No joke–since the 1970s, Hannemann has held jobs in the administrations of Presidents Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Mufi’s racked up more political and government experience than all his opponents put together, and the local Maui establishment–in the form of current Mayor Alan Arakawa and former mayors Charmaine Tavares and James “Kimo” Apana–all lined up to endorse him. Hannemann also writes a column boosting Hawaii tourism for Midweek, though its convoluted prose (eg, “Sustainable tourism also is indeed a balance of preserving our cultural roots while at the same time encouraging our own contemporary cultural fusion to evolve”–May 16, 2012) makes it about as fun to read as junior high english homework.

SENATE SHENANIGANS
Lingle on a sub in 2010
There are 11 people running active campaigns to succeed US Senator Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii, but the biggest three names in the race seem to be rolling over everyone else. The juiciest news so far is that former Republican Governor Linda Lingle is paying $5,000 a week to Oceanic Time Warner Cable so she can have her own 24/7 cable channel that shows nothing but Linda Lingle footage, commercials and campaign films. According to Honolulu Civil Beat’s June 15 post on the channel, it will cost her campaign $105,000 if she keeps this up until November. While nothing to laugh at, spending more than 100G's on her own TV channel is nothing to Lingle: according to the latest data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics, Lingle’s campaign committee has already raised $3.1 million, but has so far only spent slightly less than $849,000. Besides, while having your own channel is certainly something to brag about, concentrating on just one station means it’s very easy for people to watch something else (like The Colbert Report, which skewered the new channel). And that something else just might be former Democratic Congressman Ed Case. On June 15, The Maui News endorsed him in the Democratic primary race, though more for what he’s not (“a solid vote for ideology without compromise”) than for what he is (“trying to run a campaign based on reality”). Of course, Lingle and Case share the fact that they’re both out of power. Democratic Congresswoman Mazie Hirono (endorsed by George "Mr. Sulu" Takei!) is the only one of the Big Three still in power, and that’s a huge boost. For instance, on June 8 her office mailed me a large envelope, unsolicited. Marked “U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES” and “PUBLIC DOCUMENT” (sent at taxpayer expense), it contained a letter from her, addressed to me personally, introducing her new “sustainability plan” that would “outline how Washington can help Hawaii grow more of our own food and support our state’s renewable energy goals.” With the letter was a large blue folder containing her business card, a press release and a 35page copy of the plan itself, complete with colorful photos, charts and 129 footnotes. Nothing on the letter, plan or envelope said anything about Hirono’s Senate campaign, but it didn’t have to. Now that’s power that cable channels and Maui News endorsements can’t buy.
IF ONLY THIS HAPPENED LAST MONTH...
During the late night hours of June 14, War Memorial Gym flooded, causing at least $200,000 in damage. “County work crews said the watermain break was caused by someone hitting a fire hydrant in the Maui Lani subdivision at around 5:30 p.m.,” said the official County of Maui press release sent out the next day. “The crash blew a regulator which sent high
pressure water through the system and overwhelmed the aging pipes beneath the gym sometime prior to 11:30 p.m. The water then burst through the floor in one of the gym offices. County workers at the scene overnight said there was enough water flooding hallways and offices to fill an olympic-sized pool.” Now if you’ll think back, Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa asked the county to start spending $21.5 million on a new gym complex! It was the signature element of his call for the county to “be bold.” “War Memorial Gymnasium was built in the 1950’s in honor of our Maui residents who gave their lives during military service,” Arakawa said on March 23, when he delivered his Fiscal Year 2013 budget to the Maui County Council. “The gymnasium has served this community well but we need a proper facility that will fit our growing needs. Also the cost to repair the gym continues to increase as the building gets older and things need to be replaced more often.” But it wasn’t to be. Earlier this month, the council authorized a mere $100,000 when it passed the county’s budget. Councilmembers Mike Victorino and Riki Hokama seemed most opposed to the gym expansion plans, which was especially interesting considering

that Keoki Kerr’s May expose of Maui County Council staff bonuses for Hawaii News Now identified those two as granting their staffers the most bonuses in 2011 ($13,750 and $13,000, respectively). Irony, though soggy, is still wondrous to behold.
