LINGLE HOLDS GRUDGES? Linda Lingle is still upset that the Supreme Court said she broke the law (Coconut Wireless, Oct. 20, 2011). She told the Chamber [of Commerce] that she wanted to make it more expensive for citizens to sue to prevent corporations from breaking the law (or for governors). Lingle is all about revenge and she holds a grudge against the Sierra Club–but then again it was her own ambition that got her in the mess. THE PALI TUNNEL OF DOOM So the other night I was driving to the other side and noticed for some reason that though there were lights installed in the Pali tunnel, they were not on. Nor could I remember ever seeing them on, at night or any other time. Suddenly terrified of having to drive through the tunnel in the dark (it takes about two seconds at 45 miles per hour, after all), I asked Hawaii Department of Transportation (DOT) spokesman Dan Meisenzahl (formerly of KITV news anchor/reporter fame). According to Meisenzahl, the good news is state workers were out the night of Oct. 22 installing new

lot of improvements to secure the system.” Bastards! Anyway, even though state crews will be working on the lights this weekend, Meisenzahl said not to expect to see them on anytime soon. His reason: something even more unholy than solar panel thieves may interfere with the crews’ work. “After the lights are hung, we will still have a lot of work to do including checking wiring that has been dormant for some years now,” Meisenzahl said. “We do not expect the lights to be operational for a couple of months. We anticipate the crews will probably get pulled off the job along the way as higher priority items come up.” Higher priority items? Terrifying!

lights. But then Meisenzahl told me a dark, haunting tale of just how the lights came to be broken. The whole system, according to Meisenzahl, isn’t actually designed to be used at night. Installed years ago, the lights are for the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians who pass through the tunnel. At either end are push buttons (similar to those at crosswalk intersections) that activate the lights, which are solar-powered. But it seems this isn’t the first time state DOT workers have had to go into the tunnel to repair the lights. In fact, they’ve had to do so on two previous occasions. Apparently, person or persons unknown have been slipping in under the cover of darkness to do nefarious things to the solar panels that power the lights. “The solar panels were stolen not once, but twice,” Meisenzahl told me. “We did a

I was there at the birth–before, even, when the owners were bolting together benches and hanging chalkboards and generally trying to find a way to serve fresh, good food at reasonable prices. The menu ended up being pricey, but they certainly succeeded in serving delicious bowls of rice and noodles, endless plates of tasty potstickers and incredible jaffel sandwiches. The effort they put into the place was nothing short of monumental in my humble opinion, and it showed. I asked part owner Sarah Gray (who goes by the moniker Sarah Sassin in the Maui Roller Girls) why Wokstar was closing. Here’s her response, which deserves to be quoted at length: “I’ve realized this week that closing is sad, but I don’t consider it failure,” Gray wrote. “The lease is up and we don’t make money–those are the boring facts. If we had made profit a larger priority, things may be different. It is disappointing, but I still see it as successful. We wanted to

create a place where all walks of life could sit together and enjoy fresh affordable food. A place that people wanted to work at, that was fun and not contrived. That’s what we did for three and a half years, in a deep recession. Not a bad shot at it. The community response to us closing has been a testament to the value of the place. Some of our regulars are more emotional than me, and I’m touched by the support all the way through the final days. Those are the people that kept us going these last few years and we are grateful.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1519n2

