BLAME THE VOTERS! I am appalled that your newspaper would list Big Beach as the Best Swimming Beach on Maui (Best of Maui, July 19, 2012). Are you truly unaware of the number of people that have been paralyzed at Big Beach? We have had so many patients young, old, tourists and residents that will never walk again after being tossed by a wave at Big Beach. Your article lists only the beauty and none of the dangers. How many tourists will go to Big Beach and go home on a stretcher? I think you need to interview some of our ER physicians and our neurosurgeon Dr. Thomas Rogers who I am sure would be delighted to give you an ear full. In fact, I think you need to do a front page article on this and also surfer’s myelopathy. -Victoria Dennis, FNP-BC, Maui Memorial Medical Center

EH BRAH! Kudos to for recently making the annual Eh Brah Special Issue (July 12, 2012) all about traffic-related submissions. Reckless and dangerous driving is rampant here on the island. It was important to show the utter lack of respect so many people have for the law and for other drivers. Instead of just publishing the rants, you could have one-upped the article by offering solutions to the problems. Here’s one suggestion: Install cameras at every intersection and send automatic, expensive traffic tickets to all those who run red lights. Maui County would not only make a lot of money, but they’d be praised for doing something to insure the safety of all drivers. After a few hundred dollars in repeat tickets, I venture to guess drivers would change their ways and red-light running would no longer be an issue on Maui. -Anonymous, via email

WHEN SKATERS ATTACK OTHER SKATERS “From experience I tell people if you’re over 20, don’t start skating?” (Letters, July 3, 2012). Wow, Jon Unitas (seriously, couldn’t he come up with a more original name than the ‘70s footballer?) must be some world class skater... and under the age of 20 as well? What this doof doesn’t get is that most of us “old guys” aren’t “starting” to skate, most of us are die hard skaters from back in the day when Tony Alva was ripping up pools in SoCal and urethane wheels just replaced the old “clay/ball bearing wheels.” I’m an old dude who still skates. I grew up in SoCal, riding empty pools, homemade plywood ramps and the L.A. County aqueduct system. In the late ‘70s, skateparks popped up all around our area. Yeah, I’m not as crazy as I used to be–I mainly longboard the streets of Wailuku, but I have two young sons who shred the Keopuolani park, Kihei park and the new Lahaina park, and they can hold their own against some of the older teen riders. They’re taught to respect everyone in the park. Besides, us old guys are usually the ones who work for a living and our tax dollars help pay for these parks. So instead of badmouthing other skaters, maybe you should thank them because your prepubescent, freeloading, no job-having butt surely didn’t pay for the park. -Anonymous, via email

There are elected officials who give eloquent speeches. There are others with tremendous legal minds who put forth all sorts of visionary legislation, and those who've mastered political maneuvering and get their colleagues to support just about anything. Then there's Joe Pontanilla, who basically just votes for what the big developers and unions want. Born in the Puunene plantation hospital in 1942, he grew up in a segregated workers camp, did a stint in the army, and worked at GTE for 34 years. Pontanilla has also never lost an election. In fact, Pontanilla was part of that infamous little dinner that Alexander & Baldwin threw at Mama’s Fish House back in 2006. It was an informal (and unpublicized) gathering for some of A&B’s top executives and their sympathetic friends on the Maui County Council (those members who weren’t invited treated the snub as a kind of honor in its own right). Pontanilla later told a Maui News reporter that he had paid for his and his wife’s meals and that conversation merely concerned banal subjects like “Las Vegas, community service, home life, vacations. Whether the termed-out Pontanilla can translate his Maui political strength into a run for a state House seat remains to be seen.

Talk of the Island

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO Seriously, why is this notion that the county ought to hold public hearings like these in the early evening hours still controversial?

SPEAKING OF HONUALUA...

Nothing to see here, folks– please keep working

WHILE YOU WERE AT WORK THIS WEEK... There are a couple county hearings from earlier this week that you should know about. On Monday, July 23, the County Council General Plan Committee met at 9am to discuss the West Maui section of the Maui Island Plan Growth maps (which, oddly enough, don’t include the 1,500-plus homes slated to go into Olowalu). Considering that most of you probably worked at that time, it’s unlikely many of you actually made it. Ditto the Tuesday, July 24 Maui Planning Commission hearing (also at 9am, natch) on the long-awaited Honualua project. We’re talking thousands of homes and tens of thousands of square feet of commercial development that will be in discussion. Too bad most residents couldn’t make it, because the stuff is kind of important. Of course, given the fact that four of the nine Maui Council Council members (nearly a quorum!) are running unopposed in the upcoming election, it’s easy to think that most people on Maui are pretty happy just letting them make these kinds of decisions on their own. Of course, that doesn’t take away from the fact that all of these development projects represent pretty much everything that’s wrong with the build-out of Maui. These are massive projects, the former packed with commercial, retail and residential construction. They’ve been discussed by planners for years, but it’s nearly impossible for residents who must work for a living to get a feel for their true impact on island life. The Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Honualua especially is a sprawling, technical, monster of a planning document. Maui Tomorrow somehow managed to break it up into four giant PDF files, but the idea of working people sitting down at a computer to read hundreds, if not thousands of pages of charts and legalese is laughable. For those few who have read through the

