his disposal, he’s also the co-founder of MaiTai Kite Camp, which marked its fifth year on Maui in May. The event is held here because of the island’s unreal kiting conditions, but it draws a who’s who of Silicon Valley

heavyweights. The discussion panel at the Country Club included Trip Adler, a 27-year-old Harvard grad and founder of the document-sharing site Scribd; Eric Sutton, co-founder of the mobile video service Tango.me; and Tom Katis, a former U.S. Special Forces op who got the idea for Voxer, a “walkie talkie” application that combines voice, photo and text features, while serving in Afghanistan. All three discussed the parallels between startups and kiting: the thrill, the danger and—if you’re lucky and good enough—the payoff. “Kiteboarding is not the easiest sport to learn—it takes dedication, it’s scary,” MaiTai co-founder Susi Mai (yes, Bill’s last name is “Tai” and Susi’s last name is “Mai” – thus the

“MaiTai” name was born) said after the panel. “Same thing with startups. You start a company from your garage, you’re struggling to make it. It takes the same sort of commitment and risk-taking.” MaiTai is clearly, as one attendee put it, “more about play than work.” But for those plugged into the tech scene, it’s a significant networking opportunity. As Sutton remarked with a wry smile, “Most of my investors are in the audience.” For years activists and politicians have given lip-service to diversifying our economy and getting off the wobbly threelegged stool of tourism, military infrastructure and agriculture. For all the talk, not much has actually happened. Could a tech economy be the answer? Seems implausible on a tiny island thousands of miles from anywhere. But then again, so is the idea of a roomful of kitesurfers changing the digital world. 001010110001

HE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS have been, for a long time, a node on the infrastructure of the Web,” said Tai, citing trans-Pacific cables that connect the Mainland and Asia, success stories like the Web-hosting company Digital Island (which was founded in Hawaii) and

local resources including the Maui High Performance Computing Center in Kihei. “The potential is there.” However, Tai cautions, “what’s missing here and everywhere else is the nucleus of people to make it happen. “There have been many countries that have tried to recreate Silicon Valley—whether it’s Japan, or Singapore, or Taiwan—with billions of dollars,” said Tai. “And they’ve been successful to some extent, but it’s been hard for another Silicon Valley to appear anywhere else.” That could change soon. Unlike the early days of the Web—or even a few years ago—tech startups are exceptionally nimble. “As long as you have an Internet connection, you can start a company,” said Tai. “The people on the panel

startups between 2007 and 2009. Meanwhile, Gowalla—the fast-growing service that allows users to “check in” via location-based geotagging—proudly trumpets its San Antonio, Texas headquarters, while the social networking platform TweetDeck—which recently sold for $30 million—is based in London. “There are visible startups happening all over the world now,” said Tai. And, he added, getting a few to make the trek to Maui might not be that hard. “Attach a bunch of servers to the Maui supercomputer center so there’s a free hosting place for people under a certain size, and if they hire [locally] you give them some more servers,” Tai suggested. “Which pair of 20-year-olds with good coding skills at some computer science school would turn down an offer to come hang out in Maui and run their service for free? You would at least get a bunch of people to launch. And as long as it started to work, so long as you had enough of a base of talent, there’s no reason to leave.” Another, related option is to establish “co-working” spac-

Powers said. “This requires attracting software developers and founders to Maui so they can create and build companies here. We then have to attract local and mainland mentors and investors to support them. I know many people don’t like the idea of bringing more people to Maui and I can understand that, but if Maui wants to create higher paying jobs, we have to start with the people with those skills, connections and track records of building and selling start-ups.” According to Powers, the Founder Institute has opened more than 15 new chapters all over the world in less than two years. He said county officials--including Arakawa-have been “very supportive” and he hopes to launch the first program in the spring of 2012. Aspiring local founders and developers that want to apply to the inaugural program can sign up at www.StartUpMaui.com. “What we need right now is for someone to donate 3,000 to 5,000 square feet of space in Wailuku or Kahalui for one to two years as a home for the co-working space.” Powers said. “This could be empty retail space, warehouse or office space.

