BY READERS LIKE YOU have negotiated public access in return for STILL TALKING ABOUT the required permits. Many average Maui SWINGING BRIDGES This article (“Requiem For A Stream, Sept. 22, 2011) although extremely well written and eloquent, was incredibly sad. I LOVED hiking Swinging Bridges back in the days I lived on Maui. There is nothing more beautiful than the West Maui Mountains and reading this article brought me right back. Being able to get away from touristy areas and go back into ancient Hawaii was awesome. It saddens me to see that a company can block access to ancient land. Land that belonged to Hawaiians long before a company came along and took over. Shame on you. Karma will get you in the end. You think of that every night before you go to bed at night in your mansion. -Dee, via MauiTime.com

AND OPRAH’S ROAD, TOO What a great, well-researched article from August (“Oprah’s Private Road, Aug. 4, 2011)! I loved the drawing of Oprah scooting to the beach in her in sports car. You would think that the county could

residents who live in Pukalani, for example, have hotel jobs for which the commute would be cut in half. Even now, the county should consider expropriating the road for the public benefit. The cost would no doubt be less than if the county had built the road itself, since OW no doubt has a sharp construction manager. -Allan Kennard, via email Oprah is one of the wealthiest people in the world, but what a headache, even for Oprah. -Tammy Stoner, via MauiTime.com

CLARIFICATION In “This Week’s Picks, which ran in our Feb. 16, 2012 issue, we neglected to point out that the Hawaii Secular Society’s celebration of Darwin Day at Cary & Eddie’s Hideaway in Kahului on Feb. 19, was in no way sponsored or endorsed by Cary & Eddie’s Hideway. We regret any misunderstanding.

STATE INSPECTORS TIRED OF INSPECTING NEW THINGS So it looks like Hawaii won’t be regulating ziplining any time soon. On Feb. 7, the state House Economic Revitalization and Business (ERB) Committee voted to defer HB-2060, a bill that would have established “standards and regulations for zipline companies and “canopy tour operators throughout the state. This normally wouldn’t be big news except for a few small details. First, ziplining is big now. In just a few years, lines have been strung all over Maui, Kauai and Hawaii Island. Second, a construction worker building a zipline tower fell to his death on Hawaii Island back in September–the first zipline fatality in U.S. history. And lastly, the bill died under pressure not from the state’s zipline operators, who for the most part cautiously favored the bill, but from the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations (DLIR), which would have begun inspecting zipline operators. “We oppose this measure as written as it includes recommendations that are too problematic to implement and would entail higher costs, noted DLIR Director Dwight Takamine in a Feb. 7 letter to the House ERB committee.

that the criteria for owner-users of boilers and pressure vessels are very high standards. Such inspectors hold a national certification, pass examinations prescribed by the department, develop and maintain rigorous selfregulatory regimes approved by the department, and are continuously employed by an inspection agency. Insurance companies authorized to insure boiler and pressure vessels in the state employ special boiler inspectors. There’s a good point in there, but in the process Takamina has opened a very big door: why should the state even have a Department of Labor and Industrial Relations inspectors for anything if local companies and trade groups can set up their own inspection teams and regulations?

WAYNE MONIZ WROTE NEW BOOK I’m starting to wonder if there’s anything Wayne Moniz can’t write. Seriously–the guy made his name in Hawaii writing plays, which are difficult and confining. If you can’t write effective, meaningful, real dialogue (and many, many writers can’t), then the play fails, pure and simple. Moniz has written 13 plays. He’s also written screenplays, poetry, musical lyrics and short stories. About the only thing

Overheard FIRST WOMAN: “I can’t eat because the dentist gave me a false tooth. SECOND WOMAN: “Well, what do you do when you have to eat? FIRST WOMAN: “I take it out. -Kukui Mall in Kihei, Feb. 17

Problematic? Higher costs? Shocking! Who ever would have thought that increased regulations might end up being “problematic and would incur “higher costs? But Takamine continued. Takamine noted that the fees mentioned in the bill wouldn’t even come close to paying for increased inspectors, training and the costs of flying to and from the neighbor islands, where most of the state’s zipline tours are located, which are all valid points. But Takamine’s solution was a bit more problematic: “The department questions whether owners and operators of ziplines and canopy tours should be allowed to inspect their own equipment in the manner that owner-users do for boilers and pressure vessels, Takamine added. “The department lacks the expertise to render judgment at this time, but notes

ghost story, comedy, crime, a Western, and, this time, includes several new types: a tragedy, an inspirational story, a coming of age tale, and a sports reminiscence. You catch that? Most story writers tend to stick with one genre–I like noir mysteries, but other people prefer sci-fi or vampires or historical. But Moniz likes to jump around and write about everything (well, except maybe vampires, though given an assign-

I think he hasn’t yet done is a novel, but novels are easy–you just ramble along until you’re done. It requires none of the discipline or control of short stories, which are much harder by comparison (I know this, having previously written a novel). Anyway, Moniz is at it again, this time with a new compilation of short stories called Beyond the Reef: Stories of Maui in the World. Published by Moniz’s own outfit Punawai Press in Wailuku, the book officially comes out on March 9. “Like all his previous works, the Maui native has based these stories on the people, events, and issues of Hawai‘i, with the aim of preserving its rich past, in his own small way, reads the info blurb on the back of the book. “As in his previous award winning anthology, each yarn is of a different genre:

Wayne Moniz

ment, I’m sure he’d produce a completely compelling and interesting Dracula story). Though to be honest, Moniz doesn’t just mix up genres within Beyond the Reef–he mixes it up within the stories themselves. Take “The Big L, for instance, which happens to be my favorite story in the new book. It’s a crime story, sure, based loosely on Maui’s first bank robbery, which occurred back in 1938. It’s full of period gangster talk (as well as pidgin, of course) but it’s also damned funny. Of course, Maui defies genres, and right now, I can’t think of a better writer on the island who not only understands that, but can accurately recreate it.

