O

nce again, we come to MauiTime’s biggest, most anticipated issue of the year. You’ve been waiting for it, and here it is: the 2012 Best of Maui issue. In many ways, this is your issue. Your votes dictated who and what appear in the following pages. You, our loyal readers, made the calls on who serves

the best burgers or which shop sells the best bikinis or what beach is best for barbecuing parties. You can cheer the selections that fill these pages, or you can complain, it’s your choice. But what we hope you do is have fun with this issue. We certainly did, and managed to convince some of the island’s most talented tattoo

GOODS & SERVICES TOMMY TINGLE - BLACK & GRAY

T

ommy Tingle, the owner and artist at Mid Pacific Tattoo in Lahaina, had to join the Navy to get his first tattoo. His father was a Navy man, and Tingle says, “I grew up looking at that anchor on his arm. My dad said I had to enlist to get one.” As it turned out, the military stint didn’t last long. Tingle later apprenticed with Steve Wetherington in North Carolina and started tattooing in 1997 at Good Karma in Wilmington. Tingle sought out artists who inspired him– such as Martin Lacasse and Angelo Miller–and traveled extensively in his early years, developing his art, tattooing his way through Texas, Canada, Washington, Oahu, Maui and Costa Rica. “I was growing as an artist every step of the way, reinspired with every move,” he says. “I kept refining my style of illustrated realism. It’s realism that holds up in time because of its boldness.” With the black and gray work featured in Best of Maui, Tingle says, “There are three parts to black and gray: black– and I mean black–mid tones and skin. If you don’t have that perfectly proportioned, it’s not gonna hold up.” Tingle calls Mid Pacific Tattoo on Lahainaluna his field of dreams. “I wanted to build a respectful shop with a friendly and clean atmosphere,” he says. “I knew exactly what I wanted.” Tommy Tingle, Mid Pacific Tattoo, 196 Lahainaluna Rd., Lahaina. 808-661-1100. Best Local Clothing Designer Maui Thing I’ve said it before, but I would much rather be in fashion, than in love. If you’re like-minded, Maui Thing is greater than cupid and much better dressed. Simple and stylish, Maui Thing exemplifies the “summer is a state of mind” mentality. The shop regularly supports community events, spotlights local artists, and incorporates local themes into the clothing. For example, did you notice the octopus logo is loosely in the shape of Maui Island? Clever, right? 7 N. Market St., Wailuku; 808-249-0215; mauithing.com; @mauithing @angryshortgirl

Best Swimwear Shop Pakaloha Shopping for bikini bottoms used to be a complex issue. You had the choice of either look cute or being able to swim. Too often, those bootypoppin’ bottoms were guaranteed to have more than your booty poppin’ out if you did anything more than sunbathe. Thanks to Pakaloha, your cheeks never again have to be divided, unless that’s the cut you’re going for. Pakaloha boasts of the sexiest, sportiest and most importantly, slipproof, swimwear on the island. It’s your one stop shop for our year-round bikini season. 815 Front St., Lahaina, 661-6888 / 159 Hana Hwy, Paia; 808579-8882; pakalohamaui.com @angryshortgirl

Best Bridal Shop Elly’s Formal Wear It’s not that I’m bitter. It’s just some of my married friends make it hard to understand why they did it in the first place. “It was a mistake!” they cry. Out come the wedding pictures, to be dissected and scrutinized, for every possible foreshadowing of impending doom. “At least you looked good,” I tell them, picking my way through discarded taffeta. “Of course we looked good,” they spit out, directing the statement at the closest wine bottle. “Getting everything from Elly’s is the only thing we got right.” 145 N. But what really stole my heart were the accessories: eye-catching jewelry and adorable purses galore! Coupled with their reasonable prices, it's no surprise Mahina topped the list. 23 Baldwin Ave., Paia; 808-579-9131 / 1913 S. Best New Business Hitter’s Paradise I feel frustrated about a lot of things. When I can’t ďŹ nd my keys. When my neighbor decides 1am is the perfect time to get his karaoke on. But Wokstar was more than a place to get fried rice, noodles, potstickers and the most amazing, delicious jaffel sandwiches around–it was a gathering place where locals, visitors, Maui Roller Girls and clubbers trying to stave off drunkeness could hang until midnight, eating delicious food and having lots of fun. Guys, having a favorite recycling center is a little like having a favorite child. Sure, parents probably have one, but you’re not supposed to say it out loud. Okay, the Kihei location is spacious and well lit. Point taken, it’s just a tiny bit more conveniently located, right off Piilani Hwy. And yeah, it does have that nifty HI5 Redemption Center, but c’mon, you’re making all the other recycling centers feel bad. E. Welakahao Rd. at Piilani Hwy., Kihei @angryshortgirl

