I liked your story in Mauitime’s Nov. 10, 2011 edition: “In The Navy.” “Six feet” and “they own you” is/was not a joke! I’m sure more veterans would love to see and read stories about other service members. It makes me feel better understanding other men/women went through the same BS. My great uncle died at Pearl Harbor in the Marines and my grand father and another uncle served as well during a war. I’m glad I did my time and think every young man should in this great country.

-Kjennings4, via Mauifeed.com I agree that there are many instances where unqualified students are exploited. There are also a few instances where folks went on to stardom at the pro level. There are other instances where students received a great education at no cost to them. It’s a great opportunity for people fortunate enough to be considered. What they do with that opportunity is in their court...
Jim Nakama, via Mauitime.com I do not know if a boycott of the tournament is good for Maui–I’m sure the people of Maui benefit from the income, entertainment, and publicity or the event– but Taylor Branch deserves praise for his reasoned report and you deserve applause for taking a strong stand. There seems little doubt any longer that major universities are taking advantage of revenue-producing student athletes. Somehow, otherwise educated officials have deluded themselves into believing that they are acting in the best interests of the athletes. Major college athletics is amateur in name only, or maybe only in the minds of college presidents and athletic directors. Even more effective than a boycott by Mauians would be a boycott by the athletes. Their refusal to play would cause immediate change in an unjust system.

I myself played division two basketball on a small scholarship and received a few other allowed benefits (shoes, team meals, team outings) that added to the money received towards tuition and books. Collegiate athletes receive enough. The best result would be for the university to make enough money to allow academic scholarships for other smaller athletic teams that do not generate the same revenue (volleyball, lacrosse, etc.) or for those students that currently do not benefit. Compared to the best and the brightest high school students that would do anything for a full scholarship, college athletes have a very nice head start and
As a homeowner in the Kehalani subdivision, I would like to say how frustrating it is to have a developer put a strip mall next to my home (Coconut Wireless, Nov. 3, 2011). Maybe if we could have the park we’ve been promised for years, our kids could have a place to play when they are pre-diabetic and obese from eating at the new McDonald’s. The new road between Kehalani and Maui Lani is full of people running, biking and walking their dogs everyday. Why must we smell greasy fast food while trying to make good choices about our health? Last, but not least, there is already a McDonald’s less than a mile away from the proposed one.

1. According to the Associated Press, on Thursday, Nov. 10, 5th Circuit Court Judge Laurel Loo on Kauai sentenced Maui residents April and Steven Schaefer to one year in prison. What was their crime? A. Defrauding investors out of hundreds or even thousands of dollars in the 1990s by setting up a fake solar energy company that promised to install energy-saving solar panels on homes but instead just placed cardboard sheets wrapped in aluminum foil on rooftops, many of which weren’t even oriented towards the sun. B. Scamming 21 people out of hundreds or even thousands of dollars in the 1990s by promising them future land rights under an as-yet-unestablished Hawaiian Kingdom. C. Practicing tantric massage over a threeyear period without a license. D. Placing tires on the heads of local bulls in the hopes of making national and even international news.
2. On Friday, Nov. 11, about a dozen people staged a protest on Church Street in Wailuku. Who were they and what were they protesting? A. Occupy Maui members protesting Wall
Street abuses. B. TEA Party Maui members protesting Occupy Maui. C. International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers members protesting Hawaiian Telcom. D. They were just people standing around. They can still that, right? Stand around on a public street without it being labeled a protest, right? Right?!
3. On Monday, Nov. 14, Maui County officials dedicated some new statues at Sun Yat Sen Park in Kula as part of a celebration of the centennial anniversary of the 1911 Chinese Revolution. What was Sun Yat Sen’s connection to the island in the first place? A. His brother owned a ranch in Kula. B. Sun Yat Sen practiced medicine in Kula. C. Sun Yat Sen had a false birth certificate showing Kula residency. D. All of the above. E. None of the above. F. A and B only.

Talk of the Island

In that book, Blackford writes in some detail of the promise and difficulties that lay in the creation of the MRTP–difficulties that really haven’t changed, even in the last decade. Island leaders first conceived of the MRTP back in the early 1980s, but it was a decade before construction actually began. By the time Blackford’s book came out, the tech park–which benefited from more than $32 million in federal and state funds–housed “twenty some companies and organizations” and employed “about 350 people.” That sounds pretty solid, but in the last decade, the MRTP’s own numbers show virtually nothing has Talk to the hand. changed. “Today approximately 400 people work in the Maui Research & Technology park at over 20 compabie, for whatever reason, said no, prompting nies,” states the MRTP website. the paper to go to court. three four-year degrees and its academic standing is nowhere near Stanford University, which helps power Silicon Valley. But it’s the focus on Maui as a center of energy research that is most fascinating. “APEC’s drawing a lot of attention to Maui because we are one of the leaders in [alternative energy] installation,” Mayor Alan Arakawa told The Maui News. If anything, Maui (and Hawaii) is tardy in focusing on alternative energy. For far too long now, the islands have been dangerously dependent on imported petroleum. Though given this partial list of power outages for the Maui Electric Company (MECO) over just the last year (as compiled from MauiNow.com), it’s hard to believe things on the island will get any better once our venerable utility gets its hands on wave generators, geothermal wells and acres of photovoltaic cells: • Jan. 10: High winds knock out power for 4,700 customers from Makawao to Hana • Jan. 21: 4,300 customers in Wailuku and Waiehu lose power because of “accumulated moisture” on equipment • Feb. 2: 10,000 customers across Central and Upcountry Maui lose power when a

MAUI CRASHES APEC The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference was way over on Oahu this past week, but that didn’t mean the County of Maui couldn’t carve out a nice (though relatively tiny) slice of the pie. And they did so by means of a booklet touting the island’s non-tourism virtues that county officials handed out to APEC attendees, according to the Nov. 12 Maui News. “Maui County Office of Economic Development Coordinator Teena Rasmussen said Friday that she wanted to drive home the point that Maui isn’t just resorts, time shares, sugar cane and pineapples anymore,” the paper reported. Indeed, the county’s little booklet highlighted the is-

