Talk of the Island

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO

Saved!

FREIGHT TRAINS SAVED!

Twenty-three years is a long time to fight for a surf spot, but that’s exactly what surfers from Maui and around the world have done in Ma‘alaea. For decades the US Army Corps of Engineers and the state Department of Land and Natural Resources have been putting forth plans to expand Ma‘alaea Harbor. Their reasoning was to allow for harbor expansion, but doing so would also damage huge sections of reef and destroy Freight Trains, literally one of the top surf breaks on the planet. It doesn’t go off many days out of the year, but when it does, look out. Massive storms that occur from April to September off the eastern coast of New Zealand generate giant waves, which travel 4,000 miles north towards Hawaii. It’s a rare day when all that energy manages to shoot the tiny eight-mile gap between Kahoolawe and Maui’s southern tip, but when it does, you get a gorgeous, extremely fast wave barrelling right into Ma‘alaea Harbor, much like its namesake. Indeed, it’s considered the fastest rideable wave on Earth. Since 1990, the Surfrider Foundation has been trying to get the fed and the state of Hawaii to abandon its Ma‘alaea Harbor expansion plans and preserve both the reef and the surf break. That finally happened on Friday, May 4, when officials terminated the project, saying that the “high cost” and considerable (and ever-growing) “community concerns” that they were facing became too much to overcome. Needless to say, Surfrider officials from Hawaii and the Mainland were celebrating. “Even before there was a Maui Chapter, Surfrider Foundation campaigned to save the world-class wave at Ma‘alaea,” Stuart Coleman, Surfrider’s Hawaii Coordinator,

said in a May 7 email. According to the email, Surfrider has “logged countless hours of community outreach, attended hearings, legal filings and even commissioned an independent review of the Army Corps of Engineers plans for the project.” Normally, this space is reserved for bad news: public officials behaving badly, land development projects gone wrong. The victory by Surfrider–and the rest of myriad groups and individuals who spent so many years battling the harbor expansion plans– is very welcome good news.

MAUI ERODING AWAY!

Okay, time for bad news: nearly three quarters of all the beaches on Maui, Kauai and Oahu are eroding away, according to a new study by the US Geological Survey (USGS) and the University of Hawaii’s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST). “Of the three islands, Maui beaches experienced the highest rates and greatest extent of beach erosion with 85% of beaches eroding,” says a May 7 email from UH spokeswoman Marcie Grabowski. “Erosion is the dominant trend of coastal change on all three islands with 71% of beaches eroding on Kaua'i and 60% of beaches eroding on O'ahu.” Eighty-five percent on Maui?! It’s a wonder we can still find space to soak up any

UV rays. Granted, erosion on volcanic island chains like Hawaii is not surprising. “The inevitable fate of the Hawaiian Islands millions of years into the future is seen to the northwest in the spires of French Frigate Shoals and the remnants of other once mighty islands, ancestors of today’s Hawaii, but now sunken beneath the sea through the forces of waves, rivers, and the slow subsidence of the seafloor,” said USGS Director Marcia McNutt in the email. But unlike past islands that have eroded away, Hawaii today has considerable human development right up to the shoreline– roads and buildings that even today are crumbling away. In fact, you can see this vividly just north of the Pali. It’s a fact that the study’s researchers know only too well. “Over a century of building along the Hawaiian shoreline, without this sort of detailed knowledge about shoreline change, has led to some development that is located too close to the ocean,” said Dr. Charles Fletcher, UH Geology and Geophysics Professor and lead study author in the email. “A better understanding of historical shoreline change and human responses to erosion may improve our ability to avoid hazards in the future.”

MECO TO HIKE RATES AGAIN!

