This year, Terryl Vencl wants the County to give the Maui Visitors Bureau
$3.5 million
Here’s why the County Council should finally tell her no. 10 PG

SPECIAL PULLOUT 19
TALKING ABOUT THE MVB [The following letters are in response to Anthony Pignataro’s May 17, 2012 cover story “This Year Terryl Vencl wants the County to give the Maui Visitors Bureau $3.5 million.”]
As a representative for an organization that received an Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) grant, also overseen by Teena Rasmussen’s county Office of Economic Development (OED), I find the assertion that there is no accountability patently absurd. The final reporting required not only an accounting of grant monies spent, but every dime that went through my organization’s hands. Copies of every piece of collateral, forms, marketing, press coverage or anything made, said or produced by the organization must also be included. Photos and video of the product are required along with surveys of attendees, vendors and suppliers. Documentation does not take hours but weeks. And as Rasmussen said, no grant money is released without original invoices for the expenses expressly approved in the lengthy grant application process. While I recognize their (Maui County OED and HTA) fiduciary responsibility to the taxpayers, as far as I’m concerned the reporting requirements are excessive. While I appreciate the support, I hope to never apply for another county or HTA grant. It was just too much work. Comparing MVB to the Maui Hotel Association is also flawed. The hotel association lobbies for the hotel industry to a small audience of legislators, necessitating a small staff and a small budget. Since they serve a small group of private corporations, it is no wonder that it is privately funded. MVB markets Maui for the good of us all, whether you like it or not. Ads in national publications don’t come cheap. I may not agree with everything they do–MVB did not support my event–but I still believe the job they do is important and should be funded by taxpayers. Maui’s three-legged stool of an economy is getting wobbly but the tourism leg is the one that
keeps it steady. If I was on the council and the choice was to fund a new sports arena (really, a sports arena?) or MVB, I would vote for the latter. Hands down. -Terrie Eliker, via Mauifeed.com Thank you for publishing the exposure article on Maui Visitors Bureau. Here are some more questions and some I do have the answers for. Where is Maui Visitors Bureau? They are located in an industrial park where visitors cannot find them. Why are they not in a tourist friendly location? They focus on assisting the visitors before they arrive on Maui by means of their website. What hours are they open? I don’t know, but when I got there they were closed and they do not publish their hours on the door. Why would MVB’s website still have a shopping article for a shopping center that was demolished in 2006-2007? “Promendade of over 20 boutiques, galleries located adjacent to the Kapalua Bay Hotel.” Maui needs promotion by people who understand what visitors like to do and publish, assist and serve Maui best. They are lucky to get $3 million per year from HVB. Giving MVB 30 times more money has not made them efficient. - Nancy Stewart, via email I had the pleasure of attending the Philadelphia Flower show as a Hawaii exhibitor and was in an adjacent booth to the MVB. They do an amazing and tireless job representing and promoting Maui. Any viable business knows the importance of marketing. Considering the economic value of visitor spending I’d say their budget is actually pretty low. Three cheers to Terryl and everyone else that works for the MVB. Keep up your good work and ignore the small minds who don’t “get it.” I am tired of this writer’s constant negativity! -Melanie Boudar, via Mauifeed.com I’m a local, been here for seven years. I love Hawaii. I love Maui. Love your paper. Don’t let it end–don’t ever let it end. I’m just calling about the article about Terryl Vencl. Yeah–what’s up with her salary? A hundred thirty-five thousand dollars a year to do that? I love Maui: I would do her job for $35,000 a year! She’s just robbing Maui. Totally–you can quote me on that. I would do her job for $35,000 a year. I don’t care what it would take. She’s just lining her pockets and robbing all of us. She’s a reverse Robin Hood. It’s just my opinion, of course, but I’m sure a lot of other people had that opinion when they saw her salary. A lot of people are making less than $35,000 doing harder jobs. -Wayne Enger, via voicemail

Talk of the Island
BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO
TALES FROM THE PELLET GUN It took a few days to nail down the key details, but it’s now looking like a Maui Police Officer shot and killed Marshall “Mosi” Langford, 31, of Wailuku during a May 22 confrontation involving a stolen car. According to news accounts as well as statements put out by the County of Maui and the Maui PD, Langford was at the wheel of a blue 2010 Chevy Impala rental car that was reported stolen a week before when police spotted him in the parking lot of the Mana Kai Maui Resort in Kihei. Witnesses cited by the Maui News report that three officers surrounded the vehicle. Police said they ordered Langford to stop. Instead, “Police said Langford tried to drive away and had allegedly pulled out a handgun and pointed it at an officer,” wrote Maui News reporter Lila Fujimoto on May 25. One of the officers, an 18-year veteran, according to the Maui PD, then fired at Langford. Witnesses reportedly heard three shots, and Langford died at the scene. The Maui PD said they later recovered a handgun, a sawed-off shotgun and a pipe “commonly used to smoke Crystal Methamphetamine” from the car. It’s all cut and dry, except buried at the end of the May 25 Maui News story was the revelation that Langford's “handgun” was actually an Airsoft pellet gun. So Langford, for whatever reason, allegedly reached for a pellet gun and not a shotgun when cornered by the cops pointing actual guns at him. It’s a strange narrative. Given the prominent mention of the smoking pipe in Fujimoto’s story, and the clear implication that Langford was a bad person, can a person smoke enough Ice to suddenly think that the fake gun next to him is real? Is it possible, in these times we live in, for someone not to know what happens when you brandish something that looks like a gun in front of a cop? Now add to it the fact that the PD felt compelled–during an active
investigation!–to release photos of the recovered guns to the Maui News, which printed them on the front page of their May 25 issue. That shows at least tacit acknowledgement that they know their department’s reputation is less than stellar, right? Langord's gun After all, papers across Hawaii ran a story the day after the shooting about Maui Police Officer Paul Bailey (also an 18-year veteran) getting booked for third degree sexual assault involving a 15-year-old girl. Anyway, officer-involved shootings are rare on Maui, to be sure, and there are similarities between the Langford shooting and one dating back to January 2004, when two Maui PD officers shot and killed Lisa Kaina, who was allegedly driving a stolen car in Paia. Then, the officers justified the use of lethal force by saying her driving posed a danger to them. The key issue with the Langford shooting–like the previous Kaina shooting–isn’t the alleged car thief’s previous police record, or even whether the shooting was justified. Even if Langford was just reaching for a pellet gun (or even a phone, as his mother insists), post-shooting investigations have exonerated cops all over the country because in a split second, who can say that that small, dark object the suspect just grabbed isn’t a gun? No, the key issue here is that the Maui PD will not identify the 18year veteran cop who shot and killed Langford. To this day, they’ve refused to identify the cops who killed Kaina, though the “Shine the Light on Maui Police” blog (mauipolice.blogspot.com)
reported that one of them was Nelson Johnson, the same cop who allegedly assaulted MauiTime Publisher Tommy Russo in April 2011 (the blog hasn’t posted anything new since June 2011). State law–pushed through by heavy lobbying by the State of Hawaii Police Officers Organization (SHOPO)– protects the Maui PD from identifying officers who do things like run afoul of Internal Affairs or kill people in the line of duty. It’s an absurd, insulting law that needs to end, but given the chokehold SHOPO has on the state Legislature, efforts to change it are likely to die as fast as Langford.
Agency (EPA) hearing on haze and our beloved national parks. “The Clean Air Act requires states, in coordination with EPA, the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Forest Service, and other interested parties, to develop and implement air quality protection plans to reduce the pollution that causes visibility impairment in 156 national parks and wilderness areas,” states the EPA’s press release on the hearing (another will take place June 1 on Hawaii Island). “Agencies have been monitoring visibility in national parks and wilderness areas since 1988. In

