3. The Maui Democratic Party sent six representatives to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. Which of the following was NOT scheduled to attend, according to the Sept. 1 Maui News? A. Dottie Binder. B. State Senator Shan Tsutsui. C. Hope Busto-Keys. D. Michelle Sewell. E. State Representative Mele Carroll.
Democrat Kyle Yamashita’s a hard one to pin down. He’s been in the Legislature since 2005, but doesn’t chair any committees. He rarely makes headlines, and doesn’t even seem to be operating a campaign website or Facebook page. He introduces bills that do things like prohibiting minors from buying tobacco and alcohol or requiring counties to establish standards for the use of reclaimed “gray” water. In 2010, perhaps sensing vulnerability, Republican challenger Laurie Rinaldi made a (for Maui) rare attack on Yamashita by telling The Maui News she thought her opponent was a “political puppet, relying on his party to prop him up” and saying that he was more concerned with the agenda of the Democratic Party than his Upcountry constituents. Yamashita may clearly be a partisan who supports the same organized labor and health care interests as his party, but apparently his constituents don’t care because they overwhelmingly voted for his reelection that year.

SPEAKER EMERITUS SOUKI TO BE SPEAKER SOUKI AGAIN? Seems there’s a chance that a group of “dissidents” in the state House of Representatives are attempting to replace Speaker Calvin Say with Maui’s own beloved Speaker Emeritus Joe Souki, says the Aug. 31 Maui News. And Souki is taking it at least somewhat seriously: “I think it depends at this point on how much I really want it,” said Souki, who was approached over the phone by anonymous House members saying they had 18 votes for him. “If the majority feels a change is in order, I should consider it.” Souki (who sounds eerily like Elmer Fudd) is one of the most senior members of the Hawaii state Legislature. First elected in 1982 (the same year he opened Joseph M. Souki Realty, his day job), he’s currently running unopposed for what will be his 16th term of office (Say is one of the few members more senior, having first been elected in 1976). Souki rose to the Speaker’s post in 1993, only to lose it five years later to Say, who’s held it ever since. Souki–like Say, a lifelong Democrat–is also one of the more controversial House members. You don’t have to look over Souki’s own personal disclosure forms, on file with the Hawaii State Ethics Commission see why. In addition to income Souki draws from the Legislature, Joseph M. Souki Realty and Social Security, Souki also makes between $10,000 and $25,000 as a “consultant” (read: lobbyist) for the American Chemistry Council. Based in Washington, D.C., the ACC represents a huge number of chemical companies like BASF, Bayer, Chevron Oronite, Dow Corning, DuPont, ExxonMobil and Shell. In 2011, Honolulu Civil Beat wrote about how Souki lobbied the Maui County Council on behalf of the American Chemistry Council back in 2009 when the council was deciding on banning Styrofoam packaging: “Souki made clear that he was testifying not as a lawmaker but as a citizen and
as a lobbyist for the American Chemistry Council,” Civil Beat reported. “Later in the same meeting, Councilmember Michael Molina asked a styrofoam manufacturer if council members might be able to visit the company’s Oahu production plant when they fly over ‘to network with our legislators like Mr. Souki.’” In that story, Civil Beat also reported that in 2010, when the House was deciding on a bill that would charge 10 cent fee on shopping bags–a bill the ACC testified against–Souki asked the House leadership if he could vote on the bill, and was told yes. The personal disclosure form for 2012 also shows that Souki owns 1,620 shares of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. stock and another 729 shares of Hawaiian Electric Industry, Inc. Souki’s also the only state legislator (that I know of) who has a parody website (joesouki.org)–an apparent result of Souki’s vocal and vigorous support of the old, extremely controversial Hawaii Superferry. As chairman of the House Transportation Committee, Souki accepted campaign contributions from Hawaii Superferry Inc. and helped out the company by tabling at least one bill that would have required a full environmental review of the Superferry (something the Hawaii Supreme Court eventually ruled was, indeed, required). To call Souki a Maui political institution is an understatement. And to contemplate his returning the most powerful job in the state House is almost too much for this journalist to bear.
ger Royal Kahana next door. Of course, there wasn’t any fire up the coast at the Ritz-Carlton Club and Residences at Kapalua Bay, but that’s owed in large part to the fact that after three years, there’s still hardly anyone living there. Back in 2009, the plan was to open 84 multimillion dollar condos (because sometimes rich people just don’t like lawns, I guess). Did I mention these places are nice? Not just nice but NICE: “Both Residence Owners and Club Members will enjoy exclusive access to an on-site private 6,100 square-foot beach club and 8,500 square-foot lagoonshaped pool with indoor/outdoor grill and bar,” states the residence’s webpage at Kapalua.com. “Other perks include privileged access to the new 30,000 squarefoot Spa at Kapalua.”