EIS reports on projects like Honualua, and take the ambiguities and contradictions they find in them very seriously, it’s impossible to discuss such projects with a straight face. A few days ago longtime smart growth advocate Lucienne de Naie emailed me about the July 23 and July 24 hearings, and it was impossible for her to discuss something like the Honualua EIS without becoming sarcastic: “The report concludes that it would be impossible to preserve any more than 40 acres of the recommended 130 acres [of] native flora and fauna, existing habitat and cultural site area because this would make the housing in the other 82 percent of the property ‘too crowded.’ For example, if the 504 single family luxury homes had to be located on lots that were one third of an acre (14,600 sq ft) instead of half an acre (20,000 sq ft) probably the whole project would fail. Right?” I can remember clear back to 2007, when residents really had to agitate then-County Council Land Use Committee Chairman/current mayoral aide Mike Molina into holding one evening-hours hearing on Honualua.

Did you know that about a quarter of the land set aside for Irvine-based Eclipse Development Group’s proposed–and insanely controversial–Kihei mega malls are for workforce housing units necessitated by the Honualua project? See, the law is a funny thing: the Wailea 670 developers have to build housing accessible to those of us not making a few hundred grand a year, but they don’t actually have to build it in the Wailea 670 project itself. So they decided to build them further north on Piilani Highway, over where those giant outlets and mega malls are going. Because as we all know, working people love living next door to giant commercial centers. I was reminded of this while reading of the brave stance taken by state Office of Planning Director Jesse Souki (state House Speaker Emeritus Joe Souki is his cousin) in the fight over the proposed Kihei mega malls. According to the July 17 Maui News, Souki has filed papers stating that the plan to build all those big commercial outlets is a substantial and unwarranted divergence from the land’s light industrial zoning: “There is a sufficient basis for concluding that the currently proposed project is not in substantial compliance with representations made in the original petition,” he said in the filing, according to the paper. But have no fear–Eclipse says their plan always included massive commercial development, and that whole “light industrial” thing was just a concept. Indeed, “the LUC did not include any condition limiting the property to any particular use,” said Eclipse attorney Jonathan Steiner in court filings, according to the July 20 Maui News. See? And we all thought zoning in this state actually meant something specific– residential homes go in “residential” zones, tilt-up industrial buildings go in “light industrial” zones and so on. Silly us.

ERI YOSHIDA MOONLIGHTS AS BAT GIRL? So last Thursday night a bunch of us from the MauiTime ohana decided to take in a Na Koa Ikaika Maui baseball game. It was “MauiTime Night” after all, which allowed us to promote our annual Best of Maui issue. Judging by the few hundred faces we saw in the grandstand at Ichiro “Iron” Maehara Stadium in Wailuku, it was very gratifying to see so many people joining us.

Eri Yoshida, Hall of Fame Batgirl?

FIRST WOMAN: “You should totally take that and put it up on Facebook.” SECOND WOMAN: “How am I supposed to get a picture of her ass?” THIRD WOMAN: “When she bends over next time and shows her undies, point the phone that way and just take a picture of your drink.”

We had a blast, as we usually do at ball games, but we couldn’t help but notice player number 4–Eri Yoshida–acting as bat girl for the Ikaika. That’s right–the famed “Knuckleball Princess,” who has won more games as a female pitcher than anyone else in the history of American professional baseball and already has a spot in Cooperstown, New York. She’s in the Baseball Hall of Fame right now, while still playing for the Ikaika, and yet during the game she was acting as the bat girl, fetching bats after her teammates lined one onto the field. We knew she wasn’t scheduled to pitch that night, but we couldn’t help but look at each other and say, “huh?” So this morning I emailed Chris Osgood of the Osgood Marketing Group, which handles publicity for the team, and asked whether being the bat girl was part of her job. “It’s not part of her job,” Osgood emailed back. “LOL. She asked to help out. It’s just another example of her humility and ‘team first’ attitude.” Like we’re going to argue with that. ■

LOCAL PLUGS BY JEN RUSSO

FEED MY SHEEP MOVES TO KAHULUI As founder Joyce Kawakami humbly describes her Feed My Sheep operation, she almost downplays the significance of her idea back in 1999 to start distributing food out of the trunk of her car to hungry folks. Feed My Sheep is different than some of the kitchens and church pantries in that they distribute bags of food to the needy in five different locations throughout the island every week, and once a month in Hana. They pass out bags of food that are packaged to last about a week, and Kawakami says they currently serve about 1,500 people every week. “Give them food! she says. “I started this as a youth leader. There were hungry teens. I bought them food and snuck them groceries so others wouldn’t know. But word got out. Then I started loading the trunk of my car with groceries. Next I had to get a truck. Now we have a beautiful fleet of donated trucks and locations in Kahului, Kihei, Lahaina, Haiku and Hana. I am so thankful to those that have partnered with us and donated to Feed My Sheep. We fed over 9,000 people in 2011. They recently changed their Central Maui food distribution site from a corner of Vineyard Avenue and Church Street in