GMO PROTESTERS NEVER SAY DIE So those crazy kids in Occupy Wall Street-Maui, GMO Free Maui and Occupy Monsanto Maui (on paper, these seem to be different organizations, but in practice, we’re talking the same people) held a “joint effort this week to draw attention to efforts calling for the labeling of foods containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs). “This is the first SIMULTANEOUS PROTEST/rally on THREE ISLANDS, probably since they petitioned not to be annexed by the US!!! activist Courtney Bruch emailed me a few days before the protest, which took place on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at the Piilani/Mokulele Highway intersection in Kihei. “We will be protesting to call attention to the gmo corn field in full view of the hwy [sic], and because the legislature is dragging its feet in scheduling hearings for a GMO labeling bill for Hawaii. By all accounts, the protests on Maui, Oahu and Kauai went well, though given the fact that GMO labeling just isn’t even on the federal government’s list of its Top 100 priorities, it’s hard to be optimistic. ■anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1536n1

Teri Edmonds

IF THE SHOE DOESN’T FIT, JUST MAKE NEW ONES Standing next to a giant belt sander that’s putting the finishing touches on the soles, I’m really impressed that I just constructed my own pair of shoes. I’m finishing up a class at Maui Shoe Academy in Wailuku and will soon go home with an amazing work of completely wearable art. Most people take the shoes on their feet for granted, but not Teri Edmonds, the proprietor behind If the Shoe Fits and Maui Shoe Academy. Her ambition is to create a self-sustaining Maui shoe brand as well as rally behind anyone who wants to make shoes and work with leather. Edmonds has owned If the Shoe Fits for a while, but purchased the shoe manufacturing machines from Tester’s Shoe Repair when they decided to close a few years back and added them to her ever-evolving repertoire

at the store. Then she started to learn how to make a shoe from scratch. At her store you will find her own line of custom-made shoes under the Hot Biskit brand, along with a line of custom, dyeable prom shoes, shoe improvement supplies and shoe and leather repair. Edmonds runs the shoe courses right in her store, which features much of her industrial shoe-making equipment. “I’m driven primarily to create a business/industry that is self-sustaining, said Edmonds. “When the earthquake [in Japan] occurred, I knew I would need to get creative with my use of materials: using local leathers, getting creative on non-traditional binding materials, etc. I’m looking for ways to keep my business local. I’m also driven by the fact that I need to make from scratch what the shoe industry is unwilling to furnish–wide and large sizes, small sizes and custom footwear for people that can’t find shoes anywhere else. If you’re a young girl with a size 15 foot, you’re going to need a custom prom shoe, and that’s what I can now provide.

Two years ago, Edmunds held a shoe design contest and art show at Cafe Marc Aurel (now Wailuku Coffee Company) in hopes of inspiring a sustainable shoe culture on Maui. Entries had to feature products that designers could obtain on the island and there was no limit to the creativity they could draw on to embellish their shoes. Now she’s focused her attention on teaching shoe and leather arts. “I really want to see more women empowered with the skills necessary to create their own shoe design businesses, Edmonds said. “There are many aspiring young designers. My intern, Lisa Kori Chung, is a perfect example of the type of clients I hope to inspire by my school. She is an aspiring artist and designer and is interested in exploring the art of shoemaking The Maui Shoe Academy was born with three courses: “Make a Sandal in a Day, “Leather Handbag and “Make a Moccasin. For this story, I took the sandal and handbag courses. Edmonds began with a quick lesson in the history of cobbling. Shoe makers in Britain before the Industrial Revolution were highly regarded in society. It was a time when people appreciated the difficult hand labor that went into making shoes that were both fashionable and protected and warmed their feet. By the late 1800s, a “pop up shoe business was available for entrepreneurs in the U.S. People would purchase the whole set-up as a package, which came with all the necessary shoe-making equipment the shop needed. “These early retail shoe stores in the U.S. were called the 10-foot shoe store, Edmonds said. “The business model was a 10-foot building and unassembled products sent to a community farmer, typically. The farmer would assemble the shoe according to the customers’ needs. This is similar to my Hot