LOCAL PLUGS

HIKI NO Is No Ka Oi We usually hear disappointing reports that Hawaii’s schools are dismally behind those on the mainland, which are dismally behind those in the rest of the world. So it’s awesome to report that Hawaii has the very first Statewide Student News Network in the nation. Called HIKI NO, it airs on PBS Hawaii and is currently in its second season. The 12 participating Maui County schools have been successful in securing a $7,500 grant from the Fred Baldwin Memorial Foundation. This is right on the heels of Balwin High School’s award in September for Best Newswriting on their Season One episode called “Plastic Bag Alternatives.” Roberta Wong Murray, Vice President of Programming and Communications for the locally owned and independent PBS Hawaii station, says they conceptualized the series in 2008 but it took several years to develop. The first season of HIKI NO began in February 2011 with 54 schools and 13 episodes that aired weekly. Episode Three of the second season will air this Thursday, Oct. 27 at 7:30pm. It features Maui High School and includes a moving report from Maui Waena Intermediate School on 442nd Regimental Combat Team veteran Stanley Izumigawa. When asked how the money will be shared among the schools Murray said that “There is no simple way to answer this question. It’s not going to be divvied up by formula. It allows PBS Hawaii to conduct on-site video production training and in some cases, provide the means to fly students from Maui or their island to another island which could be Maui for training. I know that sounds vague, but that’s the simplest answer.” The schools and students currently use their own equipment for videotaping and editing and submit their rough cuts to the PBS Hawaii online platform. PBS Hawaii often consults with the student teams. It’s not unusual to go through many revisions before the students can get an episode approved for broadcast. HIKI NO means “can do” in Hawaiian, and the program’s mission is to help students develop skills in critical thinking, collaboration, problem solving, analysis and communication. “Through the vehicle of producing a weekly news program, students also learn video production skills, newswriting, reporting, information gathering, on-camera presentation, editing and meeting deadlines,” Murray said. “HIKI NO also gives

an on-air voice to students, allowing them to tell stories about their communities that may otherwise not be told.” Any intermediate or high school–public, private, or charter– can participate. There is also one elementary school that is part of the network.

HAGAR HELPS HANA There are many ways in which the Hagar Family Foundation has helped Maui families and now they can add raising money for kids in Hana to that list. The foundation is jumping in on the Hana Youth Center’s “Walk in My Shoes” Campaign by generously offering dollar-for-dollar matches to donations made over the next few months. The Hana Youth Center was busy preparing for their Halloween Haunted House, which starts at 7pm on Halloween, but Director Chris Harrington was able to find a moment to talk about the special circumstances and needs that surround the Hana community.

“The typical visitor to Hana sees lush beauty, a seemingly sleepy little town and incredible beaches,” Harrington said. “However, Hana has a host of challenges like any small community. The temptation of drugs, like crystal meth, is huge here. Employment in Hana can be difficult to find and wages are typically low. Therefore, kids in Hana are not afforded some of the same opportunities as children in bigger communities. Our geographic isolation adds to this. So, though it may seem like paradise to a visitor, there are actually a lot of challenges facing families in Hana.” The population in Hana is around 2,300 and the center serves a membership of 217 youths, ages eight to 18. Hana School, which is severely lacking in funding, is closed on Fridays. The Hana Youth Center was founded in 1986 as a safe, free place where kids in Hana can hang out when school is not in session. It’s currently open everyday after school till 7pm and from 9am to 6pm when school is out. The youth center has evolved into a haven for youth culture in our east community, free of the temptations of drugs and alcohol. “Keoki Kalani, Director of the Youth Center, and John Villiarimo, Assistant Director, are dedicated to the Hana Youth Center. They have the perfect temperament to mentor the kids on a daily basis. They approach their job with the perfect mix of discipline and fun. But most importantly, they realize they are in a position to teach these kids life lessons that can help to make them healthy, happy and socially aware adults. The success of our youth center is largely due to their dedication.” Helping youth to recognize, believe in and follow their talents and gifts is part of the goal of the youth center, which aims to be more than just being a place for kids to hang out. Everyone pitches in to help each other, including raising keiki. Instead of having kids unattended during school hours or breaks, they have a place to gather and participate in healthy, educational activities that are fun. Members of the community support the center and volunteer their time to pass on the Hawaiian traditions that perpetuate the culture like net fishing, weaving, chanting and the hula. ou built a rock wall for me at a fair negotiated price. This was great, except you used way too much sand in the cement. My guess is you wanted to save a few bucks. Thanks! Because just a couple months after you finished, the wall started falling apart. When I asked you to look at it, you said that was the price for that type of wall, and that if I wanted a strong wall it would’ve cost more. You know, I was warned not to hire you, but I didn’t listen. ■

THIS WEEK IN COW NIPPLES London Fashion Week usually brings forth a shock or two from cutting-edge designers, but a September creation by Rachel Freire might have raised the bar: a floor-length dress made from 3,000 cow nipples (designed to resemble roses). Initial disgust for the garment centered on implied animal abuse, but Freire deflected that issue by pointing out that the nipples had been discarded by a tannery and that her use amounted to “recycling.” The 32-year-old Freire, who has worked with mainstream entertainers such as Christina Aguilera, was kept so busy with the animal-abuse angle that she was largely spared having to explain another issue–why anyone would want to wear a dress made with cow nipples.