CAN’T SEE THE FOREST OR THE TREES
We know that the burning of sugarcane in the fields causes a lot of fire and smoke and pollution. But does it cause enough haze to restrict visibility in Haleakala National Park? That’s a key question that should come up during tonight’s Environmental Protection
Overheard FIRST MAN: “Hey, is my hair all curly and is there smoke coming out of my ears?” SECOND MAN: “No. Should there be?” FIRST MAN: “Yeah. Back there I just got ahold of the right two wires and...” -Kihei Kalama Village, May 26
1999, the EPA announced a major effort to improve air quality in national parks and wilderness areas through the Clean Air Act Regional Haze Rule.” Now the haze comes from a variety of sources–the biggest being vog, which we can’t do anything about. But the burning of sugarcane by Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar also produces haze, which certainly restricts visibility in Haleakala National Park. While residents shouldn’t expect the EPA to shut down the HC&S mill, they should understand that haze can be mitigated. Or, at the very least, they could start seriously monitoring things like fugitive dust, cane smoke and mill emissions (the findings on such emissions in the EPA’s 81-page Technical Support Document are “inconclusive”). Those attending the hearing, though, should keep in mind that all the EPA will talk about is how haze impairs visibility–not health effects from cane burning. Just haze and visibility. Got it? Good. The hearing starts at 5:30pm tonight at the UH Maui College’s Pilina Multipurpose Room. ■

A&B Donation to Edventure
A&B HONORS TUITION GRANT RECIPIENTS
The Edventure program at UH Maui College has been offering non-credit course training and skill building to more than 12,000 Maui students annually. For those of us who lack deep pockets, Alexander & Baldwin Foundation is helping keep costs down with tuition grants. On June 7, UH Maui will host a reception at Leis Family Class Act in the Paina Building from 5:30 to 7pm to celebrate those who’ve benefited. During the reception, A&B plans to reveal a check to the Office of Continuing Education (OCET). “The generous support of A&B over the years has helped many businesses, and thousands of business-minded individuals within our community, to thrive and flourish,” said Sue Feltz, EdVenture’s business program coordinator. Since 2000, A&B’s donations to EdVenture have helped Maui’s unemployed, entrepreneurs and small businesses by building programs at the college and providing tuition grants to individuals, enabling greater access to training for the Maui community.
“Maui is where A&B first set its roots over 140 years ago, and it is still where the majority of our employees live and work to this day, so we have a strong interest in supporting efforts that strengthen our community,” says Meredith Ching, president of the A&B Foundation. “We have been most pleased with the initiatives for continuing small business education that have been promulgated by UHMC and are proud that we’ve been able to support these efforts over the past 15 years. When local businesses are strong and dynamic, the entire community benefits. Maui College’s multi-faceted approach to bring new ideas, training, and innovation to the community and has been an important part of the formula for giving our business community the best possible tools for success.” Tim Lara, owner of Hawaiian Paddle Sports and recent recipient of funds, said, “A&B’s training funds helped our guides become certified Marine Naturalists, which allows our company to stay on the forefront of sustainable ecotourism. We’re proud to be one of only three Maui companies that are recognized by the Hawaii Ecotourism Association. The A&B Training Grant helped us afford to continue our dedication of preserving Maui’s fragile marine ecology.” The reception will include complimentary pupus and beverages donated from several Maui businesses that have benefited from A&B’s training funds.