Biskit ‘Just for You Shoe.’ The JFYS is assembled to our customers’ specifications. Which is how I got to make my own shoes and a handbag, the latter of which required me to punch out more than 120 pukas into pieces of soft leather that I cut out according to a pattern. Later, I hammered rivets into each hole to bring the two pieces of leather together. As the handbag came to life I felt an amazing satisfaction in having made my own bag, rather than buying a faux leather import from China for $30 at the mall. Teri’s long term goal is to foster a burgeoning community of DIY designers, shoemakers, leather tanners and material weavers who create what they can from materials they find on Maui. Although her courses may seem expensive (they run $250 to $400), she compares them to another independent shoe making school in Arizona where courses cost more than double that. What’s more, her sandal-making course is now expanding to Vitec, where it will be offered for the first time on June 5 (details on that can be found in the upcoming “EdVenture Maui College Summer Catalog). Other scheduled courses for leather sandal and handbag making are posted on the mauishoeacademy.com website. Both courses are one-day events. Sandal-making classes take place on Mar. 17, Apr. 21 and May 19; handbag courses happen on Mar. 31, Apr. 28 and May 26. This summer she also plans to add shoe decorating and leather accessories classes. Courses have limited space, so call 249-9710 to enroll. “I want Maui to be a shoe manufacturing destination, Edmonds said. “Whether it be by designers creating small batches or designers with more grand aspirations. ■jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1536n2

NEWS OF THE WEIRD BY CHUCK SHEPARD

EYE-CATCHING NEWS Sri Lanka has, as an “unwritten symbol of pride and culture,” the world’s highest per-capita rate for eye-donation, according to a January Associated Press dispatch from Colombo. Underpinning this national purpose is the country’s Buddhist tradition that celebrates afterlives. “He’s dead,” said a relative of an eye recipient about the donor, “but he’s still alive. His eye can still see the world.” Doctors even report instances in which Sri Lankans consider giving up an eyeball while still alive, as a measure of virtue. A new state-of-the-art clinic, funded by Singaporean donors, is expected to nearly double Sri Lanka’s eyeball exports.

THE WAY THE WORLD WORKS Melissa Torres was a passenger in an April 2011 auto accident in Texas City, Texas, in which the five people involved were reported “uninjured” by police, and indeed, Torres was released from the Mainland Medical Center emergency room after a routine evaluation (for which she was billed $4,850). In fact, records from April 2011 until September showed her balance as $4,850. However, in December, Mainland learned that Torres had made an insurance claim against the driver and settled it for $30,000. The hospital quickly “updated” her balance to $20,211 and filed a claim against the settlement.

HEALTH AND HOUSING REFORM Hospitals, of course, are obligated to render emergency care to anyone who needs it, even to undocumented immigrants and irrespective of ability to pay. However, various state laws, such as New York’s, also prohibit hospitals from releasing a patient who has no safe place to be discharged to. A January New York Times report noted that New York City hospitals currently house about 300 of those “continuing

care” patients, with many in the five-year-long range and one patient now in his 13th year. (In some states, even, the laws’ wording permits “pop drops,” in which adult children leave “ailing” parents at a hospital when the children decide they need a break.)

NO-FRILLS AIRLINE A November Comtel airlines charter flight from India to Birmingham, England, stopped in Vienna, Austria, to refuel, but the pilots learned that Comtel’s account was overdrawn and that the airport required the equivalent of about $31,000 for refueling and take-off charges, and thus, if the passengers were in a hurry, they needed to come up with the cash. After a six-hour standoff, many of the 180 passengers were let off the plane, one by one, to visit an ATM, and eventually a settlement was reached.

h Brah! You look really cool yelling at your beautiful girlfriend in public. It really makes you look like you’re in control of your pathetic, plaid wearing, illiterate, comb-less life of yours. It’s no surprise that you’re too busy “crying over spilled milk” to notice that the incoming phone call from “MOM” is coincidentally the same phone number as your girl’s future boyfriend. I’m sorry to interrupt your very important rampage, but it looks like she has to answer this one. Do yourself a favor: once you pull your head out of your butt... COMB YOUR HAIR! ■

THE FORCE IS NOT WITH YOU In November, Rickie La Touche, 30, was convicted in England’s Preston Crown Court of killing his wife in a rage over her having allegedly destroyed the Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker memorabilia that he had collected since childhood. And in January, a judge in Portland, Ore., ordered a 45day jail sentence, plus mental evaluation, for David Canterbury, 33, after he attacked Toys R Us customers with a light saber in each hand.

ALMOST NO LONGER WEIRD Women in Dado village on the southern Philippines island of Mindanao went “on strike” last year to persuade the men to stop their fighting over land disputes. (“If you do bad things,” a September Agence France-Presse dispatch quoted one woman, “you will be cut off, here,” motioning below her waist.) These sex strikes do not always work, but, reported AFP, this one did. ■ chuck@mauitime.com

L

et’s start with an admission: we had no idea how to do another fashion issue. Sure, the staff got together and talked over various ideas and themes, but nothing seemed to click. Lucky we live Maui, where fashion doesn’t need to follow catwalk convention nor seasonal restraints. Honoring the skimpy skin savvy styles of the island was easy– Maui’s designers abound with creative ways for fashionistas to strut our stuff. But putting the clothes into an issue that looked as sharp as they did was the real challenge. So it got down to last weekend and we still had no real clue what to do. So we did what most people do in situations like this: we loaded up all the clothes in a van and started driving. But when our driver–a prince of a guy–stopped to pick up two hitchhikers, it all clicked.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23 SOURCE DECOMPRESSION PARTY WITH SEA AT LAST – Source 2012 wass a wild romp in the Keanae mud; with creative combustion at such sustain that attendees require a little dose of artsy partying just to ease back into the daily grind (never mind the need to swap success stories with fellow Sourcers). Decompression parties

