Lloyd Gilliom
LLOYD GILLIOM PASSES AWAY
And now for some sad news that hits very close to home: Lloyd Brent Gilliom, a member of the MauiTime ohana, passed away on the morning of Wednesday, May 16. He was 71. For most of Hawaii, Lloyd is the father of Amy Hanaiali’i Gilliom and Eric Gilliom, two of Maui’s biggest and most popular musicians, as well as Tim Gilliom, a Hokule‘a crewmember. But he was also a straight-shooting working man who worked with his hands and did real labor (he was the proprietor of Maui Sandblasting and Maui Monument and Granite). Since August 2010, Lloyd was also one of MauiTime’s circulation drivers–one of just a handful of individu-
als who, each week, actually distribute the stacks of MauiTime to our various boxes and circ locations around the island. It’s not an easy job, and requires a good deal of manual labor, but Lloyd really took to it. “He was such a strong, proud man,” said Tommy Russo, MauiTime’s publisher. “I really wish I had the chance to get to know him better. It was very cool to hear stories from the road, from when he was out delivering papers.” Put simply, Lloyd was a good man. We depended on him to help deliver our work each week to our readers, and he never let us down. We will miss him dearly. “Lloyd never met anyone he did not like, and he cared about everyone he came into contact with,” said Mimi Gilliom, his wife of 53 years, in a statement on the passing sent out by Pae ‘Aina Communications. Services and arrangements are pending.
OCCUPY MAUI BUSES!
for all the usual citizen actions to fight the proposed bus fare hike: testify before the Maui County Council on May 24, email Mayor Alan Arakawa and all the council members, call for a special public hearing on the proposed fare hikes, etc. Oh, and one thing, too: “Practice non-violent civil disobedience by putting $1 in the box come July 1st and refusing to get off the bus,” states the flyer. “If we all stick together on this, there is no way they can stop us. It’s impossible for them to arrest us all.” Yeah! Stick it to the Man right where it hurts! In the bus fare box! Oh, and County of Maui–don’t bother trying to undercut the whole thing by keeping the $1 ride fares, because the Occupy troops are already anticipating that: “Due to public outcry, there is now some talk of keeping the $1 fare but still raising the day passes to $5. Should this happen, let’s still all practice civil disobedience and demonstrate our outrage by putting put [sic] just one penny in the fare box and refusing to get off the bus.” Yeah, do that... wait. A penny? Where’d that come from? And why a penny? Who’s got a penny these days? Besides, if the county keeps the $1 ride fare, then sticking just a penny into the box would actually constitute unjust theft. I can totally see where giving $1 instead of $5 is legitimate protest, but a penny? That’s just mean. Then again, it’s been a long time since I read Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, so maybe I’m missing something. ■
Time for some old fashioned radical agitation. Looks like the Occupy Wall Street Maui folks read the recent Maui News story on the proposed Maui Bus fare increases (day passes would now cost $5 instead of $2) because on Saturday, May 19 they sent me an email titled “Occupy Our Buses!” “The Mayor, the Maui County Council, and the Maui County Department of Transportation (DOT) are trying to make this a done deal before you even find out,” read the pdf handbill attached to the email. “There were past opportunities to testify, but no notices were ever posted on the buses. Your final opportunity to give testimony is coming up this Thursday, May 24th, yet there are still no notices on the bus, even though Maui DOT has repeatedly been asked to post them.” Occupy Wall Street Maui is calling
Overheard “I think they should make a lot more marijuana tea. There’s kind of a big market for that.” -Woman in Wailuku Town, May 18

NEWS OF THE WEIRD BY CHUCK SHEPARD
JESUS JAVA
Britain’s ITV1 television network announced plans in April to accept “prop placements” to blend into production of its new reality talent show in which actors compete for the lead role in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. The network said, for example, that it was seeking coffee machines, which piqued the interest of the De’Longhi brand manager, who offered its topof-the-line Magnifica ESAM4200 and, according to its public relations firm, suggested perhaps interrupting the play’s climactic song “The Crucifixion” while Jesus savors a cup brewed from the Magnifica. An April report in London’s The Independent noted that the opera’s composer, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, was on board with the idea, but that the original lyricist, Sir Tim Rice, called it “tasteless” and “tacky.”