Oh, and by the way: the state Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has finally ruled that the

Overheard “That’s the new style–it’s like half up your butt. You see it on the beach all the time.” -Woman at Whaler’s Village in Kaanapali, May 5

Maui Electric Co. (MECO) rate hike instituted back in the summer of 2010, is okay by them. “The PUC finalized a 1.5% increase, or $4.7 million in annual revenues, effective May 4, 2012,” said Kau‘i Awai-Dickson, MECO spokesperson, in a May 4 email. “This amount has already been reflected in electric bills since August 2010, when the PUC approved an interim increase.” You get all that? According to AwaiDickson, the rate hike was “requested to help pay for more than $122 million in capital improvements such as replacement and upgrade of power plant control systems at the Maalaea Generating Station, new or expanded substations to support past and future growth and improve service, as well as increasing operations and maintenance costs for the utility’s electric system.” Sounds reasonable, right? How about this little sentence, which also appeared in her May 4 email: “The PUC is still reviewing MECO’s pending 2012 rate request, and an interim decision in that case may be issued later this month.” Woohoo! Rate hikes for everyone! Hey, this is what happens when we have a monopoly (that would be MECO) controlling the generation and transmission of electric power on Maui. They ask the PUC, which is hardly what anyone would consider to be a radical entity, for rate hikes, and the PUC holds hearings, and then more than likely grants the rate hike. Attaching solar panels to home rooftops is expensive, but I can see the attraction in escaping from MECO’s control (as well as reducing dependence on dirty fuels like oil). Of course, there are new windmills going up right this second in Maalaea–the generators themselves cost money, as does the labor needed to run them, but their fuel costs are zero. Wind is free! And yet our electric bills are still going up and will continue to do so. All that talk about the U.S. being a free market capitalist state? Apparently not where electric power on Maui is concerned. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1547n1

NEWS OF THE WEIRD BY CHUCK SHEPARD

ULTIMATE GATED COMMUNITY

Condo developer Larry Hall is already one-quarter sold out of the upscale doomsday units he is building in an abandoned underground Cold War-era Atlas-F missile silo near Salina, Kan. He told an Agence France-Presse reporter in April that his 14-story structure would house seven floors of apartments ($1 million to $2 million each, cash up front), with the rest devoted to dry food storage, filtered-water tanks and an indoor farm, which would raise fish and vegetables to sustain residents for five years. The nine-foot-thick concrete walls (built to protect rockets from a Soviet nuclear attack) would be buttressed by entrance security to ward off the savages who were not wise enough to prepare against famine, meteors, nuclear war and the like. Hall said he expects to be sold out this year and begin work on another of the three silos he has options to buy.

PEOPLE WITH ISSUES

In March, West Des Moines, Iowa, police opened an investigation, with video surveillance, of a 59-year-old employee of the state’s Farm Bureau on suspicion of criminal mischief. According to police documents cited by the Des Moines Register, the man would look through the employee database for photos of attractive female colleagues and then visit their work space after hours and urinate on their

chairs. Not only does the man allegedly have a problem, but the Farm Bureau figured it is out $4,500 in damaged chairs.

PERILS OF MYSTERY MEAT

Finally, a nationally prominent judge has taken on prison “nutriloaf” as a constitutional issue. In March, U.S. Appeals Court Judge Richard Posner reinstated a dismissed lawsuit by a Milwaukee County Jail inmate who claimed that the mystery meat gave him an “anal fissure.” Posner wrote that the lower courts needed to rule on whether the food of indeterminate content is “cruel and unusual punishment,” since (citing a Wikipedia entry) an anal fissure seems “no fun at all.”

I

bitch about TSA every time, but I gotta thank you, the Maui Airport s e c u r i t y guy who recently had the “pleasure” of X-raying my man purse. As I was clearing the security checkpoint with my five-month old daughter strapped to my chest and my fiance waiting for me ahead, I noticed you laugh at the screen, re-xray my bag, then summon three other co-workers. You all laughed and pointed. Then you brought me my bag, laughed, slapped it and said, “Here’s your bag, it’s vibrating.” I was in a post-flight stupor and thought nothing of it. But the next day as I was unpacking, I opened the bag and saw a nine-inch blue vibrating dildo peering out at me, draining the last of the battery after buzzing all night. I only know one pervert who’s sick enough to do this to a person, but I seriously need to thank the TSA guy for being discrete, for not yelling “BAG CHECK” and then holding a public showing of the, um, item in question. You did me a favor, friend, and I thank you. ■