ADULT SWIM! Are you an adult who still doesn’t know how to swim? Even here on Maui, which is surrounded by a vast ocean, adults who lack an ability to swim aren’t as rare as you might think. According to a Red Cross survey published last year, one in five people aren’t strong swimmers, yet most summer activities are planned around the water. Maui swim coach Janet Renner says this can be quite an embarrassment at best, while the Red Cross says it can be a drowning hazard at worst. Renner will provide swim lessons for any adults who’ve always wanted to swim, or would like to overcome their fear of the water. The session starts on July 30 and runs Monday and Wednesday through Aug. 13. Classes are taught at Renner’s private pool, and the cost is $100. “A majority of the folks overcome their fear of the water by expanding their awareness and understanding about the basics on what to do when in the water, says Renner. “They can overcome this if they want to. I help by providing a compassionate safe environment, encouraging them by being right there with them as they go through the step-by-step process of overcoming their fears of the water. Renner says she has PHOTO BY U.S. NAVY - SEAMAN ORLANDO RAMOS

Wailuku (where they were located for eight years) to Christ the King Church in Kahului. Distribution takes place from 9:30am until noon. The food is stored and processed at their Feed My Sheep site in Pu’unene, an area with land and containers donated by Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar and their parent company Alexander & Baldwin. There they bag the food and load delivery trucks. Other partners include the Maui Food Bank, churches that donate food, farmers who give fresh produce and other individuals and businesses in the community. “The CDC has identified a link between poverty and obesity, says Kawakami. “We only see this in the US. Processed foods are the worst for you yet they are the cheapest. Right now our focus is to provide more fresh food and less processed foods. Last Thursday, we gave out 4,000 pounds of pineapple and papaya. “We love what we do, Kawakami continues. “Our staff is college educated and dedicated to feeding people. We don’t make a lot of money doing this but this is our passion. We have about 400 volunteers. Most of the food is donated, but some is purchased. Kawakami says Feed My Sheep will be bringing in a container of rice soon. She says feeding homeless people is tougher since they can’t cook rice or beans. She tries to give them fresh fruits and veggies that can be eaten raw, but sometimes processed foods as well. Kawakami estimates they hand out around 15,000 pounds of food every week.

NEWS OF THE WEIRD BY CHUCK SHEPARD

OUR NEWEST HUMAN RIGHT Of the world’s seven billion people, an estimated 2.6 billion do not have toilet access, and every day a reported 4,000 children die from sanitation-related illnesses. But in May, in Portland, Ore., Douglas Eki and “Jason Doctolero were awarded $332,000 for wrongful firing because they complained about being inconvenienced at work by not having an easily available toilet. Menzies Aviation had arranged for the men to use facilities at nearby businesses at their Portland International Airport site, but the men said they felt unwelcome at those places and continued to complain (and use buckets). One juror said afterward that having easy access to a toilet was a “basic human right, citing the “dignity [of] being able to go to the bathroom within 30 seconds or a minute. Said Doctolero, “Hopefully, no one will have to suffer what I went through.

HOT CALAMARI ACTION A 63-year-old woman in South Korea bit into a portion of squid and later felt “bug-like organisms moving around in her mouth. According to doctors at the National Center for Biotechnology Information in Bethesda, Md., writing in a recent paper, the squid had probably expelled its spermatophores as if it were attempting insemination. (When squid is eaten in the West, the internal organs have been removed, but apparently not in South Korea.) A scientist who has worked with squid

HIGH TECH MEETS ADULT DIAPERS A start-up venture in Singapore announced in June that it has developed an adult diaper made of “Sofshell, a substance that hardens on contact and redistributes weight–so that if seniors fall on their rear ends, the impact will be absorbed with a lesser risk of broken bones. One of the developers demonstrated by dropping a bowling ball on a cellphone protected by the material, and the phone suffered not a scratch.

IT’S DANGEROUS BEING A MALE SPIDER Researchers at the National University of Singapore described, in a recent issue of the journal Biology Letters, how a certain species of male tropical spider seemingly improves its chances of successful mating by castrating itself after releasing sperm. The scientists hypothesize that testes-removal makes the male nimbler and better able to trick and outflank competitor males that attempt to reinseminate the same females. Improving their strategic mobility also enables the male to avoid being killed by the female, which is yet another hazard in the spider-mating process.

CHIMP WAR! Scientists from Lund University’s Primate Research Station Furuvik in Sweden announced in May that they had evidence that chimpanzees are able to delay using weapons they encounter, hide them and retrieve them later for use against “foes. The weapons were stones and chunks of concrete, and the foes were visitors to the zoo who annoyed the chimps. According to the researchers, the 33-year-old chimp Santino also took pains to hide the weapons in locations where they could be accessed easily for the element of surprise against the visitors. ■chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1606n3

ou’re here on vacation–great! You’re at the beach with your wife– awesome! It’s a weekend and all the families are out in full force. And here you are, on your honeymoon and what’s the first thing you do when you settle down in the sand? Light up a big fat cigar?!?! Look, I have nothing against a quick cigarette smoke on da beach (as long as you throw away the butts) or even a little greens behind the bushes, but a two-hour cigar around families and non smokers is taking it too far brah. And what was up with you glaring at all the people looking at you? You were on a public beach, not a private club. Will you please go home now? ■

Big

Waste

By Anthony Pignataro

Large capacity cesspools became illegal seven years ago, but the EPA only recently discovered that the Kihei Marketplace has one. Even if you don’t have one, here’s why this should worry you.

