SEWER TALK As always your paper takes on and illuminates problems here on Maui that Joe [Bradley, Publisher] over at The Maui News seems to favor ignoring (“Big Waste, July 26, 2012). One of the most frustrating things in life is to see a solution to a major problem and not being able to get anyone to listen or consider your idea. We need to take care of wastewater in a proactive way to protect the aina and our precious water resources, both ocean and freshwater. I believe that I have an idea that not only addresses the dilemma of how to deal with sewage and wastewater, but also could provide a source of clean, renew-
able electric power that is nothing short of amazing in its simplicity. Instead of septic tanks, cesspools and injection wells, all this wastewater could be converted into renewable power while at the same time being treated and purified before being used for irrigation. How could this be done? By combining wastewater treatment with a pumped hydro storage system. As it stands now, Maui Electric is hard pressed to deal with the surplus power from wind and P/V to the point that it now will not allow any more P/V from Maui Meadows because they can’t balance the baseline power with the fluctuation of alternative power sources. If we could pump the wastewater up-slope utilizing this surplus power, the water could then be processed and treated while at the same time being used to generate a supply of reliable and constant power that the grid and baseline could handle. - Waldemar D. Kmentt, via MauiTime.com
Gravity Vortex Hydro Electric sounds OK, but how about connecting all septic systems up country to one or several lines that lead to a treatment plant and then a hydroelectric generator? Every time you flush your toilet, you are creating electricity. It is too simple. We need this before we need more rich people and mega malls. Infrastructure before development. -Brian Sweeney, via MauiTime.com

Gil Keith-Agaran may have a very brief career in elected politics, but the attorney who now practices law in Wailuku with Tony Takitani has a long resume packed with state and county government: Maui County Public Works Director, Chairman of the state Board of Land & Natural Resources, Director of the state Department of Labor & Industrial Relations, Deputy Director of the state Department of Commerce & Commerce Affairs. Appointed by then-Governor Linda Lingle to fill the vacancy left by the 2009 death of Representative Bob Nakasone, Keith-Agaran won election in his own right in 2010 and has since risen to the post of chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. He graduated from Maui High, then earned his B.A. at Yale and his J.D. from UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law. Considered one of the more intellectual members of the House, Keith-Agaran is also a big fan of Twitter (his handle is @GilKAOGG), and he’s one of the few Hawaii officials to use social media extensively.

Mele Carroll
MELE CARROLL STILL CAN’T MEET A CAMPAIGN FINANCE REPORT DEADLINE You know what’s depressing? Reading the newspaper. And I know, because I write for a newspaper. I’m serious. In the last week, it seems that every time I open a paper or check my Google News Reader, I read some downer of a story that forces me to ask why we even bother to have laws and constitutions and things. Case in point is state Representative Mele Carroll (D-East Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Kaho‘olawe) and her seemingly complete inability to file a campaign finance report on time. She was busted for five violations last time around, and it cost her $2,608 in fines from the state Campaign Spending Commission (though complex, these reports are not impossible–the rest of Maui’s delegation in the state House of Representatives apparently managed to get their reports in by the deadline and, well, you get the idea). Anyway, if you thought that would teach her to put campaign reports on the very top of her To Do list, you’d be wrong. On Thursday, July 26, The Maui News ran a story saying Carroll had, yet again, missed the filing deadline. But a mere 24 hours later–surprise! The News has a follow-up article saying Carroll had finally gotten her paperwork completed (and just two weeks late!). Why it took so long for the representative to file her re-election committee’s campaign finance report is difficult to say–Carroll’s explanation in the paper was a jumble of words like “misplaced” and “forgot” and “a friend in Honolulu had my file in her bag.” Look, Carroll isn’t a bad person. She isn’t even a bad legislator. But clearly, more than $2,000 in fines slapped against her last year
didn’t convince Carroll that getting a proper accounting of the money her campaign committee is taking in and dishing out to the commission so they can disseminate it to the public was all that important. Me? I want nearly everything done by public officials disclosed to the public. This is about as realistic as getting state officials to make clear that zoning designations like “residential” and “light industrial” mean exactly what they say, and prohibit land developers from, say, loading tens of thousands of square feet of commercial retail businesses into land zoned “light industrial.” Or requiring the Obama Administration to explain exactly how the National Security Agency allegedly conducted “unconstitutional” spying on Americans. We can all dream, right?
DOES ED CASE HAVE ANY ISSUES LEFT? If I were Ed Case, I’d start to consider ending my electoral political aspirations.
He’s a decent guy, sure, and, when he was in the U.S. House of Representatives, as effective as a legislator can be when he or she is from Hawaii. But from the start of his campaign for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by retiring Democrat Daniel Akaka, Case has pretty much been the odd guy out at a dance between current Democratic Representative Mazie Hirono (whose 2nd District includes all of Hawaii except Honolulu) and Republican Linda Lingle. Profoundly unpopular with the Hawaii Democratic Party since his upstart attempt to unseat Akaka six years ago, Case was a third choice for the seat the instant he entered the race. From the beginning, the senate race shaped itself as a rematch between liberal Congresswoman Hirono, the one-time Hawaii lieutenant governor who in 2002 had wanted the state’s top job, and Lingle the conservative woman from Missouri who beat her and then sat in the governor’s office for eight straight years. And that was all long before Hirono started running that “Opposites Attract” television ad. Seriously, have you seen that thing? It’s just a minute and a half long, but it eviscerates Case’s premier argument against Hirono–that she’s too liberal to represent Hawaii in the Senate. It’s been his best drum to beat, and beat it he has (Hirono is, after all, extremely liberal), but right before his last televised debate with Hirono, her new ad hit the airwaves and smashed Case’s drum to bits. The ad is very simple. It shows Hirono, clad in a purple jacket, sitting next to 19term Republican Congressman Don Young of Alaska. Young, who has sat in Congress since Richard Nixon was president, is the second most senior Republican in the U.S. House. Did I mention he’s also a Republican? Anyway, in the ad Young–A REPUBLICAN–sits next to Democrat Hirono and chats about how they struck some bipartisan compromise on some bill that apparently required Hirono “to battle my party leadership to get our amendment passed.” This thing apparently
Overheard FIRST WOMAN: Look on the screen. Are those images of sperm they are projecting? SECOND WOMAN: No, no, it can’t be. FIRST WOMAN: No, that is sperm. That’s not art! -Art=Mixx show at the MACC, July 28
meant so much to Young that he (who, I might have forgotten to say, is a member of the Republican Party) is now endorsing Hirono for the United States Senate. The content, the timing, the simple, folksy style of the ad–it’s all genius. A week ago, no one outside of Alaska had even heard of Don Young (or Mazie Hirono, for that matter), and now CNN is blogging about them both. The ad is also great political theater: Young gets in a few (smiling) jabs at House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and Hirono (also smiling) attempts to keep Young from saying too much. We’re so used to hearing Democratic and Republican politicians hurling ludicrous charges at each other, that the sight of two on opposite sides of the room sitting next to each other, joking and being friendly is genuinely shocking. Ultimately, of course, I’m not Ed Case, and he wouldn’t be much of a politician if he bowed out of the race at the urging of a lowly alt-weekly editor. But it’s also undeniable that Hirono’s Young endorsement couldn’t come at a worse time for Case.
Ed Case
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE... Just out of curiosity, given all the talk during this political campaign about the economy and such, I checked a few numbers this week. According to the Statewide Homeless Point-in-Time Count for 2011 (the most recent report put out by the Hawaii Department of Human Services), there are 658 unsheltered homeless people living in Maui County. At the same time, RealtyTrac–a website that tracks foreclosures nationwide–reports that there are currently 718 homes in Maui County on the foreclosure list. See? The system works. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1607n1