Barnes & Noble Given that this is the only place on the island to buy new books, music and movie releases (as well as those cool LEGO architecture sets), and the fact that the good people at Barnes & Noble agreed to sell my own novel and host book signings for me so that I might sell my novel, I have to agree with our readers on this one. Barnes & Noble may be a giant corporate chain, but it’s also a giant bookstore. Of course, it’s located way over in Lahaina, which isn’t exactly convenient for much of the island. Given that, readers may want to watch the growth of the runner-up, Maui Friends of the Library, which now operates used bookstores in Pu‘unene, at the Queen Kaahumanu Center in Kahului and at the Wharf Cinema Center in Lahaina. I am appalled we’re perpetuating this zombie-fetish glorification. And on the West Side, too! Lately, where ever I go it’s zombie apocalypse this, cannibalism that! We’ve got enough problems, helping zombies with midnight munchies shouldn’t be one of them. As an American, I demand—what? That’s not what a headshop is? It’s a what? Huh. I guess that’s fine, then. You know this is Maui, right? Head (with or without your body attached) on down to Westside Vibes, featuring Maui’s largest and best selection of tobacco supplies, concert gear and other local products, including “Purple Drank.” 1087 Limahana Place ste 1B, Lahaina, 808-667-1900 @angryshortgirl

Bounty Music takes pride in the quality of their ukuleles, and for good reason. On Maui, a guy carrying around a ukulele is as ubiquitous as eating poke at pau hana. Everybody loves that guy. The one who shakes hands with everybody, whose loud laugh gives him away in a crowd, the one that gets called “Unko” even by people the same age. But would we be as convivial if he was carrying around a violin or tuba? No. The ukulele is cherished because it symbolizes good times and good friends. Bounty Music strives to provide Unkos (and Aunties) with an instrument that is worthy of those treasured memories. 111 Hana Hwy, Kahului; 808-871-1141; ukes.com @angryshortgirl

How can you not love a surf shop that has a vintage VW Bug suspended upside down from the ceiling? Who wouldn’t gravitate towards a cavernous building packed to the rafters with boards–long, short, kite, stand-up and even skate. What’s not to love about a place that employs ridiculously knowledgeable staff who can answer just about every board-related question? Hey, I’m just saying, but considering that Hi-Tech tends to win this category fairly often, it looks like our readers noticed. 425 Koloa St., Kahului; 888-717-0683; surfmaui.com @apignataro

They also offer the largest selection of rental SUP boards and paddles on the island. 415 Dairy Rd., Kahului;808-871-4981; hawaiianisland.com @apignataro

POLITICS & ENVIR ONMENT TREVOR KENNEDY - ASIAN / JAPANESE

Best Town To Live In

revor Kennedy of Sweet Trade Tattoo in Honokowai became fascinated by Japanese Irezumi tattoo tradition after learning from some of the best in the tattoo business. Kennedy could draw before he could talk and was always involved in art. After attending the University of Minnesota, he was painting, doing shows and considering a masters program when he met Mike “Rollo” Malone and got a tattoo artist apprenticeship. Rollo was well known as a tattooist and had worked with the legendary Sailor Jerry in Honolulu. “Rollo asked me why I wanted to get in the business and I said, ‘to be an artist,’” says Kennedy. “He said, ‘wrong answer, try again.’ I replied, ‘to make money’ and I was in. It was a lucky guess but I passed the test.” At his shop he recommends coming in and talking to him about getting a custom tattoo. “I don’t consider my work to be traditional, but I understand the myths and stories behind Irezumi and Japanese style,” he says. “That allows me to be the poet.”

Best Scary Public Official

Best County Official

This is a tough one. Kihei isn’t exactly a walkable town–sidewalks are rare and portions of South Kihei Road more closely resemble a street racing course than a local thoroughfare–and it’s pretty much the best definition of “urban sprawl” I’ve yet found in Hawaii. Indeed, much of the South Maui coast is hidden from view behind rows of Kihei condominiums. And yet, so many people are moving to Kihei that land developers are preparing to put up thousands of new homes and some of the largest outlet malls in the state. The reasons, as far as I can tell, are simple: the sun shines pretty much year round in Kihei, the water (at least in the south portion of the town) is clear and clean and the place is home to many of the island’s best bars and nightclubs. Kihei, for all of its problems, is actually a fun place to live. @apignataro

