Talk of the Island
BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO
NATIVE HAWAIIAN JUSTICE? On June 8, Hawaii Public Radio‘s Wayne Yoshioka filed a great story on a thoroughly lousy subject: the Native Hawaiian Justice Commission’s two-day summit this week on the question of why Native Hawaiians make up “less than a quarter” of the state’s population but “more than 40 percent” of those incarcerated in our prisons (including those on the Mainland contracted to hold Hawaii inmates). This is not even close to being a new subject. In 2010, the state’s Office of Hawaiian Affairs (OHA) published a report exploring why Native Hawaiians were so thoroughly overrepresented in the criminal justice system. It concluded that the matter was so bad it was destroying Native Hawaiian society: “It is clear that when a Native Hawaiian person enters the criminal justice system, they serve more time in prison and more time on probation than other racial or ethnic groups,” states the OHA report. “Native Hawaiians are also likely to have their parole revoked and be returned to prison compared to other racial or ethnic groups. Coupled with the experiences of pa‘ahao included in the pages of this report, it is clear that Native Hawaiians are caught in a cycle of imprisonment that is perpetuated across generations.” Three years before the OHA report, Greg Mebel looked at the reasons for the disparate treatment in his Jan. 4, 2001 MauiTime cover story “Hawaiian Justice.” He found a diverse list of factors, including poverty, the high cost of living, discrimination and Hawaii’s own colonial past. In fact, Mebel found that Native Hawaiians are getting knocked about in just about everything society has to offer: “At this point, Native Hawaiians own most of the top misery indices in Hawaii,” Mebel wrote. “These include high percentages in prison, high infant mortality, high rates of illness, low educational attainment, low income-level, high unemployment and
high rates of drug addiction and alcoholism. They’re not even adequately represented in competitive surfing—a sport Native Hawaiians invented: ‘When 29-year-old Maikalani Kaiolohia Robb (a.k.a. Kalani Robb) and 36-year-old Vincent Sennen Garcia (a.k.a. Sunny Garcia) retired from the World Championship Tour last year, they became the last Native Hawaiians to compete on the coveted World Championship Tour,’ reported a recent issue of Free Surf Magazine.” According to Yoshioka’s report, commission chairman Michael Broderick (a former judge) outlined virtually all the same issues, which isn’t surprising, considering how long groups have been discussing the issue around Hawaii. This fact wasn’t lost on Home for too many Kauai County Councilmember Native Hawaiians? Mel Rapozo, who told Yoshioka who had some pretty scathing things to say about the nearly endless discussion of this issue: “I was on the state’s anti-drug committee,” he said, according to the HPR report. “I was on the county’s anti-drug committee. I quit both of ‘em because it was the same old nonsense: talking, talking, talking, talking, talking. But where’s the money? It costs federal money, state money and county money. But that is one of the biggest problems that we have, and it’s one of the biggest excuses that I think we use. Oh, the economy, well, the economy hasn’t always been bad. We never did anything when the economy was good. So let’s get real.” I couldn’t locate a website for the Native Hawaiian Justice Commission, even though it was set up last year, which doesn’t bode well for the commission’s ability to reach Hawaii’s residents. I did find a PDF of the commission’s Feb. 7, 2012 hearing minutes, which lists the following nine members: • Paul Perrone, Chief of Research & Statistics, Department of the Attorney General • Jack Tonaki, Public Defender
Overheard
• Honorable Richard K. Perkins, 1st Circuit Court Judge • Joe Booker, Deputy Director, Public Safety • Dr. Kamana`opono Crabbe, Office of Hawaiian Affairs • Cheryl Marlow, Adult Client Services Branch Administrator • Michael F. Broderick, Chairman (President, CEO YMCA of Honolulu) (Public member) • RaeDeen Karasuda, Senior Research Associate, Kamehameha Schools (Criminologist member) • Jeff Kent, OHA Public Policy Advocate III Anyone want to wager on whether the commission’s work actually leads to some kind of tangible reform? Anyone at all?