Recycle this!
METAL RECYCLING ON MOLOKAI Recycling scrap metal and broken-down cars can be tricky, especially on Molokai. The County of Maui Environmental Management Solid Waste Division’s Molokai Metals Facility (MMF) only accepts metals during certain times of the year. But residents who’ve been saving their metals may be thrilled that the recycling facility opens today and will be taking scrap metals through Sept. 8. In the past closure period, the county has made a few improvements. Workers poured a concrete slab so metal no longer has to be processed over the dirt. There were also a few safety measures and hazardous waste considerations made to the facility. MMF will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8am to 2:30pm. It will accept vehicles, appliances, metals, tires, batteries, motorcycles, propane tanks, roofing, gutters, engine parts, mowers, bicycles, and other ferrous or nonferrous scrap metals. Anyone bringing automobiles, trucks or motorcycles will need to fill out a vehicle acceptance form and file a Statement of Junking.
Monkeypod Kitchen wins Gold Nugget Award
MMF is located at the Moloka’i-Naiwa Landfill on Maunaloa Highway. For more information call 808-658-9029 or go to mauicounty.gov/solidwaste. If you need assistance moving materials from your home, then please call Community Work Day at 808-877-2524 to schedule a pick-up before Aug. 10. Program assistance is limited.
The design “utilizes the distinctive, local and sustainable wood from its namesake Monkeypod tree at unique communal areas such as the pizza bar top, the community table, and the host stand,” says Lindsay McClelland, a spokesperson from Becker Communications. “In addition, the eatery features handcrafted details throughout, including a reclaimed wood overhead trellis, a cut wood and woven rope screen, hand-painted surfboards and glass fishing float backdrop.” James Keller, Armstrong’s president, is justifiably pleased. “We’re proud of many of our projects, both commercial and residential,” he says. “In fact, last year we won a Grand Award at the BIA Hawaii Renaissance Awards for another Maui restaurant, Japango at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort. Additionally, we’re proud of the sustainable projects that we’ve completed in partnership with the [Department of Hawaiian Home Lands] DHHL which include Kumuhau on Oahu and Lai Opua on the Big Island. STEM JOB FAIR Are you a returning expat with a science or engineering degree in your back pocket? If so, Maui Economic Development Board (MEDB)’s Women in Technology (WIT) wants to help you find a job. This Friday, Aug. 3, you’re invited to their Kama’aina Come Home Expo at MEDB’s Ke Alahele Center in Kihei, which runs 12-2pm. Even if you’re home for the summer while earning your science, technology, engineering and math degree, WIT says it’s not too early to start planning your return home to a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) career on Maui. MONKEYPOD BUILDER WINS ARCHITECTURE AWARD If you’ve hung out in Monkeypod Kitchen in Wailea, you might have noticed the carved tree hanging on ropes in the entrance, the huge communal table and the wood in the hostess stand. If so, you’ve seen some of the beautiful work Armstrong Builders was responsible for in the construction of the restaurant. Now their work is being appreciated by more than just patrons: Armstrong’s Monkeypod craftsmanship just won them a 2012 Gold Nugget Award in the Best Retail Project category. The company says it took them four and half months to do the demolition, finish carpentry and the general labor on the restaurant.