KAMEHAMEHA DAY FOULS UP ABERCROMBIE
As has been well reported, Governor Neil Abercrombie messed up a judicial appointment. Not by refusing to make public his short list of appointments, but by actually not making the appointment in time. On June 12, Abercrombie nominated Wailuku attorney Peter T. Cahill to be a judge on Maui’s Second Circuit Court. The only problem was that Abercrombie had missed the constitutional 30-day deadline for the appointment by two days. Abercrombie’s office immediately sent out a press release announcing the mistake, which was duly reported by all the state’s big media outlets. Cahill didn’t really lose out, because the Judicial Selection Commission, which by law got to make the appointment in the event the governor didn’t, turned around and appointed Cahill again. So it’s all good, except on June 15 Oahu blogger Ian Lind pointed out that no one had yet reported exactly why Abercrombie had missed making the appointment within 30 days. Lind blamed both the governor’s administrative director and the media for not reporting any explanation for the foul-up. I still had the original governor’s office press release in my inbox, so after reading Lind’s post I emailed Donalyn DelaCruz, Abercrombie’s Deputy Director of Communications, and asked why the appointment was made so late. After first referring me back to the original press release (which never addressed the “Why?” question) she offered the following: “The deadline, which fell on a holiday weekend, had caused confusion by staff who believed that the business-day of Tuesday was the effective deadline,” DelaCruz wrote. “In some cases if a deadline falls on a nonbusinessday, the deadline would fall on the following business-day. That did not apply in this case in which the Constitution prescribes the timeline as ‘within 30 days.’ Therefore, when the Governor received the list on May 11th, he had until Sunday, June 10th to make the appointment.” Of course: it was Kamehameha Day’s fault! Yes, a month ago the governor’s staff could have asked the Attorney General’s office for a clear deadline ruling. Or Abercrombie could have simply made the appointment a whole lot sooner than what his office thought was the final day of decision. But it’s more fun to blame a holiday. ■

NEWS OF THE WEIRD BY CHUCK SHEPARD
EVEN MASS MURDERERS NEED FRIENDS
Norway is home to perhaps the most inmate-friendly prison in the world, but the correctional system has an imminent crisis, as Anders Behring Breivik (the confessed killer of 77 people last year) is nearing formal conviction and sentencing. Officials fear the sociopathic Breivik will try to kill inmates to add to his toll, yet Norwegian law forbids solitary confinement as cruel. Consequently, according to a May report by Norway’s Verdens Gang newspaper, the officials have begun a search to select, hire and train appropriate “friends” to hang out with Breivik behind bars to win his trust and prevent further mayhem. Among Breivik’s favorite recreational distractions: chess and hockey.
CULTURAL DIVERSITY
Collections of comically poor translations are legion, but the Beijing municipal government, in sympathy with English-speaking restaurantgoers, published a helpful guidebook recently of what the restaurateurs were trying, though inartfully, to say. In an April interview with the authors, NBC News learned the contents of “Hand Shredded A$$ Meat” [sic] (merely donkey meat) and other baffling English descriptions (all taken from actual menus), such as “Cowboy Leg,” “Red-Burned Lion Head,” “Blow-up Flatfish With No Result” and the very unhelpful “Tofu Made by Woman With Freckles” and “Strange Flavor Noodles.”
HAIR SUPERIORITY
Competitive facial-hair-growers are revered in some countries, with Pakistan and India featured in recent reports. Pakistani Amir Muhammad Afridi, 42, whose handlebar lip hair extends in an arc almost to the top of his head, told reporters he had to move from his rural home to the more secular Peshawar because of threats that his pride and joy was un-Islamic. And the Guinness Book recordholder, Ram Singh Chauhan, 54, of India, offered grooming tips in an interview with BBC News, revealing that he keeps his 14-footlong moustache conditioned by cleaning and combing it for an hour each day (treated with coconut-based hair oil) and lamented that he must wind it around his neck to keep it from interfering with his daily activities.
NOW THAT’S ART!