CONGRATULATIONS TO US! And now I’m going to pat myself on the back for a job very well done. That job was for doing very little editing to former MauiTime Associate Editor Anu Yagi (who stepped down last month to pursue new challenges). See, last week her now-discontinued column Kula Kid won this paper its very first Editorial Award from the Association of Alternative Newsmedia (AAN). As longtime readers of MauiTime know very well, Anu is an exceptional writer, and her Kula Kid column was always thoughtful, literate, funny and a joy to read. That was due entirely her to skills–I never had to do more than tweak her work, which in my 16 years as a reporter and editor is a rare thing. Having the national trade organization for alt weeklies like MauiTime recognize those skills and award Anu a very prestigious First Prize award (in the papers-thatcirculate-less-than-50,000-copies category) reflects greatly on her, and on this paper. I could not be more proud. But Anu wasn’t the only winner: former MauiTime art directors Chris Skiles and Justin “Scrappers” Morrison–along with current photographer Sean M. Hower–shared an Honorable Mention award for three covers they worked on: the Fashion Issue (Feb. 4, 2011), the Taste of Maui Issue (Sept. 1, 2011) and the Bar Guide (Oct. 20, 2011). All of their work for MauiTime was wonderful, and while recognition like this is great, it also makes us miss Anu, Chris and Justin a little bit more. ■

On January 4th, I was filming an empty wave while my driver Tide was tracking it. He took too sharp of a turn; I didn’t have straps or anything, so I went tumbling right off. I knew everyone on the cliff must have been laughing at me. We were lucky to save the camera and the footage. We have a pretty basic setup to film, and no helicopter budget, but we did our best to capture the spirit of the movement and hope to put a stamp on what’s going on out there. “We wanted to tell the true story of what is going on out there and highlight some of the less known guys who are truly committed and deserve recognition,” Hovey continued. “Guys like Marcio Freire, and the Walsh Brothers have been pioneering a new realm out there.” Hovey was born on Hawaii Island and learned to surf at “Drainpipes” in old Kalapana before Kilauea’s lava flow took it out. He moved to Maui in 1994, later graduating from Maui High. Raised by a single mother, he says she was committed to exposing him to art, drama, musicians, sculptors, writers and creative types. After high school he joined the Coast Guard, where his tour of duty included a stint in Iraq. “Being in the military allowed me to visit many places and cultures and tuned my attention for detail,” says Hovey. “Once out of the service I attended film school in Manhattan, and formed my first production company specializing in event videography. Viewers will see the conversations surfers have about facing these giant waves and their raw feelings about facing Mother Nature head to head. NEWS OF THE WEIRD BY CHUCK SHEPARD
THE COCKROACH SOCIAL NETWORK No insect is in greater need of a public relations boost than the cockroach, and Dr. Mathieu Lihoreau of Rennes, France, provided it in a recent issue of the journal Insectes Sociaux. Roaches are highly social, suffer when isolated, recognize members of their own families and appear to make “collective decisions for the greater good” of their community, according to a review of the research in May by BBC Nature. They act in “emergent forms of cooperation”–“swarm intelligence.” Functioning mostly through chemical cues, they advise their homeboys where to find food and water, where the good crawl-into cracks are for sleeping, and how to stay attached to their social networks.
THE HANGOVER MOBILE
Dr. Jason Burke rolled out his “Hangover Heaven” medical bus fleet in Las Vegas in April, offering revelers a faster, clinically proper recovery from their night of excess drinking for a $90 to $150 fee. After giving their medical history, “patients” receive intravenous saline, with B and C vitamins and whatever prescription or over-thecounter drugs are appropriate, says Burke (a licensed anesthesiologist). No drunks are served; the patient must be in the “hangover” stage. One M.D., who hosts a radio show, told CBS News, “I think many doctors are kicking themselves because they didn’t think of this first.”
NO TRADEMARK FOR YOU!
A restaurant set to open in April in West Palm Beach, Fla., named with a Japanese word suggesting “good fortune, wealth and prosperity,” was denied a trademark by the Florida Division of Corporations. The name in question: the Fuku. And in April, Alabama’s alcoholic beverage control agency rejected Founders Brewing Co.’s request to sell its Dirty Bastard beer in the state, even though Founders pointed out that the state already permits another company to sell Fat Bastard wine. The agency acknowledged the similarity, but said Fat Bastard was approved years ago and that no one at the agency now recalls why.
HELLUVA BUSINESS MODEL
In April, the Taiwan tabloid Apple Daily profiled a 27-year-old man who said he has tripled his previous salary by becoming a public snitch, turning in videos of litterers and spitters violating Taipei laws that reward informants a fee of one-fourth the amount of any fines. In the last two years, the man (“Chou”) said he has had 5,000 cases result in fines, for which he has been paid the equivalent of $50,000. He said he now teaches classes in snitching.
BELIEVE! Surely the world’s longest-running science experiment is the 85-year-old continuing project to visually ascertain whether “pitch” (a tar) is liquid. Begun at England’s Cambridge University, the project is now housed at the University of Queensland in Australia, where the custodian believes the next drop (the ninth ever) will fall in 2013. The previous teardrop-shaped bead descended in 2000.
CUTTING EDGE SCIENCE
Dung beetles are known to researchers to roll perfectly made balls with their back legs and to periodically mount the balls, pirouette and climb down to be on their way. Emily Baird of Lund University in Sweden explained why in a January issue of the journal PLoS One: The beetles are gathering celestial readings to help shepherd their balls home, away from predators. Baird’s specialty is learning how animals with tiny brains perform complex tasks, and to test the dung beetle, she patiently watched 22 of them guide their balls through an obstacle course her team created.