SOUVENIRS! No sooner had Anthony Sowell been convicted in August of murdering 11 women in Cleveland and burying their remains around his property than entrepreneur Eric Gein of Florida had hired someone to fill sandwich bags of soil from Sowell’s property so that he could sell the souvenir dirt for $25 a gram on the Internet. Gein follows well-publicized salesmen who have famously collected the pubic hair of New York prostitute-killer Arthur Shawcross, the crawlspace dirt from the house of John Wayne Gacy, and the “fried hair” of Ted Bundy–that fell on the floor as he was executed.

WEIRD SCIENCE THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT! Death is big business in Japan, with 1.2 million people a year passing away and overtaxing the country’s cemeteries and crematoriums. With the average wait for disposal at least several days, and space running short in funeral homes, “corpse hotels” have opened in many cities, with climate-controlled “guest rooms” renting for the equivalent of about $155 a night, with viewing rooms where relatives can visit the bodies daily until cremation is available.

BIG BUSINESS The world’s real economy may be flagging, but not necessarily the make-believe economy of online multiplayer games, according to reporting by The Wall Street Journal (July) and the website Singularity Hub (August). For example, entrepreneur Ailin Graef’s Anshe Chung Studios is worth “millions” of real U.S. dollars, earned mostly by managing rentals of make-believe real estate and brokering make-believe money transactions in the game Second Life. Graef also commands top (real) dollar for her designs of make-believe fashions for players’ game characters (avatars). Two other companies are suing each other in federal court in San Francisco over the copyright to their lucrative business models of creating make-believe animals (horses, rabbits) that sell very well to players who take them on as game pets for their characters or breed them to make

Artificial meat (grown in a test tube from animal stem cells) has been theoretically planned for about 10 years, but a European Science Foundation audience in September heard predictions that lab-grown sausage might be available as soon as next year. The meat is produced in sheets (“shmeat”) and would be prohibitively expensive at first, in that the largest specimen produced so far measures only about one inch long and a third of an inch wide. The biggest drawback facing artificial muscle tissue: that even lab-grown muscles require exercise to prevent atrophy.

LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS Turned down once before, liquor manufacturer EFAG convinced Germany’s Federal Patent Court in September to award trademark protection to its schnapps with the brand name Ficken, which in German translates directly into what in English is known as the F word. The court acknowledged that the name is unquestionably in poor taste but is not “sexually discriminatory” and does not violate public morals. In fact, the court noted, the word is widely used in Germany. In March 2010, the European Union trademarks authority granted a German brewery the right to call its beer “Fucking Hell”– the first word of which is the actual name of an Austrian village and the second a German word referring to light ale. ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1519n4

FILM

The Scariest Movies to Watch on Halloween BY BARRY WURST II

S

ome of the scariest horror movies of the past decade (like Insidious, Paranormal Activity, The Ring, and Signs) had the class to stun and haunt you but not make you throw up your mochi crunch. Lately, horror films have been overdosing on remakes, sequels and torture movies that emphasize brutality, gore and human suffering but aren’t at all scary or any good. There are classic titles to watch annually around this time of year (Halloween, Night of the Living Dead, etc) but here are 10 you may not have seen or haven’t watched in years. Instead of leaving you gagging and disgusted, these films do exactly what a good horror movie should do: use skill and story to scare you silly. Darby O’ Gill and the Little People

(1959, Not Rated) An old man crosses a leprechaun one too many times… Here’s one to watch with your kids, except it could scare the blarney out of them. Look for Sean Connery in his film debut… singing! The Birds (1963, Not Rated)

Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho is my favorite movie and a perfect title for this list, but The Birds is scarier and even more shocking. A love story about a single blonde (Tippi Hendren) making a visit to Bodega Bay turns into a bizarre, unsettling, bite-your-nails-down-tothe-nubs suspense machine.

buddies who stumble upon a bunch of devil worshippers and are chased for the rest of the movie. A perfect drive-in action/horror hybrid, with great chase scenes and a memorable finish, it delivers genuine grindhouse movie thrills and some freak-out moments.

multiple roles as a demented doctor with a disturbing secret. A number of moments will make you jump out of your seat. Brian De Palma’s Carrie is a popular choice but this underrated, sexy and jolting ode to Psycho is even more fun.