GOOD EGGXAMPLE
Each spring in Dongyang, China, the aroma of urine is in the air–specifically, the town’s specialty of eggs boiled in the discharge of young boys (under age 10, typically gathered “fresh” from toilets at local schools). Townspeople have believed for centuries that the eggs, properly cooked, bring health and prosperity. “By eating these eggs,” one shopper told a Reuters reporter in March, “we will not have any pain in our waists, legs and joints. Also, you will have more energy when you work.” In fact, Dongyang officials have proudly proclaimed “virgin boy eggs” as an “intangible cultural heritage.”
TOMB-SWEEPING!
And once again this spring, the Chinese marked the Qingming holiday with celebrations honoring the dead by making offerings to their deceased relatives. At the “tomb-sweeping” festival, people present paper replicas of items their ancestors are believed to need in the afterlife. Uncreative relatives give play money, but the offerings can be elaborate, such as shoes, cars and TV sets, or this year’s hot item–paper iPads, which were selling in Hong Kong for the equivalent of about $3.
HOT WATER
Sound Familiar? McDonald’s still proudly serves its coffee hot, notwithstanding the notorious 1992 lawsuit for burns suffered by Stella Liebeck. In March 2012, Mona Abdelal
filed a lawsuit in Cook County, Ill., over severe burns that her granddaughter, four, suffered when fetching Abdelal’s coffee order from a McDonald’s server. According to the lawsuit, the server violated company policy that requires tightly closed lids on coffee cups and prohibits handing the cups to young children even if they are tightly sealed.
VICTORY!
With Afghanistan’s moralistic Taliban in retreat, one social scourge grows stronger than ever (according to an April Washington Post dispatch from Dehrazi): “bacha bazi,” which are Afghan men’s “dancing boys.” Underage, often poor or fatherless kids become willing “companions” of wealthy men, often for sex. Since young girls are sheltered and chaperoned, only boys are available. Said one man, “You cannot [even] take a wife with you to a party, but a boy you can take anywhere.” The usefulness of a bacha bazi typically ends when he starts growing facial hair, and the boys often drift into becoming pimps or prostitutes.
The most recent government employee to defraud his agency’s worker compensation program (according to prosecutors in Los Angeles) is firefighter Rafael Davis, 35, who received disability payments for about 30 months during 2008-2011 while at the same time engaging in mixed martial arts matches as “The Noodle.” Davis’ record (according to LA Weekly) was 12-2, with seven of those matches coming during his disability period, including six victories. “MMA” (as noted by the newspaper) requires similar “stamina, muscle and coordination” as is required for firefighting.
LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS
In Twin Falls, Idaho, in April, Dylan Contreras, 19, became the most recent person arrested while trying to avoid police by giving a fake name (“Velesco”) even though his real name (the one on outstanding warrants) was tattooed in plain sight on his forearm. ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1549n3

Rebirth of the Cool J Why I took up skateboarding at age 40 By Anthony Pignataro
ust after sunset one recent Sunday evening, there were a handful of 20-somethings at the Kalama Skate Park in Kihei. While one guy with iPod buds in his ears skated the bowl, a shirtless skater with a lit cigarette in his hand rolled up and over the yellow wooden ramps across the skatepark. That he was even on a board was amazing, since five minutes before he’d taken a nasty spill while jumping a dirt bike off one of the ramps. Later, another guy on a bike told his friend, “I had a successful day; I haven’t fallen once,” shortly before nearly riding into a fourth skateboarder riding off another ramp. Spills and near-misses aside, all of the riders were clearly young, talented and (with the exception of the smoking) cool. They were cool in ways I never was when I was their age, and never could be again. Their skills were light years beyond anything I was capable of, and yet, somewhere in the back of my mind, there was this crazy notion that they and I weren’t so different after all. Guess that’s what happens when you buy a skateboard. A few months ago, after a lifetime of not skating, of not paying any attention whatsoever to skateboards or what we think of as the skateboard culture or even seeing any skateboard videos or films like Lords of Dogtown, I decided that I needed to own a skateboard. And not just any skateboard, but one designed and built on Maui. One that was of Maui, and said it was from Maui. And not only own it, but I needed to learn to ride it. Why this suddenly happened, I can’t say. I never had a skateboard as a kid. In fact, I don’t recall ever even wanting one. Most of my friends had one, but getting atop one and then riding