TROUBLE IN PARADISE
According to the website, “RitzCarlton’s management services ensure the surrounding property will remain in immaculate condition, while a 24-hour concierge will offer an array of services found at the best hotels.” And therein hangs the trouble. As of this summer, barely a third of the residences have been sold, reported The Maui News on Sept. 2. And according to
Wow, what a rotten last couple of weeks for resorts both luxurious and quaint on Maui. Sure, the economy is bad, but is that an excuse for fire, bankruptcy and litigation? On Labor Day, there was a serious fire at the Sports Club Kahana (which just remodeled) inside the Valley Isle Resort, leading to scary evacuations of that resort and the Outrig-
a lawsuit recently filed by 10 people who did buy into the project, the developer– a joint venture between Maui Land & Pineapple Co., Marriott International and Exclusive Resorts–stopped paying for maintenance fees that will allow for that “array” of services mentioned above. And that was too much for Ritz-Carlton to handle, and they’ve decided to bail out of the whole deal by Oct. 29. Of course, bad news for resorts is hardly confined to the Westside. What, you didn’t know the Grand Wailea was bankrupt? Has been since February 2011. The 1,500 employees at the beyond-opulent hotel and resort have done a bang-up job of going about their days without letting guests (who can pay $500 and up for a single night) know that the entire financial foundation of
Singapore coming soon?

that hotel is built on, well, sand. But unlike the trauma at Kapalua, there might just be a savior on the horizon: “A Singaporean government investment fund has agreed to pay $1.5 billion to buy the Grand Wailea and three other U.S. luxury resorts that owners Paulson & Co. and Winthrop Realty Trust foreclosed on last year,” reported The Maui News on Aug. 29. You read that right: an investment fund operated by the government of Singapore– a tiny, prosperous Southeast Asian city-state best known for keeping the streets squeaky clean, banning chewing gum and punishing fools who draw graffiti on rocks with caning–is making preparations to take over ownership of the Grand Wailea. And you thought the place was run tight now... ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1612n1

Vegan fusion chef Mark Reinfeld
TALKING STORY WITH VEGAN CHEF MARK REINFELD Mark Reinfeld is a world-renowned vegan chef who comes to Maui about once a year to teach people how to create amazing vegetarian dishes. He has several cookbooks, including Vegan World Fusion Cuisine, which won several awards and was based on his Blossoming Lotus Restaurant on Kauai. Reinfeld has a celebrity following for his food and also teaches online classes at veganfusion. com. The chef will host a two-day vegan fusion event this weekend in West Maui. MauiTime got a chance to see what inspires this vegan chef, and find out where he likes to eat on Maui. MAUITIME: What does Vegan Fusion mean to you? MARK REINFELD: It means incorporating elements from different ethnic cuisines in the same dish or menu. On a deeper
level, it involves integrating the wisdom, sacred sites, beauty and cuisine of the worlds cultures in one presentation. MT: Is being vegan just a food philosophy or does it have deeper implications? MR: I feel a deep connection with animals and a strong desire to preserve the earth’s resources. I also feel that by switching to an essentially plant based diet we can alleviate world hunger. (Most of the grain currently grown goes to feed livestock instead of people). MT: Why did you become a chef? MR: I always loved to cook, even as a child. After completing one semester of law school at NYU, I knew I needed to do something else with my life. My love of cooking returned to me and I started working in kitchens. Around the same time I felt a deeper love for animals and decided to become vegetarian. So basically my entire professional career was as a veggie chef. MT: Tell me something about you I probably don’t already know. MR: Over 10 years ago, I originally came to Kauai on a two-week vacation and

didn’t leave the island for over two years. I fell in love with the island, quit my job on the mainland, sold my car and started creating a new life for myself. Within a couple of months, the Blossoming Lotus Cafe had its beginnings in downtown Kapaa. MT:You travel the world teaching and sharing your cookbooks. What have you published and where do you reside permanently? MR: My first cookbook, Vegan World Fusion Cuisine, was co-authored with Bo Rinaldi and had a foreword by Dr. Jane Goodall. It has won several national awards, including “Cookbook of the Year,” “Best New Cookbook,” “Best Book by a Small Press” and a Gourmand Award for “Best Vegetarian Cookbook in the USA.” I also co-authored The Taste Of The East, The 30-Minute Vegan and The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Eating Raw. My newest book, The 30 Minute Vegan’s Taste of Europe, is due
