LIKES OUR TAKE ON KAWIKA CROWLEY
WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED
You wrote, “we want to see more candidates like [2nd District Republican Congressional candidate David Kawika] Crowley, who live like normal people and aren’t afraid to speak out about what they truly believe” (“Candidate,” Oct. 25, 2012). I agree. If you don’t mind me repeating something, I just submitted the following to another news site that covered Crowley: it echoes your sentiments strongly. I think it’s been very poor form for her [Democrat Tulsi Gabbard] to deny his efforts to meet her in debate. How anyone can run for a national level public office today and refuse a public debate and still have a hope of winning an election is beyond me. We’ve all seen how important it is to put candidates for office in a situation similar to what they face in office: having to stand up to opposition and defend their ideas and stands publicly. There’s no way that simple set piece interviews and public statements can be any substitute. Crowley believes in what he stands for, and I actually don’t agree with quite everything he stands for. But at least he’s

How many afternoon and evening trips does a new traffic study show for the proposed mega mall that would go up in the same spot? A. 700. B. 1,000. C. 1,900. D. 2,900. E. 3,300.

The creative and artistic cover quite literally compelled us to immediately devour this issue. Many have said, “you can’t judge a book by its cover” however, this cover really attracts attention. Our congratulations to you for discovering, nurturing and displaying such a creative and compelling message. -Tom Feltz, via email

Talk of the Island
BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO
Got my debt calculator!
FITCHRATINGS SAYS COUNTY FINANCES GOOD, HAWAII PENSION DEBT WORSE THAN EVER And now I’d like to take a few moments to talk about something near and dear to all of our hearts: Other Post-Employment Benefits (OPEB) liabilities. I know, topics as sexy and provocative as this are rarely suitable for even alternative papers, but hey–we’re all adults here, right? Basically, we’re talking about government employee pensions and benefits, which make up a surprisingly large and increasingly unstable part of most municipalities’ debt burdens. The reason I’m bringing this up is because of a recent FitchRatings report on a new $71.2 billion General Obligation Bond for the County of Maui (I know, reporters shouldn’t be allowed to have this much fun). And that report, which is generally very positive about the county’s financial situation (it got a vaunted AA+ rating, after all), does contain the following disturbing sentences: “The weakness in the county’s otherwise sound debt profile is its pension and OPEB liabilities,” states the Oct. 25 report. “The county participates in the state pension plan, which is poorly funded at just 59%, with a 7.75% investment assumption. However, the funded level deteriorates to 55% with the 7.00% return assumption Fitch uses to enhance comparability between pension systems.” That’s actually bad news. A safe level of funding for pension liabilities, most economic experts agree, is about 80 percent– meaning the state actually has assets equal to 80 percent of the pension debt. Nothing like that is apparently happening in Hawaii, though, since 80 is way higher than
the 59 percent (or 55 percent) currently seen here. This is also worse than the 61 percent funding figure cited in the Associated Press’ June 19, 2012 article on state pension liabilities, which also reported that Hawaii racked up $18.5 billion in obligations and is among the 10 worst states in the nation in terms of such debt. “Over the past couple of years the board of trustees has been initiating legislative proposals to deal with the significant and escalating pension liabilities,” says Wes Machida, administrator of the State of Hawaii Employees’ Retirement System, in the AP story. They’ve done, FitchRatings says, by “increasing contribution rates incrementally through fiscal 2016, starting a second tier for new employees, and eliminating pension-spiking opportunities.” Of course, that seven percent rate of return used by Fitch seems optimistic. In an Oct 23, 2012 Bloomberg article on pension problems that postulates a $2 trillion gap between municipal pension obligations and funding, Peter Orszag (who ran the Office of Management and Budget for President Barack Obama) assumes a more realistic six percent return on invest-
ment in his calculations. The reason for such debt problems? Orszag says it probably lies in a mix of public employee union intransigence (which has long negotiated extremely lucrative benefit packages) and a lack of simple fiscal discipline. In any case, the FitchRatings report says the County of Maui has actually been dealing with the debt in a financially responsible way: “The county’s unfunded OPEB liability is substantial at $344 million (1.1% of AV [assessed valuation]),” states the report. “However, the county has been proactively addressing its liability by contributing 100% of ARC [actuarially required cost] to an OPEB fund since fiscal 2007.” But even that fiscal responsibility has a cost. To put all this very arcane accounting into human terms, the more cities, counties, states and school districts have to spend on pension and benefit obligations to retired employees, the less they have to spend on things like road and wastewater improvements, public schools, libraries, health care, social services for poor people and so on. And those things are all important to a functioning democracy, right? Right??
they buy a bag of Ruffles, we’ve always been fascinated by Will’s trotting out the comparison every election cycle. This year, while we couldn’t quite locate the latest domestic sales figures for just potato chips, we were able to find some other fascinating U.S. stats. Here’s how that $6 billion in political advertising for 2012 figure stacks up against other products Americans are buying: • $98.94 billion on beer (2011) • $34 billion on chips and pretzels (2012) • $27.2 billion on books (2011) • $19.5 billion on chocolate (2011) • $16.3 billion on video games (2011) • $10.2 billion on movie tickets (2011– U.S./Canada) • $4.52 billion on coffee (2011) • $1.7 billion on medical marijuana (2011)
WE SPENT WHAT ON WHAT?! Monday morning we heard on NPR that a new Center for Responsive Politics report pegs the spending on political advertising this election year at $6 billion. Even when you add up all the television and radio spots, newspaper ads, billboards, web ads, buttons, t-shirts and bumper stickers, that’s a lot of dough. This is, according to CRP, the most ever spent on an American election. Now longtime Washington columnist/baseball fan/bow-tie wearer/ coot George Will has often scoffed at such statistics, saying they pale before what the nation spends every year on “potato chips.” Ignoring the obvious fallacy that American consumers don’t purchase political campaign ads in the same way
Overheard “Slutty girl costumes shouldn’t come in plus sizes.” -Woman on Front Street in Lahaina, Oct. 31
So there you go. In terms of sales, political spending is way more important than coffee and medicinal pot to Americans, but no where near as important as books, chocolate, salty snack foods and, of course, beer. Beer!
IAO VALLEY STATE PARK TOLLBOOTH DESTROYED! Forgive us if we don’t exactly cry over the fiery destruction of the toll booth at the Iao Valley State Park lot, causing $4,000 in damage, according to the Nov. 4 Maui News . We know the state Department of Land and Natural Resources needs money bad, but charging for what was once free will always leave a bitter taste in our mouths. Vandalism is a suspected cause, according to the News, though we wonder as to possible suspects. Since toll booth operators (at least as far as we know) weren’t charging locals, is it possible we’re dealing with a pissed off tourist (or tourists)? We’d look into this more, but we just realized that we have an awful lot of beer to drink. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1621n1