his is for the ass who sideswiped me as I was riding my bike one recent morning on Dairy Road in Kahului. You were leaving the parking lot next to McDonald’s with your phone in your hand (and clearly didn’t even look for people on bikes, like me) as you made your turn onto the road. You knocked me off my bike and then just kept going. I’m fortunate that the bruddah driving a van down the road was able to stop in time instead of running me over. As for you, I’d be worrying about karma right now, and whether anybody happened to see your license plate. ■
LEADING ECONOMIC INDICATORS
Only about 16 percent of stock market transactions consist of what most people think of as buying or selling of company or mutual fund shares (“real” investors, interacting with actual brokers). The rest, according to analysis by Morgan Stanley’s Quantitative and Derivative Strategies group and covering October to December 2011, were performed by computers acting automatically, at staggeringly high frequency, using software algorithms, buying or selling mindlessly, based on what trading firms needed to fill out their portfolios’ profitably on a second-by-second basis.

HEALTH REFORM
Two homeless, penniless men in Fresno, Calif., are setting a high bar for frequency, and expense, of ambulance trips to the hospital. A 41-year-old who says he has “a major problem with my liver” and a 51-year-old allegedly seizure-prone man called for a combined 1,363 trips in 2011, which at the market rate would have cost them $545,000 (apart from evaluations by the hospital, which would have additionally cost more than $500,000), according to a February investigation by the Fresno Bee. Taxpayers and the insured foot the bills (reduced somewhat because the ambulance company and the hospital take lower fees). Neither the ambulance company nor the hospital can refuse to serve the men, and attempts to talk the men out of the trips are either futile or too laborious for the emergency technicians to attempt. ■

WHERE DOES HAWAII DRAW THE LINE BETWEEN HOMICIDE AND SELF-DEFENSE?
K
ILL OR BE KILLED. IN THE JUNGLE IT’S IRONCLAD LAW; IN HUMAN SOCIETY IT’S ANYTHING BUT.
Yes, we condone killing in certain extreme cases—during war, as punishment for the most heinous crimes and, sometimes, in self defense. Even then, however, it comes wrapped in layers of practical and moral ambiguity. It’s no surprise, then, that the Trayvon Martin case continues to make headlines. As you’re surely aware, Martin, an unarmed black teenager, was shot to death earlier this year in a Florida gated community by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer. Zimmerman claims Martin was acting suspiciously and attacked him when confronted. Martin’s family insists Trayvon did nothing wrong. However the case plays out, it has exhumed some simmering, divisive issues—race, class, gun control—that always seem to be bubbling just below the surface of the American experiment, waiting for any excuse to erupt. And it has raised a fascinating, terrifying question: When is it acceptable to take another person’s life? In Hawaii, like most places, the answer isn’t always clear.
IN THE WEE HOURS OF NOV. 5, 2011, 23-year-old Kollin Elderts lay bleeding to death on the floor of a Waikiki McDonald’s. The bullet in his chest came from a gun fired by 27-year-old Christopher Deedy, an off-duty federal agent. The events leading up to the shooting remain murky. Deedy, who was charged with murder, contends that Elderts was the aggressor and that he acted in self-defense in his capacity as a law enforcement officer. But a lawsuit filed by Elderts’ family tells a different story. According to the suit, filed less than two weeks after the incident, Deedy “initiated violence” by “kicking Kollin Elderts in the chest with a martial arts maneuver.” The suit alleges that Deedy had been drinking that night. Deedy refused a blood alcohol test, according to a KITV report, while cocaine, marijuana and alcohol were found in Elderts’ system. Reaction to the case has split between those defending Deedy’s actions and those painting him as yet another overzealous, reckless cop (the shooting occurred during the APEC conference, when Oahu law enforcement were on
high alert). The fact that Deedy was a federal agent may give him more leeway, but how far can average Hawaii residents go to defend themselves? Hawaii’s self-defense law, outlined in HRS 703-304, allows for the use of deadly force, “if the actor believes that deadly force is necessary to protect himself against death, serious bodily injury, kidnapping, rape, or forcible sodomy.” Hawaii’s law does not compel a person to retreat from “his dwelling or place of work” when threatened. This is the now-infamous “stand your ground” provision—not as broad as the Florida statute currently being tested by the Trayvon Martin case, but broader than many other states. “We would not normally expect a man to abandon his home to an aggressor and would allow him to stand his ground,” reads the commentary accompanying HRS 703-304. The law, however, has limits. In April,
life free from dangers caused by the criminal element,” wrote the state Public Defender’s office in testimony submitted to the House Judiciary Committee. The prosecutor’s office, meanwhile, had serious reservations. Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Douglas Chin offered the following hypothetical: “[Suppose] a driver cuts off a car containing two large men who pull into the same parking lot as the driver. The two men exit the vehicle and approach the driver yelling at the driver for cutting them off, but the driver can safely drive away from the incident. Under the current law, since the driver can retreat in complete safety, he or she must do so before using force against the two men. If this bill were to pass and the duty to retreat was eliminated, might the driver be more inclined to use deadly force if he or she feared death or serious bodily injury?”