In the spirit of the empowerment of dissidents around the world, activists in Ukraine and South Africa recently erected downright disrespectful statues lampooning leaders. In Kiev and the western city of Lvov, Ukraine, activists unveiled 5-foot-high statues of former Soviet dictator Josef Stalin urinating. (Police in both cities took them down quickly, however.) And South African artist Brett Murray museum-exhibited a red, black and yellow acrylic painting of President Jacob
Zuma (“Hail to the Thief II”) with his genitals exposed, an allusion to Zuma’s having beaten a rape charge in 2006. The Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg, which first resisted pressure, agreed in May to remove the painting.
BATHTUB DEATH EPIDEMIC
Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare announced in April that it would begin a national inquiry over the alarming number of bathtub deaths in 2011–nearly three times the number of those killed in traffic accidents. News reports pointed out that many Japanese workers relax in tubs at the end of the day, even when they have over-imbibed and are vulnerable to drowning.

WAIT–THAT’S ILLEGAL?
In Kent, Washington, in May, Yong Hyun Kim, 21, was charged with assault at a movie house. Annoyed by a group of kids in the row behind him who were constantly talking, laughing and throwing popcorn during Titanic, Yong slapped the nearest boy, bloodying his nose and knocking out a tooth. And in Pirmasens, Germany, in May, a 61-year-old woman was fined the equivalent of almost $1,000 for assault. Frustrated by telemarketers’ constantly cold-calling her, she took it out on one by blowing a whistle into the telephone, allegedly causing permanent damage to the telemarketer’s hearing.

CHUTZPAH!
Ms. Stormy Moody was arrested and charged with aggravated burglary in Henderson County, Tenn., in May after her next-door neighbor returned from a trip and discovered that quite a few items (from the petty to the more expensive) were missing from the home. For some reason, Moody felt secure enough to be wearing some of the clothing as she chatted sympathetically with the victim about the missing items.
WHEN SEXTING GETS UGLY
Most public officials caught “sexting” immediately turn remorseful, but not Michigan appeals court judge Wade McCree III. In April, when the husband of a female bailiff in McCree’s court saw that the judge had sent the bailiff a shirtless photo of himself, McCree told a curious reporter for Detroit’s WJBK-TV, “Hot dog, yep, that’s me.” “I’ve got no shame in my game.” “I’m in no more clothes than I’ll be at the Y this afternoon when I swim my mile.” The still-irate husband said he would pursue a judicial commission complaint against McCree. ■ chuck@mauitime.com

ith a ring in his pocket and a secret on his lips, Jedidiah McLin packed a Thermos of coffee and drove his girlfriend to the Haleakala summit to watch the sunrise. As the sun rose over the iconic volcano, a stranger asked Jedediah if he’d take a picture of her and her husband. “Yes, if you return the favor,” Jedediah said. She was game and after he handed her his camera, Jedediah walked over and got down on one knee next to Jessica Mandelin, his girlfriend. There he proposed as the woman neither of them knew snapped shots of him slipping the ring on her finger. The next day they set a date: on May 10, they’d have a South Maui Rock & Roll wedding. Their first date had been on May 10, and Rock & Roll embodied their mutual love for music, a topic that Jedediah says got his foot in the door. “We were talking about an Alice and Chains CD and I said she would love Mad Season,” says Jedediah. “I asked her address and said I would drop it off to her.” “When he got there I met him in the driveway,” says Jessica. “In my mind I was just going to grab the CD and send him on his way.