Election Roundup BY ANTHONY PIGNATARO
OUR TAKE ON THE 2012 ELECTION Guess we don’t have Linda Lingle to kick around anymore. On Election night, the former two-term Republican Governor of Hawaii who had trounced Democrat Mazie Hirono at the polls a decade ago, was herself shown the door in her bid to succeed retiring U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka (D–Hawaii). The final summary vote tally, released by the state Office of Elections at nearly 3am Wednesday morning, showed Congresswoman Hirono beating Lingle by more than 100,000 votes–61.6 percent to 36.8 percent (Democrat Tulsi Gabbard, running to succeed Hirono in the 2nd District, beat her Republican challenger Kawika Crowley by a greater margin). The mood at both parties’ respective Maui headquarters foreshadowed that margin of victory long before the elections office released the first printout of votes (because officials had not anticipated the state’s 61.9 percent turnout rate, many precincts across the state ran out of ballots and had to remain open past their 6pm closing time and the first results weren’t made public until close to 9pm). The Republican Party’s Wailuku office, though filled with a few dozen people in white eating sushi, was a quiet place at
Of course, this probably seems obvious to us in Hawaii, one of the most ethnically diverse states in the nation. The more conservative states? Not so much. As far as Hawaii goes, the Democrats somehow strengthened their already absolute control over both legislative houses. Here on Maui, Republican state Representative George Fontaine, who represents South Maui, lost handily to Democratic challenger Kaniela Ing–the only upset in any Maui County election. Indeed, as far as this county goes, the electorate was more than happy with its Democratic incumbents. State Senator Roz Baker and state Representatives Angus McKelvey, Kyle Yamashita and Mele Carroll all beat their Republican challengers by massive majorities. For the non-partisan Maui County Council races, the status quo was the big winner. Incumbents Mike Victorino, Don Couch, Gladys Baisa, Bob Carroll, Elle Cochran, Mike White and Riki Hokama all easily returned to office (the last four in that list didn’t even have challengers). Newcomers Don Guzman and Stacy Helm Crivello will take over the open Kahului and Molokai seats, respectively. Over in the non-partisan Office of Hawaiian Affairs races, colorful candidates like Walter
FOR MONTHS POLLSTERS TOLD US THE RACE WAS A DEAD HEAT, BUT WHEN THE VOTES STARTED ADDING UP, OBAMA WON A CLEAR VICTORY. 8:30pm. Not so the Democrats’ office down the street. There, party regional coordinator Dylan Beesley was absolutely giddy. “We knocked on 2,000 doors today,” Beesley told me. “And we made 5,000 calls. Over the last two months we made over 20,000 contacts. It’s been inspirational. People knew the clear choice they were facing. We reminded them of that again and again. Some people got six calls!” As Hawaii goes, so goes the nation. Republican Mitt Romney had just delivered his concession speech when I spoke to Beesley, ending the wealthy former Massachusetts governor’s bid to unseat President Barack Obama. For months pollsters told us the race was a dead heat, but when the votes started adding up, Obama won a clear victory. A weak incumbent hobbled by a still-weak economy and high unemployment, Obama and the Democrats apparently found an easy way to win: let the Republicans demonize immigrants (which Latinos took to heart), women, poor people, homosexuals and scientists, and then reap the rewards. As a result, Republicans held onto the U.S. House of Representatives, but not much else. It will be fascinating to watch the Republican Party in the next few months, to see if they finally accept that America is more multicultural than ever and that white men no longer rule the nation as they once did.