In January, Ms. Navey Skinner, 34, was charged with robbing the Chase Bank in Arlington, Wash., after passing a teller a note that read, “Put the money in the bag now or [d]ie.” According to investigators, Skinner subsequently told them she had been thinking about robbing a bank and then, while inside the Chase Bank, “accidentally robbed” it. ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1547n2

Lapulapu Products. They’re produced by renowned Hawaiian healer Darrel Lapulapu. Darrell is extremely dedicated to and knowledgeable of the natural healing properties of plants and flowers that are indigenous to Hawaii. We’re thrilled to uphold and carry on the integrity and rituals associated with his products. He personally created the ‘awa cacao Lomi cocoon treatment for Kapalua Spa. We use Lomi Lomi techniques to apply a blend of Hawaiian ‘awa, cacao, natural herbs and oils onto the body. While you’re in the warm body wrap, you receive a head, neck and foot massage. Pikake spritz/ lotion application follows the wrap, moisturizing the skin and leaving a delightful scent. 80 minutes: $245.

During the times that you feel that you need to take refuge from the demands of every day life, my advice is to plan to retreat from the world for a few precious hours and create your own me time. Taking a long bath is a great way to relax! Add aromatherapy oils and sea salt to enhance benefits and mood. Your skin is able to release impurities and absorb the healing properties of any herbs and minerals that are added in the bathwater. Give your mind a chance to switch off and unwind. The body butter is incredibly rich, with a mix of tropical butters that include: mango, macadamia, avocado, aloe

vera and coconut. Use it weekly after bathing when you have time to relax and let the product get completely absorbed.

Our Cell Renewal Systems Multi-Peptide Serum ($50) This works in three ways as it increases the presence of cells (proliferation): it increases the activities of the cells in producing collagen and other components of the “extracellular matrix,” it relaxes and reduces the degree of existing wrinkles and it restores elasticity while firming, hydrating and moisturizing the skin. It visually reduces signs of aging. Multi-Peptide Serum is the glue that holds it all together–seriously! The extracellular matrix is made of elastin fiber, which is what holds the collagan in place. Loosen the elastin and your collagan goes with it. But Multi-Peptide Serum

strengthens those elastin fibers. We recommend our clients use Multi-Peptide and Retinol Serum together for the ultimate in anti-aging.

BEAUTY ADVICE Wear sunblock everyday, no matter what the weather is like! The sun’s rays can age us quicker than age itself and Maui sun is quite strong even on a cloudy day. Remember it’s much easier to prevent skin damage and aging than it is to reverse it. Paragon Salon, 1160 Makawao Ave. 808-573-1300, paragonsalonmaui.com

Ola Hawaii Pure Shampoo ($18 for eight ounces). Its awapuhi, hibiscus, and bamboo condition and stimulate hair follicle growth. The organic honey cleanses, conditions and softens. The coconut vinegar removes residue and enhances hair color. The Vitamin B conditions and thickens. The coconut water nourishes and enhances growth. And the kukui and macadamia nut oils deeply hydrate the scalp, add luster and protect the hair.

BEAUTY ADVICE Don’t fight with your hair–you will lose! Find the traits about your hair that you love and then accentuate them. Don’t try to change what you don’t like, unless it’s your hair color. Solar Oil is not just for nails but also your cuticles. It comes the closest to natural oils in your body and has vitamins and sunflower oil. It’s important to condition the nail bed if you put product like nail polish on your nails. Our Healthy Hoof cream is ultra hydrating for any dry skin. Most people focus on exfoliation for rough spots on the skin, but really you should be moisturizing. It keeps your feet hydrated and then they won’t chafe and crack. Healthy Hoof has lavender, eucalyptus, Vitamin E and shea butter.