A MIGHTY WIND Of course, building the kinds of alternative energy plants that Maui and Hawaii require is sometimes easier said than done. Wind power, for instance, is elegant and wonderful–completely pollution and fuel-free, it harnesses nothing more than the movement of air through the atmosphere to produce electricity. It’s also rather controversial. It’s easy to forget now, but the 30 megawatt Kaheawa Wind Farm built above Ma‘alaea caused considerable grumbling back in 2006 when it went online because of the way it altered the ridgeline’s aesthetics. And Kaheawa has just 20 windmills. Over on Lanai, Caste & Cooke wants to build 170 windmills in the 20,000-acre Ka‘a ahupua‘a. And locals are fired up, though not because of mere aesthetic reasons– Ka‘a is one of the state’s “most endangered historic places,” according to the Nov. 14 Maui News. The area contains “an unknown number” of cultural sites, according to the paper, but is known to have been an important fishing settlement in ancient times that contained the island’s largest heiau. Castle & Cooke’s own materials on the project are vague on how the windfarm would affect the cultural and historical aspects of the area. “These are all important issues and are currently being studied as part of the EIS process to determine impacts,” states the “Big Wind” website (Lanaiwind.com). “The community, governmental agencies, and various other public and private organizations will have an opportunity to review and comment on the EIS [Environmental Impact Statement] to help us develop a better project.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1522n2

MISSING HIKER FOUND DEAD Hiker Tristan “Turtle” Brennan, 29, whose disappearance over the weekend made the news all over Maui, has died. His body was found in the Maliko Gulch area of Haiku on the afternoon of Monday, Nov. 14 following a search by a Maui Fire & Public Safety helicopter crew. A fit and avid surfer and hunter, Brennan was last seen late last week walking in the pineapple fields near Maliko. Family members filed a missing person’s report on Saturday, Nov. 12. The official statement from the Maui Police Department on Brennan’s death was terse, and leaves vague exactly how Brennan died. “On November 14, 2011 at about 1530 hours, the body of Tristan Brennan (29) was found in the Maliko Gulch area,” Maui PD Lt. Wayne Ibarra said in the statement. “No foul play is suspected. An autopsy will be scheduled to determine the cause of death.”
HALEAKALA NEEDS INTERNS Haleakala National Park has opened up a new internship program that they believe will provide critical stepping stones in helping middle school students develop market-

able skills and professional contacts, as well as learn about and appreciate Hawaii’s natural areas and species. The youths must be available full time from Mar. 12-16 from 7:30am to 4pm. Free transportation to the park will be provided from designated pick-up areas. The week-long internship is designed to introduce kids to park programs and generate interest in careers related to natural resources management and facilities management. Twelve students will be selected through a competitive process. It doesn’t cost the students anything to apply. They can obtain applications from Kuhea Paracuelles at 572-4452 or via email at kuhea_paracuelles@nps.gov. Applications are due by Jan. 31, 2012. This is the third internship program offered at Haleakala, the other two being a high school summer internship and an 11-week intensive program for college students.
Electric Opportunity
hicle Alliance (Maui EVA) was launched at the Grand Wailea via a meeting with officials from the University of Hawaii Maui College, Hawaii State Energy Office, Honolulu Clean Cities and 30 other Hawaii government, business and organization partners. Their plan is to create and implement a Maui County wide plan for the infrastructure and adoption of electric vehicles. “We estimate that 15 to 20 percent of the vehicles used on Maui are rental cars driven by visitors, a much higher density than in other cities or counties of comparable size elsewhere,” said Susan Wyche, UHMC special project coordinator. “With such short driving distances, EVs are the perfect choice for visitors coming to enjoy our island. But to give them that option, we need the support of rental car companies, as well as public charging stations at hotels, state parks, and other recreational sites. Once an islandwide infrastructure is in place, residents will be able to use those charging stations, and rental car companies, like Enterprise and Hertz, will be able to sell their EV fleet to the local Maui market instead of shipping them elsewhere.” Maui EVA has a $300,000 grant from the US Department of Energy to prepare Maui for widespread adoption of electronic vehicles. The strategy is to get local companies, hotels and state parks that serve the visitor industry to partner with Maui EVA and collectively create the infrastructure needed. Along with car rental companies, auto dealers understand the benefit of creating charging stations as the demand for EVs increases. a October saw the arrival of the first Chevy Volt on Maui at
Jim Falk Motors. They’ve also sold several Nissan Leafs. “We’ve sold close to 35 EVs this year, and the demand is increasing every month,” said Andy Stehl, sales consultant for Jim Falk Maui Motors. “We’ve heard from customers that the lack of charging stations really influences their decision to choose an EV. More charging stations would definitely expand the market.” To prepare the workforce, UHMC will train auto repair technicians as well as electricians, contractors, engineers and managers with the technical skills they need through the Sustainable Construction, Trade Apprenticeship, Engineering Technology and Sustainable Science Management programs and degrees. “Electric cars are clean, quiet and dependable,” said Mayor Alan Arakawa, who attended both Maui EVA and Japan-U.S. Smart Grid Project meetings. “Maui has the opportunity to show the world the full benefits of both EVs and smart grid technologies operating in tandem. Maui is proud to serve as the testing ground for both technologies.”

Grantees included Ma Ka Hana Ka‘ike, the University of Hawaii, the Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the Tri-isle Resource Conservation and Development Council, MEO, the Maui Flower Grower’s Association and the Kahana Canoe Club. County officials say grantees were selected based upon their economic impact through business and/or jobs created or sustained. Improvements to the county in the areas of agriculture, business, education, the arts and culture are also considered. Those interested in applying for county grants are urged to do so as soon as possible. The grant application process is extensive and can take two months to process. NEWS OF THE WEIRD BY CHUCK SHEPARD
BLOODY GOOD FOOD “You eat meat, so why not blood?” asked The Globe and Mail, which sampled several Toronto restaurants’ sanguinary haute cuisines, including the Italian eatery Buca’s spaghetti with blood-blackened noodles and torta di sanguinaccio (figs, almonds, buffalo-milk creme, on a base custard of dark chocolate and slowcooked pig’s blood). Patrons “thought we were crazy,” said chef Rob Gentile, but now “can’t seem to get enough.” The Black Hoof restaurant uses 10 liters of fresh blood a week for dishes like its own blood custard, seasoned with rosemary and pickled pears. Montreal’s DNA kitchen sometimes highlights blood soup and blood pasta.
BROW FURROWING NEWS “I don’t get it. I just don’t get it. And you’re not going to get me to get it,” warned Marine squadron commander Lt. Col. Jerry Turner (to a Wall Street Journal Afghanistan reporter writing in October), when learning that a few of his troops were sporting artistically shaped eyebrows sculpted by a barber in the town of Shinwar. “Stylist” Gulam Farooq can’t practice on Muslims but said “one or two” Marines come by every day for tapering.
THE CONTINUING CRISIS The Military Times news service, reporting from Afghanistan in August, disclosed a U.S. Marines command directive ordering troops to restrain their audible flatus because, apparently, Afghan soldiers and civilians complained of being offended. The reporter doubted the directive could be effective, in that passing gas by front-line troops is “practically a sport.”
NOT FOR THE FELINEFRIENDLY A vendor at a street market in Leipzig, Germany, was revealed in September to be shamelessly selling personally tailored coats and vests made with fur from house cats. A first report, in the sensationalist tabloid Bild, was doubted, but a follow-up by Germany’s premier news source, Spiegel, confirmed the story. The vendor said he needed eight cats to make a vest (priced at the equivalent of $685) and 18 for a coat. However, such sales are illegal under German and European Union laws, and the vendor subsequently denied that he sold such things.
TOO SOON? An 11-year-old California boy and a seven-yearold Georgia girl have recently decided–with parental support–to come out as the other gender. The boy, Tommy, wants more time to think about it, said his lesbian parents, and has begun taking hormone blockers to make his transition easier should he follow through with plans (first disclosed at age three) to become “Tammy.” The McIntosh County, Ga., girl has been living as a boy for a year, said father Tommy Theollyn, a transgendered man who is actually the one who gave birth. Theollyn petitioned the school board in September (unsuccessfully) to allow the child to use the boys’ bathroom. Theollyn said the girl
first noticed she was a boy at age 18 months.
MIME KAMPF In October, about 120 professional mimes began voluntarily patrolling the traffic-congested Sucre district of Caracas, Venezuela, at the request of Mayor Carlos Ocariz. The whitegloved mimes’ specialty was wagging their fingers at scofflaw motorists and pedestrians, and mimes interviewed by the Associated Press reported improvements. And at least 300 professional clowns from Mexico and Central America, in Mexico City in October for a convention, demonstrated against the country’s drug-cartel violence by laughing, in unison, nonstop, for 15 minutes. They were likely less successful than the mimes.

