MISC DEFENDS DALE CASTLETON I wanted to follow up on one part

of your July 25, 2012 story about Kihei Marketplace (“Big Waste”), which references the Maui Invasive Species Committee and Dale Castleton’s nursery. By 2002, the South Kihei nursery had become overrun with coqui frogs presumably through the unintended importation of infested plants from the Big Island. Even in hot and sunny Kihei, a nursery with constant watering creates ideal habitat for coqui frogs. As many residents have discovered, finding and controlling even one coqui can be maddeningly difficult. During early control efforts, Castleton allowed MISC to use his nursery to test the efficacy of caffeine and also considered using hydrated lime. Use of both products was eventually discontinued due to concerns about non-target impacts. Citric acid later became the control agent of choice, but at some point, there was a communication breakdown and control operations ceased. Through persistence and with county support, an agreement was reached with Castleton to resume aggressive control operations in 2006. We can continue to focus on a time period where things weren’t working, as the MauiTime article does, or we can choose instead to celebrate change and success. Castleton and his nursery became a success story for what is possible with landowner cooperation. Before extensive control operations began, MISC hesitated to make “eradication” the goal because the nursery was so infested. MISC made dozens of night-time site visits to spray infested vegetation. The landowners used an excavator to remove green waste, eliminated debris piles, and provided water and hoses. They worked to prevent the introduction of new frogs to the property. When MISC initiated a Coqui-free Certification program for nurseries and plant providers, Castleton was among the first to sign up. In 2008, after a year of no frogs detected on the property, the South Kihei property became the first formerlyinfested site to officially attain coqui-free status, a remarkable accomplishment given how many frogs were initially present and a huge boost to our staff as a demonstration of what was possible. MISC has since eradicated 11 of 17 coqui population centers

on the island, thanks to consistent funding from the County of Maui, as well as state and federal support. Because MISC has no enforcement authority, we depend on the cooperation of private landowners to allow access. Castleton has become a strong supporter of our work. I would respectfully suggest that both Castleton and the County of Maui should be applauded for helping to bring quiet nights back to the ‘hood.

-Teya Penniman, MISC Manager, via email Anthony Pignataro responds: MauiTime greatly appreciates the work MISC does, but I am compelled to point out that in the story I mentioned Castleton’s troubles with MISC in just a single paragraph. The story also pointed out that Castleton did, indeed, become a success story when he and MISC cleaned out the coqui frogs: “After bad publicity, including an article in MauiTime, he began working with the Maui Invasive Species Committee and today operates a completely coqui-free business,” I wrote. That sentence, in my opinion, “applauded” both Castleton and the county for getting rid of the frogs.

COOOOOOAL! Take a drive down South Pu’unene

passed/through the [Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar] mill (like you were going to see Maui Friends of Library) and look at that big black mountain on your left. That is coal (Coconut Wireless, Aug. 9, 2012). It is used by HC&S to fire the boilers in the mill when they are not burning bagasse. Generally, they run the boilers to mill sugarcane, but they also use the steam to generate electricity for MECO. So while we don’t have a dedicated coal fired power plant here on Maui, we do have an electricity generating facility here that (sometimes) runs on coal. Oh, and earlier this year the mountain caught fire briefly.

-Jerry Isdale, via email I read your article regarding cane burning. I, too, agree it’s a huge problem. There are mornings it looks like an atomic bomb has been dropped in the valley. I also drove by the Pu‘unene Sugar Mill and noticed a huge pile of coal, so evidently they do use coal to fire the mill here. We taxpayers subsidize the mill, guaranteeing a profit on sugar no matter the market price. I am against using my tax dollars to support private business. The investments of our tax dollars by the government has proven again and again to be unprofitable and unwise. Business practice at the sugar mill will never change as long as we subsidize their bad practices. I’ve traveled to numerous third world countries that have outlawed cane burning. Maybe we, too, could outlaw the same.

-Larry Laird, via email

Talk of the Island

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO compared to the nearly 240,000 registered Democrats who cast ballots), well, they’re putting on a good show. Still, Lingle and Hirono are in a rematch! No matter what, Hawaii will send its first woman to the United States Senate. And given the overwhelming registration differences in the 2nd Congressional District, it’s very likely a woman named Gabbard will head off to Washington next year. Of course, all the fanfare and ad-buying and sign-waving begs a giant question: Does all this matter?

DOES ALL THIS MATTER? (NATIONAL EDITION) Mao voted! Why didn't you?