“Maui is exciting to me because it has the ability to attract the best software developers in the world.” - Keith Powers 01011010100101011000101101010010101100010110101001010110001011010110010101100100101011001001010110000101

SusiMai Kitesurfing could have started their companies anywhere. All they really needed were a few people willing to stay in one place and code. Those people could have been [at] Harvard or Stanford—or on Maui.” Sounds great, but there are hurdles. First, there’s the lack of resources. During MaiTai, some attendees complained that there weren’t even enough wireless hotspots on-island (Whole Foods in Kahului offers free Wi-Fi, but doesn’t allow people to plug in their laptops). And even if you manage to log on, Hawaii consistently ranks near the bottom of the heap in Internet speed. Then there’s our university system, which lacks a robust computer science program. (As Tai put it, “you want the next Mark Zuckerberg to be coding here in his dorm room.”) And finally, there’s the state’s reputation for being tough on businesses. “The challenge for the Administration here is to make it known they’re entrepreneur friendly, and set up infrastructure accordingly. Whether it’s tax incentives, facilities—those kind of things matter,” said Tai. So far, Mayor Alan Arakawa has at least said the right things. He talked about luring tech startups to Maui during the 2010 campaign, and in a May interview with a Forbes reporter covering MaiTai, Arakawa said Maui’s appeal as a vacation destination makes it an ideal place to connect professionally. “A lot of people of the age of the Silicon Valley group like to come here,” he said. “And at the same time you vacation, you can do a lot of business.” When asked about the high cost of shipping goods to and from the islands, Arakawa replied, “There’s no cost to [ship] concepts and ideas.” It’s a good line, but ideas don’t generate themselves. You’ve still got to attract the talent. 001010110001

S

ILICON VALLEY REMAINS SYNONYMOUS with all things tech, but many have found freedom—and success—elsewhere. “In Silicon Valley, you’re a small fish in a huge pond, and it didn’t seem as collaborative and a lot more corporate,” entrepreneur Chad McGimpsey told The New York Times last year, in a story about Boulder, Colorado’s burgeoning startup scene. “Here, you’re a big fish in a small pond. Plus, there are mountains.” The same story cited statistics that show venture capitalists funneled nearly $2 billion into more than 200 Colorado

es—rooms or entire buildings where creative people can hang out and work for free with the basic tools they need— an idea that’s gained popularity in the Bay Area and elsewhere. Beyond that, there are what’s known as “incubator” and “accelerator” programs, where aspiring entrepreneurs gain skills, knowledge and, potentially, funding. Basically, startup college. At the forefront of that movement is the Founder Institute, whose stated goal is to “globalize Silicon Valley.” Founded by self-described “serial entrepreneur” Adeo Ressi, the Institute now has off shoots on four continents. Could a future off shoot happen here? “Adeo is a close friend and I approached him last fall about opening a Maui chapter of the Founder Institute.” said Keith Powers, a part-time island resident, entrepreneur and start-up specialist (who also recently co-founded The Aloha Initiative with his wife Michiko, as well as Maui County’s Managing Director Keith Regan and his wife and local community leader Lynn Araki-Regan). “Maui is a paradise, but in order to thrive economically and provide great jobs and future opportunities for generations to come, Maui has to diversify its economic base now. Maui needs to become a software hub. It can do that by leveraging its natural resources and providing incentives to attract some of the best software developers and founders in the world. It is also important to remember that software is more than just ‘websites.’ I highly recommend everyone reads Marc Andreessen’s recent oped in the Wall Street Journal-‘Why Software Is Eating The World’ [Aug. 20, 2011] he artfully articulates that software powers everything. Yes everything. From online services, mobile devices, movies making, agriculture tech, organic farming, robotics, 3D Printing, sensors, financial services, and tourism to national defense – software is everywhere and it will drive innovation and jobs.” Of course, Powers said locating tech start-ups on Maui-and in Hawaii--is far from simple. “Being an isolated island provides an amazing attraction, but it also creates some challenges,” said Powers. “The biggest challenge is the chicken and egg problem. Everyone would love Google and Facebook to open offices on Maui and hire lots of people, but the reality is that there currently aren’t enough developers on Maui to support the costs related to opening satellite offices.” Powers said two things need to happen before any startup gets going. “First, we need to open a co-working space where people on Maui can work and nurture start up ideas,” Powers said. “This co-working space could also provide a home for groups like ‘Maui Makers’ [mauimakers.com] and ‘TedxMaui’ [tedxmaui.com]. I believe the best place for this co-working space would be in Wailuku or Kahalui as part of an effort to also bring more jobs to downtown.” That’s simple enough. As for his second precondition... “Second, we need to foster a start-up ecosystem on Maui,”

