book industry ‘moves at a glacial pace,’ according to Jones. He talked to countless numbers of literary agents, only be denied with the ‘default answer in the publishing industry: no.' Then the couple’s friend, The Color Purple author Alice Walker, stepped in. Jones said she read his book and helped him find a book agent, which then led to a deal with publishing company Algonquin Books.” Ahhh, of course. So a complete unknown can get a major book deal–when said complete unknown is a friend of one of the most famous authors in the U.S. Astonishing, no, but it is interesting.

REPORTER TRADES MAUI NEWS FOR SPIRITUALITY & HEALTH

MOLOKAI AUTHOR GETS BIG BOOK DEAL

Got a call last week from Michele Holley Jones, who lives on Molokai. “My husband is publishing a book, a debut novel, that is getting a lot of national and international attention,” she said in a voicemail message. “It might be an interesting feature for your newspaper because it is quite astonishing.” Her husband is Brandon Jones (Brandonjonesauthor.com) and his first novel, All Woman And Springtime, really is getting published by Algonquin Books this spring. The novel follows the plight of two teenage North Korean girls caught in human trafficking. Now as a budding novelist who, like many, struggled to find a book publisher, Holley’s message sounded miraculous. Then I found a June 1, 2011 Molokai Dispatch article on Jones’ book. “Jones began writing the book in February 2009, finishing nine months later,” reported Mark Hayden. “Ordinarily, the

Speaking of writers who are personal friends, I’d just like to say that my job just got a whole lot easier. On Friday, Apr. 13, Maui News Reporter Ilima Loomis announced that she’s exiting the paper. “I will be leaving The Maui News on April 24 to take a position as managing editor of Spirituality & Health magazine,” she told blogger Ian Lind. “I was not actively looking for a job, and was fully prepared to stay with The Maui News for the long haul. But when this opportunity came along, there was just no way I could say no.” Spirituality & Health (spiritualityhealth. com) is a bi-monthly that’s based in Traverse City, Michigan but maintains an office on Maui (the editor-in-chief is Karen Bouris, the director of the Merwin Conservancy in Haiku. “We report on the people, the practices, and the ideas of the current spiritual renaissance,” states the magazine’s website. “We are open to all points of view on spiritual questions, drawing on the world’s wisdom traditions as well as science, psychology, sociology and medicine.” It’s quite a different assignment from investigative news and covering Maui govern-

Ilima Loomis ment, but we wish her the best.

MAUI NEWS CUTS WAY BACK

Of course, one thing Loomis made clear to me is that her leaving had nothing to do with the state of The Maui News, or the fact that the paper recently announced some pretty severe cutbacks. “One of my biggest concerns has been that my leaving will appear to be a vote of ‘no confidence’ in The Maui News,” she emailed me. “It’s really hard to feel now like I’m abandoning the paper when it needs me most. However, that is balanced by the fact that my decision to leave at this time will almost certainly save the job of a less senior employee.” See, we live in a time of media cutbacks. Newspapers are shrinking, trimming the size of their broadsheets and the scope of their coverage. The explosion of the Internet has led to both the proliferation of information (some of it important) and the destruction of the old advertising-based business model that’s kept newspapers running for the last century. It’s never a good thing when a news organization cuts staff. Doesn’t matter the newsroom or the location. News outlets, including the supposedly obsolete newspapers need more people on the payroll, not fewer. Nonetheless, I wasn’t too surprised to read an unbylined story in the April 11 Maui News explaining how a new labor contract just ratified by employees will mean serious

employee and benefit cuts. Among the cuts: • “hours will be reduced by 1.25 hours per week starting Aug. 1, with the hours to be restored July 31, 2014" • “higher share of medical premiums” • “workforce reduction of 14 to 18 employees” Maui News Publisher Joe Bradley called the deal a “vote of confidence” in the future of the paper, but it’s hard to agree. Some employees, according to the story, will leave the paper voluntarily. Others will get sacked. It’s an old story: a newspaper cuts sections, coverage and staff, until it’s a shell of what it was just a decade ago. Then the owners wonder aloud why people don’t read it anymore and companies stop advertising, and then start cutting again… The cuts announced last week should have been expected. Back in March 2011, The Maui News had sought to eliminate 10 positions. During a meeting with labor leaders at the time, Bradley made a brutal case. “At Wednesday’s meeting, Bradley asked the unions to consider a proposal to reduce the workweek from 37.5 to 35 hours–a 6.6 percent pay cut–and to delay by one year a 3 percent snapback (2 percent in wages; 1 percent in pension) set to occur on July 1,” stated a Pacific Media Workers Guild (which represents some of the paper’s employees) press release issued at the time. “In support of the request, he provided union leaders with details of sharp advertising revenue declines in a number of key categories.” In May 2011, the Maui News employees agreed on a new labor contract that would rescind that layoff notice and prohibit further layoff notices until April 1, 2012. Apparently, Bradley and the Maui News owners (that would be West Virginia-based Ogden Newspapers) didn’t waste any time once the deadline passed. Of course, it could be worse. In March, Bradley announced that his paper would now partner with Monster.com to provide a better resource for those in Maui County who lose their jobs. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1544n1

NEWS OF THE WEIRD BY CHUCK SHEPARD

FRENCH FULL-BODY HEALTHCARE

As the U.S. government’s role in health care is debated, the French government’s role was highlighted in February with a report on Slate about France’s guarantee to new mothers of “10 to 20” free sessions of “la reeducation perineale” (vaginal re-toning to restore the pre-pregnancy condition, a “cornerstone of French post- natal care,” according to Slate). The sessions involve yoga-like calisthenics to rebuild muscles and improve genital flexibility. Similar procedures in the U.S. not only are not government entitlements, but are almost never covered by private insurance, and besides, say surgeons, the patients who request them do so almost entirely for aesthetic reasons. The French program, by contrast, is said to be designed not only for general health but to strengthen women for bearing more children, to raise the birth rate.

LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS

Two men were robbed in a motel room in Bradenton, Fla., in February by Cedrick Mitchell, 39, who pulled a handgun on them, but lost it in a struggle when the men started to fight back. One of the men pepper-sprayed Mitchell, sending him fleeing. He returned a few minutes later and begged to buy the gun back for $40, but all he got was another pepperspraying. Police arrested Mitchell nearby.

DRILL, BABY, DRILL

U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas may have been joking, but according to a February Washington Post story, he seemed serious at a Natural Resources Committee hearing when searching for yet more reasons why the U.S. should support oil drilling in Alaska. Caribou, he said, are fond of the warmth of the Alaskan pipeline. “So when they want to go on a date, they invite each other to head over to the pipe-

line.” That mating ritual, Rep. Gohmert concluded, is surely responsible for a recent tenfold increase in the local caribou population.

BOMB THREAT?

In assigning a bail of only $20,000, the judge in Ellisville, Miss., seemed torn about whether to believe that Harold Hadley is a terrorist–that is, did Hadley plant a bomb at Jones County Junior College? In February, investigators told WDAM-TV that the evidence against Hadley included a note on toilet paper on which he had written in effect, “I passed a bomb in the library.” However, no bomb was found, and a relative of Hadley’s told the judge that Hadley often speaks of breaking wind as “passing a bomb.” The case is continuing.

I also hope that you inhale the fumes of all the nail polish that you stole and die somewhere real soon in great pain and agony. TRAIN FUN

Melvyn Webb, 54, was acquitted in March of alleged indecent behavior on a train. An eight-woman, four-man jury in Reading (England) Crown Court found Webb’s explanation entirely plausible–that he was a banjo player and was “playing” some riffs underneath the newspaper in his lap. “[S]ometimes I do, with my hands, pick out a pattern on my knees,” he said. (On the other hand, the female witness against him had testified that Webb “was facing me, breathing heavily and snarling.”)

IRONIES

Earl Persell, 56, was arrested in Palm Bay, Fla., in February when police were summoned to his home on a domestic violence call. Persell’s girlfriend said he had assaulted her and held her down by the neck, and then moments later, with his truck, rammed the car she was driving away in. The subject of the couple’s argument was legendary singer Tina Turner and her late, wife-beating husband, Ike. ■ chuck@mauitime.com

ometimes gift shopping can be a real drag. You have to brave traffic, find parking and then finally have to actually find that perfect gift. My new favorite gift shop, Maui Country Store, makes gift shopping a breeze. They offer a great selection of made-on-Maui food items found all over the island. Everybody eats, so food gifts are always appropriate. They are located at the Ma‘alaea Harbor Shops, with plenty of parking so dealing with traffic is a non-issue. The shop is small, just 290 square feet, but it’s jam-packed with jammy goodness. It’s charming inside, with wooden cabinets housing jars of Maui Preserved products and other goods. A table in the middle displaying art glass by Rick Strini is next to local fudge by Maui Fudge and Lahaina Fudge Company. Shelves along the wall hold jams and jellies of every tropical flavor. There are also sugarcane sticks, seasoned salts, jam, jelly, chocolate, pancake mix, nuts and spices. Everyone likes a little taste of paradise, so whether you go with something sweet or savory, there’s a made-onMaui treat for everyone. They even stock sugar- and gluten-free items. Of course, made-on-Maui products weren’t shipped here, so the carbon foot-

Our mission is to support local sustainable agricultural products; advocate and educate the public about local sustainable agricultural products to reduce our impact on the environment and create healthier lives.” The store opened in December 2011. ey, isn’t this issue’s cover dope? It’s colorful, creative and, best of all, completely authentic. It was really quite simple: our art director Scrappers and his family picked up trash along the coastline between Kahului Harbor and the Jack in the Box on Lower Main in Wailuku. In just one hour they had filled three garbage bags (and the marine debris from the Japanese tsunami hasn’t even gotten here yet!). Using some of the more colorful scraps they laid the cover out on a nearby beach. To celebrate a good job done well they recycled what they could and put the rest in a dumpster. So we at MauiTime would like to thank all the people on Maui who’ve been carelessly dumping trash (or just ignoring marine debris that washes ashore) for making our cover so easy and straightforward–we couldn’t have done

it without your help.

What’s that you say? You don’t like how our island looks when it’s covered in garbage? Then do something about it. You can start by reading this issue. We have stories about the rise of nonpolluting electric cars, clothing recycling, newspaper recycling and how one small company turned recycling into a growing business. If you want to act, Surfrider Foundation often does beach cleanups around the island (they’ve scheduled one for Kahului Harbor on Apr. 21; go to surfrider/org/ maui for more info) but the best thing you can do is JUST PICK UP GARBAGE YOU SEE AROUND YOU. Make it part of your routine. And, if you can, keep a mental note of all the things you do that pollute our environment, and do what you can to minimize it. We’ll all be glad you did. ✿

Rise of the Electric Machines WHEN WILL MAUI BE READY FOR ELECTRIC CARS?