ELECTION? WHAT ELECTION? For most of you around Maui (and Hawaii), that indeed is the question. After all, just 290,724 people voted in the Aug. 11 Hawaii Primary Election (roughly 21 percent of the state’s population). Worries that holding this year’s election in August rather than September would catch voters off guard proved baseless–turnout in the 2010 Primary stood at a miserable 42.8 percent, compared to this year’s similarly anemic 42.3 percent. Primaries are usually ignored by the general population. Just ask Maui County Councilman Joe Pontanilla. Two years ago, during the November General Election, he was running unopposed for reelection but still convinced 28,309 people to vote for him. Saturday he challenged incumbent state Representative Gil Keith-Agaran, but could barely win 1,585 votes, which didn’t even come close to victory. Still, this is how we do things in America. So on Aug. 11, more than person showed up to various polling places around the state and decided that some Democrats–Mazie Hirono, Tulsi Gabbard–were fit to stay in the races for US Senator and US congressional representative, respectively, while other Democrats–Ed Case, Mufi Hannemann– needed to go back to their day jobs (attorney and tourism shill, respectively). We’d feel sorry for Case and Hannemann and all the rest who saw their campaigns go down on Saturday night, though we must also point out that since most campaigns in the state consist of a mix of television, radio and print ads mixed with candidates and their supporters waving at passing motorists from roadsides, it’s hard to believe that any great debate on issues and ideas has occurred. It’s all good now, though. All the Dems got together with their “unity” meals they day after the election and made nice. As for the Republicans (which in this primary consisted of US Senate candidate Linda Lingle and about 50,000 other people,

The question, of course, depends on what you want government to do. If you look in horror at the federal government’s ruthless criminalization of marijuana (even for those who buy weed for medical reasons from a cannabis co-op); continued military occupation of Afghanistan; continued use of the Guantanamo base for indefinite detention of those deemed “terrorists” by the Pentagon; continued use of drone aircraft to assassinate suspected terrorists–including those born in the US and thus United States citizens, normally afforded legal due process and all that; expansion of the National Security Agency to the point that it’s spying on American citizens in ways that, while admittedly unconstitutional, are still kept secret, then elections like these don’t really matter. For all of those issues cited above, there’s a kind a silent, sickening bipartisanship that’s settled across the land. Few candidates of either the Republican or Democratic parties are speaking out against NSA spying or the targeted killing of American citizens overseas or the endless drug war. Concerned about poor people and those who live on the streets? Wondering why your parents seem to be better off economically than you? Looking at your mortgage payments and questioning the wisdom of buying a house? Reading headlines about job creation but seeing only crappy service

industry hiring notices? The Republicans and Democrats have all sorts of platitudes to offer on these issues, but after four years, not much to show for it beyond Democratic promises that they’ll start creating good-paying jobs any day now and Republican insistences that the key lies in slashing government spending (which will, in all likelihood, lead to greater job losses...). Only those candidates with party labels like “Green” and “Libertarian” offer anything approaching honest assessments of our great and miserable times, but don’t worry: the two-party system long-ago trash-canned those people into the “loser” category so few of us will ever pay attention to them. To be fair, there are actual differences between Democrats and Republicans over

Sure, we can fret about the slippery slope that is NSA domestic espionage and targeted drone killings, but few of us need fear them (at least, for now) in the same way we worry over the property tax bill or whether Maui Police Officer Keith Taguma is ticketing cars today. Speaking of the police, have you noticed that they weren’t really an issue in any of the local races? We’ve had a recent (and scary) officer-involved shooting, and yet the happy, smiling faces running for the state House and Senate and our own County Council seem perfectly happy with our constabulary. Never mind that the Maui PD painfully enforces the same Do-Not-Film-Us unwritten rule that seems to govern Mainland departments. Or that state law prohibits–I repeat, PROHIBITS–the release of names of those officers

Happy with these guys?

issues like same-sex marriage and climate change. But on too many pressing problems, the two major parties simply signed non-aggression pacts, leaving the rest of us to deal with it all as best as we can.

DOES ALL THIS MATTER? (LOCAL EDITION) I’ve always believed that, as a matter of actually affecting people’s day-to-day lives, local government was where the real power lay.

Overheard “Gotta give [Akaku election coverage host] Jeff King credit for still rocking out a Magnum P.I. moustache.” -Guy at Mazie Hirono campaign headquarters in Wailuku, Aug. 11

busted by Internal Affairs. Ditto the affairs of the county Department of Liquor Control, the island’s persistent desire to approve vast developments without first securing serious, dedicated potable water sources, our continued economic reliance on tourism (despite the apparent reality that few tourist dollars seep out of the mega-resorts lining the shoreline) and the growing, festering controversy that is sugar cane burning. That last issue especially gnaws at the island. In use since the 19th century, the practice of burning cane in the fields is filthy and wasteful, and yet it goes on despite the growing portion of the population that wants it stopped. But when you ask local officials (and those who want their jobs) about finding some solution to cane-burning that doesn’t involve covering Central Maui with strip malls and housing tracts, you’ll be lucky to get an answer that doesn’t involve a shrugging of the shoulders. See, we like our issues to have two choices: Cane-burning or land development? Burn oil or build windmills? Vote Democrat or Republican? Issues like the NSA’s spying on Americans or the lethal force practices of the Maui Police just don’t lend themselves to easy choices.■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1609n1