An American Werewolf in London Wait Until Dark (1967, Not Rated) A blind woman (Audrey Hepburn) is terrorized by a trio of criminals who talk their way into her apartment in search of a mysterious doll. This is Hepburn’s best performance, Alan Arkin is terrific as the flashy lead villain and the finale is guaranteed to leave you shaking.

(1981, R)

Session 9 (2001, R) A group of workers assigned to renovate an abandoned insane asylum discover that something has been left behind. Brad Anderson’s thriller sneaks up on you, is awash in nightmarish atmosphere and has a third act revelation that you won’t see coming that will haunt you for days.

Black Christmas (1975, R) Christmas Eve at a quiet sorority is fun until a series of scary phone calls literally kills the merriment. Forget the terrible 2006 remake. The original classic is more subtle but far more terrifying and clearly influenced John Carpenter’s Halloween. Amazingly, this intense shocker is from the director of A Christmas Story!

Arachnophobia (1990, PG-13) It’s over 20 years old, was a family-friendly summer movie and stars Jeff Daniels and John Goodman…and it’s still the definitive creepy crawly spider flick. No creature feature with a six-legged monster has ever topped it and you might be surprised to find it’s scarier than you remember.

The Others (2001, PG-13) This classy, old fashioned haunted house thriller weaves a frightening and surprisingly moving tale. Nicole Kidman’s best performance, a shocker of an ending and some really, really scary sequences make this a must, even if you’ve already seen it (multiple viewings only make the story richer). And remember…“this house is our house.” ■

Race With the Devil (1975, PG) Peter Fonda and Warren Oates are camping

Raising Cain (1992, R) John Lithgow stars and is phenomenal in

An American back packing through Europe is attacked by a giant wolf and starts craving meat, sleepwalking naked, etc. The king of horror/ comedies, this is a violent, seriously scary werewolf movie with a wonderful sense of humor. The first film to win the Best MakeUp Oscar, it stands the test of time.

WARRIOR - PG 13 - Drama - Finally, MMA gets a real movie. Two estranged brothers–one a physics teacher, the other an Iraq War veteran–are pitted against one another by their former drunk/boxer dad (Nick Nolte). 139 min. HOROSCOPE

Sign Language BY CAERIEL CRESTIN SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

While it may feel important to focus on your worst traits, in order to improve upon and evolve past them, that’s not always the best strategy, especially when those negative aspects tend to eclipse all your most wonderful qualities every time you look in the mirror. I think wanting to become a better person is, of course, an admirable intention. I also agree that completely ignoring or blinding yourself to your faults isn’t a great idea. However, I still think your best strategy—at least this week—to transform into your best self is to deliberately and consciously focus on your best attributes, and use them to create more love, joy, or beauty in the world. The rest will mostly take care of itself.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

There are certain areas in your life that are and should remain sacrosanct. If what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, then what happens in these areas (your bedroom, for example) should also remain only the business of those who visit them. However, that’s not always clear to some of the nosy people in your life. Because your own curiosity has occasionally caused you to step over the line, you might feel uncomfortable or even hypocritical enforcing your own boundaries—but you must, nevertheless. Forgive those who’ve invaded your privacy—but firmly correct them, too.

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions on page 7

1. B: “Today marks an historic victory for democracy... 2. A: Numerous tenant complaints. 3. A: Up 64 percent.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Like me, you think honesty is one of the most important and admirable qualities in a human being. However, while telling the truth is something more people should do more often, there are times when withholding it will serve everyone better. Many relationships survive because of lies people tell each other, and while I know you don’t want that, it’s also true that an ill-timed or ill-thought truth can kill a relationship. Of course, when the truth is important, it must be told regardless, but when it’s not vital, it’s occasionally better for all concerned if you just keep your mouth shut. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Stop worrying about stuff that probably won’t happen. It’s not the least bit helpful. Preparing for the worst-case scenario may seem like a practical idea, but it’s unhealthy to focus on such morbid eventualities unless you have some real evidence they’re likely to happen soon. Go ahead and buy that insurance plan or take a precaution or two if it gives you comfort or peace of mind, then simply and completely let it go. It’s not naivetÊ to focus on all the positive stuff in your life; it’s a key element to simply being happy.