recently completed the lobby renovation for the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa. Our current projects include the Easter Seals at Kahului and 26 homes for the DHHL.” Monkeypod Kitchen was conceptualized by chef and owner Peter Merriman and Bill Terry, CEO of Handcrafted Restaurants. Terry says he and Merriman had been fans of the Monkeypod tree for years, which is how the restaurant got its green name. It was natural that they used the wood of the Monkeypod in the design. “Along with being an iconic tree in Hawaii, some of the best hand crafts come from Monkeypod wood,” says Terry. “It’s used to make ukuleles, bowls, benches, etc. Hawaiian craftsmen have been using it for years. The tree also has a unique property in which it thrives and simultaneously protects the grass and life below it. It can be used as a metaphor for how we want our company to interact with the community. We want to thrive and support our community as well through our purchasing and practices.”

URINAL TECH

Two Brazilian firms collaborated recently to test a whimsical device that could perhaps lessen splashing on men’s room floors: a urinal containing a fretboard that makes musical sounds as liquid hits it (if the stream is strong enough). According to a May report in the Brazilian edition of Billboard magazine, versions were set up in several Sao Paulo bars to see if men’s aims improved. (Flushing produces an online address from which a sound recording of the user’s “music” can be retrieved.) And in a project that has already gone live in 200 Michigan bars and restaurants, the state’s Office of Highway Safety Planning has installed “talking” urinal cakes featuring a female announcer urging inebriated patrons to call a taxi.

From time to time, Buddhist groups attempt to improve their “karmic balance” by doing good deeds for Earth’s animal cohabitants. (Previously, “News of the Weird” mentioned a California group’s “freeing” fish by buying out a pet shop’s inventory and liberating the “lucky” fish into the Pacific Ocean–where they were undoubtedly eaten almost immediately by larger fish.) In June, about 50 members of the Let Blessings and Wisdom Grow Buddhist group in Beijing bought at least 200 snakes, took them into a rural area of Hebei province, and, chanting, released them. Almost immediately, the snakes infested the nearby village of Miao Erdong, horrifying the villagers, who were able to club to death some of the snakes, but who remained on edge.
THE FIRST RULE OF FIGHT CHURCH IS... Prominent filmmakers Daniel Junge (an Academy Award winner) and Bryan Storkel have been raising money for their documentary Fight Church, featuring devout Christian mixed martial artists viciously pummeling each other–but only after the brawlers begin the match with a prayer and commitment to serve Jesus Christ. Among those featured is Pastor Paul Burress of Rochester, N.Y., who says he “loves to fight” and sees no problem with MMA’s barbaric nature. “These [techniques of fighting savage] are the gifts and the skills God has given me.”
WE’RE DOOMED Scottish officials were reportedly optimistic about a recent decision of the legislature of Louisiana to broaden a voucher program, allowing parents to choose private schools with Christian fundamentalist curricula. One prominent textbook for that curriculum (offered by the Accelerated Christian Education program) touted sightings of Scotland’s Loch Ness monster as “evidence” that

humans and dinosaurs walked the Earth at the same time, thus undermining the widely accepted scientific theory of evolution. Officials now anticipate an influx of tourists to Loch Ness, near Inverness.
CULTURAL DIVERSITY Television ads appeared recently in India exploiting women’s obsession with lightening their skin–a fascination already responsible for a rich market in facial bleaching. Now, ads for “Clean and Dry Intimate Wash” promise to “refresh” a woman’s private parts by making them fairer. Female columnist Amrit Dhillon, viewing an ad of a disinterested husband ignoring his too-brown wife, denounced the product as catering to “self-hatred–of race and gender” and urged the banning of the ads.
QUESTIONABLE JUDGMENTS Adriana Villareal of Dos de Mayo, Argentina, lost her husband two years ago but now makes it a point to visit his tomb about four times a year, and not just briefly. Villareal brings bedding, an Internet connection and a small stove so that she can remain three or four days at each visit. Said Villareal, according to a June Agence FrancePresse dispatch, “When you love someone, you do all sorts of things.”
BARELY ILLEGAL The Illinois Supreme Court affirmed a lower court ruling in June in which Marshall Hollins was sentenced to eight years in prison for taking cellphone photographs of a 17-year-old girl with whom he was having sex. That sex was voluntary and, since Illinois’ age of consent is 16, legal. But the court ruled that it’s still illegal in Illinois to take sexual pictures of a child, and that particular law defines underage as under 18. (Hollins had claimed, unsuccessfully, that he surely ought to be able to take pictures of a legal event.)
LEAST COMPETENT CRIMINALS On June 8, sheriff’s deputies near Tampa, Fla., charged Robert Suggs, 36, and David Hall, 28, with taking a front-end loader and a dump truck from a construction site and using them to steal an ATM from a Bank of America drive-thru. The theft took place at 5 am and deputies arrested the pair that afternoon when they were found near the bank, still trying to get the ATM open. But on the same day, in Albuquerque, Thomas Molina, 38, was arrested in the act of fleeing a burglary at Central New Mexico Community College. As he tried to climb out a window, his getaway was hampered by having gotten his foot caught in the blinds. ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1607n3

