The Maui Chamber of Commerce recently announced its endorsements for the 2012 General Election. Which of the following candidates did NOT receive an endorsement? A. Linda Lingle (U.S. Senate) B. Kawika Crowley (U.S. House of Representatives) C. George Fontaine (Hawaii state representative) D. Angus McKelvey (Hawaii state representative) E. Mike Victorino (Maui County Council)
RUNNING FOR: Hawaii State Senate, District 6 (South and West Maui) RUNNING AGAINST: Bart Mulvihill BIRTHPLACE: El Campo, Texas PROFESSION: Incumbent ELECTORAL WIN/LOSS RECORD: 7/1 FIRST ELECTORAL VICTORY: 1988
Baker is a reliable Democrat, if only a moderate one. Though she scores very low on ratings sent out by conservative groups like the National Rifle Association and Small Business Hawaii, she recently won just a 64 out of a possible 100 rating from Sierra Club Hawaii (in her defense, she strongly supported those who fought against the old Hawaii Superferry, saying that it needed to comply with the state’s environmental laws). Like all candidates running for office anywhere near South Maui, she supports the construction of a high school in Kihei. “Since I began to represent South Maui in 2002 I have made it my top priority to secure funding to build Kihei High School,” states her own campaign website (rozbaker.com), which is both reassuring and depressing (2002 was a decade ago). Still, she possess a tremendous amount of political experience culled from winning election after election...

COUNTY CANCELS FUTURE PAIA TOWN PARTIES
On Friday, Sept. 14 (officials usually announce bad news on Fridays), County of Maui Office of Economic Development Coordinator Teena Rasmussen declared that there would be no more Fourth Friday Town Parties in Paia. Her reasons are neatly summarized in the following paragraphs, which come from an email she sent to Paia merchants that afternoon (and which was immediately forwarded to us by Gilbert & Associates, a public relations firm retained by the county to promote the island’s various Friday night town parties): “As hard as we all worked to make the Paia Friday Town party a success, we could not overcome the traffic and safety issues,” Rasmussen wrote. “We know that being able to close a road leads to a much safer and contained event. However, with Paia’s business community lining two very busy, main traffic corridors, closing the road was never an option. “Due to this and the numerous concerns that you as merchants have raised about safety, we feel this party is just not the right fit for Paia,” Rasmussen continued. “Our office will be announcing on Friday afternoon at a Mayor’s press conference that there will no longer be a Friday Town Party in Paia, and we will be looking for another venue for the fourth Friday party.” You’d almost think after reading Rasmussen’s email that county officials had invented the whole Paia town party thing. In fact, Paia merchants began holding Friday night parties before the county became
ANOTHER SENSELESS GOOSE ATTACK So on Saturday, Sept. 15, my girlfriend Angie and I visited the 700-acre Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge. Not usually open on Saturdays, they were making an exception as part of an effort to attract more residents. And it seemed to work–the parking lot outside both the visitor’s center and the ponds themselves were full around noon. It really is a beautiful place. After checking in at the visitor’s center, which is full of colorful, informative displays (one of them, titled “Location, Location, Location,” was actually playfully sarcastic) on the rare and endangered Hawaiian coots (‘alae ke‘oke‘o) and stilts (ae‘o) that live at Kealia, we headed down a narrow road to the ponds. There were found dozens of stilts, walking
and chirping in the water, as well as a few coots paddling around. Oh, there was also a giant goose chilling in the middle of one pond. Not a nene, mind you, but a goose like you’d find on the mainland. It was kind of odd, sure, but we didn’t think much of it. Until, that is, we got home and checked out Hawaii News Now. “A Wailuku man has sued Maui County for negligence, claiming he suffered a cut hand and back injury after being attacked by a duck or goose at the county’s Waiehu Golf Course,” reported the news service. “Deputy Maui Parks Director Patrick Matsui said the alleged attack happened near the course’s irrigation pond. Matsui said as far as he knows, just that one bird was hanging out at the county’s lone golf course. After the attack, county officials caught the bird and took it to a bird refuge on another part of the island to release it, Matsui said.” Oh. My. God. Never mind that the County of Maui Corporation Counsel’s office considers the suit by plaintiff Ray Sakamura to be completely baseless. We were far more concerned that we had just seen that (alleged) attack goose firsthand. Had our light bird-watching exercise on a lazy Saturday brought us face to face with a potentially dangerous adversary? Turns out, no. According to Kealia Refuge Manager Glynnis Nakai, the goose we saw has been a resident of the ponds for a few years. “Somebody raised it, and it showed up a couple years ago,” she said. “It’s domestic. It was either dropped off or it came in on its own.” And then we breathed a sigh of relief–until we realized that somewhere, on Maui, there exists right now a goose (or possibly duck) that’s allegedly capable of swift, blinding violence... involved (and could hold such events, albeit on an “unofficial” level). In fact, town party organizers from Paia that were quoted in the Sept. 15 Maui News actually seemed relieved at the county’s cancellation order: “Honestly, in one way, the event had gotten very large for Paia,” said Paia Town Merchants Association board member Daniel Sullivan in the paper. “We ran out of money paying for the off-duty police officers for the event. We didn’t have money for the town functions.” Note to the County of Maui: just because Wailuku Town can put on a killer First Friday party each month, that doesn’t mean other towns across the island can. And by judging from Rasmussen’s comment that her office is already lookParty's over ing at a replacement for Paia (most likely Kihei, which is ludicrous since it lacks an actual town core) means they’re just going to have to learn that lesson again.

