I wish to extend a compliment and congratulations to your recently news article “Gifts of Aloha” (Oct. 25, 2012). Being a technical writer, the depth of your story is worthy of notice. I hope you don’t mind if I extend this compliment to my SURFPUNKS.COM blog. Keep up the excellent news reporting!

COUNCILMAN DID MORE NICE THINGS THAN WE NOTICED (This letter refers to the Candidate! feature in our Oct. 18 issue) But [Councilman Don Couch] did some other good things–He voted for a [resolution] to repeal PLDC at the first pass (still in process). He voted for a [resolution] to label GMOs (I think). And today he voted to take back out the 390 acres that the council put into urban growth boundary in Makena (someone was doing favors for a developer friend when they put it in urban). Unfortunately he was outvoted by [Mike] White, [Gladys] Baisa, [Mike] Victorino and [Joe] Pontanilla. So yeah, Couch has been prodeveloper but he seems to be acting a little bit more in the public interest lately. His opponent is a tea party spiritualist

who channels the dead or some such and was involved in a fake endorsement email that was sent around. She supports cane burning.

A TASTEFUL REVIEW IN THIS PAPER? REALLY? Mr. [Barry] Wurst’s movie review is succinct and tasteful (“Ben Affleck scores with real movie about fake movie,” Oct. 18, 2012). I was wondering if this movie would be worth the time and money and now that I have read the review, I just might go see it. Thanks MauiTime for staffing good people like Wurst; his opinion is appreciated.

EH EH BRAH! (This letter refers to the Eh Brah! column which ran in our Oct. 18, 2012 issue.) I’m pretty sure food products containing laxatives should be labelled with the according warnings else they could kill someone with dehydration (yum, healthy drink, then a hike… oops, not enough water! Pass out and hope someone finds you). Food products without such warning, however much a “cleansing effect” it is supposed to have, should be considered poison, like many other medicines are unless used properly.

Talk of the Island

BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO

ANOTHER DOOMSDAY FAKEOUT As I write these words, the East Coast is still recovering from Hurricane Sandy– one of the largest storms ever recorded in the North Atlantic. There was severe flooding in New York and Atlantic City. The storm’s total death toll in the U.S. is more than 50, and it’s knocked out power for an estimated 8.2 million people. Kinda puts Saturday night’s little tsunami scare into perspective, right? Of course, none of us knew at the time that the tsunami waves, though real, were actually quite small and wouldn’t hurt anyone or damage anything, beyond the business generated by a few Halloween costume parties at various bars. See, at 7pm on Saturday night, my girl-

warning buoys between here and Canada. (Hey, Larry Ellison: Wanna help Maui County? Pay to ring the islands with a grid of buoys.) At least the whole thing was over before the network affiliates could develop some cheesy “Tsunami Watch 2012” news graphic. Close to 10pm (the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that the first waves would hit the beaches at 10:28pm), my buddy and I got bored and decided to walk down Keonekai to South Kihei Road. Not to stand on the beach like an idiot, but just to take measure of the situation. After filling the bathtub with water (county officials said they were shutting off the water as a precaution), we headed out. We hadn’t even reached Keonekai yet when we saw a Maui Police cruiser race towards Pi‘ilani Highway, its flashers on and something

like it was much later in the evening than 10pm. Along the way we passed a homeless guy, who clearly had been rousted out of his Kam Beach hideout. “Where are we supposed to go?” he asked us. After telling him he’d be fine where he was (the county’s disaster maps showed the inundation zone stopped at South Kihei Road), he plopped down against a telephone poll. Down at the lower road, it was even eerier. Because the gas stations had closed, the whole place was deserted. A few cars drove past us, heading up the hill. One driver helpfully told us that we’d better leave, and we thanked him for the advice. After standing around awkwardly in the dark for a few minutes, and the doomsday sirens started wailing again, we walked back up the hill. Passing Keonekai Park, I saw that a few sprinklers were on. And that was pretty much it. We watched more TV, and then around 1am, when it was pretty clear nothing bad was going to happen (in Kihei or anywhere else on the island), our friends walked home. Just before bed, I went into the bathroom to empty the tub, only to find nothing to drain since I’d failed to completely close the drain plug.

WMSA ‘UNILATERALLY CANCELS’ LEASE The wave that wasn't

friend and I had another couple over for dinner, and seeing our landlady in the kitchen window telling us that there was just a massive earthquake in Canada and the whole state was now under a tsunami warning was sobering. And don’t ask what we thought when we saw that scary computer model showing all of the tsunami’s projected energy directed at Maui like some Finger of Doom. So we did what most people who live well outside the evacuation zone do: we popped open some beers, turned on the TV and watched a bunch of sleepy local news anchors stare at loons walking on Kuhio Beach in Waikiki. The fascinating part was that even though Weather Kahuna Guy Hagi and the rest of the Honolulu news people kept repeating that disaster officials were predicting that the highest waves would hit Maui–specifically Kahului Harbor–no one actually had anybody reporting there. Turns out there weren't any tsunami

unintelligible blaring from its loudspeaker. “Did you understand what that cop said?” three neighbors asked as we walked by. We had no clue. Shrugging our shoulders, we headed down the road. It was very quiet out–