tanding just an inch over five feet, Eri Yoshida would not be intimidating to most people. But on the baseball field, it’s a different story. Hailing from Yokohama, Japan, Yoshida has broken all sorts of records since she was first drafted into the professional Japanese baseball team
10 AUGUST 2, 2012
Kobe 9 Cruise at age 16. In fact, you can say she started breaking records when she was 16, because she was the first female ever to be drafted into a professional baseball team in Japan. For decades, the news media has been filled with stories about women being underrepresented in fields like engineering, science and business. Few,
though, have complained about the definite lack of women on the fields of professional baseball. In the United States, this didn’t seem to be an issue at all. In fact, most people didn’t even seem to notice it. But then in 2010, a lot of people began to notice. That’s when Yoshida came to the U.S. and started setting more records.
She joined the North American League’s Chico Outlaws, becoming the first female professional baseball player in America in a decade (her predecessor, the pitcher Ila Borders, retired from the Western Baseball League’s Zion Pioneerzz in 2000). Not long after, Yoshida’s jersey and the bat she used to get her first hit–which also happened to be the first hit a woman
TALKING WITH NA KOA IKAIKA MAUI’S RECORD-BREAKING PITCHER earned in a men’s professional game in more than 50 years– became enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Oh, and she also earned the distinction in 2010 of being the first female baseball player to ever play professionally in two countries. Two months after that happened, she was the first to play in three countries. Anyone, male or female, holding these records and disctinctions would be entitled to plenty of bragging rights. The fact that her old Outlaws jersey is already at Cooperstown would be an incredible burden for any player, including those in the major leagues. But not Yoshida, who really seems to put her team above her own accomplishments (it’s common, for instance, to see her working as the team’s bat girl on nights when she’s not pitching). Her love of baseball is what keeps her in the game, she says, not the publicity. Since 2011, Yoshida has pitched here, for the Na Koa Ikaika Maui club. She has earned the nickname “Knuckle Princess” for the erratic, corkscrew pitches she throws. Still just 20 years old, Yoshida is already a force to be reckoned with. After the conclusion of Na Koa Ikaika’s July 28 loss against the Sonoma Grapes, I sat down with Yoshida at Ichiro “Iron” Maehara Stadium in Wailuku. Sammy Sutton acted as interpreter, but some material was clearly lost in translation. Here, though, is most of what she had to say: MAUITIME: Why did you first get into baseball? ERI YOSHIDA: I loved bsaseball ever since I was a kid. MT: How old were you when you started playing baseball?
By Megan Hazen
MT: How do you feel about being the only woman on an all-male team? YOSHIDA: I just work hard and play baseball. [NOTE: At this point, the older Japanese woman offered that, “She used to play with the boys, so she doesn’t feel any differently.”] MT: What’s your favorite baseball team, other than Na Koa Ikaika? YOSHIDA: The Hyogo Blue Thunders [NOTE: Yoshida pitched for the Thunders, in the Kansai region of Japan, this past spring. During that time, she became the first female baseball player to win in the Kansai Independent League.] MT: Who is an an athlete who inspires you? Why? YOSHIDA: Tim Wakefield, because I always watched him and learned how to throw a knuckleball from him. MT: What has been the proudest moment in your career? YOSHIDA: When I won my third game with Na Koa Ikaika this summer, which broke the record for number of wins by a female pitcher in any North American professional baseball league. MT: What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career? YOSHIDA: Being a girl in a maledominated sport. MT: Who has been your biggest supporter? YOSHIDA: My mom and dad. MT: How long do you plan to stay on Maui? YOSHIDA: Until September [when the season ends], and then I’m going back to Japan. MT: What do you like most about Maui? YOSHIDA: The weather and the fruit.
YOSHIDA: I started playing in my second year of elementary school.
MT: How is Maui different from your native Japan?
MT: You’ve been playing professionally since you were 16. How do you balance your personal life with your career? [NOTE: Sutton and Yoshida clearly had a hard time with this question. Eventually Yoshida called over an older Japanese woman to help with the translation. After a few minutes of discussion in Japanese, Sutton said simply, “She was very happy that she got to pros.”]
YOSHIDA: The weather and the fruit. It’s very tasty. MT: Where do you see yourself in 10 years? YOSHIDA: I don’t know where I’ll be, but hopefully still playing baseball, and at a higher level. ■ editor@mauitime.com + @meg_lhazen To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1607L