LINGLE REDEFINES BIPARTISANSHIP Once again, our little campaign for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by retiring Democratic Senator Daniel Akaka has attracted a little national attention. Earlier it was for Democratic candidate Mazie Hirono‘s appearance in a primary ad with Republican Alaska Congressman Dan Young, who endorsed her candidacy. Now it’s for Linda Lingle’s recent ad spotlighting apparent Democrats who have endorsed her. But according to a Sept. 17 post on the blog Talking Points Memo, at least three of those “Democrats” are actually Republicans: “Lingle must win over independent voters and some Democrats in order to win in her deep-blue home state in November,” reported TPM. “Lingle’s willingness to reach across the aisle, which she highlights in the new web ad and in other spots, is meant to appeal to those voters. But several of the people featured in the ad appear to be Republican officials and candidates for state office.” According to TPM, the “Democrats” in Lingle’s ad include Elaine Slavinsky, who ran for the Hawaii state Senate in 2004 as a Republican, Jan Shishido, who was head of the Maui County Republican Party in 2000 and retired Judge Takashi Kitaoka, who has publicly identified himself as a Republican. Now this is a great campaign! ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1614n1

LOCAL PLUGS BY JEN RUSSO
LAURALEE BLANCHARD WINS VEGAN OF THE YEAR AWARD Lauralee Blanchard of the Maui’s own Leilani Farm Sanctuary will be joining Sea Shepherd’s Captain Paul Watson as part of VegansAreCool.com’s Vegan of the Year Awards. While Watson puts his hide on the line to save the whales, Blanchard helped save a different kind of creature coming across the Pacific: the pig. A former consultant to the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), she helped document the cruel treatment hogs receive when traversing the Pacific for slaughter and consumption. “Every year, thousands of pigs are shipped alive from the mainland U.S. to Hawaii only to be slaughtered upon arrival,” says Blanchard. “During their one-week voyage, these pigs are forced to endure intensely overcrowded and unsanitary conditions; many suffer stressrelated illnesses, injuries and diseases. Those who survive the trip are kept in cages, and then slaughtered. The supermarket chains agreed to stop purchasing pork products from pigs transported live from the mainland U.S. to Hawaii for slaughter, as a result of the WSPA investigation, which I helped document. The supermarkets cited animal welfare as the reason for their change of policy.” Some of these pigs are also imported for military training practices. Blanchard not only documented the treatment of these animals but rallied the local community and spearheaded a petition on Change.org that has topped 30,000 signatures. The petition asked Matson to stop
transporting the pigs. The company refused, but supermarket chains Foodland and Times Supermarket did stop buying pork from pigs inhumanely transported. While the practice still exists, her activism resulted in a reduction of about 7,500 pigs. “The entire process, not just the shipping, is inhumane and unacceptable,” says Blanchard. “These pigs [which she says have cognitive abilities equivalent to a three-yearold human] are raised in cruel conditions on factory farms and then trucked across the U.S. continent before being loaded onto the Matson ocean containers. After arriving on shore, they are brutally slaughtered.” Blanchard also runs a sanctuary for animals that rescues goats, chickens, cats ducks, rabbits, geese, tortoises, donkeys, pigs and a deer. Her farm is currently at capacity, though she does want to expand. “We work to find good homes for the rescued animals, but most of them spend the remainder of their lives at Leilani Farm Sanctuary,” says Blanchard. “The sanctuary is now at the point where it has as many animals as we can afford to take care of. Our future vision is to fence in additional pasture land in order to accommodate more animals. We are working to raise funds for this project and to help with the ongoing care of the animals. Tax-deductible donations can be made on our website at leilanifarmsanctuary.org. We are also working to expand Leilani Farm Sanctuary’s humane education programs and outreach programs for people with special needs.” Blanchard believes being a vegan is an important part of her philosophy, and the sanctuary offers assistance for people interested in changing their lifestyle. The sanctu-