thin there’s nothing quite like the cool of Upcountry to temper the blaze ignited internally by abound, but we think ra one of the biggest ragers of the year to a more sustainable simmer. PAIA FOURTH FRIDAY – Sad but true story: Our sources say there are some confused young hippies out on the North Shore who mistakenly think that “Laissez les bon temps rouler” is the name of some hip visiting DJ... Uh, wrong. It’s a Cajun French phrase which basically means “let the good times roll,” and a popular exaltation around Mardi Gras. At this month’s Paia Fourth Friday, the good times will indeed roll (with Mardi Gras flair, to boot), starring with The Conjugal Visitors who’ll parade down the street marching band-style at 6:30pm. (And if w you were lucky enough to catch this New Orleans jazz-style ensemble at the close of Source’s talent show, you’ll kn know these guys have the kind of wicked chops that’ll possess even the stiffest dancer into bustin’ a move and be beggin’ for more.) Meanwhile Indigo (149 Hana Hwy.) hosts a Mardi Gras Ball beginning at 7pm with Karen Be and Helmet Conspiracy, followed by the funkalcious Freeradicals Projekt at 8pm. Also: Thee Salon’s (109 Ba Baldwin Ave.) got a “Heart of Africa” fashion show benefitting The Masaai Womens Art Project of Tanzania, featu turing DJ Sweetbeats, DJ Kidd and African dance performances; Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon’s (142 Hana H Hwy.) stage will be rocked by Marty Dread & The Marty Dread Band plus DJ Boomshot; and Moana Bakery & C Cafe’s (71 Baldwin Ave.) home to Heart Tribe’s “Do It For The Kitty” benefit for the East Maui Animal Refuge (aka The Boo Boo Zoo), with San Francisco’s The Human Experience with David Block, plus Maesyn and Alyra Rose. Hmm... Sounds like this will be the very best Paia Fourth Friday event yet. For more shop-by-shop d auifridays.com details, see our Da Kine Calendar. Free. 6-9pm. Paia Town. mauifridays.com

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25 A TALK WITH PATRICIA JENNINGS, AUTHOR OF GEORGIA O’KEEFE’S HAWAI’I (+ MAUI OPEN STUDIOS) – Patricia Jennings will share stories and sign copies of her latest book (written with Maria Ausherman), Georgia O’Keeffe’s Hawai’i. In 1939, famed female fine artist Georgia O’Keeffe was commissioned by Dole Pineapple Company to visit the isles and paint images for use in their high-end ads; and during her stay in Hana and Wailuku was guided by then 12-year-old Jennings (who’s now 85). The event is hosted by Travaasa Hana and Ala Kukui / Hana Retreat. For more information, contact arniekotler@aol.com. (PS: As luck would have it, the timing of the talk with Jennings coincides with the second annual Maui Open Studios’ East Maui weekend, where fine artists and artisans open up shop to share their stories and techniques. See our Da Kine Calendar for more information and visit mauiopenstudios.com for detailed listings.) Free. 3pm. Plantation Guest House, above Hana Ranch Store (Travaasa Hana, fka Hotel Hana Maui, 5031 Hana Hwy.); koabooks.com

CAKE – Since their early ‘90s debut, Cake’s become a name to conjure with–though the meaning behind their name doesn’t reference dessert. “It’s like when something insidiously becomes a part of your life,” said frontman John McCrea of the band’s moniker, in a 1996 Chicago Sun-Times interview. “We mean it more as something that cakes onto your shoe and is just sort of there until you get rid of it.” As irony would have it, music lovers have been quick to not only keep Cake around, but exalt them–and for good reason. Cake’s sound is a postmodern mash of genrebending rock, funk, Iranian folk, mariachi and more; replete with smartly sarcastic lyrics–done with deadpan execution–and quirky hallmarks like their use of the vibraslap (a percussive piece that’s rooted in instruments made of animal jawbones’ teeth rattling in loose sockets). And just when you thought Cake couldn’t get any cooler, their sole post (currently) under their website’s “weekly” header reads, “GOD -- Republican presidential candidates Rick Perry, Herman Cain, Michele Bachmann, and Rick Santorum each have detailed stories about where and when and what they were doing when God instructed them to run for president. Why is God doing this?” Point is, we’ll see you at the show. Pre-show dinner made available by Three’s Bar & Grill. $39 / $49 / $89. 7:30pm. Castle Theater, MACC (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 242-SHOW (7469); mauiarts.org

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 26 HAWAIIAN COLT STARTING CHALLENGE – Sat. and Sun., Feb 2526. “Folks come to see a colt starting challenge event [because] people love to see a good wreck,” says horseman Russell Beatty. “The trick is not to get yourself into one.” What’s a colt starting challenge? Basically it’s a competition for two horse whispering contestants to tame one of two horse–each in one of two, side-by-side pens–in front of an audience. Using methods of the “natural horsemanship” philosophy, riders typically are able to ride the horse within just two hours. Beatty is one of said contestants (a formidable opponent as he’s competed in 17 different events last year alone–each in a different state across the country), and will compete against Piiholo Ranch’s Tamalyn Baldwin. Everyone’s invited to attend this free two-day event (Sat.’s event consists of the primary two-hour event, while Sun. features a ride through an obstacle course), and are advised to bring their own chairs. If you’re a horse owner who likes what you see, learn more from Beatty by signing up for his two-day clinic, scheduled for Sat. and Sun., March 10-11. “Knowledge is power,” says Beatty. “I really enjoy teaching people [how] to unlock all their horse’s secrets.” Free. 12-3pm both days. Kula Lani Ranch (2854 Omaopio Rd., Kula); 269-3508 / 250-9949; hawaiiancoltstartingchallenge.com