The future

for electric vehicles (EVs), cars that emit no pollution whatsoever, on Maui is bright, but you’d never know it by seeing the charging station at AAAAA Rent-A-Space in Honokowai. In late March, the company opened a Level 2 charging station there (it takes six hours to power up an EV) to great fanfare. With energy coming from a massive 600-kilowatt photovoltaic assembly on the roof, the whole setup should be a model for

By Anthony Pignataro future electric car charging centers. “Responsible stewardship of the land is one of our core values, and we’re proud to contribute to our islands’ efforts to wean itself from imported oil,” AAAAA owner Jim Knuppe said in the Apr. 5 Lahaina News. After hiring local public relations firm Gilbert & Associates, the station opened to great media attention, which was helped by a visit from Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa. But since then, business has been non-existent. “We’ve had no business,” said AAAAA Manager Liz May. For Anne Ku, director of the Maui Electric Vehicle Alliance (MauiEVA), a kind of users group for the owners of the 50 or so

EVs on the island, it’s no surprise that none of the owners of the island’s 50 or so EVs have charged at AAAAA. “They charge too much,” she said, referring to AAAAA’s $10/hour charging fee. At that rate, EV owners would spend $60 charging their cars, which is more than gas-powered auto owners currently pay, even with gas prices hovering near $5/gallon. Instead, Better Place, a private company that builds EV stations around the world, runs seven other charging stations around the island that don’t charge EV owners anything to use them (though two are located in hotels–the Four Seasons and Marriott, both in Wailea–and are only for use by hotel guests). A History of Recycling on Maui

If

By Dina Noyes

recycling began in any single place on Maui, it was most likely the old Makawao Dump on Makani Road. In the 1970s and ‘80s, there wasn’t any organized recycling on Maui, but there was the Makawao Dump. It was a dumpster diver’s dream. There was no heavy equipment working the pile, just unwanted goods sitting out in the open, exposed to the rain, rust, sun and termites. Then there were the people scrambling over the pile, some dumping and some taking. You could furnish an entire home from the Makawao Dump. Cars could be restored, houses repainted, windows embellished with stained glass. You could also find great old books, antiques, silverware, linens, pots, pans, ancient metal trunks, family pictures of people you never met, garden hoses worn by the sun, shovels, trowels, tables, chairs, fans, electrical wiring, copper, old boots, sneakers, working pens, tins of broken seashells, surfboards, ropes and even saddles.

Well, it was Makawao, after all. In 1977, EKO Compost began turning green waste into high quality soil, and they’re still at it. A year later, Maui Scrap Metal, (otherwise known as “Apanas”), opened a drop site for a few recyclables such as commercial metals, cardboard and paper, though they’ve been closed for years now. By 1990, Maui Recycling Service opened, offering Maui its first and only residential curbside collection service. They borrowed a truck for the first two months, then purchased their own Ford F250 at a Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar auction. By 1991, the County of Maui got into the act, hiring a recycling coordinator and implementing community drop boxes for recycling. Not long after Aloha Recycling opened for business and started taking glass and crushing it for use as “glasphalt”– a filler for asphalt. That’s about the time that Maui Recycling Service set up commercial services for

continued from page 11 several large hotels, and in 1997 they started offering food waste collections, though that portion of the business was sold a few years later. By 2001, MRS was running their trucks on 100 percent biodiesel, and in 2003 they opened the Bio-Beetle Eco Rental Car Company with a few diesel Volkswagens. Today they rent Beetles, Jettas, a Jeep Liberty, two Prius hybrids, and a plug-in Nissan Leaf, all while continuing to run Maui Recycling Service. It’s taken decades to get to this level, but I’m still surprised at how many people here don’t understand how the island’s distance from the Mainland factors into the cost of recycling. On the Mainland, a single stream recycling system is feasible because processing plants are within driving distance of each other. But here, Maui Recycling Service must ask customers to sepa-

rate their recyclables because the labor involved in preparing the items for the processor–in this case, Aloha Recycling–would be prohibitive. The differences among the glass, plastic, tin, steel, aluminum, electronics, various types of paper, (newspaper, junk mail and glossy), cardboard, batteries, phone books and cell phones make an enormous financial dent in any business when shipping them off-island so that they can be recycled and turned into similar products (like aluminum cans) or completely new products like plastics. With just seven employees at MRS (disclosure: I’m one of them), separating all the varieties of recyclables would not allow any time to drive around the island collecting them in the first place. The information provided by the county, individual companies and those in the recycling field should be a priority for anyone who thinks reusing our trash can help make a better community. ✿