Ritte and Rose Duey lost to Haunani Apoliona and Carmen Hulu Lindsey (who even managed to beat former Maui County Councilman Dane Kane), respectively. Both state constitutional amendments on the ballot passed easily, which means private dam owners will now have access to tax-free loans to repair their dams and retired judges can now return to the courts for limited times when the dockets get too packed. In terms of the Maui County charter amendments, voters were clear: lengthening council terms from two years to four years was bad, but everything else was good. That means Hana, Lanai and Molokai residents will now be able to testify at hearings remotely, council and mayoral candidates will have to live in the county for at least a year before running and departments will now have to face a new County Auditor. We can only hope that new office gets the staff and funding it needs to be a real force in the county. So is this really the political end of Linda Lingle? I doubt it–U.S. Senator Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) is the same age as Akaka, and will have to retire someday. When that happens, I think Lingle will be more than willing to run again. ■ anthony@mauitime.com + @apignataro To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1621n2

The island of Rapa Nui left many juicy mysteries for scientists in the 20th century to unravel. This week, the PBS program NOVA tackles the puzzle of how the islanders built giant stone statues called Moai that remain on the island long after their builders vanished. Much of the show is filmed in Hawaii, where Dr. Terry Hunt, a professor of anthropology at UH Manoa, collaborated with a California university professor to research various theories. They created a five-ton replica of the statues at Kualoa Ranch and their experiments on the statue will be featured on the show. The NOVA show “Mystery of Easter Island” debuted on PBS Hawaii Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 9pm, with encores scheduled for Friday, Nov. 9 at 11pm and Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2pm.

Once again, in September, the upscale Standard Hotel, in New York City’s lower Manhattan, made headlines for the views it provides to amazed pedestrians. In 2009, it was the hotel’s floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing amorous couples at play (unless the guests knew to draw the curtains), especially delighting out-of-towners seeking inexpensive entertainment. Now, a September 2012 report in the New York Daily News revealed that the restrooms at the hotel’s Boom-Boom Room restaurant posed a bigger problem: no curtains at all. One restroom user, from Australia, said, “Sitting on the royal throne, you don’t expect a public viewing.” On the other hand, the Daily News noted one gentleman relieving himself and waving merrily at the gawking crowd below.
Valerie Spruill, 60, of Doylestown, Ohio, disclosed publicly in September that she had unknowingly married her own father following the dissolution of her first marriage, which had produced three children. Percy Spruill, a “nice man,” she said, died in 1998, and Valerie told the Akron Beacon Journal that she had heard family rumors after that but only confirmed the parentage in 2004 (with DNA from an old hairbrush). After eight years of silence, from embarrassment, she went public, she said, as an example to help other women who come from tumultuous childhoods in which many men are in their mothers’ lives.