Runner-Up: Lahaina

Linda Lingle Elle Cochran Apparently, more than just MauiTime readers agree that Elle Cochran–who’s been in government a scant two years now–is the best public servant. After just one term of office as a member of the Maui County Council (representing West Maui), Cochran is running unopposed for reelection. She was the lone vote against reopening Hamakuapoko Wells, and recently voted against adding nearly 400 acres of potential development near the Makena Golf Course to the county’s future growth boundaries. She’s also endorsed by the Sierra Club, which makes sense given that Cochran helped found the Save Honolua Coalition. @apignataro Runner-Up: Don Couch

Technically Lingle hasn’t been a public official since she left the Hawaii governor’s office in 2010, but her campaign to replace retiring U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka (D, Hawaii) is close enough for me. Our readers think she’s scary, but there’s a very real chance the state’s voters (who twice elected her governor) will send the Republican who tried to help Hawaii Superferry sail past our state’s environmental laws while killing same-sex marriages to Washington, DC to represent us in the United States Senate. She has long called herself a moderate, but the nearly $30,000 she’s already taken from Goldman Sachs and the $95,000 she’s accepted from Big Oil (according to the Center for Responsive Politics) say otherwise. @apignataro

Best Environmental Issue Sugar Cane Burning Are there other environmental issues these days? Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar (HC&S), which operates the last mill on Maui, grows sugar on 37,000 acres. For much of the year, company workers burn the fields when the cane has grown about two years. This burning releases a great deal of smoke and ash which contain particulates that can exacerbate respiratory disease, especially in children and the elderly. HC&S–a wholly owned subsidiary of the very powerful Alexander & Baldwin Co.–does this because they’ve done it for more than a century, and no one on the island is yet powerful enough to make them stop. If everyone on the island rose up and demanded that they stop, then that might do it, but we’re a long way from that. @apignataro

Runner-Up: Plastic bag ban

Best Community Non-Profit Maui Food Bank Their mission is simple–“[H]elp the hungry in Maui County by collecting and distributing food through community partnerships”–but executing it is anything but. Food, especially on an island out in the middle of the Pacific, is expensive, and Maui Food Bank relies on donations from regular type people. And they need a lot of donations, since they figure they serve about 10,000 people every month–this year, that should total about 1.5 million pounds of food they’ll hand out to poor people across Maui. No one else on the island is doing anything like that volume, and it’s heartening to see that our readers recognize and applaud it. 760 Kolu St., Wailuku; 808-243-9500; mauifoodbank.org @apignataro

Founded in 1980, PWF carries out research, but does its best work educating the public about the threats facing whales and the critical need to keep the whales from going extinct, which remains a real danger. “Pacific Whale Foundation’s vision is to be the people’s environmental organization for research, advocacy, and protection of the world’s whales, dolphins and their ocean habitat,” states the PWF website. Runner-Up: Airport access road

Ahh, this little North Shore town seems forever to be the place to visit, at least where MauiTime readers are concerned. Living there, with its few, tiny homes seems like a dream, but it’s no big deal to drop by the town and see the locals, hippies, Euros and surfers who do spend their days there. Paia also offers plenty of quaint boutiques, cool cafes, some of the whitest white sand beaches on the island and a laid-back vibe that just can’t be found anywhere else. Talk about a no-brainer. Wailuku Main Street Association (WMSA) has been taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants from the County of Maui for years ($2.2 million since 2002, according to The Maui News). And if you’d like to know what the non-proďŹ t organization has been doing with that money, get in line behind the County of Maui Planning Department and the state Attorney General’s ofďŹ ce. Both have spent the better part of this year asking questions of the association and its mercurial executive director Jocelyn Perreira exactly that, without much luck. Now Perreira and WMSA chairman Tom Cannon have long said that everything they do is above board, but when you add up all the former WMSA board members who have been complaining publicly that Perreira refused to give them various ďŹ nancial records that should have been theirs for the asking, the whole thing really starts to smell. @apignataro

Wow, our readers really hold grudges. The Superferry has been dead in the water for a few years now (the U.S. Navy recently bought and renamed the two ferries) but our readers sure don’t forget the lawsuits, service halts, Kauai surfer protests and sanctimonious assurances from Governor Linda Lingle that all was well, even as court after court ruled that the state needed to conduct a proper environmental review. In fact, the sting of the old superferry still hurts so bad that readers let it trump more contemporary troubles as Governor Neil Abercrombie’s refusal to make public the names of his judicial nominees (something even Lingle used to do) and the nearly endless war between the Hawaii State Teachers Association and the state. @ apignataro