FOODIE NEWS BY JEN RUSSO
Fish Story Will mariculture help make seafood sustainable in Hawaii?
Mmm... fish
I
love fish sh. Whether I’m catching my own mahi while line trolling on the small sport fishing boats or getting beautiful filets from my brother-inlaw’s spearfishing outings, the results are some of the most memorable and healthy meals to come from my kitchen. Fishing for meals is a part of our culture on Maui, as is eating fresh, locally caught fish in restaurants. But our fishing industry and culture is threatened with the depletion of wild fish stocks. It’s hard to see, given that the boats in Lahaina Harbor don't resemble the giant commercial fishing expeditions seen on Deadliest Catch. But our current passion for fish is just not sustainable. “[M]arine resources in the main Hawaiian islands are being stretched thin,” Chris Colletta wrote on Blog.conservation.org. “The islands have lost 75 percent of their fish population in recent years. Much of this decline can be attributed to unsustainable coastal development and pollution. In addition, there’s a lot of ocean around Hawaii, and it’s not always easy to monitor illegal activity and enforce existing laws.” One of the things we can do is eat more farmed seafood products to offset our intake of wild fish. Chef Peter Merriman recently started a fish initiative to do exactly that in his restaurants across the state. For instance, fish portions on his dishes are usually six ounces. But starting Aug. 1, all his restaurants will offer a “sustainable seafood
special” that will reduce the wild caught fish portion to three ounces and add another three ounces of farmraised seafood. This way, patrons will get a taste of what Hawaii has to offer in the way of sustainably farmed fish. Like Hawaiian Kampachi, which is raised in deep water offshore of Kona. Blue Ocean Mariculture, the company that maintains the hatchery and cages, supplies healthy five-pound Hawaiian Kampachi. Company president Todd Madsen says the company is dedicated to “sustainable and responsible” production of finfish in Hawaii, citing the fish’s high quality and the low environmental impact of their operation. Kampachi Farms is also on Hawaii Island. They’re a company that’s pioneering finfish farming methods. While not in the business of commercially farming fish, they’re researching ways to make that more feasible. Recently they had a very successful research operation launched out of Kawaihae into the waters off Hawaii. This “fallow” method raises fish stock in an unanchored drifting net ball that lingers two to three miles beneath the surface in deep ocean water tethered to a boat. The company says that this method, beta tested over the past year, could be a
game changer for the seafood industry. It’s high-tech stuff, and in a partnership with Lockheed Martin the project (called Velella) involves robotic cage cleaners, satellite communication and auto feeders. “Is there risk to wild fish stock when fishing? Yes! We are killing all the fish!” says Niel Sims, CEO of Kampachi Farms. “Half of our imported fish is farmed already, we are just exporting our environmental footprint. We don’t care how it's grown or fished we just pay and buy it. The only sustainable way to continue to meet the demand for fish is to grow the farmed fish industry. Yet here on the island of Hawaii, there is only one permit in operation since starting the industry in 2004. In eight years there has not been another. The state permitting process and investments are impediments. Applications for moi farm in Hawaii, opakapaka in Lanai, moi off Maui, Tuna off Waianae were all submitted and all of those did not make it through the process. Maybe it’s too restrictive?” Merriman is launching his sustainable seafood special with a $5,000 donation to Conservation International’s Hawaii Fish Trust Project. This new initiative aims to support sustainable fishing practices and will try to restore near shore fish populations. Conserva-
Peter Merriman cutting ono
tion International’s website points out that “Historically, Hawaii was a self-sufficient Polynesian voyaging culture deeply connected to the environment, successfully managing food resources through development of large-scale aquaculture, while today Hawaii imports 85% of its food. While the locally grown food sector grows, fisheries are the forgotten factor in Hawaii’s food security.” Another company, Sunrise Capital, operates the Kauai Shrimp Farm in Kekaha. Owner George Chamberlain says they breed the shrimp from start to finish in sustainable conditions. Fresh water is the key, he says. His farm pumps clean water from 500 feet deep. Right now the farm has had zero water overflow for six years. The farm raises clams and oysters with the water discharged after raising shrimp. They’re currently researching the prospect of raising high density algae for fuel energy use. These delicious shrimp are known for their sweet taste and will also be making an appearance in Merriman’s sustainable seafood special. The specials will run for $46.95 at Merriman’s in Kapalua and $35.95 at Monkeypod Kitchen. The special ends Sept. 30, 2012. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso

Eat Gogi! A Korean Taco Truck Finally Comes To Maui BY JEN RUSSO
Fresh from Oahu
EAT GOGI Eatgogi.com Twitter.com/eatgogi Facebook.com/eatgogi
O
ahu, eat your Korean taco heart out out. Your Eat Gogi food truck bounced islands and is now on Maui. At the end of July I recognized Eat Gogi’s colorful truck right away on the corner of Kahului Beach Road and Kaahumanu
news because editor Anthony Pignataro and I have lately been pining away for Korean tacos; in fact, we’ve been scheming to convince a chef or two to add them to their menus. What’s the big deal about Korean tacos? You take deliciously seasoned Korean-style barbecued meat–short rib, spicy pork or chicken–then put it in two small corn tortillas and top it with kim chee. These are serious Scooby snacks at just $2 each. They also offer tofu for the meat-challenged. For my inauAvenue. The shiny chrome details, hypergural visit to their styled black and red menu, images of its Kahului roadside location, I Korean anime mascot and super-sized also ordered a Gogi Dog. Not spicy pork taco photo banner gave it for the faint of heart (literally away instantly. Not to mention the masor figuratively), the Gogi Dog sive “Chee Hooo” on the back. is an American/Korean fusion The truck’s crew told me it only classic. They start with the giant took two stand up paddle boards and all-beef dog, then top it with a couple of canoe escorts to make the spicy pork and an over-easy ocean crossing from Oahu to Maui. Nofried egg. They place all that body got seasick, and the sharks seemed in a toasted sesame seed bun, to love the short rib tacos. But the trip which also holds ketchup, furiwas so traumatizing that the truck has kake, spicy kewpie mayo and a decided to stay on Maui. This is good sprinkling of Mexican cheese and diced green onions. It’s so good, and a bargain at $6. The Bimbap burrito is another of Eat Gogi’s take on fusion fantasy. Here, a tortilla holds Korean fried rice, choi sum, a fried egg and your choice of meat, along with Mexi cheese and green onions. There’s also a slider on their menu, and creamy kim chee fries. It almost goes without saying that you can add meat to your fries for a couple bucks more. The truck has lately been parked in the parking lot of the Maui Home Design Center, across the street from Sears at the Spicy port taco Kaahumanu Center in Ka-
hului. They show up around noon and stay until they sell out of everything (which usually only takes a couple hours). Food Trucks are Gypsy restaurants– you never know where they will show up, so it’s important to stay connected to them via their twitter feed. Of course, then you have to prepare yourself to receive heartbreaking updates like the July 31 message sent at 1:50pm: “Korean Taco Truck @EatGogi Mahalo K’lui peeps! No mas!! We’re out of everything! Jes, everything! Be back fri lunch same place Maui Home Design Center parking lot.” But if
Kim chee fries
you send out messages like, “Gogi Dog emergency, where and when today?” the @Eatgogi crew is pretty good about letting you know the next time you can get their food. It happens fast, so for your best bite get there quickly before they run out of your favorites. They also carry ice cold sodas and water, and have a little area for you to wrap up your food up in tin foil if you aren’t planning to devour everything right then and there.■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso

It’s my personal favorite of Willy’s plays–there’s Lady Macbeth, the ultimate diva, and her trip to Crazytown with the whole “Out damn spot!” episode. Simply prepareth a Shakespearean sonnet or monologue that runs a minute or two and audition away. Call ahead for a 10-minute audition slot. Free. Aug. 2, 6-8pm; Aug. 4, 1-3pm. SWISS INDEPENDENCE PARTY – If you’re like me (not Swiss), Switzerland brings two things to mind: cheese with holes in it and international neutrality. Of course, this is a very narrow view of a country rich in cultural traditions and history (I’m assuming). For example, I just learned that Switzerland gained independence from German rule way back in 1291. This is important because you can celebrate Switzerland’s freedom at Brigit & Bernard’s Garden Cafe this week! Brigit & Bernard’s is often considered a German restaurant, but chef/owner Bernard Weber actually hails from the land of great skiing, cuckoo clocks and secret bank accounts. Enjoy live music (“dorfmusikanten”), Swiss trivia games and a Jodel contest, along with tasty traditional Swiss cuisine (raclette, bratwurst and aargauer ruebli suppe) in an all-youcan-eat buffet. $38 all-you-can-eat buffet, $17.50 raclette only, $17.50 bratwurst platter only. Aug 1-3, 6pm-close. Brigit & Bernard’s Garden Cafe, Kahului (335 Hoohana St.); 808-877-6000.
FRIDAY, AUG. 3 FREE ENCHANTED SCREENING AT THE MACC – Bring the whole family to enjoy a free screening of Enchanted, the Disney movie starring Amy Adams as naive, animated princess Giselle who turns live-action when she’s thrown into the hustle and bustle of NYC. Also starring McDreamy (Patrick Dempsey) as an unlikely Prince Charming, James Marsden and Susan Sarandon as the evil queen. It’ll be on the big screen at Yokouchi Pavilion, so bring blankets and beach chairs. There will also be music, dining and drink specials. Free. 7:30-10pm. Maui Arts & Cultural Center (One Cameron Way); 808-242-7469; mauiarts.org.