Don Guzman isn’t your typical County Council candidate. A private attorney now, he spent five years as a deputy prosecuting attorney and did a few years as a legislative aide. If his Primary Election night party was any guide, Guzman has also mobilized nearly the entire Filipino community on Maui. He’s running one of the most organized campaigns of anyone on the ballot, which is remarkable considering he’s just 42 and hasn’t previously run for anything. As far as what Guzman would do if elected, that’s beyond unknown. His backers include major land developers as well as the environmentalists at the Sierra Club. EYE-OPENING SURGERY

THIS WEEK IN MONKEY CRIME

Fern Cooper, 65, and 13 other cataractsurgery patients arrived at Ontario’s Oakville Trafalgar Hospital on June 25 to learn that they would not receive the usual anesthesia because the hospital had decided to schedule an “experimental day” to evaluate how unsedated patients responded. (The Ontario Health Insurance Plan had recently cut anesthesiologists’ fee.) A topical numbing gel, plus doctors’ reassurances were provided, but Cooper, previously diagnosed with severe anxiety, told the Toronto Star of the terror she felt when, fully awake, she watched the surgeon’s scalpel approaching, and then cutting, her eyeball.

Rhesus monkeys have always posed delicate problems in India, where they are both revered (by Hindu law) and despised (for damaging property and roaming the streets begging for food). In Delhi, the rhesus population has grown dramatically, aided by the Hindus who feed them, and streets and private property are increasingly fouled. However, Amar Singh’s business is good. He owns 65 langurs (apes much more vicious than rhesus monkeys) and, for the equivalent of about $200 per month, periodically brings one or two by a client’s house to urinate in the yard so that the rhesus monkeys will steer clear.

HYPNO-CRISIS Officials organizing a show for high school girls in June in Sherbrooke, Quebec, signed up a 20-year-old apprentice hypnotist to perform, but by the end of his session, he had failed to bring all of the entranced girls out of their spells, including one who was so far under that the man had to summon his mentor from home (an hour’s drive away) to rescue her. The mentor, Richard Whitbread, quickly rehypnotized her and then snapped her out of it with a stern voice, according to a Canadian Broadcasting Corp. News report. He noted that his protege is a handsome young man, which might have unduly influenced the girls.

CHRISTIANITY ON SALE THIS WEEK! Christianity has grown in acceptance recently in Ratanakiri province, Cambodia, according to a June report in the Phnom Penh Post, as up to 80 percent of the population has given up the traditional Theravada Buddhism (mixed with animism) as too demanding. According to local officials, traditional priests typically prescribe expensive offerings, such as a slaughtered buffalo, as the price of improving a relative’s health. Said one convertee, with the money saved using Western medicine instead of traditional sacrifices, she was able to build a house for her family.

According to a June lawsuit by a former student, Western Nevada College’s course in human sexuality was so over-the-top that it might be described as a collection of instructor Tom Kubistant’s erotic fantasies about college-age kids. Among Kubistant’s demands, according to “K.R.,” were keeping a masturbation journal (and ramping up the activity to twice the student’s precourse level), disclosing one’s uninhibited sexual fantasies that in some cases were described by the instructor to the class at large, and conducting discussion groups on the uses of sex toys and lubricants. By the fifth week, K.R. claimed, Kubistant had abandoned his schedule of topics and begun to dwell extensively on “the female orgasm.” Kubistant’s instructions appear to fit the faculty handbook’s definition of sexual harassment.

Fuentes, eager to catch a concert by the rapper Scarface, sent his mother instead to gather the 10-kilo drop. She collected the drugs, but the entire shipment was lost when she failed to use a turn signal and was stopped by police.

STUPID MOM TRICKS Catherine Venusto, 45, was arrested in July and charged with breaking into the computer system of the Northwestern Lehigh School District in Pennsylvania (where she formerly worked) and changing the records of her two children (and while at it, reading private emails of 10 school officials). Venusto allegedly switched a daughter’s F grade to M (for medically excused) and one grade of her overachieving son from 98 to 99.

MOVIES COME TO LIFE Romanian gang members have apparently been apprehended after a series of robberies during March, April and May that resembled a scene from a recent Fast and Furious movie. The gang’s vehicle approaches the rear of tractor-trailers traveling at highway speed, and gangsters climb onto the hood, grab the 18-wheeler’s rear door, open it using specialized tools, and steal inventory, apparently without knowledge of the driver. In one video released by police in Bucharest, the gang members, after peering inside the trailer, decided to take nothing and climbed back out.