It’s hard to convey exactly how dire it is over at the Wailuku Main Street Association (WMSA). Let’s start with the fact that the County of Maui is holding their most recent $243,000 grant hostage. That means the WMSA has no money coming in, which would doom any nonprofit out there. But when you add the fact that the state Attorney General’s office is investigating the WMSA for all manner of bad

WMSA property?

behavior (including mismanagement of their taxpayer-funded grants, violations of numerous bylaws and alleged political activity that could ultimately doom their tax status), things begin to look absolutely apocalyptic. But don’t feel bad for WMSA board chairman Tom Cannon. The guy is a rock. You’ve all seen Monty Python And The Holy Grail, right? Well, Cannon is the unflappable Black Knight. Even if you chop off his arms, he counters with, “It’s just a flesh wound!” Anyway, with all that money not coming into WMSA, Cannon (who says he had to lay off longtime executive director Jocelyn Perriera), has had to make some cuts. Apparently, that includes lease payments on their old Wailuku office, which surprised Jonathan Starr, the former WMSA Board member who owns the building they were renting. “They have a lease that runs for a while, until next January,” Starr said. “They said they can unilaterally cancel a lease. It’s unusual–I’ve never had a tenant say that they can cancel a lease without permission from the landlord.” Starr said their reason for bailing was simple: Because Starr and his wife Helen Nielsen “outwardly and publicly demonized” and “publicly defamed the honorable reputation” of the WMSA in both Maui County Council hearings and in a letter to The Maui News, they–and not the WMSA–negated the lease. “It’s kinda peculiar,” Starr said. Cannon did not respond to a request for comment by press time. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1620n1

It's a muralicle!

OFFICIALS TO UNVEIL NEW WAILUKU MURAL DURING FIRST FRIDAY The new mural on the side of Request Music (10 North Market St., Wailuku) will be officially unveiled this Friday, Nov. 2 during the First Friday town party. Designed by Eric Okdeh, the mural is part of Hui No’eau’s Maui Mural Project in collaboration with Wailuku’s rebranding initiative ReWailuku. The wall is made of corrugated sheet metal, so workers first installed a false wall to create a more suitable canvas for the artwork. The mural represents conversations with people from the community that touch on problems affecting Hawaii as well as portions of life here that residents want to protect. “The mural addresses challenges that were identified by the Maui community such as interrupted families as a result of displaced Maui prisoners [being shipped off to the mainland for lack of space here], developing tourism Meccas on burial grounds, the negative health effects of cane burning, as well as opportunities identified by the Maui community such as ho‘oponopono, preserving native Hawaiian plants and resources, building intergenerational relationships,” said Kelly McHugh, Hui No’eau’s Youth Programs and Marketing Manager. “This is a collage of information collected over four months by a very skilled artist collaborating with an inspired educational

team at Hui No’eau.” In addition to expressing the views of the community, the mural is expected to have positive effects on the surrounding area as well. “It might create a more welcoming environment for visitors, a more pleasant/interesting environment for workers and residents there, create a warmer gathering place to congregate, eat lunch, meet neighbors, engage in conversation,” said McHugh. “Enable new relationships by setting a ‘common-ground’ foundation. Empower other artists to launch their own public art initiatives on Maui. Spark a new form of dialogue where discussing social issues is less taboo. Prompt further community investment in the area. Inspire passers-by to become more engaged in the visual arts, unlocking their creativity and building new bridges to self-empowerment, selfesteem, community building, problemsolving. It could create world peace!” -Oliver de Silva

at the high school level. Maui has three students who have just been named finalists. Congratulations are in order for Jade Chihara from Lahainaluna High School, Tiana Lee Camarillo from Seabury Hall and Kristen Raleigh from Kihei Charter School. The Wendy’s High School Heisman had 45,000 seniors who applied, and out of that 190 applications came from Hawaii, which have been narrowed down to 19 that comprise the state’s finalists. Students recognized as finalists have embodied the Heisman attributes of hard work and dedication through achievements in athletics as well as academics and community and school leadership. The High School Heisman has been around 19 years. On Nov. 5, one male and one female finalist from Hawaii will be chosen to represent the state. From all the state winners, there will 12 national finalists. These 12 will compete for the National Winner title on Dec. 7. The National finalists get recognized in an ESPN televised Gold medal ceremony and each receive $2,000 for their school. But only one male and one female will be chosen for the top honor, and those students receive a $500 gift certificate to Wendy’s and a $10,000 donation from Wendy’s to their school. To view all the state finalists, go to WendysHeisman.com.