10 JULY 26, 2012

S

pecies extinction. Ocean acidification. Rising sea levels. Invasive species. Solid waste disposal. Land development. Aquifer depletion. Sugar cane burning. Energy conservation. Superfund sites. The list of environmental problems facing Hawaii (much less the rest of the planet) seems endless as it is, and I’m not even scratching the surface with the above accounting. Because when you do scratch the surface, so to speak, and start digging deep (again, so to speak), you find yet another pressing, serious environmental danger that plagues Hawaii: Large capacity cesspools. And no, I’m not joking. Just ask Mr. and Mrs. Yong Su Ko. They own the company 1975 South Kihei Road LLC, which operates the Kihei Marketplace in South Maui. They’re learning firsthand about the troubles with big cesspools. But more on them later. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) website defines an LCC as a cesspool “that discharges sanitary waste with human waste and serves: (1) a multiple dwelling; OR (2) a non-residential location with the capacity to serve 20 or more persons per day” (the LCC regulations specifically exempt those cesspools hooked up to single-family homes). The danger is simple: “Raw, untreated sewage is discharged directly into the ground, where it can contaminate oceans, streams and ground water by releasing disease-causing pathogens and nitrates,” states the EPA website on cesspools. It doesn’t take a scientist to see the potential for trouble there. “Anyone who’s gone snorkeling knows that there are freshwater seeps,” said Rob Parsons, the County of Maui’s Environmental Coordinator. “It’s pretty clear that what happens in the ground can

WHAT KIHEI MARKETPLACE MUST DO According to the EPA’s June 19 letter, Yong Su Ko and his wife will have to do a great deal to end Kihei Marketplace’s cesspool problems. Here’s the list of actions the EPA wants them to schedule: • if possible, plan to connect the property to the county’s sewer system; • if needed, hire a contractor to design an individual wastewater system (IWS); • give your IWS plans to the state Department of Health (DOH) for approval; • start building the IWS; • finish the IWS and give a copy of the construction inspection report to the DOH; • get final approval from the DOH on the new IWS; • close the cesspool; • give the EPA copies of all correspondence with the DOH on the new IWS. SOURCE: EPA

“Raw, untreated sewage is discharged directly into the ground, where it can contaminate oceans, streams and ground water by releasing disease-causing pathogens and nitrates.” make its way to the ocean.” Scott Rollins, an official with the County of Maui’s Department of Environmental Management, agreed that the sludge in cesspools is a significant problem. “It’s probably 10 times the strength of the sewer system so it leaches into the soil,” he said. “It’s not an immediate concern, but [the sludge] gets in the ground eventually and will find its way into the ocean.” What makes matters much worse is that federal officials say there are “thousands” of these things throughout Hawaii, potentially leaching sewage into groundwater. Turns out that LCCs are used “more widely” here than in any other state. “The situation is that there are thousands of these large capacity cesspools in the state of Hawaii,” said David Albright, the manager of the EPA’s Ground Water Office for Region 9, which includes Hawaii. “There are thousands and thousands of these.” That’s in the state. Rollins said he had no idea how many LCCs exist in the county. “Putting a number on it would be difficult,” he said, though he added

that most would probably be in the Upcountry area. That’s part of the reason why the situation at the Kihei Marketplace interested me. It’s not Upcountry, but in the heart of Kihei, right on South Kihei Road across from Kalama Beach Park. And there’s a large capacity cesspool there. I know this because on June 19, the EPA sent Yong Su Ko, the Kihei Marketplace owners, a letter saying that they need to remove their LCC as soon as possible. The June 19 letter asked Yong to send a detailed schedule of how exactly he was going to replace the LCC to the EPA office in San Francisco no later than July 5 (see “What Kihei Marketplace Must Do” for more on this). The letter ended with a vague threat: “Your compliance with these requests, and your efforts to properly close the LCC in accordance with your proposed schedule, are relevant to EPA’s consideration of any potential enforcement action.” In case you didn’t know, LCCs have been illegal since April 5, 2005. That was more than seven years ago. In addition, no new large capacity cesspool construction