THE ARISTOCRAT! Jacksonville, Fla., sheriff’s officers were investigating in July a suspect (not identified) who they believe is responsible for several incidents in which boxes of ready-to-use saline enemas were purchased at a CVS drugstore, opened, used, put back in the boxes, resealed and returned for refund (and which in some cases wound up back on the store’s shelves). The sheriff’s office noted that the man they suspect is in custody, having been arrested on unrelated charges in June. ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1609n3

I

’m sorry that you live on Front Street in Lahaina and have to deal with such a congested area. But you have no right to bully people who park in front of your house. People like me, who needed a place to park so I could go to work. Where do you come off saying that I’d get ticketed? Didn’t happen. You told me I’d get towed, and that didn’t happen either. You gave me eight reasons why I couldn’t park there, but the last was the best: that my truck would be an eyesore. Yeah, my nice, new shiny truck is way more an eyesore than the trash cans, rope and signs you put out there to scare people. ■

Sharing Aloha Through Music

Inside this weekend’s free second annual Lanai Slack Key Festival By Jen Russo

T

he gorgeous grassy field at the Manele Bay Resort on Lanai is warm, but festive. It overlooks one of the best snorkeling bays on the island, a stretch of glistening white sand beach, turquoise water crashing against rocky cliffs and a Jack Nicklaus golf course. This Friday night, local Lanai folk, beach park campers and Four Seasons guests will holo holo here for the Lanai Slack Key Festival. There, they will experience an art form that has been practiced and perfected for the last 200 years in these islands. The name “slack key” comes from a translation of the Hawaiian ki ho alu, “to loosen the key.” Musicians and oral history will tell you there are paniolo roots in slack key playing. It’s a blend of Spanish guitar styled from hired cowboys in the 1800s and Hawaiian rhythms and chants layered and developed over the steel guitar through the years into its very own genre. It began the moment Captain Cook stepped foot in Kealakekua Bay and continues to shape the islands today.

10 AUGUST 16, 2012

Musicians didn’t actually get around to recording slack key until the mid 1940s. Like many gifts of Hawaiian culture, the art of slack key was not at first recognized openly as an art form. It didn’t enjoy the explosion of popularity in the early 20th century like other forms of Hawaiian music. Instead, slack key was passed down through families, a tradition enjoyed in back yards and paniolo homesteads for more than a century. It was Gabby Pahinui who brought the music to the forefront, and he is recognized as one of slack key’s modern forefathers. In recent years, slack key has reached mainstream music appetites, evidenced by Grammy awards for Best Hawaiian music albums going to many contemporary slack key artists. One such student of Pahinui, Kawika Kahiapo (who won the Na Hoku Hano Hano title of slack key Artist of the Year in 2007) performs at the festival this weekend. “At age eight, I started learning ‘ukulele from my dad,” says Kahiapo, who was born on Oahu.”When I was 10, he put a guitar

in my lap that was tuned to G Taro patch tuning. He then leaned over and strummed the strings for me. I now describe that as a spiritual experience–the vibration of the instrument against my body. I wanted to make music from then on. I took no formal lessons, just what my dad taught me, and copying riffs off of old Hawaiian music LPs. Later, I was mentored by Gabby Pahinui. There were many jam sessions in our garage. It’s one thing to aspire and play, but when your aunties and uncles come over to jam, I had a platform to learn and grow. Gabby was there frequently. I picked his brain. Those were some of my favorite moments.” For Kahiapo, slack key music is unique, but firmly rooted in Hawaiian art. “The form of slack key is like anything else Hawaiian,” he says. “We infuse the spirit of our heart and the mana of the land and sky.” The Second Annual Lanai Slack Key Festival will wake up this quiet tourist destination, the smallest of the county’s three inhabited islands

that lies in our Western horizon, connected to Maui by a 45-minute boat ride across the ‘Au ‘Au channel via Expeditions Ferry. This small community of around 3,000 residents swells with pride as it hosts three days of music and artists at seven venues across the island, all of which have free admission. “Four Seasons is pleased to welcome back and host the music and cultural festival with such revered artists gracing our stage to perform for the Lanai community and resort guests,” said Tom Roelens, General Manager of Four Seasons Resorts Lanai. “We understand the importance of the arts and are privileged to be able to assist with bringing the Lanai Slack Key Guitar Festival to the island for all to enjoy.” Maui filmmaker and festival founder Kenneth K. Martinez Burgmaier and his companies Jazz Alley TV and Hawaii OnTV.com partner with the Lanai community and Four Season’s Resorts Lanai to bring the slack key guitar festival to the island. Martinez Burgmaier is well known for his syndicated Jazz Alley TV show that airs Saturday nights at 9pm on