If one of your readers has four empty retail spaces sitting next to each other—this would be a great way to bring some new energy to that area. We will work with a local non-profit partner to help us facilitate donations and to manage this effort. We also need angel investors, retired CEOs, professionals and professors, law firms, airlines, hotels and other service providers who want to help build this ecosystem. For Powers, all of this isn’t just smart business–it’s smart living. “This is very personal to me,” he said. “I want my fiveyear-old daughter Harmony and all of Maui’s Keiki to have choices and opportunities when they grow up. Choices and opportunities here on Maui.” 001010110001

T

HOUGH SOME WILL QUESTION whether Maui, with its laconic vibe, would be a good fit for the lightening quick world of tech startups, the two may be closer than they appear. Consider Constantin Bisanz. Blonde and bronzed in a T-shirt and ratty shorts, Bisanz doesn’t look like a guy who started his first company at age 14 and today pals around with billionaire Richard Branson. But he is. Bisanz is a passionate Austrian kitesurfer who sold just his last company to eBay for over $200 Million. He is also an adventure seeker and recently broke several world records by kiting across the 50-mile, ice-choked Bering Straight (an undertaking he now admits was “a bit crazy”) When we caught up with him at MaiTai, he expressed no doubt that Maui can mold itself into a tech hub—and draw top talent from around the world. “Everybody wants to be in a nice place,” he said. “Maybe not all of them full time, but you don’t need them all of them full time. And everybody is happy to come [to Maui].” Further, he said that there are benefits to connecting on a board rather than in a boardroom. “If you meet these people not [only] during workshops and formally set up meetings, but also on the water, kitesurfing, and you’re high-fiving and then you share your experience—it’s just a deeper relationship,” he said. Of course, it’s easy to be optimistic when the sun is shining, the surf is up and you’ve already made your fortune. Building a community—and a culture—where others can replicate that success takes time and effort, and there’s no guarantee it’ll pan out. Then again, risk is the name of the game. “It takes one stroke to get on the wave,” Tai said, “and this is a big wave.” ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1513l

Not Your Usual Mexican Taco Del Mar’s Maui location serves up fat burritos BY JEN RUSSO

aco Del Mar is not your usual fast food joint. Nothing on the menu is fried, and they offer whole grain and vegan options. Hungry folks, look no further if you want a big meal. They have plenty to fill your belly without breaking the bank—the mondo burrito is probably the classic example. You won’t find a drive-thru here—their brick and mortar restaurant is sandwiched between 31 Flavors and Thai Cuisine in the Maui Mall—but the bright and clean dining room is worth parking for. They have Wi-Fi for customers, air conditioning, free refills and daily specials. The menu is a build-your-own Mexican meal, like a cross between a deli and a taqueria. This style of burrito-making was the brainchild of Latino culture in the Mission district of San Francisco many years ago, but has since exploded nationwide. Taco Del Mar’s first store opened in Seattle’s waterfront district, where the owners were influenced by their college travels in

recent five-year stint at the Grand Wailea’s front offices. “I have always wanted to run my own business,” he told me. “It has been a goal of mine for the past twenty years. I have been following what kind of new franchises are coming available on the market. I came close to opening a Subway a few years ago, but it didn’t work out.” He

Now Taco Del Mar is 200 restaurants strong, with locations in Hawaii, the West Coast and Florida. Franchise Brands recently completed acquisition of Taco Del Mar, adding them to their Subway holdings. Mark Weiss, the Maui location’s owner, is not your usual entrepreneur, either. His background spans working for mom & pop joints, fast food chains like Domino’s and a

added that it’s critical to have persistence — indeed, he works the line in his restaurant nearly everyday. On the Thursday I dropped by it was already getting busy at 11am. Early lunch diners were ordering the meat quesadilla on special for $5.49, and I saw employees making plenty of their signature mondo burritos, too.