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM RAT LUNGWORMS! Want to keep the Rat Lungworm from coming to dinner? Since the world is filled with parasites, and the best way to protect yourself from them is by not ingesting them in the first place. A joint educational effort between several agen-

cies invites you to learn how you can avoid the Rat Lungworm, aka Angiostrongylus Cantonensis, a parasite that has now appeared on some of the Hawaiian Islands. You can contract the lungworm by eating raw snails or slugs off produce. This parasitic nematode lives in the lungs of rats, which is then passed on to slugs and snails that may come in contact with the rat feces. These slugs or snails may come into contact with your uncooked produce and, if not washed properly and accidentally consumed, may end up causing severe symptoms from headache and nausea to coma and death, though some people never exhibit any symptoms at all. There will be a free informational seminar on Thursday, Nov. 8 from 5:40pm to 7:30pm at the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) cooperative Extension Building on the UH Maui Campus. Speakers will include Dr. Rob Cowie, UH Manoa Pacific Biosciences Research Center; Dr. Sue Jarvi, UH Hilo College of Pharmacy; Dr. John Martell, Hilo Medical Center; Takako Nakaaki, epidemiology specialist, Maui District Health Office; and Jim Hollyer, UH Manoa CTAHR Program Manager and Farm Food Safety Coach. The evening will cover a bit more about the biology of these nearly invisible nematodes and how to manage it better in gardens and farms and when consuming produce. For more information contact Luisa Castro, educator for CTAHR office, at 808-244-3242 ext. 232. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1620n2

HORSELESS JUMPING Horse show jumping is a longtime Olympics sport, but for the last 10 years, equestrians have been performing in “horseless” show jumping, in which horse courses are run by “riders” on foot (who, by the way, do not straddle broomsticks). According to an October report in The Wall Street Journal, an international association headed by retired pro equestrian Jessica Newman produces at least 15 shows a year, with between 40 to 130 competitors galloping over jumps that vary from two to four feet high (five feet in “Grand Prix” events), with the “riders” graded as if they were on horses (timed, with points off for contacting the rails). Explained Newman about the shows’ success: “It’s just fun to be a horse.”

SNAKES! Surviving a cobra bite in Nepal is simple, some natives believe. If the victim bites the snake right back, to its death, the venom is rendered harmless. One confident farmer bitten in August in Biratnagar told BBC News that he went about his business normally after fatally biting his attacker and survived only after his family convinced him that perhaps the custom was ridiculous and hauled him to a hospital.

Typically, the baluts have barely begun to develop, sometimes allowing a “lucky” diner to sense in his mouth the crackle of a beak or the tickle of a feather.

Malaysia’s Education Ministry has held at least 10 seminars recently to teach parents and teachers how to head off the pesky homosexuality that their kids may be in “danger” of developing. According to officials, sure signs are when boys wear “V-neck” or sleeveless shirts or carry big handbags. For girls, the most obvious sign is “having no affection for boys.” Last year, according to a September Reuters report, the government set up camps specifically to teach “masculine behavior” to “effeminate” boys.

WHALE DISCHARGES IN THE NEWS In August, schoolboy Charlie Naysmith of Christchurch, England, taking a nature walk near Hengistbury Head beach, came upon a rocklike substance that turned out to be petrified whale vomit–which, to his surprise, proved worth the equivalent of from $16,000 to $64,000. “Ambergris,” a waxy buildup from the intestines of a sperm whale, produces a foul odor but is valuable commercially for prolonging the scent of a perfume. (Actually, after floating in the sun, on salt water, for decades, the ambergris on the beach was smooth and sweet-smelling.) ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1620n3

GENERAL ELECTION CANDIDATE ENDORSEMENTS!

I

t’s that time again. Time to take stock of America, think about the challenges facing this great nation, look deep into our hearts and decide which person who probably didn’t get enough parental affirmation when he or she was an infant should write our laws and stand around like they actually run the place. It’s Election Time! Woohoo! Of course, we understand if you want to keep the cheering to a minimum. We live in tough times. Unemployment is high, wages are stagnant, the climate is going haywire, drug-resistant bacteria is on the rise, the Drug War is wasting billions of dollars, the war in Afghanistan is a bloody fiasco and our own government is spying on us (but won’t tell us how much because it’s a secret, and says we can’t sue to stop it because we can’t prove the spying is going on, because it’s secret). Next year, regardless of who wins the presidential election, taxes will go up, government spending will crash and the slim growth we’ve seen this year will likely come tumbling back down. And that’s just the nation. Here on Maui, massive development projects are springing up at a time when fresh water sources are drying up. Traffic is getting worse, housing prices are rising again and though record numbers of tourists are flocking here, they don’t seem to be spending money beyond the borders of their respective resorts. So get out there and vote! Look, if you don’t want to vote, that’s cool. Just keep the complaining to a minimum if things don’t go your way. Because when you don’t vote, you lose your voice. To make things easier for you, we’ve taken the liberty of endorsing candidates and ballot measures. After great consideration, long hours spent reading and the flipping of not one but several coins (okay, we jest: we read, at most, an hour), we now present our choices for who should be running everything. (Note: We’re not including races where Maui County Council incumbents are running unopposed and are basically already elected–Bob Carroll, Elle Cochran, Mike White, Riki Hokama.)