But my heart decided otherwise and somehow I invited him in. Two years later we are married.” Island Pinups and Tamiz photography captured their ecstatic engagement with a styled make-up and hair photo shoot (done pin-up style) that Jessica and Jedidiah used to announce their big day. They had their wedding ceremony at Keolahou Church in North Kihei and the reception in Wailea at Gannon’s. A friend made their cake, and a coworker at Joe’s did their flowers. “We kept it easy and tried to follow our own style,” says Jessica. “We agreed on everything from the decor to the clothes and colors. The groom wore black and white, I wore white, and the wedding party was in black and red, with my bridesmaids in fishnets. Our friends did the set-up at Gannon’s, and we both work at Joe’s Bar and Grill.” After the ceremony, there was a surprise waiting for the couple in the parking lot. “I drive a ‘53 Chevy Bel Air, and my friends attached cans to the bumper for the drive to the reception,” says Jedidiah. “Everyone was cheering and whistling as we drove down South Kihei Road. That was such an amazing feeling with my bride in my car.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso

Katie Elledge and Casey Porter • Kapalua • May 20, 2012 atie Elledge and Casey Porter took a big chance trading their Arizona lives for oneway tickets to Maui. Neither of them had jobs or housing set up when they landed at Kahului airport on Jan. 11 of this year. That night they slept in a tent in Olowalu. Soon they followed their dreams to Lahaina, where they found work: Katie as a hostess at Lahaina Grill, Casey at Lahaina Cruise Company at Lahaina Harbor. Not long after, Casey proposed to his sweetheart of more than five years at a waterfall where they were picnicking for the day. Katie said yes and they tied the knot at an intimate wedding with immediate family in Kapalua. “I had an idea in my head for the dress and it took me days to find it online on a site a coworker suggested,” says Katie. “It was all satin with no train. I didn’t really have a theme except to keep things simple. The white orchids tied it all together. We had a lei ceremony and all the immediate family had matching orchid leis boutonnieres. I didn’t even try on my dress until the day of my wedding, but it all came together beautifully.” Kahu Kamuela married the two on a sunny day–exactly six years after they started dating– at Kapalua Bay in an intimate ceremony with
just family and close friends that ended with a rainbow. Casey said that they burned a unity candle for Katie’s late mother as a unique touch that was very special to her. “When Casey and I had our first dance as husband and wife, that was the best moment,” says Katie. “The toasts downstairs led by my in laws and family was great too. But my favorite was our own toasts to each other.” Plush Salon did her hair and makeup, and the flowers were from A Special Touch. Hower Wedding Media did the ceremony photos. The reception was held on the Maui Princess where they had a party of 35 reserved top deck in front of the live music, with a private room downstairs with their own full service bar where they did the cake ceremony and toasts. They had prime rib, chicken and macadamia nut-crusted mahi mahi served on board and their two-tier, lilikoi-filled cake was done by The Bakery. “It was the best day of my life,” says Katie. “I couldn’t wait for Casey to see me when I was all dolled up in my dress. To this day I still get choked up when I think about that moment.” ■

“I customized the fabric to fit Nicole’s shape,” Williams says. “At the final fitting she brought in her shoes and we did the straps and hem. She was getting married outside and the dress had volume and flow and a relaxed Maui style perfect for her.” Rockett loved the results. “Larissa was awesome,” says Rockett. “I fell in love with that dress and it looked great the entire party. I was looking for something a little different. I wanted it elegant but comfortable and loved that design.” Williams also recently designed a dress for the officiant of a wedding: a graceful caftan with kimono sleeves in cream and black silk. She says she steers away from the cupcake style of gowns that are more structured. “I can totally get into a corseted top with a flowy bottom,” says Williams. “But those big gowns take a month in advance and a team to create. I can do it but if it’s too structured I just don’t vibe with it.” ■

Opening a small showroom and studio at 505 Front Street in Lahaina two years ago, she has three dimensions to her production: couture, vintage and ready-to-wear contemporary pieces. Of the three, it’s her couture line that creates her unique bridal and reception gowns. “My love of fabric really fits into Maui well,” she says. “I like to play in negative space, I like cut outs and sheer. It’s the hand of the fabric that makes everything. I am a stickler with the fabrics.” A custom gown or dress begins with a consultation where Williams considers body type and assesses what the bride has in mind.
Then she selects a design from her cache. Next she builds a muslin–basically a first draft of the garment made from a plain fabric. Then after fitting and refining the muslin, she creates the garment using the actual fabric–in most cases silk, cotton, viola or chiffon. “I love simplicity,” Williams says. “You won’t find my designs full of complicated ties or full crinoline skirts. Drape and flow is what I’m into. I have a stock of beautiful fabrics but if I don’t have what the client had in mind, I order swatches from LA.” Williams also says there’s a trend here to wear a “reception” gown that’s different from the wedding ceremony attire. For instance, she recently created a silk dupioni cocktail dress in red and black plaid for a bride to wear with combat boots at her reception. For Maui bride Sara Tekula, the concept was to have all the guests in white while she and groom Joeseph Imhoff were colorful. Williams describes the couture silk gown she designed for Tekula as “fairy maiden.” But for bride Nicole Rockett’s wedding to Page Willenbrink, it was a chiffon and silk cream gown with beige accents–country chic.