You start your order by choosing your wrap, taco shell or flavor of tortilla. Then you choose proteins (or lack of), veggies, sauces and then watch it all get wrapped up in a tidy package. After that, well, you eat it. The list of ingredients is huge: black beans, pinto beans, refried beans, Spanish rice, seasoned pork carnitas, shredded beef, braised chicken, ground beef, fish, sautéed peppers and onions (fajita style) make up the warm stuff. Then there’s shredded lettuce, chopped cabbage, pico de gallo, various salsas, guacamole, enchilada sauce, shredded cheese and sour cream. They are really flexible with how you want your fillings. You can have two types of beans, if you like, or two kinds of meat. It’s up to you. Their daily deals are great. On Sunday kids eat free, meaning you get one free kid’s meal with every adult meal purchase. They also have a punch card promo: for every $5 you spend, you get punched, and after 10 punches you get $5 off your meal (Mondays you get double punches for your meal). On Tuesdays, they offer a taco meal for $7.99. On Wednesdays, all platters are $7.49. On Thursdays, meat-filled quesadillas go for $5.49. On Fridays, two fish tacos go for $5, and on Saturdays meat nachos are $7.99. Also, after 6pm all Mondo burritos go for $6 and platters are $6.50 after 5pm. Weiss said he’d like to see this Taco Del Mar see the same success enjoyed by the Honolulu and Kona restaurants, and perhaps open more. After all, he said that the best part of being an entrepreneur is “the sky is the limit.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso

OakHeart Bacardi’s Spiced Rum Hits the Hawaii Market arket BY Y JEN RUSSO

acardi has long dominated inated the rum market, and hass built itself as one of the most recognizable names in that particuarticular brand. They have been en prolific and fearless in the past decade on releasing new rums, from the very first one, Bacardi acardi Limon, in 1995, when flavored vodkas were all the rage, to last year’s Torched Cherry. This year’s new release is OakHeart and it is Bacardi’s first spiced rum. They will be going head-to-head with Captain Morgan’s, n’s, the brand that has famously held the top spot in this category. “This is the biggest launch in a decade for Bacardi,â€? says Sommer Meyer, Hawaii Regional Sales Manager. “It is our first entrance into the spice category and we could rands. not be happier. We love to launch brands. The challenge is always to live up the expectations that you are given and make it fun.â€? di SuOakHeart is a blend of their Bacardi k with perior and Gold, aged in charred oak special spices. You can taste notes of vanilla, anilla, h and caramel and pepper. It’s very smooth can be served on the rocks or neat. Spiced e, and rum is traditionally served with Coke, acardi Oak and Coke is no exception, with Bacardi hoping that catches on as a household name. Their launch is set nationally forr this argest Thursday, Sept. 15 at 5pm. It’s the largest effort by Bacardi for a new brand. A trip to ge featheir Facebook Bacardi Oakheart page tures a countdown to the minute off their events across the country. Catch the Maui launch parties at Lulu’s in Lahaina att 5pm m. or Three’s Bar and Grill in Kihei at 5pm. Given that its trendy label sportss serious masculine appeal, it’s clear that Oakds the Heart’s marketing is aimed towards young male drinker. So far I have found Oakheart at Aloha 0-$23. Wash Your Hands! Contagion will leave you breathless BY BARRY WURST II

Contagion

T

he monster virus that attacks its hosts in Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion is a fast, nasty, invisible killer and we witness all too clearly what it can do to the human body. A stunned husband (Matt Damon) watches his infected wife (Gwyneth Paltrow) suffer a massive headache, followed by a violent seizure and a painful, shuddering death. Over the course of a few days, it spreads everywhere, with the only survivors on total house arrest while the rest of the population madly loots and riots. Even in-the-know scientists and powerful bureaucrats (embodied by Kate Winslet and Laurence Fishburne) are held back by vaccine hold-ups and are horrified by the virus’ speed and accrued body count. The only way to feel comfortable while watching Contagion is by going to the movie theater dressed in a HAZMAT suit. This

LIKE OUTBREAK, BUT W/O MONKEYS globe-trotting, large scale horror show is the first big budget viral attack thriller since Outbreak and ably taps into every paranoid fear you have regarding deadly airborne cooties. One of the most uncomfortable experiences of my movie-going life was when I caught Outbreak roughly 15 years ago at the Kaahumanu Theater. There’s an unforgettable, audacious sequence in that film where someone coughs in a movie theater and, aided by some simple f/x, we see the airborne virus float through the theater and latch onto another doomed victim. Nothing in Contagion is equally outra-

registers strongly as well. Best of all is Jude Law–terrific and fired up as a controversial, online reporter who fearlessly covers the worldwide devastation. The sight of Law, wearing a protective bubble suit, casually walking through an empty San Francisco, is one of my favorite movie moments of the year. Much of the cast is either not wearing make-up or filmed in an unflattering light, an effective way to make even the glamorous Winslet appear less a movie star. After a few hit and miss art films, Soderbergh has made his first big studio movie since Ocean’s Thirteen and his sharp, intelligent and stylish eye makes this feel queasily believable. This is a highly effective thriller, so be warned: you’ll be thinking about who breathed on your popcorn and will wash your hands as soon as the end credits roll. The final scene (like much of the movie overall) is guaranteed to leave audiences walking away feeling totally uneasy. ■