your dilemma: there are only so many gilded frames and so much wall space. So what to do with old copies of MauiTime? We reinforce our office building’s waning structural integrity with thousands of back issues piled to the ceiling, creating great Doric order columns that inspire fear and awe in the hearts of fire inspectors. We also make newspaper hats. Why? Because the forgotten fourth band member in the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle ensemble is (drum roll, please) Repurpose! See, newsprint is like a cat–even the mangy ones have multiple lives. So this year, we’re showing you how–with a little ingenuity–you can eke extra oomph out of once-proud trees’ pulp remains. Because sure, we sort of owe it to the cosmos’ 15 billion-year tradition which evolved the plants and people that make paper products–but you also never know when you’ll need to whip-up a good papier-mâché doohickey. The latest research indicates that the number one reuse of MauiTime is for picking-up pet poop. But did you also know that MauiTime is great for lining the cages of small animals like birds, bunnies and lab rats? Yessir, our weekly’s reporting is so in-depth that it actually makes the paper itself more absorptive. Also, our African Grey readers say they can’t get enough of Coconut Wireless. There’s also nothing like coming home after a long day at work, chugging a cold brewski and turning the empty bottle into a Molotov cocktail. Setting stuff on fire (like parking tickets and effigies of your boss) really helps take the edge off bending over for The Man. It’s also an essential post-breakup practice. You may not be able to burn-off herpes like you can regular warts, but burning perfumed love letters adds a delightfully aromatic touch to any beach bonfire or voodoo curse. A good fire’s built on a foundation of good kindling–and MauiTime makes good kindling. Back in the day, folks twisted hay (see Laura Ingalls Wilder’s The Long Winter) to add density

to kindling so that it burned slower, giving logs enough time to light. The same can be done with newspaper. Of course, unless you’re an artistic genius, papier-mâché projects are incredibly time consuming and mostly useless. So if you like spending life’s precious moments making something you’ll eventually throw away, it’s the medium of choice (second only to macaroni). Though papier-mâché is a French term that literally means “chewed paper,” it’s important that you don’t masticate MauiTime. The ink will turn your gums blacker than even periodontal disease can and this is unattractive. All you really need for papier-mâché is white flour and water. You either can use the mix cold or first boil the solution so that the finish dries clear; but the trade-off is that the cooked version is not as sturdy. You should also think outside the balloon. Not just for makeshift condoms and sea creature-choking, balloons are handy forms (when inflated, of course) for papier-mâché crafting. The roundish shapes can be used as the foundations for full-face masks, or the bodies of piggy banks and pinatas that you can smash like your hopes and dreams. Now making paper bags is also a great craft project for people who suck at finishing things. All you have to do is pretend like you’re gift-wrapping a box, but crap-out halfway through. Then, simply slide the box out of the unfinished end and voila! You’ve got a paper bag! The same technique, when applied to a tin can–and using paper thickened by folding it at least three-ply–is great for making seedling pots that can be planted directly into the ground. Finally, if you’re a grown-up who doesn’t know how to make a newspaper hat, your childhood was even worse than you thought. Start with therapy, then fold a piece of newspaper in half (MauiTime comes conveniently pre-folded). Then fold the corners of the creased end inward to form a triangle. A long narrow strip will be left at the bottom, which should then be folded-up to create the hat’s brim. Wear and enjoy. ✿

HOW RECYCLING MAUI’S TEXTILES CAN HELP SAVE THE PLANET

You may

not think about it, but the manufacturing of fabrics is a top source of pollution on our planet, with cotton and polyester production using vast amounts of pesticides and chemicals. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that in 2010, an amazing 12.83 million tons of textiles found their way into our municipal solid waste (MSW) stream, with 1.97 million tons of that recovered through recycling. Textiles are recycled at a rate of about 15 percent (paper’s rate is 52.7 percent). The central Maui landfill is expected to reach capacity in 2026. One option is to acquire more land, but a better option is to increase our recycling efforts. “Our community is pretty good about getting stuff to second hand stores,” says Hana Steel, Maui County Recycling Coordinator. “Our 2011 figures show textiles are 2.7 percent of MSW for businesses and residents at the Central Maui Landfill, compared to Oahu at 3.3 percent and Kauai at 4 percent.” Bethany Gringrich takes this very seriously. In fact, in 2006 she decided to make a change in her life, resolving to go for one year without buying anything new. Her change proved so successful that in 2007 she and her partner Joseph Cicchino created the first Elise Clothing consignment store in Kahului. Today, the business has grown to three stores. “Recycling clothing is a huge benefit to the environment,” says Cicchino. “All of our clothing is sourced on Maui from local individuals, requiring no shipping. This saves fuel, packaging, and other waste that goes along with new retail. Nearly all of our retail fixtures were purchased on either Maui or Oahu from other retail businesses. We also provide our own reusable shopping bags with purchases. We estimate it to be over 30,000 pounds of textile that we actually accept and sell.” Elise buys clothing and accessory items outright when you bring them in. Other consignment shops like Rainbow Attic feature

household goods, furniture pieces, books and clothing and accessories. Bohemia on Market Street in Wailuku is a consignment store that specializes in designer items and some locally designed goods. Big Brother Big Sister of Maui, which provides Maui’s at-risk youth with support and oneto-one mentoring relationships, has a truck that picks up re-usable clothing and small household items that operates five to six days a week. “We offer free at-home / business pickup and then deliver the items directly to the Savers store, where the store pays us based upon the weight of the items,” says J.D. Wyatt, the organization’s director. “I believe the extra value we provide by picking items up at their homes is a win-win for everyone involved.” Another non-profit working in the clothing recycling business is Kidney Clothes, which operates on behalf of the National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii. They have two staffed donation pods, one near the Longs in Pukalani and the other near the Longs in Kihei, where you can donate your reusable clothing and shoes. “Kidney disease is on the rise and this is one way we offset the cost of providing our services,” says Colleen Welty, Maui Director, National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii. “We have a driver on the road about two days a week doing pick ups and Savers purchases the goods from us.” There is also something undeniably cool about wearing used clothing. Gingerich from Elise believes strongly in this. “There are so many ways to recycle wearables!” says Gingerich. “People get so excited when they find awesome treasures, so if you don’t love it, move it out of your closet and get it to someone who will adore it. It’s one of the simplest and most fun ways to be environmentally friendly and look super-cute!” ✿ editor@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1544L