Keep your beauty regimen for hands and feet easy! Everyone has 10 seconds to give to these parts of our body that work so hard for us. Make it work in your schedule. If you work at a desk keep your product on hand to moisturize. If you are a reader at home, keep it near where you sit and read. The key thing is to make it work. Even applying intermittently is better than doing nothing at all. Paragon Salon, 1160 Makawao Ave. 808-573-1300, paragonsalonmaui.com

BEAUTY ADVICE Making sure your body is hydrated, eating right and getting at least eight hours of sleep a night. It’s important to help your body be at its best. Because of the wear-and-tear our bodies go through on a daily basis, it’s also very important to incorporate massages and facials as part of an overall health and wellness program for your body. Don’t be afraid to try the boys’ toys. Jack Black – Face Buff – While this line is geared towards men, I love the menthol and Vitamin C wakeup it gives my face in the morning ($22). Then there’s Maui Lavender’s Sugar Scrub, Body Butter and Essential Oils: all products are made with lavender that is grown here on the island. The decadent Heavenly Body treatment offered at the full-service spa uses the sugar scrub to exfoliate the skin, followed by a refreshing shower. You are then wrapped in a warm cocoa butter blend while you enjoy a soothing scalp massage.

Take time for yourself. If you allocate an hour a day for you to do something that you enjoy, you’ll notice a difference in your energy, demeanor and overall health. The activities could range from swimming to reading, meditation or anything that you are passionate about. Spend time on yourself as you are worth it!

Senior esthetician, 18 years experience BEAUTY MUST-HAVE The GM Collin “Lipiad Advanced Complex” is a beautiful rejuvenating and repairing facial elixir that’s rich in Moroccan oil, macadamia nut oil and Omega 3,6 and 9. This is an amazing treat for your skin. Use it overnight for a nourishing hydrating treatment or under moisturizer for thirsty skin. It also makes a great eye makeup remover while conditioning and strengthening the lashes. I LOVE this product!

BEAUTY ADVICE Take care of your body and skin, inside and out. Our skin reflects our inner health. It’s important to eat well and be healthy so our skin is happy. Having a consistent home care routine, as well as receiving regular facials makes a huge difference. Living on Maui, we have

to be extremely careful about our potent sun. Sun ages our skin so quickly, be sure to use good sunscreen to protect your precious face. Also, having a diet rich in healthy fats, coconut oil, avocados, salmon, flax and seeds is extremely helpful for hydration internally. Foods high in antioxidants help protect skin internally from further environmental exposure. Acai, raw cocoa and pomegranate have internal sunscreen properties. Best Of Maui Awards Ballot It’s that time again Time to cast your votes for our annual BEST OF MAUI. Usually, this ballot is decked out with whatever theme we’ve chosen. But this year, we’ve come up with another theme so cool, we want to keep it under wraps. Seriously, you’re gonna really dig it.

A FEW NOTES ABOUT BALLOT STUFFING:

While most people play it straight, every year a few nefarious folks attempt to stuff the ballot box. To cut down on this, and to ensure the results are fair and accurate, here are a few rules:

As usual, categories are organized into five sections: arts & entertainment; food & drink; goods & services; politics & environment; and sports & leisure. We’ve added some new categories this year to spice things up, but you’ll still find all the old standbys. Please VOTE IN AT LEAST 40 CATEGORIES if you want your ballot to be counted. Voting ends May 31.

BE ACCEPTED

★ M ULTIPLE BALLOTS IN THE SAME

HANDWRITING WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

★ B ALLOTS MUST BE MAILED IN; NO MORE THAN THREE (3) BALLOTS PER

You may also notice these convenient little QR codes throughout the ballot that you can scan with your smart phone at any time to take you to our online ballot.

★ O NLY ONE (1) BALLOT PER PERSON ★ A LL BALLOTS MUST BE SIGNED ★ N O PHOTOCOPIED BALLOTS WILL

ENVELOPE. ENVELOPES MUST HAVE A RETURN ADDRESS

★ EACH ONLINE BALLOT MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A VALID E-MAIL ADDRESS

Any ballots that violate these rules—or that sufficiently rouse our suspicion— will not be tallied. We hope it isn’t necessary, but if anyone does attempt to unfairly sway the outcome, we reserve the right to create a Best Ballot Stuffer category. This is not something you want to win—trust us.