U.S. President Jill Stein Talk about a depressing race. Yeah, we guess Democrat incumbent Barack Obama has done an okay job, but to think that we have to overlook a miserable eight percent unemployment rate, the prolonging of the unwinnable war in Afghanistan, the absolutely unconstitutional targeting of American suspected terrorists by drone missiles, the mindless prosecution of the Drug War and a massive increase in spying against Americans by the National Security Agency. Then there’s Republican Mitt Romney, who’s a member of that feudal clique of rich guys who have somehow convinced themselves that government spending that benefits poor people is immoral and the best thing we can all do is lower their (the rich peoples’) tax rates, which are already pretty low, historically. The bonus with him is that we doubt he’s ever truly believed in anything, beyond that which might increase

10 NOVEMBER 1, 2012

his share of wealth and power. Look, if you want to waste your vote on one of these jokers, go for it. It’s still sorta a free country. But there are other legitimate candidates out there advocating actual platforms that reflect real issues affecting Americans. Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate, wants to end the Drug War, the war in Afghanistan and the whole federal government’s incessant spying on American citizens (to say nothing of those beyond unconstitutional drone attacks). Of course, he also wants to do away with Obama’s health care reform (the incumbent’s only real plus, though it is fairly weak by our standards). That’s why we’re throwing our inconsiderable weight behind Green Party candidate Jill Stein. She pretty much agrees with Johnson on the Drug War and national security stuff, but she wants more health care reform, not less.

U.S. Senate Mazie Hirono

far with just one loss, which is pretty damned impressive. A moderate who enjoys considerable support from the island’s organized labor groups, she’s reliable and effective (also, pro-gun and pro-smoking groups hate her, and that’s fine by us). As for Republican Bart Mulvihill, he told The Maui News four years ago (during his first attempt to grab Baker’s seat) that his having sold “2,000 cars” was one of his qualifications for office.

State House, District 10 Angus McKelvey Talk about an easy call. Democrat Mazie Hirono has been in office since 2006, and seems to be doing a fine job. She’s very liberal–way to the left of President Obama, to be honest–which provides a nice contrast to the caveman views on war, abortion, climate change and immigration that seem to affect American politics today. Also, and this is a big point, she is not her challenger–Republican Linda Lingle–whose eight years as Hawaii governor can only be considered a success if you ignore the disastrous Superferry, Furlough Fridays and her craven trash-canning of the civil unions bill.

U.S. House of Representatives, District 2 Tulsi Gabbard

Democrat Angus McKelvey has been in office since 2006, and he seems to have grown into an effective legislator who genuinely wants to do well for his district by bringing more clean energy and high-tech industries to Maui and Hawaii. As for his opponent, Republican Edward H. Kaahui, he says he wants to fix road to Lahaina so we can have more development at Kaanapali and Pulelehua. Yes, we need better roads in and out of the Westside, but to serve the current population.

paper put it), “resurrect the constitutional monarchy that was overthrown by the U.S. in the late 1800s.”

State House, District 13 No Endorsement Let’s see if we have this straight. Democrat Mele Carroll, who has held this office since 2006, has time to run for reelection but not for telling voters where she gets her campaign contributions (she’s been repeatedly–as in many times–scolded and sanctioned and fined by the state Campaign Spending Commission for missing campaign finance reporting deadlines), and she’s running against Republican Simon S. Russell, who has no political experience but wants to do things like pass “Legislation mandating labeling GMOs” (good) and “Legislation banning spraying our atmosphere without an EIS” (not so good). We’re just going to pass on this one.

Maui County Council: Wailuku-WaiheeWaikapu Joseph G. Blackburn II

State House, District 11 Kaniela Ing

Yes, count us among the many who worried that liberal, pro-same-sex marriage Tulsi ( Democrat) was just a Trojan Horse for her gay-baiting state Senator dad Mike (who used to be a Republican but is now a Democrat). But an EMILY’s List endorsement and her personal assurance to us (in the form of a Tweet) that she does indeed feel that same-sex couples have a right to get married have secured our support. As for Republican challenger Kawika Crowley, that dude needs to stay in politics, perhaps running for some Hawaii Island county council seat or something. Seriously, people like that need to stay in the public eye.

State Senate, District 6 Roz Baker

Republican incumbent George Fontaine is a nice guy, but he’s not a strong legislator (an ex-cop, he couldn’t even spell “sheriff” correctly on his own website). But we’ll be honest: Ing was not our first choice for a replacement. That honor went to Boys & Girls Club exec Colin Hanlon, but he lost badly in the primary election. While we had no problem with Ing’s vehement opposition to the proposed Kihei Mega Malls (though we have to admit, of all of Maui’s towns, Kihei’s long history of poor planning and general ugliness make it ideal for a mega-anything), we were concerned about his youth and the amount of time he’s actually spent in the district. Going back over a few news articles about him have greatly reassured us, though we reserve the right to smack him around in the future if he messes up.

State House, District 12 No Endorsement We’re all supposed to love and support Democrat Roz Baker, right? By our count, she’s won seven elections so

Democrat Kyle Yamashita has held this office since 2005. He doesn’t chair any committees, and doesn’t seem to be much of a presence in either the Legislature or county. Republican Ekolu Kalama is a stand up paddler and musician with no prior political experience. Back in July he told the Molokai Dispatch that his main goal is to (as the news-

Sigh. Mike Victorino is still the incumbent, still the best friend of Maui’s unions and land developers and still (Dodger!) Shane Victorino’s dad, and for a lot of people on Maui, that’s enough. But Victorino has always struck us as being someone who ran for office because of what he could be, rather than what he could do. Now challenger Joseph G. Blackburn III is a former firefighter and police officer, but he also has a good side (kidding! Hey, you think churning out these endorsements is easy?). In fact, Blackburn recently did something that shocked us: he wrote a letter to the editor of The Maui News apologizing to voters for giving out bad information during a candidates forum. On Oct. 18, the paper published the letter. When was the last time you saw a politician do that? We can’t ignore integrity like that.