“If the Messiah descends from the Mount of Olives as foretold in the Bible,” wrote the Los Angeles Times in an October dispatch from Jerusalem, the two largest Christian television networks in the U.S. promise to cover the arrival live from a hilltop in the city. Daystar Television has already been beaming a 24/7 webcam view, and Trinity Broadcasting Network bought the building next door to Daystar’s in September and has already begun staging live and pre-recorded programs using the broad expanse of the Holy Land city as background.
Like Us:
Earlier this year, the National Football League suspended some New Orleans Saints players and the head coach for having a reward system that paid players for purposely injuring opponents. In September, coach Darren Crawford of the Tustin (Calif.) Pee Wee Red Cobras team was suspended when former players reported that the coach ran an apparently similar scheme among his
10- and 11-year-olds, using a cash reward of up to $50 for the “hit of the game” (with last year’s top prize going to the boy who left an opposing running back with a mild concussion). At press time, the investigation was ongoing, and no charges had been filed.
BECAUSE WE CAN, THAT’S WHY In September, the National Geographic show Taboo featured three young Tokyo partiers as examples of the “bagel head” craze in which fun-lovers inject saline just under the skin of the forehead to create a swelling and then pressure the center to achieve a donut look that lasts up to 24 hours before the saline is absorbed into the body. Some adventurers have injected other areas of the body–even the scrotum.
SCAMTASTIC! In Ventura, Calif., in September, once again, a scammer tried to bilk victims out of money by assuring them that he could double their cash (in this case, $14,000) merely by spraying it with a secret chemical. Of course, the victims had to wait several hours for their newly doubled cash to dry and eventually discovered that the scammer had substituted blank paper and by that time was long gone. But the weirdest aspect of the scam is that people who are so unsophisticated as to fall for it somehow managed to amass, in this tight economy, $14,000 cash to begin with.
TRUE BEAUTY For a September beauty contest of female college students in China’s Hubei province, certain minimum body requirements were established at the outset (beyond the traditional chest, waist and hip sizes). Among them, according to a report in China’s Global Post: The space between the candidate’s pupils should be 46 percent of the distance between each pupil and the nearer ear, and the distance between a candidate’s nipples should be at least 20cm (7.8 inches).
WEIRDO-AMERICAN COMMUNITY Eric Carrier, 24, was charged once again in September, in Hampton, N.H., with attempting to commit indecent exposure by his scheme of faking a brain injury so that he could hire an in-home nurse to change his diaper regularly. He was similarly charged in July 2011 in Hooksett, N.H., after soliciting five women on Craigslist, and convicted in July 2012. (Though not explicit in news reports, the nature of the charges suggests that Carrier can very well control his bowel movements.) ■ chuck@mauitime.com To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1621n4

The Ultimate Tree House Exploring Patrick Dougherty’s “On The Wild Side” sculpture at the Hui Noeau Words By: Jen Russo • Photos by Darris Hurst

ids love sticks. But that’s not quite what the Hui Noeau in Makawao had in mind when they invited renowned artist Patrick Dougherty to Maui to spin his magic stick sculptures on their 10 acres of open space, as part of their Artist in Residence program. No, they actually had a more philanthropic/benevolent goal: “to provide opportunities for local