YOU MUST FILL OUT 40 CATEGORIES FOR YOUR VOTE TO COUNT! NOTE: In categories with the LOCAL stamp, only votes for locally owned businesses will be counted; no corporate chains. VOTE ONLINE AT MAUITIME.COM OR YOU MAY MAIL YOUR BALLOT TO: 33 N. Market St., Suite 201, Wailuku, HI 96793

He’s a Grammy-winning musician who makes beautiful music, puts on a hell of a show at the MACC and the Napili Kai and spins records on IslandFM (107.5 FM). FRIDAY, MAY 11 HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS – As part of their 2012 Championship Tour, the now 86-year-old Globetrotters are bringing their comical basketball wizardry to Maui. There’s the leader, Big Easy Lofton; dribbling sensations Handles Franklin and Scooter Christensen; sharp shooter Buckets Blake; dunkers Bones Millien, Bull Bullard and Hops Tucker; the rookie Stretch Middleton and TNT Maddox, the first female Globetrotter since 1993. $22/general admission ($27/day of event), $55/VIP for center court seats. 7pm. War Memorial Gym (700 Halia Nakoa St., Wailuku); 808-242-SHOW (7469); mauiarts.org

MAUI MATSURI – This two-day Japanese cultural affair kicks off with Japanese Family Movie Night. Then you should get a good night’s sleep because Kikaida and friends, cosplay, crafts and Japanese dancing are all going down on Saturday. The Matsuri Taiko drummers, martial arts demos and great Japanese foods are also highlights, but don’t miss the Manga and traditional Japanese art contest, either. “The goal is to produce a Festival that grows more spectacular annually and expose[s] the mainstream population to the diverse Japanese cultural arts and traditions,” say organizers. Sounds great to us. Free. 6:30pm. Pilina Building, UH Maui College (310 W. Kaahumanu Ave., Kahului); 808-283-9999; mauimatsuri.com

SATURDAY, MAY 12 SEABURY HALL CRAFT FAIR – Known on Maui for offering the longest and funnest waterside, but coveted for their beautiful artisan created crafts and gifts by moms, Seabury Hall’s craft fair is an Upcountry institution. Pony rides, face painting and a petting zoo also entertain the younger set. There are food booths by local restaurants and entertainment by the Haiku Hillbillies, Dr. Nat & Rio Ritmo, The Free Radicals Projekt, Wave Train, Visibly Shaken, The Kryptones, Feat, Dani Girl, Deep Cover and the Seabury Hall school band. Proceeds go to financial aid for Seabury Students. Don’t forget your swimsuits! Free. 9am - 5pm. Seabury Hall (480 Olinda Rd., Makawao); 808-573-0068 or 808-572-7235; seaburyhall.org

OHANA FUN PADDLE – Ocean enthusiasts can get wet this weekend at the Olukai Hoolaulea. The ohana fun paddle starts at the Paia Youth Center and runs downwind to Kanaha Beach Park. Any human-powered craft is welcome at this non-timed race. Want more of a challenge? They have a SUP and OC1 race and a $15,000 purse! All that plus a luau, hula, sailing canoe rides, ancient Hawaiian games and Ekolu Kalama. Free. 9am. Paia Youth Center (28 Hana Hwy, Paia); olukai.com

SUNDAY, MAY 13 MOTHER’S DAY CONCERT – If mom isn’t that into brunch, then you’re in luck. Here’s a chance to spend an excellent evening with mom at the intimate Supper Club Concert (which will benefit the non-profit organization Women Helping Women) at Stella Blues in Kihei. Joy Fields will host and you can rock out with some of Maui’s amazing talent: Sebrina Barron, Lily Meola, Danielle Delaunay, Nara Boone and Martie Heart. $30, show only; $60, four-course meal and show. 6:30pm. Stella Blues Cafe (1279 S. Kihei Rd.); 808-874-3779

HIGH TEA – It’s all about the most important woman in our lives. You know–the one who carried you in her womb for nine months and then gave birth to you. Celebrate mom with High Tea and the local stage production of My Mama Monologues on Sunday (the show also runs on Saturday). It features (what else?) heartfelt stories about mom, and was organized by Pat Masumoto, who drew inspiration from her own mother. Oh, and moms over 80 get in free with family. High Tea includes catering from Soup to Nuts. $50. 2pm show, 4pm tea. Iao Theater (68 N. Market St., Wailuku); 808-214-3320; mymamamonologues.com