Maui County Council: Kahului No Endorsement Again, we have to pass. Alan (Al) Fukuyama is a small businessman who failed to win County Council seat representing Lahaina in 2008 and 2010, and is now trying his luck at this open seat. We think he should try something else entirely. Don S. Guzman is an attorney and former prosecutor who has lined up bipartisan backing from the island’s political powerhouses (both the ILWU and Sierra Club Maui endorsed him) and Maui County Mayor Alan Arakawa, planner Chris Hart, planning firm Frampton & Ward, former Prosecuting Attorney Ben Acob, current county Finance Director Danny Agsalog, consultant firm ArakiRegan & Associates, developer Stanford Carr and builder Chad Goodfellow have all donated money to his campaign.

Maui County Council: South Maui Don Couch

hold the power on Maui love incumbent Gladys Coelho Baisa, and they always will. Libertarian Richard H. Pohle has all the makings of a great candidate–how many retired physicists do you know running for office?–but he’s unfortunately running on just one issue: ending the Upcountry Meter List, which he says discriminates against small landowners trying to develop their property and prevents “distributed growth.” Pohle may be onto something with the meter list controversy, but council members have to deal with a wide variety of issues.

Maui County Council: Molokai Stacy Helm Crivello We’re giving Don Couch the nod, not because we approve of his votes (he sides with developers on issues like the Maui Island Plan Urban Growth Boundaries far more than we find comfortable) but because he’s good at being a council member and gives his constituents a fair shake. On this one, we’ll agree to disagree. As for Alana Kay, his opponent, she wants to bring “innovation, efficiency and honesty” to Maui County government. She uses intriguing buzzwords, but lacks political acumen and administrative experience. That she’s also a “spiritual medium” is interesting, but not why we’re giving her a pass.

Maui County Council: Upcountry No Endorsement The public employee unions and land developers who

OHA Hawai Resident Trustee No Endorsement We don’t know enough about the Hawaii Island candidates–Robert K. Lindsey, William (Willy) Meyers and Edwin L.P. Miranda–to make an informed endorsement in this race.

OHA Kauai Resident Trustee No Endorsement We don’t know enough about the Kauai candidates–Dan Ahuna, Keola Alalem Worthington, Liberta Hussey Albao, Jackie Kahookele Burke, Kanani Kagawa Fu, Haunani Pacheco, Sharon A. Pomroy, Ronson K. Sahut, D. Kaliko Santos, Billy Kealamaikahiki Swain and Leland K. (Radar) Yadao–to make an informed endorsement in this race.

Here’s another tough race, but for the pleasant fact that both candidates are unique and capable and contribute to Molokai’s community in different, extremely helpful ways. Stacy Helm Crivello is the executive director of the island’s Hale Ho‘okupa‘a Substance Abuse Treatment Center. Wilson (Manuwai) Peters is a respected kumu and founder of Hawaiian Language Immersion Program (HLIP). It’s a close call, but Crivello’s practical experience is just too valuable to ignore.

OHA Molokai Resident Trustee No Endorsement Even though there’s just one candidate– incumbent Colette (Piipii) Machado–we don’t know enough about her to make an informed endorsement in this race.

Old Kula Community Center PO Box 1291, Kula, HI 96790

OHA At Large Trustee Walter Ritte

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs is one of those background institutions that most people have heard of but few can explain. Put simply, OHA administers community grants and low interest loans to Kanaka Maoli seeking a better life. The office studies issues pertinent to them, and lobbies the legislature. There are a variety of candidates running for the at large seat, but only one clear choice. Haunani Apoliona is the

incumbent trustee. Keli‘i Akina is a minister. Cal Lee is a former assistant coach at the University of Hawaii. Lancelot Haili Lincoln is a bit of a mystery–even the League of Women Voters didn’t have any information on him in their exhaustive candidate run-down, though they did have a picture of him wearing a jaunty hat. Keali‘i J. Makekau is a condo site manager in Honolulu. Most are probably satisfactory candidates, but we have to go the last candidate, Walter Ritte. He helped found OHA back in the 1970s, and served on its first board of trustees. But these days he’s a wild card who takes his slow growth activism on Molokai seriously (and he has the criminal convictions to prove it). He’ll bring life to the OHA board in ways no one can really predict.

OHA Maui Trustee Rose Duey When Judge Boyd Mossman resigned his Maui OHA seat early this year, Governor Neil Abercrombie appointed Carmen Hulu Lindsey, a realtor, to the seat on an interim basis. At first, she promised not to run in November, but then changed her mind. The result is a crowded race

filled with familiar names. Johanna Kuulei Shin Amorin is a small business owner and former Maui Planning Commissioner. Doreen Pua Gomes, who won the ILWU’s endorsement, is a former telephone company worker and Maui Police Commissioner (today she sits on the Maui Fire and Public Safety Commission). Former Maui County Councilman Dane Pomaika‘i Kane is, well, former Maui County Councilman Dain Kane. Keeaumoku Kapu is a longtime activist from Lahaina. Glenn G. Au is a Wailuku resident and political unknown. But it’s Rose Duey who has our vote. The executive director of the Olowalu Cultural Reserve, Duey is backed by the Sierra Club’s Maui chapter. She’s dedicated and above reproach.