ary also offers tours on Wednesdays and Saturdays for $20. “A vegan lifestyle is beneficial for optimal human health, protection of the environment, and the reduction of animal suffering,” says Blanchard. “The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) resource panel released a report stating that a global shift towards a vegan diet is vital if we are to halt climate change and other environmental problems. Adopting a vegan diet is easy and we are happy to help! Leilani Farm Sanctuary provides vegan starter guides for anyone who is interested.” Another way to get involved at the sanctuary is to volunteer on Monday or Wednesday mornings at 9am. Blanchard needs assistance with barn cleaning, gardening, carpentry, animal grooming, general maintenance, manure duty, window washing, installations, repairs, etc. Chores on a farm are plentiful. I hear volunteer days do offer a good vegan lunch, and reservations are required. Email info@ leilanifarmsanctuary.org to participate. Blanchard says she’s elated to appear on the Vegan of the Year list, and is inspired to accomplish even more in the future when it comes to veganism. “Death at a slaughterhouse is never quick and painless,” she says. “The reality is that over 90 percent of farmed animals in the U.S. are raised on factory farms in intensive confinement. The Animal Welfare Act excludes protection for animals raised for food. There are no laws requiring factory farms to provide animals with spacious environments, clean surroundings, fresh air or sunlight. “The animals are regarded as mere commodities,” she continued. “They are treated like machines with no concern for their pain or suffering, and are deprived of exercise so that all their energy goes toward producing flesh, eggs, or milk for human consumption. Factory-farmed animals are fed growth hormones to fatten them faster and are genetically altered through selective breeding and gene splicing to grow larger or to produce more milk or eggs than they would naturally. Their miserable lives end at the slaughterhouse where they are frequently dismembered while still fully conscious.”
FIRST MAUI BEACH YOGA DAY COMING SOON Lauralee Blanchard at Leilani Farm Sanctuary
Wailea Beach, which fronts the Grand Wailea, will be the site of Maui’s first Maui Beach Yoga Day in honor of National Yoga Month. Next Sunday, Sept.

30, join Grand Wailea trainer and lululemon ambassador Nancy Lawrence for a free beach yoga event. “We wanted to create an event that promoted community and outdoor fitness while taking advantage of our beautiful island home,” says Sharon Ogawa, director of the Grand Wailea’s Spa Grande. “No matter what your fitness level is, yoga is the ideal exercise routine because it works the entire body through simple movements and proper breathing.” Hatha yoga is a low-impact type of practice focused on breathing, easily picked up by those new to yoga or anyone recuperating. Lawrence will lead a Hatha yoga class with help from fellow yoga ambassadors Amber Lee, Jennifer Lauer and Brenna Miles. Lawrence has been the lead fitness and yoga instructor for Spa Grande for 20 years. Following the class, Chelsea Dimin will lead a meditation session that will take participants on a 10year envisioning of their ideals. There will be raffles, prizes and a contest will be held for the person who brings the most people with them. Participants will sign in at 6:30pm at the Grand Wailea (six years old is the minimum age to participate). Towels will be provided, and attendees can bring their own mats. Prizes include a lululemon yoga mat, gym bag and a Spa Grande training session. “Sometimes the way to a healthier and fit lifestyle starts with the support of family and friends,” says Dimin. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1614n2

RESEARCHERS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN Scientists from the Primate Research Institute at Japan’s Kyoto University reported in an August journal article that they had given helium gas to apes (gibbons), which, predictably, made their voices goofily high-pitched. But it was not a fraternity prank or lab assistant’s initiation–it was a way for the scientists to determine whether the famously sonorous gibbons could yell just as loudly at a higher-thannatural pitch. The gibbons succeeded, showing a rare talent similar to that of the world’s greatest human sopranos, who maintain their booming amplitude by altering the shape of their vocal tract, including their mouth and tongue.
CULTURAL DIVERSITY The seaside city of Qingdao, China, is (as described in August by NPR) “not a vacation community for superheroes” even though many beachcombers wear masks while lounging and sunbathing. The garments are “face-kinis,” or light cloth coverings that protect against the “terror of tanning.” While Western cultures celebrate skin-darkening, many Chinese associate it with lower-status, outdoor occupations, and a pale skin suggests having lived a pampered life.
FINE POINTS OF THE LAW Italy’s highest court ruled in July that one man’s telling another, in front of others, that he has “no balls” can be criminal conduct that warrants payment of damages. Said Judge Maurizio Fumo, such a comment places at issue male virility as well as competence and character. And in August, after an eight-day trial, a court in Hamburg, Germany, awarded money damages to a man who called another an “asshole” (“arschloch”) in a parkingspace dispute and fixed the payment at the equivalent of about $75,000. (Courts in Germany can base the amount of damages on the transgressor’s income.)