MONDAY, MAY 14 KAMA‘AINA AT CAPISCHE – Capische’s accolades include being listed as one of the top 50 most romantic restaurants in the country by Open Table. Their amazing wine list and great cocktails are all part of the experience. The modern Italian menu is always as mind-blowing as the view, which is tremendous no matter where you’re seated in this intimate setting. Their kama‘aina deal rocks: buy one entree and get one half off (though not on holidays). It’s a great way to try those dishes you always wanted to try. Reservations recommended. 6pm. Hotel Wailea (555 Kuakahi Rd., Wailea); 808-879-2224; capische.com

MAUI’S FALLEN HEROS – Forty two of the 58,195 names on the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C. came from Maui. Once intensely controversial, the memorial–which is constructed as a black slab shaped like a soldier’s insignia chevron and sunk into the earth, then printed with the names of all the American soldiers killed in the war–has become far more accepted, given the passage of time since its 1984 opening. Thanks to Maui resident Janna Hoehn, who volunteers at the memorial, a new display at the Makawao Public Library will show the faces of all 42 Maui soldiers who died in that bloody, now largely forgotten war. TUESDAY, MAY 15 WE CALL DEM SLIPPAHS – In celebration of National Library Week, the Maui Academy of Performing Arts is presenting the world premiere of this musical, written by Maui playwright Derek Nakagawa and directed by Francis Tau‘a. It’s an upbeat musical about embracing differences and overcoming cultural prejudices. The Maui Friends of the Library is sponsoring the program, which is suitable for ages five and up. Free. 2:30pm. Makawao Public Library (1159 Makawao Ave.); 808-573-8785.

RIGHTS OF NATURE – There’s a school of thought (one not particularly popular in mainstream America) that says the private property rights that take such precedence in Western capitalist market-oriented democracies are detrimental to our world’s environmental health and are, in fact, in direct opposition to how our society should interact with nature. As the first event in a four-part series called “Man/Woman and Nature: Restoring the Balance,” Thomas Linzey of the non-profit Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund and Kapua Sproat of EarthJustice will speak about how we can help restore a more beneficial relationship between humanity and the planet. $10. 7pm. McCoy Studio Theater, MACC (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 808-242-SHOW (7469); mauiarts.org; alakukui.org

WEDNESDAY, MAY 16 POST-SUNSET PAU HANA – Musician Sebrina Barron brightens up the balcony at Lu Lu’s after the sunset. The open air balcony is the perfect place to watch the sky go dark and nosh a little dinner while catching one of Maui’s up and coming singers and guitarists over a cocktail. 7-9pm. Lulu’s Kihei (1945 S. Kihei Rd.); 8799944; lulusmaui.com

WINE WEDNESDAYS – Wine Wednesdays have become a Twitter phenomenon and Four Seasons Maui is jumping on board. You can catch their version of Wine Wednesday at all the bars and restaurants on the property. There you can tweet to your heart’s content with their hashtag #FSWW while swilling sample pours of their fabulous and unique featured wines for around $9. If you stay after 8pm, the bottles go half-price. $9. Four Seasons Maui (3900 Wailea Alanui Dr.)

The Horror! The Horror! Dark Shadows should have stayed in the shadows BY BARRY WURST II

Dark Shadows

★★★★★

Rated PG 13/113 Min.

D

ark Shadows was the most addictive daytime drama of its time. The reason why audiences couldn’t get enough of the show was simple– unlike every other soap opera, with subplots involving infidelity, amnesia, abduction, and betrayal, Dark Shadows was about an elegant vampire named Barnabas Collins (embodied by the late, great Jonathan Frid) who stalked around his mansion in Collinswood. Subplots involved time travel, monsters, spells and reincarnation, and that was just one season. I was a fan of the show, though I really loved the 1991 revival, starring Ben Cross and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, which was scarier and even weirder. On TV, it was campy, mesmerizing and spooky. On film, Dark Shadows tries to be a fish out of water comedy, a loving ode to the series, an f/x-driven horror movie, a social