down the street and grinding a curb just never appealed to me. Maybe my newfound fascination with skateboards had something to do with me seeing a photo, released by the Defense Department and posted on Wikimedia Commons, showing a United States Marine in full battle gear, with rifle and pack and helmet, holding a scuffed green “experimental urban combat skateboard” during a 1999 military exercise. Maybe it was the issues of Transworld Skateboarding that mysteriously started appearing in my mailbox (addressed to someone else, sure, but who am I to refuse a magazine that keeps coming, month after month?). Or, possibly, it had something to do with me turning 40 in April. In any case, I knew what I was contemplating was somewhat controversial. Ok, very controversial. “I believe that when you turn 30, you should get off the board for good, and leave skateboarding to others,” Garrison Frost wrote on the blog The Aesthetic in April 2006. “By the time you’re 30, you should own a car, live under a different roof than your parents, have had at least one meaningful relationship, have a job that doesn’t involve working a cash register, own a suit, have a more rational relationship to your parents, not need to get drunk to have fun and be able to hold your own in conversations about real things. When you ride a skateboard at that age, you communicate to others that you renounce these things, that you wish they did not apply to you. In short, you look like a 30-year-old who wishes he was an 11-year-old.” And he was talking about guys who turned 30. But 40? It didn’t matter. I was getting my board. I went online, discovering fairly quickly that Hi-Tech in Kahului is pretty much the only retailer of locally-designed skateboards. I
was there soon after, standing awkwardly in the cave-like skateboard room way in the back of the store with Davey Delong, the store’s skate buyer and team manager. About my height and age, he’s been with Hi-Tech about a decade. He’s organized local skateboard contests in the past, and he looked like he came right from Central Casting: dark t-shirt and shorts, arms covered in tats, a long dreadlocked ponytail hanging down his back. The shop was small, but intimidating. There were boards of all shapes and sizes and colors. There were aggressive longboards for downhill runs, and tiny retro boards that looked like neon plastic toys. Over in one corner stood a massive board; tall as a man, it was a like someone had bolted giant trucks onto a wooden surfboard, which is pretty much what it was. It looked like a novelty, but Delong said it could be ridden. It wasn’t easy, because riders had to walk all over it like old surf guys on their longboards, but it could do amazing things. rowsing among the myriad decks mounted on the walls, I found exactly what I was looking for: a wide modern board with the underside painted glossy black. And in the center between the truck mounting holes was a giant anchor beneath the Hawaiian Islands, surrounded by the words “Hi-Tech Boardshop” and “Maui Hawaii.” I picked up the deck. It was heavier than I had imagined it would be. “I love this board,” I told Delong. “Thanks,” he said. “I designed it.” Delong asked me what I wanted to do with the board. I told him nothing special–no skateparks, no pools, no fancy tricks. I just wanted to ride, straight and smooth. He looked thoughtful, nodded, then got to work attaching grip tape,
B