WOMEN’S RIGHTS, SAUDI STYLE A Saudi Arabian agency is raising the equivalent of about $130 million to break ground in 2013 on an entire city to be managed and staffed by female employees, with three more such cities being contemplated. Raising women’s employment rate is a goal of the kingdom, where until last year, nearly all jobs were held by foreigners and Saudi males, including jobs as sales clerks in women’s lingerie shops.
MONEY CAN BUY YOU FREEDOM A centuries-old practice of China’s upper crust continues today, reported Slate. com in August, except with a bit more

circumspection. Rich and/or powerful people on trial or convicted can still get away with hiring replacements to serve their sentences, but (because of ubiquitous Internet videos) only if the replacements facially resemble the perps. Since the rich person winds up paying for his conviction (though a relatively small price), Slate called the practice (“ding zui”) sort of a “cap-and-trade” policy for crime.
LATEST RELIGIOUS MESSAGES Prayer failed for Leslie Burton, 26, and Terrell Williams, 22, in St. Paul, Minn., in July. As they sat in the backseat of a police car while officers searched their own car, the pair, touching hands (according to the cruiser’s video camera), quietly begged divine intervention that the guns in their car not be found. However, not only were the guns spotted, but a subsequent strip search revealed a baggie of suspected Ecstasy pills in Williams’ rectum.
STEVE JOBS IS APPARENTLY DOING WELL In August, an abbot at the Wat Phra Dhammakaya Buddhist temple in Bangkok, Thailand, reported that Steve Jobs is doing well now as a “mid-level angel.” He was reincarnated as “a half-Witthayathorn, half-Yak,” which the Bangkok Post took to mean that Jobs continues to be a “giant” and a seeker of scientific knowledge and apparently resides in a “parallel universe” near his former office in Cupertino, Calif.
WOMEN’S RIGHTS, GERMAN STYLE The mayor of Triberg, Germany, touted his town’s new public parking area in July by noting that 12 of the spaces were wider, and well-lit, compared to the others, and would be reserved for female drivers. The harder-to-access “men’s spaces” required maneuvering at an angle around concrete pillars. “(M)en are, as a rule, a little better at such challenges,” the mayor said, predicting that the men’s spots would become a visitors’ “attraction” for the town.
LEAST COMPETENT PEOPLE Lowell Turpin, 40, was arrested in Anderson County, Tenn., in July after he became jealously enraged at a stranger’s photo on his live-in girlfriend’s Facebook page and, demanding to know who the man is, allegedly punched her in the face and smashed her computer. According to the police report, it was a campaign photo of Mitt Romney. ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1614n3

DANIELLE DANIELLE BERGAN WAS ONCE A SUCCESSFUL MALE SALES EXECUTIVE FOR THE MAUI CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. SHE’S ALSO BATTLED SUBSTANCE ABUSE, SUICIDAL DEPRESSION AND CRIPPLING GENDER IDENTITY ISSUES. WE TALK STORY WITH HER ABOUT HER REMARKABLE LIFE TRANSFORMATION AND NEW MEMOIR. BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO
IT’S ALWAYS OKAY TO BE ME By Danielle Marie Bergan - 2012 Self-published, $16.95
W
hen Danielle Marie Bergan was seven, she used to climb an apple tree at her home in central New York and daydream about her life. In that tree was a caterpillar that she would watch. Day after day, she’d climb the tree and watch the caterpillar. Then one day, she climbed the tree, but her caterpillar friend was gone. Looking up, she saw a delicate butterfly flying above the tree. That story–which is something of a
10 SEPTEMBER 20, 2012
metaphor for Bergan’s life–does not appear in her new book It’s Always Okay To Be Me, but it could easily have provided an excellent prologue. Bergan’s book is a detailed, earnest memoir of her life, the vast majority of which was spent as a man, Daniel Francis Bergan. As early as the age of three (she was born in 1956), Bergan writes in her eminently readable, though often dark, book, she knew she was a girl trapped in a boy’s body. Growing up in an Irish Catholic family made life difficult, but it was nothing compared to what would later happen to her. Combine gender identity issues with a father who died young, a lifetime of alcohol and drug abuse, self-destructive behavior, crushing depression and suicidal thoughts,
you pretty much have Bergan’s book. Since the late 1970s, Bergan has made her home on Maui. At first a bartender on the Westside, where she drank and snorted more lines of blow than I could count, she eventually found therapy (both for her drug abuse and identity crises) and got a job at the Maui Chamber of Commerce selling memberships–at which she apparently excelled. Cresting on her new found success, as well as therapy that encouraged her to embrace her female side, she began the long, expensive and painful process of gender reconstructive surgery. In July 2010, she flew to Trinidad, Colorado and went under the knife and medically became a female. Her painful recovery lasted until November of that year.