a chef to learn from them. If you feel a strong desire, you can look into going to a natural foods culinary institute. MT: What are the advantages a vegan diet has over a normal diet? MR: There are too many to mention. Health–many diseases can be prevented and reversed on a vegan diet. Environment–including more vegan foods is one of the most potent forms of environmental activism. And plants use a fraction of the resources, including water, energy, land etc. when compared to a meat-based diet. MT: Will students be vegan experts after two days with you? MR: Students are empowered with some of the basic techniques of vegan and raw food preparation. The way I teach recipes is with a template system. I may go over 10 recipes over the weekend, but students will know how to prepare hundreds of them. It

out in September. I am looking to settle down part time in Maui and part time in Portland. I am in love with Maui! MT: How do you stay on the cutting edge of vegetarian cooking? MR: By researching and writing new books I have the opportunity to continually develop creatively. I am super inspired when I see people make a change to include more plant based foods in their diet, knowing how much this helps their health, as well as the planet and the animals. I would consider raw food preparation as the upcoming trend. Half of the recipes in my workshop are cooked and half are raw. MT: What advice would you give to someone wanting to become a great vegetarian chef? MR: Practice as much as possible on your own. See if you can apprentice with
forms an incredible foundation for future growth in the kitchen. MT: Are there any vegan restaurants on the island you like that provide an authentic vegan experience? MR: Fresh Mint in Paia is a nice restaurant which has an Asian flare. Choice Health Bar has a selection of raw food dishes. Down to Earth provides many standard vegan options. ■

OUR LITIGIOUS SOCIETY In July, a California appeals court reinstated police officer Enrique Chavez’s lawsuit against the Austrian gun manufacturer Glock for its “unsafe” design. Chavez is now paralyzed from the waist down because his three-year-old son got hold of the gun and accidentally fired it, hitting his dad. Chavez, in violation of police policies, had left the gun loaded underneath the front seat of his car, and his son, whom Chavez had not belted into a child seat, was free to explore while Dad drove. The gun is regarded as of safe design by dozens, if not hundreds, of police departments, and the LAPD disciplined Chavez over the incident.

Didier Peleman, 41, is a major-party candidate for the city council in Ghent, Belgium, and, like most, has champions and detractors. Though he has been active in “community work” for 11 years, Peleman is candid about a mental disability that noticeably slows down his speaking and writing and which some voters fear impedes his reasoning ability. His Flemish Christian Democrats Party said it is important that people with disabilities challenge constraints.
SOUTHERN BUDGET TROUBLES A July battle in the House of Representatives pitted austerity-driven members striving to cut $72 million in spending on NASCAR against North Carolina House members determined to keep the money in. (Most NASCAR teams are headquartered in the state, as is the Charlotte Motor Speedway and the NASCAR Hall of Fame.) More than a third of the money would go to the National Guard for sponsoring driver
Dale Earnhardt Jr.The North Carolina legislators believe military recruitment will suffer unless the race-car connection is maintained.
KARMA In July a 30-year-old man suspected of skipping out on a bar bill at the Hilton Garden Inn in Manchester, N.H., did not make it far. As he tried to hop an iron fence, he impaled his leg and eventually required eight firefighters to rescue him using hydraulic cutting tools. And Greyston Garcia, 26, who was cleared of murder charges in January under Florida’s “stand your ground” defense (even though he had chased the victim more than a block to stab him to death after the man took his radio), was inadvertently killed in June by random gang gunfire in Miami.