risers, trucks and black wheels made for street riding. About 20 minutes and $130 later, I was carrying my own skateboard out to my truck. Delong told me later he’s also in his 40s, but he’s been skating non-stop since he was a kid. He too has heard people saying skateboarding was only for kids, and no “serious” adult would get near one, but he’s watched more and more older guys walking into his shop. “Skateboarding was ‘outlaw’ back in the ‘80s, but now it’s cool again,” he said. “I’ve heard people saying that people our age shouldn’t be skating, but they’re so far removed, they’re not ever going to get it. But I run into lots of people who may have skated in their youth, back in the ‘80s, and now they want to get back into it. Some guys are getting boards–what they always wanted back when they were kids, that they can put on the wall, and then another one that they’ll actually ride. They typically go for old school pool boards, but longboards are another huge market that’s blown up.” ith new skateparks opening in Lahaina and Hana, there are more places on Maui for people to skate legally, without concern of violating county ordinance 10-52-150 (“No person upon skateboards or similar devices shall go upon any roadway except while crossing such roadway within a crosswalk”) than ever before. They’re also larger, more fun and safer than ever. But I’m getting ahead of myself. I bought that board from Delong to ride down the street, not fly off the lip of a bowl. And while it looked badass leaning against the wall of my apartment, I didn’t buy it to be a decoration. Not knowing anyone offhand who could teach me how to ride (my good friend Chris, who’s a year old than me, still skateboards, but he’s currently stationed with the US Army in Japan, and isn’t really available to give lessons), I went online. There I found Learntorideaskateboard.com, which offers a free download of Learn to Ride a Skateboard, a ridiculously comprehensive and easy to understand video by Eric Muss-Barnes that should be mandatory viewing for anyone contemplating touching a board. Within minutes of clicking play on my laptop, I was standing on my board in the kitchen, moving myself back
W
and forth along the counter, trying to figure out whether I was regular or goofy-footed. Oddly, leading with either my left or right foot seemed to feel the same (ie, weird), so I just decided I was regular footed and stuck with it. Now I normally wear slippers wherever I go, and while I’ve seen plenty of kids (and adults) riding skateboards in Locals or Surfahs, the thought of my board’s brand new black polyurethane wheels crunching over my toes was enough to get me to lace up sneakers. “Good luck,” my girlfriend Angie told me as I picked up my board one early Saturday morning and headed for the door. “Don’t worry,” I said. “I won’t be long.” Moments later I was standing in the parking lot, the board resting on the seed pod-covered asphalt in front of me. It wasn’t the best place to learn to ride, I know, but carrying my board across the complex to a sidewalk seemed lame. After making sure there were no moving cars around me (and no one walking nearby who might witness a humiliating fall), I gingerly placed my left foot over the trucks near the nose, took a breath and then pushed off. The board, with me balanced precariously atop it, rolled across the pavement, into the slight gutter depression that ran down the center of the parking lot’s traffic lane, and then back up onto the rockier asphalt. When I came up to a row of parked cars I dropped my right foot back to the ground, and came to a quick stop. I stood there a moment, amazed that I’d somehow ridden the board 20 feet without any kind of mishap, then remembering that kids who aren’t yet 10 can skateboard well, I moved the board around and got on again. was only out about 15 minutes that first morning, riding wobbly but mostly straight lines from one row of parked cars to another. It took me a while to stop reminding myself to keep my knees bent, but eventually I calmed down and just rode. A friend of mine who makes a living teaching people to surf once told me it’s hard to teach analysts to surf because they’re always thinking, and surfing (and, I presume, skateboarding) works only when you stop thinking about what you’re doing. After buying a cheap skate key and tightening the bushings on the trucks (Delong had warned me that they were pretty loose when I left Hi-Tech), I started riding again and
I
