9TH LIFE HAWAII SNIPES AT MAUI HUMANE SOCIETY
I was distressed by this article as it appears to place blame on two animal–support groups that are trying to reduce the deplorable kill rate at Maui Humane Society by offering free/low cost dog and cat sterilizations (Mauisphere, Apr. 5, 2012). The kill rate for cats over the past few years has been between 70 percent and 80 percent. 9th Life Hawaii provides roughly 30 percent of their feline sterilizations free and SPCA Maui provides roughly the same percentage free. Therefore, if people are unable to receive a snip certificate from Maui Humane Society, they can call 9th Life Hawaii at 573-3365 and schedule a free/ low cost sterilization for their cat or call Maui SPCA at 280-0738. 9th Life Hawaii is holding Spay/Neuter clinics on May 5 and May 12 and two more clinics in June and July and a HUGE, multi-day clinic in September. SPCA Maui is holding a clinic on April 22 and other dates to be decided. The Maui Humane Society (MHS) should be thrilled that two more animal welfare groups are helping the community sterilize dogs and cats. If you truly love animals, the goal should be to limit their population nonlethally, to reduce the horrendous kill rate at MHS. Cities, towns, communities all over the United States have embraced No Kill and they do it by implementing the NO KILL
Equation which places a heavy emphasis on early sterilizations. Your article stated that MHS is “considering having a monthly cap to ensure SNIP funds run through the year.” The Maui Humane Society should not throw up roadblocks to 9th Life Hawaii or Maui SPCA. These two organizations are trying to sterilize as many dogs and cats as they can. And 9th Life has always offered free sterilizations in hardship situations so those people needing SNIP certificates should not have to worry when SNIP certificates are unavailable. Instead of limiting the amount of SNIP certificates to these two hard-working animal welfare groups, MHS should be asking the county to increase the SNIP funding so more dogs and cats can be sterilized, thereby reducing the canine and feline population which should decrease Maui Humane Society’s kill rate. I have to ask: Why aren’t they doing just that? Or is MHS content to keep killing animals? For more information about the part that sterilizations play in the No Kill Movement, we suggest going to the website of the No Kill Advocacy Center at nokilladvocacycenter.org. 9th Life Hawaii is bringing Nathan Winograd, executive director of the No Kill Advocacy Center to Maui on August 25, 2012. He will be the keynote speaker at the very first No Kill Conference in Hawaii and will discuss the No Kill Equation in detail.

Talk of the Island
BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO
ISN’T HC&S SWEET?
Everyone had a good Easter weekend, right? Didn’t eat too much chocolate, or get too much sun? Good and good. Me, didn’t do much besides hang out, visit some friends and relax. It was very chill, and part of the general happiness I felt was probably due to a nice letter I received from Rick W. Volner, Jr., the General Manager of the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company (HC&S). “Dear neighbor,” it began (all my closest friends and relatives call me “neighbor”). “With the start of the harvesting season, the HC&S Pu’unene mill will return to life, and you will begin to see our sugar cane harvesting and planting equipment in the fields and on the plantation roads once again.” Isn’t that just precious? The mill’s coming back to life! And you know what that means: icky smoke from big sugar cane fires pouring into the morning sky, depositing ash, soot and all kinds of throat-scratching particulates for us to inhale. Of course, Volner apparently doesn’t think these things are much of a problem. In fact, he’s under the impression that we all love his company’s sugar cane burning. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, in advance, for your support of our farming operations on Maui, this being our 140th harvest season,” he wrote (Volner thanks people for supporting his company twice in the letter). “We could not fulfill our commitment to agriculture, to our employees, and to the community without your kokua. We know we must continue to be a good neighbor and earn that support.” Isn’t that nice of him? He’s thanking me “in advance” for my “support.” Guess he must be a very busy man who’s just too busy running around general managing the mill to ask me (or any other “neighbor” around the island) how we actually, honestly feel about his company burning more than 35,000 acres around Central Maui every three years. In the old days–I’m thinking the first 50 or so harvest seasons–the company was all-powerful, and could give a damn what residents thought of the filthy practice of burning sugar cane in the field before harvesting. But these days, popular opinion NOW UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT! TREAT
can be a real bitch for a big corporation, Sweet as Sugar especially as online social networking tools make it easier for people to communicate their frustrations and allergic reactions to people across the globe. It’s no longer enough for a company like HC&S to simply portray sugar cane farming as a fait accompli for Maui. Though they’re still doing that: “Farming is a challenging business, and we are trying hard to reduce the impact of noise, dust and smoke, all of which are invariably part of the farming process,” Volner added in his letter, pretty nakedly implying that the smoke and pollution caused by cane burning is an inevitable part of the “farming process.” No, for a company like HC&S to survive, they have to get out front of the social net-