PROARTS PRESENTS AGATHA CHRISTIE’S THE MOUSETRAP – Thu., Fri., Sat. & Sun., Feb. 23-26 and Mar. 1-4. ProArts continues its local run of Agatha Christie’s murder mystery, The Mousetrap–the first show of their Spring season. The play’s plot might seem cliche–as producer Jonathan Lehman describes, “a group of strangers are stranded (of course) during a snowstorm [and] one of them is (of course) a murderer”–but consider the fact that Christie’s (the premier mystery writer of her time) almost single handedly responsible for popularizing such thrilling plot points, which have been ripped off by others ever since. Further, the likes of M. Night Shyamalan ain’t got nothin’ on Christie, and The Mousetrap is famous for its twist ending–of which audiences are asked not to reveal. So if you’re a spoiler-lover, you’re just going to have to bite your tongue. This no-tell tradition has been kept since the play’s 1952 debut in London’s West End (where it’s been running continuously for upwards of 25,000 shows–the longest-running of any show, of any sort, in known history). Locally, The Mousetrap is directed by Kirsti Scott, produced by Jonathan Lehman and stars Dylan Bode, Dale Button, Felicia Chernicki, Mark Collmer, Chris and Jennifer Rose, Rose Roselinsky, and Frances Tau’a. Plus, the uber talented team of Sarah Loney, Caro Walker and Bonnie Prucha are responsible for the 1950s costumes, period scenery and suspenseful lighting, respectively. $20 adults / $15 students 18-years-old and younger / $15 kama’aina nights (Thu., Feb. 23 and Thu., Mar. 1). 7:30pm Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays / 3pm Sundays. ProArts Playhouse [Azeka (Makai) Shopping Center, 1280 S. Kihei Rd.); 463-6550; proartspacific.com

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 29 LEAP INTO WHOLE FOODS MARKET’S SECOND ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION – This week marks ks s. On one the second anniversary of Whole Foods Market–which got us thinking about how weird time is. rket location at hand, it feels like just yesterday that Whole Foods opened up shop in the old Star Market orever; Maui Mall. On the other hand, it feels like Whole Foods has been a part of our island lives forever; ased perhaps because they’ve integrated so well with our community, sourcing from Hawaii-based farms whenever possible and regularly partnering with local organizations. This weekend, Whole eb. 24) Foods celebrates their birthday with a slew of festivities and freebies, beginning on Fri. (Feb. artment with complimentary birthday cake at 12pm. Then on Sat. (Fe 27), they continue their cooking demo series–created in partnership with the Maui County And on Mon. (Feb. B Farm Bureau–which features local chefs who show off their skills and share their secrets (and Whole Foods Foods’ birthday week guest is none other than Chef Sheldon Simeon of Star Noodle and Leoda’s Kitchen & Pie Shop fame). If you’re looking at these event dates and wondering why we’ve listed all this in Wed.’s This Week’s Picks, we’d first like to congratulate you on your keen observation skills–a skills–and then explain how it all goes back to the weird time warp thing. See, one cool thing about W Whole Foods is that they’re (usually) open 364 days a year, closing only on Christmas day. But seeing as 2012’s a leap year (aka an intercalary or bissextile year)–and today’s the extra day th that makes it so–Whole Foods is actually open 365 days this year! But we digress. J

erry Joseph & The Jackmormons bring a kind of biting jam band rock that’s infused with ballsy swagger and tinges every molecule within earshot with the smell of metallic bits of blood escaped from veins and hard-drawn cigarettes. “While not a household name or critic’s darling, Joseph’s the kind of musician who inspires publicity writers to shelve their tired cliches (a miracle of miracles–trust us) to instead wax poetic by penning, “[Joseph’s] an endlessly insightful rabble-rouser and back street shaman... [who] for more than 30 years [has] been strapping on a guitar and chasing down truth, understanding and soul with such tenacity and resonant skill, he’s marked as a hard charging kindred spirit of Joe Strummer, Warren Zevon and Patti Smith... [An] archetypal musician’s musician [whose] latest chapter in his long strange journey flows like glowing quicksilver through the modern

psyche; where war and disaster wrestle with hope and faith and sometimes the best option is to sashay down to the local disco to mambo with the chicks with dicks, just to remind one’s self that you’re never too old or too dead to learn a couple new tricks. Such apropos apotheosis doesn’t stop there. Joseph’s also the kind of musician who inspires the likes of documentarian Justin Benoliel (of Ramble West) to peregrinate alongside Joseph across Southeast Asia (and soon across Hawaii Nei, too, before heading for home to the East Coast and circling back to Portland) in effort to capture Joseph’s fascinating story; to “learn of his passions, all his regrets, his secrets and his demons. Benoliel says, “There is not one musician on this planet who has been through more or played for less... [His music] is beautiful, it is enlightening, and most of all it is honest. (Watch the doco trailer at ramblewest.com.) Of his longtime collaborators, The Jackmormons, Joseph says, “The reason I play in this band, the reason I go through what I go through to be in this band, is there’s always a point when we’re onstage that I think, ‘Man, if there’s a better fucking three-piece rock band in America, I don’t know who they are.’ Joseph and his Jackmormon comrades–JR Ruppel (bass, backing vocals) and Steve Drizos (drums, backing vocals)–are due to play three shows at Three’s Bar & Grill this weekend, Thu., Feb. 23, Fri., Feb. 24 (with Kanekoa) and Sat., Feb. 25. (with MOTHxp) at 9pm nightly. Do yourself a favor and be there. ■anu@mauitime.com