could take place in the US after the year 2000, but owners of existing cesspools were given until 2005 to close them and either tie their buildings into the sewer system or find some other legal way to dispose of the sludge. It’s unclear why it took the fed–or the state or county, for that matter–to move against Kihei Marketplace. At least one neighbor says the EPA action isn’t a surprise at all. “I’m tired of smelling sewage there for the last three years,” said Dale Castleton, who owns a plant nursery around the corner from the Kihei Marketplace. “I saw them pumping it out a few weeks ago.” (As a side note, Castleton knows a great deal about environmental non-compliance: in 2005, he ran afoul of the county for failing to deal with a massive coqui frog infestation at his nursery. After bad publicity, including an article in MauiTime, he began working with the Maui Invasive Species Committee and today operates a completely coqui-free business.) In any case, the EPA isn’t shy about slapping considerable fines on those found out of compliance. Two years ago, the EPA fined Fred Romanchek, who owns the Kula Lodge, $51,000 for operating LCCs at the restaurant. At the same time, the agency slapped $110,000 in fines on Gay & Robinson on Kauai for failing to shut down 40 large capacity cesspools. Albright wouldn’t comment specifically on what actions the agency may take against Kihei Marketplace or why they’re only going after the company now, but he did say that the actions of the owners–how quickly they act on warnings, the time they’ve been out of compliance, etc.– will play a big part in determining whether the EPA goes down the enforcement road. As for the Yongs, fixing the problem may not be so simple–or cheap. According to Parsons, coming into compliance could cost “$20,000 or more.” Not only do they have to hire contractors to remove the cesspool and build either a sewer hookup or a legal septic tank, but they have to obtain a variety of county permits, which could involve serious legal costs–and that’s all assuming they don’t get fined for being non-compliant for seven years. When contacted for comment, an attorney listed as 1975 South Kihei Road LLC’s registered agent said that the Yongs are working diligently on fixing the problem. “I just spoke with the property manager, and he said that they are aware of the situation and are working to rectify it as soon as possible,” said Honolulu real estate attorney Norman Cheng when I called for comment. “They hope to get it resolved soon.” When I asked if I could speak directly with the property manager, Cheng demurred, saying “his English is not the best.” ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1606L

t was a Friday, and while there wasn’t a formal special occasion, I arrived early. I wanted quality time with the Pineapple Grill rock stars. I wasn’t disappointed, and found new Executive Chef Isaac Bancaco gearing up for the usual Friday crowd. They apparently do swift business from the 5:30pm seating straight through to 10 pm. Chris Kaiwi, the restaurant’s managing partner, was busy briefing the staff, while Bancaco took a moment to show me around his showcase kitchen. Now this coming Friday, July 27, will not be a usual night. That’s when Pineapple Grill

celebrates seven years as one of Kapalua’s most beloved restaurants. They’ll offer a special seven-course tasting menu available for seven days at $77. Bancaco, formerly from Humuhumunukunukuapua’a at the Grand Wailea (Chef Mike Lofaro accepted Bancaco’s old post), has phased in a new menu for Pineapple Grill over the last month, and this will be a chance to really show it off. “My management team and staff and their loyalty and commitment are the reason we have attained so many of our goals here,” says Kaiwi. “All of us are looking forward to providing a great dining experience for many years to come. This celebration seven-course menu is our way of saying thank you and showcasing Chef Bancaco’s new dishes.” Changing the menu at Kapalua’s iconic Pineapple Grill restaurant was tricky, since many of the restaurant’s regulars are Kapalua Golf Club members at the neighboring

We have to listen because they decide what is good.” Bancaco’s second nature is to seek sustainability as the foundation of his kitchen operation. Dinner and a Show It’s your last chance to catch Maui Onstage’s special dinner packages with The Producers BY JEN RUSSO

I

’ve always been a fan of community theater, though from a distance. I’m an expert in entertainment on Maui, but when it came to writing about productions in theater, I felt like I was missing something. So for my recent dinner and show outing to see Maui Onstage’s The Producers–Mel Brooks’ famous play about a theater company who decides that it can make more money with a flop than a hit–I decided to bring along my friend Angie Thompson, who has a long community theater resume, and then pick her brain about the theater world. Maui Onstage has organized neat dinner packages to upgrade your night out at the Iao Theater in Wailuku. You can choose dinner from Bistro Casanova, Cafe O’Lei and Wailuku Coffee Company. Each spot has prix fixe menu items, and it's all paid for in your theater ticket. It really made it smooth and easy. Thompson and I met at Bistro Casanova. The reservation was set for 5:30pm so you have time to enjoy your food before the 7:30pm show. Plus it’s still happy hour, and their carafes of mojitos and margaritas are just $5. We hit the margarita racket and then I asked my first question.

“Why do companies like Maui Onstage set off for Market Street. The buzz at the box office was boisterous put on so many musicals? “They’re crowd-pleasers, she said. “People when we arrived. Maui Onstage has a new seat reservation system in which you can choose love to hear the musicals. Dascoulias says that all their musicals feature a live orchestra, and the entire 32-member (volunteer!) cast has been working on the show since May. “The audiences have loved the show, Dascoulias later said. “As they are leaving most of them say, ‘Funniest play I’ve ever seen,’ ‘Wow, you’ve really outdone yourselves–again’ and ‘We laughed so hard we cried.’ It has been a success, and the cast is loving the energy from the audience. This weekend will be your last chance to see The Producers. She has worked as a photojournalist and professional photographer for the last 20 years, and her work has been featured in international publications including Time, Newsweek, People, the New York Times, USA Today and Rolling Stone. This workshop will explore the role of a filmmaker in documenting a community, as well as camera techniques, audio and shot composition. Open to the public. Free. 6-7:30pm. Akaku Center (333 Dairy Rd., Kahului); 808-871-5554; akaku.org.