work, perhaps even create one of their own, to show the people who live and work on Maui that the company is just another caring, helpful “neighbor.” Not only does Volner ask in his letter that people visit the company’s website (hcsugar. com) but he also encourages them to sign up for their new cane burning “notification tool” Nixle by texting the word “sugar” to 888777. Now that is helpful! For the first time, residents can find out there’s going to be a burn before it happens–before it wrecks havoc on their sinuses–and then.... what? Get an extra box of tissue at the store? Pack a ventilator before driving off to work? Fly to Oahu until the smoke clears? Don’t worry–Volner isn’t looking for applause. he’s helped out his neighbors. “We are determined to keep our 36,000 acres in green cultivation and our family of 800 workers employed,” he wrote at the close of the letter. “Please know that our focus continues to be on the long-term, always with Maui and our neighbors’ best interests at heart.”
THIS WEEK IN KIHEI
So you can add social worker Netra Halperin’s name to the already long list of people who want Republican state Representative George Fontaine’s job representing South Maui in the Hawaii Legislature. In addition to Fontaine and now Halperin, former Representative Joe Bertram III, Maui Boys & Girls Club executive director Colin Hanlon and grad student Kaniela Ing have all declared themselves candidates. Of course, whoever wins the race will have to deal with this stunning, new reality: the roundabout at the intersection of Piikea Avenue and Liloa Drive in Kihei is finally open! Now on the mainland, such a thing as the official opening of a traffic roundabout is not really news (other matters, like the introduction of a new brand of laundry detergent or the whereabouts of Khloe Kardashian, usually take precedence). But here on Maui, a roundabout is new and magical, worthy of a grand mayoral visit and a special Hawaiian blessing. Hey, county officials began construction of the vaunted roundabout by giving away free Hot Wheels cars to those who went to a Saturday seminar on roundabout driving and safety, so it’s only fitting that the official opening is just as big. Remember, a roundabout is a new and dynamic way to turn a corner or just keep driving straight. It’s modern and efficient and like nothing else on Maui... wait, what do you mean there’s already a roundabout in Kihei at the intersection of Waiapo Road and Oluea Street? Damn you, secret roundabout! Damn you to hell! ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1543n1

PETER PAN DANCES AT ALEXANDER ACADEMY
Alexander Academy of Performing Arts will be presenting their production of Peter Pan A Dance Production this weekend. Based at the Old Kula Community Center, Alexander Academy is home to more than 220 students with five teachers instructing 40 classes a week. The idea to do a production culminated in summer of 2011, with auditions occurring this January. “The excitement from the cast has been the most thrilling and fulfilling part of the production,” says Academy Director Danelle Watson. “The cast of 160 is full of enthusiasm and energy. The storyline is charming, fun and full of adventure. It’s been a lot of fun to see ladies play pirates! Our school is mostly ballet and we have loads of very talented classically trained dancers. We are feeling proud of the product we have to show for all the work.” For the leads, graduating senior Kelsey Greenway will play Peter Pan, and Hanna Claerbout will play Wendy. Camille Erdman will play Tinkerbell, Amelia Nelson will play Captain Hook, graduating senior Tatiana Camit will play Tiger Lily, Adam Bartlett will play John and LeiHina Gibson will portray Michael. Hallie Hunt-Armato, Amelia Nelson, Ashiya Corder and Watson
herself choreographed the production. Cynthia Murphy founded the Alexander Dance Academy 21 years ago. She passed away last week, and this show has been dedicated to her. “She taught a very strict Vagonova-style ballet class,” says Watson, who has been director since 2009. “Her high expectations created discipline, integrity and results. She had a reputation of being very strict but everyone knew they were loved. In return, she received respect.” Murphy began teaching dance at Pookela Church in Olinda, then moved the dance school to Kula in 1995. The school has the distinction of being the only donation-based dance academy on Maui. “This allows for everyone to be able to make dance a lifestyle and receive the benefits that dance gives–poise, confidence, grace, strength–regardless of financial abilities,” says Watson. “This philosophy makes for a very happy dance community that we call our dancing ohana. It also provides a healthy learning environment. These girls may otherwise never have met or spent so much time together.” Watson says the school’s biggest challenge with the show has been raising money, but the dedicated families at the studio have been tremendously helpful with fund-
raisers. Donations for the silent auction that will be held before the show and during the intermission of both shows have also been helpful. Among the donations is a copy of The Hunger Games signed by Woody Harrelson. The show runs this Saturday, Apr. 14 at 6pm and Sunday, Apr. 15 at 2pm at the Maui Theater in Lahaina, home to Ulalena. Tickets are available for purchase at brownpapertickets.com/event/214310 or by calling 800-838-3006. After the production, new students will be accepted for the academy waiting lists. Registration for the summer session begins May 1. For more information visit alexanderacademy.info or call 808-878-8970.
MAUI SPRINGBOARD FORMS NEW BUSINESS SOCIAL NETWORK
The recent beta release of Maui Springboard means a new platform for business interaction is now available on Maui. Maui Springboard is an online business networking site created by Ron Lunan. The site plans to develop as a free niche social network for Maui’s professionals and is welcoming prospective members to sign up at Mauispringboard.com. The network aims to help members increase visibility and influence among their customers, peers and business partners. Maui Springboard intends to include elements of services like LinkedIn and also create in-real-life (IRL) business mixer events. “We’re on a small rock that’s part of the most isolated land mass on earth,” says Lunan. “We also have an economy built largely on tourism. That doesn’t leave much room for local business. I think that’s why we’ve seen such a push by the local government to provide services and events that help connect us. There hasn’t been a private solution to this local problem. This is where Maui Springboard will really shine.” Lunan emphasizes a concept called “social capital,” which is invested by each user based on the typical interactions of humans from email to gesture.
We Like You Too!
“Social capital is the oldest and most used transaction human beings have ever had,” says Lunan. "We spend and receive it when we write an email, talk on the phone, kiss our kids goodnight, or motion to our fellow cave dweller to pass the meat. It trades more often than all forms of monetary capital, and its effects are more influential. Few of us identify these little (or big) social interactions as a form of trade, but they are.” Some users have already found utilizing the network have helped them. Ermin Fergerstrom, an organizer for the upcoming Harness Economic Leadership for Prosperity (HELP) Expo to be held Apr. 13, says he found several inquiries about vendor tables and sponsorships from Maui Springboard. “On Maui, most people will wait until the last week to register and/or pay at the door,”
Ron Lunan
says Fergerstrom. “I am confident that we will fill the room if not sell it out. The results so far, from a small group on this newly formed site, has been amazing.” Maui Springboard will hold an online brown bag session on Apr. 24 discussing the value of a Facebook page for your business. You can sign up at Mauispringboard. com. If you have questions you may also engage with Maui Springboard on their social network sites at Facebook: facebook.com/ MauiSB and Twitter @MauiSpringboard. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1543n2