REBELUTION Peace of Mind (87 Music / Controlled Substance Sound Labs; 2012) It’s said that people are a product of their

environment. So, it’s no wonder that the beach town boys of Rebelution–and their music–reflect the innovative yet easygoing vibe of their Santa Barbara, CA roots. Case in point: Rebelution’s latest release, a “multi-length triple album titled Peace of Mind (released Jan. 10, 2012). The discs are like a fantasy threesome of soft reggae/rock, with the deluxe edition consisting of the original Peace of Mind album, plus Peace of Mind: Acoustic and Peace of Mind: Dub, and offer generous musical options for each track–perfect for everything

from skateboard raging to mellow backyard chilling to lazy day hacky sacking. (And while those activities are so SoCal, they’re pretty Maui-style, too.) If nothing else, 36 tracks for the price of 12 is certainly worth buying. But I was totally stoked by Peace of Mind’s positive, uplifting lyrics–which sound like the Rebelution boys’ minds were on some really heavy optimistic sunshine shit (and I’d like to know where I can get some)–as they give-off a message similar to that of my favorite motivational quote, “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade. And much like lemonade, Rebelution’s Peace of Mind is a little sweet and a little tangy, meanwhile totally smooth and refreshing. All albums reviewed in this space are available at Maui’s only record store, Requests (10 N. Market St., Wailuku, 244-9315)

FILM

Great Actors, Lousy Movie This Means War has been done to death BY BARRY WURST II This Means War

★★★★★

Rated PG13/98 Min.

W

hen two secret agents and best friends (Tom Hardy and Chris Pine) discover they’re dating the same woman (Reese Witherspoon), they act like ridiculously competitive jocks in high school pining over the head cheerleader. The two spies battle each other, physically and mentally, in an effort to win over their dream girl, utilizing every lavish gadget and technique at their disposal. Their behavior feels more Stephanie Meyers than Tom Clancy, as this sort of female wish fulfillment fairy tale is usually reserved for dueling vampires and shirtless werewolves. This is clearly a fantasy, as very little is plausible, but, considering the talent involved, it’s not very exciting, either. McG, the film’s director, made the underrated and impressive Terminator: Salvation and the bubbly, better than expected Charlie’s Angels but, despite his sporadic success at action and comedy, his latest has so-so fight and stunt sequences and only broad, obvious

laughs. Even with lowered expectations, This Means War is a mild, shallow, vanity vehicle for Witherspoon, who looks great but barely seems to be putting any effort into this. She coasts through her role, while her costar, pop diva Chelsea Handler, steals the movie. Despite her robotic line readings, the ever popular Handler adds sass to her every scene by appearing to improvise her every line. This would be fine, were Witherspoon not an Oscar winning actress and a first rate comedienne; Witherspoon’s non-performance is as depressing as Julia Roberts smiling her way through her own lesser vehicles. The men don’t have it any better: it’s nice to see the usually intense Hardy smile so much but he’s clearly miscast. He may be a wildly versatile, deservedly up and coming actor but light comedy doesn’t appear to come easy for him (though the script may be as responsible as his performance). Not only does Pine have no chemistry with Hardy (they’re supposed to be longstanding best friends, which never comes across) but there’s nothing he does for this role that John Krasinski couldn’t have done better and with more ease. The three leads are attractive but the awkward contrast of acting styles makes the love triangle as

Three’s Company was better.

hard to believe as everything else here. It gets better as it goes along and has an amusing mid-section, with the two spies using covert technology to sabotage one another’s attempts at courtship. Yet, nothing here is remotely new: the comedic surveillance scenes, as well as the overall tone of the movie, is on loan from True Lies, there’s a climactic car chase out of Mr. and Mr. Smith and the bit where Witherspoon gives herself a pep talk in a bathroom mirror while a violent fight breaks out is a direct steal from Cameron Diaz’s identical moment on an airplane in Knight and Day. For such a lavish studio movie, the CG effects are strikingly phony looking and the terrific Angela Bassett is totally wasted in a generic supporting role. The color palette of some scenes (especially Witherspoon’s workplace)

are obnoxiously garish, while many scenes, including the big action sequences, are edited in ways that cut them too short. Everyone in the cast will do better next time, as Hardy has The Dark Knight Rises this summer and Pine will return soon to his breakout role as Captain James T. Kirk. I worry about Witherspoon, though–I hope movies like this and Water for Elephants won’t make audiences forget what an exceptional actress she can be. It may be lively and diverting at times, but, instead of settling for a True Lies wannabe, shouldn’t audiences just watch the real thing instead? ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1536f