FRIDAY, APRIL 20 MAUI SLAM – “Ah, poetry,” muse Maui Slam promoters. “It asks big questions and searches for big answers [in] love, life, cultural relativism, social justice, time travel, sex... and now it’s time to tackle climate change!” This month’s poetry slam is about all things Earth (it’s also the event’s six-year anniversary), and if you come prepared with a three-minute piece (costumes, props and group performances are encouraged; sign-ups are from 9-9:30pm), you can vie for the $100 cash prize. Augmenting this month’s show is an “upcycled” bikini fashion show by Indie Attire, showcasing couture pieces by designer Sara Plesset who reworks used swimsuits in unique ways. Plus, DJ Boomshot’s on turntables, Douglas Deboer’s doing visuals and comedian Chino LaForge presents a set titled “Dirty Earth.” $10 cover / $5 before 9:30pm. 9pm sign-ups / 9:30pm show. Casanova (1188 Makawao Ave.); 572-0220; mauislam.com

MAKAWAO THIRD FRIDAY GOES “BOUTIQUE CHIC” – This month’s Makawao Third Friday party’s got a Spring fashion theme, with a special runway show styled by Desiree Martinez of Pink by Nature, featuring clothing, shoes and accessories from many of Makawao’s boutiques and DJ sets by Sweet Beats and Cudra Clover. Plus, there will be a live performance by Kepa and slam poetry by Pat Masumoto and the Maui Slam Poets. See our Da Kine Calendar for more. Free admission. 6-9pm. Makawao Town. mauifridays.com

FRIDAY, APRIL 20 ANNUAL ART OF TRASH EXHIBIT AND FASHION SHOW, PRESENTED BY COMMUNITY WORK DAY PROGRAM AND SHARING ALOHA – The Art of Trash is a bad-ass event where Mauians can make the most of their creative minds by turning junk into jewels–eco-alchemy, if you will. “Maui’s Art of Trash has always had a playful energy and an underlying awareness of just how serious a matter reuse and recycling can be,” says Ira Ono, founder, juror and creator of the exhibit. This Friday, check out the exhibit’s trash fashion show (and opening night of the exhibit, on display through May 13), where the stunning ensembles are all made of repurposed rubbish. The night also features a performance by the band Junkyard and attendees are encouraged to dress in their trashiest best, too. Free admission. 6pm. Maui Mall (70 E. Kaahumanu Ave., Kahului); facebook. com/artoftrash

LUKAS NELSON & PROMISE OF THE REAL – (Fri & Sat, Apr. 20-21.) Aren’t we lucky? Maui’s a sort of home base for Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, who (when they’re not globe trotting) gig every so often at Papa Willie’s North Shore saloon, Charley’s. They’ve also been getting major air lately, with appearances on Letterman, Leno and Kimmel. Their latest album, Wasted, was just released on Apr. 3, and of its style, Nelson explains, “Neil Young suggested that we record the album live in the studio in analog, which is something we didn’t do on the last record... It really added a lot of magnetism, energy, and that live feel.” But the only way to really get “that live feel” is to go to a live show–and lucky us have two to choose from this 4/20 weekend. $22. 9:30pm both nights. Charley’s Restaurant & Saloon (142 Hana Hwy., Paia); 579-8085; charleysmaui.com

DIAMONDS’ 420 PARTY – Duuuude. It’s, like, totally gonna be goin’ down at Diamonds this 4/20. Green bottle Becks are just, like, three bucks–which is, like, whoa–and if you’ve got the munchies, the kitchen’s serving food ‘til midnight. Best of all, Gomega’s manning the stage and, um, hold on... [gurgle-gurgle, hold, exhale, cough] Um. Um. Ummm... I forgot what else. Whatever it is, I’m sure it’s, like, awesome. No cover. 10pm. Diamonds Ice Bar & Grill (1279 S. Kihei Rd.); 874-9299

SATURDAY, APRIL 21 20TH ANNUAL EAST MAUI TARO FESTIVAL – Taro’s been cultivated for thousands of years around the globe (even ancient Egyptians farmed taro with Nile waters), but nowhere on Earth was taro farming perfected like it was in old Hawaii. Wetland varieties are on average 30 percent more productive than dryland types, and production practices (i.e. lo’i) ingeniously allow water to recirculate back into to the river system and flow into the sea (the lack of which contributes to ocean acidification). Another cool thing about taro is that it’s a high-carbohydrate but low-glycemic food–making it an ideal staple crop that simply needs to be paired with a lean protein for perfect nutrition. There’s loads to learn about taro–both culturally and biologically–and the best place for that’s at the annual East Maui Taro Festival. See our Da Kine Calendar for more details. Free admission. 9am-5pm. Hana Ballpark (Hau’oli St. & Uakea Rd., Hana); 264-1553; tarofestival.org