‘JOURNEY OF THE UNIVERSE’ – Apparently, Albert Einstein once said, “Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former.” Guess not everyone’s born a genius. But I digress... here’s a chance to learn about our mysterious universe at a screening of the Emmy-winning documentary Journey of the Universe. The film covers topics ranging from the Big Bang, the human genome and humanity’s relationship to the Earth. The film will be followed by a discussion with the film’s writer/producer Mary Evelyn Tucker and Dr. Pualani Kanaka‘ole Kanahele. Kanahele is a Hawaiian cultural practitioner, leading Hawaiian creation myth scholar and award-winning author. This event is Part Two of the “Man/Woman and Nature Series: Four public conversations on the relationship of humans to the natural world,” presented by the MACC and Ala Kukui. $10. 6pm. McCoy Studio, Maui Arts & Cultural Center (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 808-242-SHOW; mauiarts.org.

THURSDAY, JULY 26 HANA RECYCLING – If you have junk in the trunk, why not recycle it this weekend in Hana? The Community Work Day Program, with support from the County of Maui, has organized a three-day recycling event at the Hana landfill for items that the facility doesn’t accept. You can bring stuff like scrap metal, appliances, car batteries and tires (there’s a $5 fee for each tire you recycle) to their staging area at the landfill. Then CWD takes your stuff to the proper recycling facilities. But they won’t take cars, furniture, propane tanks, computers, TVs or electronics. Elderly and disabled residents can call CWD for help transporting items to the staging area. Call or email CWD for more info. Free. July 26-28, 8am-2:30pm. Hana Landfill (35 Hana Hwy.); 808-877-2524; info@cwdhawaii.org.

PAJAMA JAM – Poetry, pizza and pajamas. I can’t think of a better combination. Come over to Casanova in your finest nighties for an evening of slam poetry brought to you by Maui Slam. Poets need to sign up by 9:45pm for this no-rules slam, and the winner will take home $100. Surfers, waves and sea life are the subjects of her collection, “The Art of the Ocean.” Morakis hopes that by using the ocean as her theme she will bring awareness to the problems that our delicate ocean ecosystem faces: pollution, over-fishing and dying coral reefs. The opening reception will feature live music from Upcountry Celtic, live art demonstrations and free refreshments. “The Art of the Ocean” will be on display until Aug. 23. Free. 6:30-9pm. You can see some of them at “Multimedia Originals,” the last event of Ebb and Flow Arts’ North South East West Festival 2012. The show will feature new stage compositions by Peter Swanzy, Michael Takemoto, Bob Werhman and Tony Walholm. SATURDAY, JULY 28 ART=MIXX – This Saturday, Art=Mixx pays homage to the days of early artistic media: Film Noir, OP art (i.e. optical illusions) and performance art. Think back to the days before color TV, when life was in black and white. The event will feature five DJs, six VJs, interactive and performance art. The dress code is black and white, and the best costume will win a prize. The Art=Mixx folks have a lot of surprises up their sleeves, so you’ll have to stop by and experience it for yourself. One thing we know is that Three’s Bar & Grill will cater, and it will be delicious. ArT=Mixx is presented by the MACC, and this event is being produced by Gallery Director Neida Bangerter, Trevor Arnholt and Toben Lindell. 21+. Free. 10pm. Maui Arts & Cultural Center (One Cameron Way, Kahului); mauiarts.org.

IAO VALLEY 10K – Join the Valley Isle Road Runners for a 10K race this Saturday! Check out the Youth Art Exhibit and maybe take a piece home from the Affordable Art Sale or one of the courtyard artist vendors. Kids can even make their own work of art, which is especially great if you’re convinced that little Johnny is the next Picasso. Tour the beautiful grounds, hang out and bask in the creative energy. Free. 10am-2pm. Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center (2841 Baldwin Ave., Makawao).

CUT CHEMIST – Cut Chemist, internationally renowned electronic music artist, is bringing his sound experiments to Paia for one night only. He first entered the music scene as a founding member of rap group Jurassic 5 and Grammywinning Latin funk outfit Ozomatli. In 2006, “What’s the Altitude,” a song off of his first solo release, became one of the most viewed videos on YouTube at the time and helped put him on the map as a solo artist. Since then, his sound has been evolving as he continues to push the boundaries of live DJing. His 2010 concept mix, Sound of the Police, showcases his passion for Ethiopian, Colombian, Sudanese and Afro-Brazilian sounds. The name Cut Chemist does well to describe this artist’s skill in putting together diverse musical styles and creating something altogether original. Not to mention that he resembles a mad scientist at work in his live performances. $25 pre-sale, $30 at door. 9pm. The Kids Are All Right Considering that they’re still in high school, the guys who make up Visibly Shaken are really good BY MEGAN HAZEN (L to R) Evan Phillips, Tristan Rucynski, Noa Castleton, Luke Broadbent