ver wanted to see your name up in lights? Is walking the red carpet down the aisle at your Hollywood A-list wedding just a dream? Of course you do, and Joe Cortez, Jason Salmo, Alex Ragonton, Glen Cabrera, Creighton Rodrigues and Denver Cortez can help. They started Next Level Weddings (NLW) two years ago to provide Maui’s brides and grooms with DJ and MC entertainment. Now they say the requests for high tech visuals and entertainment has grown them into a fullservice party entertainment specialists. “We evolved together from nightclub events that we were doing in Maui,” says Joe Cortez. “We invested in the equipment to do these parties ourselves and started in the corporate and school events realm with glow parties. We even have a glow in the dark bubble machine.” They had a learning curve going into weddings. They had to learn the new traditions, but also had a lot of entertainment experience from DJ-ing and producing club parties around the island. Meeting with couples to find out their dream wedding was step one. Figuring out how to make the dream come true was step two. “At our first meeting with the client we go through all the details of what they are anticipating for their wedding,” says Joe. “And then I plan the timeline. The timeline is one of the most important services I provide. It’s the flow of the entertainment, and it keeps the flow of events really tight. Knowing what comes next. Once we have the program and get the other vendors on board, it’s non-stop fun at the wedding.” Joe says creating and perfecting the timeline is the key to having a smooth and exciting wedding. For them it’s the plan that holds all of the energy to the party. “I become one with that timeline,” says Salmo. “As MC, it’s my job to roll with the punches, keep the energy up at the party. If anything changes, things need adjusting as the party moves on. I can make it work. I make sure there is never a dull moment. Even simple

announcements can be fun and exciting.” They don’t have any specific packages they sell to brides. Instead, they meet with a couple and ask what they envision for their dream day, and then they try to make it happen. At one recent wedding the couple wanted a Hollywood-style event complete with red carpet interviews as their guests were entering. Cortez and Salmo got to work coordinating a videographer to broadcast the action to television screens inside the ballroom. Photographers played paparazzi as guests arrived and Salmo did E Network-style interviews. One of their more popular requests is for up-lighting the decor that beams spotlights of theme colors on the walls, or putting a special light that monograms the names of the couples on the walls of the ballroom. First dances get special voice-over messages that the bride and groom get to hear for the first time. Special messages to dad and mom are in vogue, too. Since the popularity of Youtube, choreographing a dance with the wedding party has become popular and NLW has also been making custom dance tracks and music montages. Cortez and Salmo say their services are geared for any wedding, but most of their business goes
toward local brides and grooms, and their weddings tend to be larger. Another creative way they use to entertain guests is with their version of The Newlywed Game. Called “The Shoelywed Game,” it asks the bride and groom to answer questions about each other by holding up a pink or blue slipper. “It’s been a dream of mine to be a game show host so this is a win-win activity,” says Salmo. “The audience really gets into it and the bride and groom always have a great time. We leave the creativity to the wedding party but try to bring out their personalities and what they like to do to keep their event unique to them. It’s all about them on this day.” Joe Cortez agrees. “Our goal is to create a stress-free environment so they can have fun,” he says. “We are passionate about that, all of us, so that really shows in what we do. All of us have broadcast or nightclub experience and we can bring that pop culture into the mix. One of the new things coming in is a new type of low lying smoke that stays at your ankles and creates a lot of drama while dancing. We call it ‘Dancing in the Clouds.” Then again, smokey dance floors, red carpet interviews and game shows aren’t for everyone. And that’s where Joel Katz of Hawaiian Steel Guitar comes in. He plays Hawaiian steel guitar, slack key style guitar, jazz guitar, ‘ukulele and piano. His live music is personal, elegant and adds an intimate touch to a special event. He says he does all kinds of weddings, “from two to 500” guests at the “luxury hotel, private residence, beach or jungle.” “The steel guitar is the romantic and nostalgic sound of Hawaiian music,” says Katz. “The Hawaiian steel guitar is a unique specialty and I can do this solo for a very full and beautiful sound. I often play acoustic guitar for ceremonies followed by the Hawaiian steel guitar. I can play all of these instruments at an event in any combination.” ■

Now that civil unions are legal in Hawaii, how are they doing? he promise made back on Feb. 23, 2011 was nothing less than the fulfillment of a fundamental civil right. “This signing today of this measure says to all of the world that they are welcome,” said Governor Neil Abercrombie, finally making it legal for the State of Hawaii to legalize same-sex civil unions. “That everyone is a brother or sister here in paradise.” It’s easy to forget now, but this was a huge deal at the time. A bill legalizing civil unions had crossed Governor Linda Lingle’s desk near the end of her term of office, and her decision to veto it after weeks of indecision had made national headlines.