geous and the film isn’t as good as the far more formulaic but scarier Outbreak. Yet, I confess that many of the audience members attending the packed Contagion screening were coughing throughout, which made me clam up into the fetal position. This movie will crawl under your skin (not literally, thankfully) and give audiences some serious chicken skin. The screenplay is full of good dialogue and juicy scenes for its large cast, but there are also far too many characters and at least one unnecessary subplot, involving a kidnapping, that goes nowhere. There’s also a character that is seemingly set up to be Winslet’s nemesis but just vanishes from the film, either a case of lazy screenwriting or brutal editing. The tension isn’t fully sustained until the very end, but the best scenes are the stuff of nightmares. The all-star cast seems to be a nod to the star-studded Irwin Allen disaster films of the 1970’s. Only Elliot Gould feels jarringly out of place. Damon has a tough role and makes his everyman recognizable, Fishburne and John Hawkes are dependably great and Winslet

NEW THIS WEEK DRIVE - R - Action - With such an underrated profession, it makes sense that a stuntman might moonlight as a wheelman. Mad skills are mad skills, after all. But it also makes sense that being complicit in crime might upend said stunt/wheelman’s life... Starring Ryan Gosling. 100 min. I DON’T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT - PG 13 Comedy? - We don’t know why you’d want to see this flick. Sarah Jessica Parker stars as a harried breadwinner. 89 min. THE LION KING - G - Animated - Brainworm lyrics, “Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba! (Sithi uhm ingonyama!) echo in my head every time I see the sunrise or think of Michael Jackson dangling his baby off of a Berlin balcony. This modern Disney classic’s reissuance in 3D reminds us how the circle of life moves us all–through despair and hope, through faith and... OK. I’ll stop. 89 min. STRAW DOGS - R - Thriller - A remake of the heady 1971 film that starred Dustin Hoffman and Susan George. But instead of following a relocated-to-the-UK mathematician and his wife’s plight, James Marsden and Kate Bosworth now lead as a Dirty South-bound (via Los Angeles) pair whose escalating tensions reach a breaking point. 110 min.

It’s In The Bag

Get the Drift?

F

or Earth, one mean solar day (awesomely, “mean solar day” sounds like panegyric Pidgin–especially with the adjective “one”–but it’s actually a scientific term), takes about 86,400 seconds. On Saturday (Sept. 17), in just around the time it takes the planet to complete an axial rotation, humans will have completed a revolution of their own. That’s because this weekend marks another installment of the annual “Get the Drift and Bag It” campaign, the world’s largest volunteer effort for ocean health. If this year’s turnout follows last year’s numbers, nearly nine million conscientious citizens from 152 countries will convene at their local waterways to remove 145 million pounds of rubbish from the shores of lakes, streams, rivers and the ocean–all in a single day. Contributing to this, thanks to the coordination efforts of Community Work Day Program (CDW), last year in Maui Nui, over 1,000 volunteers collected 13,200 pounds of litter–including an estimated 1,800 plastic bags, 2,150 recyclable beverage containers, and 7,600 cigarette butts. That’s a ton of crap! (Actually, it’s closer to seven tons of crap.) It goes without saying that the trouble with all this trash goes beyond shoal aesthetic, and that the im-

petus of a cleanup is to mitigate the myriad ways our wanton waste is lethal to marine life. This was illustrated quite literally at last year’s event when debris-seeking divers combing reefs near Mala Wharf rescued both a lobster and an eel from entanglement and certain death. And it will turn your stomach to see how much organpumiced plastic is cut from the guts of dead seabirds (by scientists, not at the cleanup, of course)—animals who’ve starved to death, their entrails filled with our indigestible excess. Exhumed lighters, bottle caps and bits of other crap are turned into (rather beautiful) mosaics, and these startling images of our waste—and worse, what happens to it—are effective teaching tools for groups like the Surfrider Foundation, one of the groups that’s partnered with CDW to sponsor the event. Other stellar local supporters include Hana Trash Club, Positive H20, Maui Rents, Tropic Water and Quicksilver. Mauians interested in participating in this global cleanup have four on-isle meeting locations to choose from this Saturday: Waipuilani Park (S. Kihei Rd.); Hana Beach Park (Hana Bay); Hoaloha Park (near First Hawaiian Bank in the Kahului Harbor area); and Kahekili Beach Park (65 Kai Ala Dr., Kaanapali). Plus, additional events will take place on Sunday (Sept. 18) at Kamehameha Iki Park (575 Front St., La-

haina) and on Sunday, Oct. 16 at Baldwin Beach Park (Hana Hwy., Paia). All events run 9am-1pm. Cleanup supplies are provided by CDW, but savvy volunteers are encouraged to bring their own reusable gloves, bags and buckets (personally, I like using long BBQ tongs), as well as refillable water bottles. For more information about how you can help, call CDW at 877-2524 or e-mail info@cwdhawaii.org. ■