commentary on the 1970’s and a gothic, romantic, soap opera spoof that fails at every turn. This is the first big turkey of the summer movie season and it’s overdone in every way but also strangely dull. Johnny Depp stars as Barnabas, an 18th century vampire suddenly brought back to life in the 1970’s. He attempts to adjust to domestic life in his sprawling Maine mansion, turning to his closest relative (Michelle Pfeiffer) and her kids for family bonding. Yet the witch (Eva Green) who imprisoned him in a coffin is still on the scene and wants to destroy him once and for all. It adapts a droll sense of humor from the start, with everyone giving a deadpan performance, but the jokes are lame, like Barnabas being perplexed at discovering a road for the first time. Yes, a joke about pavement. The screenplay tries to fuse seasons of subplots into a two hour film and, by making the story so busy, nothing comes together or lingers in the mind for very long. The brisk structure gives us quick, unconnected scenes, interrupted by shots of crashing waves, apparently to simulate where the commercial breaks would be.

Overdone In Every Way

The attractive cast is wasted, with Depp performing like he’s in the most expensive SNL skit ever produced. Despite having underdeveloped roles and not enough screen time, Pfeiffer and Jackie Earl Haley are great. On the other hand, Helena Bonham Carter looks like she’s still playing the Queen of Hearts. Love interest Bella Heathcote is a striking actress the film forgets it has, and Jonny Lee Miller, Chloe Grace Moretz and Green are terrible. The bigger shame is that director Tim Burton included Frid (in a blink and you’ll miss it cameo), Christopher Lee and Alice Cooper and doesn’t know what to do with them. The cinematography and sets are handsome, with

every scene carefully framed to emphasize the actors posing on immaculately decorated sound stages. It has affection for the decade the story is set in but no feel for what the period was like, beyond the hairstyles. My favorite thing about the movie was hearing great tunes by the Moody Blues, Donovan, Curtis Mayfield and Cooper on the soundtrack. Otherwise, how could the director of Beetlejuice botch this? The Haunted House ride at Disneyland is scarier and a lot more fun. Depp and Burton made the brilliant Ed Wood in 1994. They should have quit while they were ahead. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1547f

AUDIENCES WORLDWIDE ALL SAY THE SAME THING:

“THIS IS THE BEST SHOW I HAVE EVER SEEN!”

Popa is the forefront of modern blues-rock, he’s an imposing figure at that, weighing more than 300 pounds with a shaven head, tattooed arms, a goatee and a performing style he describes as the Stooges meets Buddy Guy, Motörhead meets Muddy Waters, Jimi Hendrix meets Robert Johnson.

HOROSCOPE

Sign Language BY CAERIEL CRESTIN When the bandwidth of your communication with someone has dwindled to dial-up, you need to find a way to get broadband access back. Unfortunately, something’s gone awry here, so you’re not likely to get a lot of help from the other person involved—they’re probably feeling mostly bewildered, helpless, and frustrated. I bet you feel that stuff, too, but this is one of those times when you’ll have to be the one who tries to push past that stuff. That feels like a lot of work, I know. Try to forget about that whole ideal of someone meeting you halfway, and just settle for a meeting, even if you have to do most of the legwork. It’s better than the alternative, trust me. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20)

Your ego is your greatest enemy this week. That pride is bound to get you into all kinds of trouble. Yes, it may be galling to discover that you have to do things you don’t want to do, or that you consider “beneath you,” but failing to do those things doesn’t change the reality of the situation. If you can’t be bothered, you will probably be replaced. If you’re okay with that, then go ahead and cling to your pride. Hopefully it’ll keep you afloat when other aspects of your life come crashing down. If you let go of it now, though, you’re less likely to have to survive a metaphorical tsunami. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)

I wish there were some universally charming, witty, graceful way to deal with the moronic boneheads you have to occasionally encounter, but there isn’t. There is a generally ineffective and stupid way to deal with them—and that is to allow them to ruffle your feathers and make you upset. Unfortunately, that’s frequently the tack you’ve been taking lately. Try to shake it off and regroup, and reload your awesome sense of humor. You can’t do much about how idiotic some people are, but you can remember to laugh about it. And that’s a whole lot better than crying about it.

only the Loch Ness monster could reach, so it may very well be entirely up to you to find your way back to the surface where someone can throw you a life ring buoy and help tow you to drier ground. There are plenty of people on shore with floaties in hand, just waiting for you to bob to the surface. Why don’t you at least head in that direction? You’ve hung out down here long enough.