HALLOWEEN T-SHIRT CONTEST
Lahainatown Action Committee is holding a contest for a new “Halloween in Lahaina” t-shirt design. The winning design will effectively reflect the theme ‘Great Energy’ at this year’s event. “Lahaina is known for their famous artists,” said Jill Holley, LAC Executive Board Member. “It is the goal of the LAC to invite the public to share their creative ideas of this well known event with our community.” Proceeds from sales of the official 2012 T-shirt will benefit the 2012 Lahaina Halloween Celebration. As well as being recognized for the winning design, the artist will receive a “Living Large in Lahaina Package,” which includes a “staycation” at a Maui hotel plus Lahaina merchant certificates and gifts totaling more than $500. Those who want to enter should submit designs in vector format or PDF. All designs must include the words “2012 Halloween in Lahaina.” Designs should include a minimum of four colors and should show off a positive, non-offensive design that would be good for families including keiki (children). Images will be placed on black and white t-shirts. The deadline for submission of artwork is 5pm on Monday, July 2, 2012. The competition is open to everyone. The artwork must be original and unpublished with the image being a recognizable Halloween In Lahaina theme. Entries must be delivered electronically to lynn@visitlahaina.com. There is a non-refundable entry fee of $25 and the contest is limited to five (5) entries per artist. For more information, go to the
Lahaina Town Action Committee website at visitlahaina.com or call Lynn Donovan at Lahaina Town Action Committee at 808-667-9175.
KAHULUI RESIDENT WINS $15,000 PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM
Passion for Zip Paks paid off this month when Kahului resident Simeon Tabieros entered the “Join the RevoluSun Home Solar System Giveaway” and won the grand prize: a $15,000 photovoltaic system. Zippy’s and Revolusun teamed up for the campaign to increase sustainability awareness. “We enjoyed working with Zippy’s Restaurant for a second year now to help build a cleaner, smarter Hawaii by encouraging people to think about energy and ways to conserve it,” said Eric Carlson of RevoluSun. “Through its use of earth-friendly packaging and support of Hawaii’s businesses by buying local, Zippy’s Restaurant is just as committed to the sustainability of our local communities as we are. We congratulate our grand prize winner, Mr. Tabieros, and look forward to helping him start saving on his electric bill through the benefits of solar.” “Once again, this was a win-win partnership for us,” said Jeanine Mamiya-Kalahiki, Zippy’s Restaurants, Marketing Manager. “We are extremely delighted by the thousands of entries received for this promotion as it is obvious that Hawaii homeowners not only realize the benefits of having a photovoltaic system or using a bike instead of a vehicle when possible, but RevoluSun’s reputation for being a leader in residential installations as well.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1550n2

NEWS OF THE WEIRD BY CHUCK SHEPARD
LAZINESS SAVES!
Dr. Oliver Di Pietro of Bay Harbor Islands, Fla., is a leading prescriber of the “K-E diet” that offers desperate people drastic shortterm weight loss by threading a feeding tube through the nose to the stomach and dripping in a protein-fat solution, as clients’ only “meals,” for 10 straight days. “Within a few hours,” Dr. Di Pietro told ABC’s Good Morning America in April, “your hunger and appetite go away completely.” Fat is burned through “ketosis,” he said, and a loss of 10 to 20 pounds in 10 days is possible. Such shortterm loss might be important, for example, for a woman prepping for her wedding day. One client said she doesn’t have “all of the time on the planet” just to exercise, “so I came to the doctor.”
GOVERNMENT INACTION!
The late Pennsylvania Congressman John Murtha was a Capitol Hill powerhouse, and among his legacies is the federally funded airport in his district that largely served him and the local companies heading to Washington, D.C., to lobby for government contracts. (By contrast, the Pittsburgh airport is nearly 60 miles away.) Murtha died in 2010, but the airport (which cost $150 million in earmarked funds to build, upgrade and maintain) still, according to an April Yahoo News dispatch, handles just three flights a day, all from Washington, D.C., and about $100 of every passenger’s ticket is subsidized by the federal government.
GOVERNMENT IN ACTION!
Officials in Burnsville, Minn., have brought the full force of the law to bear upon Mitch Faber (who was arrested, forced to pay a high bail, and released under electronic monitoring and only on condition of drug testing), whom they have charged with the crime of not putting proper siding on his house. According to a March report on KSTP-TV, Faber said he started re-siding, but when the economy turned bad in 2008, he stopped, assuming that the worst he could eventually suffer would be a fine.
GREAT ARCHITECTURE!
There are big plans in the city of Chiang Rai, Thailand, for a massive Buddhist temple that priests aim to make one of the most beautiful structures in the world, and have entrusted artist Chalermchai Kositpipat to design it in all-white with glittering glass and arrangements of “rich symbolism derived from Buddhist and Hindu traditions.” If Kositpipat has his way, according to an April Huffington Post dispatch, the temple will also have images of Superman, Batman and (from the movie The Matrix) Neo–all of which, Kositpipat said, further Lord Buddha’s “message.”
BEST RESTROOM EVER!
Architect Sou Fujimoto recently unveiled his public restroom (for women only, though) whose one transparency-enclosed toilet sits in a 2,160-square-foot private garden of cherry, plum and peach trees. The 6-foot-highwalled park is located beside a railway station in Ichihara City, east of Tokyo. Japan is a world leader in fanciful toilets, and Fujimoto said he thought the scenery would enhance the user’s “feeling of release.”
THE ARISTOCRAT!
Kelly Ervin, 48, was arrested in Salisbury, Md., in April and charged with littering “under 100 pounds.” According to police, Ervin routinely goes for a run every morning at 4 o’clock, and just as routinely, has a bowel movement after about two miles. Most days, that puts him in a certain neighborhood, whose residents have been complaining. When questioned, according to a Salisbury Daily Times reporter, Ervin basically shrugged and said he thought many distance runners do the same thing.

Convicted embezzler Antoinette Galluzzo, who admitted stealing more than $50,000 from a city youth agency in Englewood, N.J., was ordered in April to pay “restitution,” but the amount Judge Eugene Austin settled on was $10 a month–and only during the period of probation (three years). On the other hand, in federal court in New York City in April, Kerry Haggard, 47, was sent to prison for 6 1/2 years on one count of selling fake movie lobby posters.
LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS!
Eric King, 21, was leaving a store in Eagan, Minn., in February when a police officer in the parking lot noticed his pronounced waddle. King was arrested when the officer found a shoplifted 19-inch television set down his pants. And in March, a 34-year-old Lithuanian-born man led police in Wiltshire, England, in a nighttime foot chase after he had aroused their suspicion. Thermal imaging equipment was used from a helicopter to spot the man in the darkness. He was arrested “hiding” face-down in a manure pit. Though he originally fled, there was little evidence against him, and he was released.