It’s a great opportunity to get involved with the community, get your hands dirty and wear overalls with no fear or shame. The garden is a project of the Sustainable Living Institute of Maui (SLIM) and, with your help, will be up and running by Aug. 22. Starting Aug. 3, you can join volunteers for Friday garden workdays from 10am-2pm and help plant and organize the garden. All workdays will include a tasty lunch provided by Flatbread Pizza Co. Garden plots are still available for rent. Garden Workdays: Free. August 3-22 (Fridays), 10am-2pm. UHMC (310 Ka’ahumanu Ave); contact Tracy Tarlow: 415-717-2217, tracytarlow@gmail.com.
FRIDAY, AUG. 3 MUSIC FRIDAYS AT THE KEA LANI – Here’s a nice pau hana option: the Fairmont Kea Lani has partnered with the Institute of Hawaiian Music at UH Maui College to bring you free live music every Friday. Junkyard Future Total Recall remake totally sucks BY BARRY WURST II
Total Recall ★★★★★
Rated PG 13 / 118 Min.
D
ouglas Quaid (played by Colin Farrell) lives with his wife (Kate Beckinsale) in a crowded futuristic city and finds his existence empty and unfulfilling. He decides to go to Rekall, a company that implants exciting memories that are said to be as real and vivid as real life. Quaid opts for a phony memory of himself as a secret agent, a fanciful idea that immediately goes wrong once he straps himself into the chair... The only thing worse than a mediocre sci-fi action time waster, which this certainly is, must be an inferior remake of a still-great movie. The original 1990 Total Recall towers over this movie the same way Haleakala stands grandly and easily over a cow pie. Directed by Paul Verhoeven, the fearless Dutch director of Robocop and Starship Troopers, it holds up great, blending wall-to-wall excitement with mind
bending questions of true identity, and remains Arnold Schwarzenegger’s best genre vehicle outside of The Terminator. Verhoeven is an anything-goes filmmaker whose films are saturated with splatters of gore, open sexuality and intelligent, probing explorations of our darkest impulses. By comparison, the remake director Len Wiseman did a fine job helming Live Free or Die Hard, but he’s in over his head here. The result is as soulless and underwhelming as his Underworld. Reportedly costing $200 million and giving audiences an eyesore vision of the future, nearly every scene comes with unmotivated strobe lighting and lens flares. The look of the film is clunky, junkyard ready and yet brimming with high tech gadgetry. It plays more like a lavish remake of Johnny Mnemonic. Our future resembles a messy block of forgotten Legos, which gives the filmmakers chances to steal from Blade Runner, The Fifth Element and Minority Report at every possible moment. The result is like those movies stripped for their action and lacking their considerable smarts and wild ideas. It opens with a long story crawl that winds up adding nothing to the narrative
at all, a definite bad sign early on. The political subplot intends to make a nod at current headlines but never comes across Redundant and tiresome and most unforgivably, the is-it-real-or-is-it-Rekall angle, the driving force of the original, is tossed aside. What remains are lots of shoot outs, chases and fight scenes, which become redundant and tiresome near the end, which doesn’t come soon enough. Farrell’s a great actor and his wily performance in last summer’s lousy Fright Night remake was the best thing about that movie; here, he doesn’t seem entirely engaged by his character or the movie. Beckinsale, the director’s wife, gives a vanity performance that mostly just shows off her toned figure; instead of nailing a potentially delicious dual role (like Sharon Stone did in the first version), Beckinsale struts around like a really peeved soccer mom. Jessica Biel, playing a gun toting freedom fighter, is both absurdly

miscast and still unimpressive as an actress. The Hover Car chase sequence is as good as this gets but I liked it better when it was Bruce Willis driving a flying cab. Except for the many lines that are quoted directly from the original, the dialogue is witless and the story is no longer surprising, shocking or all that interesting. Losing the Mars angle from the original was another bad idea, as it gave the double-agent angle a purpose. Without that, there’s no reason for any of this to take place, beyond staging another CGI explosion. Nearly a scene for scene copy and bungle of the first movie, this is the most useless remake since Let Me In. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1607f