Abercrombie had campaigned on making civil unions legal, and it was one of the first things he did in office. The law, known as Act 1, went into effect on Jan. 1 of this year. Considering the big headlines and national hype that went along with the signing, it was somewhat surprising to find that legions of same-sex couples haven’t exactly been rushing to fill out civil union applications. According to Janice Okuba, the public information officer for the state Department of Health, as of May 31, Hawaii has seen just 347 civil unions registered. In the same five month period, Okuba said Hawaii has registered 8,722 “traditional marriages.” “Typically we have 20,000 marriages a
year,” Okuba said. “The majority of them aren’t residents.” When asked for a resident/tourist breakdown on the civil union figure, Okuba said the department is still working on that because they’re “short on staff.” Neither Okuba or anyone else contacted for this story could explain why so few couples have registered for civil unions, though it’s possible they–like most couples–are merely waiting for June. Travel agencies advertising civil union packages for couples wanting to tie the knot in Hawaii seem to be having mixed experiences. Jana Rothenberg of Hawaiianstyleweddings.com said in the first six months of this year same-sex couples booking ceremonies account for 38 percent of her total business but brought in about 44 percent of her income. Rothenberg said civil unions made up about a third of her business on Maui, half of her bookings on Oahu, 44 percent of ceremonies on Kauai and just a quarter of bookings on Hawaii Island. She’s also noticed that civil union ceremonies can be somewhat different from traditional marriages. “The couples are so joyful,” she said. “They’re over-the-top, expressive and so happy. Not tenuous at all. It almost brings me to my knees, thinking of how appreciative these couples are. It’s sweet.” But not every travel agency advertising civil union packages is raking in money. “We thought there was going to be a big flood,” said Tim Clark of Hawaiian Island Weddings, Inc. (Hawaiicivilunions.net). “I’m not going to say it’s been disappointing, but they’ve been few and far between.” But Clark did share an interesting story of a couple who got married twice. Clark said his company recently booked a ceremony for two gentlemen from Texas. The men told Clark that they were already legally married in the State of California, having secured a marriage certificate during that brief period of time between the June 16, 2008 legalization of same-sex marriage and the Nov. 5, 2008 passage of Proposition 8, which overturned the law (Prop 8 itself is in the process of getting struck down as unconstitutional). “Are you doing a civil union in every state where it’s possible?” Clark says he asked the couple. No, they said. They were thinking of retiring someday to Hawaii, and wanted to make sure their union was legally binding. After all, Clark said, “the odds of a civil union being recognized in Texas are slim.” Applying for a civil union in Hawaii is as easy as getting a traditional marriage certificate (they also cost the same: $60 plus $5 application processing fee). Strange and Ill-Conceived The best thing about Pixar’s Brave is Merida’s red hair
Film The whole thing feels off.
BY BARRY WURST II
Brave
A
★★★★★
Rated PG / 93 Min.
young Scottish princess named Merida is sick and tired of her Queen mother telling her the proper way to behave as a member of royalty. Even worse, she is expected to marry one of the young men from three neighboring tribes as a gesture of maintaining peace. What Merida wants is her freedom, which she experiences on her days off when she teaches herself to become a brilliant archer. Merida is an unusual lead for a Disney/ Pixar film, as she is feisty, female, Scottish and possessing awesomely curly red hair. Coming from the studio that gave us Finding Nemo, everything about Merida and her world is vivid and beautiful. I was especially awestruck every time someone splashes water, as it never looked like animation at all.