Maui artists to learn through dynamic and engaging interactions that have a long term impact in the community.” As I marched up the Hui driveway with 20 or so four- and five-year-olds, all twitterpated with anticipation as to what this day out of their normally scheduled class was going to hold, I watched their faces light up as we found our destination. Think of it as something made entirely of sticks, straight from Middle Earth.
“The saplings that I gather range from finger to wrist size, and I gather them for both their color and flexibility,” he said. “Willow is a favorite sapling, but I often use Maple, Sweet Gum, Elm or Dogwood, depending on what is plentiful where I’m working. In some locations, I need to use more exotic saplings like Sassafras, Crabapple or fruitwoods because that’s what is available. In Japan, I experimented with reeds and bamboo.”
Hawaii posed a few challenges for Dougherty, but he found a solution that also turned out to be beneficial for our environment. Strawberry Guava has proved a usable material in Hawaii because it’s both flexible and plentiful,” he said. “Moreover, since it’s an invasive species, our harvesting helped the eradication program already in place.” Dougherty took his lifelong preoccupation with building things with his own hands and his degree in art and built
and international reputation as the artful architect of sticks. So far, he’s constructed more than 200 organic nest-like sculptures across the globe that, over time, fade back into the landscape. The process is immense. Dougherty must first dig down two feet to create stability, since the sculptures are intended for human roaming. Even with teams of volunteers assisting, it usually takes him about three weeks to shape the wood into a completed piece.
ing that there was going to be way too much material. Little did I know!” The resulting sculpture, aptly named “On the Wild Side,” is a massive series of wooden cotton candy puffs. It’s the ultimate Hobbit shack. Little doors and windows peek out here and there, letting in the light. You immediately see the structure to your right as you walk towards the main building on their property. The Hui welcomes picnickers, lookie loos and running children. The sculpture beckons you to enter. In
seems to be a world of gentle curves. I started by laying out a footprint of five large curved shapes. These shapes were placed in such a way that the viewer could meander from one to another once the upper part of the shape was figured out. In other words, I set some parameters for the work and then as the work took shape, I ad-libbed and developed the upper part as I went. The big challenge was to make something that fit the green space it occupies and somehow to nestle it under the big Norfolk pine that is nearby. I wanted something that felt right in
Kelly McHugh, the director of the Artist in Residence program at the Hui, says the program is designed purposely to get people together, building on their core group of artists and students while hosting. The projects involved also blossom new interest in volunteering and getting hands-on with the artist and the piece. “We want to build more arts advocates,” she said. “We want to build more bridges and make art relevant to new audiences while strengthening that relevance to existing audiences. Not just seeing it, but experiencing it–and that doesn’t have to mean making it: it can just mean forming a deeper connection than an initial reaction or first impression. As Maui’s only communitybased visual arts education organization, we feel it’s imperative to advance this work within and throughout our community.” Dougherty came to Maui for an initial walk through the grounds, which is when he determined where his sculpture would stand. Then he started on the sticks. In Hawaii, where much of our woodlands have been introduced, and this flora tends to choke out the endemic species, Dougherty had the opportunity to assist the natural environment by choosing to use an invasive species. “We were absolutely thrilled to be asked to participate in this project,” said Lissa Fox Strohecker, the education and outreach specialist of the Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC). “It’s different from our normal work and provided us with an excellent opportunity to help get the word out about the impacts of invasive species, but gathering the volume of material was a rather daunting task. It was possible, thanks to the many volunteers.” After discussions on a suitable material be-
‘On The Wild Side’ is a sculpture that features the ‘gentle curve’–bananas, fish, seed pods, leaves, the shape of the monkey pod tree nearby,” gan in December 2010, Strohecker says MISC and Dougherty settled on Strawberry Guava. “It’s definitely in abundance, and as one of the most damaging invasive species in Hawaii, it was a great way to help raise awareness about the impact,” she said. “The amount of material collected was impressive! I remember seeing the piles of ‘sticks’ when we were done collecting the first day and think-
fact, I was tempted to string up a hammock and nap in there, the ultimate tree house. Each of Dougherty’s sculpture is unique, and the shapes that the pieces take on are inspired by their location. “I have built many different objects from saplings, but ‘On The Wild Side’ is a sculpture that features the ‘gentle curve’–bananas, fish, seed pods, leaves, the shape of the monkey pod tree nearby,” Dougherty said. “Maui
the space and had an appropriate scale.” To perpetuate the partnership between this project and the public, the Hui began offering a field trip for students to come experience the sculpture. Art begins with appreciation, and the gracious staff was eager to see their young visitors on the morning we arrived to “Explore and Discover.”
The kids, still boggled by the new surroundings of their day, quietly surrounded McHugh and Hui staffer Julie Matheis. We stood under the norfolk and next to “On the Wild Side” with a gentle drizzle hugging us together. The students perked up when they heard that we were moving into the litho studio for the StickFolk Workshop. Inside, Matheis took us through the gamut of found objects that we could use to create art: everything from natural things like twigs and seeds to googly eyes and sparkly neon pipe cleaners. Students were eager to get working on their pet projects. The idea was that later, they would introduce their new object to the outdoors and Dougherty’s “On the Wild Side.” Part way through the workshop, all the drilling through seeds and nuts and glueing sticks together and tapping glitter came to a halt to give Strohecker the floor. She was there to talk about endemic versus invasive species, and what we can all do to be stewards of this close knit ecological tightrope in the middle of the Pacific. I asked Mr. Jeffrey Friedman, one of the teachers in the Montessori class that has accompanied me on this excursion, how much of this information four- or five-year-old could retain. “My experience with this issue at such a young age is that children can indeed grasp the difference between native and invasive when presented succinctly with age-appropriate language and context,” he said. “I knew our children were on the younger side of what the Hui/ MISC’s program was designed to target. Nevertheless, our MISC presentation was largely well done. They gained an awareness, an impression, of one aspect that defines their environment.” Hunger motivated us to the next step, where we dined on sack lunches in the Hui’s gorgeous solarium as it rained outside. Then, after lunch, it dried just enough to enjoy an outdoor stroll through the stick maze Dougherty created. But strolling soon turned to glorious kid chaos with an after-lunch spike in energy. With newly made creatures in hand, the kids twirled, ran, hid in corners and launched themselves about the stick sculpture trying to explore every aspect. “The sculpture is on the wild side of the island and also fits the sense of vibrancy that characterizes the natural world on Maui–the freedom that is embodied by both wind and wave,” said Dougherty. “I liked the final sculpture very much and it seemed very successful and popular with the viewers. It’s easy to lose your children in just a few feet; there are lots of nooks and crannies and doorways to slip through. The sculpture is accessible and can be easily stepped into by even the most casual visitor to the Hui.” But after that first visit with the kids, it became clear to me that Dougherty had created something more than just a mass jumble of sticks. The construction phase included many local people volunteering their time,” he said. “It seems that in the process of building a sculpture it is also possible to build community.” ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1621L