“A victim who is in fear of being attacked can’t be expected to wait before taking action to protect him or herself and loved ones...” a judge upheld the 20-year sentence given to Kevin Metcalfe, a Hawaii Island man convicted of shooting another man, Larry Kuahuia, with a 12-gauge shotgun in 2009. Metcalfe claimed he caught Kuahuia trying to break into his greenhouse, which was filled with marijuana plants, and that Kuahuia charged at him. But evidence contradicted Metcalfe’s account. During the trial Maui pathologist Anthony Manoukian testified that Kuahuia was shot in the back, according to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald. In 2009—the same year Kevin Metcalfe killed Larry Kuahuia—the Hawaii legislature considered a bill that would have amended HRS 703-304, lowering the threshold of threat from “serious bodily injury, kidnapping, rape, or forcible sodomy” to mere physical attack and expanding the “stand your ground” provision to include any public place. “In light of the increasing presence of violence in our society and the availability firearms and other deadly weapons, [this bill] would allow the public to become more secure in their homes, places of employment and other areas where they should be able to enjoy
In February, Chin’s scenario played out with eerie precision when 65-yearold Douglas Freeman fired two shots into the driver’s side of 23-year-old Bronson Botelho’s car on Oahu’s H-2 freeway. Bothelo says Freeman cut him off, then later shot at him. Freeman was charged with several counts, including reckless endangerment and terroristic threatening. Freeman’s lawyer, Marcus Sierra, told KHON Freeman was merely defending himself.
IS HAWAII GUN HAPPY?
According to a recent report from the state Attorney General’s office, 15,375 firearm permits were processed statewide in 2011, a 20 percent uptick compared to 2010. But overall, gun ownership in Hawaii falls well below the national average, as MauiTime noted in April after the release of the AG’s report. Still, Hawaii boasts a vocal gun lobby. The group Hawaii Concealed Carry (tagline, “protecting paradise”) fights regularly to loosen state gun laws, issuing opinion pieces with titles like “‘Aloha’ Won’t Save Your Family.” In the wake of the Trayvon Martin
shooting, the Hawaii Rifle Association posted a commentary on its Web site that accused “race baiters” of turning the case into a “media circus.” “President Obama has directed the Justice Department to investigate,” states the commentary. “It’s far, far too premature for DOJ to stick its nose into what is purely a state crime at this point—IF a crime was committed.” (The commentary goes on to describe Martin as a “6 foot 2 inch football player” while noting that Zimmerman is “5 feet 9 inches in height,” with no mention of the fact that loaded weapons tend to render size disparities moot.) That’s the same Hawaii Rifle Association whose parent organization, the NRA, advocated expanding HRS 703304 with the following testimony: “A victim who is in fear of being attacked can’t be expected to wait before taking action to protect him or herself and loved ones and ask the criminal, ‘excuse me, intruder, are you here breaking into my home to rape me, kill me, or are you just here to beat me up and steal my stuff and oh, by the way, what kind of weapon do you have?’” Bruce McEwan, chair of the state Injury Prevention Advisory Committee, had a different take. “A law that promotes the use of deadly force as the first line of defense can create any number of unintended consequences,” McEwan testified. Expansive self defense laws “may make the public feel safer,” he added, but “instead create a mentality of fear.”
TRAYVON MARTIN IS DEAD. So are Kollin Elderts and Larry Kuahuia. Whether their killings were justified is an open question; the finality of their deaths is not. When we give anyone—a jury, a soldier, a citizen—the right to take another’s life we must do so with the utmost caution. And when we codify that right into law, we must prepare for the inevitable consequences. “I hope I am not for the killing,” wrote Ernest Hemingway—who ended his own life with a shotgun blast—in For Whom The Bell Tolls. “The killing is necessary, I know, but still the doing of it is very bad for a man and I think that, after all this is over and we have won the war, there must be a penance of some kind for the cleansing of us all.” ■

Alan Wong brings East and West together at his newest restaurant BY JEN RUSSO

I
n a swift motion of edible kismet, Alan Wong’s newest restaurant Amasia has opened on Maui in the Grand Wailea. I’ve been a fan of Alan Wong ever since my friends, Jane and Bob Brown, had their remarkable anniversary dinner at his King Street Oahu restaurant and brought me his cookbook New Wave Luau. Suddenly, I was onto Alan Wong. His fresh twists on island food were more than intriguing: they are fearless leaps into fusion food, Wong’s way. Flavors, textures and visuals can be unusual, but the base of his dishes are the familiar flavors of our island culture– kalua roast pork, dashi, shiitake, li hing mui, tomato, pineapple and sweet potato. If you look up the word Amasia, you’ll
Handcrafted Cocktails and Alan Wong's Sake
The Sushi Chef's at Amasia find that it’s a future supercontinent predicted by plate tectonics, one that we won’t see in our lifetime. Alan Wong uses the name here to offer a taste of our culinary future. The space formerly known as Kincha was originally built by Takeshi Sekiguchi, developer and original owner of Grand Wailea, as his own private club to entertain VIP guests. Wong’s team kept much of the original design, tatami rooms, private dining areas and 800 tons of rocks brought in from Mount Fuji, but $3 million went into renovations, kitchen updates and bar upgrades. “The bones of Kincha remain,” Wong says. The heart of the restaurant is East meets West. Here Wong mashes up street food, home recipes, bar food, hibachi grilling and our melting pot of appetizing cultures. “Amasia is a contemporary style of eating that borrows from ethnicities all around the world,” says Wong. “You take these ethnic influences we have in our immigrant past, the sugar and pineapple plantations, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Hawaiian culinary traditions. Then I combine it with food from travels to Singapore and Peru, taking little things from here and there.”