hank you so much for making my dining experience more pleasurable! While sitting and eating a nice sushi lunch, you decided that your toddler needed his diaper changed. Did you go to the restroom? No–you simply placed your child on the table next to us and proceeded to change his poopie diaper. Pewwwww! Then you walked through the restaurant to a trash can with said poopie diaper–which, by the way, was not even bagged–passing by the rest of us customers who were trying to eat. Next time use the restroom so we can finish our meals!■
RENAISSANCE MAN Freemon Seay, 38, was arrested in Thurston County, Wash., in October on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after disciplining his 16-year-old daughter for leaving home without his approval. Seay allegedly forced the girl to suit up in armor and helmet, with a wooden sword, and to fight him (also in armor, with a wooden sword) for two hours until she could no longer stand up. Seay’s wife (the girl’s stepmother) was booked as an accessory and was said by deputies to have been supportive of her husband’s “Renaissance fair” enthusiasm.
JUST PLAIN AWESOME The ingenuity of drug smugglers is never to be underestimated, as one ABC News report from Nogales, Ariz., in October demonstrated. Smugglers had dug tunnels from Nogales, Mexico, underneath the border to Nogales, Ariz., engineered perfectly to end along International Street’s metered parking spaces. Vans with false bottoms were parked in certain spaces (and meters were fed); smugglers in the vans broke though the pavement to meet the tunnelers, and the drugs were loaded. Still parked, the vans’ crews repaired the pavement, and the vans departed.

ARMED AND CLUMSY Two men–a 23-year-old in Fayetteville, N.C. (June), and a 22-year-old in Seminole, Fla. (October)–accidentally shot themselves in the head while trying to assure friends that their guns posed no danger. A firearms instructor shot himself in the thigh during his recertification class at the Smith & Wesson facility in Springfield, Mass. (September). A man on a first date at Ruth’s Chris Steak house in Charlotte, N.C., accidentally shot himself in the leg as he was escorting his date to their car (September). And at least one man (a 27-year-old in Chandler, Ariz.) paid the price for inartfully using his waistband as a holster, causing a “groin” injury (August). And Milwaukee police secured a search warrant to photograph Otis Lockett’s penis (July), as evidence that he was illegally in possession of a gun (as a felon) by showing that he had accidentally shot off nearly all of his organ. ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1522n4

O h, Maui. OUR GLORIOUS ISLAND. How lucky are we? The often-perfect weather, the beautiful people, surrounded on all sides by a sparkling, inviting ocean. Maui’s towns are scattered around the island like beads from a broken necklace, and it’s usually inconvenient to drive home for a shower in between surf, beach, work and playtime. And while showing up for work or party time with surf-blown hair and sandy feet isn’t always a bad thing, a quick rinse in a beach shower can bring you polish and comfort. While I do love the look of salt encrusted into arm hair, sand in the pants is never comfortable. Which is why the beach showers are amongst the loveliest of public services. From rinsing down our pit bulls and keiki to keeping the sand from getting too deep in our cars, most thoughtlessly take advantage of the many beach showers dotting our shorelines. I love a good powerful clean shower almost as much as a good ocean session, and throughout the years I’ve catalogued the good, the passable, and the ugly. There are elements that make for a beautiful experience (adequate pressure, appropriate temperature, cleanliness, ideal positioning between sand and car) and those that sour the experience (tricky hardware, slime, and spying weirdos). Here’s a look at some of the more prominent beach showers around the island—a celebration and a lament, of sorts.

MAKENA: B+
MAKENA IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL BEACH. Though Big Beach is so widely frequented by so very many kinds of people, it still manages to retain somewhat of an unpopulated feel. With its wide appeal, it’s annoying in the moment yet actually okay that there are no showers at the actual beach. We don’t want those lovely waters sullied by tourist sunscreen slime, skimboarder sweat, and runoff from the Little Beach patchouli juice crew. So after we pack up the boards, coolers, and towels, this little shower gem is a necessary pit stop before heading into the heart of Kihei. This not-so-secret but not-super-well-known locals-mostly pull-off spot boasts very nearly perfect beach showers. A solid setup: multiple heads and a circular, tilted surface make for a pleasant gathering spot. The showers are cold and pounding, and there is so much pressure that you can’t hear anyone around you if you stand very still under the pumping waterfall. It’s not directly on the beach, so it lacks the secondhand sand element and you come away perfectly clean from your ears to your squeaking slippers. The lava-rock church across the street is gorgeous and special, if a bit melancholy. There is a unique serenity to the place, and a certain eerie, quiet beauty in the cemetery by the sea. The energy you’ve gotten from charging Makena all day cools off into a solid peace, and you’re fresh and ready for whatever comes next.