again. Sometimes in the early evening hours after work, sometimes on weekend mornings. Each time I rode further and longer. I practiced “carving,” and can pretty much turn either left or right with some degree of confidence, but kickturns still elude me. Eventually I grew so bold I ventured out of the complex and onto sidewalks that took me into the surrounding residential neighborhood. Angie also decided to get into act and bought a pair roller skates, and sometimes we head out together, her on skates and me rolling alongside, just standing on my board while the world rolls past. hen I told one friend I still haven’t fallen, he said it was because I was doing it wrong, and there’s some truth to that. Falling comes from taking risks, from pushing yourself to try new moves and tricks. But that’s not why I got the board. Maybe I am going through a midlife crisis. Maybe I am trying to relive a youth I never had in the first place. But I’ll tell you a secret: by definition, no one who rides a skateboard is old. No matter your age, if you’re on a skateboard, you’re not old. Period. Angie and I learned this during one recent skating trip. We were a few streets over from our complex, just riding up and down an empty cul de sac. It was about an hour before the sunset when two young girls, maybe eight and 11, rode up to us on inline skates. The four of us skated together in the cul de sac, laughing and having a blast. The younger girl asked to borrow my skateboard, and I let her (after removing her skates, she rode the board barefoot with more skill than I’ve yet mustered). But after getting off, she suddenly looked at Angie. “How old are you?” the girl asked suspiciously. “How old do you think I am?” Angie said. The girl thought a moment. “Twenty.” “How old do you think I am?” I asked impetuously. The girl thought again. “Twenty-nine,” she said. Angie and I looked at each other. No question about it, we’d be skating again and again. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1549L1

Giggling, Living Sculptures Watching keiki learn about the arts at Camp Kaluanui By Jen Russo
D
uring one recent stop by the Nui No’eau Visual Center campus on a sunny afternoon, I found a group of keiki on the lawn holding brightly colored parachutes in big circles. They were observing how they caught the wind and made shapes with the fabric. It was a giant, colorful living sculpture that giggled its way across the lawn before disbanding, after which the kids headed down to a printmaking studio for more artistic moments. In the summer, the serene grounds of the Hui transform into an art school campus packed with kids as young as five, and 200-plus wild imaginations buzzing around, fueled by art supplies and studio time. This incredible convergence of creative minds on Maui happens with a purpose: Camp Kaluanui and the older youth programs seek to harness the power of the arts to improve the Maui community. “Arts education helps young people perceive and think in new ways,” says Kelly McHugh, director of Youth Programs at the Hui. “[It] provides a form of nonverbal communication that can strengthen the presentation of ideas and emotions, develops intuition, sensitivity, reasoning, imagination and dexterity–plus skills in critical thinking, language and cooperative learning that enables them to recognize new solutions. Our camp programs provide the tools, mentors and space to spark the creativity of Maui’s young artists.”

The Hui keeps class sizes small at their camps to keep one on one interaction a priority. The kids also get to experience quite a bit of the grounds on the historic Kaluanui estate. Camp drop off and sign in starts at 8:30 to 9am. Once settled, the kids get down to their creative business–namely, morning workshops in ceramics, painting, found object art and sculpture. Later it’s outside time, a picnic lunch on the Hui lawn and exercise activities. In the afternoon, the students trek off to a new art studio where they might try jewelry making, mural making, theater and creative movement, printmaking and everything in between. he Hui supplies plenty of equipment and tools to inspire, equipment that some schools might not be able to offer in their art programs. The teachers also switch off, exposing the kids to lots of different art disciplines and approaches. Materials include metals, wire, found objects created by Mother Nature on the grounds, canvas, posterboard, clay, acrylic, tempra, watercolor, pencil and ink. These busy hands and minds have the opportunity for exposure to a huge array of diverse mediums in that week, using the professional spaces that the Hui has available. At the end of the week, each student brings home a certificate endorsing their newly learned knowledge of art.