PSYCHO REAL ESTATE SCHEME!
Thomas Parkin inherited real estate from his elderly mother before she died, but quickly lost it in a risky business venture. To get the deed back, according to New York City prosecutors, he concocted a scheme to pretend that Mom was still alive (it would actually be Thomas in a dress) and still owned the land (and thus that the current deedholder was a fraud). Lawyers arranged a meeting with “Mother” (conducted in a darkened room because of Mom’s “recent cataract surgery”), at which she mostly remained silent. Parkin improbably stayed in character, according to a trial dispatch on the Daily Beast, and jurors apparently kept straight faces as Parkin testified that recent “communications” between him and his mother were “mostly one-sided.” In May, Parkin was convicted on 11 counts, and at press time, he was awaiting sentencing. ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1550n3

hen Rachel Deboer pulls out her completely undecipherable calendar, with curly-sued scribbles that cover every square inch of space on the page, I can’t help but giggle. “Don’t laugh at me,” she says meekly. “You can’t judge me by this.” Then she promptly finds an opening for a Monday noon lunch appointment and pencils me in, using her special brand of hieroglyphics. She soon proved to me that her chaotic calendar is just a front. Deboer is a businesswomen, painter, theater producer, under-

ground movement supporter, feminist, social commentator, actor, performance artist and mad scientist all wrapped up like a dynamo, spinning and working constantly. What’s more, she somehow showed up on time to our meeting while I was hopelessly late. In the bright studio light at Akaku, The Ultraviolets–Deboer’s performance group– is preening with day-glo body paints, neon clothes and brightly colored props. At first glance, the costumes are garish and the painting imprecise. But when the studio goes dark, things come into perspective. It’s fitting for a group that aims to be part burlesque,
part comedy and part social change. It’s also a large group with 13 members: Bryan Axtell, Adelle Lennox, Melissa Bruck, Jessica Friedberg, Trianna Crego, Manya Reinier, Jolie Strickland, Chelleigh Hoots, Chandra Krown, Nastassia Weit, Susanna Walczak-Pol, Christaline Wallace and Deboer herself. “When the lights go down and the black light goes on, that is when the magic happens,” says Deboer. “I really like to make a lot of bridges and connections. Under the blacklight you can’t tell skin color. Every one is the same skin color. You can explore cultural themes without having a skin color in it.”
By Jen Russo Deboer started body painting 14 years ago, and continues to develop the underground art form. In 2008, Deboer attended the World Bodypainting Festival and took third place in semi-pro world body painting. This July, the Ultraviolets will be one of just 15 groups invited to Austria to compete in the 15th Annual World Bodypainting Festival’s “World Flouro Awards.” There Deboer and her Next Level Theatre group (consisting of Melissa B. and Adelle BodyPaintGirl) will tell a story of color, dance and music on stage with fluorescent body paint in blacklight. Deboer will compete in the World
Facepainting category as well. The Europeans are ahead of the US when it comes to developing body painting as an art. The festival in Austria attracts thousands to the Bodypaint City, created during the seven-day event. Body painting is high art in the rest of the world as well. People have been painting themselves in ritual, dance and fashion for centuries. “Somebody That I Used to Know,” the recent number one hit by Australia’s recording artist Gotye, shows Wouter “Wally” De BackerWouter getting painted head to toe. Deboer definitely considers herself the underdog in the competition. But she looks forward to getting a crash course and then bringing her new knowledge back to Maui. Deboer says she’s completely committed to nourishing and authenticating the underground art scene on the island.
to be part of the creation of the performance, and as director Deboer encourages their suggestions and contributions and helps them turn ideas into theater. She says she believes women are warriors of the heart. Her own burlesque show has guided her to her own self awareness about sexuality and relationships, and she talks openly about her romances on the island and how that has shaped her art. “There is a disconnect between men and women, but through comedy and theater we can break through that,” she says. “We are putting ourselves out there in a sexually funny way. You can’t worry about being judged in life, that is where you run into trouble. You have to be yourself.”
D
eboer first began developing her black light theater concept about five years ago. She called her production company Next Level Theatre. Her first production was “Birth of Tiki,” which she performed at the Source Interactive Festival in 2010. It explored Hawaiian cultural myths of creation. Next was the “E Na Aumakua,” which she performed for children and adults at the Celebration of the Arts held at the Ritz Carlton in April 2011. Deboer studied Hawaiian culture and history under a Kumu and absorbed all the stories elders would share to create her black light theater for all ages. “I started with children’s theater,” she says. “I always want to do Hawaiian mythological theatre with black light for children. I wanted to give back to the island, that was my inspiration for creating the shows, my contribution. The style is a complete dichotomy from what I do with the Ultraviolets. It’s no coincidence the black light theatre really took off after I did the children’s Hawaiian mythological theatre.” Clifford Nae‘ole, the Cultural Adviser at the RitzCarlton Kapalua, described the “E Na Aumakua” show as both avant garde and culturally significant. When the show went on, the crowd oohed and aaaahed at the glowing swimming sharks and turtles, while the live chanting and screenplay set the gripping storytelling scenes in place. Under Deboer’s direction and production, The Ultraviolets take fluorescent theater in a completely unique direction by poking humorous fun at human relationships with something like peep show therapy. Deboer, who has 27 years in theater, a Bachelor of Arts in drama from the University of Florida, previous work in the Dream Theatre in LA and 11 years on Maui, wants to make her lasting impression on the island with silly, sexy, mind-bending black light burlesque. “I really do want to change the world through art and comedy and sexy laughter and sexy goodness,” she says. “It’s my way of empowering women to be sexy by being funny. We are making light of relationships and the battle of the sexes. We are showcasing women by taking off our clothes but the underlying story line is evolutionary. I’m creating social commentary on how the brain works. Sex is the filter.” With black light on and the lights off, the Ultraviolets come to life as they work the camera for our cover shoot. Hips adulating, legs up, lips open and masks on. Think of Deboer as a mad scientist who creates fembots that gives us a taste of the show. Each castmember gets involved, from making props and their costumes to collaboration of situational skits based on various relationship experiences. They joke about how much of their show comes from Ace Hardware. Each girl or guy gets