An Anglophile’s Dream Checking out Fleetwood’s on Front Street BY JEN RUSSO • PHOTOS SEAN M. HOWER
Fleetwood's on Front Street 744 Front St., Lahaina 808-669-MICK (6425) fleetwoodsonfrontst.com
Things only got better. I was very impressed to hear Chef Maro Gjurasic was joining Corporate Chef Scott Leibfried at the Fleetwood team as executive chef. I had followed Gjurasic’s career at the Plantation House restaurant, where Executive Chef Alex Stanislaw always had great things to say about
what he was doing in the kitchen. Gjurasic is just one of those chefs oozing creativity–the kind you can eat. Leibfried is no slouch either, having worked on Food Network Challenge and Gordon Ramsey’s Hell’s Kitchen . I will admit I pre-judged the place a bit. After the place opened a few months
ago, I put my feelers out asking people about their experiences. The fantastic thing is it was all-around wonderful. We had heard that the sunset on the rooftop was epic and some little ceremony happened that we had to check out. As the sun sets, they hold a brief continued on page 15
I
’m a total anglophile. I love all things British; from music to the monarchy, from gin to James Bond, my obsession and admiration is wide. So when I got word that music legend Mick Fleetwood was planning a three-level retail, club/entertainment venue/restaurant, I got giddy. That transformed into excitement when, in 2011, I met Mick (and his partner Jonathan Todd) at the Kona Mai Tai Festival. He was there as a judge, but we talked about his plans for a new Front Street restaurant. To calm my nerves, I knocked back a tequila shot before getting ushered into a secret chamber where his people and the man himself gave me a turn at the media waltz. Fleetwood is very tall, with gobs of cool to fill his stature, just like you’d expect from a rock star. His palate is impeccable–he loves to eat and has been bottling his own award-winning wine under the label Mick Fleetwood Private Cellar–so why not open a grand restaurant in Lahaina Town, with a rooftop live music venue?

Food & Drink continued from page 13 ceremony that combines the traditions of Maui, torch lighting, conch-blowing and a touching blessing full of mana, all followed with a bagpipe performance. It’s serious chicken skin stuff, especially when you have one of their 16 incredible signature cocktails in your hand. All are handcrafted using great spirits and fresh ingredients. I started with the Mick’s Margarita: Cazedoras Blanco, St. Germain, fresh lime juice, all topped with Mick’s Pinot Noir. It’s one of the cleverest cocktail menus I’ve seen, and every cocktail on the list is $14, which keeps it simple. After the ceremony, the live music gets going. You can also get a limited menu of pupus and sandwiches on the roof. The theme upstairs is modern Morrocan, with lots of couches to share while you enjoy music, the view (makai or mauka) or imbibing. The night I visited, Mick was scheduled to play, so it was packed. The main dining room is the mid-level part of the building, and is adorned in dark
wood furniture, red velvet drapes and swathed in a bit of British decor. Half the room is truncated by a wall separating the lounge and bar dining, with cozy low couches, high tops and seats at the grand bar. Running into lots of friends in the dining room, some had already ordered the brilliant Beef Wellington that is on special every night. It’s a classic English dish–a beef tenderloin smothered with pate, wrapped in puff pastry and baked. It’s an exquisite dish, hard to find on Maui, and is served around rare to medium rare. It comes with fries and charred broccoli, which is Mick’s favorite method of preparation. It was staggeringly good. Other items are similarly delicious. Leibfried’s artisan thin crust flat breads all have some kind of twist, but the bangers and fingerling combo (potatoes on a pizza?) was so unusual I had to try it. It works, with the tasty roasted fingerlings and chicken sausage going so well on top, and the fontina, Maui onion and parmigiano reggiano just add more richness underneath.

Oh, and you must remember to save room for dessert. Their grilled pineapple spears with ice cream was fantastic. They also offer chocolate cake, an incredible cheese platter and even cookies and milk. After we ate, it was time to get starstruck. We sashayed back to the roof to find Mick jamming on the drums while Rick Vito and Mark Johnstone played alongside. The venue has live music regularly–just check our calendar listings for what’s going on. Fleetwood’s on Front Street has more than enough square footage dedicated to fun. The memorabilia and rock star atmosphere inside is convincing, and the food and cocktail menus are solid. Anglophiles won’t be disappointed. ■ jen@mauitime.com + @jenrusso For more foodie news, visit MauiTime’s food blog at: mauidish.com

Also on the flat bread menu: kalua pork with dried pineapple, red onion, cilantro and pepper jack cheese. The Margarita is buffalo mozzarella and oven dried tomato with basil. They all warrant tasting. The list of appetizers is so huge you could just eat pupu style. There’s hummus, clam chowder, calamari, wild mushroom ravioli, steamed mussels and much more. I went for the local ono ceviche, which comes with house-made corn tortilla chips. The ceviche has a generous amount of avocado on top, and the fish is fresh and bright with flavor from lime and cilantro. But it was the delicious chips that made all the difference. We also ordered “96761 Maui’s Best,” an incredible salad that I will order again. There, hearts of palm gave it sustenance along with the Maui Surfing Goat BBQ Chèvre, but the delicate shaved red onion, carrot and pea sprints on the greens created great texture and flavor while a white balsamic vinaigrette brought it all together.