POLITICAL KARMA Csanad Szegedi, a member of the European Parliament representing the anti-Semitic Jobbik Party of Hungary (a party whose presidential candidate described Jews as “liceinfested”), resigned in August after admitting that he had learned two years earlier that his own mother was (and therefore he is) a Jew. Initially, Szegedi tried to quash the revelation via bribery but eventually resigned, apologized, and vowed to pay respects at Auschwitz.
FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS Third World teenagers often must deal with conscription, sweatshop labor and life as street beggars, but in affluent New York City (according to a June report in The New York Times), a major anxiety of teen and almost-teen girls is having to endure sleepaway summer camp with hairy legs. Said celebrity makeup designer Bobbi Brown, “If she’s going to be in a bunk with all these girls,” and “insecure” about lip or leg hair, “You do whatever you can do to make her feel good.” Seemingly drawing on the Times story, Uni K Waxing of New York City announced a July-only special–with girls 15 and under receiving a 50 percent discount on bikini-waxing.

From a July report on NewZimbabwe. com (motto: “The Zimbabwe News You Trust”): On July 11, as many as 26 women in two villages presided over by Chief Njelele of Gokwe awoke missing their panties, which were later found in a heap down the road, with 17 pairs “positively identified” by the victims. Just as the chief was making arrangements to bring in a “prophet” to find the evil local “wizard,” a huge owl swooped down a few feet away and carried off a dog. “It’s mind-boggling what’s going on in the area,” the chief said. ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1612n3

How You Can Work 30 Days Of Kama‘aina Specials Across Maui In September when our visitors all head back to their homes for school and work it seems like we all go broke. But our Kama‘aina Guide will help you go for broke when it comes to eating throughout the month. Our favorite restaurants, from the little hole in the wall to exclusive fine dining to our resorts, invite and entice us with a great meal and few extra dollars in our pockets. The month of September is full of cheap foodie adventure and we are going to fill your tasty dance card for 30 days with Tahitian prawns, pizza, salad bars, buffets and all kinds of other treats. So keep our Taste of Maui issue with you all month long to give you the secrets to eating that you won’t find on Yelp. If you can keep up, that is.
WEEK 1 We all start the week with the temporary and painful break up from the Saturday on Sunday tryst. It’s Monday, so keep weekend remorse at bay with plans for next week. Pick up the phone and grab reservations for dinner at Lahaina Grill for next Monday where you will enjoy half off their scrumptious modern bistro entrees like their all American braised pork shank with Irish blue cheese mash, or lion paw scallops drizzled in lobster champagne essence. Since you have to wait a week in the meantime, enjoy half off of pizza at Fabiani’s in Kihei, voted Best New Restaurant in Best of Maui. Get settled into the week with 50-percent-off entrees like the green tea lacquered salmon with shiitake and spinach at the Ocean Pool Bar at the Westin Villas on Monday evenings. Treat yourself to a Cool Cat lunch on Tuesday–with 20 percent off, you can afford their creative and sometimes curious burger of the month. Climb out of the week’s mediocrity with help from an Indian dinner at Monsoon India–10 percent off for kama‘aina. Heave ho the humpday blues with a pau hana and pupus at Mai Tai Lounge for 10 percent off. For dinner, you and your work mate are headed to Koho to celebrate the weekday summit with their Wednesday fajita special: just $22 for two. Rest up because Thursdays will run long. Power lunch at Mulligan’s with $6 pupus all day, paired with a good Irish brew of course. With the papers piling up and you have to work late at the office, head straight to Sansei after 10pm with comrades to fill up on rainbow rolls and misoyaki butterfish, all washed down with Kirin till midnight. You’ll overdo it but that’s OK–it’s half off and you’re celebrating the nearness of Friday. Speaking of Friday, gather your besties and head to 100 Wines / Melting Pot for the first Friday of the month. There just $21 gets you a three-course dinner. Continued from page 13 tree when you bring in a nonperishable food item for the Maui Food