circles. Your towel, full of silty, fine shell dust, is equally hopeless in the face of all those tiny particles. Mocking and deliberately useless, it’s a lose-lose situation.
KAM III: C+ EH. Like the beach itself, the showers are okay, but a bit of a letdown compared to the world-class spots so nearby. The park is also frequented by a population of creepy older men, so privacy standards are poor. In general, it’s a little strange to talk to strangers while you shower, but most Maui people can pull it off in a way that’s not uncomfortable at all—sharing stoke about the waves, wishing someone a good day, smiling at funny little kids as they use the foot shower to wash their heads—all okay. However, overly interested older men in man-panties cannot, ever, talk to you in a shower and make it a comfortable experience. A lot of them seem to use the showers here as a place to strike up awkward conversations. (Note about the Southside, and sand on Maui in general: the sand in Kihei is so different from the Northshore that what you really need to clear the minuscule particles from your hair and person is a fireman hose. If you look closely, North shore sand is really very tiny bits of shells. North shore sand contains a little universe of fish boneyards and tiny cast-off sea creature outfits. These are easier to wash off. Kihei sand is of a different variety—soft and silty, the kind that took eons to break down, and is the most dreadful to get on your sheets, the kind that you find in your ears many days after that hilariously failed attempt at skimboarding.)
“As a bonus,
sometimes there’s a stash of slimy Ivory soap wedged sloppily into the metal (Who does that? Are they trying to be nice, so others can use it? Or just store it for later use? Either way, weird).”
P AIA BAY: CANCIENT, crusty, slimy hardware and bum urine. As a bonus, sometimes there’s a stash of slimy Ivory soap wedged sloppily into the metal (Who does that? Are they trying to be nice, so others can use it? Or just store it for later use? Either way, weird). There’s a slab of cement buried deep within the slop, but it only sees the sun when the kind souls at the Youth Center shovel it out. Points for a decent pressure, but there’s always the off chance that the Hepatitis soup at your feet could contain something really scary, so overall poor marks.
HO‘OK IP A: A HOOKIPA is an example of what every beach shower could easily be. They’re not super stylish, like many of the surfers who use them, but they’re efficient and they do the job, and the three shower head deal makes for a quick getaway. They’re super close to the beach, too, so it’s no big thing to shower in between a surf or a swim and your beach time. Ho‘okipa; a world-class surf break and favorite hangout spot, with the advantages of cute tidepools for the beach babies and a bread-and-butter shower setup.
FLEMING BEACH: D
MA‘ALAEA: B-
SUPER-WEST WESTSIDE. Not a lot of shower options in this neck of the woods—or rather, on this part of the neck of the island. So after Windmills or the bay or any of the really amazing salty places you can find over there, this is your likely shower rendezvous point before your next grand adventure. It’s a beautiful and appealing beach with fun waves, but the showers get a solid D. It’s almost an affliction—they might as well not be there. Maybe I’m too harsh. The metal gleams cleanly; it’s cement and not sand you’re standing on; the people using it are beautiful. But it stupidly displays the worst of shower inventions ever, the push-button spray. You have to stand there and incessantly push the stupid little push button, where one push gets you approximately five frustrating seconds of mist. You end up working it madly and turning in little circles, trying to hold it down in a futile attempt to get just some out of your suit. You’re contorting in what you hope is a discrete crouch, trying not the flash the goods but really trying to get the goods clean, before eventually giving it up as a bad job. Push buttons are actually a little insulting. Do you not trust us to turn off the water when we’re done? I feel like a depraved child at a wicked boarding school, allowed a scanty, timed shower and left confused and unsatisfied. Fleming’s perfect beach barrels mean you come out with sand in a lot of places you really don’t want sand, so this shower really bites it. Last time I surfed there, I got too excited on my last wave and pulled into a closeout barrel breaking right on the sand. I crashed, bopped my head on my own board, and washed up ingloriously on the crowded beach. An old beach boy yelled “Charge um, sistah!” and though it was actually pretty fun, I felt pretty dumb. The only thing that outweighed my shame was the amount of sand in my swimsuit. My pride was hurt further when I gave up on the ridiculous teasing spray of the shower. I would have had better luck trying to climb into the sink in the girls’ bathroom. (Note about shower hardware: The pull handles make the most sense—up is off, down is on. With those twisty ones, I’m stuck whispering “Righty tighty…” to myself as I spin them helplessly around in circles, only half expecting some kind of result (beach showers seem to break more often than waves in some places on this island). And push buttons—you know how I feel about them. Let’s not go there again.)
DECENT, if you lack a partner. There’s sometimes sticky white rice residue from campers using it as a sink, but the smart tilt of the raised cement keeps it decently clean. If you get it alone, the Lahaina facing spout had a pretty decent flow. Any shower buddies tend to steal your juice, but anytime you’re showering at Ma‘alaea means you just scored some lovely waves at Rusty Pipes or some thrillers at Freight Trains. Everyone’s stoked, and you can’t begrudge a stoked and smiling shower buddy. There’s also a pretty good shower between the condos in front of Mud Flats, and then you wind up on the grass, so that’s even better. Just depends on what kind of parking you scored. You always want to stash your slippers in the bushes here, too, because I’ve had someone walk away with my beat-up pair (although he or she might’ve thought they were actually their rubber Locals).
BALDWIN: N/A THE SHOWERS at this landmark beach have always been an issue, because that moody beach marches to the beat of its own drum. And it’s not a djembe, people. Every year, the cove-bay right side gets sick of all the hula hoops and hippie parties, and rears its ugly skeleton roots like an animal baring its teeth. It recently rebuilt itself once again, grudgingly I think, but Baldwin is a temperamental big mama of a beach and will grow, shrink, kick up seaweed and weird stumpy driftwood, and blow up violent windstorms as it sees fit. I find its impertinence extremely endearing. Baldwin also has an indifferent attitude toward keeping a good shower on its sands. In years past, the waves would bury the shower stems in sand until they became Menehune-sized debacles. The skinny little necks stuck out of the sand rather sadly, like children buried in holes and left to sulk. It was pretty funny to watch people crouch down trying to get a good spray on the face. Someone eventually dug them out, but it seemed also strange to stand in a hole and shower. At one point the showers were attached to the building and had classy little wooden crates to stand on. Then they were closer to the water, and then most recently they were by the trees, where they boasted a nifty little-person sized shower. So yes, Baldwin’s showers have evolved through the years, and they’ve recently gone extinct. It’s really too bad, because the cove-dwellers of the recently rebuilt beach could use a good hosing-off. I’m feeling a new sticker: Welcome to Baldwin: Do not Wash the Hippies. Kidding!
SHARK P IT / BREAKWALL: B+ AT SHARK PIT, you can always sneak into someone’s Front Street yard and use a hose. Oh, the glorious hose. Every beach should have one. There used to be a garden hose in the bushes at Mama’s Fish House, before there was valet there. Even as a young beach pup, I loved a good post-beach freshwater dousing. Anyway, hoses are awesome for getting the sand off. The hose discretely reaches all the places you have a really hard time getting to from a sky-falling waterpiece, and as a bonus you can spray your friends. Boat ramps are good for this, although you have to bring your own hose. And no, I’m not crazy. I don’t carry a hose with me. It’s not that I haven’t considered it, I just know that fishermen, as a rule, have huge aloha and they will always let you use theirs while they wash their boats.
HAMOA: A+ HAMOA. Even the name is pleasing, strong and soft. The lava rock-tinted sand, the lovely water pure and clear as a baby’s soul, the beautiful Hawaiian boys serenading long-haired girls in the shade. You’re out all day, surfing Koki and Waikaloa (no showers), Red Sands (no shower, naked butts) cooling off in the cave at Wainapanapa, hiking up to the cross, eating chili and side of the road papayas, and generally blissing out on life. Hours in the crystal shorebreak barrels of Hamoa are always well rewarded in the showers. The raised concrete sports a pleasing moss-green tinge, but it’s clean pretty color, and not slippery or slimy. You don’t have to drag your slippers back through any sand, like most beaches, where your perfectly showered self must walk back through sand on the way out. Chilly, powerful and wonderful, the shower at Hamoa beach wins the big prize. Pound on your sand-filled hair, washing away all traces of carsickness, shave-ice belly ache, camping grime, sunburn stings, and very likely all the sins of your past. I feel like a Hawaiian princess in the showers of Hamoa. There’s just something special about it. People sitting on the wall checking out waves give you a knowing smile. They know you’ve just experienced something really special. There’s only one shower head, which is usually adequate, but I have seen a small lineup for the shower, which I don’t actually mind. It’s a very hard shower to get out of. They’re enjoying it just as much as I’m about to, and I just can’t blame a fellow beach and shower-lover for that. And you’re in Hana, one of the most beautiful places this entire earth has to offer. Beached and showered, clean and happy, I climb the plumeria-strewn stairs feeling as clean, fresh and pure as Hana itself. ■ LANTANA HOKE To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1522L