REQUESTS AND KAOI RADIO GROUP PRESENT RECORD STORE DAY – Requests is Maui’s only record store–a musical shrine that’s stood the test time–that’s independent n’ authentic to boot. Celebrate this sensationally bizarre realm of beats and much more at Record Store Day with live performances by Owaila, LiA LiVE, DjBlast, Visibly Shaken, Helmet Conspiracy, DJ Trip, The Mary Jane Xperiment, Halemanu and Earth Bound Misfits. Plus, there’s loads of freebies from major and indie labels (mean kine stuff like logo bags, limited release vinyl, stickers, buttons and other gallimaufry goodness) and deep discounts store-wide. Free admission. 10am-6pm. Requests (10 N. Market St., Wailuku); 244-9315; requestshawaii.com / @requestshi on Twitter / hashtag #RSD2012

SUNDAY, APRIL 22 EARTH DAY FESTIVAL – Two entertainment stages boast performances by Maui Underground, Anthony Natividad, Dreaming Bear, The Freeradicals Projekt, The Troublemakers and more. Plus, explore environmental and social awareness booths, keiki activities, a farmers’ market, and discussions about alternative transportation, energy and agriculture. Sponsored by Haleakala Solar, Mandala Eco Homes and Lovevolution Foundation. (PS: Be green and bring your own reusable cups, plates and utensils!) $7 admission / free for keiki. Ke’opuolani Park Amphitheater (behind the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, across from the War Memorial Stadium on Kanaloa St., Kahului); 268-1211; mauiearthday.org

TUESDAY, APRIL 24 “STRESSED” IS “DESSERTS” SPELLED BACKWARDS – Dessert names exemplify the whole sum-of-its-parts thing. Words that sound good on their own suddenly sound leaps and bounds better when strung together. For example, dark chocolate almond butter cups; mint chocolate truffles; and vegan cherry cobbler. Mmm... Go the munchies? Us, too. Luckily for us, we can learn how to make those very recipes from Jessica Oshier, who instructs free vegetarian cooking classes each Tuesday at Down to Earth. Free. 5:30pm. Down to Earth (305 Dairy Rd., Kahului); 877-2661; facebook.com/downtoearthhi / @downtoearthfood on Twitter

FREE SCREENING: STARRY NIGHT CINEMA PRESENTS BEE MOVIE – Have you heard the buzz about the MACC’s monthly movie nights? They’re free, geared for families and full of fun. This month’s featured film, in honor of Earth Day, is the animated comedy Bee Movie (2007), starring the voices of Jerry Seinfeld and Renee Zellweger. Plus, local rockers SoundWave perform, and casual dining and drink specials are offered in the courtyard. Sponsored by County of Maui with support from Maui Film Festival and H. Hawaii Media radio. (PS: Remember to bring beach chair and/or blankets for outdoor seating!) Free. 5:30pm gates / 7pm show. A&B Amphitheater / Yokouchi Pavilion, MACC (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 242-SHOW (7469); mauiarts.org

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25 JACK JOHNSON ACOUSTIC TOUR WITH JOHN CRUZ AND PAULA FUGA – (Wed. & Thu., Apr. 25-26.) This is one of those big shows where everybody and your aunty’s neighbor’s coworker wants to be there. You should want to be there, too. So what can we tell you about the show that you don’t already know? Not much. But try this: Life’s full of social rules. Most are simple matters of decency. Don’t fart on an elevator. Cover your mouth when you cough. Pass the dutchie to the left. Meanwhile some social rules are designed to keep us from being creepers. Don’t stare into your dentist’s eyes while he’s working on your teeth. Hips should stay out of hugs unless you’re aiming to end up horizontal. But here’s one we hear the kiddies neglect nowadays: if you’re en route to–or, heaven forbid, in the parking lot of–a concert, don’t bump the music of the band you’re about to see! It’s just lame. If that rule rocked your world, sorry. We didn’t want to be the ones to have to break it to you, but you had to know. And aren’t you glad you now know better? We thought so. In fact, we’re so proud of how well you’re taking this, we want to help you out. Here’s a quick list of Jack Johnson-esque acts that will have you sounding like a smooth pro in the parking lot before the show: 1) M. WARD – Sounds like: if Jack Johnson had an older, heroin-addicted brother. Looks like him, too. Other projects: She & Him, a duo with Zooey Deschanel on ‘ukulele. Seriously. 2) ANIMAL LIBERATION ORCHESTRA – Sounds like: sweet and sour studio-fried Phish with a pinch of Blues Travelers’ saccharin side. Who Wants To See Chimps?

Disney Wins With Chimpanzee Chimpanzee ★★★★★

BY BARRY WURST II

Rated G

I

used to love the nature stories they’d show on The Wonderful World of Disney, where we’d follow the life of a bear cub or a lemur for an afternoon. They were always the same: very mild documentaries on wildlife, with amazing animal footage and folksy narration that sounded like this: “Ole Buck was a feisty critter, always getting into mischief... uh oh, here comes Jasper the Turtle! Will they get along today?” If Old Yeller is still the Citizen Kane of boy and his dog movies, then somewhere in the top ten should be Benji The Hunted, the Disney summer flick where Benji is lost in the woods, adopts a cluster of abandoned lion cubs and protects them from a hungry wolf. It’s not The Grey but I know I’ve seen that movie more than The Godfather and The Shawshank Redemption. When it comes to showing how cute and utterly fascinating animals are out in the wild,