Commonly called by their initials, the LC enjoys a great deal of power and authority over the county’s service industry. No one sells booze without the LC’s say-so, and that doesn’t come easy. And not just booze, either: LC inspectors also regulate the noise that emanates from a licensee, the use of obscenities during live entertainment and whether any patrons are dancing outside of specially marked dancing zones. I could get speciďŹ c and talk about the LC’s attempt a few months ago to cut off all live entertainment in the popular Kihei Kalama Village (the “Barmuda Triangleâ€?) after 10pm, but our readers were clear: the LC itself is a political scandal, and it’s tough to disagree. @ apignataro

ustin Yates might have had a career in the music industry but he went in a different direction. “I always loved tattoos,” says Yates. “There was a shop about five blocks from my childhood home I would ride my bike to. I got my first tattoo there, a pin-up girl. That started my lifelong fascination with old school sentiment of Americana of the ‘20s, ‘30s and ‘40s.” Years later, and after several more tattoos, he toured with bands as a manager and worked out of London for a record company. Then he decided to take a career risk and move to San Diego to find a shop where he could apprentice. “I wasted a year mopping floors and squirting green soap at a shitty beach shop before I met Milford Barnes at Seven Seas,” he says. “He hated me at first. It wasn’t until he found out I was from Texas and loved Texas swing that he accepted me.” Yates traveled with Barnes to Maui to tattoo and found a way to stay, tattooing at Island Ink and Evolved art before opening Paia Tattoo Parlor with his wife Leah. “I felt it was too early for me to open a shop,” he says. “I was too young, but too many things were falling into place. It was meant to be. As a tattoo artist it may seem like the art you do is fleeting, but you have to remember your clients will always remember you.” Justin Yates, Paia Tattoo Parlor, 120 Hana Hwy., Paia; 808-579-8515 paiatattooparlor.com

Best New Restaurant Fabiani’s Our readers were pretty clear on this: Lorenzo and Michelle Fabiani have created Maui’s best new restaurant, but they made it look easy with their simple Italian menu and impressive bakery. Breakfast, lunch and dinner, paninis, burgers, linguine and pizzas are all served in this casual and homey space that includes a full bar. Eventually you’ll find yourself stopping by to check the cupcakes of the day or to have a glass of prosecco. 95 E. Lipoa St., Kihei; 808-874-0888; fabianis.com @jenrusso

Best Fish and Chips Mulligans on the Blue Mulligans starts with giant hunks of white fish, covered in a crispy Harp beer batter, and then serves them with giant slab-cut steak fries. It’s a winning combination that our readers have long loved. They make their own tartar sauce, too, and it’s damn good. There is no shame in backing up an order with a Smithwicks Ale or one of their other 10 draught beers. 100 Kaukahi St., Wailea; 808874-113; mulligansontheblue.com @jenrusso

The humongous fish sandwich at Paia Fish Market comes with your choice of fish, their signature coleslaw and, if you like (which you probably will), an order of their tasty shoestring fries. The resulting fish sandwich satisfaction is unparalleled, so it’s no wonder MauiTime readers voted this, the mainstay of mouth-watering fish dishes, the best on the island. 100 Hana Hwy, Paia; 808579-8030; paiafishmarket.com @jenrusso

Annie Neikirk, Southshore Tiki Lounge

Sansei

There are actual mathematical formulae for determining good service (“the amount of personality on display will be inversely proportional to the amount of money you’re spending, not including a base level of cordiality,” according to Slate.com), and I’m pretty confident that the Tiki Lounge’s Annie Neikirk tops them all. I know this not because I’ve done the math (I got into journalism for a reason), but because she always smiles at me and has always gotten my order right. What more do you want? And she never, ever commits that cardinal sin of restaurant service: asking how you’re doing when you’ve got a mouthfull of food. Okay, maybe a couple times, but they were weird accidents of universal coincidence or something. 1913 S. Kihei Rd.; 808-874-6444; southshoretikilounge.com @apignataro

Best Pupus

Sansei has turned more nonbelievers into sushi lovers than any other sushi restaurant in Maui. D.K. Kodama started in a little spot in Kapalua that exploded into a beloved, award-winning restaurant. While the original Kapalua location has grown, new restaurants in Kihei, Hawaii Island and Oahu have made the Sansei name synonymous with sushi and is now recognized as one of the nation’s top 10 sushi restaurants. Incredible rolls like the Kapalua “Butterfry” Roll and the Sansei special, to say nothing of their great late night sushi happy hour, keep Sansei dominating this category year after year. 1881 S. Best Spam Musubi