KIKU, the 22-year series has won Best TV series from Billboard Music Awards twice. He says keeping the events free and “bringing the highest quality of entertainment to people who don’t always have the opportunity or funding to go experience great music, have free workshops and meet the artists” are the key elements he builds into the events. The slack key festival kicks off with a gorgeous outdoor party at the resort. There will be amazing epicurean treats for the festival-goers: poke and sushi bentos and fish tacos, all packaged perfectly for outdoor picnicking while you perch on the grass and listen to music. On Saturday, the festival transforms the Great Hall of the Lodge at Koele into a cozy posh slack key lounge. Pupus like their Pulehu ribs, truffle oil popcorn and cheese platters complement the experience. The Lanai resorts do a great job creating the environment where the community and guests and artists can all come together to celebrate the music, but several other local businesses offer slack key jams, including No Ka Oi Grindz, Coffee Works and Cafe 565. The slack key festival got its beginnings on Lanai after Martinez Burgmaier, along with Kepa Maly, directed and produced the History of Lanai for the Lanai Culture and Heritage Center. Martinez Burgmaier also credits the late Uncle Boy Kana’e, who was the emcee at many Jazz Alley TV events, with giving him inspiration and drive. “We hope to create the Oahu Jazz And Blues Festival next, and bring back our Hana Film festival,” says Martinez Burgmaier. “We will do our best to continue with our Lanai Slack Key, Ukulele, Jazz and Film Festivals no matter what obstacles might pop up, IMUA! And as my grandma and Uncle Boy Kana‘e always told me, ‘Mai Makau’–Don’t Fear! Kana’e was part of our Jazz Alley TV Film Productions and a partner in crime with me and Dave Lower (another partner). We talked everyday and he would spend many treasured holiday dinners together with our ohana.” Kana’e brought Martinez Burgmaier together with Benny Uyetake, a local musician on Maui who has been teaching music to Maui’s keiki for more than 25 years. Uyetake performs at many of Martinez Burgemaier’s events and will be releasing a new slack key CD at the festival. He brings another important piece of the musical legacy to these festivals, the keiki. His students from Kalama Intermediate in Makawao, where he has 200 students in the sixth to eighth grades, often attend. Being “a teacher of the arts I feel is a commitment of perpetuating my craft, as my dad and brother has taught me,” says Uyetake. “I had so many great teachers. I think this has created a whole person in me. That’s why I continue to teach children. I also try to expose kids to festivals for the reason of building confidence when performing. Most of these festivals are free [so] families can listen. Kids can watch and be influenced by other great players. Being around great festivals and experienced players encourages kids to strive to be the best in whatever they do or pursue in life. This is true for kids and other seasoned performers.” Uyetake has a special connection to middle school students. He teaches ‘ukelele and his students perform their own songs or songs they learn in class. He says they love the music of Jake Shimabukuro and Kalei Gamiao. Uyetake says Kalama and King Kekaulike have a strong arts education program from teach-

Festival founder Kenneth K. Martinez Burgmaier

ers like Ed Queja, Beverly Barnard, Fred Losano, Casey Nagato, Ken Hattersley and Chris Kepler, who nurture music and fine arts. “I think the public schools have a lot to offer,” he says. “If anything, there should be a highly qualified elementary music teacher. I remember when I was in elementary school we had a teacher teaching music for each grade. It was cool! While I think private

school is a great option, our public school exposes our students to real life experiences. I think we create a ‘whole student.’ How I do this is by including students in all kinds of performances. I prepare not only with a set curriculum, but catering the curriculum to the next venue of performance.” Creating a place for musicians to share

with youth is part of Martinez Burgmaier’s vision. He recalls his tutu Sylvia Baca Martinez taking him to movies and listening to Hawaiian and jazz music, inspiring his career in film and eventually creating festivals around music. Now Martinez Burgemaier and his team produce the Lanai Ukulele Festival, Lanai Slack Key Festival, the Maui Jazz Festival, and the Hana, Molokai and Lanai Film festivals, with more festivals in development. Martinez Burgmaier also continues to produce and direct award winning documentaries like Ki Ho Alu-Keola Beamer and Jazz Colony with Michael Douglas. Most recently, his film Malama Ko AlohaAunty Nona Beamer premiered at the Big Island Film Festival, while Brother Noland beyond the Coconut Girl is in production. Martinez Burgemaier will also host a CD release for Lanai Slack Key Festival LIVE at Koele. This album will feature live performances from artists of the 2011 Lanai Slack key Festival: Dennis Kamakahi, Sonny Lim, John Keawe, Brother Noland, Cindy Combs, Kevin Brown and Uyetake. “The talent these artists have is always an inspiration to me and I just want to share it,” says Martinez Burgmaier. “If I can create a vehicle through my festivals to touch someone who has never experienced live music like we produce at our festivals and events it makes it worth it. We just want to share true aloha through music. I hope maybe one of our keiki who gets inspired at our festivals may be entertaining us in the future.” Martinez Burgmaier says funding for these projects is always a challenge, but he tries not to focus on that or let it stop him. He funds the events through his own own production companies and through local business owners who also see his vision as well as “a ton of kokua from the community.” He says the resorts have offered “tremendous help. They cut all the red tape you have to go through with state and county properties and it’s just so lovely to be on site at these wonderful locations.” The festivals have been hosted at the Four Seasons Resorts Lanai, Grand Wailea, Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Hotel Hana Maui, Hapuna Prince and Ritz Carlton Kapalua. This weekend, Four Seasons will also offer a special festival rate of $199 and $179 per night (call 800-321-4666 and ask for the Lanai Slack Key Guitar Festival package). Lanai’s Slack Key Festival starts this Friday, Aug. 17 and runs though Sunday, Aug. 19. Performances will include John Keawe, Dennis Kamakahi, Brother Noland, Kawika Kahiapo, Ernest Puaa, Kevin Brown, Benny Uyetake, Ekolu Kalama and hula with Hope Keawe. World Champion Stand Up Paddler Ekolu Kalama from Molokai will also teach a Stand Up Paddle workshop at Manele Bay Saturday morning and perform over the weekend. The event is free. As far Kahiapo is concerned, he can’t wait. “Although I did not perform in last year’s festival in Lanai, I look forward to this year’s event,” he says. “I first met Kenny at the festival in Maui hosted by Milton Lau about seven years ago. These festivals always provide a platform for artisans that continue to keep this cultural tradition alive. People aren’t just coming to hear music, they are being educated in Hawaiian culture.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1609L