his year’s summer art camps are themed each week. There’s “On the Wild Side: To the Deepest Depths of your Imagination,” “WWPD (What Would Picasso Do?): Learning from the Masters,” “Radical Rainforest: An Adventure in Cryptozoology,” “Spirited Away, Magical Masks, Dragons, and More!,” “Weird Science: The Art of Invention,” “What Lies Beneath: Uncovering the Underwater Universe” and “Jammin til the Jam is Through, Art Inspired by Music.” There are also scholarships available for Camp Kaluanui, with applications online at huinoeau.com. McHugh says about a quarter of the students receive tuition assistance. “As a nonprofit, we rely on charitable contributions to ensure our programs and services are accessible to the largest possible audience,” says McHugh. “With the support of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture & the Arts, donors through our annual Art Affair benefit, membership dues and other donations, we are able to offer need-based scholarships to children whose families cannot afford tuition.” To register, go to huinoeau.com or call 808-572-6560. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1549L2

Sharing is Caring at 100 Wines in Lahaina BY JEN RUSSO

ringing the holy gastric trinity of bread, cheese and wine is not the only thing 100 Wines in Lahaina is doing well. I’ve had a few groups of friends dine there, and they’ve enjoyed the shared-plate style of dining as well as the European atmosphere. The menu is easy to digest: everything is listed on one page in categories like apps, soups, salads, boards to share, tartines, flatbreads and entrees. But the food delivery is more playful–most dishes come out on dark wooden cutting board looka-likes; the sides and dressings served in jars and ceramics; and the bread comes heated in a paper bag. “We are so excited to be creating this space here and using it as a new restaurant idea,” says Chef Lyndon Honda. “These dishes are made for sharing. The Brussels sprouts in a jar is an especially beautiful presentation, and the flatbreads are phenomenal.” Chef Honda makes his own anchovy gar-

redesigned 100 Wines-style, which is decidedly old world European, as has the front bar and some of the dining room. Dark wood, rustic metal and inky lighting dominate the interior. The dishes are part pupu, part meal, with sharing-is-caring the dominant philosophy here. The croque madame tartine was an impressive mouthful of melted gruyere cheese, proscuitto, Dijon, a parmesan reduction and soft garlic toast with a fried egg on top. We sliced it into pieces and dug in. The flatbreads are larger share portions of bread and cheese but more like pizza. Best Of Maui Awards Ballot It’s that time again
A FEW NOTES ABOUT BALLOT STUFFING:
Time to cast your votes for our annual BEST OF MAUI. Usually, this ballot is decked out with whatever theme we’ve chosen. But this year, we’ve come up with another theme so cool, we want to keep it under wraps. Seriously, you’re gonna really dig it.
While most people play it straight, every year a few nefarious folks attempt to stuff the ballot box. To cut down on this, and to ensure the results are fair and accurate, here are a few rules:
As usual, categories are organized into five sections: arts & entertainment; food & drink; goods & services; politics & environment; and sports & leisure. We’ve added some new categories this year to spice things up, but you’ll still find all the old standbys. Please VOTE IN AT LEAST 40 CATEGORIES if you want your ballot to be counted. Voting ends May 31.
★ O NLY ONE (1) BALLOT PER PERSON ★ A LL BALLOTS MUST BE SIGNED ★ N O PHOTOCOPIED BALLOTS WILL BE ACCEPTED
★ M ULTIPLE BALLOTS IN THE SAME
HANDWRITING WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED
★ B ALLOTS MUST BE MAILED IN; NO MORE THAN THREE (3) BALLOTS PER
ENVELOPE. ENVELOPES MUST HAVE A RETURN ADDRESS
★ EACH ONLINE BALLOT MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A VALID E-MAIL ADDRESS
You may also notice these convenient little QR codes throughout the ballot that you can scan with your smart phone at any time to take you to our online ballot.
Any ballots that violate these rules—or that sufficiently rouse our suspicion— will not be tallied. We hope it isn’t necessary, but if anyone does attempt to unfairly sway the outcome, we reserve the right to create a Best Ballot Stuffer category. This is not something you want to win—trust us.