He says his vision is to create the ultimate international izakaya. The menu is divided into hot and cold pupu, robata (the grill), family style (larger portions to share), raw, maki (rolls) and desserts. The handcrafted cocktail menu exudes the same creativity as does the wine and sake list, in which Wong says the drinks will always match the food. You will find his signature private label Alan Wong Wines on the menu, one of my favorite being the Kitchen Sink red. Wong says he blends all his wines himself to reap the benefits of creating flavor profiles specific to his foods. He was not afraid to borrow from favorites at Alan Wong’s on Oahu, like the whole tomato salad that was grown by Richard Ha on Hawaii Island. It’s a a flutter of thinly sliced cucumbers beneath a whole, juicy tomato topped with delicate sprout tops and served with tangy li hing mui vinaigrette. Serving the soup and sandwich as a rich toasty wedge balanced on top of a martini glass of soup is also swiped from King Street. Wong says items will be on the chopping block as he plays with the menu, listening closely to patrons and making way for new and seasonal items. From the raw menu, the chirashi is a spectacular deconstruction of the traditional bowl rice dish. Instead of vegetables, chunks of fish and egg meander together over a glass bench. The Surf and Turf is a seared beef-wrapped roll with shiso and uni. The Farm Roll is full of agricultural goodness. Here, raw edible art is as visually pleasing as it is indulgent–witness the Kona Kampachi with buttery kampachi, surprising corn nuts and cubes of sweet potato immersed in a lilikoi jus. When you’re first seated, the server brings a bit of ban chan and marinated olives with your drinks to get the appetite rolling Korean-style. As you peruse the menu’s mind-boggling number of dishes, you’ll vow to come back to try this or that because there’s no possible way to get to it all in one sitting. Of course, that didn’t stop me from trying. The robata grill is wood-fired, and the delicious char is perfect on fresh sweet peppers, hamakua mushrooms, jidori chicken and beef tenderloin. It’s a great way to nibble through the
menu with chopsticks. In hot pupus, you can find opulent favorites from around the world like fried oysters, bambucha potstickers, empanadas, chowder and duck bao. Dessert has to be spectacular when you have so many precedents, and it stood up exceedingly well. I fell in love with the ice cream sandwich: honey rice granite, candied peanuts and caramel popcorn okoshi ice cream but there is something for everyone. “There are a lot of memorable dishes,” says Kevin Peterson, food and beverage director at Grand Wailea. “Personally, my favorite is the whole chili garlic Dungeness crab. It explodes with flavor and it’s one of those dishes where you can’t be afraid to use your hands. The bread that accompanies it is perfect for dipping in the flavorful sauce. For dessert, a must try is “The Coconut.” It’s haupia sorbet molded into half a coconut with a chocolate shell and served with fresh fruit. It’s not just aesthetically beautiful when it’s served to you, but tastes as good as it looks.” When I ask Wong about his contacts with Maui farmers, he says he is still developing the relationships. He has spearheaded a movement early on in his other restaurants of supporting local agriculture and fostering relationships as far as Hawaii Island for quality ingredients that impact our local economy. In this realm Wong is passionate about educating the keiki and says this will be the key to balancing our local economy in the future. “Our company’s definition of sustainability is to make decisions today that our grandchildren’s grandchildren can enjoy,” says Wong, “Kids can effectively change the decision making process, they can make the change happen. Our goal is to teach the kids to buy local, have the kids think sustainable.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso

Maui Film Festival Foodie Events BY JEN RUSSO
Taste of Wailea attendees from 2011
T
he Maui Film Festival explodes over the next four days with shorts, documentaries, surf flicks, dramas, kids movies, and more in both Wailea and the Castle Theater at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center in Kahului. The festival is also famous for bringing a glut of celebrities to the island to enjoy the limelight with their awards and premiers, this year its Josh Radnor, Tim Bonyton, Mark Magidson, Ron Frike, James Marsden and Elizabeth Banks. But for me and other Maui foodies, the most remarkable things at the Film Festival are the foods and foodie events. When Celestial Cinema geared up with its grassy bowl filled with film fanatics holding BYOB bottles and screen lit picnics on blankets under the stars, we fell in love with the outdoor venue even when they ran out of popcorn or the lines got long for hot coffee. Now we have neighboring Gannon’s Restaurant catering hot entrees, salads, wraps, sandwiches, and vegetarian options. Maui Gelato is there with fresh baked croissants, pastries, iced and hot tea, coffee and snacks. The festival gets smothered in chocolate at the Four Seasons at the signature Taste of Chocolate event Friday night at 10pm after the Celestial Cinema. Four Seasons chefs put together the most decadent menu of cacao sweets that can send even the most seasoned chocolate lovers over the top. Six chocolatey tasting stations serve up souffles, waffles, ice creams, cones, cake pops and donuts. You can dunk your taste buds in cacao at the fountain with marshmallows, cake, cookies on a stick. Willy Wonka never dreamed this big. The chocolate’s powers are enhanced with strolling violinist Andrea Walls. After your chocolate hangover recovery, it’s time to step up your game. Saturday evening’s Taste of Wailea has an impossibly good looking spread waiting for you. Plenty