James Bond Rises Sam Mendes’ Skyfall is not your typical 007 picture BY BARRY WURST II
Skyfall ★★★★★
Rated PG-13 / 143 Min.
I
clearly remember the day that I discovered James Bond. My dad was watching Octopussy on HBO and I came into the living room and asked him, “what’s that?” After watching for an hour, I was particularly impressed how British Secret Service (BSS) Agent Bond used a robot alligator for one of his escapes. Later that night, my Dad popped in the videocassette of Goldfinger and I was hooked for life. The first Bond film I ever saw in the theater was The Living Daylights, which starred the unloved Timothy Dalton. I still find it odd that few film fans appreciated Dalton, whose take on Bond was not only extremely faithful to what series creator Ian Fleming wrote, but demonstrated a no-nonsense coldness, even a nastiness, that is the trademark of the current actor playing the part, Daniel Craig. In his third outing as agent 007, Craig
returns in this belated adventure; at one point, Craig as Bond declares that one of his occupations is resurrecting himself, a comment he’s making to the audience as much as the bad guy. Since fans have been waiting a good four years for this, here’s the barest of plot descriptions: Bond and BSS head M (played with effortless forcefulness by Judi Dench) are on unsteady ground with their country, due to the vengeful online hackings and terrorist bombings by a villain named Silva, played by Javier Bardem (who doesn’t enter the film until its nearly over). Bond’s globetrotting mission of vengeance is off the record, even for the BSS, and the stakes have arguably never been this high for the character, who is now older, wounded from battle and not the spry super spy he once was. There has never been a Bond film like this one, as the filmmakers have, for better or worse, gone out of their way to give longtime fans something truly different for the series’ 50th anniversary. In its scope and approach, it feels more like a Christopher Nolan Batman movie than any previous Bond film, as terrorism on the home front (a theme underlined by a speech Dench
gives directly to the camera), the nature of the villain (more like The Joker than Auric Goldfinger) and an emphasis on Bond’s Nice gun! origins make this an atypically personal spy vehicle, more Bruce Wayne than James Bond. This has truly been directed by an Oscar-winning filmmaker, as American Beauty and Road to Perdition helmer Sam Mendes gives Skyfall a stylish look, with some scenes staged like a glossy art movie. Craig’s handsome profile is often framed in the foreground of gorgeous locations and many sequences are stunningly lit and provide a film noir feel. Craig’s icy demeanor makes him at odds with the breezy one-liners he sometimes tosses out but his nearly smirk-free approach to the part is still commanding. Bardem’s performance is a problem–the character makes a great entrance but Bardem’s portrayal and possibly the role itself is too eccentric for the film. Silva is too strange to be scary and comes across more
like a crazed stalker than a worthy Bond villain. You never believe what the screenplay suggests- that Silva is Bond’s equal. Except for the appealing Naomi Harris, whose closing scene is especially satisfying, the “Bond girls” barely register and, action wise, the movie never tops the spectacle in its pre-title sequence. Mention should go to Adele’s title song, presented by a typically amazing collage of psychedelic imagery, and the wrapup scenes will make longtime 007 fans extremely happy. There are strong components throughout but this isn’t one of the best Bond films. Casino Royale is still the only Bond film of the Daniel Craig era that left me shaken and stirred. ■ To share or save this article, type: mt.hy.pr/1621f