Wine Flight
Talking Washington Wine With Amavi Cellars’ Travis Goff BY JEN RUSSO
Travis Goff Partner Amavi Cellars & Pepper Bridge Winery Walla Walla, Washington
out at the wineries. We are fighting the good fight. In the world of mass-produced food and drink, we should be doomed. But like a significant portion of the American population, we are returning to/sticking to our roots. Agriculture, originality, authenticity, quality. Wines that show the personality of their vineyards and their growing region. Why do a wine flight? Is this a good way to taste wine? A flight delights the senses. It allows you to sample a variety of flavors without making the commitment of a full bottle. Also, the chef specially prepares the dishes to pair with the wines. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. You get more out of the wines and out of the food because they complement and enhance each other.
Wine Flight Saturday, Nov. 19 5:30pm-close Pacific’o and I’o 505 Front St., Lahaina Pepper Bridge 2007, Merlot $16 Glass Amavi 2008, Cabernet $14 Glass Pepper Bridge 2010, Semillon $10 Glass A flight of all three wines for $15, or have the flights or wines paired with dishes presented by the chefs.

great-grandfather took over an accounting firm with an American he befriended in prison camp. Unfortunately I have never had the opportunity to live here. Wow, we would have never guessed that looking at you. But appearances don’t reveal everything, just like wine labels. Tell me what’s behind the labels on the wineries you will be representing on Maui. I am a partner in Amavi Cellars and Pepper Bridge Winery. Second generation. Both wineries are 100 percent Certified Sustainable (vineatrust.org). We grow all of our own grapes. What makes these wines interesting to you? They’re exceptionally structured, fullbodied wines with long, lingering finish. New world fruit with old world earthiness.
acific’o and I’o Restaurants will be offering flights of Amavi and Pepper Bridge wines this Sat., Nov. 19 with host Travis Goff from Amavi Cellars and Pepper Bridge Winery in Washington state. Washington is second only to California in the production of wines in the US. I got a chance to give Goff a pop quiz on Washington wine, and why you should book a seat on this flight.
I’m drawn to earthiness textures and flavors in wine. What makes creating wine in Washington successful? Washington – and Walla Walla in particular – provides the perfect climate for growing wine grapes. Long, warm summer days and cool nights create grapes with exceptional ripeness without losing necessary acidity. As a result, the wines are well-balanced and elegant.
MAUITIME: Have you been to Hawaii or do you have any ties here? TRAVIS GOFF: My Mom is a Hilo native—third-generation “Hawaiian.” My great-grandparents came over via boat from Scotland after World War I. My
Again, the finer points come back to the terrior. Location, location, location. Is there anything else about the wines in the wine flight that will be offered at Pacifico and Io on Saturday? These are small-production wines. The 2007 Merlot and 2010 Semillon are sold
What are some important things to consider while tasting? Drink what you like! A wine can be com-
pelling because of its taste, its aroma, its body (full or light) or even its texture (are tannins smooth like velvet or rough like sand?). It will taste different depending on what you drink it with. The most important thing is to drink what YOU like and have fun exploring the world of wine. Despite the pomp and circumstance some people attach to the wine culture, at the end of the day all we are truly dealing with is an agricultural product, an ancient art that brings relaxation, connection between people and pleasure. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso

WANDERING WINO BY JASON “CASS” CASTLE
I
’ve read about it but never before actually caught sight of it. But there it was, emblazoned on the back label of my bottle of wine. “Vegan.” I’m drinking Nuevo Mundo Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon/Malbec, Maipo Valley, Chile 2009 on a couch at the Makawao Steak House. The green movement has been alive and well in viticulture for the past decade, with organic and biodynamic wines leading the charge. Many of these wines are, in fact, vegan by definition. But the Nuevo Mundo is the first I’ve witnessed to declare this on the label. Let’s break it down. Most wines go through a fining/filtration process that requires animal-derived ingredients to remove excess grape skins, stems, yeast cells, etc. These ingredients range from simple egg whites to sturgeon fish bladders. Sometimes even deer blood, very un-vegan. The vegan label assures you the absence of these practices. The Nuevo Mundo displays a slightly more rustic color and contains more sediment than traditional red wines, common differences owned by unfiltered wine. It’s
a jammy sucker, too. Big, ripe, red cherries with crushed blackberries and a pronounced herbal tea note in the background. Even more exciting than the flavor is the price tag. It’s been a long time indeed since I’ve enjoyed a wine for less than $30 in a restaurant setting. Rumor has it that you can pick up a bottle at Whole Foods Market or Hawaii Liquor Superstore as well. Most importantly, this lovely vegan wine pairs nicely with a wide range of food. Initially I was torn between a few menu options, but I finally ordered an entrée that proved to be a perfect match. “I’ll have the 12-ounce prime rib of beef please. Rare, of course.” For diehard fans of the vegan lifestyle, check out vegans.frommars.org/wine for an extensive list of vegan wines. ■