100 Wines and Sea House Restaurant tied as the best places on the island to dig into some pupu. At the new 100 wines, their sharing menu got you all excited over the exotic European old world charm and the huge wine selection to go with their tartines, macadamia nut brie, and brussel sprouts pupus. But you also love the Sea House Restaurant and its old school Napili charm. Their pupu menu starts at 2pm and features more than 25 little plates like the Maui Beach Balls, sesame seared ahi and the tender barbecued lani ribs, all between $5 and $6. With options like these, we’ll be skipping dinner. 100 Wines: 325 Keawe St., Lahaina; 808-661-6181 / Sea House: Napili Kai Beach Resort, 5900 L. Honoapiilani Rd., Napili; 808-669-1500 @jenrusso

It always comes as a surprise to those new to island culture how much we love our Spam. If you want to see Spam creativity, look no further than the annual Spam cooking contest at the Maui Fair. And everyone who arrives on Maui has to try that old breakfast staple: Spam Musubi. Seriously, I think it’s written in the state constitution. Anyway, the rice and pan-fried Spam (sometimes flavored with teriyaki) that are smashed into a plexiglass rectangular mold and then wrapped in seaweed makes one of the island’s best delicacies. Say what you want, but you have to admit its pretty ono. Located islandwide; foodland.com @jenrusso

While not nearly as big as the Mainland chain, Hawaii Liquor is the island’s superstore for alcohol. Best Fine Dining Mama’s Fish House We love the private beach, open air and gorgeous retro ambiance at Mama’s Fish House in Kuau. Fine dining is taken to a new level at Mama’s–their menu actually tells you what boat caught your fish. Even better is what Chef Perry Bateman does with those beautiful ocean proteins. The menu changes with the seasons but the crab-stuffed fresh fish is so popular that you shouldn’t feel guilty ordering it again and then following it up with the black pearl dessert. Your fine dining experience is amazing from the minute you turn in next to the iconic Mama’s dinghy on Hana Highway and lingers far after the valet hands you your car back. 799 Poho Pl., Kuau; 808-579-8488; mamasfishhouse.com @jenrusso

Best Local Hot Dog Spanky’s Riptide The Spankys dog has not quite been around a year, but it was meticulously researched and tested by foodie and Spanky’s owner Adam Clarke. s a young woman, Rachel Helmich felt lost in the art world. She attended classes at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and at an engineering program but says she “fell into the business” of tattooing. Helmich started as a collector of tatts when she began piercing. Her tattoo artist and future husband Craig Helmich saw potential and encouraged her to apprentice under him at his Pittsburgh shop, Island Avenue Tattoo. “I got off pretty easy learning the business from my husband,” she says. “He was critical about the art, but he didn’t torture me.” Rachel approaches each tattoo like a painting and says she is the people-person at her shop, Maui Tattoo Company, where she tattoos with Craig, Samantha Fairchild and Masao. “If you want a big custom piece just come talk to me,” she says. “I will be happy to help you in the right direction.” Maui Tattoo Company 1945 S. Best Scholastic Athlete Nick Wright Nick Wright can swim. He broke all kinds of Maui County swimming records while competing for Baldwin High School and Seabury Hall High School, as well as Hawaii Swim Club (whom he swam with for a few years). This past March, he placed first in the 100-meter fly at senior sectionals, beating his personal best by almost a second and breaking HSC’s Maui team record. Not only can he swim, he can study, too! Nick Wright graduated from Baldwin High School last spring and will be attending Colorado Mesa University in the fall. Just keep swimming, Nick. @meg_lhazen

Runner-up: Dakota Grossman

Bamboo Forest Hikers, nature-lovers and photographers fall in love with this hike on a regular basis (and if Maui had pandas, they would, too). The trail winds through a forest of the spindly, graceful and hollow bamboo trees. Along the way, you will find a few waterfalls with pools for swimming and cooling off. It’s a hike that reminds you that this is, in fact, paradise. It can get rainy, and is prone to flash-flood warnings, so be sure to check the weather before you go. Hana Hwy. @meg_lhazen

Best Swimming Beach B h Big Beach Big Beach is pretty straightforward. It’s a big beach. The biggest beach on Maui, in fact (almost two-thirds of a mile long and 100 yards wide). But that’s not the only reason why it’s the best swimming beach: the crystal blue water and endless golden sands make it quite a looker, too. Unlike North Shore beaches, Big Beach doesn’t get slammed with wind in the afternoon, making for a pleasant on-shore experience. It’s popular with locals and tourists, swimmers and skimmers. In this case, bigger is better. Makena Beach State Park, South Maui; gohawaii.com/maui @meg_lhazen