NEWS OF THE WEIRD BY CHUCK SHEPARD
EVERYONE BODY-PIERCE!
Like most states with active trade associations of barbers and beauticians, Iowa strictly regulates those professions, requiring 2,100 hours of training plus continuing education–but also like many other states, Iowa does not regulate body piercers at all (though it forbids minors from getting tattoos). Thus, the puncturing of body parts and insertion of jewelry or other objects under the skin can be done by anyone, with or without formal training, under no one’s watchful eye except the customer’s. (A few cities’ ordinances require a minimum age to get pierced.) Said one professional piercer to the Des Moines Register for a March report, “The lack of education in this industry is scary.”
CONTROLLING THE WATERS
A February bill in the Wyoming legislature to prepare the state for possible secession authorized a task force to consider establishing a state army, navy, marine corps and air force, and one amendment added the consideration of purchasing an aircraft carrier. Wyoming is, of course, landlocked, but it does have the 136-square-mile Yellowstone Lake, though that body of water is high up in the Teton mountains. (The aircraft carrier amendment was defeated even though 27 representatives voted for it.)
GOVERNMENT INACTION
With a National Institute of Justice grant, the Houston Police Department was able to learn precisely how embarrassingly bad it had been in investigating rape cases. In February it conceded that, as of December, it had on hand 6,663 untested rape kits (some from the 1980s) taken from rape victims at the time of the crime but then apparently ignored. (Not all are significant: In some rapes, a perpetrator has already confessed or been convicted, and still other victims recanted, and in still others, the statute of limitations has run out.)

ART THAT SHOULD STINK
In March came word from Taiwan that the prominent Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts had awarded a prize worth the equivalent of $13,500 to student Wong Tin Cheung for creating the face of a man by using the artist’s own urine. His piece, “Blood Urine Man,” presented to judges in a toilet bowl, used urine of different colors, supposedly to match the pigments of the Marvel Comics superhero Iron Man. ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1543n3

Here’s Here’s a a handy handy guide guide
for your (possible) decision to abandon television in favor of starting an organic farm on Maui
Dear Ms. Winfrey,
Howzit?
As Maui’s most famous snowbird, you can probably imagine the buzz around Maui–and Hawaii– that’s been created by, of all things, a simple business filing in the Hawaii Department of Commerce & Consumer Affairs. But hey, what do you expect when your people (that would be Bob Greene Enterprises, which is run by your personal trainer) suddenly file a new business registry for “Oprah’s Farm, LLC” in Hawaii? We know you have substantial holdings on Maui, so can you really blame us for dropping everything and speculating that you, Oprah Winfrey, Goddess of All Things Media, might just chuck