Horoscope
Sign Language BY CAERIEL CRESTIN LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) Quit making snap judgments. I know you pride yourself on being able to pierce layers of superficiality. But the bottom line is people are multifaceted; your quick evaluations of them sell them short, and they’ll resent you for it. I’m not saying ignore your flashes of insight and keen perception. Simply don’t accept them as the final word. Especially this week, give people the benefit of the doubt, more than one chance, and points for effort. You’ll be doubly glad you did: First, when they prove your initial impression completely wrong, and second, when they return the favor of allowing you to be as dynamic and diverse as you can be, and are. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Fortune-telling 101: To be a successful—though not necessarily accurate—soothsayer, tell people what they want to hear. Don’t make the mistake of being relentless positive, though. Couch your compliments in critique, like: “You’ve got creative potential but you’ve really been letting it go to waste!” This boosts your credibility tremendously. Now that I’ve exposed one of the cheap tricks people use to manipulate you, you ought to be able to spot more. Bottom line—don’t let anyone dictate what your future holds. Make your own decisions and concentrate on maximizing your creative potential—which you’ve neglected lately. No, really! LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) I’ve placed a food order for you: We’ll start with a cold gazpacho, to remind you to be simultaneously cool and red-hot. Next, vegetarian spring rolls to show you how to wrap up the diverse elements of your life in the most deliciously simple way. Main course: scrumptious ginger-sesame tofu loaf, to reveal how, if you’re properly neutral, you can pick up the best qualities of those around you. Home-baked bread to remind you of things from your past that are still wonderful and pure. Finally, rich chocolate mousse, to demonstrate that while it’s wonderful to fill your plate with incredible things, trying to stuff yourself with too many at once (whether they’re casseroles or life lessons) will just make you sick. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Whew, it was rough going there for a while, wasn’t it? Adrift in a tremendously turbulent sea of self-doubt and questioning, your little boat almost capsized. It didn’t help when your run-ins with sharks left gaping holes in the hull, either. You’re not out of hot water yet, unfortunately, but I believe the worst is over. Land’s in sight, and the ocean seems calm enough for you to limp to shore. Keep on paddling, make sure your lifejacket is strapped on tight, and keep a grip on that knife—you’ll need it to carve up coconuts when you get to your tropical island paradise. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) In the brilliant movie, Being John Malkovich, the main characters discover a physical portal straight to the inside of the title character’s head. It allows them to experience life exactly as JM does; see things through his eyes, taste his food, feel whatever his body feels. Your unhealthy obsession with your own narrow view needs to stop. You could benefit from a crawl down the long, creepy tunnel into someone else’s brain, especially the person you’ve experienced conflict with recently. Once you’ve acknowledged that there’s more than one way to view the situation, you’ve made some progress. When you’ve finally, thoroughly understood the other person’s perspective, you’ve given yourself the tool you need to solve the problem—if there’s anything left to be solved. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You’re so attuned to others at times that your own emotions seem as faint and distant as a crackling signal over a shortwave radio. Oh, you’re in touch with your feelings. You make sure you call them once a week, like a nervous relative. At times you receive their signal with crystal clarity. Your problem is consistency. I’m not saying shut down your connections to the outside world for the sake of your inner one. I’m just saying prepare for more stimulus: As long as
you don’t make deliberate efforts to sabotage it, this week will be like getting hooked up to a high-bandwidth ground line straight to the source.
QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions from page 4
1: E–Rejected the appeal because the board said it had no jurisdiction over the matter. 2: D–Olive Garden and Trader Joe’s 3: C–Pass a boating safety course or its equivalency exam.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) It’s rough when some of the innumerable balls you’re juggling sprout spikes or burst into flame. As if you didn’t have enough to take care of already! But remember, it’s easy to be charming and theatrical and do lots of tricks when everything’s simple and under control. The true challenge is shining despite hardship. So ignore the copious bloodshed from your numerous stigmatic puncture wounds, and the third degree burns on your wrists from the flaming fireballs you don’t dare drop. Smile a genuine smile—remember, you chose this. Trust me: you’re doing exactly what you love to do, even if it hurts a little. Enjoy it. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Respect the cactus: Tough, able to survive in parched, nutrient-poor soil with almost no water, protect itself with formidable spines, and look beautiful in a place where there’s not much living beauty. I admire you more, though, Pisces. Give a cactus anything in abundance (besides sunshine) and it turns yellow and dies. Don’t you dare water that cactus; it’ll kill it. You, on the other hand, have made an art out of thriving on excess, as well as making do on next-to-nothing. The next week promises to provide a little of both. Get ready to exercise your versatility—drink deep, dry up, and bloom. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) It’s easier to keep an even keel when looking at the big picture. When you get swept up in the daily tides of your life’s events is when petty issues loom with the destructive force of tsunamis. That’s why it’s important—especially this week, when the waves are especially big and rough—to keep one foot up on dry land. Why not both feet? Well, that’s one solution, but being the distant observer isn’t very rewarding (or fun) most of the time, especially not for you Aries. So plant a leg solidly on a nearby sand dune and throw the rest of yourself into the fray, and simply enjoy the ride. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Tell the truth. Sometimes we must lie for our jobs, friends, spouses. Fine. This world’s a complicated place and sometimes people need a little glamour to cover its imperfections. But as far as you and your own personal life is concerned, tell the goddamn bottom-line, no excuses, no-holds-barred, honest-togoodness whole truth. It’s your best weapon, your finest healer, and your smartest teacher. Wield it this week. I think you’ll find that while insincerity couldn’t quite hack through the obstacles you’ve been facing, your wholehearted honesty will slice through them like a hot knife through butter. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) As I write in a sunbeam, the delicious warmth creeps up from toes to my legs, and will soon obscure my computer screen. I’m not complaining; it’s incredibly pleasant. When indulging your drive for accomplishment, consider pleasure. It doesn’t have to all be “work.” Seek the most enjoyable way to do what you must. Granted, you might not get as much done in as little time—but since you’re deriving so much joy from your activity, you’ll be able to keep doing—in fact, you may come to enjoy your labors so much that you never want to stop. Now that’s efficiency. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) At times I’ve been so confident in my self-direction that I’ve ignored clear signals from the universe that I was headed the wrong way. Sound familiar? You’re so sure of your own rightness and power that you may be denying your own potential to be even greater and more powerful. Ironically, sensitivity is key. Don’t force things. You’ve got a square block. Don’t jam it into a round hole. I know you’re strong enough to force it through. But wouldn’t it be more elegant, graceful, and satisfying to exercise your patience and wait until you’re presented with the square hole your piece will fit into perfectly?