Anew Tattoo By Nancy
To no one’s surprise, the animation in the new Pixar film is spectacular but the story is strange and ill conceived. I won’t give it away but there is a second act twist that takes the tale in an odd, clumsy direction that all about shoots the whole film in the foot. There are elements here that are appealing, such as the rollicking humor, collection of reliably wacky Scottish stereotypes, a bit of magic and a core theme of the disconnect between a mother and daughter. Too bad none of these ever come together. The plot thread of the kingdom full of rowdy Scots provides some cheap laughs but never pays off, beyond some surprising CGI butt shots. The glowing blue “forest whisps” look and even sound cool as they flitter about but aren’t much on character. Same for the witch, brought in for story and comic relief purposes but is a clunky non-villain. Most pivotally, the gap of age and understanding between the stubborn queen and her free-spirited daughter isn’t handled well. If you think about it, the way the story deals with their disconnect is mean
spirited and inconclusive. I like that Pixar designed a film with a strong willed female lead with a desire to express her independence but, for all her intelligence and pluck, the movie doesn’t deserve her. Rated PG for “Scary Action and Rude Humor,” I’d advise parents to consider the former a warning for their under 10-year old kids. A little girl sat next to me at a preview screening and, frequently during the film’s mid-section, kept saying aloud, “this is scary, I’m scared!” Later into the film, she started to ask, “Mommy, can we go home?” I don’t recommend entirely taking the advice of a small child into consideration, but I knew how she felt. After last year’s pretty to look at but dismal Cars 2, this is another dud from the otherwise reliable Pixar. Maybe I’m putting them on too high a pedestal after making, to name just a few, Toy Story, The Incredibles, Up and Wall-E. On the other hand, their gift has been applying extraordinary visuals

to cleverly shaped stories with endearing characters. Here, the story is a wash-out that the gorgeous visuals make just-watchable. Considering the big action set pieces found throughout Pixar’s best films (the pelican chase in Finding Nemo, the conveyor belt of doors in Monsters Inc. and the climax of Up), nothing here feels exceptional and the ending lacks excitement and doesn’t give a needed emotional closure. The first 20 minutes are promising but, once the story takes a crucial wrong turn, the whole thing feels off. The only thing I will remember about Brave years from now are those awesome, unruly locks of red hair, but not much about the girl whose hair it was, nor the adventures she had. ■

Sign Language BY CAERIEL CRESTIN CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Most people think in words, carrying on an internal dialogue with themselves as a way of understanding reality. But that’s not the only way. People who are born Deaf, for example, seem to think more effectively in images, and only learn thinking in words as a second language, if at all. Computers “think” in numbers. You have an incredible capacity to express yourself and understand different modes of expression this week. Try learning a new way of thinking and articulating your thoughts. Talk in circles, think in spirals, or calculate the square root of your relationships. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Even deposed kings and queens still have to work for a living, according to members of the International Monarchist League. Admittedly, some have retained private means, but many have had to take up professions like real estate or insurance. There’s not much room left in the world for royalty, my dear. Think about that one the next time you want to act like a tyrant. You may not be more than one unpopular decree from a revolution. And you thought being queen was all glamour and worshipful subjects! Nope: Being royal still means walking on eggshells or across flaming coals a lot of the time–-you just get to do it in nicer shoes. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) What you’re feeling now is the pain of labor. You’re giving birth to a wild new idea with a life of its own. You could painlessly bring it into the world now while it’s still small and helpless, but it’ll be as ugly as a newborn kangaroo (they resemble wet pink erasers), and need as much care and nurture to survive in this harsh world. Or you could carry it in your head and quietly allow it to develop there until it finally, painfully drops into this life like an open-eyed, furry little baby goat, able to walk (and play) on its own within minutes. The choice is yours! LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) In my other life as a perennial world traveler, I’ve encountered some pretty crazy situations. But it’s not the surreal extremes of my wanderings that have changed me the most. It’s how widely people’s perceptions of reality differ from place to place. Staying too long in one location, my reality collapses to tunnel vision, until I forget that there’s a whole big wide world out there—or, if that’s too small, a seemingly infinite universe beyond that! Feel too contained by your current reality? Imagine who you could be in the Australian Outback, or India, or as a Martian colonist. You are also all those people–-be them. Your local reality will accommodate you, I promise. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) For every new idea you learn or think up, fresh synapses are physically created in your brain to accommodate it. Research on the effects of LSD shows that it drastically changes the shape of your brain, as it rapidly generates new synapses by the thousands. This ably demonstrates how ideas and information can actually have physical weight, substance, and energy, however slight. Even reading this paragraph is permanently altering the structure of your brain. Pretty cool, huh? Luckily for you, new ideas are as common as cockroaches this week, and your brain will never look the same. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) “I’m King of the Slide!” proclaimed one diminutive eightyear-old at the playground. He stood at the top of the slide, arms raised, filled with royal triumph–-until those coming up the ladder shoved him backwards down the slide. This week will be filled with moments like this for you. You, too, can ferociously hang on while you’re pushed and your fingers are pried from the edge. You may be able to maintain your grip, but you might want to consider accepting your fate with dignity and grace. It’s only a short walk around and back up the ladder, and by next week, no one should stand in your way. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Do you remember the moment when you first realized the school bully was an insecure and unhappy human being, and perhaps experienced a second
of compassion? Or that your parents were actually people, not just Mom and Dad? At least three two-dimensional characters in your life (like your mail carrier or landlord) will reveal an interesting third (or fourth or fifth) dimension of their lives to you this week. You might be shocked to discover that some people you thought knew you well only see a flat paper cut-out of you, and need enlightening themselves. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) If you stick unripe bananas in a paper bag with a sweet, brown-speckled one, the green bunch will turn yellow and ready-to-eat more quickly. I don’t know why it works, but there’s a delicious parallel to this process that applies specifically to you. Maturation by association–-it’s been so evident in you that I have to applaud your choice in the company you’ve kept lately. While I know you’re blessed with eternal youthfulness, that shouldn’t keep you from developing the most powerful traits of age: foresight, sensitivity, and wisdom, all gleaned from the mistakes and successes of your (and your friends’) past experiences. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) If your life were an actual road trip, (instead of a metaphorical one) you might feel as if you were headed for a town called Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, Lost, Minnesota, or Uncertain, Texas. But your feeling would be wrong. Things are not so dire as that! While you’re not headed for a place as wonderful as Carefree, Arizona, Little Heaven, Delaware, or Utopia, Florida, I do have a feeling that the stretch of highway you’re navigating leads to someplace that’s good for you, maybe Rocky Comfort, Arkansas, Happy Valley, Hawaii, or Good Hope, Maryland. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Even with your eyes closed, you’ll make at least half the three-pointers you shoot at the garbage can this week. Approximately a third of your casual flirtations could result in an invitation home. Fully three-quarters of your work will pass your boss’s inspection on the first try. Some points to ponder: How successful would you be if you actually looked at what you were aiming at? Keep your eyes open when throwing something away, be it paper, plastic, or person. Don’t flirt unless you’re willing to put out. And, do everything right the first time, since no one is going to make you do it again. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Irritable much? This week, we crown you Queen Brat. Even though you’ll order us beheaded, or simply bite our heads off yourself, we ought to accord you the status you so often yield to those bossy Leos, Aries or even those spoiled Pisces. Every so often you erupt like a dormant volcano, and all who stand in the flow of your molten anger had better watch out. Like a human Vesuvius, you’ve got so much power seething just below your usually placid surface. Don’t resist your rage if it boils over this week; you’ll give yourself an ulcer. But try not to incinerate anyone–-you might need them later. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) The wizened sage meditated on the stony spire of the mountain. It occurred to her that there had been no Seekers for many moons. They used to come looking for knowledge, advice, compassion. She was lonely. Contemplating the serpentine path down the perilous slope, fear and dread filled her. She amazed herself with an open mouth hollering down the mountainside, seeking aid from those who lived below. Your friends—those simple, loveable, thick-ankled peasants—have wisdom you’ve been overlooking. Now that you suddenly don’t have all the answers (only quite a few), I hope you’re willing to ask the village idiots for a few of the missing pieces.