APRIL 12, 2012
everything for the farmer’s life? Apparently, you even joked about it a few months ago. “In January, several websites quoted a story in the National Enquirer saying that said [sic] Winfrey had joked that she’d move to the Valley Isle to run an organic farm if her new cable channel didn’t work out,” the Pacific Business News reported on April 4. While PBN couldn’t confirm if you’re actually moving here full time, the news organization did add that “If there’s one thing that’s known about Oprah, it would be that almost anything she touches turns into gold.” The key word in that last sentence is, as you well know, “almost.” As you know, Bloomberg reported last month
By Anthony Pignataro
that your Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) “probably lost $107 million on a cash-flow basis in 2011” and was poised to lose “$142.9 million in 2012.” That’s not good, even for someone who lives in a 42-acre estate in Montecito, California and owns at least six other homes around world. So if you do decide to give up on the Mainland rat race and move to Maui permanently to grow greens and onions and strawberries without the harmful pesticides we’ve all come to hate, here are a few handy tips and suggestions the MauiTime staff threw together to help make your move a bit more pleasant. We know you already own considerable property Upcountry and in Hana, but there’s a huge difference between part-time and full-time residents. Huge!
1. THE PALI
It doesn’t happen very often, but sooner or later you will get caught in a Pali traffic jam. If (given the recent spate of bad accidents plaguing the island, it’s more likely when) there’s a fatality on the Pali, the Maui Police Department will shut the whole thing down. If you get caught in the snarl, which could last for six or more hours, the best thing to do is DON’T PANIC. In fact, why not turn the misfortune of others into an opportunity for you: keep a stash of a few dozen issues of your latest O Magazine in the trunk and just hand them out to those fellow residents and tourists stranded around you. Nothing passes the time better than reading a good magazine.
2. YOUR PRIVATE UPCOUNTRYKIHEI ROAD
Yeah. Here’s the thing on your road: yes, it’s your road. You built it, you own it. Private property is king, yada yada. Just please don’t lord it over us residents who don’t own our own roads and can’t use yours (you also might want to think–and this is only a suggestion–about contributing even a tiny sum of your billions and billions of dollars to a few local charities and non-profit organizations around the island. Just a thought). Oh, and if you’re on your road and you see joggers or just people out hiking across the Haleakala Ranch, just smile and wave. They’re not doing you or the ranch any harm, and only want to experience a taste of the grandeur that is unspoiled, undeveloped Maui.
3. TELEVISION
I know organic farming is like, back-breaking work that requires waking up insanely early, but if you happen to get the bug to go back into television, you might want to give Jay April a call. He’s the president and CEO of Akaku, Maui’s public access cable channel. They have pretty limited resources over there (it’s public access, after all) but still, they do good work and put on some very interesting, very informative community programming. And best of all, it’s free! Anyway, I don’t seem to have April’s extension handy, but if you call the station’s main number (808-871-5554), I’m sure somebody there will patch you through.
4. THE FAIR
Especially if you’re going to be an organic farmer, you’ll have to go to the Maui Fair. Everyone else does, and so should you. Now there are many schools of thought on where exactly lies the best place to park when going to the fair, but me, I like to just bite the bullet and pay $5 to park right at Baldwin High. Sure, it costs a few bucks, and there’s usually free parking within a mile’s walk, but consider it an easy way to give back to the kids at Baldwin, who, given the state of public education in this state, can use the money.
5. GROCERY BAGS
Unlike California, a couple years ago Maui
County instituted a full-fledged ban on plastic grocery bags. Now grocery stores still stock plenty of paper bags, but all the most environmentally sensitive residents just bring heaps of reusable bags with them when they go shopping. So if you happen to have some old tote bags lying around, bring ‘em, because you’ll need ‘em.
6. STATE ID
Now I know you probably will want to keep your California drivers license because there are still a couple years to go before you have to go through the hassle of standing in line at the DMV, and that’s cool. But you will want to get a Hawaii state ID, and fast. The reason? Two words: Kamaaina discount. You may have more money than God, but I seriously doubt anyone stayed rich by paying full price on Maui for a filet mignon. You should make an appointment, as it can get busy. In fact, things were so jammed when I went to get my ID that Deidre Tegarden, the Governor’s Representative on Maui, actually processed my application. Anyway, call (808) 243-5798 to set up an appointment. It’s totally worth it.
7. FOOD
Now I’m just going to assume that I don’t even have to tell you about the magical wonders found at Komoda’s Bakery in Makawao, but you may not know that the best chili chicken on Maui is found at Pukalani Superette and the best mac salad ever is found at the Takamiya Market dairy case over in Happy Valley. You’re welcome.
8. PIDGIN
No boddah.
9. CANE BURNING
Oh, and if you happen to wake up in the morning and see what looks like a gray-brown mushroom cloud rising from the valley floor in Central Maui, don’t worry too much. No, we haven’t just been nuked–it’s merely what locals call “Maui snow,” the ash cloud created when Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar burns sugar cane in the field–much the way they did it 140 years ago. It shouldn’t bother you too much in Hana, but it might mess with the view from your Upcountry abode. Yes, it’s dirty and filthy and yet another reason for the world to stop eating so much sugar, but the best thing I can tell is just to get used to it.
10. SHOES
Lastly, I saw an article on Oprah.com saying that every woman needed just six shoes, but couldn’t help but notice that none of those six shoes was a pair of slippers. This might be a problem, because on Maui, people wear slippers (what you Californians call “flip flops”) pretty much all the time (or just go barefoot, if they can). If you don’t have a good pair of slippers, the best thing I can suggest is heading to Long’s. They have a really good selection. But if you don’t find anything you like there, try K-Mart. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1543L

Can Kono Akao Please Everyone?

hef Kono Akao has just opened Kono’s on the Green, one of the only restaurants on the mauka side of Piilani Highway (Highway 30) in Kihei. Although you wouldn’t think that slight elevation would boast such gorgeous views, the place is breathtaking. The spot has been closed for five years and Akao has done some major renovation. The place was last well known for hosting some great house music and late night dancing, but Akao has no plans to go in that direction. Instead, his menu is huge and the focus is simply on great food. “I want a place where the whole family can come eat and get what they want,” he says. “Father might want a nice steak, mom wants a spectacular fish dish, but the kids don’t want to eat that. So I have options like spaghetti and pizza, too. We want to please everyone.” That’s hardly an easy task, but Kono’s on the Green is approaching it with a lot of finesse. They serve breakfast (8am11am), lunch (11am-2pm) and dinner (5pm9:45pm), with the dining room doing pupus and drinks only from 2pm to 5pm.
Breakfast runs the gamut from the classics like multi-flavored pancakes, French toast, Eggs Benedict and omelets. Kono’s Sunrise Breakfast is eggs and roasted red potatoes for $6, and they also have bagels,
The dining room is split into two sections, with table seating and a lounge containing low comfy couches that surround the front windows that run ceiling to floor. It’s a nice set-up because even if the lounge is occupied, those seated in the dining room can still see over to the view. There’s a grand outdoor lanai to enjoy as well, should you prefer open-air dining. You can get the full menu in any of these locations as well as the bar. The restaurant is decked out contemporary in dark colors and beautiful lighting. The globe lights that hang over the bar are gorgeous. The bar also features fine cocktails and beers on tap, ranging from $3.50 to about $9.50. Bar Manager George Salamack says the specialty cocktails like the Absolute Lemonade and Ocean vodka Cosmo. The wine list is formidable and they have quite a few sakes, too. Manager George Kitagawa says he and Akao learned the restaurant business from old school Japanese chefs who threw pots and yelled in their faces with more wrath than Gordon Ramsey. They laugh about it now, but say it has established a commitment to excellence and the discipline to succeed. Akao also owns the Kihei Italian eatery Antonio’s, and was careful going into