Broke Da Mouth! A new West Maui food festival aims to pick up where Taste of Lahaina left off BY JEN RUSSO

Broke Da Mouth! Lahaina Gateway Shopping Center Friday - Saturday 5:00 - 10:30

C

hris Mahon and Luis Fuentes have always wanted to do a big culinary event on Maui. So last November, they hatched a plan to launch Broke da Mouth, an foodie event to highlight the island’s food diversity and culture. They wanted to pick up where old Taste of Lahaina left off, but take it to a new level. It was easier said than done. Mahon says that, at first, everyone he contacted was in. “Everybody I asked last year was just as excited as me about it, he says. “But when it came to committing to the event as it got closer, there were a lot of changes. Mahon and Fuentes have paid their dues in the culinary arena, working in West Maui’s food and beverage industry for over a decade. Their contacts and enthusiasm for the event created quite a buzz. In fact, The Food Network’s eminent carnivore Rahm Fama, who hosts Meat and Potatoes, will emcee the event. Broke Da Mouth will also host a “Chopped style cooking competition, which will includes Chef Jaron Blosser from Three’s Bar and Grill, Josh

Marten from Sharky’s as well as chefs from Mala and the new Fleetwoods on Front Street. “Our mission is to go big for the little ones, says Mahon. “We are doing this event not just for the culinary aspect but to also raise money for a children’s medical fund. Our non-profit is Make My Day Hawaii. We will have a silent auction and we have over 200 donated restaurant and retail gift certificates that will be raising proceeds for Sina Kahaialii and Olivia Bianco. Fuentes and Mahon will be manning their own food tent with malasada and coffee, and are excited about the response from other vendors. Restaurants to be featured at the festival include Choice, Maui Kombucha, Bentos and Banquets, Cupies, Bubba Gump, Cool Cat Cafe, Casa Maya, Round Table Pizza, Teddy’s Bigger Burger, Three’s Bar and Grill, Island Froyo, Pulehu Pizza, Crater Dogs, Captain Jack’s, Basil Tomato, Paradise Grill, Olowalu Farms, Nau Luau, Basil Tomato and Tipsy Treats. The festival gives the restaurants a chance to play with dishes outside their menu. Vendors will also be competing for prizes for Best of Show, Most Creative Booth and Soon to be Famous. There will also be a spam and poke recipe contest, with the winner announced Friday night. The festival’s inaugural year will set up in the Lahaina Gateway Shopping Center. Pignataro’s Maui novel, Small Island, which was published last year by Event Horizon Press, is a “noirish story of a bored bartender on the Westside who becomes involved with a nasty world of crooked cops, rich land developers and an ex-B Movie actress with deep problems of her own.” Pick up a copy and get it signed by Pignataro, named Maui’s Best Journalist by the MauiTime (just kidding, that wasn’t a Best Of Maui category, but if it was, he’d totally win). Free. 4-6pm. Barnes & Noble (325 Keawe St., #101, Lahaina); 808-662-1300.

BIOMIMICRY – Biomimicry “studies Nature and attempts to imitate its designs and processes to solve human problems,” states a press release I’ve just received. You can learn all about it at a conversation at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center featuring Bryony Schwan, Executive Director of the Biomimicry Institute in Montana, and Sam Gon, Director of Science of the Nature Conservancy of Hawaii. Their topics will include “conscious emulation of life’s genius as a survival strategy for humans and a path to a sustainable future.” That’s a mouthful. This talk is part three of the “Man/Woman and Nature: Restoring the Balance” public conversation series presented by the Ala Kukui/Hana Retreat and the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. $10. 7pm. McCoy Studio Theater, MACC (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 808-242-7469; alakukui.org.