E

very high school has a band or two. And by “band,” I mean a group of friends who recently learned to play an instrument and enjoy an occasional “jam sesh.” Maybe they play out of a garage, at a school dance or at talent shows. Oh, and one other thing these bands have in common: they’re usually terrible. A lively interpretation of “Stairway to Heaven” can be interesting, but doesn’t save them from sucking. But every now and then, the planets align, allowing a band of high schoolers to form that actually sounds really good. Visibly Shaken is one such band. The members include teens Luke Broadbent and Tristan Rucynski–who both play lead and rhythm guitar as well as sing–Noa Castleton on drums and Evan Phillips on bass. Rucynski and Phillips go to Kihei Charter School while Broadbent and Castleton attend St. Anthony. The young’uns started playing at the tender age of 12 when Broadbent, Rucynski and Castleton picked up instruments and started to jam together. The three admit that, in the beginning, the band painfully lacked talent. It wasn’t surprising, considering that they lacked a singer and bassist. Things weren’t looking good, but then Phillips joined on bass and Broadbent and Rucynski started singing. Now, after a few years of honing their sound, Visibly Shaken truly rocks. Visibly Shaken’s sound is a “weird collision of different genres,” says Broadbent, with “lots of ska and punk influences.” They’re a rock group first and foremost, influenced by bands like Nirvana, Pixies and Kings of Leon. You can find them playing in front of Giannotto’s during Wailuku First Fridays, at local restaurants or at private parties. But the first time I saw them play was at the Seabury

Hall Craft Fair in May. As I sat on the grass facing the stage eating some bomb short ribs, I was immediately impressed. They clearly possessed talent far beyond their years, as well as great taste in music (they covered songs by the Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes and The Clash). So the next time I attended the Wailuku First Friday town party, I sought them out at Giannotto’s. There, an audience gathered in front of Visibly Shaken was a testament to the band’s growing appeal. The table closest to the band held a group of teenage girls, with the band’s moms holding court at another nearby table. All around, people of a variety of ages wandered from the Market Street festivities and stopped to listen. They say their favorite gig was at Stella Blues, where they played with Vince Esquire, Shawn Michael and Cloris Leachman’s son. “[It was] just straight up adrenaline and literal awesomeness,” emailed the group, which is still attending high school so they can get away with saying stuff like that. They have nine original songs (also awesome), and they spent a weekend this month recording them at W.A.M.! Studios, owned by Ola Shaw of The Throwdowns (they should release the album near the end of summer). They’ve played two recorded shows at Mana’o, which you can listen to on their website (visiblyshakenmaui.webs.com). You can still catch these guys before they make it big (and before school’s back in session) on July 28 at Three’s Bar & Grill in Kihei. $5. July 28, 9-10:30pm. Three’s Bar & Grill (1945 S. The Batman Returns The Dark Knight Rises is a great, but heavy, conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s trilogy BY BARRY WURST II

The Dark Knight Rises ★★★★★

Rated PG 13 / 164 Min.

uring my childhood, one of my favorite spots on Maui was Compleat Comics in Kahului, which was where I met Batman, Groo the Wanderer and (my favorite) Howard the Duck for the first time. In 1989, when Tim Burton’s first Batman film opened, the store had a giant “Batman Headquarters” sign outside that was stolen, then returned (and no, The Joker was not held responsible). It was my first introduction to how intense Batman fans truly are. Over the years, I’ve had heated arguments with Bat-fans over The Dark Knight, the megapopular 2008 sequel that I wasn’t in love with. Take away Heath Ledger’s triumphantly disturbing performance and a few great action sequences, the story was cluttered, the editing messy and the running time endless. I had no

such problems with The Dark Knight Rises, the wonderful, surprising and emotionally satisfying final film in the trilogy from writer/ director Christopher Nolan. After emerging from a Howard Hugheslike hiatus, Bruce Wayne (played by Christian Bale) forms a shaky alliance with a cold blooded cat burglar named Selina (Anne Hathaway) and takes on a monstrous terrorist named Bane (played by Tom Hardy). Early reports surfaced that audiences have had difficulty understanding Hardy’s villain, whose Mussolini build is matched by a voice sounding like Peter O’Toole talking into a chimney. I couldn’t always understand every word Bane utters but it doesn’t take away from how vile and diabolical he is. Hardy creates a fascinating character and I found myself hating his guts. Bale has more to do in this entry than the others and truly shines, while Hathaway is in her element playing something of a dual role, as Selina is always giving a performance hiding her true, scrappy self. Horiscope

Sign Language BY CAERIEL CRESTIN LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Dear Leo, you’ve finally realized that life will never be perfect—and that’s a good thing. It gives you something to hope and strive for, which is what makes life fun and worth living. It’s boring about five minutes after you’ve gotten everything you want. Luckily, while on your journey you’ve also found the ability to appreciate all the sweetness that currently fills your existence, and to mostly ignore the bad. That’s one of the keys to your overall happiness, and overall, awesome news. Hang on to that, and “bad weeks” will become mostly a thing of the past; from here on out, the spectrum ought to run from “pretty good” to “downright awesome.”

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) All your big plans may just boil down to nothing. In fact, the more you put into them this week, the more frivolous they’ll seem in the long run—something akin to traveling to the southern hemisphere to watch water spiral the other way down the drain. I don’t want your reaction to be, “Huh. So what’s the big deal?” because then you’d kick yourself for wasting so much time on them. Instead, let them sit for a week. If they’re truly worthwhile, they’ll still compel you next week. Then you’ll be boxing kangaroos and silly, inconsequential details like water dynamics will barely scratch your notice.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Holy shit, that tool belt of yours must weigh 30 pounds. You’re so prepared for certain eventualities (like mechanical breakdowns, ninja attacks or beauty contests) that you’re completely helpless when confronted with other, unforeseen situations–-like having to run a timed shopping spree, cross a tenuous rope bridge or sneak up on someone. To equip yourself for some of the latter activities, would you consider lightening your load? That doesn’t mean leaving yourself completely unprepared for the former ones, though. Stuff a good pocketknife and a smartphone in your pocket, don some decent running cross-trainers and consider yourself ready for anything.