The BE’s Knees Friday (Sept. 16.) 6pm, Iao Theater (68 N. Market St., Wailuku); free In her latest original, The Garden of BE, hip local playwright Tess Cartwright has created an avant garde “world where everything is alive from rocks to birds, a belching volcano and even colors.” This Friday (Sept. 16) marks the beginning of audiences’ journey into this whimsical realm with The Garden of BE Art Show, created in partnership with Community Work Day Program and in conjunction with the forthcoming play. Locals were invited to submit their original artworks, so long as pieces were created entirely of recycled, reused plastic, and fit a garden theme (i.e. resem-

bling flora, fauna, fairies and what not). At the show, prizes will be awarded to works that demonstrated out-of-the-bottle ways of utilizing diverse textures and types of plastics, and patrons can peruse the collection while getting a glimpse of the show that’s in store… Ooh. Ooh! That reminds me: while you’re hanging out at the art show, be sure to visit the box office to snag tickets for The Garden of BE, which opens next Friday (Sept. 23 through Oct. 2; running Fridays and Saturdays, 7:30pm; and Sundays, 3pm; $40/$22/$15/$10). Replete with interesting symbology—sourcing from everything from peace signs to ancient runes—the musical is a color-saturated exploration of loving transformation (which all began some 15 years ago with a bleach bottle puppet named Bud Burrid). For an in-depth primer, check out mewe-creations.com.

Tita-llating Friday (Sept. 16), 10pm, Casanova (1188 Makawao Ave.); free Maui maven Kathy Collins is so cool. She’s everything from Mana`o Radio’s mama, to tap dancing queen, to da Tita entreating us not fo’ littah. Whether on the airwaves, stage or bumper stickers, Collins is ever-effervescent, bold and bodacious. This Friday (Sept. 16) she’s celebrating her birthday with a big bash at Upcountry’s Casanova—but she’s the one doling out the gifts. See, she’s commissioned her pals The 8 Track Players to headline the night—and there’s no cover, complements of the birthday girl. The 8 Track Players—a fun and funky five-man ensemble comprised of Jerry Byer, Phil Ellison, Chris Limos, Gino Morelli and Curtis Williams—have got a knack for lighting a fire under every happy foot; so the house is sure to be hoppin’ higher than Homer on a tramapoline... Ooh. Ooh! Be sure

Larry David: “I waved to a guy in a Prius and he didn’t wave back.” Jeff Greene: “I don’t wave to people in the same car as me.” Larry David: “We’re Prius drivers. We’re a special breed.” — ‘Wandering Bear,’ Curb Your Enthusiasm (season 4, episode 38; 2004)

L

ook, I don’t expect to find anyone to empathize with me about this—at least not on Maui, where buxom Mana/Whole Foods-fed beach bods abound—but this Taco Belle of the Ball always feel a bit sheepish whenever I’m in a health food store. As a former vegetarian (who even did a stint as a raw foodist), it’s like being presented with the communion tray on an awkward albeit eager Easter Sunday, years after having fallen away from the church. You think it’d do you some good to partake, but you’re not quite sure if you (or anyone else) believes you deserve it. (The power of brown rice compels me to amend that Down to Earth has long been a come-asyou-are sanctuary for me.) Bodily well-being aside, I’ve returned to shopping at health food stores for one big reason: greenwashing. So annoying, right?! As if it wasn’t tough enough trying to be a conscientious consumer before eco-friendly fire, we’ve now got to keep our eye out for manipulative marketing spin that preys upon do-good intentions! I don’t mean to say that health food stores allow you to shop blindly, but for whatever reason, I certainly feel more confident in impulse-buying 365 Everyday Value products than I do Walmart’s Green Works. Anyway, all this got me thinking about more than just what I’m consuming, but how. (PS: Good news! I suspect I’m not alone in having mastered the whole no plastic bags thing, though my arsenal of reusable bags is getting a little out of hand. I’ve got everything from petite boutique-sizes to provisions-stocking saddle packs; insulated, perforated, decorated—you name it...) So, ever late to the party, I finally started carrying around one of those metal water bottle things (which also means I finally started drinking water). I scored it a few months ago after volunteering at one of Community Work Day Program’s beach cleanups; and I’m damned thankful because I never would’ve bought one for myself otherwise. See, my catawampus priorities being what they are, it’s not that I didn’t want a metal water bottle thing (I did), or that I didn’t understand the various values of metal water bottle things (I do), but the pressure of purchasing just the right design—a design that might perma-