Disney always had a golden touch. This tradition of quality extends to their Disney Nature films, out every year in time for Earth Day. I was spellbound by Earth and Oceans but this year’s film, Chimpanzee trumps them both. It follows the early life of a chimp named Oscar. Why is he named that? Beats me. The other chimpanzees in the story have equally cute names like Scar, Freddy and Rufus, presumably because Kong and Caesar would be too intimidating. Anyway, Oscar is enjoying his carefree life until a twist out of Bambi finds him stranded and desperately alone in the jungle. An unlikely and deeply moving friendship saves his life and gives him the parenting he badly lacks. Like the Disney Nature films that came before it, Chimpanzee is lovely and gorgeous to behold, a vision of the wild worth seeing on the biggest screen possible. The end credits show us how the filmmakers braved terrible weather and trying conditions to get so close and capture such amazing footage. Best of all, the filmmakers reveal that the stunning, animal kingdom friendship they filmed was as surprising for them to witness as it is for the audience.

The sole problem with the previous films is the same here: the narration. Tim Allen’s voice is in every scene and sometimes he helpfully explains the chimpanzee behavior and pushes the story forward. At other times, his cornball comments (“this is Freddy...he’s large and in charge!”) are eye rolling. He doesn’t stoop to inserting “To Infinity and Beyond” into his script but manages to interject his trademark Home Improvement catch phrase at a barely appropriate moment. Allen’s yammering over every beautiful scene is sometimes like Chevy Chase narrating a Terrence Malick film. Nevertheless, Allen’s feature length audition for The Santa Clause 4 doesn’t totally detract from the experience, especially when the imagery is this amazing. You’ll be surprised to learn what the chimpanzees eat for

meat and the footage of them on the hunt and at battle with warring chimps is jaw dropping. So is seeing the chimpanzees working with “tools” and learning to prepare their food. There are a few intense but bloodless moments that may trouble only the tiniest keiki. Kids around the third grade and up are the perfect audience for this G-rated delight. Lots of family movies work as time killers and distractions but this one will entertain and fill audiences of all ages with awe. This is the kind of movie that I would have loved seeing on a field trip, during a science class, or after my weekly screening of Benji the Hunted. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1544f

KULA KID

The Goodness of Green BY ANU YAGI

Terry and I worship an unconventional deity. The power of another dimension. Now you are not going to read about this dimension in a book or in a magazine or in a newspaper because it doesn’t exist anywhere except in my own mind. Through our ceremonies and our rituals we have witnessed, firsthand, the awesome and vibratory power of color. We experience it as alive and constantly shaping our experience. And we believe that this saturated energy is the basis of all creation. – Jane Lynch as Laurie Bohner in A Mighty Wind (2003) very spot on the visible spectrum has its stigma, but it’s really not easy being Green. Not ever and especially not now. What other color (race stuff aside), is on the tip of everyone’s tongue more than Green? Poor Green’s got the weight of the warming world on its

E

shoulders! Never mind that Green’s the color code word of choice for 420 friendly folks (for obvious reasons). After all, that’s what makes the end of April so much fun. (If you’re confused, here’s the CliffsNotes-of-sorts: April 20 is kind of, like, Potheads’ most sacred international holiday. It’s bigger than Bob Marley’s birthday. Chronic Christmas, if you will. And paired with Earth Day on April 22, it’s the impetus of our annual Green Issue. The fact that it happens to fall on Adolf Hitler’s birthday is, I believe, coincidental.) Look, I love irie, rah-rah save the world shit as much as you do. And I think Green’s doing a great job of representin’ all that. But even with its springtime spotlight, I don’t think this color’s getting enough respect. Green’s gallimaufry goodness goes further than even justice for the emerald Earth and hope of legalizing ganja. Green means go, greed, evil and envy. Optically, it’s at the center of the visible spectrum and opposite magenta on the color wheel. Spiritually, it’s a symbol of Islam and the 12-petaled hexagram of Hinduism’s heart chakra. From camo to

olive branches, Green means war and peace. It is copper crust and medieval lust; shamrocks and snakes; growth and decay... So this weekend, I’ve decided–after toking and taking my bottles n’ cans to the big, green recycling bins–I wanna celebrate Green in extra ways. Obscurely (as is my forte), if possible. I’ve listed a few of my favorite (sort of) green things–you know, just in case you want to play-along, too: 1. [CULT CLASSIC] Clue (1985; Paramount). Starring Eileen Brennan, Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull and Lesley Ann Warren. Written by Jonathan Lynn and John Landis. Spoiler Alert: This masterful flick’s at the top of my list because Mr. Green’s the mischievous hero. 2. [GOLD ALBUM] Al Green Explores Your Mind (1974; Hi Records). Al Green’s eighth album. Contained the original version of “Take Me to the River” (famously covered by Talking Heads in 1978), one of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. 3. [FANTASY NOVEL] Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury (1957). In the strange, sweet summer of 1928, a 12-year-old boy growing up in pastoral (albeit fictional) Green Town, Illinois, confronts life’s seasons, magic and mortality. ■ To share or save: mt.hy.pr/1544k anu@mauitime.com

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)

Some of your past failed relationships didn’t work out because you ignored glaring red flags, or simply single-mindedly kept your eye on “the prize” (i.e. the relationship you wanted), instead of observing and working with what was actually there. The ends do not justify the means here any more than they do elsewhere. Your desire to have the relationships you imagine is understandable, but allowing that desire to eclipse the relationships you actually have is a mistake. This week, refocus on the how great those connections are instead of on all the ways they’re supposedly lacking. You’re luckier than you think.