Continued from page 13 poisson du jour, and got a lesson from Chef Akao in sauce au epices. He let me gawk at the spice list he keeps on his iPhone for this sauce. It was incredible! The fresh fish of the day was opakapaka, pan fried and served with this French sauce that uses more than 30 spices for its sublime flavor. The presentation was gorgeous with more fresh herbs stacked up and over the fish as well as poached leeks, grilled tomato and asparagus. Add a few drops of basil oil to the epice and this amazing dish is just $30. Other sea inspired dishes sounded wonderful: seared ahi with sautéed mushroom and spinach, salmon with ponzu, scallops and lobster ($26-36). To get a taste of the land portion of the menu, I tried the Kurobuta pork chop ($32). Kurobuta pork is a Japanese specialty that has its roots in the English pedigree Berkshire pork traditions. Kurobuta is known for its juicy marbled meat that’s a tad darker and more flavorful than run of the mill pork. Akao serves his bone-in with a generous portion of meat, caramelized and crusted just right on its exterior. The roasted red potatoes and mixture of Big Island Alii mushrooms and shiitake mushrooms complete the dish, which is served with mustard seed
sauce and an apple cider and creme fraiche. It’s a traditional dish with classic styling that’s executed well. When Kitagawa came by to check on me, I had to finish every morsel of meat off the bone before they took the plate. Other land menu items include rack of lamb, duck breast, strip loin, rib eye and filet ($28 to $36). The dinner menu is well rounded with appetizers like wild mushroom olive and pine nut ravioli, ahi carpaccio, beef tataki and more, all ranging from $9 to $15. Soups and salads run $7 to $10, and there’s also pizza and pasta from $12 to $24. The lunch menu is also full of options that include salad, sandwiches, panini, pizza, pasta, burgers and steak ($6-$15). The pupu menu is just a segue from lunch with “Fries that don’t need ketchup,” shichimiseared ahi, a burger, pizzas and quesadillas. It’s also just about the only time you can’t get a fantastic salad in the restaurant. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso

MARK JOHNSTONE – So I was at the Rick Vito/King Paris concert a couple weeks back when the drunk guy dancing next to me asked, “Which one do you think is hottest?” While I’m sure he meant belly dancers, I replied, “the keyboard player.” That pianist is Mark Johnstone, and you can catch his bluesy, fingering finesse this Thursday night in Haiku. No cover. 7-9pm. Lilikoi Grill Restaurant & Wine Bar (Haiku Marketplace, 810 Haiku Rd.); 575-2629; lilikoigrill.com

FRIDAY, APRIL 13 KINGS OF SPADE AND THE FREERADICALS PROJEKT – Dear readers, time-travel with me: it’s far into the future and you’re lying on your deathbed. You’ve got a fake hip and your synovial joints make crunchy sounds like boots on snow. Hey, it’s the winter of your life, after all. Sure, every breath makes your body shudder in agony, but you sure as hell ain’t thinking, “Damn, I really wish I didn’t do so much booty shaking and fist pumping at that Kings of Spade and Freeradicals Projekt concert.” Nope, you’re calling the nurse to refill your morphine drip and bring you another pudding, thinking of how it was all totally worth it. $15 advance. 9pm doors /10:15pm s h o w (both venues). Fri., Apr. 13 at Stella Blues Cafe (1279 S. Kihei Rd.) / Sat., Apr. 14 at Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon (142 Hana Hwy., Paia); frpandkoslive. eventbrite. com
MAUI ROLLER GIRLS: THE YARD SALE – “Set your alarm folks, this one is going to be a doozie,” say the Maui Roller Girls. “It’s a yard sale of epic proportions–all in one place, on one day, for just a few hours.” Score awesome items–like furniture, baby gear, TVs, stereos, clothing, kitchen items, linens, decor and sporting goods–while enjoying low prices, a fun crowd and easy parking. Double whammy: there’s also a bake sale. (Read: omnomnom carbs to fuel a secondhand shopper’s sweetest dream.) Proceeds benefit this roller derby team’s travel expenses for inter-island competition. 7am-2pm (Early Birds will be hogtied–so don’t bother). SATURDAY, APRIL 14 MAUI HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S 3RD ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF QUILTS – Swaddled in goodness, the Celebration of Quilts at the Bailey House Museum is the perfect event for anyone who appreciates homemade history. Pour a cup of lemonade, pad around on the museum grounds’ sunlit lawn and view showcase-quality quilts strung between large hala and kukui trees. And inside, the museum’s antique quilts are on special display (like my favorite, an eggshell-and-saffron colored piece called “Na Kalauna Me Na ‘Ilima,” from the D.T. Flemming collection), augmented by other examples on loan from private collections (such as the sweet potato-patterned “Ona Ona,” courtesy of Jamie Laniakea Clark). $10 admission / free for keiki 12-years-old and younger. 10am-3pm. Bailey House Museum (2375-A Main St., Wailuku); 244-3326; mauimuseum.org