Her self-published memoir, which can be uplifting and depressing in the span of just a few pages, is a quick read (I was easily able to tear through it in 24 hours). To find out more, I sat down with Bergan on Friday, Sept. 14 at the MauiTime office: MAUITIME: First off I want to say that the book is quite good. How long did it take you to write it? DANIELLE BERGAN: I started in December 2010. I just wrote down a few things. But I seriously started in February 2011. I wrote on weekends or whenever I had free time. I finished it after I got laid off (from business services outfit Kila Kila, which closed in 2011). Then I worked on it full time as I would any job.
clothes entirely], I was sober. She helped with that, and we had a frank discussion. After my surgery, she said she was sorry, and that those times she said to get rid of my clothes were trying to get me off the fence. That was huge. She’s not my therapist now, but she’s a friend. There were ways she helped me with my self-esteem. I don’t think that I could have taken the job at the Chamber if it wasn’t for her. Kevin and I did not hit it off at first. But no one had ever presented things like he did. He suggested that I just be who I was–oh, my God, what a revelation. MT: When they decide to make this kind of transition, most people only have to face their friends and family. But when you decided, you were still working for the Maui Chamber of Commerce, which meant facing their board of directors–people like Bill Russell and Charlie Jencks. They had hired Daniel, and now you were going before them as Danielle for the first time. DB: They were the biggest supporters I have. I told [former Chamber executive director] Lynne [Woods] when [Chamber exec] Pamela [Tumpap] was talking to the board. She was dumbfounded, but then said that she could see it. To a person, the Chamber board was supportive. Bill called me later and said he admired my courage. He said that he had never questioned his identity, and couldn’t imagine what I had gone through. They wanted me to stay. MT: But you didn’t. DB: I was offered a great opportunity at Kila Kila. You know, I showed up at a Chamber party later. I was scared to death, and one guy laughed at me. The gentleman found out later, and came up to me and apologized. He felt pretty bad about it. If you’re doing business on Maui, you can’t really show me BOOK SIGNINGS what you think. others who had gone through it, and they said the first thing to do was change my name. Hawaii’s not too bad. But you can’t change your gender until after surgery. I went to Social Security to do my name change, and then I went back after surgery to change my gender. Then I changed my bank accounts. I forgot about having to register to vote, so then I went to the Registrar of Voters. I tried to be proactive. The university I went to [St. Bonaventure’s in New York] wasn’t too happy about it. MT: Why did you go to them? DB: I wanted to have my school records changed. I petitioned the State of New York to change my birth certificate. They wanted a detailed report from Dr. [Marcie] Bowers [who performed Bergan’s surgery]. But then they refused because they said they don’t recognize the Hawaii Land Court [where she changed her gender]. They said they only accept Supreme Courts or county courts, but we don’t have county courts. So I said that if the State of Hawaii recognizes me, and the federal government recognizes me, then they should recognize me. But they said no. I haven’t asked the Supreme Court yet. I’ll go to the Attorney General first and see if they can do something. Sorry, I feel passionate about this. I’ve felt this way since I was born. I want records to say I was born a female. St. Bonaventure has changed my name, but not my gender. MT: Your book is alternately exciting, funny, chilling and depressing–especially concerning your family, who also didn’t seem pleased with your decision. DB: I come from an Irish Catholic family. Had my mom lived, I think she would have come around. I know my father understood something was wrong. My dad was much like me–sensitive, quiet, but he could also be gregarious. He was a big drinker, but he was also extremely sensitive. I grew to be more gregarious like my dad and brother but it took a while. He always seemed to treat me differently. He had no problem hitting [her brother] Timmy with a belt, but it pained him to hit me. He hit me only two or three times. One time he just told me to scream while he hit the belt against the wall so my mom wouldn’t know. My family is coming around. I had a good time with them at Christmas last year. It’s been tough for my step-father. They’ll still call me Dan, though they’re not meaning to. I was into sports in high school, and my step-father supported me. He is still struggling with it. It’s not a question of love–I know he loves me. I think my brother will eventually come around. If he doesn’t, I think it will be his loss, to be honest. MT: Speaking of coming around, do you still run into people on Maui who knew you only as Daniel? DB: I do. It’s more difficult for them than for me. But it can be difficult if it’s a male I know who still treats me as a man. It takes time. I’ve learned to try to be very, very patient. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1614L

San Francisco. The acoustics in the dining room reverberate so that conversations over the cement floors and the clanking in the open kitchen keep the room sounding lively. I like the new leather chairs and the high tops along the window–perfect for Paia peoplewatching from inside their climate controlled dining room. The Laws wasted no time putting together their dream team at the restaurant. Helen Hong is the new manager, Lokelani Sribura is the baker,
James Walworth is the chef and James Shoemaker is at the bar. The menu went through a complete redesign, with family-style dining at dinner, and an added Asian flair with more focus on farm-to-table and share plates. “We have had the pleasure of having both Helen Hong and James Walworth cater many of our private parties and knew we found some true gems right under our noses,” says Yulie. “We asked them to join us on our adventures here in Maui and found that a