ow celebrating its fifth year, the Wailea Food & Wine Celebration features Maui’s top chefs and vintners, a fine art and fine dining auction, music and the joyful company of artists and friends. Good company. Stunning views. Relaxed atmosphere. Worthy cause. Surrounded by the peaceful ambiance and tropical views from the Hotel Wailea, guests will experience incredible culinary variety while comparing the exquisite wines provided by Chambers & Chambers Wine Merchants. With past years’ esteemed company including vintners from Grgich Hills Estate, Jordan Winery, Justin Vineyards & Winery and Shafer Vineyards as well as chefs from Capische?, Five Palms Restaurant, MCC Culinary Academy and Spago Maui, this year’s event promises food and wine of the highest caliber. Guests will also have the opportunity to participate in an auction for an elegant four-course catered dinner and wine pairing for 18 at the Hui No‘eau’s historic Kaluanui Estate. When Chambers & Chambers designated the Hui as the beneficiary of the event, they touched the lives and artistic endeavors of more than 10,000 people on Maui. The Hui serves the island with educational programs, running art classes and camps at their Baldwin Avenue location, and also with outreach in the community. With our own public education institutions struggling to provide quality art education, the Hui fulfills some of that need. Chambers & Chambers set the event so that 100 percent of proceeds after cost goes to the Hui. This event will take place on Friday, Nov. 18 at the Hotel Wailea, beginning at 5:30pm.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23 GOOD THINGS COME IN TUBES - True story: the Makawao Union Church has been around about as long as paint’s come in tubes (mid-19th century). Compared to having to lug pots of dry pigments and oils to concoct paints, the tube-with-cap innovation saved otherwise wasted supplies and made on-the-go studios a breeze–allowing for plein air’s (i.e. outdoor painting) popularity to burgeon as a key component of the Barbizon school and Impressionism movement. Part of Makawao Union Church’s 150 year anniversary celebrations, a plein air competition will take place ce today, beginning with a meet-and-greet coffee session (8am). Contestants may find their inspiration from the church facade, around its grounds, or from any view of the historic site, and will vie for prizes including $500 cash for “Best of Show,” plus three honorable mention awards and a “People’s Choice Award.” Artists’ work will be displayed in the church throughout the holiday season. Spectators encouraged. ged. No entry fee. 8am-6pm. Makawao Union Church (1445 Baldwin dwin Ave.); for more info, call Joseph Fletcher at 283-1107

iving progenitors of pogo punk–SoCal’s Youth Brigade and New Jersey’s The Bouncing Souls–gig Maui for the first time, with the isle’s own Order of the White Rose and Minor Setback opening the show. A band of three brothers named Stern– Mark (bass), Adam (drums) and Shawn (guitar)–formed Youth Brigade in 1980, and are credited with having had influenced punk notables like Pennywise, Rancid and The Nation of Ulysses. Their first studio release, Sound & Fury, followed 30city tour with Social Distortion in 1982 (their yellow school bus-driven misadventures of which are chronicled in the cult doco Another State of Mind); and due to a reported dissatisfaction with the product, was re-recorded and released the following year, concurrent with an expanded North American tour. Youth Brigade disbanded in ‘85 following an ambitious European tour–one of the first hops across the pond for an independent, underground American act. More than a decade since their formation, they reunited in 1991 and recorded their six-song EP Come Again. Since 2007, their lineup has been sansbrother Adam, and currently includes John Carey (guitar) and Joey “Balls” Garibaldi (bass). They’re reported to be in the midst of working on a new album, their first in more than 15 years.
Capitalizing on the Rutgers University town’s music scene in the late ‘80s, East Coast-based The Bouncing Souls (though not college students themselves) are heralded as a seminal component to the burgeoning modern punk genre. Beloved by fans for their “anthemic shoutalong choruses,” (Allmusic. com reviews) they pay homage to the good doctor Martin, who’s squishy shoe souls are part and parcel for every punk. The Bouncing Soul’s lineup has remained relatively unchanged over the decades, and currently includes Greg Attonito (vocals), Bryan Kienlen (bass), Michael McDermott (drums) and Pete Steinkopf (guitar). Punknews.org reports the band’s working on an album slated for release in spring of 2012, a follow up to their unique 2010 album Ghosts on the Boardwalk. They say, “We’re doing it all ourselves again. A return to complete DIY songwriting.” Maui’s own Order of the White Rose may be a niche band, but because of their nonpareil POV–undoubtedly the only pure punk ensemble in the world that explores kanaka
Bouncing Souls
maoli sovereignty issues (though the band members themselves are not kanaka)–their message transcends any rift created by genres’ ever-antiquating tendency for dogma, and stylistically speaks to a desire to rage for what’s right. Anyone even remotely connected to Hawaii’s heavier side knows the trio– Nate and Noah Robertson (bass and drums, respectively) and Steve Hart (guitar)–and know so not only for their technical talents, but their unabashed views of uncommon rationality. Fellow islanders Minor Setback are an up-and-coming act worth monitoring on the local scene, and features Brandon Harrison (vocals), Corey Johstone (bass), Joshua O’Conner (guitar) and Jay Stewart (drums). If tonight’s punk show but headlined our proud punk Mauians, it’d be worth the Southside trip to get a good toss in the mosh. But add Mainland greats like Youth Brigade and The Bouncing Souls to the marquee, a great show is a guarantee. ■

Immortals will kick you in the groin in a good way BY BARRY WURST II
Immortals
★★★★★
Rated R/110 Minutes
T
he Mighty Greek Gods have destroyed the most powerful of mortal enemies, Leonardo DiCaprio and Adam Sandler! So says the Hollywood press, which is buzzing over how “Immortals came out of nowhere last week and slaughtered J. Edgar and Jack and Jill at the box office. Once you get a look at the movie, it’s no mystery why. Henry Cavill stars as Theseus, a Greek warrior in an ongoing battle against King Hyperion (played by Mickey Rourke, looking beefier than an overstuffed Slim Jim). Theseus joins a group of warriors, protects a virgin Oracle (Freida Pinto) and finds his blood soaked battles occasionally interrupted by Greek Gods who drop down from the sky and knock everyone in sight to pieces. The setting of the film is mostly on a steep cliff, as well as a castle in the sky where gods like Zeus and Poseidon have bird’s-eye views of the carnage below. Speaking of contrasts, the movie ends up somewhere between a guilty pleasure and a you-gotta-see-how-bad-
this-is curiosity. It survives a clunky start, though it never fully engages us with the details of the story or characters. For all the story set ups and character introductions, the plot can be summed up like this: Rourke kills Cavill’s mommy and Cavill spends the rest of the movie trying to kill Rourke. Plot wise, it works best when focused on the revenge drama, with two well matched leads. Cavill is currently filming Man of Steel, starring as Superman in Zach Snyder’s lavish franchise reboot, but this is his first starring role; the jury’s out if he’s a good actor but he definitely has what it takes to be an action movie star. Rourke croaks his lines with menace, playing a faithless, widowed, goateed warrior with Pegasus-sized chip on his shoulder. Pinto doesn’t have it so good: between this and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, she once again is used as window dressing in a movie that doesn’t know what to do with her. Her virgin oracle has a dubious character arch: if she sleeps with hunky Cavill, she loses her psychic powers. Oh no, what’s a girl to do?! Prince Hyperion looks and acts like Gary Oldman in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which shares this film’s costume designer, Eiko
Ishioka, whose crazily original designs once again make a strong impression. The director, Tarsem Singh, made the visually stunning but stupid The Cell and the wonderful The Fall, which made my top 10 best list in 2008. Unfortunately, this one is more like the former than the latter, though I’m grateful I saw Immortals for the action and wacko visuals, if for no other reason. Plus, in 3-D, you get blood, guts and Pinto’s butt thrust in your face. Take that, J. Edgar! Many scenes early on feel unfinished, as if the filmmakers were rushing to get to the good stuff, though it picks up once a giant tidal wave kicks the action into gear. Most of all, the film is elevated by the go-for-broke grand
finale, a huge battle so exciting, epic-sized and insanely violent, it makes 300 look like a Civil War reenactment. Tarsem has, for better or worse, made something far crazier and better than Troy or last year’s stinker Clash of the Titans remake. How nutty is this movie? It has the Mother of All Whacks to the Groin, and if that sounds like something you need to see, this one’s for you. More a movie I’d dare you to see than recommend, but whenever the gods show up to give evil a smack in the face, you’ll be glad you went. ■To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1522f