Bank. What a great way to ease hunger on Maui! It’s now Day 16 in your Kama‘aina Guide and you’re feeling like staying in? How about printing Hawaiian Moons’ coupons off their website or just show it on your smart phone for a dollar off their salad or hot bar and take your healthy lunch or dinner to go. For comfort food Tuesday night, get the early bird seating at Joe’s in Wailea for dinner, where you can buy one entree and get one free. I’m thinking the meatloaf and the chicken and waffles. On Wednesday, we’re thinking of Paia. Milagros offers 15 percent off for kama‘aina during lunch and dinner, and Cafe Mambo’s Maui Cattle Co. burger and beer for $10 is tempting. If Kihei calls for dinner plans, then Kono’s on the Green is offering sushi half off from 3-5pm, then you can buy one entree and get one free from 5-6pm. Thursdays are best for bringing your office meeting to the Kahili’s buffet. Bring in a party of 10 or more and one person eats free. After a hard day’s work nothing could be better than the healthy and fresh seafood and pizza dishes at Honu, where they are still celebrating their one year anniversary by giving you an incredible 40 percent off from 4:30-6pm at the bar. Mala Ocean Tavern will offer it, too. On Friday, if you’re feeling like Chinese, head to Kahana’s China Boat and dine in for 20 percent off (all day) their yummy traditional Chinese cuisine that is never made with MSG. At pau hana, catch the cliff dive ceremony at Sheraton Maui before you head to Black Rock Steak and Seafood, where it’s buy one, get one half off. Fall Movie Preview 10 Fall Movies That Aren’t Twilight!
T
BY BARRY WURST II
he coming of the fall movie season should be exciting to moviegoers for one very huge reason: on Nov. 16, we get Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part II. Do you know what this means? No more Twilight! After Thanksgiving, it’s all over! Of course, the next four months also offer a variety of crowd pleasers, sequels that are eagerly awaited (as well as the ones nobody asked for) and the expected mix of holiday event movies and Oscar candidates. Here’s 10 of the most promising.
THE MASTER Written and Directed by P.T. Anderson, this drama about a religious cult stars Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams. Why It Could Rock: It looks amazing, Phoenix appears to be making a huge acting comeback and, whether the filmmakers deny it or not, it definitely looks like Hoffman is playing Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. Unless: The anti-religion angle winds up turning off audiences. Anderson’s brilliant but strange There Will Be Blood divided audiences and this one looks even more polarizing. Opens Sept. 14.
FRANKENWEENIE Tim Burton remakes his 1984 live action short film into a stop motion animated comedy. Why It Could Rock: This is Burton in his element and the story was ghoulish, charming and touching the first time. Unless: His fans still haven’t forgiven him for Dark Shadows. Opens Oct. 5.
TAKEN 2 Liam Neeson returns to take on more bad guys who mess with his family. Why It Could Rock: The director, Oliv-
ier Megaton, helmed the adrenaline-rush guilty pleasure Colombiana last year and Neeson is everyone’s favorite and most unlikely new action star. Unless: It feels like Death Wish 2, Transporter 2 or any other action series that gets old and redundant really fast. Opens Oct. 5.
CLOUD ATLAS A multi-generational Sci-Fi Action Drama from the Wachowski Siblings, stars Tom Hanks and Halle Berry. Why It Could Rock: It’s R-rated, three hours long, impossible to describe in one sentence, costs $100 million dollars and is overloaded with staggering imagery. They don’t make movies like this anymore. Unless: It’s so crazy and overly serious, it becomes a national punch line after opening weekend. Opens Oct. 26.
FLIGHT Drama about an inspirational pilot, starring Denzel Washington and directed by Robert Zemeckis. Why It Could Rock: This is the first live-action movie Zemeckis has made since Cast Away and his filmography includes Back to the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Washington needs no introduction. Unless: The story, about an emergency aircraft landing by a skilled but intoxicated pilot, may not connect with audiences. Opens Nov. 2.
SKYFALL The return of 007, starring Daniel Craig as... Why It Could Rock: Bond... James Bond. Unless: The disappointment of Quantum of Solace continues and Casino Royale proves unbeatable. Opens. Nov. 9.