he Ultraviolets will come alive at the Iao Theatre this Friday, June 1 during the Blacklight Venetian Masquerade Ball at the close of First Friday in Wailuku (doors open at 8:30pm). Paul Gotel of DivaDeva is co producing the event with Next Level Theatre, and spinning till the wee hours. Rachel G will open the show with a body art display, and following the Ultraviolets will be a Fashion Show by Jenny Jenson’s Island Nouveaux. The show runs on the same night as other underground artists create a surreal scene at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center’s ArT=MiXX. The underground arts on Maui is heavy on interactive art, music, visual design, fashion, food, costume, DJs, music and theatrics. It will be in full effect under the stars at the MACC, where Deboer’s colleagues will create a parallel universe of adventurous music, fashion, food and fun. “I couldn’t wait to tell my friend Trevor [Arnholt] about this show, and it turns out he will be doing a show at the MACC
that same night,” says Deboer. “The amazing thing is we are all proving this doesn’t have to develop in big cities. It’s happening here. There are so many different types of theater, taking cues from events like Burning Man, creating fringe theater, doing things with the 20-something club folks. We are celebrating it all. I’m encouraging people to do both events: ArT=MiXX starts at 7pm.” The opening of the Systemic Abstraction art show by S. A. Jones at the MACC’s Shaeffer Gallery kicks off ArT=MiXX, where 12 projection screens will flicker to life as the sun goes down. You can paint in light on the Maui Makers digital graffiti wall, or experience Gabriel Mott’s Colorbox first hand. ott’s interactive art exhibit has four projectors using a hacked XBox Kinect. Colors and shapes will throb and react on four screens as you move inside the box. The Colorbox gets its turn with Azuray Swimwear bikini models later where it becomes part of the fashion show. “This is a first,” says Mott. “The Colorbox has always been a freestyle experience inviting anyone inside to create the projections. I’m thrilled by the challenge of creating a set piece that still embraces live interactivity.” A massive projection screen (22 feet across) showing “Splitface Motherboard,” a work by Trevor Arnholt, will also be on display. This will be followed by a live VJ set from Randy Mills and a collaborative projection dance piece by Doug Deboer (Rachel’s ex-husband–Rachel says they’re still good friends) and Jessica Dungans that creates light and color out of organic oils and waters and dyes. “We’re creating an interactive video playground,” says Arnholt, the event producer. “The experience is visually stimulating, very contemporary, very cutting edge. This is an art experience you’re not going to experience many places on the island, let alone Hawaii. And it’s free!” All the artists brought their creativity to February’s Source Interactive Festival, where part of the underground art scene incubates around a three-day camp at the YMCA’s Camp Keanae. Hundreds of participants brave the muddy grounds in costumes, expanding their own comprehension of art, theatrics and music through interpretation of other campers. Event attendees create their own mini-culture environments. Everybody does some kind of art, capturing creativity and exchanging it on higher levels. At Source, Rachel Deboer’s Circus Tent was a hub of arresting activity, bands, DJs, catapulting items (literally, there was a full-size catapult that kept flinging things in front of the circus tent), as well as her signature theatrics, body paint and costume. But now, Deboer is packing up her circus tent to head to Austria with members Melissa Bruck and Adelle Lennox while still surging with electric current for her upcoming show at the Iao Theatre. The show is critical to her, not the least for bringing in funds to pay for her Austria trip. Deboer also has an ongoing fundraiser (indiegogo.com/austria2012) where you can donate to the team’s mission to get to Austria and get some perks in return. “Everyone loves the backlight, it’s so simple and fun,” says Deboer. “I want people to come to the Ultraviolets show and come away thinking about women and sex differently. More empowered and more relaxed in whatever interpretation you can make for your own life.” ■

Whole New Burger
Sure Thing Burger in Lahaina gets all the details right BY JEN RUSSO
Sure Thing Burger is a 180-degree change. There, Citrin says he’s not attempting a gourmet burger so much as rewriting the fast food handbook. Sure Thing is strictly a burger joint, with a menu consisting of four burgers (Maui Cattle Company beef, ground free-range turkey, ground organic pork and veggie), hand-made sauces to accompany each burger, extras like fried eggs and bacon, fries and canned drinks. But their simplicity is their success–each burger is handpatted and seasoned. They buy whole turkeys, then debone and grind the Owner Scott Pickard & meat there. They do the same Chef De Cuisine Josh Blain with pork shoulders and butts, and the veggie burger borrows from a particular vegetarian dish at Melisse by using a house-made lentil bean and brown rice grain patty. The details mean every bite counts. PAU HANA BY JEN RUSSO
Do what the Irish do
Dog and Duck 1913 S. Kihei Rd. 808-875-9669
DESCRIPTION: This self proclaimed Jaeger bar hosts a jolly good mix of manly boys and boyish men with a bevy of cheeky ladies serving up tap beers and chilled shots. They took the traditions of the classic Irish pub and dropped it in a hot (literally) and sexy package in the heart of Kihei Kalama Village. Decor is quaint, curtains on the paned windows, football (soccer) on the tele, wood furniture and cozy atmosphere. Live entertainment and a bang up vibe get this pub pumping.
ABOUT THE STINKY PINKY...: They could've named the place Stinky Pinky but it just didn’t have the same appeal. As the story goes, the bar owners used to get a lot of laughs drinking pau hanas in the backyard watching the pets: a duck stealing food from the pit bull and the pit bull chasing the duck. It was all in good fun, plus it sounded like a damn good pub name.
Cosmo and other cocktails. Wines are just the basics.
HAPPY HOUR FOOD SPECIALS: Free popcorn! The pupu menu is also pretty reasonable, and full of delightful bar treats–buffalo wings, mozzarella sticks, poppers, pigs in a blanket or veggie platter. From 10pm to 1am they are all just $7. And Chef Simon does a daily special (check the board). His cooking is incredible, from the famous corned beef and cabbage and grilled salmon to the shepherd's pie. All are under $13. Soups, salads, burgers and sandwiches are under $10.
BONUS: A cute little blonde school teacher named Laura leads Quiz Night on Thursdays. Don’t let her sweet demeanor fool you, she’s a whipper snapper. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso

MONDAY, JUNE 4 BASKETBALL MAUI SUMMER CAMP – Here’s a chance for boys and girls (age 7-18) all over the island to learn basketball skills from actual NBA players. It’s made possible by the nonprofit Basketball Maui, in conjunction with NBC Camps. There aren’t many opportunities like this in life for kids, so if they can take part, get them in! Later, on June 9, the NBA players will square off against local celebs (like Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa and former Hawaii Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona) in the Night of Shooting Stars. 8am-4pm. Lahaina Civic Center (1840 Honoapiilani Hwy, Lahaina); 800-406-3926; basketballmaui.com
BLUE LAGOON OPEN MIC NIGHT – Have you ever sipped the cotton candy cocktail at Blue Lagoon in Lahaina? Pheobe Tu and her crew make some mean tropical drinks there, and the basement level waterfall and koi ponds are just at the right level of kitsch. Who can say no to that? So bring your guitar and have fun entertaining the rest of the patrons. Or, if your talent is questionable, just stick with the drinks. Either way, it’s a lot of fun. No cover. 10pm-close. TUESDAY, JUNE 5 EAT PIZZA FOR BREAST CANCER – Marie DeJournette has spent much of the last five years climbing mountains in an effort to raise money to fight breast cancer. While there’s great symbolism in this action, there’s also great results: so far, she’s brought in $60,000. This July, she hopes to climb throughout the Tibetan plateau. But before then, she’ll host a benefit evening at Flatbread, which will donate a portion of all pizza sales that night to breast cancer research. Roger McKinley and friends will provide live music, and a Jimmy Lewis surfboard will get auctioned off, along with items or services from Mana Foods, personal trainer Tree Baca, Deep Relief Maui, Upcountry Fitness, North Shore Chiropractic and Massage, Dr. Bennet’s Med Spa and Shelton’s Auto Masters. 5pm-10pm, Flatbread (89 Hana Highway, Paia); prevention.breastcancerfund.org/goto/marie
TOM CONWAY – True story: When current MauiTime Editor Anthony Pignataro flew back to Maui nearly a year ago, Eh Brah cartoonist Ron Pitts picked him up at the airport, took him first to Costco for a few necessities and then home to drop off his stuff before finally taking him to Stella Blues in Kihei to hear Tom Conway sing and play the guitar. Thanks to Conway’s musical skills, Pignataro was back in the island frame of mind in no time at all. Conway may be from Michigan, but his easy-listening jazz guitar is all Maui. Free. 4-6pm. Stella Blues (1279 S. Kihei Rd.); 808-874-3779; Tomconwayguitar.com
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6 IRL – Don’t know what IRL means? Here’s a chance to kill your digital stutter by attending monthly group meetings with both veteran social media users and newbies. Anuhea plays Stella Blues in Kihei June 1-2
S
Truly an island girl at heart (her first job was at The Pet Shop at Maui Mall and she’s obsessed with spam musubi), Anuhea has been steadily gaining national attention. She’s performed with Al Green, Jack Johnson, Pepper, Bruno Mars and Ziggy Marley. In 2009 and 2010, she was invited to perform at the SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas, and is currently on tour across the mainland co-headlining with Mishka, international Roots-Reggae star. On tour she’s promoting her second album, For Love, which she released this past Valentine’s Day. Anuhea’s taking a quick break from touring on the mainland to play at Stella Blues two nights in a row, before heading for the Pacific Northwest. Come out and enjoy a fourcourse dinner while taking in a performance by Hawaii’s rising star. $30 for show, $60 for show+four-course dinner. June 1-2, shows at 6:15pm and 9:15pm. Stella Blues (1279 S. Kihei Rd.); 808-874-3779; stellablues.com. We also asked Anuhea a few questions about her music and what she’s been up to lately:
MauiTime: Your style of music is influenced by a lot of different genres, from Reggae to pop. Is there a genre that you haven’t really tried but are interested in getting into? Anuhea: I’d love to put out an album or even a mini album of Hawaiian music. I’d love to

ometimes called the “next Jack Johnson” because of her island origins, rising commercial success and breezy jams, Anuhea returns to Maui this summer for just two nights of music at Stella Blues in Kihei. Though Johnson is her preeminent musical inspiration, Anuhea doesn’t like being compared to anyone. She takes pride in the uniqueness of her sound, which is a blend of acoustic soul, reggae, pop, jazz, R&B and rap. She writes the lyrics to all of her songs, taught herself how to play guitar and says her sassy, soulful voice is completely untrained. Anuhea’s success is a product of her determination, passion and social media savvy. She was first discovered by a manager/ record-label co-owner via a demo CD on her Myspace page. She continues to build her fan base on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Myspace, interacting with her fans on the web for hours every day. Once she decided to pursue a career in music, Anuhea went after gigs in coffee shops and restaurants, which led her to local fame. In 2010, she won two Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, one for Contemporary Album of the Year and the other for Most Promising Artist.