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) It’s important to your own evolution to get to the point where most of your emotional energy is devoted to others, instead of yourself. That nurturing energy is one of your magic powers. But you can’t take care of other people unless you learn how to (and do) take care of yourself well. Once you’ve learned to aim your ray of comfort inward, you’ll find that there’s plenty left over for everyone else. However, if you use it for others’ benefit before taking care of your own needs, you’ll soon discover that there’s scarcely anything left for you. It would be sheer folly to advise nearly any other sign (save those beleaguered Virgos) to adopt a “Me first” attitude this week–-but that’s exactly what I suggest to you.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Don’t give up so quickly. Sometimes good things just fall in your lap, but truly special moments often take a little work. If they were too easy, you wouldn’t appreciate them. Live for the exceptions, baby. (It’s the only way to lead an exceptional life—don’t you want that?) They’re worth it. Take the risks. Make the extra effort. Try again. Yes, I mean you. It’s supposed to be hard, so you’ll value your goal (New love? Promotion? Gold medal?) once you get it. If you’re feeling discouraged, remember: you’ve got absolutely nothing to lose except your average, familiar existence. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) A lot of people in my old home, San Francisco, rave about the weather there. I don’t get it. Regarding my climatic preference: give me seasons (and I’m not referring to Damp, Foggy, Rainy, and Dry)! That’s why you Scorpios intrigue me. Your internal emotional temperatures can range from scorching to Absolute Zero. While we’re talking about your inner climate, I might as well mention: You’re due for a week or two of balmy sea breezes, sunshine, and only enough drizzle to generate rainbows. If it’s all too sickeningly sweet for you, never fear: You’re bound to have an exciting hurricane or two before summer’s through. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Slather on the sunscreen. You rarely seek out the spotlight. Nor do you avoid it. Occasionally you bask in its radiance. Usually, though, it centers on those who actively seek out the glory, or demand it. Most of the time, you simply can’t be bothered with this essentially petty game. Worry not, you won’t have to cope with the direct glare of the full-force high-beam of dazzling attention. But this week it might settle on someone so close to you that you’d better protect yourself with a pair of sunglasses and some 15 SPF sunblock. Don’t freak—it won’t last long; probably just long enough to give yourself a lovely, sexy, all-over tan. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You feel like a boomerang, finally arcing back toward the force that propelled you away originally. I’d argue your current state is more like that of a flying fish taking its first leap from the waves. Following your swift glide, you plunge back into the life-giving water. Your first sensation may be one of relief as you return to familiar, nurturing surroundings. But I think you’ll find that the new place you’ve discovered is just as much a necessary part of you as the old neighborhood that you’ve lived in up till now. Own it, baby. Your world just got twice as big–-and there’s more where that came from.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) We are the looked-for end result of centuries of history. Never before have individuals been as empowered as we are now—culturally, economically, technologically. Nearly everyone in America has at least some time to explore their creativity. Growing numbers of people pursue careers “telling their truth” in whatever forms that might take—and they do well. What’s with you holdouts? Do you think your unique perspective is less interesting or valuable than those propagated by the rest of us? Au contraire—we’re in great need of what you have to say. So quit giving your mojo to The Man and give it to people, in general. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) In order for human consciousness to evolve, we must reject authority. I’m not talking anarchy here. I’m referring to a basic shift from hierarchy to cooperation. Don’t stop listening to those who’re supposedly wiser, or simply more powerful. But make your own choices. Don’t blindly submit to the whims of a CEO, parent, or god. Practice this. The next time (and every time, subsequently) that you’re issued an order, ultimatum, or veiled threat, hear it as the choice you’re really being given. You may still choose to submit. But you may not. Suddenly, the power’s in your hands.

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) You big goof. Because of your excess of charm, your social ineptitude doesn’t usually show. But when you blunder—and blunder you have—it’s sometimes puzzling to you. “Like, what happened?” Fixing it is even more of a mystery. Movie cliché reconciliations won’t work—maybe a Leo could pull off the moonlight serenade with roses, but not you. So what to do? It’s so easy: be yourself. Don’t hesitate when it comes to being real. Bumble around, admit your confusion and face the music. It’s more likely to be a love song than a dirge, if you follow my advice. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) This week you’re everyone’s Sugar Mama (or Poppa): shoulder to cry on, giver of cash loans, baker of cakes, and singer of lullabies. Great. These are some of your shiniest qualities, and can definitely earn you some karma bucks. But don’t overdue it. There’s a fine line between offering support and undermining foundations. It’s not pretty when a reasonable request for help mutates into full-blown dependence. Maintain those well-defined boundaries, and you maintain your freedom. That way folks won’t have as much reason to resent it when (like, next week) Good Witch gets tired and Moody Bitch takes over.