Gushing Over
‘Words Become Flesh’ BY ANU YAGI
T
here’s a framed photo on my desk at home of a motorcycle with its long rake angled as if aching further down the road. It was taken by my friend Isaac, an artist with a tender eye, some time ago. He’d happened upon the chopper–not sure how or why–carefully chalked by an unknown child on basketball blacktop in Pukalani. There are a lot of things I like about this picture: its rider is positioned with his stick legs angled-back as if on a sport bike; a naked gear radiating like the sun; a panel of knobs like the dashboard of a cockpit; a plume of fire from its exhaust pipe. And I really like that it wasn’t drawn with the thick pastel sticks of kids’ chalk big as bananas, but with the thin white teachers’ sort (an antiquated tool in the modern smart board classroom)–a nub once-abandoned, or perhaps nicked from a dusty ledge where the DOE didn’t do an update. But mostly, I like that this piece of art wasn’t created to be kept. Likely, it washed away in the rain its very first night on Earth; and were it not for my friend Isaac and his camera, would have been lost to all but the boy who made it. I suppose a lot of art is like that, for better or worse; and either way’s enough. Being a prized centerpiece to my myriad desk decorations, I look at–and think about–this picture a lot. But, I thought about it most after last Sunday night. Mom and I went to MACC’s Castle Theater to see Marc Bamuthi Joseph’s “Words Become Flesh”–a show that brilliantly examples a new form of theater (modern movement melded with poetry that beats with a hip hop heart–if I may distill it far more succinctly than it deserves) created by NYC-based Joseph, a Rockefeller Fellow who was named one of America’s Top Young Innovators in the Arts by Smithsonian magazine, among other eminent honors. But as I pulled into the damned-near empty parking lot, a quick pulse of fear drained from my brain and washed white down my face. Did I fuck up on the start time? Had we missed it entirely? I hadn’t, but a small part of me wishes I had; and that I’d gotten there long after the crowd had dissipated to endeavor for dinner. See, (for whatever reason) I get absurdly embarrassed when shows don’t sell out–or at least, don’t sell well. It’s not so much a byproduct of previewing entertainment as my buttered bread, and ergo feeling some misplaced sense of responsibility, but rather because I was an events coordinator in one of my former vocations (and if I can be so bold, also because I am now some sad semblance of an artist), and dismal turnouts make you wanna wamble down the over-thecounter isle and see what bulk toxin’s cheapest. “What happened? Where is everyone?” That’s me, pleading with my pal Paul Janes Brown (who was one of the few milling around the Yokouchi Pavilion prior to showtime) to point out whatever obvious thing I must be missing. “Oh, didn’t you hear?” I expected him to say, “The Rapture happened,” or “The frozen yogurt shop’s giving away a free iPad with purchase, tonight only,” or “Zombie Jimi is in Olinda playing Rainbow Bridge Part Deux as we speak!” Instead, Paul Janes Brown said, “It’s hip hop. People here don’t get it.” Really? People here don’t “get” hip hop? Sure, yours tru-
ly readily admits that I don’t (and a la Stan Marsh in South Park’s “With Apologies to Jesse Jackson” episode, perhaps can’t ever) really “get” hip hop, on some levels. But I was under the impression–by bumping speakers’ prevalence alone–that hip hop is one of those things that loads of people ‘get.’ Never mind that the ebonics-laced Pidgin that me n’ my peers speak is a Pidgin virtually unrecognizable from Pidgin spoken by my parents-and prior generations, thanks to American black culture’s poignant global resonance. I guess I’ll need Paul Janes Brown to explain it sometime. Call me racist (I am! We all are, really!), but I really wanted to see “Words Become Flesh,” in part, because I assumed it’d be infused with some insightful exploration of racial themes. It was. The show’s a compilation of poetic letters composed by Joseph for his then-unborn son; and beyond a brutally beautiful recordation of POV and circumstance, his contemplations on fatherhood proffered ideas about being a black man bringing a brown boy into the world. Fascinating.
those who one day won’t be able to empirically explore dogmatic differences, but will (a la Sandra Bullock in Demolition Man), academically ache to understand our depraved divides, and the equal and opposite luster of the crepuscular light that beams from between. But I digress. “Words Become Flesh.” Mmm, mmm, mmm. ‘Til the day I die I’ll gush without abandon that it was one of the most stunning shows I have–and will–ever see. The only thing I didn’t like about it is that when a performance takes my breath away, I cannot cheer with the voracity it deserves. With no filter for the faint, five black men coalesce as prismatic choral to a single psyche, voice and body concurrently expressing contemporary ideas even more honest than the ones usually kept between the ears. A creation for the stage made for the creation of flesh, it’s gift from a father to a son steeped in such unbridled passion that it’s a gift from every father to every son; from every mother for every daughter.
This piece of art wasn’t created to be kept. Likely, it washed away in the rain its very first night on Earth. I’m into that shit because I believe that the conversation about race and religion is the most important one we can have in our day and age (don’t huff and puff, hippies: I’m actually so on board with you, too, that I think ecological sustainability’s should be simply doing vs. dialogue). See, I can’t quite reconcile the inexplicable, inextricable feelings I have about my blood with my equally ardent atheistic prayer for a Star Trek future wherein which race and religion are emotionally–and likely physically–obsolete, embraced only as a colorful study of our human history as we explore space as a single race, endeavoring back to the stars from whence we came. (I’m starting to think I need to trade letterpress’s p’s and q’s for chromosomal ones, tabling prose long enough to become a geneticist who knows enough to get some sleep at night.) So the only way I can resolve the difference between my feelings and my thoughts by having fabricated a sense of duty to humans eons away, that my experience is solely for
And in every time the gasping prose moved me to tears, I cried too because so few of my Mauians were witnessing it with me. Sure, theater is only its live moment; but it pained me that the power of such a piece landed in so many empty seats. I couldn’t help but think of the photo on my desk, taken but by happenstance, of chalk dust in the wind–a piece of art never meant for permanence that found it. Then I realized how unfair a comparison that was. The chalk chopper was witnessed by as few as its maker, my friend and me–and that’s two more than enough. So while so many missed out on insights that will never again alight on our isle’s humble stage–whether they had been ‘got’ or not–it was more than enough. ■ To read more Kula Kid with links and photos and stuff, and to leave comments, visit mauifeed.com/kulakid To share or save: mt.hy.pr/1522k