Horoscope
Sign Language BY CAERIEL CRESTIN SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21) A lot of people I know are using November as a chance to lose weight, save money, write a novel, or otherwise cross off something that’s been on their Todo list for a while. A week in, it’s not too late to follow their example. In fact, if I were you, I’d take advantage of this window between now and the December holidays to accomplish something you’ve been wanting to do for this entire past year, but haven’t had a chance to make happen. Wouldn’t that, after all, be the best Christmas/Hanukah/etc. gift you could give yourself? SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21) Take it out; blow off the years of accumulated mental dust that have collected on it. What is it? I can barely remember—I think it’s that neglected goal you set for yourself ages ago. It was important to you then, and it’ll be important to you again now that you remember what it was; maybe even more important than anything else you have on your plate at the moment. Why dredge it out of your cerebral attic? Because, finally, doors have opened that will let you move miles closer to it. Yes, that’s right, you’re at last able to take some steps—long, loping strides, actually—towards it. The only thing that might disconcert you: they’re not necessarily the steps you originally intended—they’re better. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19) I don’t know about you, but the lesson I’m working on comprehending this week is the one where I remember to actually think before I speak. Like you, I’m a big fan of spontaneity, but it works best when I’m in a clear-headed, happy place, not when I’m down in the trenches working on my shit. You’ve admirably spent the past week thigh-deep in mental sludge, digging through your mental blocks and rooting out your most unhealthy patterns. When I’m in that state, I don’t necessarily respond to external stimuli in as enlightened a way as I might like. Might you be the same? To avoid being irrevocably branded asshole, I’m inclined to take a moment before I open my mouth. This week, follow my example.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20) Everyone hates grunt work. Who wants to spend half the day scrubbing mildew from between tiles with an old toothbrush, or redoing someone else’s botched job? No one, but some signs are better at putting up with it than others. Let’s face it: this isn’t one of your strengths. However, every once in a while you’ve still got to buckle down and clean out the fridge or steam-clean the carpets. This week, the misery won’t be as profound as usual, should you decide to cross a few tedious tasks from your list. Get them out of the way while you can bear it. The sense of relief when they’re finished will eclipse the foul memory of actually doing them soon enough. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20) Your inner eye is bloodshot and blurry. Although you’ve been lauded for your astoundingly clear and far-sighted internal vision in the past, you haven’t been impressing people with your feeble feats of imagination lately. Luckily, this week’s astrological events are the Visine you need to clear up that stoner redness and get your inspiration synched with reality again. Don’t let the past month’s despicable letdowns and setbacks keep you down. As of this week you can (and should) trust your gut, your intuition, and your oracular enthusiasm again. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22) You have an intoxicating effect on people. You’ve heard this before, but the phenomenon has usually been confined to selected locales, like the bedroom, or during your delectable home-cooked dinners. This week, however, your delicious influence may be more universal and pronounced. Don’t be surprised if people around you become suddenly prone to throwing their arms around your neck and slurring candor in your direction, or toasting you with moony affection. They can’t help themselves. Just take their (complimentary) smashed conduct with a grain of salt, and be generous with the aspirin and TLC the next day.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18) It may not be a perfect day, but the sun is shining gloriously. Your friends adore you, your love life is looking up, and, well, you just feel good. This is like the scene in the movie where everything’s going great, where the director shows you how wonderful life was before all the crazy shit goes down. Except you’re not in a movie. That’s the good news. Although the loveliness can’t last forever, obviously, it’s not about to come crashing down on you tomorrow. Squash your anxieties, please. You’ve got a clear stretch ahead. Relax and enjoy the sweetness.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22) The shackles cut into your wrists, the mildew reeks, and the rats keep nibbling your toes. Much as I love Scorpios, their birthday season is a rough time for the Leo tribe. Having the sun (your ruler) in that cool, dark, watery sign—which is about as different from your exuberant, sunny optimism as it’s possible to get—made the past few weeks feel a little like being chained in a dungeon. Swallow your gruel and make it through this last stretch, though; pretty soon your buddy Sagittarius will rule the world, let you out of the pit, and all will be well again.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20) Scruff is in. 9 out of 10 guys within my range of vision have gone days without the blade. It’s a very Piscean fashion statement, to let your stubble grow, to walk around sporting a fabulous bed-head, or go bra-less. That’s right, your casual this-is-me-take-it-or-leave-itness spreads as easily as cream cheese. It extends beyond mere laziness—with you, at least. While you’re leading the hyper-casual fashion trend, maybe you could start a minor attitude revolution while you’re at it, and encourage people to accept themselves as thoroughly as you do. Show them how feeling okay about extra pounds, new wrinkles, or slightly obnoxious quirks is much, much more attractive than trying to hide them.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22) Just because you can do the work of 2-3 people doesn’t mean you get paid, recognized, or rewarded accordingly. Wouldn’t it be great if your efficiency meant you could pull in two paychecks every week? Unfortunately, most businesses don’t run that way, and you almost get punished for your effectiveness by simply getting more responsibility and hardly any more pay. It might be true that the only way you could get paid what you actually deserve is to work for someone who notices, and cares—you. Have you ever thought of being your own boss? This is a good time to check in again and see if that might actually be a possibility. If it is, seize it.
ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19) Love often requires sacrifice, compromise. It’s not unheard of for your lover to ask you to give up something altogether. For someone as freedom-hungry as you, these demands are frequently deal breakers, especially because they most usually come from a completely irrational, hyper-emotional realm you’re not that familiar with. This week, you may discover emotional roadblocks on every route you’d normally choose to travel, but don’t panic. Although you may have to delay your arrival at the destination you picked, you don’t have to cancel your plans to get there. These barricades are temporary, just a checkpoint to ensure (for everyone’s safety) that your car is bomb-free and its passengers are properly belted in.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22) Oh, Pollyanna. Your rosy outlook of the near future flies in the face of all odds, public opinion, and educated forecasts. But why fight it? If you have reason to hope that the next few weeks will be more wonderful than chocolate, more power to you. Be a shining example of how intention shapes reality. You know what happens to cynical naysayers? Shit happens. It just ends up justifying and reinforcing their cynicism. Unfortunately, shit happens to idealistic optimists, too. But if you retain that ability to concentrate on the silver lining of any sinister thunderheads that come your way, you’re a lot less likely to go down with the next flush.