Leos, especially young Leos, are so eager to be liked and accepted that sometimes you’ll bend over backwards in order to fulfill people’s assumptions about you. Afterwards, you often regret or feel bad about it. Stick to your guns. One of your great strengths is powerful self-knowledge and expression. Bending that to suit others’ perceptions is a huge, pointless waste of time. Be who you are. It’s incredibly freeing to accept that numerous people will like you more, for that, even though a handful won’t like you at all. You’re great. Most of us know it. Now prove you know it.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)

Your ideas about yourself, while accurate, may not always be in your own best interest. Being willing to change or experiment is something that children and teenagers do freely and enthusiastically, but adults are more resistant to. Be playful and allow yourself to constantly test the boundaries of who you are. What was true five years ago may no longer be the case. If you’ve decided to stop growing and changing, you’ve decided to stop living. I hope that’s never the case. Since this week provides ample opportunities to expand the horizons of who you are or could be, please seize them. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)

This week is all about being more open-minded and less snobbish than you have been in the past. Being willing to overlook minor flaws (which are often inflated in others’ minds to be major shortcomings) will not only make you a better, more gracious, and happier person, it’ll also make you a lot less lonely. Much of your isolation is self-imposed, because people don’t always meet your exacting standards. Relax those standards and focus on less superficial traits, and you will find that the overall quality of your life goes up, not down—despite allowing so many “lower-quality” people into it. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)

...to questions from page 4

While it’s certainly safer to expect and prepare for the worst possible outcome (which ensures that most of your surprises will be pleasant ones), it does make for a rather grim, pessimistic outlook on life. What happened to also hoping for the best? Somehow, you’ve lost sight of that, and it’s an important part of the equation. Sure, girding yourself for a worst-case scenario is fine, but remember to envision and aim for a best-case scenario while you’re at it. If you do so, it just might happen—but if you’re not even looking for it, you probably won’t even see it.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)

There are people in your life whose behavior is so far beyond the pale that it feels like there’s no reasonable way to deal with them. That may very well be true. Of course, the normal solution for such difficult people is to simply walk away from them and not interact with them any more. However, sometimes that’s easier said than done, and in some cases, not easily possible (when they’re your in-laws, for example). If that’s the situation you find yourself in, it’s still best to stay as uninvolved as possible. There’s a way to draw firm, clear boundaries without being mean or awful. Find it. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)

You love being a good friend, and it’s wonderful how people can rely on you. However, there are times when your own needs or plans must and should take precedent. You can’t always drop everything and come running every time your friend calls. This week, you may have to fail to come through for someone because life has intervened. They need to understand that—and so do you. Feeling guilty about it serves no one. You’ll probably come through next time, as you have so many times before, so stop feeling bad about this time, and get on with your life. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)

You feel everything so deeply and intensely that sometimes it’s hard for others to really help you. You’re swimming in depths

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)

Make yourself busier. Slowing down may work for some people (and might even be the right solution for you, at times), it’s not the correct solution right now. You have too much time to think at the moment, and your busy mind has certainly taken advantage of it. Time to cut it off. Many of your problems only seem so insurmountable because you actually have too many hours to dwell upon them. Get busier, and several of them might just evaporate. Even if they don’t disappear completely, they’ll almost certainly shrink to a much more manageable size. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, they say—but it’s also contained other places. Having a high degree of confidence (not arrogance; be careful, Aries) can make you a million times more attractive to quality people. Winning the genetic lottery is only part of the picture—being proud of who you are ultimately counts for a whole lot more. This week, instead of worrying about all the superficial stuff that you may not be as happy with, own who you are and all the wonderful qualities you actually have. Turn up the shine, and watch how people respond. You’ll be pretty pleased.