nently broadcast my aesthetic sensibilities to the entire Metal Water Bottle Thing Community (neigh, the world!)—was just to much to bear. Flowers? Nope. Too girly. Flourishes? Nuh-uh. So last year. Plain? Um, what’s that?! Turns out, my cheapness trumps my consecration to color—and a patternless, plain metal water bottle thing is (ironically) perfect when it’s free. But my favorite thing about it is the little aluminum climbing clip attached to its top. With that, I can hook dat buggah on anything (i.e. my purse, backpack— which is everything)! Hmm... What other rubbish-vanquishing tools can I climbing-clip to my bag? Well, if metal water bottle things are important because water’s essential for survival (but one-time use containers are nonsensical), coffee’s inextricable from the conversation, too. So, I clipped a ceramic coffee cup to my purse. And if ‘opala-picking is a favorite pastime of mine, I ought to also attach my trash-picking tongs. (Tongs? Yep. Not just for BBQs or centipede catching, tongs are a super cheap alternative to As Seen on TV’s “Gopher.”) Proudly all clipped up, I felt like frickin’ Captain Planet—until I caught a clanking glimpse of myself in a store window as I walked to work. What the?! I looked like some hipster hobo; a busker gone bonkers; a Ren Faire freak who’d forgotten her era! Oh, how mordant that my effort to reduce should look so excessive! So I thought, this world we’re supposed to save can suck it. I ain’t gonna think seven generations ahead if it means looking foolish. (Obviously I don’t have to stick with the climbing clips, but it’s sometimes hard for me to let go of an idea once I’ve latched on.) Just as I was about to throw in the towel entirely (i.e. the cloth one I’ve been carrying around to avoid wads-o-paper), an earth angel appeared unto me. A dude strolled past— clipped to his own metal water bottle thing (!)—and like waving at the same make and model driving in the opposite lane, he proffered a nice little nod. It was all the encouragement I needed to soldier forth, with my clipped metal water bottle thing, ceramic coffee cup and ‘opala-picking tongs jangling like Hare Krishnas from hell. And you know what happened then? No more paper coffee cups in the rubbish. No more bottles (but for beer) in the recycling. And though I may look and sound sillier, no more being sheepish, either. ■

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS

...to questions on page 6

1. D - South Kihei Rd. between Ohukai and and Lipoa streets

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Unless you’re especially enlightened, letting yourself trust others gets harder every time your trust is broken. That, of course, is hardly fair to the new people in your life, since they have nothing to do with those who deceived you. But fairness is irrelevant. Your heart’s a muscle (both literally and figuratively) and the only way it can become strong and flexible enough to fully recover from a beating is practice and intention. You need to force yourself to trust anyway, despite your trepidation. Yes, you’ll probably get burned again, but that’s better than rejecting someone who’s worthy of your trust because you were too scared to offer it.

It sucks when someone else makes a mess and then leaves you to clean it up, especially without asking if that’s okay (probably because they know it’s not). Instead of harping on about the injustice of it all, which will only piss you off more and get you exactly nowhere, I suggest rolling up your sleeves and fixing this disaster as soon as humanly possible. Yes, it’ll suck, but the sooner you can get it out of your sight, the sooner you’ll be able to move on to actually fun stuff and forget about all this—something that’s simply impossible until it’s gone.

2. G - A, B and C only 3. A - True (though C - What the hell?! is also acceptable)

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Paying tribute to someone’s past, for helping shape them into the person you love, is a sweet thing to do, especially if the experiences that built their character were painful or difficult. However, no one wants to dwell overmuch on their traumatic history. I think almost anyone would appreciate your acceptance and recognition, but also be relieved when you return to the present moment, so don’t linger. What you want to convey is that the past matters—but not nearly as much as the present moment. And for that, a very brief visit will do.