YOU MUST FILL OUT 40 CATEGORIES FOR YOUR VOTE TO COUNT! NOTE: In categories with the LOCAL stamp, only votes for locally owned businesses will be counted; no corporate chains. VOTE ONLINE AT MAUITIME.COM OR YOU MAY MAIL YOUR BALLOT TO: 33 N. Market St., Suite 201, Wailuku, HI 96793

MAUI ROLLER GIRLS SIDESHOW – We’ve seen the Maui Roller Girls (the Crazy 808s, for you fans) absolutely dominate their opponents on the roller rink (or the Boys & Girls Club blacktop, depending on where you are). Now here’s your chance to see them perform in something a bit more refined... or not. “Experience the magic and music of the Maui Rollergirls as you have never seen them before,” states a press release announcing the Maui Roller Girls Sideshow. “Every Maui Rollergirl event is a bit of a carnival, but this time, we are taking it to a whole new level.” That the girls are saying “carnival attire is encouraged” means this is gonna be something to see (there will be a $100 gift certificate to Skin Deep Tattoo for the most elaborate costume). Also featuring DJ Tee and hypnotist Joshua Blue. $10 presale, $15 at the event. Doors open at 8:30pm. Three’s Bar and Grill (1945 S. Kihei Rd.); mauirollergirls.com

TUESDAY, MAY 29 HELP THE HUMPBACK – Whale Season may be over, but just because the jet skis are whizzing off shore doesn’t mean the hard work is done. Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is recruiting volunteers on the island of Maui. This stuff is not as hardcore as swabbing the deck on a Sea Shepherd boat, but it can be just as rewarding. Sign up for training and then maybe you too can join an active and dedicated cadre of sanctuary volunteers. Free. 6-8pm. Kihei Learning Center Conference Room, (726 S. Kihei Rd.); 808-879-2818 Ext. 30
TACO TUESDAY – Please help honor the international appeal of the taco on its name day, which is Tuesday. It’s easy, really–just go to your nearest cantina and let them do the rest. Ocean’s offers tacos for $2.50, Diamonds has them for a buck (3-5pm) as does Haui’s Lifes a Beach (9pm), while Ale House and Spanky’s has them for $2 each. Eat them where you will, get them crunchy or soft, meat-filled or not, knock ‘em back with a beer or horchata, but just do it on Tuesday. You’ll be glad you did.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 30 DREAM IT OR SCHEME IT – This Wednesday kicks off the Peter & Melinda Wing experience at public libraries across the island. This husband-and-wife duo love to tell stories and sing play music. Their “Dreamers and Schemers: Folks with Big Ideas!” is interactive, with lots of humorous stories, songs and skits derived from traditional folklore and music. Free. 10-11am. GROW AND COOK MUSHROOMS – This month’s installment of Slow Food Education brings mushroom expert Richard Cruse of Ecological Edibles to Maui to talk about the delicious nutritional importance of this famous fungal food source. In fact, you can grow them in a home mushroom sack or outdoor mushroom bed. “This will be a starter course that will help open the interests for future advanced classes that will teach people how to make their own spawn, create their own cultures and isolate wild or outdoor samples,” says Cruse. Each session cost $15 for Slow Food Maui members and $20 for non-members. 6-7:30pm. Maui Culinary Academy, P‘ina Building (310 W. Ka’ahumanu Ave., Kahului); www.slowfoodmaui.org

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
Relationships require change. It’s one thing when it’s an annoying habit or two that you’ve been asked to curb, and quite another when it’s a fundamental aspect of who you are (unless that happens to be something you’ve seriously wanted to change, on your own (hurray, you now have support!)). It’s up to you to assess whether requested changes are realistically achievable, or if they’re not something you want or feel able to do anything about. So what’ll it be? Can you be the version of you they want? If not, it’s simple. Walk away—because who they want is actually someone else.
Since you’re one of the most excitingly dynamic signs in the zodiac, it’s always surprising when you’re astonished or put out by changes in others. Perhaps it’s because you’re used to being the one who’s able to turn on a dime and transform yourself to suit any new situation, relationship, or interest. When someone else undergoes that kind of rapid metamorphosis, it can freak you out. This week, someone you know is turning over a new leaf, getting a drastic makeover, or pursuing a radical new direction. It’d be nice if you could get on board, so don’t freak out too long. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22)
Expecting people to show up to relationships without any baggage is unrealistic. However, it’s reasonable to hope that their emotional luggage isn’t too heavy a burden. Expect a carry-on or two—who travels without those, these days? When they show up with a full set of Samsonite and a trunk, though, it’s time to give yourself a reality check. Is this stuff you’d be willing to help carry for more than the few yards from here to a taxicab? If you’re not willing to shoulder this burden, don’t try—dropping it half a mile down the road won’t be doing anyone any favors. Instead, put it down now, and walk on, unencumbered. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
Your competitive streak can inspire you to achieve greatness. However, when you don’t exercise proper judgment, it can also compel you to participate in ridiculous follies. Trying to outdo someone at something no one else cares about, for example, is ultimately going to make you look foolish—ironically, especially if you win. Go ahead and be joyfully and playfully competitive; it’s fun, after all, as long as you don’t get so results-oriented that you become a sore loser. It’s also a great source of fuel for your tank—just make sure you’re pointed in the right direction before you hit the gas.