LEGENDARY PUNK: ILL REPUTE AND M.D.C. – Sat., Feb. 25. You read that right: in a rare double billing, Ill Repute (California) and M.D.C. Ill Repute formed in the early ‘80s in Oxnard, California (just outside Los Angeles), at the center of the infamous “Nardcore punk scene. Meanwhile, M.D.C. has been a major force in the punk world for more than

30 years, and their music’s swayed Ian MacKaye of Fugazzi to vegetarianism and gave cause to be held by the Secret Service after playing two songs for the Pope in San Francisco in 1987. The kiddies, however, might know them best for their song “John Wayne Was A Nazi, which is featured in Grand Theft Auto V. MOONLIGHT SERIES FEATURING RAUL MIDON – Thu., Mar. 29. Blind since infancy, American singer-songwriter and guitarist, Raul Midon straddles the genres of Latin, folk-pop and jazz with show-stopping vocals and dazzling instrumental technique. Combining his soulful tenor and syncopated, percussive guitar with improvisational mouth trumpet sounds, Midon is an exciting one-man show. $28/$33. 7:30pm A&B Amphitheater / Yokouchi Pavilion, MACC (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 242-SHOW (7469); mauiarts.org DAVID BROMBERG TRIO – Fri., Mar. 30. David Bromberg is a master practitioner of folk, blues and bluegrass, and his trio features Mark Cosgroe (guitar/ mandolin/vocals) and Nate Grower (fiddle/mandolin/ vocals). Known as a “hired gun” for recording artists, Rolling Stone raves “Bromberg... makes every track shine, like the A-list session man he’s always been”; meanwhile Jerry Jeff Walker says, “[Bromberg’s] the reason man created stringed instruments. David touched them with a lover’s fingers and they moaned that true love right back at him. Wood and wire and flesh spoke.” $28 / $35 / $45 Golden Circle. 7pm doors / 7:30pm show. Iao Theater (68 N. Market St., Wailuku); lazarbear.com NA ALI’I OF COMEDY – Fri., Mar. 30. For the very first time, five of Hawaii’s comedy legends–Frank De Lima, Ed Kaahea, Mel Cabang, Andy Bumatai and Augie T– unite onstage for what’s sure to be the biggest local comedy show of 2012. De Lima’s a 14-time Na Hoku Hanohano award winner whose family friendly humor has been entertaining the islands (especially school children; as all my local peeps can assuredly recall “Going on a Buta Hunt” and “Peanut Butter and Jelly”) for almost four decades. Kaahea is the last surviving member of the iconic trio Booga Booga, meanwhile the big names of Cabang and Bumatai have been

synonymous with Hawaiian comedy for more than 30 years, each appearing on numerous TV commercials and local programs. Augie T.’s an inescapably popular contemporary comedian–his voice and visage all over radio and local TV–and is at the heart of the revival of Hawaii’s comedy scene. $22.50 / $35 VIP (includes meet-and-greet with the artists after the show). 7:30pm. Castle Theater, MACC (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 242 SHOW (7469); mauiarts.org

ICKE, ICKE BABY... STOP, COLLABORATE AND LIZARD: A DAY WITH DAVID ICKE – Sat., Mar. 31. David Icke’s a former “Professional Soccer [sic] player, journalist [and] network anchorman with the BBC” turned “full time investigator into who and what is really controlling the world” (davidickebooks.co.uk). Icke’s authored sixteen books including “The Biggest Secret,” which Richard Kahn calls the “Rosetta stone for conspiracy junkies.” At this day-long lecture event, Icke will discuss myriad topics including “The Moon Matrix,” his “most staggering revelation” of all, in which he says that the moon is a huge “spacecraft... home to the extraterrestrial group that has been manipulating humanity for aeons.” Presented by Global Media Productions. There will be three meal breaks during the event with pre-sold lunch ($10) and dinner ($15) options made available by Vasi’s Gourmet Catering. (Note: There’s no guarantee that food will be available if not pre-purchased. Visit mauiarts.org to view menu and order.) $39 / $69 / $99. 9am registration / 10am-10pm program. Castle Theater, MACC (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 242-SHOW (7469); mauiarts.org

SAVE THE DATE: AN EVENING WITH W.S. MERWIN – Sat., Mar. 31. W.S. Merwin has been a force in American poetry for 60 years, beginning when W.H. Auden selected his first collection, A Mask for Janus (1952) for the Yale Series of Younger Poets. Though his style has evolved much over his long career, he has remained influential, receiving nearly every major award for poetry, including two Pulitzer prizes: in 1971

for The Carrier of Ladders, and in 2009 for The Shadow of Sirius. In 2010, W.S. Merwin was appointed the Library of Congress’ 17th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry. This event is co-presented with University of Hawai‘i Foundation. Free (however, the event is ticketed as limited seating is available). 7:30pm. McCoy Studio Theater, MACC (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 242-SHOW (7469); mauiarts.or

HOROSCOPE

Sign Language BY CAERIEL CRESTIN PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

The way you see the world simply isn’t the way others see the world, most of the time. The negatives you perceive in your own life, in particular, are generally not on anyone’s radar but yours. So why are you trying so incredibly hard to get someone else to see it your way, when your way…kind of sucks? They have a happier view of the situation, so might I suggest that instead of squandering your energy attempting to get them to agree with your dismal perspective, why don’t you work on bringing yourself to theirs?