At this original musical adaptation of the classic Cinderella story, keiki are provided with wands to conjure a bit of their own bibbity bobbity boo magic. This wacky, family-friendly version of Cinderella is produced, directed and written by Jonathan Lehman, and stars Casey Murphy as Cinderella, Mark Bolden as the nerdy Prince Rupert, Rose Roselinksy as The Baroness (Cinderella’s snooty stepmother) and Dale Button and Kristi Scott as the devious stepsisters. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18 AARP’S “YOU’VE EARNED A SAY” EVENTS – Aging isn’t scary in and of itself, but our Social Security crisis certainly is. With their “You’ve Earned a Say” events, AARP Hawaii is “taking the debate about the future of Medicare and Social Security out from behind closed doors in Washington so you can have a voice.” These free discussions are open to the public and “coincide with the release of a national survey of adults showing strong belief in the importance of Social Security and Medicare, but lack of confidence in the programs being there throughout retirement... a sentiment [which] holds true across political parties and age groups.” Free. 9:30-11:30am. he Gangster Gazette reported that Louie Marie, “reputed speakeasy boss [and] arts patron,” was recently “plucked from the river three weeks after his mysterious disappearance.” “On account of the slugs in his cranium,” Police Chief Cameron told the Gazette, “we suspect foul play.” So who bumped off the Big Cheese? Investigations by both police and P.I. Pinkerton are ongoing. Until his untimely death, Marie was the owner and operator of “the renowned Juice Joint nightspot.” His wife, Rosie Marie, is now the sole proprietor. This Saturday (Apr. 14), the widowed Marie is throwing a party to “send Louie off in
style... pullin’ out all the stops for this one; big, loud, and a wild crowd [because] that’s how my Louie liked it.” The Gazette reports that “most of the town’s high rollers and heavy hitters will be on hand to see that Louie gets his due,” and all proceeds benefit “Louie’s soft spot,” the Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA). Want to play along with this “whodunit” murder mystery, set in the Roaring Twenties? Swell, ‘cause your attendance supports MAPA’s educational programs. Plus, you can participate by wearing period attire, playing a role and trying to guess the murderer’s identity (or simply sit back and enjoy some giggle water and grinds). Murder at the Juice Joint tickets must be purchased in advance by contacting Peggy Harmon (244-8760; peggy@mauiacademy. org) and tickets start at just 150 clams. It’s an interactive caper that you won’t want to miss... if you know what’s good for ya. ■ anu@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1543p

proach of the 1986 cult hit April Fool’s Day (my favorite ‘80s slasher movie) but a more heavy handed approach and generous budget. Whedon’s input is clear from the first scene, as his dialogue ranges from sharp and hip to Dude, Look How Awesomely Clever I Am! His movie is clearly in love with itself and fanboys may love it as well, even if it is not on par with online word-of-mouth sensations like Attack the Block and Let the Right One In. Genre fans may find this satisfying for simply being so impressively crazy, as it references, to name just a few, everything from The Evil Dead, Monsters Inc., The Grudge and Men in Black. It’s a messy, bloody mix but there are some stunning visual moments that will stay with you.

his long awaited, greatly anticipated horror film was shot back in 2009, shelved for years after its studio went bankrupt and accumulated enormous word of mouth, internet buzz and acclaim following a series of festival screenings. It was co-written and co-produced by Joss Whedon, the fanboy favorite who created Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly, and stars Chris Hemsworth, who made this long before he went on to play Thor. Now that the film is finally unveiled, its biggest asset is how truly unusual and downright insane it is. The opening scenes are intriguingly peculiar, as we meet a couple of chatty, white collar guys (well played by Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford) who work in an unnamed, mysterious place of business. Their scenes are interrupted by scenes involving a group of teens who are on their way for a weekend of
sex and skinny dipping at a deserted cabin in the woods. How do the two storylines go together? I won’t reveal anything else–the less you know going in, the better it will play. The Cabin in the Woods is refreshingly different, especially during the wild, go-for-broke climax but awfully pleased with itself and never at all scary. It can’t live up to three years of hype, speculation and festival praise and only easy to please horror fans will declare it the second coming. More of a high tech, truly sick black comedy than something to lose sleep over, all of the characters are likeable but one dimensional and, once all the pieces come together, the story reveals itself to be bold but lacking any sense. Even with the enticing, what-does-it-allmean puzzle of going back and forth between the teens and the white collar workers, the first two acts really aren’t that different from the generic slasher flicks we get every couple of months. We even get teased by how much cooler the film could have been, which feels like a cheap shot. Only during the final moments does it fully cut loose and show us something we truly haven’t seen before. It has the radical, expectations-defying ap-

Curiously, it ends with a special effects shot that might have been cool in 2009 but was topped and better produced for the recent Wrath of the Titans. As cynical, violent and heartless as the next horror movie, though I’ll take something overreaching but definitely new like this over another remake or the further adventures of Jigsaw. The plot is more of a horror fan’s checklist than a story that makes sense enough for sequels to follow. Watching this is like having a steady diet of greasy junk food: you’re left feeling bloated, but only after enjoying a guilty, warped bit of fun. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1543f