It’s ideal for grilling because the distance from the beach itself means you won’t get sand in your buns! So fill up your cooler and head on down. S. For a lot of young surfers, catching waves consumes all free time. Other things, like school, get put on the backburner. But that is not the case with Makawao boy Miles Serafica, who is successful in this balancing act. He’s a 15-year-old surfer sponsored by Alpinestars, Dakine Hawaii and Kazuma Surfboards, and he’s also an honor roll student at King Kekaulike High School. He’s been placing in local surf competitions since he was a seven-yearold grom, and shows no signs of stopping. Makawao; milesserafica. com @meg_lhazen

Best Local Grom Jackson Bunch This is a grom who is a pro-surfer in the making. And he’s eight years old. Coincidentally, the same age I was when I developed a deathly fear of seaweed. But this kid, Jackson Bunch, clearly fears nothing. He’s out there tearing up waves with style and technique far beyond his years. And he’s totally adorable. His skills in the water caught the attention of local surf stars Matt Meola and Albee Layer, who have posted videos of Bunch on their website. Giggle Hill Giggle Hill’s Kalakupua Playground is the one playground to rule them all. Seriously, it is like a castle for small children. But as they say, Rome wasn’t built in a day. This playground took a few years of planning, designing, fundraising (it cost around $240,000) and finally construction, and relied on the work of hundreds of volunteers. It was a huge community effort that paid off big time. Its disabledaccessible and features mosaics and murals, along with slides, climbing structures and everything else you can think of. Competitive swimmers and kids trying to escape the South Maui heat alike are patrons of the Kihei Aquatic Center. With an Olympic-sized pool for swim meets, a training pool for warm-up laps and a kiddie pool for keiki, the Center is great for cooling off and/or practicing your backstroke. And it’s one of the few places where speedos are socially acceptable. So slap on the sunscreen and get your daily doses of Vitamin D and chlorine. Lifeguards are an added safety feature. 303 E. ome of the earliest memories Pride Ink owner and tattoo oo artist Boze Kapoi has of painting are family sessions h watching The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross on PBS with brushes and canvas in hand. Kapoi says his dad was a big fan. While Kapoi has moved on from the happy trees Ross taught, he’s also spent the last decade developing his form of modern Polynesian design and tattoo. A Maui boy who rarely travels, Boze says his mind is constantly working, looking at art everywhere on the island–cars to shirts to logos–always considering how he could improve upon it. “The minute I finish a piece I’m immediately critiquing myself,” he says. “How can I bring that to the next level, I keep pushing myself as an artist.” Island visitors love getting his work, and he also has a good local following. Concerned with running out of skin on the island, Boze also paints canvas, surfboards and shoes with his signature contemporary Polynesian style. He currently has a show hanging at Wailuku Coffee Co. “My clients send me photos of Pride Ink stickers from around the world and text me about upcoming plans to visit two years out,” he says. “I keep in touch. It’s a bonding experience once you sit and tattoo someone.” Boze Kapoi, Pride Ink, 2010 Main Street, Wailuku, Maui Hawaii 96793; prideink.com

Karaoke K a r ao k e Sanseii

What can I say, except that MauiTime readers know how to rock. The Throwdowns have been around a few years now, and they put on an electrifying show. I guess you could label them rock/pop/island music, but what does that tell you? All that can really be said is that their songs “Shake Your Bones,” “Heart Attack” and “Stolen Car” will rock your world. And if you see them live, your senses are really in for a treat. They’ve played on the same stage as Train, The Fray, Panic at the Disco, Sublime with Rome, Steel Pulse, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros and Matisyahu, which kind of gives you an idea of their range. Erin Smith (vocals), Ola Shaw (guitar), Kimo Clark (bass) and Ian Hollingsworth (drums) form one of the best bands in Hawaii, and our readers are justifiably thrilled with them. When I picture an open mic night, I imagine the tortured artist type, skinny and sensitive. Vitamin D deprived, they strike a pose before exiting the stage. What I don’t imagine is a raucous crowd, clamoring for more beer, sand still stuck to their slippers. If the stereotype of an open mic night has intimidated you from ever attending one, I would recommend Haui’s Life’s a Beach. The laid back atmosphere, good food and strong drinks are sure to get the creative juices flowing. You won’t even need to bring your bongo drums. 1913 S. Kihei Rd., 808-891-8010 @angryshortgirl

Best Local Radio DJ Jay J Once upon a time, it took more than a MacBook to make a DJ. It meant indepth music knowledge and a backbreaking amount of equipment. Jay J has DJ-ed for more than 10 years, is part of the longest running radio show on KPMW Wild 105.5, and an emcee for Next Level Entertainment. Now he can add this to his list of accomplishments. I once asked him for the name of a song that “sounded happy and mentioned speakers.” Without even asking me to hum it, he named the song and artist. If that doesn’t qualify him as awesome and amazing, I don’t know what would. 808-3571157 @angryshortgirl