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Saying, “no” is often the kindest thing you can do. Why, then, do you often have so much trouble actually doing it? It probably seems harsh to you, and because you’re a nice, polite, respectful person, it pains you to ever deny someone something. However, please acknowledge that giving into this propensity isn’t doing them, or you, any favors. Even though it probably feels good right in the moment (particularly if they gush with gratitude), it so often leads to hurt feelings and drama down the line. Those are far worse than if you’d simply said, “Sorry, no,” right from the get-go.

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS

...to questions on page 4

1: E–All of the above. 2: E–A and B only. 3: D–Bed bugs.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Cruelty towards animals or other people (whether through maliciousness, insensitivity, or neglect) is something you generally can’t tolerate. I admire that about you. I know we’re always urging you to be less stubborn and more flexible, but here’s someplace where it’s better if you don’t bend. Rigorously expecting those around you to be compassionate, patient, giving, and humane is something that will make everyone better; allowing compromise in this department is just letting yourself and others down. Hold the line, and absolutely require kindness as a prerequisite for being in your life. If someone can’t deliver, dump them.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

Sometimes when dealing with irrational (or crazy) people, it causes us to behave in ridiculous or insane ways. This is when your natural responsiveness and sensitivity is a kind of weakness, because by adapting to an unreasonable situation you make yourself into a nut. This is when a reality check is massively in order—if you can’t deliver one to yourself, surely you know someone who can slap you back to earth. Then it’s up to you to gently (and lovingly, if possible) enforce logical, sane standards and boundaries, and not endow the borderline-crazies in your life with more power than they should rightfully have.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Sometimes we do awful things under the guise of “just looking out for you.” Occasionally that means we needlessly shield someone from the truth of a situation because we “don’t want them to be hurt.” Of course, such a plan is usually shortsighted, only making it worse when they find out anyway. Other times, we say we’re looking out for someone when we’re really just spreading gossip or looking out for ourselves. Truth is generally the best policy, but this week really try to take yourself out of the picture (or put yourself in others’ shoes in it) and gauge how much good or harm you could potentially do—before you get involved. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

There are lots of different ways for people to be supportive. Just because they’re not doing what you want them to do doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t love you or want you to succeed. Try to appreciate all the great respect and encouragement you’re already getting rather than focus on the bits and pieces you’re still not getting. It’s certainly okay to ask for those, but whether you get them or not, move on. Harping about what more people could or should do for you is only likely to get you less, in the long run—and piss people off in the short run. Get over it. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Being right isn’t the virtue you think it should be. Sometimes, it’s reason enough for someone to dislike you—provided you’re petty enough to make a stink about it. I love that you’re so smart and able to accurately assess situations—that you’re right as incredibly often as you are. But unless that trait’s joined by humility and tact, it’ll breed more resentment than affection. Usually, when you’re right, it’s okay to gently speak up in time to help someone prevent a mistake, but after shit’s gone down, it’s best to just keep your mouth shut about it. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

You love being generous, but sometimes your generosity is marred by an internal tally sheet that usually shows you racking up lots of points, which consequently makes you feel like the recipients of your benevolence are mostly selfish ingrates. Gifts, however, should be freely given, and while there may be a grain of truth to your perception (humans are inherently selfish, by and large), focusing on that won’t lead to anything good. Take pleasure in the giving, in and of itself. If you receive something, go ahead and delight in it—as long as you don’t feel bad if nothing (or something less than what you expected) is all you get.

I’m a huge fan of trusting your instincts. How far you go based on them, though, is another story. Let them set you on the path that’s right for you. Use a gut-check to verify your course along the way. But also allow your rational mind to exert some influence over the speed with which you travel that path. Taking things too slow (because of fearfulness, perhaps) is just as bad as going to quickly, so be observant and logical when setting (and frequently adjusting) your pace. Where you’re going is an instinctive thing. When you get there—that’s for your mind to decide. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

You’re nowhere near as good a liar as you think. In fact, most of the lies you get away with are simply because those you tell them to would rather believe them than the truth they secretly know, or else can’t be bothered to call you out on it. Although there are occasionally good and kind reasons to practice some forms of deception, they are few and far between; honesty is almost always the best policy—and that’s true for you now, as well. Tell the truth, even if it makes you look bad. The lie you’d tell in its place makes you look far worse. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Hey, Leo. Consider tact. Yes, the truth’s the truth, and I admire your willingness to just speak up. That takes a certain kind of wonderful bravery. However, there are times when your bluntness is completely unnecessary. It would be awful if you felt compelled to change the essential nature of your message; however, won’t you consider editing and improving its delivery? For example, even if something did not require careful consideration, or didn’t cause you pain, or doesn’t matter to you at all, it might still be kinder to pretend it did, at least a little.

Just because someone thinks they get to call the shots doesn’t mean they necessarily should. Bossy people tend to only get bossier when they’ve screwed up, so instead of being punished for their mistakes, they’re often empowered by them by those too hurt or scared to stick up to them. You’re not one of those people, though. Sometimes, you’re too laid back to put someone in their place—but let this be one of those times where you bother to call those Bossy Bessies out on their pushy behavior. Let them get as indignant as they want, but that still doesn’t put them in charge—which is a very good thing.