Mahalo Ke Akua BY ANU YAGI
“Dreamt of a doorway / That opened to everything / And I’m reaching towards it / Drifting backwards / Drawing the curtains / Windows inside my head / Maybe I’m only making mirrors.” – Gotye’s “Making Mirrors” (Making Mirrors; 2011)
I
t sounds hyperbolic, but it’s true: I woke up Easter morning feeling reborn. After a weekend at the RitzCarlton Kapalua for the 20th annual Celebration of the Arts, I was transformed. Oh, what an event! What an uncommon gem! Every Easter for two decades running–in just a few sweet, powerful days–The Celebration nurtures fledgling flight in a Phoenix of culture that’s colloquially called Hawaiian. What a privilege to have witnessed it. More humbling, what a gift to have been a part of it. Because experiences like The Celebration can’t help but be reflected upon with a grateful heart, I’d be remiss to not first express my utmost mahalo to Clifford Nae‘ole, his ‘ohana, the exemplary team at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, and all of the event’s organizers and cultural advisors–namely (at the apologetic risk of missing many), Kumu Hula Hokuani Holt, Kahu Kapi‘ioho‘okalani Lyons Naone, Kumu Ramsay Taum and Kupuna Sam Kahai Ka‘ai. Also, my sincere thanks to every artist, musician, scientiest and practitioner who give life to the The Celebration, year after year. Such generosity and vision. And of course, my gratitude to the guests who came (as I did) to be fascinated by fine art and aloha at its quintessence. Mahalo, everyone. And mahalo ke akua. My manini column’s no adequate place to write about my time at The Celebration, but it’s a start to what will surely be regular reference. For anyone of kanaka maoli blood or spirit, The Celebration affords a unique chance to talk story with our race’s
most venerable teachers. For me, the quality of those discussions were like rain-soaked crepuscular rays upon seedlings of desirous inquery into what it means to be Hawaiian in 2012 and beyond (assuming it matters at all). That’s important to me for no other reason than my belief that, if for any purpose, we exist to explore where we came from and where everyone can go from here. And I feel damned lucky that a wretch like me is graced with getting to call myself human, let alone something as delightful as “Hawaiian.” From that, The Celebration crystallized in me the idea that a living culture requires constant participation and active discourse. And gosh it felt good to do that while sitting in the lap of Kapalua luxury–the oh-so fancy Ritz overrun by proud brown bodies all laughing, creating and philosophizing about our home and history. I could get used to that. And why not, right? Days were made full with lectures and activities (almost all free and open to the public), beginning with ceremonial plunges into the Kapalua surf at dawn, ancient oli (chants) and cultural protocol. Nights of intelligent, playful conversation were fueled by rich ethnic food and libation. This, with rainstorms, sunshine and chic accomodations, infused the weekend with a rainbow of aural ambience: sharp crimson, diffused amber, and stone-meets-sky hues. But later I realized that of all this great, gorgeous Hawaiian stuff, the best thing about The Celebration doesn’t happen at the event at all. Rather, the best thing’s in how The Celebration translates afterward; how it augments your life forever and for the better. See, after all that, I was hardly eager to return to the MauiTime deadline grind and the hoarder’s squalor I call home and office. The Celebration had just filled my evermore-longing heart so much that I was sure it’d soon burst. So what could I do? Go to the grocery store? The office? Straight to bed? No. What I needed was to weep and purge in the churning river water of ‘Iao Valley–a sacred place that I’ve frequented my whole life and that’s constantly calling. So on the way home from the Westside, though my old Toyo’s gas gauge dipped well below E, I detoured to the cool valley. I like
seeing people enjoying themselves in the places I love and happily that day, the park was full of tourists and locals alike. It was Easter, after all. And for me, it was the 15-year anniversary of my Christian baptism there. But because my thinking’s evolved since I was 11, it seemed appropriate that I return to that exact baptismal pool for another dip. To undo and redo. To affirm. To give thanks... On the way back to my car I passed another, where two women were packing their things, about to drive away. One was wearing a wool cap, from under which peeked the unmistakable wisps of a chemo-thinned hairline. Ah, a cancer sister! I always feel a pang to connect when I see someone else who’s in the thick of their battle, still reaching for the world now better-knowing its worth. But I walked by silently, as I always do, embarrassed. What would I say to her even if I had the courage? Who am I to say anything at all? Just then, that rainbow aural rush came again, as if sweeping down the valley’s ridges on a winged, mercurial mist. A confidence that I did not have before The Celebration turned my heels back toward the young woman in the wool cap. See, The Celebration also taught me that being Hawaiian doesn’t stop with the discussion or doing of expressly Hawaiian things. It means letting the spirit of those things reflect in every aspect of our lives. So with that woman, in that moment, the only way I knew how to expess aloha was to attempt to share how, for me, blood cancer had been a gift. An adventure. A reckoning. An intriguing, loving time to be cherished. Look, I don’t remember exactly what I said other than it was awkward and fumbling. And I can’t presume it meant anything to her, though it meant something to me. But I tried to tell her I was eager for her. I tried to tell her I was proud of her apparent spunk, and for her having sought out a place like ‘Iao Valley. She then told me she’d come there to shave her head, on Easter, in the afternoon light of ‘Iao... I’d never until then been more grateful to smile with a stranger. ■ To share or save: mt.hy.pr/1543k