FRIDAY, AUG. 17 MALAMA WAO AKUA OPENING – The eighth annual Ma¯ lama Wao Akua (MWA) juried art exhibit opens this Friday in conjunction with Makawao’s Third Friday Town Party. Ma¯ lama Wao Akua is the island’s only native species juried art exhibit. Before the exhibit, participating artists will go out on hikes and tours to learn about native flora and fauna, then put their inspiration on paper (or canvas). It’s a great way to preserve Hawaii’s native species through art, and bring attention to conservation efforts. The blessing and awards ceremony will begin at 5pm on Friday, after the jurors’ walk-through. The exhibit will be up until Sept. 16, and gallery hours are 10am-6pm daily. Free. 4pm. Viewpoints Gallery 5979; www.eastmauiwatershed. mauiwatershed.org. (3620 Baldwin Ave., Makawao); 808-572-5979;

DIAMONDS LOCAL MUSIC – They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, and Diamonds Icebar & Grill in Kihei will be your best friend this Friday. Just Plain Weird The Odd Life of Timothy Green is odd but not much else BY BARRY WURST II

The Odd Life of Timothy Green ★★★★★

Rated PG / 125 Min.

H

ere’s one you may not have heard before: the Greens are a married couple (played by Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton) grieving over their inability to conceive. One night, they comfort one another by writing down everything they’d want in a perfect child on individual pieces of paper, placing them in a box and burying it in their backyard. Suddenly, a thunderstorm magically appears only over the Green’s house. Like a newly grown weed, a boy (played by CJ Adams) sprouts out of the ground, with leaves on his legs proof of his backyard origin. The Greens, desperate to become parents, name him “Timothy and try to pass the child off as their own. The whimsy doesn’t stop there, as the Greens live in a town where pencils are the

number one export; this provides viewers with multiple sequences of how pencils are factory made, the kind of scenes you’ll remember from the rare episodes of “Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood, when Mr. Rogers would leave his house. There’s also a dotty, unkind pencil museum manager, played by Diane Wiest as a grouchy old woman with huge glasses. There’s also a silly, half-way cringe worthy scene where the Green family try to show off in public by performing an acapella version of “Low Rider by WAR. I wanted to like this film, as it’s an outin-the-open, pro-adoption fable. You’d expect Timothy’s leafy origins and the many scenes of nature would be leading to an environmentalist metaphor but truly, the complexities of adoption is the film’s core focus. Timothy may be a strange miracle (-gro) child but the way the Green’s raise him, warning him that others may think he’s different and burden him with questions, is in line with what a parent might tell their newly adopted son. One might wonder whom this film is for, as it begins on such a sad note, and seems geared more for parents than their

La Fleur Plumeria

Mmm... barbecued whimsy children. The fantasy angle is subdued, as Timothy sheds a leg leaf every once in a while and strikes a Christ-like pose in the sun to restore his energy but otherwise has no Powder-like powers. It takes a big leap of faith to warm up to a movie like this, which is similar in some ways to “Simon Birch with its takeit-or-leave-it whimsy. It helps enormously that Timothy Green is such an appealing child and that Adams doesn’t overplay him. Garner is really wonderful here, conveying a mother who is both nurturing and overreaching in her good intentions. Edgerton, last seen in the remake of The Thing, does his best to keep up with Garner but he’s not right for the role and lacks chemistry with his co-stars. This is the kind of mild, pleasant and sweet family drama that will appeal to a limited but appreciative audience.

Parents who are pondering adopting, in the process of adoption, or planning to inform their children about the dynamics of bringing a new child into their home may want to share this movie. As a message movie for families who adopt, it’s unquestionably valuable but as entertainment, it’s too gentle to leave an impression. I’ll admit that the love story between Timothy and the town’s wild child touched me and that the final scene left a lump firmly in my throat. Yet, I found much of this forced, not to mention ridiculous and not for anyone who considers themselves even a little cynical. While full of warmth and good intentions, it’s not bad or “odd as much as it’s just plain weird. ■To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1609f

A nearly indomitable will and impressive self-confidence such as you usually possess represents a formidable defense to whatever troubles life might throw your way. Actually, the only real danger to your shining power comes from within. You might trick or delude yourself into thinking you’re weak, or vulnerable in ways that you needn’t be. This week, if you find yourself experiencing pain, fear, or desire—don’t blame the supposed “cause” of your feeling. The only person who can “make” you feel anything is you. So, blame yourself. Or better yet, help yourself.

a valid reason for anything. You get busted so rarely that you’ve forgotten how shitty it feels. Temper your evilest urges this week. That badass readiness you’ve got going on is sexy. But it’s dangerous, too. I’m not advising you to chill out completely—I know how taking chances gets your blood flowing. Just choose your risks wisely. Keep your stunts within the realm of the merely eccentric instead of the outrageously illegal—so if you’re asked to answer for your actions they can credibly fall into the categories of thoughtless, youthful pranks, or slightly offbeat practices of your new religion.

VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Pretend you’ll be going on a trip with a tall, dark stranger. Pack a suitcase full of money instead of clothes and don’t ask where you’re going. Sounds romantic, doesn’t it? Or creepy, depending on your point of view. In fact, you probably won’t be receiving offers to go on exotic adventure vacations with handsome, enigmatic strangers unless you’re very, very lucky. But if you do, have the courage to see it as romantic instead of sinister. You have the power to make it (and anything else that’s happening in your life right now) fit your perceptions perfectly. Why not, then, see it as a good thing?

PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Like all of us, you’ve got a lot of different mental trips going on. Some are short, quick, and mildly disorienting, like airplane travel. Others are comfortable, eccentric, and companionable, like cross-country train journeys. A few are more private, like road trips with your best friends. And some (one in particular) are like deep, slow journeys underground. Since most of your day-today thoughts have been pretty sunny and easygoing recently, you might not have noticed the glimmer that’s appeared in the tunnel of one of your darkest and longest journeys. Go ahead and get your hopes up— that particular adventure is almost over.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Car alarms are useless annoyances. Here’s how to steal a car equipped with an alarm: Act embarrassed but unfazed. Shrug helplessly. Appeal to your audience for sympathy as you drive off shaking your head at the blasted thing. Need to kidnap someone? In front of a crowd? No problem. Ham it up. Let everybody but your victim “in on the joke.” People will actually help you, when properly encouraged with winks and smiles. I’m not recommending that you actually steal vehicles or abduct enemies. These are just minor examples of what you’re capable of this week, just by acting capable. I’d keep it legal, though—your smile is unlikely to do as well in court as it did at the kidnapping.

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) “Pin me down and kiss me for hours.” It’s a request you rarely receive (although your sign gets it more than most) but this week you might hear it a couple times--from more than one person. Yup, your compelling charisma cast a wider net than you intended, and you’ve snagged more than one tasty fish. Are you up for this? Is your bedroom tank big enough for two more? Can you give each one the love and attention s/ he deserves? Only you can decide if you’ll try to keep both of them, or let one of them swim free right away. Before you make up your mind, consider this: Each fish, if properly treated, can grant you exactly one and a half wishes. You do the math.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Last night, I dreamt I gave birth to a water-loving, talking yellow housecat who could metamorphose into a lovable midget girl called Cathy. She wasn’t exactly what I expected my future child would be, but just the same I provided her with a wading pool to play in and a stretchy spandex outfit that would accommodate both her forms. She seemed pretty happy. The things we bring into this world, be they children, relationships, or works of art, rarely (if ever) turn out how we expect. The trick is to love and value them anyway.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) To goad myself into writing, I sometimes give myself an odious ultimatum. Today, it’s: “Write, or thoroughly clean the filthy, filthy kitchen.” Being by nature laid-back (read: lazy) this is often very effective at stirring up my inner muse. It’s still a close call, though. Writing is hard work, despite its apparent simplicity, and the rewards are sometimes more nebulous or obscure than having a spotless kitchen might be. The task you have ahead of you is probably less straightforward than you’d like; nevertheless it still must get done. Get cracking! Start your work, or go scrub toilets.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Sagittarians don’t have enemies; instead they contend with rivals, competitors, and critics. This week, you’ll probably have to deal with several examples of each. Indeed, they’ll seem to be lined up as neatly and methodically as bowling pins. They won’t present much of a challenge, luckily. It’s almost as if they appeared merely to demonstrate your current level of might: both the personal power you now wield, and the strength of your allies. Not only do you possess a fierce, fast bowling ball more than capable of tumbling your antagonists into disarray, all your friends have balls of their own—and they know how to use them. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) I apologize if my horoscope seems a little low-key. See, I’m operating under an enormously heavy burden of guilt this week. One of my best Cap friends got sick while she was visiting me because she was having too much fun. How can I live with myself? I only can by taking this time to remind you: no one has power over you. I’m proud of the way you’ve fully realized this truth when it comes to the people bearing negativity, limitation, and pain into your life. But you could still work on your boundaries regarding those bringing light and fun. There is such a thing as too much. Don’t go blind admiring the sun. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) “Someone dared me,” does not hold up in court as

GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Somehow, you manage to look appealing and glamorous even when mopping up a disastrously overflowing toilet. I’ve seen you successfully flirt while scooping kitty litter, showing off your dishpan hands, or bathing the dog. But just because you’re capable of making such a good impression even in these most unappealing situations doesn’t mean you have to do all your own dirty work. In fact, if you can’t avoid dirty work completely this week, delegate. Your appointee might even do a better job. Most importantly, it will free you to finally do the vital (and sparklingly clean) task you assigned yourself months ago. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) Your intellect is engaged in a to-the-death armwrestling match with your fantasies, while your gentler (but no less competitive, apparently) emotions are playing a high stakes game of boulder-paycheck-scalpel with your sweetest dreams. For a creature so oriented to your misty inner world, it must be jarring to bring your fantastic cloud kingdom here to earth. Nevertheless, down it comes. So your vast hopes don’t have to squeeze inside a studio apartment, better start making the phone calls, wielding the credit cards, and doing all the fancy footwork necessary to make them a solid, life-size reality.