When the close-mindedness of others becomes obvious and outspoken, speaking up is generally an admirable thing to do. It’s not always prudent or wise, however. Sometimes tact provides a better outcome than righteous valor. While defending others from intolerance and bigotry should be a no-brainer, simply correcting people’s narrow-minded opinions about this issue or that trend is more of a pick-your-battles type thing. Often, it’s worth your while to speak up and present a more worldly viewpoint; occasionally, like this week, the smartest and most productive thing to do is just keep your mouth shut.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

You can’t protect other people from their own choices, especially when it comes to relationships. Just look at the futile, counterproductive efforts parents make when their teenage children select unsuitable partners. Their best intentions usually blow up in their faces; so, unfortunately, will yours. This is one of those times where you kind of have to be supportive, regardless of how you actually feel. Hopefully, they’ll figure out what you know, all on their own. In the meantime, maybe you’ll discover a thing or two, too—like maybe their choices aren’t as bad as you initially thought.

Your love of freedom, like so many things, is both strength and weakness. Occasionally, it’s made you prone to misinterpreting circumstances in such a way that it seems like it’s “time to move on” long before it actually is. What if that omen wasn’t an omen, and causes you to exit a situation that might have been perfect for the long-term, if you weren’t so trigger-happy and ready to split at the first hint of trouble? Stop shooting yourself in the foot with your overzealous flight instinct, or you’ll never be sure when it’s actually time to stop running on to the next thing and just stick around to see what happens, instead. It might be pretty cool.

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

I’ve never met anyone who can make such a big deal out of turning down a wedding invitation (or the like) as a Cancer can. Forgoing events you’d rather not participate in—office lunches, parties, etc.—isn’t the complicated and dramatic affair you sometimes make it out to be. Even if the reasons you don’t want to attend are huge and emotional, inside your head, they don’t need to be part of your explanation. Cite a busy work schedule or previous obligation and leave it at that. Of course, if you’re just bored and want the drama, go ahead and hint at other reasons until it all comes out in the open—but that’s on you.

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

Butt out and let people make their stupid mistakes. You ought to know by now that offering unsolicited advice to certain people in your life is rarely received well, even though it’d spare the recipients so much suffering and embarrassment if they’d just listen to you. It’s probably going to be very hard for you to resist trying, anyway, this week, because of how boneheaded and shortsighted people can sometimes be. However, since speaking up is just going to get you snapped at and cause conflict, biting your tongue and allowing people to fall flat on their faces is, sadly, the only real way to go.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

Bullies take many forms; in childhood, they’re often quite visible and obvious. Adults, however, are more subtle. Leos can be bullies, too, but generally you only throw your weight around for others’ benefit (as you perceive it, anyway), so it’s not as awful as those who sadistically take pleasure in others’ pain or discomfort. Of course, your ability to get your way can come in handy when it comes to taking down more malevolent bullies—this week, knock them down a peg or two. And make sure you always use your powers for good, not evil!

When people are deeply angry, they sometimes irrationally lash out at whoever’s nearby—which is almost never the “deserving” party. While these poor recipients (often messengers bearing bad news) almost always get an apology, after the fact, that doesn’t erase the sting of suffering in the first place. Because of who you are and how you deal with stuff, it was probably relatively easy for you to forgive and forget when this kind of thing happened to you. Other people, though, are less emotionally resilient—this week, though, you may be able to help them along a little. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

Virgos are in most cases lovely, laid back individuals. But every one of you has a hot button topic or two that can transform you from a chill companion to an irate, snarling bulldog who will not let an issue go once you’ve clenched it in your jaws. Learning to recognize when to simply and gracefully drop the subject is a skill you should acquire, quickly, lest your tenacity get you into all kinds of trouble. Your determination is a good thing; when it crosses over into intractable stubbornness, however, you’re ultimately mostly just biting yourself in the ass.

There are always shit-stirrers—people who, for whatever reason(s), enjoy getting others riled up, anyway they can (on online forums they’re called “trolls”). The problem is, they are generally very good at what they do, and it’s extremely hard for the average person to resist rising to the bait they set. That, naturally, is your task this week. It may require the patience of a saint and the restraint of a brain surgeon, but do whatever you can to avoid engaging with the trolls in your life; even though it’ll suck in the moment, overall you’ll be much happier for it.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

When we act out of fear, we often do precisely the things most likely to cause our fears and anxieties to become manifest. Partners worried about their lovers cheating can grow so jealous, suspicious, nosy, and unpleasant to be around that the prospect of an affair becomes increasingly tantalizing. Acting out of your most worried impulses will only make them much more likely to come true, so try to resist it. That’s not to say you should blind yourself to real, obvious evidence that things are not cool—but in the absence of such, assuming that everything’s more or less okay is probably the best way to go.

QUIZunderstood ANSWERS

People make mistakes. While the rational part of you can of course understand and want to forgive and forget those errors, your emotional side may have more trouble. When their screw-ups cause you pain, embarrassment, or suffering, you may be filled with rage or sadness or vindictiveness towards them. Acting on those understandable feelings, however, would be something you’d regret later. This is when you pull out one of those clichés, like, “What would Jesus/Buddha/Big Bird Do?” and behave accordingly, even if you don’t feel it. Years from now, when the sting of your feelings has faded, you’ll be so glad you managed to behave like a saint.