write some of my own then sing some of my favorite covers. MT: Who’s your biggest musical inspiration? Anuhea: Jack Johnson will remain my number one musical inspiration. His music inspired me to pick up a guitar back in high school. MT: What’s your favorite concert that you’ve attended? Anuhea: India Arie at the Fillmore in San Francisco. Legendary! MT: You’ve played with some great artists and at some awesome venues. What’s your favorite performance memory? Anuhea: Singing “Three Little Birds” with Jack Johnson, Ziggy Marley, Taj Mahal, Jake Shimabukuro and Paula Fuga at Kokua Festival 2010. MT: Do you prefer playing shows in the islands or on the Mainland? Anuhea: Being in Hawaii and playing for locals is awesome. Being on the Mainland and realizing my music is spreading is a great feeling, too. I prefer playing anywhere and everywhere! MT: Your second album, For Love, came out earlier this year. How would you say your sound has changed since your first album? Anuhea: I feel I’ve embraced my Reggae inspirations more on this album. Chose to go for more acoustic guitar-oriented song-writing, less production and more rapping! MT: You’ve been on the Love and Roots Tour on the mainland this summer. Have you started thinking about your next album, or are you focusing on performing for the time being? Anuhea: I’m always thinking about what’s next, but I’m not in a rush to release a full album anytime soon. I’ll release another single or two before the year’s end, but I’m stoked on For Love and am going to perform and promote it as long as I can. MT: What is the most played song on your iTunes right now? Anuhea: Country Strong soundtrack for some reason! Love that movie... MT: You’ve gained national attention as an artist and turned the spotlight on Hawaii. What do you see for the future of the Hawaiian music scene? Anuhea: I hope the Hawaiian music scene is recognized for its individuality, not just as World Music or Reggae. Even some awards locally and nationally don’t reflect the reality of the full Hawaii music scene. Hawaiian music and the sounds of the traditional Hawaiian language and the classic instrumentation needs to be recognized but also the island/ reggae rhythms of the Hawaii bands. It’s really a unique thing we got going and people around the world love it. MT: What advice do you have for Hawaiian musicians trying to make it big? Anuhea: Keep on keeping on! Market yourself professionally and have a real slick presence online, like Facebook, websites etc. and keep practicing and writing. Be true to Hawaii and who you are. Don’t try to be anything but yourself! Lucky for us, the world loves Hawaii, so we already got a shoe-in! ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1550p2

Too Eager To Please Men in Black 3 is no Men in Black Men in Black 3 ★★★★★
BY BARRY WURST II
Rated PG13/106 Min.
A
fter extraterrestrial “Boris the Animal” escapes from an intergalactic prison, he heads back to earth to punish the MIB who put him there: Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones), who is still battling rogue alien scum with his ever-chatty partner Agent J (Will Smith). Boris (played by Flight of the Conchords Jemaine Clement) has a unique plan for revenge: by heading back to 1969 and killing a Young Agent K (played by Josh Brolin), he could wipe out his greatest enemy and oversee a world takeover in the present. Here’s all you need to know about Men in Black 3: there’s no Will Smith rap during the end credits. No, the honor has been passed onto Pitbull, whose “Back in Time” is the worst song written for a movie since Kanye West’s wretched Mission: Impossible III closer. It’s just one of many failed touches
to reignite a dusty franchise. For a movie so eager to please, you’d think they’d at least give us a reprise of Smith’s hugely popular 1997 single from the first movie. The first signs that the movie doesn’t work come in the first half, which, with its jokes about Viagra and super models, feels like it’s stuck in 1997. Smith and Jones no longer crackle as an on screen team–their timing is off and the prickly annoyance between the two of them no longer seems manufactured. Jones’ past work as an actor is impressive and extensive but he’s visibly unhappy to be here. Smith’s dialogue acts as audience commentary: he states “I’m getting too old for this” and he’s right. Later, after a shoot out in a Chinese restaurant with cringe worthy Asian stereotypes, he says “that was mean,” and he’s right. The filmmakers seem to realize how out of sync Jones is, so they’ve replaced him for most of the movie with Brolin, who gives a winning turn though his deadpan, feature-length Jones impression is a limited performance for such a gifted actor. Like a wedding MC pushing too hard to work the room, Smith tries hard to compensate for the lackluster material, Alice Eve
A collection of missed opportunities is wasted as a potential love interest for Brolin, and Clement and Emma Thompson (playing the new MIB head) sadly embarrass themselves. There are moments that work, like the clever, thrilling visualization of how the film’s version of time travel works, the only scene that justifies the 3D upgrade. There’s also a funny gag involving Andy Warhol, though it will be puzzling to those who don’t know about The Factory. Even though they feel rushed, a few energetic shoot-outs and chases liven things up when the screenplay periodically stops working. From the very beginning, we’re informed that the story is building to a big twist and, once we get there, the final reveal is quite sentimental but, the more you think about it and how we met Agent J and K in the first film, it doesn’t make any sense.
At the screenplay level, nothing comes together and a great fortune was misspent on sets, make-up, costumes, and special effects that appear on screen for less than a minute. All the 1969 portion has to offer are lame jokes that Agent J will encounter racial discrimination; it’s as funny here as it was in Wild Wild West, Smith’s worst movie, which was made by the same director, Barry Sonnenfeld (who still hasn’t made a film as good as Get Shorty). This corny, tired sequel offers a few ambitious ideas but is otherwise a collection of missed opportunities. The thrill is gone, but anyone who saw Men in Black II already knew that. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1550f

THE FIVE YEAR ENGAGEMENT - R Romance - Isn’t it nice when a movie’s title really sums the whole thing up? Starring Jason Segel and Emily Blunt. 124 min. ■