WE SCORE THE BALLOT AMENDMENTS!

A

nd now we come to most dismal part of the election: ballot measures. Actually, it’s easy. All you do is get a copy of the ballot, read over the various measures until your eyes glaze over, then get a copy of the actual amendment language, which you then read over until you lose consciousness, and then when you wake up you glance over this article, taking note of where we put the YESs and NOs, and then you go vote. So what are you waiting for?

STATE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENTS

(Proposed by the Maui County Charter Commission)

5. Charter Revision Publication 1. Council Terms

NO This would lengthen County Council terms of office from two years to four, and limit councilmembers to three consecutive terms. Actually, we like the requirement that councilmembers come back for approval every two years. It helps with accountability. And since we really hate term limits (people should get the chance to vote for whoever they want), this one’s easy to say no to. 2. Ocean Rescue and Safety

1. Relating to Dams and Reservoirs

NO Most of the dams in Hawaii are privately owned. This amendment, influenced by the 2006 Ka Loko Dam disaster on Kauai that killed six people, would allow dam owners access to special taxpayerback bonds to fund any maintenance and repair their dams need. The state, which still has to inspect the dams, would now put the taxpayers on the hook for funding their maintenance, but the dams themselves would stay in private hands. That doesn’t sound prudent to us. 2. Relating to Retired Judges

YES This amendment, introduced by Maui’s own Senator Roz Baker, would keep the state’s retirement age for judges at 70, but allow retired judges to return for “interim duty” (not more than three months) at their old court, should the need arise. Given the overcrowded nature of courts these days, this seems more than justified.

MAUI COUNTY CHARTER AMENDMENTS

areas to testify, this is very reasonable.

YES This moves county lifeguards over to the Department of Fire and Public Safety. Well, duh. 3. County Auditor

HELL YES! If this passes, the county has to establish an independent Office of the County Auditor, which would have “full, free, and unrestricted access to any county officer or employee and shall be authorized to examine and inspect any record of any agency or operation of the county, to administer oaths and subpoena witnesses.” Imagine–an actual auditor, going over the books of any and all county departments, including the Police Department and the Department of Liquor Control. It’s about time. 4. Interactive Communication

YES This would allow residents of Hana, Lanai and Molokai a chance to testify at Maui County Council meetings through interactive video. Considering how much it would cost people who live in those

9. Annual Evaluation

YES

Amendments like this one make it easy to explain why more people don’t vote. This amendment would add a new section to the county charter “to require that the Maui County Charter be revised and published to include all new significant amendments adopted.” Seriously? We have to take time to vote on that? Okay, sure, whatev.

Right now, there are four county departments–Liquor Control, Police, Fire/ Public Safety and Personnel–in which their directors answer not to the Maui County Mayor, but to a special appointed commission. This amendment (even Charter Commissioner Dave DeLeon has called it “arcane”) would bring “consistency” (again, DeLeon’s word) to the process of hiring, reviewing and firing these directors. Seems right to us.

6. Council Residency Requirement

10. Preamble

YES

NO This amendment increases the residency requirement from 90 days to one year for someone who wants to run for the Maui County Council. Like term limits, residency requirements are undemocratic. Someone can be born and spend a lifetime on Maui and still have no idea how be an effective legislator, whereas someone who just moved here can learn the ropes and start representing the constituents like it was second nature. If voters don’t want someone who just moved here to represent them on the council, then they shouldn’t vote for them.

SURE, WHY NOT This amendment adds language to the County Charter’s preamble stating that the people of the county understand and respect their unique heritage in Hawaii and want to carry out the Hawaii state motto, “Ua Mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono” (The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness).

MAUI COUNTY CHARTER AMENDMENT (Proposed by the Maui County Council) 1. Unexpired Term

7. Mayor Residency Requirement

YES

NO

This one, which is rather technical, is actually quite simple. As things stand now, if a person fills a vacancy on the Maui County Council, then that portion of the term of office counts towards that member’s eventual term limit. This amendment would change that, allowing any portion of an unexpired term filled by a new member not to count towards the term limit. We like this, but only because we hate term limits. ■

This is the same as Number 6 above, but for those running for mayor. Again, no. 8. Environmental Management

YES This amendment would add “Guide efforts to optimize opportunities for environmental, natural resource protection, sustainability, conservation, and restoration” to the list of duties for the county’s Director of Environmental Management. Silly us–we foolishly assumed such an office already required such action, so yes.