of beverage too: Ocean’s Vodka will be making exotic farm forward cocktails; Stella Artois, Hoegaarden and Leffe Blonde beers on draft; and a selection of wines. Last year Chef Cameron Lewark basted a whole pig on a spit in front of his restaurant’s tent, and by the end of the event, they were serving this beast. Mulligan’s always has a long line of folks clamoring for their fish & chips, but this year the Irish prove they have a trick up their sleeve: chilled watermelon gazpacho with anise crème fraiche and avocado as well as blackened ahi on Togarashi wonton with edamame and Sunomono cucumber. Dr. Nat and Emily Tavo will provide entertainment along with the striking sunset views from the David Leadbetter Private Golf Academy on the Wailea Gold & Emerald Golf Course. The event starts warm, the white table cloth seating is nearly blinding in the sun at first. As the sun goes down, and your belly gets full, the rosy glow of the sun is captivating. Since tickets include entry to the celestial cinema showing after the event, there is chair and blanket parking off to the side. The Taste of Wailea shuttle begins at 4:15pm. After the sun goes down Taste of Wailea attendees walk off a little of that satiation with a short jaunt to the Celestial Cinema. Sunday night’s late event is the Starry Night Moondance. There festival attendees can shmooze and dance the night away with the Freeradicals Projeckt. Mulligans has a tasty line up, too: signature corned beef and fish & chips and passed pupus as well as drinks by Oceans Vodka and Stella Artois. For tickets to any of these events and films see mauifilmfestival.com or call 808-579-9244.

Skimmers of all ages are invited. 8am. Makena State Park (third entrance). Call Erik Covarrubias at 808-265-2112 to register.
SATURDAY, JUNE 16 BLUE LAGOON AIRS – Maui goes Hollywood (or network television, at least), this Saturday when Lifetime Network airs Blue Lagoon: The Awakening, a remake of the 1980 movie (referred to in a County of Maui press release as a “classic,” amazingly enough). A lot of the movie was filmed at various scenic locations on Maui, including Paia, Makena and Twin Falls. More than 30 island residents were employed as crew members during filming. For those who missed the original, the movie is about two young hotties (played by Australians Brenton Thwaites and Indiana Evans) who get stranded on a tropical island, grow up together and fall in love. Lifetime, 8/7c. mylifetime.com
FOUR FATHERS, FOUR SONS – When Hawaiian slack-key masters compete, you win! This Saturday, talented father and son duos will engage in a little goodnatured competition onstage at the MACC in celebration of Father’s Day. The Hawaiian music duos will be Dennis & David Kamakahi, Richard & Kai Ho‘opi‘i, Kevin & Ikaika Brown and George & Keoki Kahumoku. Musical stylings will include Hawaiian slack-key guitar, ukulele and leo ki‘e ki‘e (falsetto). First, each pair will perform together, and then the four fathers will go head-tohead with their sons. Competition never sounded so sweet. $25 GA, $45 VIP (w/meet and greet). 7:30pm. McCoy Studio Theater, MACC (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 808-242-7469; mauiarts.org
SATURDAY, JUNE 16 BOWLING FOR THE KIDS – Hit the bowling alley this Saturday for Big Brothers Big Sisters’ 25th annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake fundraiser. This year’s theme is “Hollywood Silver Screen,” and participants will get star-studded treatment with a lunch prepared by Chef Conrad Aquino from the Sheraton Maui Resort, two games of bowling, an event T-shirt, goodie bag and chances to win prizes. If the idea of used bowling shoes makes you cringe, you can participate as an event sponsor or volunteer. Event proceeds will support Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring programs in which children facing adversity are matched with screened volunteer mentors. These programs are beneficial to the at-risk youth and improve their chances of graduating high school and avoiding juvenile delinquency. 9am-5pm. Maui Bowling Center (1976 E. Vineyard St., Wailuku); 808-242-9754; bigsofmaui.org
NA KAMEHAMEHA PARADE & HO‘OLAULE‘A – Celebrate Hawaii’s ali’i and cultural traditions with a pa‘u parade and ho’olaule’a on Front Street this Saturday. The pa‘u parade will showcase Hawaiian equestrian styling and honors the Kamehameha lineage. The ho’olaule’a will feature cultural tours and exhibits of traditional voyaging canoes and Moku’ula, an ancient political and spiritual center that has remained undisturbed for a century and contains royal residences and a mausoleum. There will be live music, hula and polynesian dance. Browse Maui-made crafts and food booths throughout the day. Kids can enjoy Makahiki games with Kula Kaiapuni O Maui ma Nahi’ena’ena (Hawaiian immersion school). A documentary on the Art of Pa‘u will be shown and you can meet the parade’s princesses and riders. Free. 9am-5pm. Kamehameha ‘Iki Park (505 Front St., Lahaina); 808-264-8779

SUNDAY, JUNE 17 FATHER’S DAY – Show Dad you love him with an all-you-can-eat buffet at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel. Enjoy omelets made to order, lots of fresh seafood, carving stations with kiawe roasted rack of lamb, prime rib and much more. Sing-A-Long Movie! Rock of Ages is all cliches, but it’s at least fun. Rock of Ages ★★★★★
BY BARRY WURST II

Rated PG 13/123 Min.