oana Cafe has been a mainstay dining option in Paia for many years. It’s known for their delectable pastries, breakfast-lunch-dinner schedule and nightlife. So when they closed last May, I was gravely disappointed. But my fears proved short lived when Moana reopened a few weeks later under new owners David and Yulie Law. “My husband and I are entrepreneurs, mainly in the product design sector in the mainland,” says Yulie. “We moved to Maui over a year ago and since our companies are able to run on its own or can be worked remotely, we wanted to live here on the North Shore. Since our kids are young and ready for school, we knew we had to set our foot down somewhere, and have chosen Paia to call ‘home.’ We have made some major changes initially to the dining area. We removed some of the dark booths by bringing in some fine tables, chairs and bar stools. A fresh coat of paint always does wonders to brighten up the place. Add in some air conditioning units that work, and we retuned and replaced our kitchen appliances so that they all work properly and efficiently!” With its new look, the bistro now has a clean, stylish, urban vibe, like I just dropped into a Noe Valley cafe in
family friendly restaurant was desirable using the bountiful fruits and vegetables grown locally. It’s right up their alley as far as food styles, philosophy and presentation. People are bored of the same old, same old. We’re constantly trying out different flavors, introducing it to our patrons, using what’s seasonal and being able to just be ‘out there’ with our combinations of flavors that explode in your mouth.” Sribura bakes an array of pastries that you can get anytime from the case at the door. They also offer European pastries and American standards. But every time I’m there, the mac-nut sticky buns with cream cheese frosting fly out the door, and at dinner the Lilikoi cheesecake seems to appear on all the tables. Sribura says she graduated from the Maui Culinary Academy and continues to absorb tricks of the trade from her colleagues. “Creating specialty cakes has to be one of my favorite things to do,” she says. “It’s art work that is specifically made for that customer. Seeing their visions made into a reality, and knowing that I was a part of that special occasion makes me happy.” Hong and Walworth both contributed family recipes to the dinner menu, making an innovative mix of share plates, sides and appetizers. It’s a build-your-own meal concept, with starters like puffed nori, salads, chicken sticks and the ahi poke tostada staving off hunger while you wait for the big share plates like Thai orange curry, Continued on page 15

Chef James Walworth with his signature Korean Pot Roast
Continued from page 13 Korean pot roast or tamarind pork ribs. The share sides feature lots of veggie options picked from the bounty of Hawaii farms: zucchini and onion, green beans, braised greens, kimchi and purple sweet potato. “Both my paternal and maternal sides of my family have a love of food, eating, cooking and experimenting,” says Hong. “The puffed rice nori came from an Aunt in Korea, as a gift only with instructions to fry until crisp and puffy. I had no idea what the result would be and was pleasantly surprised. My mother likes to play with flavors. She incorporates what is accessible in the US and applies it to Korean food. The kimchi we have at the restaurant is based on my mom’s basic recipe but with room and encouragement to experiment. For instance, instead of using Asian pear or apple to start the fermentation, we use pineapple, which
Pastries baked fresh every day
results in a tangier kimchi. We also played with Daikon radish kimchi with orange juice and zest and are always looking for the next vegetable to kimichi. The resulting dinner meals you can put together at Moana could be different each time you go. The puffed rice nori is one of the most unique dishes I’v tried, and the kids at our table loved it so much that we had to order it twice. The seasoned seaweed sheets are somehow battered and deep fried as crisp as a potato chip. Their breakfast menu stuck to the homestyle favorites and offer no surprises. Starting at 8am, you can get home fries, eggs, pancakes, French toast, omelets with fresh veggies and savory meats, loco moco and Eggs Benedict (breakfast is served until 2pm). For lunch, there are healthy standards, salads, soups, Saimin, wraps
burgers and sandwiches. Chef Walworth says his most popular dishes are the ahi poke tostada, pork ribs flavored with tamarind and cinnamon, a salad of papaya and avocado tossed with ribbons of lacianato kale and the curry. “My family cooked at home the majority of the time,” he says. “My parents were always growing a vegetable garden even in the face of short growing seasons, grasshopper plague, or other obstacles we faced. The food wasn’t super fancy, but we had an appreciation for fresh produce and also for exploring different cuisines. I owe a lot of my interest in cooking to my family. My dad did most of the cooking at home, and during the summer when we managed to harvest some zucchini, he would sauté them with onions and garlic and top them with Parmesan. It was a favorite
of mine, and since Maui produces fresh zucchini and onions almost year round, I had to put it on the menu, but with the twist of black garlic.” The Laws are excited to be a part of the Paia scene. They hope their philosophy at the restaurant will serve them for years to come. “We have five core values,” says Yulie. “Fun, collaborative, unpretentious, explore and evolve. We are doing that at the front and back of the house, in our food, the location, the physical space... basically in everything we do and touch.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit MauiTime’s food blog at: mauidish.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1614d1

End of Watch ★★★★★ Rated R / 109 Min.