When people make it needlessly difficult for you to do a good deed, I can understand your temptation to just say, “Forget it,” and walk away. Since these knuckleheads (who may, after all, only be doing their (lame) jobs) aren’t the ones who’ll suffer without your aid, I hope you push through your frustration and jump through their stupid hoops. Feel free, however, to let all involved know what a pain in the ass it is, and how putting up barriers to altruism isn’t particularly smart. I doubt they’ll respond well to you, so don’t expect it to change anything now. However, they may just reconsider how they address future do-gooders who come along—and then you’ll have done two good deeds.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

Life goes on. Things never really end until you die, even if you think of them as finished. What’s actually happened is that they’ve changed. If you can learn to view them as different (perhaps in dramatic, fundamental ways) from what they were, rather than simply over, you may realize that there’s stuff worth salvaging or recycling from those past chapters which would significantly add to the quality of your life or overall happiness. That’s not to say every closed chapter should be revisited—some aren’t worth dusting off and resurrecting, at this point. But the last couple, at least, you should consider. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Bullies don’t just disappear once they graduate from high school. Some grow up and evolve, but others learn how to disguise their bullying in ever more devious and subtle ways. That doesn’t change what it is, though. Sometimes, as when they’ve acquired real authority (becoming a cop, for example), you may have to bite your tongue and take it, to some extent. However, that’s not the case here. You must reject their shitty power play by calling it what it is. It may not be quite so simple, but just like in elementary school, standing up to a bully is the best way to negate their power (or at least the first step).

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

It’s nice to give someone a warning about a mistake they’re making (or about to), but don’t be too shocked if you discover they’re fully aware of the situation, and making their choices with eyes wide open. People are occasionally self-destructive, addicted to risk, or willfully naïve, and in all of these cases your intervention, while possibly appreciated, isn’t likely to change their behavior right now. Don’t take it personally. Even though it’s hard for you to understand their decisions, it’s also not your call—the only thing you get to decide is whether or not you’ll stick around; the rest is purely their business. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Normally, when you have a problem with someone, I’d suggest going directly to them first, even if it’s harder or more awkward. However, when someone’s grip on rationality and reason isn’t particularly secure, you may have no choice but to go over their head with your difficulties, so they can be addressed without putting a target on your back. Don’t take this cowardly back route unless you’re quite certain it’s necessary, though. However, if you have ample evidence that any attempt at a logical discussion will only make things worse, than do what you’ve got to do. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

People want what they want and you can’t change that. You can get those who care about you to pretend to want stuff they don’t, in order to please you, or do stuff they’re not crazy about. Be careful how far you push this, though. This is a slippery slope into Resentmentville, and you really don’t want to go there. Every relationship has obligations. However, for the happiness and longevity of yours, you should be extremely picky about when and how you call in this type of favor. Chill out and fly solo when necessary, so that when you come back to the nest, it’s not empty.

I can understand how you might envy one of those people who’s able to keep calm, cool, and collected in the midst of circumstances that would have you hysterical, in tears, or pulling your hair (or all three). Having such powerful emotions can be a pain in the ass. I don’t think finding ways to suppress or ignore them is the answer, though—remember, they’re a source of strength, beauty, and compassion for you, even if they also screw up situations, embarrass you, or simply make things awkward. Every Crab must find his or her own way to navigate life with these massive feelings—without denying or hiding them. This is a never-ending process—but you should have ample opportunity to make significant strides towards a more balanced place this week.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

Everyone has flaws. Ideally you’d find someone (or several someones) whose flaws don’t bother you all that much, but it’s pretty unlikely. Learning to live with and actually love someone despite their shortcomings is part of how you’ll get them to do the same for you (because you, my dear, are no exception!). This week, consider all the sterling qualities possessed by those around you, even if they’ve recently been eclipsed by a few glaring faults. I think, if you’re fair and considerate about it, you’ll discover that all the good stuff far outweighs the bad—and living with the whole package may be a better deal than you thought at first.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Sure, trusting your gut has totally screwed you over or gotten you into trouble in the past. Your instincts are just plain wrong, on occasion. But try to remember how second-guessing them has gotten you into many more scrapes and scuffles than trusting them ever could. Yes, your intuition will be completely off-base on occasion. It happens. Throwing out such a powerful tool because of a couple errors would be incredibly foolish, though, especially this week. Trust your gut no matter what. And as for the screwups? Simply write them off as par for the course.