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions on page 6
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
Many of the mistakes you’ve made are completely reversible. A few, however, are not. In fact, going back to even try to fix those will only make things worse, by reopening wounds that were as healed as they could ever be, and possibly creating new ones. Is there really any point in looking back so obsessively and punishing yourself any more than you already have? Quit that shit. Sometimes, you just have to let bygones be bygones, accept that you screwed up, and simply try your best not to make those kinds of errors again. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
No one wants to feel like a charity case. Unfortunately, accepting someone else’s generosity can often feel weird to many people, even if they desperately need it. You’re in a position to help others, and would love to; the trick is getting them to accept what you have to offer. Make them believe they are doing you a favor. This might involve telling a white lie and doing some Oscar-worthy acting, but this is one case where deception is in everyone’s best interest—especially because you’ll discover that once they’ve taken what you’ve offered, they’ll have made the lie truth: you are better off than you were before. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
I love my eBook reader, and it’s undeniably helped me squeeze a lot more reading into my day. But I won’t lie; there’s a part of me that mourns paper books. Being a true reading addict, I’ve always had a fondness for books, and I’m a little sad that my device has mostly made them obsolete. However, I can’t deny its convenience. I dragged my feet on the cellphone front too, and love having the thing these days. Could it be that your resistance to some of the new stuff trying to come into your life isn’t exactly reasonable? Consider that your life might actually be better if you let it in (even if you don’t want that to be the case); it’s probably true. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
It’s one thing to offer a magnanimous “mi casa es su casa,” and quite another for people to simply assume such a thing. While continuing to be open and generous is great, during the next couple months you may also need to enforce your boundaries more than you’re used to, when people assume that your laidback attitude is equivalent to a carte blanche for their bad behavior. It’s annoying to have to essentially train people to be considerate, sensitive, and aware, but there are few better than you to effectively accomplish such a task, so best to quit feeling bitter about it and just get to it.
before the week is through, you’ll be a sad panda, I promise. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
If someone is actively looking for something to get angry or offended about, you can bet they’ll find it. Your job is to figure out how legit their beefs are (and they may be more valid than you wish they were) and respond accordingly. That means separating the issue from your own (understandably critical) feelings about it. Yeah, they may be acting nitpicky, bitchy, or simply pathetically lame—but they might also be right. Kneejerk emotional reactions won’t serve you well here, so be as objective and rational as possible—even if that means coddling someone annoying or lame.
When you behave badly, people react badly. It may be tempting to try to redirect some of that negativity, perhaps by tearing others else down, or criticizing someone for an actual flaw they have, in order to distract from your own. While understandable, that’s a pretty douchebag move, and I hope that you’re mature enough to recognize it as such. You need to honestly and objectively assess what you’re up to, if possible, and either stop doing the stuff you’re ashamed of, or just own and accept it without trying to defensively counterattack anyone who calls you on it. Either option is acceptable. Pointing fingers and creating distractions to avoid responsibility? Not so much. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
Even if you’re on the right side of an issue, being an asshole about it won’t help your cause; in fact, it’s predictably likely to turn people against you and what you believe in, just because they don’t want to side with the jerk. If you can’t be classy and likeable while trying to promote your agenda, it’s probably better if you just shut up about it altogether. Being right doesn’t give you carte blanche regarding your behavior. The sooner you learn that, the better. If you don’t get this lesson under your belt

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
It’s so easy to make excuses. We all have tons of practice at getting out of things we don’t want to do—we’ve been doing it all our lives. But if underneath that resistance, this is something you actually really want (and/or perhaps need) to do, your ability to rationalize your way out of it is essentially a huge hindrance to your personal evolution. This week, you must become better at shooting down your excuses than you are at coming up with them, and quickly. Otherwise you can say goodbye to the goals you were aiming for—they’re not likely to be this easily achievable again for quite some time. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
Sure, you have mixed feelings, but that’s hardly new. What don’t you have mixed feelings about, after all? Here’s the problem: those confused emotions are showing all over your face, and it doesn’t usually read as being torn or puzzled; it comes off as being insincere. That’s not you, of course, but there’s no room for the complicated reality of the situation right now, unfortunately. That means you have to at least pretend to be a simpler person, commit to the strongest or truest facet of the emotions you’re feeling, and run with that. Try it, and see what happens. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
Some Leos suck at sharing the spotlight. Others are happy to split the attention—as long as they still get more of it than anyone else (they don’t call it “the lion’s share” for nothing). What you need to do is become one of those evolved Lions who can happily allow others their moments of glory, even if that means you’re consigned to a bit part. Trying to get “your due” will not only breed resentment, but it could rob people you love of great moments—because you’re eclipsing them. Yes, you’re wonderful, but so are many other people—let them shine, too. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Whenever you do something “on principle,” instead of from your heart, you run the risk of stirring up more shit than you ultimately want to deal with, and wondering if it was really worth it. Fighting for principles that are important to you is a part of who you are, but you need to reserve some time, energy, and strength for the conflicts that arise, not from some arbitrary rules in your head, but from how you’re actually feeling. So before you get on your high horse, make sure you’re going to be happy once you’re up there; chances are, you might want to let this one gallop on past.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
Being able to see things from multiple perspectives is usually a strength, but it can swing around to bite you in the ass. What happens when you’re determined to rationalize whatever you want to do? You turn out to be really, amazingly good at it— there’s always some angle from which your actions, no matter how objectionable, look okay. I’m a big fan of making your own rules, but sometimes this can go too far—and this week you’re in grave danger of throwing out the rulebook altogether. Like everything you do, this wouldn’t totally be a bad thing—but the negatives are likely to outweigh the positives.