Even if you weren’t the one who did any wrongdoing, you could be blamed for allowing it to happen and not offering even some token resistance or objection. Don’t expect someone who suffered to simply forget the fact that you stood idly by, even if you felt helpless or powerless at the time. Standing up for what’s right is almost always a good thing to do. Sure, there’s something to the concept of picking your battles—however, remember if you choose not to fight one, those who do fight it may no longer consider you their ally.

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
You’re not exactly suffering through a jail sentence, though it may feel like that at times. Luckily, like most prison terms, this situation has an end date, too. Though the date of your release may feel like it’s eons away, have faith that it will come, and that you’re drawing closer to it every day. Also, bear in mind that just like many sentences of imprisonment, this unpleasant situation can be shortened dramatically by exhibiting extremely good behavior. And if it’s really and truly unbearable, consider this: a prison break is always possible. Just be sure you take into account the potential consequences of such a drastic measure (especially if it fails) before you give it a go. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
Children get very attached to certain objects like blankets or dolls, and cling to them whenever they feel upset, scared, or insecure. Of course, as we grow, we learn to shed these comforts, but often they’re replaced by other, perhaps subtler or more intangible ones. What’s your security blanket? It’s okay if you have one, but try to make sure it’s something that’s ultimately good for you (in other words, not a martini or a cigarette). If it is something that’s probably not a positive force in your life, start weaning yourself off of it today. If you can go without a replacement, that’s great. If you need one, try to make it something good for you—like exercise, or salad.
...to questions from page 4
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
QUIZunderstood ANSWERS
You’re making the wrong wishes, Pisces. How do I know? It’s because every time one of your desires is fulfilled, you’re still dissatisfied. That’s because many of your dreams and wants have been thrust upon you—by clever advertisements, compelling lovers, or other circumstances. Some of them have even completely eclipsed the things you actually want. It may be a noble and mostly good idea to embrace the things your lover or boss wants for you—but not so completely that you forget your own wishes and fantasies. This week, make sure your heart’s true desires get the same time and attention you give to your adopted goals.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22)
While I understand the source of your anger and frustration, getting pissed on someone else’s behalf should only be taken so far. I’ve seen Libras carry a grudge long after the people involved have actually forgiven each other and moved on. Your loyalty and empathy are admirable, but there’s a line. This week, you’re in danger of crossing it. Your sympathetic indignation was charming at first, but since at this point no one else cares about this as much as you do, it’s starting to seem weird. There’s plenty of stuff in your own life to get worked up about. Drop this.
Aries are frequently solo adventurers, but I think you’re truly at your best when you hitch your wagon to someone else’s. When your world-view expands to include others, you grow and excel in ways you couldn’t even imagine before. Whatever it is that inspires you to include others in your exploits (common reasons include falling in love or having kids), I’m excited for you. You’d never otherwise know just how incredibly creative and resourceful you can actually be. It may be easier to go it solo, but life’s richer when you’re part of a team. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21)
Scheduling life isn’t that fun or sexy, but it’s sometimes necessary. Busy people don’t always remember to make room for important stuff until it’s too late to squeeze it in. So remember to allocate some time for activities that are still vital to your happiness, even if they’re not an obvious priority. This week that stuff is all too likely to slip through the cracks, otherwise, and be replaced by stuff that’s much less important, just much more likely to grab your attention. If you don’t attend to the crucial stuff now, by the time you actually do get to it, it may be too late.
A lot of life is accidental, isn’t it? We navigate through our existences with the best of intentions, but only a fraction of those actually sees fruition. The rest of life is the stuff that happens to us that we can’t predict, or things we do without thinking or meaning to. Obviously, you can’t completely control your life. But I reckon you could exert a tiny bit more influence on which directions it takes. 49% of your life may always be made up of things you can’t control or anticipate, but this week, do what you need to do to ensure that 51% of it is composed of things you consciously choose.