usic purists are a tough crowd to please.
Nothing gets musicians more worked up than debating Bob Dylan acoustic or electric, old Beatles vs. “White” album Beatles, the merit of 80s keyboard pop or what truly defines Punk music. Here’s another coal to the fire: when youngsters give their karaoke best to classic tunes that defined a generation. This is where I come in. I never watch American Idol because I can’t stand to hear some squeaky voiced kid who doesn’t have a learner’s permit but feels confident enough to butcher a song 50 years older than them. Same for Glee which, if you take away the High School Musical plotting and worthy social messages, isn’t much different from Kids Incorporated. For some reason, though, I dug Rock of

All star cast puts on fantastic show with Drew falling on hard times. Everybody now, “Every rose has it’s thooooorn...” Directed by Adam Shankman in the same pretention-free, winking way he helmed the movie musical of Hairspray, Rock of Ages almost never takes itself seriously, teases the musical genre and wants to make you laugh a lot and succeeds heartily. The low point is the lover’s spat, which makes the movie feel longer than it already is. Boneta has a strong voice but isn’t a good enough actor to make us care about his cornball character. Even worse is Hough, who isn’t an actress and, with her Britney Spears on helium voice, should never be allowed anywhere near a song not playing on Radio Disney. Even with the central love story and the main leads sucking the air out of the room, the all-star cast does the heavy lifting and puts on a fantastic show. Catherine Zeta-Jones is
a riot as a conservative politician who sings and dances to Pat Benatar, Baldwin and Russell share the film’s funniest duet and then, there’s Mr. Cruise, who brilliantly embodies a fictionalized Axel Rose, rocks hard in the concert scenes and is the best thing about this movie. Cruise’s performance is at a different level than the rest of this cheesy musical, which is funny enough but would vanish from memory without him. Cruise and Malin Ackerman’s raunchy duet of a Foreigner song will have you howling and flaring your cigarette lighters at the same time. Rock of Ages is just for laughs but Cruise’s amazing performance will make you weep even harder for that Guns and Roses reunion. ■

Ages, the movie adaptation of the smash Broadway musical. Like many high concept poprock musicals, it has a plot that’s thinner than a concert ticket stub and strung together from rock songs. When you have a character named “Sherrie”, rest assured a Steve Perry song is right around the corner. For most, this will be a seriously entertaining night out at the movies, though even open minded rock fans will cringe when they hear what Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand do to “I Love Rock and Roll.” Describing the plot requires listing cliches: Sherrie (“cuz you shoulda been gooone!”), played by Julianne Hough, moves to Los Angeles in hopes of pursuing a singing career. Faster than you can say Coyote Ugly, she’s broke and desperate. A Bieber-haired musician named Drew (Diego Boneta) falls hard for Sherrie and gets her a job at a flailing music club and concert venue, run by Baldwin’s shaggy haired entrepreneur (it takes place in 1987, so everyone in the cast is shaggy haired). Next thing you know, Sherrie is smitten with the boozed up, sex god rocker Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise) and finds her twinkly eyed romance

Sign Language BY CAERIEL CRESTIN GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) I dreamt I was an incompetent witch last night. My broom sputtered and lurched as I flew. I tried to zap electronic yokes from the necks of unicorns held in thrall, but my expectantly pointed finger yielded no spark. Attacked by the harsh, whip-wielding herdmaster, I wove a spell, which fizzled and withered like a dud firecracker. This dream has relevance to you because, like me, a lot of your actions have felt powerless, and some of them have even backfired, lately. Also like me, the only real solution is to laugh, heartily, at yourself, and have faith things will improve. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) For someone who’s so good at taking care of other people, you sure are lousy at nurturing yourself sometimes. My heart goes out to you during those trying moments of life, when a major crisis (or two or three) rears its ugly head. It makes me want to just wrap my arms around you, call in sick to work for you and stroke your head, telling you everything is going to be okay. Because it is. Not only are there people standing by to help you pick up the slack (you need only ask), but there are several strong astrological indicators that tell me–-and now you–-that you’re going to be just fine. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) I half expect you to soar in on your broom handle, wicked-witch style, crashing through a window with dramatic grace. Hurling fireballs and curses, you ought to find yourself the worshipped object of dozens of observers. See, darkness is in. And while your brand of tireless goodness and honesty has its advocates (including myself), I’m invested in keeping your tribe at peak effectiveness–-which means updating your methods. These days, you’re bound to accomplish a lot more through creative mischief and inspired cynicism than through innocent goodwill. I’m not expecting you to advocate real evil (as if you would), but brandishing the delightful kind of pretend evil we all revel in every Halloween will do wonders to help your image, and your impact, too. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) There’s lots of math in nature. Just look at pinecones, seashells, even patterns in the sand made by changing tides. It’s human constructions that are fraught with chaos, despite their rigid attempts at order and control. Living in a city makes it obvious—despite all the straight lines, right angles, and flat surfaces, it’s actually a very disordered place. Lately your head has seemed a little too much like a skyscraper, and not enough like a tree. Instead of forcing thoughts to spike towards the sky like a spear or a missile, can you allow them to grow gracefully towards it, making an allowance for some of the forces that surround you? LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) The Bible’s not the only place that mentions the Great Flood. Many stories worldwide tell of this mythic calamity. According to New Age folklore, the continents of the fabled ancient civilizations, Atlantis and Lemuria, didn’t sink—they were submerged by the Flood and all evidence of their existence erased by the incredible power of forty days and nights of rain. The bad news: You’re in the middle of your own Great Flood. The good news: The continent of your greatest weakness is being covered so entirely that by the time the sun cracks the clouds on the forty-first day, all memory of its actuality will be completely washed away. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) You old blowhard! No, I mean that in the best way— you’re practically a force of nature this week. In fact, you have so much primitive, elemental power at your disposal you might have trouble deciding what form to take. Wonder Twin powers, activate! Your energy could take a focused shape, like a time-eating, villainpursuing alligator, or a bolt of righteous lightning. Or, you could choose a more general form, like a hurricane, or a life-giving desert rain. As an earthquake, you’d measure at least 6.9 on the Richter scale. Now
that you’ve been declared a temporary deity, what shape will your life-changing whimsies take? I guess it depends on who you’d like to worship you. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) It’s all going to be okay. I’ve noticed that as long as you hear this periodically, things really are okay. It doesn’t matter if the sentiment is sincere. It’s true as soon as you decide it is. That’s why I’m thrilled to share with you the truth about your current situation: You’re exactly where you’re supposed to be. You’re also way cooler than you think you are, even when you act dorky or do stupid shit. Whenever you next run face-first into a glass door know this—it’s just practice for the skill that’ll serve you best in the months to come: laughing at yourself. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You’ve spent years living in your head, Cap. Sometimes I think you’re happier there. But there’s a vast audience clamoring for you to make an appearance. Emerge from backstage, if only for a cameo. The standing ovation I expect you’ll receive should whet your taste for applause. You’re always putting off your brilliance for “the right moment.” I hate to destroy this cherished illusion–-but for most of us, the right moment is whenever we create it. You’ll have an easier time creating your first tentative openings to display your dreamy genius this week than you ever have before. Shine! AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Most of the Aquarians I know believe in ghosts. Faeries, witches and monsters under the bed are no big stretch for members of your clan, either. You’re used to dwelling in the realm of the possible, the land of hope and dread. Rationality and hard science are your uneasy allies at best and sworn foes at worst this week. I encourage you–-don’t doubt yourself. You know what you know, and you now have the power to make it real. The realm of the possible has just expanded–-it now includes anything and everything you set your mind to. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Every energy-conversion system involves some waste, or loss of energy. It’s a law of physics. But you’re incredibly effective at converting thought into action this week. Three trips to the gym will practically have you lifting cars, an hour on the Internet will enable you to effortlessly recite hilarious filth for the amusement of all your companions, and a visit to the church of your choice may almost be grounds for canonization. The only things, in fact, that don’t seem to be operating at superhuman levels are your decision-making skills. Cut out the equivocation and just make up your mind, already. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) I admire your strength. It’s almost a shame to tell you that the world you’re hefting around on your eminently capable shoulders has an orbit of its own and doesn’t actually need carrying. That’s right—this huge burden that’s been exhausting you and slowing your steps to a weary stagger isn’t actually yours. It doesn’t even belong to someone else—it’s the kind of weight you can just let go of. So what are you waiting for? Just drop the thing and get the hell out of the way. Then go get ice cream or something. You deserve it. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Even Bulls who must slave like Cinderellas never give up hope of fairy godmothers, rich, generous uncles, winning lottery tickets or other magical reversals of fortune. It’s human nature to wish for unlikely windfalls, even though you cynically know they’re highly unlikely. The bad news is, you’re not due for another surprise inheritance or karma-free miracle for at least another two or three months. The good news is, you’re now uniquely empowered to grant your own wishes, be your own fairy godmother and ignore all rules or limitations regarding your assets turning into pumpkins at midnight.