HOROSCOPE
Sign Language BY CAERIEL CRESTIN GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Different things have different learning curves. Some activities, like oil painting or martial arts, have lengthy, slow curves, requiring practice and persistence. You might be able to punch through a sheet of paper on your first day, but putting your fist through a 2x4 is going to take a long while to work up to. On the other hand, there are useful skills—such as riding a bike, or cooking a nice meal—that you can absolutely learn in a few hours. Recognize which kind of activity you’re beginning now, and adjust your patience accordingly; your happiness depends on it. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) You’re allowed to fall in love, you know. Sometimes, when you’re on the verge, you just sort of fearfully hover, noncommittally. You get bashful about adoration the way some people get pee-shy in public restrooms. Luckily, the latest object of your adulation enjoys worship—in small doses, anyway. It’s an ideal situation for you to overcome your inhibitions about being swooningly, obnoxiously in love. I expect the average romantic temperature of your life to rise by at least a couple degrees this month, and for some days to reach highs you didn’t know you could stand. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) This week you might feel like you’re slipping backwards down a steep, endless, twisting slide. Instead of grappling desperately at the sides, or vainly trying to brace your feet, why not accept your fate? Who’s to say that what lies at the bottom is worse than what you left at the top? Remember the last time you were booted from your boyfriend’s apartment or fired from a job? Lucky you—something wonderfully fabulous usually happens before you hit the sidewalk. Since there’s no stopping you in your brilliant tumble to the next chapter, is there any way you can just relax and enjoy the euphoric thrill of the ride? VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) When you cast your nets this wide, you’re bound to catch more fish than you need. Some weeks (like this one), you can’t throw them back fast enough. You’ll have wide-eyed victims of your charms flopping around in front of you, gasping for breath. You might consider converting to line fishing for a month or so, since your hook is so well baited. If not, at least reduce the amount of netting you have trawling through the sea. Otherwise, you might be so busy returning rejects to the ocean that the big, juicy fish you intended to keep might slip away before you have a chance to enjoy them. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Tonight, don your cloak of invisibility and go out. Revel in all the lovely things you can see, and juicy secrets you can uncover, when you’re trying very hard to not be noticed (for a change). Later this week, pretend you have laryngitis and can only speak when absolutely necessary. Turn yourself inside out if you can, transform your extroversion to introversion. All of this is required if you are to rediscover the humanity and kindness you’ve been missing and which your cynicism has almost killed. See you next week (but not this one), wallflower. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Imagine yourself hiking along the lip of a seething, only barely dormant volcano. The deep crater yawns next to you, a gurgling throat of barely restrained lava threatening destruction at any time. The Hawaiian volcano goddess is called Pele. Regardless of what you call yours, s/he’s someone you’d rather be an ally than an enemy—trust me. It’s all or nothing with this one. Make every proper sacrifice, offering and prayer to garner their protection and aid, and possibly adoration and affection. Don’t know what’s required? Just ask. She’s in just the right mood to tell you.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) You don’t have many allies this week, but then again, you don’t need them. Just think of yourself as the one who got left behind when the rest of the Avengers went off to fight their arch-nemesis on the other side of the planet. You’re left to pursue your own solo adventure, saving the world while your team discovers that the threat they went to combat was actually just a ruse, a distraction from the real danger. This time you get to save everyone on your own, with no one else even trying to hog the credit. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Make do. You’ve heard the adage, “Necessity is the mother of invention.” A sieve will serve as well as a colander. A paring knife will do when you can’t find your scissors. Replacing objects is easy, especially for someone as frugal, resourceful and practical as you. But what about coming up with vivid compensation for the absent emotional or mental stimulus you’ve been craving? Television and the Internet pale in comparison to real, live, warm human beings who care about you. The good news: there are more of them than you think, standing by to step in and fill the gap. All you need to do is ask. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Frivolous extravagance isn’t really your style, particularly when it comes to romance. Buying bouquets of roses or writing sappy love letters just feels cheesy. You just have different priorities; you’d rather save your money for an adventure for two in some wonderfully exotic location. However, since your rare grand gestures and frequent subtle ones can unfortunately be eclipsed by the ferociously romantic images that surround us in movies and on bad TV shows, it might behoove you to go pick some wildflowers or compose a haiku of adoration once in a while. Try that this week. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) A nature hike has me marveling; the pond teems with tiny fish, the air buzzes with countless drowsy crickets, and frogs leap away from my giant, clumsy feet. Yellow flowers nod their crumpled faces like agreeable old people. Dogs bark in the distance. A dragonfly zips by in a magenta streak. Feel like your life is slightly dead, or empty? Go forth, zombie, and actually take note of what’s around you. There’s marvelous life in the cracks of the concrete sidewalk, in the smiling face of that woman on the street corner, in the fleas on her dog, even inside you. Slow down and find it. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Flaunt your horns. One of the elements of a successful seduction is danger, mystery, adventure. For example, let us examine two of the sexiest signs: Scorpio and Pisces. For those fast folk who flit capriciously to be consumed by Scorp like moths immolated in a flame, it’s that possible sting that inexorably attracts. Or those who drift helplessly into Pisces’ hypnotic grasp can feel the potential of drowning in his or her cloudy emotional depths. So start showing off those fierce horns, baby. Sure, it’ll scare some folks away. But you’re hardly a suitable match for the weak of heart anyway, now are you? TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Although you can be as contagious and inconvenient as poison ivy at times, you’ve kept an exceptionally low profile lately. Lurking like a toadstool among daisies, you’ve been taking notes and spreading spore. Pretty soon, though, you’ll bloom. Go to bed happy. In the morning you’ll awaken a beautiful butterfly. Displaying your beauty and appeal will attract your share of predators and sheep, though, so you’d better hide poison darts in your nectar-sipping proboscis, or switchblades behind your petals—some way of keeping those worshippers in line.