Mmm... Hobbit food
Peter Jackson’s return to the world of J.R.R. Tolkien Why It Could Rock: The team that made this special the first time is back and the book is wonderful. Unless: Reports that this two-parter is now a three-part trilogy (with the last film opening in 2014) undermines what a special event this is and comes across like Spaceballs 2: The Search For More Money. Opens. Dec. 19
Hathaway have the acting and singing abilities to pull off the demanding lead roles (the jury is still out on Crowe, in his non-Aussie bar band singing debut). The story packs a punch and there are no other movie musicals on the docket. Unless: The heaviness of the story makes it a turnoff during the Christmas season. It will have to be brilliant to prove the failure of musical Rock of Ages was just a fluke. It’s opening against The Hobbit. Opens Dec. 25.
JACK REACHER
DJANGO UNCHAINED
THE HOBBIT
Tom Cruise in an action thriller based on the Lee Childs series of novels. Why It Could Rock: The director, Christopher McQuarrie, wrote The Usual Suspects and Cruise is back in the neck-snapping, no-nonsense action mode of Collateral. Unless: Audiences fail to see the difference between Jack Reacher or Ethan Hunt and are let down that this isn’t on the massive scale of a Mission: Impossible sequel. Opens Dec. 21.
LES MISERABLES The long awaited film version of the Broadway musical, starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathway Why It Could Rock: Jackman and
Quentin Tarantino’s new action/drama, starring Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio Why It Could Rock: American history, QT-style, with a superb cast and a novel mix of blaxploitation drama with a runaway slave angle. This could finally give Foxx the comeback he’s been longing for. Unless: Sending up Hitler is one thing but taking liberties with the dark period of slave ownership in America’s south is a touchy subject matter, even for Tarantino. Plus, with the sure-tobe-record number of uses of racial slurs, this is likely to be on the year’s most controversial. Opens Dec. 25. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1612f

Horoscope
Sign Language BY CAERIEL CRESTIN VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) You dream you meet your soul mate, who turns out to be a duck. As he cocks his head to allow first one beady eye, then the other, to gaze longingly into your dewy pair, you listen to his tales of the Fowl Revolution. The moment you fervently swear allegiance to his cause you awaken, but the memory of his beaky kiss still lingers. Ducky’s gone, but you still want to honor those feelings (let’s face it: this dream is the closest thing to a “soul-mate” you’ve got going on). Perhaps you could swear off eggs, or make a ritual of bringing stale bread to the park. Do something, anyway—if you can’t even make a token gesture in the name of a dream of true love, how can you hope to make the sacrifices demanded by the real thing? LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Believe me, I want to be in coast mode, too. But you’ve got to spend some time in overachiever mode so you can rack up accomplishments to feel proud about when you’re doing the slacker social thing. So let your popularity slide—this isn’t high school, after all. If this were high school you’d be busy accumulating straight As, awards in debate club, football, and the lead in the school play. So who has time to be the most popular girl in school? Get shit done instead— you’ll have time to rule the In Crowd later. SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) Not everyone can muster up the intensity your sign is infamous for. Sure, it can intimidate some people, or freak them out, or simply repulse them—but it must be respected for what it is. It’s sad whenever I see a potentially lethal Scorpion trying to be cute and harmless. It’s like a vicious, stinging insect trying to masquerade as a fluffy bunny rabbit. It just doesn’t work. Hello, we can see all your sharp, venomous points sticking out. Erase “bouncy, fuzzy, and adorable” from your list of self-descriptions this week. And if you must have those adjectives in your life somehow, there are plenty of perky, sweet, and infernally cute people who love cuddling with snakes—the more poisonous or powerful, the better. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Villains are often misunderstood. In Wicked, a chronicle of the underrated and over-feared “Wicked Witch of the West,” Elpheba’s sad story is told—how she fought against the evil, deceitful, and oppressive usurper (known as “The Wizard of Oz”) and was a champion of Animal (the talking kind) rights, only to be destroyed by poor, ignorant Dorothy, who swallowed the wizard’s slanderous propaganda hook, line, and sinker. What didn’t work for the witch will work for you, though. In fact, you should hope for some good old-fashioned slander—it’ll distract folks from the real issues at hand and leave you free to do some real good. Meanwhile, don’t worry about being perceived as the bad guy— they get laid more often, anyway. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) You’re the stubborn sort who keeps trying to fit the square peg into the round hole, despite repeated failed attempts. That’s very Goat-like of you: keep butting your head at something until it gets the hell out of your way. Sure, you could keep shoving that cube into the circle with some kind of counterintuitive logic—eventually you might be able to wedge your block through. Simple, but not the easiest or most elegant solution. Instead, you could whip out that handy pocketknife you’re always showing off and use it to whittle your right-angle problem (even if it’s something intangible, like your ego) until it’s just the right shape and size to slide smoothly into the hole you’ve been aiming for all along. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) Darien fruit looks like a bizarre cross between a pineapple and The Thing, and it’s supposed to improve your virility. The flavor (it’s like eating blue cheese with a raspberry torte in a public bathroom) leaves a lot to be desired, though. Much of what you enjoy this week may be in the genres of sashimi, liver or lima beans: acquired tastes. Since you’re going to be forced to “sit at the table until it’s all gone,” why not learn to like
whatever’s being forced down your throat? Not what I’d usually advise, but in this case it is good for you— better than almost anything else, in fact.
QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions from page 4
1: B–A “world class yacht harbor.” 2: C–Testing lightweight exercise torpedoes. 3: E–State Representative Mele Carroll.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) I dreamt I had a sentient robot friend with a fetish for shiny trinkets and sweet pastries. Sometimes, he took the form of a clunky, clumsy, R2-D2-like wheeled machine that everyone condescendingly loved. Otherwise, he appeared indistinguishable from a charming, friendly, human jock. Most people feared and distrusted this latter form. I was confused; after all, the same wonderful soul animated both shapes. I thought of you and your wonderful preference for the new, the odd, and the unique. This week, though, reconsider the familiar—lurking beneath the surface of what you think you know is something stranger and more fabulous than you ever imagined. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Patience is something that’s very hard for you Rams to come by, and yet it’s a more precious commodity than gold or dollars this week. There are some things that just can’t be rushed, even if you throw a Bill Gates-worthy fortune at them, like grief, love, or building trust (especially once trust has been broken). So only a serene willingness to simply wait will spare you the virtually limitless frustration and angst you’d suffer otherwise as you tried, in vain, to move the process along. Instead of seething about it, try, dear Aries, to embrace it.
SPIKE’S SONIC PLAYGROUND - FRIDAY’S 4-7PM
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Okay, it’s been a while since you’ve seen Cloud Nine, or even Clouds Four, Five, or Six. By now, you’ve completely forgotten what it feels like to be totally crashed out, in bliss, with your lover, best friend or dog. Summer’s winding down, though, and the cooling winds of autumn are resurrecting those good feelings, warming you from your over air-conditioned state, and venturing over to skies near you. Fall can be depressing for a summer-loving sign like those Leos, but it also seems to produce some very horny, happy and highly magnetic Taureans. Cool. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Sometimes you wish they’d leave you alone. But they’re your friends, and they’re used to letting themselves into your house. They know where you hide your key. They habitually raid your fridge, use your shampoo, and take dates to your bedroom when you’re out of town. Don’t freak out, though. You can set boundaries, you know. But don’t cut them off completely. You’re lucky, if only you’ll realize it; every skin cell in your loofah and lip print on your cups is one more bit of evidence that wants to tell you: you are loved. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) At last! The teeter-totter nature of the past few weeks is finally settling to an uneasy equilibrium. Whew! One week, you were checking your voicemail every five minutes, and counting down minutes until the next party. The next, you were deleting all your messages without listening to them and holing up by yourself with a stack of movies and a gallon of ice cream. Finally, the long sought-after and craved balance is here. Don’t feel obligated to adhere to one of your more extreme patterns (like those I just mentioned), out of habit—not when a more stable equilibrium is just around the corner. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) You’re like a hot coal, burning sullenly, a dull red glow emanating from you everywhere you go. It’s not exactly the cozy warmth of a Cancer on a good day, or the searing dragon-blasts from exuberant Aries. It’s more the kind of thing you want to toast marshmallows over, or use to warm your feet from a safe distance. That kind of stubbornly persistent heat may not seem as immediately useful as other types of fire, but in fact it’s arguably the most practical—your kind of steady, consistent warmth is perfect for heating a house, or baking a cake. If that’s not good enough, just remember—all it takes is a brisk stir and a little breeze and your smoldering glow will spring into flame.