Lobster Fest! Few do it better than Makena Beach and Golf Resort BY JEN RUSSO The exquisite main course four-ounce lobster tail is served with a fork-tender petite filet mignon and port wine reduction. The sides of sweet potato puree and garden-grown baby carrots were fantastic. The third course is a beautiful presentation of creme brûlée three ways: vanilla traditional, mango, and Kona coffee. The Kona coffee was our table’s favorite, and is topped in fresh berries, but the mango was amazing, too. The lobster fest is served on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Molokini Bar and Grill at Makena Beach Resort. You can

also have your fest paired with wine for an additional $20. They do a Friday night Seafood and Prime Rib Buffet, Saturday night Asian Buffet and the popular Sunday brunch. Lobster Salad

I

t’s hard to resist any dining experience that ends with “fest.” Makena Beach and Golf Resort’s Lobster Fest is one of the best surf and turf deals I’ve come across. For less than $40, you get a three-course meal focused on one of the ocean’s tastiest crustaceans: lobster. Executive Chef Marc McDowell is committed to his garden-to-table experience at the resort, but growing and tending to his garden on the Makena property isn’t easy. “I can pretty much only grow what the deer don’t like to

eat,” he told me during a recent garden tour. “See those fences there? They still keep coming back.” Luckily there are plenty of herbs the deer like to avoid, and Chef McDowell incorporates those wonderfully into the dishes and drinks on the Makena Beach Resort menu. Your three courses begin with a salad. Mine featured a lobster tail with blueberry and soy bean, covered in vanilla dressing. It was a surprising grouping of ingredients, but was also delicious. The tail was encircled with crunchy noodles, making it amazing to bite into.

Video Game Story Wreck-It Ralph is just pretty good BY BARRY WURST II

Wreck-It Ralph ★★★★★

Rated PG / 108 Min.

A

nyone who grew up on Maui during the 1980s remembers The Fun Factory, the glorious arcade that used to be nestled on the bottom floor of the Wharf Cinema Center. It housed dozens of video games, rows of skee ball and was an obsession of many of my classmates. One of my favorite games was “Rampage,” in which, for a mere quarter, the player could become a giant wolf man, lizard or gorilla and destroy buildings and eat people for points. The spirit of that game is very much in Wreck-It Ralph, the title figure of the new Disney CGI comedy. Ralph (voiced perfectly by John C. Reilly) is a video game character whose villainous reputation is at odds with what a lonely, unhappy guy he is. Every day, he and his cast of characters put on a good show for the kids in the arcade but, when the lights go down and the arcade closes, Ralph is left out of the nightly after parties.

Seeking acceptance, Ralph ditches his world and seeks acknowledgement elsewhere, as he travels inside the pixilated worlds of the different games throughout the arcade. This passable Disney film starts off promisingly, appeared to be headed for classic status but, like Meet the Robinsons, winds up being just pretty good. Ralph’s unlikely friendship with a cute outsider from a children’s game, voiced by Sarah Silverman, offers a solid message (outsiders need to stick together!). There’s also plenty of entertainment value and dazzling animation that cleverly gives each character different looks and movement, depending on how advanced their game programming is. It’s in 3D but the imagery already pops off the screen, as the action and characters have the bouncing, exuberant quality of pop-up book illustrations. Longtime gamers will enjoy cameo appearances by Sonic the Hedgehog and, in the film’s best running joke, an out of work Q*Bert. The filmmakers of Toy Story were once famously turned down by the makers of Barbie for her to appear in the first movie. Disney had no such troubled this time, as there are countless references to old and new video games,

as well as some shameless product placements. From the start, the whole thing is more ??? amusing than funny and relies on nostalgia for video games to carry much of the first hour. The story has blatant steals from Toy Story (the video game characters break character whenever humans aren’t looking) and Monsters Inc. (from the game doorways to the touching final closing shot) but, despite being produced by Pixar head John Lasseter, never achieves Pixar brilliance. It’s also an iffy bet for small children, as some scenes are scary or mean. The humor is often edgy but also questionable at times, as some of the presumably ad-libbed dialog by Silverman and Jane Lynch are cringe inducing. I kid you not: at one point, Silverman’s character snuggles on her bed and coos “I’m all wrapped up in a blanket like a homeless woman.” Excuse me? While this and other disagreeable mo-

ments will likely go over the heads of some kids, their parents will notice how the film tries to please every age group but is too uneven and plot-heavy. It’s always fun to look at and, thanks to an enjoyable soundtrack, a pleasure to listen to, but it really needed more heart and genuine laughs to work. The closing scenes tie things up nicely but the recent, underrated TRON: Legacy actually had real substance, ambition and depth, in addition to dazzling graphics and a fetish for old school video gaming. I still play old school arcade games and have a fondness for much of what the movie is about but it aims to do for video games what Toy Story does for toys and doesn’t get within Pac-Man’s reach of a power pellet. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1620f