The shitty situation you’re in probably isn’t as horrible as you think it is. Don’t let your fledgling martyr complex jump immediately to your least favorite outcome and force that to happen, just so you can be proved right about how awful things are. There are a myriad other things that can happen here (none of which are perfect, admittedly), so cutting them all off at the pass just so you can suffer and say, “I told you so, doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. If you can’t figure out how to arrive at one of these solutions, just chill out and wait. Without your intervention, one will probably happen mostly on its own. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

Don’t be so quick to judge. Here’s the thing about the exceptions that will make your life exceptional—they won’t fit cleanly into the boxes you want them to. They might even throw up a red flag or two, show you something you don’t like, or simply not fit your expectations. Reject them out of hand and you may miss out on someone far superior—partially because they’re so surprising—than whoever you’re aiming for. That means offering the benefit of the doubt to those who show promise even if they’re not “perfect. They might prove to be better—but you won’t know it until you experience it.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

I think it’s sweet that you want to carry the weight of your cares and responsibilities alone, lest you burden those close to you. I also think it’s stupid. Sure, you may be able to shoulder this stuff solo, for a while, but you’ll have nothing left to help other people carry their shit. You’ll also be depriving those who care about you a chance to help you out, which they’d dearly love to do. So much of life is our connections to other people, and sharing burdens and responsibilities is part of that. When someone asks to help, let them. Then when someone asks for help, you’ll have it to give. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

What’s a deal-breaker for virtually everyone else isn’t always a deal-breaker for you—but maybe it should be. I admire your open-mindedness and willingness (and ability) to forgive and move on, but this isn’t just about you. Consider what your acceptance might mean to the other person. Are you really doing them a favor? Or would it actually—even though it feels harsh— be kinder to say no? Before you go any further down this path, consider if that’s a real possibility—then have the courage to pursue it if you decide that that’s probably what’s best.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

We all know you can get carried away by your passionate emotions, sometimes all the way into prima donna territory. Luckily for everyone, you’re getting better at recognizing this tendency earlier, and sometimes heading it off at the pass. If it’s already happened this time anyway, back things up now, before it’s too late (it’s not yet, believe it or not). Apologize and adjust your reaction accordingly. You’ll be surprised at how gracious and forgiving people will be. If it hasn’t happened yet, hurray! You can head off some drama before it even happens. Please do. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Everyone reacts to pain differently. Some might want plenty of attention, cuddles, and TLC, while others would prefer to be left alone, or have some other form of help that makes things easier without making them feel weak. It’s truly hard to figure out how best to be there for someone, particularly when they’re unwilling or unable to really tell you. However, there’s no one better equipped than you to unravel such mysteries. Please at least try. You know how great it feels when you hit on just the right thing, that thing that really does someone good. This week, just be persistent, creative, and patient, and you’ll get there again.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Libras are fantastically talented at keeping secrets. That’s because telling secrets often ruffles feathers all around, and ruffling feathers is something you usually prefer to avoid at all costs. However, sometimes you need to, especially when refusing to share vital information (for fear of conflict) is potentially hurtful or damaging to someone you care about. Therefore, prepare yourself to spill the beans, and cope with all the dramatic fallout that might ensue. It may not be the easiest or happiest thing—but if you know it’s the right thing, you must steel yourself to do it regardless.

BEST AUTO MECHANIC WHAT WE DO IN OUR

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Many Aries are a bit spoiled. You’re charming and wonderful in many ways, but you can—especially when you’re young—also require tremendous indulgence from those around you. That’s okay. Those who couldn’t deal with that split a long time ago. Most Rams eventually outgrow their bratty behavior. When you do, though, don’t expect a lot of special treatment, pats on the back, and congratulations for finally stepping up. This, after all, is probably what you should have been doing all along. Accept that not getting recognition for it is also part of this evolutionary process, swallow your pride, and get on with living life without being a spoiled brat.