T
he day to day lives of two uniformed police officers Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Pena) are captured by multiple cameras, as Brian claims to be making a documentary for his film class. The two investigate reports of local disturbances in dangerous neighborhoods and accidentally discover a series of gruesome crime scenes that point to powerful suspects at large with dubious connections. While finding one shocking discovery after another, they maintain strong social lives after work, in which Mike’s wife Gabby (a scene stealing Natalie Martinez) is expecting a baby and Brian is committing to a serious relationship with his dream girl (Anna Kendrick). As their investigation gets scarier, they realize how much danger they’ve put themselves in. Here’s the first “found footage” cop
movie, an angle that the movie plays fast and loose with, as many scenes are captured by hand held cameras, while other moments couldn’t have been captured by anyone but the film’s cinematographer. But I liked the always enjoyable give and take between the two leads so much that I was able to forgive the found footage angle, which comes across more like a gimmick than an innovation the movie really needs. The first-person point of view scenes do little beyond making this feel like an R-rated episode of Cops. Gyllenhaal’s opening narration, about the life of a police officer and living on “the thin blue line” is so familiar that you expect Inner Circle’s “Bad Boys” to start pounding on the soundtrack. What’s refreshing and downright bold is that, in addition to Gyllenhaal and Pena giving such commanding and surprisingly funny performances, the movie is actually on their side. These aren’t just good cops, they’re great cops. I can’t remember the last time I saw a film portray law enforcers who came across as believable, likable, heroic and
recognizably human. After years of movies about corrupt policemen or super cops like John McClane Refreshing & downright bold and Riggs and Murtaugh, here’s a movie about two the clichés you’d expect from an urban police officers who share a brotherly action movie, but the story around them love for one another that matches their is surprising. Without giving anything love for the job. away, the ending is so brave and unconGyllenhaal has been exceptional in ventional that you can feel the filmmakart films for years but this film, along ers shy away from it by adding a closing with Source Code, reminds one how at scene the film doesn’t need. ease and charismatic he can be in a HolNot one of the great cop movies, but lywood movie. Pena, one of my favorite the story will draw you in, especially as character actors and outstanding in films the scope of the investigation becomes ranging from World Trade Center to greater than either officer anticipated. QUIZunderstood ANSWERS ...to questions from page 4
1: A–Walter Ritte BY CAERIEL CRESTIN VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Lately, you’ve been craving imperfection. You’ve enjoyed your toast a little burnt, your clothing slightly frayed and your apartment three degrees away from an ideal temperature. It’s not that you’ve finally accepted that the world isn’t perfect, or that you’ve become that much more appreciative of those imperfections (though you have). No, it’s just that you’re inching closer to the realization I’ve been goading you toward all along. You can’t be the missing piece to every puzzle. The irony is that once you accept the imperfections in yourself, you’ll fit that much more perfectly into this most imperfect world. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) You spend your days busily zooming from one responsibility to the next. You respond to the needs and demands of others like a good worker bee in a well-ordered hive responds to the instructions of her fellows. She dutifully—one could even say delightedly—flies to flowers as directed, and gathers the nectar she’s supposed to collect. But when you’re conked on the head by the plummeting coconut of one of your own desires, you end up buzzing around in confused circles for a while. That’s been your life recently. But now that you’ve had time to recover from the impact of this want that has made itself so forcefully known, what will you do about it? SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) What’s the point of flowers, ultimately? Or butterflies— why are they so colorfully beautiful? From a prosaic viewpoint, one could dispassionately explain the evolutionary advantages of such characteristics. And speaking from the same platform, one of scientific evaluation, one could just as easily dispel your self-doubt by pointing out that you, too (with all your flaws and virtues), are the glorious product of millennia of evolution, with just as much purpose and beauty as a flower or butterfly. I happen to believe that there are many more levels to the “why” of a butterfly’s glory (and yours), beyond mere evolution. I also like to imagine that flowers and butterflies enjoy being what they are. Shouldn’t you? SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Get caught making faces at yourself in the mirror. It also could be fun to politely reply to rudeness or insult with vicious imprecations in a sweet-sounding foreign language (French is good for this). Don’t practice kicking your own ass this week, nor implicating yourself in plots you’re innocent of, just because they sound cool. Your sense of fairness is as out of tune as an abandoned piano, and missing quite a few notes. My prescription to help you play in key? Choose one: A. Long, deep soul kisses, if they’re available. B. An intimate dinner, cooked by you, for all your closest friends. C. A good, hard, cleansing cry—followed by a huge helping of your favorite dessert. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) Reflect on the oyster, that underrated and overexploited little mollusk. They have to evade and resist prying fingers and hungry mouths eager to pluck them out of their protective shells and slurp them down, raw. (Blech.) If they avoid this gruesome fate, they’ve still got to cope with the bits and bobs that end up inside their shells and irritate their tender flesh. The bad news: you feel a lot like these underrated creatures lately. The good news: your constant worrying and fretting about your past—every careless word, remembered failure and missed chance—will yield results. You ought to be able to permanently expel a few of those irritants, and they won’t be as ugly or anticlimactic as gallstones or eye gunk. Nope. This week, you’re spitting pearls. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) When I close a really good book, I often feel emotionally shipwrecked. I’m not usually responding to any specific events in the novel. It’s just that finally leaving characters and their absorbing reality is almost like being abandoned on a deserted island, or perhaps being returned to civilization after a long, lonely stay on one. It’s a mixture of relief and loss, similar to how one might react to the death of someone who’s suffered a prolonged, painful illness. This week you might experi-
ence a strange blend of emotions that aren’t necessarily comfortable sleeping next to each other. Then again, you’ve had some pretty odd bedfellows yourself.
2: C–$462.50 3: E–Mike Victorino (Maui County Council)
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Last night I dreamt I was invited to a New Year’s party. Shit, I thought to myself, autumn really flew by! Seemed like it was still summer yesterday, and we still had a few months to go! Luckily, several people had pulled together a fabulous outfit for me (it was a costume party) and taken care of every detail of my attendance. When I woke up, I thought of you—will people still be taking care of your shit (including the fun you have) come 2013? I’m worried you’re not determined enough to actually get it together. Luckily, you have a few months to prove me wrong. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) We’re all in love with that legend-in-your-own-time image you’ve cultivated around yourself, that of the swashbuckling hero, the rebellious philosopher, the truth-seeking activist. The only problem is: those are all relatively lonely positions. Sure, the lonesome cowboy/ girl might have a part-time trusty sidekick, but that doesn’t do much to foster a sense of community, does it? What can you do to change this solitary destiny? Engage others, of course! Easier said than done, but this week, concentrate on how someone of your unique talents and status might bring people together, instead of just impressing/intimidating them. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) You’re capable of accomplishing just as much as your fellow Earth signs, though your methods differ. Virgo flits constantly from duty to duty, as quick and nervous as a hummingbird. Capricorn executes tasks as calmly and efficiently as a robot. You take longer to get going. Like your animal symbol, the bull, you know all too well the pleasures of relaxing in the shade of a cork tree and chewing your cud. But once in motion, you’re nearly impossible to stop. Since the obligations of the weeks ahead aren’t going to complete themselves, you might want to start stretching your legs and sharpening your horns: it’s almost time for a full-on charge. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) This is a good week to start growing a ’fro that requires you to duck to pass through doorways, or to wear padded underwear or shoes three sizes too large. Heck, put on one of those adorable Sumo wrestler fat suits. Anything that helps you to take up more space than you’re accustomed to would be good. I perceive that your achievements have been limited and compromised—not by your ability or efficiency, but by not giving yourself enough room to move. This week, get used to taking the space you need to do what you’ve got to do. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) The world isn’t always such a comfortable place. Your feet ache from standing in lines, your ass is punished by hard plastic seats, noise pollution violates your thoughts. That’s why it’s so easy to understand and appreciate your powerful nesting instinct, your inordinate fondness for an abundance of pillows, thick, terry cloth bathrobes, hot bubble baths, good food, mellow wine and tender romance. You’re just trying to make a few soft places in a sometimes hard, angular and imposing world. This week, you’re likely to miss the cozy nooks you’ve created for yourself—but not that much, as you’ll be busy discovering and enjoying some of the sweet comfort zones made by other homebodies like you. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) You’re back-to-back with your fiercest opponent. According to good ol’ Western tradition, you’re both supposed to walk 10 paces in opposite directions, turn and shoot. Fastest draw wins. I know you’re not excited that things gotten this extreme, but you’ve also never been great at that cheesy movie banter that extricates our Hollywood heroes from situations like this. Bad humor isn’t your strong suit, fortunately for the rest of us. It never works in real life anyway. So how can you defuse the situation? Try swallowing your pride. It should go down easier than any bullet, either literal or figurative.