BEST OF MAUI Best Male Musician Be Kanoa Kukaua Is there a more creative, talented, harder-working male musician on the island these days? Yes, Willie K won the Na Hoku award this year for best rock band, and he’s great. But Kanoa is one hell of an entertainer. He’s the main guy in Gomega, but his solo work is fantastic, too. His album Makin Thru the Breakthru is incredible. But go watch Kanoa one Sunday night at Southshore Tiki Lounge in Kihei: the guy is amazing. Hilarious, too. Erin Smith No surprise here, since Erin Smith is the best female musician currently playing on Maui. Her song “Kihei Town” remains an anthem not only for South Maui, but for a whole lifestyle. She and her band, The Throwdowns are getting bigger and doing more gigs throughout the state. They were up for a Na Hoku award this year, but lost out to Willie K (though their playing the actual awards ceremony seriously rocked). Smith still somehow takes time to do afternoon and evening gigs at places like Southshore Tiki Lounge, Cool Cats and Monkeypod Kitchen, though given that she’s also playing gigs in Waikiki and recording new songs in Canada, I can’t imagine it’s easy. @apignataro

Stir and simmer until 140 characters or less. Viola! You’ve either got a piping hot @ReqB or a volatile solution you shouldn’t expose to direct sunlight. At this celebration, there will be educational presentations, entertainment, coconut food booths, a Coconut Cook-Off, canoe rides and a marketplace featuring coconut crafts made on Maui. MAUI FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY BOOKSTORE NOW OPEN AT QUEEN KAAHUMANU CENTER – Maui Friends of the Library is now, apparently, the island’s biggest bookstore chain. They currently have locations in Puunene and Lahaina (at the Wharf Cinema Center) and now they’ve opened their biggest operation yet: a 3,000 square-foot store in the Queen Kaahumanu Center in Kahului. Located over at the Sears end of the mall, the bookstore will eventually offer around 30,000 used books, most priced between $1 and $3 (but don’t expect anywhere near that amount of stock now–they’re doing a formal Grand Opening in October). What’s more, the store will be open seven days a week (Mon.-Sat., 9:30am-7pm; Sun. 10am-5pm). They’re also actively looking for both volunteers and book donations. Queen Ka’ahumanu Center (275 W. Kaahumunu Ave., Kahului). 280-9379 (Anthony Pignataro)

Along with her new stuff at the concert, she’ll also belt out hits like “I’m The Only One” and “Ain’t It Heavy.” Her voice will pull you in, rough you up a bit and make you sing along. She’s just here for one night, so don’t miss out! $35-100. 7:30pm. Castle Theater, MACC (One Cameron Way); 808-2427469; mauiarts.org, melissaetheridge.com.

Sign Language BY CAERIEL CRESTIN CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Consider abundance this week. American culture is based on an economy of scarcity, despite the fact that we’re arguably one of the richest countries in the world. You’d really have to try hard, however, to miss noticing the mounds of blessings heaped at your feet this week, a veritable cornucopia of luck, love and even stuff. What to do with this bounty? Enjoy it, of course—but also spread it around. There are a lot of people who won’t know how lucky they are until you rub their faces in good fortune, and I want you to do it. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) For the most part, your friends tolerate your royal attitude, but they don’t revel in it. They don’t get that you’re not trying to lord anything over anyone. Quite the opposite. You’re just trying to show them another way to be. Avoid getting (more of) a superiority complex. But don’t let the peasants pull you down to their grimy level, either. Simply elevate them to yours. We can all be royalty. In this spirit, issue knighthoods, earldoms and duchies to as many of your friends as want them. It doesn’t have to be lonely at the top. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Have you ever kept a journal? “Why bother?” you may ask. “My incredible memory provides a remarkably accurate record of events.” That may be true, but maintaining a chronicle of your life isn’t the reason I recommend the practice—even an eidetic memory can’t match a journal in painting a clear picture of how your brain works, over time: your invisible patterns and habits of mind. From this thought-map you can extract the technology you need to use yourself more efficiently and happily, to exploit your strengths and neutralize your weaknesses. Understanding yourself is one of your primary goals in life, right? Well, here’s a tool toward that end. Pick up a pen and start writing. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Assuming you’ve experienced past lives, it’s been ages since you spent one as an ant, wolf, flamingo or Egyptian slave. Cooperating in a project that requires submission to (and sometimes death in the name of) the group is as foreign to you as Sanskrit. At least, that’s how it looks. You have a talent for helping people, but not for downplaying your ego. Ants devour whole forests, wolves kill prey much larger than themselves, flamingos confound their enemies through sheer numbers and slaves built inconceivable pyramids. If you can put aside your personal shit–-even for just a week–-and work for “the greater good,” what might you accomplish?

CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You’re like a fast car that’s slammed on the brakes. Suddenly, your insides are battling your outsides. It’s because your dreams have their own inertia. Unless you really do intend to send your ambitions hurtling through the windshield, I suggest you find another way to avoid the jam your wise, practical exterior perceived. Remember, when it comes to wish fulfillment, you can make your own rules. Grow wings and fly over the stalled cars of everyone else’s neglected plans. Or ignore them completely. Just convert your already fat tires into tank treads and forge your own off-road path. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) It’d be hard for a jet surpassing the speed of sound to know what impact its passage had—by the time the sonic blast hit, the plane itself would be long gone. Likewise, the speed of your own movement makes it hard to keep tabs on whom it might affect and in what way. That is, until you hear about it later. Don’t bother acting contrite or feeling guilty—it’s meaningless when everyone knows you would (and will, probably) do it again. Don’t even consider slowing down. You’d be insulting yourself to not use your own talents. Use ’em or lose ’em. So quit looking so remorseful. Just help clean up the shit you messed up, and be on your way. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) As I entered the incredibly quiet meditation chamber, I realized I’d never quite experience true silence again. My ears rang—so loudly that it almost seemed that other people should be able to hear the ringing. It’d been so long since I’d been in a truly silent place that I had no idea how bad my tinnitus had become. This week, you, too, may be surprised by how far an internal movement you set into motion long ago has been allowed to progress, unchecked. This isn’t necessarily bad. For example, after I got over my initially negative reaction to the internal protests of my damaged hearing, I could hear a strange sort of beauty in it: like a distant orchestra of violins, bagpipes and lawnmowers, creating a symphony in honor of my history. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) I’m not here to burst your bubble, Aries. Unlike some other signs, when your head swells to blimp size and bobs above your shoulders like a shiny red balloon, it’s kind of cute. Who wouldn’t be psyched in your place? Surrounded by friends who really adore you, cheered by the success that’s already behind you and the promise of more that looms ahead—it’d be hard for anyone to stay humble under the circumstances. Just don’t forget your sense of humor. In fact, that’s the “muscle” you should be using more than any other. It’s the only thing that’ll make your ego flexible enough to resist deflation when faced with the occasional needle-prick of reality.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) To explain to yourself how you feel this week, imagine you’re snorkeling in Thailand. Suddenly the way you seem able to exist only at the fringes of a colorful, serene and exotic world makes at least a little more sense. So you can only thrust your face into the realm you crave, still connected to your old reality through a stubby breathing tube. Just remember: the limits of your participation are only one-way. You can carry the world you can barely enter completely inside you, like a precious gem that refracts light and changes how you see and react to everything else.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) This week I picture you doing one of two things. You could be conducting a grand orchestra of nature: Winds howl! Clouds sweep majestically across the sky! Sun trumpets through in brassy spears of light! Or, you could just sit on your ass, watching nature documentaries and the Weather Channel. Don’t be lame. This week’s a golden opportunity to forget about Who You’ve Been and practice being Who You Want To Be. Practice is key for a creature of habit like you. Do it enough, and Who You Want To Be will be Who You’ve Been before you know it.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) I wish I could just write you a love letter every week, full of praise and adoration. You deserve it. But I fear it would make you complacent, unable or unwilling to grasp the opportunities that will lead you to fulfilling your true potential. That wouldn’t be the best way to love you, would it? So instead I deliver these well-intentioned kicks in the butt. How could I not, when you’re so close to living out the dream you first had years ago? Here’s the steel tip of my boot contacting your pert derriere: every single thing that happens this week is an opportunity. Consider each event—”good” or “bad”—a rung on the ladder leading to your goal. Start climbing.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Once someone notices a wasp in her midst, it’s hard to not pay attention to it, or deal with it in some way. It’s hard to feel comfortable sharing a room with a capricious, stinging insect. You sometimes have the same difficulty going unnoticed. In this way, your compelling presence occasionally works against you. However you may be thrilled to discover that, this week, your personal power is less like those dramatic beasts that are other sign’s symbols—like scorpions, lions, and bulls–-and more like those creatures that know how to blend in: chameleons, leopards, fawns and con artists among them.