Horoscope

Sign Language BY CAERIEL CRESTIN SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) You’re not a cold person, even though some see you that way. I’d argue that you burn hotter than most. Antares, the red supergiant star that forms the heart of the Scorpio constellation, is about 700 times the diameter of our sun. If our sun were that big, it’d engulf most of our inner solar system, including Earth. Antares is one of the brightest stars in the sky despite the fact that it’s hundreds of times further than many of them—500 light years away. It’s only distance and difference that makes you seem aloof. Those who’ve seen inside that fiery heart of yours know better. In order to improve not only your rep but that of frosty Scorps everywhere, let a couple more people touch the nuclear fires of your love this week. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Between the mess in your head and the knots in the brain of your chief love interest, you may feel like there’s no dancing room. Your ankles keep getting tangled in the thorny briars of your pasts, tripping you up when you’d like to move forward. This isn’t a hopeless situation, though. Due to one of the karmic tax cuts the universe is offering now, you’re in luck; only one of you is getting trapped at any given time. The key to getting through this mess is taking turns leading the waltz—which means letting go of any ideas about who’s in charge. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) The universe rarely outwits you. But since you lost your cheat-sheet this week, you’re down here with the rest of us mere mortals. Try to look at it as a good thing; your tendency to know all the answers ahead of time was not only obnoxious, it kept you from developing yourself or being challenged, at times. Getting an honest score on life’s tests will not only earn you valuable self-knowledge, it will bring you closer to the real answers, the ones that will mean something to you, unlike those you lifted straight out of a book. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) When was the last time you climbed a tree? Or dug in the garden? It may be getting too chilly for constructively rooting around in flowerbeds, but your soul doesn’t care about that. I’ve detected an unfortunate headiness pervading your life lately. Besides sex, time spent actually consciously inhabiting your body has been depressingly small. Don’t you remember the realization you had last year—the one where your internal balance depended on regular, meditative time communing with nature, one way or another? Honor that lesson, and you’ll find that the vast majority of things that have been plaguing you will simply slip away. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Somewhere along the way you got access to the casino control room, the one the rest of us are convinced exists. You snuck into that backroom with walls of surveillance monitors, where some Las Vegas demigod decides whose slot machines hit the jackpot and whose don’t, and rigged the whole setup. It’s the only explanation for your continued good fortune, which defies reasonable odds. Although people are happy for you, they can’t help feeling a bit of resentment. In order to quash riotous discontent before a full-scale revolution erupts, share the wealth this week. Pour your clinking windfall into the cups of your neighbors, and they’ll let you keep the secret of your continued providence. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) It’s not like you’re planning a trip over the Niagara Falls in a barrel, or leaping the Grand Canyon on a motorcycle. The risks you’re planning may fly in the face of something at least slightly awesome and powerful, but they’re not truly dangerous; they’re more like confronting the phony wizard of Emerald City, Oz. All you have to do is hold your ground and be alert. Don’t let the nervous, naysaying Munchkins dismay you. They’re easily impressed and deluded. Trust your vision to pierce the facades of blustering illusion to see the small, ridiculous people behind them, and trust your ability to kick their asses.

TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Even though you’re surprisingly open-minded at times, you’re not exactly notorious for your flexibility. No one expects you to put your feet behind your head or bend over backwards. In fact, just the opposite: People count on you to stand your ground in certain territories, as unyielding and unchanging as a stone. Consistency is a good thing, but come on. At the very least, consider the facts. If your position is well-founded, it won’t be shaken by questioning or criticism. Blind faith is for the weak. Changing your mind because of a well-reasoned argument? That’s strength. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Luckily your heart has the regenerative capabilities of a starfish. Not literally, of course, but emotionally you are able to restore it to wholeness, if you give yourself enough time and loving care. Any piece of a starfish with part of the central body intact can grow into a whole animal. Your heart is similar. It sucks that it’s been thrashed to pieces at times. But losing your ability to love would be a gruesome victory for the thrashers. Don’t let that happen. Pluck out the biggest chunk, put it somewhere with lots of sunlight and adoration, and show off how little the hurt can hold you back. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) After executing a series of sickening belly flops and frustrated cannon balls, your hesitant approach to the diving board invites cringes all around. It’s painful to witness your self-torture. I hope you’ll notice none of your die-hard fans have left the bleachers, however; we’re still cheering you on, albeit anxiously. Don’t turn away from the ladder that’ll take you up to that daunting 30-foot drop. Practice is practice, even if you’ve only been practicing what not to do. Try again. If not for yourself, you owe it to us, and our faith in you. This time, you’ll not only pull off the unquestionably difficult maneuver you’ve been attempting, you’ll do it so precisely that people won’t believe what they’ve seen. They may, in fact, demand that you do it again. Go ahead. I predict a perfect 10, both times.

LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) No one hates suffering punishment more than you do, especially when you haven’t done anything wrong. Being penalized for your precociousness is so unfair—it takes you back to the days when you were forced to wait some arbitrary amount of time for responsibilities you knew you could handle, like a driver’s license. Some of this unfair discipline stems from a desire to do you good: Sure, you can handle the responsibilities of someone much older and wiser, but you don’t need to. Enjoy the moment for what it is, and leave that shit for later. By the time you have to shoulder those burdens, you’ll be glad you didn’t way back when you could have. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) What if there were witches? What if, back during the witch-hunts in Salem, Massachusetts and elsewhere, there were mutants, people who’d evolved past normal humankind to have paranormal abilities? In that case, the Puritans of the era squashed humanity’s potential by rooting them out and burning them. Keeping us ordinary. Okay, it’s a ridiculously farfetched scenario, but something like it (on a much smaller scale) is playing itself out in your life. Before you take the seemingly dangerous elements of your current situation and tie them to the pyre, ask yourself: Could these things I fear actually be the next stages of my personal evolution? LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Kiss a Pisces this week. You’re the sign most able to understand their dualism and persistent internal conflict, and therefore commiserate. Surely you can remember many moments when you froze while your mental arguments played themselves out. Paralyzed by indecision, you may have wished that someone, anyone, would bail you out and tell you which part of you was “right.” Here’s your chance. Your Pisces buddies need you to clear up the myriad tiny debates that make them just so ineffective at times. Tell them what to do. It’ll be fun for both of you.