Often your role as truth-teller and bullshit-exposer is an unenviable, thankless one. It causes you tons of stress, rarely results in satisfying paybacks, and gets you into trouble more often than not. However, every once in a while, you get the romantic comedy movie resolution, where the douche gets his comeuppance, you are praised for your astute and courageous words and actions, and everyone is grateful that someone, at least, was willing to say what everyone was thinking, and change things for the better. While you may not get exactly that result this week, you’re likely to get at least an appreciative pat on the back. So there’s that.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
Sometimes when you have good news or fortune, you feel weird sharing it with others who might not be in such a great place in their lives, or are actively suffering from some misfortune. However, there’s no reason you should censor your own happiness; if you wait until everyone else is happy before you share your joy, you’ll never get to share it at all. Presentation, however, is key. If your tone is, “Here are all the ways I’m glad I’m not you right now,” your message will be understandably ill-received. However, if you instead, offer a distraction and your message is, “Things will get better for you, too, in time,” your listeners might prove grateful instead of resentful. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
Transferring a relationship from one world to another (friendship to romance, say, or family to business) always brings with it numerous complications. These are by no means insurmountable— provided you acknowledge and address them without blinders or deception. This new way of relating requires entirely different rules than your old connection; trying to continue as you have, in this new context, would just lead to relationship-destroying disaster. Throw out (or at least shelve indefinitely) the old rulebooks and sit down, right now, to write some new ones from scratch—before you take another step. You’ll be glad you did, later.
I generally feel that keeping secrets ends up causing more pain than telling the truth—a tough lesson for you Scorpios, who keep your cards so close to your chests. However, just imagine the pain your silence (or deception) might cause, because in the absence of the truth, people might imagine scenarios that are far worse than what’s actually happening. Allowing them to live with those excruciating fantasies isn’t fair or kind. This week, be kind and let them in on the truth, so they can be released from the crueler lie they’ve made up.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)
While surely there are some things you’d rather not talk about, be realistic. Acknowledge that sometimes your silence on the subject will prove more intriguing to others than just speaking up about it would be. Keeping mum will only pique their curiosity, forcing them to relentlessly harangue and stalk you until you spill the beans, anyway. While it might be embarrassing or painful to share something like this, it’s still less of a hassle than the alternative. Of course, if you insist on finding that out the hard way, go ahead and stay closemouthed. You’ll wish you hadn’t, later.
Whenever I see someone with a controlling, jealous, or generally bitchy, unpleasant partner, I wonder why they put up with it. Amazing sex alone can’t justify the misery they surely suffer out of bed, but again and again I see awful people shacked up with long-term partners. Perhaps they simply feel hopelessly trapped. The one thing I can safely conclude, however, is that none of those suffering partners are Sagittarians. Having eluded many, you know how to escape traps with ease. Consider showing someone a way out of the one they think they’re stuck in. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
Because you’re by nature a generous and nurturing person, you end up with people relying on you for far more or far longer than they should. While you certainly invited them to benefit from all the wonderful things you have to give, at some point they crossed a line, or perhaps simply didn’t move on in the timeframe you thought they would. Now it’s time for you to play mama bird and gently push those reluctant chicks out of the nest. They may not think they can (or want to) fly on their own, but you know better—and the only way they’ll learn is by doing.
While it may seem that someone’s taking advantage of you (and perhaps they are, in a way), consider the alternatives. Don’t compare their actions to what a saint might do in their place, but rather to what you’d have to put up with from a stranger filling their shoes. I’m willing to bet that what they’re asking from you is still far less taxing than what you’d be forced to “pay” if virtually anyone else was doing what they’re doing. So deliver with a smile, and remember that they’re doing you a favor, even if it doesn’t always feel that way. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
Cutting other people some slack is this week’s theme. Sure, you wish everyone could abide by your ideal standards, but of course you know that’s not always the case. Overlooking others’ shortcomings or failings is the kind and generous thing to do here, provided they’re not actually huge, destructive character flaws. Most likely they’re only things that annoy or inconvenience you, so getting over them is in everyone’s best interest. Addressing them would only make you seem petty, while letting them go will probably add to your air of benevolence and wisdom. Does it seem like a no-brainer yet? It should.
It’s sweet of you to have taken on so much responsibility. Of course your intentions were almost saintly, but by now you’ve probably realized that you may not be able to deliver on everything you promised, at least not at the level you imagined. It’s time for you to start seeking alternatives. That’s not simply announcing you can’t handle this stuff and dumping some of it on whoever’s close at hand. You still have a duty to find an appropriate surrogate to absorb some of these responsibilities—yes, another arduous task, but not as taxing as being buried under the massive weight of everything you’ve taken on. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
While you are arguably the most practical sign in the zodiac, sometimes when someone else wants to implement their less efficient or sensible idea, you dig in your heels, and can have a huge problem letting them get their way. There’s always room for compromise—only sometimes you’re simply too stubborn to see or acknowledge it. That can lead to some massive disagreements over truly tiny issues, simply because of your persistent resistance. Sure, their idea may downright suck, compared to yours. But being part of a team means being willing to lose, and letting others take the lead. Try that this week, please.
When noises at night keep you from a good night’s sleep, sleeping with earplugs is a practical and effective solution. But wearing those earplugs during a conversation whose content you don’t want to hear is a less laudable way to address the situation. Life is full of stuff you’d rather ignore, but doing so is childish and, ultimately ineffective. Pull out the earplugs, remove the blinders, and face the uncomfortable or painful truths you’ve been trying to shield yourself from. Yes, this will suck—but you’ll find that once you’ve faced them, you’ll be able to happily move on from them and throw out those earplugs and blinders once and for all.
